- 0:00Speaker 1: So Bill has a headache to which I can describe
- 0:04Speaker 1: to I'm in the room with him feeling it on
- 0:07Speaker 1: the show, and I get it like I knock things
- 0:09Speaker 1: all out of sync, and I'm maybe a little more
- 0:11Speaker 1: annoying than he's ready for. But Bill, it's a headache
- 0:17Speaker 1: that has been part of your life now for thirty
- 0:21Speaker 1: seven years.
- 0:24Speaker 2: That's it. I retired, that's all. That's it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So it was in August of nineteen eighty eight, you know,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and I was just this dumb, little eighteen year old
- 0:36Speaker 1: had just graduated from Roy High School, working at Golden
- 0:39Speaker 1: Corral and South logged.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And had a haircut that made you look like you
- 0:42Speaker 2: were in flock of seagulls.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, of course I did. If I had enough hair,
- 0:45Speaker 1: i'd still do that. But I came in and applied
- 0:49Speaker 1: to be an overnight Boardopard World.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Man, that's right.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And so at KJQ, it was the alternative station at
- 0:58Speaker 1: the time.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Was right across the street from the animal grooming place. Yeah,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and I.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Had some experience, you know, working with sound and mobile
- 1:08Speaker 1: dances and stuff, and I wanted to get into radio
- 1:10Speaker 1: because that's what you wanted to do in nineteen eighty eight.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And I go and I apply to be this overnight
- 1:14Speaker 1: board operator for the radio station, which in those days
- 1:18Speaker 1: we had an AM station. So I was in charge
- 1:20Speaker 1: of keeping that thing moving. And it was this giant
- 1:24Speaker 1: tape machine that was the size of a refrigerator and
- 1:26Speaker 1: you'd load all the tapes into it. And anyway, I
- 1:29Speaker 1: had to watch that overnight, plus watch the FM overnight
- 1:32Speaker 1: and the FM overnight in that time it would replay
- 1:34Speaker 1: Biff Raft's afternoon show that recorded on a reel to
- 1:38Speaker 1: reel really from two pm to six pm, and then
- 1:43Speaker 1: it would air two am to six am on this
- 1:47Speaker 1: reel to reel that would always end up going slower
- 1:50Speaker 1: than it should And anyway, I had a babysit the thing,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and you hired me Bill, Yeah, for some reason.
- 1:56Speaker 2: For a brief time, I was in charge of the
- 1:59Speaker 2: AM station. What about the AM? What about the AM?
- 2:02Speaker 1: It was the first it was the first sign of
- 2:04Speaker 1: radio going to going to hell in a hand basket
- 2:07Speaker 1: when you started acquiring more and more jobs and keeping
- 2:10Speaker 1: just one paycheck. So, yeah, you were will you be
- 2:13Speaker 1: in charge of this AM?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Sure? Fine? Okay, yeah it was so we do the
- 2:18Speaker 2: morning show and then and you had another job too, right, Kerrie.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Oh no, you were kind of in charge of the
- 2:25Speaker 1: AM when it played music. You were sort of I
- 2:27Speaker 1: mean you had to watch both, you know. Yeah, it
- 2:30Speaker 1: was anyway, but you guys were kind of in charge
- 2:32Speaker 1: of the AM, and you hired me to be part
- 2:36Speaker 1: of that, and.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You were working at the Golden Corral.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yes, I was a potato bar expert. I could I
- 2:44Speaker 1: could take care of the salad bar.
- 2:46Speaker 2: That was the last time. So what was that thirty
- 2:48Speaker 2: one years ago, thirty seven years thirty seven years ago
- 2:52Speaker 2: was the last time I ever went to a Golden Corral.
- 2:57Speaker 2: That's right, because you guys came and visited me. I
- 2:59Speaker 2: think it was like my final day had potatoes. Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it was my for a while.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I was I was going to Weaver State and working
- 3:06Speaker 1: at both jobs all at the same time, and I
- 3:10Speaker 1: was able to finally quit Golden Corral and be a
- 3:12Speaker 1: full time radio guy. It wasn't even a full time,
- 3:15Speaker 1: but it was enough enough part time hours to survive.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And uh.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And then you're like, well, we should come and say
- 3:21Speaker 1: goodbye at the Golden Corral on your final day, which
- 3:23Speaker 1: you did, and it was I felt like I had
- 3:26Speaker 1: I had celebrities in.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The room with me. It was great. And you know
- 3:29Speaker 2: I remember walking into that uh Golden Corral and you
- 3:33Speaker 2: came out, uh to you know, help us with the
- 3:35Speaker 2: potato bar, and I got this headache.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's still there today. Yeah, it's sometimes it's
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's all pronounced. Yeah, but when I'm around you for
- 3:46Speaker 1: a for a long length of time, the aching.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Am I right? That Golden Corral was like across
- 3:52Speaker 2: from Warrens Burgers. It was.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it was right there in the corner, right there
- 3:56Speaker 1: where Wall Avenue intersects with Riverdale Road.
- 3:58Speaker 2: There was a Wall Avenue each Riverdale Road and just
- 4:01Speaker 2: goes crazy.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yes, thank you, by the new Gate mall and it
- 4:05Speaker 1: they tore so the building got torn down eventually. It's
- 4:08Speaker 1: now there's a Texas Roadhouse on that same sort of
- 4:12Speaker 1: piece of property and and much better steaks than we
- 4:16Speaker 1: had back then.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Oh I don't well, I don't know. I never had
- 4:19Speaker 2: a Golden Girl, Bill. You have just had the potato bar.
- 4:22Speaker 2: That's all I have. Potato bar was was excellent back then.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It was more of a steakhouse and not this like
- 4:29Speaker 1: buffet thing that it is now. So we had we
- 4:31Speaker 1: had a salad bar that was pretty nice and a
- 4:33Speaker 1: potato bar that had a lot of good stuff on it.
- 4:34Speaker 1: But then uh, and then mostly it was like steaks
- 4:37Speaker 1: and things that you were from the actual kitchen.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So hmmm. That was my my experience from Golden Corral
- 4:43Speaker 2: directly into radio. And you know you're still using some
- 4:46Speaker 2: of those same skills today. I do.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I have to clean after it already gets done. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: have to clean some of this billed cheese and gravy
- 4:52Speaker 1: off of the cabinets in here. And you know it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: that hot. That that training that I got, and I
- 4:58Speaker 1: remember you remember build a story where you called me
- 5:02Speaker 1: and I was.
- 5:02Speaker 2: At work at Golden craw and you told me that
- 5:04Speaker 2: you were hiring me. You started squealing and yelling to
- 5:07Speaker 2: your co worker as I hung up the phone. The
- 5:12Speaker 2: radios it couldn't keep his cool until the phone was
- 5:15Speaker 2: hung up. I was excited, and I was I was
- 5:18Speaker 2: eighteen years old.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And we should calculate because I know it's interesting because
- 5:22Speaker 1: I kind of sort of live in like the shadow.
- 5:24Speaker 1: It's the shadow of radio from hell, like you guys
- 5:26Speaker 1: at this institution that's been on the air together for
- 5:30Speaker 1: a million years, right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Just about forty right, yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 1: God, see so my, my dumb little thirty seven years
- 5:40Speaker 1: compared to that, it's like, eh, well, you know, well
- 5:42Speaker 1: it's only three years off to Yeah, but I mean,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you know, you guys do like a full show. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: just come in and play music and mouth off. But anyway,
- 5:51Speaker 1: thirty seven it's insane that that is the how long
- 5:54Speaker 1: that's been going on.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It was August. Yeah, it was in the month of August,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and that was the last time that you truly felt joy. No,
- 6:02Speaker 2: I was. I still love this, I still love it. Listen.
- 6:05Speaker 2: We could all do other things if we wanted. I
- 6:07Speaker 2: mean maybe not. Maybe I don't have anything. I don't
- 6:09Speaker 2: have any other skills. Yeah, I guess I could go
- 6:11Speaker 2: back to Golden Corral Malibu chicken. Yeah, so the Golden
- 6:18Speaker 2: Golden Coral had golden grilled chicken. Okay, the Texter said,
- 6:22Speaker 2: Golden Corral Malibu chicken, steak and steak and steak and
- 6:25Speaker 2: Malibu chicken.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the That was our arch rivals over
- 6:28Speaker 1: at the Sizzler, those bastards down the street.
- 6:31Speaker 2: A location on Wall Avenue. Started on those jerks, we'd
- 6:36Speaker 2: sneak over and you know, let the air out of
- 6:38Speaker 2: their tires. Over at the Sizzler. They had a better
- 6:41Speaker 2: salad bar. No they didn't.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I was in charge of the damn salad bar, Golden
- 6:47Speaker 1: Corral and fresh Man.
- 6:51Speaker 2: My head hurts. You had to say that you're dissing
- 6:54Speaker 2: your diss.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I used to make the ranch dressing fresh in the building.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Fresh meaning you'd had the powder.
- 7:03Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, we used uh we'd mix mayo
- 7:07Speaker 1: and uh yeah there was some powder, but like but
- 7:10Speaker 1: we would mix the Thousand Island fresh.
- 7:12Speaker 2: All right, there you go. If you have any questions
- 7:16Speaker 2: about potato bars or radio or radio called Ton
