Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with I Heart Radio. The Bills, the Chiefs, the Cowboys,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Vikings, and the forty Niners. There are five teams
- 0:23Speaker 1: that have clinching scenarios in week fifteen. The last I
- 0:27Speaker 1: mentioned there the forty Niners could actually wrap up the
- 0:29Speaker 1: NFC West coming up tomorrow. We have all those scenarios
- 0:32Speaker 1: coming up in this hour of NFL Now on NFL Network.
- 0:35Speaker 1: From our newsroom in Los Angeles, my name is Andrew Ceciliano.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Let's go live to the league meeting in Dallas. Not
- 0:41Speaker 1: for debating whether or not roughing the passers should be reviewable.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We'll say that for later. The unter wrap repoort Tom
- 0:47Speaker 1: Pella Sero. Let's talk quarterbacks here. The Jets do not
- 0:51Speaker 1: have a clinching scenario tom to try to get back
- 0:54Speaker 1: in to a playoffs slot. They get the Lions on Sunday.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What's going on in Flora Park with their quarterbacks? Well, Andrew,
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Jets continue to move forward as if Mike White
- 1:06Speaker 1: somehow is going to start after taking those lacious hits
- 1:09Speaker 1: in last week's game twice, leaving getting himself back in
- 1:13Speaker 1: teammates and coach Robert Salt had praised Mike White for
- 1:16Speaker 1: his toughness. He underwent a battery of tests, all of
- 1:18Speaker 1: which left them encouraged. They consider him to be day today.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He is going to be limited in practice for today.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The real news though, coming out of the Jets headquarters
- 1:27Speaker 1: who's going to be the backup quarterback assuming that Mike
- 1:29Speaker 1: White does play. It's this week going to be Zach Wilson,
- 1:32Speaker 1: who will be in uniform for the first time since
- 1:35Speaker 1: he was benched several weeks ago amidst significant issues with
- 1:38Speaker 1: accuracy with his mechanics. They wanted him to reset. Now
- 1:41Speaker 1: he has been getting work in practice, mainly reps after
- 1:45Speaker 1: practice of what they call their flight school, running all
- 1:47Speaker 1: the same places they run in practice, but he does
- 1:49Speaker 1: it with some of the practice squad guys and others.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So Rob Calabariz, who's the quarterbacks coach, spent a lot
- 1:54Speaker 1: of time with them. Michael Floor had spent time with
- 1:55Speaker 1: him well, and now Zack Wilson is perhaps one more
- 1:59Speaker 1: hit away potentially for rom actually getting back onto the
- 2:02Speaker 1: field for the Jets, okay, and that would be against
- 2:05Speaker 1: the Lions. Meantime, Desmond Ritter is getting on the field
- 2:08Speaker 1: for the first time since the preseason, at least taking
- 2:11Speaker 1: legitimate snaps here coming up on Sunday Ian As he
- 2:13Speaker 1: is the new quarterback for the Falcons. What's going on
- 2:17Speaker 1: though with the guy he's replacing, Marcus Mariotta. Well, there
- 2:22Speaker 1: are two separate things here going on for the Atlanta Falcons. One,
- 2:25Speaker 1: Desmond rid Of, the rookie really promising third round are
- 2:28Speaker 1: gonna come in and start for the Falcons. That decision
- 2:30Speaker 1: was made regardless of any other injury situation. And then
- 2:34Speaker 1: there's Marcus Mariota, who was benched after starting for the
- 2:38Speaker 1: balance of the season, informed the Atlanta Falcons that he
- 2:41Speaker 1: had a need that he was gonna get checked out.
- 2:43Speaker 1: He's gonna have knee surgery to clean up what is
- 2:46Speaker 1: being termed as a chronic knee issue. Obviously hasn't uh
- 2:50Speaker 1: apparently has bothered him. We did not know about this
- 2:53Speaker 1: until recently. Gon have knee surgery on I are his
- 2:56Speaker 1: season is over, and obviously there's some questions concerned about
- 2:59Speaker 1: whether he's even gonna be around the team. I know
- 3:01Speaker 1: they would like him to be around. I know it
- 3:03Speaker 1: is extremely rare, very veteran to just not be around
- 3:08Speaker 1: the team, especially when he could be mentoring a young quarterback.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But that, I guess seems to be the situation for
- 3:13Speaker 1: Mariota and the Falcons. Okay, Marcus Mariota not with the
- 3:16Speaker 1: team as he's getting that knee checked out and having
- 3:18Speaker 1: surgery and what is a chronic issue. Meantime, Tom Let's
- 3:22Speaker 1: get to the Bears and the Eagles here. The Eagles
- 3:26Speaker 1: are the one team that are in that is already in.
- 3:28Speaker 1: The Bears have already been eliminated in the whole idea
- 3:30Speaker 1: of Justin Fields against Jalen Hurts would be fun. Um,
- 3:34Speaker 1: we know Hurts is going to be there. What's field
- 3:36Speaker 1: situation for Sunday? Andrew Justin Fields not practicing today because
- 3:43Speaker 1: of an illness, but Bears coach Matt eber Flew said
- 3:45Speaker 1: that they believe he's going to be fine and be
- 3:47Speaker 1: able to play on Sunday. There's been a lot of
- 3:49Speaker 1: that going around the NFL, different teams dealing with the illness.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Is obviously never ideal, particularly for a young quarterback to
- 3:55Speaker 1: misreps during the week, but does not sound like there's
- 3:58Speaker 1: a whole lot of cause for concern, which of course
- 4:00Speaker 1: is good news, not just for the Bears. But oh,
- 4:03Speaker 1: thousands of people around the country who may or may
- 4:05Speaker 1: not have fantasy playoffs or a final regular season fantasy
- 4:08Speaker 1: game coming up this weekend. Sounds like Justin Fields. It
- 4:10Speaker 1: has been as good as anybody over the last two
- 4:12Speaker 1: months since I cut him off my team, UH should
- 4:14Speaker 1: be out there. Okay, you cut Justin Fields? Fascinating Ian.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Do you have Dallas Goddard on you need a rosters No?
- 4:23Speaker 1: I have Travis Kelsey on my fantasy team, maybe the
- 4:25Speaker 1: most dominant tight ended fantasy history. Help me take the
- 4:29Speaker 1: lead here. I'm gonna be in number one seed for
- 4:31Speaker 1: the playoffs. But Dallas Goddard is still extremely relevant for
- 4:34Speaker 1: the other people who have him on their fantasy team,
- 4:36Speaker 1: specifically those who put him on ire hoping he would
- 4:39Speaker 1: return to practice. He has now officially returned to practice
- 4:42Speaker 1: his twenty one day windows open for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 4:45Speaker 1: The Eagles, who are among the best teams in the NFL,
- 4:49Speaker 1: have as good a record as anyone, and now have
- 4:51Speaker 1: one of their best players, Dallas Goddard, coming back this
- 4:54Speaker 1: week and practical see if he's able to play UH
- 4:56Speaker 1: this weekend, But either way, help is on the way
- 4:59Speaker 1: for the Philadelphia Eagles, not that they need it right.
- 5:03Speaker 1: For the record, I have Brock Purdy on my fantasy
- 5:06Speaker 1: team and he helped lead the Clowns do a huge
- 5:08Speaker 1: victory this past Sunday. There you go, Tom and fingers crossed.
- 5:11Speaker 1: The brock Purty Clowns. Well, it's the Clowns. It's actually no, no,
- 5:17Speaker 1: no no. The full name of the team is taken
- 5:19Speaker 1: second reference of the show from Office Space. Taken from
- 5:23Speaker 1: Office Space. So if remember the movie, it's actually a
- 5:25Speaker 1: much longer name. It's the No Talent Clowns. If you will, um, yeah, yes,
- 5:33Speaker 1: So here's hoping brock pretty plays tomorrow. Got it? Okay? Name? No,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it's a great name, and they're amazing. It's really a
- 5:40Speaker 1: very beating name. I think it's a great name. Thank
- 5:43Speaker 1: you Tom, Thank you Ian. Brock Purty should be good
- 5:47Speaker 1: to go. We we we hope he hasn't really practiced
- 5:50Speaker 1: much because well they're not really practicing. It's a Thursday
- 5:53Speaker 1: game here, obviously, the Seahawks and the Nighters coming up tomorrow.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The Nighters can wrap up the NFC West with a
- 6:00Speaker 1: win on Thursday Night football. This is a rematch. If
- 6:05Speaker 1: you people remember, do you remember I think so from
- 6:08Speaker 1: week two this is going down as the game that
- 6:10Speaker 1: will be remembering the game in which Trey Lance got hurt.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It happened here in the first quarter out of design
- 6:16Speaker 1: quarterback Ron He broke his ankle. He was carted off
- 6:18Speaker 1: the field and since then it has been Jimmy Garoppolo
- 6:21Speaker 1: all the way for the forty Niners until he got
- 6:23Speaker 1: hurt and Brock Purdy had to come in. But Garoppolo
- 6:27Speaker 1: got through this game. Here's a touchdown to Ross Dwelly,
- 6:30Speaker 1: a thirty eight yard score. The Niners were going to
- 6:32Speaker 1: win this thing to seven. And now the rematch. If
- 6:35Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan could take his team to Seattle and beat
- 6:38Speaker 1: the Seahawks tomorrow night, they win the NFC West going
- 6:43Speaker 1: into Seattle. Let you tell anyone on the road, but Seattle,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think, Um, you know, I don't think I've ever
- 6:47Speaker 1: been anywhere louder than They're just and we know how
- 6:49Speaker 1: their fans are, we know how that stadium is. You've
- 6:52Speaker 1: got to be ready for. You can't expect to hear
- 6:54Speaker 1: not just at the line of scrimmage, but also in
- 6:55Speaker 1: the huddle a number of times. And um, it's a
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's a big difference playing there. They make it hard.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Only you know they don't uh, you know, they don't
- 7:02Speaker 1: do too many crazy things. They just like to play
- 7:05Speaker 1: art and making a physical style game. And you know
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's that's gonna be fun for us. You know, we
- 7:09Speaker 1: get an opportunity the second time around to see what
- 7:12Speaker 1: we can do, see what they could do, try to
- 7:15Speaker 1: even things out here with the forty Niners and hold
- 7:18Speaker 1: off those Niners from winning the NFC West for the
- 7:21Speaker 1: first time since twenty nine. To get brock pretty status
- 7:25Speaker 1: is up in the air. We'll find out a little
- 7:26Speaker 1: bit more tomorrow. Get an official injury designation coming up
- 7:30Speaker 1: later this afternoon. All my Ruiz back with made the
- 7:32Speaker 1: desk rate to have you one more to talk about
- 7:34Speaker 1: this one. Brock pretty played well last week against a
- 7:36Speaker 1: Todd Bowles defense on a short week that had to
- 7:39Speaker 1: travel cross country. Again, it's a short week here, it's
- 7:42Speaker 1: a road game for Pretty against a different Pete Carroll defense. Yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: brock Pretty one of the great stories in the NFL
- 7:48Speaker 1: this season. So much excitement for tomorrow, and I think
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's done nothing but give the forty Niners reason for
- 7:55Speaker 1: justification on all the confidence that they've expressed in him,
- 7:59Speaker 1: But obviously there are questions that remain on how sustainable
- 8:02Speaker 1: all this success has been. You mentioned the short week
- 8:06Speaker 1: now playing on a Thursday night, fighting through an injury,
- 8:09Speaker 1: preparing his body and mentally for his first road game.
- 8:13Speaker 1: There's the challenge of the environment playing at Seattle, one
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the more hostile places to play in the NFL.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You heard Kyle Shanahan say it, and there you you
- 8:22Speaker 1: said it. One of the great football defensive minds of
- 8:25Speaker 1: this generation, Pete Carroll, going up against that defense, even
- 8:28Speaker 1: though they haven't been at their best necessarily this season.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Always play the forty Niners tough, so brock Purty will
- 8:34Speaker 1: be challenged in multiple ways, in ways that he hasn't
- 8:37Speaker 1: been challenged so far in this young career of his.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Should be exciting to see that in primetime tomorrow night.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Also a challenge for Geno Smith against what the Niners
- 8:46Speaker 1: bring in, which is the number one defense in football.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Gino hasn't had much of a running game, a lot
- 8:51Speaker 1: of injuries in the backfield a couple of weeks as
- 8:53Speaker 1: well a lot more on his shoulders. You mentioned the
- 8:55Speaker 1: lack of a running game here, as ken Walker has
- 8:57Speaker 1: been banged up in. Geno Smith was asked, is he
- 9:00Speaker 1: trying to create more game uh, game breaking downfield throws
- 9:04Speaker 1: over the last few weeks, trying to get more on
- 9:06Speaker 1: his shoulders, and he said no, He's still just taking
- 9:09Speaker 1: what the defense gives him. But he has had seven
- 9:11Speaker 1: games in a row where he has multiple touchdowns, pretty
- 9:15Speaker 1: long streak. But he is coming off his first game
- 9:17Speaker 1: of the season where he had multiple interceptions. He said
- 9:20Speaker 1: he has to maintain his aggressiveness but obviously minimize those mistakes.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said they have all the faith
- 9:29Speaker 1: in the world, all the faith in their hearts specifically,
- 9:31Speaker 1: is what he said about Geno Smith to continue to
- 9:34Speaker 1: play at that once time m v P level earlier
- 9:37Speaker 1: this season. Obviously, you're gonna look to continue to ride
- 9:39Speaker 1: the hot hand of Tyler Lockett, who has a touchdown
- 9:42Speaker 1: in six straight games, right the hot hand of DK Metcalf,
- 9:45Speaker 1: the birthday boy today, Happy birthday, d K. He's had
- 9:48Speaker 1: five and more catches in six straight games. So it
- 9:51Speaker 1: might come down to that pass game if they still
- 9:52Speaker 1: can't get that run game going for the Seahawks Andrew
- 9:55Speaker 1: it's DK Metcalf's birthday. It's also you know who else
- 9:58Speaker 1: has a birthday today? La Kwon Joe in research. Can't
- 10:01Speaker 1: see him on the screen, does a tremendous It was
- 10:05Speaker 1: all Mars birthday Sunday. It was my birthday on Sunday.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Had a great weekend. Yeah, all right, how about that.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You're watching NFL now, NFL Network. Some updates on the
- 10:21Speaker 1: quarterbacks here. Moments ago, Nathaniel Hackett said Russell Wilson will
- 10:25Speaker 1: not practice today. He's still in concussion protocol. If he
- 10:28Speaker 1: can't go, it's gonna be Bret ripping for the Broncos.
- 10:31Speaker 1: There were four oh five Eastern time kicks Sunday against
- 10:35Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals. Meantime, we are waiting for an official
- 10:38Speaker 1: injury designation here on brock Purdy. All these estimates well
- 10:43Speaker 1: that they're estimates. It's a short week, but he is
- 10:45Speaker 1: limited with an oblique and rib injury as we get
- 10:49Speaker 1: ready for the forty Niners and hopefully brock Purdy trying
- 10:51Speaker 1: to wrap up the NFC West tomorrow night in Seattle
- 10:56Speaker 1: against the Seahawks on Thursday night. Football Hall of Famer
- 10:59Speaker 1: Kurt Warner joints us every Wednesday's great to have him
- 11:02Speaker 1: in his quarterback room, Kurt, what do you what do
- 11:04Speaker 1: you think think about what brock Party did last week?
- 11:10Speaker 1: I liked what the young guy did. Andrew. Um, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 1: he didn't blow you out of the water. He didn't
- 11:15Speaker 1: put up staggering numbers, but made the throws and the
- 11:18Speaker 1: decisions he was supposed to make, made a couple of
- 11:20Speaker 1: big throws for touchdowns. I thought he did a great
- 11:23Speaker 1: job against pressure when he had pressure in his face,
- 11:26Speaker 1: being able to make some plays in those types of situations.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And you know, he does a really good job of
- 11:31Speaker 1: playing on schedule. Um, you know, not the biggest guy,
- 11:34Speaker 1: not the strongest arm, so a big part of his
- 11:36Speaker 1: game is knowing what he's looking at and getting the
- 11:38Speaker 1: ball out on time. And I thought he did those
- 11:40Speaker 1: things as well. And that's all you were looking for
- 11:43Speaker 1: with the team that's built around him. Make the layups,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you know, do what you're capable of doing. You don't
- 11:49Speaker 1: have to do anything extra, you don't have to try
- 11:51Speaker 1: to make a bunch of big plays. That's what he
- 11:53Speaker 1: did last week and they got a huge win because
- 11:55Speaker 1: of it. Huge win because of it. And if he
- 11:57Speaker 1: could lead his team to another win, assuming he is
- 12:00Speaker 1: healthy and plays tomorrow, night in prime time in Seattle
- 12:03Speaker 1: against the Seahawks team fighting for the post us and
- 12:05Speaker 1: I think we'd even be more impressed. Kurt, You're gonna
- 12:08Speaker 1: be on our air on Saturday. You and Rich called
- 12:10Speaker 1: the Browns and the Bengals right here on NFL Network. Now,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you've looked at a lot of Deshaun Watson tape. Um.
- 12:17Speaker 1: He made more throws last week, certainly than he did
- 12:20Speaker 1: week one. But but everything that you said about brock Purty, Um,
- 12:24Speaker 1: it seems to be the opposite with DeShawn. Like it's
- 12:27Speaker 1: not fast. It seems like it's an effort almost on
- 12:29Speaker 1: every drop back. Yeah, I mean, I don't think any
- 12:34Speaker 1: of us really understand what it's like to take seven
- 12:37Speaker 1: hundred days off between playing in the National Football League.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And you have to give respect to the game and
- 12:43Speaker 1: to the players on the other side and the schemes
- 12:45Speaker 1: that you're seeing that it can't be easy to get
- 12:47Speaker 1: behind center and be able to to see everything and
- 12:50Speaker 1: be acclimated to the speed of the game. And that's
- 12:53Speaker 1: really what I think I've seen in the first two weeks.
- 12:55Speaker 1: The first week, it just looked like the game was
- 12:57Speaker 1: going way too fast for him. Technique was off, even
- 13:00Speaker 1: when he was trying to buy time that the throws
- 13:02Speaker 1: were going into the ground. I thought he settled in
- 13:05Speaker 1: more this past week, and so yeah, I think that's
- 13:08Speaker 1: what you're hoping for, is uh, you know, you can
- 13:10Speaker 1: get some wins while he's getting comfortable again, and that
- 13:13Speaker 1: at some point here down the stretch, especially if they
- 13:16Speaker 1: can stay in this playoff mix, he can become the
- 13:19Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson that we all you know, saw in Houston
- 13:21Speaker 1: and the big playmaker that you brought him in to
- 13:24Speaker 1: be um. But but it's gonna take some time. I
- 13:26Speaker 1: think we all knew it was gonna take some time.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And right now there are some struggles going on in
- 13:31Speaker 1: their past game real quick here, and not to replay
- 13:34Speaker 1: the game, but there were throws that seemingly Jacoby Brissette
- 13:37Speaker 1: would have seen and would have made. Did you see
- 13:39Speaker 1: that too last week? Well? Yeah, I mean, first of all,
- 13:43Speaker 1: Jacoby played some really really good football when he was
- 13:46Speaker 1: in there, uh, starting caliber football when he was playing
- 13:50Speaker 1: for the Browns, um you know, So that's where it starts.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And so yeah, when you look at the last two weeks,
- 13:55Speaker 1: do I think Jacoby Brissette would have played better than
- 13:58Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson, no question. I think in both of the
- 14:00Speaker 1: games he would have played better. But you had to
- 14:03Speaker 1: know this going in. You can't just you know it's
- 14:06Speaker 1: not going to be seamless. So you've got to figure out, Hey,
- 14:08Speaker 1: we got to insert him. We gotta go through our
- 14:10Speaker 1: growing pains, and hopefully we can stay in this thing
- 14:12Speaker 1: long enough for him to get back up to speed
- 14:15Speaker 1: and and be the guy we want him to be
- 14:17Speaker 1: at some point this year. But yeah, I don't think
- 14:19Speaker 1: there's any question most people would think, uh, jacoble percent
- 14:22Speaker 1: would have played better these past couple of weeks than
- 14:24Speaker 1: de Shaun Watson. Not trying to suggest that every team
- 14:27Speaker 1: has with the forty Niners, have a speed at linebacker
- 14:29Speaker 1: to take away all those in breaking routes, or every
- 14:32Speaker 1: team can pull off what Brandon Staley's game plan was
- 14:35Speaker 1: this past Sunday. But Kurt on tape, do you think
- 14:37Speaker 1: that teams have caught up to the Dolphins offense? Well? Yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I mean caught up I think is a big word.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Do Do I think that there's a book out on
- 14:47Speaker 1: what the Miami Dolphins like to do? Yes, they like
- 14:51Speaker 1: to attack inside, you know, in between the numbers, Okay,
- 14:55Speaker 1: no secret. So now defenses are going to try to
- 14:57Speaker 1: counter that with doing things like uh, you know Bred
- 15:00Speaker 1: and Staley did this past week and jamming them with
- 15:02Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage and making it hard not free releases, uh,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know, doing some things where we're attacking the middle
- 15:08Speaker 1: of the field and trying to force throws outside. But
- 15:11Speaker 1: every good offense goes through this is that you do
- 15:14Speaker 1: things really really well. Defenses counter that, and then the
- 15:17Speaker 1: cat and mouse is, Okay, they're gonna do this, and
- 15:19Speaker 1: we've got to do that, and we've got to show
- 15:21Speaker 1: that we're capable of doing that. That's what Mike McDaniels,
- 15:25Speaker 1: That's what to a tongue volo are is gonna have
- 15:26Speaker 1: to do, is that they're gonna have to show their
- 15:28Speaker 1: capable of using the entire field and doing the things
- 15:31Speaker 1: that they did earlier in the season late in the season,
- 15:34Speaker 1: whether they can do what they want to do or
- 15:36Speaker 1: they've got to counter it all right and real quick.
- 15:38Speaker 1: In your backyard, do you fear that when Kyler Murray
- 15:42Speaker 1: comes back some of that electricity, Like, are we gonna
- 15:45Speaker 1: get the same Kyler Murray when he comes back next year? Yeah?
- 15:51Speaker 1: I think we all fear that, you know, when it's
- 15:53Speaker 1: such a huge part of your game, and not just
- 15:55Speaker 1: a huge part of your game, but but he is
- 15:57Speaker 1: such a unique you know, being that he's different than
- 16:02Speaker 1: most guys that we have playing the position. You know, him,
- 16:04Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. They're rare that they're the best athlete on
- 16:08Speaker 1: the field. They're they're the best athlete, um, you know,
- 16:10Speaker 1: going against the greatest athletes in the world. And so
- 16:13Speaker 1: do you have a kny injury like this, you wonder
- 16:15Speaker 1: will he be able to come back and do everything
- 16:19Speaker 1: that he was capable of doing before the injury, And
- 16:22Speaker 1: so I think that's a huge concern for everybody. The
- 16:25Speaker 1: great thing to me about Kyler Murray though, is he's
- 16:27Speaker 1: a very, very gifted passer and so he's not stuck
- 16:30Speaker 1: to just having to be an athlete. He can throw
- 16:32Speaker 1: the football extremely well. Also, all right, I misspoke earlier.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I said Brown's Bengals this week. Obviously that was last week.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You're getting Brown's Ravens coming up Saturday on NFL Network.
- 16:41Speaker 1: The only question here that people in l A want
- 16:44Speaker 1: to know in the news room want to o Kurd
- 16:46Speaker 1: is it's gonna be called mid twenties in Cleveland. Are
- 16:49Speaker 1: you going to bust out the puffy jacket? Does it
- 16:53Speaker 1: make its national television return on Saturday? Well, I tell
- 16:59Speaker 1: you what, Andrew, people are gonna have to tune in.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I've got two games to TV games in cold Weather
- 17:05Speaker 1: City is the next two weeks. So there's a pretty
- 17:07Speaker 1: good chance at the puppy Jacket makes an appearance. The
- 17:10Speaker 1: question is just will it be this week? Will it
- 17:13Speaker 1: be next week? I'm not sure I've really decided that yet,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but uh, but stay tuned because it will probably you know,
- 17:19Speaker 1: it'll probably go nuts on Twitter and it'll probably make
- 17:21Speaker 1: an appearance again. Could you get one for Rich too?
- 17:24Speaker 1: If you do it this week? Oh? That would that
- 17:27Speaker 1: would be fun? Do you think Rich would do? You
- 17:29Speaker 1: think Rich would go with it? You think he'd he
- 17:31Speaker 1: double up with me if we both had big silver
- 17:33Speaker 1: puppy jackets. I think he would do it. But I
- 17:35Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, it's such a wide jacket there, like,
- 17:37Speaker 1: could could you get that in the shot? Like it is?
- 17:40Speaker 1: It's two jackets do it? I am not sure if
- 17:45Speaker 1: two Michellan men can can fit into one shot, but
- 17:48Speaker 1: not Michigan man to give it a shot? We could
- 17:50Speaker 1: do a Michelin man and a Michigan man. There you go.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I like it. I like it. I like the quick
- 17:55Speaker 1: wit tune in Saturday for the Browns and the Ravens
- 17:59Speaker 1: right here part of the triple header. Thank you Curd
- 18:00Speaker 1: on the call coming up right here on NFL network.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Let's continue on NFL Now in a Wednesday edition. Getting
- 18:07Speaker 1: ready for those games week fifteen by going back to
- 18:11Speaker 1: the league meeting owners meet every December this year, that
- 18:15Speaker 1: December meeting is in Irving, Texas, where there is a
- 18:18Speaker 1: lot going on today, notably a conversation and I know
- 18:22Speaker 1: this one should be fun about possibly quite possibly making
- 18:28Speaker 1: roughing the passer reviewable. Let's go to Tom and Ian
- 18:34Speaker 1: and Judy Batista. That's just one of many things today
- 18:37Speaker 1: being discussed. Judy, Yeah, So Troy Vincent came in and
- 18:43Speaker 1: spoke to us about an hour ago, and he said
- 18:45Speaker 1: that in the room the owners discussed roughing the pastor
- 18:49Speaker 1: and whether there is an appetite for making it reviewable
- 18:52Speaker 1: by replay and how would that work. Would that mean
- 18:55Speaker 1: a coach has to throw the flag to challenge it
- 18:57Speaker 1: or would it have to come from New York? Also,
- 19:00Speaker 1: would there be an automatic objection element involved um Troy Vincent,
- 19:05Speaker 1: who lived through the past interference. I would use the
- 19:09Speaker 1: word to bacle when they made past interference reviewable for
- 19:13Speaker 1: one season and then got rid of it very quickly. Uh,
- 19:15Speaker 1: I would say, Troy is not going to be in
- 19:17Speaker 1: favor of making roughing the pastor reviewable, but he said, guys,
- 19:22Speaker 1: this is very likely to be coming up with the
- 19:24Speaker 1: Competition Committee in the off season. I might use the
- 19:26Speaker 1: word fiasco fiesco the kind of my favorite where it
- 19:30Speaker 1: didn't go well, and you know part of the reason
- 19:32Speaker 1: it didn't go well was essentially what they were doing.
- 19:35Speaker 1: This is something Tom I know the NFL does not
- 19:37Speaker 1: like to do, is taking one opinion and substituting it
- 19:40Speaker 1: for another opinion. Really, what you want is to be
- 19:43Speaker 1: able to just watch the play, have the officials make
- 19:46Speaker 1: a good, clean call and move on. You don't want
- 19:48Speaker 1: to get to a point where every single time and
- 19:50Speaker 1: replay you're doing the SLOWM. You're looking at a play
- 19:53Speaker 1: over and over and you could you could literally call
- 19:55Speaker 1: a foul on every place, something the NFL does not
- 19:58Speaker 1: want to go down. But at least they're going to
- 20:00Speaker 1: discuss this, and among other things, discuss also the possible
- 20:05Speaker 1: ability time of making roughing the pastor penalty subject to
- 20:09Speaker 1: an automatic objection. I know you well enough to know
- 20:13Speaker 1: that maybe you are not the greatest fan of all
- 20:15Speaker 1: time of this rule. So I will see the floor
- 20:17Speaker 1: to you and you tell us why it's a great idea.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I followed up with Troy Vincent and asked him because
- 20:23Speaker 1: he also included defenseless players in general, in addition to quarterbacks,
- 20:27Speaker 1: as potential that if there's a hit that is a
- 20:30Speaker 1: violation and penalty, it could trigger automatic objection. I asked him,
- 20:33Speaker 1: as a former player and as someone who's in the
- 20:36Speaker 1: room for the replays every week in New York, is
- 20:39Speaker 1: this feasible? Is it realistic that you could even enforce
- 20:42Speaker 1: this consistently enough given all the fallout that would take
- 20:46Speaker 1: place from that? And Troy was very upfront staying this
- 20:48Speaker 1: is his personal opinion, not speaking on behalf of the
- 20:50Speaker 1: league or the competition committee, but that he thinks this
- 20:53Speaker 1: would be difficult, does not think going down a path
- 20:56Speaker 1: of chasing perfection is something that's best for the NFL.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And I'm sure there are people sitting there say, well,
- 21:00Speaker 1: why wouldn't they want to get all the calls right.
- 21:02Speaker 1: They do want to get the calls right, but you
- 21:05Speaker 1: have different mechanics to this, and there are so many
- 21:08Speaker 1: unintended consequences. Just think about the piece of this with
- 21:11Speaker 1: the possibility of ejecting players. Okay, and I just ran
- 21:14Speaker 1: into one influential team executive in the lobby here and
- 21:17Speaker 1: asked him. His response was, don't worry about it. The
- 21:19Speaker 1: fight has just begun. It was a couple of orders
- 21:21Speaker 1: who brought this up in the meeting this morning. But
- 21:23Speaker 1: think about all the different things here. You only dressed
- 21:25Speaker 1: forty eight players on game day. If you start injecting people,
- 21:28Speaker 1: teams are gonna be short players. You're also gonna have
- 21:30Speaker 1: there's a lot of star pass rushers. Some of those
- 21:32Speaker 1: calls are not with the intent. It's just a really
- 21:35Speaker 1: bad looking play. You're gonna throw one of your best players,
- 21:38Speaker 1: the highest profile guys, out of a game. You've got
- 21:40Speaker 1: pace of play issues, which you mentioned, because if you eject,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you're gonna have to make the injections reviewable. And all
- 21:47Speaker 1: that's without even mentioning the fact that subjective calls. The
- 21:50Speaker 1: Competition Committee has always been opposed to having those reviewable
- 21:54Speaker 1: because they don't want to substitute one person judgment for another's.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The one time they went down that path was pass interference.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It was one of the biggest disasters rule wise that
- 22:02Speaker 1: the NFL has ever seen. It is virtual impossible to
- 22:06Speaker 1: think that this gets advanced here on any scale. But
- 22:09Speaker 1: of course, if enough owners and coaches rally behind it,
- 22:13Speaker 1: they can't get what they want. All right, Let's quickly
- 22:15Speaker 1: get to the other big topic, which was changing the
- 22:18Speaker 1: combine in the name of and this was Troy Vincent's word,
- 22:20Speaker 1: adding some dignity to the proceedings. They're going to change
- 22:24Speaker 1: the interview process of their changing the timing of some
- 22:27Speaker 1: of the workouts, and they want to change how the
- 22:30Speaker 1: medical information is shared, sort of reduced the number of
- 22:33Speaker 1: tests that guys have to go through in troyments and
- 22:35Speaker 1: made the point guys that this is a college player's
- 22:38Speaker 1: first exposure to the NFL and they would like to
- 22:40Speaker 1: make it a better experience for those guys. One example
- 22:43Speaker 1: of this judy is let's say a player had an
- 22:46Speaker 1: injury got an m r I a month before, instead
- 22:48Speaker 1: of forcing them to go through another m r I,
- 22:50Speaker 1: which is really not fun for anyone, Plus you have
- 22:52Speaker 1: to wait if multiple players have multiple memris. It takes forever.
- 22:57Speaker 1: We've seen this happen time and again at the combine,
- 22:59Speaker 1: they would just share the m r I from the
- 23:01Speaker 1: previous month. Medical information is being shared more often now
- 23:05Speaker 1: that I think we can ever remember, thanks in part
- 23:07Speaker 1: to the couple of COVID years. This does seem like
- 23:10Speaker 1: it's going to be a change for the better for
- 23:12Speaker 1: the players. One of the biggest complaints we heard from
- 23:14Speaker 1: agents on behalf of their clients in recent years was
- 23:17Speaker 1: with the drills in prime time. It was very long days.
- 23:20Speaker 1: You're performing late at night. Your body is not used
- 23:22Speaker 1: to doing that. Now, drills no longer in primetime, bench
- 23:25Speaker 1: press the day after the on field drills, all of
- 23:27Speaker 1: which are positives for the prospects. Andrew, we're going back
- 23:31Speaker 1: to you, and we do expect to hear from Commissioner
- 23:33Speaker 1: Roger Goodell coming up in a little bit, all right,
- 23:34Speaker 1: and we'll see that on NFL Network. By the way,
- 23:36Speaker 1: as we're discussing the making things reviewable, I have no
- 23:39Speaker 1: doubt Bobby Wagner was watching because the ram f Libacker
- 23:42Speaker 1: just tweeted during our conversation the NFL does not need
- 23:45Speaker 1: to oject players for hits like college. That's why I
- 23:48Speaker 1: stopped watching college a moment. I try to sleep at alone.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But a cheap calling, I'll be speaking the children. Then
- 24:11Speaker 1: they act like they hate facts. You can't throw a
- 24:14Speaker 1: football better than M D P M. I would might not.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I'm going to people question mark to exclamation part of this.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I think that might be Mike Renner's playlist there for
- 24:38Speaker 1: that music bringing us in Mike Runner from PFF Jransas
- 24:41Speaker 1: every Wednesday. Might good to see what we were talking
- 24:43Speaker 1: with A. J. Brown yesterday about his quarterback who seemingly
- 24:46Speaker 1: finds a new way to beat you every week and
- 24:48Speaker 1: right now is likely the favorite for m v P.
- 24:51Speaker 1: What are the PFF numbers tell you about how well
- 24:54Speaker 1: Jalen hurts his playing. Yeah, you hit the nail on
- 24:57Speaker 1: the head. There is that he can't beat you any
- 24:59Speaker 1: which way. Quick passing game, deep pass the game, intermediate
- 25:02Speaker 1: passing game. With his legs design runs. It really is
- 25:05Speaker 1: a master class and quarterback development. And you know, it's
- 25:08Speaker 1: a different player than we saw last year. And I
- 25:10Speaker 1: think the biggest thing that gets lost is how impactful
- 25:13Speaker 1: he is to the run game. You know he has
- 25:15Speaker 1: he leaves the league in passer rating yes, but you
- 25:16Speaker 1: can't really compare apples to apples with him with someone
- 25:19Speaker 1: like Patrick Mahomes, because he turns this running game into
- 25:22Speaker 1: a different animal altogether. He leads the NFL at the
- 25:25Speaker 1: quarterback esition with nine design runs. He's averaging point three
- 25:28Speaker 1: on seven e p a per rush on those. Patrock
- 25:31Speaker 1: Homes is averaging point three to one e pa per
- 25:33Speaker 1: drop back this season, So he has turned their running
- 25:35Speaker 1: game into a drop back passing game. With how efficient
- 25:37Speaker 1: it is, it is just rare to see a quarterback
- 25:40Speaker 1: do such thing. It's over reminiscent of Lamar Jackson back
- 25:42Speaker 1: in nine. Let's give some credit to Trevor Lawrence as well.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Has n't thrown an interception since October. October, what about
- 25:48Speaker 1: a deeper dive on his numbers. Yeah, he's the highest
- 25:52Speaker 1: second highest grade quarterback in the NFL since Week nine
- 25:55Speaker 1: per PFF Summers, behind only Joe Burrow. Pretty good company
- 25:58Speaker 1: to keep. And it's not just he's taken laffs. He
- 26:01Speaker 1: is attacking down the football field. He's the guy we
- 26:04Speaker 1: saw back get Clemson a ninety eight point seven PF
- 26:07Speaker 1: passing grade when targeting ten plus yards down the field
- 26:10Speaker 1: over that span. Far and away the highest in the NFL.
- 26:13Speaker 1: It's gone thirty six or fifty three six or six
- 26:15Speaker 1: four yards like he has been that downfield pass or
- 26:18Speaker 1: that was promised, and he's doing it with really not
- 26:20Speaker 1: downfield passing weapons, which is a testament to just how
- 26:23Speaker 1: good he's been. He doesn't have the Jamaar Chases of
- 26:24Speaker 1: the world to Justin Jefferson's He's kind of doing it
- 26:27Speaker 1: to a lot of guys there. So hats off to
- 26:28Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence. He's arrived. What about in New York, Mike,
- 26:31Speaker 1: where the Jets and Giants have both seemingly come back
- 26:34Speaker 1: to Earth, go under the hood with what their numbers show. Yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 1: I was on here, I believe about a month ago
- 26:40Speaker 1: saying that the Giants are kind of just figuring it out,
- 26:43Speaker 1: figuring out ways to win. But ultimately, in the NFL,
- 26:46Speaker 1: you have to have the guys at some point when
- 26:49Speaker 1: you go up against the Eagles of the world the
- 26:50Speaker 1: Cowboys of the world. So there's seven wins this season,
- 26:53Speaker 1: have none have come by more than seven points. They
- 26:56Speaker 1: have been able to grind out these close games, but
- 26:58Speaker 1: it's not really a sustainable path to success. So I
- 27:01Speaker 1: think the talent level there in New York is finally
- 27:03Speaker 1: bearing out. As you see their day Jones just a
- 27:05Speaker 1: below average quarterback. That's probably what you're gonna get. On
- 27:08Speaker 1: the flip side of things, though, the other New York team,
- 27:10Speaker 1: the Jets, I still believe, you know, they lost to
- 27:12Speaker 1: two really good teams, and the Vikings and the build
- 27:14Speaker 1: these Bills these past two weeks. Mike White looks like
- 27:16Speaker 1: a legitimate upgrade over what they had at quarterback in
- 27:19Speaker 1: Zach Wilson. And you still have impact players. You've got
- 27:21Speaker 1: Garret Wilson bawling out like a number one receiver. Sauce
- 27:24Speaker 1: Gardner right there, maybe the best quarterback in the NFL
- 27:27Speaker 1: is the highest graded one, at least with his play
- 27:29Speaker 1: this season, and Quinn Williams breakout year, highest grader run
- 27:32Speaker 1: defender at defensive tackle. Like they have the guys to
- 27:34Speaker 1: make game changing plays. I still think the Jets make players.
- 27:37Speaker 1: The Jets have lost four out of six, but they
- 27:39Speaker 1: could take take a huge step back towards the postseason
- 27:42Speaker 1: with the victory this coming Sunday against the upstart Lions.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Download the PFF app or to go to PF dot
- 27:48Speaker 1: com for more analysis on those two teams. Than All
