- 0:00What's up y'all? You're listening to the extra
- 0:02point college football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnage
- 0:05wind, as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:08Daniel on today's episode. Look, we've got we've got our
- 0:12official hire of this coaching carousel, James Franklin at
- 0:15Virginia Tech. We're going to talk about it.
- 0:17Lane Kiffin. Look, he he he's made it's like
- 0:20the final round of the bachelor. Which team gets his rose?
- 0:24We're going to talk about it. We've got some some questions
- 0:28after this past weekend, updated College Football Playoff
- 0:33predictions because we got to keep updating it.
- 0:35As you know, we only got a few weeks of this left.
- 0:38Our updated XPR. We've got updated college well
- 0:41playoff rankings, 3U matchups, 3 more games we're watching, 4
- 0:46picks against the spread, all on this episode.
- 0:49Daniel only only two more weeks of the regular season left.
- 0:53We only get a few more of these podcasts.
- 0:55Man, I'm I'm locked in ready to enjoy it.
- 0:57They cling to it, man. Let's hold on tight to these
- 1:01last couple weeks. Next week's show.
- 1:05I mean, it's going to be, we're talking rivalry weekend, which,
- 1:10you know, rivalry weekend number one for me #2 is Labor Day.
- 1:15So it's like it's really it's, it matters and it's every game
- 1:20is important, whether it's CFP related or not, every game is
- 1:24important. But you could say that about all
- 1:25of college football. But it's no better time.
- 1:28It's not embodied any better time than rivalry weekend
- 1:32starting with Thanksgiving. I think Navy plays on
- 1:35Thanksgiving this year. So for America, I keep that in
- 1:38mind. So let's do this.
- 1:41Good to know, Daniel. We've got our first tire, James
- 1:46Franklin to Virginia Tech. We've done this before.
- 1:50I heard someone else doing it and I'm like, man, did they did
- 1:53they listen to the extra point? I, I didn't prep you with this,
- 1:57but we, we grade these hires on single, double, triple home run,
- 2:02which we've done here on the extra point before.
- 2:05And look, there's no, you know that there's no rhyme or reason
- 2:09to why coaching searches work. This is all I guess on our part,
- 2:11obviously, but if you had to grade this coaching hire,
- 2:15Daniel, what are you given this coaching hire?
- 2:17I mean, this is, this is a home run for Virginia Tech.
- 2:20Yes, yes. I think that they, James
- 2:24Franklin should have and could have been tops on the list from
- 2:27a lot of jobs that are out there that's weren't being talked
- 2:30about. I think Arkansas, there's a lot
- 2:33of their fan base that thought he may have been coming to them.
- 2:37And I was reading some of their message boards and there was
- 2:40some crash outs, which that's just nature of the beast.
- 2:44But I think he made a good decision in a place that he can
- 2:47win. He's financially secure.
- 2:50So there if there's like an up and coming coach taking a first
- 2:53time job or taking a job, you might wait for something that is
- 2:56more secure with like a SEC or Big 10 school.
- 3:00But fit wise, I think this is a great fit for him and a great
- 3:03fit for the school. Yeah, 10 out of 10.
- 3:06Home run, home run, home run. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:10You got a coach that coached in the semi final game last year as
- 3:16your head coach heading into next year and you put him in the
- 3:20ACC where instead of Combino before and being in the same
- 3:24division as Ohio State and Michigan, he's now in the ACC.
- 3:30That's going to have a championship game of some
- 3:32combination of like Virginia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, SMU.
- 3:38Like like what? What school do you walk into the
- 3:40ACC next year saying we can't beat them in year 1 in year 1,
- 3:46Miami's on the schedule next year on the road.
- 3:48Clemson's on the schedule on the road.
- 3:49But I think they both those schools have proven that anybody
- 3:53can beat them. Talent cap doesn't matter
- 3:54apparently. So this is a home run to me.
- 3:57I hope it works out. This is the kind of coach
- 3:59Virginia Tech needs and the fact that he's available for your
- 4:02program. And I think geography too,
- 4:05right? He's been in the Midwest, like
- 4:08in Pennsylvania for 10 years, recruiting out of Ohio, out of
- 4:13Kentucky, out of New Jersey, out of the DMV.
- 4:17You put him into Virginia, same recruiting base.
- 4:21So I'm curious to see the staff he builds.
- 4:24And again, like Virginia Tech has openly said, like they
- 4:27didn't give Brent Pry, again, former Franklin assistant, by
- 4:30the way, Brent Pry. They didn't give him the
- 4:32resources he needed to be successful.
- 4:35It sounds like that's one thing Franklin needed guarantee of
- 4:38before he took the job was financial guarantees.
- 4:42Sounds like Virginia Tech's going to spend like a contender
- 4:45in the ACC. So yeah, I think this is a home
- 4:47run. James Franklin's a very good
- 4:50football coach. Bottom line, I understand why
- 4:53Penn State fired him partially, but they just got a very good
- 4:57football coach. And I don't know who, I don't
- 4:59know who Penn State's going to hire.
- 5:01I don't know if they're going to hire someone who I think is a
- 5:03guarantee better coach than James Franklin.
- 5:06I think that's the. It feels kind of like when
- 5:08Auburn moved on from Gus Malzahn.
- 5:10Like you can see that. You can see why he got fired,
- 5:13and maybe he wasn't the greatest coach in the world at that time,
- 5:16or maybe it wasn't the right fit or whatever.
- 5:19You could make the argument for why he got fired, but he was a
- 5:22floor raiser and there's a chance that you don't hire the
- 5:26right guy. That's right.
- 5:28Some other good stuff. I mean, he was a coach at in
- 5:31late 90s in James Madison and then early 2000s in Maryland
- 5:35where he was actually the recruiting coordinator for four
- 5:38years. So you think about, you talk
- 5:40about the DMV in that area where there's just a very rich talent
- 5:43base. Obviously he's been recruiting
- 5:45that area for a long time, but he just, there's some deep
- 5:48relationships in that area. You know, second, he had another
- 5:51stint at Maryland and of course his or two, two more stints at
- 5:55Maryland. So he's had a lot of time
- 5:58recruiting that part of the country.
- 5:59So I think this is great. Virginia, Virginia Tech It was a
- 6:04great job. I love it.
- 6:05Home run, hire someone who's waiting to either be hired or
- 6:10extended and given a new contract.
- 6:13Lane Kiffin making the news this week.
- 6:15He I mean, look, this is the kind of college football that I
- 6:20didn't think we had any more by chance this the message board
- 6:24culture. And like flight tracking was a
- 6:27big thing like mid 2000s and like early 20 tens of like, you
- 6:32know, look at this, you know, this tail number that's the
- 6:35university plane flying from, you know, Lubbock to Starkville.
- 6:40And look at this, a lot of this tail numbers have come private
- 6:44now. So flight tracking kind of gone
- 6:46away and any flight tracking now is a little silly until what's
- 6:50that? LSU hasn't made their tail
- 6:52number private? And all things go on the the,
- 6:57the Bengal tiger as all of a sudden, you know, someone tells
- 7:00them, hey, there's going to be a plane landing here soon.
- 7:03And he's like, I got my lunch break.
- 7:05I'm going to get a potato and go sit in the bushes and see what I
- 7:08can do with my long lens camera. And by God, he did.
- 7:11And out gets Lane Kiffin's family.
- 7:13So then it gets confirmed by, you know, the LSU riders that
- 7:17yes, Lane Kiffin's family is in Baton Rouge on Monday.
- 7:20And by the way, they were in Gainesville yesterday and no one
- 7:22knew. Looking at looking at schools
- 7:24and houses or whatnot, I've come to find out this happens quite
- 7:28often and that this is not the only family that has taken
- 7:31visits to other cities this coaching cycle.
- 7:34It's just Lane is the most public.
- 7:36So he's the one that. Well, he's the hottest thing.
- 7:38He's the one that everybody wants.
- 7:40He's at the two most high profile jobs right now.
- 7:43Yeah, exactly. He's the number one name for the
- 7:45two best jobs open right now there.
- 7:46There's your. Yeah.
- 7:48So yeah, this is. I don't know what he's going to
- 7:51do, you know, And then he's like, there's been no ultimatum.
- 7:53I'm like, sure, there's been no ultimatum.
- 7:54Has there been a handshake agreement saying you have you
- 7:57need to let us know by the Egg Bowl?
- 7:59Probably. But you know, Daniel, that
- 8:02that's not an ultimatum. Was as Linn Kiffin said on
- 8:04McAfee. So this is interesting, I think,
- 8:08I think it confirms that everyone thought, which is, hey,
- 8:10let you know #1 Lane is the target for both of these
- 8:14schools, obviously. And Lane is considering and
- 8:17weighing his options as he should.
- 8:19And you know, we read a great Twitter thread, not from anyone
- 8:23who knows anything but a best guess, which made a lot of
- 8:25sense. Just saying, hey, like to sum it
- 8:29up, Lane is considering these. He was serious about it being a
- 8:34family thing at Ole Miss. And so he's not going to do this
- 8:37without family approval. So he's seeing what his family
- 8:40thinks because I, I do think his family is going to have a lot of
- 8:43input into this decision. I don't think he's lying at all
- 8:47about that. So if the families want to make
- 8:50a move, I think Lane's want to make a move.
- 8:52I also think he means that when he says he's happy, it'll miss.
- 8:55I just think he's looking internally.
- 8:57We we talked about this, Daniel, does Lane KIF want to win a
- 8:59national championship and can he do that at Ole Miss?
- 9:02I think now it's a question versus a few years ago, I just I
- 9:05would have said an absolute no. I still think it's an uphill
- 9:09battle. I don't think it's an uphill
- 9:11battle at LSU or Florida. It's an uphill battle anywhere.
- 9:14But you know what I mean? It is it is easier access at LSU
- 9:16or Florida just because of resources.
- 9:18So. But I love this.
- 9:19It's fun. This is what makes college
- 9:21football fun. Shout out to all things Go.
- 9:23And yeah, I am. I'm curious if we get word of an
- 9:27announcement before for the Egg Bowl next week on Black Friday.
- 9:32Yeah, it's common. I mean, we'll see.
- 9:35It's one of these things where it's like he's he would be doing
- 9:38a disservice to not kick the tires and see what's going on
- 9:41with these. So and you also understand Ole
- 9:44misses side of it if like they don't want to be his side piece
- 9:49while he's looking elsewhere. So like they want to know they
- 9:53want to be competitive and get a coach if they have to.
- 9:56It's just the one thing I'm worried about is these players
- 9:59on this team this year, This is a special team.
- 10:03I would hate for this to supersede all of that and for
- 10:06him to go in, you know, coaches go in distracted to playoff
- 10:09games or bowl games or whatever all the time.
- 10:12But for it to be a playoff and like this very special season
- 10:17from Ole Miss. And if he was to go in
- 10:20completely, you know, hired by another school, would they allow
- 10:24him to still coach the bowl game or, you know, to to try to win
- 10:27this year? Would they, you know, say, OK,
- 10:31we're going to go interim coach. There's so many ways they could
- 10:34go. You just don't want these kids
- 10:36to suffer like they've had a great year, like they let's
- 10:40let's finish it out strong for them somehow, because you just
- 10:44don't get this opportunity every single year, especially
- 10:47somewhere I don't miss, you know, so.
- 10:50Pate said this and I thought it hit the nail on the head,
- 10:53Daniel. This is a consequence of the
- 10:56wrong people having their hands in the wheel of college
- 10:58football. This is the consequence of the
- 11:00calendar being a complete mess because the NFL has this figured
- 11:07out. You don't have a deadline of if
- 11:10we don't hire a coach before the end of the season, you know,
- 11:14because the draft happens to be between weeks 16 and 17, It's
- 11:18like, well, of course not. The draft is four months after
- 11:21the season ends or two months after the season ends and the
- 11:24combines a month before that. It's we need to get the college
- 11:28football schedule figured out because this could be better for
- 11:31all parties where Lane does not have to even consider this
- 11:34before seasons end, which honors #1 his contract and #2 just his
- 11:40relationship and like, commitment to these kids and
- 11:43these players in the school and the fans they're at Ole Miss.
- 11:47They could match it up with the like also NFL in the sense that
- 11:54the NFL coaching search. What if an NFL coach opening?
- 11:59What if they go hire somebody from college?
- 12:01Well then, that school starting over in January, or whenever
- 12:05this is, anyways. The college football calendar is
- 12:07broken. It desperately needs to get
- 12:10fixed. College football desperately
- 12:12needs the right people with their hands on the wheel.
- 12:16And again, I mean, look, I don't have the perfect calendar at the
- 12:19top of my head, but we've got to have national signing day be
- 12:22after the season ends. We've got to have the portal
- 12:25window be after the season ends, but somehow before spring
- 12:29football begins. And that's going to, that's
- 12:32going to like schools are going to have to adjust the academic
- 12:36calendar to help match the football calendar, which to me
- 12:38is not impossible and I don't think we're far away from.
- 12:41But we still need the right people with their hands on the
- 12:42wheel for the schedule to get perfect.
- 12:44I agree, Daniel, 2 questions we have moving forward after this
- 12:49past weekend. What's your first one?
- 12:51Much like you know James Franklin was the first domino to
- 12:56fall as far as the head coaching hire, Lane Kiff may be the most
- 13:00important domino to fall as far as coaching carousel.
- 13:03My questions about Alabama and about the CFP, Are they the
- 13:07biggest domino in the CFP remaining?
- 13:12My point is they could get into the SEC championship game.
- 13:16Of course, if they just win against Auburn, they could win
- 13:20it all. You know, as far as winning that
- 13:21game and getting to the playoff and having even maybe a bye week
- 13:24with two losses. That's possible if you're an SEC
- 13:26champion, if you, you know, if you don't do that, let's say you
- 13:31go to the SEC championship game but lose, you could knock out
- 13:34other at large bids potentially by being a, you know, 11 or
- 13:3910:00 and 10:00 and 3:00 because you go 10 and two regular
- 13:42season, you lose the SEC championship.
- 13:44But ten and three, you could really complicate things for
- 13:48other teams that are at large bids.
- 13:50And then if they just lose to Auburn, there's a chance they're
- 13:54left out altogether. This the first night game in
- 13:57Jordan Hare Stadium for the Iron Bowl since 2007.
- 14:01So it's crazy that that's the case, but I just feel like
- 14:05there's so much right, Like Alabama could reach the pinnacle
- 14:09still and fall completely out, whereas before, if they would
- 14:14have just beaten Oklahoma, I think that there's a small
- 14:17window of OK, it just depends on what seed they're going to be.
- 14:20But they could be all the way from the very top to the one
- 14:23that's just watching from from. Home yeah, bam is an interesting
- 14:26case. I mean they they obviously
- 14:28control their own destiny still, but I I am curious to see where
- 14:30they where they fall by seasons. Then you know my first question
- 14:36is I'm going to save that one. Has Georgia turned in the Death
- 14:40Star Georgia, or are we seeing a second team that looks like they
- 14:46could be dominant the rest of the way and win it all?
- 14:50And it reminds me, Daniel, it happened later for Ohio State
- 14:54last year, but it reminds me of Ohio State last year because we
- 14:58have to remember Ohio State did lose the last game of the season
- 15:00to Michigan, but then they came into the playoff.
- 15:03And it's like everything we said about the potential of that team
- 15:06clicked from that first game against or first game against
- 15:10Tennessee. It was turned up to level 11 and
- 15:13they rode that the rest of the way to a championship.
- 15:16And what we, we've said this year on this podcast that teams,
- 15:21the teams that are going to contend for championships, start
- 15:24to play their best ball in November.
- 15:25And you know, I like looking at the the trajectory of teams
- 15:28throughout the year of which teams are running out of gas,
- 15:32You know, which teams are more dominating and starting to play
- 15:35closer games, Which teams dominated Week 1 and now they're
- 15:38starting to lose games. Which teams Daniel played a lot
- 15:42of 1 score games and now has played two dominant games
- 15:46against conference opponents, winning by multiple possessions.
- 15:49And George has done that. I look at Georgia Daniel now and
- 15:52I'm trying not to have an overreaction in one week.
- 15:54This has been building. But in November they've played
- 15:58three very good football games and that they it just eye test
- 16:01wise Daniel, they look like a very complete football team
- 16:05right now. And so you match that with with
- 16:09the results through a one loss team.
- 16:10They've got Charlotte this week, They've got Tech the end of the
- 16:12year. They will wait and see on the
- 16:14SEC championship. They need some stuff to happen
- 16:18for them to get in. Daniel, this is a team.
- 16:21It's peaking at the right time. And as as I start to project and
- 16:24say who can win a championship, Georgia is firmly in that
- 16:27conversation. They're starting to look like
- 16:29Georgia. I think that's my big take away
- 16:31this week. And have they turned into Death
- 16:33Star Georgia? We will see.
- 16:35Yeah, that one's interesting. I like I like what you said
- 16:39about how it's there's some teams that you know, may have
- 16:44blown teams out of beginning and playing closer games.
- 16:47Now it is a trend and you've got to you know, some teams are just
- 16:52limping to the finish line just trying to get to the end.
- 16:55And it seems like Georgia wants to play everybody now.
- 16:59They Kirby, the way he talked after the game, kind of seemed
- 17:04like he's calling a shot. Kind of seemed like he's likes
- 17:06his team, he's confident in his team, he's ready to go.
- 17:10If you're a football guy, I wish I had it ready to to play, just
- 17:13go watch. Kirby's press conference
- 17:15Saturday was talking about post game.
- 17:17We like yeah, we like to hit people and that they like to
- 17:21take people to the water. They like down and dirty, Yeah,
- 17:23to get to. Get it was an all timer.
- 17:25He had several clips from that presser.
- 17:28He. Did and look to get this.
- 17:31This is something Samon did so well to get these players.
- 17:34And look, they're probably getting paid well then they're
- 17:36all getting paid very well now. George is not not playing guys.
- 17:39George is paying guys. They're one of the biggest
- 17:42spenders still. But you've got to be bought into
- 17:45Kirby's culture to get these kids to care about physicality
- 17:48and to care about hitting. It's a skill.
- 17:50Kirby's done it. They're hitting people.
- 17:53And again, that's why we're getting into November and
- 17:57they're dominating the fourth quarter, Daniel, because teams
- 17:59can't hang for 60 full minutes, which we saw early on in the
- 18:04season with Georgia. Now, can can you hang for 15 to
- 18:0817 games and play at a high level?
- 18:11Ohio State was able to do that last year, right?
- 18:13Like they were able to go the full 17 when one other teams
- 18:16couldn't. Georgia looks like a team that
- 18:19can do that this year as as does a few others.
- 18:21But George is firmly in that conversation, whereas a month
- 18:25ago, I would not have really considered Georgia to be a title
- 18:28contender firmly in the playoff conversation.
- 18:31But now I'm firmly putting George in that they're entitled
- 18:34contender mode is kind of my answer to my own question.
- 18:37So I'm excited to see how that scales the rest of the way.
- 18:41Daniel, what's your second question?
- 18:43My second question is, is or I guess what is most likely for
- 18:47the ACC championship game? There are so many scenarios and
- 18:51I think that what I was talking about, you know, Alabama being
- 18:54biggest domino to fall, I think this may be like the biggest
- 18:57wild card as far as who is going to represent the ACC and the
- 19:02CFP. Are they going to get 2 teams in
- 19:05me? And you have both been on the
- 19:06hey, there's a one team conference.
- 19:08But you know, it's crazy to Georgia Tech, all they have to
- 19:12do if they beat Pitt, they're in Virginia.
- 19:16If they beat Virginia Tech, that's your championship.
- 19:19But Virginia also gets in if SMU loses to Louisville or
- 19:23California or if Pitt loses to Georgia Tech or Miami.
- 19:27That's that's their second scenario.
- 19:29Miami has to have like 8 things happen Pit of course they need
- 19:33to beat Tech in Miami and then they need SMU to lose.
- 19:37They need Virginia to beat Virginia Tech.
- 19:39There's a lot of list of things to happen.
- 19:41So SMU still has a shot, which is crazy.
- 19:43So I think Miami could still make the CFP as a 10 and two
- 19:48team. If you know, I don't think that
- 19:51they have a shot personally because of all of the things
- 19:54that have to happen for them. I don't think they have a shot
- 19:56to make the ACC championship game and get as an automatic
- 20:01qualifier. So I think the ACC gets their
- 20:04champion in and then if if Miami finishes out ten and two think
- 20:08they've got a shot. I've got my ACC champ in our
- 20:11playoff predictions, which we're about to get to which I did.
- 20:14I go, I went to if you got AB ball.nothing.notnothing.net, you
- 20:20can play this out for yourself. You can pick the winner of each
- 20:22game and hit calculate standings in it runs all of it for you.
- 20:26So that's how I get my match up and winner.
- 20:29SMU is fairly straightforward. I mean, Virginia's is
- 20:32straightforward, Georgia, Texas straightforward.
- 20:34SMU needs like one thing like Georgia Tech and Virginia
- 20:36controller and destiny. SMU just needs one of them to
- 20:40lose a game. And then after that it gets
- 20:43really wonky after that. OK, Daniel, my second question,
- 20:48we can we can start to get in the playoff picks here.
- 20:51It's head to head going to matter.
- 20:53And when is it going to matter when it comes to selecting the
- 20:56final playoff? Because last night I saw a clip
- 21:01of the whoever the new chairman is now saying.
- 21:04And remember, like head to And so for example, Miami and Notre
- 21:16Dame both have two losses. Notre Dame started off 8 spots
- 21:21ahead of Miami last week they were 5 this week, they're four.
- 21:24Now. Has Miami done anything
- 21:26impressive in those weeks? No, I think they're correcting a
- 21:28mistake slowly but surely. So we're oh, now they're three
- 21:32spots ahead. Well, now we're going to
- 21:33consider head to And the other one is that I
- 21:47think it's going to matter. Oklahoma, Michigan, let's just
- 21:52have it on my playoff because this is where it comes up.
- 21:54I tweeted or I tweeted, I sent this to our group chat with some
- 21:57buddies and I have two spots left for 4/10 and two teams.
- 22:02Of course, this isn't going to really happen because it's
- 22:03college football and craziness is going to ensue in the next
- 22:06two weeks. But of course.
- 22:08But here's my playoff. I've got Indiana at 1:13 or no
- 22:12Big 10 champs, obviously. Alabama ACC champs 11 and two at
- 22:17the two seed Texas A&M with the three seed 12 and one SEC runner
- 22:22up. Four seed Texas Tech 12 and one
- 22:28Big 12 champs, all right. Five seed Georgia 11 and one.
- 22:33Six seed Ole Miss 11 and one pretty straightforward. 7 seed
- 22:38Oregon 11 and 1 lot 11 and one seems here. 8 seed Ohio State,
- 22:4411 and one. All right, remember Daniel,
- 22:48we're picking Michigan, all right, That's right, that's
- 22:50right. You said it made a pack.
- 22:51We're picking this show, 11 and one.
- 22:53Obviously Michigan's going to beat him.
- 22:54All right, let me go. The 12 seed North Texas out of
- 22:57the American 11 seed ACC Champ SMUI have them winning, all
- 23:03right? I've been getting in and winning
- 23:05the conference. I've got 2 spots left, Daniel.
- 23:07I've got 4-10 and two teams. And This is why I asked.
- 23:09The question is, I've got 10 and 2 Notre Dame, 10 and two Miami,
- 23:1510 and two Oklahoma, ten and two Michigan, and you've got Notre
- 23:21Dame, who will have had wins against Miami, obviously head to
- 23:25head, and also 12 and one. Excuse me, No, they lost to XXA
- 23:30and M sorry. So what's Notre Dame signature?
- 23:33We lost to Miami. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:36Yeah, Or sorry, sorry, sorry. I had the I'm like, they lost to
- 23:38A&M and Miami. Those are their two losses.
- 23:42Signature one will have been USC who was like 9.
- 23:45Three. You've got Miami who beat Notre
- 23:50Dame straight up who's still 4 spots behind them because their
- 23:54two losses are quote UN quote worst losses.
- 23:57Oklahoma tended to with a win over SEC champion Bama.
- 24:00Michigan tended to with a win over.
- 24:03Ohio State. You know, Ohio State at the end
- 24:05of the year who would have been the committee's number one team
- 24:07to that point. Then I've gone with three
- 24:09different combinations here. I might change it now.
- 24:11I think Oklahoma's in regard I think 10 and two Oklahoma is in.
- 24:16They have a win over Michigan with that.
- 24:18Then here comes the issue. You either put in Notre Dame or
- 24:21Miami, which of those two at that point in the season, this
- 24:25is for one spot, Daniel. This is for this one seed.
- 24:27Do you put in my you have to put in Miami at that point they one
- 24:31head to head or do you say the heck with it?
- 24:34Both are out. Michigan's in they beat Ohio
- 24:36State. They're tended to.
- 24:38So you only have a Oklahoma and Michigan in which is what I have
- 24:41and now you know that head to head Oklahoma beat them.
- 24:45They're ahead of them in the seeding and they're both in the
- 24:47playoff and then you leave one of the head to head matchups out
- 24:50completely. You solve your own problem.
- 24:52Don't have to worry about who's ahead of who.
- 24:54They're both out. Look this we're going to be
- 24:57wrong with these predictions. There's way too many one and two
- 25:00lost teams in here. I got a sneaky feeling.
- 25:03Yeah, what do you do with nine and three?
- 25:04Texas, you got to put. I'm just kidding.
- 25:06Well, in this scenario, they're 8:00 and 4:00 because A&M wins.
- 25:09Yeah, because A&M beats him. I got.
- 25:11You come back and forth who's going to win that game, but as
- 25:14of right now, that's who I've got.
- 25:16Yeah, that's why I hope that the playoff.
- 25:18What about you? I've got Ohio State #1
- 25:23undefeated. I know we're actually going to
- 25:25pick them to lose. I'm just these are hypothetical.
- 25:29Come on. Ohio State, well, I wanted to
- 25:31keep the same theme as last week.
- 25:33I was like, I don't want to take, you know, you, you fact
- 25:35that you baked in the actual loss.
- 25:38I'm just, you know, whatever. Ohio State #1 hypothetically
- 25:44undefeated Big 10 champ. The loser of that game, Indiana,
- 25:48is number 2. Surprisingly, I have Alabama is
- 25:52#3 because they win the SEC championship, but they've got 2
- 25:58losses, so I felt like they might get stuck in 3 instead of
- 26:032. And then I have #4 is Texas A&M
- 26:10the loser of the FCC championship?
- 26:135 is Georgia, 11 and 1/6 is Texas Tech Big 12 champ, 7
- 26:21Oregon 11 and 18 Ole Miss 11 and 1 Notre Dame and number 9:10 and
- 26:312:00 and then I have Miami at 10:10 and 2:00 at ACC champion
- 26:40Pittsburgh. I kept it the same because I
- 26:43feel like after last week, the whole Notre Dame thing, he had
- 26:47us really confused. And I, I'm curious, I'm so this
- 26:51Georgia Tech pits game. So glad we're picking it this
- 26:54week. I'm so curious what's going to
- 26:56happen. I just kept pit in there.
- 26:58I may even pick Georgia Tech in the game when we get later.
- 27:01I'm still like, I'm enamored with Pittsburgh and then Tulane.
- 27:04I mean, they're finally getting some love from the CFP.
- 27:07So I figured I would just keep them in there for me as the
- 27:12Group of Six highest rated champion.
- 27:14So that's my 12. OK, I love it.
- 27:17We'll both be wrong, of course. Especially me, I don't have.
- 27:23I have a higher state undefeated.
- 27:24They're going to lose to Michigan.
- 27:26They're going to lose to Michigan.
- 27:27So yeah, we'll fix that one by you by year's end.
- 27:29You know, after they lose, we'll have a, we'll have a better
- 27:31playoff prediction, all right? After Selection Sunday, we'll
- 27:33have a great playoff prediction. We'll have a good one if you
- 27:38are. Update, Daniel.
- 27:39There's a couple teams I wanted to address.
- 27:41Miami was one. We've got them at 11, which is
- 27:44still behind Notre Dame but closer.
- 27:46And there was one more Dane. I should have written this down.
- 27:49This is terrible podcasting. There's one more team I wanted
- 27:52to address as far as where they are Texas at 16 for us in the in
- 27:56the playoff. I know they were I think one
- 27:58spot lower than that. We we have Georgia up at 3:00.
- 28:01I think that's interesting. A&M actually below Oregon down
- 28:04at 5. I don't I don't think their
- 28:05resume is that bad. Power ranking for Georgia is
- 28:09like throttled right now on several the power rankings we
- 28:11used to help make our make our ranking.
- 28:14Bama down to date. I was curious how far they were
- 28:16going to fall in our XPR Texas Tech at 7:00.
- 28:21So Bama, the highest two loss team, they're actually tie tie
- 28:26with Notre Dame on points. But any major takeaways from
- 28:29RXPR or the the CFP rankings from Tuesday night?
- 28:35Yeah, I'm just concerned. I mean, I, I'm not an Alabama
- 28:39fan, but as a college football fan and being fair, I'm, I'm
- 28:46just curious, like, you know, with Alabama's wins that they've
- 28:49had it just to me, it's like, are they going, is the CFP
- 28:53committee just always going to punish you for having a couple
- 28:57of losses versus like, you know, all of your great wins?
- 29:01I get you. You shouldn't put like a four
- 29:03loss team in, but a two loss team, again, they're not putting
- 29:08Alabama out, but they've got them at 10.
- 29:10And so if certain things were to happen, I, I'm concerned for
- 29:15Alabama to make the playoff. You know, if they were, if they
- 29:18were, like I mentioned before, they would potentially lose to
- 29:21Auburn be 9 and three if they were to go to the ACC
- 29:24championship and lose and be 10 and three, you know, I, I, I
- 29:29think that they would at least have, you know, some a case to
- 29:32make for they've had the maybe most impressive wins.
- 29:36Now they've also had the loss to Florida State, which was
- 29:39terrible. And in the hypothetical, if they
- 29:41lose to that Auburn team, that would be pretty terrible as
- 29:44well. But I think Alabama's got a bone
- 29:46to pick with being at 10 right now for the CFPI.
- 29:50Think we have them more accurately rated at 8.
- 29:53I think that is more where they should be.
- 29:56I don't think necessarily should stay in the top five if you lose
- 29:59the second game. But you know, I think that there
- 30:01should be a healthy like discernment.
- 30:03And I, I just questioned CFP committee.
- 30:06I think everybody does. It's not an easy job, but yeah,
- 30:11you've got some people who either don't care or are arguing
- 30:18for their own self-interest. I'm always nervous about it
- 30:20feels like politics and sports and I just want sports.
- 30:23How about that? You know, I think, I don't think
- 30:25I'm being hyperbolic when I say this, that I think there's 10s
- 30:28of thousands of people that are more qualified to be on the
- 30:30committee than the people who are on the committee.
- 30:33Yeah, I think that's one of my problems with it.
- 30:35But like you like, yes, it's a hard job, which is why when you
- 30:38get something like the XPR that, look, have a committee, have a
- 30:42committee that takes these teams, goes through all the data
- 30:45and have people who love college football, who watch every game,
- 30:49who are watching Hawaii at 11:00 PM and watching CUSA Tuesdays
- 30:53and Max and Wednesdays. And like have those people
- 30:57ranking teams and have that as one data point, have them as
- 31:02well. And this is what we tried to do
- 31:03with the XPR is hey, incorporate power rating a little bit, tone
- 31:07it down. But like, I'm trying to figure
- 31:09out who the best teams are. Sorry, I didn't mean to cut you
- 31:11off. No, no, no good.
- 31:13I'm just going to say, I think you could just get like the
- 31:17talking heads from across the sport that everybody stakes
- 31:20their flag on. I'm saying the Josh Pates of the
- 31:23world get a Josh Pate, Joel Klatt, bring us to, but, you
- 31:28know, put all these people. Maybe not the guys who are
- 31:34watching. Dude, give me Oh my gosh, 24/7
- 31:38Sports, the Cover 3 podcast. Give me those guys, all of them.
- 31:42But Elliot, not Danny Cannell, Tom for, but Elliot.
- 31:45Tom Fornelli, Thank you, Tom Fornelli.
- 31:47I need people who watch these games and are so involved in
- 31:51watching the most useless game. Give me those guys.
- 31:56That would be, I think the fans would vote and be like, yeah,
- 31:59let's. I mean, I, you know, I like this
- 32:02guy. I don't like this guy like this
- 32:03guy. But it's like you at least know
- 32:05that they care and they no ball. It's the same with like
- 32:08politicians. Would you want someone who
- 32:11doesn't read the bill or someone who doesn't live in your
- 32:14district? Who's lying about that?
- 32:16No, no, no, no, no, no. You want the people for the
- 32:19people by the people. That's what college football
- 32:20should be as well. I'm with you.
- 32:23We need a commissioner. We got to fix the calendar.
- 32:25We got to fix the committee. All this is fixable, wrong
- 32:30people's hands on the wheel. Daniel, 3 games are not picking
- 32:34that you're watching this one that we are watching this
- 32:35weekend as well as your team of the week from Week 12.
- 32:39Yeah, team of the week was Georgia, very impressive when
- 32:44Oklahoma was also on the list right there with their their win
- 32:48on the road at Bryan Denny Stadium against Alabama.
- 32:51Georgia though, it just was a master class.
- 32:54I feel like by Kirby Smart we talked about, you know, the
- 32:57middle 8 all the time and Kirby was really big on the the middle
- 33:018. As far as the last part of the
- 33:02first half, first part of the second-half, Georgia didn't have
- 33:05a good successful middle 8 even though they were leading 14 to 3
- 33:09at halftime. And Kirby just kind of created
- 33:12his own middle 8 by going down and scoring with 4th down
- 33:16conversions and then eventually do an onside kick.
- 33:20So I thought that was impressive.
- 33:21Big, big win. But as far as my three games,
- 33:24Texas against Arkansas, I think this is the classic let down
- 33:29spot for Texas, their 8 1/2 point favorite.
- 33:32They are favored in the game at home.
- 33:36They play Texas A&M next week. So you get the big rivalry next
- 33:38week, coming off of a deflating loss to Georgia.
- 33:42They knew if they kept it close that they had a shot at the CFP.
- 33:45If they beat Texas A&M, maybe that shots gone, maybe not.
- 33:50If there's chaos, Arkansas is a frisky little team and that is a
- 33:54rivalry game. So just watch out, man.
- 33:59Florida and Tennessee. How are we?
- 34:01Blessed to have this game this weekend.
- 34:04This is cupcake weekend in the SEC.
- 34:07This is when all the SEC teams famously get made fun of by
- 34:11every other conference for playing smaller schools, giving
- 34:15patient games. Well, this is Tennessee and
- 34:17Florida. We're used to seeing this one in
- 34:18September and sometimes October. This is the weekend before
- 34:23Thanksgiving. That's crazy.
- 34:25Give me that game every day of the week, man.
- 34:26This is in the Swamp. Tennessee's a slight favorite.
- 34:29They have not won in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
- 34:34I don't know, 20 years, I don't, I don't know.
- 34:36It's been a long time since they've won down there.
- 34:38I've been last game is one that we were considering picking
- 34:42Cincinnati hosting BYUBYU is a 2 1/2 point favorite.
- 34:46That one has implications for what the Big 12 champion, maybe
- 34:51big, still championship game at least.
- 34:54We just felt like this one may not quite be on the, you know,
- 34:58ready for maybe all of our listeners.
- 35:00We got a big, you know, fan base that cares a lot about SEC in
- 35:03the ACC, so we stuck close to home with our picks for that
- 35:07one. This one, that one's still going
- 35:09to be on my screen. I'm interested to see what
- 35:11happens in that game. I did not realize how one sided
- 35:14Florida Tennessee was. It's bad.
- 35:17Yeah, I'm just, you know, if if you go Wikipedia and like a
- 35:20series history, it shows you like colors, like if, if, which
- 35:23team wins that, that, that's a lot of blue.
- 35:28I'm like, oof, that's a lot of blue. 2003, by the way, was the
- 35:35last win in Gainesville. That's nuts.
- 35:39Wow. Wow.
- 35:42Yeah, I had no idea. OK.
- 35:45Everybody's talking about is Tennessee going to beat
- 35:48Vanderbilt? But it's like it's not going to
- 35:50they. Got Florida this week?
- 35:51You know you got Florida this week, so.
- 35:53It's is Florida dead, dead. That's my yeah, we'll see.
- 35:57Maybe, maybe they're going to pull up the series history and
- 35:59say, oh, we got to, you know, we got to show them who Daddy is.
- 36:03All right, They 3U matchups to watch this week.
- 36:06We've got some good ones in the uniform matchup of the week for
- 36:09this past week, Daniel was BYU versus TCU.
- 36:13Like I had Georgia, Texas. I'm going to walk back some of
- 36:15my comments in the Texas uniforms I rightfully got pushed
- 36:18back on. I'm going to save that for the
- 36:21offseason though. We're all do a full uniform
- 36:23breakdown, which I'm excited about.
- 36:24But BYUTCU, like TC is clean up their uniforms a good little
- 36:28bit. Nice little combo of the black,
- 36:31white, black combo for TCU. And then we had the white Royal
- 36:35white combo for BYU with like those again, good use of like a
- 36:39classic mix with the modern uniform thing of the the like
- 36:43reflective logo on the helmet being royal was a nice pop
- 36:48instead of like an entire like mirror looking helmet.
- 36:50Auburn does that really well. They've got like a reflective
- 36:53logo on the helmet. Nice little modern touch to a
- 36:55classic uniform. So great uniform match up.
- 36:58We've got a few good ones this week #1 Oregon, USC.
- 37:02I don't know what Oregon's wearing yet, but let me let me
- 37:04look while we're sitting here. Make sure they haven't dropped
- 37:06it. But USC is a way look is a
- 37:08classic Oregon. I will say this, Daniel, Oregon
- 37:11has had more misses this year than they usually have in a
- 37:14season. Excited to see what they come up
- 37:17with this week. Maybe it's black against USC.
- 37:23We'll see. Excited to see that'll that'll
- 37:25be the should be a good uniform match up though, and that one
- 37:29And then we've got Utah, Kansas State, 2 schools that have some
- 37:34really good uniforms. Good color contrast there as
- 37:36well. And the Texas, Arkansas, the
- 37:40burn torn Texas being at home big one there feed the left got
- 37:44left in the cutting room for Virginia Tech Miami should be a
- 37:47good one. Penn State, Nebraska don't love
- 37:49Nebraska's away uniforms, but some some blue and red should be
- 37:53nice on the field. Then your fourth quarter of our
- 37:57show 4 picks against the spread, we begin with Oklahoma and
- 38:05Missouri high noon. Oklahoma I believe rolls their
- 38:10own destiny for the playoff went out and you're in attended to
- 38:12SEC team with a win over Alabama.
- 38:15Whenever Michigan, who's going to have two or three losses, I
- 38:18think you're in at that rate. Only lost being to a playoff
- 38:23team in Ole Miss, a playoff team or actually not a playoff team.
- 38:29A93 Texas. I think you control your own
- 38:32destiny. But here's Missouri, Daniel,
- 38:35only 7 1/2 points with home field baked in with a backup
- 38:39quarterback baked in line. Seems a little smelly.
- 38:43Who you like in this one? Yeah.
- 38:44I mean, I'm just this one seems obvious to me and I, I don't
- 38:50know if that's a problem because we have not been as great as we
- 38:55normally are against the spread this year.
- 38:57But Missouri even with a backup quarterback can run the ball.
- 39:03They have shown that all year. Obviously Mod Hardy's having one
- 39:07of the best years in SEC history at this at this point already.
- 39:11And you add to it that Oklahoma just had such a signature win
- 39:17against Alabama can't make, I mean, but we looked at the post
- 39:22game win probability, expectancy, whatever that they
- 39:25stole that game that was. 4%. Very low.
- 39:28They did a good job. They were clutch when they had
- 39:30to be clutched. Their defense clamped down when
- 39:33they need to clamp down. Their offense has did exactly
- 39:37what you know enough in that game, you know, and they they
- 39:42had the ball bounced their way the right time.
- 39:44So defensive score, things like that.
- 39:47I just don't know. I don't know how much you can
- 39:51replicate that. I don't know.
- 39:53I'm saying they're going to outright lose to Missouri.
- 39:56I absolutely think that's on the table.
- 39:58But 7 1/2 points to me is too much for going against a team
- 40:03that can run the ball like Missouri.
- 40:05And I just don't know if Oklahoma is like head and
- 40:07shoulders better than Missouri. And I think that's mostly an
- 40:12indictment on Oklahoma's offense.
- 40:14So I think Oklahoma's defense can lead them to win this game
- 40:18and I think Oklahoma is a better team.
- 40:21But 7 1/2 points too much. So give me the Tigers, give me 7
- 40:251/2. I would not be surprised if they
- 40:28beat them, you know, if Missouri wins.
- 40:30But I think Oklahoma probably just wins a close game and they
- 40:34can't get get out of there, you know, for eight points or more.
- 40:37So 7 1/2 points give me those with Missouri.
- 40:40You know, I'm with you. I don't know if Oklahoma can
- 40:43score enough to blow them out like to to win by two
- 40:47possessions. I mean, dude, the the reason the
- 40:49post game what expectancy was 4% is because they they got doubled
- 40:53up in yardage. Like Oklahoma still couldn't run
- 40:56the ball. That's what was at 17 points off
- 40:58of turnovers and they had a missed field goal and they went
- 41:00by two. So look, you won the game.
- 41:04Your defense locked Alabama down.
- 41:05You forced those turnovers deserved win.
- 41:07But if I'm forward-looking from that game, there's a reason this
- 41:13is 7 1/2 and not 10 1/2, and I'm taking the Tiger for the points.
- 41:17I think Oklahoma wins a close game, I think.
- 41:20But if Missouri pulls off this upset, I'm going to be happy
- 41:23holding on to 7 1/2 points regardless.
- 41:26Again, Oklahoma's offense is still very pedestrian,
- 41:29especially running the ball still.
- 41:30And Missouri has a very good rush defense.
- 41:33They can get after the passer. They can get sacks on John.
- 41:36But here, Daniel, I mean, I, I would not be surprised at all if
- 41:39this is like a 1714 game. The the total on this game, I
- 41:44think it's 42. So I mean, Vegas is expecting
- 41:48like a 2114 game. I think it's exactly what you're
- 41:52going to get in this one. I'll say Oklahoma wins like 20
- 41:56to 14, which is like 34 points. I mean, that's that's that's
- 42:00crazy. Yeah.
- 42:02The good on good matchup I'm excited to watch is the Oklahoma
- 42:05rush defense against the Missouri rush offense.
- 42:09That will be very special to watch to see who gets an edge
- 42:11there because I think that could decide the game, which I think
- 42:14will be very close to give me some the 7 1/2 points I'll take
- 42:17the Tigers plus the points Oklahoma to win, but would not
- 42:20be surprised at all by an upset here.
- 42:22More upsets are going to happen, Daniel.
- 42:23We didn't see Oklahoma over Alabama last week.
- 42:26More upsets are going to happen. This could be the next one is
- 42:30we're chalking up this. Oh yeah, Oklahoma 10 and 2.
- 42:33They just got to beat this little Missouri team at home and
- 42:35boop, Missouri pulls off an upset would not surprise me.
- 42:38Give me those points. Another game with playoff
- 42:41implications. Vandy in Kentucky, Vandy at
- 42:44home, 9 1/2 point favorite. I feel like no one's talking
- 42:48about the fact that, again, Vanderbilt controls their own
- 42:51playoff destiny, that they went out and they are absolutely in
- 42:55with their only losses being to Texas and Alabama, one of those
- 43:00playoff team, you know, both on the road, they're in.
- 43:05Daniel, 9 1/2 point favorites against Kentucky, which if you
- 43:08had told me three years ago would have just said you're
- 43:10insane to get. Give it a 9 1/2 points to
- 43:13Kentucky in this matchup. Vandy, a 9 1/2 point favorite.
- 43:16Who do you like in Nashville? Yeah, Vanderbilt, I mean,
- 43:19they're the story here. This is the reason they're on.
- 43:22This is, you know, for us to talk to them.
- 43:26Pavia, I mean, 28 touchdowns on the year, leads the team in
- 43:31rushing 600 yards, you know, 2400 yards to the through the
- 43:35air. I think that, you know, he's,
- 43:39he's kind of he's, I want to say he's taking a step back in the
- 43:43Heisman race, but he's certainly still in there.
- 43:48Everybody knows him. He talked about him being one of
- 43:50the last Yolo quarterbacks there with being older, older
- 43:54quarterback. That's kind of been a theme for
- 43:55us this year. This is at home.
- 43:58I like Vandy to win. I just think there's a lot of
- 44:01pressure on Vandy right now and I think this Kentucky team, ever
- 44:06since Cutter Bully has been the guy freshman.
- 44:11Of course he's going to have his lumps, but he has really grown
- 44:14this year versus like AP rated teams.
- 44:18He's over 70% passing. I mean, he's like, you know, in
- 44:21the 60s for the year. But you can see, I mean, against
- 44:25Tennessee, of course, their defense is questionable, but he
- 44:28threw 5 touchdowns. He's really kind of come into
- 44:31his own. So I think that they're going to
- 44:33score on Vanderbilt. I think Vanderbilt is going to
- 44:36outpace them and essentially win by, you know, a touchdown, maybe
- 44:40even eight points. But 9 1/2 points is a lot of
- 44:42points. I think it's open at 10 1/2 and
- 44:45got back down pretty quick. Give me Kentucky with the
- 44:49points. I think Vanderbilt wins.
- 44:52I think they are one of these teams is just trying to survive.
- 44:55This is, you know, on the, you know, got a rivalry game next
- 44:59week with Tennessee. They know that that game is
- 45:02important for them to get into the playoff.
- 45:04This one, they just have to win. I don't know if style points are
- 45:07going to be right here, right now with this team for this
- 45:11game. I think basically they're like,
- 45:13let's just get out with the dub. So give me Kentucky Plus 9 1/2
- 45:17for this one. I was going to take the 9 1/2.
- 45:21I'm laying it, man. This is November, Vandy is off
- 45:25of a bye. I'm not sure if Kentucky is
- 45:26actually, but off of a bye. They try to think of who to
- 45:31compare this Kentucky team to and I think it's South Carolina
- 45:35as far as like profile of team or they rank offensively and
- 45:39defensively. I mean, I know it was September,
- 45:42but they beat South Carolina 31 seven in this game.
- 45:45I don't think that type of result is off the table for
- 45:49Vanderbilt here. I think Clark Lee's a very good
- 45:51football coach. I believe in that culture and
- 45:53what he's built. I think they're going to be
- 45:55locked in for this game because they have to be for every game.
- 45:58I think this is still Vanderbilt where you don't have the luxury
- 46:02to look ahead to next week. I think that's a good thing for
- 46:04Vanderbilt in the in a good way. You're still just Vandy.
- 46:09And so it's disrespectful to give you 9 1/2 to lay 9 1/2
- 46:13points. I think that like it.
- 46:14So I think embodying the we are Vanderbilt.
- 46:18You treat every game like a big game.
- 46:21The elite unit on this field is Vanderbilt's offense.
- 46:24This is I mean the top 25 rushing offense, a top 10
- 46:29scoring offense, a top 15 offense in yards per attempt
- 46:32passing. Like you said, Pavi has been
- 46:35elite this year. He should absolutely be in the
- 46:38Heisman conversation because Heisman not just a stat award.
- 46:40It's it's best player and I think best player a lot of times
- 46:43is impact on your team. Vanderbilt would not be where
- 46:46they are without Diego Pavi. Like what what he does for their
- 46:49offense both in the run and pass game that causes teams to have
- 46:53to play. Every asset of them is is
- 46:56special. And I think they win and cover
- 46:59against Kentucky. So give me the doors to lay the
- 47:029 1/2. All right, we go to Oregon.
- 47:07USC 330 man Oregon laying 9 1/2 here.
- 47:13I have felt two different ways about this on opposite ends at
- 47:17two different parts of this week.
- 47:20Daniel, who do you like in Eugene?
- 47:22I think for a lot of what you just said about Vanderbilt is
- 47:25kind of how I feel about Oregon, where I think that that team
- 47:30that can, you know, beat you up is still in there.
- 47:33I think that playing a team like, you know, Iowa that they
- 47:37did a couple weeks ago, and then of course, USC just came off
- 47:39playing Iowa. You saw what they were able to
- 47:43do against Minnesota, where they basically ratcheted to back up
- 47:46and just, you know, beat them pretty, pretty.
- 47:49The USC, they've got to win out to make the playoff.
- 47:55I've got concerns about this team, but they showed a lot of
- 47:58guts in the rain against Iowa last week.
- 48:01But they didn't cover, and Oregon has been covering.
- 48:07They didn't cover against Iowa, but I think that Iowa's just
- 48:11like that for everybody. But give me Oregon.
- 48:13I like them to cover 9 1/2. I just think that this one could
- 48:16get sideways and you could kind of see the deflation when USC
- 48:22realizes that they're going to lose because this may be their
- 48:25hope for the playoffs. And I think that Oregon can kind
- 48:29of pile it on. So give me Oregon.
- 48:30I'm a lay the points 9 1/2 think they win big.
- 48:34This is their kind of shot to try to punch their ticket at
- 48:37least in hopes that an opportunity opens up for them.
- 48:42If Michigan were to win, they can make the Big 10 championship
- 48:44or at 11 and one, be a contender for the CFP.
- 48:50Daniel, I'm trying to new strategy this week.
- 48:52I didn't tell you till now these three games I've picked, I felt
- 48:56the opposite way on. And so then I picked the other
- 48:59side because I've been so bad against the spread and then
- 49:01looked for ways to help it fit why I would choose that team.
- 49:05So I'm doing that here again. Give me the Trojans.
- 49:09Here's how USC can keep it close.
- 49:10Number one. Rain is likely still for this
- 49:14game. First it looks like it was with
- 49:17the whole game. Now it doesn't look like that,
- 49:19but rain likely. You know, this is still opponent
- 49:23adjusted on a per paper at per play basis.
- 49:25The number one offense in the country belongs to USCI.
- 49:28Think that's going under the radar this year.
- 49:31If this were an Oklahoma team, I think we'd be talking about this
- 49:34sort of Oklahoma Big 12 team under Lincoln Riley, probably
- 49:37undefeated. And we'd be talking about, you
- 49:39know, how good this Oklahoma team is.
- 49:42My worry is USC has not played well on the road this year.
- 49:47Still. They did against Nebraska and
- 49:50that was important for me to see.
- 49:52Was that, OK, you can go on the road and get a big win because
- 49:55they did it so poorly against Notre Dame.
- 49:57And then who is their other loss?
- 49:59Illinois at Illinois earlier in the year they did.
- 50:01They won against Nebraska. That was important to see.
- 50:05But now they're on the road to Oregon.
- 50:08I don't think they can win because I still think their
- 50:10defense is a liability, but I think they can make it mucky and
- 50:14keep it close. They're they're not getting beat
- 50:16because they're not physical, which is how USC was 1-2 and
- 50:20three years ago. So they're not losing for the
- 50:23same reasons. They're still building there.
- 50:26I think they can score enough to make this a A1 touchdown game
- 50:30instead of A2 possession game. And so given the Trojans to
- 50:35cover, I do like Oregon to win. USC has a much easier game next
- 50:38week. Look, both teams control their
- 50:40in playoff destiny and if you want to say who needs it more
- 50:43than you know, Oregon can lose still.
- 50:44And I just think if you win 10 games in the Big 10 or SEC,
- 50:48you're most likely in Oregon can still lose again.
- 50:53They play Washington next week. They've got to be locked in USC.
- 50:57You lose a third game, I think you're definitely out for USC.
- 51:01They need it. But I like Oregon to win.
- 51:03Give me the Trojans to cover the night and a half.
- 51:07The only game I'm telling about this.
- 51:09Week that you've been doing the opposite like George Costanza
- 51:14and we'll see, dude, you might go for a note because when he
- 51:17did the opposite in that episode on Seinfeld, I mean, he got the
- 51:21date with the pretty girl, he got the promotion at the job,
- 51:25Everything went right for him the time he decided to do the
- 51:28opposite. So this might work out for you.
- 51:31Yeah, all right. It's the only game I forget
- 51:33about all week, Daniel, And I'm not picking opposite on this
- 51:36one. George Tech and Pitt.
- 51:39Georgia Tech, a 2 1/2 point favorite on the flats at Hyundai
- 51:44Field at Bobby dot Stadium. Look, Georgia Tech still in
- 51:49control of their own playoff destiny, still in control of
- 51:51their own ACC destiny. And in playing for that
- 51:56championship game, they win, they're in Daniel.
- 51:59This is their ticket to the ACC championship, their ticket to
- 52:01Charlotte. Pitt also alive in the ACC
- 52:04Championship race. Who do you like in this game in
- 52:06Atlanta? Yeah, I, I, I played my hand a
- 52:09little bit when I talked about Pitt being in the in the
- 52:13playoff. I tried to bury the lead a
- 52:15little bit by saying I could still pick Georgia Tech, think
- 52:19George Tech can win and should win.
- 52:23I just had been watching this team slowly, I want to say
- 52:27unravel, but as they've played some of these games two weeks
- 52:32ago, lose to NC State, OK, it was on the road.
- 52:36It's a tough environment. Last week, everybody just
- 52:39checked it off. They're going to win.
- 52:41We don't even need to show up or talk about it.
- 52:44They were in the fight of their lives until the clock hit triple
- 52:48zeros. They still won, which is great,
- 52:52you know, for their playoff hopes and everything like that.
- 52:55I know the ACC people are like, if Georgia Tech just wins, it's
- 52:58over. They've solidified their spot.
- 53:00It makes it easy. But if they lose, it comes this
- 53:03question of who's going to be in the championship game and all
- 53:07this stuff. Haynes King's leading rusher,
- 53:10He's obviously they're, you know, great in the past game
- 53:14already over 3000 yards for the year combined, 24 touchdowns,
- 53:19you know, 14 rushing touchdowns as a quarterback.
- 53:22Unreal, dude. He's just he's been a
- 53:25difference. And I'm I'm reluctant to pick
- 53:28Pittsburgh because I do think that Georgia Tech has a lot of
- 53:31pride and wants to win this game.
- 53:33My heart says Georgia Tech, but I'm taking Pittsburgh because I
- 53:39think that I would be mistaken if I took tag.
- 53:42So give me PIT plus the 2 1/2. If tag finds a way to win by 1,
- 53:47then I win both ways. How about that?
- 53:50So, But yeah, give me PIT in the 2 1/2 points because I think
- 53:52that they, I, they just think they're going to represent the
- 53:55ACC man. I, I don't know, this whole
- 53:58smokescreen that Pat Narduzzi has just confused the mess out
- 54:02of me. So I don't know.
- 54:04I just went with my gut last week that they should get blown
- 54:07out by Notre Dame. I'm going with my gut this week
- 54:09that they should beat Georgia Tech.
- 54:12It's tough to wipe off a loss like that, though, So we'll see.
- 54:15But give me a pit plus the points.
- 54:18Daniel, they were, I'm taking pit to win straight up because
- 54:23this, this is a look ahead spot, man.
- 54:25They they were looking past Notre Dame to this Georgia Tech
- 54:28game. You heard Pat Narduzzi, that was
- 54:31not a big game, he said. I'm glad you asked.
- 54:34You're like, Oh, no. Not.
- 54:36A Not a big game. We can get beat, you know, he
- 54:39told his team. Hey, we can lose 100 to 11 and
- 54:42it does not matter if we win the next two.
- 54:44He was given his team permission to just lay down, let Notre Dame
- 54:47do whatever they want because if we win next week, we're going to
- 54:50go to the ACC championship game. And that's exactly what they're
- 54:54going to do, Daniel. They're going to go to the
- 54:55Flash, going to be Georgia Tech because they're a more complete
- 54:58team than Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech this year.
- 55:01You know who's the best defense Georgia Tech has faced this
- 55:03year? I'll do one better.
- 55:06How about the best offense? Georgia Tech's giving up a ton
- 55:09of points out of the Power 5 Daniel.
- 55:11They rank for opponent adjusting metrics out of 68 Power Four
- 55:14teams, 66th out of 68 Power Four teams.
- 55:18As far as where their defense ranks, their past defense ranks
- 55:2248th, their rush defense 66th. This is a pit team.
- 55:27They can absolutely throw the ball.
- 55:29They're OK rushing. And a pit defense that is very
- 55:33like a top 15 level defense, it gets a top ten level offense
- 55:36that'll be good on good. I think anyone can score in
- 55:40Georgia Tech, so I think Pitt's going to score enough to win.
- 55:43All they need is one stop. The Georgia Tech offense goes
- 55:46out in the field knowing they have to score every single time
- 55:48to win. Hans King does everything, which
- 55:51is why he should be considered for the Heisman because he does
- 55:53everything for that offense. I don't think it's going to be
- 55:55enough to be Pitt. They've been preparing for this
- 55:58game for two weeks, looking past little old Notre Dame to this
- 56:02big one against Georgia Tech. Give me the Pitt Panthers to one
- 56:05straight out. It's the only game I felt really
- 56:06good about. I circled this one, Daniel, like
- 56:094 weeks ago we were talking and I said, yeah, Pitt's beating
- 56:11Georgia Tech. Like Georgia Tech's losing one
- 56:13of these games to NC State or Pitt and they lost NC State or
- 56:18who did they play last week? Georgia Tech.
- 56:19Last week, they played Boston College.
- 56:21Boston goodness, I didn't see that one coming.
- 56:23Say, yeah, they lost NC State, and then they were down to
- 56:26Boston College for most of the game.
- 56:28Had to goodness, he wrote. Come back at the end.
- 56:30Yeah, give me, give me the Pit Panthers to win.
- 56:35I'm getting 2 1/2 points. I like it.
- 56:37They would be favored on a neutral.
- 56:38That's what that's telling you right there.
- 56:40Pit would be favored on a neutral.
- 56:41Neutral or it'd be a pic depending on how many points
- 56:44you're given for, for Bobby Dodd home field.
