2:41
Speaker 2: read alund West, Virginia. Hey doing none, I'm doing well. Thanks,
2:44
Speaker 2: thank you for being here. I got to ask you
2:45
Speaker 2: last time you're on, you were talking about your the big,
2:48
Speaker 2: the big event that you guys were doing at the
2:50
Speaker 2: University of Charleston. How did that go?
2:51
Speaker 4: Rida Peluza?
2:52
Speaker 2: It was great?
2:53
Speaker 4: Thank you, thanks to the sponsors and the ticket buyers
2:56
Speaker 4: and the donors and your listeners. We generated about fifty
2:58
Speaker 4: thousand dollars to fund Read Aloud into the coming year
3:01
Speaker 4: and keep going motivating kids to read for fun.
3:03
Speaker 2: And that's the whole concept behind it.
3:05
Speaker 5: Now.
3:05
Speaker 2: Speaking of which, that's kind of why you're here today
3:08
Speaker 2: to talk about something related to fun reading for fun.
3:11
Speaker 2: School ends in Kanaha County tomorrow. Other counties in our
3:15
Speaker 2: listing area, if they haven't already wrapped up, they will
3:17
Speaker 2: over the next couple of days or so. Co next week.
3:20
Speaker 2: I want to talk to you about summer reading. How
3:23
Speaker 2: important is it for kids and for parents to make
3:25
Speaker 2: sure that parents make sure the kids do it. Oh,
3:30
Speaker 2: great question.
3:31
Speaker 4: Summer reading is one of the best things kids can
3:35
Speaker 4: do to not only maintain their reading skill that they've
3:39
Speaker 4: learned the previous year, but to build vocabulary and background
3:42
Speaker 4: knowledge which will propel them through into success in the
3:46
Speaker 4: coming year. But I really want to emphasize how important
3:51
Speaker 4: it is to let kids read for fun over the summer.
3:55
Speaker 4: Sometimes I get this question from parents. I hope you
3:58
Speaker 4: don't mind my sharing this with you get the question
4:00
Speaker 4: from parents quite often if they're concerned about their students,
4:04
Speaker 4: their kids, how well they're doing in school. They ask
4:06
Speaker 4: me well, what could I be doing? And if it's summertime,
4:09
Speaker 4: if the child has some sort of diagnosis or a
4:11
Speaker 4: learning disability, obviously you follow up on all of those
4:14
Speaker 4: services and get the help you need. But if that
4:17
Speaker 4: isn't the case, and even if it is the case,
4:19
Speaker 4: reading two children and having children have the opportunity to
4:23
Speaker 4: read whatever they want just for fun does more for
4:26
Speaker 4: them than you would imagine. Okay, it's amazing with the
4:29
Speaker 4: data on this.
4:29
Speaker 2: And I was going to say, you know the data,
4:32
Speaker 2: because we've talked about it in the past. What does
4:33
Speaker 2: the data show?
4:35
Speaker 4: So children need to learn about three thousand new words
4:38
Speaker 4: a year. Now you work that out, that's like ten
4:41
Speaker 4: words a day. I don't know about you, but I
4:42
Speaker 4: don't sit down and memorize ten new vocabulary words a day.
4:46
Speaker 4: Maybe in a class when you're studying new biology terms
4:49
Speaker 4: or economic terms, you will focus on certain strange new words.
4:53
Speaker 4: But that is not how we learn words. We learn
4:55
Speaker 4: words by reading things that are of interest to us.
5:00
Speaker 4: And a new word shows up in the context, and
5:02
Speaker 4: maybe we figure it out from the context, maybe we
5:04
Speaker 4: look it up, maybe we ask mom and dad, and
5:07
Speaker 4: then we're using the word, and now the meaning of
5:10
Speaker 4: that word, the relationship how it fits in our language
5:14
Speaker 4: is in the mind somewhere, and when the child encounters
5:17
Speaker 4: that word or that concept later in the social studies
5:21
Speaker 4: text or an English class or in math, they've got
5:24
Speaker 4: something in their mind to attach new knowledge to. So
5:28
Speaker 4: I'm not talking about sitting down with a whiteboard and
5:31
Speaker 4: in a formal instruction situation in the summer. I'm talking
5:35
Speaker 4: about reading Black Panther or Magic school Bus or basketball books,
5:41
Speaker 4: whatever is it of interest to the child.
5:45
Speaker 2: And I think and you've talked about that at Pascain.
5:47
Speaker 2: We're talking with Don Miller from Reading a Loud, West Virginia.
5:50
Speaker 2: You've talked to me about this on and the listeners
5:52
Speaker 2: in the past about reading for fun, and there's nothing
5:56
Speaker 2: wrong with that. I mean, if you I was a kid,
5:59
Speaker 2: if you if you wanted me to sit down and
6:01
Speaker 2: read the Great American Novel, probably not going to happen.
6:05
Speaker 2: But you give me when I was seven eight years old,
6:08
Speaker 2: you give me a book about football or something like that.
6:12
Speaker 2: I'm reading it. You know, I'm reading as much as
6:15
Speaker 2: I can get my hands on.
6:16
Speaker 6: Now.
6:17
Speaker 2: I don't know what other than that, I have a
6:18
Speaker 2: headful of you useless trivia about the NFL that I learned.
6:22
Speaker 2: Then I don't know what I actually took from it.
6:23
Speaker 2: But it's not about what you're reading, from what you're
6:26
Speaker 2: telling me, it's the fact that you are reading something
6:28
Speaker 2: that's right.
6:29
Speaker 4: You took more from it than you know. You learned word,
6:31
Speaker 4: you don't remember learning. You learned how sentences were put together.
6:35
Speaker 4: You develop knowledge that you could then use to make inferences.
6:41
Speaker 4: You can't make inferences or synthesize information, or analyze anything
6:45
Speaker 4: if you don't have knowledge in your mind. I can't
6:48
Speaker 4: ask you about the causes of anything or what would
6:52
Speaker 4: have happened differently in a given historical situation or today,
6:56
Speaker 4: if you don't have background knowledge in your mind. And
7:00
Speaker 4: you get that not by drilling on it until your
7:05
Speaker 4: mind goes numb, but by just chasing your curiosity and
7:08
Speaker 4: reading what appeals to you. And summertime is great for
7:11
Speaker 4: that because you don't have to go to school every day.
7:13
Speaker 2: So what happens though, And I can hear and I'm
7:16
Speaker 2: not a parent, but I can hear parents grandparents, Right,
7:18
Speaker 2: I listened to this point. I don't want to be
7:21
Speaker 2: the bad parent here and say until my kid when
7:24
Speaker 2: all the other kids are out swimming and riding motorcycles
7:27
Speaker 2: and doing all the things that kids do during the summer.
7:29
Speaker 2: I don't want to be the one to tell them, Okay,
7:31
Speaker 2: you need to read something you How do you counter that.
7:34
Speaker 4: That's such a great question, because we don't want to
7:36
Speaker 4: do that either, you know, I don't want to say
7:37
Speaker 4: that either. I don't want to take away swimming or
7:39
Speaker 4: anything else from kids in the summer. And I can't
7:42
Speaker 4: stress this enough. We embrace the sort of RESTful, free
7:47
Speaker 4: summer vibe that we remember from summer vacation when we
7:50
Speaker 4: were kids. We're all about it. I have a couple
7:52
Speaker 4: of suggestions for you. Kids are already curious. They're not
7:56
Speaker 4: swimming at in the last hour before bedtime. You know,
7:59
Speaker 4: maybe there's a half hour an hour before bedtime when
8:02
Speaker 4: it would be good to read. There are rainy days,
8:04
Speaker 4: there is time time. Children spend time waiting, waiting in
8:08
Speaker 4: the car, waiting in line. They spend time when they're
8:12
Speaker 4: tired and they're mentally awake, but their bodies are tired.
8:15
Speaker 4: So there are opportunities in the day to have reading,
8:20
Speaker 4: have books buy you. So really, what adults do is
8:23
Speaker 4: create the environment for it to happen. Maybe open one up.
8:26
Speaker 4: If the habit isn't already established in the home, maybe
8:32
Speaker 4: start to introduce it at the right time. But I
8:35
Speaker 4: would never recommend saying you have to read and you
8:38
Speaker 4: can't go swimming today. That's just that is not fun.
8:41
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, and I think just based on what
8:45
Speaker 2: I read and what people tell me, is some with
8:47
Speaker 2: some kids, we could have a problem with them wanting
8:49
Speaker 2: to go out anyway. So you know that you need
8:51
Speaker 2: to encourage that sort of be well rounded.
8:53
Speaker 5: I guess right.
8:53
Speaker 4: I think the harder thing is to get kids off
8:55
Speaker 4: the screens that they enjoy. It's just you and I
8:57
Speaker 4: were speaking about this, and it isn't just kids. Adults
9:00
Speaker 4: the same problem. I mean, I have to put my
9:02
Speaker 4: phone away and like pay attention to things that are
9:05
Speaker 4: not on the screen. And so adults struggle with us too,
9:08
Speaker 4: And so that's a good example to set. You can
9:11
Speaker 4: make a habit of saying, Okay, I'm gonna turn this
9:16
Speaker 4: screen off, I'm gonna put this phone away, and I'm
9:18
Speaker 4: going to open this book and reading two kids, even
9:21
Speaker 4: kids who can already read reading to them, they still
9:23
Speaker 4: get good benefit from it. It also creates nice time
9:27
Speaker 4: family memories. I mean, there's so many good things about it.
9:29
Speaker 4: But having adults read to kids reading a book that's
9:33
Speaker 4: suitable for the whole family, when pull in the younger
9:35
Speaker 4: ones and the older ones, those can be some really
9:37
Speaker 4: nice summer memories. And if you're interested, I have a
9:39
Speaker 4: couple of techniques that I might just mention for parents.
9:43
Speaker 4: So one of the things we've discovered, we've.
9:45
Speaker 2: Been you actually you turned your microphone off over there.
9:49
Speaker 2: You're good Now. It happens all that. I don't I
9:52
Speaker 2: don't know why, with the desire of the studio, with
9:54
Speaker 2: all as great as it is, why they thought it
9:56
Speaker 2: would be a good idea to put on and off
9:58
Speaker 2: switch is where people put their hands. But it happens
10:01
Speaker 2: more often than you know, you accidentally turned it off.
10:03
Speaker 2: There we go ahead, We're good, You're good, thank you?
10:05
Speaker 5: All right.
10:06
Speaker 2: The techniques is where we work, right.
10:08
Speaker 4: So one of the book distribution methods that we do
10:11
Speaker 4: that we started about two and a half years ago
10:13
Speaker 4: is book bundles. We give a child, we find out
10:15
Speaker 4: what the child's favorite subject is, we give them five
10:18
Speaker 4: books on that subject. Because research says that first of all,
10:22
Speaker 4: they're motivated to read those books and when you read
10:25
Speaker 4: multiple texts on the same subject you're passionate about, you're
10:28
Speaker 4: reading proficiency in that subject not only grows, but it
10:32
Speaker 4: grows faster than if I gave you books all on
10:34
Speaker 4: different subjects or all on books on your reading level.
10:38
Speaker 4: So parents and families can do this at home. You
10:42
Speaker 4: could go to the library and if your kid is
10:44
Speaker 4: interested in sharks, or interested in basketball, or I will
10:48
Speaker 4: just tell you the most popular ones of the kids
10:51
Speaker 4: in West Virginia, basketball, drawing, football, hunting, fishing. You take
10:56
Speaker 4: home a bag of books on that subject and have
10:58
Speaker 4: them around and open in them up and brows through them.
11:02
Speaker 4: You don't have to cover to cover. You just brow
11:05
Speaker 4: the way you read your football books. You read what
11:07
Speaker 4: interests you, and then when you're done with that, go
11:09
Speaker 4: get another one. That's one technique to start with. Bring
11:12
Speaker 4: in the books that interest you, creating a little time
11:15
Speaker 4: to read something together. Start a novel or a book
11:19
Speaker 4: with a good story you can really think your mind
11:22
Speaker 4: into and read it together. That's another good way to
11:25
Speaker 4: get started. It won't be perfect, I say to parents
11:28
Speaker 4: all the time, because people want to beat themselves up. Oh,
11:31
Speaker 4: I should read every day and then as soon as
11:33
Speaker 4: you don't read for that fifteen minutes one day, I failed.
11:36
Speaker 4: I don't look at it like that. Look at the
11:38
Speaker 4: last seven days. Have you read at least four out
11:41
Speaker 4: of the last seven days, Okay, then you're on. You're
11:44
Speaker 4: doing it. You're succeeding because life happens. You know, you don't.
11:48
Speaker 4: Maybe you don't get to it every day. But if
11:50
Speaker 4: you can look back over the last seven days and
11:53
Speaker 4: count up four days and you're doing it, then you're
11:56
Speaker 4: doing it. You're reading more than half the time. The
11:58
Speaker 4: other nice thing about doing it that way is seven
12:00
Speaker 4: day window restarts every day, So if you've had a
12:02
Speaker 4: bad patch you haven't read for the last three days,
12:04
Speaker 4: it's okay, you're still on. You You've got four more days.
12:08
Speaker 2: And don you and I have talked about this before,
12:10
Speaker 2: reading an actual book versus reading a device, because we
12:14
Speaker 2: are constantly in the saying kids and you and I
12:18
Speaker 2: talked off the air. Adults too struggle with devices of
12:22
Speaker 2: all kinds, reading an actual book, magazine, newspaper, whatever, hard
12:26
Speaker 2: copy as opposed to reading on a device.
12:30
Speaker 4: Yeah. So this research is developing and emerging. What we
12:33
Speaker 4: do know the indications for the youngest kids is paper
12:38
Speaker 4: is better. That's that there's nothing that shows the device
12:42
Speaker 4: is better for the youngest ones. I'm talking babies, toddlers, preschoolers,
12:46
Speaker 4: elementary kids. If I can get a book on a
12:50
Speaker 4: device that I can check out from the library electronically,
12:53
Speaker 4: it's better than not having anything at all. It's less
12:56
Speaker 4: clear for adults and older students, and so much of
13:01
Speaker 4: our work requires us to be on the device that
13:03
Speaker 4: it's hard to say you should be doing this on paper.
13:07
Speaker 4: But the for the kids, the indications our paper is better,
13:11
Speaker 4: and I suspect in some years we're going to find
13:15
Speaker 4: that it's going to be better for us too. Something
13:17
Speaker 4: about the distractions. We read differently on screens. And I
13:21
Speaker 4: can tell you with the youngest ones who are still
13:23
Speaker 4: learning how to who are still learning how to write,
13:27
Speaker 4: tapping and swiping does not write in your brain the
13:31
Speaker 4: same way as writing with pencil or I.
13:33
Speaker 2: Just read an article about that not long ago, exactly.
13:36
Speaker 4: So paper and pencil and crayons and paper books are
13:40
Speaker 4: definitely better the younger you are. We're not sure about.
13:43
Speaker 4: I can't say for sure about, but the indications are
13:47
Speaker 4: we're better off when we put the screens away.
13:49
Speaker 2: Textas is Dave. When I was in high school, my
13:50
Speaker 2: mom got readers, digest condensed books, got just enough info
13:54
Speaker 2: to write a decent book report, save behind in many times,
13:57
Speaker 2: well done, well done, you know efficient.
14:00
Speaker 5: That's fish.
14:01
Speaker 2: Don Miller Read Aloud West for Junior. Can people learn
14:04
Speaker 2: more about the programs.
14:05
Speaker 4: Go to our website, which is read aloud wv dot org.
14:09
Speaker 4: If you have a specific question, we're happy I take
14:12
Speaker 4: questions from parents three O four three four five five
14:15
Speaker 4: two one two. Obviously, if you want to volunteer, you
14:18
Speaker 4: can reach us at it either of those places, and
14:20
Speaker 4: you can always email me. D Miller Read.
14:23
Speaker 2: Aloud wv dot org and get out there and start reading.
14:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, for fun reading it. If you and your children
14:31
Speaker 4: aren't enjoying it, yeah, relax, do something else for a minute,
14:35
Speaker 4: come back to it. It's if it's not fun. Uh,
14:38
Speaker 4: you're not doing it right.
14:40
Speaker 2: I'll tell you we've got to go. I'll tell you
14:42
Speaker 2: a quick story about about my about my reading.
14:45
Speaker 5: Uh.
14:46
Speaker 2: When I was in school, in elementary school, I was
14:48
Speaker 2: so bad at art. I mean I cannot draw to
14:51
Speaker 2: this day, I cannot draw anything. There's something about that
14:55
Speaker 2: part of my brain never developed. Okay, Well, actually, many
14:57
Speaker 2: parts of my brain that never developed out of beyond
14:59
Speaker 2: about age fourteen.
15:01
Speaker 5: All right, but.
15:03
Speaker 2: I was so bad at art that the and this
15:05
Speaker 2: is probably not good teaching, but my teachers in elementary school,
15:10
Speaker 2: when it came time to the end of the day
15:11
Speaker 2: when everybody would do art, would just say, David, you know,
15:14
Speaker 2: we're gonna let David.
15:15
Speaker 5: Read a book.
15:16
Speaker 2: And so I would go grab to me that was
15:18
Speaker 2: an encyclopedia. I'd go grab the c encyclopedia and read it. Okay,
15:24
Speaker 2: So to this day I got I can answer ninety
15:27
Speaker 2: five percent of the questions on Jeopardy, but I can't
15:30
Speaker 2: draw stickfick. So so I don't know if that was
15:33
Speaker 2: a good idea or not. But they said, if he'll
15:35
Speaker 2: we'll just let him read, We'll give him a bee.
15:37
Speaker 4: And you enjoyed it.

Speaker 2: One of my favorite books growing up was Me and
18:36
Speaker 2: the Splitter by Gay Lord Perry. I read it over
18:39
Speaker 2: and over again. Although I hated to read as a kid,
18:41
Speaker 2: one of the best things my wife and I did
18:43
Speaker 2: for my kids was let them take books to bed
18:46
Speaker 2: with them and read until they fell asleep. Both of
18:49
Speaker 2: them are now avid readers. Good stuff there. Doug Irwin
18:53
Speaker 2: is here backpack, buts hey.
18:54
Speaker 5: Going man, good morning.
18:55
Speaker 2: Well, since we're talking about reading, what does what does
18:58
Speaker 2: Doug read? Or were you an avid reader as a kid?
19:01
Speaker 5: I wasn't.
19:02
Speaker 11: And listening about going to the class and having the
19:06
Speaker 11: teachers talk to my parents about just picking up something
19:08
Speaker 11: and reading. I was a big into magazines and newspapers.
19:12
Speaker 11: Still read the paper today.
19:13
Speaker 5: And hard copy.
19:14
Speaker 2: Do you read it online?
19:15
Speaker 5: Well, I've switched to Twitch to online and.
19:18
Speaker 2: God blessing late the late Doug scaff when he would
19:21
Speaker 2: come in for an interview and he would sit there
19:23
Speaker 2: and he would say, you still got your paper with you,
19:26
Speaker 2: and he said, you're the one that's keeping us in
19:28
Speaker 2: business because I still get the hard copy of the
19:30
Speaker 2: paper well.
19:31
Speaker 11: And the best thing about being online being able to read.
19:33
Speaker 11: I love uh lived in Pittsburgh a little bit, read
19:36
Speaker 11: the Post, still read the Post Gazette even though they
19:38
Speaker 11: just recently had a transition there. But being able to
19:41
Speaker 11: check in on different sparts to the Steelers and the
19:44
Speaker 11: Inquiry in Cincinnati, to check up on the Reds, and
19:47
Speaker 11: just that love of news and reading, you know, just
19:51
Speaker 11: a voracious reader of news and love papers and magazines.
19:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the same of course here with backpack Buddies.
19:58
Speaker 2: For those that have not heard you on the air
20:00
Speaker 2: with us the last couple of years, explain what the program.
20:03
Speaker 11: Is, what we do our organizations backpackbuddy dot org. We
20:08
Speaker 11: started fourteen years ago, we saw a need in our community.
20:11
Speaker 11: We started in Putnham County and what we've done is
20:15
Speaker 11: that during the school year, we've got a lot of
20:17
Speaker 11: great civic organizations, churches and other groups that provide extra
20:23
Speaker 11: food to kids to take home on the weekend to
20:26
Speaker 11: kind of tied them.
20:27
Speaker 5: Over to get back to school to have Believe.
20:30
Speaker 11: It or not, a lot of our kids their main
20:32
Speaker 11: source of nutrition during the school year is the free
20:35
Speaker 11: and reduced lunch meals that they receive from schools. And
20:40
Speaker 11: we see even in Putnham County Boone County, you know,
20:43
Speaker 11: forty two plus percent of our kids qualify for these programs.
20:48
Speaker 11: And what we've got is the schools, the teachers, the counselors,
20:53
Speaker 11: they see these kids go home and they make sure
20:56
Speaker 11: that they got a little bit of extra to go
20:58
Speaker 11: home on the weekends. So we started talking to some
21:01
Speaker 11: of these teachers and counselors say what are they doing
21:03
Speaker 11: in the summertime? Said, well, we try a couple of
21:04
Speaker 11: different things, and we were not able to really reach
21:07
Speaker 11: the kids to the scope that we uh that we
21:10
Speaker 11: do during the school year. So what we did is
21:12
Speaker 11: we kind of took a step back and said, how
21:15
Speaker 11: do we reach these kids during the school year because
21:18
Speaker 11: you know, they say, well, we've we've set up programs
21:20
Speaker 11: and people come, say hey, come to the school on
21:23
Speaker 11: Tuesdays and we've got stuff for you. Maybe one or
21:25
Speaker 11: two people would come. And why wouldn't people be able
21:28
Speaker 11: to come? Well, parents are working. Parents maybe didn't have
21:31
Speaker 11: transportation and gas you know, you know, you know, you
21:36
Speaker 11: didn't have gas money to come to meet at a
21:38
Speaker 11: central location from because we're rural. Our state is rural,
21:42
Speaker 11: and you know, we've got a lot of kids on
21:44
Speaker 11: we talk about buses, times of kids on buses, so
21:48
Speaker 11: people got to drive these miles. So what we developed
21:50
Speaker 11: was a box and uh, we're able to put together
21:55
Speaker 11: twenty three different items in a box and we actually
21:58
Speaker 11: mail these items to students five times during the school
22:02
Speaker 11: year or during the summertime. So they're getting this support
22:06
Speaker 11: from us every other week during the during the summer.
22:10
Speaker 11: And we've eliminated that transportation that.
22:12
Speaker 5: Logistics delivered directly to It is delivered directly to their home.
22:16
Speaker 11: And what we've done also is that it looks like
22:19
Speaker 11: an Amazon box that doesn't say backpack buddy on it,
22:22
Speaker 11: It doesn't say hey, this is food.
22:24
Speaker 5: It is.
22:26
Speaker 11: Discreete and it's just got and it's mailed to the
22:29
Speaker 11: parents home because the parents sign up for this, and
22:32
Speaker 11: so we mail this to the families five times during summer.
22:36
Speaker 2: So how do the families sign up for this?
22:39
Speaker 5: We work very closely with the school systems.
22:42
Speaker 11: We work with counselors, the central office staffs in the
22:46
Speaker 11: counties that we participate in, and they're they're instrumental in
22:50
Speaker 11: getting these families.
22:51
Speaker 5: Signed up because they know who needs the help.
22:54
Speaker 11: And so, you know, we have a sign up we
22:57
Speaker 11: offer to everybody in the counties that we're in. And
23:00
Speaker 11: but then after you know, everything closes, we go back
23:03
Speaker 11: to the teachers and the counselors and say, hey, these
23:06
Speaker 11: are the folks that signed up. Who's missing, And they
23:09
Speaker 11: really scrub that list and they know.
23:12
Speaker 5: Who to get to participate.
23:13
Speaker 11: They participate during the school year and they call the
23:16
Speaker 11: families and and they get those those families signed up
23:19
Speaker 11: so they can receive the continued support during the summer.
23:22
Speaker 2: Doctor Doug Irwin again from the Backpack Buddies program, and
23:25
Speaker 2: we're gonna bring the Buddies part into it here. Momentarily,
23:28
Speaker 2: do you want to let you know the day of

23:43
Speaker 2: the buddy part of the whole thing, because in order
23:46
Speaker 2: it takes a lot to pull this off. Goes How
23:49
Speaker 2: many boxes are we talking about?
23:50
Speaker 11: Well this summer, for this year, we're gonna be sending
23:53
Speaker 11: out about forty five hundred boxes in Boone and Putnam Counties.
23:59
Speaker 11: And what we do is that what we have call
24:03
Speaker 11: our community Packing Days where we get all of the food.
24:06
Speaker 11: We've got like seventy thousand different items coming for the
24:11
Speaker 11: Putnam County Day. We've got like twenty thousand cans of
24:14
Speaker 11: ravioli on order. And what we do is on.
24:18
Speaker 5: The first Saturday of every year. This year it will be.
24:21
Speaker 11: June sixth, we invite the community to come and help
24:24
Speaker 11: us pack our boxes. And we have everything set up
24:27
Speaker 11: at the Tays Valley Nazarene Church. We have it set
24:30
Speaker 11: up in the parking lot and we start at ten
24:32
Speaker 11: o'clock and we have all the boxes made and we
24:35
Speaker 11: just create a big assembly line and we pack these
24:37
Speaker 11: boxes and we pack them up. But only do we
24:41
Speaker 11: put food in the boxes. Every week we have five
24:44
Speaker 11: shipments going out. But we also put an informational flyer
24:47
Speaker 11: about something in the community going on, for instance, helping
24:52
Speaker 11: folks contact with the Lines Club about if they need glasses.
24:56
Speaker 11: And farmers' markets have different programs for kids to come
25:00
Speaker 11: and shop in the farmers market.
25:02
Speaker 5: So and we library programs.
25:04
Speaker 11: So we always put an informational about about the about
25:08
Speaker 11: the community in the boxes along.
25:10
Speaker 5: With a book. Uh so we do put books.
25:13
Speaker 2: Make Don Miller happy by the ways we.
25:15
Speaker 5: Put books in the boxes as well.
25:17
Speaker 11: So those those go out along with the food in
25:20
Speaker 11: the in the summertime.
25:21
Speaker 2: That's that's good stuff. How many people on your packing
25:24
Speaker 2: day through the years, how many people do you have
25:27
Speaker 2: there on site?
25:28
Speaker 11: We will have three to four hundred people come and
25:31
Speaker 11: I'll tell you it, many hands make light work. And
25:34
Speaker 11: you know, we'll start at ten o'clock and I promise
25:37
Speaker 11: you you'll be done by noon, and you we'll be
25:40
Speaker 11: we'll be starting cleaning up within within within two hours.
25:43
Speaker 11: It's a great time.
25:44
Speaker 5: Uh.
25:45
Speaker 11: We invite all community, all the students to come. We
25:48
Speaker 11: have community service certificates for everybody.
25:50
Speaker 2: Which is important. Kids have to have those to graduate.
25:52
Speaker 11: Absolutely, and teams to come because it's truly teamwork. We've
25:57
Speaker 11: got folks handing out boxes, putting items in the boxes.
26:01
Speaker 5: We've got a job with what we say, we have a.
26:03
Speaker 11: Job for everyone from two to ninety two. Okay, so
26:06
Speaker 11: everybody can participate. And we're in Putnam County at the
26:09
Speaker 11: Tayes Valley Nazarene Church on June the sixth, ten o'clock,
26:13
Speaker 11: but then the following Saturday, if you can't make it
26:15
Speaker 11: on the sixth, on the thirteenth, will be in Madison
26:19
Speaker 11: and at the Madison Civic Center at ten o'clock as well,
26:22
Speaker 11: doing it doing it again for the kids in Boon.
26:25
Speaker 2: County and the people that are volunteering for this. As
26:28
Speaker 2: you said, you have people from church groups that come out,
26:31
Speaker 2: you have people from civic organizations, your rotary and kawanas,
26:34
Speaker 2: things of that nature and all those. But this would
26:37
Speaker 2: be great for businesses too. I mean, you know, little
26:39
Speaker 2: little team building. I know the company that we do
26:41
Speaker 2: a lot of that sort of stuff here. I know
26:43
Speaker 2: the company my wife works were, they're always doing something
26:46
Speaker 2: you know, out of the community as well, so would
26:50
Speaker 2: be great, you know, just to hang out and it's
26:52
Speaker 2: a little fun.
26:53
Speaker 11: Come wear your shirts and come and uh and participate.
26:57
Speaker 11: And but the impact that we that you're making on
27:00
Speaker 11: the community is significant. You know, our mission is one
27:04
Speaker 11: you know, we want to help you know, one family,
27:06
Speaker 11: and but the feedback that we get these boxes are
27:10
Speaker 11: so appreciated during the summer and helping tied families over
27:14
Speaker 11: till till school starts. And you know this this year,
27:19
Speaker 11: this this summer, we will will head another milestone for us.
27:23
Speaker 11: We'll mail our sixty thousandth box since we started. You know,
27:26
Speaker 11: we've supported over since we started, over seventeen thousand kids
27:31
Speaker 11: over our first thirteen years. And that's not possible without
27:35
Speaker 11: incredible community support that we have and you know, folks
27:38
Speaker 11: coming out helping pack the boxes and the donation. So
27:42
Speaker 11: we just can't thank the community enough for allowing us
27:46
Speaker 11: to being a part of for everybody being a part
27:49
Speaker 11: of backpack Buddy to help these kids.
27:51
Speaker 2: And you folks can't see this on the radio, obviously,
27:53
Speaker 2: but every year when I bring Doug in. He always
27:55
Speaker 2: brings a box with him. Is that the same box
27:58
Speaker 2: that you've been bringing all these years? Is that the
28:00
Speaker 2: exact same box or did you do get a new
28:02
Speaker 2: box over yere.
28:03
Speaker 11: We make sure we check the dates on the food
28:06
Speaker 11: and we update. We make sure the food gets that.
28:08
Speaker 2: So how do you get the food? I mean, I
28:10
Speaker 2: know you purchase a lot, but what's the process to
28:13
Speaker 2: get the food?
28:13
Speaker 5: We work with Kroger. We've worked with.
28:15
Speaker 11: Kroger probably the last ten years, and they they place
28:19
Speaker 11: the order for us and we work with them, and
28:21
Speaker 11: they they're very generous with us with with their ordering
28:26
Speaker 11: process and their storage and everything. And so we order
28:30
Speaker 11: everything from Kroger because we've got a certain sized box
28:33
Speaker 11: that that everything has to fit in. And for instance,
28:36
Speaker 11: we'll put six cans of raviol in, three cans of soup,
28:39
Speaker 11: can of fruit and vegetables, some meat, and also ramen noodles,
28:45
Speaker 11: which you know are great packing material but they're also
28:47
Speaker 11: the kid's favorite, and oatmeal and nutri grain bars.
28:50
Speaker 2: Okay, and if people want people can't be there. I
28:54
Speaker 2: know you said the next two Saturday, June sixth, and
28:57
Speaker 2: then you're in Tays Valley at the Nazarene Church and
28:59
Speaker 2: following you, we'll be in Boone County at the Madison
29:01
Speaker 2: Civic Center. If people can't make it on those days
29:04
Speaker 2: but they still want to help out, what can they do?
29:06
Speaker 11: They can go to our website, backpackbuddy dot org and
29:11
Speaker 11: that has all the information. It's got contact information that
29:14
Speaker 11: reach out to me, and we've got some different QR
29:17
Speaker 11: codes on there. If they'd like to make a donation
29:20
Speaker 11: and then also learn more about the program, we'd love
29:23
Speaker 11: to share what we've been able to accomplish. You know,
29:26
Speaker 11: it's certainly not the silver bullet, but we believe that
29:29
Speaker 11: we've got a system and program that really helps people.
29:32
Speaker 11: And if there's other folks in other communities would like
29:35
Speaker 11: to learn more about it, love to talk to them
29:38
Speaker 11: about how the process that we've set up and how
29:42
Speaker 11: it works and how we can maybe help them help
29:45
Speaker 11: their kids in their community.
29:47
Speaker 2: Now, if people want to come on either of those
29:49
Speaker 2: days and to volunteer and be part of that three
29:52
Speaker 2: to four hundred people that you're going to have those
29:54
Speaker 2: two locations, do they need to let you know ahead
29:56
Speaker 2: of time or can they just show up?
29:57
Speaker 5: Just show up and show up. We'll start we'll start
30:00
Speaker 5: right it.
30:01
Speaker 11: We'll start right at ten o'clock on both days and
30:04
Speaker 11: we will have like I said, we've we've got folks
30:07
Speaker 11: that can We have folks tape boxes, we have chairs
30:10
Speaker 11: for folks that if they need to sit down, and
30:13
Speaker 11: they can hand out food and they can take away
30:17
Speaker 11: the take.
30:17
Speaker 5: Away all the extra stuff that we that we produce.
30:20
Speaker 11: So we just love to have folks come out and
30:24
Speaker 11: just and be there with us at ten o'clock.
30:27
Speaker 5: And I promise.
30:27
Speaker 11: You you'll be heading home, but just to give us two
30:30
Speaker 11: hours and the impact that you'll make in some kids'
30:33
Speaker 11: lives will be incredible. All right, and give us the
30:34
Speaker 11: website again, Backpackbuddy dot org. All right, Doug, wish you
30:39
Speaker 11: the best with everything. It's great stuff you're doing up there. Man,
30:41
Speaker 11: Thanks a lot. We appreciate you.
30:42
Speaker 5: Dave.
30:43
Speaker 2: Thank you twenty two minutes away from Tim. Be sure

34:15
Speaker 14: Good morning. How are you.
34:16
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. So what's going on tonight?
34:19
Speaker 14: So we are kicking off our twenty twenty six night
34:22
Speaker 14: markets here at Valley Park. We've had them for the
34:26
Speaker 14: last several years and it's just kind of a way
34:29
Speaker 14: for people to come together in a community and celebrate
34:32
Speaker 14: the summer and just enjoyed evening out with a lot
34:34
Speaker 14: of entertainment and shop. Some vendors grab something to eat
34:37
Speaker 14: from the food trucks, and then we usually have something
34:41
Speaker 14: that some kind of little extra thing, like a little
34:44
Speaker 14: contest or something like that to go along with this theme.
34:47
Speaker 14: We have, like I said, six May through October, and
34:51
Speaker 14: tonight's team is Derby Night, so we will be doing
34:55
Speaker 14: a Derby Hat contest and also stick horse races.
34:59
Speaker 2: Now, when I got the info on this stick horse races,
35:04
Speaker 2: that's exactly what the name implies, reader, right.
35:07
Speaker 14: Yes, that's correct, it's just a little Some people call
35:10
Speaker 14: them hobby horses, people call them stick horses. But you know,
35:14
Speaker 14: you can pick one up I think like pretty much anywhere,
35:17
Speaker 14: or if not, you can. I've seen people take a
35:19
Speaker 14: pool noodle and make one, so anything will work.
35:24
Speaker 2: I love the theme and you're doing because you can't
35:26
Speaker 2: get enough Derby and you know we're still in the
35:27
Speaker 2: month of May and May is Derby month, and I
35:29
Speaker 2: know people go all out for the Derby parties and
35:32
Speaker 2: kind of hang onto that fun a little bit with
35:34
Speaker 2: the Derby hat contest. What does the winner get of
35:36
Speaker 2: either one of these competition?
35:37
Speaker 14: What they get bragging rights and we'll give them the preak,
35:41
Speaker 14: a couple of pool passes for ways of fun, of course,
35:44
Speaker 14: and then we have some awards to give for them.
35:47
Speaker 2: Also talk about some of the vendors that you've got
35:50
Speaker 2: there tonight.
35:51
Speaker 14: So we have Triple B eatery food truck. She has
35:56
Speaker 14: some amazing grilled cheese. My personal favorite is the Pepperoni
36:00
Speaker 14: roll grilled cheese so good. We also have Elbotanas, which
36:05
Speaker 14: is a Mexican food truck if you like Mexican food.
36:08
Speaker 14: And then we have about twenty vendors in total, so
36:13
Speaker 14: everything like crafty vendors, jewelry, that sort of thing, and
36:18
Speaker 14: also like informational boost like from local organizations around the
36:22
Speaker 14: community to kind of spread the word and what they
36:25
Speaker 14: have to offer and what they do in the community.
36:28
Speaker 2: Well, it's going to be a great night. And you
36:30
Speaker 2: do these I guess monthly. You said through October, is.
36:33
Speaker 14: That right, Yes, that's correct, we do it. It's typically
36:37
Speaker 14: the fourth Thursday of the month. I think there's one
36:40
Speaker 14: in September that's like awful week. But you know, we
36:44
Speaker 14: have the dates posted on our Facebook page for all
36:49
Speaker 14: of them, including all the scenes and everything, so we're
36:52
Speaker 14: you know, excited to start them off. It's just kind
36:54
Speaker 14: of like our kickoff to summer. Of course, of the
36:56
Speaker 14: pool opened last weekend, and then this is just kind
37:00
Speaker 14: of something we look forward to. It's pretty laid back,
37:02
Speaker 14: you know, just kind of people hanging out, coming and
37:05
Speaker 14: going and just enjoying being outside for a little bit.
37:08
Speaker 14: And today it's supposed to be nice and funny and
37:10
Speaker 14: it will be a nice evening to get out after
37:12
Speaker 14: all the rain.
37:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You've worked with meteorologist Brian Hughes our Metro
37:17
Speaker 2: and Hews Meteorologists to make sure he's got he's guaranteed
37:20
Speaker 2: you good weather for this event tonight. And as a
37:23
Speaker 2: side note, I'll say that Rob Reel from our sister station,
37:25
Speaker 2: Superstar Country ninety six one KWS is going to be
37:28
Speaker 2: their live and so you got to put up with Rob.
37:31
Speaker 2: You know that, right.
37:33
Speaker 14: I heard that. I was listening to it the other day,
37:35
Speaker 14: so I heard him say he was going to be here.
37:37
Speaker 14: We're excited to have him.
37:38
Speaker 2: No, you're not. You won't be trust me. No, I'm kidding.
37:41
Speaker 2: I'm kidding Rob. Rob's like me, is a good time
37:44
Speaker 2: no matter where he goes, and I want to Rob
37:46
Speaker 2: will be. Let me tell you something about real He
37:48
Speaker 2: probably will be one of those people that if he's
37:51
Speaker 2: not in the stick horse race, he'll probably enter the
37:53
Speaker 2: derby hat competition. He just likes to have fun. He's
37:55
Speaker 2: just walking fun.
37:57
Speaker 14: Well that's good, that's what that's what we're hoping for,
38:00
Speaker 14: to have a good time.
38:01
Speaker 2: Well, i've got you on here. You did mention the
38:03
Speaker 2: pool and everything Waves of Fun. Tell us what's going
38:06
Speaker 2: on there because there may be people, believe it or not,
38:09
Speaker 2: who may have never been there. I mean it's hard
38:11
Speaker 2: to believe because I live right in the middle of
38:13
Speaker 2: Tays Valley and I know how many people go to
38:15
Speaker 2: that think but for people that don't know talk about it.
38:19
Speaker 14: So Waves of Fun is obviously our pool, and it
38:23
Speaker 14: has a wave machine and something new this year. We
38:27
Speaker 14: have it to where we can change how the waves are,
38:30
Speaker 14: so we're kind of doing that this year. That's kind
38:32
Speaker 14: of something new. In the past, they've always just turned
38:35
Speaker 14: them on and they've always been the same type of waves.
38:37
Speaker 14: So there's a variety of that. We opened last weekend
38:40
Speaker 14: from Moral Day weekend, that's just tradition, and then we're
38:43
Speaker 14: closed this week from Tuesday to Friday, and then we
38:46
Speaker 14: open Saturday and we'll be open for the season. Of course,
38:49
Speaker 14: penning weather and all that good stuff. But it is
38:52
Speaker 14: the largest wave pool in southern West Virginia, and it's
38:56
Speaker 14: you know, there's people that drive, I have people that
38:59
Speaker 14: we have people that come here from two hours away.
39:01
Speaker 14: It's just you know, enjoy the way and it's something different.
39:04
Speaker 14: Of course, they don't run the whole time, so people
39:06
Speaker 14: can you know, enjoy swimming and just like the calm water.
39:09
Speaker 14: And then of course the ways are just kind of fun.
39:11
Speaker 14: We rent the tubes, so if you want to just
39:13
Speaker 14: kind of ride on the tube, then you can do that.
39:16
Speaker 14: And a couple of years ago we start you can
39:19
Speaker 14: bring in your own food and drink. We just check
39:21
Speaker 14: everything at the door to make sure you know, no
39:23
Speaker 14: alcohol or glass or anything like that, and it's it's
39:27
Speaker 14: a lot of fun. People really enjoy it, and we
39:30
Speaker 14: are looking to have some events this summer after hours events.
39:34
Speaker 14: Last year we had a summer ween where we played
39:36
Speaker 14: a Halloween movie. I think it was in the end
39:40
Speaker 14: of July or the beginning of August. So we're looking
39:42
Speaker 14: to do some things like that this year. And then
39:44
Speaker 14: we did pool side Pages last year, which was and
39:47
Speaker 14: after hours adults only to where they could just come
39:50
Speaker 14: and float. We didn't turn the ways on for that
39:52
Speaker 14: and read and just enjoy it. I mean there were
39:53
Speaker 14: some people that didn't read. They just enjoyed the nice,
39:55
Speaker 14: calm evening. And so you know, we're looking forward to
39:59
Speaker 14: adding some events some things like that this year also.
40:02
Speaker 2: And let me just throw this in here, as I said,
40:04
Speaker 2: somebody who lives in Tays Valley, if you've not been
40:06
Speaker 2: to Valley Park itself lately, it is one of the
40:09
Speaker 2: busiest spots in the entire Kanaw Valley. I mean just
40:12
Speaker 2: a simple drive through with all the fields and you
40:15
Speaker 2: mentioned with with with the swimming and the wave pools
40:18
Speaker 2: and all that other stuff. In addition to what's always
40:20
Speaker 2: going on at the valley Park Conference Center. You guys
40:23
Speaker 2: always have something going on there. Valley Park is kind
40:25
Speaker 2: of the place to be.
40:28
Speaker 14: Yeah. So last year actually we got numbers in and
40:31
Speaker 14: there was over two hundred and fifty thousand people that
40:33
Speaker 14: visited Valley Park last year, So that's these are huge numbers.
40:39
Speaker 2: And people use the conference Center for a variety of things.
40:41
Speaker 2: I mean, as I said, there's always there's a cupcake
40:44
Speaker 2: festival there. There's always some sort of event I mean
40:48
Speaker 2: pretty much continually going on inside the conference center.
40:52
Speaker 14: Yeah, we have events. I mean of course people go
40:54
Speaker 14: rent it. We do weddings, We do parties. We just
40:58
Speaker 14: came through we kind of graduated parties and then we
41:01
Speaker 14: have our own events here. We yes, there's something going on,
41:05
Speaker 14: Like there's a public event almost at least once a month,
41:08
Speaker 14: even through the winter times. We do public competitions like
41:12
Speaker 14: things to kind of just get people out and get together.
41:14
Speaker 14: We have Majong Night every Thursday evening for people to
41:18
Speaker 14: come in and play or learn to play majong. This
41:21
Speaker 14: was something that somebody had asked, reached out and asked,
41:24
Speaker 14: and we're you know, always welcome ideas. So if anybody
41:28
Speaker 14: has ideas, they can reach out to us and we'll
41:30
Speaker 14: try to make it work. But definitely we're just trying
41:33
Speaker 14: to add more and more stuff for people to have
41:35
Speaker 14: in the community, especially with you know, sometimes people can't
41:39
Speaker 14: go on vacation or whatever, so they kind of come
41:41
Speaker 14: here to like enjoy what we have to offer and
41:44
Speaker 14: you know, whether it be the pool we're just getting outside.
41:46
Speaker 14: Of course, we have the disc golf course which is
41:48
Speaker 14: ranked number one on the East Coast several years in
41:52
Speaker 14: a row. So you know, we we just kind of
41:56
Speaker 14: try to have something for everyone to enjoy, and I
41:58
Speaker 14: think that people do. I never knew how many people
42:00
Speaker 14: were just came to the park to walk or you know,
42:02
Speaker 14: walk and walk their dogs or play, you know, bring
42:05
Speaker 14: their kids to the playground until I started working here,
42:08
Speaker 14: and I was like, wow, I didn't realize. I mean, yeah,
42:11
Speaker 14: how you go to the park, but I just never
42:12
Speaker 14: realized how many people. So it's definitely it's definitely very
42:16
Speaker 14: well used, which is great and that's.
42:17
Speaker 2: What we love to hear. Let's go back to the
42:19
Speaker 2: to the night market again. What time does it start tonight?
42:22
Speaker 14: So it starts at six o'clock and six point thirty
42:25
Speaker 14: is our live entertainment which will be a blue Graph
42:28
Speaker 14: music to go on theme with Derby. It's from Kentucky
42:31
Speaker 14: and the End Crowd is the band that is playing
42:35
Speaker 14: this evening. And also of course a shout out to
42:38
Speaker 14: the Family Wealth Group for being our presenting sponsor for
42:42
Speaker 14: all the night markets this year. And then of course
42:44
Speaker 14: the b v RC Media who is our media sponsor.
42:47
Speaker 14: So we appreciate you guys.
42:49
Speaker 2: As I say, KWS is going to be there tonight,
42:51
Speaker 2: and I understand that, uh just about every time you
42:53
Speaker 2: have one of these will be with one of our
42:54
Speaker 2: different stations will be there. So I'm looking forward to
42:58
Speaker 2: I'll be stopping by tonight. You know, the put and
43:00
Speaker 2: County Chamber of Commerce has got a business after hours,
43:02
Speaker 2: but you can certainly do both things because that starts
43:04
Speaker 2: at five, so you can certainly what That's what I
43:06
Speaker 2: plan on doing is going to the business after hours
43:08
Speaker 2: and then stopping by and seeing you folks tonight. And
43:11
Speaker 2: of course you guys do a great job with your
43:13
Speaker 2: social media. Just go to the Valley Park Facebook page
43:16
Speaker 2: and you can get all the information that you need there.
43:19
Speaker 2: And Rita, I appreciate you being on the show this morning.
43:21
Speaker 2: I'll see you and Justin and everybody tonight.
43:23
Speaker 14: Okay, well, appreciate you having me and we'll see you
43:26
Speaker 14: this evening.
43:26
Speaker 2: All right again, the everything gets underway tonight at six o'clock.
43:30
Speaker 2: And there's no charge for admission. Now, obviously, if you
43:33
Speaker 2: are going to take in, you know, order something off
43:37
Speaker 2: the food trucks and things like that, you're gonna have
43:39
Speaker 2: to pay for it. But other than that, there is
43:40
Speaker 2: no there's no charge for missions. Coming out and enjoy
43:42
Speaker 2: the music and it's gonna be a good time. And
43:45

46:32
Speaker 17: events are held on Thursday nights when a lot of
46:34
Speaker 17: people have to work the next day. Well I can
46:37
Speaker 17: I can answer, I think for the folks at Valley
46:40
Speaker 17: parking for several other folks. I understand what you are saying,
46:43
Speaker 17: and people do have to work. But number one starts
46:45
Speaker 17: at six and it's over in a couple of hours,
46:48
Speaker 17: so it's not like you're going to be there all night.
46:50
Speaker 17: And it's very difficult to plan things on the weekends.
46:54
Speaker 17: And as I mentioned with Valley Park, I don't know
46:58
Speaker 17: how they could pull off something like this as big
47:01
Speaker 17: as this thing is. When all the fields are being used,
47:04
Speaker 17: people are at the wave pool and so on and
47:05
Speaker 17: so forth. It meets mountain trails and everything that's around
47:08
Speaker 17: in that general vicinity. I don't know how they can
47:11
Speaker 17: pull this off on the weekend, to be honest with you,
47:13
Speaker 17: but it is a good point. But people are pulled
47:16
Speaker 17: in eighty five thousand different directions on the weekends. I
47:18
Speaker 17: know I am, and I know you probably are too.
47:21
Speaker 2: But it's a good point. I'll make sure that the
47:24
Speaker 2: folks in Valley Park take that under advisement. Programming note
47:28
Speaker 2: on tomorrow's show, I am gonna have a special guest
47:30
Speaker 2: with me. She's been on before. In fact, she's even
47:32
Speaker 2: substituted for me. Her name is Amy Breedlove Now. Amy
47:35
Speaker 2: is a Charleston native. Used to work here in this
47:38
Speaker 2: building on V one hundred, and she followed her radio
47:41
Speaker 2: dream and now she is one of the top voiceover

Speaker 2: I think she's gonna be in town a lot this summer.
47:50
Speaker 2: She lives out of state, but she's coming back and
47:52
Speaker 2: she's gonna do the show with me tomorrow. And Amy's
47:57
Speaker 2: a fascinating person and a little biased because she's one
47:59
Speaker 2: of my favorite people in the world because she and
48:01
Speaker 2: I went to Marshall at the same time, along with
48:04
Speaker 2: our producer of Metro News Midday, Stephanie Pauley. We were

Speaker 2: all there at the same time. Uh give it, you know.
48:10
Speaker 2: And and well no, actually, will I was gonna say,
48:12
Speaker 2: Dave Wilson was there. Wilson, Well, I forget, We're a
48:14
Speaker 2: lot older than Wilson. This Wilson wasn't there at that time.
48:16
Speaker 2: But anyway, Amy's gonna be with me on the show
