- 0:25Speaker 1: But March, I swear to you, I never thought you'd
- 0:27Speaker 1: find out.
- 0:29Speaker 6: Four finger discount dude.

- 0:58Speaker 2: you're really.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Action to her.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Ultimately we come to the bashl of professionalism that is
- 1:03Speaker 3: the all being a disc game network. We are joined
- 1:05Speaker 3: today by comedian Ray O Leary. If in fact, that
- 1:07Speaker 3: is your real name, Ray, because the Internet, which never
- 1:11Speaker 3: lies to us, indicates that your your real name might
- 1:13Speaker 3: be Matthew O Leary can to explain, sir.
- 1:15Speaker 4: You're doing it? What is it? A principal test? This
- 1:20Speaker 4: is going to go down as your worst episode.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Just so you know, to jump the shark at this point. Yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 2: we've already at the bar pretty light. Yes, but how
- 1:28Speaker 2: are you, ray Lar Larry is Let's go with ray Larry.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I'm great, thank you, very happy to be discussing all
- 1:33Speaker 4: things Simpsons with you guys. I've been a fan for
- 1:36Speaker 4: a long time, so's specifically of you guys and and
- 1:41Speaker 4: your yeah, your page. I've been deep in the in
- 1:44Speaker 4: the various Simpsons Facebook groups for a long time, so,
- 1:47Speaker 4: I mean, I'm excited to be here.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It's dangerous getting into those Simpsons groups. You find some
- 1:51Speaker 2: super fans in there.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah, compu Global, hyperbig in, rock bottom, tenuous and obscure Simpsons.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I'm in them all.
- 2:00Speaker 2: There's no escaping those weeds. Are you in as your
- 2:02Speaker 2: real name though, or do you have like an alias
- 2:04Speaker 2: in those groups?
- 2:05Speaker 4: Yeah? Double alias now, yeah, there's an international Man of Mystery.
- 2:12Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, obviously we here talk about the carriage Fani.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We're getting that in just a few moments though. But
- 2:15Speaker 2: you've got some upcoming too a day, so we plugged
- 2:17Speaker 2: those before we get underway today.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Yes, oh, thank you, Yes, Yes, I'll be touring a
- 2:22Speaker 4: new show next year. I think that'll go on sale
- 2:25Speaker 4: later this year. I think if it's out, so you know,
- 2:30Speaker 4: follow my social media at Ray Eleary Comedy for that.
- 2:33Speaker 4: And also we go into the UK in February and March,
- 2:36Speaker 4: touring all over England and Scotland and potentially Ireland. I
- 2:41Speaker 4: don't know if those dates have gone up here, but yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 4: there are some UK dates or UK and Ireland dates up,
- 2:47Speaker 4: so you check them out.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I'm glad you said rayo Leary Comedy because I'm not
- 2:51Speaker 3: sure if we actually alluded to the fact. Look, Ray,
- 2:53Speaker 3: of course you're I well know you do appear on
- 2:56Speaker 3: Have you been paying attention on Taskmaster? I don't think
- 2:59Speaker 3: we actually said front rarely recomedian? You're on door?
- 3:03Speaker 4: What do you do?
- 3:04Speaker 2: People listen to the show know him more than an LS.
- 3:06Speaker 2: It's okay either he's a comedian or wear it competent. Yes,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but yes, heading to the UK, how do you find
- 3:14Speaker 2: the difference in audiences when he had over there? Do
- 3:16Speaker 2: they any differences there or not? No?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Not not really. I don't know. I think maybe the
- 3:23Speaker 4: biggest difference is just that here in Australia there are
- 3:26Speaker 4: maybe a bit more used to used to me. But
- 3:28Speaker 4: otherwise I find the British and I guess Australasian sense
- 3:34Speaker 4: of humoris is very, very similar. And also when I
- 3:39Speaker 4: go to Britain, I mean often it is Australian and
- 3:41Speaker 4: New Zealanders come out and see me, so they make
- 3:45Speaker 4: up a big chunk of the crowd anyway. But yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 4: apart from that, maybe there's some slight language barriers with
- 3:52Speaker 4: my accent, but I've not yet digged in in America.
- 3:56Speaker 4: But that's where I expect it'd be the biggest, the big,
- 4:00Speaker 4: the big barrier to have to have to try maneuver over.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they very much don't get our sense of humor
- 4:06Speaker 2: all of the time.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Yes exactly, Yes, yes exactly. I don't really understand the Simpsons,
- 4:11Speaker 4: to be honest.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So well, I was actually wondering how I don't know,
- 4:17Speaker 3: synchronized or aligned the traditional Kiwi sense of humor is
- 4:23Speaker 3: with say, the Simpsons sense of humor. I mean, we
- 4:26Speaker 3: tend to sort of view it as universal. I don't
- 4:29Speaker 3: know if there are as many fans of the Simpsons
- 4:31Speaker 3: in New Zealand as there are in Australia.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I'd say yeah, I'd say so. I felt like, I mean,
- 4:36Speaker 4: I don't know what I was like growing up in Australia,
- 4:37Speaker 4: but in New Zealand, the Simpsons were on constantly. There
- 4:41Speaker 4: was Yeah, I don't think there was a night where
- 4:42Speaker 4: the Simpsons wasn't on. There was at least there was
- 4:45Speaker 4: one cable channel. Well yeah, we wouldn't say the term cable,
- 4:48Speaker 4: but there's one our equivalent of Fox Tell that would
- 4:51Speaker 4: run I think at least five Simpsons episodes a day
- 4:55Speaker 4: on the weekend. You know, it was all just always
- 4:58Speaker 4: on in the evening. It was omni present. So it
- 5:00Speaker 4: was yeah, yeah, it was. It was huge in New
- 5:04Speaker 4: Zealand and and also I'm pretty sure the Simpsons writers
- 5:07Speaker 4: were influenced by things like Monty Python and the UK
- 5:11Speaker 4: sensibilities and stuff, which maybe makes it explain why it's
- 5:13Speaker 4: so Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Worldwide, I find the Simpsons is great for finding new
- 5:18Speaker 2: friends as well. You mentioned before that when you go
- 5:20Speaker 2: to the UK sometimes you have that language barrier. You
- 5:22Speaker 2: don't some people might not know you as much as
- 5:24Speaker 2: they know you when you're in Australia. I'm sure if
- 5:25Speaker 2: you drop a couple of Simpsons gags in your routine,
- 5:29Speaker 2: I start seeing. But what was your all of your
- 5:35Speaker 2: earliest memories of the Simpsons.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Oh, that's a good question. I don't. I don't know
- 5:39Speaker 4: if I have any particular concrete memories, but I definitely
- 5:44Speaker 4: would remember I'd watch the TV, and I think I
- 5:47Speaker 4: would go and try and recite some of the gags
- 5:49Speaker 4: that I liked to mum or she was like trying
- 5:52Speaker 4: to wash the dishes or prepare for next day, or
- 5:54Speaker 4: you know, after I'd eating all their food and was
- 5:56Speaker 4: doing nothing and she was not interested. I was, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 4: I was bombing. I was bombing in the kitchen.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Can you recall can you recall any of the particular
- 6:06Speaker 2: gags that what that it might have been?
- 6:08Speaker 4: No? No, no, sorry, man, I'd butcher and I'd butcher
- 6:11Speaker 4: them now. But I definitely remember liking the Simpsons and
- 6:14Speaker 4: a But I'm sure as a kid what primarily drew
- 6:18Speaker 4: me to it was the fact that it was a cartoon.
- 6:20Speaker 4: You know, like I just assumed it was for me
- 6:23Speaker 4: because it was a cartoon, and there's no way I
- 6:25Speaker 4: understood really anything of what was going on, Whereas now
- 6:29Speaker 4: I felt like, you know, you watch the comedy and
- 6:31Speaker 4: it's it's more sophisticated that I think what a kid
- 6:34Speaker 4: would pick up on.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, or you were mentioning twists before we started recording
- 6:38Speaker 2: that you went back last year with the year before,
- 6:39Speaker 2: watching season three through to nine, and there's just so
- 6:42Speaker 2: many gags that you don't pick up on and when
- 6:44Speaker 2: you're a kid and you just appreciate the show on
- 6:46Speaker 2: a whole new level. I've just started watching the show again.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Obviously watch it all the time for the podcast, but
- 6:51Speaker 2: I've got a seven year old and it just turned
- 6:53Speaker 2: five year old hay b if the Holy My daughter
- 6:54Speaker 2: turned five to day as we record this. But they've
- 6:56Speaker 2: just started watching The Simpsons and we've gone back to
- 6:58Speaker 2: the start and we're watching them through and I'm watching
- 7:00Speaker 2: this and I'm laughing at things and going, why is
- 7:02Speaker 2: that funny? I'm going you'll understand eventually, or if I
- 7:05Speaker 2: can be bothered to explain it, I'll also explain the
- 7:07Speaker 2: gag as well. That's just what's so great about The
- 7:09Speaker 2: Simpsons is there's there's so many layers to it. There's
- 7:11Speaker 2: gags are the kids, gags for the adults, and the
- 7:13Speaker 2: gags for everybody.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, if I was tearrified, the story was going
- 7:17Speaker 4: to be that your kids were understanding the Simpsons perfectly,
- 7:19Speaker 4: and I was. I was just a particularly stupid child.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We're all stupid.
- 7:27Speaker 3: We were a smart adult though, Ray I given you
- 7:29Speaker 3: you're you're, you're you're a well just what were gleaned
- 7:32Speaker 3: from this conversation. But also, yeah, you're a student of philosophy.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yes, well you've done your research.
- 7:42Speaker 3: The internet, thank you, but sort of gathering that information
- 7:48Speaker 3: or you know, learning about, you know, the various strands
- 7:51Speaker 3: of thinking and things like that. I don't know, did
- 7:54Speaker 3: affect your comedy sensibility in anyway in how you absorb
- 7:57Speaker 3: comedy but also how you presented.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Yes, I say one hundred percent. Yeah, I think it. Yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 4: I think it fundamentally sort of changed changed who I
- 8:05Speaker 4: am and how I approach things. And I think, especially
- 8:09Speaker 4: with comedy, I think a lot of good comedy is
- 8:13Speaker 4: sort of like a philosophical argument. You know, in philosophy,
- 8:16Speaker 4: there there's you know, you're trying to support a conclusion.
- 8:20Speaker 4: You know, you're trying to prove that the conclusion is true,
- 8:22Speaker 4: and you gather your premise and your evidence and you're
- 8:24Speaker 4: arranged in the logical order and you do that. And
- 8:27Speaker 4: comedy I think can often be like that. You know,
- 8:29Speaker 4: It's like I see the world like this, and this
- 8:32Speaker 4: is why, and here's my supporting reasons, and so it
- 8:34Speaker 4: is often you are often presenting an argument, but often
- 8:38Speaker 4: but because it's comedy, the logics all twisted and none
- 8:41Speaker 4: of it quite makes sense and stuff, But it's still
- 8:43Speaker 4: I think at its core you're doing a very similar thing. Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And the closing argument that you've got to come up with,
- 8:49Speaker 3: that conclusion you have become with is usually is the punchline.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yes exactly of percent? Yeah, yeah, yeah, And and I
- 8:55Speaker 4: mean the Simpsons writers were heavily influenced by philosophy. I'm
- 8:59Speaker 4: pretty sure that they seem to know what I mean.
- 9:00Speaker 4: There was there's a great gag is the it? Which
- 9:04Speaker 4: one is the probe where they all have to give
- 9:06Speaker 4: them their textas and Kim Brockman says the unemployment line
- 9:11Speaker 4: formerly the domain of philosophy majors.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's right. When they're at the dole officer.
- 9:18Speaker 3: That's tough times and not even productive people are feeling,
- 9:23Speaker 3: not just philosophy.
- 9:25Speaker 4: How even productively. So funny.
- 9:31Speaker 2: It's interesting you're saying before that you used to do
- 9:33Speaker 2: the gags to your mother or try and rehearse them
- 9:35Speaker 2: to your mum. We've had like several, like many comedians
- 9:38Speaker 2: on the show, and so many of them say they
- 9:40Speaker 2: did the same thing when they were younger. I just
- 9:41Speaker 2: wonder if you became a comedian because of the Simpsons.
- 9:46Speaker 2: They're just instilled in your mind, this is something fun
- 9:48Speaker 2: to do. I'm going to do this for a living
- 9:50Speaker 2: without even realizing it.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent. And it's clearly something in you
- 9:56Speaker 4: that makes you want to recite the gag and keep
- 9:58Speaker 4: the laugh for yourself. And I do wonder if bombing
- 10:02Speaker 4: to my mum in the kitchen sort of instilled this
- 10:06Speaker 4: like deep desire to get a laugh of like, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 4: I gotta I gotta win her somehow, you.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Know, she a heck boom.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm just remembering my favorite Simpsons gift, which
- 10:20Speaker 3: is the stand up comedian. Oh, I think about weirdstuff.
- 10:22Speaker 3: What about a et and mister T had a baby,
- 10:24Speaker 3: but then he does a little give it up gesture.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I'm just picturing you in the kitchen and.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Mom, I was doing a lot of you know how
- 10:34Speaker 4: white guys drive, like.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Trying to picture a little six year old Rare Learry
- 10:42Speaker 2: doing that routine.
- 10:45Speaker 4: It's actually now that's one of my sister's favorite gigs
- 10:48Speaker 4: from the Simpsons of when mod does stand up and
- 10:52Speaker 4: as the ladies like to call me, hey you behind
- 10:54Speaker 4: the bush?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Do you like that episode, the stand up comedian episode
- 10:59Speaker 2: where Krusty becomes the more raunchy comic.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's yeah, it's fantastic where he sort of
- 11:05Speaker 4: does it George Carlin type two. George Carlin is maybe
- 11:09Speaker 4: even in the episode.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Maybe maybe be reference by any different does the ponytail
- 11:13Speaker 2: and whatnot?
- 11:14Speaker 4: Yes, No, I think it's I think it's phenomenal, and
- 11:16Speaker 4: it's it feels like a timeless type sort of commentary
- 11:21Speaker 4: on like, it feels still very much how comedy works now,
- 11:24Speaker 4: where you know you can be this like interesting alternative
- 11:28Speaker 4: act for a while and then the the siren call
- 11:32Speaker 4: of money and Kenyonero's sponsorship deals and you sell your
- 11:37Speaker 4: soul Jay Leno's in that episode, that's the one.
- 11:40Speaker 2: It gives them the spongebarb yes, Leno's bathing.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yes. And then as we well, the episode we're going
- 11:47Speaker 4: to discuss was almost going to be Burns Baby Burns,
- 11:49Speaker 4: which is another one that heavily features a stand up
- 11:54Speaker 4: comedy and has Rodney Dangerfield sort of basically playing himself,
- 11:59Speaker 4: which is I think another another fantastic episode.
- 12:02Speaker 2: It's funny because when I was younger, I didn't even
- 12:05Speaker 2: quite get what he was on on about who is
- 12:06Speaker 2: this character? What is going on? I understand these gags,
- 12:09Speaker 2: and then when I got I was like, holy shit,
- 12:11Speaker 2: this is one of the first episodes of all time.
- 12:14Speaker 4: It's so good. Yeah, And I've read that the Ride
- 12:17Speaker 4: has actually kind of struggled to write it because they
- 12:19Speaker 4: were trying to write Rodney Dangerfield jokes. And I think
- 12:24Speaker 4: he is a very particular tone and type, which is
- 12:26Speaker 4: maybe that's not that hard to tap into, like oh,
- 12:29Speaker 4: the heavily you know, the guy who gets no respect.
- 12:32Speaker 4: You know, that's that's a stick. But the jokes he
- 12:35Speaker 4: does are so so so strong. He's a very like
- 12:38Speaker 4: his stand up. I think a lot of it still
- 12:39Speaker 4: holds up, which a lot of comedy does not, but
- 12:43Speaker 4: his still does. And so I don't know, they ended
- 12:45Speaker 4: up doing a very good job. I think of sort
- 12:47Speaker 4: of creating a mini Rodney Dangerfield in The Simpsons, and
- 12:51Speaker 4: like the little allusions to his act I think are
- 12:53Speaker 4: so funny where he says, I get no regard.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Move the tire.
- 13:00Speaker 4: It is walking up to mister Burns's house and is going, oh, man,
- 13:04Speaker 4: this place is so nice. It's got I've never seen
- 13:06Speaker 4: a place with a drive in mailbox talking to.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to say, you're nailing the Rodney cadence there,
- 13:17Speaker 3: because I mean he's very much one on one and
- 13:19Speaker 3: in terms of what you're talking about there, I mean,
- 13:20Speaker 3: the gags seem like, oh, these are dad jokes or
- 13:23Speaker 3: these sort of hacky take my way, please stand up jokes.
- 13:28Speaker 3: But the combination of that material and the way Rodney
- 13:31Speaker 3: delivered them, it's with a sort of laser focus. Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 3: you're right, no one can really imitate that. I mean
- 13:37Speaker 3: you can try, but yeah, you'll never get it quite right.
- 13:40Speaker 2: So do you think he's also somewhat of a physical comedian
- 13:42Speaker 2: just the mannerisms in which when he delivers the line
- 13:44Speaker 2: he looks away and he does the tie. Do you
- 13:46Speaker 2: think that is part of the part of the shtick.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Do you think as well?
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent. I think he I mean I
- 13:51Speaker 4: think he may have actually had a condition, but his
- 13:53Speaker 4: eyes sort of boulge out a little bit as well,
- 13:55Speaker 4: and like, yeah, just the way he looks he it's
- 13:58Speaker 4: I think it is important for comedy, and I think
- 14:01Speaker 4: maybe i've stumbled upon it as well. But you know,
- 14:04Speaker 4: he looked he looks like a loser. You know, you
- 14:07Speaker 4: believe he's a loser. And then he gets up and
- 14:08Speaker 4: he starts talking, and you're like, oh, this guy, yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 4: he's a.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Loser if he gets up and he starts doing sort
- 14:17Speaker 2: of politically charged George Carlin Stahleman.
- 14:21Speaker 3: You're not quite buying it. Could they could be the
- 14:24Speaker 3: most bang on lines ever. They get the most scathing
- 14:26Speaker 3: social observations, like from this guy though.
- 14:30Speaker 4: He's not selling it, don't you hate pants?
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's a big club and you're not in it. But
- 14:41Speaker 2: you're speaking about timeless commentary before and The Simpsons is
- 14:44Speaker 2: no for that. And that's what we're doing today is
- 14:45Speaker 2: the Cartridge Family because obviously they're taking the mickey out
- 14:48Speaker 2: of gun laws and just controlling guns in the gun culture,
- 14:52Speaker 2: gun culture in the in the US. But they do
- 14:54Speaker 2: it in a way that not many shows have been
- 14:56Speaker 2: able to successfully pull off. It's unbiased. It sees the
- 14:59Speaker 2: pros and con of both sides. I don't think you
- 15:01Speaker 2: really walk out of this feeling like guns are the
- 15:03Speaker 2: way to go, or generally guns aren't the way to go.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's just the way Sports World have written it is
- 15:08Speaker 2: just an all timer.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Yes, one hundred percent. Yeah, Yes, Swartsweld will be one
- 15:12Speaker 4: of the greatest comedy writers of all time. And I
- 15:16Speaker 4: think as I've sort of gotten older, I think I
- 15:19Speaker 4: realized that is. I guess what you discussed is kind
- 15:22Speaker 4: of the kind of comedy I really love. I do
- 15:25Speaker 4: really love comedy about politically charged topics. But I don't
- 15:31Speaker 4: you know, you don't want to just hear someone sort
- 15:33Speaker 4: of repeat what you believe back to you and then
- 15:36Speaker 4: you sort of just clap and go, oh yeah, that
- 15:39Speaker 4: I do agree with that. Like, yeah, the Simpsons have
- 15:43Speaker 4: I guess, kind of a funny perspective, which is Homer
- 15:46Speaker 4: really Homer should not have a gun, which is I
- 15:48Speaker 4: think the main takeaway.
- 15:50Speaker 2: But it's yeah, and that's what Mike Scully said, the
- 15:52Speaker 2: showrunner at the time. He said that that's the takeaway.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Homer the character is the person who shouldn't have a gun.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, Yeah, and which I think everyone could have
- 15:59Speaker 4: could agree with there, Like its funny like seeing the
- 16:03Speaker 4: members of the NRA's faces as he shoots at the TV.
- 16:08Speaker 4: They're like watching Eggna's skinner look so horrified.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And who's been throwing grenades at the shooting range dryer.
- 16:15Speaker 2: And I think it's actually a really good rug pull
- 16:17Speaker 2: that moment because you're not expecting their reaction to be that, Yeah,
- 16:21Speaker 2: Moss shown up, he's five in one gun, and you
- 16:23Speaker 2: expect them to sort of be gun crazy when he
- 16:24Speaker 2: does that. It makes you the viewer who is like,
- 16:27Speaker 2: I'm not anti gun, but like we're in it. Outside
- 16:29Speaker 2: of the States, we have a very negative outlook on
- 16:31Speaker 2: their guns. In the States. You watch it and you go, Ah,
- 16:34Speaker 2: these guys aren't gun crazy maniacs. Maybe I need to
- 16:36Speaker 2: take a step back and to sort of listen to
- 16:38Speaker 2: what they have to say as well.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Yes, one hundred percent, And like I feel like, I mean,
- 16:42Speaker 4: I could be wrong, but it feels like could be
- 16:45Speaker 4: very difficult now to portray the NRA and maybe in
- 16:48Speaker 4: a more reasonable I don't know, it doesn't just feels
- 16:51Speaker 4: things are more polarized now, and so I feel like,
- 16:54Speaker 4: I don't know, I don't know if you'd have necessarily
- 16:56Speaker 4: as a nuanced to discussion involving the NRA on on
- 17:00Speaker 4: TV now, But I think that's the Yeah, that's the
- 17:03Speaker 4: kind of comedy I really like. It's political comedy, it
- 17:06Speaker 4: wades into the political issues. It doesn't necessarily show that
- 17:12Speaker 4: one side is one hundred percent right, though maybe it
- 17:14Speaker 4: does make you lean more towards a little bit a
- 17:16Speaker 4: little bit one way. But it's not like, you know,
- 17:19Speaker 4: they don't say this this issue is perfect or the
- 17:21Speaker 4: side is perfect. Like at the end, you know, it
- 17:23Speaker 4: kind of seems like maybe Marge is in the right,
- 17:25Speaker 4: but then they do get what is it held up?
- 17:30Speaker 4: They get by snake. Snake comes in and then they
- 17:33Speaker 4: do need a gun at the end.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and you also have the issue of Marge and
- 17:37Speaker 2: Home and Home aligned to it again. But yeah, you're
- 17:39Speaker 2: just touched on there. How Like I was saying, how
- 17:41Speaker 2: it's unbiased? Do you think you couldn't do it now
- 17:44Speaker 2: as you're saying, because comedy in general has just become
- 17:48Speaker 2: very one note. Let's say that you agree or you disagree.
- 17:51Speaker 2: There's sort of no middle line anymore, especially when it
- 17:53Speaker 2: comes to political issues.
- 17:55Speaker 4: I think there are still some people in some comedies
- 17:58Speaker 4: who are tackling, you know, political topics in a very
- 18:02Speaker 4: interesting way, and even sometimes in a one in an
- 18:05Speaker 4: overly one sided way, like I think, you know, John Stewart,
- 18:08Speaker 4: for example, or roy Wood Junior. I think they're clearly
- 18:11Speaker 4: left wing people, or Steward Lee in the UK, like
- 18:14Speaker 4: I think there are some comics who are very clearly
- 18:16Speaker 4: left wing. But even though they are left wing, they're
- 18:18Speaker 4: still the primary primary concern of all of them. I
- 18:22Speaker 4: think has been funny first, you know, and I think
- 18:25Speaker 4: that's so that's still nice. So I wouldn't necessarily say
- 18:28Speaker 4: that comedy has changed. I would say my feeling is,
- 18:32Speaker 4: and I could be wrong, but that politics has changed.
- 18:35Speaker 4: It's not as it's not as nice as it used
- 18:39Speaker 4: to be. I think, like I again, I mean that
- 18:42Speaker 4: we have constant discussions about like you know, we all
- 18:44Speaker 4: need to reach across the aisle and you know, not
- 18:47Speaker 4: be so polarized, YadA, YadA. But I do think, yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 4: top of the issues just are more polarized now, and
- 18:53Speaker 4: there's a bigger gulf between the two sides, and I think.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I imagine there's nu once discussion app they it is really
- 19:00Speaker 3: really sort of harder to find. It gets drowned out
- 19:02Speaker 3: by the loudest signs on either extreme, whether you're if
- 19:07Speaker 3: we're talking about guns for and sorta of gun control
- 19:08Speaker 3: with their anti gun control or pro I mean, I imagine
- 19:11Speaker 3: there are moderate voices even in the NRA or in
- 19:15Speaker 3: you know, in gun culture in the US. I mean,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I've known people who who hunt and who have rivals
- 19:20Speaker 3: and now they are adamant. They are always adamant about like, yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 3: this day's locked up, this day's like double locked up.
- 19:26Speaker 3: It's behind the get smart doors essentially. Yeah, but I'm
- 19:30Speaker 3: sure you're going to have some people who are, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 3: to the extremes like no, no open carry all the time.
- 19:35Speaker 3: This is on my hip wherever I go, and they're
- 19:37Speaker 3: the ones who are going to get the headlines and
- 19:39Speaker 3: sort of prompt the most discussion pro and con.
- 19:41Speaker 2: What's interesting in swatswad are the men who wrote this
- 19:43Speaker 2: one of the most iconic Simpsons writers of all time.
- 19:46Speaker 2: He's very pro gun. So I wonder if it wasn't
- 19:49Speaker 2: him running, do you think there would have been a
- 19:51Speaker 2: bunch of pro NRA story.
- 19:54Speaker 3: And I imagine the King of the King of England
- 19:56Speaker 3: got in his face one too many times and it's
- 19:57Speaker 3: just like I'm got to show this guy.
- 20:00Speaker 4: That is a great moment of the episode right at
- 20:03Speaker 4: the year where they where they say the reason on
- 20:06Speaker 4: a gun is we're homo midges that do you think
- 20:08Speaker 4: is being dumb? And then the n A are like, no, no, no.
- 20:10Speaker 2: But that's the main reason. Yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But you're right though, Dan, I mean, I imagine that
- 20:16Speaker 3: we're going into this. I I had memories of the
- 20:18Speaker 3: Cartridge family, but I didn't remember the entire plot, and
- 20:21Speaker 3: I was thinking, Oh, this is going to be more
- 20:24Speaker 3: anti gun than pro and it's I wasn't going to
- 20:28Speaker 3: accuse it of not having nuance. I mean, I think
- 20:30Speaker 3: The Simpsons does that pretty well, but I get that.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I had the feeling that in the end it's going
- 20:33Speaker 3: to be more guns are bad for the most part,
- 20:37Speaker 3: or our argument is ninety percent guns are bad. And yeah,
- 20:41Speaker 3: for this to be as even handed as it was
- 20:44Speaker 3: in a lot of ways, and even with that last
- 20:46Speaker 3: part that you're talking about with the final the final,
- 20:50Speaker 3: the very final scene with Marge, yeah, they do appeal
- 20:53Speaker 3: to something very primal, improvenive.
- 20:56Speaker 2: It feels good to hold this. Yeah. Yeah, and that
- 21:00Speaker 2: ending interesting you brought that up, is actually censored. I'm
- 21:03Speaker 2: not sure if it is to this day. We'll got
- 21:04Speaker 2: Disney Plus now, so it's different Back when reruns on
- 21:07Speaker 2: TV where the way to watch The Simpsons in the UK,
- 21:09Speaker 2: they banned the episode for a good while because of
- 21:12Speaker 2: the subject matter and they thought it was just too
- 21:14Speaker 2: pro gun and they thought the kids would think, as
- 21:16Speaker 2: he said at the end there with Marge walking out,
- 21:17Speaker 2: they think kids would leave this going. Kids think guns
- 21:20Speaker 2: are cool and we don't want that at all here
- 21:22Speaker 2: in the UK. So it was banned. But then when
- 21:24Speaker 2: they finally another another station brought the rights to it
- 21:26Speaker 2: got to go onto the TV, but they changed the ending.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You can actually find the video on YouTube of the
- 21:31Speaker 2: revised ending that airs. I think it's gonna be Sky
- 21:33Speaker 2: one or whatever. And what happens is when Marge puts
- 21:36Speaker 2: the gun in the bin, you see a reflection and
- 21:38Speaker 2: then they play the reverse footage, and it's meant to
- 21:40Speaker 2: be that her gun. She's dropping the gun in the bin,
- 21:42Speaker 2: and then she just walks out and that's the end.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I don't see her with the gun. You don't know
- 21:46Speaker 2: she's got the gun in her purse. It's meant to
- 21:47Speaker 2: be Marge's put the gun in the bin. She's happy,
- 21:49Speaker 2: and she's walking out like she's saved the day by
- 21:50Speaker 2: getting rid of the gun, which completely changes the tone
- 21:53Speaker 2: of the episode.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Really does yes, Yes, and it's a shame because it's
- 21:57Speaker 4: kind of nice when March has those little moments where
- 21:59Speaker 4: you're like, oh, she's I don't know, she's not just
- 22:02Speaker 4: this mild mannered I don't know, housewife or whatever. You know,
- 22:05Speaker 4: she's got this like interesting fiery streak and she's a
- 22:08Speaker 4: gambling addict and stuff. You know, it's nice when they
- 22:10Speaker 4: have she has little moments flaws. She has flaws exactly.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Yeah, because I don't think the episode is anti gun
- 22:17Speaker 3: so much as pro responsibility. And then going back to
- 22:19Speaker 3: that NRA meeting where you know, at Home's place where
- 22:22Speaker 3: he's you know, bring out chocolate curls and that, but
- 22:24Speaker 3: using the gun to open his beer and everyone's.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Just absolutely repulsed by this.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I mean yeah, I mean I think that's probably what
- 22:32Speaker 3: the episode is putting across morning, and it's like, that's
- 22:34Speaker 3: how you should if you're if you're an American and
- 22:37Speaker 3: you're you've got the second member that allows you to
- 22:40Speaker 3: what gives you the right to bear arms, You've got
- 22:42Speaker 3: to do so responsibly.
- 22:43Speaker 2: You know, this isn't a what.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Is Homer's ads? Like, this is a tool like anything else,
- 22:47Speaker 3: like a harpoon.

- 23:18Speaker 2: finger discount. This story was actually pitched by Sam Simon,
- 23:21Speaker 2: one of the original creators of the show, back in
- 23:23Speaker 2: season one, and the way he was going to end
- 23:26Speaker 2: the episode was at Homer saves a robbery using his gun,
- 23:28Speaker 2: YadA YadA, YadA, and I'm glad they didn't do that
- 23:31Speaker 2: because I think if you do a story like that
- 23:33Speaker 2: which comes across as very pro gun in the early
- 23:36Speaker 2: days of The Simpsons, I think it changes the overall
- 23:39Speaker 2: depiction of just the perception of the show for parents
- 23:42Speaker 2: letting their kids watch it, because I mean, as an
- 23:44Speaker 2: Australian mother, I know my mum would definitely not let
- 23:46Speaker 2: me to Simpsons if there was an episode in season
- 23:48Speaker 2: one saying hey, kids, guns aren't so bad.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yes for sure, yes, yes, yeah, I don't know what
- 23:53Speaker 4: my mom thought, I guess, I don't know did she'd
- 23:56Speaker 4: allowed me to watch it, but I know she's a
- 23:59Speaker 4: partner are now who never liked The Simpsons because there
- 24:03Speaker 4: was too much belching. That was that's the line that
- 24:08Speaker 4: was burping. He goes duck hunting and things like that.
- 24:13Speaker 4: So I assumed that the guns was fine. But the
- 24:15Speaker 4: birding is with them.
- 24:17Speaker 2: When he when he strangles you like, that's okay? As
- 24:19Speaker 2: well know every episode is just censored forever.
- 24:24Speaker 4: They actually edited the ending of the Barty episode where
- 24:27Speaker 4: he's about to burn, but then they reversed the footage
- 24:29Speaker 4: and he doesn't.
- 24:34Speaker 2: What's the more they do the big burp? It's their
- 24:36Speaker 2: star as burns when they have the back with the critic.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Yeah but you door a wealthy interesting I know how
- 24:43Speaker 2: or why? But what was what's the celebrities name? You're
- 24:45Speaker 2: just saying you do wealthy? Yeah, you do it. They
- 24:49Speaker 2: have her do the burp off screen and crusty hair blows.
- 24:52Speaker 2: For some reason on Australian TV they used to censor
- 24:55Speaker 2: out the burp. It was just silent when she burned
- 24:58Speaker 2: and his hair would move, but he couldn't hear a burp.
- 25:00Speaker 2: It makes no.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Sense was your mum's partner on the on the film classification.
- 25:10Speaker 3: We're okay with Salo and the Evil Dead, but you
- 25:13Speaker 3: had not this episode.
- 25:15Speaker 2: It all makes sense now. The other thing, this obviously
- 25:20Speaker 2: is all about gun control, but we also get a
- 25:21Speaker 2: really solid margin Homer in Christ's marriaging Christ's story. He
- 25:25Speaker 2: had plenty of them, but I thought this one here
- 25:27Speaker 2: felt unique in the sense that Marge wasn't leaving just
- 25:30Speaker 2: because Homa did something stupid. She was leaving because she
- 25:32Speaker 2: genuinely feared for her life. And that's a different thing.
- 25:35Speaker 2: It wasn't Home wasn't doing necessarily anything. His behavior was stupid, right,
- 25:38Speaker 2: but it wasn't he was just being an idiot. It
- 25:40Speaker 2: was just he was being selfish and being I guess, yeah,
- 25:44Speaker 2: just a bad father and a bad husband. And that's
- 25:46Speaker 2: why she had to take the kids and run.
- 25:48Speaker 4: He was genuinely endangering their lives and consistently lying about it.
- 25:53Speaker 4: And it's I think those lines are so funny, were
- 25:57Speaker 4: in Marge with what is it? He comes in? And
- 26:00Speaker 4: what is it? Bart is about to shoot Millhouse in
- 26:02Speaker 4: the face, and then and then hope it comes and goes, Oh,
- 26:07Speaker 4: how come Bart gets a gun.
- 26:10Speaker 2: I never thought you'd find out.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I swear from the bront bottom of my heart, Parge,
- 26:15Speaker 4: I didn't think you'd find out. It's so funny.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great that they have. They make it so funny, right,
- 26:24Speaker 2: but then you have to have that serious moment where
- 26:26Speaker 2: the n RA go well what are you doing, bunny?
- 26:28Speaker 2: And it's important. It was clever that Swortswater had the
- 26:31Speaker 2: n r A be the ones to do that as well.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yeah, it's so funny. And then also making
- 26:38Speaker 4: Homer leave his own house he has to wait outside
- 26:42Speaker 4: all the rest of them parties.
- 26:45Speaker 2: What sounds like the Ion Springfield thing? Is that? Really?
- 26:52Speaker 2: That's what sound like? I want to any excuse for
- 26:55Speaker 2: me to do that sound is yeah, I'll take it better.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Say favorite moments?
- 26:59Speaker 3: Well, I thought it was under one of my favorite moments,
- 27:01Speaker 3: but that one of my favorite moments is actually the
- 27:03Speaker 3: next line my favorite.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Well what we do here? Raised we touched on some
- 27:07Speaker 2: of our favorite moments from the episode. Do you have
- 27:09Speaker 2: any particular moments that stood out to you?
- 27:11Speaker 4: Oh, it's a lot. I mean, I picked it because
- 27:13Speaker 4: I do think it is the funniest episode. I think, Yeah,
- 27:18Speaker 4: I think how come Bart gets a gun. That's incredibly
- 27:21Speaker 4: a really funny line. But maybe my favorite line is
- 27:26Speaker 4: we know because Marge, I've got a surprise for you.
- 27:31Speaker 4: They got to the open, she opens your eyes and
- 27:33Speaker 4: he's pucked in the gun. Right.
- 27:37Speaker 2: It's amazing you can have such confronting images of pointing
- 27:40Speaker 2: a gun at Marge's face but make it funny.
- 27:43Speaker 4: It's really something. It is really something that we can
- 27:46Speaker 4: only get away with because it's animated. Like probably if
- 27:49Speaker 4: you had if this show was live action and Homer
- 27:52Speaker 4: was shooting a gun at the TV and things like that,
- 27:54Speaker 4: it probably would be quite horrifying watch. Because it's an animation,
- 28:00Speaker 4: they can get away with it and do the things
- 28:02Speaker 4: of the shots of Marge's eye and the guns pointed
- 28:05Speaker 4: right out in it.
- 28:06Speaker 2: When the guy was leaving there, the security guy, and
- 28:09Speaker 2: he says, surely you can't put a price in your
- 28:11Speaker 2: family's life. I wouldn't thought so either.
- 28:13Speaker 3: But here, by the way, shadow to x Con security
- 28:18Speaker 3: guary real quickly, just when he's pinching all their ship stopping.
- 28:24Speaker 3: It just doesn't really sort of sly smile like, oh
- 28:27Speaker 3: I like this guy.
- 28:28Speaker 4: But when when he says, what does it know that
- 28:31Speaker 4: all the previous owner of this owners of this house
- 28:33Speaker 4: could still be in here.
- 28:36Speaker 2: He didn't change your lots.
- 28:39Speaker 4: And the other the other line, now that I think
- 28:41Speaker 4: about it, that always I remember really cracking me up
- 28:43Speaker 4: when I first watched the episode was the soccer ad
- 28:48Speaker 4: right at the start and they say, then we can
- 28:50Speaker 4: finally decide which is the best country in the world,
- 28:53Speaker 4: Mexico or Portugal.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Well, when we get to this the moments, I want
- 29:00Speaker 2: to touch on that because yeah, there's a lot to
- 29:02Speaker 2: dove into that as well. But I also really liked
- 29:04Speaker 2: the Now being a married man with two kids, I
- 29:08Speaker 2: completely relate and understand this bit where Marge says to Homer,
- 29:11Speaker 2: I think you'd agree Homer that I've put up with
- 29:13Speaker 2: a lot in this marriage. And he's about to interject
- 29:15Speaker 2: and he looks at the kids, and the kids's goat,
- 29:18Speaker 2: you'll lose this one day.
- 29:20Speaker 4: That's such a good light. And the cup to them
- 29:23Speaker 4: after Homer has been shooting the dinner plates and then
- 29:26Speaker 4: they up to them all eating out of the colanders and.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Open where we did the plates You probably left them
- 29:35Speaker 2: at wait.
- 29:37Speaker 4: And I also love a Millhouse moment and a Simpson's
- 29:40Speaker 4: episode as well that When Homer says, do you know
- 29:42Speaker 4: how to cook dinner? He goes on, do I.
- 29:46Speaker 2: My time shine.
- 29:49Speaker 3: One or two that I wouldn't mind giving a shout out.
- 29:51Speaker 3: I love that the gunshop was called blood Bath. And
- 29:53Speaker 3: beyond that much of your questions Moe's lying about he
- 30:00Speaker 3: he had a burglar at Mo's and shot him in
- 30:03Speaker 3: the spines. Like I guess the next place he rather
- 30:04Speaker 3: better than a ramp.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Dark. It's gonna get pretty ugly there the spine.
- 30:13Speaker 4: It's such a horrific spit. And today I forget they
- 30:16Speaker 4: either all clap or do they all?
- 30:17Speaker 2: Are they appla they applause? I don't know this is
- 30:21Speaker 2: a meme as such.
- 30:22Speaker 4: It's not.
- 30:22Speaker 3: It's not a mainstream meme in the in the vein
- 30:25Speaker 3: of Homer back in the Hedge or something like that.
- 30:27Speaker 3: But Homer's robbed the Quickie Mard fantasy.
- 30:29Speaker 2: It's like what would like to be good?
- 30:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's guys, a go go Dan Senator sash swirling
- 30:35Speaker 3: a six shooter and marges like a bikini clap go
- 30:37Speaker 3: go down.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Really like brobed the Quickie Margin.
- 30:46Speaker 3: And the kids have left the family home. They've gone
- 30:48Speaker 3: to Patty and Selm. We've got a gentleman.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Called Stem is not broken, it's just unplugged.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Hey, Hey, I thought you would.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Have loved Quimby. That's my final one, Wimby. That's all
- 31:03Speaker 2: you got to say.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And three times the man's just on the campaign trailer's
- 31:09Speaker 3: on the hast things all the time.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Brilliant, Mike Wimby. My final one is at the end
- 31:13Speaker 2: where Snake takes home his gun. Gets you, idiot, there's
- 31:16Speaker 2: no in there. Give me the okay, don't you?
- 31:20Speaker 4: The phenomenal one? Actually, speaking of lines that I remember
- 31:24Speaker 4: as a kid, I just maybe they used to play
- 31:26Speaker 4: it in an aad or something. No, that can't be right,
- 31:28Speaker 4: but I distinctly remember the the woman saying, hello's sailor,
- 31:35Speaker 4: and does you say you're looking for a good time?
- 31:37Speaker 4: And he says.
- 31:39Speaker 2: He's really not.
- 31:42Speaker 4: Budge comes back out. But I think that, for whatever reason,
- 31:47Speaker 4: the line of hello, sailor, are you're looking for a
- 31:50Speaker 4: good time? Stuck in my brain as a child.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It's what you were saying before. You think it might
- 31:54Speaker 2: have been from commercial or something. There's a moment in
- 31:56Speaker 2: this episode here where Homer says we're going to go
- 31:58Speaker 2: to the soccer. Yes, yes, oh god, yes, that used
- 32:00Speaker 2: to be always used. We had a TV station was
- 32:03Speaker 2: still here, Channel ten. You're on Channel ten? Were you
- 32:05Speaker 2: have you been paying attention to whatnot? They used to
- 32:06Speaker 2: air the Simpsons. That was like the in the Golden Year.
- 32:08Speaker 2: That was what they had The Simpsons and used to
- 32:10Speaker 2: have competitions all the time, and they say do you
- 32:13Speaker 2: want to answer the competition? And it always play that
- 32:15Speaker 2: clip yes, yes, oh god, yes or whatever I say.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I'm like, it's the ad. It's funny how like certain
- 32:20Speaker 2: moments to get repeated so many times. You're like, it's
- 32:23Speaker 2: that commercial and that's that moment. Yeah, next question, you
- 32:26Speaker 2: there eating the bast trivia time hit us with your
- 32:31Speaker 2: first question the.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Soccer grade Pelle endorses what it'll make you king of
- 32:36Speaker 3: the kitchen.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Oh yes, it's a it's something really bland and oh
- 32:42Speaker 4: is it just like a well, why no.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Crust something crackers? Right? It is Cressfield wax paper.
- 32:52Speaker 3: It is nothing like what you was at. But Pella
- 32:55Speaker 3: got a fat second cash for that. Anytime, anytime we've
- 32:59Speaker 3: got someone getting a fat bag with a dollar sign
- 33:02Speaker 3: on it, you're doing all right by mate, whether it's
- 33:04Speaker 3: Ron Howard or Pele and those are pretty much the
- 33:06Speaker 3: only two examples that exist. Yeah, just an absolute winner unrelated.
- 33:11Speaker 4: It's in another episode and you guys will know which one.
- 33:15Speaker 4: But another great moment in the Simpsons at a stadium
- 33:19Speaker 4: is when mister Burns is the winner of a of
- 33:21Speaker 4: a lottery or he wins a car or something and
- 33:24Speaker 4: he comes out. Oh it's when. It's when Margin is
- 33:26Speaker 4: making pretzels because she's.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Just in zero zero one and she just had.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Prinzels to the entire crowd, and come the.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Pritzels Colin Whitey Whackers.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Mister Burns is twitching on the ground.
- 33:41Speaker 2: No, it's a whitey Whitey somebody could He comes out
- 33:44Speaker 2: to try and stop the crowd. And then Colin Whitey
- 33:46Speaker 2: Whackers because mister Burns in his car. I just love
- 33:49Speaker 2: the delivery. I think it's harrisher and here come that pretzelzels.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I have to say that. Man. My first question is
- 34:03Speaker 2: what is on at the Springfield Stadium the day after
- 34:06Speaker 2: the socker.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Oh. I remember paying attention to that because I remember thinking, oh,
- 34:11Speaker 4: that was weird, and I thought maybe they could have
- 34:13Speaker 4: done a stronger gag. But I'm trying to.
- 34:16Speaker 2: It's usually something of rock.
- 34:18Speaker 4: This something of.
- 34:22Speaker 2: It's monsters of something.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Oh well, okay, is it monsters of love or something?
- 34:28Speaker 2: Or Monsters of poetry?
- 34:30Speaker 4: That's aid Monsters of Poetry. I didn't understand the gag.
- 34:33Speaker 4: I think that's well.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Monsters of Rock is like a thing, right, it's a
- 34:37Speaker 3: it was an ongoing tour in the nineties that you
- 34:40Speaker 3: get to get a three or four bands that were the.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Money. Yeah, so for three or four bands that were
- 34:48Speaker 4: couldn't quite fill the stadium on their own.
- 34:50Speaker 2: But Monsters of Rock featuring Docan deph Flippers.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Of Poetry, that's a great gag.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Yes, your next one.
- 35:05Speaker 3: According to Margin's statistics, you are how much more likely
- 35:08Speaker 3: to shoot a family member than you are an intruder?
- 35:10Speaker 2: I know this one. I remember.
- 35:11Speaker 4: Oh, yes, gosh, I remember because saying and but how
- 35:16Speaker 4: how much higher?
- 35:17Speaker 2: Is it? Like a little bit, a little bit more
- 35:20Speaker 2: than half?
- 35:20Speaker 4: Yes, I was going to say that. My brain went
- 35:23Speaker 4: to fifty six fifty eight, Yeah.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Incredibly close.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, Where are the guns located in blood Bath
- 35:32Speaker 2: and Beyond?
- 35:33Speaker 4: Oh gosh, I remember I remembering Homer seeming like he
- 35:39Speaker 4: wanted to rush into the store that he rushes straight past.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Wise guy says they're in Asle so and so next
- 35:46Speaker 2: to the something. They're in Aisle six next to the
- 35:49Speaker 2: sympathy cards.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Well this is very quick to bathroom turn around by Homer,
- 35:54Speaker 3: by the way, Yeah.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but that I love that moment. Yeah, I think
- 35:57Speaker 2: he's excited for the gun.
- 35:58Speaker 3: But also very any i'mhappy in any time I see
- 36:00Speaker 3: Wise Guy as a viewers and listening to the show.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Well know, but this particular time, we're just getting shot at.
- 36:07Speaker 3: I know, the empty whoa he take it hes there
- 36:10Speaker 3: any ugly. I didn't take it easy. I've got a
- 36:13Speaker 3: gun that was brilliant. I have one more trivia question.
- 36:17Speaker 4: What was the what was the thing he says to
- 36:19Speaker 4: Guy does homelessay like, oh like you said some like
- 36:22Speaker 4: if I had my gun on shoot you or something.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Yeah, well you don't.
- 36:30Speaker 3: My last question, we're going back to the stadium. How
- 36:32Speaker 3: much valet parking cost at the stadium?
- 36:35Speaker 2: Oh, good question. I have no idea.
- 36:36Speaker 4: I'm yeah. I mean I remember the valets showing up
- 36:39Speaker 4: and the cars on fire and he heads the keys
- 36:41Speaker 4: on it.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it is ten dollars for valet parking. It seems
- 36:46Speaker 2: pretty cheap.
- 36:47Speaker 3: We're getting a lot of good When when did this
- 36:49Speaker 3: episode are that's ninety seven. Yeah, we're getting a lot
- 36:52Speaker 3: of good nineties prices in this, because when x con
- 36:55Speaker 3: Security comes in and says like, we can do this
- 36:57Speaker 3: to your windows for five hundred bucks, I'm.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Like, what a what a deal? Even from x Consecurity,
- 37:05Speaker 2: you're getting a bar. I was like, that's pretty cheap.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It was like, I can't afford that. I'm like, huh.
- 37:11Speaker 3: In the sense that we were looking to you as
- 37:13Speaker 3: the exemplar of middle class.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Living and the bargain, the bargain of units to get
- 37:17Speaker 4: a product that seals your windows completely, it means you
- 37:20Speaker 4: can't breathe.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the suffocation one, all right. Final one for
- 37:27Speaker 2: me is what's the address of Patty and Summer? What
- 37:29Speaker 2: room number are they?
- 37:31Speaker 4: Oh? Are they? Is it ten?
- 37:33Speaker 2: No, it's fifteen ninety nine. That might have been Marge's
- 37:38Speaker 2: room maybe at the at the hotel. Oh yes, by
- 37:42Speaker 2: the way, shout out to the Sleep Easy motel.
- 37:45Speaker 3: It's a great visual gag and everyone knows it. But
- 37:47Speaker 3: the light's blinking at the Sleep Easy and it becomes sleazy.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure the Sleep Easy Motel has been mentioned before,
- 37:54Speaker 2: and I wonder if they've actually used that gag before
- 37:56Speaker 2: it feels familiar, like the title of a hotel used
- 37:59Speaker 2: purely because they want to get that gag absolutely. All right, well,
- 38:03Speaker 2: let's get our skimming through of the episode. So original
- 38:06Speaker 2: edit of the episode was November two, nineteen ninety seven,
- 38:08Speaker 2: written by John Swartswater, directed by Pete Michael's chopboard gag.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Everyone is tired of that Richard Gear story. You want
- 38:14Speaker 2: to tell what the Richard Gear story is? Even everyone's
- 38:16Speaker 2: a really tired of it.
- 38:17Speaker 3: The Richard Gear story is apparently, when Richard Gear was
- 38:20Speaker 3: a young footlost and fancy free and looking for shall
- 38:23Speaker 3: we say, sexual thrills.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Part of those sexual thrills might.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Have involved a Gerbil going somewhere a Gerbil shouldn't. This
- 38:30Speaker 3: story was apparently spread by Sylvester Stallone. This is a rumor, allegedly,
- 38:35Speaker 3: just allegedly.
- 38:37Speaker 4: It's a rumor that Silvista Stallone spread it or the.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's Stallone spread it because he had beef
- 38:44Speaker 3: with Richard Gear back in the day. Apparently they were
- 38:46Speaker 3: like sort of strangely enough going up for the same parts.
- 38:49Speaker 2: And so it's just bizarre enough where you're like, fuck,
- 38:52Speaker 2: it might.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Be real Hollywood in the seventies could have been everyone's
- 38:58Speaker 3: coaked up. It could be doing just better and it
- 38:59Speaker 3: just gained legs over time. Well yeah, and yeah, everyone
- 39:03Speaker 3: saw that Richard Giarsory, especially Richard gear not to mention
- 39:06Speaker 3: the gerbil.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Yes and the cash gag. Everyone has their backsides on fire.
- 39:11Speaker 2: They run into the captures that has water in it
- 39:13Speaker 2: and it puts out to the puts out the fire.
- 39:15Speaker 2: So the episode kicks off with the ad that you
- 39:17Speaker 2: mentioned earlier, Ray, the Continental Soccer Association. It's got fast kicking,
- 39:21Speaker 2: low scoring and tires. You bet. And let's just discuss
- 39:25Speaker 2: the perception of soccer because never admitted that they didn't
- 39:28Speaker 2: really know all too much. And apparently I think it's
- 39:30Speaker 2: the referee. Maybe the referee the design of him is
- 39:32Speaker 2: the janitor at the Simpsons studios who basically told the
- 39:35Speaker 2: director everything he knows about soccer, so you can actually
- 39:38Speaker 2: design it. I mean, this is not so. This is
- 39:41Speaker 2: thirty years ago, right, and even in Australia. I'm not
- 39:43Speaker 2: too sure what it was like in New Zealand. But
- 39:45Speaker 2: soccer just was not a big sport and it's getting
- 39:47Speaker 2: it's getting more popular here. It's still know when in
- 39:49Speaker 2: the level of our homegrown sports. But it's growing. Of course,
- 39:53Speaker 2: the Matilda's got a lot to do with that soccer
- 39:55Speaker 2: reason and whatnot. But in America it's also growing slightly,
- 39:57Speaker 2: but it's never going to be on the level of
- 39:58Speaker 2: their sports. But it just coming out of this, did
- 40:01Speaker 2: you feel like they was just taking the piss out
- 40:03Speaker 2: of soccer?
- 40:05Speaker 4: I think there's no other way to look at it.
- 40:08Speaker 4: There's no one.
- 40:10Speaker 3: What I'm thinking is I think they're really tickled by
- 40:14Speaker 3: the economy of what you see on the field, or
- 40:16Speaker 3: what you frequently see on the field, which is a lot, yeah,
- 40:18Speaker 3: a fair bit of passing. Yeah, it's it's not exactly
- 40:21Speaker 3: grid iron crashing.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Into one another.
- 40:24Speaker 3: It's not modernday Gladiator or something like that. But your
- 40:26Speaker 3: contrast that with the extreme enthusiasm that some commentators will
- 40:30Speaker 3: have and as they demonstrated.
- 40:32Speaker 2: So great that moment he passes, it's holds it hold?
- 40:39Speaker 2: How are you excited to buy? But that that moment
- 40:42Speaker 2: there was Brockman and I'm gonna say the Spanish commentator,
- 40:44Speaker 2: maybe it is like the perfect just encapsulation of what
- 40:49Speaker 2: it's like for a non soccer fan watching soccer. It's
- 40:51Speaker 2: like how are you this excited over this? That's the
- 40:55Speaker 2: thing for many sports though, if you don't understand the rules,
- 40:58Speaker 2: then you just don't understand what you watching it. I'm
- 41:00Speaker 2: sure I don't understand the rules of soccer and football
- 41:03Speaker 2: for other our UK listeners. If I understood the rules,
- 41:05Speaker 2: I'll probably enjoy it more. But still we always fall
- 41:08Speaker 2: back in the mill old draw. What's the point?
- 41:12Speaker 3: I don't know when I went on watching like NRL
- 41:14Speaker 3: or something. I mean, I've only watched a few NRL games.
- 41:16Speaker 3: It's like you could put a gun to my head
- 41:19Speaker 3: and I could not explain the rules of this game.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I mean, you had to turn down a career as
- 41:24Speaker 2: a professional footballer for philosophy, right, right? Is that what happened?
- 41:29Speaker 4: I actually did. I actually did do soccer when I
- 41:32Speaker 4: was a kid. But even still I couldn't explain the
- 41:34Speaker 4: rules to you, Like I just I just don't know
- 41:36Speaker 4: sports at all, which I wonder is why it This
- 41:39Speaker 4: bit appeals to me so much because obviously they knew
- 41:42Speaker 4: very little about soccer as well. Apart from they knew
- 41:45Speaker 4: it was seemed to be a boring game to watch,
- 41:48Speaker 4: but the fans' passion was exceedingly high and the commentator.
- 41:55Speaker 4: The commentators. There's another gig from this episode that really
- 41:58Speaker 4: stuck with me, and I think was even in my
- 42:02Speaker 4: like in the school yard and stuff, like other kids
- 42:04Speaker 4: would say, you know, holds it, holds it, you know.
- 42:09Speaker 4: I think the immediate contrast between King Brockman and the
- 42:11Speaker 4: other guy, you could their jokes under. Kids can understand
- 42:15Speaker 4: that this idea that the yeah that that King Brockman
- 42:20Speaker 4: so so bored of this other guys. I think he's
- 42:23Speaker 4: watching the best game of his life.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I remember when I was a kid too, there was
- 42:26Speaker 2: always a perception of if you played soccer, it's because
- 42:28Speaker 2: you were too soft to play contact sports.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Oh.
- 42:31Speaker 2: It was just like, oh, you played soccer, you're not
- 42:34Speaker 2: tough enough to play football. I was like, oh, I
- 42:36Speaker 2: didn't play I didn't play soccer. Anybody. I was like,
- 42:38Speaker 2: go easy. And those kids, I mean, they don't want
- 42:40Speaker 2: to get tackle.
- 42:40Speaker 3: That probably don't want CT.
- 42:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm willing to put my hands up. I was
- 42:46Speaker 4: too soft to play football, but you were on soccer.
- 42:51Speaker 3: You were hardcoreing up for philosophy, Yes, exactly.

- 43:21Speaker 2: slash four figure discount. What are some of the biggest
- 43:24Speaker 2: difficulties to come with being Like when you're doing a debate,
- 43:27Speaker 2: like do you have any fears like being mid debate
- 43:29Speaker 2: not being able to come up with a response like
- 43:31Speaker 2: do you Did you ever have moments like that?
- 43:32Speaker 4: Yeah? Obviously as a philosophy you can sustain a lot
- 43:35Speaker 4: of injuries. You know, hit ache, something bit on the
- 43:39Speaker 4: tip of your tongue and you can't call.
- 43:40Speaker 2: It injuries to your in a soul.
- 43:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you never. So in philosophy, listen to classes, you
- 43:48Speaker 4: wouldn't do debates so much like I mean, you wouldn't
- 43:51Speaker 4: have arguments, but also in quite like structured debates where
- 43:54Speaker 4: you know there's set of set of teams on either
- 43:56Speaker 4: side arguing and stuff. When I used to run tutorials,
- 43:59Speaker 4: I would some times do that to try to force
- 44:01Speaker 4: the kids to adopt positions they didn't necessarily agree with
- 44:05Speaker 4: and stuff. But it's more what's the words, it's more
- 44:09Speaker 4: gentle than that. So even in the philosophy class, I
- 44:13Speaker 4: wasn't doing the extremes of debating. I was I was
- 44:16Speaker 4: too soft for that.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Are you more sort of nudging towards a consensus or
- 44:20Speaker 3: a common ground or yeah?
- 44:22Speaker 4: I guess well it's more yeah, not necessarily a consensus
- 44:25Speaker 4: because you know, depends on the class size. And also
- 44:28Speaker 4: you would never ever get agreement amongst everyone because people
- 44:31Speaker 4: just have different opinions and different base intuitions about the thing.
- 44:36Speaker 4: But it was a lot of like, you know, especially
- 44:39Speaker 4: an ethic to be something like you know, a professor
- 44:41Speaker 4: would present an idea and someone would say, oh, well
- 44:44Speaker 4: that's wrong because of this, and then the professor would
- 44:46Speaker 4: you know, present a counter example, and then you know,
- 44:49Speaker 4: someone else would have to try and reply on stuff,
- 44:52Speaker 4: and and.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Usual I think, I am.
- 44:59Speaker 4: How do you do?
- 44:59Speaker 2: You? You have to approach it differently when you said, sometimes
- 45:02Speaker 2: you give your students they have to make an argument
- 45:04Speaker 2: for something they don't actually believe, is what they truly believe, Like,
- 45:07Speaker 2: did you have that moment where you have to you
- 45:09Speaker 2: have to make an argument for something that you didn't
- 45:10Speaker 2: actually agree with. How do you approach that differently?
- 45:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm trying to remember. I mean I would have
- 45:16Speaker 4: had to in classes and things like that. But normally
- 45:20Speaker 4: in philosophy, I guess the essays you end up writing it's,
- 45:23Speaker 4: you know, pick a position or pick someone pick a
- 45:26Speaker 4: topic and write you know, what you think about it
- 45:28Speaker 4: and stuff. But often ye was you'd have to try
- 45:32Speaker 4: and carefully think about your opponent's position and then try
- 45:34Speaker 4: and sort of detail why it's wrong or why they
- 45:37Speaker 4: were committed to some sort of a logical thing that
- 45:40Speaker 4: they then they really should be embarrassed to believe and stuff.
- 45:44Speaker 4: But yeah, I felt like a big well, I mean,
- 45:47Speaker 4: I personally felt like an important part of the class
- 45:49Speaker 4: was making sure you're aware of what people you disagree
- 45:53Speaker 4: with thought and and why, and being able to understand
- 45:59Speaker 4: why they thought that or and to critique them properly,
- 46:02Speaker 4: you know, don't straw man them, don't misrepresent their position.
- 46:07Speaker 4: And then another big issue that I noticed this is
- 46:10Speaker 4: getting deep in the weeds of philosophy class now, but
- 46:13Speaker 4: you know, like for example, it's why people tune in
- 46:18Speaker 4: people come to the Simpsons podcast to listen to in
- 46:21Speaker 4: depth discussions about what a Wellington philosophy tutorials.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Were like, keep going please, But.
- 46:29Speaker 4: There I distinctly remember, at least with my first year students.
- 46:32Speaker 4: You know, we'd be say, we're discussing a topic like abortion.
- 46:35Speaker 4: I remember we discussed three different philosophers and all of
- 46:39Speaker 4: them had different arguments, but in I guess in support
- 46:42Speaker 4: of the what you'd call the pro choice position. I suppose,
- 46:45Speaker 4: or they thought abortion was morally permissible. But they all
- 46:48Speaker 4: had very different reasons why, and they would all disagree
- 46:52Speaker 4: with each other, and you know, they had very fundamentally
- 46:55Speaker 4: different outlooks and disagree and often the students were very
- 46:57Speaker 4: bad at being like it's very easy to just be like, oh,
- 47:01Speaker 4: they all agree, so it must all be the same,
- 47:03Speaker 4: or you'd have to be like, oh no, no, no, no, no,
- 47:05Speaker 4: these three people hate each other. It just so happens
- 47:09Speaker 4: they've arrived at the same conclusion. And there was there's
- 47:11Speaker 4: a lot of things that you know, understand the reasoning
- 47:14Speaker 4: it how someone got to a position.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Yeah, as a possible mage, I'm going to ask you
- 47:18Speaker 2: this one question. Then, Now, when did the Simpsons Golden
- 47:21Speaker 2: era through the end.
- 47:24Speaker 4: That's a good that's a good question. I think it
- 47:27Speaker 4: is end of season nine. I think I think season
- 47:30Speaker 4: ten is when it starts to produce more episodes of
- 47:35Speaker 4: maybe lower quality than high. I think I think it's
- 47:39Speaker 4: I think it's season ten. It's season ten, the one
- 47:42Speaker 4: where they were Homer crash lands in Alec Baldwin's house.
- 47:47Speaker 2: That sounds like it's a season ten one.
- 47:48Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Yeah, Okay, then I think I might. Yeah,
- 47:50Speaker 4: I'm standing by the by my position.
- 47:53Speaker 2: That's the Ron Howard gag at the end there again, So.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Yeah, your your argument is fundamentally flawed, morally, ethically, intellectually bankrupt.
- 48:08Speaker 2: You're right. I do feel like that's the point where
- 48:11Speaker 2: the show went from consistently just like Banger Banger Banger two,
- 48:15Speaker 2: oh good moments throughout the episodes, but not overall a
- 48:17Speaker 2: really entertaining episode.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, And I mean i'd have to. I mean,
- 48:22Speaker 4: when I was doing my rewatch, I did stop at nine.
- 48:25Speaker 4: And I think the only reason I can remember that
- 48:27Speaker 4: is I think I must have watched one or two
- 48:29Speaker 4: episodes of season ten on a plane or something and
- 48:32Speaker 4: be like, oh, okay, something's something's happened to here something.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Well, they did change the direction of the show. Mike
- 48:38Speaker 2: Scaley took over in season nine. He basically just he
- 48:42Speaker 2: took the approach of this is your work day, so
- 48:45Speaker 2: you can go home at five o'clock and see your
- 48:46Speaker 2: families for dinner, where it used to be No, you
- 48:48Speaker 2: guys are staying here until we get the right fucking
- 48:50Speaker 2: joke going home. You're going to live in this writer's room.
- 48:53Speaker 2: And he made a more balanced work life, which was
- 48:56Speaker 2: great for the writers, but I feel like the Simpson's
- 48:58Speaker 2: quality suffered as a result. But he also changed the direction.
- 49:01Speaker 2: That's where Joe Assomer was born. It was just becoming
- 49:03Speaker 2: a bit of an idiot, became more of a cartoon.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I justtinctly remember they're listened. There's a lot
- 49:10Speaker 4: of TV shows like that. Like I think Dan Harmon
- 49:12Speaker 4: on Community would run his riders late and late into
- 49:15Speaker 4: the night and everyone just be stuck in the writer's
- 49:18Speaker 4: room and he'd feel guilty and he'd be like, the
- 49:20Speaker 4: show has to be really, really good because I know
- 49:23Speaker 4: all the writers of Glee are going home at five
- 49:25Speaker 4: to see their families. I need to make sure that's
- 49:28Speaker 4: the thing.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Yeah, the more tyrannical show runners and all the more
- 49:33Speaker 3: driven creative people tend to be, often to the detriment
- 49:36Speaker 3: of their personal lives. It's a sad thing. But yeah,
- 49:39Speaker 3: often the quality of their material.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Can to be a bit better. Yes, and that's not always.
- 49:44Speaker 3: The case, but I think you'll find maybe more often
- 49:47Speaker 3: than not, that it is the case.
- 49:48Speaker 4: Yes, I didn't realize this. I didn't realize about the
- 49:52Speaker 4: tyrannical or the change and that there was a workplace
- 49:56Speaker 4: culture shifted and the Simpsons. I didn't realize that happened.
- 49:58Speaker 4: And I know people, I mean you guys have probably
- 50:02Speaker 4: discussed this to death, but I know there's currently a
- 50:05Speaker 4: debate emerging or a discussion emrgin that the Simpsons are
- 50:09Speaker 4: starting to get good again or there's become an uptick
- 50:12Speaker 4: and quality in the more recent seasons and have you guys.
- 50:17Speaker 2: We just threw out our We did the premiere or
- 50:19Speaker 2: review of the premiere of season thirty seven, which came
- 50:21Speaker 2: out about three weeks ago, and it's really good, pleasantly surprimed.
- 50:24Speaker 2: It's like, nothing's going to be on the level of
- 50:26Speaker 2: the first note three to nine seasons, right, not on
- 50:29Speaker 2: that level, So don't expect if you go in not
- 50:31Speaker 2: expecting that you'll be fine. But it's just they've they've
- 50:33Speaker 2: found the heart to the story again, more emotion to
- 50:37Speaker 2: the story, just for a good period there. We often
- 50:41Speaker 2: say are writing jokes and assigning it to a character
- 50:43Speaker 2: as opposed to writing a joke for a character. And
- 50:46Speaker 2: now it feels like they've really gone back to their
- 50:49Speaker 2: roots and they're all the jokes and all the stories
- 50:52Speaker 2: just feel true to who's saying the jokes, and just yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 2: the story is really entertaining and I really enjoyed it. Yeah.
- 50:57Speaker 2: So the last i'll say last two seas in particular,
- 51:00Speaker 2: I feel like they really started to sort of shift
- 51:02Speaker 2: back to the way things.
- 51:03Speaker 4: Were fantastic here. There was one there was one season.
- 51:06Speaker 4: I watched a couple of episodes, the one that it
- 51:08Speaker 4: opens with Conan O'Brien hosting the Simpsons finale.
- 51:12Speaker 2: That was last year.
- 51:13Speaker 4: Yeah, there was last year. And then there was one
- 51:15Speaker 4: where Marge was anxious about school photo day. I wasn't
- 51:19Speaker 4: maybe not necessarily a super funny episode, but I remember
- 51:22Speaker 4: a head like I really enjoyed it. And then and
- 51:25Speaker 4: then they've done some I guess, more high conceved episodes
- 51:28Speaker 4: later on that I've been fond of, like the the
- 51:32Speaker 4: is it called the Serious Flanders The Yeah, the two parter,
- 51:35Speaker 4: which is a Fargo parody or whatever.
- 51:38Speaker 7: That.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Like, episodes like that I think are phenomenal.
- 51:41Speaker 2: And that's what they're doing more of now. So Matt Salmon,
- 51:43Speaker 2: who was now the showmoner of the show, he's big
- 51:46Speaker 2: on the format bending episodes like that, Like he was
- 51:49Speaker 2: a Trilogy of Error, the Linguo, Yeah, I love that one.
- 51:53Speaker 2: So so he's big on those kinds of episodes. And
- 51:55Speaker 2: now I reckon it's probably five or six a season
- 51:57Speaker 2: now where there's just you know, from the get go, okay,
- 51:58Speaker 2: this isn't going to be a normal episod. It's almost
- 52:00Speaker 2: like a non horror treos of horror. And he just
- 52:03Speaker 2: enjoyed it for what it is, and it's just a
- 52:04Speaker 2: lot more fun because after thirty seven years, they're running
- 52:07Speaker 2: out of ideas obviously. So yeah, but I am yeah,
- 52:09Speaker 2: season thirty seven of the PREMI yere I really enjoyed it.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, fantastic, Well you have they wouldn't be running
- 52:15Speaker 3: out of ideas because life has always changed, and that's
- 52:17Speaker 3: what we actually mentioned in that review.
- 52:19Speaker 2: It feels like they've shifted the timeline of The Simpsons
- 52:22Speaker 2: at the beginning of this season. So basically what happens
- 52:24Speaker 2: is Marge has the TV breaks. The TV breaks, now
- 52:28Speaker 2: she turns off the TV because there's too many commercials
- 52:29Speaker 2: on streaming, so she turns off the TV. So we're
- 52:31Speaker 2: getting the DVD's out, and she's busted the DVD's of
- 52:34Speaker 2: this old TV show that used to watch, and they
- 52:36Speaker 2: binge watch it and it's a Dawson's Creek parody. But
- 52:39Speaker 2: it's almost like the Simpsons a Margin Homer were teens
- 52:41Speaker 2: or growing up sorry in the nineties, so it's almost
- 52:44Speaker 2: like now, if my kids are watching it, that makes
- 52:47Speaker 2: timeline sense wise because Margin Homer and my age and
- 52:50Speaker 2: I grew up in the nineties. So Margin Homer now
- 52:54Speaker 2: in Cannon grew up in the nineties because when I
- 52:56Speaker 2: was watching as a kid in the nineties, Margin Homer
- 52:59Speaker 2: and my parents age who grew up in the seventies.
- 53:01Speaker 2: So now it's almost like they've shifted the timeline twenty
- 53:03Speaker 2: years forward. So that makes more sense for younger view
- 53:05Speaker 2: It's almost like they've just recreated the show again. It's
- 53:07Speaker 2: it's really interesting.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Oh great, great, Yeah, so I do. I mean, maybe
- 53:11Speaker 4: I'm just stuck in my ways. But the idea of
- 53:14Speaker 4: seeing Lisa and Bard and stuff with iPods and you know,
- 53:18Speaker 4: then we're using smartphones and stuff. It always seems so
- 53:22Speaker 4: off off to me. But I know you need it.
- 53:24Speaker 4: They need it. They've always had a floating timeline to
- 53:26Speaker 4: keep up with modern events, but it always just SIPs
- 53:28Speaker 4: so bizarre.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, one thing we also touched on in that
- 53:33Speaker 2: episode in particular, was when I used to have iPods
- 53:35Speaker 2: and things like that. They made it a joke, like
- 53:37Speaker 2: it's my point, and they made it like a thing like,
- 53:39Speaker 2: well look at look where we're hip. Where we're with
- 53:41Speaker 2: it with current technology. But they use current technology in
- 53:43Speaker 2: this new episode. But it wasn't the gag. It was
- 53:45Speaker 2: just that were just using it. That's what That's what
- 53:48Speaker 2: kids use now. It's not a joke. It's just they
- 53:50Speaker 2: get out their phones and they get at this, and
- 53:51Speaker 2: it's like, oh, this just feels like kids in twenty
- 53:54Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 53:54Speaker 4: You know.
- 53:55Speaker 3: I think it's a lesson that we've learned as we've
- 53:57Speaker 3: sort of progressed in the twenty first century and realized
- 53:59Speaker 3: that okay, look, tech is part of our lives. Is
- 54:01Speaker 3: always going to be some new gadget, some new device
- 54:03Speaker 3: rather than go the internet. Yeah, I mean, yeah, yes, yes,
- 54:09Speaker 3: I mean not five years now, five minutes from now
- 54:11Speaker 3: going to look like a chump, so you might as
- 54:13Speaker 3: well just yeah, just incorporated into the storyline is like,
- 54:15Speaker 3: this is the way we operate now, and if you know,
- 54:17Speaker 3: ten years from now, people go, remember we used to
- 54:19Speaker 3: have that thing where we trace our kids using our phones,
- 54:22Speaker 3: Like yeah, sure that's what happened, you know, But when
- 54:25Speaker 3: we're not saying, check out this whacky new device. Wow,
- 54:28Speaker 3: how wild is it? Living in the future. That's ridiculous.
- 54:30Speaker 2: It's the same with comedy too. You have to change
- 54:32Speaker 2: your approach in the way you promote your shows. You
- 54:34Speaker 2: Social media is a big thing now. That's probably the
- 54:36Speaker 2: biggest tool now for marketing new shows, right.
- 54:38Speaker 4: Yes, one hundred percent, yeah, yeah, yes, And I mean
- 54:40Speaker 4: speak yourself.
- 54:41Speaker 3: I've got a very nice handwritten letter from racing coming
- 54:43Speaker 3: to John.
- 54:45Speaker 4: Tell your friends personal flyers, I'm startings. I've got pigeons
- 54:49Speaker 4: carrying notes, you know, yeah, one hundred percent. And I mean,
- 54:56Speaker 4: you know, old comedian or commedians from previous generations, so
- 54:59Speaker 4: I really respect you know, they obviously hate social media,
- 55:02Speaker 4: and we all hate social media to an extent. But unfortunately,
- 55:06Speaker 4: refusing to go on social media or doing any kind
- 55:09Speaker 4: of marketing through social media would be the same as
- 55:12Speaker 4: you know, refusing to appear on a radio show back
- 55:15Speaker 4: in the fifties or whatever, or refusing to appear on
- 55:18Speaker 4: TV in the nineties, and they were all willing to
- 55:20Speaker 4: do that, and there's just social media has now replaced
- 55:23Speaker 4: that or usurped it, you know, there's no more what's
- 55:26Speaker 4: my line for me to hit me to appear.
- 55:28Speaker 3: On Yeah, Well, like a handgun ray, social media is
- 55:31Speaker 3: a tool that can be used a good or.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Bad, nice segway, So back to.
- 55:40Speaker 7: That.
- 55:41Speaker 2: Basically, here, what happens is they all bought it the
- 55:43Speaker 2: soccer and they realized quickly they don't understand what's going on,
- 55:45Speaker 2: and then nothing's happening to them, and a riot breaks out.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Just their way of saying, riots breakout soccer all the time.
- 55:51Speaker 2: That's a known thing, like soccer riots, and they break
- 55:53Speaker 2: out because they're bored, That's what they're basically saying here.
- 55:55Speaker 2: And I really liked in the riot that doctor Hibbittt
- 55:58Speaker 2: was beating up doctor Nie.
- 56:00Speaker 4: So I noticed that.
- 56:03Speaker 3: Legitimate medicine beats junk medicine.
- 56:06Speaker 4: It's so funny that the ride begins because they're all
- 56:09Speaker 4: trying to exit, and n is so worried. There's plenty
- 56:12Speaker 4: of exits for everyone else.
- 56:16Speaker 2: I particularly also like just when they were board, it's
- 56:19Speaker 2: just quiet, and his home is the abnoxiou jet. The
- 56:21Speaker 2: standard boring.
- 56:26Speaker 7: Half back passes to the center, back to the wing,
- 56:30Speaker 7: back to the center center, holds it, holds it.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Holds it, half.
- 56:39Speaker 1: Buck bassist, center back, the wing back to center, center
- 56:42Speaker 1: holds it holds it holds it.
- 56:45Speaker 2: So everyone leaves as you're saying, I love the guy
- 56:48Speaker 2: with the valet picks up his carp as everyone the
- 56:51Speaker 2: whole place is falling apart.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Sorry, that's another great gag that's just about to come
- 56:56Speaker 4: with where Kim Brockmans is May Quimby I made quimbly,
- 57:01Speaker 4: swiftly to.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Clear every family for themselves.
- 57:15Speaker 4: Such good, right, I mean, that's and that is the
- 57:17Speaker 4: yea what I love in comedies. And I think with
- 57:21Speaker 4: the rise in dramatis, you're sadly seeing fear and fear
- 57:23Speaker 4: of it. But I just love a comedy where every
- 57:26Speaker 4: line they've squeezed a gag and every every vision there's
- 57:29Speaker 4: like a little bit of a joke or something, you know,
- 57:31Speaker 4: and they're just, you know, worked, they've clearly worked so
- 57:34Speaker 4: so hard to make every moment of the show super
- 57:36Speaker 4: super funny.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And we were viewing season twenty one of the
- 57:40Speaker 2: shot at the moment, we're going through in order and
- 57:43Speaker 2: we get to some lines and we go, that's fine,
- 57:45Speaker 2: but it feels like there could have been a joke there. Yeah,
- 57:48Speaker 2: but you just either a time where you couldn't be bothered,
- 57:50Speaker 2: and he feels like, this is season seven, there would
- 57:53Speaker 2: have been two jokes here in this one line, even
- 57:56Speaker 2: to squeeze in.
- 57:56Speaker 3: I don't think it's exact music because they've used it
- 57:59Speaker 3: on more than one occasion, but the mock time Star Trek,
- 58:04Speaker 3: they don't quite have it during the during the soccer ride,
- 58:07Speaker 3: but it's close enough that you go, I've.
- 58:09Speaker 2: Used it before.
- 58:10Speaker 3: This is just you know, short this usually chaos. Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 3: shortham for chaos.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Yeah. But yeah, so he said it's mobile. As we're saying,
- 58:16Speaker 2: Home says he's got his own alarm system and it's
- 58:19Speaker 2: just the fish. Much like watch the fish. Someone someone's
- 58:26Speaker 2: trying to break it, Just watch the fish.
- 58:29Speaker 4: I was lucky at that. Trying to figure out what
- 58:31Speaker 4: it could have. I was like, there's like it's it's
- 58:37Speaker 4: really cleverly designed. Shout out to whover drew it. And
- 58:40Speaker 4: you know designed it because there's the alarm clock, so
- 58:42Speaker 4: you're like, so there's like an element of it where
- 58:44Speaker 4: you're like, okay, there is an alarm here, so.
- 58:47Speaker 2: It's meant to be alarming, and that someone at the door,
- 58:49Speaker 2: they're already aware. Just watch the fish though. The next day,
- 58:55Speaker 2: ex con hope security from the big House to your house.
- 58:58Speaker 2: He's arrived and he's going to try and them a
- 59:00Speaker 2: security system, and he's saying, you're just stealing Shit's a cigarette,
- 59:04Speaker 2: takes TV, not the TV, just the TV remote. It
- 59:09Speaker 2: just has to steal something. But he's basically just saying
- 59:11Speaker 2: that you can't put a price on your kids, on
- 59:13Speaker 2: your family safety, you've got I think it's a loose
- 59:15Speaker 2: sight you're going to put around the windows and stuff
- 59:17Speaker 2: occasionally see them in here. And Homer's like, we'll take it,
- 59:19Speaker 2: but unfortunate it's five hundred dollars, so we can't afford it,
- 59:21Speaker 2: and just throws him out, and surely you can put
- 59:22Speaker 2: a price in your family's lives. Yeah, well I thought
- 59:24Speaker 2: so I would have thought it, but.
- 59:25Speaker 4: Yeah, we Yeah, it's another grade. Homer interacting with a
- 59:29Speaker 4: handy man on his front door set is the one.
- 59:31Speaker 4: Maybe it's when the basement floods and it's just a
- 59:34Speaker 4: simple fifty cent or fifty cents bolesorn up that he
- 59:39Speaker 4: needs to screw it, and he goes, no, no, no
- 59:41Speaker 4: can upsell me because I've got I'll just go grab
- 59:45Speaker 4: it for yourself.
- 59:46Speaker 2: That's the that's the stone Cutter episode. And then and
- 59:49Speaker 2: then it turns out the guy who just like turned
- 59:51Speaker 2: you stone cut I'll fix it for you. Marge's worried.
- 59:54Speaker 2: He says, we need protection. Homer says, I guarantee protection.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Cut to him at Blood barb and Beyond. He's going
- 59:58Speaker 2: to get himself a gun. And I was six next
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: to the sympathy card.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Not just any gun. You're deadliest gun.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Nobody says you dead this gun. Yes. So he come
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: back from commercial and Homer he's got the point of
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: view point in the gun. So it's twice in the
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: episode he's pointing the gun directly the camera turns it
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: to Wise Guy and pulls the trigger like several times,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: like did he know it wasn't loaded. It's not just
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: it's like he tries to annihilight this man.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Oh god, sorry, I got little nerdy cyber. This reminded
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: me of something. I was watching this documentary on the
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: weekend called Mister Scorsese.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: I saw yeh tweet about it a few times.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Fantastic doc. I highly recommended. But of course he's the
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: director of Taxi Driver. I remembering this anecdote about Paul Trader,
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: the writer a Taxi Driver. Now this was either before
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: they made the movie just afterwards, but like went to
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: a gun store in Beverly Hills, got his hands on
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: a little handgun and he sort of he's just waving
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: it around in the shop, like putting people in his sights,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: and all the people that were like if anyone should
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: not own a gun, it's this man, right, It's like
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: the writer of Taxi Driver.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I wonder if the Simpsons Swatsworld knew that. Oh god,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: it's just it's the pull go easy there and the
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: ugly who was a apparently famous sharpshooter from Buffalo Bills
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: whild West in the eighteen hundred. Yeah that's right, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: Trick shot. Yeah, she's a constant reference. I watched the
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: TV show Jippardy and she's a constant answer and the
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: very big in the American education system. She must maybe any.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: We're not learning the ABC's, but we learn the ant.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe any get your gun? That might be oh.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. Anyway, So Jeopardy, what's what's the like of
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: the new host? Now? Is it the same to be?
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: My wife and I big fans of Wheel of Fortune?
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Call me crazy?
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: And then they changed the host and I'm like, it
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: just doesn't feel the same anymore.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: From Pep to Ryan Seacrest.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: He's not Pat Sajag.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Tribec's not hosting Jeopardy anymore.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: By the way, is okay?
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: So I get I've told you three times he's dead.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: I didn't even know he was sick.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Gameshow wonnans who are no longer alive for two hundred dollars.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: So I started watching after the Tripic era, So I
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: really yah? Wow, So I haven't I never got to
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: I guess get used to him. But obviously his stature
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: looms and he was obviously very good. But I do
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: think the current host, King Jennings, who's a former Jeopardy champion,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: current game show champion and a mirror or you know,
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: he's got a record. We've got one of the records
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: for winning the most money and game show history. Anyway,
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: he's very good at noses stuff.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: So you're like a you're like a kid saying I
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: only watched season thirty one with that golden era, the
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: era of Jeopardy with it only post movie for me,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: thanks the rest of that.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Yeah, ask you questions about the nineties now, whereas I
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: should go back to the nineties and watched the watch
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: the Usk question.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: What's your thoughts on the Simpsons getting a second movie?
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Do you have memories of the first movie when it
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: came out?
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Yes, very yeah, very distinct movies. I remember I had
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: a friend who wasn't allowed to go, and his parents
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: or his host family rather made him go and watch
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Amazing Grace, the anti slavery film instead.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: He wasn't allowed to you how old was he at
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: the time.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: It was, yeah, my age, so that's yeah, well we
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: were in high school. Yeah, so we were Yeah, I
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: mean the rest of us with no parental guardians.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: So you're going to be warped by an animated penis?
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: Yes, I remember that. I remember that was like a
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: huge like that was crazy. I think that, I guess
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: because it had been such a it was a kind
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: of a trope in the Simpsons before that they would always,
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: you know, whenever a character was naked, that always so
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: carefully hide the.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Full front of you the bum some powers of that ship.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Yah, yes, exactly. But then in the movie just just
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: suddenly they just were like for our hot stick.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: And Wang a child's waging too, So you're like, it's funny,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: but it's like also awkward. I'm living out of ten
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: year old's will you what are we doing here?
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: Yeah? I remember, I remember loving it, and I don't
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: know how. I think I've only ever really watched it
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: once since then, so I don't I can't really comment
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: on it, but I remember really really enjoying it. I
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: remember the gag right at the start where Homer stands
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: up and says, hey, we're watching a movie of a
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: TV show we could be at home watching for free
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: or you know that's.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that was it was a giant sucker, including you.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Ray, just so you know, Ray, we are clipping
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: that bit where Dano said and by the way, it's
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: a ten year old's penis and you're saying, yeah, I
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: really like that, So I hope you' enjoying your cancelation, buddy.

- 1:05:13Speaker 2: thirty seven premier episode we're talking about before starts with
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: the family driving to the cinema for the premiere night
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: of a new movie, and Bart says on the way,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: I think of all these jerks that are waiting for
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: three days to watch it for free on streaming, and
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: they slam the braakes, turn around and go home again.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: It's a very similar game.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: Yeah great, but yeah, I'm I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: Like again, it sounds like the Simpsons are sort of
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: having a renaissance. I guess you'd say they're improving. And
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: then for something like a movie. I do think they'll
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: try and bring the A game and bring you know, rewrite,
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: and so I'm I'm positively predisposed. And even the fact
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: that they've waited this long makes me, I don't know,
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: it does so, I mean sometimes then whening that long
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: makes it seem like it's gonna be even more of
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: a shameless cash grab and they're just but I don't know.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: I feel like, I don't know. They brought the A
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: game for the Simpsons movie, and I think they produced
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: a really fun movie at a time when the show
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: maybe wasn't at its peak, and now that the show's
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: improving and they're going to do another movie, and I
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: feel like the way people are talking now about the
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: Simpsons is it could be its last hurrah. Like people
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: are saying, maybe after this four season renewal, the show
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: might end, so you know, this could be you know,
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: this last big moment. So yeah, hopefully they stick the landing.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Call me crazy, I've got a theory for this new
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: renaissance of the Simpsons, right, So, for the longest time,
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: because you're big in the Simpsons mean groups, you're aware
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: that their mentality is new Simpsons.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: Shit.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Oh Simpson's good. Right now, A lot of people are saying,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: you know what, new Simpsons an't so bad? Ye know, well, whatever,
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: it's fine. I think what's happened is we grew up
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: with the show. We stopped watching the show. A lot
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: of people stopped watching the show, and then even though
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: they weren't watching it, they were just saying it's bad,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: even though they weren't actually watching it. And then these
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: people got older and they got married and they had kids,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: and then they wanted to introduce their kids to the Simpsons,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: and they introduced them to the Golden episodes, a Golden
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Episodes and whatnot. And then these kids, like my kids
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: went what are the new Ones? And they put on
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: the new ones and these people who for all this
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: time were saying new Ones are no good, actually sat
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: down and watched the new Ones with their kids and
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: see their kids enjoying it, and they finally realized, oh shit,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: wait a minute, these new episodes are for the kids,
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: not for me. And they've finally realized, oh, maybe they're
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: not so bad. And that's what's happened.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: Yes, one hundred percent. And I do think while I
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: met there's a droppn quality. I think, ye, the way
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: some people talk about the dropping quality online is quite extreme,
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: but I do still think, you know, it is still
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: the Simpsons, and it is still a bitter than what
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: a lot of others sitcoms on TV, you know, like
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: even I mean, I mean, well, there are some really
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: trashy episodes of the Simpsons, but like, you know, an average,
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: you know, mid tier Simpsons episode is still going to
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: be a lot better than you.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Know, some man standing exactly, yeah.
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: Exactly, some of the gunk that you know, you just
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: almost make that tim Ellen Grum.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Just I've been known to an occasion, I mean, I'm
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: a fantasy amount and I watch one of these what
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: these new show was, Shifting Gears. I've got like two
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: episodes in. I was like, ah, this is just mate exactly.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: And the Simpsons, I don't think has ever truly been
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: that bad, you know.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: So that's all.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, that's just my theory that the people
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: have gotten old, have had kids, and then realize, oh
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: wait a minute, now I can enjoy the show with
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: my kids, enjoy the show again.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: And I think that a Simpson, a seeking Simpsons movie
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: is big enough that they're going to really really try
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: and make it good, and it seems that there's a
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: chance that it could be the show's swan song, so
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: they'll really try, you know, go out on a high.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: That's I'm feeling optimistic. I don't know about you, guys,
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: I'm seeing some skepticism.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Or personally, I feelt the Simpsons will never stop. It'll
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: still exist in some way. They're already starting to implement
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Disney Plus specials, so Disney Plus exclusive episodes, so now
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: the seasons are actually shorter. I think this season's only
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: going to be seventeen episodes on TV, but there's like
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: two or three that are going to be excluici for
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Disney Plus. So I think they're just testing the waters here,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: and I think eventually it'll just be a Disney Plus
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: show because it's sill one of the most watch shows
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: on Disney Plus, and obviously that streaming service has been
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Disney Plus making the show far more accessible has also
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: played a big role in helping the show find a
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: new audience as well.
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: Yes, I also think there's something so funny in the
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: fact that The Simpsons keeps skitting renewed long beyond the
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: time that anyone thought it was good. Like that that's
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: inherently a very funny thing that keeps happening. Like every
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: year I see this news that the show's been renewed,
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: and that I find hilarious, and there's like a cosmic
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: there's like it's, you know, not a joke necessarily by
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: the Simpsons, but there's some sort of cosmic joke about
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: the Simpsons. And so I enjoy that it keeps skintting renewed,
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: and I hope that it never ends.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: That's why I think it's like season thirteen or season fourteen.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: They had to have no fear. We've got stories for
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: years clip shows like that. That was like twenty years ago.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: That episode, right.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: God, I don't know if it's the same one, but
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: where Troy McClure comes out and says, you know, and
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: Mary Williams after Williams after Williams, and let's selma marry
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: in itchy and.
- 1:10:08Speaker 7: HM, whoa careful there, any Oakley?
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: I don't have to be careful. I got a gun.
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: Well you probably want the accessory, kid Holster. Oh yeah,
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: BENDOLIU babe silent soup louder Now speed Cocker would like
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: to sound to that. And this is for shooting down
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: police helicopters.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Oh, I don't need anything like that. Ye, just give
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: me my gun.
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: Sorry, the law requires a five day waiting period. We've
- 1:10:38Speaker 7: got to run a background check five days.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: But I'm mad, now kill you if I had my gun.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, well you don't.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Whyse guys always got to come back, ye ladies.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: Mumbling to himself, he's just he's angry at life right now.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: It's just cracky. He's down the hallway, three am, Lisa
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: is I can be quiet, mud, kick me out, push
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: the kids and they can tell her to do in
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: my own house. Then Homer's about waiting at the front.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: And this is a really memorable time, like everyone remembers
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: this one. So he's sitting at the front with his
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: ammo over in his belt, waiting for the chance to
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: have his gun, and all these things go past it.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: He would love to shoot. So it starts off with
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the target departments, the target truck. We've got a family
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: of ducks, some rabbits, Patty and Salm would go pass
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: on the bike, and then Flanders goes past on his
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: right arm mow.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: But it's now time, by the way, all to the
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: tune of Tom Pitty and the Heartbreakers, the Waiting my
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: favorite TP and the Heartbreaking song.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: Wow, I just love it when the song is well,
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: when a song I like is deployed, when it's deployed
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: perfectly like this, like it is here thematically, and yeah,
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: love it, love it.
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: I looked it up online and I saw that he
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: Tom Pitty very rarely grants the use of his music,
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: but he's a fan of the Simpsons.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: So yeah, he was on the Simpsons.
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: Yeah, Oh, really fantastic.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: Have you not seen the rock Camp episode with Mick
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Jagger and Tom Petty and whatnot as it later on
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: maybe season fifteen, it's where it's a really good episode,
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: so Lenny Kravitz Homi goes to Rocks rock Camp and
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: it's got Lenny Kravitz, Jagger and Keith Keith's It's really good.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Yes, that's fantastic. I always remember that Bob Dylan. Bob
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: Dylan turned down playing the Coyote and Homer's and then
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: and because he, I don't know, doesn't want to do
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: some TV show whatever, and then he agreed to appear
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: and I was it some sort of Coca collar ad
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: in the Super Bowl where he sort of praised Amera
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: Karna and talked about how great a miracle was, and
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: I remember being so mad and that he'd appear in
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: this random, awful coke ad but turned down. One of
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: the great episodes of The Simpsons anyway.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: That we got Johnny Cash instead.
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: Johnny Cash was great.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: You know why that was the case?
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: Ray?
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: What's that big fat bag with the dolls?
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: Works every time? It's like, you haven't a bag. I
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: don't want to draw a dollar symbol on it.
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: You don't say it moved me to a house?
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: So good? But yeah, So he arrives as soon as
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: they open. He looks all excited to get into the store,
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: but it's actually because he wants to use the toilet.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: And then they say he's got a background check. You've
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: been to a mental institution, frequent problems with alcohol, You
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: beat a former president, former President Bush, and he stamped
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: as potentially dangerous. Now I don't worry, which means you're
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: limited to three handguns? Still fine, yes, three hand guns
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: or less. So then he walks inside. He says, Marjor,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: you're surprised for you close your eyes. She opens up
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: and she has a gun pointed in her face. This
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: is the trigger and this is the thing you point out,
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: whatever you wanted to tail. I'm glad that mar she's
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: stuck very true to her character. And at the end
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: of the nice little rud Pool where she actually likes
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: the gun, but it's just it's very much from the
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: go to watch she's like, I don't want guns in
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: my house, and you think Homer comes across poorly like
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: a bad husband. Even at the end here at Tech
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: the gun away. I won't be able to. But it's
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: almost like an added isn't it an addict acknowledging I
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: don't I'm not strong enough help me.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: I think that's what the episode does really well, is
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: it recognizes the allure. Yeah, I mean, and look, America
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: is complicit in this in a lot of ways because
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: you know, so much of its entertainment is based around,
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: you know what, what's the only thing to stop a
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: bad man with a gun? Good man with a gun.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: It's been sort of a drilled in from the from
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: the get go.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I feel like Homer is the confision there
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: and sort of like, yeah, him and that in his weakness,
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: So that feels there, feels okay, that part where it's
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: like take this away, you know, like he is still
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: saying I want to do right by you, but he
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: just knows he can't. But up until that point, he
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: has been a very bad Yeah.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: I mean you think he sort of redeems himself with
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: a line near the end where you know, it's very
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: much the thesis line of the episode. So you know,
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: what's the point of having a gun for protection if
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: you've got no one to protect?
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: But yeah, even after that, he's still yeah, still a gun.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: Now, what are your thoughts on when they break the
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: fourth wall? So they acknowledge here that because she brings
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: up how Maggie one shot mister, and someone's like, oh,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: well Smithers did it? Now that would have made more sense.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Are you a fan of these ones where acknowledging something
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: from within the show, within their own universe?
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: Yes, I think so. I don't. I don't mind it.
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: It didn't seem bizarre to me that when I was watching,
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: I think, and I don't mind a show doing that.
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: Like there are some well, I think so, I've watched
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: the television show at Glee, for example, and the writing
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: and Glee, especially towards the end, gets very sloppy. And
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: then what they will do is they'll kind of like
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: do a cheeky reference to be like, oh, I don't
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: I can't remember if I was doing this or that,
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: or you know, they they're sort of acknowledging the bad writing.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: But it's like, no, the writing was just always like
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: it's not funny to be like haha. I think there
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: was an inconsistency here. It's like, no, that you guys
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: just shouldn't have written it bad in the first place,
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: whereas I feel like The Simpsons is different. I feel
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: like the Simpsons kind of earns like I think they
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: earn being a bit cheeky about their writing about being like, oh, yeah,
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: we didn't do the obvious thing or whatever, like because
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: it wasn't. I don't. I don't think it was bad
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: writing at the time.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Do you remember the Who Shot Mister Burns when it
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: first aired? Was it a big deal in New Zealand?
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: As a kid, h I may.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: Have been too young to appreciate it, but I do
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: think I do recall there being ads about it, Like
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: I feel like I can remember being in my grandparents'
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: house and seeing ads about who shot Mister Boons and
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: stuff on TV.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: I remember my dad had a bet my sister and
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: I we had a little notepad. We've watched part one.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: We're going to work out who did it right. I
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: thought it smid that she thought it was somebody else.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Can I quite remember? And my dad just goes, I reckon,
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Maggie did it. And we're like, Daddy, as if, Maggie,
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: what are you doing? And it turns out I didn't
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: realize the later on we thought he was a genius
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: when he was actually right. I'm like, how do you
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: know any For years and years he was just like, well,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: you know. I decided I had a good guess. I
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: thought the clues are all there, and I was like, wow.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: It turns out in Australia on one of the Triple
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: AM or Fox if IM or whatever, the guy in
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: the radio leaked it because we were like six months
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: behind in the show. So he has a joke goes, oh,
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: yeah it was the baby as a joke, got fired
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: from his job for doing it because it was such
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: a big deal. But my dad was listening to the radio,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: got cheer gold and then and then that's what happens.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: That's how my dad knew. But for years my dad
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: put up this made it, made himself like a god.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: We thought he was a genius because he knew Maggie
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: did it.
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, I mean I've read about how they
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: put in clues and stuff in the episodes, like all
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: the clocks are pointing one way and YadA YadA, But yeah,
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: that's not I don't think it's obvious at all. But
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: but I did like that they kind of carried it on.
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: Like there's an episode later on in the not so
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: Golden Era where Maggie shoots at a bunch of mafioso
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: from her crib and then puts the gun under her pillow,
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: Like I like, I like that that she's her character
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: is now like a gun toting maniac.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Yeah, the asked to borrow the gun to scared security
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: at the bank. This is only if you clean your room, Marches.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: I'm taking this away because fifty you're fifty epercent more
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: likely to shoot your family member than true. That's what
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: TV said. TV said that. I love that Marge is
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: now smart enough to know she has to say TV
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: said it, that's how you get through to this person,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: to her husband, and he says, I have to have
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: one says so in the Constitution, and this is the
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: fallback that we always have here who lives outside the States.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: The Constitution is so outdated now, like it doesn't make
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: sense when they wrote that these guns, like you didn't
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: have some of the automatics and whatnot.
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: Well, it's funny that they keep mentioning the King of
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: England because may I think that's essentially what the Second
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: Amendment was about, Like the Brits could come back anytime, reclaimed. Yeah,
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: this country that was quote unquite originally theirs.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, you're.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: Probably justified in having your musket under you know, the
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: red coats, gum pushing when you come out and pushing
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: you around. Do you do you?
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: I love Lisa's such a good daughter that she takes
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: the rhetorical questure from Homer in genuine fashion and no
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: of England.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: But this guy obviously worked better than ninety seven because
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: at that time it was the queen. But now obvious
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: we've got a king again. But like in ninety seven,
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: it's like, not only is it an outdated thing to
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: have a gun, but it's outdated the fact that it's
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: saying the King of England. It wasn't even the king anymore,
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: you know, But now we're going to King again, but
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Marshall says, no more weapons in his house. A number
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: points out it's not a weapon, it's a tool like
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: a butcher's knife or a harpoon or an alligator. It
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: just more education on the subject. So he invites her
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: to the NRA meeting and if she still doesn't like guns,
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: then we'll argue some more. They arrive at the meeting
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: and it says on the sign, come in and shoot
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: your mouth off. And they're going through this gag here,
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: going through the security, so it's beeping, beeping. Beeping doesn't
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: beat for Kenney, so Lou the police officer, hands him
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: a gun, so that does beep. Then Lenny is chatting here,
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Lenny very pro guns, chatting about automatic rifles, and they've
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: been getting a lot of bad press lately. The matter factured,
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: but then manufacturer take it. Today's modern super animals like
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: flying squirrels or I'll let your geels And it's almost
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: like an AA meeting. So Moe introduced himself as Mo
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: s Imo tells his story about how this young punk
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: tried to rob him as he was closing up the thing.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: What'd you do? No smell? Whatever did you do?
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: Mo?
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Oh, it could have got ugly, but I shut him
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: in the spine. They all applaud next place, next place,
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: you got a rob. But I have a reverence the
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: applause in the spine.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Homer rat.
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: Hi.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: It seems to me if a gun can protect something
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: as important as a bar, it's good enough to protect
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: my family. So if you'll have me, I would like
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: to become a lifetime member of your wonderful organization.
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: You can't join up with these gun nuts.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: Oh, come on, be fair, March, what in your life
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: be fair?
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Then at the shooting range, Agnes is throwing a grenade.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: Shoot the cans. It turns out to be the candy
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: ba It also.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: Turns out to be thinking, oh is this one of
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: those things her home? Is actually going to be really
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: good at stuff? Because like he's really nailing those cares.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Oh of course he's back. Yeah, and we get a
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: great moment. So he enters the quickie mart spinning his
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: gun around, just being reckless with it. Who thinks he's
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: about to be rob? Take whatever you want? And then
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: we get home. It is like like I rob the
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: quiet discussing so stupid but also just so funny. He
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: got the monocle in the monicle signify is just rich
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: sash that says.
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: Senators like, I'm pretty sure any senator has never worn
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: a sash, that.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: Every rich president of the Simpsons has to have a monicle.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but one of your favorite characters that my
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: word late.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Anytime someone can scandalize a monocle, falls out and drink
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: the drink, but decides he's going to rob the quickie mart.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: It turns out he's just been daydreaming this whole time
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: and he's down in the car. Well, I just rob
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: it next time. Then he helps he gets home, helps
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Lisa get her ball down by shooting it. Want me
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: to get the cat down? No thanks. Then he's shooting
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: plates like the but the clay pigeons. Yeah, like o pigeons.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Yeah with bart missus one see you and how dinner plate?
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Then the family now or eating their spaghetti added glasses
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: and as you were saying, he followed saucepans and whatnot,
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: And Homer says, you bold March, you probably left your
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: dinner plates at work. Then Homer says that he's peaked
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: to be the host of the next NRA get together.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: I love that they call it get together as well. Okay,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: just makes us seem more family friendly. It's get together,
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: It's fine, never worry about it. And Marsh has no
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: guns at the dinner table, Homer, you know, the breakfast table,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: at the same table. And he puts the safety on,
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: and this is great. This is actually a horrific moment.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: But it's actually a genius that I would make comedy
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: out of it. So thinks he got the safety on.
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: Boom shoots the photo of March must have been on.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Puts shoot the photo of March again.
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: Even He's like, ship, I'm just gonna put this down.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Puts it down, waits, It's like two seconds of nothing,
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: and then boom goes up again, hits up, ricochets or
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: something gets the knife stabs in the head. And even
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: Lisa boys that you gotta me. That's pretty cool, Homer.
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: I think you would agree that I've put up with
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: a lot in this marriage. But this is the first
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: time since we've been married that I've actually feared for
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: our lives. So I'm asking you, if you really care
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: about me and the children, please please get rid of
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: the gun.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: All right, marriage, I'll do it for you.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: I'm a lucky woman.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: And I'm a wonderful man.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: Then bought millhouse and now going through the fridge, you're
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: looking for the fudge seaguless, which is the fudgs of
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: fudge seagules. That's a fudge sickle. I say fudgy. Do
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: you say fudge stackle? I did? I say fudgl I'll
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: just say ice cream. Have you ever said that word
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: at Lanta?
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: No, it's not a New Zealand. Do you guys have
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: them in Australia? It's not a New.
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: Zealand are uniquely American.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: Do you know what they call them in England? Iced lollies?
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: Oh? Yeah, horrific? Yeah?
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: Like, what are we doing here? I always tell the
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: story how my wife's from England, so I went to
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: meet her family. We first thy over there. My wife
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: didn't know. It's a surprise, and my wife's mom picked
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: me up from the airport. Were driving home. She goes, oh,
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: do you want anything from the supermarket whilst I'm in here?
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: I said our bag of lollies would be good, and
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: she looked at me funny, was okay?
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: Sure?
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, just just any lollies. I don't care,
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: Just a bag of lollies and she comes out with
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: a bag of lollipops and I was like, oh no,
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: I said lolly, she goes oh sweets. It's like I'm
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: wondering why this twenty year old man was asking for
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: a bag of lollipops. By the way, do you have
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: an unmarked VAINI? Yeah, but I just remember remember the
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: look on her face when I asked for a bag
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: of lollies. It was just like confusion, just like do
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: I want to actually bring this man to my house
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: to what this meant to be? My dad? What's going
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: on here? This show was brought to you by the

- 1:25:18Speaker 2: the UK. They partly It's very bizarre, like do you
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: have any issues like that when you go to the UK?
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Because they call capsic and pepper obviously and things like that.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: Yes, lots of little things. It's really annoying because like, yeah,
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: I wrote a joke about mattress protectors and and so.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Here's a very good gag by the way, oh.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: Thank you very kind. But here in Australia they're called douners.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: Overseas it's called doves.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: Is this do?
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot of little things that I feel
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: I can influence the cadence of a joke, and like
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: how many syllables you have and things like that. I
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: think if poss machine is not is not a term
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: in the UK after they use card reader, And it's
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: just again I always purposely try right, you know, jokes
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: that in theory all the universal, but it just always
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: irritates me that there are just little language things that
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: I could never ever possibly account for. And like today
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: I wrote it, or this recently I wrote a joke
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: involving putting hard rubbish into a cremation or something. But
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: and then I realized hard rubbish is only a term
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: in Australia, so I've had to.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: This is one that I bring up a lot. And
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: there's a New Zealander you may appreciate this, you'd better
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: appreciate it. On Flight of the Concord, I think one
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: of the first episodes one of the because I fashioned
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: a lot of episodes around their existing songs, but lineing
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: one of those songs, ist going on a date and said,
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: I'll take.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: You for a kebab.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: Yes, but it's set in America, and I mean, you know,
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: we think of a kebab as basically like a sil
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: something like that. Yeah, and they go to the States.
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: Is like, what, so he's taking around for a shob
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: and then you see actually like a shish kabob on
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: the on the screen when they've gone out.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: It's like.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: Not quite the same thing.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: Yeah, so yeah, it's like those Americans have got a
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: different word for.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: I remember when I ordered subway in London once and
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: there was like a fifteen year old girl behind the
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: canna sang sandwich artist and I asked for some capsicum,
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: and like her mind exploded. She was like, I have
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: no have any I was like, okay, you do, it's
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: right there. She's like, no, that's pepper and I was
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: like no, no, no, no, I want capsicum. She's like, that's
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: called pepper. I'm like I call it capsicum. She's like,
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: I don't know what you're saying.
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: And then you said, can I interested in one of
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: these lullies?
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: Get out of my shop, but saying fudgicles? So bart
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Mill has looking for the fudgicles. They find the gun though,
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: in the veggie draw and he's about to shoot the
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: apple not oudam not off of his head, adams his mouth.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Marge catches them, Well, Bud can have a gun. That's home.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: I walks in, and Marge can't believe that you would lie.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: This is the most despicable all the things you've done
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: is the most despicable thing of all. Look much, I
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: swear I never thought you'd find out. It's such a
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: great line. And the delivery from Dan Caslenad is just
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: just as good. And she takes the kids and and
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: then he gets a little gets all out red. Well,
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: this is the thanks I get for protecting my family.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Then go, I'll be fine, turns to Millhouse. Yeah, to
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: cook dinner.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: Hitsley Cupboard gets getting all the ing, all the accessories there.
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: Good on him.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: I feel like Millhouse and Hope probably had a good night,
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Like Millhouse probably is a good cook.
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: The Mill has prepared his own dinner more than once.
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: Yes, said to cook for his dad for sure.
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah. Then at Spinster City apartments, they're going to
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: see Patty and Sol and March. She's the place to stay,
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: but she can't stay because they've got a gentleman caller
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: who's there to fix the TV. But it's just not
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: plumed in.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Poor guy.
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: But she suggested matches a match bookshere of the sleeves,
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: slip Hotael, she'll wake up there once. Seem nice. Then
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: we have the gun warming at the Simpsons house out
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: then the signs out the front Nacho's rifles and alcohol,
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: and Moe is arriving with he ribes first with a
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: bag of irregular oreos. Yeah, and he was wrong with
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: this one, bites it. Oh that's what's wrong. Yes, we
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: don't really get a regular and things like that. We
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: get a regular carrot Yeah yeah, all those carts. But
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: what would be wrong with a regular aureo? Do you
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: think just like crumped up the size of it?
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: Maybe stale?
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: Stale? Yeah, truly a few a few weeks past its
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: best by quite right? Special? Yeah, you have like an
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: q Do you have NQR in New Zealand as well,
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: was that an Australian thing that you discos.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: No, in so in QR sense for not quite right.
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: I'm justing, yeah, they would do a thing where you
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: could get free airples and st No. Yeah, no, we
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: never really had in QR. No, no, no, I was going
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: to say we had like free apples and stuff for kids,
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: but that wasn't I don't think those were the missed
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: up apples and stuff.
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: The big the big chains do that. They'll have to
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: have a banana and apple for the kids, exactly.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: Ipen here, so put that down. That's for children. No,
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: I don't want to lolly. It's for my inner and nourishing.
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: I don't need to go shopping any more on full Actually.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: No, but you know, yeah, we got the NQR stores,
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: which are basically sort of like discontinued brands or close
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: to the close to the US by day, so you know,
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: if you live on the.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Just passed the best before, which is still okay to eat,
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: it's not used buying best before, big difference. But the
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: family they arrive at the Sleep Easy motel, the hookers there,
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: they asked by if you once a good time as
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: you're saying earlier, much like, he's not. He's really not.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: Then most shows have With a few minor adjustments, you
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: can turn a regular gun into five guns setting ovation.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Homan then says, who wants a beer? Opens it up
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: with his gun, And this is where it kicks off,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: where you're just like, oh, wait a minute, these guys
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: aren't gun crazy mainix because they pick characters too, like
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: you know, Mo and things like and Kleatus, And you
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: think all these guys are clearly going to be idiots,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: but no, they're not at all.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Anyone else want a beer?
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: You use your gun as a can opener.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: I use it for everything. Watch me turn on the TV.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: I've never seen such recklessness.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: You might have heard someone.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: Are you so kind of moron? Yeah?
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: But hey yeah, guns aren't toys.
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: They're a family protection, hunting gen d delicious animals, and
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: keeping the King of Angling out of your face.
- 1:31:05Speaker 7: Your membership card please, holmer. I'll also need to remove
- 1:31:11Speaker 7: your tattoo.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: I didn't good one yet.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: Rat By the way, quick, quick little shout out to
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: Homer turning the TV on with his gun. He turns
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: on the TV, someone gets shot in the western falls off. Yes,
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: that's pretty neat, is.
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: Chief Wigan in the n r A because I'm pretty
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: sure isn't there a scene it's in there? Yeah, well
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: where Wigham shoot, doesn't Wigham shoot his TV to turn
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: it off at one point?
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: That's when that's when here's a remote that's the Homer's
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: barbershop quartet, the Beatles one when he gets kicked out
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: of the group and he's angry in bed and there's
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: a Johnny Carson saying things that are irrelevant and it's
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: like Chief Wi.
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: He shoots.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: He shoots the TV and then his wife's like, here's
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: the remote, but they take his membership away and Ma
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: wants to remove the tattoo, but he hasn't got the
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: tattoo yet. Yes, and they send him outside so that
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: they can party. And then meanwhile at the motel, the
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: kids asking they can swim in the pool, but not
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: just yet because there's still get the body out of it.
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: Such a grim again, another thing you can do in
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: a car soroo and then you can't do it a
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: live act.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: Exactly right. Yeah, I love that the TV and the
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Bible were coin operated. Home. Then Bart then does the
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: the new prank call where he asked for three AM
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: week up calls for every room but his own, every
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: room but this, Yes, and of course that would work
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: in the Simpsons universe. And then they're racing the beds,
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: spotty and smelly in March. You just look at the window.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: She's just sad. She's like, why is my husband put
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: me in this situation. Homer is then shooting all the
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: lights in the house. You know this is gonna cost
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: me everything except my precious gun. And then he says
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: he wants his family back because he's just obviously lonely
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: and board at home. No lights are working. Then Bart
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: notices the camera up and the ceiling No, no camera,
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: go back to sleep, and then Lisa is better as
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: making a nauseous because it won't turn off and Marshes
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: will be morning, so just try and get some sleep.
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: And this is where we get the first Quimby moment.
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: He walks in with his mistress. I guess you could
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: call her? Are you panion? Are you planning to say
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: the whole night? Yes? All right, Quimby. And then Homer
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: arrives looking in each room over the door Quimby, and
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: then Marge comes out. He says, there's so many things
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: I want to yell to you. It's come down here,
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: tell me. Okay. So he comes down and he says,
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: you know, I love my gun, but it's lonely being
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: at home by myself and there's no one around him.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: I witty remarks, and he says, I promise the gun
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: is gone for good this time. And he's the line
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: you were mentioning earlier. Finally realized what's the point nevering
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: the gun for protection if you've got no one left
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: to protect? And about to check out, Quimby is getting
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: some ice out of the ice machine in his robe.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: He gives him the Continental Breakfast. Then Snake bursts in
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: to rob the joint and he grabs Quimby. I'm too
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: ridge to die, and but then just love the envelope
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: closes it. Yes, yeah, it's horrible, horrific, just drippling at
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: the sides. So Snake walks in and yes, so he
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: grabs Quimby, and Quimi doesn't want to die, obviously, But
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: Homer pulls out the gun here and you're like, oh shit,
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: you've led again to march and Marge is furious.
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: Marge decides to tell him off mid robbery.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: Mid robbery. Yes, yes, but then he says what a
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: secretly meant was he's too distracted talking to Marge, trying
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: to justify why he still haze the gun. As Snake
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: takes the gun from him, it's like stupid, you know,
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: stupid idiot, I've got them, still give me them. Okay,
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: don't shoot class. That's that is classic.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: That's good.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: Then the NRA crew arrive because they heard the song
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: of alarm that the the clerk pushed because they have
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: one of those scanners. My dad used to have one
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: of those scanners when I was a kid and sitting
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: there and you can hear like the police and what's
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: going on. It's like it felt like you're breaking the law.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: He probably were sure it's not legal. But my dad
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: scanner is like listening's like, oh yeah, there's yeah, this
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: is going down. The cops are going down this road
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: and he's want to go look, and was like the
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: house burning a couple of streets and we're going to look,
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: and I'm like, how do you know the hurt on
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: the scanner and I'm like, this doesn't seem legit. But
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: they heard it on their scanner as well. They heard
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: the song, so they've saved the day. Essentially, so the
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: NRA crew save the day. But did they say the
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: day because there's loads of points out, did anyone's actually
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: stop the robber? Yeah, no, no, we're we're scaring them away.
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: And it's interesting that there's sort of a correlation between
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: these guys who are very big in the guns who
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: also have police scammers as well. I'm not saying anything
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: about your dandy by the way down, but I am
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: I'm employing it. I don't know the fact that they
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: kind of want to be law enforces or being seen
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: on land. Yeah, on the right side of you know,
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: I don't know much to say beyond that because I'm
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: not a philosophy mate to like like like he'd had
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: more to say about it.
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: But can't be lying if I said my men weren't
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: committing crimes.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I lay to you, merch, but this gun
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: had a hold on me. I felt this incredible surge
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: of power, like God must feel when he's holding a gun.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: So please get rid of it, because I know I'll
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: just lie to you again and again.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: He leaves with the kids. Marge goes to put it
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: in the bin and in the normal version of the
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: UK version, the normal version, she goes to put it
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: in the bin, sees herself in the reflection. I think
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: she looks kind of cool, and she walks out to
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: the Avengers thing, which was not the Avengers we know now.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: The Avengers was a TV show in the UK, I.
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: Believe, not the end Game Avengers. We're talking about John
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: Steed and Mpel, the dude in the bowler hat and
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: the woman in the type black cat suit hot stuff
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: in the late sixties, and I have read that they
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: didn't like the music anything that suited the moment at
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: the end.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: They wanted to change it, but it was too late.
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: And I've read they wanted to change it to Happiness
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: is a Warm Gun by the beach, but they couldn't
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: get it all to work in time. It was just
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: it was too late. Notice, but there's a video on
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: YouTube where someone's put Happiness is a Warm Gun in
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: its place and it actually works perfect. It would have
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: been like it would have been spot on. It's just
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: a shame that didn't happen. But yet Happiness is a
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: Warm Gun would have been a brilliant ending to that moment.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: And also I feel like because a lot of people
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: who didn't like this episode thought it made guns look positive, right,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: put them in a more positive like the negative. I
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: think that music at the end makes her come across
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: cooler where when you watch the watch that same ending
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: with happiness as a warm gun, it's more of a
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: bittersweet ending where it's like, you know, it's not oh
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: how cool is she?
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: Yeah, but having the Avengers music, and I mean, the
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: main female character on that TV series was regarded as
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: kind of a feminist icon, a very much kind of
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: a prototype girl hero. I don't know, not to be well,
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: you don't quite get it if you know, but she's Yeah,
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: she's been sucked into the as I said before, the
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: allure of it as well. It's like no one's safe
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: from thinking, damn I look cool holding this, or or
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: I feel very powerful with this.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Oh well that is the end of the cart chain.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: Thank you so much for picking this one, recause it's
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: not when I go back and reviees it all that often.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: But I'm glad I did now.
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: Yes. No, I don't know why. I just watched it
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: many years ago, maybe when I was going through the Simpsons.
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: I just remember it really standing out to me of
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: how funny it was, how many jokes are packed into
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: it is just I think also, you know politics aside.
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: I think a gun is an extreme item. I guess
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: you know guns. You know, if you shoot a gun
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: at someone, you kill them. So I think there's a
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: lot of opportunity for comedy there because you're in such
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: a heightened extreme place. And yeah, the Simpson's milks it
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: for all it's worths.
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: It's so good you're going to treat it carefully as well. Yes,
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: that's what's what I did. A great job.
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Before we let you go, though, Ray, something we
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: always ask our guests. You're already well aware of it.
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: We've let you know, given me the heads up. We
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: ask you about a you're gona put together a TV marathon.
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: He's a Friday night since in Marthon. And now, what
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: was the TV station to add on it? In the
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: you in our New Zealand?
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: You actually got it right. I was very impressed.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I was TV and Z two.
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I was shocked. You knew that? What well?
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: We called you know, we called it channel too, but
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: it was run by TV and Z. I can't believe
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: you knew that two whole channels? Yeah, really, two whole channels.
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: We actually had three. I think I'm trying from memory.
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: The Simpson was on channel was on channel two when
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: I was a kid, and then it shifted to three
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: due to you know, who knows what rights issues and
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: stuff beyond me, but.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: It was it was what your memories are of it
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: being on two?
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: Yes, yes, so yeah, I remember being packaged with friends
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: and okay, yes, and I remember and I remember and
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: they played off Friends and the Simpsons and they did
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: a song to ode to joy anyway anyway, anyway, but yes, yeah,
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: I was trying to pick I I think these are
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: just my five just favorite episodes of the Simpsons. I
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: think again as a kid, maybe not necessarily the most
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: entertaining for me to watch, but the most entertaining for
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: me to watch now. And so yeah, obviously the Cartridge Family,
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: Is okay one of the one which one would which
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: one would you start with? You're going to just pick
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: one to start with? Which would you kick off your
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: five episode marathon with? Oh, Friday night, you got pizza,
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: you got a two leater bottle of to PEPSI.
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: Oh that's good. Then, maybe, oh maybe that does change things.
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: Oh maybe I would still open with the Artridge family
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: because it does kind of cover cover the entire Simpsons family,
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: and it's the one that's most focused on the entire family.
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: I think of the ones I've perked, and then I'd
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: pick Homer at the Bat, which I think is a
- 1:40:15Speaker 4: phenomenal episode. I think, Yeah, mister Burns is maybe my
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: favorite minor major, minor character, you know, maybe of the
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: secondary character character. Yeah.
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: The funny that the cast absolutely hated that episode because
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: they thought they were being written out of it. The
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: Simpson was getting really popular at that point and they
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: thought there was all the lines were going to the
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: guest stars and like do you still want us or not?
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: So the cast, the cast hated it, but us the
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: fans loved it.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: Yes, No, I mean the the baseball players all be
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: taken out one by one and random events is so
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: so funny and gigantism. I told you to shave those
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: side birds of the one of the you guys might
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: remember his name, but the baseball player who keep them
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: to his lines. And then the reason that he gets
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: taken out is that he's been too heroic, you know,
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: like he runs into the fire and the lady says,
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: my washer.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: And dryer or whatever runs keep going back in.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: But yeah, he was originally taken out by something else,
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: but he didn't like the way he was portrayed and demanded.
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: Him The name escapes me. But I know exactly. So
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: he didn't die. He was just late because he were
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: saving somebody.
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: Yes, made him too much of a hero. And then
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: apparently for the rest of his life people would ask
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: him about that episode and edwards because he just hated
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: the Simpsons.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: What's like Spruce Spreingsteen. He turned down Radio Bart. That's
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: why Sting is in now where he falls down the well, Yeah,
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: want to he said, No, he's still to this day, like,
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: why do you do the Simpsons? Like, stop asking me
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: about the Simpsons.
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: So yeah, and then Burns Baby Burns another one again.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: These are just the only episodes that I think just
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: make me laugh so much. Yeah. I think Rodney Dangerfield
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: in this episode is so strong. There's so so many
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: good gigs. The one where when they insult Marge and
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: the basement and then Rodney goes, oh, no, give it
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: up to your mother. She's all right, And she's all right.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: Marge doesn't quite know how to react.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: My kids absolutely loved Homer being forced outside to because
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: I was like, we can't go out there police in
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: broad daylight. And then he goes outside, gets caught going
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: outside when police aman in broad daylight. One idiocy. My
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: kid's not hilarious, but you god, you're the biggest. Your
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: favorite moment is there? Put it back in She's not.
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: Little line. Also when they drive past, they drive past
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: Larry Burns at first and he's holding a sign that
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: says Springfield, I kind of get a poll to hold
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: that song. So many just really strong.
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: Jokes, great character designed too, because he looks like mister Burns,
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: but it also looks like Rodney danger Is.
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: They somehow do it? They so how do it? Both?
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: And there's a bit where when mister Burns shows them
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: the playroom, which is the room with the theater production
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: running in it, but they walked over to it and
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: Rodney Dangerfield he's like he's doing the hunched warp with
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: his hands up like mister Burns.
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: Again he says, hey, no, you are right.
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: So yeah, just the little bits of stand up comedy
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: and there very funny. And the final one, well two
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: more sorry one is Summer of four? Is it foot
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: two or feet two. I actually pot four foot four
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: foot two. I think that one. I mean, the making
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: fun of Millhouse will always crackt me up, I think.
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: And it just has one of my favorite favorite moments
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: in the show, which is one of the one of
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: the girls, one of Lisa's new friends, says, Lisa, your
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: mom is so cool. If it was my mum should
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: be interrupted coming in right now with rice, Chrispy swears
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: and orange and Marge comes in with that stuff. Here's
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: it walks right out and that makes me laugh so
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: so so.
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: It's just like Grandpa when he walks into the lescout Seas, but.
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: The flipping it's so funny. Yeah. And then the final
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: one I pick is a Millhouse Divided. I think, yeah,
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: when Kirk and Lawan get divorced, I think, just yeah,
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: Kirk van Howden is just a very funny said.
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: That was the birth of Kirk. Really, it really was. Yeah,
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: And what I liked about that one in particular was
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: that the end doesn't give you the happy ending, It
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: gives you the realistic why the funk would she take it?
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: She doesn't want this guy. And at most shows, the
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: hit sing a song and you're like, you know, what.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Chase. I know you're a gladiator and you're
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: a great husband or a great new partner, but I'm
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: gonna go back to my old shitty husband. And it's no,
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: that's not that's not what would really happen. And she's
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: just like you no, But yeah, Kirk became a main
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: character after he was always like on the show. But
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: that's where he became the Kirk that we know and
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: love now.
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah. And there's just so many strong, strong
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: lines like the like the so that's it, you know,
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: the when he hits five from the crack effectory who says,
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: you know, do single people heat crackers? We don't know. Frankly,
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: we don't want to know.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: It's the market we can do without. That's also the
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: I don't recall anying good luck, it's.
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: Goodbye and good luck of phenomenal.
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: Just yeah, now that I'm being married for ten years now,
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: But like watching that one, when you're married, it hits
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: it differently, even be in a relationship. It's like trying
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: to do in games nights with your wife. Just don't
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: do it.
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: Don't do it.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: Don't want to show the cat because the cat's going
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: to get it.
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: So good, that's so good, And is that the one
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: at the end and Homer goes, yeah, Homie goes, I
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: want to renew her vows or whatever. Margin is like, oh,
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: we don't have to do that. He goes, Yes, we do,
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: because I've we've done to the class.
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: Good device this afternoon.
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: That's a beautiful, misjudged romantic.
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: Yes, that's a great marathon.
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, oh thank you. Yeah. Are those I think
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: are just some of the episodes, but yeah, there, I
- 1:46:20Speaker 4: mean the Simpsons. I mean that this podcast could go
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: on for hours and hours. I we just sat here
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: and relayed our favorite lines. Like I was even thinking
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: about the one where they recount is it how Lisa
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: Lisa is born and or Maggie is born and Homer
- 1:46:35Speaker 4: is leaving the bowling Bowling Alley and I remember all
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: the different people are complimenting him, and he just thinks
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: it's about his promotion, and I think mostly is a
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: home away to go on getting Marge pricked. All these
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: compliments are becoming more abstract.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: I do love the bol that's that's Maggie. That has
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: my favorite ending of all time become a big soppy
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: it's that it for her?
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: Yes, that's absolutely phenomenal, ended so sweet.
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: Yes, all right, well, thank you so much, Ray for
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: joining you today. It's been a pleasure to have you
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: on the show.
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you so much for having me and
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: for getting to discuss my favorite episode of the Simpsons.
- 1:47:15Speaker 4: Thank you, yes much.
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: Indeed. Now before you go, though, let's of course plug
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: those two dates once again. I'll put on the description.

- 1:47:21Speaker 2: podcast obviously. But hit in the UK next year again, yes,
