  me my summer break just in case. Anybody gives a damn is from

  like 10 things. I'll have to do 100, got it.

  I am working my way through the chaos of returning to campus.

  Great, right. Oh, I had to share with you

  Clyde. Somebody said somebody said,

  since you've become a head coach, you clearly have lost all
• 3:19
  abilities to prepare to produce the ties for Clyde anymore.

  You know what listen that that's not.

  It's not about the head coach. It's not that there was just a

  lot going on in the last nine months, you know, but the ties
• 3:40
  for Clyde will return. That's not the first time I've
• 3:44
  heard that they will return, they will return.

  I have to, I have to restore, you know, the visual Integrity
• 3:51
  of the show. At some point I was always told,

  I was told that Clyde is usually not now that he's the head
• 4:00
  coach. That's funny.

  That's actually funny intentionally and I'm going to

  make you talk about it. Governor, the swc governor today

  to make you talk about it. I'm not gonna let you get by

  with it. How was your special day today?

  So it was it was super special got a call about two years ago

  from the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame saying that I had
• 4:31
  been inducted and I was going to be inducted into the Hall of
• 4:35
  Fame and huge, huge honor. And today we drove up to Waco
• 4:44
  jacking and myself and Good Fellowship.
• 4:50
  So basically, every member of the of the conference submits, a
• 4:55
  name, puts the name forward, and I was fortunate enough and I was
• 5:00
  honored to be put forward for for rice and but to get in that
• 5:06
  room with, you know, all of former, you know, former
• 5:10
  Southwest Conference Superstars. I mean, unbelievable stories.
• 5:17
  Will memories, you know, to see my former head coach and you
• 5:23
  know the Sprint's coach just to just catch up, you know.
• 5:30
  And but overall I mean just just another wonderful moment for me.
• 5:36
  And yeah, 11, I'll cherish for life.
• 5:40
  That's awesome. Congratulations, my man, thank
• 5:43
  you bro. For all you youngsters who don't
• 5:45
  understand how big of a deal the Southwest Conference was the
• 5:49
  conference has no longer been a conference for was a link, 25
• 5:54
  1995, so at 27 years and they're still inducting people into the
• 5:59
  hole just so we're clear. So thankfully this is like, it's
• 6:04
  like the, like, the Jordan brand, right?
• 6:06
  Jordan, I bought a pair of Jordan. 36 is the other day.

  My man stop playing it like you're 15.

  So like like today M&M submitted, Greg Hill.

  Think about that. Okay wow, what a speech.

  Oh my goodness. If I hope somebody videotaped it

  because it was epic. And yeah I mean got a chance to

  go on the stage with him and just you know man, it was really
• 6:35
  cool but that we're talking about the RC Slocum, Texas A&M 5
• 6:40
  Southwest Conference titles in a row, never lost over a five-year
• 6:43
  span, you know, so that was a good old days.
• 6:46
  Sighs faint it. Okay, Segway Segway.

  Let's get into it, Clyde. Alluded to it.
• 6:57
  But, you know, most of us that are returning to campus, or have
• 7:00
  not or getting ready to return to campus in the next month or
• 7:04
  so. But a question posed to the tile
• 7:08
  and Lamar reflect on those things that you were doing when
• 7:11
  you were a college coach. What are your must For your
• 7:15
  athletes, as they return to campus and return to activities.
• 7:19
  So, obviously, I'm not talking about the athletic training
• 7:23
  stuff, or like getting their classes but the things after
• 7:27
  that, what are some of the must that you have to set up so that
• 7:31
  you your group is successful? Yeah, I'll tackle this one
• 7:38
  first. I think the biggest thing is the
• 7:43
  dissemination of information. And getting them off, giving
• 7:48
  them basically a the tools to be successful for that year.
• 7:53
  Giving them all the information. They need understanding that
• 7:56
  whether they're freshmen, or whether they're seniors, it just
• 7:59
  a hectic time. And the one thing I always say
• 8:03
  to my athletes, this time of year is at least once a day,
• 8:07
  stop and breathe, and put your feet up.
• 8:10
  Because it just gets overwhelming and then you get
• 8:13
  behind because you're trying to do too much just, you know, be
• 8:16
  patient and then after about a week, everything just settles
• 8:19
  down. So I think the biggest thing for
• 8:21
  me is that this very important that my staff and I are
• 8:24
  available to them, to help them get through this time.
• 8:27
  Because I'm always, I used to be shocked at how even the seniors
• 8:32
  seem to be scattered rain during this time, you know?
• 8:34
  And he was well, they've been away from, they went away boxes
• 8:36
  summer, right? Did it to try to get him back
• 8:38
  into the routine? For me, it's getting them to the
• 8:43
  information. I need to start off on the right
• 8:45
  foot and as a staff being there as a support system for me.
• 8:51
  And I'll jump in. We have a very unique situation
• 8:57
  here. You know, UTSA is campus is
• 9:01
  very, it's small, compared to the general.
• 9:06
  Public UTSA was pretty much built as a commuter school.
• 9:10
  So we have like, five thousand beds on campus.
• 9:13
  So basically, you know, football and I think basketball are
• 9:19
  primarily on campus I think even them, there's they're starting
• 9:23
  to move off campus, but we were off campus from day one.
• 9:27
  We don't have any record prerequisites to be on campus
• 9:31
  that freshman year or anything like that.
• 9:33
  So, you know, it is a, it's an arduous task, especially when
• 9:41
  you have international athletes coming in.
• 9:44
  So, what we do is we make sure we assign mentors to all of our
• 9:50
  incoming athletes. It's and basically that Mentor
• 9:54
  you know is responsible for showing them around, helping
• 9:58
  them settle into the apartment. You know, they need to set up
• 10:02
  their bank accounts if they need to, you know, get over to campus
• 10:08
  to set up their classes to meet with their counselors all of
• 10:12
  that. And, you know, as a staff, you
• 10:15
  know, we had to be around as well.
• 10:16
  You have to make sure that we're, you know, facilitating.
• 10:20
  You know any Fires are tons of fires at pop up and you're
• 10:24
  constantly putting fires out and you know you got panicked, kids
• 10:28
  going, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.
• 10:29
  And you're having to you know really step in and say hey it's
• 10:33
  okay we're going to be all right and then you know, once we have
• 10:39
  that first team meeting but basically you know laying out
• 10:43
  our expectations and you know from that point on it's really
• 10:49
  about getting into a routine Mmmmm, right?
• 10:52
  Like when do you get up? When you eat breakfast, when you
• 10:55
  get to practice, when you go to campus, when is weights, you
• 10:59
  know, rinse and repeat. You know, in the sooner, the
• 11:02
  kids, the kids that are able to get into a routine faster, are
• 11:07
  the ones that, you know, I think tend to succeed the ones that
• 11:11
  don't and you know, fits and starts and stop from stop and go
• 11:17
  as Sarah, Lucia said things, then start to pile.
• 11:21
  Low things start to pile up. You missed this assignment, you
• 11:26
  miss this meeting, you miss this appointment, you know, and all
• 11:30
  of that, you know, we can't say it enough.
• 11:35
  I mean every single meeting you blink and you're in the middle
• 11:39
  of the semester and you're wondering.
• 11:41
  Okay, where am I? And it's so crucial that I get
• 11:46
  here so quickly. Exactly, it's so crucial that
• 11:50
  you get on a schedule, get on a schedule and you stick to it
• 11:56
  Sunday, you are looking at what's coming up the following
• 11:59
  week and you, you know, putting it in your head.
• 12:02
  Okay, I got this on Monday, this on Tuesday and you start to
• 12:06
  think ahead, all those things are crucial to your success here
• 12:11
  at UTSA. You know, it's Definitely not
• 12:14
  the situation where everything is you know under that umbrella
• 12:18
  that magic you know force field where everything is on campus
• 12:22
  where you step out of your dorm and there is a dining hall and
• 12:25
  you step out of your dorm and there's a training room and it's
• 12:28
  not like that you've got moving parts.
• 12:31
  So you know it's really crucial that we you know, we communicate
• 12:35
  that to our kids beforehand and then once they get here, we
• 12:39
  reinforced it. Hey you got it.
• 12:42
  You got to do these things to be successful.
• 12:43
  Peaceful. I will say that this is my least
• 12:50
  favorite time of the year as excited as I am, especially for
• 12:57
  this upcoming season, you know, Year to you got your own
• 13:01
  recruits in all this other stuff, right?
• 13:05
  It's just and I'm a person who Embraces and functions very well
• 13:09
  admits chaos. But during this time of year, I
• 13:14
  feel like I have a new profession.
• 13:15
  I feel like I'm a professional firefighter because every hour
• 13:21
  it is multiple fires and honestly, because I understand
• 13:27
  the spirit of this question, just read your e-mails and
• 13:33
  respond. To what you're supposed to do.
• 13:37
  Like so much of my day. Today would have been eliminated
• 13:41
  if people just read their emails and do what it says to do.
• 13:48
  And to the governor's Point, ya in a week or two or three will
• 13:53
  have a rhythm to this whole thing and it'll be chill, but
• 13:56
  it's not chill right now and it is massively annoying.
• 14:00
  So if you are an incoming, Athlete, especially a freshman,
• 14:07
  a new transfer, or you are the parents of freshmen and new
• 14:12
  transfers. Make sure they read their emails
• 14:15
  and make sure they go where they are supposed to go at the time
• 14:19
  that they are supposed to be there because between medical
• 14:24
  people compliance academics. We don't we don't practice for
• 14:29
  like a month. All this other stuff, it is
• 14:34
  maddening, how much of this have much of these little things
• 14:38
  takes up so much of my time right now and it's totally
• 14:42
  preventable. So yes, if you want to know the
• 14:45
  checklist, just just read emails please.
• 14:50
  If there was a way to incorporate your schedules, your
• 14:58
  assignments, your tasks, all All of that stuff into Tick-Tock,
• 15:02
  Instagram or Twitter or, oh my goodness.
• 15:06
  They'd be honesty on him, on with me.
• 15:09
  Yeah. But wait, we can in our
• 15:12
  individual accounts. We just make the announcement,
• 15:15
  Sam problem, solved. When I took over the cow
• 15:56
  program, in particular, we were dfl and I I got a lot of really
• 16:05
  good counsel from a few people. One of them on this this group
• 16:10
  of tiles. And the thing that I got from
• 16:15
  from the advice was creating culture is the hardest thing to
• 16:21
  do and culture starts with Process.
• 16:25
  So when I was, when I was last a head coach, what we did was we
• 16:33
  put out like a small will call them muffins.
• 16:40
  Okay. In our in our, in our offices
• 16:43
  that were removed by 9:30 a.m. We also had checklists for
• 16:51
  freshmen, sophomores Juniors, and seniors actually printed and
• 16:55
  put on the tables in front of said muffins and each kid to
• 17:01
  Clyde's. Point about reading emails was
• 17:03
  sent an email. If you have any issues with the
• 17:11
  check-in, and whatever process we got, you started in our
• 17:15
  office before 9:30. So literally, if you read your
• 17:21
  email to Clyde's, point you, it was paint-by-numbers come to the
• 17:26
  office. Get a muffin.
• 17:30
  Look at your checklist, take your checklist with you fill out
• 17:34
  as much of it as you could. At the end of the checklist it
• 17:37
  says come back to the office because for us we were just
• 17:41
  always like we want to be here for you, but we're not going to
• 17:44
  follow you around. So I wanted to see you at the
• 17:47
  beginning of the at the beginning of the process for the
• 17:49
  day and at the end of the process for the day, let me see
• 17:52
  what you got down on your checklist.
• 17:54
  Okay. Well you need this, this and
• 17:55
  this and you should be good. All right.
• 17:58
  Well, you should have done this first What what we that was The
• 18:01
  Way We Were active parts of participants in the process
• 18:05
  without going crazy because I was like I'm not going to follow
• 18:08
  these kids around not doing any of that.
• 18:11
  But I think that this time of the year The thing that they
• 18:18
  think that young people fight against the, most of the things
• 18:21
  that thing that they need is also thing, they need the most,
• 18:24
  which is structure if you give them paint by numbers they will
• 18:29
  fight you kicking and screaming but eventually follow the paint
• 18:32
  by numbers and be thankful for the paint by numbers and I won't
• 18:40
  lie. It's it's half of your first
• 18:43
  summer trying to put together the checklist because it's
• 18:47
  Tedious, right? But once you got it, put
• 18:50
  together, once you got that in place, like honestly, I give
• 18:55
  Solutions a lot of crap, right? Because he's been in the same
• 18:58
  place in the same position at a very high level for a long time.
• 19:02
  So at this point I'm it really and truly is checking in with
• 19:05
  the staff. Y'all got this.
• 19:07
  Okay. But the point is It's structure
• 19:11
  that he's put in place with them, which is structure that
• 19:14
  they put in place with the student-athletes, which is
• 19:17
  structure that altogether been put in place with the, you know,
• 19:20
  constituents across the country across the across the campus.
• 19:24
  And so like, I, if I was given any advice to any young head
• 19:28
  coach, new head coach, whatever is, you know, spend the time in
• 19:34
  the offseason wants to put together as good a checklist as
• 19:39
  you possibly can. And and then make them
• 19:43
  accountable to it. You know?
• 19:45
  Here, this is what you have to do.
• 19:47
  Because here's the thing, we all we all make fun because none of
• 19:50
  us played football at the Collegiate level.
• 19:52
  We all make fun of the fact that like Collegiate football players
• 19:56
  get a syllabus that starts. Like, I don't know if you guys
• 19:58
  knew this but Collegiate football players like they get
• 20:02
  daily and weekly to-do list and so and syllabi, basically for
• 20:07
  football, that includes things like wake up and Go to sleep.
• 20:12
  Like, I mean it all but says, breathe in and then exhale.
• 20:17
  It's crazy, but it is also how they get 110 people to be on
• 20:22
  time. Places they're supposed to be.
• 20:25
  You know what I mean? Like they get the masses to move
• 20:28
  and do what they're supposed to do.
• 20:30
  And so, to some degree, I kind of took the football Mantra
• 20:32
  which is like, all right, I'm gonna take thinking out of this
• 20:36
  for you, for the first two or three days that you're on
• 20:38
  campus, just do this. Do what's on the list?
• 20:42
  If you do everything on the list and then you're still in
• 20:43
  trouble, you know what I'll do with that.
• 20:47
  So that was always my thought process and year one it was a
• 20:50
  complete and utter shit show your to.
• 20:52
  It was a whole lot better by year 3 was.
• 20:55
  You know I was so lucious. Y'all got this.
• 20:58
  All right I'll see you at, you know, 345 since you don't have
• 21:03
  practice, you know, like that kind of thing.
• 21:07
  So, but I think structure structure is important.
• 21:12
  And, and, and trust him believe seniors fight against it as much
• 21:16
  as anything and they needed as much of the freshmen do because
• 21:21
  their issue is they think they got this.
• 21:24
  They don't, you ain't lying. Seniors are as disheveled as
• 21:31
  freshmen just for different reasons.
• 21:33
  This freshman are disheveled because they're like, I don't
• 21:36
  know what I'm supposed to do. I don't want to mess this up.
• 21:38
  Seniors are like, I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
• 21:40
  I don't want to mess this up. I'm trying to get up out of
• 21:42
  here. It's the same conversation.
• 21:45
  It's just you know, six and one-half dozen the other.
• 21:51
  Flip the coin to the other side. What are some of your must see
• 21:55
  for yourselves as the coaches as we return to school?
• 21:59
  And not that we left the offices.

  But now we're a little more in the offices.
• 22:05
  And that she asked Lamar, I just want to go first.

  Oh go ahead. Does he hey man, you've been
• 22:18
  coming at me all day today and I've been trying to be nice
• 22:21
  because, you know, you're my Elder Statesman and my big
• 22:23
  brother and all that. Exactly.

  So anyway, for me, the We must do this for oneself as a coaches
• 22:44
  is to remember to give tools and not enable.
• 22:51
  Almost young Lucius. But what do you mean by that for
• 22:55
  the coach? I don't think so.

  So I would like to throw in my two cents on that as much as I

  would love to emulate what you just said.

  But unfortunately, you have to be, will you have to be willing

  to let them fail? And I understand, that's the
• 23:26
  understand campus. You can't understand this.

  I understand the difficulty that I really I really, I really
• 23:32
  thought the governor was trying to speak here before.

  Oh my God. And then the moment gets better
• 23:41
  to Skies here exactly because Tyler That's what you got to
• 23:44
  say. Anyway so big fella knows it but

  but no, I hear what you're saying Lamar.

  I mean the teaching should begin immediately once they get on
• 24:04
  campus. Hey welcome to the rest of your
• 24:07
  life you're out from under, you know, Mom and Dad's watchful
• 24:11
  eye, you know, no one's wake. You up in the morning, to go to
• 24:16
  class. No one's, you know, driving you
• 24:19
  to school. No one's doing any of that,
• 24:21
  right? You now on your own, you're in a
• 24:25
  new city, you're in a new country.
• 24:26
  So you've got to make an adjustment.
• 24:30
  You've got to adjust the way you think the way things are
• 24:35
  operating your used to. You might have been used to
• 24:38
  taking, you know, a train to trains and a bus to get to
• 24:42
  practice every day and that was Okay, but now you can't figure
• 24:46
  out what shuttle to take to get to campus on time, 7-minute
• 24:51
  drive right here. Me, spare me with that, right?
• 24:56
  So, but as far as, you know, as far as myself, I'm I'm more
• 25:06
  concerned about as her Lucius said, Taking a breath every day
• 25:13
  because if you let or if you get tangled up in the Whirlwind, and
• 25:20
  the, the the tornado that is incoming freshman or incoming
• 25:24
  athletes that are frazzled and they're, you know, they're
• 25:28
  freaking out and they can't figure out, you know, how to set
• 25:32
  up their their account. They can't figure out how to put
• 25:36
  their name in for their bank account or, you know, Remember,
• 25:41
  whatever and you've got to sit there and just be calm, you have
• 25:47
  to be the calming influence in their lives.
• 25:50
  You got to make sure that they understand that they're okay.
• 25:54
  And this this chaos that they're going through, it will dissipate
• 25:59
  and they will be fine, right? So yeah I would say main thing
• 26:04
  is just, you know, be a be a calming presence, don't jump in.
• 26:10
  And become part of the craziness, warm.
• 26:15
  Ability existence e. You know, I think that, you
• 26:21
  know, with the taking a breath for me, everyday, when you're
• 26:26
  managing over 100 people, and I think the big thing is is like,
• 26:30
  you know, you have to set the tone, whether it's a serious
• 26:34
  tone or calming tone, whatever tone and needs to be set for the
• 26:37
  day starts at the top. And it starts with me, you know?
• 26:39
  So that for me, you know, as I like to say, I'm the strongest
• 26:43
  urge to drink, you know, still in the mail from the Mars home
• 26:45
  where Reggie Jackson, At the tone.
• 26:52
  Very much agree with the governor and sort of Lucius.
• 26:54
  I will just say that I am trying to get home every day before 9
• 26:59
  p.m. and I am trying to maintain my positive relationships with
• 27:03
  compliance and all the other administrative offices.
• 27:09
  That was so loaded. That was so loaded.

  So very lonely. Oh man, but that, that is one of
• 27:20
  the unwritten Right. Or the backhanded is, we make
• 27:25
  sure all the beginning of your forms.
• 27:26
  Get done to make sure that everyone tries to check off that
• 27:29
  list while we shut the door and do a little scream of
• 27:32
  frustration. But then be like, okay, we got
• 27:35
  to make sure we stay on their good side.
• 27:37
  All right, get er, done get, er, done student athlete experience.
• 27:43
  Yeah. And, and let me be clear with
• 27:46
  what I said, because I'm serious about this, like, in my job in
• 27:50
  my role, as As a director, right?
• 27:53
  I act I genuinely believe that one of my like key facets around
• 27:59
  here is to maintain good working relationships with the auxiliary
• 28:04
  staff. You know that we all have to
• 28:07
  deal with every day. When I say, we all, I mean me,
• 28:10
  right? Because if you're an assistant,
• 28:13
  that ain't that really isn't your gig.
• 28:15
  If you're the athletes, they don't see when you do something
• 28:19
  wrong or you don't. Onto an email or you aren't
• 28:22
  where you're supposed to be? They don't see all the drama
• 28:26
  that that potentially causes behind the scenes.
• 28:29
  And so, you know, luckily in my current position like all of
• 28:34
  those auxiliary people have been amazing to me but I've only been
• 28:37
  here one year. My you know what I mean?
• 28:41
  Like I'm still in very good graces with everybody.
• 28:44
  So I'm like, as as my team continues to grow and we bring
• 28:48
  in more and more new people we have to maintain.
• 28:51
  Then the standard that I have set in order to keep everybody
• 28:55
  happy and that is a very delicate dance, trust me on
• 28:58
  that, it is mind-boggling. Like if I, if you if, if we were
• 29:04
  to sit around and think about all the things you have to do to
• 29:10
  get to that first team meeting, where everybody is eligible,
• 29:16
  everybody is certified. Everybody can Sieve equipment.
• 29:22
  Everybody is in classes have all their classes.
• 29:27
  I mean, the average everyday person would be like, okay,
• 29:32
  you're doing this for what? You're getting paid what to do
• 29:36
  this and it's every single year you go through this.
• 29:43
  So I mean yeah and I look I'll be the first to tell you.
• 29:46
  I'm blessed I have an incredible staff around me and they take a
• 29:49
  lot off my plate. I'm very thankful for that and
• 29:53
  that's why they're employed. I'll just tell you from a, you
• 29:58
  know a slightly different perspective.

  Like what happens in my job is Chaos breaks out like I'm
• 30:06
  supposed to be the calm one, right?
• 30:08
  So like I'll give you guys a case in point.

  I had a kid who's been committed and then National letter of
• 30:15
