- 0:00Do you have trouble feeling grounded or present?
- 0:04Do you feel disconnected from your life or from your creativity or from others?
- 0:09All of these things are signs that there is a part of ourself that is not fully
- 0:13integrated, that is waiting for us to come collect it and bring it back home.
- 0:28Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You Are Here,
- 0:31a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:35reconnect to yourself and remember the most important thing of all:
- 0:39why you're here. I'm Asia Suler, author, earth Intuitive,
- 0:44teacher, and today I wanted to share a recording,
- 0:49a video that I've never shared before.
- 0:52It's one I recorded before I started the podcast and just never
- 0:57got around to sharing before Remember Why You Are Here came into being.
- 1:02What I'm covering in this video has really been up for me as I
- 1:06start this sabbatical. So if you saw my podcast episode last week,
- 1:11you know that I'm currently on a sabbatical.
- 1:14Starting at the beginning of August,
- 1:15I am in the process of working on my next book,
- 1:19this book that I have been dreaming about creating now for six
- 1:24years.
- 1:24So the idea for this book came in before my first book was
- 1:29published. It was already in the mix. It had already been submitted,
- 1:33and was being worked over.
- 1:35But this book has sort of been sitting now in
- 1:38my unconscious and in this sort of Otherworld.
- 1:42And now I've had this really incredible experience of decided to kind of clear
- 1:47the decks and start working on this.
- 1:50And it's been so cool to see what has come up so
- 1:55far. The good stuff, the hard stuff, the deep stuff.
- 2:01It's amazing to me what a process like writing
- 2:06can bring up.
- 2:06Like just how spiritual this process is,
- 2:11how much spiritual reclamation can happen through just
- 2:15deciding to sit down and start to write.
- 2:18And it's something I've always been aware of with myself,
- 2:21or for a long time I've been aware of,
- 2:23that writing really is a form of channeling.
- 2:26And one way in which I get in touch with my deepest
- 2:30self, my guides, my ancestors, is through writing.
- 2:35And so that's very much at the heart of this project that I'm working on right
- 2:39now as I just begin the sabbatical that is going to last until the end of the
- 2:44year.
- 2:45And so I thought it was the perfect time to share this video that I
- 2:49made that is all about writing as soul retrieval.
- 2:55So in this recording I'm going to talk about what soul retrieval is,
- 2:58if you're with the term,
- 3:00why writing is such a potent tool for engaging in self-led soul
- 3:05retrieval. And then there's going to be a prompt, a question,
- 3:08that will really help you unlock and call home to yourself
- 3:13these pieces of yourself that are ready to come back into the fold.
- 3:18So if you're ready to reconnect to yourself on a deep level,
- 3:22to step back into wholeness,
- 3:25to experience new levels of integration, creativity,
- 3:29and possibility in your life,
- 3:31then sit back and take a listen to this recording called Writing
- 3:36As Soul Retrieval. Parts of us have a tendency to get
- 3:40lost throughout our lives. Whether it's through trauma,
- 3:45hardship, loss, depression,
- 3:49it's normal to feel like we've lost a part of ourselves,
- 3:52like here's a part of ourselves we are not connected to anymore.
- 3:56And yet there's a process called "soul retrieval" that can help us reclaim these
- 4:00parts of ourselves, can help them to come back home.
- 4:04And there's one simple practice that we can use no matter where we are,
- 4:08no matter what we're doing, to help these parts come home.
- 4:12In a shamanic understanding,
- 4:13soul loss is when a part of our essential self steps
- 4:18away. Now, it doesn't mean that a part of us is lost forever.
- 4:22It's like a child hiding in the coat closet.
- 4:24There's a part of us in that moment that departs because it's too
- 4:29scary, it's too overwhelming, it's too much, it's too hard,
- 4:33and it's actually really smart that our soul does this,
- 4:36or that our psyche does this,
- 4:38because normally a part of ourself leaves in that moment because it's just too
- 4:42much for it. We all have sensitive, vulnerable,
- 4:46tender parts of ourselves that if they were exposed to whatever that hardship
- 4:51was, might've been really hurt by that.
- 4:54So this ability to separate, to hide,
- 4:58to be like a child in the coat closet's actually an important part of protecting
- 5:03ourself and protecting our psyche.
- 5:05How do you know if you have some soul loss stuff going on? Well,
- 5:09here's a few things to look for.
- 5:11Do you have trouble feeling grounded or present?
- 5:14Do you feel disconnected from your life or from your creativity or from
- 5:19others? Do you deal with depression, anxiety, or addiction?
- 5:24All of these things are signs that there is a part of ourself that is not fully
- 5:28integrated, that is waiting for us to come collect it and bring it back home.
- 5:34In psychology, this is often called parts work,
- 5:37bringing home these parts of ourselves and reintegrating them.
- 5:41So of course you can work with a psychologist or someone who's a shamanic
- 5:44practitioner to call these parts of the soul back home.
- 5:48But we can also do some powerful work ourselves to ask for these parts to come
- 5:51back home. These parts left because it wasn't safe for them.
- 5:56So for example,
- 5:57maybe you had a teacher when you were young who told you that your artwork
- 6:02wasn't any good, that you were never going to be a true artist. Well,
- 6:05the artist part of yourself might've hid from that, might've ran away.
- 6:10It was just too painful to be around.
- 6:13So your goal as an adult is to invite that artist self back in,
- 6:17invite your creativity back in,
- 6:19to feel like a whole person again because that creativity is intact.
- 6:23And how we do that is by creating a safe space for these parts to come back,
- 6:28to know that they're safe, that they're welcome,
- 6:30and that you are a safe person for them to come back and be engaged with.
- 6:35So what is one way that we can do this? Through writing:
- 6:40writing or journaling is a really powerful yet simple way to
- 6:45create spaces for these parts to come back.
- 6:49Oftentimes we know exactly what parts of ourselves we're missing or we
- 6:54want to integrate more fully,
- 6:56and yet we don't make space or time to communicate with them.
- 6:59So writing is one way that we can really invite these parts back in.
- 7:04You can try writing a letter to this part, or maybe even writing as this part.
- 7:09What does this part of you have to say right now? What are they dealing with?
- 7:13What are they asking of you?
- 7:14What do they need from you in order to feel safe enough to come back?
- 7:18Writing can really help if any of the parts of ourselves that we left behind
- 7:23were also tied to our creativity, our expression,
- 7:27our academic ability.
- 7:29Oftentimes writing gets really wrapped up in our mind with accomplishment,
- 7:34with talent.
- 7:35And so we might have shut down the parts of ourselves that are writers,
- 7:40the parts of ourselves that love to write or love to journal or love to express
- 7:44themselves.
- 7:45If any of these parts of yourselves feel shut down or feel like they're not in
- 7:49their fullest expression, writing, having a practice of journaling,
- 7:53can really help bring those parts back in.
- 7:56I know that poetry was one of my first loves as a child and as a
- 8:01young adult. It was my primary mode of communication and expression and
- 8:06creativity. But at some point in my early twenties,
- 8:09I shut this gateway down.
- 8:11Through a mixture of going through a traditional school setting that seemed to
- 8:14dampen down my creativity,
- 8:16and also coming into greater levels of self-judgment and worry over
- 8:21what my peers would think, I eventually shut this channel down.
- 8:24And it wasn't until I started writing poetry again that I really felt like I
- 8:28became my whole self once more, that I got in touch with these parts of myself.
- 8:33I had shunted away because I thought they weren't good enough.
- 8:36So here's an exercise you can try if you're ready to reconnect with any lost
- 8:40parts of yourself.
- 8:42Get a piece of paper and a pen and set a timer for
- 8:46five to 10 minutes, and then answer this question:
- 8:49who is it you're not allowed to be?
- 8:53And just let yourself write stream of consciousness. See what comes out.
- 8:57I guarantee you,
- 8:57whoever this is that you think you're not allowed to be is a lost part of
- 9:01yourself that your own soul and your own psyche is ready to welcome back
- 9:06home. And the cool thing about welcoming these parts back,
- 9:09is that when we welcome them back, we access their gifts again. Once again,
- 9:14they're able to bring their innate talents, their perspectives,
- 9:18and we can benefit from that. We can then access those talents, skills,
- 9:22and gifts ourselves. And at the end of the day, we become whole people.
- 9:27So if you are loving this idea of writing as a creative practice to
- 9:32bring you deeper in connection with yourself and your gifts,
- 9:36I'd love to see you in my class Writing the Earth's Voice.
- 9:40This is a nature writing workshop that's all online that will help you
- 9:44communicate with the living world and through speaking with the trees,
- 9:49the rivers, the stones, these denizens in nature,
- 9:52you can start to see and understand the nature of yourself,
- 9:55what your wholeness is,
- 9:57and the gifts that you were meant to bring to this world.
- 10:00There's been so much amazing writing that has come out of this workshop.
- 10:03I'm so excited to share it with you.
- 10:05Is there an archetype or persona or person you were in the past that you are
- 10:10ready to invite back in now?
- 10:12Because you deserve the full spectrum of your experience and you
- 10:16deserve to be able to give the full spectrum of your gifts to this world.
- 10:22Even though I recorded this video before I knew I'd be starting this podcast
- 10:27when I did, I really feel like I wrote it for right now in my life.
- 10:31It's exactly what I need to hear. It's exactly what I need to remember.
- 10:35And it really just,
- 10:36it frames this creative project that I'm in so beautifully.
- 10:40And I'm hoping that it's framing the moment of time that you're in
- 10:45beautifully as well. Because these times,
- 10:48these moments when we're ready to bring back pieces of our soul,
- 10:52it's indicative of the fact that we have done so much work,
- 10:57we have gotten to the point now where actually we're ready to welcome back this
- 11:01wholeness. It's a celebration of sorts. So I hope after listening to this,
- 11:05you take some time to celebrate yourself as well as taking some time to try that
- 11:09writing prompt and see what comes up.
- 11:12Even though I'm currently on my sabbatical, my voice notes are still open.
- 11:15So if you would like to leave me a voice note letting me know about your
- 11:18experience, head on over to asiasuler.com/remember.
- 11:22And if you like this episode,
- 11:24I would love it if you gave it a rating, a review,
- 11:28if you just gave it a sprinkling of stars.
- 11:31It really just means so much to me and it's so supportive as I
- 11:35step into this really radical thing that I've never done before,
- 11:39this thing of taking this sabbatical, of taking that leap,
- 11:42taking that risk of stepping away in the ways that I am from all of
- 11:47my ongoing teaching and the running of my programs to just focus on this next
- 11:52book, to be in writing as soul retrieval.
- 11:55So thank you for supporting me in that way.
- 11:58It really just means so much.
- 12:01So may you just continue to come home as you walk through the rest of this week,
- 12:06this month, or even the rest of this year ahead,
- 12:10may the pieces of you that are ready to come home,
- 12:14come all the way back, be welcomed, be reintegrated once more,
- 12:19and as they arrive, may they help you remember the most important thing of all,
- 12:24why you're here.
