- 0:00Hey you guys, happy Thursday. This is friendly.
- 0:04Thanks for joining me on another podcast episode on In the
- 0:08Stillness. Today.
- 0:09We're going to be in first John chapter 2, reading through
- 0:13verses 20 to 23. And I just want to preface,
- 0:17these verses can feel a little confusing at first.
- 0:21I think the wording can feel circular.
- 0:24And so I really want to break it apart and hopefully help it land
- 0:29in a way that is both clear and impactful, as it was for me.
- 0:34So let's go ahead and read through the verses.
- 0:38But the Holy One has anointed you, and you all know the truth.
- 0:43So I'm not writing to you because you don't know the
- 0:45truth, but because you do know it, and no lie belongs to the
- 0:50truth. Who is the real liar but the one
- 0:54who denies that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 0:58He is the Antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the
- 1:01Son. Whoever rejects the Son rejects
- 1:05the Father also. Whoever embraces the Son
- 1:09embraces the Father also. OK, let's go ahead and start
- 1:15with the word anointed. As we see here, back then in
- 1:20biblical times, anointing was the pouring of oil, usually
- 1:25olive oil, over someone and it symbolized that they were set
- 1:29apart for a specific purpose, oftentimes for royal service or
- 1:34even for healing. So when John is saying you have
- 1:39been anointed, he's saying you have been given the Holy Spirit
- 1:44by God the Father. And not everyone has this gift.
- 1:49Out of the 8 billion people in the world, Christians are set
- 1:54apart, marked by the Spirit of God himself.
- 1:59So I want to pause for a second and ask, do you actually live
- 2:04with that awareness or does your life look the same as everyone
- 2:10else's in the world? And John then says that because
- 2:15of this anointing, you know the truth.
- 2:19And that is where I think it can feel confusing.
- 2:22Like, what does that even mean? But listen to this from first
- 2:26Corinthians 2 verse 16. For who has ever intimately
- 2:30known the mind of the Lord Yahweh well enough to become His
- 2:35counselor? Christ has and we possess
- 2:39Christ's perceptions. That is one of my favorite
- 2:43verses. It's crazy.
- 2:45It's not that we suddenly know everything.
- 2:48God knows we're still human. We have finite brains, but we've
- 2:53been given a new capacity to actually understand spiritual
- 2:57truth. It's a different level.
- 3:00So now we have access to the mind of Christ so we can
- 3:04actually go to God and as James encourages us, ask for more
- 3:10wisdom. We can ask for revelation and
- 3:13believe that He wants to give us more.
- 3:17Like in Jeremiah 29 verse 13, it says you will seek me and find
- 3:22me when you seek me with all your heart.
- 3:26So 2 questions. Do you actually expect God to
- 3:31speak to you through His word when you open up the Bible?
- 3:35Do you believe that He has something specifically for you
- 3:40or do you read it just hoping to understand something on your own
- 3:44or by your own ability? And this all matters because of
- 3:49what Jesus says in John 16 verse 13, that the Holy Spirit is the
- 3:54Spirit of truth who guides us into all the truth.
- 3:58And then John 14 verse 6 says I am the way, the truth and the
- 4:04life. So Jesus's claim is showing us
- 4:08that the Spirit reveals truth, but Jesus is the truth.
- 4:14So yes, if you know Jesus, you are walking in truth.
- 4:18But here's the tension. You can also think that you know
- 4:22truth and still not actually know Jesus who is the truth.
- 4:28And that is where deception can creep in.
- 4:32Y'all, Satan is called the deceiver not because everything
- 4:37he offers looks obviously wrong, but because it can look almost
- 4:43right. He wants people to believe that
- 4:46they have found life, that they found it apart from Jesus.
- 4:51He's going to do anything in his willpower to keep you from
- 4:55actually discovering Jesus. But Psalm 16, verse 11 tells us
- 5:00that true life is found in God's presence.
- 5:04So anything that keeps you from the Lord, even if it looks good,
- 5:09even if it feels spiritual, it can actually lead you into
- 5:13living a lie. So just ask yourself, am I truly
- 5:19rooted in Jesus or am I just familiar with spiritual language
- 5:26or with the right answers? Now John continues and makes a
- 5:31very bold claim. If you deny the Son, you deny
- 5:36the Father. And as I read this, I kinda had
- 5:41to talk to the Lord and wrestle with this 'cause I was like, why
- 5:45would someone want God but not Jesus?
- 5:50And honestly, it's because a general idea of God feels safe.
- 5:57And us humans, we don't like discomfort, but Jesus does not
- 6:01let you stay comfortable because whenever he comes into the
- 6:06world, he makes the gospel personal.
- 6:09He's calling for surrender and he says he is the only way to
- 6:14eternal life. So that's confronting human
- 6:17pride. But Scripture is clear that
- 6:20there is no separation. Colossians 2 verse 9 says for in
- 6:25Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.
- 6:30So to accept Jesus is to accept God the Father, but to reject
- 6:36Jesus is to reject the very way that God chose to reveal himself
- 6:41to the world. Now, John does not water this
- 6:45down. He says anyone who denies Jesus
- 6:48as the Messiah is an Antichrist opposed to truth.
- 6:55So this is not just theological, it is so spiritual.
- 7:01And there are people in this world, even groups, cults that
- 7:07claim to follow God, but they deny who Jesus truly is.
- 7:12They might say that they're Christians, but they don't
- 7:16believe that Jesus is actually divine.
- 7:20And we cannot afford to be passive about that.
- 7:25In truth, we have to call things what they are because God's Word
- 7:31is the truth and it is final. So we are not to edit in what
- 7:37feels comfortable or what we think is right.
- 7:42And I love how this comes back to the anointing.
- 7:46In the beginning, if you are in Christ, you are not walking
- 7:50around just trying to earn your identity or your approval
- 7:55because you have already been chosen.
- 7:58You've been set apart. Think about someone who has been
- 8:03appointed to a high position like a king or someone for
- 8:07Secret Service. They're not just constantly
- 8:10questioning their role based on others opinions.
- 8:15They know who they are and what their job is.
- 8:20So let me ask y'all, do you live like someone who's been anointed
- 8:26if you're a believer and proclaim Christ as Lord?
- 8:30Or do you live like someone who might still be searching for
- 8:34their identity? Y'all, this is not about pride.
- 8:40It's about confidence. And this confidence is rooted in
- 8:44humility because you understand, you believe that you've been
- 8:48entrusted with the truth, and you live like it.
- 8:52So let me go ahead and close this out in prayer.
- 8:57Dear God, thank you for what you reveal to us through your Word
- 9:04and through your Spirit, the Spirit of truth.
- 9:09Thank You that we're not just left to figure this out on our
- 9:12own, but that You guide us into the truth so lovingly, so
- 9:17gently, but also directly. Jesus, we acknowledge that You
- 9:25are the way, the truth, and the life.
- 9:30Would You help us to truly know You, not just in our minds, not
- 9:35just in words, but in our hearts, and let that be
- 9:39reflected in the love in our lives.
- 9:44I pray that You would protect us from deception, from the evil. 1
- 9:49Would you give us discernment and teach us to walk confidently
- 9:54and humbly in the truth that you have given to us?
- 9:59May we seek you with all of our hearts every single day of our
- 10:03lives. We pray this in Jesus name,
- 10:06Amen. OK y'all, that's today's
- 10:09episode. Praying that the Lord speaks to
- 10:12your heart that you can continue letting this marinate and just
- 10:18think about these verses and ask God what He wants you to
- 10:22continue learning and understanding.
- 10:25I will see y'all on the next podcast episode.
