- 0:05By discretion. I won' t give my name, but it' s
- 0:10important to mention that I was born in a beautiful sighted town, a small
- 0:14village on the tip of a hill. My grandparents and other brothers lived there,
- 0:17but from a very young age, my parents brought me to live in
- 0:22prayer to study high school. However, it was our custom to visit the
- 0:28village at least twice a year, during the holiday season, specifically during Easter
- 0:33and on the dead day dates. Personally, whenever I visited the village,
- 0:40I liked to play in the middle of the herbs very attached to the hill
- 0:44skirt. In addition, there were rather old stables or stables and they were
- 0:50not in use, which turned into a wooden shed where they built a raised
- 0:56platform that is made under the roof of a house and used to store things
- 1:00or to sleep. On one of those occasions, when it was the days
- 1:04of the deceased faithful, I stayed playing in that place and without realizing it,
- 1:10the hours passed quickly, so the sun was about to hide. So
- 1:15I went back to my grandparents' house and when I got there, one
- 1:19of my uncles came over to talk to me. In that conversation he told
- 1:23me something that made me curious. He told me not to play so late
- 1:27near the sheds, as the witches went out on the very day of the
- 1:32dead and it was very dangerous, since they came down from the hill to
- 1:37do evils and if they did not take the children, they stole the animals,
- 1:42turned off the candlesticks and, if that were not enough, they would
- 1:46throw away the offerings. To be honest far from being frightened by my uncle
- 1:49' s words, they made me arouse a great curiosity, perhaps because at
- 1:55that time I would be about eleven years old and I was not afraid of
- 1:59anything n o n s s. The r NR. I felt it inherited
- 2:00from my grandfather, who was nothing less than a lieutenant of the revolution and
- 2:05told us multiple accounts of encounters with witches. At that moment, I just
- 2:10thought that my uncle, being still quite young, it was natural that he
- 2:15would like to make some kind of joke to scare me, but my grandmother,
- 2:20who was close to us, heard the words my uncle was saying to
- 2:24me and by then the others were already integrated, my grandmother' s face
- 2:30reflected anger to the degree of drawing his attention strongly. He scolded him by
- 2:34saying not to speak ill of witches, as those damned ones feel when they
- 2:38seek or defame them, especially on the day of the dead. My grandfather
- 2:43also told him to shut up and remember what had happened to him years ago.
- 2:47It was better not to play with that and less on the day of
- 2:52the dead, as those witches could come back when they heard. That on
- 2:54my grandfather' s part grew more curiosity inside me to the point of wine.
- 3:00To urge my father to tell me what had happened. I wanted to
- 3:04know what everyone was talking about. My father hesitated for a couple of seconds,
- 3:07but in the end he agreed to tell me that story with a voice
- 3:13full of fear and concern told me the following long before I was born,
- 3:17when he and my uncles were still teenagers. Much of the family visited the
- 3:22village with the intention of taking flowers to the cemetery as the date of the
- 3:27day of death. He even remembered that some friends of Orizaba prepared to arrive.
- 3:34However, at that time the trip took from five to six hours,
- 3:38or perhaps a little longer, depending on the weather conditions and the type of
- 3:42the road from Orizaba, since in the village it was only land and that
- 3:46area was always covered with abundant fog, allowing to see only one or two
- 3:53meters in extreme situations. The journey on the mere day of the dead was
- 4:00obvious catarium, but just on that occasion they wanted to arrive a day earlier
- 4:03than expected and, the worst, unannounced, they left at eleven o'
- 4:08clock in the morning and arrived at about five o' clock, just on
- 4:12thirty- one October, Halloween, when the fog made the town look darker,
- 4:16darker and darker than usual. Grandparents, of course, waited for them
- 4:23the next day, as they were not yet ready to receive them and,
- 4:28above all, thought to receive fewer people from whom they arrived, because only
- 4:31ten people could comfortably sleep in the house. When the family arrived and the
- 4:38friends had a coffee with a bread. Grandma gave them to eat tamales that
- 4:44she would put in the offering and then they began to talk for a long
- 4:49time until eight o' clock in the night. After that, some friends
- 4:55and family went to rest, but the younger ones stayed talking for a couple
- 5:00of hours. Shortly afterwards, my grandfather and one of his brothers sent for
- 5:04him to accompany them to the barn, which was approximately ten meters from the
- 5:10house, but it was enough distance to get lost between mango trees and orange
- 5:15trees. Likewise, the corn they had sown was very high and covered almost
- 5:21everything. When they arrived there, they began to sweep the wooden floor of
- 5:27one of the rooms and put some cots to sleep. When they finally finished
- 5:32sweeping, they returned to the house for their rest. Once my grandfather saw
- 5:38that they had already settled in, he gave them good night and went home
- 5:42to rest. They were already tired, so they immediately fell asleep. However,
- 5:50something frightening was about to begin. Before midnight. A noise woke Grandpa
- 5:56up. It was as if an animal with huge claws spiders to the wood
- 6:00of the barn. That noise caused him great trouble and, above all,
- 6:03concern, and that, of course, made him nervous and from that moment
- 6:09on he could no longer sleep that thing. Or animal hit the wooden walls.
- 6:15My grandfather, thinking he might be a thief, started hitting the wall
- 6:18of his bedroom, but trying not to wake up to the visits that brought
- 6:23two almost newborn babies. This situation was strange. They who slept in the
- 6:29barn did not listen to anything and their father, who was in the house,
- 6:34if he could perceive it, He was very observant and perfectly recognized all
- 6:40kinds of sounds, and that in particular, was not provoked by a person
- 6:44or by any animal in the area. The noise continued. It was such
- 6:48a gloomy sound that my grandfather hit the walls hard making his brothers wake up
- 6:55asking what was going on at the time. The babies got scared and looked
- 6:59innocently into the sky as if something was stalking them. My very nervous grandfather
- 7:05told his brothers to shut up and keep quiet. For a few seconds they
- 7:12obeyed and heard the same noise, although they simply told him that he was
- 7:17an animal that caused that sound and that it came from the barn. The
- 7:21friends who had also woken up at the time told my grandfather to sleep better
- 7:27and not to worry. He was probably a harmless animal and would go the
- 7:31same way he came in. Not an hour passed when Grandpa woke him up
- 7:36again, the same insistent noise was like when the corn was broken. That
- 7:43alerted my grandfather to the point of telling his brothers that it was not possible
- 7:46for them to keep ignoring that the event was happening. I was sure the
- 7:53witches were hanging around and it was because they had sensed the smell of the
- 7:59babies. On the other hand, the noise was heard closer and closer to
- 8:01the house. In spite of that, his brothers, with a great heaviness
- 8:07for the dream they felt, told him that he was only an animal and
- 8:11that he better try to keep calm, but in that they heard how the
- 8:15wood began to crack and the ceiling of the barn, which was made of
- 8:20foil, began to sound like they carved it among themselves. It was then
- 8:22that my father woke up frightened and quickly moved his brothers and cousins, who
- 8:28began to be startled by the sound immediately, took their lamps to light and
- 8:35search for what he had provoked. Such a fuss was an animal and they
- 8:39had to scare him away. From there, as soon as possible, it
- 8:43was heard as if something jumped from the ground to the top of the barn
- 8:48to the point of making the horses and cows nervous. Similarly, the dogs
- 8:50knew that the danger was near and howled as when they saw a dead man,
- 8:56but this time it was not a ghostly entity. They began to get
- 9:01upset as a gnash was heard coming from the top of the barn. With
- 9:07every passing second he was approaching where they were lying. That which he walked
- 9:11was of great weight because it made the wood that bore the sheets crack.
- 9:16Soon they heard something moved between the trees and jumped on the roof. That
- 9:24animal made a strange sound, very similar to when the guajolotes are angry,
- 9:30but in a terrifying tone. This alarm was so intense that he could hear
- 9:33himself to the house where the visitors were. Fear and, at the same
- 9:39time, curiosity caused them to intend to go outside to see if they saw
- 9:43what caused such riots. But when they opened the door, they saw that
- 9:50everything was covered by fog. It was so thick that they couldn' t
- 9:54tell the path that connected the house to the barn. The only thing possible
- 9:58to observe was the glow of the orange lights of the public lighting that were
- 10:03in the village square. Seeing this chilling situation, they went back in,
- 10:09as it caused them great fear to observe that everything was dark. Once inside
- 10:13they sat on their thoughts, thinking that they were possibly playing or trying to
- 10:20scare them away, but they didn' t entirely believe it was true,
- 10:26as babies from the village and other localities were lost years ago. Just in
- 10:30case, several animals amanated without a single drop of blood. The worst is
- 10:35that there were people who saw huge birds roam the sky and among the mountain
- 10:41trails they observed several cats, dogs, blacks and horses. They were the
- 10:46damned witches with the satanic gift of mutating on any animal and the culprits of
- 10:50those acts. My grandfather took his rifle and waited for the witches to demonstrate.
- 10:56The dogs stopped howling and began barking at Anna announcing that the witches were
- 11:00near that night. His cousins, being inhabitants of the city and unaware of
- 11:07many things that happen in the villages, were frightened. They couldn' t
- 11:13react. They thought what stalked them was a dangerous animal. The noises weren
- 11:18' t that loud anymore. It seemed that the witches noticed that they had
- 11:22been discovered and kept silent. In the end they knew it was their fault
- 11:28for making fun of a witch and laughing at her on the day of the
- 11:31dead outside in the middle of the fog. It was heard that other beasts
- 11:35were around. They seemed to be looking for something with insistence. Meanwhile,
- 11:39my grandfather, in the distance, waited for the opportune moment to kill those
- 11:45creatures who arrived without being invited. In a second everything was absolutely silent and
- 11:52only the brush of the leaves of the Milpa was heard when suddenly it was
- 11:56heard that something very heavy fell on the ceiling of the barn. That was
- 12:01huge in size, as everything shook and then fell a second and a third
- 12:07animal. In a nutshell, it was a complete pack of bloodthirsty beasts and
- 12:13they had smelled the babies and looked for them with insistence in the barn.
- 12:18It was because their cousins carried the little ones for several hours and possibly those
- 12:24witches confused their scent thinking they were with us. It was heard as the
- 12:31sheets of the ceiling moved as if sharp claws tried to remove them to enter
- 12:35the door. He staggered as if everything were going to fall due to excess
- 12:39weight, which caused his uncles and grandfather to run wild to help us,
- 12:45carrying with them, machetes, sticks and a lamp. They wanted to run
- 12:52to the house. They were screaming and screaming in fear. My grandfather was
- 12:56very upset because they got in with them and had entered their land without permission,
- 13:01he pointed his gun at the barn and said they had surely mocked the
- 13:05witches and then my father and his frightened cousins said that there was a strange
- 13:11creature in the barn, which was heard eating the stored corn and in turn
- 13:16tore the walls with its huge claws. My grandfather yelled at them saying that
- 13:22he was no beast and it was better not to tell lies. So he
- 13:26ordered us into the house. As they searched the barn in detail, they
- 13:33approached with hand lamps and sticks. They carefully entered the main room of the
- 13:37barn and observed that the farm animals were restless and, above all, frightened.
- 13:43Seeing that there was nothing there, they decided to go up to the
- 13:46top. First one of my grandfather' s brothers went up, while the
- 13:52rest was down as he went up. He heard strange sounds, like when
- 13:58someone was looking for something and without thinking twice he fired a couple of shots,
- 14:03hoping that what caused the scandal would go away, but it didn'
- 14:09t happen like that, without having another alternative, he kept going up,
- 14:15but when he finished going up, he started shooting in despair and at that
- 14:18moment the others went up to see what was going on. They appreciated it
- 14:20with horror to go out in a pack. Many deformed birds had human parts,
- 14:24feathers, and some had a woman’ s face. There was no
- 14:28way to describe these witches. They looked like owls or zopilots. It was
- 14:33as if they were formed by different parts of animals one by one came out
- 14:41of a hole they made in the walls of the barn, immediately getting lost
- 14:46in the thick fog. They were completely stunned. They could not mention any
- 14:50word for the impression after such a chilling scene. They returned home to join
- 14:56the family and wait for the cocksong and the sunrise, but once it arrived
- 15:01the other day everything returned to normal. As usual, my grandfather got up
- 15:05early to go see his milpa. However, he became very upset and argued
- 15:11with Grandma because he could not find his military boots. At about ten in
- 15:16the morning he returned from his grounds and gathered in the small courtyard for breakfast
- 15:22and, of course, to talk about the witches. But when they found
- 15:26out that my grandfather' s boots had been lost, they certainly thought the
- 15:31witches had been the cause. Because of the early morning event, they made
- 15:37the decision to check the barn and see if there was something missing like seeing
- 15:43the conditions in which it was in. Supposedly, by the strong blows of
- 15:46the witches this would be in bad shape. They went to see that he
- 15:52was in order and, to his surprise, everything was as if nothing had
- 15:56happened. The barn was intact, its roof in its onus and the sheets
- 16:00undamaged. The wood was in good condition. My unsettled grandfather went up in
- 16:06the company of one of his brothers to the tapanco, where they saw those
- 16:10witches. It was then that he was paralyzed. His brother asked him what
- 16:15was going on because he had stopped where he was completely ordered as he used
- 16:22to be. But at the center of the tapanco were his boots, which
- 16:26were perfectly tied from the bottom up, just as he liked when the night
- 16:30came and when he was with an entire family, again it was our turn
- 16:36to sleep in the barn, but this time both his uncles and dad decided
- 16:40to sleep with them. Only that they slept on the top, in the
- 16:45tapanco, in the company of a rifle loaded with blessed bullets, a cross
- 16:49and salt My grandfather told my father that most of the night he spent it
- 16:55awake looking up, waiting for those witches to return them. However, they
- 17:02did not return. Some time later, they learned that these witches were familiar
- 17:07with people with whom they had some problems, since envy is never lacking or
- 17:12they do not know how to fix things in a good way and it is
- 17:18easier for them to resort to evil. Instead of talking head- on.
- 17:19Listening to the story my father told me, I couldn' t believe that
- 17:25both he and my grandfather had gone through that experience and now I knew that
- 17:30my uncles didn' t want to scare me, but to protect me.
- 17:33Since that day I know that it is not good to speak of witches on
- 17:36the very day of the dead, since they hear the far away and can
- 17:41become present. I' d like to tell my story because it seems like
- 17:52a way to release all the stress I' ve felt lately, as nights
- 17:57have been heavy Sometimes I can' t even sleep because of fear and my
- 18:02days are a constant of sleep and anxiety. Well, my name is Mauricio
- 18:06and it all started a few years ago, specifically at the elementary school where
- 18:11I was studying. Here, in the state of Puebla. It was very
- 18:14common for us to be given free tickets or with very good discounts for children
- 18:19' s plays. The truth is that I thank my parents, who made
- 18:23the effort to take me to most shows and brought me closer to culture and
- 18:29art from an early age. I loved attending those kinds of events. I
- 18:33was excited about every ticket I got, because that meant an afternoon full of
- 18:40laughter and joy to me. But there was a particular play that I found
- 18:44very difficult to forget. That was a very unfortunate day, as my grandfather
- 18:48was in very poor health and my parents had to go to the hospital,
- 18:52but considering that it was not a place to let children in, they asked
- 18:57a cousin to take me to a play for which we had previously bought tickets.
- 19:04Of course, they would pay him and that cousin of about twenty years
- 19:10accepted the work. It would be in a theater north of the city.
- 19:12But, to my surprise and ignorance of my parents, my cousin' s
- 19:17boyfriend was going to accompany us. We brought only two tickets, but arriving
- 19:22at the theater, they asked how long the show would last and my cousin
- 19:26came alone with me to the theater just to leave me in one place and
- 19:32tell me that she would see me at the end of the show, that
- 19:36I would not get too far away from the door and left me in that
- 19:41theater that was extremely dark, only with a blue light pointing to the center
- 19:42of the stage. I was excited, because it would be a puppet and
- 19:47puppet show, something I enjoyed a lot, but apparently the general public didn
- 19:52' t feel the same way I did. The theater was extremely empty,
- 19:56with no more than fifteen people being in the room that afternoon. I didn
- 20:03' t care about that. After all, it was a family show and
- 20:07it could go wrong. When that blue light suddenly went out and little applause
- 20:11was heard in the room and a sound began to come out of the theater
- 20:17' s speakers. It looked like music, but there was something wrong with
- 20:19it. I thought it was a mistake, as it was playing backwards.
- 20:25It lasted several minutes, as well, several minutes in which nothing happened on
- 20:30the stage. Suddenly and in the face of the discomfort that that meant,
- 20:33one of the assistants, an older man began to boo as demanding that the
- 20:38work begin. From the stage. A cry was heard, a cry that
- 20:44rudely asked the man to shut up at once. That was extremely unusual,
- 20:51but there was no time for anyone to claim, because a figure appeared on
- 20:55the scene, a very beautiful woman and a very delicate physicist, was dressed
- 21:00in fairy. The whole stage remained dark, but the black lights made his
- 21:04dress glow phosphorescent in the dark. I remember perfectly that she told us what
- 21:11the story was going to be about would be the journey of Stephen, a
- 21:15boy who would go through a series of obstacles to save his friend. Of
- 21:18the misfortune, I was really excited, even though I missed my parents.
- 21:25It was always more fun to be with them, plus I felt safer.
- 21:30Anyway, with that introduction appeared Esteban' s puppet, who pretended to be
- 21:34a boy about ten years old, just the same age as I was,
- 21:38and again there seemed to be a problem. The puppet was the figure of
- 21:44an old man, like those rustic puppets that sell in many towns of Mexico
- 21:48or the eggs that dance at festivals. The story, moreover, was strange
- 21:55ernesto. On his way he traveled through churches, schools and a park looking
- 21:59for his friend Javier, But within the fantasy of that staging, Esteban fought
- 22:03with priests with the teachers and even with his friends, trying to reach his
- 22:10destination. It was an uncomfortable play, to say the least if the script
- 22:15seemed to have been written. At the last minute, people began to get
- 22:18out of the annoying show, but what would I do if I was alone
- 22:22there in the theater. Fortunately, a few rows. Right in front of
- 22:27me was a lady with her son. They didn' t leave. They
- 22:32stayed with me in the room until the end, until the climax of the
- 22:36story came, when Esteban found his friend Javier in his own room and he
- 22:41asked him where he had been, and Javier replied that the witches had taken
- 22:45him. Three old women with long, sharp nails had killed him, who
- 22:49had dragged him into hell itself, but who had allowed him to return to
- 22:55the world to take him to him. Esteban then started screaming desperate screamed that
- 23:00he didn' t want to leave. They were heartbreaking screams and at that
- 23:06time, from various points on stage, three puppets of old women came out.
- 23:11There were three witches walking and flying around Stephen. Then more very strange
- 23:17puppets came out, as if they were demons, if you could see puppeteers
- 23:21dressed in black trying to get lost in the darkness of the stage. At
- 23:26this point everything was already very strange and frankly terrifying, at least for a
- 23:30child, as I was in the horn. That reverse music was starting to
- 23:36sound again. At that time, Javier' s puppet told Esteban that they
- 23:41were going to go to Hell together, that the witches would kill him to
- 23:45take him away and so they could be together. But he didn' t
- 23:49do it with the normal voice he' d been using the whole play,
- 23:53his child voice. This time, the voice of that puppet was the voice
- 23:56of a man, a man with a very serious voice. Suddenly a flowery
- 24:02blue door that pretended to be a closet in Esteban' s room was opened
- 24:07and something frightening came out of it. It wasn' t a puppet or
- 24:11a puppet. She was like a woman with a pointed nose and a torn
- 24:15face, with some strands of hair attached to her body and large horns.
- 24:21His enormous yellow eyes also shone with black light. Right now. The lady
- 24:26in front of me, got up in a hurry to get her son out,
- 24:30so she wouldn' t stop crying. I won' t deny it.
- 24:33I was also very upset and screaming. If not bad, I remember
- 24:37getting up and running with that woman who was a stranger, but I asked
- 24:41her to get me out of there while on stage the black light went out
- 24:47and a normal white light was gradually turning on what was there in front of
- 24:52us on stage. They were not puppeteers dressed in black, they were old
- 24:57women completely painted from head to toe. What came out of the closet was
- 25:02also a woman, or at least that' s what I want to believe.
- 25:04He looked like a very thin person, painted also totally black and with
- 25:10long hair strands watered all over his body. It was a very frightening image.
- 25:15The lady who took pity on me took my hand and took me out
- 25:18of there without letting me turn outside. There was no one at the theater
- 25:23reception and no one at the lockers, so there was no one who could
- 25:29complain to that woman. It was only ten minutes before my cousin came back,
- 25:33ten minutes that I ended up waiting alone on the street, as that
- 25:37woman retired soon. From there I felt strange, disturbed and the image of
- 25:42that person with yellow eyes did not come out of my head. My cousin
- 25:47showed up a few minutes before the hour and all I could do was run
- 25:51and hug her and start crying. I don' t even know why.
- 25:55Maybe it was the impression and the stress. I told her what had happened,
- 26:00but she made me promise that I wouldn' t say anything to my
- 26:03parents and that afterwards I would feel better, but that, please, I
- 26:07wouldn' t say anything, but they would scold her. I was so
- 26:11scared and that fear didn' t go away. The following nights I began
- 26:15to experience things at home, things I had never perceived until that moment.
- 26:22Noises at night, light movements in my bed and sometimes I felt like I
- 26:26was being called by my name. They were voices I didn' t know
- 26:30and eventually I had to tell my parents. All that happened one night when
- 26:33I woke up hysterical crying to the seas and fear completely taking over me.
- 26:40I had dreamed of that puppet show. I dreamt I was in that theater
- 26:45watching that same horrible staging. But when those demon puppets began to appear somehow,
- 26:52I stopped being a spectator to place myself in the place of the puppet
- 26:56that starred in the play. At that moment I began to hear many voices,
- 27:03whispering in my ears voices that I did not understand and that seemed to
- 27:07be crying out for something but that I could not understand. Suddenly. Before
- 27:11me was the door of the closet, that door that shone with the black
- 27:15light of the stage and that gradually began to open. From it came a
- 27:21completely black hand with very long fingers and nails, few strands of hair growing
- 27:26all over his arm. I remember feeling my heart like a drum beating my
- 27:32chest and that sensation was what eventually caused me to open my eyes, just
- 27:37when in my dream or nightmare, that demonic being ended up walking out that
- 27:42door of the closet, standing before me. However, just as I opened
- 27:47my eyes to awaken from that horrible dream. In my room, in my
- 27:51royal room, the two doors of the closet were completely open. Even in
- 27:56the darkness of the night. There was something very clear. There an elongated
- 28:00figure protruded a black face that slowly rose and let me see his eyes very
- 28:06large yellow eyes, really it was horrible, and then he pulled out his
- 28:11claws and began to say my name. First it was just the voice of
- 28:15an old woman, but then two more were heard and suddenly those witches started
- 28:21coming out of the closet in my direction. One of them began to laugh
- 28:25and the others announced that they would take me to hell. The tears ran
- 28:30down my face. They were the first thing I could feel before I could
- 28:33even move. I got up hysterical and yelled at my parents without being able
- 28:38to stop crying, even though I was only ten years old. I think
- 28:41that' s when I' ve been closer to having a heart attack.
- 28:45Of course, my parents didn' t believe me, at least not at
- 28:49all, and they ended up telling me it was just a nightmare. A
- 28:53few days later, my mom asked my cousin about what happened and she denied
- 28:57everything, in fact, even invented it that she had tried the play.
- 29:03He told her that since she didn' t want to buy me popcorn,
- 29:07that' s why I was mad at her and had invented that. I
- 29:11was very angry, but I couldn' t convince my parents that she was
- 29:15the one lying. Anyway, the realities that a few of my classmates,
- 29:21their parents, took to those plays, but eventually I ended up meeting a
- 29:26couple of children who had also attended that play on very different dates and their
- 29:30experience was totally different from mine. They had seen an innocent and completely familiar
- 29:37play. I always wondered to myself that if perhaps I had not dreamed,
- 29:42since there was no record of anything like what I had seen, while those
- 29:47nightmares appeared again and again without stopping. It was until my grandmother, during
- 29:53the holidays, when I went to stay at her house, she decided to
- 29:57make me a clean one using white sage and eggs, because she was the
- 30:02only one who believed what had happened to me. He told me that witches
- 30:06often took advantage of such events to take the children and devour them to live
- 30:10longer. My grandmother told me that when I was a child, the witches
- 30:15had taken her sister, who had gone for firewood one very cold night and
- 30:19never came back. She did those cleans to me every day I was with
- 30:25her and eventually I felt better. And even though that horror never left me,
- 30:30the truth is that the nightmares disappeared and I was finally able to go
- 30:34back to sleep peacefully after a little more than three months of physical wear and
- 30:40tear for not being able to rest at all. This happened almost thirty years
- 30:42ago, thirty years ago in which, despite having generally overcome it, the
- 30:47reality is that I am constantly frightened by demonic images or witches, by any
- 30:52strange noise at night or by yellow lights in the dark. Once I almost
- 30:57fell into a nervous breakdown when I visited the countryside and saw two bright lights
- 31:03among the trees, which turned out to be fireflies, although well, I
- 31:10think it' s obvious to say that surely the witches would no longer want
- 31:15to come for an adult, but that doesn' t leave me alone that
- 31:18feeling of being watched all the time is always there. I know you may
- 31:22not want to eat me anymore, but maybe you' ll drag me to
- 31:26hell. Many times I thought that the puppets of Esteban and Javier were actually
- 31:30children that the witches actually took away. But, in time, I'
- 31:37ve improved, I' ve gone to therapy, and I' ve done
- 31:41everything that' s within my reach. I' ve even received hypnosis and
- 31:45I' m better every day. Or, well, every day had been
- 31:48better. I guess after this I told you, it' s contradictory that
- 31:52I like to consume with a lot of terror, but I think I'
- 31:56ve found some pleasure in the release of renalin, although there were times,
- 32:00it doesn' t allow me to sleep. A few days ago, however,
- 32:05they were listening again to some horror stories and just one of those days
- 32:09I put on the TV just when I was lying down to sleep. I
- 32:14ended up falling asleep with the TV on and the automatic playback activated. Honestly,
- 32:21I don' t know how long it would be, but I woke
- 32:24up still at night. The truth is, I didn' t open my
- 32:28eyes right away and I took a moment to try to sleep again. But
- 32:31as I tried to reconcile the dream again, I heard that the stories were
- 32:37over and had been replaced by the sound of voices that seemed to be singing,
- 32:43but seemed to be playing. Reverse. He didn' t even distinguish
- 32:47himself in screams, whispers or simple words, but the fear began to take
- 32:53hold of me At that moment I tried to calm myself, I tried to
- 33:00reach remote control, but I couldn' t feel it in the place where
- 33:02I thought I had left it. I ended up opening my eyes to look
- 33:06for him. Control had fallen out of bed and I picked it up immediately
- 33:08to turn off the TV. But before I could do it just for a
- 33:15second, the screen almost totally black, let me see something strange, something
- 33:20that seemed familiar to me, but terrifying. The static image was that of
- 33:23a room at night poorly lit by a blue light. There was only one
- 33:30wall with what looked like the front door on the left side and the other
- 33:34side with the wardrobe door. The latter was slightly open and on the floor
- 33:39two puppets that looked old were recharged as if they were peeking into the room
- 33:45from inside the closet were handled by strings that were fully visible and hung from
- 33:51a wooden cross. To my horror, I was held by a completely black
- 33:58hand with long nails. Nothing else could be seen, but up almost to
- 34:02the height of the ceiling inside that closet, two yellow lights began to shine.
- 34:09Right now I felt like a flow of adrenaline. He walked all over
- 34:14my body from head to toe, much faster than my ability to react.
- 34:20The next thing I did was turn the TV down right away and I started
- 34:24hyperventilating and crying. After that I heard noise outside the room and then the
- 34:30door opened and there were the three old ladies, with their faces torn and
- 34:35their noses pointed. I cried out with all my might, imploring God to
- 34:39save me. Then one of those old ladies fell over me and scratched my
- 34:44chest with her claws, with a lot of fear, but wanting to live
- 34:49on. I started praying out loud, almost screaming, and then those old
- 34:53ladies disappeared. I was about to fall into a panic attack, but I
- 35:00got up I turned on the lights I took my cell phone and dialed my
- 35:05friends who are getting a lot of light. I didn' t sleep at
- 35:07all that night and the following nights. The nightmares are back and I feel
- 35:12like I' m going crazy. Three nights ago in the living room I
- 35:16saw clearly how a figure ran from my room to the bathroom, a small
- 35:22figure. Many would have thought it was a goblin or ghost children or something,
- 35:27but I' m pretty sure it was one of those puppets that looked
- 35:30old. I don' t hide this anymore. I' ve talked about
- 35:36it with friends and I' ve been recommended to adopt a cat, but
- 35:39the truth is that cats have always caused me a lot of allergy. Despite
- 35:43that, I' m really considering it as a possibility. Maybe it'
- 35:47s better to live morbid all the time in a gripping rather than terrified,
- 35:53and I dreamt of those eyes again last night. I know those old ladies
- 35:58are stalking me and I' m afraid the day will come when they catch
- 36:01me and drag me to hell, because I know that will be my end.
- 36:10I' d like to talk about the worst experience I' ve ever
- 36:14had in my life. I start by saying that the place where I live
- 36:16is a very nice place, in Veracruz, which is surrounded by mountains,
- 36:22It is perfect and beautiful. Nearby there are several very beautiful villages, which
- 36:25are filled with tourists. There you can enjoy real regional tourism yourself. It
- 36:32is we locals who take advantage of every long holiday or vacation to breathe that
- 36:38air. Pure that only those places can give us that was the case when
- 36:44one weekend of the year two thousand six, in the month of December,
- 36:46carnival time, together with my brother Daniel and everyone with our respective girlfriends,
- 36:52we decided to travel to some places near there to spend a few days of
- 36:57rest. We knew from before that the first village chosen would be full of
- 37:02tourists for those dates, which is why we went ahead to communicate with a
- 37:08lady who always rented us a place for every occasion we went. However,
- 37:13the terrifying events that I am going to tell you did not happen there,
- 37:17but in two nearby villages. I prefer not to mention the places not to
- 37:22create their management, since, along with those we were victims, we consider
- 37:27that it is not prudent to do so because of the number of people who
- 37:30visit them and that, therefore, would affect the tourist level they possess.
- 37:34Even so, we think that everyone is sufficiently aware that these kinds of events
- 37:39can occur anywhere in the world and therefore it is necessary to be prudent where
- 37:45one goes to spend his or her days of rest or vacation. We arrived
- 37:52on a Friday morning, settled in the lady' s house and then set
- 37:55out to enjoy the place. It was in the afternoon that we decided to
- 38:00go to another town, as we had organized ourselves like this and would spend
- 38:05several days touring. I must make it clear that this was the first time
- 38:08that we were going to that new town, which forced us to look for
- 38:14accommodation that was available to spend that night and the next. That' s
- 38:17how we got to a lady who rented her apartment for days, but she
- 38:22was on the edge of the place. This really turned out to be positive,
- 38:25since, as in that case the town was not so large, it
- 38:30allowed us to enjoy both the landscapes that surrounded us and the sector where the
- 38:35festivities that the municipality organized for visitors were held. That night we stayed until
- 38:42the early morning, enjoying music and drinks at a bar in the center Then
- 38:47we returned to the apartment. Honestly, I' d like to comment that
- 38:52none of the four of us were alcoholized. This I say because the falcon
- 38:57was not the cause of the first event for bad rules that we suffered happened.
- 39:01When we were already in the apartment. My brother and his girlfriend went
- 39:05to sleep and I too were very tired and that' s why we all
- 39:09fell down when we touched the bed. But something within a few minutes woke
- 39:15us up was the sound of someone walking in the apartment room, but the
- 39:20footprints were strong as if they were doing it on purpose to wake us up.
- 39:25It was someone walking in heels going from one side to the other,
- 39:30like in circles. My girlfriend was the first to notice, and that'
- 39:34s why she woke me up. He told me someone was in the apartment.
- 39:37I tried to reassure her that maybe she was the lady in the apartment
- 39:43who had gone for something, although obviously it wasn' t right. If
- 39:45it had been like that, since when they rent you a place, the
- 39:51owners can' t enter anything like that. But, well, that'
- 39:53s what made the most sense to me, even though I was thinking it
- 39:59was the lady. I must admit, there was something weird going on that
- 40:01night. It was as if the temperature had dropped and there was even fog,
- 40:07but the atmosphere was tense and uncomfortable, as if something was not right.
- 40:10I don' t know how to explain it. I just knew it.
- 40:14I told my girlfriend I' d get up to see, but she
- 40:17said no, that I' d better hope that if it was bad,
- 40:22I tried to reassure her and told her that nothing would happen, although deep
- 40:25down I was afraid, but the moment I was going to put a foot
- 40:30on the floor, someone knocked on the door of the room. It was
- 40:34my brother who asked me if we had heard that too. I said yes
- 40:38and asked him if he had seen anyone in the room, but he told
- 40:43me that he had checked everything and there was no one. Then we realized
- 40:47that maybe she had been the owner and that she was already gone. But
- 40:52when my brother left the room and went to his room, we heard a
- 40:57cry of horror. We went out to see and it was my brother lying
- 41:00on the floor of the living room and a woman dressed in black and with
- 41:05red heels with her teeth on my brother' s head. I was amazed
- 41:08and my girlfriend screamed even louder that made my brother' s girlfriend leave immediately
- 41:12and when she saw that scene the woman in red heels was shocked, she
- 41:16had no hair. His head was full of dry blood and his hands had
- 41:22huge claws. With all the courage I had at the time, I yelled
- 41:28at him to get out of here and a lot of rudeness until from one
- 41:32moment to the next, the woman disappeared. My brother was lying on the
- 41:36floor crying in fear, until the time came when we all cried out of
- 41:39the impression. We had no idea what had happened, but we were scared
- 41:45to death. Together we prayed a prayer and decided to stay the four of
- 41:50us in a single, fourth, the two girls in bed and my brother
- 41:53and I on the floor. For anything, anyway, it was not long
- 41:57before the light of day entered through it the window and surely everything would be
- 42:00better to tell the truth. I couldn' t sleep a bit after that,
- 42:06and I doubt any of them actually did it, because it was an
- 42:09experience that marked us. My brother. His teeth were more like fangs embedded
- 42:15in his head and that was the fervent proof that we weren' t crazy.
- 42:21Anyway, the day came and we tried to forget that horrible event.
- 42:25We went for a walk and to get to know different places where the sale
- 42:30of beer was at its peak. I knew that the atmosphere in those places
- 42:34was getting heavy and for that reason I recommended that we not drink so many
- 42:39beers so that we are in optimal condition to live the day. To the
- 42:44fullest go for a walk to the mountains nearby or better still said that there
- 42:47was a small stream available for those who wanted to take a dip everyone started
- 42:53to give ideas about it. The girls were the ones that were most excited
- 42:59about my girlfriend, who took every opportunity to take pictures with her cell phone
- 43:04gift from her parents on her recent birthday. We spent the whole day from
- 43:10here to there and it was wonderful, so much so that we forgot for
- 43:15a while what had happened the night before. We went to the apartment again
- 43:19and the truth is that at that moment came the memory of what had happened
- 43:22before and we did not like that feeling, although it was already about two
- 43:28o' clock in the morning when we all fell asleep because of how tired
- 43:32we were and as it is the custom that I have to get up In
- 43:37the evenings I had to obey my needs and I got up from bed to
- 43:40go to the bathroom. I remember perfectly that my girlfriend woke up when I
- 43:45got up, I knew what I would do, so she proposed that I
- 43:49take her cell phone to light up on the road, as the bathroom was
- 43:53shared and they were at the end of a hallway, just where the line
- 43:59of apartments was ending up mumbling. I told him not to worry, that
- 44:01I' d get off quickly and come back. After all, I had
- 44:06heard voices in the vicinity, so I assumed there were tourists awake out there.
- 44:12However, it was not so. When I went out and started to
- 44:15tour the place, I realized that there was no one and that' s
- 44:20when I noticed the first strange thing. The voices that were being heard stopped
- 44:23immediately. For my good luck, the men' s room was vacant and
- 44:29when I was about to start doing my needs, those strange voices began to
- 44:35ring again. The women' s bathroom was glued to the men' s
- 44:38bathroom and it' s right through the wall that separated the two, where
- 44:44I heard them were voices of women who were apparently talking to each other.
- 44:46So far nothing seemed bad, until suddenly, the women changed their conversation so
- 44:52that now they begin to turn to someone else and a strong chill enveloped me
- 44:57when I realized that it is they were talking about me. Those voices greeted
- 45:02me and I heard heels walking through the bathroom. They asked me if I
- 45:07wanted to have a good time with them, that I would not regret what
- 45:12caused me that chill. They were not in themselves the words they told me,
- 45:15but the way to do it. Their voices were snoring and at the
- 45:19same time they ended each sentence with a laugh, as if their only intention
- 45:24was to mock me. However, the matter finally went on to a tremendous
- 45:29fear when they turned to me again to repeat the invitation, with the difference
- 45:35that they now added something else that puzzled me. One of them announced that
- 45:39she had enjoyed spending time with my brother the night before. He said his
- 45:45blood was delicious. In fact, he said his name and also mentioned the
- 45:49girl' s name. The situation seemed impossible to me. No one knew
- 45:53our names, we hadn' t even given them to the lady who rented
- 45:58us the apartment. It was in two then that I saw myself in the
- 46:00need to answer them, not to accept the invitation, but rather to reproach
- 46:07them, for I was always a focused man. I asked them who they
- 46:12were to leave me in step. I' d call the police and how
- 46:15it was possible for them to know our names and I warned them I wasn
- 46:19' t afraid of them. And then a laugh roared around and I couldn
- 46:23' t believe what was going on. Suddenly, the women spoke to me
- 46:28again, but at that moment their voices sounded right there inside the men'
- 46:31s room as if they were within walking distance of me, and the heels
- 46:37were rumbling on the floor of the bathroom. The women started talking to me
- 46:40again telling me that they always got what they wanted and what they wanted at
- 46:45the time was me that nothing and no one would stop them. I don
- 46:50' t even know how long it took me to get out of there.
- 46:53The strong character with which I had just responded was now a mute terror.
- 46:59As soon as I opened the door, something appeared out of nowhere and hit
- 47:02my face leaving me numb. It was all like a blink of an eye.
- 47:07Suddenly he was dragged by something he couldn' t see. The only
- 47:13thing my eyes could perceive was like two shadows clinging to my arms, making
- 47:16it impossible for me to escape. I remember having my mouth covered like a
- 47:22hand wouldn' t let me scream, but holding me with the same force
- 47:27they had me in prison with. It was my girlfriend who saved me,
- 47:30because when I heard her voice, pronouncing my name to ask where those two
- 47:36women were, if you can call them that they released me instantly I fell
- 47:42back on the floor, since in those last few seconds it was as if
- 47:45I were suspended a few centimeters, since I did not feel touch the ground
- 47:51with my body. I screamed my girlfriend' s name, but I did
- 47:54it in such a panic that she responded desperate and almost in tears for being
- 47:59scared. So she also swears that she saw nothing, simply that she was
- 48:04frightened to see me lying on the floor calling her terrified. The most disturbing
- 48:09thing was to know that I was almost twenty meters from the bathroom in the
- 48:15dark and on my way to the darkest and most lonely area, being already
- 48:19in the room in the first instance, none of the three told me anything,
- 48:23they only dedicated themselves to listening to me when I told them what had
- 48:30just happened to me with their visibly fearful faces. Even my brother left at
- 48:34a given moment to check the hallway. But the only ones he met were
- 48:37those who occupied the neighboring departments, who, hearing my screams, had gone
- 48:43out to know what had happened in vain. He went to talk to them,
- 48:50since they were as confused as we were. After a few minutes,
- 48:54I convinced them to stay inside the room and never leave again. That night
- 49:00it was hard for me to sleep, as I was trembling with fear until
- 49:04I finally fell asleep. I knew that one of those women was the one
- 49:07who had hurt my brother, and that scared me and gave me a lot
- 49:14of courage at dawn. They asked me what I wanted to do if I
- 49:17stayed or went straight home. I tried to play fort, but I couldn
- 49:22' t hide the fear I still felt that I was transmitting to the two
- 49:27girls. We left that apartment with our things and went straight to the house
- 49:31of the lady who had rented us the place, thinking maybe she could give
- 49:37us an explanation for the nightmare I had just experienced. According to the lady,
- 49:45perhaps it would have been the same tourists who visited the village who,
- 49:49without a doubt, were drunk and who only wanted to make a joke to
- 49:53me. This bearing in mind that I was not robbed of anything I had
- 49:58with me, as well as the fact that I was freed when my girlfriend
- 50:00went out to look for me, but even though I repeated over and over
- 50:06again that the voices belonged to women and that both had no physical body,
- 50:10but appeared to be spirits with shadow forms. They kept quiet as if they
- 50:16didn' t know what to say about it. What caught our attention the
- 50:21most was his reserved attitude, as it seemed to us that he was hiding
- 50:24something from us at noon. We had lunch in the same town and left
- 50:30there on the way. We ran into another town, one that was before
- 50:36we got home beyond the fear I had, the idea was that I was
- 50:39ruining everyone' s stay, which didn' t seem fair to me.
- 50:45So we looked for a place to stay and although I had a hard time
- 50:52convincing them they accepted, we ended up settling in another place, where only
- 50:55on the second and third floors there were apartments, since on the bottom there
- 51:00was a lounge where food was served for tenants. That didn' t make
- 51:06it necessary for us to look much longer. After walking around town, we
- 51:09went back to the apartment for dinner. It also had a terrace that provided
- 51:15a view of the whole place and once we finished eating, we decided to
- 51:20go up for a while. It was only 12 o' clock at night,
- 51:24when all four of us were left on the terrace at once. The
- 51:29girls wanted to get ahead and go to the room to prepare everything for the
- 51:35rest we gave. Only my brother and I didn' t spend much time
- 51:39when everything became horrible and scary. As much as on that occasion we were
- 51:44two who were present. Those apparitions had no mercy for any of them.
- 51:50The body became paralyzed when I began to hear those same voices. I just
- 51:54went on to tell my brother what it was about, as I instantly saw
- 51:59him fall slowly on his back and then be dragged and turned around with intentions
- 52:04of helping him. The fear was indescribable to see that one of those figures
- 52:09was standing right in front of me. Now I could see that he had
- 52:15a face, which represented that of an old woman, whose eyes stood out
- 52:19before the blackness of her figure and her head had no hair at all.
- 52:23Then I realized that it was a witch and there they were both. Again,
- 52:29one imprisoned my brother by keeping him still and silent on the ground,
- 52:35while the other fell upon me to do the same. I' m not
- 52:38going to go into details of what they did to us, and I don
- 52:43' t think there' s a need to clarify anything. I will only
- 52:45tell you that, being in that state of paralysis, I sensed the most
- 52:49shocking and disgusting experience a man can live against his will. The girls didn
- 52:53' t find both unconscious. That' s why we couldn' t do
- 52:59anything for them and then they told us that they barely came to help us
- 53:04and didn' t know anything about what had happened to us. They were
- 53:06attacked by the two fucking witches, but of course not in the same way
- 53:10as us. They were left with their bodies paralyzed and full of scratches and
- 53:16were saved because a couple went up to the terrace alerted by their requests for
- 53:22help. We just wanted the sunrise, which was the schedule of the next
- 53:25bus that would take us home, we were even questioned by the local police,
- 53:31as everyone thought we were attacked by criminals. And once we got home,
- 53:36my mother asked us what had happened to us, as we still had
- 53:40the pale faces because of the immense fear lived. We told them everything by
- 53:46begging her to believe us. Our surprise was great when we told ourselves that
- 53:51he believed us, because in some villages there are such condemned women, but
- 53:57he had never heard the miserable ones do something like that to them, something
- 54:01tourists already in our city. And after about two months of what happened,
- 54:05that' s when my girlfriend decided to end the relationship. By questioning his
- 54:09motive. She told me something she wanted to keep secret until then. According
- 54:15to my girlfriend, while she was attacked by that shadow, she heard a
- 54:21voice that told her that I would never be hers, since she would chase
- 54:24me wherever I went. I mean, even though my brother and I never
- 54:28told them what the witches did to us, my girlfriend was threatened by one
- 54:31of them so she wouldn' t continue with me, she thought nothing would
- 54:37happen, but since she could never overcome the macabre experience, she chose to
- 54:42get away from me directly. The opposite is the case of the bride,
- 54:45of my brother, because today she is already his wife. But it seems
- 54:49that the experience brought drastic and sad consequences, for so far they never managed
- 54:54to have children. If you ask me why this happened to us, we
- 54:59really don' t know. It is a repulsive mystery that, to be
- 55:02honest, neither Brother nor I want to find out. We' re content
- 55:07to know that we' re still alive and even though I still can'
- 55:13t be a worse parent, I still can' t even have a partner.
- 55:15I am well aware that maybe we were at the wrong place and time,
- 55:21simply being victims of what can cause innocent vacation days. My name is
- 55:32Carlos and I would like to tell my life story, mainly from my childhood,
- 55:38because a lot of things happened when I was a kid. Actually,
- 55:42I learned a lot of things. I am not sure how things work for
- 55:45children now so immersed in audiovisual media since childhood, and I am convinced that
- 55:51this tide of information to which they are exposed interferes quite with the imagination that
- 55:55for them should be an endless source of creation of fantastic worlds. At least
- 56:05for my generation, a cardboard box became anything our brain could dream of.
- 56:12Like that, thousands of images were formed in our brain, even though there
- 56:16was nothing just there this ability to create non- existent realities was what led
- 56:22many of us to experience the well- known case of imaginary friends, at
- 56:28least in our early ages. I, for example, had one of these
- 56:34imaginary friends. At first I felt I was even playing with me, but
- 56:40the reality is that I could never see it. I knew I was there,
- 56:44playing games and taking care of myself at all times. However, it
- 56:47was as if those early years his image were totally invisible to me. I
- 56:53could only hear his voice and even feel it near me, but it never
- 56:58appeared. Physically, I remember that voice joking with me, advising me to
- 57:04play games telling me what things were right to do and what not to do.
- 57:07Sometimes I remember talking to me at night until I fell asleep. This
- 57:13kind of imaginary friend appeared when I was about to turn five and it was
- 57:17after turning six that it finally took a visual form. That voice now appeared
- 57:23before me as a fully formed figure. This imaginary friend I was talking to
- 57:30didn' t have the classic look of a child, as they do many
- 57:35times. On the contrary, he had the appearance of an adult man,
- 57:38a man wearing a coffee suit and his face was too thin and made up.
- 57:45At first, I thought it was like a clown like that I used
- 57:49to describe it, but in time I associated his face more with the make
- 57:54- up of Chinese programs that I accidentally came to see at home that way
- 57:59of describing it is not the best way for an imaginary friend. However,
- 58:01I was never afraid and the people I tell this story always start to feel
- 58:06chills only with the description of the physical aspect of this figure. After all,
- 58:14someone with red and white makeup on their face doesn' t sound completely
- 58:19friendly, but I never felt threatened by him. My mother, who knew
- 58:22perfectly well about her existence, didn' t seem scared either. In fact,
- 58:29on many occasions I felt that I was even glad that I played with
- 58:34him and never forbade me to speak with that creation of mine. Unfortunately,
- 58:38life always goes around and when I turned seven, my mother, who was
- 58:44my favorite person in the world, died very suddenly. In spite of this
- 58:49hard fact, I never really was afraid and I didn' t let myself
- 58:53be invaded by such a great sadness, in part because my imaginary friend told
- 58:59me that everything was going to be okay and that my mom was already with
- 59:01him, and that she would never leave me alone, although it was clear
- 59:07that I felt sad because my mother was the only thing I had in the
- 59:13world, apart from my imaginary friend, and she was gone. The loss
- 59:15of a mother at such an early age is always very hard, as at
- 59:19that time it is when it is most needed and sincerely, nothing is ever
- 59:23again the same. For those days without having a father to take refuge in,
- 59:29several family members seemed to throw their balls at each other trying to decide
- 59:34who would be in charge of me. Finally, some aunts decided to take
- 59:37me with them. Maribel, Mercedes and Rocío. They were three of my
- 59:42grandfather' s sisters that I totally didn' t know. They came from
- 59:45Puebla to my mother' s wake and, being single, offered to take
- 59:50me with them and provide me with whatever was necessary. No one in my
- 59:53family refused and I ended up leaving my beloved veracruz to go with them.
- 59:59I am confident that everything would be all right, as my faithful friend had
- 1:00:02said, although since they arrived I had not reappeared before me and hardly seemed
- 1:00:07to have heard his voice a couple of times without having been able to talk
- 1:00:13to him. In Puebla, the aunts had a beautiful old- style house
- 1:00:17that apparently belonged to their parents and they had never left. From there they
- 1:00:22installed me in a huge room and treated me with love and sweetness, at
- 1:00:28least in the beginning. To my surprise. A week after I was in
- 1:00:30my new home, another child arrived at the house, named Emilio, a
- 1:00:36little boy of my own age. A destitute lady had given them to the
- 1:00:40aunts in their inability to take care of him. Emilio and I immediately became
- 1:00:45very friends and settled in the same huge room. We share many talks and
- 1:00:52laughter. It was like having a brother of my own age. Those first
- 1:00:58few months I remember them still as the best days of my life, so
- 1:01:01much so that I did not even notice the absence of my imaginary friend with
- 1:01:06the days the aunts, who had shown themselves generous, began to act strange.
- 1:01:10They became extremely strict and fanatical of religion. Emilio and I were forced
- 1:01:15to pray the daily rosary and were absolutely in control of everything we did.
- 1:01:21Of course, television or radio stopped being an entertainment allowed for us and between
- 1:01:25sticks and punishments we always ended up spending a part of our day locked up
- 1:01:32as penance to something they considered wrong. One night I woke up after hearing
- 1:01:39a noise in my bedroom. I quickly joined my bed right after I opened
- 1:01:45my eyes and could hear horrible laughs that seemed to come from the room.
- 1:01:50My three days seemed to be tickling in a very creepy weird way. So
- 1:01:55to speak. It was at that moment that I felt a little bit of
- 1:02:00soft hands, taking my shoulders and making me lie down again. It was
- 1:02:02my imaginary friend telling me to be very careful and that for the moment I
- 1:02:08could not come to see me, but that I should always try to keep
- 1:02:14myself safe, of course, at that age. I didn' t quite
- 1:02:15understand what he meant, as the message was very rare to me. It
- 1:02:20was then that the aunts seemed to be silent and I heard them take strong
- 1:02:25steps going to our room, closed my eyes as I listened to them,
- 1:02:31opened the door, then turned on the light and entered all three abruptly and
- 1:02:36moored, asking who had been in our room. In my best performance,
- 1:02:39I remember falling asleep while my Aunt Maribel shook me wondering who had been in
- 1:02:45my room. I answered confused and yawning saying I didn' t know what
- 1:02:51I was talking about. The three of them came out in a whirlwind,
- 1:02:54leaving Emilio and me locked in that bedroom. From that night on, all
- 1:03:00three of them changed even more. Since that day. Those three women got
- 1:03:04much harder. They punished us for absolutely all of a few days, even
- 1:03:12reprimanding us just for seeing them in the eyes. In addition, they began
- 1:03:15to make us pray the rosary and read a series of religious books daily without
- 1:03:21fail, and that took us up to two hours of every day in the
- 1:03:25afternoon, leaving us little time for the fun and games a child needs.
- 1:03:30Returning to our very unhappy and stressful life at bedtime, the aunts also began
- 1:03:36to lock us both up, arguing that we were forbidden to leave our rooms,
- 1:03:42which sometimes left Emilio and I to do our needs in a toilet that
- 1:03:45the aunts personally took care of emptying in the morning. However, the punishments
- 1:03:54did not bend us and finally, accompanied by each other was EMI of Ons
- 1:03:59and I were able to endure all the vices for those days, well,
- 1:04:04almost all, because one of the things that at that time filled us with
- 1:04:09terror were neither the reprimands, the blows or the punishments. What really scared
- 1:04:14us were the nights, those nights where we were locked up and where we
- 1:04:17could listen to the aunts, laugh with laughter those horrible laughs, which seemed
- 1:04:24to come from the ground floor, but also from the courtyard. We even
- 1:04:28thought we heard them walking away, laughing like they were leaving the house at
- 1:04:31night. That sound would freeze the blood and put chicken skin in a way
- 1:04:36I couldn' t explain. One night I remember going to sleep and being
- 1:04:42woken up abruptly by hands that covered my mouth tightly preventing me from shouting or
- 1:04:46saying something in front of the startle. It was Emilio' s hands,
- 1:04:51who with a terrified gesture, asked me to keep quiet and so I did.
- 1:04:57Emilio took his hands off my face or I sat her down on my
- 1:05:00bed and I paid attention to the other side of the door a few steps
- 1:05:04were heard anxiously coming and going tirelessly. Suddenly they seemed not only to be
- 1:05:11the feet of one person, but of two and after three who were there
- 1:05:15a few meters from us. Those three people began to laugh in a way
- 1:05:20that seemed like greasy birds I remember how my skin stood that night, Emilio
- 1:05:27was also terrified in some way and unable to explain how I heard the voice
- 1:05:32of my imaginary friend inside my head that told me to be careful, without
- 1:05:38me being able to locate where I came from or where I was. Emilio
- 1:05:44and I began to feel a heaviness that made us fall asleep, despite the
- 1:05:48fear in that dream that night I could see my imaginary friend going to see
- 1:05:54me and telling me again that everything would be fine, that I only had
- 1:05:58to endure a little or more and that soon everything would improve. That dream
- 1:06:02comforted me in a very strange way and I was able to sleep peacefully for
- 1:06:09the next few hours no matter what was going on outside our room. During
- 1:06:14the following nights I continued to wake up from those horrid laughter outside our door.
- 1:06:19But also after doing so, I always felt that heaviness that led me
- 1:06:25to a placid and deep dream, making me care nothing more Exactly a week
- 1:06:30later, the aunts were more anxious and annoyed that they usually looked more demacrated
- 1:06:35than normal and kept saying that they were sick of us, sick of Emilio,
- 1:06:42sick of me, even though we always complied with everything they told us
- 1:06:45and we followed their absurd rules. That night, the last one I spent
- 1:06:54there, everything got out of control in ways that I still find it hard
- 1:06:58to believe. I remember that that day I went to sleep and for some
- 1:07:01reason, the fear that Emilio had towards my aunts that night made him put
- 1:07:06a chair between my bed and the door, preventing it from opening completely.
- 1:07:12We slept together and for the next few hours I had a very strange dream.
- 1:07:16The imaginary friend who visited me found me in a church and told me
- 1:07:21that I should run to that place without stopping carrying what was under the stairs
- 1:07:27at my aunts' house. Then I remember him hugging me very hard.
- 1:07:32That hug was very warm and comforting. While I was in his arms,
- 1:07:39I remember repeating to myself that he would always be with me, that he
- 1:07:43would always take care of me. And before saying goodbye, I remember that
- 1:07:45this imaginary friend reminded me that the Church was the most important place, no
- 1:07:50matter what happened. I was supposed to get there. We were woken up
- 1:07:56by horrible blows and again by those terrifying laughter and turning towards the door,
- 1:08:00Emilio and I saw that those blows were those of the door, crashing violently
- 1:08:04against the chair, that chair that prevented whatever was on the other side could
- 1:08:10not enter our room and at last, as children, Emilio and I began
- 1:08:15to scream terrified, while that which was on the other side of the door
- 1:08:19seemed to put a hand through the crack that remained slowly trying to open it
- 1:08:26a horrible hand skinny and deformed entered through that small opening groping as if trying
- 1:08:33to remove that chair that prevented it from passing. However, by not being
- 1:08:38able to do so, after a few minutes of struggle, that hand withdrew,
- 1:08:43just like the thing or person out there. Emilio and I heard a
- 1:08:48few steps running down the stairs and then something that came out of the house
- 1:08:54screaming and walking away. I told Emilio that I should put on my shoes,
- 1:08:58while I put on mine and once ready I took him by the shoulders
- 1:09:02and told him that it was of the utmost importance that we run towards the
- 1:09:08Church without stopping. I remember shaking when I pulled the chair out of the
- 1:09:12door I opened and ran out with Emilio behind me. He left the house,
- 1:09:15but I was late looking for what my imaginary friend told me was under
- 1:09:19the stairs. I remember it was a lump made by black- colored,
- 1:09:27frayed rags that wrapped elongated things. I did not stop to carry out all
- 1:09:31the work I had to carry that lump in my hands and began to run
- 1:09:35towards the temple of the colony, which was about four blocks away. I
- 1:09:42had to hurry to get there, because Emilio was probably there and besides,
- 1:09:47those squawks were already heard in the distance as if they came after me sniffing
- 1:09:53what I had with me. Despite the early hours, the church door was
- 1:09:57slightly open. I pushed her with my body as I shouted at Emilio to
- 1:10:02help me. The moment the lump touched the floor, horrible screams rang out
- 1:10:08in the distance, as if it were magic a heaviness seized me at that
- 1:10:13moment, making me fall asleep on the floor. Almost immediately the next morning,
- 1:10:18the sacristan gently lifted me from the ground wondering who I was and what
- 1:10:25I was doing there. I clumsily explained to him what had happened and he
- 1:10:29took those rags off the floor, taking them with him to a room inside
- 1:10:33and never told me what my aunts were holding, but Emilio, my partner
- 1:10:40of those weeks, disappeared. I don' t even know how, but
- 1:10:44a few days later I went to get a young woman from Veracruz who also
- 1:10:48claimed to be my aunt and, as I didn' t know much of
- 1:10:51the family, I had to go with her without asking many questions, although
- 1:10:57she died of fear that my luck would repeat itself. It wasn' t
- 1:10:59like that. That woman, my angelic mother, as I called her for
- 1:11:02many years, was my father' s sister. She told me how my
- 1:11:06mother had taken us away from the whole family and how my father had suddenly
- 1:11:12died in circumstances that still cannot be explained today. When we arrived at his
- 1:11:17house in Veracruz, I remember seeing a photo hanging on the wall that made
- 1:11:21me surprise myself to tears. I didn' t say anything and I just
- 1:11:27snuck in while the water came out of my eyes unchecked. My aunt took
- 1:11:30a picture and told me that he was my dad, that he really liked
- 1:11:33the theater and since boys he was always doing street plays for neighbors with his
- 1:11:39friends. In that picture I was already in college in a more professional group.
- 1:11:45He was dressed in a coffee suit and his face was made up with
- 1:11:49black and red lines like in the Chinese opera. Like that imaginary friend who
- 1:11:54had visited me all these years, I never heard from Emilio again. I
- 1:12:00hope he' s okay. In fact, I always thought it was okay,
- 1:12:03that maybe I had just run away, but as an adult, my
- 1:12:09mother Angelica told me one day that, when she came to pick me up
- 1:12:13with that sacristan, he strongly charged her to approach religion. The three aunts
- 1:12:18were not very well known in that colony and, apparently, what I had
- 1:12:23loaded in those rags tonight were, according to the words of that man,
- 1:12:27three pairs of skinny legs and watery gelatinous legs that, when contact with the
- 1:12:32air, when it unwrapped them, crumbled as if they were made of sand.
- 1:12:39She couldn' t see them anymore. But what is true is that
- 1:12:42with my mother Angelica I also began to pray the rosary sometimes and when reading
- 1:12:46the Bible I realized that what my aunts made me read and repeat was not
- 1:12:50in any way the Christian Bible or the traditional rosary. What we repeated over
- 1:12:58and over again were strange prayers to animal gods, gods that sometimes looked like
- 1:13:03dogs or goats and to which we made unintelligible praises that I refuse to repeat
- 1:13:08to this day. They were very strange things and it is clear that they
- 1:13:15were things of the devil, things that at that age made us pronounce and
- 1:13:18that we, in our innocence, did not know what they meant. But
- 1:13:23that' s exactly why I know it didn' t bear fruit in our
- 1:13:27lives, because we didn' t do it with evil. It was the
- 1:13:29worst experience I' ve ever had, although I also lived very good times
- 1:13:33with Emilio and I appreciate that. To this day, my father was always
- 1:13:36with me always took care of me, although I never saw him again as
- 1:13:42an adult, but I know he' s still here, he' ll
- 1:13:45always take care of me, and I' m sure my mother too and
- 1:13:48it' s because of them that I' m here now. Anonymous accounts four
