- 0:36Welcome to the drive through episode number 36.
- 0:39This is our monthly recap, where we put together a menu of automotive
- 0:42motorsport car, adjacent news and wherever Eric has been this last month.
- 0:48So let's pull up to the window.
- 0:49Number one.
- 0:50For some automotive news.
- 0:52Eric, where were you this month?
- 0:56Our week drained me.
- 0:58What day is it, by the way?
- 1:00Like, I am in a time warp.
- 1:02Let's do the time warp again.
- 1:06Too early.
- 1:07Although Halloween is out already.
- 1:09Can you believe that?
- 1:10Halloween was out after Easter.
- 1:12Summer isn't even over yet, and people are already stocking
- 1:15the shelves for Halloween.
- 1:16Soon, Christmas decorations will be out Valentine's Day.
- 1:21That's if they ever take them down.
- 1:22That's the secret, just have a Christmas section.
- 1:25You never have to take it down, just leave it up.
- 1:28You could take away 10% Of the women's clothing section and still have plenty
- 1:33of room for a Christmas section.
- 1:34I think Kim Kardashian has something to say about that.
- 1:37Maybe, maybe, maybe.
- 1:38But you know what?
- 1:39It is 24 7 Christmas at Bronner's Christmas Wonderland
- 1:43in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
- 1:44So if you're on your way to the middle of nowhere, stop by.
- 1:48So there you go.
- 1:49But that's not why we're here.
- 1:50We're not here to talk Christmas.
- 1:51That's for later in the year.
- 1:52But wait, speaking of the Kardashians, how is California?
- 1:55I might've bumped into them.
- 1:56Wait, you couldn't miss them.
- 2:00You know, last time we got together, I recapped my epic
- 2:03journey to the European union.
- 2:04This time I went to the completely opposite side of the country.
- 2:08Thanks to Don at garage style magazine.
- 2:10And we did 10 days.
- 2:12of the Monterey Peninsula for Car Week.
- 2:15Last time I checked, a week is only seven days.
- 2:18You know, I wrote an article about that too.
- 2:21That's them California weeks.
- 2:23Because you get stoned the first three.
- 2:25California's famous Car Week is becoming really two weeks.
- 2:28Soon it's going to be Car Month.
- 2:29It's absolutely...
- 2:31Insane.
- 2:31And I will say I've had people invite me out time and time again
- 2:35to go and I'm like, man, I don't know if I can put aside 10 days.
- 2:38I don't know if I can put aside a week.
- 2:39I don't know if I can go, you know, works in the way, you know, real stuff.
- 2:42But this time I couldn't pass off the opportunity, especially to go with a
- 2:46press team, with photographers, with everybody that was there contributing.
- 2:49It was an awesome experience and once in a lifetime to do it
- 2:52that way, to really do it up.
- 2:54I'll just summarize it for you 10 days, 37 events, over 5, 000 photographs,
- 3:01unbelievable people, places, and cars.
- 3:04We're going to do some show and tell this time.
- 3:06So if you're watching this on Patreon, you actually get to see what I'm showing
- 3:08off here because every event I went to.
- 3:11I got something and I kid you not.
- 3:13I paid an extra hundred bucks to send my luggage home because in a mid
- 3:19sized suitcase, I was at 60 pounds.
- 3:21That's my normal packing.
- 3:23Just your shoes, right?
- 3:24Just my shoes, my socks, my underwear.
- 3:27So the Monterey area is cut up into these little towns and it starts with
- 3:31like Seaside and you work your way down to Fisherman's Wharf and then there's
- 3:35Carmel Valley Then there's the city of Carmel then there's Pacific Grove
- 3:39and all these other places that are connected even Salinas where Laguna
- 3:42Seca is It's all right there and in this Conglomeration of different towns.
- 3:46At first I was kind of getting spun around.
- 3:48I'm like, where are we?
- 3:48Where are we going?
- 3:49It was a lot of driving and we were actually staying in of all places.
- 3:52Garlic town, USA, which is Gilroy, California, because we couldn't
- 3:56get a place in downtown Monterey.
- 3:58We were commuting in about 40 minutes or so with our Lexus LX
- 4:02600 press vehicle, which I'll talk about here in a little bit.
- 4:05But I wanted to highlight some of the events we went to.
- 4:07And the first little town that's quite charming is Pacific Grove.
- 4:11It's full of like different things to do.
- 4:13There's a motorcycle museum there.
- 4:14There's some great places to eat.
- 4:16It seems to be a repeat offender when it comes to car shows.
- 4:20There's the little car show.
- 4:21There's a couple others.
- 4:22And then there's the classic motorsports car show.
- 4:25They're the authors of not only classic motorsports magazine, but one
- 4:28we're all too familiar with, which is grassroots motorsports magazine.
- 4:32Why I mentioned that.
- 4:34It's debated whether or not the beginning of car week is actually a
- 4:38week from pebble, or if it's longer is that the quote unquote kickoff event
- 4:42for many, many years was the classic motorsports concourse in Pacific Grove.
- 4:46Now we back that up almost a week prior.
- 4:50Car Week really kicks off with the Pasadera concourses, which we had Rick
- 4:53Barnett on the show last year to talk about, and I bumped into him several
- 4:57times while I was there in Monterey.
- 4:58What I liked about Classic Motorsports, it was one of those
- 5:02anything goes kind of shows.
- 5:04All sorts of stuff showed up.
- 5:05You're talking...
- 5:06911s to Camaro swapped MGs to alpha Montreal's to Jaguar
- 5:12XJR homologated race cars.
- 5:15It was actually a really great show.
- 5:16I really enjoyed it.
- 5:17Mad props to the classic motor sports guys and free magazine.
- 5:21So I'm going to flip through it.
- 5:22I'm going to take a look at this thing.
- 5:23Lots of really cool stuff in here.
- 5:24Also in Pacific Grove, I mentioned the little car show.
- 5:27That was a lot of fun.
- 5:28We returned for that.
- 5:29It's historically been.
- 5:31Cars with 1, 601 cc's or less.
- 5:35So we're talking 1.
- 5:365 liters, 1.
- 5:366 liters rounded up this year.
- 5:38They opened it up to 1.
- 5:398 liters.
- 5:40So 1, 801 cc's, which kind of opened up the field a little bit, allowed some
- 5:44Miatas in and Nissan Pulsars, like all sorts of crazy stuff in the eighties
- 5:48because as engines got bigger, so did the little car show need to grow.
- 5:52So that was a lot of fun.
- 5:53Saw a lot of micro cars, Japanese imports, you know, stuff like that.
- 5:56So I thought that was pretty cool.
- 5:57How many Mark 4 1.
- 5:588 T's did you see, or does the power adder take it over?
- 6:01It doesn't cause they're just classified by displacement and technically we're
- 6:051787, but I saw absolutely zero Mark 4s.
- 6:08Cause they were all at Radwood.
- 6:10No, but you know who did represent us from the dubber side was a G60
- 6:13Parato that was in excellent shape.
- 6:16So one of the other events that I think I have to say when I look back was maybe
- 6:20one of my favorites and that's Radius.
- 6:23By Broad Arrow.
- 6:24And so Broad Arrow got bought by Hagerty.
- 6:27So it's part of that whole, you know, they bought motor sports
- 6:29reg, they bought Radwood, they're putting all this stuff together.
- 6:32So they've relabeled the Broad Arrow auction to Radius.
- 6:36And they're going to be doing this at Amelia as well in a couple other places.
- 6:40And what I liked was it was set at the Monterey jet center, which
- 6:44is the airport there in Monterey.
- 6:46And they made it look and feel like a late fifties, early
- 6:49sixties, Hollywood movie set.
- 6:51It just had this.
- 6:52appeal to it.
- 6:53It had this feel of luxury.
- 6:55It also doubled for the location for the motor Lux, which was later
- 7:00in the evening, which is more of like a black tie type of gala event.
- 7:03But the caliber of cars they had, I thought was pretty awesome ranging from,
- 7:08you know, the big doozies and the Packards and stuff like that, all the way to crazy
- 7:12concept cars like Weigert's vector or an Isdera 108, which I'm wearing the t shirt
- 7:17and a little show and tell here as well.
- 7:19And really everything in between the big three cars up on stage, Ferrari F50,
- 7:24Ferrari 288 GTO, and a Dyson Porsche.
- 7:27Those were like the headlining cars.
- 7:29Did you just say F 50?
- 7:31I did say five, zero five, zero.
- 7:33Okay.
- 7:33The most undesirable of the F cars is what you're trying to say
- 7:37was a highlights of the events.
- 7:40I know you love that car.
- 7:41I do.
- 7:42It was the only one at 50, apparently up for auction and
- 7:45all of car week where there was half a dozen at forties for sale.
- 7:48People don't get rid of them.
- 7:49They keep them.
- 7:51They didn't make that many to begin with either.
- 7:53Right.
- 7:54Whatever.
- 7:54It was cool seeing one again in person.
- 7:56I mean, I haven't seen one in years and they are pretty rare.
- 7:59So I've got all sorts of pictures of that.
- 8:01It's actually that headline photo of the radius article that we wrote.
- 8:04And that's part of what made this week stressful too.
- 8:06We were averaging four to five events.
- 8:09day over 10 days, and then we were writing every night, processing pictures.
- 8:13So we tried to highlight events that were really unique and really different.
- 8:17Radius was one of them.
- 8:17It just had this champagne and roses type of feel to it that other
- 8:21events didn't have, but all the events are different and that's.
- 8:25Part of the awesomeness of Car Week.
- 8:27I did pick up a copy of Hagerty's Driver's Club magazine, which I've
- 8:32been wanting to get from anybody that had Hagerty shirts, but I figured,
- 8:35Hey, it's available for free.
- 8:37So I'm going to check it out.
- 8:37And this particular issue covers Porsche's 75th birthday.
- 8:41So I'm looking forward to flipping through that and reading the articles.
- 8:44As many of our listeners probably know, we had John Kramer on from Mecham.
- 8:49We did a special pre release through Patreon, a couple other things.
- 8:52If you wanted to go behind the scenes of the auction, get some pro tips from
- 8:55John, we got his road to success story.
- 8:58But what we ended up doing was when we went to Mecham to see their Monterey,
- 9:03what they call the daytime auction, we actually ran into John again.
- 9:06He said, Hey, let me take you behind the scenes of the auction
- 9:08and show you how it runs.
- 9:10Unbelievably busy, super chaotic.
- 9:14And we have all that footage.
- 9:15It's up on our YouTube.
- 9:17It was really nice of him to do that.
- 9:18We got access to all sorts of stuff that you don't normally see.
- 9:21Met a bunch of people like in the production studio, other commentators, you
- 9:25know, just watch the auction unfold live.
- 9:28And it is more of that traditional, you know, standard American auction
- 9:31where you got the guy up there, but I mean, it's just this constant.
- 9:35Never ending cycle of cars coming in and off the block.
- 9:40And if a car spends more than two minutes on the block, it's too much.
- 9:43And so it's this just parade and this commotion, and it's very different.
- 9:46It's very lively.
- 9:47It's energetic.
- 9:48And when you go out on the field, then you can see the
- 9:50cars that are still up for sale.
- 9:52The ones that have sold what they've sold for it's very interactive.
- 9:56So that was a lot of fun.
- 9:57And again, really appreciate John taking us on that tour and showing
- 10:00us how the auction runs and how it operates behind the scenes.
- 10:03I did actually watch some of the Mecham auctions because they
- 10:07had coverage on Motor Trend app.
- 10:10So I was able to catch some of that.
- 10:11And you're right.
- 10:11Like, I didn't see any car go across the block and spend more than like
- 10:16a minute and a half, two minutes.
- 10:17They were boom, boom, boom.
- 10:19Get off the block.
- 10:19Even if they weren't sold, you know, they put the little graphic up.
- 10:22The bid goes on.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:24Uh, yeah, I, I like watching those auctions.
- 10:25I like watching them with older people like my father in law and my dad.
- 10:29Because they love to reminisce about the vehicles and then complain
- 10:32about how much they sell for.
- 10:33You know, I'm glad you brought up the bid goes on.
- 10:35John took us over there in the behind the scenes.
- 10:37That's actually a separate section of the auction where you can continue to
- 10:40bid on the cars once they're off the block and actually negotiate a price
- 10:44rather than the whole, you know, 50, 51, 52, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 10:47You can settle down and say, okay, I'm offering this.
- 10:50Are you willing to take it?
- 10:51Negotiate with the owners if they're there, stuff like that.
- 10:54So it's really interesting how they run that.
- 10:56But to your point, Brad, a minute and a half, two minutes, every car
- 10:58on the block, they got 600 cars to go through in like three days.
- 11:02So they got to keep that thing moving.
- 11:04Well, I got to give a shout out to Steve Cuttrell at Veloce media.
- 11:08We ran into him so many times, whether it was at his place, at the premier of the
- 11:13new beer rally time at Concorso Italiano, which I'll talk about here in a minute.
- 11:18To some private parties that were at his place.
- 11:20I felt like we were bumping into Steve every two minutes and especially
- 11:23thankful that he opened up his place for us to take a photo shoot for our
- 11:28Lexus press car came out really cool.
- 11:30He's got this awesome octopus mural in the background.
- 11:33There's actually a jellyfish one buried in the back behind where
- 11:36the kitchen is and stuff like that.
- 11:37There, you're going to see those photos in a garage style article
- 11:39coming out where we feature.
- 11:41Veloce media and they're building.
- 11:42It's really cool because it's unassuming from the street.
- 11:44You drive by it, not even paying attention to it.
- 11:46And inside it's a wooden roof and all this glass and that mural.
- 11:50And it was the really great backdrop to take photos of the Lexus and they
- 11:53came out really, really awesome.
- 11:54So I got to give a nod to Steve at Veloce, but also because this
- 11:59happens almost all the time.
- 12:00You're like so tired, you're done with the day, done all these events.
- 12:02And then the phone rings.
- 12:04And Don's like, Hey, we just got invited to two private
- 12:07parties or three private parties.
- 12:08Which one do you want to go to?
- 12:09And you're like, none.
- 12:12You know, I just want, I want to go home and process pictures, but
- 12:15we would do that in the evenings go where people invited us.
- 12:18And so we ended up back at Steve's one evening for the Vance party.
- 12:21And so a Vance is a.
- 12:23Lifestyle brand and magazine.
- 12:25Every issue is about 140 pages, beautiful photographs, really,
- 12:29really nice stuff in this magazine.
- 12:31The one I have here is the Monterey edition.
- 12:33So I got to actually meet Avance.
- 12:35I got to meet those guys.
- 12:36And while we were there chatting and looking at Ferrari two fifties and
- 12:41wide body nine 11s and all this kind of stuff that was in the showroom in walks.
- 12:45Matt Farah from the Smoking Tire and Jason Kamisa from Haggerty.
- 12:49We stood there for a while and I kept thinking, Brad wants
- 12:51me to talk to these guys.
- 12:53Like, I gotta talk to these guys.
- 12:54And I'm there with Mike Piptone from ESE Carbon, who we'll talk
- 12:57about here in a minute as well.
- 12:59And he's like, let's go talk to Jason.
- 13:00Let's do it.
- 13:00So we're standing there like two fools.
- 13:02And Matt Farah and Jason are having this conversation.
- 13:05I snapped a photo.
- 13:06I don't know what they were talking about, but the expressions on their
- 13:10face was really, really funny.
- 13:11But Brad, that's as close as I got because we unfortunately
- 13:14got pulled to another party.
- 13:15I know that Mike went and talked to Jason.
- 13:17So if you guys are listening, love to have you on the show, would love to get
- 13:22your road to success stories on break fix.
- 13:25So look forward to an email that's going to go to spam in the near future.
- 13:29I had to go to my more familiar stomping grounds.
- 13:33The racetrack the Monterey Historics at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway.
- 13:38They sort of run autonomous from concurrently with Car Week, but
- 13:42traditionally there was a race around Pebble Beach back in the 50s
- 13:47as a Grand Prix and then eventually moved to Laguna Seca in 1957.
- 13:50It was always the lead up to the Pebble Beach Concourse.
- 13:53The idea was you go race your car.
- 13:55And then you go show your car.
- 13:56Now, what they do is what they call the tour de elegance, which
- 13:59we have a video of that as well.
- 14:01It kind of simulates the old days racing around Monterey on 17 mile drive and
- 14:07around pebble beach and things like that.
- 14:08And then they end back at the Concord and get the car stage.
- 14:11Meanwhile, the historics are going on at Laguna Seca 300 cars.
- 14:15There were 13 classes of cars running every day, either between
- 14:18practice qualifying, and then there was race one and race two.
- 14:21So I went on race day, hyper focused on group four.
- 14:25Which was 1981 to 91 Trans Am, IMSA, GTO, all the big body cars, V8 stuff.
- 14:32Was hoping there was going to be a five cylinder fire breathing dragon of
- 14:36an Audi there, but it was still fun.
- 14:37Corvettes, and there was a Newman Nissan in the mix, so that was good.
- 14:41And then group six was vintage Formula One cars, which was just...
- 14:46Earshatteringly awesome.
- 14:47And then group 13, which was my absolute favorite.
- 14:51We had to stick around to the end of the day to watch them.
- 14:53You had Pat Long in his Celeste green, Bianchi blue,
- 14:57whatever you want to call it.
- 14:58Porsche 962 amongst other 962s, Audi R8, you had Jaguars, you had Buicks, you had
- 15:06Spice Budweiser cars, all sorts of stuff.
- 15:08Basically Le Mans prototypes, GTP cars celebrating, you know,
- 15:12the hundredth Le Mans that was.
- 15:15Spectacular to watch, especially big turbo cars running around Laguna Seca.
- 15:20Absolutely amazing.
- 15:21And Laguna is one of those awesome tracks where you can see from everywhere, but it
- 15:24requires a little bit of hiking to get to different vantage points, but absolutely
- 15:28amazing to be there on race day.
- 15:29You were there for motorcycles too, weren't you?
- 15:31There were bikes there, but I didn't see them.
- 15:34Were they running in the same day?
- 15:36Just different group.
- 15:37We got there a little later in the morning cause we had to cover.
- 15:40Portia works first, which I'm going to mention now.
- 15:42And then we ended up at Laguna lunchtime on, because we had looked at the
- 15:45schedule going, these are the three groups that we really want to see.
- 15:49So I missed the bikes and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:51But as you wandered the paddock, there was a little bit of everything.
- 15:54You've got a note here for Corvette 70th.
- 15:56Do you want to touch on that?
- 15:57Or that's a really great reminder.
- 15:59You know, we've mentioned many times.
- 16:00We have a special episode that we did with the IMRRC about
- 16:03the 70th birthday of Corvette.
- 16:05It coincides with Porsche's 75th.
- 16:07They're always trying to one up each other.
- 16:08So I kind of split hairs on thoughts.
- 16:11I was having a lot to track.
- 16:12I did a coverage of the Monterey Historics, but I also did an article
- 16:15called Porsche versus Corvette.
- 16:17Trying to decide whether or not one or the other is the every man's sports car.
- 16:21And you'll have to read it to find the conclusion.
- 16:24Is that the sequel to Ford versus Ferrari?
- 16:25Yeah, I think so.
- 16:26It's Porsche versus Corvette.
- 16:28But what was nice is they had a really cool display of Corvettes.
- 16:32I'd never seen in person.
- 16:33Some of the prototypes, the Aerovette was there.
- 16:36They had Ben Keating's Corvette that I saw live at Le Mans, the winning Corvette.
- 16:40So that was fun to walk through that outdoor museum that they set up and
- 16:44photograph that I have pictures of.
- 16:45Of all sorts of the different Corvettes that were there and they were making
- 16:48a big to do celebrating Corvette.
- 16:51And like I mentioned before, Porsche works, which is the PCA sponsored event.
- 16:55They were celebrating Porsche in style.
- 16:57Some of the craziest cars you've ever seen.
- 16:59Some of the craziest colors you've ever seen.
- 17:01I ran into the.
- 17:03Current executive director and former executive directors.
- 17:07That's Vu and Manny from PCA.
- 17:09And we had a chat.
- 17:10So they've agreed to come on the show in the future and do a crossover with us,
- 17:13but it was good to reconnect with them.
- 17:15They're in the same region that we're in here on the East coast.
- 17:17They actually did a segment on the crazy colors of Porsches at Porsche Works.
- 17:22So there's a video there on PCA.
- 17:23org to check out.
- 17:24So that was a lot of fun reconnecting with those guys.
- 17:26And Porsche Works was a great show to attend.
- 17:29It was free to anybody that wanted to go and check it out.
- 17:31To answer your question online on Instagram.
- 17:33Graham, the answer is always green.
- 17:35Always.
- 17:36So it's always green versus lime.
- 17:39Yeah, yeah, it's always lime.
- 17:40Lemon just doesn't look right on it unless it's a yellow bird.
- 17:43Well, it's funny.
- 17:44You bring up lemons.
- 17:45Cause I did go to the concourse.
- 17:47The lemons, please touch on.
- 17:50It's exactly what you expect.
- 17:52It's the hoopties.
- 17:53It's the rust buckets.
- 17:55It's the undesirables.
- 17:57It's the ugly cars.
- 17:58Like we talked about on our, what should I buy ugly cars episode?
- 18:00It's everything you can think of.
- 18:02And then some other stuff you didn't even know existed.
- 18:04I feel like you missed an opportunity to win something with your former Aztec.
- 18:11Wasn't mine.
- 18:12Didn't own it.
- 18:14Well, there was an Aztec there along with a silhouette, the dust buster of
- 18:18minivans and other stuff like that.
- 18:20Oh, the silhouette.
- 18:21That's the one that basically looks like Illumina.
- 18:23Yep.
- 18:24The guy actually had a dust buster on the windshield.
- 18:26It was hilarious.
- 18:27I was like, this is awesome.
- 18:28So the thing about concourse, the lemons is.
- 18:31Thank God it's free because you get exactly what you pay for.
- 18:35I did a video of it.
- 18:37It's on our YouTube.
- 18:38It's compressed.
- 18:39I literally it's concours de lemons in 60 seconds because that's really all you
- 18:43need to understand what happened there.
- 18:46So a lot of fun.
- 18:47It is a bit of a circus to prizes and giveaways.
- 18:50And the announcers are making fun of each other, making fun of the cars.
- 18:53And there's a guy on top of his vehicle riding a bucking Bronco.
- 18:57I mean, it's the weirdest stuff you've ever seen is at the show.
- 19:01So why not just enjoy it, right?
- 19:03It's part of car week.
- 19:04It's part of car culture.
- 19:05And that's what car week's about is the celebration of car culture.
- 19:09So then we step into the more serious side of car week.
- 19:12As we get closer to bevel, once you get to the Wednesday, Thursday, that's when
- 19:16everybody starts to arrive in town.
- 19:18The celebrities start to show up.
- 19:20Things are getting more serious.
- 19:21Cars are getting ready for the tour de Elegance, like all this kind of stuff.
- 19:24The auctions are.
- 19:25Still sort of going, but wrapping up.
- 19:27Everybody's trying to get to pebble, right?
- 19:29That is Nirvana for this entire week.
- 19:32So we took the time to go to concorso italiano touted as the largest
- 19:37collection of Italian cars, basically all in one spot other than Italy.
- 19:41True.
- 19:43I would like to think that Italy would win that by default.
- 19:46I think there was more Fiat's at this show than there is in Italy, though.
- 19:49I will say that.
- 19:50More running Fiat.
- 19:51You mean?
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:51A hundred percent.
- 19:52Absolutely gorgeous cars.
- 19:54When you come on through the gates, it's Lamborghini all day.
- 19:58And there's Lamborghinis that we talk about where it's like, Oh, the Halpa
- 20:02and the Jarama and the Espada and you're like, Oh, they're super cool.
- 20:05And there's six of them right there.
- 20:07And you're like, never seen so many in one spot at the same time.
- 20:10They had this neat stage set up.
- 20:12They had a fashion show.
- 20:14They had announcers and then they would take certain cars out of
- 20:17the field and then drive them in.
- 20:18I actually have a video of a Bizzarini Strada, which is the Bizzarini Coupe,
- 20:22which is Chevy V8 powered by the way.
- 20:25Yeehaw.
- 20:25And he's revving and idling and sitting there and it's just blah,
- 20:29blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 20:29You know, the whole thing like you'd expect from a Trans Am.
- 20:32So we've got that up.
- 20:33It was a lot of fun.
- 20:35I spent some time wandering around the Ferrari section and quickly realized
- 20:39I could buy merchandise at a Formula One race and it would be cheaper.
- 20:42I didn't bring anything home.
- 20:45That said, the Fiat's and the Alfa Romeo's though, I mean, if they had
- 20:49tucked them any further back, they would have been at a different car show.
- 20:52Like they were up over the hill, out of the way.
- 20:55Nobody wants to see X one nines.
- 20:57Maybe they were in a different car show.
- 20:59You just stumbled upon it.
- 21:00I had fun talking to those guys at a delightful conversation with a guy who
- 21:05did a custom livery on his alpha four C looked really slick, but your GTV sixes
- 21:10one 64s Milano's all the old stuff.
- 21:13I appreciate.
- 21:13I was hoping to see an alpha S Z, which is one of my favorites.
- 21:17It wasn't to be, but I did talk to a lot of X one nine owners and Fiat one 24 guys.
- 21:21That was really cool.
- 21:22I mean, Concorso was a lot of fun.
- 21:24You got to see the cars that we salivate over and you just drop a name.
- 21:28Countach, Diablo, 328, 348, Testarossa, 288.
- 21:33It didn't matter.
- 21:34They were all at that show.
- 21:35So it's really worth going to, if you appreciate Italian cars.
- 21:39Spoiler alert, cause you're going to talk about this later.
- 21:41Is this.
- 21:42Where you got to talk to the CEO of Lamborghini or was it a different event?
- 21:46No, I got to talk to Stefan Winkleman while I was at Pebble beach.
- 21:51That's another story for another time, like five minutes from now.
- 21:56So we went to a new event new for this year, sponsored by NECOM is called
- 22:01the Monterey motor sports festival.
- 22:03Shout out to David at MIE racing for bringing this to our attention.
- 22:07He knows some folks over there.
- 22:08He says, you got to go to the show.
- 22:09You got to cover it.
- 22:10You got to check it out.
- 22:11It's very different than anything I've described so far.
- 22:14It's sort of Monterey's version of grid life without the
- 22:18drifting and the track event.
- 22:19It's all the other parts of grid life.
- 22:21It's that festival.
- 22:22It's the music, it's newer cars.
- 22:24It's the things you don't see at all the other shows, right?
- 22:27The tuner cars, all the JDM stuff, because you walk around, you're like.
- 22:31Where's all, where's all the newer European stuff or newer Japanese cars.
- 22:34So you don't see a lot of that at the other shows.
- 22:36So it was nice, more bar speed, more my style.
- 22:40The older guys were just like, yeah, it's okay.
- 22:42It's cool.
- 22:43You know, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:44The food was hands down the best.
- 22:47Well, yeah, it's our people.
- 22:48Food truck food for the win.
- 22:50So they got that right.
- 22:51It was super awesome.
- 22:53The singers they had up on stage, Brad, I think you would have appreciated
- 22:56that they were really, really good.
- 22:58This one woman.
- 22:59Had a real knack for making herself sound like a Carly Simon or a Linda Ronstadt.
- 23:04She was very flexible, very adaptable in her singing.
- 23:07So that was a lot of fun.
- 23:08We actually watched her for quite a while and then, you know, took turns
- 23:11looking at different cars and stuff.
- 23:12Were they like a cover band or were they like a legitimate artist?
- 23:16No cover band.
- 23:17I don't remember her name, unfortunately.
- 23:18She's out of New York city.
- 23:19I'm sure we can look it up and see who it was.
- 23:21It was a great performance and it added a good ambience to the show.
- 23:25And in front of her on stage was a Maserati and then an old Packard.
- 23:29And oh, they had a mix of cars kind of highlighting all the different decades.
- 23:33And she made a point to mention that between songs as they were
- 23:36changing some of the instruments out.
- 23:38And that's also where I got an opportunity to see some cars from Mecham
- 23:41that I didn't see when I was there to include a wide body Speedster V8 914.
- 23:49Which was just off the charts insane.
- 23:52I was like, how did I know this thing was for sale?
- 23:53I might've bid on it.
- 23:54It's kind of cool.
- 23:55We have to ramp up the big two events.
- 23:57The ones that everybody talks about every year are the quail and pebble.
- 24:02And it comes down to which one do you go to?
- 24:05Which one do you spend the money to go to?
- 24:06Because both are very expensive.
- 24:08Both are very posh.
- 24:09If you look at the cover photo of the quail video that we just.
- 24:13Quickly put together, you kind of get an idea of what the quail is all about,
- 24:17but what's interesting is that even though it's sponsored by bottoms and
- 24:21it has been for many, many years, it's a little bit more modern than pebble.
- 24:25You had brands like singer there, you had Maserati showing off new cars.
- 24:29You had a new Bentley prototype Kia was there with some of their concept cars.
- 24:34So it was a little bit more.
- 24:36Modern, but it was a very upscale event.
- 24:39So it's really kind of cool to see that intersection between those two ideas
- 24:44represented at a very high profile concord before we get into pebble.
- 24:48I have to know what did you wear?
- 24:51Did you look like the help or did you look like someone who belonged there?
- 24:54Well, I was warned ahead of time that I needed to bring a change of clothes.
- 24:57A lot of events I went to polo shirt, jeans.
- 25:01Nicer shoes in Pacific Grove.
- 25:03You could go in jeans and a t shirt or shorts.
- 25:05Didn't really matter.
- 25:06Did you wear the yellow?
- 25:07Everyone has a story.
- 25:09I did not because I didn't want to look like a flagger.
- 25:14Apple is probably where I dressed up the most.
- 25:16You're talking slack sport coat, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 25:19It is more upscale.
- 25:20You know, you got to represent when you look around, everybody has those.
- 25:23Funny straw hats, which I thought about buying one, but when you look at the
- 25:26hat and it doesn't have a price in the price tag, you know, you probably
- 25:29don't or want or can't afford it.
- 25:31So I'm just like, I'm going to leave that alone.
- 25:33There's a lot of hype around pebble beach been around for 70 some odd years now
- 25:38on the golf course on the 18th fairway.
- 25:41It is supposed to be the epitome of luxury high life and all this kind of stuff.
- 25:45And some of the finest cars in the world.
- 25:47And one of the things I came to find out which I thought was really interesting
- 25:50is they've incorporated the concept cars and I got to see where the DeLorean
- 25:54reimagined was unveiled last year because they have other concept cars in that
- 25:58area that's actually before you even enter pebble basically was a really large
- 26:02putting green right near the pro shop.
- 26:05I also learned that cars that enter Pebble and not reenter Pebble
- 26:09for like upwards of a decade.
- 26:11So once it's been accepted and shown, you won't see that same
- 26:15car again at Pebble beach.
- 26:16They try to really mix it up.
- 26:18So you don't have the same champion every year or the same three cars competing.
- 26:21You're like, I've seen all these before.
- 26:23They want to mix it up.
- 26:24They really want to break up the show.
- 26:26It is sectioned off.
- 26:28So you've got like an entire section of pre war cars, Packards, preservation
- 26:33group, Porsche group, and you can go from group to group to group and kind
- 26:36of focus on what you really like.
- 26:38The difference between the Avants party and Quail, even Broad Arrows Radius.
- 26:44Pebble is where all the it people are.
- 26:47It's where all the celebrities come.
- 26:48It's where all the movie stars are.
- 26:50It's where all the CEOs and executives.
- 26:52I mean, I was 10 feet from the current CEO of Ford.
- 26:55I talked to Stefan from Lamborghini while I was standing next to Magnus Walker.
- 27:00And I've recognized other people that have been on the show and things like that.
- 27:03And it's just like, this is the who's who of California and of the
- 27:07automotive world all in one spot.
- 27:09And we're surrounded by the most beautiful cars you've ever seen.
- 27:11What's funny is the pebble actually has two books.
- 27:14There's the little field guide, which is packed full of information
- 27:16while you're looking at cars.
- 27:17And then there's the big pebble program, which is like the phone book, just full
- 27:21of stuff sponsored by Rolex, everything you come to expect from all these brands.
- 27:26It is a cut above, but the question becomes.
- 27:30If you're going to these shows as a civilian or as a layman, you really
- 27:33have to build Car Week on a budget.
- 27:35Pebble's not cheap.
- 27:36500 for a ticket.
- 27:38Scalper's up to 800.
- 27:39Quail's not cheap either.
- 27:41A lot of these events add up quick.
- 27:42So you got to have a big budget or decide, I want to just focus on
- 27:45this and then do all the surrounding shows and private parties.
- 27:48And there's something for everybody during Car Week.
- 27:50So you got to kind of make those financial decisions.
- 27:52It's not like I can do everything and be everywhere during Car Week.
- 27:56So pebble or Amelia Island that was thrown around a lot too, but having talked
- 28:01to people that have been to Amelia and not that there's anything wrong with
- 28:04Amelia, there's gorgeous cars there.
- 28:05They're coming from the East.
- 28:07There's not the rest of what makes up car week at Amelia.
- 28:10You go to Amelia for Amelia.
- 28:12There's not the driving tours and there are the private parties,
- 28:16but there's not 16 other car shows happening on the same day as Amelia.
- 28:20There's just.
- 28:21That one event.
- 28:22Now there's been talk that, you know, how the Haggerty's involved, that that's
- 28:25going to grow rebranding as radius, just like they did with the broad arrow event.
- 28:29So really interested to see how Emilia evolves.
- 28:32It would be really cool if it turned into another car week, but it's
- 28:36going to take some time to get there.
- 28:37Are you going to tell us about your conversation with Stefan or are
- 28:42you going to keep that to yourself?
- 28:43You know what?
- 28:44I'm going to save it for a future break fix episode.
- 28:46How about that?
- 28:47Yeah.
- 28:47And I do see here that you saw the new Kuntosh.
- 28:50I.
- 28:50Did tell us your thoughts, Mr.
- 28:53Hater.
- 28:54I don't hate it as much anymore.
- 28:57Imagine that it does look better in person than in pictures.
- 29:04It's not that it's horrible in picture.
- 29:06It's just, you're kind of like, is that right?
- 29:08Does that look right?
- 29:09When you see it coming, EB one 10 Bugatti, which doesn't photograph
- 29:14well either, but you see it in person, you're like, that's the Batmobile.
- 29:18And the Countach in that white, it's huge.
- 29:21It's wide.
- 29:22It's low, sort of like the old Countach, where it's just so over the
- 29:26top, you can't stop looking at it.
- 29:29And every angle you look at it, it's one of those cars, you see something else.
- 29:33And that's what you don't see in the photographs.
- 29:35Cause the photographs are almost too polished.
- 29:37They're almost too rendered, but to see it in person, I mean, I just stood there.
- 29:41And I'm just like, I don't know what to say.
- 29:43I like it.
- 29:44I still think Magnus's version of it is better, but you
- 29:46know, Hey, to each his own.
- 29:47All right.
- 29:48One of the other things that really stood out at pebble, we're talking
- 29:50about car spotting was the McLaren display right along the coastline.
- 29:54Awesome.
- 29:55And I stopped dead in my tracks.
- 29:56And just had a moment amongst all the noise.
- 29:59I had a moment of silence for Senna's F1 car, took all sorts of pictures of it.
- 30:04And, you know, it was funny as a guy walks up and, you know, I'm just kind of
- 30:06standing there, not like I'm meditating or, you know, kneeling down or anything,
- 30:10but he's like, whose car is this?
- 30:11Like I recognize it.
- 30:12And I'm like, bro, seriously.
- 30:15And he was an older guy and he's an admitted Formula One fan.
- 30:18I said to him, it's Senna's car.
- 30:20He's like, well, how do you know?
- 30:20And I was like, it's written right on the hoop, dude.
- 30:22But it's number 12.
- 30:24It's his car.
- 30:25It's pretty legendary Formula One car here.
- 30:27We had a good laugh and then we were chatting.
- 30:29So we continued to walk along.
- 30:30And then next to that was one of Donahue's McLarens.
- 30:33One of Bruce McLaren's McLaren's.
- 30:35Then you had Mika Hawkin's, McLaren, then you had James Hunt scaffolding
- 30:40multiple wings and all this crazy stuff.
- 30:42So that to me, as a racer and a motor sports enthusiast, that was awesome.
- 30:47That was my favorite part of Pebble and I didn't know it was gonna be there.
- 30:50So that just immediate surprise.
- 30:52As I came around the corner and their Senna's car and all the rest of 'em,
- 30:56I was just like, that sold it for me.
- 30:58That was amazing.
- 30:59And you didn't get arrested for trying to climb in.
- 31:01I'm proud of you.
- 31:01You know, my media pass gets me to certain places too.
- 31:04You know, cross over those chains a little bit.
- 31:07All in all, Car Week was amazing.
- 31:09It is completely a blur.
- 31:11We're talking 18 hour days, just nonstop.
- 31:14Go here, go there driving around.
- 31:16I think we clocked 2000 miles of driving or something insane.
- 31:20It's a lot of work, maybe not physically demanding, but
- 31:22it's just mentally stressful.
- 31:24You're looking at the events, not through the eyes of a participant either.
- 31:27You're looking at it through the eyes of the press.
- 31:28What looks good?
- 31:29Camera angles is the lighting, right?
- 31:31And there's a lot of decisions.
- 31:32How are we going to use this?
- 31:33Make sure you grab that car because that could be a winner.
- 31:36So you got to photograph everything.
- 31:38It's kind of nuts at the end of the day, but I don't want to say it was a
- 31:41once in a lifetime opportunity, but it was definitely something I'm glad I'm
- 31:44now able to check off my bucket list.
- 31:46And I did it in a big, big way.
- 31:48Well with that, it's time we move on to Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche news.
- 31:52What is this thing?
- 31:53What is this?
- 31:54Oh yeah!
- 31:55I don't know what this is, but apparently it's Audi honoring 150 years since
- 32:01manufacturing began in Neckarsalem.
- 32:05It's called the NSU Prins 4.
- 32:08And it's unrecognizable as an Audi?
- 32:11NSU, for those that don't know the wider history of the auto union, was one of the
- 32:16four circles in the rings of Audi, right?
- 32:18So NSU was absorbed into the auto union and the NSU Prince was one of
- 32:23these little like Nash metropolitan things that they made back in the day.
- 32:28NSU is also where the Wankel, the rotary was born.
- 32:32So side by side with the original one, this looks so much better.
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:36It's a re imagination of the original NSU prints.
- 32:39I've really liked it.
- 32:39It kind of reminds me of what Alpine is doing with the new R5.
- 32:43I don't necessarily feel good about the back of it.
- 32:46I don't understand, like it's got a very long trunk lid and a very
- 32:50long rear spoiler wing thing.
- 32:53Double spoiler action going on.
- 32:55It's the fender flares that do it for me.
- 32:57I like the fender flares.
- 32:58So I like the look from the front.
- 33:00It's very low.
- 33:00It's very squat.
- 33:01It's boxy, but with round headlights, although they're oval, but with two
- 33:05round headlights inside the oval.
- 33:07Okay.
- 33:07So aren't those the Rivian lights just turned on their side?
- 33:10They're reminiscent.
- 33:13They could be, they probably sourced them from the same place Rivian did.
- 33:16Again, this is right up there with the re imagined R5, the Opal Manta EV.
- 33:21Some of the other ones that have come out, this is not going anywhere.
- 33:24This is just a concept, right?
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:26Can they make it?
- 33:27I mean, I'd be happy with it.
- 33:29I see.
- 33:29Unfortunately, nobody's going to buy that a rich person is going to buy
- 33:32it just to say that they have it.
- 33:33There's nothing practical about that car.
- 33:35It's so small considering how it actually looks smaller than the original.
- 33:40I'm going to guess the original is not that big, right?
- 33:43It's not practical enough for today's standards.
- 33:46Well, let's talk about another car that's being reimagined.
- 33:49Porsche made an announcement.
- 33:51Their Vision 357 Speedster, celebrating 75 years.
- 33:56Yes.
- 33:57So what is this?
- 33:58It's a car.
- 33:59It's like a weird 356.
- 34:04But I like it, but I don't, I don't know what to think of it.
- 34:07Like there's really cool aspects to it.
- 34:09I think the wheels are really neat.
- 34:10I like that grill in the back that reminds me of a three 56 with those
- 34:14striations that they had, you know, back then that canopy is obviously
- 34:18from the three 56 speedster.
- 34:19There's some elements of the five 50 spider in this car.
- 34:22They could have also just called it an electric boxster.
- 34:25Yeah.
- 34:25And that's what I'm trying to figure out.
- 34:26So it's obviously mid engine, but the front clip still looks like a nine 11.
- 34:30Like an old 911, but it doesn't have headlights either.
- 34:34So I'm trying to figure out how that works or it does.
- 34:37And it's just like, they beam through perforations.
- 34:40I don't know.
- 34:40I'd have to see it in person.
- 34:41It's kind of cool.
- 34:42Again, it's a concept, so they're probably not going to build it.
- 34:45It's just to, I guess, celebrate 75 years of Porsche.
- 34:4975 years of the 356.
- 34:51Yeah.
- 34:52Well, and this is just it.
- 34:53This is what I expected when they were making that big reveal when Le
- 34:57Mans was happening on June the 8th.
- 34:59And then they revealed the 9X.
- 35:01We were guessing that it was going to be some sort of homage to the 356.
- 35:05It didn't happen.
- 35:06So here we are a month later and yes, okay, so there is a 356
- 35:09sort of prototype speedster car.
- 35:11I don't think it would be kind of cool to make something like this.
- 35:14There is a hardtop version.
- 35:16Really?
- 35:17That was the one they announced back in January.
- 35:19You can see the picture.
- 35:20Yes.
- 35:21Which also from the side profile side, it's kind of actually
- 35:24pretty hideous, but it's got weird elements of different past Porsches.
- 35:27And that's probably the whole point.
- 35:29But I will also say, I think it's funny that maybe they'll go
- 35:32back to the 300 series numbers.
- 35:35Cause I feel like Porsche has exhausted the nine hundreds at this point.
- 35:38I mean, that's why we have nine, nine, one dot one and nine, nine, one dot two.
- 35:42And because they're just running out of model numbers.
- 35:44So maybe going back to the three, five, six, and maybe a handful of
- 35:49others gives them an opportunity to make some different models, but
- 35:52think about the marketing event that would be to have the Porsche 1000.
- 35:58And that's something Don and I were joking about, you know, these guys
- 36:00talking about their nine, nine, one dot two and nine, nine, two dot whatever.
- 36:04When he goes.
- 36:04Tell them you have a 9, 9 1 0.4 and see what happens.
- 36:08Because they'll be like, wait a minute.
- 36:08They didn't make that.
- 36:09What, when did the dot three come out?
- 36:11Like you get 'em all wrapped around the axle on something
- 36:13like that, but dot whatever.
- 36:15It's almost like software.
- 36:16It's like, oh, windows 10, do one, do two, three.
- 36:19I'm like, whatever.
- 36:20It's a, an automotive patch, . We'll talk about that in a little bit.
- 36:23I like the 3 57, both the speedster and the coop.
- 36:27I think they're cool.
- 36:28I would take one if I fit and if they made it and if I could afford it.
- 36:31There are a lot of variables there that I need to meet before I can take one piece.
- 36:35Hmm.
- 36:35Well, with that, we need to move on to STIs.
- 36:39We actually have some news coming from Chrysler, Dodge Fiat and
- 36:43the whole conglomerate, the new 2025 Dodge stealth Durango.
- 36:49Did I read that right?
- 36:50What?
- 36:53What exactly?
- 36:54So is it a Stealth or is it a Durango?
- 36:56It's a Stealth Durango.
- 36:57Oh.
- 36:58It's a Durango in Stealth mode that you don't know it's a Durango.
- 37:02Oh.
- 37:02Okay.
- 37:03It's just a Jeep.
- 37:04It's incognito.
- 37:05It looks like a big Hornet.
- 37:07It looks better than the Hornet.
- 37:08Like a big square.
- 37:09Hornet.
- 37:10With 24 inch wheels, or whatever those look like.
- 37:13Because the hornet in pictures, although we've seen it in
- 37:16person I saw one on the road.
- 37:18It looks like the dart was stretched upwards, like a car
- 37:21that they turned into an SUV.
- 37:23What is that weird Stellantis badge on the front?
- 37:26That's the Dodge.
- 37:27That's the two red stripes.
- 37:29Is that all that is?
- 37:29I thought it was an S.
- 37:31No.
- 37:31Whatever it is, it looks stupid.
- 37:33Which is confusing because the Grand Sport has those two
- 37:36slashes on the Corvette, right?
- 37:38Yeah, the Grand Sport does on the Fender, eh?
- 37:40I don't know what it all means.
- 37:41All I know is that I've heard nothing but commercials about Dodge
- 37:46and the Brotherhood of Muscle.
- 37:47I feel like this is...
- 37:49In that same realm, it's a muscly SUV has those things on the top of the
- 37:54fenders that remind me of the Land Rover.
- 37:56The defender would love to see what that actually does in real life.
- 38:00Nothing.
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:01I would be curious to see it in real life.
- 38:03It's interesting.
- 38:04Yes.
- 38:04So still at this news, Dodge is coming out with a new Durango.
- 38:08They're calling it the stealth because they're idiots and some other
- 38:11idiots are going to buy it moving on.
- 38:13And the sad part is there's only one photograph and I
- 38:16think it's just a rendering.
- 38:17No, so there's a second photograph if you click in with a different
- 38:21logo, with a different emblem.
- 38:23You're right.
- 38:23You're right.
- 38:24The grill is slightly different, but there's no shots from the back.
- 38:26And if you do look at their rear quarter panel, it is a little disconcerting.
- 38:31It's probably just a rendering.
- 38:32It probably does not exist.
- 38:34Are there no pictures in those 13 photos?
- 38:36Nope.
- 38:36It's all pictures of old Durangos.
- 38:38There's a picture at the beginning and a picture at the end.
- 38:41100 percent clickbait.
- 38:43Well, it's Motor Trend, what do you expect?
- 38:45Well, you know what isn't clickbait?
- 38:46Our domestic news brought to us by American Muscle, your source for Ford,
- 38:50Chevy, and sometimes Mopar parts.
- 38:54We participated in a zoom session over the last month with Ben
- 38:58Keating from team Corvette by way of our friends at the ACO USA.
- 39:03And if you tuned into the show this month, you'll see that we also
- 39:06interviewed David Lowe, the administrator for the American arm of the ACO.
- 39:11And so we can get into more details on that.
- 39:12You tune back into break fix, but it was a really great.
- 39:15Hour long presentation by Ben.
- 39:17He talks about his experience winning Le Mans.
- 39:20It's like the second or third time he's done it, obviously with different teams.
- 39:22We got the announcement that GM is officially sunsetting the factory
- 39:26team, but that doesn't mean that's the end of Corvette at Le Mans.
- 39:29What was really cool was listening to him talk about the driver changes,
- 39:34driving at night, how hard it was, and the race to the end, especially
- 39:38when they were a couple laps down and they came from the back of the
- 39:40pack, you know, in GTLM to win it.
- 39:43It's available, especially if you become a member of the ACO, you
- 39:46can check it out on their Facebook group, the zoom session is out there,
- 39:49but it's a really great evening, great discussion with Ben Keating.
- 39:52I mentioned we were at pebble beach and I ran into the CEO of Ford.
- 39:57I'm just going to read the headline Ford tried to be Tesla and it cost the company.
- 40:03Billions and then I look down and I see a picture of Jim Farley and he's like
- 40:08rubbing the hood of this F 150 lightning like he's Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
- 40:13And all I could keep thinking was my precious, my precious, but the result
- 40:19of all of this, if you summarize the article is Ford cut the price.
- 40:22Of the F 150 and its stocks took a nosedive.
- 40:26Which is apt to happen when somebody does that and then investors get all scared.
- 40:32I'm scared.
- 40:32Does it mean anything?
- 40:34TBD remains to be seen.
- 40:35It's all bullshit.
- 40:36Like, I don't understand how Tesla is so successful.
- 40:39Carbon credits.
- 40:40Works out really well for Tesla.
- 40:42Because there's this side funneling of money into the company.
- 40:46From tech bros and people that, you know, refuse to let their investment die.
- 40:50Or Elon himself, just funneling his own money in there, probably.
- 40:54Yeah.
- 40:54But Ford just has normal customers, so they don't play that game.
- 40:59Don says it all the time.
- 41:00You sell more Fords than Ferraris.
- 41:03And so if they can make something that appeals to the masses, like the F 150,
- 41:07just got to get the recipe, right?
- 41:09People bought on to the Tesla bandwagon, just like the iPhone.
- 41:13And so is the Ford F 150 the Android?
- 41:16I don't want to make that analogy, but you kind of get my point, right?
- 41:20The F 150, as we've said before, is the best selling vehicle in North America.
- 41:24The question is, was electrifying it the right move?
- 41:27I've also heard that Ford is backing the throttle off on V6 EcoBoost
- 41:34150s and they're moving back to V8s.
- 41:36So what does that mean exactly?
- 41:39What's old is new again.
- 41:40The coyote.
- 41:41Oh!
- 41:42Funny little tidbit, Elon Musk actually commented on the price of the F 150
- 41:46Lightning saying it's too expensive.
- 41:49Oh, there's the popcorn, the kettle black.
- 41:50He was complimentary saying that the Ford Lightning was a good vehicle, though.
- 41:54Good vehicle, yes, but somewhat expensive, especially given the high interest rates.
- 41:59And so the Ford is what, like 40, 000 right now?
- 42:02Something around that?
- 42:03It's supposed to be 40, 000 or started 40, but they were selling around 50, 000.
- 42:07The Cybertruck's going to be, it starts around 50 and depending on what
- 42:11you do, tri motor, bi motor, single motor, quadruple motor, they don't even
- 42:15have prices out yet when they first announced that they had prices and
- 42:18the tri motor was supposed to be like 75 to 80 because that's the one that
- 42:22I have on hold for a hundred dollars.
- 42:24That I'm still trying to give away people.
- 42:26Somebody, please contact us through our channels to buy my
- 42:32100 deposit on a cyber truck.
- 42:35I will give it away for 5.
- 42:38Oh, I thought it was a bag of tacos from Taco Bell.
- 42:41That's about 5.
- 42:44Switching to.
- 42:45Japanese and Asian imports.
- 42:48More news on the Hyundai N74 that we like so much.
- 42:52Did you guys see this latest, quote unquote, production version?
- 42:56No, but I'm following this page.
- 42:58Something about it that looks different than the other.
- 43:00It looks boring.
- 43:02Yes, it's the missing the wing.
- 43:03It's missing like the air ducts, I think, on the side that the other one had.
- 43:08Some of the ground effects are less aggressive on this.
- 43:11It reminds me of the Subaru SVX.
- 43:13Not quite that level of weird, but yes, to your point.
- 43:17You know what it looks like, Tanya?
- 43:18It looks like a Stereon.
- 43:20It looks like a Conquest TSI.
- 43:22Yeah, I can see that.
- 43:22I can see that.
- 43:23It still has the flares, but the rest of the car is just sort of like, meh.
- 43:27Which I can't hate that comment, but.
- 43:30They could be doing like Toyota did.
- 43:31Toyota, when they released the Supra, they had a bunch of what looked
- 43:35like fake vents and stuff like that.
- 43:37Right.
- 43:37And it was theorized.
- 43:38That they were put on there on purpose to sell performance
- 43:42parts and packages in the future.
- 43:44So maybe you can add the wing and some of the more radical pieces later on.
- 43:50Either that or some aftermarket's going to make them.
- 43:52Yeah, exactly.
- 43:53Maybe this is just the base model.
- 43:55And that's okay too.
- 43:55Like maybe if there's a base model and then there's like the GT model.
- 44:00When the 350z came out, there was the base 350z and it went all the
- 44:03way up to the performance or track version that had various different.
- 44:07Options and stuff.
- 44:08Well, it's almost like this is like the base coupe GT and but
- 44:12we need like the URQ next to it.
- 44:15Yeah, the sport quattro.
- 44:16Exactly.
- 44:17I will say I hate it in this silver color.
- 44:19It looks like it was born in the 80s.
- 44:21It would look really cool white.
- 44:23Or red.
- 44:23Yeah, it wouldn't look really that great in black because I think you
- 44:27lose all of its shape in black.
- 44:29Black cars are gorgeous.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:30The silver it's reminiscent of too many other cars that are
- 44:34coming out in silver right now.
- 44:35Even that three 57 we were just talking about as a silver and white combination.
- 44:39But if it was that Kuntosh white with the black accents, I can see that really
- 44:44playing it to the strength of this car.
- 44:46Yes.
- 44:46Yes.
- 44:46Yes.
- 44:47So we'll see, maybe it's just another rendering.
- 44:49We don't know what the real thing looks like, but I was a little
- 44:51disappointed when I saw that.
- 44:52I was like, it's very watered down in comparison to the track toy that
- 44:57has been teased multiple times over.
- 44:59Speaking of track toys, you guys remember the S2000?
- 45:02Yes, I do.
- 45:03I went for a ride in an autocross in one once.
- 45:06I recently instructed in one.
- 45:07What did you think of the S2000, Tanya?
- 45:09You know what?
- 45:10I had never been in one.
- 45:12I have only been around cheater ones.
- 45:15I was actually pleasantly surprised by its neutral handling.
- 45:20And it's motorcycle like engine.
- 45:21You know, it's not the fastest thing, but it's also not slow.
- 45:26I heard they suffer from snap oversteer.
- 45:28They do, that is true.
- 45:30I was instructing someone who wasn't pushing that aggressively, so we didn't
- 45:34ever encounter anything like that.
- 45:36Thankfully, that's good.
- 45:38And if you watch Initial D, the S2000 is God hand.
- 45:41So in the passenger seat, the way this gentleman was
- 45:44driving, it felt very neutral.
- 45:46It didn't do anything weird, which could also be that it doesn't have
- 45:49enough power to break it loose.
- 45:51But to Brad's point, when they do snap, they go around, they come.
- 45:55They're a great drift car.
- 45:56I mean, everybody that I've ever talked to says they're
- 45:59amazing when they're sideways.
- 46:00I've ridden in some S2000s.
- 46:01I've driven a couple of myself.
- 46:02They're always kind of a fun little roadster.
- 46:05For me, the Achilles heel was the engine VTEC kicks in at 7, 000 RPM.
- 46:09And you got to wring its neck to almost 10 to get it to do anything.
- 46:13Yeah.
- 46:14The noise is awesome, but excruciating at the same time.
- 46:16Cause you're like, I feel really bad for this engine that I have
- 46:19to rev it out like a motorcycle.
- 46:21But what have I told you?
- 46:22Honda was gonna come back with the S 2000 as an ev.
- 46:26I don't even care about any of that.
- 46:28I saw the picture of this thing and it's atrocious looking.
- 46:31I don't care what it runs on fairy dust or not, like this thing needs to go away.
- 46:36It looks like a cross between the new N S X and Adel soul.
- 46:40You read my mind, Brad.
- 46:41'cause I was thinking the same thing.
- 46:43I will say I did see a brand new N Ss X.
- 46:45On the highway the other day, and it was beautiful.
- 46:48I almost started drooling.
- 46:50It looks so good next to me.
- 46:51And there's really pretty bright blue color.
- 46:53This does not look like that though.
- 46:55This looks like the Honda Del Sol kind of took over the styling portion of it.
- 46:59Cause it has that Targa bar thing going on with the rear glass there for what
- 47:03you can see from these pictures, which there are not a ton, but yeah, the front
- 47:05end, it's got that beak, like the older Acura's had and the NSX that it shares
- 47:10with, I think the wheels are cool.
- 47:12I think the importance of the article, though, is to get interest or the thing we
- 47:16should touch on is how do we feel about an S2000 replacement or successor as an EV?
- 47:23I don't think it would look like this.
- 47:24I think this is just somebody's stupid rendering.
- 47:26And Tanya just made the point that she doesn't even care about all that.
- 47:28You know, Evie, not Evie, whatever.
- 47:30It doesn't matter.
- 47:31I think if it was like a mini version of the NSX and had to hybrid technology,
- 47:36like a smaller version of the NSX is power plant, I think it would be pretty cool.
- 47:40So then why not just build an NSX convertible at that point?
- 47:43Because the NSX is 200 plus.
- 47:45Something thousand dollars and the S 2000 should be around 50 something.
- 47:49And how much do you think this is going to be?
- 47:51It should be around 40 or 50.
- 47:53We'll ask Elon and see how much it should be.
- 47:55He's just going to shoot it into space.
- 47:58That's an episode for another day too.
- 48:00I actually met the guy that designed the roadster.
- 48:03So that was kind of fun.
- 48:04Oh, you mean, uh, Colin Chapman?
- 48:06Yeah.
- 48:06Well, you know, Tanya hit the nail on the head.
- 48:09It's all sort of meh at the end of the day with, is it gas?
- 48:11Is it diesel?
- 48:12Is it EV?
- 48:13Is it hybrid?
- 48:13Is it whatever Toyota is again, back in the news saying meh to EVs.
- 48:19They have not, and they are still not building full EVs.
- 48:23They're sticking to hybrid.
- 48:24They've invested a ton of money in hydrogen.
- 48:26And it was really funny.
- 48:27I had a conversation while I was out in California with some Tesla owners, and I
- 48:31brought up the fact that there's a lot of companies moving to combustible hydrogen.
- 48:36It's not just Toyota.
- 48:37We mentioned in the last episode, Bosch and Ligier and BMWs going
- 48:41down this route for a while.
- 48:42There's a bunch of others that are looking to combustible hydrogen.
- 48:45It was really funny because the pushback I got.
- 48:47Especially when I mentioned Bosch, which I recognize as a global partner
- 48:51in the automotive industry, gentlemen said, I don't know who Bosch is.
- 48:57And hydrogen is not sustainable long term.
- 48:59And I'm like, wait, excuse me.
- 49:02So strip mining, the earth and Mars.
- 49:05I'm super hopeful and backing Toyota's thought that EV is a stopgap right now to
- 49:11this idea of combustible hydrogen, if they can solve the containment and distribution
- 49:16puzzle, which is going to take decades.
- 49:19I mean, they also have to solve the acquiring piece as well, but the acquiring
- 49:24piece is also a problem with EVs.
- 49:25There's only so much lithium to go around.
- 49:27We don't have a great recycling program for it.
- 49:29And yes, We'll talk more about infrastructure changes in the
- 49:32future, but we're still not there.
- 49:34There was a report that came out even the other day where they're
- 49:37saying that EV sales have plateaued.
- 49:39All the early adopters have adopted and we're at 7%.
- 49:43And nobody else can afford these cars.
- 49:45Yep.
- 49:46Not at seven or 8 percent interest rates.
- 49:48Who can afford it?
- 49:49That and we're at market saturation at like seven or 8 percent of cars or EV.
- 49:54But the article I was reading was saying that to get from like 8 percent
- 49:58to 12 percent saturation, it's going to take another decade to do that.
- 50:02And in that decade, what other technology is going to come out?
- 50:05You have to have disposable income.
- 50:07You're in a certain bracket financially to just go out and be
- 50:12like, I'm going to dump my car.
- 50:13That's.
- 50:14Probably maybe paid for and has nothing wrong with it.
- 50:16And go spend 60 plus a charging system in your home, plus whatever
- 50:20else, I mean, you've got money to play with your average person.
- 50:24Who's trying to make ends meet.
- 50:25They're going to keep running their Toyota Corolla until it
- 50:28Chernobyl's in like 50 years.
- 50:30They're still driving their 1990 Camry.
- 50:32Yeah.
- 50:32EVs, EVs are still a niche affluent market.
- 50:35Well, you want to talk about niche affluent markets.
- 50:38How about.
- 50:38Luxury sedans that are turned into big SUVs with off road capability.
- 50:44How did you enjoy your Lexus?
- 50:46Our press car was a 2024 yet to be released to the general masses.
- 50:50LX 600 in a seaweed green.
- 50:54There's a full article that Don from Garage Style Magazine wrote about it.
- 50:57And we took a.
- 50:59It was nice.
- 51:00There were some things that were different about it, things that I
- 51:03didn't expect, like four independent captain's chairs in the vehicle, right?
- 51:07No third row seating in that thing.
- 51:08It had a parcel shelf behind the back row.
- 51:10It did cut into the trunk space a bit.
- 51:12I could control the front seats.
- 51:15from a Captain Kirk like console in the back, which was pretty cool.
- 51:19I could change the air con, the radio, like I had this whole thing.
- 51:22Like I felt like I was on the Enterprise.
- 51:25So was Don Ubering you around?
- 51:27There was a bunch of us.
- 51:28So yes, but Don was our Uber.
- 51:30He got to drive most of the time.
- 51:32It has.
- 51:32Really fast adapting air ride suspension.
- 51:36Like my Jeep has air ride, but it's the Mercedes system.
- 51:38So it's a little slow and it's comfy and generations old too.
- 51:43True.
- 51:43It's 10 years old.
- 51:44The Toyota reacts almost too fast in some instances.
- 51:48And we found that the ride initially was really, really
- 51:51harsh and we had to soften it up.
- 51:53If you went over a speed bump slowly.
- 51:55Like one with collector cars tends to do, or even with sports cars,
- 51:59you know, you want to roll up to the speed bump and cross over it.
- 52:01You would have thought a landmine was going off underneath the Lexus, but if
- 52:05you hit that sucker at 30 miles an hour, smooth as glass, it was really bizarre.
- 52:10We had to readjust the suspension, which we could do, but you can
- 52:13only do it when it was parked.
- 52:14And then it's buried in the menu system.
- 52:16And so that was a little kludgy, but it also had things like the climate.
- 52:21Concierge, which I'm still not 100 percent sure what that button does.
- 52:25I mean, it had heated and cooled everything from the back of your neck to
- 52:30the ball chiller to the massaging seat.
- 52:33I mean, it had everything you could possibly think of
- 52:35because it was fully loaded.
- 52:36Sticker price before taxes, tags, delivery, and anything else that
- 52:40could maybe get loaded on like optional paint colors or paint to
- 52:44sample or whatever you want to do.
- 52:45We were looking at above 130, 000.
- 52:48On the website it shows 92, 000.
- 52:49This one optioned out was above 130.
- 52:51Well, yeah, optioned out.
- 52:52Yeah.
- 52:53But base is 92.
- 52:54Would I buy one?
- 52:56No, it's a Sequoia underneath.
- 52:58So I don't know.
- 52:59The thing is I thought it was a V8, but it wasn't, it was a twin turbo six.
- 53:03It was a definite get up and go engine.
- 53:04It would make like 500 foot pounds of torque or something like that.
- 53:07And it was quick for as stout as that vehicle is.
- 53:10But the bigger problem was for all that luxury and all the gizmos and.
- 53:14The electronic rearview mirror, like it doesn't actually have a rearview
- 53:17mirror and all these sensors and all this stuff that it has, you kind
- 53:21of go, well, that's going to break.
- 53:22How long is that going to last?
- 53:23I mean, Toyota quality, right?
- 53:25Sure.
- 53:25But eventually with use things wear out.
- 53:28The biggest issue was we're doing a lot of highway miles.
- 53:31We were filling it every other day.
- 53:33And with California gas prices of near.
- 53:366 a gallon for super because it's twin turbo.
- 53:39You have to run super in it.
- 53:41That's costly.
- 53:42Big time money to keep that thing on the road and keep it running.
- 53:46If you have a hundred thousand dollars to spend on that, you have
- 53:49the money to spend on the fuel.
- 53:51Maybe I don't disagree.
- 53:53I will say it turned a lot of heads.
- 53:54A lot of people were like, we've never seen this.
- 53:56What is this?
- 53:57And we're like.
- 53:57It's the new Lexus LX 600.
- 53:59They wanted to see inside it.
- 54:01That color was really unique, especially with the baseball knit interior.
- 54:04It looked really good together.
- 54:06It was a head turner.
- 54:07The grill is probably its major drawback.
- 54:10It looks better from the back than the front.
- 54:12It looks like a Range Rover from the back, the way they
- 54:15cut the bumpers and everything.
- 54:16But they went from that honeycombed Black Widow grill
- 54:20to this just full on face mask.
- 54:23Like, it's got braces and then some.
- 54:25Luckily, Toyota didn't chrome it.
- 54:27It's like a satin finish, but like brushed aluminum.
- 54:30So it doesn't reflect everything and anything it can.
- 54:33So.
- 54:34It's still a little ostentatious, but you can live with it.
- 54:38And again, for the full review on the Lexus, you can jump back to our
- 54:41website, or you can go over to Garage Style and read more about the Lexus
- 54:44and see more pictures and stuff.
- 54:46But now I'm going to pass the baton to Tanya to talk about other
- 54:49random new EVs and concept cars.
- 54:51There's less car or concept, but a infrastructure update.
- 54:55Apparently the EU is passing a law to blanket their highways.
- 54:59By 2025 with fast EV chargers that must be placed every 37 miles.
- 55:07That's for like all the Fiat 500Es and stuff.
- 55:10It's a lot of chargers, but focusing on the Trans European Transport Network,
- 55:16the TEN T as they call it, which is like the Designated major arteries through
- 55:21all the different European countries.
- 55:22That's where their main focus is of putting all of these chargers.
- 55:25So think just, you know, major highways.
- 55:27It's a step.
- 55:29So you're saying every Alto grill on the Alto strata, the solar is going
- 55:33to have an EV charger, basically.
- 55:34And then some, I would imagine, cause the Alto grills are not every 37 miles.
- 55:40This is going to be costly because it's not just, Oh, we're
- 55:42just going to put in a charger.
- 55:44You've got to put in pavement.
- 55:46And you got to.
- 55:47Builds the mini gas station.
- 55:49You're probably going to have a restroom.
- 55:51Someone's got to maintain it.
- 55:52I don't know.
- 55:53Cause it almost seems like they're just going to literally be like
- 55:55little outposts because everything has to be self service, self pay.
- 55:59There can't be any need for a person there.
- 56:02No cash.
- 56:03You got to be able to do contactless payment, blah, blah, blah.
- 56:06So if that's the case and they're every 37 miles and there's an auto
- 56:09grill in between, you're going to go make a stop at the auto grill and
- 56:12get a sandwich and then go charge.
- 56:15I don't know that you need to have all those amenities if
- 56:18you're just needing to top off.
- 56:20Yeah.
- 56:20And if you're in France, you don't need a bathroom.
- 56:22From my understanding.
- 56:23So.
- 56:24True.
- 56:24True.
- 56:24Back to a previous episode where the men in France just let her rip anywhere.
- 56:29I got memories to prove that.
- 56:30In other EV news, the Consumer Reports has issued the 10 EVs that
- 56:36should last more than 300, 000 miles.
- 56:39How much should all the other ones last?
- 56:40All the other ones are Teslas.
- 56:42So all the other cars are junk?
- 56:44Build quality of cars is supposed to be getting better.
- 56:46So you're telling me there's only 10 cars on this planet
- 56:48that'll get to 300, 000 miles?
- 56:50No, no, no.
- 56:50Of the EVs out there, only EVs should last more than 300, 000 miles.
- 56:56I don't know what that means.
- 56:58Most of the car is no different.
- 57:00Then another car, right?
- 57:01Like the body, if you're saying the body can last here in a thousand
- 57:04miles, well, we know that that's true of cars that are decades old, right?
- 57:09They're still out there.
- 57:10Maybe they're rusted, but they're still out there.
- 57:11You know, and to Tanya's point about cars going the distance,
- 57:14I met a gentleman while I was in Monterey who has a three 56.
- 57:19That's about to go into the history books with almost 1 million.
- 57:23Original miles.
- 57:24And so once it crosses a million, it'll go into the Porsche museum.
- 57:28And what he's doing, he's only got about 20, 000 miles left.
- 57:30You could actually sign up to take a drive for whatever time or length.
- 57:35And then your name would go in the log book at Porsche that you
- 57:38added miles to this three 56.
- 57:41Think about that, right?
- 57:42There are cars out there that will do that.
- 57:44There's been Volvos.
- 57:45There's been other cars that have reached a million miles.
- 57:47So 300, 000.
- 57:49Yeah, okay.
- 57:51Let's prove it.
- 57:51Let's see it.
- 57:52Are you telling me the battery pack is gonna last 300, 000 miles?
- 57:56I don't think there's enough data, cyclic testing data,
- 57:59out there to support that yet.
- 58:01That was the other thing that bugged me about this, based on what information.
- 58:04Haven't you tested the car for 300, 000 miles?
- 58:06Put them on a treadmill like it's Ferris Bueller and just,
- 58:09like, let them go or something?
- 58:10Like, what is this?
- 58:11I don't think they really explained.
- 58:13Other than, like, it should and warranties cover.
- 58:16This entire article is BS.
- 58:18And then they just list out the Kona, and the Mini Cooper, and the Bolt, and
- 58:23the i3, and the Model S, and the ID.
- 58:254, and the Mach E.
- 58:26Do you notice that all of these cars are in a similar price range too?
- 58:30Are they?
- 58:32I don't think so.
- 58:33I don't think a Leaf or a Bolt are on the same level as a Model S.
- 58:37No, the Model S is the exception here because they have to have one
- 58:39expensive car, but the rest of them are in that 30, 000 to 40, 000 range.
- 58:43The Mach E is not in the 30, 000 to 40, 000 range.
- 58:45Yeah, it is.
- 58:46The Mach E is only like 42, 000.
- 58:5030 to 40, 000.
- 58:51It's 42, so it's not in a 30 to 40, 000 range.
- 58:55I think you'd be hard pressed to get out of a dealership with
- 58:57a Ford Mach E for less than 45.
- 58:59For all those people interested in a Ford Mustang Mach E, they start at 42, 995.
- 59:05Start.
- 59:05In the Select trim, the Premium trim 46, 995, the California Route 1 56,
- 59:10995, and if you're gonna go all out.
- 59:13And why wouldn't you, the GT trim 59, nine, nine, five, Eric was taking into
- 59:20account the government kickback credit minus 7, 500 baby, the tax credit.
- 59:26That's what he was doing.
- 59:27Yeah.
- 59:27But who's buying the base model.
- 59:29And the only reason the Tesla model S is on here is because there's
- 59:31one person in 2017 who showed that they had one over 300, 000 miles.
- 59:37I don't even know why this is a thing.
- 59:39Nobody, who, like, the majority of people aren't keeping their car that long.
- 59:43A car gets 100, 000 miles, and they're like, Oh, this thing's gonna die, this
- 59:46thing's trash, I gotta get rid of it.
- 59:47100, 000?
- 59:48It's like, Oh my god, I turned 70, 000, my car needs to go.
- 59:52Yeah, that's sort of an old way of thinking, because if you think about
- 59:55the Malays era, those cars, if they made it to 100, 000, that was a lot.
- 59:59That was incredible, it was a feat.
- 1:00:01So I think we're sort of stuck in the idea that 100, 000 is time to go.
- 1:00:05In my opinion, I'm saying, Cars got to make it to a quarter
- 1:00:08million or it's junk at least 250.
- 1:00:10It could be the hour.
- 1:00:12It's been a long day.
- 1:00:14I had to go to the NBA.
- 1:00:17I have to go back to the NBA.
- 1:00:19That should say it all.
- 1:00:20You know, it's all fuzzy math, just like this next article.
- 1:00:24I don't understand what it's saying.
- 1:00:28I don't think they understand what they wrote.
- 1:00:30I don't understand what I read.
- 1:00:32Most cars still cost more to charge than to fill up with gas when
- 1:00:35you take other expenses like home charging and fees into account.
- 1:00:38Okay.
- 1:00:39I'm like, okay, sure.
- 1:00:40Maybe.
- 1:00:40I don't know.
- 1:00:41I haven't done the math.
- 1:00:43But then it goes on to say things like EV electric truck costs you the same as
- 1:00:47a gas truck, but that costs you less.
- 1:00:50Than an EV car.
- 1:00:52Wait, what?
- 1:00:53It's cheaper to fill your electric truck than to fill like a mid-size EV car.
- 1:00:59And I'm like, how is that possible?
- 1:01:00Well, electricity's on a flat rate depending on your state,
- 1:01:03so that doesn't make any sense.
- 1:01:04The calculation is miles per range, so miles per kilowatt, hour
- 1:01:10times your dollars per kilowatt hour, it gives you your dollars.
- 1:01:14How much it costs, right?
- 1:01:15They keep using 100 miles as their benchmark.
- 1:01:18That's a fixed number.
- 1:01:20The charge rate's fixed, from what I understand, because if you got a truck
- 1:01:23and a car at your home, I don't think it automatically changes the price.
- 1:01:28So you got two variables fixed.
- 1:01:30The only other variable is that number on the bottom of the
- 1:01:34fraction, which is the range.
- 1:01:36And the pickup truck is less efficient, which means it's going to cost you more.
- 1:01:41How is it cheaper?
- 1:01:42Could be the hour of the day.
- 1:01:43I don't know.
- 1:01:44I don't see where they're saying the pickup truck is cheaper than the cars.
- 1:01:49Because they said a Rivian or GMC is going to cost you about 1, 770 per 100 miles.
- 1:01:55And then they said...
- 1:01:56A Nissan Versa, Hyundai Elantra, or Kia Forte will cost you 978 in gas.
- 1:02:0112.
- 1:02:0155 in home charging for a Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt.
- 1:02:05So that's 5 cheaper.
- 1:02:07Maybe I have misread the article then.
- 1:02:09So to where the prices do increase is if they're doing public charging.
- 1:02:13So public charging skyrockets to 16 for the cars.
- 1:02:18But it still goes up, which then makes me feel slightly better.
- 1:02:21Cause I'm like, that makes no sense.
- 1:02:23It's 26 for the trucks.
- 1:02:25Not, but wait guys, none of that.
- 1:02:27You're right.
- 1:02:27It, it, yeah, I think I know what Eric's going to say.
- 1:02:29None of it makes any sense and none of it matters.
- 1:02:31It doesn't matter.
- 1:02:32The points don't matter.
- 1:02:33Exactly.
- 1:02:34But.
- 1:02:34The thing is a hundred kilowatt battery is a hundred kilowatt battery.
- 1:02:38It doesn't matter if it's in a truck, a boat, or a car, you're
- 1:02:41still charging a hundred kilowatts.
- 1:02:43So the thing about this article to Tanya's point, Well, they're
- 1:02:46not framing it that way that you're filling to the same amount.
- 1:02:49No, they're including registration fees, the cost of the vehicle,
- 1:02:52which I'm like, do you not register?
- 1:02:54You registered either way.
- 1:02:55I'm confused.
- 1:02:56No, but registration fees for trucks are higher.
- 1:03:00The way they break it down, the overall costs are going to be higher.
- 1:03:02That shouldn't play into the economy of driving.
- 1:03:06Is the registration fee of an EV truck higher than or lower than the registration
- 1:03:10of a, is like the F 150 Lightning registration different than an F 150?
- 1:03:15It's about to be in Texas.
- 1:03:18We'll talk about that in a minute.
- 1:03:20I understand what they're trying to do.
- 1:03:22They're trying to say it's okay to keep your gas car.
- 1:03:24You know, you don't need to jump on the EV train, but the way they went
- 1:03:27about trying to do that is just stupid.
- 1:03:30Well, the real piece that they're missing here is what we've said before is if you
- 1:03:34already own a car and you've paid for it.
- 1:03:36To turn around and sell it and buy something more expensive, that delta,
- 1:03:40that break even, that's a lot of gallons of fuel that you need to
- 1:03:45consume cost wise, whatever wise, before you've, quote, broken back
- 1:03:49even for having paid an extra 30, 000 for a vehicle that you're charging.
- 1:03:54That's the piece that's missing here that's more important.
- 1:03:56And what's funny is it's not missing because in our community of
- 1:03:59petrolheads, it's the same discussion we always have, gas versus diesel.
- 1:04:03And the guys, like, let's say, landscapers.
- 1:04:06Why did I buy the V10 gasser versus the diesel?
- 1:04:09There's the diesel tax.
- 1:04:10I'm not going to recoup it.
- 1:04:11I already own the gasser.
- 1:04:13What you just explained is true in that use case as well.
- 1:04:17So the story hasn't changed.
- 1:04:19We've just shifted it now to gas versus EV.
- 1:04:22Something here in the numbers doesn't add up.
- 1:04:24And I don't wanna waste too many more brain cycles on
- 1:04:26this trying to figure it out.
- 1:04:28No, I'm not gonna, the reality of the situation is nobody's gonna
- 1:04:32partially charge, just like nobody puts in three gallons of gas.
- 1:04:35Or maybe they do.
- 1:04:37Depends on where you live.
- 1:04:38I've seen, I've ridden with people that, yeah, give gimme five 50, gimme five 50
- 1:04:44on pump number one, but you get my point.
- 1:04:46100 kilowatt batteries, 100 kilowatt batteries, 100 kilowatt battery.
- 1:04:50It doesn't matter what it's in.
- 1:04:51Right.
- 1:04:51And that's really the moral of the story.
- 1:04:53And that's why this is some fuzzy math.
- 1:04:55And maybe we'll revisit it in the future.
- 1:04:57After we've done some advanced calculus, they need to give us more information.
- 1:05:02If they're going to make these claims a hundred percent, I need to see the math.
- 1:05:05I need to see this Excel spreadsheets that they've done all this shit on.
- 1:05:09Back during what we do, I think it was 2009, 2010, somewhere around
- 1:05:14there, after the mortgage collapse, the government had that cash for
- 1:05:17clunkers deal where everybody had to trade in their old cookies.
- 1:05:21They'd get a couple thousand dollars per car or whatever to
- 1:05:23put down towards a brand new car.
- 1:05:25When do you think it's going to get to the point where the government does that?
- 1:05:28Again, you trade in your ice car for it's not going to happen because as
- 1:05:33you know, and you report every month, we're going to do this here in a minute.
- 1:05:36The used car market is through the roof.
- 1:05:39Why would you trade a car in as a clunker to end up at concourse the lemons when
- 1:05:44you can sell that car on the used market?
- 1:05:46Maybe as a result, it's a butterfly effect of the cash for clunkers because
- 1:05:50a lot of cars did get destroyed, but the value of used cars is through the roof.
- 1:05:54That would be a bad financial move.
- 1:05:56We know the government doesn't make bad financial moves.
- 1:05:58No, never, ever.
- 1:05:59The wheels on the EV go round and round, round.
- 1:06:03Do they?
- 1:06:03Or do they go differently than a gas one?
- 1:06:05When we compare them now, they spin differently.
- 1:06:08Well, it depends on how much you paid for the wheels and the registration fees
- 1:06:11and what kind of tires you're using.
- 1:06:12And are you using these on a private road or a public road?
- 1:06:16Was it concrete or asphalt?
- 1:06:17Depending on what county you're driving in.
- 1:06:19Not all wheels are created equal.
- 1:06:22And we're going to try to highlight wheels.
- 1:06:24I think we're going to start maybe doing a wheels Wednesday.
- 1:06:26I took so many pictures of.
- 1:06:27Wheels that were unique and Monterey we've partnered with a new sponsor,
- 1:06:32ESE carbon wheels out of Georgia, the only manufacturer of one piece carbon
- 1:06:39wheels, especially in the United States.
- 1:06:41And they've got a couple of models.
- 1:06:42They've got a new one coming out for 2024.
- 1:06:44We've been working with them, you know, trying to help them out
- 1:06:47and get these wheels out there.
- 1:06:48They actually started with the idea of putting them on Tesla's
- 1:06:53to decrease the rotating mass.
- 1:06:55To increase the braking efficiency, the wheels clock in even at 20 inches.
- 1:07:00And they're like 20 by nine, 20 by 10, 20 by 11, and those
- 1:07:03sizes at less than 17 pounds.
- 1:07:06There's a race wheels that are heavier than that.
- 1:07:08Carbon is all the rage.
- 1:07:10If you want to learn more about the one piece made the USA wheels
- 1:07:13at ESC carbon, check out www.
- 1:07:15esccarbon.
- 1:07:17com.
- 1:07:17And since we're talking about wheels, I saw a lot of carbon wheels.
- 1:07:20There's a manufacturer that has been around for quite a while called Dynamag.
- 1:07:23And they've partnered with Hyundai to start making two piece carbon wheels
- 1:07:28for the new N line cars that are coming out in the later part of 23 and 24.
- 1:07:34They look cool.
- 1:07:34They're interesting to see Hyundai going down that route.
- 1:07:37You've seen carbon wheels on Porsches and stuff like that in the past.
- 1:07:40And then if that wasn't enough.
- 1:07:42Koenigsegg came out with a carbon wheel, which is a single lug center lock that's
- 1:07:47capable of doing 280 miles an hour.
- 1:07:50So lots of things changing in the wheel world.
- 1:07:54If you think about carbon fiber, technically more environmentally
- 1:07:57friendly than forging wheels, mining for metal, everything that goes into
- 1:08:01creating a steel wheel, aluminum wheel, forged wheel, et cetera.
- 1:08:05How do they ride?
- 1:08:06According to the impact tests and everything else I've read and what
- 1:08:09I've been talking to the guys at ESC carbon, they ride like any other wheel.
- 1:08:14Supposedly the steering feels a little bit lighter.
- 1:08:16The car kind of feels more agile because again, there's less rotating mass.
- 1:08:19If you've ever driven on like an N key or a Volk or any of the Japanese wheels
- 1:08:23that are super light aluminum, you kind of the same sensation, but overall
- 1:08:28it's supposed to solicit better braking numbers, better MPG, stuff like that.
- 1:08:32They are not cheap, that's for sure, but they are quite
- 1:08:35stylish and no, it's not a wrap.
- 1:08:37Well, Brad, it's time for your favorite section, Lost and Found.
- 1:08:41What you got for us?
- 1:08:42I have news.
- 1:08:44What kind of news?
- 1:08:45What's his name?
- 1:08:45Sell his car?
- 1:08:46You find a Dodge Dart?
- 1:08:47That's 1988.
- 1:08:50Cadillac DeVille is gone.
- 1:08:52No, can we take credit for that?
- 1:08:54We helped them sell that.
- 1:08:56Maybe they turned it into cash for clunkers.
- 1:08:58I don't know.
- 1:08:59Maybe there's an expiration date on how long you can leave
- 1:09:02something listed on cars.
- 1:09:03com.
- 1:09:04It's gone.
- 1:09:04It's gone.
- 1:09:05It's gone.
- 1:09:06However, to replace it, a 2003 Toyota Tundra SR5, it is being sold
- 1:09:12for the low, low price of 42, 000.
- 1:09:17What?
- 1:09:18That's insane.
- 1:09:19Eric, the guy I bought the R32 from, he's got a 1982 Vanagon for sale.
- 1:09:251, 800.
- 1:09:27That's a good deal.
- 1:09:28If it runs.
- 1:09:28If it runs.
- 1:09:29Uh, ran one part.
- 1:09:32Oh, okay.
- 1:09:32All right.
- 1:09:33Well, there's some other things we need to talk about cars that
- 1:09:37are on their way out, right?
- 1:09:38Yes have been discontinued at this point.
- 1:09:41Let's talk about that motor trend put out a list of 30 cool cars that
- 1:09:45are Discontinued in the past decade because when they do this every
- 1:09:49single year, nobody reads it slow news day So they have to put together
- 1:09:53a decades long list Of cars that we already know don't exist anymore.
- 1:09:58I feel like we already talked about this.
- 1:09:59We talk about it every year.
- 1:10:00And they're not that great.
- 1:10:02They say cool cars.
- 1:10:03I'm like Acura ZDX?
- 1:10:05Really?
- 1:10:05I would have bought an Acura ZDX over a BMW X6.
- 1:10:09I hate to say the ZDX out of all these is not discontinued because...
- 1:10:13They just revealed it at Pebble.
- 1:10:14They're bringing it back.
- 1:10:16Just like the Camaro was discontinued in 2002 and then brought back in 2005.
- 1:10:19They have the Cadillac CTS V on this list.
- 1:10:22The Cadillac CTS V still exists.
- 1:10:23It's the CT5 V.
- 1:10:25It's the same car, different badge.
- 1:10:27And then the Aston Martin V12 Vantage.
- 1:10:29Yeah.
- 1:10:30Some of these, I'm not sad about like the Avalanche, uh, the Viper
- 1:10:34does hit a soft spot though.
- 1:10:35You know, the Ferrari that's on here.
- 1:10:37You knew they were going to build three of those.
- 1:10:39The Ford flex.
- 1:10:40Yes.
- 1:10:41I think that disappoints a lot of people to include Don from garage style.
- 1:10:44He's owned several over the years.
- 1:10:45He has one now.
- 1:10:46Why is he needed to own so many of executive a vehicle trading up because
- 1:10:50there's new models of the flex came out.
- 1:10:53You got better options.
- 1:10:54Who cares?
- 1:10:54People care about that stuff.
- 1:10:56To Tanya's point, people are just going to trade in their vehicles, you
- 1:10:59know, for something else, they're going to spend thousands of dollars, lose
- 1:11:02thousands of dollars in depreciation or for a upgraded stereo system.
- 1:11:07That they could put in themselves for a couple hundred bucks.
- 1:11:09This list is interesting.
- 1:11:10RX 8s, Mazdaspeed 3, I'm not going to miss the Benz R Class, but even the SLS AMG
- 1:11:17that was replaced by the new GT3 and GTR.
- 1:11:20Yeah.
- 1:11:21I mean, the, the list is from 2011 to 2020, so we've already missed these cars.
- 1:11:27I mean, come on.
- 1:11:28This is breaking news, Brad.
- 1:11:30Breaking news.
- 1:11:31Breaking news.
- 1:11:31When was this article written?
- 1:11:32Was this, this article was written years ago.
- 1:11:35I don't know why it's in here.
- 1:11:37Hey, what the hell kind of bullshit is this?
- 1:11:39Eric, what are you doing?
- 1:11:40That's why it's lost and found.
- 1:11:41You're fired.
- 1:11:42We didn't know this existed.
- 1:11:44This article was lost and Eric found it one day.
- 1:11:48Well, it's that time again.
- 1:11:50Lowered expectations.
- 1:11:51No, no, no.
- 1:11:54One in the same sometimes.
- 1:11:55Yeah, that's very true.
- 1:11:57Folks, it's Tez Lucky time.
- 1:12:00Dun, dun, dun.
- 1:12:01Dun, dun.
- 1:12:04Well, we would be remiss.
- 1:12:05We hinted earlier about the cost of your EV being higher in Texas.
- 1:12:10Apparently under a new state law, Texas will bill electric vehicle
- 1:12:15drivers an extra 200 a year.
- 1:12:17They're saying they're doing this because that is the estimated
- 1:12:21lost revenue due to fewer gasoline vehicles on the road paying the taxes.
- 1:12:28Even though I think it's like less than half a percent of EVs in all of Texas,
- 1:12:34total car market, but nonetheless, you now have these extra registration fees.
- 1:12:38See, see, these registration fees, they're adding up extra 200 a year because they
- 1:12:43do registration yearly in that state.
- 1:12:46And as gasoline taxes are supposed to go to maintenance of the roads
- 1:12:50and construction, I guess on the one hand I can see the argument.
- 1:12:54You suddenly have a car that's not paying towards that?
- 1:12:58What if we were in a world where everybody was an EV?
- 1:13:00Now what?
- 1:13:01Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned that.
- 1:13:02And since you're returning to the DMV, you can verify this for us.
- 1:13:06I had heard, and Brad had mentioned it earlier about SUVs and trucks costing more
- 1:13:11registration wise than passenger vehicles.
- 1:13:13And that had to do with the gross weight of the vehicle and the amount
- 1:13:16of pressure it puts on the roads.
- 1:13:18So it's technically doing more damage to the asphalt.
- 1:13:21And what do EVs do?
- 1:13:22They weigh even more, significantly more.
- 1:13:26But you know what?
- 1:13:26I can't hear all the Texans now, you know, with this law cheering it on, go on.
- 1:13:30This is why we said Californians would be the ruination of our great republic.
- 1:13:35And now we're going to stick it to them.
- 1:13:37So you do have an influx of a lot of people coming from California into Texas,
- 1:13:41kind of changing the latitude there.
- 1:13:43You're seeing the adoption of more EVs and you know, maybe secretly
- 1:13:46they're sticking it to them.
- 1:13:47So fun fact, because I don't need to inquire at the, the lovely motor vehicle
- 1:13:52association for this answer to your point.
- 1:13:54Yes, the registration fees are based on weight.
- 1:13:57So even passenger cars.
- 1:13:59Vehicle registrations are not consistent.
- 1:14:01They have up to weights and above weights and the registration fee changes.
- 1:14:06So yes, three quarter ton, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:14:09Trucks all have different registration fees, which are
- 1:14:11higher than regular passenger cars.
- 1:14:13Well, Brad, you keep trying to give away that Cybertruck allotment for a box of
- 1:14:17tacos, dude, you should just buy an F 150.
- 1:14:20I'm not buying anything.
- 1:14:21I've got a Toyota Tundra that is going to run for 1 million billion miles.
- 1:14:25Will it run for 300, 000?
- 1:14:27It will run for 301.
- 1:14:291000.
- 1:14:30Nice.
- 1:14:30Did you see the side by side comparison of the Ford pickup and the cyber truck?
- 1:14:34What is the significance of this?
- 1:14:36Sorry, I keep looking at the photo.
- 1:14:37I'm like the two 50 is a big one.
- 1:14:39It's not the biggest one, right?
- 1:14:40'cause like the three 50, or is there one above three 50?
- 1:14:42There's a four 50, there's like a 6 50, 5 50.
- 1:14:45There's a, so the two 50 is not the smallest one, but
- 1:14:49it's also not the biggest one.
- 1:14:50So this.
- 1:14:51Cybertruck is pretty much the equivalent size of an F 250.
- 1:14:55That's huge.
- 1:14:56Which is a Super Duty.
- 1:14:57But we knew the Cybertruck was huge, so I guess I'm confused why this is like...
- 1:15:01I think the Cybertruck is supposed to be competing with the half ton pickup trucks,
- 1:15:06and the F 250 is a three quarter ton.
- 1:15:08So it's the size of a three quarter ton truck.
- 1:15:11But it's competition is the smaller, right?
- 1:15:13I see like a ribbing dimensionally.
- 1:15:16They're all, it did the tug of war thing with an F one
- 1:15:1850 back in the bullshit days.
- 1:15:21Right?
- 1:15:21Yes.
- 1:15:22Have we exited the bullshit days?
- 1:15:25No, we're in the middle of those days.
- 1:15:27We're still deep, deep in the trenches.
- 1:15:29So technically that wasn't very fair if it was a three quarter ton truck
- 1:15:33up against, I'm assuming the 150 is not a three quarter ton, right?
- 1:15:37The 150 is a half ton.
- 1:15:38Okay.
- 1:15:39That wasn't very fair.
- 1:15:40Nope.
- 1:15:40Shame on you, Elon Musk.
- 1:15:43It's just like that kickboxing match between him and Zuck.
- 1:15:46Did anyone see the photo that somebody did where they like, I don't know
- 1:15:50if they wrapped their F something.
- 1:15:52They put like a Cybertruck wrap on it.
- 1:15:56And so if you don't pay attention at first you're like, oh look,
- 1:15:59it's a black cyber truck.
- 1:16:00And you're like, wait a second.
- 1:16:02It's, it's, it's a Ford pick.
- 1:16:03It's really funny actually.
- 1:16:05Is it as good as the PLI truck?
- 1:16:07It's professionally done compared to the house.
- 1:16:10. . They probably cost the scene too.
- 1:16:12The wrap in the PLI truck.
- 1:16:13Not the TR wrapped truck.
- 1:16:14In the truck.
- 1:16:15Well, yeah, because the Acura that was under the PLA truck was
- 1:16:17like 50 bucks at a yard sale.
- 1:16:19Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:20. So Tanya, this next one had me go, so they do exist.
- 1:16:23It existed for a while.
- 1:16:25I've never seen one.
- 1:16:26I've never seen one, but I heard the orders went through and
- 1:16:29that they were quote on the road and that they quote broke down.
- 1:16:33And what are we talking about?
- 1:16:34The semi Tesla, somebody else too.
- 1:16:38It wasn't just Pepsi took an order of them, but yeah, they are
- 1:16:42allegedly out and about and we haven't heard much about them.
- 1:16:45I know recently there was an article about one had broken down and was getting towed.
- 1:16:49I don't remember what the issue with it was.
- 1:16:52But I guess we'll start seeing more of them maybe?
- 1:16:55I don't know what I would do if I actually saw one.
- 1:16:57Is this like a Cybertruck F 150 scenario where like it's more
- 1:17:01massive than a regular Mac?
- 1:17:03They carry all the batteries, sure.
- 1:17:05But yes, keep your eyes peeled.
- 1:17:06Hopefully they don't have full self driving capabilities and they beeline
- 1:17:10at you and take you out on the highway.
- 1:17:11This next one had me a little confused.
- 1:17:14If it's good enough for Lego, it's good enough for Tesla?
- 1:17:17O M G.
- 1:17:19So, one of the first Cybertrucks has rolled off or whatever.
- 1:17:24The candidate Cybertruck, meaning like, this is the one we're going
- 1:17:27to like quality inspect or whatever.
- 1:17:29And then there's some sort of shared email that's been leaked from Elon.
- 1:17:34It says, due to the nature of Cybertruck, which is made of bright metal with
- 1:17:37mostly straight edges, Any dimensional variation shows up like a sore thumb.
- 1:17:42All parts for this vehicle, whether internal or from suppliers,
- 1:17:45need to be designed and built to sub 10 micron accuracy.
- 1:17:49That means all part dimensions need to be to the third decimal place in
- 1:17:53millimeters and tolerances need to be specified in single digit microns.
- 1:17:57If Lego and soda cans which are very low cost, can do this, so can we.
- 1:18:02Precision predicates perfectionism.
- 1:18:04Elon.
- 1:18:05That's a very well worded email.
- 1:18:07It's a very big worded email.
- 1:18:08I would like to drop some knowledge nuggets, okay?
- 1:18:11How thick do you think a sheet of paper is?
- 1:18:15I would say a sheet of paper is maybe an eighth of a mil.
- 1:18:17So a sheet of paper, according to the Googles, in microns.
- 1:18:21Let's recall what he just said, single digits.
- 1:18:24So less than 10 microns.
- 1:18:26accuracy and precision of all these metal panels.
- 1:18:30A sheet of paper is 102 microns thick.
- 1:18:34So he's going to have precision better than a sheet of paper on
- 1:18:39really long stretches of metal.
- 1:18:41It's one thing for Lego to do it on an inch brick.
- 1:18:46It's another thing to do it on a 10 foot long panel of stainless
- 1:18:49steel on the side of this thing.
- 1:18:50Lego's also been doing it for how long?
- 1:18:52Yeah, Brad, to your point, Lego's been doing it for like 80 years.
- 1:18:56Yeah, I guarantee you like the first 10 years of Legos were
- 1:18:59like a just a complete cluster.
- 1:19:00100 percent.
- 1:19:01How much money is it going to cost to have like The equipment to precisely
- 1:19:07have those tolerances with the tooling.
- 1:19:09I can tell you exactly how much it's going to cost.
- 1:19:11It's going to cost nothing because this truck is never going to be made.
- 1:19:14It's never coming out.
- 1:19:16It's not going to cost anybody anything.
- 1:19:18And to that point, they have not released specs or updated prices.
- 1:19:22So there's no information on anything.
- 1:19:24Not surprised.
- 1:19:25The candidate version, I still want to know if it has mirrors and
- 1:19:27windshield wipers and all those things.
- 1:19:29It does based on the photos they show.
- 1:19:31But the question becomes.
- 1:19:32What's the level of precision at SpaceX?
- 1:19:35If the Cybertruck is anything like that, it will burn up on re entry, right?
- 1:19:40On re entry, they often burn up just trying to exit.
- 1:19:43What about the panel gap?
- 1:19:45That's the panel gap.
- 1:19:46They need to be less than 10 microns.
- 1:19:48So that panel gap is dead accurate.
- 1:19:51And how much is that going to cost to repair when somebody
- 1:19:54inevitably gets an offender bender?
- 1:19:56I was thinking, so how much did that guy pay?
- 1:19:58To have his Rivian repaired after it was rear ended.
- 1:20:02A body shop doesn't have equipment that's gonna measure precision less
- 1:20:06than 10 microns of panel alignment.
- 1:20:08No, and Joe Bob down at the collision center, when he gets the Tesla parts come
- 1:20:12in, he's gonna hit them into place with a mallet to get them to fit together.
- 1:20:16To give him a little bit of credit, I understand what
- 1:20:18he's saying because it's true.
- 1:20:20The stainless.
- 1:20:21Yes.
- 1:20:22It shows everything.
- 1:20:23It's awful in that respect.
- 1:20:24Yes, I don't disagree.
- 1:20:25He's correct in seeing what all the rest of us realize.
- 1:20:28And have been seeing, yes.
- 1:20:29But he could do something a little bit more daring.
- 1:20:32He could paint it.
- 1:20:33Oh my god, paint?
- 1:20:36Never, never.
- 1:20:36My point is, he could borrow from the Italians and the British.
- 1:20:41And what I mean is, Lamborghini and Lotus.
- 1:20:43in the sense that he could make parts of the Cybertruck clamshells where they're
- 1:20:48all one contiguous piece and they open differently to gain access to those parts.
- 1:20:54On an EV, what are you gaining access to other than getting
- 1:20:57in and out of the thing?
- 1:20:58Not a whole heck of a lot.
- 1:20:59Didn't the man who's already done this before say that it's really difficult
- 1:21:03to get entire sheets of stainless?
- 1:21:06Yes.
- 1:21:07Form them.
- 1:21:07Mr.
- 1:21:07DeLorean.
- 1:21:08Correct.
- 1:21:09And we had Tony Vallelunga on the show who actually formed those stainless
- 1:21:13pieces and talked about the presses and the process of doing that.
- 1:21:17Just making those goldwing doors was extremely difficult.
- 1:21:20And so the Cybertruck stainless works for a sink.
- 1:21:24I've said that before because you can press it out and there it is.
- 1:21:27And all it needs to be is a sink that takes your dirty
- 1:21:30water out to the sewer system.
- 1:21:32I'm wondering how bad is the alignment?
- 1:21:35You got to be up close and personal with the DeLorean.
- 1:21:38Are there huge, noticeably offensive gaps and distortions of
- 1:21:44panels and lining up of things?
- 1:21:46I'll answer it this way.
- 1:21:47No, because it's built like a real car.
- 1:21:50Meaning it has a quarter inch between the door and let's say the fender or
- 1:21:56the rear quarter, you know, whatever it is, or there's that gap around the lift.
- 1:22:00back.
- 1:22:00There's seals there in place that are supposed to keep the water from coming in.
- 1:22:04Like any other car has those gaps between the hood and the fender.
- 1:22:08The DeLorean is no different.
- 1:22:09It also has simpler geometry.
- 1:22:11It has less sharp angles or simpler angles.
- 1:22:14Correct.
- 1:22:15Simple angles.
- 1:22:16But it does show everything.
- 1:22:18And part of the awesomeness of the stainless, just like having
- 1:22:21a stainless countertop or having a stainless stove or whatever, is
- 1:22:25those swirls and those striations.
- 1:22:28And I wanted to ask a refrigerator or like a dishwasher stainless,
- 1:22:32like appliances in your kitchen and they get like a water spot on 'em.
- 1:22:35Yep.
- 1:22:36Or after a while.
- 1:22:36And they look like hot ass.
- 1:22:38Does the DeLorean look like that?
- 1:22:40Or did they coat it in something better than like your refrigerator?
- 1:22:43It is better, but it's not clear coated.
- 1:22:46It's still metal.
- 1:22:47And so if you talk to Don, he actually wrote an article about
- 1:22:50doing car care on the stainless.
- 1:22:52It's a lot more complicated a process, but it comes out.
- 1:22:55You can use stainless polishes, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:22:58Just like you would do in your kitchen, on your stove or your refrigerator.
- 1:23:00Those striations, those marks, those imperfections in the stainless
- 1:23:04actually give the stainless character, because if it was completely smooth.
- 1:23:07It would end up looking like chrome and it would look terrible the way it
- 1:23:11changes the light when you look at it.
- 1:23:13And even sometimes one panel looks slightly discolored compared to the
- 1:23:18other, which is also the effect of anybody that has like a mystique paint
- 1:23:21job or like my BMW, where depending on the light, one panel of purple and
- 1:23:26the other one looked blue and you were like, not sure if the car was repainted,
- 1:23:29the stainless is sort of the same way.
- 1:23:31What it doesn't do is it doesn't blind you the way they have that stainless DeLorean,
- 1:23:37where it does have that kind of swirl in it and whatnot, or the or the lines
- 1:23:40in it, it doesn't have a ton of glare.
- 1:23:43So you can look at it in broad daylight or at night, and it still just looks
- 1:23:46the way it does, which is hilarious.
- 1:23:48Because if you look at the photo in the article, there's glare coming off
- 1:23:52the side of This thing, like I need my sunglasses just to look at this photo.
- 1:23:58Well, we have to wrap out our Tesla gate.
- 1:24:00We would be remiss section with even more Tesla gate because it continues.
- 1:24:06Tesla is now faced with a lawsuit for over exaggerating the
- 1:24:10driving range of their vehicles.
- 1:24:12That is fascinating.
- 1:24:13Kind of like diesel gate.
- 1:24:15This really is a Tesla gate type of situation.
- 1:24:17The way that Tesla's calculate their range using very simple math and not
- 1:24:22actually taking into account load and all this other stuff and driving conditions.
- 1:24:26And it's sort of like you drove two miles, you use this amount of electricity.
- 1:24:30So it's always consistent.
- 1:24:31It's a theoretical calculation that has no basis in actual.
- 1:24:35Exactly.
- 1:24:35Now the question I have is theoretical calculation or otherwise,
- 1:24:40who got paid off at the EPA?
- 1:24:42Because they post these numbers and EPA certified X amount of kilowatt
- 1:24:46hours per mile, blah, blah, blah, just like they do with a gas car.
- 1:24:49Who signed off on this?
- 1:24:51Or maybe, just like Dieselgate, it went out there and nobody knew until somebody
- 1:24:55sat down and figured it out and understood the math that's being calculated.
- 1:24:59I don't know.
- 1:24:59I guess we'll learn more as I think this is, you know, fresh and still developing.
- 1:25:04If Tesla gets away with this, Was Volkswagen falsely sort of
- 1:25:10persecuted because of Dieselgate.
- 1:25:11If Tesla doesn't take on the same sort of, let's say, punishment or
- 1:25:15have to pay back the same kind of reparations, what have we just done?
- 1:25:19What have we created here?
- 1:25:20We favor one versus the other because it was diesel versus EV or whatever.
- 1:25:24To me, these are very similar situations where they falsified that
- 1:25:28information, but it, it's different because Dieselgate was more of like
- 1:25:32an environmental concern of releasing.
- 1:25:35Higher than approved of gases, I'm glad you brought that up because
- 1:25:40here's the problem with this math.
- 1:25:42The way I look at it, you're falsifying the way you consume electricity,
- 1:25:46which means you're pulling more, which means you're putting more load
- 1:25:49on the grid, which means that the power stations are running more.
- 1:25:52So you're actually not as efficient as you said you were.
- 1:25:55Which is now a detriment to the environment in a similar,
- 1:25:58but not exactly the same way as diesel was to the environment.
- 1:26:01So if you kind of stretch this out and think about it from a lawyer's
- 1:26:04perspective, there's a lot of other moving parts that could be brought
- 1:26:07into this conversation about how they're cheating and gaming the system.
- 1:26:11And there's an environmental impact.
- 1:26:13Because these Teslas are not as efficient as they say they are.
- 1:26:16Maybe I'm wrong.
- 1:26:17Hit us up in the comments.
- 1:26:18If you have a different opinion or different math, but you know, the more I
- 1:26:21think about this, it's not too different.
- 1:26:23I don't know what to say.
- 1:26:24Cause this is, it'll be interesting what comes out of
- 1:26:26the investigative work, right?
- 1:26:27Because this are consumers, I think that have brought this up and are complaining
- 1:26:32that they've seen less mileage.
- 1:26:33Well, are you, how are you like, how do you validate that?
- 1:26:36Cause if you're driving like a.
- 1:26:38Asshat or something.
- 1:26:39And you're constantly, I didn't get my range while you had your
- 1:26:43foot to the floor, constantly doing burnouts everywhere.
- 1:26:46Of course you didn't achieve your range.
- 1:26:47Like it's going to be interesting to see how they revalidate this.
- 1:26:51Now that our expectations have been thoroughly lowered, Brad can sing for us.
- 1:26:55Lowered expectations.
- 1:27:01This next one is complete buffoonery.
- 1:27:04Was this Andrew Bank?
- 1:27:05I mean, come on, we've all tried it at least once or know somebody that has.
- 1:27:09I'm going to paint my brake calipers because I want them to
- 1:27:11look like the Brembo big red.
- 1:27:14So you get out the spray paint and you go to town and if you got a couple extra
- 1:27:18bucks, maybe you take your calipers off.
- 1:27:20You have somebody powder coat them and then they're permanently red.
- 1:27:23But this.
- 1:27:24Fellow car enthusiasts decided, you know what?
- 1:27:27Let's just spray paint the whole damn thing.
- 1:27:29Rotors and all!
- 1:27:30But if you look at it, he, like, sprayed it through the wheel.
- 1:27:33He didn't even take the wheel off.
- 1:27:34If you spin the wheel and spray, it's, you get it in there, man.
- 1:27:38Get that pinwheel effect.
- 1:27:40It also blows the spray can fumes back into your face so you can get high on them
- 1:27:45while you're painting your brake rotors.
- 1:27:46Maybe that's why this happened.
- 1:27:47You know, they take it into the shop and they're like, It won't stop.
- 1:27:50I wonder why.
- 1:27:53Unbelievable.
- 1:27:53So public service announcement.
- 1:27:55Don't spray your brakes with anything, but break clean when you're servicing them.
- 1:28:00How about that quick update for you guys?
- 1:28:02Last time we talked about Tex Mex motors and Downey's dream cars.
- 1:28:05I actually finished both of them.
- 1:28:07I had some extra time to do so.
- 1:28:09Yeah.
- 1:28:10Tex Mex motors.
- 1:28:11Really interesting.
- 1:28:12I am looking forward to season two.
- 1:28:14They're hinting at.
- 1:28:15Potential Ferrari build upgrade and trade six figure car at the end of the whole
- 1:28:19show actually turned out to be a nine 11 that they converted from basically
- 1:28:23a club race car back into a street car.
- 1:28:26They ended up selling it for upwards of 160, 000.
- 1:28:30So they met their goal after doing all the upgrades and
- 1:28:33trades and selling and buying.
- 1:28:34And in season two, they hinted at going after a Ferrari Daytona that they have
- 1:28:38to go deeper into Mexico to go get, and then they're going to try to restore that.
- 1:28:42So really curious to see where the show goes from there.
- 1:28:44By the end, I was invested.
- 1:28:47I was engaged.
- 1:28:48I thought it was a lot of fun.
- 1:28:49I liked the fact that they weren't just doing hot rods.
- 1:28:52Just like when they started with that Opal GT, ending with the 911.
- 1:28:56There were some really interesting rides in between.
- 1:28:58So they kept it fresh.
- 1:28:59They kept it interesting.
- 1:29:01Lots of builds that you don't expect to see on other shows.
- 1:29:04I feel like this is a change of opinion.
- 1:29:06I feel like the initial opinion from the first episode was
- 1:29:08much more negative than this.
- 1:29:09It was, and that's why I wanted to come back to it and say, look, I
- 1:29:13went all the way through, I gave it a chance, and I've come around on it.
- 1:29:17Now, does it have the same charisma that Let's say the guys from Gotham
- 1:29:22garage have on rust to riches.
- 1:29:23No, a same show, but different show.
- 1:29:26But by the end of the eight or 10 episodes that Texan X motors was, I was on board.
- 1:29:31They do good work, interesting stuff, interesting paint jobs, nothing over
- 1:29:35the top, no spider webs and Halloween stuff or anything like that, just nice,
- 1:29:39clean builds, somewhat decent prices.
- 1:29:41If you look at how they sold the cars.
- 1:29:43Meanwhile, I flipped over to Downey's Dream Cars on HBO because it was
- 1:29:47recommended, so I finished watching that.
- 1:29:49That's like six episodes, if I remember correctly.
- 1:29:51I was into it until the Corvette, and I say that because I think a little bit of
- 1:29:57all of us as classic car enthusiasts and petrolheads and motorsports enthusiasts
- 1:30:02all sort of died that day because he took a pristine, numbers matching, C2
- 1:30:08Corvette convertible and just stripped it down and turned it into an EV.
- 1:30:12It was like, you know, you could have picked up any other C2
- 1:30:15Corvette for let's say less money.
- 1:30:18I get that this one was in your collection, but I would have sold
- 1:30:20that Corvette to somebody that wanted a numbers matching original
- 1:30:24car and turned it into an EV.
- 1:30:25Cause I mean, they stripped it all the way down.
- 1:30:27They took the interior out of it and replaced it with a mushroom.
- 1:30:30Leather based interior that it's like artificially grown, which
- 1:30:33was an interesting concept.
- 1:30:34I was fascinated by the way they did the build, but just that episode
- 1:30:39sat sideways with me because I would have picked something else.
- 1:30:42I will say I wasn't a big fan of the paint schemes that Robert
- 1:30:46chose for a lot of the cars.
- 1:30:48But at the very end, it did turn around.
- 1:30:51They did a really nice Samba build with a T2 bus.
- 1:30:56And they turned it into an EV.
- 1:30:57Now, they didn't use Rich Benoit and his team from Electrified Garage.
- 1:31:01They did the bolt in kit from EV West because it was easier.
- 1:31:04They didn't have to fabricate, just drop it in.
- 1:31:06Those have been done a million times.
- 1:31:08They turned it into this surfing design, family hauler type of very retro
- 1:31:13California beach boys type of look.
- 1:31:15I very much enjoyed the way they rehabbed.
- 1:31:18That type two bus.
- 1:31:19So at least we left on a high note, I don't see the show
- 1:31:22continuing for a second season.
- 1:31:24It's already transferred from one service to another because it was
- 1:31:27originally on discovery plus, and then moved to HBO max or I guess max.
- 1:31:31Now it's called again.
- 1:31:33I went through it.
- 1:31:34It was worth watching.
- 1:31:35There was some interesting discussion in there, but that Corvette episode
- 1:31:38just sort of killed me a little bit.
- 1:31:39And I'm sure it did for other people.
- 1:31:41If you watched it or are going to watch it.
- 1:31:43Now this next one, Brad, this is your favorite car.
- 1:31:45Is it now?
- 1:31:46Isn't that the car you just lust after?
- 1:31:48Yes.
- 1:31:49Large chested women and all.
- 1:31:52This car is a large chested woman.
- 1:31:54I don't understand this.
- 1:31:56And for the listeners out there, this is a Fiero.
- 1:31:59That has been swapped to have the motor in the front.
- 1:32:02And in doing so, they had to lose power steering, apparently.
- 1:32:05Yep, I can tell by the guy playing with the steering wheel.
- 1:32:08He's got the underhand.
- 1:32:09Oh my god, I actually, I've seen this guy before.
- 1:32:12He was at the gas station in his early 2000s Dodge Ram, blasting Marilyn
- 1:32:17Manson when I was there the other day.
- 1:32:20Same guy, looks just like him.
- 1:32:21I want to know how he sees.
- 1:32:23I know he can't turn fast because no power steering, But how do you
- 1:32:26see, not just past the A pillar, But three quarters of the engine,
- 1:32:30the motor pillar, the end pillar.
- 1:32:32That's why you have a passenger, a co pilot to tell you what's going
- 1:32:35on, on the right side of the car.
- 1:32:36So riddle me this Batman, the transmission tunnel is where exactly?
- 1:32:40It's probably front wheel drive.
- 1:32:44Yeah, right.
- 1:32:45No, not with those rear wheels.
- 1:32:46No, it's definitely not front wheel drive.
- 1:32:47Oh my goodness.
- 1:32:48That has to be the most uncomfortable car on the planet to drive.
- 1:32:51It's not even worthy of our uncool wall because it's just so out there.
- 1:32:56And then you sit back and say.
- 1:32:58Hold my beer.
- 1:32:58I got an idea.
- 1:32:59Let's spend some money and time building a front mounted Fiero.
- 1:33:04I don't get it.
- 1:33:05So in our final lowered expectation, this goes back over to California
- 1:33:09where you were recently, but I don't think you had any opportunity to see
- 1:33:13any of these vehicles because they're limited to the San Francisco area, I
- 1:33:16believe, which is not where you were.
- 1:33:18However, the fleet of Robo taxis that they've got going around
- 1:33:23in not necessarily test mode.
- 1:33:25They're actually actively being used as robo taxis, but it's definitely a
- 1:33:30significant rollout of the technology.
- 1:33:32The cruise owned by Google or something as who owns actually owns it as
- 1:33:37the parent company, but the cruise fleet of self driving robo taxis.
- 1:33:41Has hit a bit of a hiccup.
- 1:33:43They've been asked pending investigations from the Department of Motor Vehicles over
- 1:33:48there to reduce their fleet by about 50 percent because of some recent incidents,
- 1:33:53which it's like, all right, it's the programming of the technology's fault.
- 1:33:58Not necessarily the robo taxi's fault, because the first situation
- 1:34:02is the robo taxi's fault, for sure, because a human driver.
- 1:34:05I'm actually not 100 percent sure that they would have
- 1:34:08been paying attention either.
- 1:34:09It proceeded through its intersection on a green light.
- 1:34:11However, it did not audibly sense the firetruck sirens until the firetruck
- 1:34:18was close enough that it filtered the other noises out, and it didn't see it.
- 1:34:23It perceived it as a threat when it was too late and did try to do evasive
- 1:34:26maneuvering, but it was too late at that point and the firetruck t boned the robo
- 1:34:30taxi, which did have a passenger in the vehicle and they got a little bit hurt.
- 1:34:34But there was also a similar incident where again it was proceeding through
- 1:34:37its green light intersection and somebody else was running red light.
- 1:34:41And again, it got T boned by somebody else.
- 1:34:44Well, it's a good thing emergency services were already on scene.
- 1:34:48Well, there's a couple of things that I like about this.
- 1:34:50First of all, this Chevy cruise, Google cruise, whatever has evasive maneuvers.
- 1:34:56Well, I've used those words like the starship defiant or something, right?
- 1:35:00I'm like, that's cool.
- 1:35:01Activate shields, activate shields.
- 1:35:04It needs that apparently.
- 1:35:05Cause it's getting hunted down at intersections.
- 1:35:08Well, I mean, if you look at all the gear on the roof, it looks like it's got a
- 1:35:10deflector disc and photon torpedoes and everything else attached to this thing.
- 1:35:15But I want to talk to somebody that's gone for a ride in one of these
- 1:35:20Johnny cabs, because I think it will be not a discussion about cars.
- 1:35:24But about psychology and my number one question is, why did you
- 1:35:29think this was a good idea to get in a car with nobody driving it?
- 1:35:33That's a level of risk.
- 1:35:34I guess somebody's got to do it.
- 1:35:36But again, here we are.
- 1:35:37Two people are in these accidents.
- 1:35:39And now, now what?
- 1:35:41The second one was actually a day poor little thing.
- 1:35:44And even better.
- 1:35:46Again, clobbered by somebody.
- 1:35:47This time it was somebody running a red light.
- 1:35:49It happens, right?
- 1:35:51But it didn't have time to properly react, which is also what happens
- 1:35:55with human drivers behind the wheel.
- 1:35:56Sometimes you're effed.
- 1:35:58Depending on, like, I don't know, the road structure building could
- 1:36:01have been blocking, there could have been something else in the way,
- 1:36:03the camera couldn't see, sometimes the human eye doesn't see either.
- 1:36:06Not trying to completely defend, but that's unfortunate.
- 1:36:09It could be a step back.
- 1:36:10Hopefully they can.
- 1:36:11Can take the learnings and improve the programming and the auditory
- 1:36:15sensors and the cameras and all that this technology, in my opinion, we
- 1:36:19need to trickle down to people like Tesla that are claiming their vehicles
- 1:36:23can just self drive themselves too.
- 1:36:25So what happens in the same instance, if this was a Tesla crossing that
- 1:36:27intersection and a fire truck was coming, we already know when it sees the emergency
- 1:36:31lights, it just drives into the object.
- 1:36:33So if I didn't like turn and headed on onto a fire truck, I don't know.
- 1:36:39Well, time will tell if the Johnny Cab will become a real thing or not.
- 1:36:43But you know what else?
- 1:36:44Time has passed by for a section of the drive thru that we
- 1:36:47haven't talked about in a while.
- 1:36:48It's one of Tanya's favorites.
- 1:36:50What is that?
- 1:36:51Rich people thangs.
- 1:36:52Oh, we got some rich people thangs.
- 1:36:54So get this.
- 1:36:55I'm going to summarize this for you.
- 1:36:56Aston Martin Valkyrie owners.
- 1:36:59at their scheduled and appointed 10, 000 mile service are faced with a hefty bill.
- 1:37:04Would you guys like to guess how much it costs for the first service
- 1:37:07on your Aston Martin Dockery?
- 1:37:09It's over the course of the first 10, 000 miles, not the very first service.
- 1:37:14So it's all the services over the first 10, 000 miles.
- 1:37:16Potato, potato, tomato, tomato, either way, there's a massive amount of money
- 1:37:21on the line here within the first 10, 000 miles of owning this car.
- 1:37:24How much does this car cost?
- 1:37:26Million.
- 1:37:26Three million.
- 1:37:27Millions.
- 1:37:28$3 million.
- 1:37:30Yep.
- 1:37:30Yes.
- 1:37:30So the service cost at the 10,000 mile mark is a low,
- 1:37:34low bargain price of $464,000.
- 1:37:38And how many miles do you pay?
- 1:37:40This car, this car is gonna quickly cost you more than which paid for it.
- 1:37:46And you won't have to put any miles on this thing.
- 1:37:48Keep in mind, I think it's only, I don't know if it's street legal.
- 1:37:52The original Valkyrie that came out was not street legal.
- 1:37:54I guess this is different, but.
- 1:37:56I'm going to use their words from the article, because it's something
- 1:37:59that you touched on earlier, Tanya.
- 1:38:01Customers of such cars are familiar with such expensive maintenance.
- 1:38:06Anyway, Valkyrie owners are also likely Bugatti Chiron and Koenigsegg owners.
- 1:38:11So they're used to the frequent high dollar maintenance and likely won't
- 1:38:15bat an eye at the service schedule.
- 1:38:17You can afford 3 million for some hyper car.
- 1:38:20That's completely practical, right?
- 1:38:22It's not your daily driver or anything.
- 1:38:24Then you probably can afford almost half a million dollars of maintenance.
- 1:38:28Well, that's why it's rich people fangs.
- 1:38:31Speaking of other rich people, thanks.
- 1:38:32You remember that weird looking Cadillac that we talked
- 1:38:35about like almost a year ago?
- 1:38:37The Celestique.
- 1:38:38We kind of made fun of its design because we weren't sure if it was
- 1:38:42coming or going, if it was a 928 or if it was a wagon or if it was a sedan.
- 1:38:47It's definitely an EV.
- 1:38:48I've never seen one on the street.
- 1:38:49You never will either.
- 1:38:51I don't think we ever will.
- 1:38:52Yeah, they've released what it's gonna cost.
- 1:38:55Jesus, Louise.
- 1:38:56Right?
- 1:38:57Well, it doesn't quite cost the maintenance of the other one.
- 1:38:59For the low, low bargain rich people thang price of 340, 000,
- 1:39:06you can have a Cadillac Celestique.
- 1:39:08That's hand built in Michigan with a plaque on the door stating such.
- 1:39:12By a guy named Steve who has a DeWalt tool belt and a hammer in it.
- 1:39:16I'm telling you.
- 1:39:17He built it with Ryobi tools.
- 1:39:19I didn't even necessarily have to read past.
- 1:39:21Even the subtitle, which was, it's official, Cadillac is taking
- 1:39:25on Rolls Royce and Bentley.
- 1:39:27And I was like, ha ha ha ha ha, keep passing on the great
- 1:39:31Poupon, because you know what?
- 1:39:32That's been since day one of Cadillac, folks.
- 1:39:35Cadillac was designed to compete with Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Packard.
- 1:39:38This is not new.
- 1:39:39The question about Cadillac has been, why are they in the performance?
- 1:39:44Segment Cadillac racing, the sort of sports saloons because they have been
- 1:39:49for as long as Cadillac has been around.
- 1:39:51We talked to the Cadillac club, dude.
- 1:39:53Why is Bentley in the racing?
- 1:39:54It's the same thing.
- 1:39:55It's a double edged sword, but it's not new at any stretch.
- 1:39:59And I actually kind of feel like Cadillac has been lacking a super 340, 000.
- 1:40:06Too much maybe, but is it something that Cadillac needs to break away from
- 1:40:11the muscle car sedans they've been building for the last 10 or 15 years?
- 1:40:15Yeah, because they really don't have anything outside of the Escalade that is
- 1:40:20that limousine black car type of vehicle.
- 1:40:24And I think the Celestique maybe checks that box if it ever comes to be.
- 1:40:27Okay.
- 1:40:28So you've got 400, 000 to spend on a car.
- 1:40:31I'm buying this.
- 1:40:31You can buy a Rolls Royce, a Bentley.
- 1:40:34Or a Celeste or a Celeste iq, whatever it's called.
- 1:40:38Which one do you buy?
- 1:40:39I'm gonna buy a Porsche Tecan and have money left over.
- 1:40:42No, you're not.
- 1:40:42You've got three choices.
- 1:40:44You can buy a Rolls Royce, a Bentley, or a Celeste or a small company.
- 1:40:48I'm okay.
- 1:40:49Small company for sure, but the reality is, if I have to pick
- 1:40:53from the cars, I'm gonna buy a Bentley because it's a Volkswagen.
- 1:40:56What about you, Tanya?
- 1:40:57I have to choose one.
- 1:40:59You have to choose one.
- 1:40:59You can choose a BMW Rolls Royce, the Volkswagen Bentley, or the
- 1:41:04Chevrolet Cadillac, or you can buy a sweet frog franchise.
- 1:41:07Which one are you spending 400, 000 on?
- 1:41:12I was going to say that or a small Eastern block country.
- 1:41:16I'll do the Bentley also.
- 1:41:18You know, I'm right there with you.
- 1:41:20As much as I love the Phantom, I would do a Bentley because
- 1:41:23it's part of the Vag family.
- 1:41:25But you know what?
- 1:41:25None of us said.
- 1:41:26None of us said Cadillac.
- 1:41:28The people that are currently buying Rolls Royce and Bentleys,
- 1:41:30they'll never say Cadillac either.
- 1:41:32Well, you know what they might be buying?
- 1:41:33For their children.
- 1:41:35Oh, tell me there's a Baby 3.
- 1:41:37We talked before about the Bugatti Baby 2s.
- 1:41:41There was the Chiron.
- 1:41:42There was a Mini.
- 1:41:43Oh yes, the Bugatti Chiron, yes.
- 1:41:45It also had the Speed Key, I think.
- 1:41:47Yes.
- 1:41:47There is a company...
- 1:41:49Called group Harrington that apparently makes a whole bunch of these cars.
- 1:41:53There's the GB spirit.
- 1:41:55There's a spider, the Ferris Bueller, Ferrari, Eric, pick the fry.
- 1:41:59What would you pick?
- 1:42:00You got to go with the Cobra 289 Cobra.
- 1:42:03I'm doing the 300.
- 1:42:04You're going to go with the 300.
- 1:42:04I.
- 1:42:05Figured you would've went with the F 1 race car.
- 1:42:07Nah, I'm gonna go with the Merc.
- 1:42:08He's a Benz girl.
- 1:42:09And I probably would've, should've went with the Jeep.
- 1:42:11Let's see how much, let's see how much is...
- 1:42:13They're so expensive, they don't list the price.
- 1:42:16You might as well buy the real thing at that point.
- 1:42:18Yeah.
- 1:42:18You can design your car.
- 1:42:20Look at this shit.
- 1:42:20It's funny, you guys bring this up.
- 1:42:22I saw some of these.
- 1:42:24At some of the auctions in car week, they're really, really cool.
- 1:42:27These are the nicest go karts you have ever seen.
- 1:42:30I believe it.
- 1:42:31If only we could afford them, we could each get one and then go.
- 1:42:34We talked about this before the go karts need to look like the race cars,
- 1:42:37and then you can do a proper Petit Le Mans or Petit Le Mans classic.
- 1:42:41There'll be amazing.
- 1:42:42A Petit Petit Le Mans.
- 1:42:44You should be able to get the pricing.
- 1:42:46It says to email for a quote, because at the top of the page,
- 1:42:49it's got great British pounds, the.
- 1:42:52The euro or U.
- 1:42:53S.
- 1:42:53dollar, and you can add things to your shopping cart.
- 1:42:56I don't know because when I went into the 300, it says request for quotation.
- 1:43:00Leave your details and request quotation for the car and
- 1:43:02options you have selected above.
- 1:43:04Yeah, I see that you can't afford it.
- 1:43:07More than you can afford, pal.
- 1:43:09I can go buy a real one of these.
- 1:43:11Maybe two.
- 1:43:12For probably less than this mini one costs.
- 1:43:15I do like the little Ferrari California though.
- 1:43:17That's pretty sweet.
- 1:43:17Get all rich people things.
- 1:43:19I'm gonna get one for Henry.
- 1:43:21It's time we go down South to Florida for alligators and bears.
- 1:43:25You know what?
- 1:43:40I don't have any Florida men.
- 1:43:42What?
- 1:43:43I don't got no Florida men.
- 1:43:44I got other men, but no Florida men.
- 1:43:46By the way, did you guys see that picture that I sent you?
- 1:43:48Yeah, that was good.
- 1:43:49He pulled up next to me in the turn lane and he was like,
- 1:43:52Oh, can I get in front of you?
- 1:43:53I didn't realize this lane didn't go straight.
- 1:43:54And it was like, yes, whatever.
- 1:43:56And he pulled up into the middle of the intersection and
- 1:43:58I looked at his license plate.
- 1:43:59He said, Florida, man, like Jesus Christ.
- 1:44:02Of course you are.
- 1:44:04Well, we had some California man during car week, as you would
- 1:44:09expect car weeks, a little bit more upscale than just cars and coffee.
- 1:44:12Although there are some cars and coffee, I went to one sponsored by the Ferrari club.
- 1:44:16It was fantastic, included wine and hors d'oeuvres and
- 1:44:19all sorts of other fun stuff.
- 1:44:20Not like any cars and coffee that we have here on the East coast running
- 1:44:23up and down highway 101 between the different areas of Monterey, the
- 1:44:28California highway patrol or the chips.
- 1:44:31Got tipped off.
- 1:44:32Uh, I don't know what the tip off was.
- 1:44:33It was car week.
- 1:44:34We all knew that they pulled over 154 speeders during the course of car week.
- 1:44:41Only how many of them were in an Alexis LX 600.
- 1:44:46Not going to say we didn't open the taps on the Lexus a couple of times.
- 1:44:50It will allegedly, allegedly.
- 1:44:53That's a lot of people, though it is, but to Tanya's point, it also seems awful
- 1:44:58low considering the thousands of people that are participating in car week.
- 1:45:02This actually brings up a good question.
- 1:45:04154 people at Monterey car week.
- 1:45:06This is over the course of the entire event.
- 1:45:08I'm guessing they don't really, they really give that detail.
- 1:45:11Do they catch more people here?
- 1:45:13Or more people at H2O.
- 1:45:17Ooh.
- 1:45:18Because H2O isn't just speeding though.
- 1:45:20Yeah.
- 1:45:21So are more people ticketed at Monterey or H2O?
- 1:45:24I'm going to guess H2O.
- 1:45:25All right.
- 1:45:26This one doesn't have a link.
- 1:45:27It was something I heard on the radio yesterday morning,
- 1:45:30which was a very bizarre story.
- 1:45:32The radio host was Talking about his encounter in an Uber recently, a Tesla
- 1:45:37Uber, so it was a Model 3, and he got to just chatting with the driver like,
- 1:45:42oh, electric car, how do you like it?
- 1:45:44Like, I was thinking about getting an EV, blah, blah.
- 1:45:46Dude's like, you want to drive my car?
- 1:45:50And the guy's like, Uh, no, man, I'm good.
- 1:45:54Dude was like, no, you have to drive this car.
- 1:45:56Like, if you're interested, you need to.
- 1:45:58Jets out.
- 1:45:58Makes him get in the driver's seat.
- 1:46:00So now he's driving his own Uber.
- 1:46:03And then proceeds to be like, okay, they're driving around.
- 1:46:06He's heading home.
- 1:46:09And then he's like, Oh, but you really got to open it up.
- 1:46:11Get on the JFX.
- 1:46:12So if you're from Baltimore local, you'll understand what that means.
- 1:46:15He's like, you know, get on it.
- 1:46:17And he's like, no, man, I'm good.
- 1:46:18No, no, you really got to like, open it up and experience it.
- 1:46:21So you're like, he said he accelerated a little bit.
- 1:46:23And the guy was like, no, get on it.
- 1:46:26Dude was sitting there telling him to like, just, you know, go balls
- 1:46:31on his like Tesla to this perfect stranger that like got in his
- 1:46:36backseat that he doesn't even know.
- 1:46:38Dude said he was just, like, freaking out and just finally,
- 1:46:41like, pulled up to his, like, home and was like, Alright, thanks, man.
- 1:46:46Un real.
- 1:46:47He was like, I was so scared.
- 1:46:49He's like, what's the liability if something had happened
- 1:46:51and I was driving the Hooper?
- 1:46:55Oh my God, that's ridiculous.
- 1:46:57So watch out if you're in Baltimore getting an Uber.
- 1:47:01You might have to drive your own Uber.
- 1:47:03You might have to pay and drive your own Uber.
- 1:47:06For some reason, I thought you were going to say that the car was stolen.
- 1:47:10When I think about this entire story, Is it really an Uber or is that a rental car?
- 1:47:15It's a Toro.
- 1:47:16What star review do you give?
- 1:47:17Do you like rate yourself?
- 1:47:19My Uber driver was really good.
- 1:47:21It was me.
- 1:47:22I got here real quick.
- 1:47:23I tell you, if that guy gave me the opportunity to drive his car, five
- 1:47:27star rating and like 50 percent tip.
- 1:47:29I would have been like, bro, you're awesome.
- 1:47:30This is cool.
- 1:47:33He might've been giving you a one star review though.
- 1:47:38I didn't know my Tesla could do that.
- 1:47:40Look at that drift.
- 1:47:42But speaking of what a Tesla can or cannot do going to California
- 1:47:47again, it's a California theme, Mono city, wherever that is.
- 1:47:51I don't know.
- 1:47:51I think recently there's been some storms.
- 1:47:54This, that, and the other good for them.
- 1:47:56They need water and shout out to all our friends in Southern
- 1:47:58California that experienced that flash flood last week and a 5.
- 1:48:030 earthquake, like within 24 hours, like unbelievable, crazy weather in
- 1:48:07the LA area, especially, and this dude was driving down some road and the.
- 1:48:12Full self driving mode.
- 1:48:14There was a sign flooded area up ahead.
- 1:48:16Oh, it's probably not real.
- 1:48:18There's always a flooded sign out there.
- 1:48:20Okay.
- 1:48:20There was some water in the road.
- 1:48:22The full self driving doesn't know how to interpret that.
- 1:48:26So he kept driving.
- 1:48:27There's a video of this.
- 1:48:28It's pretty funny.
- 1:48:29Seemingly drives through the initial puddle, which wasn't too deep, honestly.
- 1:48:33As soon as it hits traction again, though, the thing goes, like,
- 1:48:37crazy and just, like, jerks to the left, swerves off the road.
- 1:48:42Dude ends up, basically, water up to the door, almost to the windows, like,
- 1:48:48in a ditch off the side of the road.
- 1:48:50I can't imagine what that bill's gonna be, because, like, the bumper was, like,
- 1:48:53hanging off and everything's wet now.
- 1:48:56So what's funny about the picture, that's the cover photo of the video, when I
- 1:49:01first looked at it, I couldn't tell if that was dirt or alligators, right?
- 1:49:05Doesn't it look like it was taken like gators.
- 1:49:11Yes, it does.
- 1:49:12And the guy's like blurry and getting out of the passenger seat.
- 1:49:16He goes through a flash flood and then ends up in a pond.
- 1:49:20I mean, what are the chances?
- 1:49:21First of all, What was he doing?
- 1:49:24Because the full self driving failed, but you could have tried to take
- 1:49:27control of the car at that point, probably couldn't because it was
- 1:49:29forced the steering wheel or whatever.
- 1:49:31But like, you could have also anticipated like using your brain, like, Oh,
- 1:49:34there's actually standing water up.
- 1:49:36Cause you could clearly see it in the dash cams of the Tesla that a rational
- 1:49:40person would have maybe hit the brakes and taken it out of full self drive and,
- 1:49:43you know, cautiously driven through there.
- 1:49:45I wonder how much water it Took on because of the precise micron
- 1:49:50of the panel gaps of the doors.
- 1:49:53And we know how good the seals are on the Tesla three.
- 1:49:56A lot of water.
- 1:49:56Cause these still remain with home Depot parts.
- 1:49:58Yeah.
- 1:49:59Yeah.
- 1:49:59So it was a kiddie pool inside.
- 1:50:00Maybe it knew it was going to combust.
- 1:50:03So it drove into the water.
- 1:50:07Yeah.
- 1:50:08Funny as that sounds to say, it actually makes my brain kind of spin into a
- 1:50:13more serious direction to say, what if there was leakage in the battery area
- 1:50:19and suddenly now he's got water in there in the containment part, right?
- 1:50:22This could have turned out really, really poorly for this guy.
- 1:50:25To Tanya's point, look ahead, think ahead, don't let the car drive for you,
- 1:50:29because with these EVs, all it takes is one little leak, and the next thing
- 1:50:34you know, you're in the middle of a serious hazmat and electrical issue.
- 1:50:37What the hell is full self driving mode?
- 1:50:40That is autonomous level 27, remember?
- 1:50:43That means that you can recline your seat.
- 1:50:45Go to sleep.
- 1:50:45Oh, just kidding.
- 1:50:46That means that you have to have your hands on the steering
- 1:50:49wheel, but the car will drive itself better than a human being.
- 1:50:52So how is this different than autopilot?
- 1:50:54It's what they call their autopilot.
- 1:50:56Oh, I thought they called autopilot autopilot.
- 1:50:58They keep changing the name.
- 1:50:59So we think it's something different.
- 1:51:00That's all.
- 1:51:01Yeah.
- 1:51:01Because they keep getting in lawsuits for the name of the product.
- 1:51:04The last but not least, we're going to jump to the other coast to Pennsylvania.
- 1:51:08Pennsylvania coast.
- 1:51:09Does Pennsylvania have a coast?
- 1:51:11I mean, Jersey, Pennsylvania's coast is Jersey.
- 1:51:16I meant we're moving from the western side of the U.
- 1:51:19S.
- 1:51:19to the east coast, of which Pennsylvania is not directly on it, but we're moving
- 1:51:25to the eastern side of the United States.
- 1:51:30I apologize.
- 1:51:31Oh my god.
- 1:51:33What the hell is this?
- 1:51:34Exactly.
- 1:51:35Pennsylvania man allegedly crashed his Toyota Corolla into a house intentionally,
- 1:51:40and he wound up Wedged into the second floor of this house, the picture alone.
- 1:51:47I'm like, there must've been like a ramp and I think there was some sort of
- 1:51:50berm embankment and he like turned and he shot Dukes of Hazzard and then ended
- 1:51:56up in the second floor of this house.
- 1:52:00How fast was he going?
- 1:52:02I don't know.
- 1:52:02Why did he do it on purpose?
- 1:52:04That's another question that is not explained.
- 1:52:08Can you imagine being in your bedroom on the second floor?
- 1:52:11And a car comes crashing through the side of the house.
- 1:52:15No, I mean, unbelievable, but you know, testament to those
- 1:52:21Pennsylvania houses didn't collapse right into the first floor.
- 1:52:25It's just hanging there like a lawn dart.
- 1:52:27It just like busted a hole in the side of it.
- 1:52:29And otherwise it's.
- 1:52:30I like the gutters a little bit on the front porch roof.
- 1:52:34It was like that.
- 1:52:36Apparently there are houses that are built hurricane proof and
- 1:52:39storm proof and whatever proof Pennsylvania houses are Toyota proof.
- 1:52:43So there you go.
- 1:52:45Well, with that, it's time that we go quickly behind the pit
- 1:52:48wall and talk about motor sports.
- 1:52:50And last car, Tanya, you're on a roll.
- 1:52:54Yeah, apparently that dude who won his first NASCAR race, the Chicago
- 1:52:58Street Race, Shane Van Gisbergen, he's gonna do another NASCAR race.
- 1:53:04Nice.
- 1:53:04Good job, Van Gisbergen.
- 1:53:06We need more European sounding names in NASCAR, I think.
- 1:53:10It's like Talladega Knights.
- 1:53:12Formula One, come on, what's been happening?
- 1:53:14Anything good?
- 1:53:14You've been on summer break, the last race before summer break
- 1:53:17was Spa, and I fell asleep.
- 1:53:19Oh, is that good, huh?
- 1:53:20First half won.
- 1:53:21Oh, shocker.
- 1:53:22How many seconds did he win by?
- 1:53:2450?
- 1:53:24I don't know, because I fell asleep, and it was like, yep, he won, okay.
- 1:53:27But he didn't win his next race.
- 1:53:31Yeah, that's right.
- 1:53:31I forgot about that.
- 1:53:32He was involved in a sim racing incident.
- 1:53:35That happened a while ago already though.
- 1:53:37That was already a couple of real F1 races ago.
- 1:53:39And that was a pretty funny video to watch.
- 1:53:41Footage of that.
- 1:53:42He got hunted or something.
- 1:53:44And then he just in a full Forza VRL league rage mode, just.
- 1:53:51Torpedoed the dude off the track, which was very unsportsmanlike,
- 1:53:56and he should have more control and then got disqualified for that.
- 1:53:59You know how we talked about how expensive it is to go to Las Vegas
- 1:54:03for the Formula One Grand Prix.
- 1:54:05I've seen pictures from folks on social media, folks that we're
- 1:54:08friends with that have taken pictures that have been in Vegas saying
- 1:54:11construction is happening, looks like they're putting the race together.
- 1:54:14Again, like we talked about how expensive it might be to go to this
- 1:54:17race, you know, million dollar packages at the wind and the Venetian and all
- 1:54:21these places to watch the race from.
- 1:54:23But our friend, Elizabeth Blackstock over Jalopnik says you can pick
- 1:54:26up your F1 tickets at Costco.
- 1:54:28I mean, does that make them less expensive?
- 1:54:30I don't believe it's for the Vegas race.
- 1:54:34You can buy your Austin tickets.
- 1:54:36Yes.
- 1:54:36Because with Miami and Vegas, who wants to go to Austin?
- 1:54:40True.
- 1:54:41It's 106 this week in Austin.
- 1:54:43Insane.
- 1:54:44But you know, how American is it?
- 1:54:46I'm going to buy my F1 tickets while I buy six pounds of country crack.
- 1:54:50It would be more American if they were NASCAR tickets, but they give
- 1:54:54those away with a Costco pizza.
- 1:54:56Moving on very quickly to WRC news, which nobody cares about.
- 1:55:00I just want to highlight there was a little bit of drama.
- 1:55:02A little bit of drama, former star of WRC Terre Nouvelle running for
- 1:55:07Hyundai was disqualified from the Kenya rally because he was doing some
- 1:55:12illegal recce, as they call it, or reconnaissance, trying to get inside
- 1:55:17information before his sighting passes and things like that and anything else
- 1:55:20he could gather about the Kenya rally.
- 1:55:22So he was disqualified from Kenya.
- 1:55:25And I still have some rallies to catch up on like Portugal and others.
- 1:55:29So I might, or might not cover that at a later date.
- 1:55:32All depends on if our fans care or if Brad cares.
- 1:55:35Nope.
- 1:55:35Yeah.
- 1:55:35I figured I'll keep it to myself then.
- 1:55:38My guilty pleasures rally.
- 1:55:39So that's all I tried.
- 1:55:40That being said, did you know that dirt fish.
- 1:55:44The rally school in the United States has changed their website and they have
- 1:55:48taken over where auto sport has left off of their coverage of all things rally.
- 1:55:53So Brad, you were asking about where you can see it other than red bull TV.
- 1:55:57You can now check out coverage of WRC on dirt fish.
- 1:56:01So you can go to dot com and see different types of coverage of the rallies there.
- 1:56:07I'll give that a try.
- 1:56:07There you go.
- 1:56:08And on a sad note, autocross, one of our favorite disciplines of racing that a
- 1:56:15lot of us started out in, unfortunately took two drivers in Washington state.
- 1:56:20It was an SCCA event, pro solo event, and as I read it, basically
- 1:56:25the guy was on course and came in on his lap and just never stopped.
- 1:56:30According to A comment on that news article from somebody, it says, according
- 1:56:34to the conversation on GRM, which included the brother of the driver in the
- 1:56:38incident, the driver suffered a sudden heart attack and lost consciousness.
- 1:56:42The car did eventually stop when it hit a building again, sad day because it
- 1:56:46took the lives of 2 members and this is not a normal occurrence for autocross.
- 1:56:52It's.
- 1:56:52Generally very safe because the speeds are much lower.
- 1:56:54Things have been known to happen.
- 1:56:56Mistakes have been made at autocrosses in the past, but yeah, this is just sad
- 1:57:00and tragic and hopefully won't besmirch the great reputation that autocross
- 1:57:04has or keep people from going to them in the future, I want to remind people
- 1:57:08that our motorsports news has been brought to us in partnership by the
- 1:57:11international motor racing research center out of Watkins Glen, as I mentioned
- 1:57:15earlier, there's been a couple of.
- 1:57:17Podcast episodes this month, one of them, the history of Corvette celebrating its
- 1:57:2170th birthday with Kip Sider, as well as an road to success episode with Mark
- 1:57:26Steigerwald, the current director of the IMRRC as well, where he talks about the
- 1:57:3025th anniversary of the center, talks about the Glenn's birthday, we talk
- 1:57:34about Le Mans, a lot of other really interesting stuff on that episode.
- 1:57:38So as a reminder, they are still running their sweepstakes for a 2024 Corvette.
- 1:57:45Ray, you can use the promo code Ray launch to get bonus tickets and either
- 1:57:51win the Corvette or take the cash option.
- 1:57:54All the proceeds from the sweepstakes benefit the
- 1:57:57continued progress of the center.
- 1:57:58It helps them fund what they're doing because they are a nonprofit.
- 1:58:01They do have some events coming up.
- 1:58:04Here in September and the later fall on September the 16th, they're doing a
- 1:58:08center conversation called Brumos and American racing icon with Sean Cridland
- 1:58:13at 1 PM on September 30th, they're doing their 25th anniversary party on November.
- 1:58:17The second, the day before and leading up to the arts and girls symposium
- 1:58:23on motor racing history, they're doing an international real wheel.
- 1:58:28Film festival celebrating the historical racing documentaries
- 1:58:32on November the 2nd at 5 PM at the downtown Watkins Glen movie theater.
- 1:58:36And then on November the 3rd and 4th, we have the Michael R Argen singer symposium
- 1:58:41on international motor racing history, which we will be in attendance for.
- 1:58:46So looking forward to seeing anybody and everybody, if you come out
- 1:58:49to the event, it's a great event.
- 1:58:50And we will also be live streaming it on grand touring motor sports on Twitch.
- 1:58:55Coming up in September, we have a few local news and events brought to
- 1:58:58us by collector car guide dot net.
- 1:59:00The ultimate reference for car enthusiasts, the car enthusiast, I
- 1:59:04guess, schedule is winding down as we head into the fall and winter
- 1:59:09months here on the east coast.
- 1:59:11So it's not a big long list, but there are some events that I'd like to highlight
- 1:59:15from the producers of motorama races and shows comes America's truck best.
- 1:59:19That's September 2nd and 3rd at the Lebanon Valley Expo
- 1:59:23Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
- 1:59:25Fuel Fest, September 9th at NJMP.
- 1:59:28The Smoky Mountain Driving Tours is hosting a three day driving event at
- 1:59:31Tale of the Dragon in Tennessee and North Carolina from September 15th to
- 1:59:35the 17th sponsored by ESE carbon wheels.
- 1:59:38Moto America, Superbikes, and King of Baggers will be at NJMP September
- 1:59:4222nd through the 24th and Cruise and Brews at the Rockville Moose in
- 1:59:46Rockville, Maryland on September 27th.
- 1:59:49These events and tons more just like it.
- 1:59:51All the details are available over at a collector car guide.
- 1:59:54net.
- 1:59:54That's right.
- 1:59:55And now it's time for the HBD Junkie trackside report.
- 1:59:58And much like the car show scene, the track scene is also winding down.
- 2:00:02We're heading into the fall.
- 2:00:04The racing schedule here starts to dry up in late October, early November.
- 2:00:08If you're running VIR and some of the Carolinas and things like that, but
- 2:00:11there are plenty of events all across the country that you can look up in HBDJunkie.
- 2:00:16com's database.
- 2:00:17But for us, there's been some cancellations, especially over at HOD.
- 2:00:21They had to cancel some of their October events.
- 2:00:23And their last event will be at NJMP Lightning on September the 23rd and 24th.
- 2:00:29So that's about a month away.
- 2:00:31That's the last event on their schedule.
- 2:00:32They've had to cut their schedule short.
- 2:00:34New Jersey one day on a Thursday is in October.
- 2:00:37So I'm not sure why the September one is the last event.
- 2:00:39I think it might be advanced only no coaches or something like that.
- 2:00:42There is an event on the schedule for bikers.
- 2:00:45Brad mentioned the Moto America Super Bike and King of Baggers event at N J N
- 2:00:49P, but there's also the Barber Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports Park on
- 2:00:54October the sixth through the eighth.
- 2:00:56We have a link to that so you can check it out.
- 2:00:58We've personally been to the Barber Motorcycle Museum.
- 2:01:01It is awesome.
- 2:01:02It is a site to be hold.
- 2:01:03It is the largest motorcycle museum in the country, and Barbara Motorsports
- 2:01:07Park is a great backdrop for some.
- 2:01:09Racing, whether it's cars or our two wheeled friends on their motorcycles.
- 2:01:13So I highly recommend running down to Birmingham, Alabama to
- 2:01:16check out the Barbara vintage festival, if you have time.
- 2:01:19And for those of you that do want to go to the remaining HOD events on the
- 2:01:22schedule, remember that our code break fix 23, that you can use during the
- 2:01:27checkout process is still valid on your registration in case you missed out.
- 2:01:31Check out the other podcast episodes that air during the summer break.
- 2:01:34More than just a paddock party, Gridlife has turned into a phenomenon
- 2:01:38with one of the fastest growing racing and drift programs on the market.
- 2:01:41We chat with founder Adam Joubet about how it all got started
- 2:01:45and why you should be involved.
- 2:01:46Our panel of petrolheads extraordinaire combine their brain powers to tackle
- 2:01:50the question what should I buy from the muscle and malaise era.
- 2:01:54We celebrate with Mark Steigerwald and Kip Zeider from the International
- 2:01:57Motor Racing Research Center as they celebrate 75 years of Watkins Glen,
- 2:02:02the 70th birthday of the Corvette, and the 25th anniversary of the IMRRC.
- 2:02:07AMF board member and pro rider Clive Savakul talks to us about the world
- 2:02:12of professional motorcycle racing, motorcycle track days, and setting a
- 2:02:15record at Pike's Peak on a BMW motorcycle.
- 2:02:18Want to be part of the oldest motorsports club in the world?
- 2:02:21Then consider joining the ACO.
- 2:02:23Don't take our word for it.
- 2:02:25Tune in and listen to David Lowe, president of the ACO USA,
- 2:02:28explain the benefits of being a member of the ACO in the U.
- 2:02:32S.
- 2:02:32Thanks again to everyone that has come on the show over this summer.
- 2:02:35Well, we don't have any new Patreons for August, and that might be because...
- 2:02:39There was a little bit of a mess up.
- 2:02:41Check your credit card statements.
- 2:02:43They made some changes with their payment process and they moved from
- 2:02:46California to somewhere else and then they corrected it and this and that.
- 2:02:49So some people's cards were getting declined.
- 2:02:52Check it out in case you dropped off to get our behind the scenes,
- 2:02:55access, early access bloopers, tons of extra stuff like Pitstop episodes
- 2:03:00are available on our Patreon.
- 2:03:01We are actually using Patreon now to pre release episodes cause some things
- 2:03:05have changed with our podcast server.
- 2:03:07So we'll be throwing them over there.
- 2:03:08For free.
- 2:03:09We also have free trials that you can do things like that.
- 2:03:12But if you were an existing subscriber and suddenly you dropped off, make
- 2:03:16sure that it didn't get declined because of a change in the payment
- 2:03:19processing system over at Patriot.
- 2:03:21Anniversaries for the month of August.
- 2:03:23We have Rob Lorz, who was featured in our man myth and little blue Miata
- 2:03:27episode celebrating nine years with GTM.
- 2:03:30Eric, you were going to say nine years.
- 2:03:32It's a long time.
- 2:03:33I was, that is a huge achievement.
- 2:03:36I mean, Rob has been with us since the very beginning.
- 2:03:38And so it's awesome to have loyal members like that in the group.
- 2:03:42And if you're interested in knowing what's going on with Rob, he no
- 2:03:44longer has the little blue Miata.
- 2:03:46It lives on with another club member, but he's got a GTI that
- 2:03:49he's been towing around with lately.
- 2:03:51That's right.
- 2:03:52And if you'd like to become a member of GTM, be sure to check out the
- 2:03:55new clubhouse website at club.
- 2:03:56gtmotorsports.
- 2:03:58org to learn more.
- 2:03:59Take us home, Brad.
- 2:04:00Special thanks to our guest host, no one because we didn't have any special
- 2:04:03guests on this episode, but this is my last drive through for a while because
- 2:04:08I will be on paternity leave as my wife gives birth to our second son.
- 2:04:13Just so you all know, in September we have a surprise guest host lined
- 2:04:16up, but if you are interested in getting on the October episode and a
- 2:04:20couple of the episodes in the future, please do not hesitate to reach out.

- 2:04:39favorite music service or podcast app.
- 2:04:41We are now available on threads, the new social media
- 2:04:45platform, replacing Twitter X.
- 2:04:48I don't know what it's called anymore and also a shout out to all our new
- 2:04:52subscribers on our second YouTube channel.
- 2:04:55We tripled the number of subscribers on our long format at Grand Touring
- 2:05:01Motorsports Media channel on YouTube, mostly in part because of
- 2:05:05Car Week, but it's awesome to see the people commenting, watching
- 2:05:07the videos, all that kind of stuff.
- 2:05:09We did separate our long format content from our short club content.
- 2:05:14So it made it easier to find stuff and index the videos, et cetera.
- 2:05:17So really do appreciate the uptick in the subscribers and keep them coming.
- 2:05:21And of course, thank you to our executive producer and co host Tanya
- 2:05:25and all the members who support GTM without you, none of this.

- 2:05:39I'll be back.
- 2:05:41Hasta la vista, baby.
- 2:05:44How's everybody feeling tonight?
- 2:05:46How are we doing?
- 2:05:47I just went on a 10 minute rant about the motor vehicle association.
- 2:05:51So I think we should have recorded it.
- 2:05:53I think we missed an opportunity there to get Tanya on her soap box,
- 2:05:57which doesn't happen very often.
- 2:05:58Usually it's Eric.
- 2:05:59She does it when it's Tesla's, but we'll get to that later.
- 2:06:02So Tesla
- 2:06:20There's some idiot in a Volvo.
- 2:06:22Lights on behind me.
- 2:06:25I lean out the window and scream.
