Latest / Foul Territory / Red Sox telling end-of-season presser, Raleigh & Naylor undergo surgery, Bregman says Cubs FAILED
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: That's what she said.
- 0:08Speaker 2: That's what he said, presented by Lorraine Coe. Red Sox
- 0:12Speaker 2: had their post-mortem press conference, if you will, and it
- 0:17Speaker 2: was the longest stinking press conference in the history of
- 0:20Speaker 2: press conferences. Apparently, they had a lot to talk about.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It was Sam Kennedy. It was Craig Breslow. It was
- 0:26Speaker 2: Chad Tracy. Chad Tracy on the wild around pitching changes.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Not one time since I've been here has anybody scripted
- 0:32Speaker 2: a game. Those decisions are mine. That specific one, my decision,
- 0:36Speaker 2: that obviously didn't go great. That falls on me, talking
- 0:39Speaker 2: about obviously removing guys early as far as the starters
- 0:42Speaker 2: were concerned, Peyton Tolley, Sonny Gray. But he took the
- 0:46Speaker 2: onus of it. Do you believe him that that was not.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Scripted, EK?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Not for a second.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Not for a second. Me either. Not for a second.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I mean, look, you have to have a plan. You
- 0:59Speaker 3: have to have a plan going into it. So is
- 1:00Speaker 3: he saying we didn't even have a plan, like this
- 1:03Speaker 3: is all just on me?
- 1:04Speaker 4: Stop.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Stop.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I heard this team had a meeting in 2018 after
- 1:09Speaker 3: they won the World Series. Their pitching staff, or maybe
- 1:13Speaker 3: their bullpen, I'm not 100% sure, led baseball in ERA,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and the analytical department told the pitching group, You guys
- 1:24Speaker 3: could have had a half a run lower ERA if
- 1:28Speaker 3: you had listened to our numbers. They are 100% having
- 1:31Speaker 3: these conversations. Stop with the, it's not scripted. Did you
- 1:35Speaker 3: make the wrong decision taking them out? Or were you
- 1:39Speaker 3: afraid of your job? I don't think he was afraid
- 1:41Speaker 3: of his job. I think he took the numbers and
- 1:43Speaker 3: he said, this is our shot. We're going to go
- 1:47Speaker 3: to Eric Miller who struggled in September, but I didn't
- 1:50Speaker 3: see that. And We're throwing him against a left-handed hitter
- 1:54Speaker 3: who hits lefties really well, and he's going to throw
- 1:56Speaker 3: a lot of sliders. Or not hits lefties really well,
- 2:00Speaker 3: hits sliders very well. And Cody Bellinger, it didn't work out.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I would have kept Sonny Graham.
- 2:07Speaker 5: It didn't work out against Ben Rice either because it
- 2:09Speaker 5: happened two days in a row.
- 2:13Speaker 3: So why can't– why are we earlier– who was on?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Brendan Cuddy was on. He's talking about, wow, that would
- 2:20Speaker 3: look like a panic move. What the heck? Aaron Boone
- 2:24Speaker 3: was just out on the podium saying, we got to
- 2:27Speaker 3: play for our lives. We got to play for our season.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It's over. Sorry, it's panic. It doesn't mean you're changing
- 2:33Speaker 3: your entire script. It just means I'm looking at what
- 2:36Speaker 3: Sonny Gray's doing, and I'm like, probably not taking him
- 2:40Speaker 3: out yet.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Why?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Because he's really good the second time through. Is Eric Miller,
- 2:45Speaker 3: for the majority of the season, was he really, really good?
- 2:49Speaker 3: Absolutely he was. And you want to neutralize those lefties.
- 2:52Speaker 3: But if it doesn't work one night, it's okay to
- 2:54Speaker 3: look at it and go, I'm not going to go
- 2:56Speaker 3: back to it. Look what Walt Weiss did. And I
- 2:58Speaker 3: know we're talking about this because one team it didn't
- 3:00Speaker 3: work out and the other team it did. Didier Fuentes never,
- 3:04Speaker 3: ever comes back out for the ninth inning in a
- 3:08Speaker 3: team that has more of their game scripted. He was
- 3:12Speaker 3: watching what the hitters were saying and the hitters were saying,
- 3:16Speaker 3: please take him out of the game. So he kept
- 3:18Speaker 3: him in the game.
- 3:21Speaker 6: This is the call of the Australian rubber bird. This
- 3:27Speaker 6: is the call of the Alaskan chili bird. And this
- 3:34Speaker 6: is the call of the marathon mascot bald eagle, Max.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Hi, it's Max.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Hello.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Did you know you could save up to a dollar
- 3:41Speaker 6: a gallon with the Marathon Rewards app?
- 3:43Speaker 4: No.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Thanks for the call. Marathon, where fun runs on full.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Available at participating marathon locations. Terms and conditions apply. See
- 3:49Speaker 6: MarathonRewards.com for details.
- 3:52Speaker 2: The thing is, though, it's the veterans that are upset
- 3:54Speaker 2: with the decisions. Apparently, Craig Breslow had a discussion with
- 3:58Speaker 2: Wilson Contreras for two hours after he had the computer comment,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know, that, yeah, there's too much analytics, yada, yada, yada.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Sonny Gray said, you know what, I would have liked
- 4:06Speaker 2: to have been trusted in that moment, even though it
- 4:09Speaker 2: was about to be the third time through the order.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You can understand why the veteran players, both of those guys,
- 4:15Speaker 2: which may not be back next year if they elect
- 4:17Speaker 2: not to come back, you know, Sonny Gray may retire
- 4:20Speaker 2: and Wilson Contreras may go someplace else. too much analytics,
- 4:25Speaker 2: not enough analytics. There's always, there's always enough.
- 4:28Speaker 1: There's no right answer to that question. You can't answer
- 4:30Speaker 1: that question. There's nobody knows Alana.
- 4:32Speaker 5: And by the way, for Chad Tracy to say it
- 4:34Speaker 5: wasn't scripted, I agree with what he said, because it was,
- 4:36Speaker 5: they talked about this. He took the hit, the pitchers
- 4:38Speaker 5: out at the exact same hitter, both times and brought
- 4:41Speaker 5: in the exact same guy at the exact same hitter. So,
- 4:44Speaker 5: I mean, number of hitters, sorry, not the same hitter.
- 4:46Speaker 5: I know, but the exact number hitter, right? So you
- 4:49Speaker 5: can't tell me they didn't discuss this. He just decided, man,
- 4:52Speaker 5: 20th hitter game one just happens to be the 20th
- 4:55Speaker 5: hitter in game two. We're bringing in somebody else. It's
- 4:59Speaker 5: not that.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Do they say you have to do A, B, C? No,
- 5:05Speaker 5: but they say, hey, we'd really like it if you
- 5:07Speaker 5: did A, B, and C. And he looks at his card.
- 5:11Speaker 5: They all have a little card like this. This isn't
- 5:13Speaker 5: one of them, but they have a little white card.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Like this, and they go. Mm-hmm. Okay. Okay. It says
- 5:19Speaker 1: to do this. And then you talk to your pitching coach,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Andrew Bailey and Andrew Bailey says, yeah, yeah. Well, let's
- 5:24Speaker 1: look at the card.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:25Speaker 1: That's what it says. Okay. Well, and what did Joe
- 5:27Speaker 1: Maddon say yesterday? They'd rather fail.
- 5:29Speaker 5: With the analytics because they can fall back on the
- 5:32Speaker 5: analytics and said, the analytics said to do this.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It's not my fault. The analytics said to do it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It was the right move.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Boston's pitching was not really the issue all season long.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You guys, it was lack of offense. It was obviously, uh,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Injuries to key players. Roman Anthony, for whatever reason, can't
- 5:47Speaker 2: stay healthy to save his life. What do they do
- 5:49Speaker 2: moving forward in terms of this offseason? But I feel
- 5:53Speaker 2: sometimes with this particular ownership group and where they are
- 5:56Speaker 2: right now, it's like, let's just do enough. Let's do
- 5:59Speaker 2: enough to make the fans a little bit happy. Get
- 6:02Speaker 2: into the postseason. Not necessarily compete. But it doesn't seem
- 6:05Speaker 2: like this group absolutely loathes losing to the Yankees like
- 6:11Speaker 2: groups in the past did before.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I think that rivalry's changed. I don't know. Maybe it's
- 6:22Speaker 3: because certain networks don't really pump it up the same
- 6:28Speaker 3: or they try and it's kind of fake. I don't know.
- 6:32Speaker 3: The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is going to always be big
- 6:36Speaker 3: for the fan base. For the players, I don't know
- 6:42Speaker 3: that I don't know that the players hate Cam Schlittler.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Do they want to face him? No. I mean, he's
- 6:48Speaker 3: going to be the Cy Young in the American League.
- 6:51Speaker 3: But I think the Red Sox fans hate Cam Schlittler
- 6:54Speaker 3: more than anything. I think Yankee fans hate Wilson Contreras
- 6:58Speaker 3: more than players on the Yankees hate Wilson Contreras. So
- 7:03Speaker 3: I think that's different if you're talking about that. I
- 7:06Speaker 3: think the reality is even the Yankees, this could be
- 7:10Speaker 3: said that like, Is their most important thing day one
- 7:16Speaker 3: to game one to game 162 is the most important
- 7:20Speaker 3: thing winning a World Series. And if it's not in
- 7:23Speaker 3: those meetings, then I think they're in the wrong business.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I think the Red Sox are happy about making the playoffs.
- 7:33Speaker 3: And I think the ownership is happy that they made
- 7:35Speaker 3: a boat ton of money that And they didn't have
- 7:40Speaker 3: to force it with the salaries to go even higher.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So this might be a good season with a bad
- 7:48Speaker 3: outcome for the future because it shows they don't need
- 7:51Speaker 3: Rafi Devers. It shows they can trade for guys with
- 7:54Speaker 3: expiring contracts that other teams are going to pay for.
- 7:57Speaker 3: It shows that they can play with a young lineup.
- 8:01Speaker 3: It didn't go well, but you know what? We got
- 8:04Speaker 3: a lot of butts.
- 8:04Speaker 1: In the seats.
- 8:08Speaker 4: The 2026 MLB playoffs are here. And guess what? Seat
- 8:13Speaker 4: Geek has you covered. Let's go. If you're looking to
- 8:16Speaker 4: go to a playoff game, which I know everybody is,
- 8:19Speaker 4: your favorite team, if they're around, go find Seat Geek.
- 8:22Speaker 4: They're going to find your best seat that you can get.
- 8:25Speaker 4: If that green light is on, that means it's the
- 8:27Speaker 4: seat to go. If it's red, that means no. Guess what?
- 8:29Speaker 4: There's some big teams going. Kratzy, tell us about it.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I'm definitely going to a Brewers game. There's no bad
- 8:35Speaker 3: seats in Milwaukee. because the stadium is right on top
- 8:39Speaker 3: of the field. It feels like you're in the grass.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And you know what? If your team lost this year,
- 8:44Speaker 3: go get yourself some concert tickets.
- 8:47Speaker 4: They have it all. And, of course, we have a
- 8:49Speaker 4: code for you. You can use code TERRITORY10 for 10%
- 8:53Speaker 4: off your next set of tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10%
- 8:56Speaker 4: off any tickets with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you
- 9:00Speaker 4: click the link in the description to download the app
- 9:02Speaker 4: and have the code automatically added to your account so
- 9:05Speaker 4: you can use it later. Go to Sink Geek.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Just give fans enough hope, but not really have any
- 9:12Speaker 2: intention of going for it. Another stupid move by the
- 9:15Speaker 2: Boston Red Sox is severing ties with Jason Baratek. I
- 9:20Speaker 2: don't understand this at all. When Alex Cora was dismissed
- 9:24Speaker 2: of his duties and other members of the coaching staff, Tech,
- 9:28Speaker 2: apparently they're still trying, AJ, to get him back in
- 9:32Speaker 2: the fold. But it's been a very.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Contentious parting, if you will, of Jason Veritech and that club.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I don't know how you let this guy go, but
- 9:44Speaker 2: I can tell you this, it's never going to be
- 9:46Speaker 2: the same.
- 9:48Speaker 5: No, I don't know how that happens either. Listen, this
- 9:50Speaker 5: guy was a stud for your organization for a long time.
- 9:52Speaker 5: He helped break the curse.
- 9:54Speaker 1: He was the leader. He was the captain of this team.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Listen, the reason I think he went with Alex is
- 10:01Speaker 5: because he was when you fire the manager, you kind
- 10:03Speaker 5: of need to get rid of his closest confidants. And
- 10:06Speaker 5: Veritech was one of those guys with AC.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Can you get him back?
- 10:10Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I mean, does Jason want to do that? Does he
- 10:12Speaker 1: want to try?
- 10:12Speaker 5: I don't know what Jason wants to do, but I
- 10:15Speaker 5: love tech. He's an Orlando guy, catcher, great flat top
- 10:18Speaker 5: back in the day. Um, so I don't know how
- 10:22Speaker 5: this happens, if it can happen, but I mean, listen,
- 10:26Speaker 5: if you're the Red Sox, you just can't let an
- 10:27Speaker 5: asset like that get away. It's not the same as
- 10:31Speaker 5: like losing David Ortiz or someone like that, but it's
- 10:34Speaker 5: pretty darn close. Cause this guy has done a ton
- 10:37Speaker 5: for this organization, done a ton for the city of
- 10:39Speaker 5: Boston and just is a good, genuinely good dude.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Would you see the Cardinals if Yadier Molina stuck around
- 10:47Speaker 3: and never left? Would you see the Cardinals ever? letting
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yadier Molina go?
- 10:52Speaker 1: No, no, no. I mean, unless, okay.
- 10:56Speaker 5: The only way I could see it is like, if
- 10:57Speaker 5: he was the manager and it didn't work out, something
- 11:00Speaker 5: like that, but they would still want him to stay
- 11:02Speaker 5: in the organization. The fact that they got rid of
- 11:04Speaker 5: Veritech when they did is what was most surprising to
- 11:07Speaker 5: me was, was he was like one of the casualties
- 11:09Speaker 5: with AC. And I, again, I don't know all that
- 11:12Speaker 5: happened there, but it was just, it was just a
- 11:14Speaker 5: weird thing, but I know him and AC were very tight.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I know I do meetings and I'd go in there
- 11:19Speaker 5: and it'd be, A.C. Veritech and Ramon Vasquez sitting in
- 11:23Speaker 5: there talking along.
- 11:24Speaker 1: A lot of times Pedro was in there. And I
- 11:27Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, I don't know, but I hope.
- 11:29Speaker 5: It works out because Veritech needs to be a part
- 11:31Speaker 5: of the Red Sox.
- 11:32Speaker 2: No question about it. It's like the Yankees saying that
- 11:34Speaker 2: we don't need Derek Jeter. It's about the same thing.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Baseball fans, it's time to lock in.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Lorraine Co.

- 11:54Speaker 2: This might be an explanation, guys, about why Josh Naylor
- 11:57Speaker 2: and Cal Raleigh of the Mariners had down years offensively. Apparently,
- 12:01Speaker 2: they both underwent successful procedures on a couple of different
- 12:05Speaker 2: places and are expected to be ready for 2027 spring training.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Raleigh had an acromioclavicular clear. You say that correctly. Debridement procedure.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I'm sure I butchered that on his left shoulder. That
- 12:17Speaker 2: was on Saturday. And then Naylor had fibrocartilage complex repair
- 12:21Speaker 2: surgery on his right wrist the same day. Does that
- 12:25Speaker 2: kind of make you feel like, Oh, they were probably
- 12:27Speaker 2: dealing with this for quite some time. And perhaps that
- 12:30Speaker 2: explains AJ, the, uh, the offensive, um, struggles, if you will.
- 12:36Speaker 4: No, no.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I mean, they played with it. Guys play with stuff
- 12:40Speaker 1: all the time.
- 12:40Speaker 5: I mean, there's guys I know, for a fact, I'm
- 12:43Speaker 5: not going to say who that are playing right now
- 12:44Speaker 5: with injuries that are playing in the playoffs. So that
- 12:48Speaker 5: they're going to have to have surgery after the season
- 12:50Speaker 5: is over.
- 12:51Speaker 1: So, I mean, could it, could it lead to bad things?
- 12:54Speaker 4: Sure.
- 12:54Speaker 5: But this is more of a, Hey, we want, if they,
- 12:57Speaker 5: when people find out in spring training, they had surgery,
- 12:59Speaker 5: we don't want to be behind it, but what was it?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Left shoulder for Cal and wrist for Naylor. Does it
- 13:05Speaker 1: affect you? Absolutely.
- 13:06Speaker 5: But guys play with stuff all the time. So no,
- 13:08Speaker 5: it's not an excuse. And I don't think they'd use
- 13:09Speaker 5: it as an excuse. It's just something they wanted to
- 13:11Speaker 5: get out there and, It's understandable.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Standard PSA. You're never 100%.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a difference between being hurt and injured.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Everybody's got something right now.
- 13:23Speaker 4: We'll be back.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Football season is finally back, and Fabletics just teamed up
- 13:32Speaker 3: with NFL's number one wide receiver, Jamar Chase, on a

- 13:39Speaker 3: baggy cargoes, and performance gear that fits right into everything
- 13:43Speaker 3: this season brings. From workouts and travel to game day
- 13:46Speaker 3: and everyday life, it's definitely worth checking it out. It's fall.
- 13:50Speaker 3: We're watching playoff baseball, but I'm doing it in comfort.
- 13:53Speaker 3: You know why? Because I'm wearing this exact sweatshirt. When
- 13:57Speaker 3: it's a little warm outside, but it's crisp and breezy.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Nobody take my sweatshirt. That includes everybody in my house.

- 14:30Speaker 2: Talking about the Cubs and Alex Bregman really quick. Patrick
- 14:33Speaker 2: Mooney had this on X, why Alex Bregman sees the
- 14:37Speaker 2: Cubs season as a failure, guys. I would imagine he's
- 14:41Speaker 2: a competitive guy. They didn't make the postseason in terms of,
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, going very deep into it, lost in a
- 14:46Speaker 2: wild card round. What say you, E.K.? 100% agree.
- 14:52Speaker 3: You talk about mindsets. We just talked about the White Sox,
- 14:55Speaker 3: who are about to make it to the American League
- 14:56Speaker 3: Championship Series. And it was brought up by people that
- 14:59Speaker 3: know the White Sox. Chris Getz didn't think this was
- 15:02Speaker 3: going to be a good season or as good a
- 15:04Speaker 3: season as it was going to be. Jerry Reinsdorf didn't
- 15:08Speaker 3: think this is where they were going to be. They
- 15:09Speaker 3: had no idea. Bregman comes into an organization and he
- 15:13Speaker 3: signs there because he says, we are going to win
- 15:17Speaker 3: a World Series. He's not signing someplace where he's like, well,
- 15:20Speaker 3: you know what, we'll see what we do. It's a mindset.
- 15:23Speaker 3: So when you want to win a World Series and
- 15:25Speaker 3: you fall short of that, like very short of it,
- 15:28Speaker 3: not even making it to the NLDS, then, yeah, it's
- 15:33Speaker 3: a failure. And I think that's going to be his
- 15:34Speaker 3: expectation throughout every year of his contract, which should make
- 15:38Speaker 3: the north side happy.
- 15:41Speaker 1: It's almost as if somebody said it's a failure when
- 15:43Speaker 1: you don't win the World Series as a player.
- 15:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Stupid enough to say that or expect that. I don't know,
- 15:52Speaker 5: but good for Alex Bregman because he's right. If you
- 15:55Speaker 5: go into a season or you're having a great season
- 15:57Speaker 5: and you get to the post season, your expectations, whatever
- 16:00Speaker 5: they were at the start of the year, as the
- 16:02Speaker 5: year goes, they should change. And when you get to
- 16:04Speaker 5: the post season, your expectation is to win the world series.
- 16:07Speaker 5: So was it a, was it complete and utter failure? No,
- 16:10Speaker 5: they made the post season.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Cool. They got spanked by the Padres. They're home already.
- 16:14Speaker 5: So was it, if, was it a, successful season and
- 16:16Speaker 5: Alex Bregman and I, who's won a few world series,
- 16:19Speaker 5: absolutely not.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And nor should it ever change.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Stay that way Bregman and teach the other people in
- 16:24Speaker 5: the league how to do it because that's what you've
- 16:25Speaker 5: done everywhere you've been as you've won games and you've
- 16:28Speaker 5: taken your team deep and into the post season in
- 16:30Speaker 5: one world series.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So don't ever change.
- 16:33Speaker 3: You don't do great things with a half, half-hearted mindset.
- 16:37Speaker 3: I'm not saying that I'll ever be as good as

- 16:45Speaker 4: You know what?
- 16:46Speaker 3: It's not going to happen. The game is too hard.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Winning a World Series is too hard. You have to
- 16:51Speaker 3: all be bought in 100%. And bringing a guy like
- 16:54Speaker 3: Bregman into an organization changes that. Red Sox.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Exactly.

- 17:02Speaker 2: and we didn't play well enough to do that. So
- 17:04Speaker 2: now it's time to look in the mirror and get better.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I know myself and a lot of these guys will
- 17:09Speaker 2: be thinking about it every day of the offseason and
- 17:12Speaker 2: let it fuel us.
