Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: He is the newest member of the Angels. Drew Pomeranch
- 0:07Speaker 1: joining us right now. Drew, great to have you on
- 0:09Speaker 1: the show. Thank you for the time. Congrats on the
- 0:11Speaker 1: deal with the Angels. Tell us how it all went down,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and how you doing.
- 0:15Speaker 2: What's up, guys, Thanks for having me. You know, I
- 0:20Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean this time last year, I
- 0:22Speaker 2: didn't know what was going to happen. Obviously, I had
- 0:25Speaker 2: a pretty good year that allowed me to continue playing,
- 0:28Speaker 2: because I don't think I would have signed another minor
- 0:31Speaker 2: league deal and kept this going. But I you know,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I wanted to stay close to Sokow, where we live
- 0:39Speaker 2: and where my family is, and they connected with us early,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and we talked to some other teams too, kind of
- 0:47Speaker 2: stayed in the loop with everybody. Then we obviously got
- 0:50Speaker 2: a deal done. I wanted to. I was hoping to
- 0:52Speaker 2: get it done before the holidays, just because you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: if you don't get it done before then sometimes you know,
- 0:56Speaker 2: it slows down and then you start to get pushed
- 0:58Speaker 2: towards spring training, and you know, then you gotta worry
- 1:00Speaker 2: about all that stuff.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Oh wait, that's not a real thing. Before we before,
- 1:04Speaker 3: before we dig into this troup, what is that picture
- 1:07Speaker 3: behind you? Is that you surfing?
- 1:09Speaker 2: No, I wish it was. I just doubt that. I'm
- 1:13Speaker 2: in my son's bedroom. I wish that was. I wish
- 1:16Speaker 2: I could say that was surf in a giant wave
- 1:18Speaker 2: right there.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you could have just said because it's so blurred out,
- 1:23Speaker 3: you couldn't really tell, So you could have just say, yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 3: i've been carving. Are from Tennessee, though you just said
- 1:30Speaker 3: your family is in California, so your whole.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm from Tennessee, but we're living in sokol right now.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I'm living We're in Laguna Beach. That's why this there's
- 1:39Speaker 2: a surfer behind me right here. I mean we're probably
- 1:42Speaker 2: like thirty minutes from Angel Stadium. It's uh, you know
- 1:47Speaker 2: this is extremely convenient.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, that makes sense for the Angels, right, I
- 1:51Speaker 3: mean totally totally makes sense. By the way, what you
- 1:55Speaker 3: just said is what I want to hit on about.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Oh if I don't sign before the holidays, we talk
- 1:59Speaker 3: about this all the time.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I do.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Your parents start calling right Your wife is like, where
- 2:03Speaker 3: are we going for spring training? Your kids are saying,
- 2:06Speaker 3: oh daddy, are we going? Are you still playing? What's
- 2:09Speaker 3: happening right, So yes, it's awesome that you've got to
- 2:11Speaker 3: place one that's close to your house too. You know
- 2:14Speaker 3: you're going to spring training in Arizona, and three you
- 2:17Speaker 3: can live at home and make that commute. I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 3: I congratulations, congratulations, exactly.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It was like a Christmas miracle. And to be honest,
- 2:27Speaker 2: it's the best time to sign my before Christmas. So
- 2:29Speaker 2: as I drove over to the Team store and bought
- 2:31Speaker 2: a bunch of stuff to get everybody for Christmas. So
- 2:34Speaker 2: it was it was good in many ways.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Last minute shopping. I love that.
- 2:39Speaker 5: And first of all, I got to say, you're cooked.
- 2:41Speaker 5: You're never playing anywhere else again. I tell everybody who
- 2:43Speaker 5: signs close to home, you are never going to sign
- 2:47Speaker 5: anywhere else. There's no way your wife is going to
- 2:49Speaker 5: say or anybody in your family is going to say, yeah, no.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Problem, I would.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I'll be fine, like I'll fly out to I'll fly
- 2:57Speaker 5: out to Chicago and you can you know we'll do
- 2:59Speaker 5: that again.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It's fine.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Nope, nope, no, you're exactly right. Yeah, you're exactly right.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I kind of I kind of had to sign close
- 3:08Speaker 2: to home. That's you know, this time around, so I
- 3:12Speaker 2: think you're exactly right. I think I'm I'm restricted regionally
- 3:16Speaker 2: majorly now.
- 3:17Speaker 5: So all right, take us through last year, Take us
- 3:20Speaker 5: through pitching in Tacoma. Take us through the fact that
- 3:25Speaker 5: your injuries and then you were pitching in the minor leagues.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Like some people don't know, you weren't in the big
- 3:31Speaker 5: leagues for full three years or is it full two years?
- 3:35Speaker 5: And then you made it back last year.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well, I didn't pitch. I mean, I was still under
- 3:39Speaker 2: contract for a couple of years, but I the last
- 3:42Speaker 2: game I pitched him was August of twenty twenty one
- 3:44Speaker 2: in the big leagues. I mean, I'll give you the
- 3:47Speaker 2: whole spiel. It's like last year, you know, coming back
- 3:51Speaker 2: after my Padres contract ran out. I guess that was
- 3:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty three was last year, and you know, I
- 4:00Speaker 2: got hurt at the end of the year, and I
- 4:02Speaker 2: just kept getting hurt. So then coming into spring training
- 4:05Speaker 2: the next year, I didn't know if anyone was gonna
- 4:07Speaker 2: give me a chance again. I was trying to sign
- 4:10Speaker 2: close to you know, close to Soka. I actually sign
- 4:13Speaker 2: with the Angels for spring training in twenty twenty four,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and you know I came in I signed literally the
- 4:19Speaker 2: day before camp started. I came in and I had
- 4:23Speaker 2: a you know, I kind of surprised myself, had a
- 4:24Speaker 2: pretty good spring didn't make the team. And then I,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, that was my first time dealing with the
- 4:31Speaker 2: minor league signing and trying to manage how do you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: should I opt out? Should I go somewhere else? Should
- 4:37Speaker 2: I you know, I think now I've settled on I
- 4:40Speaker 2: think it's sometimes better to stay with the team if
- 4:42Speaker 2: you're going to go to the minor leagues, unless you
- 4:44Speaker 2: have like a clear opportunity, just because then you you
- 4:47Speaker 2: have this like period of time sometimes to they get
- 4:50Speaker 2: to know you. Then they want to watch you, but
- 4:52Speaker 2: you already have all this relationship built up during spring training.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But that's a whole other thing. So I went signed
- 4:58Speaker 2: with the Daughters. I played in Oklahoma City for a
- 4:59Speaker 2: month and a half. You know, we had some dialogue
- 5:02Speaker 2: there with them, but I kind of missed my window
- 5:04Speaker 2: of of getting called up there and I opted out
- 5:09Speaker 2: a few times, you know, And I then I opted
- 5:15Speaker 2: out one of the times the last time, and the
- 5:17Speaker 2: Giants needed someone for like four days, and I was like,
- 5:20Speaker 2: you know what, I'll go there. It's fine. And I
- 5:24Speaker 2: went there for four days. But then you get caught
- 5:26Speaker 2: in this loop as a as a veteran guy on
- 5:29Speaker 2: or just a just a player and a minor league
- 5:31Speaker 2: deal in general, because you signed these advanced consents and
- 5:34Speaker 2: you basically feel like you're fighting for like two days
- 5:36Speaker 2: at a time, one day at a time, a week
- 5:38Speaker 2: at a time, or you know, just you're filling these
- 5:41Speaker 2: little gaps for these teams, which then I you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: by I was home, I stopped after those four days.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I just kind of stayed home because I was getting
- 5:48Speaker 2: a bunch of like you know, two week opt outs,
- 5:51Speaker 2: one month opt outs again, looking at these like advanced consents,
- 5:56Speaker 2: like I'm just chipping around for a day here, a
- 5:59Speaker 2: day there, and I just was like, you know what,
- 6:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna stop this. And I didn't feel super great anyway.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So then fast forward, I was basically kind of done.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I was like, I don't want to play anymore. And
- 6:10Speaker 2: then as time went on, I took a few months
- 6:12Speaker 2: off or I didn't do anything, and then I was like,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know what, I should probably like start working out
- 6:17Speaker 2: because I need to do something, because I was just
- 6:20Speaker 2: enjoying having nothing on the schedule, which you guys know
- 6:24Speaker 2: is pos post playing days. And then you know, the
- 6:28Speaker 2: the Mariners had kind of reached out the previous summer
- 6:31Speaker 2: about one of those like, you know, come play for
- 6:33Speaker 2: a month and then opt out whatever. So they reached out.
- 6:36Speaker 2: They gave me what I wanted. I was like, you
- 6:37Speaker 2: know what, if I feel good, I go to spring training.
- 6:39Speaker 2: If I don't, I won't.
- 6:41Speaker 6: You know.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I went there, had another good spring and like I
- 6:43Speaker 2: said before, I opted out and kind of like to
- 6:47Speaker 2: see what was out there. You know, hurt a little bit,
- 6:50Speaker 2: but no one really wanted to take a chance. So
- 6:52Speaker 2: then the mistake I made last year, I didn't do.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So I stayed with the same team and I went
- 6:58Speaker 2: to Tacoma for three weeks. You know, was was doing
- 7:01Speaker 2: that whole thing there. I pitched twelve. I mean I
- 7:05Speaker 2: had a couple saves, like my I felt better, My
- 7:08Speaker 2: velocity was better, everything was better. I thought I had
- 7:10Speaker 2: a good chance there because they had at the time,
- 7:13Speaker 2: they had one left in the big leagues. I think
- 7:15Speaker 2: Spire was the only guy up. And then had that
- 7:19Speaker 2: upper mobility claus on April twentieth come up, and you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: got scooped up to the Cubs.
- 7:25Speaker 3: So I mean, that's a crazy story. But you know
- 7:28Speaker 3: what happened. You started a playoff game. You started a
- 7:32Speaker 3: playoff game Game five, so all that stuff that you're
- 7:34Speaker 3: talking about. You started a winner go Home playoff game.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Explain what happened when you went to the Cubs, because
- 7:39Speaker 3: you had a really nice year for the Cubs. So
- 7:41Speaker 3: what did they do? What did they change? How did
- 7:43Speaker 3: they make you into their Game five starter?
- 7:46Speaker 2: You know, I think that they didn't really change much.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I I so I knew that clause was coming up
- 7:51Speaker 2: in my contract that week, and I was kind of
- 7:54Speaker 2: getting at the point where I'm like, am I just
- 7:56Speaker 2: gonna keep doing this? Or like, where's the where's the
- 8:00Speaker 2: like what am I going to press the jet button with?
- 8:03Speaker 2: With triple A? And I had that clause and we
- 8:06Speaker 2: went to Oklahoma City for a week and I was like,
- 8:09Speaker 2: you know what, I'm just gonna do everything, give it everything.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I got through as hard as I can this week,
- 8:14Speaker 2: and sure enough, like Villo jumped a little bit and
- 8:17Speaker 2: I think I struck out the side in the first appearance,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and then I got to save that week, and you know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: I you know, it timed up perfectly because then I
- 8:25Speaker 2: got brought into you know, I got scooped up by
- 8:28Speaker 2: the Cubs and I was feeling in a good place.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I went out there and you know, with I told
- 8:34Speaker 2: people this, with the ABS system, it's going to be
- 8:36Speaker 2: interesting to see with with you know, with guys this
- 8:39Speaker 2: year anyway. But for me then I was like, you
- 8:41Speaker 2: know what, it feels like I'm thrown into like the
- 8:43Speaker 2: tiniest little box, so I might as well just try
- 8:46Speaker 2: and throw everything down the middle and see what happens.
- 8:48Speaker 2: So the first like month or two with the Cubs,
- 8:53Speaker 2: when you know, when I went up, I was just
- 8:54Speaker 2: trying to fill up the zone. This is what I
- 8:56Speaker 2: had been doing in Triple A, and I was having success.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So like, you know what, I'm just going to keep
- 9:01Speaker 2: doing this, and you know, I have a very simple
- 9:03Speaker 2: approach to pitching. I'm gonna throw fastball and I'm gonna
- 9:06Speaker 2: throw a curveball off of that, and it's you know,
- 9:08Speaker 2: there's not really much thought going on in my head,
- 9:10Speaker 2: to be honest, and you know, it was just it
- 9:14Speaker 2: was just a perfect timing of things. I had success again,
- 9:17Speaker 2: and then you know, after a couple of months, uh,
- 9:20Speaker 2: you know, I had to obviously making it as as
- 9:23Speaker 2: they adjusted, I had to adjust, and you know, I
- 9:27Speaker 2: had a little bit of an adjustment period, but then
- 9:29Speaker 2: I kind of realized, you know, I was in a
- 9:31Speaker 2: better place with my you know, pitch selections, and you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: you know, then that runs into you know, you start
- 9:38Speaker 2: to get into these ends of the year and you
- 9:40Speaker 2: get these big games, and so I would always ramp
- 9:43Speaker 2: it up a little bit in the big games just
- 9:44Speaker 2: because you know, it's more excitement, it's more you know, adrenaline,
- 9:48Speaker 2: all of those things. And then you know, going in
- 9:51Speaker 2: so I was feeling really good going into the to
- 9:54Speaker 2: the you know, towards the end of the year, into
- 9:56Speaker 2: the playoffs, and I had I have a great relationship
- 9:58Speaker 2: with all this. I have a great relationship with counsels
- 10:00Speaker 2: from playing with them in Milwaukee too. You know I
- 10:03Speaker 2: had all those games. You know, I opened games for him.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I did everything. I mean, I but that's always my
- 10:08Speaker 2: thing with counsel. I mean this is back when I
- 10:10Speaker 2: played Milwaukee. When I got here, he called me when
- 10:13Speaker 2: I got to when I got Chicago, he called me
- 10:16Speaker 2: the day I was coming and I was like, you
- 10:17Speaker 2: know what, well, I do whatever you need me to do.
- 10:19Speaker 2: You need me to get out the middle in beginning whatever, like,
- 10:23Speaker 2: just just tell me what you need me to do,
- 10:25Speaker 2: and and that's pretty much what I did.
- 10:29Speaker 5: You're playing like a rookie in the big leagues at
- 10:31Speaker 5: age in the upper thirties because you were just like, whatever,
- 10:35Speaker 5: I'm just gonna go out and let strikes. That'll be cool. Yeah,
- 10:38Speaker 5: first round? Is the game so easy for you guys? Well,
- 10:41Speaker 5: my question is it's gonna veer off of last year
- 10:43Speaker 5: a little bit. But you said about the ABS. I've
- 10:46Speaker 5: always said, when when they started talking about the ABS
- 10:48Speaker 5: and they started talking about the strike zone and everything,
- 10:51Speaker 5: I caught you in spring training in sixteen with the
- 10:53Speaker 5: Padres and then we played together in the big leagues
- 10:56Speaker 5: in San Francisco. I said, there's no curveball that I've
- 10:59Speaker 5: caught in games that I think would benefit in the ABS,
- 11:04Speaker 5: and people will be so shocked at where your curveball lands.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Do you think that's going to be a slight advantage
- 11:10Speaker 5: for you this year because of how your curveball is
- 11:14Speaker 5: not called at the bottom of the zone and how
- 11:17Speaker 5: big of a brand and it's just a unique break.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Do you feel like.
- 11:21Speaker 3: It's going to be an advantage for you?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it could be. I think it was
- 11:25Speaker 2: a bigger advantage when they I think initially had didn't
- 11:28Speaker 2: they They think they had the zone at the front
- 11:31Speaker 2: of the plate right, and then guys bouncing the balls.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Guys are bouncing balls. They were calling strikes, and then
- 11:36Speaker 2: they drifted towards the medal. If there's that correct, just
- 11:39Speaker 2: back a little bit.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Guys weren't bouncing the balls. You were bouncing the balls.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Telling you there's nobody. There's nobody that was able to
- 11:46Speaker 5: do it. Because I used to watch when I would
- 11:47Speaker 5: when I would catch you, I'd look at what the
- 11:50Speaker 5: machine says, and now the machine is what everybody's using.
- 11:54Speaker 5: It's like, this is a strike. You lost that pitch.
- 11:56Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm glad I caught it.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Like yeah, especially in twenty sixteen when you were catching
- 12:03Speaker 2: me because I threw like forty five per curve balls.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I feel like I could just nick a you know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: nick the bottom bar there so we'll see I mean
- 12:10Speaker 2: I again, like it's I don't know, I just I
- 12:13Speaker 2: just felt like you with with the abs box. It
- 12:16Speaker 2: feels so small, it feels like you're like, it feels
- 12:19Speaker 2: like it's not the plate's not as wide. And the
- 12:22Speaker 2: plate's not. I think it felt high. I think the
- 12:25Speaker 2: bottom of the zone felt higher for some reason to me,
- 12:27Speaker 2: But I don't know. We'll see. Uh. I'm hoping it
- 12:30Speaker 2: benefits me pretty good on the curveball this next year.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But it was pretty heavy fastball last year, so.
- 12:38Speaker 4: That's fair.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So so, Drew, I wanted to ask you about the
- 12:43Speaker 1: Angels more and the off season pickups. So what do
- 12:46Speaker 1: you think of the rest of their offseason so far?
- 12:48Speaker 1: It's not like I'm asking you to like give analysis
- 12:51Speaker 1: on you know, the team and each pick, but more
- 12:54Speaker 1: like they trade for Grayson Rodriguez, they pick up Alec Manoa,
- 12:59Speaker 1: like these are names at most both baseball fans know
- 13:02Speaker 1: and have either had big success or have big stuff.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Even actually they just signed Kirby Yates as well. So
- 13:08Speaker 1: just wanted to get your thoughts on some of these pitchers,
- 13:10Speaker 1: whether you've watched them pitch or you've I don't know
- 13:13Speaker 1: if you cross paths with Yates at all, but and
- 13:15Speaker 1: with the young guys, like what you what you would
- 13:18Speaker 1: tell them, They're probably gonna come up to you, Like, well,
- 13:20Speaker 1: even pitched the Bigs for three years, I've gone through
- 13:22Speaker 1: some adversity pull up a chair, grab a beer.
- 13:25Speaker 6: What you got for me?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Drew? Yeah, I mean I've I've seen over the years,
- 13:30Speaker 2: like guys they cycled back through guys. I think it
- 13:33Speaker 2: was like some of the guys they did signed over
- 13:36Speaker 2: the years. I've seen some of these other guys pitch.
- 13:40Speaker 2: You know, again, we have there's a lot everyone's talented.
- 13:42Speaker 2: There's a lot of talented guys. I played with Kirby
- 13:45Speaker 2: in San Diego. We played together. You know, we have
- 13:48Speaker 2: guys who've been around and done things, and Kirby's close games.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Kirby's done a lot of back end stuff and he's
- 13:55Speaker 2: a great pitcher. You know, I've I after one of
- 13:59Speaker 2: the last interviews I called, Kurt called me. I told
- 14:01Speaker 2: them the same thing I told a counsel before. I'm like,
- 14:04Speaker 2: you use me. I have no ego about this, Like
- 14:07Speaker 2: I'm enjoying the game baseball, Like use me. However you
- 14:09Speaker 2: need to use me, and if you need anything from me,
- 14:11Speaker 2: just let me know. But you know that's that's my role.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So whatever they need to do with me, And you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I've I was again being kind of familiar with I
- 14:21Speaker 2: wasn't again. I was in spring training with the Angels
- 14:23Speaker 2: in twenty twenty four. So there's a lot of the
- 14:24Speaker 2: same guys that are still there, and there's a lot
- 14:27Speaker 2: of talent. There's a lot of talented guys there. I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I know that you read stuff about them taking flyers
- 14:33Speaker 2: on guys you know all the time. But again, these
- 14:36Speaker 2: are talented baseball players. It's not like you know these people.
- 14:40Speaker 2: It's not like we aren't good baseball players.
- 14:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Every it's a it's a really talented team. So I'm
- 14:47Speaker 2: excited to get in there, just bring training and meet
- 14:49Speaker 2: some of the guys I don't know, and you know,
- 14:52Speaker 2: get reconnected with some of the guys that do.
- 14:55Speaker 3: How well, what what big? What? How big of a
- 14:59Speaker 3: help was it? You have a relationship right with Mike Maddocks?
- 15:02Speaker 3: Do you not the pitching coach that's there, And you
- 15:05Speaker 3: don't know Mike Maddocks. I thought you knew him him before.
- 15:08Speaker 3: But was there familiarity somewhere with the staff other staff.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Members, I mean there was some before. I'm trying to
- 15:21Speaker 2: think I do know, uh what that that's the problem
- 15:24Speaker 2: is like I was with this team last year and
- 15:26Speaker 2: all the coaches changed.
- 15:27Speaker 3: It happens happened by Bussy's still there, so I mean
- 15:30Speaker 3: you still have bus.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And Bussy still there. You're right, I know Bussy, Darryl Scott,
- 15:35Speaker 2: I saw on the staff who I know from Colorado
- 15:43Speaker 2: when I was there back in the day. I'm sure
- 15:44Speaker 2: there's going to be more people. I mean, you know
- 15:47Speaker 2: guy Brady, Brady Anderson was around when I was with
- 15:50Speaker 2: in camp with them last year too, So there's a
- 15:53Speaker 2: lot of guys that are coming back through that I've
- 15:56Speaker 2: met at some point or another.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Okay, so that's good. So you have a little bit
- 15:59Speaker 3: of familiar because I always thought that was one of
- 16:01Speaker 3: the strangest things as a free agent when you sign
- 16:03Speaker 3: with the team and you go in and you're.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Like, I know nobody.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Maybe you might know a player or two right or
- 16:09Speaker 3: you know, and if you're lucky enough, you've had a
- 16:10Speaker 3: coach or somewhere else that you know. But if you
- 16:13Speaker 3: just go in there blind, you're like, I know nobody here.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Who do I talk to or do I hang out with?
- 16:18Speaker 3: What's where do I go?
- 16:20Speaker 4: And you've been with enough.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Teams now you've done it. But it's always strange when
- 16:23Speaker 3: you walk into a new clubhouse.
- 16:25Speaker 2: No for sure, yeah, for sure, But again, we're all
- 16:28Speaker 2: in the same boat in a different place. But again, Ei,
- 16:31Speaker 2: there's guys in the bullpen. I did all. I met
- 16:35Speaker 2: Jordan Mono already, I did all my like physical stuff
- 16:37Speaker 2: with them. We did the same day. And I know Kirby.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I know some of the other guys in the bullpen.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Stevenson I played catch with in twenty twenty four and
- 16:46Speaker 2: spring training every day, and you know, there's a hope
- 16:50Speaker 2: he was there. I know Darnauld. I met him this offseason,
- 16:55Speaker 2: but I've obviously met him before, so I know a
- 16:58Speaker 2: lot of these guys. It's not you know, it's going
- 17:00Speaker 2: to be pretty easy walking in there. I think this time.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Go through last year with the Cubs.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I'm always interested to know a team like that where
- 17:09Speaker 5: it's like, ah, you know, they made the move Tucker
- 17:12Speaker 5: Justin Steele goes down, Kate Horton comes comes in and
- 17:15Speaker 5: really solidifies himself. What was the feeling for you guys
- 17:19Speaker 5: going into the playoffs with a lot of things uncertainty
- 17:22Speaker 5: about Tucker, a guy that was your best hitter in
- 17:24Speaker 5: your lineup. Kate Horton obviously wasn't able to pitch and
- 17:28Speaker 5: that was a big detriment. What was the feeling in
- 17:31Speaker 5: the club casket? Was he talked to we talked to
- 17:33Speaker 5: Boyd earlier and you know, he's he's always he's positive, Matt,
- 17:38Speaker 5: So that's that's just that's just him. But what was
- 17:41Speaker 5: the true feeling when you guys were like, we're going
- 17:44Speaker 5: in we got to play a divisional opponent, like we
- 17:47Speaker 5: got this, and were you guys like we're going to
- 17:50Speaker 5: the World Series.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, we were feeling great. I mean, you know, the
- 17:55Speaker 2: Padres was I think they played They played before I
- 18:00Speaker 2: got there, so must have been earlier the season. So
- 18:02Speaker 2: going into that, you know, we were just going right
- 18:07Speaker 2: at it. And obviously the next round against Milwaukee we
- 18:13Speaker 2: played a good We played good against him all year
- 18:15Speaker 2: and had hit some back and forth in the second
- 18:18Speaker 2: half when they were on that hot streak. But we
- 18:21Speaker 2: felt really really confident going into that. I think the
- 18:23Speaker 2: biggest thing obviously the Cad Horton stuff. The timing of that,
- 18:28Speaker 2: you know, could have could have changed. But again, like
- 18:31Speaker 2: you know, Kate is, Kid's a gamer, and kid's a
- 18:34Speaker 2: great pitcher and he's gonna have a really good career.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So obviously the timing of losing him was a big
- 18:40Speaker 2: piece of something we were kind of missing in the
- 18:43Speaker 2: playoffs last year, and that would have you know, I
- 18:46Speaker 2: think it could have helped push us over the top
- 18:48Speaker 2: in a much better place. But you know, you you
- 18:52Speaker 2: work with what you have, and we were confident going
- 18:54Speaker 2: in and we had a we had a great group
- 18:55Speaker 2: of guys. We were all really close. We all did
- 18:57Speaker 2: stuff together, hung out together, and we were just having
- 19:00Speaker 2: a good time. You know, we're you know, no matter
- 19:02Speaker 2: where we were, we go to you know, you go
- 19:04Speaker 2: to any road trip, we're always together. So we had
- 19:08Speaker 2: a lot of confidence rolling into the playoffs this year
- 19:10Speaker 2: and we were just trying to keep that, keep that going.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I mean all the way into that Game five could
- 19:14Speaker 2: have gone either way. Obviously it didn't go in our favor,
- 19:17Speaker 2: but it was it was pretty awesome.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Okay, So now I want to ask you about moving
- 19:23Speaker 1: to the Angels here, Drew. This team hasn't been to
- 19:27Speaker 1: the postseason in a minute. And before I ask my
- 19:29Speaker 1: question too, you have a ring, right? Did you win
- 19:31Speaker 1: a ring with Boston eight twenty eighteen.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, so you've got that checked off right. Great career.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Like you said, hey, you're focusing on where you're going
- 19:42Speaker 1: to be these days too, so you're near the fam.
- 19:43Speaker 6: And all of that.
- 19:45Speaker 1: The Angels bar is probably lower than some of the
- 19:47Speaker 1: teams you've been a part of, just because Dan, they'd
- 19:49Speaker 1: be so happy to make the postseason. So I'm trying
- 19:53Speaker 1: to get kind of an answer out of you to
- 19:55Speaker 1: to see how you look at like the team goal
- 19:57Speaker 1: mindset with a club that hasn't even been to the postseason. Sure,
- 20:01Speaker 1: every player wants to win the World Series heading to
- 20:03Speaker 1: the year, but like when you look at how long
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's been and one of your upcoming teammates might trout
- 20:09Speaker 1: not being part of the postseason for a long time,
- 20:11Speaker 1: is that part of what drives you with a team
- 20:14Speaker 1: like this, aside from individually trying to be the best
- 20:17Speaker 1: that you can out of the bullpen?
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I I think that obviously everyone's goal
- 20:23Speaker 2: is to make to the postseason. I think that there's
- 20:26Speaker 2: different different ways teams are put together and different ways
- 20:32Speaker 2: you're able to put teams together. And I think that
- 20:35Speaker 2: you know, sometimes you know, you never know it could
- 20:39Speaker 2: happen year to year. You know, there's, like I said,
- 20:41Speaker 2: there's enough talent on this team to do to do
- 20:44Speaker 2: what or we need to do. Everyone obviously, you know,
- 20:46Speaker 2: depends on the health of everybody can really dictate which
- 20:51Speaker 2: way the season goes. I think that you know, you know,
- 20:56Speaker 2: the coaching staff, you know, guys are being brought in.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I think that can help help you get everyone moving
- 21:02Speaker 2: in the right direction. But again, it's the goal of
- 21:06Speaker 2: everybody to be in the playoffs. So you know, I
- 21:10Speaker 2: think that we'll you know, we'll see when we get
- 21:12Speaker 2: there and get everyone together. But you know, I think
- 21:15Speaker 2: everyone's going to be working towards that same same goal
- 21:17Speaker 2: because you know, even if you're if you haven't individual
- 21:20Speaker 2: goals to be good, it still should collectively be to
- 21:24Speaker 2: win games together. And if everyone can just stay on
- 21:27Speaker 2: the field and stay healthy and just grind games out,
- 21:30Speaker 2: I think I think any team could make the postseason.
- 21:33Speaker 3: To be honest, Yeah, we need we need my try
- 21:36Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Let's let's let's before we need him
- 21:39Speaker 3: back and so Drew help him get.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Back to the playoffs.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Please ask my question, please we need him great Drew,
- 21:46Speaker 3: before we let you go, do you know what tomorrow is?
- 21:48Speaker 3: Do you know what happens tomorrow?
- 21:51Speaker 2: I do know what happens tomorrow night, because I'll be there.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Oh, you're going. That was gonna be my next explain
- 21:56Speaker 3: to everybody what's happening tomorrow night for you.
- 21:59Speaker 2: There is a very large football game happening in Phoenix, Arizona,
- 22:07Speaker 2: Ole Miss versus Miami. I should have done this from live.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I should have done this interview live from there. I
- 22:13Speaker 2: mean that would have been much.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Scott went to Miami. Can we get a little wager.
- 22:18Speaker 6: On the game?
- 22:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we need something's got to happen here.
- 22:22Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 22:23Speaker 3: I don't know. You tell me, you guys are the
- 22:25Speaker 3: team spot and my team sucks, so I can't say no.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I think, I think, I don't know. I don't know
- 22:31Speaker 2: what you're gonna make me do. But I feel like
- 22:32Speaker 2: you should have to wear an old Miss jersey if
- 22:35Speaker 2: if all Miss wins on a show.
- 22:39Speaker 6: Okay, and then we need him to wear Miami.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Wear one the spring training one.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's that's the way to do it, right,
- 22:49Speaker 1: that's a fair trade off.
- 22:51Speaker 2: If you guys come through, I'll wear it that day
- 22:54Speaker 2: or something.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Absolutely, that's absolutely.
- 22:57Speaker 1: We'll be in Arizona, so okay, absolutely, virtual handshake on
- 23:01Speaker 1: that virtual there you go.
- 23:03Speaker 6: I'll have my old Miss jersey. That a j will
- 23:06Speaker 6: be happy to buy for me.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And can I get you a Lane Kiff in Jersey.
- 23:11Speaker 6: You can get.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Whatever whatever you want and then I'll get a Miami
- 23:16Speaker 1: Jersey sent to you.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Can about the Yeah, that might not fit him. He's
- 23:22Speaker 3: that's a real side one.
- 23:23Speaker 6: You know.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Can make.
- 23:26Speaker 2: A j can make bussy get me a jersey?
- 23:29Speaker 3: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 23:31Speaker 1: The Devin Hester one is like a uh, the Midrid.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Don know, it's the crap little thing.
- 23:41Speaker 4: We need to see that.
- 23:41Speaker 5: We'll get you that chewed up shoot up bubble gum,
- 23:47Speaker 5: that chewed up bubble gum, pitch your body. We need
- 23:49Speaker 5: to see that in a in a in a cut
- 23:51Speaker 5: off Miami Jersey.
- 23:53Speaker 2: No, nobody needs to see that.
- 23:55Speaker 3: That's for sure.
- 23:57Speaker 6: The well the game. That's awesome. Thanks for joining us.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck to your squad, and yes, we will,
- 24:05Speaker 1: hopefully for my case, see.
- 24:06Speaker 6: You in spring training with the Hurricanes Jersey.
- 24:09Speaker 2: All right, all right, appreciate you.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Thanks Drew.
- 24:15Speaker 1: So, Drew is part of the Angels and the Halo
- 24:20Speaker 1: Territory Show is part of the Ft Network.
- 24:22Speaker 6: They mentioned Drew the other day in the debut episode.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Mike Di Giovanna and former Angels basher Mark Trumbo talking
- 24:30Speaker 1: about what the new look Bullpen is going to bring
- 24:33Speaker 1: to the table Angels. Bullpen, by the way, was ranked
- 24:36Speaker 1: towards the bottom last year, and they made some nice
- 24:38Speaker 1: pickups here Drew, I just talked about Kirby Yates, so
- 24:41Speaker 1: we can get into but anyway, they'll cover all of that.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So check out Halo Territory part of the ft net.
- 24:46Speaker 4: We're trying.
- 24:47Speaker 3: They're trying.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yes, it feels like I'd like to see one big
- 24:51Speaker 1: position player move too. But again, they talked about Bellinger
- 24:56Speaker 1: on there, you talked about Boba Schett.
- 24:58Speaker 3: I'd like to see one big star picture slash bullpen
- 25:01Speaker 3: guy in these two.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I think they could be in play for Gino Suarez
- 25:04Speaker 1: as well. There's another third baseman that could be added
- 25:08Speaker 1: to the mix. I mean some my gosh, there was
- 25:11Speaker 1: one Angels fan on online who was talking about bringing
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yon Mancatta back, who actually was fine when he was playing,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but he can't stay on the field. But someone was like,
- 25:20Speaker 1: bear with me, like if he's healthy, like he was
- 25:23Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 25:23Speaker 6: I'm like, but he's.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Never Who was Jerry? This was Jerry on the chat.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I don't know, I mean, had two hundred and eighty
- 25:31Speaker 1: nine played appearances this year.
- 25:32Speaker 5: So since he's been in the minor leagues since he
- 25:39Speaker 5: got traded from the rest.
- 25:41Speaker 3: He had he had one good year.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I'm a pass on Yon Mancatta back for the Angels.
- 25:47Speaker 1: If I'm the Angels and you want to and I
- 25:50Speaker 1: know this sounds kind of silly, but you just got
- 25:53Speaker 1: rid of Brendone. Put someone in there that's going to
- 25:56Speaker 1: like play every day and just be the It's.
- 26:01Speaker 6: That's like the high end.
- 26:02Speaker 3: But I'm saying, but I'm like, you need you need
- 26:04Speaker 3: a Dirk Dog ballbuster. Yes, guy that can go in
- 26:07Speaker 3: there and show netto Christian Moore, Shana Well, Joe Adell,
- 26:11Speaker 3: those still younger guys like this is how a big
- 26:14Speaker 3: league veteran is supposed to go about it. I know
- 26:16Speaker 3: they have Trout, the Trout's been banged up a little bit.
- 26:18Speaker 3: He's not really a guy that's gonna They need a
- 26:21Speaker 3: guy that.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Will stir it up, right, I mean, Bregmant is that.
- 26:25Speaker 1: But I'm saying, unlikely they're going to be playing ball
- 26:29Speaker 1: for bred.
- 26:29Speaker 3: I know, but he would an ideal world, he'd be
- 26:31Speaker 3: a really good.
- 26:32Speaker 6: They're probably here's what's probably going to happen. They're probably going.
- 26:35Speaker 1: To trade for Arnado and make the Cardinals eat ninety
- 26:39Speaker 1: eight percent of the contract or something.
- 26:41Speaker 3: But if I because shows.
- 26:43Speaker 6: Up every day, yeah, like he will, Yeah, he'll say
- 26:46Speaker 6: shows Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 1: He's a hustler. He will set a tone over at
- 26:49Speaker 1: third base. And I think Geno Suarez would do that too,
- 26:51Speaker 1: though plays every day. He's really like always race high
- 26:55Speaker 1: as a clubhouse guy, or he's playing with him, either
- 26:57Speaker 1: of those guys. I just I want to see something
- 26:59Speaker 1: like that over at third base, to be like, hey,
- 27:03Speaker 1: the stain of what that was with the Rendon mess
- 27:06Speaker 1: is over.
- 27:06Speaker 3: You need, yes, you need somebody to not only let
- 27:08Speaker 3: the fans and the people, but the players like kind
- 27:12Speaker 3: of turn the page, as someone said, turn the page.
- 27:15Speaker 6: M h.
- 27:15Speaker 4: I love I love some of their young core.
- 27:18Speaker 5: And I think if you're a veteran guy on a
- 27:20Speaker 5: one year deal or even like an Aeronado, like go
- 27:23Speaker 5: to California, you get to play with Trout, like Trout
- 27:27Speaker 5: is still as much as people are like, oh, he's
- 27:29Speaker 5: injured all this stuff, like he's still like he's an anomaly.
- 27:32Speaker 5: You you you want to. I feel like some guys
- 27:34Speaker 5: still want to play with him. They want to see
- 27:35Speaker 5: what he's about Joe Adele had a great year. Obviously
- 27:38Speaker 5: defensively he needs some help. Netto supposedly has that. Aura
- 27:43Speaker 5: ran Hifo had a down year, but the year before
- 27:45Speaker 5: he was awesome. Shane Well's like Mark Grace, like, I.
- 27:50Speaker 6: Just agent all right?
- 27:52Speaker 3: Hefo is gone, Yeah, I think do your research. Scott,
- 27:57Speaker 3: you're gonna have blown up in the chat.
- 27:59Speaker 5: No, no, my bad, my bad. I hit two o
- 28:01Speaker 5: nine in the big leagues. What am I talking about?
- 28:03Speaker 5: I'm an idiot.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Why'd you say do my research?
- 28:07Speaker 3: Because there's a guy in the chat that you just
- 28:08Speaker 3: keep saying, Oh, do your research. We're trying to cover
- 28:10Speaker 3: seven hundred thousand players at the same time. Sorry if
- 28:13Speaker 3: we get.
- 28:14Speaker 6: Some stuff confused, what what did we mess up?
- 28:16Speaker 3: Nothing? Don't worry about. It's not worth your time.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I heard you've been getting like this is a day.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Some days I'm really in the chat, some days I'm
- 28:22Speaker 1: really not.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Today's my day in the chat.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm free agent right here.
- 28:28Speaker 4: It's a free agent.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah, okay. It's trying to keep up with seven hundred
- 28:34Speaker 3: I mean literally a thousand players and everyone that's a
- 28:36Speaker 3: free agent, especially on teams that we don't listen, no
- 28:39Speaker 3: offense to the Angels, but we don't talk about them
- 28:41Speaker 3: as much because they haven't been good.
- 28:43Speaker 6: No.
- 28:43Speaker 1: I mean it's a national show. We cover all thirty teams,
- 28:46Speaker 1: but we don't cover them all equally. We cover them
- 28:48Speaker 1: based on the news that breaks and the big games.
- 28:51Speaker 1: So you're going to cover the playoff teams more. Yes,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I think that's all.
- 28:54Speaker 6: That's all fair.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Baseball is definitely one of the more difficult sports to
- 28:57Speaker 1: keep up with. It's actually why it prevents some casual
- 29:01Speaker 1: fans from really being involved if you're not watching every
- 29:03Speaker 1: day and the transactions. Yeah right, Like most people, you
- 29:09Speaker 1: have a casual combo. You want to talk about Lebron,
- 29:11Speaker 1: you want to talk about some quarterbacks in the NFL,
- 29:13Speaker 1: like you can bs without knowing a lot baseball.
- 29:17Speaker 6: You can sound dumb in five minutes, Hit.
- 29:20Speaker 5: The subscribe button. Hit the subscribe button. Foul territory, best
- 29:24Speaker 5: baseball coverage that'll get you. You won't sound like an
- 29:27Speaker 5: idiot anymore. Banger rang, what A that's really nice of you.
