- 0:08Speaker 1: use code H M a unfair sports sooner or later sports,
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's Jay also.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Locked on Sooners.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Just anything Sooners. My man's got you covered. Although you
- 0:21Speaker 1: got this offense cover, Jay, can you get out there?
- 0:23Speaker 1: Do you have like, what, what, what, what are we
- 0:25Speaker 1: doing here, man?
- 0:26Speaker 2: You know, I still got a little bit of eligibility left.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I went to the clearinghouse just to verify it. But,
- 0:31Speaker 2: you know, these 40-plus-year-old bones are probably not in the
- 0:34Speaker 2: best position to try to go out there on the field. So, no,
- 0:37Speaker 2: I'm not going to be able to fix this offense. But, man,
- 0:39Speaker 2: hopefully something happens. I mean, I know you understand the pain, right? Like, yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 2: you've seen this over a couple of years. I'm just
- 0:46Speaker 2: hoping that we go out there and we actually pinch
- 0:49Speaker 2: somebody and everybody has fun.
- 0:52Speaker 1: The pain that I'm experiencing has nothing to do with
- 0:56Speaker 1: the logo on the football behind my head.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It has to do with how.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Many times I've told people that I believe in John
- 1:02Speaker 1: Mateer and this like I like maybe this is just
- 1:06Speaker 1: a therapy session. And so I'm not trying to take
- 1:09Speaker 1: cheap shots at Oklahoma or Oklahoma's fans or or or
- 1:12Speaker 1: the quarterback there.
- 1:13Speaker 2: But man, I do.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I really have told people for two years now. No,
- 1:17Speaker 1: this guy is the, is the real deal. Like he's
- 1:19Speaker 1: going to pull together last year injuries this year. I'm,
- 1:23Speaker 1: I'm running out of patience and I'm going to have to,
- 1:26Speaker 1: they're turning into lies. And that's the problem is that
- 1:28Speaker 1: I've told, I've ended up telling lies about John material
- 1:31Speaker 1: and I have to. I have to stop at some point,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but I do think he can be a really good quarterback.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I do think he's got a lot of talent. All
- 1:37Speaker 1: jokes aside, I, I am legitimately pulling for him because
- 1:41Speaker 1: not only I feel like I'm somewhat vested in it too,
- 1:44Speaker 1: because I've been waiting for that next step for, for
- 1:47Speaker 1: a minute. And you know, I do, what are your
- 1:51Speaker 1: thoughts on just where, where he is, where the struggles are,
- 1:56Speaker 1: what the, what some of the issues are with the quarterback?
- 1:58Speaker 2: You know, the biggest challenge with John and this entire
- 2:02Speaker 2: situation is We've seen him actually have big games. We've
- 2:07Speaker 2: seen him go out there and actually put up numbers.
- 2:09Speaker 2: We've seen him go out there and hit his receivers
- 2:12Speaker 2: in stride. We've seen him see open players. It's the
- 2:16Speaker 2: weirdest thing that it's just like he just fell off
- 2:20Speaker 2: a cliff after the thumb situation. And it's like ever
- 2:22Speaker 2: since then, it's been like, eh. I mean, if you
- 2:25Speaker 2: go watch the LSU game from last season or the
- 2:28Speaker 2: Alabama playoff game, he had moments again where you're like,
- 2:32Speaker 2: Oh dude, you're, you're, you're getting yourself back to what
- 2:35Speaker 2: you were. And ever since then, it just feels like,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like the dude needs LASIK or something.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like I'm thinking it was a Jameis Winston talked about,
- 2:42Speaker 2: he was blind and then he got LASIK and then boom,
- 2:45Speaker 2: he went from 30, 30 and he's out there balling,
- 2:47Speaker 2: not a shot at Florida state. You know, I'm a
- 2:49Speaker 2: big Jameis guy. He was a buccaneer when he did
- 2:52Speaker 2: his 30, 30. But the point is that, John Mateer
- 2:56Speaker 2: has given us this, and I think that's the thing
- 2:57Speaker 2: that's the most frustrating for me, too. Just like you said,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you feel like you lied to everybody. You feel like
- 3:02Speaker 2: you're feeding them wolf tickets and all of that. And
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's mainly because... It's not like we haven't seen it.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You've seen him take over games against big programs. You've
- 3:11Speaker 2: seen him have big games. Big Ten feels like that's
- 3:14Speaker 2: the conference that he's best at. I mean, he did
- 3:15Speaker 2: it against Washington. He did it against Michigan last year.
- 3:17Speaker 2: This year, not so much. But he figured it out.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And that's the thing that hurts for me as a
- 3:23Speaker 2: fan of this team and a fan of him as
- 3:25Speaker 2: a person because he really does love Oklahoma. The fans
- 3:28Speaker 2: are just booing him relentlessly. And I get it.
- 3:30Speaker 1: It's brutal.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You kind of should because he's been stinky. And it's
- 3:34Speaker 2: all because for some reason he has lost all of
- 3:37Speaker 2: his confidence.
- 3:39Speaker 1: How do you start to get that back? And is
- 3:41Speaker 1: there a worse team in this conference to try and
- 3:42Speaker 1: get it back against than the Georgia Bulldogs playing in Athens?
- 3:46Speaker 2: Well, I mean, based upon this schedule, we have zero
- 3:48Speaker 2: worse teams to go up against. Florida's been kicking tail.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Kentucky looks really good. Mississippi State, oh my God, Kamario Taylor.
- 3:56Speaker 2: So if you look at our schedule, Missouri, Austin Simmons
- 4:00Speaker 2: looks really good. If you look at our schedule, we
- 4:01Speaker 2: have zero teams that we can actually try to figure
- 4:03Speaker 2: this out against. So we have to just kind of
- 4:05Speaker 2: figure it out no matter who we play. So Georgia
- 4:08Speaker 2: this week, I don't feel like there's a 0% chance
- 4:12Speaker 2: that Oklahoma can do something. This kind of feels like
- 4:16Speaker 2: Alabama last year. When we went on the road, we
- 4:19Speaker 2: barely won it. John really, in a way, won, but
- 4:22Speaker 2: in a way, didn't. It was really the defense that
- 4:25Speaker 2: did it. The defense is going to have to do
- 4:27Speaker 2: it again. Now, granted, on the offensive side, the line
- 4:30Speaker 2: has been playing like crap. They need to get there.
- 4:32Speaker 2: They need to, you know. Man up and go out
- 4:35Speaker 2: there and do what we know that they can do
- 4:37Speaker 2: and be disruptive against Georgia. Luckily, Georgia's defensive line is OK.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I mean, it's still disruptive, but it's not the Georgia
- 4:45Speaker 2: standard that we've seen over the last few years. That's
- 4:47Speaker 2: the one spot that feels to have tapered off a
- 4:48Speaker 2: little bit. Linebackers, not so much. Their linebackers are monsters.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Terrified of them. And their secondary is really, really good.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So for Oklahoma, it's taking care of the ball, hopefully
- 4:59Speaker 2: figuring out a way to get a run game established,
- 5:01Speaker 2: but the offensive line is going to have to man up.
- 5:03Speaker 2: The tight ends are going to have to get back
- 5:04Speaker 2: to what they were doing the first week of the season.
- 5:06Speaker 2: And Ben Arbuckle is going to have to do what
- 5:08Speaker 2: he should have been doing from the beginning. He knows
- 5:11Speaker 2: his quarterback, find the ways to get him some layups.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Injuries killing Oklahoma right now. Defensive line was stone left tackle,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know, seems doubtful, um, for this game.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Um, Just.
- 5:28Speaker 1: How does that, what is the depth at those positions
- 5:32Speaker 1: maybe is the best question to ask. I was going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to ask a dumb question. How much tougher does that
- 5:35Speaker 1: make it? Well, a lot tougher. But what does the
- 5:37Speaker 1: depth look like at those positions is a better pivot.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'll get right back to chatting with Jay, but two
- 5:41Speaker 1: things really quickly. One, make sure you are subscribed to
- 5:45Speaker 1: the channel right here, SEC Football Addiction. Number two, make
- 5:49Speaker 1: sure you're subscribed on audio. It's SEC Football Addiction anywhere
- 5:52Speaker 1: you can find it. Spotify, Apple Podcasts. iHeart, 17 different
- 5:57Speaker 1: podcast platforms, Amazon, wherever you're looking, we will get you
- 6:01Speaker 1: taken care of from a podcast perspective. You don't have
- 6:03Speaker 1: to buy anything else, not selling anything else. Just make
- 6:05Speaker 1: sure you are subscribed both here and on audio. All right,
- 6:08Speaker 1: back to Jay.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think the depth is okay at the defensive line.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I think the offensive line, I mean, these guys have
- 6:15Speaker 2: played together a few times. And so at some point
- 6:18Speaker 2: they'll toughen up and go out there and play hard.
- 6:20Speaker 2: That's what we're hoping for. But for Susie losing him,
- 6:23Speaker 2: of course, it's a big deal. He's a potential first
- 6:25Speaker 2: round pick in the next year's draft in the twenty
- 6:28Speaker 2: twenty eight draft. He's really good. He was a five
- 6:30Speaker 2: star and he was the anchor on the left side.
- 6:33Speaker 2: You know, in his bad moments, he was still pretty solid.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And so he rumor has it he's going to try
- 6:38Speaker 2: to play. But right now he's on the doubtful list
- 6:40Speaker 2: with that shoulder. So we're going to just wait till
- 6:42Speaker 2: the actual report comes out on, you know, Wednesday evening,
- 6:47Speaker 2: see what it looks like. Hopefully he can play. But Stone,
- 6:50Speaker 2: sounds like Stone is pushing to try to play. Like
- 6:52Speaker 2: it was a dislocated kneecap, no structural damage. So it
- 6:56Speaker 2: may have been just a stinger type situation. Sounds like
- 6:59Speaker 2: if the swelling does, you know, subside and he's feeling
- 7:02Speaker 2: good walking and able to move in a brace, he's
- 7:05Speaker 2: going to try to play on Saturday. He wants to
- 7:08Speaker 2: play in this Georgia game. Stone's going in the first
- 7:10Speaker 2: round in the 27 draft. So this is his last
- 7:12Speaker 2: year to really get out there. So I sense he's
- 7:14Speaker 2: going to find a way to play, but the depth there,
- 7:17Speaker 2: it's not David Stone caliber yet. It's a lot of
- 7:20Speaker 2: young players, but I think we've got some guys that
- 7:22Speaker 2: can step up and at least be disruptive enough to
- 7:25Speaker 2: where it doesn't hurt as bad not having David. The
- 7:28Speaker 2: big thing is stopping Georgia's run. Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And so in that Michigan game, which Michigan wants to
- 7:35Speaker 1: run the ball too, but I certainly would give Georgia
- 7:38Speaker 1: a lean on offensive firepower when it comes to Georgia
- 7:43Speaker 1: and Michigan. But does the script have to look like that?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Where's your confidence level in the offense? Is it so
- 7:50Speaker 1: low that you know that you've got to go out
- 7:52Speaker 1: and try and win a game like you tried to
- 7:55Speaker 1: win against Michigan, where it's just super low scoring, a
- 7:58Speaker 1: good defense, going to try and hold Georgia down? Or
- 8:00Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on how competitive the defense can be?
- 8:04Speaker 2: It needs to be like last year's game against Alabama.
- 8:07Speaker 2: We won 23-21. You had a defensive touchdown. the focal
- 8:10Speaker 2: point needs to be that you just hope the offense
- 8:13Speaker 2: contributes something to this game. Hopefully they go out there
- 8:15Speaker 2: and pinch somebody, but the defense is really going to
- 8:17Speaker 2: have to be what we lean on because the offense
- 8:20Speaker 2: has not shown us that they can contribute yet. When
- 8:22Speaker 2: they show us they can contribute, cool. This could be
- 8:25Speaker 2: the weird game like Alabama. A lot of people told
- 8:27Speaker 2: us we weren't, we had no chance in that game.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And I was like, I don't know. Just watch this
- 8:32Speaker 2: team play. The defense is really good. They can figure
- 8:35Speaker 2: something out. The offense did just enough to help in
- 8:39Speaker 2: the game. There's a possibility that they could do the
- 8:42Speaker 2: exact same thing in this one, but there's no guarantee.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Like I said, there's not a 0% chance in this one.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I give them a 10, 15, maybe 20% chance of
- 8:52Speaker 2: really making this game super competitive to where it's so
- 8:55Speaker 2: muddy that they could steal it. That's what they're going
- 8:58Speaker 2: to have to do. Turnover is going to be critical.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Gunner Stockton's very good at not doing that. But Georgia
- 9:03Speaker 2: has limitations that even their fans will point out to you.
- 9:06Speaker 2: They're not very explosive. Wide receiver one is going to
- 9:09Speaker 2: be out, it sounds like. So, I mean, they got
- 9:12Speaker 2: those big old tight ends. We got dudes that like
- 9:15Speaker 2: to hit people. So the challenge for Georgia is they've
- 9:18Speaker 2: got to establish their run consistently with Nate Frazier. And
- 9:22Speaker 2: Gunnar Stockton is going to be using his leg the
- 9:23Speaker 2: entire game. Oklahoma is going to have to get similar
- 9:26Speaker 2: to that Michigan game plan. They're going to make sure
- 9:29Speaker 2: Gunner runs. It doesn't run it. They're going to make
- 9:31Speaker 2: sure Nate Frazier isn't that big of a problem, which
- 9:33Speaker 2: they've done in the past. They did that to Ahmad Hardy.
- 9:35Speaker 2: They did it to Kiwan Lacy. You go down the
- 9:38Speaker 2: list of all the running backs they did it to
- 9:39Speaker 2: last season. They can pull it off again. Look at
- 9:42Speaker 2: the Michigan backs, both of them, Jordan Marshall, as well as,
- 9:45Speaker 2: as hitter. He's a saving on hitter. He's a very,
- 9:47Speaker 2: they're both very good backs. They weren't very effective. It
- 9:50Speaker 2: was mainly all about Bryce Underwood. And so in that case,
- 9:57Speaker 2: the hope is Oklahoma can find a way. to force
- 10:02Speaker 2: Gunner to be uncomfortable, at least keep him uncomfortable. And
- 10:06Speaker 2: you have a chance to actually, you know, shock somebody.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Zooming out a little bit. Are people, I mean, college
- 10:11Speaker 1: football fans are ridiculous just in general, but where, where
- 10:15Speaker 1: are people on Venables? Because it does seem up and
- 10:18Speaker 1: down and up and down. And you get some equity,
- 10:21Speaker 1: I think, when you go to the playoff. You get
- 10:23Speaker 1: some equity when you beat a team like Bama. And
- 10:25Speaker 1: obviously the playoff didn't go super well. But are people...
- 10:29Speaker 1: Just what's the mood? I'm sure they're tired of the
- 10:32Speaker 1: up and down. And this season's not over by any means.
- 10:36Speaker 1: But just where are people's minds at right now with him?
- 10:40Speaker 2: They're tired of the up and down. Yeah, 100%.
- 10:41Speaker 1: The.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Let me say this gently. The fans that have their
- 10:49Speaker 2: their shoulders on their head on their shoulders properly and
- 10:52Speaker 2: are really thinking about this in a logical manner. I'm
- 10:54Speaker 2: a very logical person here. If BV didn't have really
- 10:58Speaker 2: good defenses, I would be out on him, too. But
- 11:00Speaker 2: he's literally producing the side of the ball that he's
- 11:03Speaker 2: really good at. So for his problem is he can't
- 11:07Speaker 2: find an offensive coordinator to truly complement what he's trying
- 11:10Speaker 2: to do. He needs to revamp the entire offensive staff,
- 11:13Speaker 2: it sounds like. Probably hang on to the two new
- 11:15Speaker 2: guys you got. You probably need to go ahead and
- 11:17Speaker 2: move on from everybody else. It's an unfortunate thing, but
- 11:21Speaker 2: it's probably the mindset they need to go into. Why?
- 11:24Speaker 2: Because you've seen struggles ever since Jeff Lebby left. It
- 11:29Speaker 2: has been awful. You need another Jeff Levy. It's going
- 11:32Speaker 2: to be hard to find those. And I like to
- 11:34Speaker 2: remind fans this. They don't like hearing me say this,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but I expect Brent Venables to have a new offensive
- 11:40Speaker 2: coordinator every two to three years at minimum. Like some
- 11:43Speaker 2: years and maybe every year. The reason is it's going
- 11:46Speaker 2: to be one or two things that will happen, TJ.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And you understand this as a fan and as someone
- 11:50Speaker 2: that follows the team. If you have a coach that's
- 11:53Speaker 2: a defensive-minded guy and their offense is really good, that
- 11:57Speaker 2: offensive coordinator is going to get a head coaching job. Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 2: If you have an offensive coordinator and they stink, you're
- 12:02Speaker 2: going to have to fire him and get another one.
- 12:04Speaker 2: So no matter what, your coaches are going to be going. Saban,
- 12:07Speaker 2: I remember one time Saban had like five years in
- 12:09Speaker 2: a row he had new offensive coordinators. I mean, he
- 12:11Speaker 2: had Brian Dayball. He had Loxley. He had, of course,
- 12:14Speaker 2: Lane was the one he settled on. He was able
- 12:16Speaker 2: to settle on. And then he got fired because of
- 12:19Speaker 2: just being Lane. And then Sarkeesian came in. Every so
- 12:22Speaker 2: many years, you're replacing offensive coordinators. And it's usually if
- 12:27Speaker 2: it's because of success or they're not doing things right.
- 12:30Speaker 2: So if it's good, Jeff Levy situation, they get a
- 12:33Speaker 2: head coaching job at an SEC school. If it's bad,
- 12:36Speaker 2: you fire him like Seth Luttrell and potentially Ben Arbuckle.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So no matter what, get used to changes in offense.
- 12:42Speaker 2: But the changes shouldn't be a situation because the offensive
- 12:46Speaker 2: coordinator is bad. That's what he needs to fix. And
- 12:48Speaker 2: that is where everybody's tired.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Does it surprise you that Arbuckle hasn't seen success so far?
- 12:54Speaker 1: Or just having the familiarity with John? Are you a
- 12:58Speaker 1: little surprised by that? Because I did think it would
- 13:00Speaker 1: be a good fit coming in.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I'm extremely surprised. You've had a dude for four years
- 13:05Speaker 2: and you don't know how to use him? That is
- 13:07Speaker 2: what bothers me in all of this is, dog, you
- 13:10Speaker 2: have watched this dude play for four years. When he
- 13:16Speaker 2: got recruited to the school, you may not have been
- 13:17Speaker 2: the person, but when you got there, he was there
- 13:20Speaker 2: on the roster. He knows your system. You know his
- 13:23Speaker 2: goods and bads. Why haven't you schemed specifically for his
- 13:27Speaker 2: goods and bads? You know what he can do. You
- 13:30Speaker 2: know that he seems to be blind and he's LASIK.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Tell him where to throw the ball. That was the
- 13:35Speaker 2: strength that Jeff Levy has, Josh Heupel has, Lane Kiffin has.
- 13:42Speaker 2: They typically can go out there and basically be the quarterback.
- 13:45Speaker 2: They tell their quarterback, this is your read. This is
- 13:47Speaker 2: where you're going to go. Just throw the ball. I
- 13:49Speaker 2: promise you, if you follow my instructions, it's going to
- 13:51Speaker 2: work because I'm narcissistic like that. That's Sean McVay. That's
- 13:55Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan, et cetera, so on and so forth. He
- 13:58Speaker 2: needs to do more of that. He should be able
- 14:00Speaker 2: to do that. And it feels like he can't. And
- 14:02Speaker 2: that is where I'm just like, this probably isn't going
- 14:06Speaker 2: to work long term.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Do you have a score for this one? I know
- 14:11Speaker 1: this is a painful part.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It is. I don't think Georgia scores a lot in
- 14:15Speaker 2: this game. I think that this is going to be
- 14:17Speaker 2: a low-scoring game, 21, and I'm going to say like 10.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Georgia wins. I don't think they cover the spread. I'm
- 14:25Speaker 2: going to go ahead and ride with Georgia until Oklahoma's
- 14:27Speaker 2: offense proves me wrong. I would like to say 23-21 Oklahoma,
- 14:31Speaker 2: but I need them to show me that they can
- 14:32Speaker 2: go ahead and put points on the board. I do
- 14:34Speaker 2: think if Oklahoma wins, it's 23-21-ish. If they lose, it's 21-10.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Jay, what do you got coming this week? Where can
- 14:42Speaker 1: people follow you, find all your work and all that?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Find me over at locked on Sooners, as well as
- 14:46Speaker 2: at unfair sports, my sooner or later sports pod. We're
- 14:48Speaker 2: be dropping something this week in preparation for the Georgia game.
- 14:52Speaker 2: And I'll be in Athens because win or lose, I'm
- 14:55Speaker 2: going to check out my team in nice stadiums. So
- 14:58Speaker 2: I appreciate you having me TJ as usual.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I checked out my team in a very nice stadium
- 15:02Speaker 1: on Saturday and I am neglecting my team to go
- 15:05Speaker 1: to Knoxville this weekend. So, I'm back-to-back SEC. You guys
- 15:09Speaker 1: are trying to convert me, but I'm back-to-back SEC road town,
- 15:12Speaker 1: so excited for it. Appreciate you, Jay, for hanging out.
