- 0:52Speaker 2: some LSD.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Hi, Catherine.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Hi, Chelsea.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It looks like you're back in L.A. Oh, my God.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We had a crazy, crazy, fun-filled weekend with nieces and
- 1:02Speaker 2: so many people in so many different cities.
- 1:04Speaker 1: We had so much fun in Atlanta. And then I
- 1:06Speaker 1: did a talk at the Carter Center.
- 1:08Speaker 2: If you guys, if anyone listening lives in Georgia or
- 1:11Speaker 2: near the Carter Center, you need to go there and, like,
- 1:13Speaker 2: hang out there. They're doing wonderful things for mental health,
- 1:16Speaker 2: for disease prevention. It's a nonpartisan organization that my niece, Charlie,
- 1:22Speaker 2: interned at. And so then I became friends with the
- 1:25Speaker 2: woman who gave her her intern and I did a
- 1:27Speaker 2: talk for them on my mental health journey because we,
- 1:30Speaker 2: or saga, that's what we decided we're going to call
- 1:32Speaker 2: it instead of a journey. And then I went out
- 1:35Speaker 2: with Charlie and her boyfriend and all of her friends
- 1:37Speaker 2: and they all came to the show and everyone from
- 1:39Speaker 2: the Carter Center came.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So that was really fun.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Then we went to Baltimore this weekend and then we had,
- 1:44Speaker 2: we went to Saginaw.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That was a really fun show in Saginaw.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And then this weekend we have Pittsburgh and Toronto, which
- 1:51Speaker 2: I think is, Yeah, Toronto should be about sold out.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Pittsburgh still has tickets. And where are we? Oh, Waukegan,
- 1:58Speaker 1: Illinois on Friday night. No, Thursday night. We're at Waukegan, Illinois.
- 2:03Speaker 2: This is my follow up to my Chicago theater show
- 2:05Speaker 2: because I didn't add one on the same night. So
- 2:07Speaker 2: I had to come back around and then whatever. But
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm coming to Waukegan Thursday night. People get your tickets.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'll be there.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And we're having the time of our life. This is
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yamanika's last weekend on tour, you guys, with me. So,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, we're going to have to do some serious
- 2:19Speaker 2: high and mighty. Today's guest is awesome. One of my
- 2:24Speaker 2: favorite actresses of all time. I love her so much.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I used to wait tables in a restaurant that she
- 2:30Speaker 2: would come in all the time when I moved to L.A.,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but I never got to wait on her table because Colleen,
- 2:36Speaker 2: my very first roommate, who I refer to as Camel Toe, no,
- 2:40Speaker 2: Dum Dum in my first book.
- 2:42Speaker 1: She would only wait on Keri Russell. Did we have.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Colleen on the show like way back in season one?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we did. I think we did.
- 2:52Speaker 2: But she was obsessed with Felicity and Keri was on
- 2:55Speaker 2: Felicity at that time and she was dating Scott Speedman
- 2:57Speaker 2: and they would come into Terry's where we worked, a
- 3:00Speaker 2: restaurant that's no longer there.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So I never got to meet her. And I just,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I think This is the first time I've met her.
- 3:05Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But I've communicated with her a little bit. So, yes,
- 3:08Speaker 2: that's our guest today, Keri Russell, for season four of
- 3:11Speaker 2: The Diplomat.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Which is out next week on Netflix.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Exciting. That's a great show. Look at how
- 3:18Speaker 1: cute you are. Oh, my God. I just ran because
- 3:20Speaker 1: I was like, just motherfucker. The U.N. is fine.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Are you pleased that you're coming from the U.N.? No,
- 3:25Speaker 4: but like the whole city is, I wish.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But no. Do you wish?
- 3:29Speaker 5: No, I don't wish that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Here, put your headphones on. When you're ready. When you're ready.
- 3:34Speaker 6: You do.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Do I have to put headphones on? You can put
- 3:36Speaker 1: one on. Can I put one on? Yeah. That's what
- 3:38Speaker 1: the kids do now. Because it makes me self-conscious. Does it?
- 3:42Speaker 1: It does. I don't like to hear my own voice.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Oh.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Isn't that weird? I love learning. First of all, I
- 3:47Speaker 1: don't know anything about you. Well, here we go. So
- 3:50Speaker 1: here we go. And I have something for you, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: I forgot it. I also have something for you. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: have something for you.
- 3:58Speaker 4: And I forgot it, but I'm going to get it
- 3:59Speaker 4: to you.
- 3:59Speaker 1: How long are you in town for? Till Friday, Saturday morning. No,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm here all weekend. I'm actually staying here all weekend.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I'll get it to you.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You'll get it. I'll get it. This is Catherine, my producer.
- 4:08Speaker 1: She's on the show too.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Hey, Catherine.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Hi. Oh, now it's good that I have this so
- 4:11Speaker 1: I can hear Catherine. Yeah, yeah. So you can hear Catherine.
- 4:13Speaker 5: It's for me.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That's primarily what it's for. Hey, Catherine. Hi.
- 4:16Speaker 2: The reason I don't know anything about you is because
- 4:19Speaker 2: no one really knows.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Anything about you. Success. Yes, yes. You are the opposite
- 4:24Speaker 1: of me. You are able to have a very public, well,
- 4:32Speaker 1: what are we calling it? A bibliography? You have a
- 4:36Speaker 1: very public record of work.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Let's call it that, okay? And your private life, one
- 4:42Speaker 2: of the reasons I really admire you, even though I
- 4:44Speaker 2: barely know you, is because you manage to keep your
- 4:48Speaker 2: private life very private.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And you do. You do a very good job of it.
- 4:53Speaker 5: So do you. Well, no, no, no, no. Your private life?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Everything is out in the open with me. It's just
- 4:58Speaker 2: like I may as well be nude all the time.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Because that's basically what's happened. That sounds great.
- 5:04Speaker 2: So I like that. I like that you've been able
- 5:06Speaker 2: to do that. Because you have been in the public
- 5:08Speaker 2: eye since you were a little kid.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I have, yeah. And it's pretty incredible. And I want
- 5:12Speaker 1: to know how you managed.
- 5:14Speaker 5: To do that.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Incredible or creepy?
- 5:16Speaker 2: No, it's not creepy. There's nothing creepy about you. I
- 5:19Speaker 2: don't want to embarrass you because I have a feeling
- 5:21Speaker 2: you don't love compliments. But there is something... so extremely
- 5:25Speaker 2: likable about you and affable about you. People are drawn
- 5:29Speaker 2: to you and I'm sure you realize that.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But I think part of the allure is that you
- 5:36Speaker 1: are able to maintain like a grounded, you're very normal.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I've met you before, I've seen you at events and, and,
- 5:43Speaker 2: and you kind of have a public life, but you
- 5:45Speaker 2: do remain private. So I want to know how you
- 5:48Speaker 2: manage that or, and if it's intentional or Or if
- 5:51Speaker 2: it's just.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It is intentional. I mean, I don't have, like, social media.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You're right. That's a good one.
- 5:56Speaker 4: But I'm an actress, so people don't have to know
- 5:59Speaker 4: everything about me. And actually, I think it's better if
- 6:03Speaker 4: people don't know things about me.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Do you know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely. Like, I think....
- 6:09Speaker 4: Being an actress or an actor, I don't want to
- 6:11Speaker 4: know everything about them. I want to not know about
- 6:14Speaker 4: them so that I can believe that they're doing that thing.
- 6:17Speaker 4: When I know everything about somebody and then they're trying
- 6:21Speaker 4: to be this person, I'm like, they're not that person.
- 6:24Speaker 4: They make $ 8 million and they're the skincare person.
- 6:29Speaker 1: They're going to pay.
- 6:30Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yes. I want people to.
- 6:34Speaker 4: When I watch a movie or something, I want to
- 6:36Speaker 4: disappear into that story. I don't want to be thinking
- 6:39Speaker 4: of what I saw them just like selling me.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm trying to say? Absolutely. But also,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I'm bored with myself. People get bored with me. Of course.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Like I want to disappear and then come back when
- 6:51Speaker 4: I have to and then disappear.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yes. And my real life, you know, my best pals, they're–
- 6:59Speaker 1: They're not famous. You know what I mean? We just
- 7:01Speaker 1: all do our own thing.
- 7:03Speaker 2: How does one meet non-famous people when you've spent your
- 7:06Speaker 2: whole life being famous?
- 7:07Speaker 1: That feels like a special website.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there's an online dating service for it. Real people.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Real people of Brooklyn. Realpeople.com. Yeah, it's for famous people
- 7:20Speaker 1: to meet real people.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Famous people looking for non-famous friends. Looking for school teachers
- 7:27Speaker 2: or accountants or, yeah.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You know, they're like, I don't know, they're coders. One
- 7:33Speaker 1: friend's a coder. One friend is a journalist. They all
- 7:38Speaker 1: do all, Sorts of stuff. And so I met some
- 7:41Speaker 1: of them through school, like my kids' school. Yeah, that's
- 7:44Speaker 1: what I was going to ask.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You know, you're like in first grade and you see
- 7:47Speaker 4: the moms that are like also wearing Vans and like
- 7:50Speaker 4: not wearing like have Chanel bags.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And you're like, oh, the Vans mom. That's my people. Yeah, right.
- 7:56Speaker 1: That looks like she hasn't brushed her teeth yet.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Like, who are you?
- 8:00Speaker 2: You know? And at what point in your career do
- 8:02Speaker 2: you think that you realized how like important that was?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Well.
- 8:08Speaker 4: The creepy part is that I've been doing this since
- 8:10Speaker 4: I was 15. I was a dancer. That is slightly creepy.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It is slightly.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Any child actor doing it, that world is creepy. I mean,
- 8:17Speaker 4: thank God, like, I wasn't molested along the way.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Like, for real. Yeah. But... Were your parents stage parents? No.
- 8:26Speaker 1: My parents knew nothing about anything. And in fact.
- 8:31Speaker 4: When I had to sign the contract for the Disney
- 8:34Speaker 4: overall deal- Your first non-disclosure agreement? For real, at like 15.
- 8:38Speaker 4: My parents knew nothing about any of this. I just
- 8:41Speaker 4: went with all my dance friends to the audition, happened
- 8:43Speaker 4: to get it. And I remember signing the contract and
- 8:50Speaker 4: my dad, who was just like a regular, you know, whatever,
- 8:53Speaker 4: neither of my parents went to college. And my dad
- 8:56Speaker 4: was like, Because they sign you for like multiple years.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Granted, it wasn't even enough money to pay for my
- 9:02Speaker 4: apartment while I was working on the show. Like they
- 9:05Speaker 4: just expect your parents to supplement it, I guess. But
- 9:08Speaker 4: I remember my dad looking at it and going, wow,
- 9:10Speaker 4: if she does this for like three years, she'll make
- 9:14Speaker 4: more money than I do.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And it was wild.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It was just like a wild thing. And it was
- 9:20Speaker 2: just your initiative? You were so interested in pursuing this?
- 9:23Speaker 1: I think I was just.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Like I didn't grow up going, oh my God, I
- 9:27Speaker 4: want to be an actress. I think it was just
- 9:30Speaker 4: what my friends were doing and it was just a
- 9:31Speaker 4: natural progression.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And then I just didn't leave.
- 9:36Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 9:36Speaker 1: I was like, well, what else am I going to do?
- 9:38Speaker 4: I graduated school a little bit early because when you're
- 9:41Speaker 4: on that show, we all had tutors. So there were
- 9:43Speaker 4: 19 of us teenagers and you could do the schoolwork
- 9:47Speaker 4: as quickly as you could get it done. And so
- 9:49Speaker 4: you could graduate early if you wanted to. I mean,
- 9:51Speaker 4: not like miles early. I'm not I'm not a genius
- 9:54Speaker 4: but like I'll be the judge and um and so
- 9:58Speaker 4: we I got to graduate a little bit early and
- 10:01Speaker 4: then I was like well what am I gonna do
- 10:03Speaker 4: now and I was like I guess I moved to
- 10:05Speaker 4: LA where everyone else is moving and so like at
- 10:07Speaker 4: 17 moved to LA by yourself slept on someone's couch
- 10:11Speaker 4: you didn't go to the Oakwoods Thank God.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That probably saved me from the molester vibe.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I think that actually there is a direct link between
- 10:18Speaker 2: the Oakwoods and complete destruction of your life.
- 10:21Speaker 4: A thousand percent. So, no, I slept on these two girls'
- 10:25Speaker 4: couch that were older than me.
- 10:26Speaker 1: How did you meet these girls?
- 10:28Speaker 4: One was a producer's assistant on the Mickey Mouse Club.
- 10:31Speaker 4: And her sister was a model. And I literally slept
- 10:34Speaker 4: on the couch for months.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:37Speaker 4: And just like went to really lame auditions, like commercial auditions.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Wow.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think I did a guest star on Boy Meets World. Yes,
- 10:46Speaker 1: I'm familiar.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I had hair like Chaka Khan hair.
- 10:50Speaker 1: We know what kind of hair you had, sister.
- 10:51Speaker 2: There's a very public record of your hair.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You can't get away from your hair.
- 10:56Speaker 3: No, I can't.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm waiting for you to shave your head. The hair
- 11:00Speaker 1: was out of this world. It was amazing. It's funny
- 11:03Speaker 1: that you always have your hair straight now. Well, it's
- 11:06Speaker 1: a fro again.
- 11:06Speaker 5: It's a fro again.
- 11:07Speaker 4: In fact, I usually do like a keratin or something
- 11:10Speaker 4: to kind of mellow it out.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Mellow it out, yeah. And this summer, I was like,
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's going wild again. And I went wild. But it's cute.
- 11:17Speaker 2: This is the thing about you that I also love
- 11:20Speaker 2: is you have such a little girl physicality about you
- 11:24Speaker 2: that you'll never be old.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't feel old.
- 11:28Speaker 2: No.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Do you feel old? Well, I don't know. Are we
- 11:30Speaker 1: the same age? Are you 50? Yeah. I'm 51. I
- 11:33Speaker 1: just turned 51. February.
- 11:34Speaker 6: Oh, okay.
- 11:34Speaker 5: I'm March.
- 11:35Speaker 6: March.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Are you a Pisces? I'm an Aries. Okay. Okay. I
- 11:40Speaker 1: don't know anything about it. I know.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I love when people ask signs and then you tell
- 11:44Speaker 2: them and they don't know about your sign.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But I love it. I love reading all that shit.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I do love it too. I love it.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I'm like the full moon and the equinox. I'm like,
- 11:53Speaker 4: oh my gosh.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I was just texting my friend. I was like, I
- 11:56Speaker 2: read about you. Okay, so this is about... They're like, what? Well,
- 11:59Speaker 2: what about this last lunar eclipse that we had? Or
- 12:01Speaker 2: was it a solar eclipse? Well, there were two.
- 12:03Speaker 1: It was back to back. Are we talking about the
- 12:06Speaker 1: lion's portal? Yes, the portal. When I texted you about... Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 12:11Speaker 1: The portal.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Portal.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm a Pisces. So it was
- 12:15Speaker 1: all over my algorithm. It was like.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Oh my God, you have to step in. You have
- 12:19Speaker 2: 72 hours to get into this window. And if you
- 12:22Speaker 2: miss the window, if you're not conscious of it, you're
- 12:25Speaker 2: going to, you, you'll be stuck in your last 12
- 12:28Speaker 2: year cycle. Fuck.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I got to get, I got to lock in. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: I was like, fuck, I got to get in this
- 12:32Speaker 1: new 12 year cycle. And I was like, I'm conscious.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm conscious. I want in. And then I went to
- 12:37Speaker 1: Mallorca with a bunch of girlfriends.
- 12:39Speaker 2: You did?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah. So we were having like parallel experiences. Parallel experiences.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, listen, I want to like
- 12:44Speaker 1: land this right, you know?
- 12:46Speaker 2: And it kept saying for Pisces, it was even more important,
- 12:50Speaker 2: this kind of portal.
- 12:52Speaker 1: And then I stepped through and I'm like, when is
- 12:54Speaker 1: the portal closed? Because I want to be done with this.
- 12:56Speaker 6: Right.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And 72 hours went by and then there was another portal.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Wow.
- 13:00Speaker 2: That I had to step through. And then before I
- 13:01Speaker 2: knew it, there was another lunar eclipse.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You're like, what's going on? You're like, yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 1: So it was a lot of my time. It was
- 13:07Speaker 1: like a pyramid scheme. And it happened on August 12th.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I remember this. And I was like very, yeah. One
- 13:14Speaker 2: was on the 8th, though, because it was like 8, 8.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes.
- 13:17Speaker 2: It kept happening over and over again. And I felt
- 13:21Speaker 2: very positive about it. And I was just trying to
- 13:23Speaker 2: interact with the sun and the moon as much as
- 13:25Speaker 2: possible so that they know that I'm on their team.
- 13:28Speaker 2: You know?
- 13:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And then we had this woman wake us up at
- 13:31Speaker 2: 4.30 in the morning to go on this hike in Mallorca,
- 13:35Speaker 2: Spain to see the sunset.
- 13:36Speaker 1: You did that?
- 13:37Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I did.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Because I was like, I'm stepping into the right portal.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And I was putting my best foot forward. And we
- 13:43Speaker 2: get up at 4.30 in the morning in the dark.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I corralled like three of my girlfriends agreed to do
- 13:48Speaker 2: it with me. We hike for an hour in the dark.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Then we scale a mountain.
- 13:54Speaker 1: We don't know this. We thought it was a light walk.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And before you know it, you're holding on to like
- 13:58Speaker 2: tree branches, hiking up like- Scrambling. Yes.
- 14:01Speaker 1: To the top of this promontory, this top of this mountain. Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And then it was too foggy to see the sun
- 14:06Speaker 2: come up. So that was my experience.
- 14:09Speaker 5: That is so fucking good.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Incredible. Fucking losers. That's actually amazing. I know. And the
- 14:15Speaker 1: woman who took us, she's like, oh, Chelsea. She has
- 14:17Speaker 1: this little accent.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And I'm not very good at accents, so I won't
- 14:20Speaker 2: tell you where she's from and you can just pretend.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I know, we need Matthew to do this for us. Oh, yeah. See,
- 14:24Speaker 1: Matthew has a great accent.
- 14:25Speaker 5: You can do fucking any accent.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And so, yeah, so that was kind of a waste,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I guess. Well, no, it wasn't a waste. No, it
- 14:30Speaker 1: wasn't a waste. You were with your pals. You were
- 14:32Speaker 1: doing it. No, no, no. It wasn't a waste. I
- 14:33Speaker 1: like the way you use the word pals. I never
- 14:36Speaker 1: use that word.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 1: They're my total pals. That's cute.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Yep.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Um, okay. So you moved to LA and then you
- 14:43Speaker 1: did a bunch of stuff, right? Like crappy stuff.
- 14:45Speaker 4: And then Felicity happened. And then Felicity happened. And I
- 14:47Speaker 4: felt like that was my first real job. Like I
- 14:49Speaker 4: was like, oh, this writing is good. This is what I, oh,
- 14:53Speaker 4: this is, I, the, the biggest clue in for me
- 14:56Speaker 4: was standing, you know, for network stuff, they make you
- 14:59Speaker 4: test like 8,000 times with 3000 girls. And, um, I
- 15:04Speaker 4: was testing at the final test of the tests and
- 15:07Speaker 4: there were like six of us. And we all, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 4: the way they do it in network TV, like there's
- 15:13Speaker 4: a blonde girl, there's a brown-haired girl, there's an Asian girl,
- 15:16Speaker 4: there's a Puerto Rican girl.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And I was, whatever, the curly-haired girl.
- 15:22Speaker 4: And we were all standing up there and someone was saying, oh,
- 15:26Speaker 4: it's such good writing and the story, it's so sad.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And I was like, uh-uh, I think it's funny. Am
- 15:33Speaker 1: I missing something?
- 15:35Speaker 4: I was like, I just kind of zipped my lips
- 15:36Speaker 4: and was like, yeah, sad.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And I just remember thinking it was so funny. And
- 15:43Speaker 1: it was funny. But that was JJ's writing.
- 15:46Speaker 4: And I think that's the first time I was like, oh,
- 15:49Speaker 4: you're supposed to pay attention to the good writing.
- 15:51Speaker 1: That's what matters. And I still do that. I don't care.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I mean, you should care about who's directing. But to me,
- 15:59Speaker 4: I just want it to read like a good book.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I want it to be like that quality.
- 16:03Speaker 1: What was the last good book you've read?
- 16:05Speaker 4: Ooh, ooh.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I read that Barbara Kingsolver, that really big one. What
- 16:10Speaker 1: was it called? The Demon Copperhead. Yes, Demon Copperhead.
- 16:13Speaker 6: You know what?
- 16:13Speaker 1: I started that book and I never finished it. Oh,
- 16:15Speaker 1: it's so good. Is it? But it's intense.
- 16:17Speaker 7: It's really.
- 16:18Speaker 2: When there's a trailer park involved, maybe it's because I...
- 16:22Speaker 2: I didn't grow up like that, but when there's trailer parks,
- 16:25Speaker 2: I find that very.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's intense.
- 16:29Speaker 6: I know.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I'm going to read it. I have to because it's everyone's...
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's so many people's favorite book. It's epic.
- 16:34Speaker 5: It's not my favorite.
- 16:35Speaker 4: It's just epic and it's such an interesting version of
- 16:40Speaker 4: that story that a lot of people have tried to tell.
- 16:42Speaker 1: And it's a really beautiful....
- 16:45Speaker 4: Dense, poetic version of the opioid epidemic. And she really
- 16:49Speaker 4: tells it right and with a lot of grace. But
- 16:52Speaker 4: what was the last book I read?
- 16:54Speaker 1: Fuck, I should know this. been bad about reading recently.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I have a ton of great books to recommend you.
- 16:58Speaker 1: What did you read? Correspondent is great. That's the last
- 17:01Speaker 1: one I read. And I loved it. And it was
- 17:04Speaker 1: so full of dignity. It was so sweet. Dignified. Dignified.
- 17:08Speaker 1: That's a great word for it. It felt old-fashioned in
- 17:11Speaker 1: some way.
- 17:12Speaker 4: And after all the shitstorm we've been dealing with, I
- 17:16Speaker 4: just felt so lovely and decent.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It felt decent.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Right.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Whistler by Ann Patchett is a great one. I have
- 17:22Speaker 1: not read that. And do you know Lily King. Do
- 17:25Speaker 1: you know Lily King?
- 17:26Speaker 4: No, no.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Father of the Rain, Writers and Lovers.
- 17:28Speaker 4: No.
- 17:29Speaker 1: She has like seven books. You've got to get into her.
- 17:30Speaker 1: You're going to like it.
- 17:31Speaker 5: Okay, great.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I promise. Yeah, I need it. Okay, so back to Felicity.
- 17:39Speaker 1: During this time in your life, sidebar. Sidebar.
- 17:42Speaker 2: During this time in your life, I don't know if
- 17:44Speaker 2: you remember coming into what was the deli called in
- 17:47Speaker 2: the Pacific Palisades?
- 17:48Speaker 1: I worked there. Terry's. Terry's.
- 17:52Speaker 6: Terry's.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Terry's. I was a server there. I can't believe you
- 17:55Speaker 1: were a server there. Was I rude to you? No,
- 17:58Speaker 1: of course not. You're like that little bitch.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I would like to see you be rude to someone
- 18:02Speaker 2: in a restaurant.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I never served you or waited on you because.
- 18:08Speaker 2: My roommate, whose name was Colleen, was obsessed with you.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And you were dating, I think, Scott Speedman at the time.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Yeah, of course.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Of course you were. I want to date him now.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's the best. I saw him a couple of
- 18:20Speaker 2: weeks ago and I was like, is he single?
- 18:21Speaker 1: They're like, no. Oh my God, forget it. He finally
- 18:24Speaker 1: shacked up. But gosh, he's just the best. Oh, so cute.
- 18:27Speaker 1: So cute.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So you guys used to come in all the time
- 18:29Speaker 2: and she- Oh my God. And JJ used to come
- 18:33Speaker 2: in all the time with Katie.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And Katie, yep. And their three kids. And you guys
- 18:36Speaker 1: were all great. Including Gracie Abrams. Yes, including Gracie Abrams, yes.
- 18:40Speaker 2: But she was the only person allowed to go and
- 18:44Speaker 2: wait on you because.
- 18:45Speaker 1: She loved you so much.
- 18:46Speaker 2: And I think JJ gave her a part on your
- 18:49Speaker 2: show at some point.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I'm sure.
- 18:51Speaker 1: That was really sweet. And now Terry's is no more.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I know. I know. I know. That's such a bummer.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I know. I know. I guess you left just in time. Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 1: So back to Felicity. So everything happens. Everything blows up
- 19:03Speaker 1: for you, right?
- 19:05Speaker 2: You're in a world probably that you didn't even maybe imagine.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Thank God there was no, you know, like internet or
- 19:15Speaker 4: like those like photos and that kind of shit because
- 19:18Speaker 4: we all did such stupid stuff. And like the kids
- 19:22Speaker 4: now having their– Well, they're taking pictures of themselves, so
- 19:24Speaker 4: I don't know. But, you know, we didn't have that
- 19:28Speaker 4: amount of criticism or, you know, like people weren't watching
- 19:35Speaker 4: my every move. They weren't recording my every lame 20-year-old
- 19:38Speaker 4: statement that I think must be really hard. But yes,
- 19:41Speaker 4: it was a lot of public facing things and I
- 19:46Speaker 4: definitely retreated after that so I finished Felicity I had
- 19:52Speaker 4: I was like the only one of all those kids
- 19:53Speaker 4: on that show who didn't buy a big house I
- 19:56Speaker 4: drove my pickup truck and I took my money and
- 20:01Speaker 4: I bought I rented a sick apartment in New York
- 20:05Speaker 4: in the village and I brought like two giant boxes
- 20:08Speaker 4: of books and And I moved there because I had
- 20:10Speaker 4: two really good girlfriends, and it totally saved me.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Oh, see, you're so cool. It totally saved me.
- 20:16Speaker 4: And I just spent a whole year where I– no,
- 20:18Speaker 4: two years where I didn't work. I was like, I
- 20:20Speaker 4: don't want to do this anymore. This is like taxing.
- 20:22Speaker 4: I'm not like the person I want to be. I'm
- 20:24Speaker 4: like longing for friends. And, you know, we were working–
- 20:30Speaker 4: I think sometimes people– boo-hoo, like.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's hard to be an actor. Like, yeah, I don't
- 20:35Speaker 1: mean to do that.
- 20:36Speaker 4: But, you know, I was 21 showing up places, like,
- 20:39Speaker 4: you show up for work at 5.30 in the morning. It's, like,
- 20:43Speaker 4: an amount of discipline that I'm grateful for, but it's
- 20:46Speaker 4: a lot.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Like, all those years of 20s, I.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Was working, like, you know, 16, 18 hours a day,
- 20:53Speaker 4: five days a week for nine months a year.
- 20:55Speaker 1: So then I just didn't want to do that anymore.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I wanted to, like, be a kid. And What did
- 21:00Speaker 1: you do in your downtime for those two years? Oh,
- 21:03Speaker 1: my God.
- 21:04Speaker 4: I went to every fucking birthday party. I got drunk
- 21:08Speaker 4: with my girlfriends. We danced all night. I walked drunk
- 21:11Speaker 4: home in the snow. I made out with strangers. I
- 21:15Speaker 4: fucking lived that life.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And it was so fun.
- 21:18Speaker 4: We.
- 21:20Speaker 4: It was the time of like when The Bachelorette first
- 21:23Speaker 4: came out and we would order bad Chinese and like
- 21:27Speaker 4: watch The Bachelorette. And it was just so– I remember
- 21:31Speaker 4: my girlfriend, Lindsay, was renting a room with these lovely
- 21:36Speaker 4: older people on the Upper East Side. They would leave
- 21:38Speaker 4: to Florida and we would just all watch The Bachelorette
- 21:41Speaker 4: in their apartment.
- 21:42Speaker 1: It was just the best. Like way up in the
- 21:44Speaker 1: 90s in York, you know. It was just– It was
- 21:47Speaker 1: so fun.
- 21:48Speaker 4: And just I got to do those things that I
- 21:50Speaker 4: missed for that decade. And it really, it let me,
- 21:55Speaker 4: and it was actually Speedman like two years later who
- 21:58Speaker 4: was like, hey, you said you were going to take
- 22:00Speaker 4: a year off work.
- 22:02Speaker 1: It's been like a year and a half. And I
- 22:03Speaker 1: was like, has it?
- 22:04Speaker 4: And he's like, get back, you know, like figure it out.
- 22:07Speaker 4: And I was like, what are you going to do?
- 22:08Speaker 4: And I was like, I don't know. I guess I
- 22:10Speaker 4: have to make money at some point. And so then
- 22:13Speaker 4: I slowly started inching my way back.
- 22:15Speaker 1: And what did you think, like, how did you approach
- 22:16Speaker 1: that for yourself?
- 22:17Speaker 2: Like, what were you thinking? Like, did you say, I just,
- 22:20Speaker 2: I'm looking for a project? Or did you say, I
- 22:22Speaker 2: want to do little things?
- 22:23Speaker 4: Because I said, there was a part that came up
- 22:28Speaker 4: that was a little independent movie that Mike Binder was doing.
- 22:31Speaker 1: You probably know him from The World. Not Waitress.
- 22:34Speaker 4: It was called, it was with Joan Allen, and it
- 22:37Speaker 4: was called The Upside of Anger.
- 22:39Speaker 6: Oh, right.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Kevin Costner was in it. And I was just one
- 22:42Speaker 1: of the sisters there. And I was like, you know what?
- 22:44Speaker 1: I can try that.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Let me see what that feels like to just be
- 22:48Speaker 4: not the one in every day, all day. Let me
- 22:50Speaker 4: just be one of the smaller parts. And really watching
- 22:55Speaker 4: Joan Allen help me because she's just such a class act.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I was like, she's really good. She's normal. You know
- 23:01Speaker 1: what I mean? She's not fucked up.
- 23:03Speaker 4: And I was like, she's doing it okay. And so
- 23:06Speaker 4: she was a really good example for me.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I think that's one of the things that I always
- 23:10Speaker 2: recognize when you meet people that are able to balance
- 23:13Speaker 2: both things and remain normal. It's always something that stands out,
- 23:17Speaker 2: somebody who's not affected, somebody who doesn't walk around with
- 23:20Speaker 2: an entourage.
- 23:21Speaker 1: That doesn't have to.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Have all these requirements that can just be a real person. Well,
- 23:26Speaker 2: that is always an example to me because I always
- 23:28Speaker 2: want to be a real person.
- 23:29Speaker 7: You know what I mean?
- 23:30Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 23:31Speaker 2: And it doesn't matter like, you know, how often your
- 23:34Speaker 2: name is publicly mentioned or how like that stuff is like,
- 23:39Speaker 2: I don't say it's not real because it's part of
- 23:41Speaker 2: our reality, but being a public person.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But also just to manage that and remaining sane.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Like you don't have to be crazy and you don't
- 23:50Speaker 2: have to act like that it's something more than it is.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Well, and also for me, and it feels like with,
- 23:55Speaker 4: for you, cause you have this strong sense of being
- 23:59Speaker 4: with the people sort of, and like what it feels like, like,
- 24:03Speaker 4: it sounds really like people are going to.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Like be barfing in their mouth.
- 24:06Speaker 4: But like the human experience, what it feels like to
- 24:08Speaker 4: be a person. I feel like the people I gravitate
- 24:12Speaker 4: towards enjoy life.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Like there's a, there's a level of fame.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Matthew and I always say like, we're just the right
- 24:19Speaker 4: kind of Like, people don't really care about us, but
- 24:23Speaker 4: sometimes it helps getting you into, like, a good restaurant.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Not all the time.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Sometimes they're like, fuck off. But sometimes it helps you.
- 24:30Speaker 4: There's a type of famous that, like, you can't walk
- 24:33Speaker 4: down the street anymore.
- 24:34Speaker 1: And I like... New York City. I like New York City.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I like.
- 24:39Speaker 4: walking down the street and like seeing people and what
- 24:42Speaker 4: are they up to? And like, oh my God, helping
- 24:44Speaker 4: somebody or, you know, being in the world. I like
- 24:47Speaker 4: being in the world and I don't want to be
- 24:50Speaker 4: removed from the world. I've been around people who have
- 24:52Speaker 4: to be removed from the world and that seems lonely.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I'm not interested in that world. I think it is lonely.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Definitely.
- 25:00Speaker 4: And I'm not like, I'm a rarefied artist that I
- 25:03Speaker 4: have to be separate from the world.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Like being the world is what I like.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I'm doing my job so I can fund pleasure in
- 25:10Speaker 1: the world.
- 25:11Speaker 2: And you also want to be a good friend and
- 25:15Speaker 2: a good partner and a good parent and all the
- 25:17Speaker 2: things that you want to be. And if you're so
- 25:19Speaker 2: swept up in that isolationist kind of thing and you
- 25:22Speaker 2: travel around with these like seven people or five people
- 25:25Speaker 2: or whatever it is and you walk down the street
- 25:27Speaker 2: with a whole security team. It tends to attract quite
- 25:29Speaker 2: a lot of attention.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Totally.
- 25:31Speaker 2: So it's almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy when things get
- 25:34Speaker 2: that out of control because it is easy to retreat.
- 25:38Speaker 2: I've seen Mick Jagger on the street in London. If
- 25:40Speaker 2: he can walk around, anybody can walk around like that.
- 25:45Speaker 2: So you do Felicity, you take some time off, you
- 25:47Speaker 2: start doing some movies. We had Sarah Bareilles on recently
- 25:50Speaker 2: who just, who wrote Waitress.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:52Speaker 2: And I know you were in the movie Waitress, which
- 25:54Speaker 2: was another experience in between before you went to the Americans, right?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yes. That came after that, I believe.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Yes.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Yes. I'm trying to remember time. I'm terrible with time.
- 26:02Speaker 1: But yes, Waitress because I didn't have kids. Yes. Adrienne Shelley,
- 26:07Speaker 1: who wrote and directed that film.
- 26:09Speaker 6: Yes.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And Americans came later. And Americans is where you met
- 26:12Speaker 1: your not husband, your lover. My lover. Your lover.
- 26:16Speaker 5: My lover.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Sometimes lover. Mostly roommate. Well, you guys don't get to
- 26:20Speaker 1: see each other very often. We see each other too
- 26:22Speaker 1: fucking much. We see him plenty. Everybody after he just won. Congratulations,
- 26:28Speaker 1: by the way.
- 26:28Speaker 2: He just won two Emmys, which was making history. Two
- 26:33Speaker 2: Hemmys on the— Hemmys now, they're called.
- 26:35Speaker 1: They're Hemmys for him.
- 26:36Speaker 2: It was short for Hemmingways. Two Emmys on the same
- 26:40Speaker 2: night for a comedy and a drama.
- 26:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I know you're not on social media a lot, but
- 26:44Speaker 2: you must have heard that everyone was really shipping, as
- 26:47Speaker 2: the kids say, your relationship.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And shipping is like— Standing, fanning out.
- 26:52Speaker 6: Good, good, good.
- 26:53Speaker 1: They love it.
- 26:53Speaker 2: They love it because you guys did all these double
- 26:55Speaker 2: interviews together. People were loving it because you guys are very,
- 26:59Speaker 2: very cute together.
- 27:00Speaker 1: As you probably know. Well, you're funny too. But you're
- 27:03Speaker 1: very funny together, and people were just loving it. Okay, good.
- 27:07Speaker 2: And I was like, oh gosh, I really hope he's
- 27:09Speaker 2: not online because after winning two awards and then finding
- 27:12Speaker 2: out everybody finds that you're charming and funny to the
- 27:15Speaker 2: whole world is a little too much of an intoxication.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It is. Did you have a feeling that he was
- 27:21Speaker 1: going to win both of those? I think Widows Bay
- 27:24Speaker 1: is just, I mean, it's like a home run. Home run.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I also feel like, first of all, he's so good
- 27:30Speaker 4: in it. Everyone's so good in it. And I feel
- 27:33Speaker 4: like it's just In today's world, when things are so
- 27:37Speaker 4: hard and everything.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Feels so hard, it was such a departure.
- 27:42Speaker 4: It's just like a way– there's so few things that
- 27:44Speaker 4: are just– have nothing to do with anything going on
- 27:46Speaker 4: with he who must not be named and just– it
- 27:50Speaker 4: was so fun and stupid and crazy and they're all
- 27:54Speaker 4: so good in it.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And it just, it was like lightning in a bottle.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And I just, I knew they were going to have
- 27:59Speaker 1: a good night.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:00Speaker 4: I didn't know he would win for the other stuff,
- 28:03Speaker 4: but like, it was great. And he was just so nervous.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I mean, we were all nervous. We were all nervous,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but he, you know, it's, it's a lot, it's a
- 28:12Speaker 1: lot of pressure.
- 28:12Speaker 4: And I, and, and we said to each other, before
- 28:16Speaker 4: he was the week up, just like, we're both nervous people.
- 28:20Speaker 1: We're not in that world that much. We visit that world.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And so we were both so nervous.
- 28:26Speaker 4: And I looked at him like a few days before
- 28:28Speaker 4: and I said, okay, well, can you articulate what you're
- 28:31Speaker 4: most nervous about?
- 28:32Speaker 1: And he's like, yeah, having to speak.
- 28:33Speaker 5: And I said, totally.
- 28:35Speaker 1: And I said, take me off your plate. Like, you
- 28:39Speaker 1: don't have to thank me.
- 28:40Speaker 4: I know you love me. Take me off your plate.
- 28:43Speaker 4: There's He won a few years ago for the Americans,
- 28:48Speaker 4: and people still give him a hard time.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Because he didn't say their name. Like, it's so crazy.
- 28:53Speaker 1: People get nuts. Yeah, that is really stupid. It's stupid,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and it's also lame. Yeah. So I said, take me
- 28:58Speaker 1: off your plate. That's not what this is. I also don't,
- 29:01Speaker 1: let me just interrupt you, and I'm sorry, but I
- 29:03Speaker 1: interrupt people all the time. Go, do it. I hate
- 29:06Speaker 1: that for another reason.
- 29:07Speaker 2: It's like you don't get to decide what somebody's going
- 29:09Speaker 2: to say when they make a speech or give a speech.
- 29:12Speaker 2: You don't get to decide and ascribe what your responsibilities are.
- 29:16Speaker 2: in that there are so many more people to thank
- 29:19Speaker 2: that worked on the actual production than your partner.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Like, you really have, I mean, obviously you have something
- 29:25Speaker 2: to do with his level of, you know, whatever, competence, happiness,
- 29:29Speaker 2: ability to work, but that's not, you're not the primary person.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and whatever. I don't care if you want to
- 29:35Speaker 1: thank the dog walker. You do whatever you want to do.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Right, right, right.
- 29:40Speaker 1: That's your minute. That's your minute. That's your 45 seconds.
- 29:43Speaker 4: So I just said, take me off your plate. Don't,
- 29:45Speaker 4: and we kind of said to each other, we don't
- 29:47Speaker 4: have to thank each other.
- 29:48Speaker 1: This is private.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Like to go back to your thing, this is for
- 29:52Speaker 4: the business people. Like thank whoever you want to thank.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I love that you also are not married.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Yep.
- 29:58Speaker 1: That's fun. I love it too. It is fun. That
- 30:00Speaker 1: keeps things pumping. That's right. It is fun.
- 30:03Speaker 4: I just, I've had a big party, you know, like
- 30:06Speaker 4: I get to dress up all the time.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:09Speaker 4: And I think, I know for a lot of people
- 30:11Speaker 4: marriage is something different, but I and our pal Gloria,
- 30:15Speaker 4: like people... you still have to be married to have
- 30:18Speaker 4: a credit card. We can have credit cards now.
- 30:21Speaker 6: Yes.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I don't need my last name to go away. Yeah.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Like, I'm cool. If you want to be here, be here.
- 30:28Speaker 4: If you don't, that's cool too. Yeah, I like that.
- 30:31Speaker 1: It's also, yeah, it's just sexier to me.
- 30:34Speaker 2: To me, I find being in a long-term relationship with
- 30:38Speaker 2: someone sexier because no one's in for sure the whole time.
- 30:41Speaker 1: That's right. You've got to show up. It's still auditioning process.
- 30:43Speaker 1: That's right. It is.
- 30:45Speaker 4: And, you know, P.S., we have kids so like that's
- 30:48Speaker 4: forever um and but I yeah I don't to me
- 30:52Speaker 4: it's antiquated well you have.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Three I agree with you you have and it's patriarchal
- 30:56Speaker 2: yeah you have three uh you have a 19 year
- 30:59Speaker 2: old I.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Have a 19 year old god that's so fucking weird
- 31:02Speaker 4: it is crazy he's in college.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I know I just was reading your research I'm like
- 31:07Speaker 2: when did our kids get to be 19 I thought
- 31:09Speaker 2: you still had like a seven year old yeah well
- 31:12Speaker 2: I don't kind of well you have a 10 year
- 31:13Speaker 2: old you're talking about Matthew as a.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Seven year old.
- 31:18Speaker 2: What is it like to have kids that are a
- 31:21Speaker 2: 19-year-old and a 10-year-old?
- 31:22Speaker 1: It's wild. What is that? We have 19, we have 14,
- 31:25Speaker 1: and we have 10. Yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 2: That age difference, though, I'm very curious how you think
- 31:30Speaker 2: of yourself like, You know, I mean, you probably, not probably,
- 31:34Speaker 2: you learn so much when you become a mother, right?
- 31:37Speaker 2: And then you do it at a different phase in
- 31:39Speaker 2: your life and you probably know so much more than
- 31:41Speaker 2: you did the first time.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Like, what can you say about that?
- 31:45Speaker 4: I mean, you do know so much more, but like,
- 31:47Speaker 4: just when you think you have it down, someone new
- 31:50Speaker 4: comes and you're like, what are you, what?
- 31:53Speaker 1: This is not, this is harder than the last, what
- 31:56Speaker 1: is this?
- 31:58Speaker 4: So they all come out different and they are completely
- 32:01Speaker 4: their own people and they're all hard and easy in
- 32:06Speaker 4: their own ways. I do think it gets easier as
- 32:09Speaker 4: a parent, but then the kid is different and the
- 32:11Speaker 4: kid's harder.
- 32:12Speaker 1: What is your.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Favorite thing about parenting? Like being a mom, not parenting,
- 32:16Speaker 2: because that doesn't sound sexy.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 32:19Speaker 4: There's this amazing book that came out a few years
- 32:22Speaker 4: ago that one of my girlfriends, who we always.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Share books, sent me. It's called Parenting. all joy and
- 32:28Speaker 1: no fun. That's totally the truth. It's joy. Joy is like,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you're like, it was hard, but I feel proud of
- 32:37Speaker 1: myself for doing it. You know what I mean? I
- 32:39Speaker 1: love them all. They're awesome.
- 32:41Speaker 4: What do I love about it? I love when they
- 32:44Speaker 4: just like, they crack me up, I guess. There's certain
- 32:47Speaker 4: things they do as like their own individual person. And
- 32:50Speaker 4: I'm like, that was funny.
- 32:51Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Or like, oh, you're funny.
- 32:54Speaker 4: Or when they're especially kind, like, you know, when they
- 32:58Speaker 4: do something and you're like, okay, they'll be all right.
- 33:02Speaker 1: They were kind and I didn't force them to be.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Is there something that you learned about yourself that stands
- 33:09Speaker 2: out as like becoming a parent?
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:12Speaker 4: I mean, it's really impossible to be selfish. And that's
- 33:19Speaker 4: a good thing for anyone to learn. Like it's, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 4: there are so many times a day.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I were like, fuck, I just want to do what
- 33:30Speaker 2: I want to fucking do.
- 33:32Speaker 6: Totally.
- 33:33Speaker 1: And that's just the way it goes. You know, we actually,
- 33:36Speaker 1: we just got a dog, which is the best. What
- 33:38Speaker 1: kind of dog? Just like a rescue mutt, but I
- 33:41Speaker 1: just love him so.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I know.
- 33:43Speaker 1: A house is not a home without a dog.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I just like, I waited so long and I was
- 33:47Speaker 4: on this like rescue for so long, for years, just like.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Waiting, biding my time. And we were traveling. I was like,
- 33:52Speaker 1: it's not the right time. It's not the right time.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Is this your first dog? Kind of. Really? Well, I mean,
- 33:56Speaker 1: I grew up with dogs, but I haven't had one
- 33:59Speaker 1: as an adult.
- 34:00Speaker 4: I've had pets, like cats and things, but I haven't
- 34:02Speaker 4: had a family dog as an adult.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And we have a mountain family that we take care
- 34:09Speaker 1: of Banjo when they're away. You have a mountain family?
- 34:12Speaker 4: Well, you know, like a family that you go upstate
- 34:14Speaker 4: with all the time. We call them our mountain family.
- 34:16Speaker 4: And so when the mountain family goes away, we get
- 34:18Speaker 4: to take Banjo, who we adore. And so we kind
- 34:23Speaker 4: of had a dog, but now we have And I just,
- 34:26Speaker 4: I didn't realize how nice it was.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Oh, dogs are the best. I just got another dog too.
- 34:30Speaker 1: How many do you have? I have two.
- 34:32Speaker 2: One is Doug and then his little sister who's at
- 34:34Speaker 2: training camp to learn how to go to the bathroom
- 34:37Speaker 2: in the right place is named Denise. So Doug and Denise.
- 34:40Speaker 2: My last two dogs were named Bert and Bernice. Now
- 34:42Speaker 2: I have a Doug and Denise. Oh my God.
- 34:46Speaker 1: My girlfriend had a cat named Brian, which I also
- 34:48Speaker 1: think is really great.
- 34:50Speaker 6: Brian?
- 34:51Speaker 1: Brian?
- 34:51Speaker 2: I just had Gretchen Whitmer in here before you left,
- 34:54Speaker 2: the governor of Michigan.
- 34:55Speaker 1: She is so rad. Yeah, she is.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Her skin is fucking incredible. I was staring at her
- 34:58Speaker 2: skin the whole time. Was she like lasering her face
- 35:00Speaker 2: off or something? I don't know.
- 35:01Speaker 1: I didn't get to that part because, you know, she's
- 35:02Speaker 1: a politician, so they don't talk about that shit. She
- 35:04Speaker 1: is so cool. She is cool. And she has a
- 35:07Speaker 1: dog named Doug, too. Doug, and what was her other
- 35:10Speaker 1: dog's name? Kevin.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Kevin.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Kevin.
- 35:14Speaker 1: I mean, those are just classic. Classic. Oh, my God. Okay,
- 35:24Speaker 1: so you have three kids. Now you have a new dog.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Now we have a dog. And you have Matthew. And
- 35:29Speaker 1: we have Matthew. Now, Matthew, and I'm assuming Matthew is
- 35:34Speaker 1: very funny. He is very funny. I've heard, I heard his,
- 35:37Speaker 1: what did I hear of him? The Daily. He was
- 35:39Speaker 1: on The Daily right before the award shows. I still
- 35:41Speaker 1: haven't heard that. He's very funny. He's very funny. His
- 35:44Speaker 1: accent is very, I mean, Welsh accent. What do you
- 35:47Speaker 1: think about a Welsh accent? It's so nice.
- 35:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Sexy.
- 35:51Speaker 4: And it's, you know, it's a British accent, but it's
- 35:55Speaker 4: like a softer, well, first of all, Welsh, like any accent,
- 35:59Speaker 4: there's a million. Like he has cousins from the North,
- 36:01Speaker 4: from like Snowdonia that have a wildly different accent than his.
- 36:05Speaker 4: He's from Cardiff, which is like the big town in Wales.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And both his teachers are educators.
- 36:10Speaker 4: So he has kind of, you know, like a proper
- 36:13Speaker 4: Welsh accent, but it's softer than English. And it's more like,
- 36:19Speaker 4: regional is not a nice word. What's an attractive word
- 36:21Speaker 4: for regional? Like, it's just more like earthy. It's more
- 36:25Speaker 4: earthy than like a clipped English accent.
- 36:29Speaker 2: And you obviously guys both have a similar sense of
- 36:33Speaker 2: humor and you make each other laugh a lot.
- 36:35Speaker 1: He does make me laugh. You can see that.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Is there something that you learned about him when he
- 36:40Speaker 2: became a father that you didn't know?
- 36:42Speaker 4: Of all of our friends, he's the most mom dad.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Like it's kind of this incredible thing because Sam, who's
- 36:50Speaker 4: our littlest person, is my third kid and Sam is
- 36:54Speaker 4: Matthew's first kid. I mean, he's a father to the
- 36:58Speaker 4: big kids too, very much so. But Sam is his first.
- 37:04Speaker 4: And Sam's my third. So by the time, like, the
- 37:07Speaker 4: third rolls around, you're like, oh, shit, you have baseball. Okay, well,
- 37:12Speaker 4: I don't know. Grab your, like, Crocs and let's go.
- 37:14Speaker 2: And Matthew's like, pack the bag.
- 37:19Speaker 4: He has snacks for the whole team. He has a
- 37:21Speaker 4: first aid kit. And he shows up, like, seriously.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I'm like, that sounds like a lot of work. Like,
- 37:26Speaker 1: are you really going to? He's like, yeah, this is,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you know, because this is kids.
- 37:30Speaker 2: It's like the third kid gets the eraser stuck in
- 37:32Speaker 2: their nose and you don't take them to the hospital.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'm like, you're fine. Dude, you're fine. My sister did
- 37:36Speaker 1: that with her three kids.
- 37:37Speaker 2: The first one who stuck their eraser in their nose,
- 37:39Speaker 2: she was like at the ER.
- 37:41Speaker 1: The second one, she went to the doctor. The third one,
- 37:43Speaker 1: she's like, it'll fall out on Monday.
- 37:45Speaker 6: It'll fall out.
- 37:45Speaker 1: You'll be fine. And if it's not out.
- 37:47Speaker 2: You strike me as someone who is very good friends
- 37:50Speaker 2: with all of your exes.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Is that true? I am pretty good friends with them.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I mean, because you broke up with them. Well, if
- 37:57Speaker 1: they're cool, yeah.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:59Speaker 5: Are you?
- 37:59Speaker 1: I mean, after time has gone by. After time, yeah.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Usually it's, I mean, in my experience, I've had some
- 38:04Speaker 2: acrimonious breakups where it's too sensitive to talk or where
- 38:08Speaker 2: one person is really upset and it needs some chill time.
- 38:12Speaker 2: But after enough time goes by, then all bets are
- 38:15Speaker 2: off and you can participate again in a nice- Like.
- 38:18Speaker 1: With Speedman, I love seeing him.
- 38:20Speaker 4: I mean, we were like babies too, but he was
- 38:23Speaker 4: always a better friend than he was a boyfriend.
- 38:27Speaker 2: And that's a great way to describe a lot of men,
- 38:30Speaker 2: because I have a lot of great guy friends that
- 38:32Speaker 2: are terrible at being in relationships. I also am not
- 38:35Speaker 2: a huge fan of being in a heavy relationship.
- 38:38Speaker 1: I don't think anyone is. I mean, a few people are.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Some people are.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I mean, you're in a heavy relationship and you like it.
- 38:44Speaker 2: You know, we're in a heavy relationship, but I have this.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Gift. We have this gift of being apart a lot.
- 38:53Speaker 1: And that is the way to do it.
- 38:55Speaker 4: He's getting ready to go to the UK for five months.
- 39:00Speaker 4: I mean, he comes back around occasionally. But like, you know,
- 39:04Speaker 4: as hard as it is, the house is mine.
- 39:08Speaker 1: The house is mine. The bed is mine. The rules
- 39:10Speaker 1: are mine. In my rules... everyone goes to motherfucking sleep
- 39:14Speaker 1: at 9 p.m. Like, it's lights out. Like, I'm like,
- 39:17Speaker 1: good night, everybody. If you need mom, I'm asleep.
- 39:19Speaker 4: And, you know, it's my rules. Everything's really clean. Everything's organized.
- 39:24Speaker 4: You know, it's probably more boring without him, but it's
- 39:28Speaker 4: my rules. And then he comes back and everyone's so
- 39:30Speaker 4: excited and we're excited.
- 39:32Speaker 1: You know, being apart is nice.
- 39:34Speaker 3: I know.
- 39:34Speaker 1: It really is saves so many people.
- 39:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And what kind of, like, do you guys have any
- 39:40Speaker 2: sort of, like, rules around that?
- 39:42Speaker 1: How long you're away when you go back? Like, will
- 39:43Speaker 1: you go over there to visit him?
- 39:45Speaker 6: Of course.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, in an ideal world, I think.
- 39:49Speaker 4: especially in our creepy world where you're like, this is
- 39:53Speaker 4: such a weird business where you're like making out with,
- 39:55Speaker 4: it's such a weird, what a weird job. If I
- 40:00Speaker 4: can find something that pays me more, I'll do it. Ideally,
- 40:03Speaker 4: it'd be great to see each other every two weeks.
- 40:06Speaker 4: It's probably not going to happen this way. And as
- 40:08Speaker 4: we've gotten older, we care about it less and less
- 40:12Speaker 4: because we're like, even having sex with someone new sounds
- 40:15Speaker 4: like a lot of work.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. For everyone over 50, no one is interested
- 40:19Speaker 1: in that.
- 40:20Speaker 2: If you have a partner, all my friends who are
- 40:22Speaker 2: married or divorced or married, if they're like, if this
- 40:25Speaker 2: doesn't work out or something happens to my husband, I'm
- 40:27Speaker 2: not looking for anything else to follow this.
- 40:30Speaker 1: That's all you need.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you get to a certain age and you're like,
- 40:33Speaker 2: is this really necessary? I want to talk about Diplomats
- 40:37Speaker 2: Season 4 because that's coming up. And I also think
- 40:40Speaker 2: this is a good idea to pitch to you.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Okay, pitch.
- 40:42Speaker 2: I think when you win your next award, you should
- 40:45Speaker 2: thank all of your ex-boyfriends without thanking your current partner.
- 40:49Speaker 1: That's such a good idea. I think that's a good
- 40:50Speaker 1: trend to set.
- 40:50Speaker 5: You know what I mean? You know what?
- 40:51Speaker 1: I just want to thank the men in my life
- 40:53Speaker 1: who really helped me. Start with Scott Friedman and just
- 40:54Speaker 1: move on from there. And your ex-husband.
- 40:57Speaker 2: And just get to everyone besides Matthew because that'll really
- 41:00Speaker 2: get people rolling.
- 41:01Speaker 1: That would be so good. That'd be a really good bit.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 1: That'd be really fucking good. I think it's worth considering seriously.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Maybe you'll help me write it.
- 41:08Speaker 2: The show, First of all, the Americans was, we didn't
- 41:11Speaker 2: give it enough credit or justice, time, and respect because
- 41:14Speaker 2: that show.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Was fucking awesome. It was awesome. What you guys did
- 41:18Speaker 1: on that show was so awesome. It was awesome. So
- 41:20Speaker 1: much fun it looked like.
- 41:21Speaker 4: It was so fun and also we were like falling
- 41:23Speaker 4: in love and staying up all night and like having
- 41:25Speaker 4: sex all the time and.
- 41:26Speaker 7: Just like wearing disguises like I'm fucking crazy wigs and
- 41:31Speaker 7: like wearing pearls when did you ever worn pearls and
- 41:33Speaker 7: like fucking in trailers and fuck everywhere I mean it
- 41:36Speaker 7: was insanity it was so fun.
- 41:38Speaker 2: And sneaky and sexy and so good who made the
- 41:40Speaker 2: first move with the two of you oh that's a
- 41:43Speaker 2: good question you know I think I did I love
- 41:46Speaker 2: that yeah Nice.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Nice.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Okay, so you go to the Americans. You have an
- 41:51Speaker 2: incredible success with that. How did you decide to end
- 41:53Speaker 2: that show?
- 41:55Speaker 1: We didn't decide. They did. The writers did. Yeah, and
- 41:58Speaker 1: it was such an epic ending. Oh, it was so great.
- 42:01Speaker 1: It's a great ending. Perfection. Yeah. Chef's kiss, everyone.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Chef's kiss.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Chef's kiss in case you're not watching this.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Sorry, chef's kiss.
- 42:08Speaker 2: And you can only hear it. And then how did
- 42:10Speaker 2: you come across the diplomat? Like who brought it to you?
- 42:13Speaker 2: It's such a fucking perfect role for you. I love
- 42:15Speaker 2: how unkempt you are. Oh, I love it so much.
- 42:19Speaker 2: And it's so beautiful. Like you're so beautifully you in
- 42:22Speaker 2: this powerful position. Like the way that you exhibit this
- 42:27Speaker 2: character or the way that you play this character is
- 42:30Speaker 2: so relatable in such an unrelatable situation.
- 42:35Speaker 4: So- I took a long break after The Americans because
- 42:39Speaker 4: I had a great run and I needed to just like,
- 42:42Speaker 4: my whole thing is you work really hard, the output
- 42:45Speaker 4: is so much, and then you go away and you
- 42:47Speaker 4: fill back up. Like you have a recharge, you fill
- 42:49Speaker 4: back up, you like read books, you get life experience,
- 42:52Speaker 4: and then you get ready for something else. And I
- 42:55Speaker 4: wasn't really looking for something. And Debra Kahn, who is
- 43:00Speaker 4: our showrunner, creator, writer, It got sent to me and
- 43:03Speaker 4: I was like, oh, shit, this is good. And this
- 43:06Speaker 4: is so funny and so smart. And it totally did
- 43:09Speaker 4: not work for my life. Matthew was working in L.A.
- 43:13Speaker 1: On Perry Mason. I thought you were going to say
- 43:16Speaker 1: Perry menopause. I'm like, oh, has he figured anything out yet?
- 43:18Speaker 1: Not yet. But we're working on it. We're giving him
- 43:21Speaker 1: all the estrogen we can.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Fill him up.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Fill her up. And he– that was our deal. Like
- 43:29Speaker 1: you go away, I stay home, take care of the kids.
- 43:31Speaker 4: You go away, I stay, you know, and this came
- 43:34Speaker 4: up and it not only shot the same time he
- 43:37Speaker 4: was completing this big job, it shot in London. And
- 43:41Speaker 4: I was like, but I want to do it. And
- 43:44Speaker 4: he was like, this doesn't work. And I remember I
- 43:48Speaker 4: was like, yeah, right.
- 43:49Speaker 5: It doesn't work.
- 43:50Speaker 1: And we really talked about it. I kept circling back.
- 43:53Speaker 4: And I remember I took myself, I do this like
- 43:55Speaker 4: solo trip by myself every year in Big Sur. And
- 43:57Speaker 4: I just, I go to that like super romantic place
- 43:59Speaker 4: by myself and I like walk by myself and it's
- 44:02Speaker 4: just so great.
- 44:03Speaker 1: How many days do you do that for? I do
- 44:04Speaker 1: it like for three days. That's nice. It's so nice.
- 44:07Speaker 5: That's cute.
- 44:07Speaker 4: And I eat like great food and drink tons of
- 44:09Speaker 4: wine and just like get massages and breathe in the nature,
- 44:13Speaker 4: like whatever. And everyone's like having romantic like evenings and
- 44:17Speaker 4: I'm just there with my book.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yes. I'm going to send you so many book recommendations.
- 44:21Speaker 6: Okay, I love it. Please.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I'm in love with books. Okay, me too. It's the best.
- 44:25Speaker 4: So I'm walking up like those hills and I'm like,
- 44:28Speaker 4: I want to do this job. And so I was like,
- 44:30Speaker 4: I want to do it. And we were like, this
- 44:32Speaker 4: is going to be really hard. And he kept going,
- 44:33Speaker 4: this is going to be really hard. And I said, yep,
- 44:35Speaker 4: it is, but I'm doing it. And I am so thankful.
- 44:40Speaker 4: And yeah, there were a hairy two months where the
- 44:43Speaker 4: kids were still in school and it was like my
- 44:45Speaker 4: mom had to come and blah, blah, blah.
- 44:48Speaker 1: But I love that job so much.
- 44:50Speaker 4: The thing that's good about Debra Kahn, as well as
- 44:52Speaker 4: being this incredible writer, it's about all these things I
- 44:57Speaker 4: care about the right kind of politics and, you know,
- 45:02Speaker 4: being of service to your country and caring about the
- 45:05Speaker 4: world and also being funny and self-deprecating and all the
- 45:08Speaker 4: things I love and the messy relationships. But Debra Kahn,
- 45:13Speaker 4: it's not enough anymore to be a leader where you're
- 45:17Speaker 4: just excellent at what you do. I think people have
- 45:20Speaker 4: to fucking start taking care of each other. And Debra
- 45:23Speaker 4: is such a good example of that. She is our age.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I watch her.
- 45:28Speaker 4: She's trained these younger writers who are under her. She
- 45:32Speaker 4: brings them up. So many of them are now staff writers.
- 45:35Speaker 4: They have credits. They have Emmy nominations. She like raises
- 45:39Speaker 4: them up and she lets them succeed. And we need
- 45:43Speaker 4: more of that. I'm so tired of these people who
- 45:46Speaker 4: are like, won't let go of power.
- 45:48Speaker 1: We need new people.
- 45:49Speaker 4: And it's our job to like raise those new people
- 45:53Speaker 4: and allow them to succeed. And she does that so gracefully.
- 45:57Speaker 4: That being said, She's just so funny. She's so, like,
- 46:02Speaker 4: has such a raunchy, fun, naughty sense of humor. And
- 46:06Speaker 4: she's strangely, in this time, hopeful. Like, she, even for
- 46:10Speaker 4: marriage and our country, and she, it's sort of, like,
- 46:15Speaker 4: acerbic and combative at times. But ultimately, like, she wants
- 46:20Speaker 4: everyone to win. And she wants marriage to win. And
- 46:22Speaker 4: she wants, like, even more than me, you know, anything. she's,
- 46:26Speaker 4: she's really good like that. And she's just, it's such
- 46:29Speaker 4: a sweet spot. I love this job so much.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Season four of The Diplomat premieres next week. So is
- 46:34Speaker 2: there anything you can tell us? If not, you don't
- 46:36Speaker 2: have to, but if there's anything, any little crumbs you
- 46:40Speaker 2: can feed us?
- 46:41Speaker 1: It's, oh God, it just continues. It's, Look at your
- 46:45Speaker 1: cute little feet. What size are those? Six. Oh, what
- 46:48Speaker 1: a little baby you are. Oh, my God. They're so cute.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Oh, six.
- 46:55Speaker 1: They're like snackable. They're snackable. My 10-year-old has the same
- 46:58Speaker 1: size feet as me. Oh, that's great. Are those his shoes? No,
- 47:02Speaker 1: they're not. But you can share them.
- 47:03Speaker 4: And my dog has eaten part of them. And I
- 47:06Speaker 4: know my 14-year-old already, her feet are big. She's taller
- 47:09Speaker 4: than me and her feet are bigger. And I just
- 47:11Speaker 4: am like, thank God my shoes are safe. She will
- 47:14Speaker 4: never be able to steal them from me. No, it's just,
- 47:17Speaker 4: it continues. It's so good. Where it ends, I can't say,
- 47:21Speaker 4: but where it ends is so appropriate for right now.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Well, you're not, oh, okay, copy that. I was about
- 47:27Speaker 2: to say, you're not giving us any information.
- 47:28Speaker 1: I know, I know, I'm sorry, I can't. That's okay,
- 47:30Speaker 1: that's okay.
- 47:30Speaker 2: We're not here to pump you for things that you
- 47:32Speaker 2: can't talk about.
- 47:33Speaker 6: Okay, great.
- 47:37Speaker 1: We only have 10 minutes left. We usually take callers.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Yeah, did I tell you? No, no, no, no.
- 47:42Speaker 5: You guys are rocking and rolling.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Don't apologize. Everything's fine.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Do you want to take– we'll take one call before
- 47:47Speaker 2: we close out? I give advice on this podcast.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I love it. Yes, yes. I'm assuming you've been to therapy. Yes,
- 47:52Speaker 1: of course I have. We just dole out what we've learned.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I love it. I love this. Real people, real problems.
- 47:57Speaker 3: I'm going to go with the juicier of the two here.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Yes, please.
- 48:00Speaker 3: So we have Kelly calling in, and she says, Dear Chelsea–
- 48:04Speaker 3: I've been dating my partner for two years. It's been
- 48:06Speaker 3: a true love affair with a lot of toxic fighting,
- 48:09Speaker 3: mostly around one topic, non-monogamy.
- 48:12Speaker 1: When we first started dating, we were open. We both
- 48:14Speaker 1: had multiple other partners.
- 48:16Speaker 3: We fell in love, and two years ago, it became
- 48:18Speaker 3: apparent that it would be easier to be monogamous, mostly
- 48:21Speaker 3: because I found his reactions to my escapades to be
- 48:24Speaker 3: less than positive, which led me to be less honest
- 48:26Speaker 3: about them and caused a cycle of mistrust and toxic
- 48:30Speaker 3: fighting that we can't.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Seem to get out of.
- 48:32Speaker 3: I've remained close with many of my other partners, and yes,
- 48:34Speaker 3: there have been what now amounts to multiple incidents of cheating,
- 48:38Speaker 3: me going outside our monogamous arrangement. Our cycle is as follows.
- 48:43Speaker 3: I withhold information or cheat, he gets very angry and
- 48:45Speaker 3: expresses himself with immature insults and aggression, then we make
- 48:49Speaker 3: up and go to town on each other for days.
- 48:51Speaker 3: We're really rocking the whole codependent, dysfunctional attachment thing and
- 48:55Speaker 3: annoying all of our closest friends with the constant drama.
- 48:58Speaker 3: We're solid when it comes to other types of conflict.
- 49:00Speaker 3: We constantly break up and get back together. But there
- 49:03Speaker 3: is a reason we keep doing this to each other.
- 49:05Speaker 3: The sex is unreal. We're chemically bonded to each other's scent.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Our chemistry is unparalleled, and it's proved too hard to
- 49:12Speaker 3: give up for both of us. We've recently stumbled upon
- 49:15Speaker 3: an idea, and I want to know what you think
- 49:16Speaker 3: about this. The idea is, I'll be his sub. He
- 49:20Speaker 3: can punish me for transgressions. We discussed it, set rules
- 49:23Speaker 3: and expectations, safe words, et cetera. I'll do whatever he wants,
- 49:27Speaker 3: be more flexible in giving to his sexual impulses, and
- 49:30Speaker 3: he'll have the ability to set expectations within our guidelines
- 49:34Speaker 3: and punishments when I make mistakes or cheat. Do you
- 49:37Speaker 3: think a dynamic like this can help us solve our
- 49:39Speaker 3: trust issues or at least help? And whether or not
- 49:41Speaker 3: we do this compromise, can a toxic relationship be fixed?
- 49:45Speaker 5: Thanks, Kelly. Hi. Hi, Kelly.
- 49:48Speaker 2: This is our special guest, Keri Russell, with us today.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Hello.
- 49:52Speaker 5: Nice to meet you.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Did I say Kelly Russell? Keri Russell.
- 49:56Speaker 4: Did you say Kelly?
- 49:59Speaker 1: Well, she's Kelly now.
- 50:02Speaker 6: Wow.
- 50:03Speaker 1: That's quite a dynamic. That was quite a dynamic.
- 50:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I wanted to get your attention, A. And B,
- 50:08Speaker 6: it's totally true. It's recently come to my attention that
- 50:12Speaker 6: this is like a backwards ass way to look at
- 50:15Speaker 6: like a BDSM dynamic because you have to have like
- 50:19Speaker 6: a psychological safety first.
- 50:21Speaker 5: Like big fucking duh. So there's that.
- 50:24Speaker 2: But let me ask you a question. You opened your
- 50:26Speaker 2: relationship up. Then you closed it, but now you're cheating.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Is there a world where you can just open back
- 50:32Speaker 2: up your relationship so you're not cheating?
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:35Speaker 5: So that's basically my intention.
- 50:36Speaker 6: I think that I have always wanted to be in
- 50:39Speaker 6: an open dynamic because I have a very, like I
- 50:43Speaker 6: have a deep aversion to being like enmeshed. Like I don't,
- 50:46Speaker 6: I don't want to be in that like couple dynamic
- 50:50Speaker 6: where you like get, you know, roommate syndrome and, and
- 50:54Speaker 6: you know, the passion falls apart.
- 50:56Speaker 5: I don't want that dynamic, right? I did that for
- 50:59Speaker 5: 22 years. I'm done doing that.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Okay.
- 51:01Speaker 5: Okay.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Copy that, sister.
- 51:03Speaker 6: We hear you.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Right?
- 51:04Speaker 6: And so I have like this fierce independence that I'm
- 51:07Speaker 6: trying to like maintain. And the only way that I
- 51:09Speaker 6: can do it, like we so easily get enmeshed. And
- 51:13Speaker 6: I think, you know, I give that to him, but
- 51:18Speaker 6: it's mixed signals, right? Like I do fall into it
- 51:22Speaker 6: with him, but I don't actually want it. Like, I
- 51:24Speaker 6: want my independence. And the way that that comes through
- 51:27Speaker 6: is that that's how I want to have, you know,
- 51:29Speaker 6: multiple relationships with multiple people so that I can keep that.
- 51:32Speaker 1: And is he not into that? He's not going to
- 51:34Speaker 1: do that? He's into it. Or is he going to
- 51:36Speaker 1: do that?
- 51:36Speaker 6: I mean, he's totally bi, so he's into it. He
- 51:40Speaker 6: just wants to have, like, create a sense of security
- 51:42Speaker 6: in the relationship first.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Right. Right. Okay.
- 51:46Speaker 6: Okay.
- 51:46Speaker 1: So do you guys have a therapist that you work
- 51:49Speaker 1: with or talk to? Not yet.
- 51:50Speaker 5: We're working on that.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Get one.
- 51:52Speaker 2: You need to get, as much as I would love
- 51:55Speaker 2: to be the answer to all of your problems, you
- 51:58Speaker 2: need a third party.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Since you guys love third parties, you know what I mean?
- 52:03Speaker 1: It's very natural.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You got to get somebody, a therapist that is well-versed
- 52:08Speaker 2: in this dialogue and being in an.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Open relationship, which is all great.
- 52:12Speaker 2: It's great that you're honest about your desires and it's
- 52:14Speaker 2: great that you're honest about where you are because there's
- 52:17Speaker 2: really nothing worse than somebody who's lying. We don't have
- 52:20Speaker 2: time for that anymore. We're fucking women and we're sick
- 52:23Speaker 2: of it. So everyone just needs to be upfront. So
- 52:25Speaker 2: I love that you're being honest with yourself and now
- 52:29Speaker 2: with your partner and trying to set a new dynamic
- 52:31Speaker 2: and set new boundaries, but you really need, because there's
- 52:35Speaker 2: a manipulation that I think comes along with this kinds
- 52:38Speaker 2: of things. Since you guys are getting out of a
- 52:39Speaker 2: toxic space, I really think it would be the most
- 52:42Speaker 2: healthy way to go about it is to get a
- 52:44Speaker 2: third party involved so you can sit down and you
- 52:47Speaker 2: make very.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Clear, like, you know, boundaries, right? About what you want
- 52:52Speaker 1: and what's going to be too far.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Even if you've done that with each other, I kind
- 52:57Speaker 2: of go just because you came out of a very
- 52:59Speaker 2: toxic part of your relationship where there were transgressions.
- 53:03Speaker 1: And lies and stuff like that.
- 53:06Speaker 2: I think it's just great to lay it all on
- 53:07Speaker 2: the table and have a period of like, not reconciliation,
- 53:12Speaker 2: but like understanding that you're both going to really move
- 53:16Speaker 2: forward in this new version with honesty, with integrity and
- 53:19Speaker 2: respect for each other.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Totally.
- 53:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 53:22Speaker 6: Great.
- 53:23Speaker 2: And I know you may think you've accomplished that, but
- 53:26Speaker 2: I'm telling you, you haven't unless you have a third
- 53:28Speaker 2: party involved, because then you're accountable to somebody more than
- 53:32Speaker 2: yourself and to each other. And I think that's important
- 53:34Speaker 2: for what you're talking about.
- 53:36Speaker 6: So you think that toxic dynamics, like in your experience,
- 53:40Speaker 6: both of your experience, when you look around at your
- 53:42Speaker 6: girlfriends and your friends, do you see if people get in,
- 53:46Speaker 6: like if there's, you know, real intense dynamics right from
- 53:50Speaker 6: the get-go, And those dynamics have a lot of toxic
- 53:53Speaker 6: fighting and getting, fighting and then getting back together and
- 53:56Speaker 6: repair and fighting and getting.
- 53:57Speaker 5: Back together and repair.
- 53:59Speaker 6: Do you see that turning out for any of the
- 54:01Speaker 6: people in your life? Like, have you seen this actually
- 54:03Speaker 6: like turn around? Can you turn around a dynamic like that?
- 54:05Speaker 1: Well, it might be the way, it might be the
- 54:08Speaker 1: way you're fighting too. There might be tools you could learn,
- 54:11Speaker 1: which is to what Chelsea was saying.
- 54:13Speaker 4: But, you know, I think bottom line, you know what
- 54:16Speaker 4: you know.
- 54:17Speaker 1: If your gut is saying it's toxic, it's probably toxic.
- 54:20Speaker 1: You know what?
- 54:20Speaker 4: As great as the sex is, there's someone else that
- 54:23Speaker 4: has great sex too. Like someone's out there. If it
- 54:26Speaker 4: feels bad, it probably feels bad.
- 54:29Speaker 1: But I have a feeling to her, to you, it
- 54:31Speaker 1: might feel a little bit good.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Do you like the toxicity? Is there a part of you,
- 54:36Speaker 2: any part of you that likes the drama?
- 54:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:40Speaker 6: And that is what my therapist would say is like,
- 54:43Speaker 6: you clearly like the conflict.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Because you keep going back.
- 54:46Speaker 6: Right.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Because you haven't learned what you need to learn yet.
- 54:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:49Speaker 2: So But I also think like, I don't think anything
- 54:53Speaker 2: is said and done. You can accomplish what you want
- 54:56Speaker 2: to accomplish. If you want to be in a non-toxic
- 54:58Speaker 2: open relationship, you can do that.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 55:00Speaker 2: But you need help to do that with your partner,
- 55:02Speaker 2: not just on your own.
- 55:04Speaker 6: Like.
- 55:04Speaker 2: You need help to do that. You can overcome the toxicity.
- 55:07Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if we know people that have or not.
- 55:09Speaker 1: This is you. You know what I mean? Totally.
- 55:12Speaker 2: So if you really want and have the intention and
- 55:14Speaker 2: you want to have a non-toxic relationship with all of
- 55:17Speaker 2: these understandings, then you can.
- 55:20Speaker 1: You just have to go about it the right way.
- 55:22Speaker 2: And you making up the guidelines and him making up
- 55:25Speaker 2: the guidelines, that's not always just the best way. It's
- 55:28Speaker 2: always good to have somebody who's not involved in your
- 55:30Speaker 2: life give advice to you and help you create tools
- 55:34Speaker 2: for when you do fight and when this does happen again,
- 55:37Speaker 2: because it most likely will, that you have the tools
- 55:41Speaker 2: and they're accessible to you. And just to gain, it's
- 55:45Speaker 2: great that you have your own therapist, but it's also
- 55:47Speaker 2: just great to gain insight into another person and understand
- 55:52Speaker 2: what triggers them and how you can avoid doing that
- 55:55Speaker 2: And how, and it's just, why not get something, you know,
- 56:00Speaker 2: have somebody else involved in the whole process?
- 56:02Speaker 1: So I would, that's my recommendation. I love that you're
- 56:05Speaker 1: living out loud and doing whatever the fuck you want.
- 56:08Speaker 1: It's great. But there's no reason to have toxicity. No, no, no, no.
- 56:13Speaker 5: I agree.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:14Speaker 5: It's something I could use a little less of in
- 56:17Speaker 5: my life for sure. Yeah. So that's actually very sound advice.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Thank you. Oh, great. I'm so glad you called in.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 56:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Will you let us know how it goes, Kelly?
- 56:26Speaker 5: I would be delighted to give you an update later.
- 56:29Speaker 1: I love it. Thanks so much. That was a lot
- 56:32Speaker 1: to unpack.
- 56:32Speaker 5: It was.
- 56:33Speaker 1: That was complex. It was complex. And also, yeah, I mean,
- 56:38Speaker 1: there's a lot going on.
- 56:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 1: It's a whole new world.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Before we wrap this up, can you think of the
- 56:43Speaker 2: worst advice you've ever been given? Or a piece of
- 56:47Speaker 2: advice that you've been given that was terrible.
- 56:49Speaker 1: That was terrible. That was terrible.
- 56:53Speaker 4: I mean, like, I'm going to say one terrible and
- 56:56Speaker 4: one good piece. The terrible was like one of the
- 57:00Speaker 4: last back in the, well.
- 57:02Speaker 1: We're still in it. I was going to say back
- 57:03Speaker 1: when they were making all the superhero movies, but guess what?
- 57:06Speaker 1: We still are.
- 57:07Speaker 4: So, but I was still living in LA, didn't have kids.
- 57:11Speaker 4: And they were like, the note from the casting person
- 57:13Speaker 4: on this screen test is, She has to wear very
- 57:16Speaker 4: high heels and a very, very, very padded bra.
- 57:19Speaker 2: No, she really, she has to wear that because she's
- 57:22Speaker 2: not going to get the part. Otherwise, I was like,
- 57:25Speaker 2: I got it with like the four varies.
- 57:28Speaker 1: What the heck?
- 57:30Speaker 4: But a good piece of advice or like something that
- 57:32Speaker 4: I heard someone say.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Did you do, but did you take the bad advice?
- 57:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Yeah. And did you get the role?
- 57:38Speaker 7: No.
- 57:38Speaker 1: No, I didn't. They were like, we're not looking for
- 57:44Speaker 1: 13-year-old boy bodies.
- 57:45Speaker 4: We want like Megan Fox.
- 57:48Speaker 1: They probably got it.
- 57:48Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 57:49Speaker 4: And then I was with a good piece of advice
- 57:53Speaker 4: or a comment that I love that I think about
- 57:55Speaker 4: all the time, especially at this age. I have this
- 57:58Speaker 4: friend of mine who's a little older than us, Harry.
- 58:01Speaker 4: And we were having dinner one time and he said,
- 58:04Speaker 4: you know, we were talking about complications in life or whatever.
- 58:06Speaker 4: And he said, you know, I'm just, at this age, I,
- 58:11Speaker 4: and I was much younger when he said this to me,
- 58:12Speaker 4: but I really remembered it. He said, I'm just trying
- 58:15Speaker 4: to be my own provocateur. Like, I want to be
- 58:18Speaker 4: the one who's like demanding things of myself or stirring
- 58:22Speaker 4: something up or questioning something. I want to be my
- 58:24Speaker 4: own provocateur. And I remember going, what is he talking?
- 58:26Speaker 4: And now I totally get it. I want to be
- 58:29Speaker 4: like answering to myself. I want to, what do I
- 58:33Speaker 4: want out of this? What do I, like, I don't
- 58:34Speaker 4: want to be reactive to somebody else. I want to,
- 58:37Speaker 4: I want to be the person I'm reacting to.
- 58:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 4: And creating my world and everything.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Great.
- 58:43Speaker 5: I love that.
- 58:44Speaker 1: That's great. That's something to think on. That's something to
- 58:46Speaker 1: chomp on. Chomp on. Because that can, like, turn into
- 58:49Speaker 1: lots of different things in your life.
- 58:50Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Thank you, Carrie. Thank you for having me. This was
- 58:53Speaker 1: really cool. That was so nice.
- 58:56Speaker 4: Thank you.
