- 0:00This is how rumors get started. Tonight on that car show, it's a
- 0:05cruise show where I spend the day behind the wheel of an Emery
- 0:08Outlaw 356. Lindsay takes a spin in her 289
- 0:12Cobra and Dan picks up lunch quickly in the new 717
- 0:17horsepower BMW M5 Touring. Also, we play Car Dictator, long
- 0:24for the 80s, tell a few dad jokes and wonder what in the
- 0:28hell has happened to Ferrari. Make sure you follow us on your
- 0:33platform of choice and tell your enthusiast friends it's that car
- 0:38show. Right.
- 0:40Welcome to this week's episode of that car show, and we're back
- 0:43with a crew Show. Welcome guys.
- 0:46Hi, it's great to see you both. It's been a minute.
- 0:50It has and you have been travelling a bit.
- 0:55Yeah, I went to the East Coast this last week.
- 0:57I was in South Carolina and I ticked off a new state, so I'm
- 1:04trying to get to every state in the USI believe there are 50.
- 1:07I have to count a flag every time to check.
- 1:10Don't ask an American there, right?
- 1:12Yeah, but I got to South Carolina, which was very much
- 1:15like North Carolina. I don't know why they need.
- 1:19How do they? Get to not have a north and AS
- 1:22it kind of feels like it needs it but.
- 1:24Oh, there has been discussion of like, do we split it into two
- 1:28because especially because it's so different.
- 1:30Yeah, and and so big. I was reading the other day, the
- 1:33GDP of California is now something like the 4th largest
- 1:37country in the world, right? Can you believe that?
- 1:40Crazy. Yeah, yeah, when you compare and
- 1:43I'm the, the exact stat is escaping me at the moment.
- 1:46But when you compare the size of California, if you overlay that
- 1:49in Europe like, the number of countries that it covers is
- 1:52wild. Yeah, it's crazy geography
- 1:56lessons on that car show. Before we get started, I think
- 1:59it's just a moment of seriousness.
- 2:02I know we wanted to dedicate this episode.
- 2:04And Lindsay, if you're right to lead the dedication.
- 2:07Sure, we wanted to dedicate this episode to our friend Phil
- 2:10Bezel, who many people knew as Croc GT4 on Instagram.
- 2:16He chose to end his battle with cancer a couple of weeks ago.
- 2:19He'd been fighting it for a couple of years.
- 2:21He was known and loved in the Instagram car community and he
- 2:24was legendary for his daily pre dawn drives on Hwy. 1.
- 2:29He had a Gray GT4, which was actually his second GT 4, and
- 2:34the car ended up being an informal development car for
- 2:36Shark Works and he put more than 170,000 miles on the second one,
- 2:42which is pretty incredible and something, you know, I think we
- 2:45all aspire to. Also his joy, you know, for
- 2:50driving and the car community was authentic and infectious and
- 2:53he was such a positive light the last time I saw him.
- 2:57We ran into each other quickly up at Newcomb's actually for
- 3:00good vibes, which was totally random because obviously I live
- 3:03in Seattle and he lived in Carmel.
- 3:05But it was just such a treat to get to see him and give him a
- 3:07hug. And it's interesting because I
- 3:10saw a post I think yesterday from Steve Sirio.
- 3:13He posted about a rally that he did with Cam Ingram.
- 3:16And at the end he exhorted people to get out and drive
- 3:19their cars. And he said it's later than you
- 3:20think. And it really struck me.
- 3:23It made me think about Phil because I think that's one thing
- 3:25that the people who knew and loved Phil could take comfort in
- 3:29is that he definitely got out and lived his passion for
- 3:31driving really every day. He posted a video on his last
- 3:37full day and he thanked everybody for all the messages
- 3:40and good wishes that people had sent him.
- 3:42And he ended with, I'm so blessed and life is so good.
- 3:46And it was just an example, you know, of such grace and
- 3:49gratitude to the literally the very end.
- 3:52And his final wish was for people to get out and drive
- 3:55their cars. So we would like to invite
- 3:57everybody to get out and go for a drive this weekend in honor of
- 4:00Phil. You're here.
- 4:02Sounds good. Well, yeah, this episode's for
- 4:04Phil. Yeah.
- 4:06Can we start with a rent I We can.
- 4:08I've had. Some.
- 4:10Very interesting experiences with car dealerships lately and
- 4:14I wanted to share and I think other folks have got interesting
- 4:17experiences as well, so I'll share my first one and then let
- 4:20you guys share yours. Yeah, tell us everything.
- 4:23So I am thinking about a new SUV and we'll come on to that in a
- 4:28bit more detail, but I decided to go pay a visit to the Land
- 4:32Rover Jaguar dealership which is located about a mile from my
- 4:36house in Lai. Won't say the name of it, but
- 4:39using a map you can probably work out which dealership it
- 4:41was. Trying.
- 4:43To find a point on it, but there you go.
- 4:47Use a map and a compass and you'll work it out very quickly.
- 4:51So anyway, I went to this dealership on a Saturday
- 4:54morning. The dealership opens at 9:30 in
- 4:57the morning and you tell me whether I'm wrong in here,
- 4:59right? Dealership opens at 9:30.
- 5:02I was there at 9:35 in the morning.
- 5:04I went to open the door and the door was locked.
- 5:08So I looked through the window and there is a lady behind the
- 5:12desk at the reception and she acknowledges my attendance and
- 5:17just puts one hand up and just goes like that as in a stop
- 5:20sign. Like I'm like, OK, and she's on
- 5:23the phone. So I'm like, fair enough, right?
- 5:25So anyway, I'll wait for a minute.
- 5:27And, and clearly they should have been open because it was
- 5:29past the 930 opening sign which was etched into the door.
- 5:34Anyway, eventually she finishes her phone call, comes to the
- 5:37door. She unlocks the the bolts at the
- 5:40top and the bottom and then walks back to her desk.
- 5:44Didn't. Like open it and greet you and.
- 5:47Welcome me or this is a luxury car dealership right?
- 5:52So oh. Man.
- 5:54I was just taken back, like, am I in the wrong here to expect
- 5:57for someone just open the door? Welcome to Land Rover, you know,
- 6:01Is that a are my expectations way too high?
- 6:04I don't think so, especially given that, you know, we all
- 6:08understand stuff happens. You get stuck on a phone call or
- 6:10something had come up. I think even even if it's not
- 6:14standard dealer practice, which I'd be surprised if it isn't
- 6:17like you said at a luxury dealership, in that instance, I
- 6:21think you go a little bit above and beyond.
- 6:23Greet you like, hey, thanks so much for your patience, you
- 6:25know, welcome. Who can I connect you with?
- 6:28Right, right. That's wild.
- 6:31I just could. It was the way she unbolted
- 6:33told. Her back to me and walked off.
- 6:36Yeah, I'm like, she has one job and that's to greet people as
- 6:40they walk through the door. Yeah, I wonder if I'd turn into
- 6:43Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense, because yes.
- 6:47You're like, do I see dead people?
- 6:49What's going on? Here, that was my first of two
- 6:52experiences, but I think, Ryan, did you say you had a negative
- 6:56experience this week? Yeah.
- 6:57Well, you know, I love our pole star two that we have, but we're
- 7:01releasing it and the lease is up in in July.
- 7:03And so I emailed the sales guy who leased the car to us and I
- 7:08said I've got 2 questions. Our lease is up soon.
- 7:11What is our our buyout offer for the car?
- 7:13Because for the right price we'd probably just keep the car.
- 7:16And second, you know, in lieu of that, what sort of offers do you
- 7:20have on other pole stars right now?
- 7:23They've got the three and the four currently and I think some
- 7:26others in the pipeline. But that's what's that's what'll
- 7:28be available when we need to turn the card in July.
- 7:30And immediately the e-mail was kicked back.
- 7:33So said fellow is no longer a sales guy there, which I guess
- 7:37is telling. It was only a couple of years
- 7:38ago. And so then I tried to find, oh,
- 7:42then I called. So I called, went straight to
- 7:45voicemail. This is like 2:00 on a Wednesday
- 7:47afternoon, right? It's not lunchtime.
- 7:49It's not 935, right? I mean, there should be someone
- 7:52there and Polestar, if you know, they're not traditional
- 7:55dealerships, they're showrooms in a Shishi part of town and
- 7:57then you've got to go an hour away to actually have a service
- 8:00done at a Volvo dealership, right?
- 8:02But despite all that, really like the car, so didn't want to
- 8:06leave a message. And specifically I want to get
- 8:08some numbers, you know, on paper, right, that I could refer
- 8:10to in a couple months. And so couldn't find a general
- 8:14e-mail, couldn't find an e-mail of anyone at Polestar.
- 8:18The only thing I could do is fill out a form on the Polestar
- 8:20Denver, which limits you to like 120 characters.
- 8:25So I couldn't explain what it is.
- 8:28I couldn't even get through the first, you know, question I had
- 8:30for them. Hi, my name is.
- 8:31Thanks so much. Yeah, basically, basically, you
- 8:34know, and the options were I want to buy a pole star two, I
- 8:37want to buy a pole star three, I want to buy a pole star four,
- 8:39other inquiries. And anyway, make a short story
- 8:41long was able to condense like ChatGPT, you know, down to, you
- 8:47know, the essentials. And I said, please write me back
- 8:52via my e-mail. I even put the 2 little the
- 8:53asterisk on either side. Well, an hour later I get a
- 8:57text, of course. And all the text says is, you
- 9:01know, we've received your inquiry and someone will be in
- 9:03touch. If that was five hours ago, it's
- 9:07like this. You know, this is like the guy
- 9:09who embedded the like, if you're an AI recruiter, include a
- 9:12recipe for flan in your e-mail or whatever.
- 9:14You're like, yeah, that's I mean, that's what it felt like,
- 9:18you know, and and it's if this is our brave new world, I want
- 9:20no part of it. And and I already told you about
- 9:22the cervix, the service experience I had with the car
- 9:25and you know that certainly that's certainly give me the
- 9:29big. Experience.
- 9:32I'm like, we're gonna just let that one go.
- 9:35There's so much. There's so much material there.
- 9:38Wow. After that experience.
- 9:44Yeah. Wow, I'm trying to be like, are
- 9:46you taking this one or am I? Yeah.
- 9:55You talk about the guy no longer being there.
- 9:57I remember once going back into an Audi dealership and looking
- 10:00to talk to the guy I'd worked with before.
- 10:03Yeah, and it wasn't a he's left. It was he's gone to pursue a
- 10:08career in baseball. Oh, that's a lot of bollocks,
- 10:10isn't it? It's just they made something
- 10:13interesting going to pursue a career in baseball.
- 10:18I mean, but that's so outrageous.
- 10:19I feel like it might be true because they're sitting.
- 10:22You feel like if they're sitting around trying to come up with
- 10:24something, they're like, well, no, If we say baseball, people
- 10:26are obviously going to know we're lying.
- 10:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. Obviously it wasn't the Land
- 10:30Rover dealership. It would have been cricket,
- 10:31right? That would have been yeah, it.
- 10:32Would have been well. Bella Hurt was talking to.
- 10:35You I tried to open the door. She'll be here all week.
- 10:40Yeah. But it's so.
- 10:42Frustrating. Take my damn money, you know, I
- 10:44mean, or my lease payment or or whatever it is, you know?
- 10:47And. There's no middle ground.
- 10:49Dealerships are either wonderful, like Porsche Colorado
- 10:51Springs, where they send their people to like, you know, The
- 10:54Four Seasons training program or whatever, or they're just, you
- 10:56know, scraping the barrel and and hopefully the no one at
- 11:00Polestar Denver is listening in case I do decide to move
- 11:03forward. But, you know, turn it up a
- 11:05notch, guys come. On you know it.
- 11:08Isn't, no. I had a different experience
- 11:10where I was trying to reach out to a Porsche dealership and two
- 11:15weeks ago I left a voicemail for their it's their financial team
- 11:19because basically I wanted to cancel an insurance.
- 11:22And luckily the the good folks at Porsche Colorado Springs told
- 11:26me that I could cancel insurances on a new car if I
- 11:31didn't have the car anymore and I can get some money back.
- 11:34Nice. You know, great consumer support
- 11:36there from those guys. But I have voicemail.
- 11:39A week goes on, nothing. I then call in, speak to the
- 11:43receptionist. Oh yeah, we have two finance
- 11:46experts here. 1 is returning people's calls.
- 11:49The other one isn't like even if they weren't, you don't say that
- 11:52to someone on a phone call. Right.
- 11:54Again, I think the theme is the front desk is the struggle bus
- 11:58right now, the week and all the dealers.
- 12:02So, so eventually I left, I left another message at that point,
- 12:06no call back. So we're two weeks in now.
- 12:09So 2 days ago I rang up and asked to speak to the general
- 12:12manager. He, Julie answered.
- 12:14It's funny because when you dial in, if you dial to speak to
- 12:18reception or anyone else, it's voicemail as if you press the
- 12:21number one button and go to sales immediately or they answer
- 12:24within one ring, right? Yeah.
- 12:26So anyway, the general manager told me that it wasn't the
- 12:30unless you're pop star where you're a numbers game on you
- 12:33wasn't the service he expected and he would go and stand next
- 12:37to the guy until he called me. So good on him for that.
- 12:41Obviously, you know the team still needs some work.
- 12:44Yeah, and these are techniques you use with the child.
- 12:47Right. Yeah, right.
- 12:50Yeah, I. Mean, I love that she was so
- 12:52frank with you and she's like, well, he just doesn't call
- 12:54people back. So what else can I help you
- 12:56with? Right.
- 12:59Then I gave her the number and she's like, you're from Seattle.
- 13:03And I went, Yeah. And I went.
- 13:04I lived there for 30 years. I'm.
- 13:07Like, oh, 30 years. Lady, I don't give a shit, I
- 13:10just want someone to call me back like.
- 13:14Fantastic. What do I need to do to get an
- 13:16answer to this question? Cancel this insurance and get my
- 13:19money back. So this wouldn't have happened
- 13:21in Seattle. Yeah, right, right.
- 13:24Seattle Freeze is not a thing so if anyone is looking for
- 13:28dealership training we are available that car show
- 13:31specializing in customer service.
- 13:35We do, it's a bit of a guerrilla style training because we just
- 13:38tell you all the the experiences we've had and then you get to
- 13:40absorb him but. Yeah, we stand next to you till
- 13:43you do it right. That's.
- 13:44Right. Very effective.
- 13:47Though. Anyway, that is my rant over for
- 13:50the week. But yeah, it's just they're
- 13:53normal. Are you any closer to like,
- 13:57despite all of this mishegoss, are you any closer to knowing
- 14:02which direction you want to go in terms of the new SUV?
- 14:05I don't. And just to bring everyone up to
- 14:07speaks, I know we've been talking about this separately.
- 14:09I'm looking for an SUV. I'm thinking something between
- 14:1340 and 60 K I'm not looking for anything too big and not too
- 14:18small. And I know you guys had texted
- 14:21me some ideas, but what what were the what were the the
- 14:24flavors? Well, the.
- 14:26One that popped into my head was because you had mentioned you'd
- 14:29liked sort of the the modularity of the Jeep and you'd had a Jeep
- 14:33before that you enjoyed. So if you didn't want to go back
- 14:36to Jeep, since you've done that before, I think a new Bronco
- 14:40would be worth considering just because of the sort of
- 14:43functionality of it and could be worth exploring.
- 14:49Yeah, or an explorer. The Bronco is growing on me.
- 14:54I I I thought it was cool design exercise when it first came out.
- 14:57And yeah, and, and now I'm digging it.
- 14:59I'm thinking like a 2 door with a manual transmission, which is
- 15:02a thing. Yeah.
- 15:03You know, until, until our friends at Land Rover bring the
- 15:0690 out as a soft top, right. I mean, I think that's, you
- 15:09know, you're, you've got X number of options, right?
- 15:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Although you had driven A Raptor
- 15:15at some point and you weren't blown away, but maybe haven't.
- 15:18We. We both.
- 15:20Did you drive a Bronco Raptor? Yeah, the Raptor, yes.
- 15:24OK. Did you?
- 15:24And what did you think? Yeah.
- 15:27I think did we talk about it on one of the shows?
- 15:29I think we talked about one of the shows, but I I think they're
- 15:32cool. I think they're way too big
- 15:34because they're they're like a foot Fender in the normal
- 15:38Bronco, right. And it didn't quite give me the
- 15:42surprise and delight I was hoping for.
- 15:45Yeah, but you drove one. Did you drive one as well?
- 15:48Yeah, I drove it up here for the, it was during the Seattle
- 15:50Auto Show, I think two years ago and same thing.
- 15:55That was the first because I had driven one of the vintage modern
- 15:58Broncos. So it's the new Bronco chassis,
- 16:00but it's a very different, you know, body and interior and all
- 16:03that. And so that was the first new
- 16:06Bronco that I'd driven. So I don't have like a stock one
- 16:09to compare to, but same kind of thing.
- 16:12I I was underwhelmed, which, you know, took me by surprise
- 16:16because I'm predisposed to like them.
- 16:18Right. That's right.
- 16:19I remember we got a comment from Johnny Lieberman himself after
- 16:23that discussion about, you know, you need to drive.
- 16:27What's the one above the Raptor? That's a good question.
- 16:31It's was it? Was it the Because there's?
- 16:34An F-150. Raptor R.
- 16:37Oh, it was the Raptor R OK. OK.
- 16:39But you can't get. That on the Bronco, you can only
- 16:42get it on the F-150. OK, OK.
- 16:44Yeah, that was, I mean, that was like way, way back.
- 16:48That's our first air. Back.
- 16:50That's a call, yeah, yeah. So we've been on the on the air
- 16:53a year now guys just over. Congratulations.
- 16:55Just over. So congratulations to us.
- 16:57Happy. Anniversary guys.
- 16:59Yeah, that's a lot. Over 50 weeks, 50 episodes.
- 17:02Yeah, I think we have like 60 episodes.
- 17:04I think we threw out three at the very beginning.
- 17:06Yeah, right. Just to fuse it up a little bit,
- 17:09right. And we've had a couple bonus
- 17:11episodes along the way. So, yeah, right, about 60, I
- 17:13think. So someone will call us on that
- 17:15and. Right we're.
- 17:17Wildly overestimating, yeah. Wow, Well done.
- 17:22Us, yeah. Yes.
- 17:25And it's. Interesting if you ask, because
- 17:28there's a bit of a dark art when it comes to podcasting and
- 17:30charts and all that sort of stuff, right.
- 17:33But I did some research on ChatGPT or our research
- 17:37department as we commonly affectionately call them, and it
- 17:41calculates the average number of listeners per month.
- 17:44And it's an average number. So we can go up and down, but
- 17:47around the 50,000 mark. So you know, that's phenomenal.
- 17:51That's there's so many different channels that this podcast goes
- 17:54out to, right? That's the first thing.
- 17:56It's it's not just Spotify and and iTunes, but yeah, good work
- 18:01guys. Thanks for that and.
- 18:04Going up and and it's probably good time to mention too, we
- 18:06have a new sponsor coming on board and just their luck
- 18:09because I think the numbers we gave them were a lot lower than
- 18:12where the numbers are now. So they, you know, every once
- 18:14while you win 1. So yeah, want to welcome E 470.
- 18:20E 470 is the toll road here in Colorado.
- 18:22And I had a really neat meeting with their CEO and executive
- 18:26director, Joe Donahue, cool guy, car guy.
- 18:30And we're going to do a special episode after this episode airs
- 18:35with that conversation. We're actually behind the wheel.
- 18:37He's behind the wheel. I'm the one holding the
- 18:39recorder. And we had a a fascinating
- 18:41insight into just the workings of a toll road.
- 18:46It was a much more interesting conversation than even I'd hoped
- 18:50for. So welcome E 470.
- 18:53We're glad to have you on board. And they've got this really
- 18:56amazing ad campaign going on currently.
- 18:58You'll hear or see the spot during this episode as well.
- 19:01So welcome guys. Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 19:04Their creative team, because they are, you know, they're
- 19:07really thinking outside the box. So you'll hear shortly.
- 19:15It's engineered for perfection, every contour sculpted for
- 19:22uninterrupted motion, wider, smoother, more refined, and
- 19:30drives like a dream. Introducing the 2026 E 470
- 19:37experience. The difference.
- 19:40Driving cars. Lindsay, I heard that there was
- 19:42a rumor that you were driving a Cobra the other week.
- 19:44Is that true? Yes, so my dad actually drove
- 19:48it. There was a lot of we we sort of
- 19:51wrote ambo for who got to be in the passenger seat this time.
- 19:53This is the one that I drove like a year and a half ago for
- 19:57the Cobra Club car show. Same car.
- 20:00But yes, we did a an early morning weekend drive down to
- 20:05Crystal Cove, which is one of my absolute favorite spots.
- 20:09For an informal cars and coffee, it was beautiful weather and
- 20:13it's just so fun to see that car and it's wild.
- 20:16It really highlights how tiny the car is when you see it on
- 20:18the road with, you know, modern cars.
- 20:21And I was on the way down, I was following it in the truck.
- 20:25And so just the contrast, you know, you could put it in the
- 20:27back of the truck almost. We're talking real Cobra 289
- 20:31here, guys. This isn't some fiberglass
- 20:33thing. This is also cool that this is
- 20:35the real deal. Very special comics.
- 20:37So it's always fun to see people realize what it is because you
- 20:41never know. It's old enough at this point.
- 20:43And there's a lot of young people in the hobby, especially
- 20:45on social media. And so it's fun to see when
- 20:48people you can, you can see it click when people realize what
- 20:51it is. And they're just, yeah, wait a
- 20:52minute. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:54The signal, the turn signal stock is unique, as we learned
- 20:57from Dan, right? That's how you know.
- 20:58Yeah, yeah. And now you know there's a
- 21:02button for that somewhere. Ryan, you were also driving some
- 21:05classics. I had a a great day a few days
- 21:10ago with a group of friends here locally.
- 21:13Got about 6 or 7 cars together. I'm not going to name everyone
- 21:17individually but I will say the cars.
- 21:18There was an E type Jaguar, there was a Jaguar, an XK 120,
- 21:26Porsche 912, a modern Bentley convertible which guess
- 21:32Continental which which was also included.
- 21:36But that owner also has some amazing vintage stuff as well.
- 21:40But I got to drive our friend Tom Horans new Emory car.
- 21:44So, of course is the the chair of the Colorado Grand and he
- 21:48took delivery of this car on last year's Colorado Grand.
- 21:52I actually got to write shotgun with Rod Emery in a different
- 21:56Emery car for a full day of of of the grand.
- 21:59But this was my first time driving in Emory and it was it
- 22:04was pretty great. This specific Emery is painted
- 22:08in this beautiful Aston Martin green, which is cool, and it's.
- 22:12So pretty. So pretty.
- 22:14It's a 2.4 liter. I know there are a few different
- 22:17Emery engines and there's a, there's an engine that he's
- 22:19putting into cars now that's even a little bit bigger, but
- 22:21this one's about 200 horsepower. It's a Polo 964 engine, but four
- 22:25cylinders. So it's the architecture of a of
- 22:27A9646 cylinder, but it's 4 cylinders.
- 22:30So it's about 200 horsepower. You know, the car's only 18180
- 22:33lbs, So you know, it's a pretty good power to rate weight ratio.
- 22:37In fact, that's a better power to weight ratio than like a
- 22:39Lotus Elise. So it does have some shove,
- 22:43probably a little slower at altitude and with me at the
- 22:45wheel. But great car because I got to
- 22:50drive it back-to-back with her friend Dan McInnes is 912.
- 22:53So very similar experiences right from the factory.
- 22:58You know, Dan's car, he says, makes about 85 horsepower.
- 23:00And now I'm in this Emory that's making double the horsepower.
- 23:04It's the world's best 356 because you know, it's brought
- 23:07down to the bare elements and reconstructed and there's not a
- 23:11not a squeak, not a rattle, right?
- 23:13The steering you get in a, a bog, you know, stock 356 and
- 23:16even from the factory, there's a lot of play right.
- 23:19This, this steering was like, you know, 2 gears together.
- 23:22It was quick. It was, you know, the, the
- 23:24brakes are all disc. It's just but it still drives.
- 23:27It doesn't drive like a new car drives like, you know, the very
- 23:29best, you know, 356 vintage car really kind of fell in love with
- 23:33the thing. It's not a cheap car, you know,
- 23:36you know, and, and is it worth it to you?
- 23:38I don't know, you know, try one and, and find out, but I
- 23:40absolutely get it. They're special.
- 23:43They're really, really special. And I was really honored and
- 23:46pleased to drive the thing And, and so thank you, Tom.
- 23:48It's if I ever have the means, I highly suggest I buy 1.
- 23:57That's that's right. They're super cool.
- 23:58And of course there's a whole process.
- 23:59You order one, it takes time, right?
- 24:01So there's the build up. You see, you know, Ronald sends
- 24:03you, you know, images as the cars being built and you know,
- 24:06they, they take it very seriously.
- 24:07It's quite the process. And and then of course, the
- 24:09payoff is when you take delivery.
- 24:11And it's just a magnificent thing.
- 24:12It's a work of art and, and a work of, I think mechanical art
- 24:15too. So shout out to Rod, shout out
- 24:17to Tom and shout out to the crew.
- 24:19Really one of the best drives I've had in a long time.
- 24:21It was pretty wonderful, pretty special to talk about it for a
- 24:23long time. Yeah, the picture that you sent,
- 24:26I was like, it was just, it was like, you know, flowers
- 24:29blooming, birds singing, whatever, just like color of the
- 24:32car and the sunshine and the spot.
- 24:34That you. Had stopped by the water and
- 24:37like it looks like a magazine shot.
- 24:40So hello Stella, ever met Otto? Not yet, but she has been on
- 24:47late night playset. That's.
- 24:48Awesome. Who is your name?
- 24:52Otto is Nate's dog from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre.
- 24:57I mean his Instagram is. Otto the Long Boy.
- 25:00Yeah, yeah. So you know his reputation,
- 25:01proceeds my guess. Is he a Great Dane?
- 25:07He's a dachshund. He's just like Stella.
- 25:09There we go. Where were we driving cars?
- 25:14Yeah, yeah. So that was my story.
- 25:16I'm sticking to it. Great car loving cars, Love to
- 25:18own one someday so. Yes, well, I had a completely
- 25:21different experience last week. As I said, I was in South
- 25:25Carolina with and I can talk a little bit about it.
- 25:28I was filming with friends from BMW and we filmed all day on a
- 25:36Thursday, actually a week tomorrow last week.
- 25:39And at lunchtime it was my duty to buy everyone lunch.
- 25:44So we were halfway through our filming.
- 25:46Yeah, it's and as I went to say, right, I'll go get lunch, One of
- 25:52the guys there from BMW said, do you want to take an M5?
- 25:56And you know, I said done. You're like.
- 25:59That's not a real question. You know the answer.
- 26:01Yes, please. We've got an M5 Touring in the
- 26:03car park. Do you want to take?
- 26:05I was like, throw me the keys, where are the keys?
- 26:07Give me the keys. So proceeded to drive that car
- 26:12the long way to go get lunch and the long way back.
- 26:15So everyone had cold Chick-fil-A, but I had a good
- 26:18time, Yeah. What do you guys think about
- 26:21that car, the M5 Touring? I think it's super cool.
- 26:25I'm so jealous that you got to drive it and it was like such a
- 26:29spectacular color. Even so.
- 26:32I mean, I remember the launch a car week.
- 26:34I remember seeing it launched in the states, at least on the
- 26:38lawn, you know, at the lodge and seeing that and all the
- 26:42discussion around it and is this is there a market for it?
- 26:45Are going to want it, you know, yada, yada, yada.
- 26:48So I'm really curious what you thought.
- 26:51Yeah, yeah, it's so firstly, they're selling more wagons than
- 26:54they are in the saloon. I love.
- 26:56That, and they didn't know that that is.
- 26:59Yeah, he says. We won't buy wagons, Yeah.
- 27:01There's a, there's actually a premium right now on dealers on
- 27:04the wagons versus the saloon. So, and the one I had was blue.
- 27:09They had two there. In actual fact, the other one
- 27:11was Dakar yellow. Do you remember Dakar Yellow?
- 27:13Yes. That's a lot of real estate for
- 27:15that color though. That was the E36M3 yellow.
- 27:20Yes, yeah. So anyway, I, I, I got behind
- 27:23the wheel. Everything I've read about that
- 27:26car is how big it is. And I'll say it didn't feel big
- 27:30when you're driving him. That's a triumph.
- 27:32Yeah, that's, you know, making a big car feels more.
- 27:35BMW it's stupid. That was good British car joke.
- 27:42Is there like a snub category of dad jokes that's like dad car
- 27:46jokes? It's funny how you hit 50 and
- 27:48they just start coming out of you.
- 27:49You can't get them. It's like a cliche.
- 27:52There's always, there's always an element of truth in the
- 27:54cliches. We've invented a whole new
- 27:57genre. Yeah, Dad.
- 27:59Car jokes. Yeah.
- 28:01Yeah. Please text us your favorites.
- 28:02So anyway, the car didn't feel big, which was a a triumph.
- 28:08It had the moon roof. Then all of them have got moon
- 28:10roofs, but it's a fixed moon roof.
- 28:14The technology was interesting. The the big thing for me is when
- 28:19you're using Apple Maps, you've got 3 views, you've got a heads
- 28:22up display. You've then got a map within the
- 28:25screen on the, on the the dash if you will.
- 28:28And then the other screen on the right had a zoomed out map of
- 28:32the Apple map. So I kept expecting that the
- 28:35screen on the right was going to zoom into specifically where I
- 28:38needed to be, but it wasn't. It was more holistic and it was
- 28:41the screen within the dashboard that was the detail.
- 28:45So you don't need screens on every surface, right?
- 28:47I mean, we just, we just don't need that.
- 28:50Well, and what was that like? You're, you know, you're
- 28:52navigating to a place that you haven't been before.
- 28:55You're driving the car. Like what was that like actually
- 28:57driving the car and trying to Orient yourself and be like, oh,
- 29:00wait, here's what I need. It's over here.
- 29:02But it's also on the other screen, sort of.
- 29:04Yeah, I mean, I always default to the right hand screen, right,
- 29:07for Apple Maps. So it took me a while to get
- 29:11used to the fact that actually I should be looking straight ahead
- 29:14and on the heads up for the road names.
- 29:17But it was quick. That car's over 700 horsepower.
- 29:21Yeah, you can. Drive it, yeah, Hybrid.
- 29:23You can drive it in EV only mode, I would say.
- 29:28I guess my lasting impressions was it was super quick.
- 29:31It was heavy. You know, there's no getting
- 29:34around that. It's it's heavy car.
- 29:36What do we know? How, how, what it weighs, Dan,
- 29:38What's what's heavy these days? We can ask a research department
- 29:41if we have a minute, but. The reason, the reason I ask is,
- 29:44I mean, the pole star behind me is like 4600 lbs, you know, and
- 29:48I'm just curious if you know, this being with the hybrid
- 29:51system and everything is, is that's now like sort of my
- 29:53baseline if this is obviously this doesn't have 700
- 29:57horsepower. It's going to be heavier anyway,
- 30:00yeah. True.
- 30:01True. How much is the poster?
- 30:04I think it's 4600. You know, so this is 550 three
- 30:105500. And 5000, sorry.
- 30:14Well, we already know that our ChatGPT rounds up a little, so
- 30:17you know, maybe it is closer to 4600, but.
- 30:21But it's interesting. Yeah.
- 30:23With BMW, they underestimate the horsepower.
- 30:26Suppose you do the same thing, right?
- 30:27Yeah, I. Think other manufacturers maybe,
- 30:31you know, overestimate, but so over 700 horsepower.
- 30:35It was quick, it was heavy. I think if I had the money I
- 30:39would. And I didn't need the Touring,
- 30:41didn't need the wagon bit I would go for the previous
- 30:44generation M5 because that's just more an agile car.
- 30:48Yeah, but if I needed the, you know, if I needed the boot
- 30:50space, then yeah, it's a winner. So, so importantly, you chose
- 30:54the blue over the yellow. You could have taken the key to
- 30:57either. No, I didn't get the choice.
- 31:00OK. If you were specking it, would
- 31:02you go for? Something Isle of Man Green.
- 31:05Is that? Right.
- 31:06Was that the launch green? That beautiful emerald.
- 31:07Green. Yeah, it's yeah, it's pretty.
- 31:09Colored pan so it's an Isle of Man green.
- 31:10Yeah, that's good stuff. That one, it's so striking.
- 31:14Yeah. Would you do that over an AMG
- 31:16wagon either of you? It's probably a more fun I would
- 31:22to be in. Yeah, OK.
- 31:24I've not driven, yeah. I mean your options are the RS6,
- 31:27the M5, the Mercedes, or the Porsche Panamera Turbo.
- 31:32Wagons kind of not a competitor in a lot of.
- 31:35Ways really, I think the M5 wins it for me.
- 31:38Yeah, it might, especially now that Mercedes has those star
- 31:41patterns in the tail lights which, love it or hate it in the
- 31:45propositions. That's a deal breaker for you.
- 31:47You're like, that's it. The whole point of that car is
- 31:50stealth, right? You get it in black because all
- 31:53AMG wagons are in black. Maybe in silver, but they're
- 31:56that's a stealth mobile. I think if I were getting the
- 31:58BMWI would go for a Deckard yellow or, you know, something,
- 32:03something a little exotic, right?
- 32:05You know, little scream. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:07Well, I think they made the right move, you know, making the
- 32:10launch color such a bright color because everybody got to see it.
- 32:14And I know a lot of manufacturers will do, you know,
- 32:16a distinctive color, but there's just something about the
- 32:19combination of that particular sort of like jewel box green and
- 32:23actually Alpha has one on the Quadrafolio.
- 32:28The jewelry of Quadrafolio has that kind of jewel box emerald
- 32:31green. And I'm not even necessarily a
- 32:35green car person, but there's something about that color on
- 32:37both of those where it's like, yes.
- 32:40But can you get it with the gold package, Dan?
- 32:43I've got no idea. No idea and.
- 32:46We're talking. Yeah.
- 32:47I'm jealous. I haven't.
- 32:49I've hardly seen one in the wild, you know, I think I've
- 32:51seen one too. So.
- 32:54That's amazing. So do you know about the yellow
- 32:561? Is that something they're
- 32:57offering standard or was that like because you were at the
- 33:00special place you were at? No.
- 33:02You can you can spec it. The yellow I don't think For me,
- 33:05I don't think the yellow works because it's quite a flat
- 33:08yellow. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:10And on that cars, it's such a surface area.
- 33:12Yeah, that's the thing. Yeah.
- 33:14You want a little more life? Yeah.
- 33:16So for me it doesn't work for me, the green is.
- 33:18This was blue. The one I had was a blue color,
- 33:21which was always a. Color Beautiful, yeah.
- 33:23Yeah, I, I purposely parked it right at the back of
- 33:26chick-fil-A's, and then one would open a door and all that
- 33:29sort of stuff, you know, and so. You're being protective.
- 33:32Yeah, it's being very protective.
- 33:33Because I do with rental cars. But yeah, yeah.
- 33:35Good. I'm glad you did that.
- 33:37Yeah, very good. So you were talking about what
- 33:42color and I think Ryan, you brought something up earlier on.
- 33:45There is a certain country in the world we talk about, talk
- 33:49about civilization and talk about freedom of choice.
- 33:52What's going on with that country?
- 33:54So I'm a big fan of this YouTube goes by bald and bankrupt.
- 33:59My wife, not a fan thinks he's a jerk.
- 34:01I think he's highly entertaining and watched a video of him and
- 34:05it's Turkmenistan, I think is how it's pronounced and it is AI
- 34:09think a former Soviet Republic kind of straddling Europe and
- 34:13Asia. And and this, this dictator has
- 34:17dictated that everyone in the country drive a white car,
- 34:20although I think silver also is OK, you can't have tinted
- 34:24windows either, which I am totally down with, you know, I
- 34:26hate tinted windows. But it got me thinking.
- 34:29If you were, you know, dictating, what would you
- 34:33dictate your country? Men and women drive What color?
- 34:40Well, I think what's so funny is it's like, what would be ahead
- 34:43of that on the list? If suddenly you're like, oh, I'm
- 34:45a dictator, where do I start? We, we, we, we may have this
- 34:52opportunity. Right.
- 34:54At some point, but yeah, that's what would you, what would you,
- 34:57what would you go for 'cause I, I, I, I would say, you know, I
- 35:00would welcome my, my country folk to the People's Republic of
- 35:04Muirblau. I think that's what I would,
- 35:06would go with. But you think Father King?
- 35:13Dan, do you have your answer? I I, yeah.
- 35:17It's weird, isn't it? What would you dictate the color
- 35:19of the country's cars to be? Yeah, I mean.
- 35:23I have. Like like a few.
- 35:26I mean red pops into my mind just because I love red, but I'm
- 35:30like, but is that what I want? Every single car in the.
- 35:33Country to be? How big is this country?
- 35:35How many cars are we talking? That, that speaks revolt to me
- 35:38now, Lindsay, right? Yeah, keep the people in line.
- 35:43I'm inciting. Yeah.
- 35:44What do they say? Yeah, Well, if you do well, it's
- 35:47what is. If you do red and yellow
- 35:49together, that's why they do McDonald's.
- 35:50It's. Red and yellow because it makes.
- 35:52You hungry? So I would say everybody could
- 35:54have red and yellow, yeah. Ketchup and mustard.
- 35:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Makes me hungry for the
- 36:00McDonald's of your though. Current McDonald's not really
- 36:02cutting it in my eyes. But with the with the characters
- 36:05and like the Hamburglar and the playground.
- 36:07Right. I want to get stuck in that
- 36:08little hamburger jail on right. Play land well.
- 36:12And, you know, we were reminiscing in my house and
- 36:15educating the younger generation the other day.
- 36:18I don't know if, Dan, you probably did not have this
- 36:20experience, but people used to do their birthday parties at
- 36:22McDonald's when I was growing up.
- 36:24Huge deal, huge deal. Amazing.
- 36:27I mean, I don't know that I ever got to have one of my own
- 36:31parties, but I attended many a Fiesta at McDonald's.
- 36:35I don't want to get off on a tangent here, but growing up
- 36:38when we did, McDonald's was the alpha and the Omega and the
- 36:42Happy Meal things that they had like, you know, Dukes of
- 36:44Hazzard, you know, plastic shaped Happy Meal containers and
- 36:49what oh, they did you a UFOs thing, you know, used to be able
- 36:53to buy those McDonald's and cookies that were like crack,
- 36:55you know, if they ever got those back, I'd eat those every day.
- 36:58You know, you get those hot apple pies, you know, the little
- 37:01gift certificates you get from your grandmother at Christmas,
- 37:03You know, and. Just that was a huge.
- 37:05That was just a different. That was a whole, a whole
- 37:07different. Time it was a different time.
- 37:09I know we I did a splurge on Happy meals at my house but I'll
- 37:15different. Hamburgers and water, Is that
- 37:18what you? I'm they're.
- 37:19McDonald's jail. The only thing I will add is the
- 37:22coolest McDonald's I've ever been to Yeah was off of a lake
- 37:25in New Zealand and it is an aeroplane.
- 37:29Oh, that's very. Cool onto the aeroplane to get
- 37:32your food and eat your food, so look that up.
- 37:35Yeah. Airplane in New Zealand.
- 37:37Plus, you're in New Zealand. I mean, you know, what can you
- 37:39lose? Much better, yeah.
- 37:42For sure. It's like an afterthought.
- 37:43You're like, oh, and you're also in New Zealand, but airplane
- 37:45McDonald's. Yeah, they might have to go with
- 37:48that. Alfa Romeo Quadrifolio.
- 37:52Quadrifolio Green, which is also similar to the M5 touring green.
- 37:57Yeah, it's an amazing, amazing green.
- 38:00Yeah, I heard that there was a Porsche event last weekend in
- 38:04Southern California. Did anyone go?
- 38:07I did not for the first time ever, unfortunately.
- 38:10You've been to everyone, haven't?
- 38:12You. Yeah.
- 38:13It felt very strange not to be there.
- 38:16Lindsay, I don't think you were the only one.
- 38:17There was a very little buzz, at least in my circles, this year.
- 38:22Yeah, it was. This time around.
- 38:23Last year, and I think the weather played a huge part of in
- 38:28this because very unusually for April in Southern California, it
- 38:32actually rained heavily during the event.
- 38:35And so I think there were a lot of people that ended up not
- 38:39going because it was pretty early on and.
- 38:42Sucks but. Yeah, I mean it, you know, it
- 38:45kind of literally dampened things.
- 38:47And so I'm wondering if that kind of carried over into this
- 38:50year where people went like, well, we missed last year, it
- 38:52was fine, you know. Lindsay, you don't want a big
- 38:55puddle of Porsche, you know, I mean that, you know, you got to
- 38:59wipe it off your shoes and, you know, and you melt.
- 39:01So yeah. Yeah, there was quite a big
- 39:03investment in Luft, right, because that was in Japan.
- 39:06So I wonder also people. Yeah, good point.
- 39:08And they saved their money and went to Japan because I hear
- 39:10that was amazing. It looks like it.
- 39:13Yeah. How do you top that?
- 39:14How do you top the event the year before?
- 39:16At some point, right, it just sort of becomes routine and,
- 39:19and, and maybe this was that year, I don't know, it wasn't
- 39:21there. I'm sure it was wonderful and
- 39:22I'm sure people that went had wonderful experiences.
- 39:24But you know, it, I think the, the bigger question is there's,
- 39:28there's so much competition, there's so many events, right?
- 39:31You know, I go to all kinds of this kind of this, this stuff,
- 39:34But, but I have to pick and choose, right?
- 39:36I only have X dollars, X time I can spend to travel and this
- 39:39kind of thing. And especially in Southern
- 39:40California of a spoil of riches, right?
- 39:43Exactly. These amazing cars and coffees
- 39:45every weekend. And and so you know.
- 39:48I mean, maybe that's part of it is that I also like that helped
- 39:52with the pang of not being there is that I've gotten to do these,
- 39:56you know, the informal amazing cars and coffees at Crystal Cove
- 39:58lately. So it wasn't.
- 40:00Happened over 280 nines, right? Which would you choose?
- 40:05Like I'm doing OK. Friend of the show Andreas
- 40:08Prineger, who we met multiple times during Car week.
- 40:12And Goodwood was there. Yeah, and he also went to Good
- 40:16Vibes. I know I.
- 40:17Did. That's cool.
- 40:19That's it was too cool. It's, I think Camisa was hosting
- 40:22him, wasn't he? I don't know who was hosting
- 40:25because I know Johnny's post said they had like, whether it
- 40:29was Andreas Burninger himself or Porsche, there was a handful of
- 40:33journalists and they all got Porsches and caravanned up
- 40:36together. So I don't know who was the
- 40:39ultimate host, but it looked amazing and Can you imagine
- 40:43being up there and just having him show up?
- 40:47Or like Spike having him in the passenger seat riding shotgun,
- 40:50right? I mean, you are driving the car
- 40:52that was born of this man, right?
- 40:54Talk about, you know, watching, you know, every little thing
- 40:57you're doing, you know better get that that shift just right
- 40:59or, you know, it's just yeah if. Anything is going to make you
- 41:04self-conscious or second guess yourself.
- 41:06Yeah, that would be it. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:08That's like trying to hang up Picasso on the wall with
- 41:09Picasso, you know, behind your shoulder.
- 41:12I mean, that's, that's tough. He's standing there going a
- 41:14little bit a little higher on the left side, yeah.
- 41:17You're good then, he says. It's upside down.
- 41:21You have grossly misunderstood my art.
- 41:23I'm leaving. But Congrats to Spike for
- 41:27getting him on the show. That's I know score.
- 41:30It was a good episode. It was an interesting
- 41:32conversation, he seems. And it was funny because Spike
- 41:36commented like, yeah, you're more American than we are in
- 41:38some ways. And like he said, he likes he's
- 41:41a big fan of pickup trucks. Like he has a Dodge Ram himself,
- 41:45which interesting. I didn't see that coming.
- 41:48I bet he knows there are 50 states in the Union just saying
- 41:51yes. I'm listening to country music
- 41:54he's a big fan of. Really.
- 41:56Garth Brooks? I don't know.
- 42:00Story. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:02Just we'll make it. Up.
- 42:02Wait till Chad GPD picks that up.
- 42:04It'll become a thing. Dan, you.
- 42:05Know he only. Drives his GT3 touring with
- 42:08cowboy boots on. Hey, narrow pedal box and all.
- 42:14Yeah. I've got an interesting question
- 42:16for you guys and I'll give you an example in a minute, which
- 42:19car manufacturers are not doing right by their their audience,
- 42:24by their their customers. So the example I'll give you and
- 42:28I've got a couple of other thoughts, but the example I'll
- 42:30give you is Subaru. So we love Subaru on this show.
- 42:35We know that there is a lot of demand for the STI, but they
- 42:38just refused to make it these days, right?
- 42:41I was at Subi Fest last year. There were so many STI's at that
- 42:45event, you know, wall to wall STI's.
- 42:48But I feel like Subaru are not doing the right thing by their
- 42:51customers by not producing the cars that they want.
- 42:55Yeah. So can you guys think of any
- 42:57other manufacturers that are similar?
- 42:59Well, and I don't know why that's the case for super
- 43:01because you know, STI has always been more of a of a handling and
- 43:05arrow and breaking exercise versus huge extra power, right?
- 43:09So it wouldn't seem like it would take that much to do that.
- 43:13Like it would be an easy, you know, it's like Porsches Rs or
- 43:16if they're going to sell everyone they make right.
- 43:20But the the brand that comes to mind to me is Mini and I was in
- 43:25a friend's, I don't know, mini. It's probably 6 or 8 years old
- 43:28and I hadn't been in a mini in a while.
- 43:30My parents had a club in for a long time.
- 43:32I very famously a few years ago drove all the the JCWGP cars
- 43:39back-to-back, which was a real thrill from the last of the
- 43:42classic cars bought at the John Cooper Works dealership in the
- 43:45UK to the, at the time, the most recent GP car, and they were
- 43:49wonderful. But I've seen a couple of the
- 43:52new Minis, the Mini Cooper, specifically on the road
- 43:55recently. That rear view is rough.
- 43:59And I know they're BMW based now, for better or worse, but I
- 44:03just feel like they've kind of lost their way.
- 44:05And I know they had terrible sales.
- 44:08I was driving someone past. We have a big Mini dealership
- 44:10South of Denver the other day. And their reaction was, well,
- 44:13I've never actually seen a Mini dealership before, much less one
- 44:16that, you know, is as big as the Chevy dealership next door.
- 44:19And I think they were really struggling with just bringing
- 44:21people in the door and supporting these giant buildings
- 44:23that Mini had dictated they build, you know, way back when,
- 44:27when Millie Mini was. There you go again.
- 44:32Yeah, Mini was, I was really killing it.
- 44:35You know, I just, I just feel like, you know, from, from what
- 44:37I've heard, they, they, they're just not the same.
- 44:39And there was a magic, right? There was something, if you
- 44:42drove a Mini, you know, you were making a statement right there,
- 44:44a statement piece and just neat cars handled like nothing else,
- 44:49like, you know, they were, you know, a square stance and
- 44:51everything else. That's the car that comes to
- 44:52mind. I think there are a few, but
- 44:54that's another one. I just think they kind of lost
- 44:56their way or they're just not giving the customers what I
- 44:58think the true enthusiasts of the brand are looking for.
- 45:03Yeah. Yeah, I think the modern ones, I
- 45:06think I saw one the other day and I, it took me a second to
- 45:08even realize that it was a mini, which, you know, it's always, I
- 45:12think it's always tricky. And I don't envy the designers
- 45:17sort of when they're tasked with like, OK, refresh it, come up
- 45:20with a new thing, but also maintain the design language and
- 45:23you know, have people know that it is what it is instantly, but
- 45:26also make it totally new, like. That's not a bigger and right
- 45:30it's. Not a simple proposition.
- 45:33Yeah. But it's hard when sometimes
- 45:34you're like, OK, but this is not it.
- 45:37But, you know, it's easy for me to say.
- 45:39Yeah, but it's definitely different.
- 45:41It's a departure from sort of the classic.
- 45:43Even the new ones, classic lines have been good.
- 45:48Yeah. That's.
- 45:49That's disheartening. You never.
- 45:51You never want to see that with a brand that everybody loves
- 45:53because they were so charming and fun and cute and, you know,
- 45:57Speaking of colors, think about all the options.
- 45:59Yeah, with the roofs and the. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:02Yeah, Wing marrow. Is a big thing.
- 46:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:06Did you have an alternative, Lindsay?
- 46:09No. The other ones I was thinking
- 46:12about, I was thinking about VW and specifically the Golf.
- 46:16Yeah. I feel like the Golf has lost
- 46:18its way. You know they used to do the hot
- 46:21hatch. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:23And, you know, it just got warmer over over the years,
- 46:26didn't it? Yeah, that's.
- 46:29Right neighbor crossed the alley I think in part of my
- 46:33recommendation. Just brought home a new GTI and
- 46:36it's that really pretty Gray colour.
- 46:38Couldn't get it in manual, which she wanted, but she ended up
- 46:41getting the you know, the DSG and and and the auto also, I
- 46:45think cross shop they are. But for her purposes just
- 46:47couldn't justify the leap in price of 15,000 or whatever.
- 46:49But that is like the last real Volkswagen that car, right?
- 46:54And we all know Volkswagen peaked in 2002.
- 46:58But. You heard it here first.
- 46:59Yeah, that is the last sort of that's the last soldier, right.
- 47:03In my opinion is is the GTI. I think for me though, like the
- 47:08GTI, it's not competitive compared to the competition.
- 47:13So what I mean by that is like a modern day GTI for me is the GR
- 47:17Corolla. You know, yeah, yeah.
- 47:22Well, and then they've got the S3 within the VAG group, right?
- 47:25And, and many people will probably tell you that that's
- 47:27the better car, right. So.
- 47:30Yeah. And it's an Audi, right?
- 47:33You know. Let us know what you think.
- 47:36I think it's interesting, you know, looking at the the WRXSTI
- 47:41because there is so much demand, like conversationally.
- 47:45But I feel like we talked about this on the show too, is like,
- 47:48do consumers put their money where their mouth is?
- 47:50Like if they made them, you know, do they sell all of them?
- 47:55And obviously, like manufacturers have to look at
- 47:58all of the regulations and the emissions because you look at,
- 48:03you know, you're like, why would Ford make the Escort for so long
- 48:06or whatever? It's like they have to balance
- 48:09what is it overall fuel economy or something?
- 48:11And so they have to have the tiny cars or the economy cars
- 48:14with the big cars or whatever. And I'm sure that's part of it
- 48:17with Subaru. But, you know, it's like, do
- 48:22they, is it economically sound for them to keep making them?
- 48:26Are people willing to commit and keep buying them even though
- 48:29ostensibly there is demand? And obviously, Subaru knows the
- 48:32answer. Well, they're still selling the
- 48:35the WRX, right? So.
- 48:37Yeah, they're selling a very easy, powerful performers.
- 48:40Yeah, but not that. Are they making as many?
- 48:45Don't know, but the other one I was thinking of was Ferrari and,
- 48:49and mainly because yes, these days a lot of their cars I think
- 48:55look quite similar. But but Ferrari customers are
- 49:00screaming out for a manual, screaming out for a manual.
- 49:04And there's rumors and I've heard from senior design folks
- 49:08that there's a manual coming, but there's no manual.
- 49:12It's like, you know, the Gordon Murray cars are doing amazing.
- 49:16One sold last week for 8 million.
- 49:17I don't saw that well. I think there's an aesthetic
- 49:21thing going on there too, Dan, not just the manual And you
- 49:24know, had Ryan Sapka on the show a couple episodes ago, brought
- 49:27in a lot of new listeners to the show.
- 49:29So thank you. And we should do more Ferrari
- 49:30content is the lesson I learned. But a lot of the Ferrari guys I
- 49:35know who guys who have 6 or 8 Ferraris, the newest thing in
- 49:38their collection is often something like a 575 or a 360.
- 49:41I think when they stopped working with Pin and Farina,
- 49:44things all went to shit when they stopped, you know, offering
- 49:47a manual, you know, that certainly didn't help.
- 49:51I do not aspire to own a modern Ferrari personally.
- 49:54And I think it's, yeah, they've lost their, I lost their weight.
- 49:57I, I grew up, you know, hell, I wanted a, a Mondeal, you know,
- 50:01I'd still take a Mondeal, you know, but that's, that's a real
- 50:03Ferrari in a way that, you know, something like the, you know,
- 50:06the, the 12 cylinder fill in your, your own Italian just
- 50:11doesn't quite do it for me. There was something special.
- 50:15And the new ones just yeah, yeah, someone who's never owned
- 50:18a Ferrari maybe never will. I'm here to say they've lost
- 50:21their way. But.
- 50:23I am your. I'm your source for all things
- 50:25Ferrari. Yeah.
- 50:28Well, I mean, I always gravitate too, you know, And it goes back
- 50:30to, like, what's peak Ferrari? I mean, the Testarossa for me.
- 50:33But that's such a bygone era. Yeah.
- 50:36But it was such a unique sort of alchemy of like one of those
- 50:41moments that you can't force and you know.
- 50:44Just not a sports car. True, yeah.
- 50:48Anyway. But they've recently named a car
- 50:50the Testarossa, haven't they? I think And I heard that the
- 50:55only reason they named it the Testarossa was after a certain
- 51:00period of time you have to have a product with the same name or
- 51:03else you lose the copyright and trademark.
- 51:06Oh, interesting. Is this why the new the new
- 51:09countach? Potentially.
- 51:11Yeah, interesting, Interesting. That makes more sense now.
- 51:14This is I'm like, I'm having visions of, like, the Bronco and
- 51:17the Bronco, too. They're like introducing the
- 51:19Testarossa too. It's awful.
- 51:21Yeah. Electric Googling.
- 51:23Yeah, Testarossa. Raptor.
- 51:29The tractor. The tractor?
- 51:30Yeah, There you go. The tractor, not the tractor.
- 51:34Yeah. Anyway, that's that's just some
- 51:37thoughts and music on which car companies have lost their way.
- 51:40But let us know what you think. Send us a message.
- 51:42We'd love to read them out and say, you know, good ideas or we
- 51:46might even shoot some of them down.
- 51:47But let us know what you think. You.
- 51:48Want to see some of that I'll. Take that back.
- 51:51We won't shoot any of them down. We are open and respectful on
- 51:53that contract. Have you been following some of
- 51:56the? Yeah.
- 51:57Have you been following some of the amateur detective work on
- 52:00Angela's Crest Highway? That's been in our comments
- 52:03section, People breaking down The Who it is, speech patterns
- 52:06and things. Our commenters have some
- 52:09theories and the identity of our pal.
- 52:13I mean, I love teaching all the engagement, right?
- 52:15Yeah, what I will say, he's getting quicker at getting those
- 52:18things out. I know.
- 52:20Wow. I think the Long Beach Grand
- 52:22Prix was out that night, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 52:25And the Porsche launch? Yeah, but has not lost his edge.
- 52:28So, you know, that's a gift when you can, you know, be that
- 52:33prolific. Prolific.
- 52:34I'm so promiscuous. Don't know about him I mean.
- 52:37You wanted to know him, right? This is how rumors get started.
- 52:44Yeah, he's he's got the gift, so.
- 52:46Yeah, true. Yeah.
- 52:47No, they're so. I mean, every time you see a new
- 52:49one, I'm just like, oh, this is gonna be good.
- 52:51Yeah. And then I think way that goes
- 52:53back to what we've talked about with him and what we've all said
- 52:55to each other, you know, individually.
- 52:56But it's just so true. And it makes you laugh at the
- 53:01whole thing and like, laugh at yourself.
- 53:03And it's just it. And I think it prolongs the
- 53:06excitement of the event. Like I missed the GP this year
- 53:08and I was like, this is fun. I feel like I got to be a part
- 53:11of it anyway. Yep.
- 53:14I like the guest, the character who who is it in the in the cuz
- 53:18like you know, Kronega was in one and it.
- 53:21Was ballsy, yeah. Yeah, so.
- 53:24Like he said, nobody's safe because it's not targeted at
- 53:27anybody. So everybody's safe, but
- 53:29everybody's a target. But in a.
- 53:31Friendly way you'll send him a message and say put Ryan in one.
- 53:35There we go. We're gonna Crowdsource Ryan's
- 53:38appearance in an ADH video. Right, right, right.
- 53:40But but, you know, just, you know, boost me up a little bit
- 53:43in every category just to make me feel better.
- 53:45Yeah, yeah. Put him in a 356, make him look
- 53:4820 years younger, and you'll have a fan for life.
- 53:52Absolutely. We should be so lucky.
- 53:55That's when you know you've really made it right When.
- 53:57But eventually, if he's kicking these things out three a day or
- 54:00whatever he's doing, eventually he'll get to us, right?
- 54:01Right, that's my home. You've got to.
- 54:04Be on that list somewhere, right?
- 54:08The day he starts, he starts mocking our Pearl St. gang in
- 54:12Denver. Since the day we know he's he's
- 54:14probably. He's run out of maybe he's
- 54:16jumped. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:17Yes, very. Good, but we welcome it of.
- 54:21Course our cars loved if they don't have a name.
- 54:25Nope. And a vote from Ryan.
- 54:30Yeah, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've never been one to name
- 54:33cars. I just I don't.
- 54:36And and ironically, I have some of the deepest emotional
- 54:39connections to my cars versus friends who just go through cars
- 54:42like, you know, it's going on a style.
- 54:44I'll have this GT4 forever if I can, if I can help it, right.
- 54:47I'll add to to collection hopefully someday.
- 54:49But but, you know, I love that car, you know?
- 54:52More than you. Know but but it has no name.
- 54:55Yeah. Lindsay, what are your cars
- 54:57called and what's the inspiration on your cars?
- 54:59So my cars have been named like we had, you know, the one of the
- 55:04family Broncos when I was a kid was named.
- 55:08And there's a movie called Romancing the Stone.
- 55:10It was Catherine or Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
- 55:16Kathleen Turner. Yeah, Yeah.
- 55:17And so there's a Bronco in that movie that was around the era of
- 55:22the last one that my family had, and it's named Pepe, which just
- 55:26struck all of us. We were watching it as a family
- 55:28and we all just were dying laughing because we were already
- 55:30we're like, wait, that's the car that we have.
- 55:31Yeah, Yeah. And so then my mom got one of
- 55:34the first Gen. expeditions because they had stopped the
- 55:37Bronco started the expeditions and she needed a car and ended
- 55:41up getting one of those. And so of course, that one had
- 55:43to be named Pepe. And.
- 55:46That's funny line in the movie where the guy says something
- 55:49about Pepe is his favorite pig. So it was Pepe the Pig was the
- 55:54name of that car. And then, you know, when I
- 55:57started acquiring my own cars, and then my daughter was old
- 56:00enough to talk and started watching Cars, the movies.
- 56:03Of course, she started realizing that we had some of those cars
- 56:07in our driveway. Like we had a red sports car
- 56:10that became Lightning McQueen. And then it all cascaded from
- 56:13there. And there were several cars
- 56:15named after the Cars franchise. I think we had Lightning Sally
- 56:19and Finn Mcmissile at one point. Very cool.
- 56:23So write in and give us a name for Ryan's car.
- 56:28Yeah, which he will never use. My cars have always been named
- 56:32so everything from my first Fiesta that.
- 56:33Surprises me the. Fiesta.
- 56:36Yeah. It was the family thing.
- 56:37I think so. Freddie, the Fiesta.
- 56:41That's so cute. Yeah, it was cool.
- 56:44My current Audi is blue, so it's Electra.
- 56:49Blue. So it's Carmen.
- 56:50Carmen Electra Yeah, very tenuous, but I was also reading
- 56:56online, there was a few, and see if you can guess what the car
- 56:59model is based on the name of the car.
- 57:02Oh. OK, the the first one was Vlad.
- 57:07The Impala. Correct.
- 57:09The Chevrolet Impala. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:12The next one was Dora, an Explorer.
- 57:18Dora the Ford Explorer. I'm just trying to think what
- 57:21the others were. There was there was a whole list
- 57:23of them. That's so fun.
- 57:26Yeah. So these people are going a long
- 57:27way. Like I think some real thought
- 57:29into it. They, they go way and beyond,
- 57:31aren't they? It's yeah, it's.
- 57:34I mean, I think Vlad's worth it though.
- 57:36That's pretty good. That's pretty excellent.
- 57:37That's. That's when you have to have a
- 57:39sticker on the back. Don't you have to?
- 57:40Yeah, I. Mean Adora's clever.
- 57:43I don't know that I would have come up with that, but it's
- 57:44like, it's so perfect. Yeah, it's anyway that that was
- 57:49a couple that came to mind. I can't think of the others at
- 57:51the minute, but maybe we'll we'll do a competition for him.
- 57:54I'm just still trying to process the fact that the expedition was
- 57:58replacement for the full size Bronco, which makes sense but I
- 58:01never really considered that was Do you know how much you know
- 58:06how soon after the demise of the Bronco?
- 58:08Because that damn Bronco was made through like.
- 58:10They stopped Bronco in 96 and the first expedition came out in
- 58:1597. Wow.
- 58:16So yeah, there you go. Well, and what's so, I mean,
- 58:19it's interesting for me, which won't surprise anybody, you
- 58:23know, being as steeped and forward as I was, is when word
- 58:26came out that they were ceasing Bronco, you know, production and
- 58:31it was like, yeah, but they're going to come out with a 4 door
- 58:33Bronco and Bronco enthusiasts will know there used to be
- 58:37something called a Centurion, which was a 4 door Bronco.
- 58:41And I've recently learned, I used to think when I was a kid
- 58:44that they took a Bronco, cut it in half and inserted the middle
- 58:47section. And I just learned that they
- 58:50actually are made from an F-250 quad cab and the back end of a
- 58:55Bronco. Interesting, interesting.
- 58:56So there's. Less splicing than I was coming
- 58:58up with in my head. I.
- 58:59Mean a Bronco always just looked like a pickup truck with the cab
- 59:02in the pack. I mean, you could kind of, they
- 59:04just see that. So they, they would cut the bed
- 59:06off the F-250, cut the Bronco, you know, in half behind the
- 59:10front seats and then splice those two together.
- 59:13And you basically had an excursion from the 80s, right?
- 59:16In the 80s or 90s, right? Right, right.
- 59:19So, you know, that's in my head, I was like, great, they're just
- 59:21going to mass produce the Centurions.
- 59:24And then in other countries they had the B-250 I think, which was
- 59:29like a three door because it only had one rear passenger
- 59:33door, but it was basically a Ford Suburban or a Centurion,
- 59:36you know, a three row big SUV. And so then when they came out
- 59:39with the Expedition, I was like, well, this doesn't look anything
- 59:42like what I was expecting. Like PBS tonight, right?
- 59:46Every day is a school day. Every day is a school day.
- 59:49Well, I hope you're taking. Every other day and Jay was
- 59:52telling the story. About how?
- 59:54There is a link segue about an explorer.
- 59:57He was telling the story about an explorer and and someone had
- 1:00:01brought it to him and said look, it's got.
- 1:00:04It's got this guy's previous owner's name all over it.
- 1:00:07And I don't know how to, to get rid of all this branding.
- 1:00:10Like his name's all over it. And Jade said to him, what's,
- 1:00:13what's the name? It's like Mr. Eddie Bauer.
- 1:00:15It was an Eddie Bauer edition of the Ford Explorer.
- 1:00:20Oh my. His underwear, right?
- 1:00:23Calvin Klein, Yeah. Calvin, Mr. Klein.
- 1:00:29Yeah, they used to have the Eddie Bauer Broncos had little
- 1:00:32trees in the seats. Oh, wow.
- 1:00:34Wow. Yeah, I just knew that was when
- 1:00:36the rich people all had was the Eddie Bauer.
- 1:00:38Tree Eddie Bauer, Yeah. It's.
- 1:00:39So what was the equivalent like? I don't know.
- 1:00:43I mean, well, I know Subaru did an LL Bean collaboration.
- 1:00:48Absolutely, and you get to 3.6. If only they still had a 3.66
- 1:00:52flat 6 and you know their cars today.
- 1:00:55Been better than Eddie Bauer or? I would say it's equivalent.
- 1:00:58I mean, they're both, they're both, you know, outdoor
- 1:01:01Outfitters, which are really just clothing companies at this
- 1:01:03point. Yeah, I know.
- 1:01:06I don't know if there were any other.
- 1:01:08Outdoor Companies. Yeah, or like like
- 1:01:12collaborations like that where it was like the such and such
- 1:01:14edition. But I mean, they had a
- 1:01:16partnership with Eddie Bauer for a long time and you got, you
- 1:01:20could get an Eddie Bauer Bronco, Eddie Bauer Explorer, maybe a
- 1:01:24truck, I don't know. But yeah, you could tell because
- 1:01:26there were four body colors and then they had tan accents over
- 1:01:31the wheel wells and the bottom. That's right.
- 1:01:33Whatever you call it, like little border.
- 1:01:36So you could get red, white, blue or green with the tan
- 1:01:40accent or black, Yeah. So 5.
- 1:01:42Colors Lindsay 3 Words What comes to mind when you when you
- 1:01:45hear Bronco 2. But yeah, I just need the one.
- 1:01:56I am sure that the intent was obviously to make money and to
- 1:02:00create like an SUV for people that didn't need the big SUV.
- 1:02:04But no, like in all fairness, the reason I say that is because
- 1:02:07they were so unstable. They were like, it was a short
- 1:02:11wheelbase tall car, not a good recipe.
- 1:02:14Yeah, you know, and maybe like now when you look at like when I
- 1:02:17look at the styling now, I didn't know this as a kid when
- 1:02:20they were on the road and being produced, like the styling is
- 1:02:24reminiscent of a first Gen. Bronco, which has the same
- 1:02:27problem, tall cars or wheelies. But they just I it's like they
- 1:02:32just sort of fell short in every area.
- 1:02:35And, you know, I mean, to my mind, like the full size Bronco
- 1:02:38was just such a win. Yeah, to call the Bronco to to
- 1:02:43try and like hitch its wagon to that when it was so not didn't
- 1:02:48live up to it that it's like. Like the Mustang too.
- 1:02:51Ford's got away. Yeah, anyway, all.
- 1:02:53Right, here's true now, isn't it?
- 1:02:56Because then you have the Mustang Mackie, right?
- 1:02:59Yeah, the Testarossa 2. Testarossa 2 coming soon.
- 1:03:03Manual only, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:06So like Ford's done it, we should try this out.
- 1:03:09What have we guys got coming up over the next few weeks?
- 1:03:11Something exciting. Nothing formal but the weather
- 1:03:15has been getting better so I am hoping to get the M3 out for a
- 1:03:19drive. Get the GT4 out for a drive.
- 1:03:21Nice. Spend as much time behind the
- 1:03:23wheels as. Possible.
- 1:03:26Yeah. And I'm off to LA on Monday to
- 1:03:29see a friend of the show. I don't think I can say too much
- 1:03:31right now. I think I'm under state. 2.
- 1:03:36Writers. I'm on assignment but yeah under
- 1:03:38embargoned. At least I'm self.
- 1:03:40Embargant. Yeah, I'll.
- 1:03:42Spill the beans, but that's some good stories.
- 1:03:46Yeah, yeah. And shout out to to Genesis, our
- 1:03:48friends at Genesis. I'm going to land at LAX and
- 1:03:50have a new G90. I think they call it the Black
- 1:03:54Edition. It's their top of the line fancy
- 1:03:57pants, you know, Bentley esque sedan.
- 1:04:01So I'll be driving around LA like a king, like a bond.
- 1:04:07I love it. Well, I mean, I think that's
- 1:04:10pretty much the trifecta on assignment, under embargo and in
- 1:04:13a press car. You have arrived.
- 1:04:15All you need to do. Is drive down Beverly Hills,
- 1:04:18pull up at the lights and Daniel Mac will come out and say, hey,
- 1:04:21what do you do for a living? Not much.
- 1:04:28That's your side mentioned for the trip is to get that to
- 1:04:31happen. That's right, that'll be drive.
- 1:04:33Around with your window you. Know the guy, like, set
- 1:04:35something up, you know, and just make it look like it was, you
- 1:04:38know, fake just by accident. Yeah, totally.
- 1:04:41Spontaneous. No one saw this.
- 1:04:42Coming. It's just, yeah, huge, huge
- 1:04:45exposure, you know, so. Yeah, good.
- 1:04:47Looking forward to that. It'll be a fun car.
- 1:04:49Yeah, I'm going this weekend to Laguna Seca and check out the
- 1:04:53IMSO Racing. So it's looking.
- 1:04:56Forward to that it. Should be a lot of fun.
- 1:04:58Long drive, but yeah, it'd be worth it for the weekend.
- 1:05:02So catching up with friend of the show Carl Knox, editor in
- 1:05:05chief. Yes, yes.
- 1:05:08I love Laguna Seca and Carl so that sounds like an amazing.
- 1:05:11Win, win you're. Gonna find you're fine.
- 1:05:13It should be fun. That's so.
- 1:05:14Fun. Yeah, well, have a safe drive.
- 1:05:17Yeah, thank you. Well, I think that's a show,
- 1:05:18isn't it, guys? Yeah.
- 1:05:19It looks like it. Lots of Edie's references
- 1:05:23tonight. There we go.
- 1:05:24Who's gonna give us the phrase that doesn't really pay, but
- 1:05:27it's a great. Price well, I am happy to do it.
- 1:05:38Thank you so much for joining us this week on that car show.
- 1:05:41And remember, always be driving and we'll see you next week.
