- 0:00This morning as we continue our journey through the 5th chapter
- 0:04of First Thessalonians, we once again look at the 17th verse
- 0:09which says that we are to pray without ceasing.
- 0:14The late Leonard Ravenhill was a British evangelist.
- 0:20He died in 1994. But listen to his words as he
- 0:25talks about prayer. He says no man is greater than
- 0:30his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is
- 0:35playing. The people who are not praying
- 0:40are straying. The pulpit can be a shop window
- 0:46to display one's talents. The prayer closet allows no
- 0:52showing off. Poverty stricken as the church
- 0:56is today and many things, she is most stricken here in the place
- 1:02of prayer. We have many organizers, but few
- 1:08agonizers, many players and payers, few prayers, many
- 1:18singers, few clingers, lots of pastors, few wrestlers, many
- 1:29fears, few tears, much fashion, little passion, many
- 1:39interferers, few intercessors, many writers, but few fighters.
- 1:51Failing here, we fail everywhere.
- 1:57The ministry of preaching is open to a few.
- 2:00The ministry of prayer, the highest ministry of all human
- 2:05offices, is open to all. He had his finger on the pulse
- 2:14of the modern church. He recognized that there were
- 2:19very few people committed to prayer.
- 2:25I don't know about you, but as you spend each day, there are
- 2:30times throughout the day that you waste.
- 2:35I think we'd all be have to be honest and say, yeah, there this
- 2:39was a wasted hour, or this was a wasted few minutes, or this was
- 2:43a wasted part of my day. I can guarantee you that there's
- 2:47one part of your day that you could honestly say is never
- 2:52wasted, and that's the time you spend in prayer.
- 2:58That time is never wasted. That time was always used to the
- 3:04highest degree. Yet the Bible says that we are
- 3:08to have an unceasing kind of prayer life and uninterrupted
- 3:13kind of prayer life. A life that's completely
- 3:17conscious of God all throughout the day.
- 3:21A life that's always in tune with the Spirit of God.
- 3:27A prayer that or life of prayer that that never ends, that never
- 3:30quits, that never gives up, that never gives in.
- 3:34Pray without ceasing. Peter would say it this way
- 3:40first. Peter 5 verse #7 Cast all your
- 3:44anxiety upon him, for he cares for you.
- 3:53Taken from Psalm 55 where the psalmist said cast your burdens
- 3:58upon the Lord and he will sustain you.
- 4:04I've come to realize that as I go through life, as it says in
- 4:09Luke 18 verse #1 we talked about last week, men, not always to
- 4:13pray and not to faint. You either pray or you faint.
- 4:17If you're fainting, you're not praying.
- 4:20Well, Peter says it this way. If you're not casting your
- 4:24burdens upon the Lord, you're crashing under the burdens that
- 4:30you bear you to cast all your anxiety, all your burdens upon
- 4:36the Lord. But so many times, when those
- 4:39fears arise, when those anxious thoughts come, when the
- 4:45nervousness begins to envelope us, very rarely do we cast it
- 4:51upon the Lord. Yet those who pray without
- 4:54ceasing understand the the importance of living a God
- 4:59conscious kind of life that they might be able to offer up a
- 5:05prayer to their God knowing that he is the one who hears.
- 5:13In fact, the psalmist said in Psalm 65 these words, You who
- 5:19hear prayer to you, all men come to you who hears prayer to you
- 5:30all men come. Psalm 65, verse #2 verse #4 He
- 5:36says, how blessed is the one whom you choose to bring near to
- 5:43you, to dwell in Your courts. We will be satisfied with the
- 5:50goodness of Your house, Your holy temple.
- 5:57The blessed man is the one who who God chooses to bring near to
- 6:01him. And the Bible says that that God
- 6:04is near to all those who call upon him.
- 6:09Psalm 145 But there's a qualifier to that.
- 6:15The Lord is near to all those who call upon him.
- 6:18And then it says to all who call upon him in truth, He's not near
- 6:25to those who don't call upon him in truth, only to those who call
- 6:30upon him according to his truth, because he is the God of truth.
- 6:35And yet God who hears prayer brings men near to him.
- 6:45And if we are near to God, then we ought to be able to commune
- 6:48with him because the privilege of prayer is that we have access
- 6:52to the throne room of God. When the veil was was torn in
- 6:58two at count, when Christ was on the tree at Calvary in the
- 7:04temple, the veil of the temple was torn in two.
- 7:07Access to the presence of God. The holiest of holies was
- 7:11granted to all men. That's why I love what it says
- 7:15in the, in the book of Ephesians, Ephesians chapter 2
- 7:19verse #18 For through him that is Christ, we both have our
- 7:24access in one spirit to the Father.
- 7:28And then in chapter 3 verse #12 Paul says, because of Christ, in
- 7:33whom we have boldness and confident access through faith
- 7:39in him, we have this access. We had this opportunity to
- 7:47always enter God's throne room and to call upon him.
- 7:54I, I love what the the songwriter said.
- 7:57Oh, oh, what peace we often forfeit.
- 8:01Oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry
- 8:05everything to God in prayer. Everything.
- 8:10Cast all your burdens upon the Lord.
- 8:13Not just some of them, all of them.
- 8:16Prayer is the great privilege of the believer.
- 8:21That is we, We can enter the throne room of God and we can
- 8:26call upon our God to do great and mighty things.
- 8:32So last week we, we began to talk to you about some of the,
- 8:35the principles surrounding prayer, telling you that it that
- 8:40it, that certifies my dependency upon God.
- 8:46Nothing certifies your dependency more than your prayer
- 8:49life. That's why Paul says pray
- 8:51without ceasing. He gives these commands.
- 8:54Be joyful, be prayerful, be thankful.
- 8:57Why? Because this is the will of God
- 8:59in Christ Jesus concerning you. These three commands are the
- 9:01will of God for your life. You need to be joyful, prayerful
- 9:05and thankful in all things. And as believers in Christ, we
- 9:11we we hasten to obey the commands of God.
- 9:14Listen to what the psalmist said in in Psalm 119, verse #60 I
- 9:19hastened and did not delay to keep your commandments.
- 9:24That's the, that's the heartbeat of the believer.
- 9:27I hastened and did not delay to be joyful.
- 9:32I hastened and did not delay to be prayerful.
- 9:38I hasten and did not delay to be thankful.
- 9:42In fact, he goes over and says this in verse #112 of Psalm 119.
- 9:46I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes forever
- 9:52until the very end. I've determined in my heart that
- 9:56I perform Your commandments, Your statutes forever.
- 10:00So I will be joyful forever. I will be prayerful forever.
- 10:06I will be thankful forever, even until the very end.
- 10:11That's the heartbeat of the believer.
- 10:14So Paul rattles off his commands.
- 10:19Be joyful, prayerful, and thankful.
- 10:23I love what Leon Moore said in his book Heart Cry for Revival.
- 10:28He said it is not possible for us to spend all our time with
- 10:32the words of prayer on our lips, but it is possible for us to be
- 10:36all our days in the spirit of prayer, realizing our dependence
- 10:41upon God for all that we have in our, realizing something of His
- 10:44presence with us wherever we may be, and yielding ourselves
- 10:49continually for the doing of His will.
- 10:52Where there is such an inward state, it will find outward
- 10:56expression in verbal prayer. And in this connection we should
- 11:01notice the frequent ejaculatory prayers throughout Paul's
- 11:06letters. Prayer was so natural and so
- 11:10continual with the great apostle that it found its way inevitably
- 11:15into his correspondence. That's the way it should be for
- 11:19us. Praying without ceasing it
- 11:23certifies our dependency upon God.
- 11:27Turn turn back with me, if you would, to to the book of Second
- 11:32Chronicles, a book that you probably read every day in your
- 11:36devotions. But Second Chronicles chapter 20
- 11:44and I want to show you how how prayer certifies our dependency
- 11:47upon the Lord. This is so important.
- 11:52Now it came about verse one after this that the sons of Moab
- 11:55and the sons of Ammon, together with some of the Edomites came
- 11:59to make war against Jehoshaphat. Then some came and reported to
- 12:04Jehoshaphat saying, a great multitude is coming against you
- 12:08from beyond the sea out of Iran. And behold therein in Getty.
- 12:16For those of you who've been to Israel, you know where in Getty
- 12:18is. It's in the, the, the wilderness
- 12:20of, of the Judean, the Judean wilderness.
- 12:23It's there. And that's where David will hide
- 12:25from the apostle, not from the apostle, but from Saul himself.
- 12:28Excuse me. And and it's a good place to to
- 12:31enter into Jerusalem because of all the mountain ranges that
- 12:33hide you. And they say, King Jehoshaphat,
- 12:39they've come against us. Verse 3 Jehoshaphat was afraid
- 12:44and turned his attention to seek the Lord.
- 12:49That's good. When you're afraid, what do you
- 12:52do? What do you turn your attention
- 12:55to? Jehoshaphat turned his attention
- 12:58to to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast sweat all
- 13:02Judah. So Judah gathered together to
- 13:04seek help from the Lord. They even came from all the
- 13:08cities of Judah to seek the Lord.
- 13:12Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem
- 13:17in the House of the Lord before the new court.
- 13:20And this is what he said. Oh Lord, the God of our fathers,
- 13:25are you not God in the heavens? He appeals to the preeminency of
- 13:32God, does he not? Our Father, who art in heaven,
- 13:39hallowed be thy name. Here is Jehoshaphat appealing to
- 13:42the God of the heavens, and he says, are you not ruler over all
- 13:49the kingdoms of the nations? Don't you rule over everyone?
- 13:55It speaks not only of his preeminence, but it speaks of
- 13:58his Providence that he is in complete control of everything.
- 14:01It says power and might are in your hand so that no one can
- 14:05stand against you. So he appeals to God based on
- 14:09his preeminence, based on his Providence, and based on his
- 14:13power as the Lord God of Israel. And then it says, did you not,
- 14:21oh our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before
- 14:25your people Israel, and give it to the descendants of Abraham,
- 14:30your friend forever? They have lived in it and have
- 14:34built you a sanctuary there for your name.
- 14:42Now he appeals to the promises of God, got me to promise to
- 14:46Israel, got me to promise to Abraham, and God has fulfilled
- 14:49that promise. So he's appealing to God based
- 14:52on his character and based on his nature.
- 14:55You are preeminent, you are providential, you're powerful,
- 15:03and you're God who keeps his promises.
- 15:06So he says, verse 9, should evil come upon us, the sword or
- 15:11judgment or pestilence or famine, we will stand before
- 15:14this house and before you, for your name is in this house, and
- 15:18cry to you in our distress, and you will hear, and you will
- 15:24deliver us. They appeal to the presence of
- 15:28God, that we will come to you. We will come to Your temple,
- 15:32where Your glory dwells, where You are, and we will appeal to
- 15:36You and You will deliver us. Now behold the sons of Ammon and
- 15:41Moab and Mount Seir, whom You did not let Israel invade.
- 15:45When they came out of the land of Egypt, they turned aside from
- 15:49them and did not destroy them. See how they are rewarding us by
- 15:53coming to drive us out from Your possession, which You have given
- 15:58us as an inheritance. Oh our God, You will not judge
- 16:02them, for we are powerless before this great multitude who
- 16:10are coming against us. Nor do we know what to do.
- 16:14But our eyes are upon you. That that's, that's, that's a
- 16:21dependent king. We don't know what to do, but
- 16:26our eyes are upon you. That was the the verse that that
- 16:32that Sandy, my first wife and I decided to put on a gravestone
- 16:36before she died. Many of you know that she had
- 16:40cancer and she suffered for 15 months and then she went home to
- 16:43be with the Lord. But we didn't know what to do.
- 16:46They had no idea. And so we cry out the Lord Lord,
- 16:50we don't know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.
- 16:56And when you live in fear or anxiety or uncertainty, what do
- 17:01you do? Do as Jehoshaphat did.
- 17:06He lived in dependency upon God and sought the Lord of the
- 17:10universe, whose presence was with Him, whose preeminence was
- 17:15seen, because He's the God of the heavens, who providentially
- 17:18works in the hearts of man, who's the all powerful God of
- 17:22the universe, who keeps His promises.
- 17:30Prayer certifies our dependency. Prayer challenges our
- 17:37spirituality. It challenges our spirituality.
- 17:41You know that nothing will challenge your spiritual walk
- 17:43with the Lord than your prayer life or lack thereof.
- 17:46Just ask yourself, how much time did you spend in prayer this
- 17:49morning before you came to church, or yesterday, or the day
- 17:52before that? Your spirituality will always be
- 17:56challenged. Remember, on the eve of the
- 17:58crucifixion, Christ took Peter, James and John into the into the
- 18:02depths of the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 18:04Keep watch, pray. I'm going to go over here for a
- 18:08while. And he went over to pray.
- 18:11He came back and Peter, James and John were asleep.
- 18:15He says, could you not keep watch with me for one hour, just
- 18:19one hour? The Bible says that he was in
- 18:22great torment, our Lord was. And all he did was ask them to
- 18:27keep watching, pray lest they enter into temptation.
- 18:32So he went away, came back again, and they were asleep
- 18:37again. You see, they were being
- 18:41challenged spiritually and the Lord knew that the the challenge
- 18:45before them was going to be so great that if they didn't spend
- 18:48time in prayer, they would not be able to handle the
- 18:50temptation. And guess what?
- 18:52They failed miserably when they were tempted, especially Peter
- 18:57when he denied the Christ. Nothing would challenge your
- 19:01spirituality more than your prayer life.
- 19:04And then #3 we left off this last week.
- 19:06It will confirm your loyalty. It confirms your loyalty, that
- 19:12is, to the Lord God Himself, that you are loyal to keep the
- 19:16commands of God. The Bible says in First Timothy
- 19:222 verse #1 that first of all, I urge that entreaties and prayers
- 19:28and petitions and Thanksgiving be made on behalf of all men.
- 19:34Paul is writing to Timothy. It's a pastoral epistle telling
- 19:36him how to set things in order in the church.
- 19:39He says in chapter 2 verse #1 First things first, that you
- 19:43should be in prayer for all men. You should be petitioning all
- 19:49men because the the ministry of the church is the ministry of
- 19:54prayer and that needs to be offered first.
- 19:58That's why over in Colossians 19 it says we have not ceased to
- 20:02pray for you. In Colossians 4/2 devote
- 20:06yourselves unto prayer, says in Second Timothy 13.
- 20:11Paul's prayers were night and day.
- 20:13Romans 1212 be devoted to prayer.
- 20:17Listen, when you pray it confirms one thing, that you are
- 20:23loyal to your God, to obey the commands of God.
- 20:27So it certifies your dependency, it challenges your spirituality,
- 20:33it confirms your loyalty. And then note this, it catapults
- 20:41your productivity. It catapults your productivity.
- 20:48In other words, without prayer, nothing is accomplished, but
- 20:53with prayer, everything can be accomplished.
- 20:58Turn back to me, if you would, to the book of Exodus, Exodus
- 21:01chapter 17, another book that you read every day in your
- 21:06devotions. Second Chronicles, the book of
- 21:09Exodus. In the book of Exodus, you have
- 21:12Israel's first conflict, first war.
- 21:18It's the first mention of Joshua.
- 21:20Joshua will be mentioned some 200 more times in the Bible, but
- 21:25the first mention is in Exodus chapter 17 because Joshua is
- 21:30being prepared to take on Moses's responsibility.
- 21:34Doesn't know that yet, but but that's what God's doing in the
- 21:37life of Joshua. And so they come to fight
- 21:42against the Amalekites, and this is their first conflict as a
- 21:47nation where they go to war. It says this in verse #8 Then
- 21:52Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rafidum.
- 21:56So Moses said to Joshua, choose men for us and go out fight
- 22:01against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself
- 22:05on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.
- 22:10Joshua did as Moses told him and fought against Amalek.
- 22:14And Moses, Aaron and her went up to the top of the hill.
- 22:19So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel
- 22:22prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.
- 22:29But Moses's hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put
- 22:34it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and her supported his
- 22:38hands on one side, one-on-one side, and 1:00 on the other.
- 22:44Thus his hands were steady until the sunset.
- 22:47So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the
- 22:54sword. Now you read that and you're
- 22:57thinking, OK, what does all that mean?
- 23:00Well, all throughout the Old Testament, you realize that when
- 23:03when Israel prayed, they would always pray, lifting their hands
- 23:06to God. The staff was a symbol of the
- 23:09power and presence of God. So Moses went up into a hill
- 23:13with Aaron and her, and he was going to beseech the Lord.
- 23:18He was going to pray to the Lord.
- 23:19He was going to intercede on behalf of Israel as they went to
- 23:24war. Joshua would carry the sword,
- 23:28Moses would carry the staff, and he would begin to communicate
- 23:32with his God by holding his hands up and appealing to God
- 23:37for his strength, for the power. But when his hands began to
- 23:43fall, Amalek prevailed. But when his hands went up
- 23:47again, Israel prevailed. And it went through this over
- 23:51and over again and lost. The text says, it says that
- 23:54Moses hands were heavy. Moses was becoming weary.
- 24:02This is very important. Why?
- 24:06Because listen to the book of Deuteronomy, the 34th chapter,
- 24:10right before Moses dies in Deuteronomy 34, he's 120 years
- 24:14old. And it says although Moses was
- 24:17120 years old when he died, his eye was not dim, nor his vigor
- 24:24abated, in other words, nor was his strength gone.
- 24:30So go back now to exit 17 and say, why were his hands heavy?
- 24:33Was he, was he getting old? Was he weak?
- 24:36Oh no, his vigor never abated. He was strong even to the day he
- 24:40died, but that emphasized the fact that Moses was interceding
- 24:46on behalf of Israel as he would appeal to the power and the
- 24:52protection and the presence of God on behalf of the nation of
- 24:56Israel. And intercessory prayer is not
- 25:02light work, it's hard work. The effort is intense.
- 25:08That's why it says of Epaphras in the Colossians 4 verse #12
- 25:11that he labored fervently in prayer.
- 25:15Because prayer is hard work. Satan would do all he can to
- 25:20keep you off your knees. He'll do all he can to keep you
- 25:23from communing with your God. He wants you to do everything in
- 25:27the energy of the flesh. He doesn't want you to live in
- 25:29dependency upon God. Why?
- 25:32Because he knows that if you do, the power of God will be
- 25:34displayed, and great things will take place, and knows it.
- 25:38Says this verse 14. Then the Lord said to Moses,
- 25:42write this in a book as a memorial, and recite it to
- 25:47Joshua. Write it down, recite it #3 and
- 25:52remember it. He says that I will utterly blot
- 25:56out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.
- 26:00Remember this. Why?
- 26:02See, you have to realize that Amalek was was a nation that
- 26:07came against Israel. But Amalek also is a symbol of
- 26:12the flesh and a symbol of sin and a symbol of all those things
- 26:17that take us away from God. And that's why prayer is so
- 26:21hard, because when you're praying, you're moving away from
- 26:25those things. When you're not, you tend to
- 26:27move toward those things. And therefore we need to always
- 26:31be in the fervent spirit of prayer, beseeching the presence
- 26:35and power of Almighty God. Then it says this Moses built an
- 26:41altar, named it. The Lord is my banner, yave
- 26:45nisi. The Lord is my protector.
- 26:47The Lord is my victorious warrior.
- 26:49The Lord is my satisfier. The Lord's presence gave us
- 26:55victory. The Lord is my banner.
- 26:58And he said the Lord has sworn the Lord will have war with
- 27:00Amalek from generation to generation.
- 27:04The Lord is your inspiration. He's your banner, He's your
- 27:08flag, He's your protector. He's your inspiration.
- 27:12That's why there's so much perspiration.
- 27:15Why? Because he's the one who
- 27:16inspires us. Look at what the psalmist said
- 27:20in in Psalm 20, Psalm 20 verse #4 or let me read the whole
- 27:27thing to you. First one, may the Lord answer
- 27:29you in the day of trouble. May the name of the God of Jacob
- 27:33set you securely on high. May He send you help from the
- 27:37sanctuary and support you from Zion.
- 27:41May you remember all your meal offerings and find your burnt
- 27:43offerings acceptable. May grant you your hearts desire
- 27:47and fulfill all your counsel. We will sing for joy over your
- 27:51victory, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners.
- 27:58We will set up our inspiration because we will trust in God,
- 28:01the God who provides the power and His presence to give us the
- 28:05victory that we need. May the Lord fulfill your
- 28:08petitions. Now I know that the Lord saves
- 28:11his anointed. He will answer him from His holy
- 28:13heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.
- 28:17Some boasts and Chariots and some of horses, but we will
- 28:20boast in the name of the Lord our God.
- 28:23They have bowed down and fallen, but we have risen and stood
- 28:28upright. Save, O Lord, may the King
- 28:31answer us in the day we call. Wow.
- 28:36Talk about your dependency. Talk about, talk about your
- 28:40productivity. It happens because you live in
- 28:44dependence upon God and not in the flesh.
- 28:48You're trusting God to save your spouse.
- 28:51You're trusting God to bring the rebellious child home.
- 28:53You're trusting God for the salvation of your work mates and
- 28:57your classmates. You're trusting God for the for
- 29:00the for doing a a work in in your family with your friends.
- 29:04You're you're dependent upon God for everything.
- 29:07Why? Because that's the only way
- 29:09you'll ever be productive in the Kingdom of God is when you lie
- 29:13upon the King himself and trust in Him.
- 29:17Every one of us has to examine our own lives and realize there
- 29:20are so many things we want to see happen.
- 29:23We we want our family members saved.
- 29:25You can't save them. Only God does that.
- 29:29God does that. Listen to EM Bounds, if you've
- 29:34never read a work on prayer, read the multitude of volumes
- 29:39that EM Bounds has written on prayer.
- 29:43It will convict you so much that you'll want to stop reading.
- 29:47But you need not stop reading. You need to continue on.
- 29:50But this is what he says. Talking to men for God is a
- 29:54great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still.
- 30:02Think about that. Talking to men about God's a
- 30:05great thing, but what's greater than that?
- 30:09Talking to God about that man, they says this, he will never
- 30:16talk well and with real success to men.
- 30:21For God who has not learned well how to talk to God for man, that
- 30:30is just so good. That's because we think we can
- 30:33convince men. We think we can persuade men.
- 30:37We think we can. We can convince our husband or
- 30:39wife to be saved or our kids. You can't, just can't.
- 30:44So talk to God about that person.
- 30:48As you talk to God about that person, watch what God does in
- 30:51the life of that person. Because you see, your priorities
- 30:55are set in order. You're trusting God to catapult
- 31:01all productivity. So God gets all the glory.
- 31:05See, we want to want to get the glory.
- 31:07Yeah. I LED my son or daughter to the
- 31:09Lord, or I LED my friend to the Lord.
- 31:10No, you didn't. You didn't lead them anywhere,
- 31:14God sought them. God saved them.
- 31:18God just used you as a vehicle, probably 1 of many vehicles over
- 31:22their lives to show them the direction of the Kingdom of God.
- 31:28God saves trust in Him to accomplish His great work.
- 31:36Prayer is that which certifies my dependency, challenges my
- 31:41spirituality, clarifies my loyalty, catapults my
- 31:45productivity. Prayer is that which
- 31:49characterizes my ministry. Prayer is the ministry prayer.
- 31:59Without prayer, there really is no ministry.
- 32:02It's just work done in the flesh.
- 32:06The prayer is that which characterizes the ministry of of
- 32:09the pastor, of the people. It characterizes your ministry
- 32:14at home. I mean, think about it.
- 32:17It's just gathering your family around.
- 32:18Hey, let's pray. Let's bring this before the
- 32:21Lord. Let's just trust the Lord here.
- 32:25Let's see what God's going to do.
- 32:28You got conflict at school, Let's give it to the Lord.
- 32:31You got conflict with relationships?
- 32:33Let's talk to the Lord about it. Let's just cast our burden upon
- 32:37the Lord you, you have situations that you're you're in
- 32:41need of. Lord, we need you to take care
- 32:43of this. We need you, Lord, to deal with
- 32:46these things. It characterizes our ministry.
- 32:50That's why a couple of weeks ago we took you to Acts chapter 4,
- 32:52Where, when, when the city of Jerusalem or the leaders of
- 32:55Jerusalem came against the apostle said you cannot speak
- 32:57anymore in his name. What do they do?
- 32:58They went right to prayer as a community of believers and the
- 33:03whole place was shaken and they continue to speak the word
- 33:05boldness. Why?
- 33:06Because prayer catapults our productivity and characterizes
- 33:10our ministry. Prayer is the mainstay of every
- 33:18ministry. Your ministry to your wife, to
- 33:21your children, your ministry at church.
- 33:23It's all about prayer and commit committing everything to the
- 33:28Lord. Prayer is that which cultivates
- 33:32our maturity. Prayer cultivates our maturity.
- 33:36Prayer is a discipline like, like, like Bible study is a
- 33:39discipline, like meditation is a discipline.
- 33:45So prayer is, is a discipline. We discipline ourselves unto
- 33:49unto goddiness. And it's a hard work.
- 33:52It's a strenuous work because Satan will always bring
- 33:55interruptions to you, always take you away from spending time
- 33:58in prayer. So Paul knows that.
- 34:00So he says, pray without ceasing, always be prayerful,
- 34:03always be communing with the Lord as you go through the day.
- 34:06Why? Because this is what cultivates
- 34:08your maturity. This is what Paul says in
- 34:11Colossians chapter 1. For this reason also verse 9.
- 34:15Since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you,
- 34:18and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His
- 34:21will within all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you
- 34:24will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord to please Him in all
- 34:27respects, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the
- 34:31knowledge of God. Strengthen with all power
- 34:33according to His glorious might, for the attain of all
- 34:36steadfastness and patience. Joyously give me thanks to the
- 34:39Father who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the
- 34:45Saints. This is so beautiful.
- 34:48Paul knows that in order for them to be filled with the
- 34:51spirit of knowledge and and the spirit of his will, he's to pray
- 34:56that God does that. Over in Colossians 4 verse #12
- 34:59it says that Paul tapas labourly interceded for them earnestly so
- 35:08that they may stand perfect in the Lord.
- 35:12He prayed for his people. Paphos was the pastor in the
- 35:15Church of Colossae, so he prayed for his people.
- 35:17They would stand fast, stand perfect, stand mature in the
- 35:23Lord. Prayer is that which cultivates
- 35:26our maturity. Prayer is that which conquers
- 35:32our infirmity. You have an infirmity today.
- 35:37It might be a physical infirmity, It might be a
- 35:41spiritual infirmity, but prayer is that which conquers that
- 35:47infirmity. So we give it to the Lord, we
- 35:51bring it before the Lord. We commune with the Lord all
- 35:55throughout the day. The Bible says in in James
- 36:01chapter 5, these beautiful words, Is anyone among you
- 36:07suffering? Then they must pray.
- 36:10Let's pray. That's what you got to do.
- 36:13And then he says, is anyone cheerful?
- 36:19He's singing praises. Is anyone among you sick?
- 36:24That's not physical illness. It's a word that means weary,
- 36:28worn out, tired, that he must call for the elders of the
- 36:33church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with the oil
- 36:36in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offering in faith
- 36:39will restore the one who is weary, and the Lord will raise
- 36:47him up. If he's committed sin, they will
- 36:50be forgiven him. Therefore, confess your sins to
- 36:52one another and pray for one another so he may be healed.
- 36:57The effective prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.
- 37:03What is your infirmity today? Paul had a physical infirmity.
- 37:06Second Corinthians chapter 12. So what did he do?
- 37:09He prayed, He prayed about this three times that the Lord would
- 37:15remove it. And God said, no, I'm not
- 37:21removing your infirmity. In fact, my grace is sufficient
- 37:25for you. In fact, you will be made
- 37:29perfect through your infirmity. Whatever that infirmity was.
- 37:35None of us knows, and it's good that we don't know because we by
- 37:39nature would compare our infirmity with Paul's infirmity.
- 37:43You can't do that. But the Lord said, my grace is
- 37:47sufficient for you. My power will be made perfect in
- 37:52your weakness. You ever notice that sometimes
- 37:56God allows an infirmity to come our way and never leaves us, so
- 38:00that we can depend upon Him for everything and learn to trust
- 38:05Him all the while? And Paul did.
- 38:09Paul was a dependent man. But but prayer certainly is that
- 38:16which conquers our infirmity. Prayer also combats our
- 38:23adversary. Prayer is the combat against
- 38:28your adversary. That's why over in Ephesians
- 38:31chapter 6, Paul says these words in verse 18 as he concludes this
- 38:36whole series on the armor of God.
- 38:38He says with all prayer and petition, pray at all times in
- 38:41the Spirit. And with this in view, be on the
- 38:43alert with all perseverance and petition for all the Saints, And
- 38:47pray on my behalf that the utterance may be given to me in
- 38:50the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the majesty
- 38:53of the Gospel. Prayer is is not a part of the
- 38:57armor. Prayer is woven in and around
- 39:00each and every piece of the armor.
- 39:04As you put on the helmet of salvation, as you take up the
- 39:06sword of the Spirit, as you, as you put on the the breastplate
- 39:09of righteousness, you do it in the spirit and attitude of
- 39:11prayer with all petitions. Why?
- 39:14Because prayer combats the adversary.
- 39:21Prayer is that one Ave. we have by which we are able to overcome
- 39:27our enemy. And so Paul says, pray
- 39:31unceasingly, pray, always pray without ceasing, be in the
- 39:37spirit of prayer all day long. Never give up, never give in.
- 39:41Just keep communing with your God because you are conscious of
- 39:45His presence and His power as you walk through the every
- 39:49single day prayer to give you another one.
- 39:57I'm not sure how many I've given you calms your anxiety calms
- 40:03your anxiety. That's good because at times we
- 40:08all can become anxious, but it calms your anxiety.
- 40:14That's why Paul says over in the book of Philippians.
- 40:19The 4th chapter of those very familiar words, but I'll start
- 40:24in verse #4 because it says rejoice in the Lord always.
- 40:30So He's saying be joyful. Be joyful before you're
- 40:35prayerful. Be joyful.
- 40:39Why? He says, let your gentle spirit
- 40:43be known to all men. The Lord is at hand, the Lord is
- 40:49present. You can rejoice in the Lord
- 40:52because the Lord is near. You can rejoice in the Lord
- 40:55because the Lord is present. And then he says this.
- 41:00Be anxious for nothing. Why?
- 41:03Because the Lord is near. Do you know why we become
- 41:07anxious? It's because we don't perceive
- 41:10that the Lord is near. Listen, when I walk with my
- 41:17children when they were younger, they were never afraid why?
- 41:22Their father was with them. They had No Fear of anyone else.
- 41:28And if a dog came out and started barking, they would just
- 41:29cling to my leg because I was near.
- 41:33They weren't afraid because their father was near.
- 41:39When you're afraid, it's because you don't perceive the nearness
- 41:43of God. He is near to all those who call
- 41:47upon him, to all those who call upon him.
- 41:48In truth to you, O Lord, who hear prayer, all men come, and
- 41:55you draw them near to you the Lord is near.
- 41:58Therefore be anxious for nothing but everything by prayer and
- 42:02supplication with Thanksgiving. Be joyful, be prayerful, be
- 42:08thankful with Thanksgiving. Let your requests be made known
- 42:12to God because He's near and the peace of God where it surpasses
- 42:21all human comprehension will guard your hearts and your minds
- 42:28in Christ Jesus. So God does someone that Paul
- 42:33says you got to pray without ceasing.
- 42:36It's so important. Back in 17 71, James Montgomery
- 42:49wrote these words. Prayer is the soul's sincere
- 42:54desire, uttered or expressed, the motion of a hidden fire that
- 43:01trembles in the breast. Prayer is the simplest form of
- 43:06speech that infant lips can try. Prayer, the sublime of strains
- 43:13that reach the majesty on high. Prayer is the contrite sinner's
- 43:19voice returning from his ways, while angels in the songs, in
- 43:26their songs rejoice and cry. Behold, he prays, O thou by whom
- 43:32we come to God, the life, the truth, the way, the path of
- 43:37prayer, Thyself has trod. Lord, teach us how to pray.
- 43:46I would trust that you are learning to rejoice always and
- 43:52to pray without ceasing. And next week we'll look at what
- 43:58it means to give thanks in everything.
- 44:02Let's pray together. Lord.
- 44:03We are grateful for today, for the time that we could spend
- 44:07together as a church, as a church family.
- 44:11Pray that, Lord, the word of the Lord would seep deep into our
- 44:15hearts and that we would be men and women of unceasing prayer.
- 44:23Forgive us, Lord, for for not coming to you or communing with
- 44:28You as we should. Forgive us, Lord, for not
- 44:31recognizing that you are near, You are here, You are present
- 44:35with us. We cling to You because you are
- 44:40a banner. You are inspiration, You're our
- 44:43strength. Maybe live in the light of that.
- 44:48So many people here are going through things that Lord, they
- 44:52wish they were not involved in, they wish they didn't have to
- 44:55handle today or tomorrow, this week.
- 44:59But the pressures of of everyday life, the pressures of family,
- 45:03the difficulties that arise, they're insurmountable at times.
- 45:10Help us Lord to learn dependency upon you.
- 45:15Help us to learn as as King Jehoshaphat learned.
- 45:19Lord, we don't know what to do, but our eyes they are upon you.
- 45:25Why? Because Lord you know what to
- 45:27do. And we just leave it all in the
- 45:30hands of the all powerful God of the universe, who is the creator
- 45:35of heaven and earth and all things in it in Jesus name,
- 45:41Amen.
