Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So it's been a big week of health announcements. We've
- 0:02Speaker 1: got the doctors one, now we've got another one. The
- 0:04Speaker 1: government's increasing the number of training places for nurse practitioners
- 0:08Speaker 1: specializing in primary care to one hundred and twenty a year.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Is also supporting advanced education for up to one hundred
- 0:14Speaker 1: and twenty registered nurses. Professor Warwick bag is the Dean
- 0:17Speaker 1: of Medical and Health Sciences at Orkhan University. He's got
- 0:20Speaker 1: up early for us. Good morning to your Warwick.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Good morning, Andrew. Wonderful news, isn't it? Is it enough?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Will it make a difference?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Of course it will make a difference, Andrew. The Minister
- 0:30Speaker 2: has touched on all of the important points to improve
- 0:34Speaker 2: the numbers of healthcare workers in New Zealand. He's announced
- 0:39Speaker 2: nurse practitioner training, particularly in primary care. He's upstealing nurses
- 0:43Speaker 2: in rural education. He has supported new locally trained doctors,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and he's also making use of doctors that are already
- 0:52Speaker 2: here or arriving in New Zealand and helping them to
- 0:55Speaker 2: train to become general practitioners. So there's a range of
- 0:58Speaker 2: solutions and the Minister injected money behind each of those solutions,
- 1:02Speaker 2: which is really going to make a difference, some of
- 1:04Speaker 2: those in the very near term, some of those in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the longer term.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Obviously you appreciate and respect the Health Minister, which is
- 1:11Speaker 1: of course, Simian Brown, is the war between the Health
- 1:15Speaker 1: Ministry and all the practitioners can to an end.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well. I think as a university we delighted to be
- 1:22Speaker 2: able to work with the Minister to help with their
- 1:25Speaker 2: education of folks who want to be health professionals to
- 1:28Speaker 2: meet New Zealand's needs. So we're definitely very delighted with
- 1:34Speaker 2: their announcement and helping the sector get back on its feet.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And because you're at the university, because you're training these people,
- 1:42Speaker 1: are people coming to you for training? Do we have
- 1:45Speaker 1: the raw materials that can be formed into a health sector?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Absolutely, Andrew. We've been absolutely delighted by the strength of
- 1:53Speaker 2: all of our applications this year. We are well experienced,
- 1:58Speaker 2: we've got a great track record, and we're really excited
- 2:01Speaker 2: about the way we can do this education and the
- 2:03Speaker 2: cost effective way we can do this education. So this
- 2:07Speaker 2: is really a very good news story and delighted by
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Minister's series of announcements.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And finally, those people you're going to train are their
- 2:14Speaker 1: jobs for them at the other end.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So one of the challenges with new nursing graduates, that's
- 2:21Speaker 2: been a particular challenge and something we need to keep
- 2:24Speaker 2: working through and I know that TU New Zealand is
- 2:26Speaker 2: committed to doing that. We seem to have no trouble
- 2:30Speaker 2: in finding places for doctors to work, so that's really
- 2:33Speaker 2: good news and with a focus on general practice, will
- 2:36Speaker 2: really be strengthening that part of the equation. So I
- 2:41Speaker 2: think it's a strong yes to you or answer with
- 2:43Speaker 2: some attention, particularly to those areas around new graduate nurses.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Well Wareck, thank you so much for your insight today,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Professor Warwick bag from the University of Auckland.
