- 0:02Speaker 1: This is Jess Weixler and Jennifer Prediger.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And you're listening to Movie Meltdown. This episode is rated
- 0:33Speaker 2: M for Misty. Yes, that's right, this is a Misty episode,
- 0:37Speaker 2: so it will be laced with profanity even more than usual.
- 0:40Speaker 2: If you're not comfortable with this level of profanity, perhaps
- 0:43Speaker 2: this isn't the episode for you. But we have many
- 0:45Speaker 2: other episodes to choose from that do not feature Misty,
- 0:47Speaker 2: and will probably be far less offensive. Okay, maybe. With
- 0:52Speaker 2: that having been said, on with the show.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Kilowatts of power.
- 1:29Speaker 3: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:41Speaker 5: I'm Brian.
- 1:42Speaker 6: I am Misty.
- 1:43Speaker 5: And we are coming to you live via digital recording
- 1:45Speaker 5: from the outskirts of Wizard World.
- 1:47Speaker 6: From the roof.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Are we?
- 1:50Speaker 6: We're on a roof.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The roof?
- 1:52Speaker 6: It's on fire.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Who's your favorite baseball player?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Huh?
- 1:57Speaker 5: Roof.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Never mind.
- 1:59Speaker 6: Roof.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Anyway. The outskirts of Wizard World here in Louisville.
- 2:06Speaker 4: So, we've had quite a day.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Been a lot of people. My favorite.
- 2:12Speaker 5: You do like people.
- 2:12Speaker 6: That was sarcasm.
- 2:13Speaker 5: You are a people person.
- 2:15Speaker 6: I am nothing if not... Yeah, I fucking hate people.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Sunny disposition.
- 2:21Speaker 6: They're my least favorite of all things. If there just
- 2:22Speaker 6: be less people in the world, I'd be a little
- 2:25Speaker 6: bit happier.
- 2:25Speaker 5: I was surprised today, though. Everybody seemed, like, friendly.
- 2:29Speaker 7: It was.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Ugh, nauseating. It was disturbing. I was like, I don't know.
- 2:33Speaker 5: I'm not used to dealing with, like, friendly people.
- 2:35Speaker 6: I don't know. That kid that kept trying to hand
- 2:37Speaker 6: me his granola.
- 2:38Speaker 5: What was that about?
- 2:39Speaker 6: I was very creeped out by that. I'm like, dude,
- 2:40Speaker 6: that is goo covered granola. You get that out of
- 2:42Speaker 6: my face.
- 2:43Speaker 4: He's a kid.
- 2:44Speaker 5: They're always covered in goo and food. That's the way
- 2:46Speaker 5: they come out.
- 2:46Speaker 6: That's why I have none of those. Kids are the worst.
- 2:49Speaker 8: But he could sense just how much you are a
- 2:51Speaker 8: kid person and he wanted to like bond with you.
- 2:54Speaker 6: Ugh. Kids. He was distracting me from the glory and
- 3:01Speaker 6: wonder of John Barrowman and I was not at all
- 3:03Speaker 6: pleased with that.
- 3:05Speaker 5: You did get to see your favorite person. He sang.
- 3:07Speaker 6: He was delightful.
- 3:08Speaker 5: He did bust into a song. He is a complete
- 3:10Speaker 5: entertainment package all in one dude.
- 3:12Speaker 6: He's the real motherfucking deal, y'all.
- 3:14Speaker 5: He kind of is. And by the end, I was
- 3:16Speaker 5: just like... You were won over, weren't you?
- 3:18Speaker 6: You went into this with no idea who John Barrowman was.
- 3:21Speaker 6: John Barrowman's there. I must go stare at him. And
- 3:23Speaker 6: you're like, who are you?
- 3:23Speaker 5: I'm like, I don't watch those shows.
- 3:26Speaker 6: I had to tell you like three times at least
- 3:27Speaker 6: a couple of the shows he was on. And you
- 3:29Speaker 6: were still like, oh.
- 3:30Speaker 5: And I'm like, we're going to go.
- 3:31Speaker 6: See him so I can stare at his wonder and glory.
- 3:33Speaker 5: And you're like, oh. I still don't watch those shows,
- 3:35Speaker 5: but all right.
- 3:36Speaker 6: And were you not completely just like, this guy's pretty awesome?
- 3:38Speaker 5: I'm like, he is quite an entertaining character, that John Bear.
- 3:42Speaker 6: He's fascinating.
- 3:44Speaker 8: And by the end, I was like, whatever that goofy
- 3:47Speaker 8: greatest show ever, greatest night ever, that Neil Patrick Harris nonsense.
- 3:50Speaker 8: Don't get me wrong, Neil Patrick Harris is freaking awesome,
- 3:52Speaker 8: but even he can't save that show. I keep seeing it,
- 3:56Speaker 8: and I'm just like, what?
- 3:57Speaker 5: This format?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 5: You're struggling to try to bring back that format anyway.
- 4:02Speaker 6: I've never watched this show.
- 4:03Speaker 8: It's like a variety show, only it's a randomness variety.
- 4:07Speaker 8: There's a whole bunch of craziness that goes on, but
- 4:09Speaker 8: it's not really all that entertaining. It's like the excitement
- 4:12Speaker 8: that you get from network television. And so it's kind
- 4:16Speaker 8: of that. And then I'm watching him run around the
- 4:18Speaker 8: stage there and sing a song and do.
- 4:21Speaker 5: It's almost blue humor for some kids in the audience.
- 4:24Speaker 8: And I was just kind of like, this is what
- 4:26Speaker 8: you need. Like, just hand this guy a microphone and
- 4:28Speaker 8: you're all set.
- 4:29Speaker 5: He is so delightful. He is an entertainment package all
- 4:32Speaker 5: rolled into one dude.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He is.
- 4:33Speaker 6: That was the main reason I wanted to come, just
- 4:34Speaker 6: to come stare at him. As previously posted on Facebook,
- 4:38Speaker 6: that was my main goal of today, was to just
- 4:39Speaker 6: go stare awkwardly at John Barrowman from a safe distance.
- 4:43Speaker 5: It's not creepy at all.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Not creepy at all.
- 4:47Speaker 8: But we also then rounded it out with equally as
- 4:51Speaker 8: entertaining a variety show, the Bruce Campbell show.
- 4:53Speaker 6: He is quite a something.
- 4:54Speaker 8: He is, again, it's like people not of this time. Like,
- 4:59Speaker 8: he's just doing a comedy bit from vaudeville.
- 5:03Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 5:03Speaker 6: That little girl stole a thunder, though.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure. Well, I mean, all of it was,
- 5:07Speaker 5: I mean, just him anyway. Like, he gets up on stage.
- 5:10Speaker 8: He doesn't really bother to do a Q & A.
- 5:12Speaker 5: He doesn't talk about the project he's there to promote,
- 5:15Speaker 5: I'm assuming.
- 5:16Speaker 6: He is having no part of the shenanigans of lines.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Yeah, that's for squares.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Come on now.
- 5:21Speaker 6: Squares. When you have a general Q & A, you
- 5:23Speaker 6: usually have people that line up with a microphone. I
- 5:25Speaker 6: guess I don't go to any Q & As. I'm
- 5:26Speaker 6: assuming that's a general.
- 5:27Speaker 5: That's kind of the way it works, yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 6: And he's like, no, fuck that mess. He didn't say that.
- 5:31Speaker 5: He said, it's for squares.
- 5:32Speaker 6: He did, because he said squares quite a few times.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Because he doesn't like squares.
- 5:35Speaker 6: So he was just randomly calling on people and making
- 5:37Speaker 6: fun of their questions. It was quite hilarious.
- 5:39Speaker 8: Yeah, the whole thing was, if you have a question,
- 5:41Speaker 8: just line up to get abused. Because he was just...
- 5:45Speaker 8: But not like in a mean way. If it were
- 5:46Speaker 8: anybody other than Bruce Campbell, I'd be like, oh, that
- 5:49Speaker 8: guy's a dick.
- 5:49Speaker 5: But I'm just like... But it's Bruce Campbell. He's hilarious.
- 5:52Speaker 6: Who's the first girl to ask the first question? He's like,
- 5:54Speaker 6: that's a lame question.
- 5:56Speaker 5: There are no bad questions, except for this lady right here, obviously.
- 6:00Speaker 6: Asking Bruce Campbell where he buys his shoes is obviously
- 6:02Speaker 6: not going to get you any brownie points.
- 6:05Speaker 8: I liked the randomness of some of them, and he
- 6:07Speaker 8: just didn't even seem amused with that.
- 6:10Speaker 5: He does give money away, though, so if you go
- 6:12Speaker 5: to his shows, he will hand you cash.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Like a dollar.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Like a dollar.
- 6:16Speaker 5: But cold, hard cash dollars. that little girl totally stole
- 6:21Speaker 5: his thing.
- 6:22Speaker 8: So by the end he brings up all these cosplay
- 6:24Speaker 8: people started with a bunch of ash and then it
- 6:26Speaker 8: just became a bunch of whoever.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Well there was the best ash contest with the half ash.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Didn't we see that at that bar that one night?
- 6:35Speaker 5: Oh no wait we don't go to bars.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Fuck a bar.
- 6:37Speaker 5: This is the closest thing we get to a Best
- 6:40Speaker 5: Ash contest. So, yeah. Some of them are pretty sorry. Again,
- 6:45Speaker 5: I was immediately a sucker for Bondage Girl, and I
- 6:47Speaker 5: didn't even know.
- 6:48Speaker 4: About the bondage tie-in yet.
- 6:49Speaker 6: She was pretty adorable.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Just, yeah, adorable girls.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Chicks who cosplay as badass dudes, you can't fight that.
- 6:54Speaker 6: I've seen so many chicks cosplay as, like, Castiel from Supernatural,
- 6:58Speaker 6: and I'm like, I'm not into chicks, but that's pretty hot.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I'm telling you. Bondage Ash was kind of hot.
- 7:03Speaker 6: Yeah, because everybody had their, like, harness area, their harness
- 7:06Speaker 6: things on, their strappy-doos or what have you. And she
- 7:09Speaker 6: got hurt because everybody else was like, oh, I got mine.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Mine's a horse bridle.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Mine was from a Cadillac Escalade.
- 7:18Speaker 6: I don't think that's a real car.
- 7:21Speaker 5: It's the wrong brand of factory.
- 7:22Speaker 6: I got mine at the bondage store.
- 7:24Speaker 5: He walked over to her and she just started shaking
- 7:26Speaker 5: her head like, don't ask me. Don't ask me. You
- 7:29Speaker 5: don't want me to tell you.
- 7:30Speaker 6: She was so cute.
- 7:31Speaker 5: She was pretty adorable. Bondage ash. That's the way to go.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Hell yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Which is why I voted for her.
- 7:37Speaker 4: And she won.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Thank you very much.
- 7:38Speaker 6: She won. I think everybody in there was like, woo!
- 7:40Speaker 8: I mean, cute chicks in bondage gear. That's who's going
- 7:43Speaker 8: to win the popularity contest.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Come on now.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Not the chunky dude with his nipple hanging out.
- 7:47Speaker 5: That's not what nobody's looking for.
- 7:48Speaker 6: That is not on my voting register right there.
- 7:53Speaker 8: But the only thing possibly cuter than Bondi Jash was as.
- 7:56Speaker 5: He brings up all the rest of these people.
- 7:58Speaker 6: To put on a performance of their cosplay.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Their performances.
- 8:01Speaker 8: He kept trying to get them that they had talent
- 8:03Speaker 8: and see who had talent amongst the people.
- 8:05Speaker 6: And not just wear their outfit with no like.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Just standing around.
- 8:09Speaker 6: There was what Kung Fu Fury was there. There was
- 8:12Speaker 6: some kind of Kung Fu other guy who had no
- 8:14Speaker 6: relation to Kung Fu Fury. There was Mario.
- 8:17Speaker 5: There was a bad Mario.
- 8:19Speaker 6: What else was there? One chick from Archer who was.
- 8:23Speaker 5: He barely let her squeak in.
- 8:25Speaker 6: And the cutest of all.
- 8:27Speaker 5: She just came wandering up on stage. And that became
- 8:30Speaker 5: her move. Her finishing move. How old are we thinking?
- 8:36Speaker 5: Four at most. Three or four. This little girl in a.
- 8:40Speaker 8: Not even like a cosplay. It's just like a dress
- 8:43Speaker 8: that had Belle on it.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I didn't even know if it was a Halloween.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Was it officially?
- 8:47Speaker 5: It just looked like something she bought at the Disney store.
- 8:49Speaker 6: Elsa.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Well, they're all. The princesses are all running together into
- 8:54Speaker 5: one big thing now. There's so many princesses.
- 8:56Speaker 6: The first thing that won me over was when he
- 8:57Speaker 6: goes to sit by her because she's a tiny little tot.
- 9:00Speaker 6: So he goes to sit by her so he can
- 9:01Speaker 6: be more on her level and she just proceeds to
- 9:03Speaker 6: sit next to him like it's story time.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Well, and she was following his lead. She was like, oh,
- 9:08Speaker 5: it's time to sit down.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Okay. Uncle Bruce is going to tell her a story.
- 9:12Speaker 5: He's going to tell me about Old Spice or something.
- 9:14Speaker 6: Delightful times. And she was just all over the place.
- 9:17Speaker 8: She was just like, he would go, okay, and he'd
- 9:19Speaker 8: go back to talk to these people and then like
- 9:21Speaker 8: He'd be midway into a conversation with them and she
- 9:24Speaker 8: would just.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Go wandering past them.
- 9:25Speaker 6: Skipping by.
- 9:26Speaker 8: Just back and forth across the stage, completely oblivious as
- 9:30Speaker 8: to the entire audience full of people and the fact
- 9:33Speaker 8: that he's trying to conduct a show.
- 9:35Speaker 6: Even though I don't like kids as previously stated, she
- 9:37Speaker 6: was pretty fucking adorable.
- 9:38Speaker 5: She was pretty adorable.
- 9:39Speaker 8: So again, that, you know, by the end I was like,
- 9:41Speaker 8: is he even going to bother to get applause for
- 9:43Speaker 8: the rest of these poor bastards?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Cause, No.
- 9:46Speaker 6: She had wandered off stage by that point.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Yeah, she was just.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I was like, it doesn't matter.
- 9:50Speaker 8: All he has to do is throw the option out
- 9:52Speaker 8: there and she's going to win, which, of course, she
- 9:53Speaker 8: did because she's awesome.
- 9:55Speaker 6: And then she had to get the money, which is
- 9:56Speaker 6: pretty damn ridiculous, too.
- 9:57Speaker 5: It does show you the... impact, though.
- 10:01Speaker 8: Not that he addressed evil dead much at all during
- 10:04Speaker 8: this process, but the people in front of us who
- 10:07Speaker 8: had a whole litter of kids. I don't think it
- 10:11Speaker 8: was the one trying to hand you food, but one
- 10:12Speaker 8: of the other ones, while he started talking, she's like,
- 10:15Speaker 8: be quiet, Ash. I swear to God, she referred to
- 10:18Speaker 8: him by name. He wasn't wearing a costume. They named
- 10:21Speaker 8: their child Ash. I can't imagine being in that room.
- 10:24Speaker 5: It was by accident. Yeah, I know.
- 10:26Speaker 8: So it shows you, like, you do the math of, like,
- 10:28Speaker 8: how many kids since probably Army of Darkness got really
- 10:31Speaker 8: super popular have named their children Ash.
- 10:34Speaker 6: I was just more surprised there were not more Ashes
- 10:36Speaker 6: in the audience to partake in the Ash contest.
- 10:38Speaker 5: That's true. He was sort of the big go-to, like,
- 10:41Speaker 5: guest here. And, like, there was only, what, six? Five
- 10:43Speaker 5: or six. Five or six, yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 8: If you count that guy in the wrong color shirt.
- 10:47Speaker 8: Which thankfully Bruce laid him out because you can't let
- 10:50Speaker 8: that slide.
- 10:50Speaker 6: Wrong hand.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Wrong hand also needs.
- 10:53Speaker 8: If he would have at least put the spin on it,
- 10:56Speaker 8: he just did it like, I'm left-handed. So if he
- 10:59Speaker 8: would have followed it with, I'm doing me, if I
- 11:01Speaker 8: were taken over by the evil dead spirit and.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Became a deadite, then I would diffuse this in. Not
- 11:09Speaker 5: the character Ash on screen, which is right-handed.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 6: No, he was left-handed.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Because.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I thought Bruce said he was.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Bruce is left-handed, yes. I'm confused. This whole thing.
- 11:19Speaker 5: It's all confusing, people.
- 11:22Speaker 6: I'm so confused right now. Delightful times.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I did notice in looking at all the stuff, Misty,
- 11:28Speaker 5: you need more goggles.
- 11:29Speaker 6: There's a shit ton of goggles. There was a fluffy, furry, feathery, leathery,
- 11:35Speaker 6: every variety of goggle one could possibly ask for was there.
- 11:40Speaker 4: You had no goggles on.
- 11:41Speaker 5: You were just sorely lacking in the goggle department.
- 11:44Speaker 6: I hate Bono goggles.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I don't even know if anybody gets that reference anymore.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Go borrow bills.
- 11:51Speaker 5: You're losing your Bono reference windows.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Oh, that's so sad. I feel so old now. I
- 11:56Speaker 6: guess Bono hasn't worn goggles for a long time. He
- 11:57Speaker 6: wears sunglasses.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Now he's just so cool because he's a rock star.
- 12:00Speaker 6: He has to wear sunglasses.
- 12:01Speaker 5: In his brain that he has to wear sunglasses.
- 12:03Speaker 6: No, he has a medical condition.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Oh, that's right.
- 12:06Speaker 6: I'm serious.
- 12:06Speaker 4: He does.
- 12:07Speaker 6: He has to wear the sunglasses. He's not just being
- 12:08Speaker 6: a rock star douchebag. He has to wear sunglasses. So
- 12:10Speaker 6: anybody out there judging him, you're an asshole too.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Too late.
- 12:14Speaker 6: I know, I'm an asshole too. I judge him all
- 12:15Speaker 6: the time. But he has a condition, motherfuckers.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Does he have like a doctor's note that he carries
- 12:20Speaker 8: with him at all times?
- 12:21Speaker 6: He had some kind of thing happen. I would look
- 12:22Speaker 6: it up on my phone, but it's not really worth it.
- 12:24Speaker 6: He had some medical condition. I'll vouch for him.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Does that also excuse his attitude?
- 12:30Speaker 6: No, he's an absolute asshole.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Oh, well.
- 12:34Speaker 5: He's, you know, he occasionally still writes a decent song.
- 12:37Speaker 6: I still wanted to give him credit for being a
- 12:38Speaker 6: decent humanitarian. Then I realized that you two go the
- 12:41Speaker 6: other way to dodge paying all their taxes. Or as
- 12:43Speaker 6: many taxes as possible.
- 12:45Speaker 5: That's kind of how most rock stars work, actually.
- 12:47Speaker 6: But they want all these big companies to pay their taxes.
- 12:49Speaker 6: But then they're like, oh, we're going to put our
- 12:51Speaker 6: company in. Because I guess they consider they can have
- 12:54Speaker 6: YouTube being a marketable brand or a company. And so
- 12:57Speaker 6: they put it in the... I think they're in Denmark
- 12:59Speaker 6: at this point. So they have to lease them out
- 13:00Speaker 6: of taxes as possible.
- 13:02Speaker 8: You just move next to Ringo Starr because that bastard
- 13:05Speaker 8: didn't pay anything.
- 13:06Speaker 6: I don't like Ringo Starr. Fuck him and Skechers. I
- 13:09Speaker 6: don't like Skechers either. He's pawing in Skechers. I'm making
- 13:12Speaker 6: a tie-in. It makes sense to me.
- 13:14Speaker 8: I'm just thinking how lame that is that he has
- 13:15Speaker 8: to paw in Skechers. He's out there hawking Skechers. What
- 13:20Speaker 8: the hell is that about? The world we live in.
- 13:23Speaker 6: Not even decent shoes. At least it's not Crocs.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Costumes. How about those giant wings?
- 13:32Speaker 6: It took me a while. I'm like, that's got to
- 13:34Speaker 6: be Jeepers Creepers. Fucking rowdy ass wings. The costume was
- 13:39Speaker 6: fucking amazing.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Those are pretty huge wingspan going on.
- 13:42Speaker 6: He had stilts. He was on stilts, too, which always
- 13:44Speaker 6: makes an elephant more impressive to me if you're on
- 13:45Speaker 6: stilts and have wings.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Because you're probably going to kill yourself for the days after.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I know.
- 13:50Speaker 6: And it makes it more interesting for me because I'm like,
- 13:52Speaker 6: when's it going to happen? Am I going to see it?
- 13:54Speaker 6: Should I have my camera ready? Faceplant. Is it coming
- 13:56Speaker 6: any second now? Son of a bitch, I missed it.
- 13:58Speaker 5: This really is how your brain goes most of the day.
- 14:01Speaker 6: It was.
- 14:01Speaker 5: This is the internal monologue going on.
- 14:03Speaker 6: You heard me when we walked by the wet metal
- 14:05Speaker 6: area where kids were running across. I'm like, oh, one
- 14:07Speaker 6: of them's going to do it. One of them's going
- 14:08Speaker 6: to face plant.
- 14:08Speaker 5: She was so excited waiting for those kids to fall
- 14:10Speaker 5: on their face.
- 14:11Speaker 6: I was. It never happened.
- 14:12Speaker 8: No, it really didn't. I mean, the parents weren't paying attention.
- 14:16Speaker 8: I really was kind of waiting for it, too, just
- 14:17Speaker 8: because kids are out of control.
- 14:18Speaker 5: You've got to watch them all the time.
- 14:20Speaker 6: I might have missed it when I was eating nachos.
- 14:21Speaker 5: That's true.
- 14:22Speaker 4: It happens.
- 14:23Speaker 6: Part of my thing was trying to figure out, like,
- 14:24Speaker 6: all right, is that person in costume or is that
- 14:26Speaker 6: just how they dress? Yeah.
- 14:27Speaker 8: That's become a game that you play at these events.
- 14:30Speaker 8: It's just kind of so if we weren't here.
- 14:34Speaker 6: It took five aisles of seeing the same guy to
- 14:37Speaker 6: realize he was being Dean from Supernatural.
- 14:40Speaker 8: I mean, outside of a few episodes, they do kind
- 14:43Speaker 8: of dress like normal dudes or bad FBI agents.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Well, that and the cold sore kept throwing me off.
- 14:47Speaker 5: I told you, if anybody's going to have one, it's Dean.
- 14:49Speaker 6: He's way too fucking pretty to have a cold sore.
- 14:51Speaker 6: He would get that shit taken care of. He would
- 14:54Speaker 6: have some kind of.
- 14:54Speaker 5: He'd get another one a week later, though.
- 14:56Speaker 6: He would have some kind of.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Whatever hot special guest girl was on the next week,
- 14:59Speaker 5: he'd get another one.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Fucking A. But yeah, I'm like, why is this guy... Oh,
- 15:05Speaker 6: it's Dean. He had the necklace. And he had the
- 15:08Speaker 6: demon-killing knife. And I'm like, pretty subtle, dude. He's walking
- 15:12Speaker 6: around by himself, so I'm wondering if everybody thinks he's
- 15:14Speaker 6: a loser walking around by himself. And it's like, is
- 15:17Speaker 6: that a spike? Or is that just some dude in
- 15:18Speaker 6: a trench coat?
- 15:19Speaker 8: I told you, the Gop is dying, man. It was
- 15:21Speaker 8: so mainstream for a while there that it kind of like...
- 15:24Speaker 8: flamed itself out it got really big to the point
- 15:26Speaker 8: where it was super mainstream and everybody made fun of
- 15:28Speaker 8: how mainstream it was and then now it's like it's
- 15:31Speaker 8: rare that you run into like hardcore gothy people the way.
- 15:33Speaker 5: You used to that's good.
- 15:35Speaker 8: Probably it probably needs it because again i think anybody
- 15:38Speaker 8: who was into it beforehand kind of hated how popular
- 15:41Speaker 8: it got i mean they're not the most joining group
- 15:43Speaker 8: of people anyway that's why they became god because they're
- 15:46Speaker 8: anti-social and they want to be different so when so
- 15:48Speaker 8: many people started doing it they were boring mainstream people
- 15:51Speaker 8: Probably made.
- 15:51Speaker 5: It no fun anymore.
- 15:52Speaker 6: When I was goth, I did it all wrong. I
- 15:54Speaker 6: had blonde hair. I was a blonde girl.
- 15:56Speaker 5: That's not right at all.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Everybody else was dying their hair black and black lipstick.
- 16:00Speaker 6: And I'm like, I don't want to do my hair.
- 16:02Speaker 6: I had pink stripes in it when I was in
- 16:04Speaker 6: high school still. I wish there were more burgundy. But yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 6: blonde and then some burgundy stripes, which eventually turned pink.
- 16:09Speaker 6: Maybe that's where it all came from. But I did
- 16:11Speaker 6: goth all wrong. In other words, I wore some Spice
- 16:15Speaker 6: Girls shoes.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you can't go wrong with Spice Girls.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Hell no, you can't.
- 16:19Speaker 5: You're all set with Spice Girls.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Fucking A. I was the weirdest goth kid there was.
- 16:24Speaker 5: You were just a mishmash of whatever.
- 16:25Speaker 8: You're like, what kind of weird stuff do I like today?
- 16:28Speaker 6: Hell yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Here we go.
- 16:31Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Roll this shit together. But, yeah, I love going to...
- 16:37Speaker 6: I didn't get any pictures with anybody in costume this year.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I'm still pretty excited I saw Stitch.
- 16:42Speaker 6: You never see a Stitch. I know.
- 16:43Speaker 5: It was a full-size, giant costume Stitch.
- 16:46Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 16:46Speaker 6: You just wanted to go cuddle with it, didn't you?
- 16:48Speaker 6: I kind of did, yeah. Why don't they have Stitch
- 16:50Speaker 6: as real animals now? I mean, they managed to modify
- 16:54Speaker 6: so many fucking things. Why is there not a real
- 16:56Speaker 6: life Stitch at this point?
- 16:57Speaker 5: Couldn't they mess with some sugar glider DNA?
- 17:00Speaker 6: Dude, don't even get me started. It was so hard
- 17:02Speaker 6: for me to not reach over there and just snatch
- 17:04Speaker 6: that motherfucker's sugar gliders and just run, run like the wind.
- 17:07Speaker 8: I did not expect to see live animals crawling around
- 17:10Speaker 8: on people today. Like, Tons of stuffed twins and giant
- 17:13Speaker 8: lizards on people's shoulders and stuffed monkeys and all that.
- 17:15Speaker 5: I expected, but there was actual live critters running around
- 17:18Speaker 5: on that dude.
- 17:19Speaker 6: They sell them at the mall for Christmas for fuck's sake.
- 17:21Speaker 6: It's not like it's a rare thing. They're not illegal
- 17:23Speaker 6: or anything.
- 17:23Speaker 8: It's usually not here, though, that you run into live
- 17:26Speaker 8: animals running around on people.
- 17:27Speaker 5: I guess this is a new market they're testing.
- 17:29Speaker 6: People around here have poor enough hygiene as it is
- 17:31Speaker 6: to introduce wildlife.
- 17:32Speaker 4: You don't want it living on them. It might actually
- 17:35Speaker 4: live on them.
- 17:36Speaker 6: I fucking love sugar gliders. Good lord. If I actually
- 17:38Speaker 6: liked the idea of pets, I would have an army
- 17:40Speaker 6: of them.
- 17:42Speaker 5: You just don't like the responsibility.
- 17:43Speaker 6: I don't. I don't like the responsibility.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Much like children.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I don't like the responsibility of having to feed them
- 17:48Speaker 6: and clean them and emotional attachment. I have issues.
- 17:52Speaker 5: You really don't need to have children, by the way.
- 17:53Speaker 6: I don't, which is why I don't. I'm aware of this.
- 17:55Speaker 5: I appreciate it. Believe me.
- 17:57Speaker 8: Many a time, I look at people and go, you
- 17:59Speaker 8: don't need to have kids. You don't need to have kids.
- 18:02Speaker 5: I'm always actually really appreciative of people who.
- 18:04Speaker 8: Know that and they just don't because so many people
- 18:08Speaker 8: in this country and probably the world over Continue to
- 18:10Speaker 8: crank out kids for no real reason.
- 18:12Speaker 6: Sure, eventually I will change my mind. Which, of course,
- 18:14Speaker 6: by then I'll probably be too late.
- 18:15Speaker 4: But you'll have 40 sugar gliders.
- 18:17Speaker 5: It'll be okay.
- 18:17Speaker 6: But I'm like, I have so much stuff. To whom
- 18:19Speaker 6: am I going to pass on my collection of shit? Me.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Assuming I don't kick off first.
- 18:24Speaker 6: Dudes die first.
- 18:25Speaker 5: I might not make it through the week, so.
- 18:27Speaker 6: I'm going to leave. There's been so many times I'm like, dude,
- 18:30Speaker 6: if you die, will me that? And you're like, no,
- 18:31Speaker 6: fuck you. So, I mean.
- 18:33Speaker 5: I just assume you'll take it anyway.
- 18:35Speaker 6: How am I going to get your NXS shirt?
- 18:37Speaker 5: I told you I'm getting buried in it.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Fucker. There was something else recently I was told by
- 18:43Speaker 6: a boyfriend. I'm like, no, it was Marlena and her
- 18:45Speaker 6: squish pennies. I'm like....
- 18:47Speaker 5: See, you've got all the ones I've got because we
- 18:49Speaker 5: went to the same places.
- 18:50Speaker 6: I don't have a Schimpf's one.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Okay, I guess you can have that one. It's just
- 18:55Speaker 5: as easy for you to go down the street and
- 18:57Speaker 5: get one.
- 18:57Speaker 8: I could.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Well, squish pennies, which has nothing to do with the convention.
- 19:03Speaker 6: But if anybody out there wants to send me any
- 19:04Speaker 6: squish pennies, I will gladly reimburse you in non-flat money.
- 19:08Speaker 5: She does like squish pennies.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I do, I do, I do.
- 19:10Speaker 5: She's got a problem.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Not enough squish pennies is my problem.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Not only is she buying them from places she's never been,
- 19:16Speaker 8: but places in other lands.
- 19:19Speaker 5: You recruited other people from the show to get you some.
- 19:22Speaker 4: You've got connections now.
- 19:23Speaker 6: I was so excited that day. Like, what's-her-face is in Germany?
- 19:26Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, she needs to bring me a penny.
- 19:28Speaker 6: And she did, and it was awesome. Thank you, Christian. See,
- 19:31Speaker 6: she has a name, not just what's-her-face.
- 19:34Speaker 5: I'm sure she appreciates it.
- 19:35Speaker 6: I told her this story already, so she already knows
- 19:37Speaker 6: that I referred to her as what's-her-face. It's not going
- 19:38Speaker 6: to be news. I told her to her face. It's
- 19:41Speaker 6: like a person I am.
- 19:41Speaker 5: To her what's-her-face.
- 19:45Speaker 6: I will never say anything about anybody behind their back
- 19:47Speaker 6: that I will not say to their face.
- 19:48Speaker 5: That's usually how I try to do it.
- 19:49Speaker 8: It's like, I don't know. If I'm going to bother
- 19:51Speaker 8: and make fun of somebody, it's no fun if they're
- 19:52Speaker 8: not there.
- 19:56Speaker 6: At least sometimes I just do it when their back's turned.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Like random people.
- 20:01Speaker 8: If it's people I know, that's just kind of a
- 20:04Speaker 8: jerky move. If it's just random passersby, come on. We
- 20:07Speaker 8: all make fun of those.
- 20:08Speaker 6: Flip flops and socks. Who the fuck wears flip flops
- 20:10Speaker 6: and socks? I'm talking about you, random guy at the
- 20:13Speaker 6: fucking convention.
- 20:14Speaker 4: You.
- 20:14Speaker 6: You wore the flip flops and socks. You should feel bad.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Public service announcement, people.
- 20:20Speaker 6: No flip flops and socks. Or sandals in any variety.
- 20:22Speaker 5: I kind of agree on that.
- 20:24Speaker 6: No socks.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Just cover your feet. Nobody needs to see.
- 20:27Speaker 2: In general.
- 20:28Speaker 4: It's not good.
- 20:29Speaker 6: Toes are weird.
- 20:29Speaker 4: We all know it's not good.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Cover that up.
- 20:32Speaker 6: The person behind us is doing stretches and kung fu.
- 20:34Speaker 6: What the fuck just happened?
- 20:36Speaker 5: That kung fu master from the contest earlier.
- 20:37Speaker 6: You know what? Some weird lady.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Maybe she's doing some sort of power yoga.
- 20:42Speaker 6: She's doing construction. I haven't figured it out yet.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Is she working on this building?
- 20:45Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Well, we also saw lots of awesome artwork while we
- 20:48Speaker 5: were there.
- 20:49Speaker 6: We did. We did.
- 20:50Speaker 5: We did. And met a cool artist who we actually
- 20:53Speaker 5: sat down and talked with.
- 20:55Speaker 6: I wasn't there. I was there earlier, but I won't
- 20:59Speaker 6: be there later.
- 21:00Speaker 8: You met him earlier, but you have your antisocial issues,
- 21:03Speaker 8: so it was best that you not hang out and
- 21:05Speaker 8: talk for.
- 21:05Speaker 6: The whole bulk of it. I spoke to him briefly.
- 21:07Speaker 5: And you didn't even say anything too horrible.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Because I stress about that. I'm going to go home
- 21:11Speaker 6: and I'm going to lay in bed all night and
- 21:13Speaker 6: be like, did I say anything that made me seem
- 21:15Speaker 6: too retarded?
- 21:15Speaker 8: I'm giving you my stamp of approval. You were actually
- 21:18Speaker 8: presentable in public, which I cannot always say.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Well, they usually have to okay it with boyfriend. I'm like,
- 21:22Speaker 6: Did I say anything too stupid? Are they going to
- 21:24Speaker 6: think I'm retarded? Do they think I'm mentally challenged? Because
- 21:26Speaker 6: that's a good possibility.
- 21:26Speaker 8: I mean, that's still up for grabs, really. It's questionable, yes,
- 21:31Speaker 8: but you didn't say anything too stupid.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Did I come up as an asshole?
- 21:36Speaker 5: That's pretty standard, too.
- 21:37Speaker 6: No, I mean like regular. No, seriously, what is she
- 21:40Speaker 6: doing behind us? Look behind us. Look behind us. I
- 21:43Speaker 6: can't see.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I can't see. It's in the wrong spot.
- 21:48Speaker 4: If I had one of those.
- 21:49Speaker 10: Right here.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Now she's going to see you seeing her.
- 21:53Speaker 4: You're doing it wrong.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Your spying skills suck.
- 21:57Speaker 6: I can see her just fine.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Are you recording? Why don't you take pictures of this nonsense?
- 22:03Speaker 6: Look behind us right now.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Okay, she's a freak. Remember those people that we don't
- 22:11Speaker 5: know that we said it's okay to make fun of?
- 22:13Speaker 5: It's that one right there. This woman doing calisthenics on
- 22:18Speaker 5: a rooftop in the middle.
- 22:20Speaker 9: Of the night.
- 22:23Speaker 6: Oh, my Lord. I'm not even making it up. I
- 22:24Speaker 6: can't even get my camera out fast enough.
- 22:26Speaker 2: What is wrong with people?
- 22:28Speaker 6: I think her friend was taking pictures of her in
- 22:29Speaker 6: oppositions on a roof in the middle of the night.
- 22:31Speaker 6: That's not weird. Fucking weirdo. What kind of weirdo hanging
- 22:33Speaker 6: out on the roof after dark?
- 22:35Speaker 5: Oh, wait.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Oh, no one keep that low.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Nothing right here and now. And if you don't know
- 22:42Speaker 5: now what.
- 22:43Speaker 4: I'm talking about.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Oh, we're gonna shout it from the rooftop.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yes, folks, it's intermission time. So how about taking a break?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Get out and stretch a little and relax before the
- 23:23Speaker 2: show begins again.
- 23:24Speaker 11: This episode is brought to you by Crosley Turntables. Starting
- 23:27Speaker 11: back in 1920, the Crosley Company produced the first low-priced
- 23:30Speaker 11: radio for the general public. And ever since, they've been
- 23:32Speaker 11: working to provide innovative and affordable electronics. And that tradition
- 23:36Speaker 11: continues today as Crosley works to expand their product line,
- 23:39Speaker 11: creating vintage-inspired electronics featuring the latest technologies, such as iPod decks, Bluetooth,
- 23:44Speaker 11: and MP3 capabilities. So to find out more about their turntables,
- 23:48Speaker 11: just go to CrosleyRadio.com. There you'll find everything from the
- 23:51Speaker 11: players themselves to replacement needles and even records. Again, that's CrosleyRadio.com,
- 23:56Speaker 11: so head over there now and pick out which turntable
- 23:58Speaker 11: you need.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Creepers, creepers, where'd you get those creepers?
- 24:06Speaker 1: Creepers, creepers, where'd you get those eyes?
- 24:10Speaker 8: Hey, Creeper fans out there, this is Jonathan Breck, and
- 24:13Speaker 8: you are listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize.
- 24:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Where'd you get those eyes?
- 24:22Speaker 10: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Blah, blah, blah.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it
- 24:30Speaker 2: easy to rent for any event, business meeting, or special occasion.
- 24:33Speaker 2: From PA systems to karaoke machines to just about anything
- 24:36Speaker 2: that makes noise, you can rent it from the Doo-Wop Shop.
- 24:39Speaker 2: In Louisville, find them either at their Highland Store at
- 24:41Speaker 2: 1587 Bardstown Road or in the East End at 2915
- 24:46Speaker 2: South Hurstburn Parkway. And look for them online at DooWopShop.com.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music. It's part of your problem,
- 24:56Speaker 2: you know.
- 24:56Speaker 6: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 24:57Speaker 2: All of life's riddles.
- 24:59Speaker 9: Are answered in the movies.
- 25:01Speaker 6: And now, on with the show.
- 25:31Speaker 10: Give me one more chance and you'll be satisfied. Give
- 25:39Speaker 10: me two more chances, you won't be denied.
- 25:43Speaker 9: My heart is where it's always been. My head is
- 25:51Speaker 9: somewhere in between. Give me one more chance, let me.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Be your lover tonight.
- 26:04Speaker 5: So we met Epion5, who is one of the artists
- 26:07Speaker 5: here and is actually really cool. I noticed he was
- 26:10Speaker 5: coming back because I'd seen him at a convention earlier
- 26:12Speaker 5: this year, and I remembered the artwork.
- 26:14Speaker 8: It's the kind of stuff I usually respond to anyway,
- 26:16Speaker 8: but I also thought it was interesting how much of
- 26:19Speaker 8: it was tied to mostly movies. So I was like, okay, well,
- 26:23Speaker 8: as we get back in here, it's like, let's go
- 26:25Speaker 8: talk to him. So let's go talk to him right now.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Give me half a.
- 26:32Speaker 9: Chance to ride on the waves that you bring.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I really want them to bring back the microphones that
- 26:41Speaker 4: you saw in the 70s on game shows where it
- 26:44Speaker 4: was like the telescoping with the really tiny.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I think Jimmy Fallon uses one.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Of those now. I haven't seen Jimmy Fallon. I try not.
- 26:52Speaker 5: I don't hate him.
- 26:53Speaker 4: But he's not. I just don't watch TV more for
- 26:55Speaker 4: the most part.
- 26:57Speaker 5: See, again, I like talk shows, obviously, but now that
- 27:00Speaker 5: Letterman's gone.
- 27:02Speaker 8: like i was so i mean it was just most
- 27:04Speaker 8: of my growing up was like okay.
- 27:06Speaker 4: I still have not seen the last episode.
- 27:10Speaker 8: It was rough yeah i don't think i really like
- 27:12Speaker 8: going into it i'm like oh yeah that sucks and
- 27:14Speaker 8: then like that last one i was like shit like
- 27:17Speaker 8: that was so much a chunk.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Of my life every night.
- 27:20Speaker 4: The humor was uh it's you know all the people
- 27:24Speaker 4: that i hung out with it was all always letterman.
- 27:26Speaker 8: And it's finding that. There's other people in other comics,
- 27:31Speaker 8: but if you fall into his little groove, it's the
- 27:35Speaker 8: best thing. You get the running jokes night after night.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I had a fanboy moment out in New York two
- 27:42Speaker 4: years ago because I was at the booth doing my
- 27:45Speaker 4: thing and Jerry Lawler walked by. The king. He looked
- 27:51Speaker 4: at my artwork and then I realized, oh shit, that's
- 27:54Speaker 4: Jerry Lawler. And I'm not a wrestling fan at all.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I was going to ask because I have a tie-in
- 27:58Speaker 4: when you're done. And I was like, can I shake
- 28:01Speaker 4: your hand? And he's like, yeah. And I shook his
- 28:04Speaker 4: hand and I kept thinking, this is the hand that
- 28:07Speaker 4: slapped Andy Kaufman. That's all I cared about.
- 28:10Speaker 5: That's an awesome tie-in, actually.
- 28:12Speaker 2: It's time for another installment of The Art of Being
- 28:16Speaker 2: a Movie Geek.
- 28:17Speaker 5: I guess you're okay with the term geek. Yeah, we
- 28:20Speaker 5: embrace it on this.
- 28:21Speaker 8: But just because the art segment, as we roll into it,
- 28:24Speaker 8: is the art of being a movie geek.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I got to tell you, last night when we were
- 28:28Speaker 4: leaving the convention, Katrina and I, we were going down
- 28:31Speaker 4: the escalator down to the lobby here. And I didn't
- 28:35Speaker 4: realize that everybody was lined up for the costume contest.
- 28:38Speaker 4: And I just looked at her and I was like,
- 28:39Speaker 4: Jesus Christ, what a bunch of nerds. She was like,
- 28:44Speaker 4: these are our people. And I'm like, yes, I know,
- 28:46Speaker 4: but they're a bunch of nerds. We are, yeah. And
- 28:49Speaker 4: then I realized, oh, costume contest, right.
- 28:51Speaker 5: These are like the advanced group of nerds.
- 28:53Speaker 10: Yes.
- 28:54Speaker 5: These are the ones that put extra, way more time
- 28:56Speaker 5: into it.
- 28:57Speaker 4: God bless them.
- 28:58Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 4: But yeah, I'm totally fine with nerds, geeks, whatever.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Which I distinguish very, some people use them interchangeably.
- 29:05Speaker 4: I have, you know, nerd, geek.
- 29:07Speaker 5: These are all very specific to me.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 8: But I've certainly embraced geek, and I fall into that category.
- 29:14Speaker 8: And one of the main ones that came along for
- 29:16Speaker 8: me was art. So for you, I guess, let's start
- 29:19Speaker 8: super early on. What was the art thing that put
- 29:24Speaker 8: its hooks into you?
- 29:25Speaker 4: I have a story for you about art. And basically
- 29:29Speaker 4: knowing very early on life lessons and that, okay, I
- 29:33Speaker 4: fall into a certain category that's kind of outside the
- 29:36Speaker 4: Venn diagram, I guess. I don't know. So it was... uh,
- 29:39Speaker 4: it was pretty sure I'm writing out there with you.
- 29:41Speaker 4: It was third grade. And, uh, um, there was a
- 29:45Speaker 4: contest that, uh, my classroom had, which was everybody got
- 29:49Speaker 4: to draw whatever they wanted and the class would vote on,
- 29:53Speaker 4: on the best drawing. And then the art teacher was
- 29:55Speaker 4: going to paint that as a mural on the wall
- 29:56Speaker 4: for all, all eternity. So I was like, Yes, this
- 30:00Speaker 4: is amazing. So third grade, this would be 1982 for
- 30:03Speaker 4: me because I'm kind of little.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I'm older.
- 30:06Speaker 4: I'm an old man. So 1982, 82 slash 83. So
- 30:07Speaker 4: I drew a an epic battle scene between barbarians and gargoyles. So,
- 30:19Speaker 4: I mean, there was a castle. There was basically muscle
- 30:22Speaker 4: dudes with loincloths and swords. I know all about some
- 30:24Speaker 4: of this. Gargoyles. There was beheadings.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Very nice.
- 30:27Speaker 4: You know? And I was, like, the resident artist of
- 30:30Speaker 4: the class. So it really didn't matter what I did.
- 30:32Speaker 4: People liked it, you know? Because they're like, oh, what
- 30:35Speaker 4: did you draw today? Already winning people over with your art. So,
- 30:38Speaker 4: you know... I drew that. Other people just drew, like,
- 30:42Speaker 4: you know, Strawberry Shortcake. One girl drew the Smurf village,
- 30:47Speaker 4: you know. That's a mural nobody wants. I know. Time
- 30:51Speaker 4: came for voting, and the teachers came in, and everybody voted.
- 30:54Speaker 4: And the teachers looked at the pages of the votes,
- 30:57Speaker 4: and they had, like, a look on their face, like,
- 30:59Speaker 4: you know, the furrowed eyebrow. And they're like, okay, the
- 31:02Speaker 4: winner is the Smurf village, everybody. And I was like, bullshit, what?
- 31:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:08Speaker 4: I want a recount. I know. So I was like,
- 31:11Speaker 4: I was upset. And I actually went to people. I'm like,
- 31:14Speaker 4: so did you? And they're like, yeah, we voted for yours.
- 31:16Speaker 4: You were polling kids. I was polling kids. And I
- 31:19Speaker 4: found out that basically everybody did vote for me. And
- 31:23Speaker 4: that was my first life lesson where I actually learned that,
- 31:26Speaker 4: you know what? Life's kind of bullshit. And no matter
- 31:29Speaker 4: how hard you try, it's going to knock you down.
- 31:31Speaker 5: The man is against you.
- 31:32Speaker 4: The man is against you.
- 31:34Speaker 5: And yeah, no matter what, got to have your defenses up.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:38Speaker 4: I learned then and there that I was not going
- 31:42Speaker 4: to be like the football players.
- 31:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 5: We all learned that relatively early, I'm assuming.
- 31:48Speaker 4: That was 1982 for me. That's when I became an adult. So,
- 31:53Speaker 4: I guess.
- 31:55Speaker 8: At that point, it was probably crayons, but were you
- 31:58Speaker 8: drawn towards a specific medium at that point, early on?
- 32:01Speaker 4: Early on, it was paint and pens and anything I
- 32:05Speaker 4: could find, actually. I actually started drawing and just everything
- 32:09Speaker 4: I could when I was even just a young child.
- 32:13Speaker 4: My very first memory, I think a lot of kids
- 32:15Speaker 4: today would be very jealous of, because I was born
- 32:17Speaker 4: in 74. So in 1977, Star Wars came out. I've
- 32:22Speaker 4: told a version of this story.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:23Speaker 4: I was three years old, and I saw it. My
- 32:26Speaker 4: mother took me, and I vividly remember actually seeing it.
- 32:29Speaker 4: And from then on out, it was just all sci-fi robots, monsters.
- 32:35Speaker 4: My mom still has the drawings that I did of
- 32:37Speaker 4: C-3PO and R2-D2 as a kid.
- 32:40Speaker 5: I think it helped.
- 32:41Speaker 8: And I just recently have started thinking about this. I'm like,
- 32:44Speaker 8: And maybe that's why Star Wars has such a universal
- 32:47Speaker 8: appeal in general.
- 32:48Speaker 5: But especially for kids. Because it almost doesn't make sense sometimes.
- 32:52Speaker 8: I've watched on this new wave, the post-prequel wave, I've
- 32:57Speaker 8: watched these little kids that still come up, don't have
- 33:00Speaker 8: that nostalgia for it the first time around, still discover.
- 33:04Speaker 5: It, and are still so attached to it.
- 33:06Speaker 8: Maybe part of it is because there is a simplicity
- 33:08Speaker 8: to it, that even when you're a little kid, you
- 33:11Speaker 8: can take two... X's and make it an X-wing. And, like,
- 33:15Speaker 8: you can draw a TIE fighter with a circle and
- 33:17Speaker 8: some sticks. And, like, it's so easy to kind of
- 33:20Speaker 8: recreate those.
- 33:21Speaker 4: In Ewok, you just draw a teddy bear and put
- 33:23Speaker 4: a hood on it, and there you go.
- 33:24Speaker 8: And even, like, especially, again, people get hard, but, like,
- 33:27Speaker 8: there's droids in this. And, like, R2, most people could
- 33:30Speaker 8: probably put together a decent.
- 33:31Speaker 5: R2, you know?
- 33:32Speaker 4: It's a trash can.
- 33:33Speaker 5: I think that's part of it.
- 33:34Speaker 4: It's kind of like Doctor Who with the Daleks. I mean,
- 33:37Speaker 4: it's a salt and pepper shaker.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Just slap some stuff together and call it a droid.
- 33:40Speaker 8: But, yeah, I think that's part of it, is that
- 33:43Speaker 8: if it were really, really hard to do any of
- 33:45Speaker 8: this stuff, you might be discouraged.
- 33:47Speaker 5: But I think kids are.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Drawn to that. You mean like the new Transformers? Have
- 33:50Speaker 4: you seen, you know? No, I haven't.
- 33:54Speaker 5: I'm a couple behind. I went and saw the first one.
- 33:56Speaker 5: I was like, I like Transformers, sure. Michael, I think
- 34:00Speaker 5: I remember him.
- 34:00Speaker 2: No.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Oh, my God.
- 34:02Speaker 8: It's... I try not to hate for the sake of
- 34:05Speaker 8: hating it.
- 34:06Speaker 5: I try to give him a chance. But, like, his...
- 34:08Speaker 5: style of filmmaking i love i.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Love robots but when they fight i can't tell what's
- 34:13Speaker 4: going on it's literally like it's like a junkyard it's
- 34:17Speaker 4: like an earthquake at a junkyard is what it looks
- 34:19Speaker 4: like it's just.
- 34:20Speaker 8: He doesn't know how to shoot a fight scene and
- 34:22Speaker 8: that's most of his movies at this point are nothing
- 34:24Speaker 8: but giant robotic fight scenes and i'm like if you're
- 34:28Speaker 8: good there are so many people out there that are
- 34:30Speaker 8: good at that like you need to be able to
- 34:32Speaker 8: Figure out your environment.
- 34:33Speaker 5: When you're the viewer, you need to be able to like, okay,
- 34:35Speaker 5: I know where they are.
- 34:36Speaker 4: There's choreography involved for a good fight.
- 34:38Speaker 8: And just laying it out so you understand where the
- 34:41Speaker 8: people are and what's going on with each step.
- 34:44Speaker 4: If you can't dance, it's not going to be a
- 34:45Speaker 4: good fight.
- 34:46Speaker 8: He will spin it 360 degrees at all times and
- 34:48Speaker 8: you'll never be able to get an idea of what's
- 34:50Speaker 8: going on.
- 34:51Speaker 5: It's just bad dance.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Bad filmmaking.
- 34:53Speaker 4: But the simplicity, though, like you had mentioned in Star
- 34:56Speaker 4: Wars and other stuff, yeah, it's long-lasting.
- 34:58Speaker 5: But the old Transformers, like, you could draw a truck.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Everybody remembers the old Transformers.
- 35:01Speaker 8: You know, you could draw a truck and put a
- 35:03Speaker 8: head on him, and, you know, it was probably a
- 35:06Speaker 8: lot easier to piece together, where now I can't draw
- 35:09Speaker 8: the Michael Bay nonsense.
- 35:11Speaker 5: I wouldn't really try to, but it's hard to draw CG.
- 35:15Speaker 6: I guess.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it is. I got a little secret here. I
- 35:18Speaker 4: actually worked on one of the Transformer movies.
- 35:20Speaker 5: Which one?
- 35:22Speaker 4: The third one, which I forget the title of it.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Rise of the Monkeys? No, Dark of the Moon.
- 35:29Speaker 8: Dark's not side, because they didn't want to get sued.
- 35:33Speaker 8: Dark of the Moon, which sounds like an incomplete title.
- 35:35Speaker 4: They were filming it in Chicago. I had a friend
- 35:37Speaker 4: who was working on the set, and she knew the
- 35:40Speaker 4: art director. And so she showed him some work, and
- 35:43Speaker 4: he asked if I would like to do some graphic design.
- 35:45Speaker 4: And I was like, yeah, sure, whatever. It was actually
- 35:47Speaker 4: a very nice paying gig.
- 35:48Speaker 5: That's what I was going to say. I mean, that's
- 35:50Speaker 5: a main studio project. I'd be taking that job, too.
- 35:54Speaker 4: I mean, it was it was pretty fun because what
- 35:57Speaker 4: I was amazed of is just how they paid you
- 35:59Speaker 4: because I actually was never in an office. It was
- 36:02Speaker 4: all through email, you.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Know, which is the way things are now.
- 36:05Speaker 4: They would send me, hey, can you do this? And
- 36:07Speaker 4: I would do some designs and email it back to them.
- 36:10Speaker 4: And then they said, well, Michael doesn't like this or
- 36:11Speaker 4: he likes that.
- 36:12Speaker 6: And.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And then they'd say, they'd pick something and they'd say, oh,
- 36:16Speaker 4: send us an invoice of how many hours you worked.
- 36:18Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, I worked 50 hours on this.
- 36:21Speaker 8: That's what kills me is how much, like you see
- 36:23Speaker 8: how much money they blow on these and then don't
- 36:26Speaker 8: really even make use of because a friend of mine
- 36:29Speaker 8: and he's been on the show years ago that was like,
- 36:32Speaker 8: he's a set dresser and has worked for years and
- 36:34Speaker 8: years and will tell me stories about like spending hours
- 36:38Speaker 8: and hours like building this tiny like set with all
- 36:41Speaker 8: these little pieces and like, It's in the background of
- 36:44Speaker 8: the background of a shot that they cut out. And
- 36:46Speaker 8: I'm like, how many hundreds of thousands of dollars did
- 36:49Speaker 8: they blow on this kind of.
- 36:50Speaker 5: Stuff that never gets seen?
- 36:52Speaker 4: Happens all the time.
- 36:52Speaker 8: And, you know, guys, like, you put tons of hours
- 36:55Speaker 8: of work into it. Maybe not as many as you
- 36:56Speaker 8: told them, but tons of hours of work into it. And, like,
- 36:59Speaker 8: it just all falls away.
- 37:00Speaker 5: I'm just like.
- 37:01Speaker 4: And it's weird. The process of how they choose. I
- 37:03Speaker 4: don't understand it, really. It's like I had one job
- 37:06Speaker 4: that they wanted to do. I had to design a
- 37:08Speaker 4: NASA patch for one of their fake missions.
- 37:10Speaker 5: Which I always loved those as a kid.
- 37:12Speaker 8: Sure.
- 37:13Speaker 4: And I looked up old NASA patches, and I did
- 37:16Speaker 4: this design that I thought would be perfect. I sent
- 37:18Speaker 4: it to them thinking, well, this one's good. It's everything
- 37:20Speaker 4: they want. And they're like, no, no, we don't like it.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Do this. So I kept changing, and I think I
- 37:24Speaker 4: did like five variations. And then in the end, Michael
- 37:27Speaker 4: Bay looked at it, and he was like, we'll do
- 37:29Speaker 4: the first one. I was like, that's fine. I'm still
- 37:32Speaker 4: going to charge you.
- 37:32Speaker 5: And you build them for all those other variations.
- 37:34Speaker 4: I'm going to, yeah. Yep. That's how that works.
- 37:38Speaker 8: Yeah, I just like, I look at it and I go,
- 37:40Speaker 8: people complain about, you know, big Hollywood movies. And I'm like,
- 37:43Speaker 8: it's only big Hollywood movies. Cause we let it get
- 37:45Speaker 8: to this point where we're just throwing away money. And like,
- 37:49Speaker 8: you see people with, you know, independent films and like,
- 37:52Speaker 8: they put every dollar on the screen and they're smart
- 37:55Speaker 8: about the way they make a film.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Studios.
- 37:57Speaker 8: Like they're so like, Oh, we don't want to make,
- 37:59Speaker 8: they don't make near as many movies as they used to.
- 38:01Speaker 5: They're tightening the belts. But I'm like, if you would
- 38:03Speaker 5: just make them smart and not throw money away, like,
- 38:07Speaker 5: I don't understand that, but whatever.
- 38:09Speaker 8: I mean, I'll take their money if they want to
- 38:11Speaker 8: throw me one of those checks for a set amount
- 38:14Speaker 8: of hours, in quotes.
- 38:15Speaker 4: I will totally write them an invoice. I'll hook you
- 38:18Speaker 4: up with that.
- 38:19Speaker 5: I'll take some of that.
- 38:21Speaker 8: It's big studio funding. That's what we're looking for. We
- 38:23Speaker 8: may or may not trash your movie, but please send
- 38:26Speaker 8: us a check.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I still haven't seen the third one. You're not missing much.
- 38:30Speaker 5: The second was kind of a nightmare.
- 38:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I.
- 38:34Speaker 4: I sat in the theater for the first three ones,
- 38:36Speaker 4: and I didn't see the last one with the Dinobots, right?
- 38:40Speaker 4: I knew there were Dinobots.
- 38:41Speaker 8: I kind of want to come back because Marky Mark
- 38:43Speaker 8: and Transformers, for sheer what-the-hell-is-going-on.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Value, I kind of feel like I want to see
- 38:48Speaker 5: that one.
- 38:49Speaker 4: I would only see it if Marky Mark was reprising
- 38:51Speaker 4: his character from the movie Fearless, is that? Or Fear?
- 38:54Speaker 8: Yeah, Fear.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Fear, yeah, that's what it was.
- 38:56Speaker 8: I was hoping he'd go like Renaissance Man or something.
- 39:00Speaker 8: His early roles he doesn't speak of anymore.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a shame.
- 39:04Speaker 4: All right.
- 39:05Speaker 8: So I guess at what point did you start trying
- 39:08Speaker 8: to make art a thing that would also make money,
- 39:12Speaker 8: which has become a fight.
- 39:14Speaker 5: I realized with all artists, it's like, that's your fight.
- 39:17Speaker 8: Like I, I can make art whenever I want, but
- 39:19Speaker 8: now how do I get it to be my life?
- 39:22Speaker 4: You know, that's, the big battle. It's a good question,
- 39:24Speaker 4: and it's a weird journey. Yeah, so I was doing
- 39:27Speaker 4: art in elementary school, and I got to a point
- 39:33Speaker 4: shortly after high school where– well, actually, it was kind
- 39:36Speaker 4: of– I guess it was during high school, too, where
- 39:39Speaker 4: I just got tired of it. I actually did not
- 39:41Speaker 4: want to be an artist. I didn't want to be
- 39:42Speaker 4: called an artist. I just– I wanted nothing to do
- 39:45Speaker 4: with it. I think everybody goes through that, so– the
- 39:48Speaker 4: backlash and uh then i got to college and and
- 39:51Speaker 4: i was like okay well i'm only good at one
- 39:53Speaker 4: thing which is art so damn it and so i
- 39:55Speaker 4: was like well i guess i will uh i'll do
- 39:57Speaker 4: that i'll take some art classes and uh so i
- 40:00Speaker 4: started getting back into it at that point and in
- 40:03Speaker 4: college though my focus ended up being oil painting and
- 40:06Speaker 4: like traditional renaissance style realism yeah which is uh that's
- 40:11Speaker 4: quite a it's that's that's nuts because that's no way
- 40:15Speaker 4: to make a living honestly I mean, not now. No.
- 40:19Speaker 4: I graduated. I checked the classifieds. Nobody's looking for Renaissance-style
- 40:22Speaker 4: oil painters.
- 40:23Speaker 5: If it were the Renaissance, you might be doing okay.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I know.
- 40:27Speaker 8: There's churches out there lining up for you to come
- 40:29Speaker 8: do stuff.
- 40:30Speaker 4: You mentioned the churches. My favorite painter is a guy
- 40:33Speaker 4: by the name of Caravaggio, who was, in all reality,
- 40:37Speaker 4: a total asshole. the guy, any artist, but he did
- 40:41Speaker 4: a lot of religious paintings for churches, but he was
- 40:44Speaker 4: not a religious guy. He was a drunkard. He would
- 40:46Speaker 4: get in fights. Uh, the subject matter, he would use his, uh,
- 40:49Speaker 4: hooker prostitute friends.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Come model for me.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:53Speaker 4: And Virgin Mary, supposedly he killed somebody and then was
- 40:56Speaker 4: on the run. And, and, but, uh, you know, the
- 40:59Speaker 4: churches back then they needed artwork to convey messages because
- 41:02Speaker 4: most people couldn't read. Yeah. So yeah, that would have been,
- 41:05Speaker 4: that would have been the best time to be an
- 41:06Speaker 4: oil painter.
- 41:08Speaker 8: And then, uh, Well, I usually ask this question because
- 41:13Speaker 8: it's varying degrees in the answer here. So how much,
- 41:17Speaker 8: I guess, college was where you started doing real studying?
- 41:20Speaker 4: That's where I started to buckle down, I guess.
- 41:24Speaker 5: Did you find that part was useful?
- 41:27Speaker 4: For me, yes. And honestly, it's kind of funny. Originally,
- 41:31Speaker 4: I was supposed to go to one of the Chicago
- 41:33Speaker 4: art schools, which are very expensive.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Pretty well respected.
- 41:36Speaker 4: They are very expensive.
- 41:38Speaker 8: I guess.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Depends on which one. Depends on what, yeah. So I
- 41:41Speaker 4: got in. I was actually going to go with a
- 41:42Speaker 4: couple guys that were also artists that I knew. So
- 41:45Speaker 4: I got in, and the only way you can possibly
- 41:48Speaker 4: go is through financial aid and loans. So what happened
- 41:51Speaker 4: was my financial aid didn't come through. My loans didn't
- 41:54Speaker 4: come through. I had no money, and so I actually
- 41:57Speaker 4: had to drop out before it even began. So I
- 41:59Speaker 4: dropped out, and I was like, well, shit, I have
- 42:01Speaker 4: no idea what I'm going to do. I'll just go
- 42:04Speaker 4: to community college, right? Like all the other kids. That's...
- 42:08Speaker 4: That's what you do. But honestly, that was the best
- 42:10Speaker 4: thing that happened for me. Cause, uh, the, I went
- 42:12Speaker 4: to Indiana university Northwest and they had this like a
- 42:16Speaker 4: building that was solely dedicated to art, theater, and music.
- 42:19Speaker 4: And all the art classes were kind of combined. I mean,
- 42:22Speaker 4: they were interlocking. So if you were in the painting studio,
- 42:25Speaker 4: you could look across and see the sculpture studio, their
- 42:27Speaker 4: photography studio, that couches everywhere. So everybody just hung out and, uh,
- 42:31Speaker 4: all the professors had such a small, uh, classroom that
- 42:35Speaker 4: they could, they actually knew your name and they would
- 42:37Speaker 4: work with you individually.
- 42:39Speaker 5: Probably different than most big schools out there.
- 42:41Speaker 4: It was the best experience I had. I actually, I
- 42:44Speaker 4: learned a lot from my professors. And as you progress,
- 42:47Speaker 4: you eventually got into independent study where you got to
- 42:51Speaker 4: do whatever you want and they would let you basically
- 42:54Speaker 4: do it. They would meet with you every week and
- 42:56Speaker 4: they would ask, okay, what are you doing? Why are
- 42:57Speaker 4: you doing this? Tell us. And even if you're doing
- 43:00Speaker 4: it for the wrong reasons, they would still let you
- 43:02Speaker 4: do it because you're going to learn something. So, It was,
- 43:07Speaker 4: the community college is the best thing that ever happened
- 43:10Speaker 4: to me as far as art is concerned. I'm sure
- 43:11Speaker 4: there's probably some out there that have some shitty art classes,
- 43:14Speaker 4: but at least IUN had fantastic art classes.
- 43:19Speaker 5: I think, again, some of it's just talking to people.
- 43:22Speaker 8: Some of it's what little art I have done, but
- 43:23Speaker 8: I'm like, I think some of it is just the
- 43:25Speaker 8: doing it and the excuse to do it. Whether you're
- 43:29Speaker 8: self-motivated enough to do it have the excuse to do
- 43:32Speaker 8: it all on your own is probably fine. If you're
- 43:34Speaker 8: willing to put in that much work on your own,
- 43:36Speaker 8: you'll probably learn a lot too.
- 43:38Speaker 5: But most people don't.
- 43:40Speaker 4: The couches that they had there helped out because you'd work,
- 43:42Speaker 4: you'd get tired. Rather than just go home, I'd sleep
- 43:45Speaker 4: on a couch, wake up later and be like, well,
- 43:47Speaker 4: let's go back to painting.
- 43:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I was doing this over here.
- 43:49Speaker 4: So it was very relaxed.
- 43:51Speaker 8: I think a lot of people don't have that in them,
- 43:53Speaker 8: and they need a structure, and the structure gives them
- 43:56Speaker 8: enough logged-in work.
- 43:58Speaker 5: That they start actually getting good.
- 44:00Speaker 4: I think the other reason that it was good for
- 44:02Speaker 4: me was the professors actually were artists in the field.
- 44:06Speaker 4: They weren't just teaching. My painting professor actually was only
- 44:09Speaker 4: teaching just for fun. He actually was making a living
- 44:13Speaker 4: as a painter. Like he was, uh, he would take
- 44:16Speaker 4: a sabbatical and go to Italy and do art shows
- 44:19Speaker 4: out there. So he was just teaching just for the
- 44:22Speaker 4: hell of it. And so I actually learned a lot
- 44:24Speaker 4: of painting techniques from him, which, you know, I, you know,
- 44:28Speaker 4: wanting to be a Renaissance style realism guy was, it
- 44:31Speaker 4: was great. But then upon graduating and entering the real world,
- 44:35Speaker 4: I got slapped in the face with life, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 4: whether you like it or not. Insurance payments, you know?
- 44:43Speaker 4: What the fuck is this?
- 44:44Speaker 5: I'm still not paying most of those bills.
- 44:46Speaker 4: No. So at that point, I stopped doing art, actually.
- 44:49Speaker 4: It was impossible. I had got a house, you know,
- 44:54Speaker 4: and I was trying to make bills. That's trouble, too. Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 5: I'm doing that right now.
- 44:58Speaker 4: And a job and all that. So for about six
- 45:02Speaker 4: or seven years, I stopped painting. I didn't do anything.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Did you feel the repercussions of it in your life?
- 45:10Speaker 5: creative psyche?
- 45:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so. I think I was just... I
- 45:15Speaker 4: didn't talk about it, but I think inside I was
- 45:18Speaker 4: a pretty miserable person.
- 45:19Speaker 8: Especially if you've done that before. There's some people that
- 45:23Speaker 8: just haven't done it, period. And there's still a little
- 45:26Speaker 8: weird thing that they need that and they don't know
- 45:28Speaker 8: it yet.
- 45:28Speaker 5: But it's probably got to be more... It's got to
- 45:31Speaker 5: take its toll.
- 45:32Speaker 8: On you a little more if you've actually done it
- 45:34Speaker 8: and you know that you can do it.
- 45:35Speaker 4: And you stop. It's pretty weird to to be able
- 45:40Speaker 4: to do something and not do it and then settle
- 45:44Speaker 4: for some shit-ass job that pays minimum wage.
- 45:47Speaker 5: That's what a lot of people out there are doing.
- 45:49Speaker 5: So I feel for all of them.
- 45:51Speaker 4: It's true.
- 45:51Speaker 8: You try to do what you're passionate about, but it
- 45:54Speaker 8: doesn't always pay. No.
- 45:55Speaker 5: And it certainly doesn't pay well.
- 45:57Speaker 4: The funny thing is they always say, well, follow your dreams, kids,
- 45:59Speaker 4: and it'll happen. And that's a nice phrase to say,
- 46:01Speaker 4: but sadly it's not necessarily true because you could do
- 46:03Speaker 4: everything right. You can do all the steps involved and
- 46:06Speaker 4: just fail miserably.
- 46:07Speaker 8: I think it's both I've kind of realized it's like
- 46:11Speaker 8: you've got to it is one of those follow your
- 46:13Speaker 8: dreams stay with it be passionate about it but there's
- 46:17Speaker 8: also this element of luck I shouldn't.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Say fail miserably because if you're actually trying that's great.
- 46:22Speaker 8: You can get by sometimes but I think it's one
- 46:25Speaker 8: of those you need that element of luck and when
- 46:27Speaker 8: the luck kicks in then you're also at that point
- 46:29Speaker 8: talented enough to be like oh I can actually make
- 46:31Speaker 8: this happen now whereas if it's just you're randomly picked
- 46:34Speaker 8: and you have no back you know log of work
- 46:37Speaker 8: or no skill that you've honed it's like then you just.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Walk the walk talk yeah at that point if you
- 46:43Speaker 4: don't have.
- 46:43Speaker 8: The skills yeah you might just be a one-off kind
- 46:45Speaker 8: of oh this worked out for me well oh what
- 46:47Speaker 8: do i do now and then you fall by the
- 46:49Speaker 8: wayside so yeah i think it's i think it's both
- 46:51Speaker 8: really i won't say luck isn't involved because i feel
- 46:55Speaker 8: like a lot of it is i've.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Known a few guys and girls who i mean just
- 46:59Speaker 4: were in the right place at the right time but
- 47:00Speaker 4: they also have the skills so they're able to keep
- 47:02Speaker 4: going with it and i've known a few people who
- 47:04Speaker 4: basically you know i don't I guess we're one-hit wonders,
- 47:07Speaker 4: like bands, so to speak.
- 47:08Speaker 8: It's kind of how it works. It's like you might
- 47:10Speaker 8: have something that works for a little while, but unless
- 47:12Speaker 8: you know how to parlay that into something else, it doesn't.
- 47:17Speaker 5: So, yeah, I think that is part of it.
- 47:20Speaker 8: So, as you found yourself getting back into it, was
- 47:23Speaker 8: it back to regular type of painting or.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Kind of. This was a period in my life where
- 47:32Speaker 4: things were, it was crazy in a good way.
- 47:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:35Speaker 4: So, you know, I stopped doing artwork for, like, oil
- 47:38Speaker 4: painting for years. But prior to that, prior to the
- 47:44Speaker 4: stopping of the artwork and getting my bachelor's in arts,
- 47:49Speaker 4: I was attending the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Okay.
- 47:53Speaker 4: On a weekly basis.
- 47:54Speaker 5: Leads you down a path.
- 47:55Speaker 4: It does. Yes, a very dark path that involves just lingerie.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Most definitely.
- 48:02Speaker 8: Yes.
- 48:04Speaker 4: I started going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And,
- 48:07Speaker 4: I mean, this is probably the same story that a
- 48:10Speaker 4: lot of people have. So I go to this little
- 48:11Speaker 4: theater that's in the middle of, well, actually, it's right
- 48:16Speaker 4: outside of Gary, Indiana.
- 48:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:18Speaker 5: It sounds like trouble.
- 48:19Speaker 4: I know. It sounds like trouble. And it was kind
- 48:21Speaker 4: of a shithole theater called The Crossroads. But that was
- 48:24Speaker 4: its charm. And so I go there and I meet
- 48:27Speaker 4: all these crazy people. And I actually felt more at
- 48:31Speaker 4: home with these people than anybody else I had met
- 48:34Speaker 4: in high school or even in college. And I was like, wow, this,
- 48:37Speaker 4: I enjoy this. So I started going every week. And
- 48:40Speaker 4: then eventually I joined a cast and I started performing.
- 48:43Speaker 4: And so for.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Like five years every weekend I was doing riffraff and
- 48:49Speaker 4: I was going to conventions, Rocky horror conventions across the country. And,
- 48:53Speaker 4: and so I was finally traveling and, and, uh, anyway, so,
- 48:57Speaker 4: you know, then eventually I, I, uh, I quit the
- 48:59Speaker 4: cast cause life hit. That's around the same time that
- 49:02Speaker 4: I graduated college. Life happens. I quit Rocky horror. I
- 49:05Speaker 4: quit doing paintings, but I still kept in touch with
- 49:09Speaker 4: all the people that I met. So they were still
- 49:11Speaker 4: my friends. And, uh, so six or seven years later,
- 49:16Speaker 4: I started getting back into artwork and I started doing
- 49:19Speaker 4: oil painting again, which, you know, I love the oil paintings,
- 49:22Speaker 4: but I was like, you know, I wonder if I
- 49:24Speaker 4: could make a living at this. I have no idea,
- 49:26Speaker 4: but I really should try. You only get one shot
- 49:28Speaker 4: at this life, right? I ended up meeting a guy
- 49:32Speaker 4: who was doing street art at the time, and his
- 49:35Speaker 4: name's Bearhead, and he's from Indiana, and he did this very...
- 49:38Speaker 4: Simplistic stencil work, like two colors, three colors at the most.
- 49:41Speaker 4: But it was like pop art, like Adam West and
- 49:44Speaker 4: Burt Ward. And I was like, that's awesome. And I
- 49:47Speaker 4: noticed that there was kind of like a similarity between
- 49:48Speaker 4: the stencil work and the Renaissance oil painting that I
- 49:52Speaker 4: was doing, which utilizes a skill called chiaroscuro, which is
- 49:56Speaker 4: the depiction of light and dark. That's the guy that
- 49:58Speaker 4: I mentioned, Caravaggio. That was his jam. He basically made Churroscuro,
- 50:02Speaker 4: the light and the dark.
- 50:03Speaker 5: That's an interesting connection. Yeah, I don't think I've heard.
- 50:06Speaker 4: People use that before. I mean, the thing about stencil work,
- 50:09Speaker 4: you break down the colors to the lights and darks.
- 50:11Speaker 5: It completely makes sense.
- 50:12Speaker 4: And I was like, wow, I love it. I love
- 50:13Speaker 4: the contrast. So I was like, you know what? I'm
- 50:15Speaker 4: going to take one of my paintings, and I'm going
- 50:17Speaker 4: to see if I can do that. And so I
- 50:19Speaker 4: took an oil painting, and then I broke it down
- 50:21Speaker 4: to just, I think, three colors did some stencil did
- 50:25Speaker 4: you know I cut three stencils and I tried it
- 50:27Speaker 4: out and I was like man I love this I
- 50:29Speaker 4: mean it just was like instead of spending you know
- 50:31Speaker 4: three months in an oil painting I could make you
- 50:34Speaker 4: know just within a few days I could make a
- 50:37Speaker 4: new painting and I love the look of it it
- 50:39Speaker 4: still maintained the churroscuro and so I was like I
- 50:42Speaker 4: love this so I started going down that path I
- 50:44Speaker 4: was getting away from the oil painting and then I
- 50:46Speaker 4: started doing the stencil work and then Around that same time,
- 50:50Speaker 4: I was still keeping up with all my friends from
- 50:52Speaker 4: Rocky Horror. And at that point, a lot of my
- 50:55Speaker 4: close friends from Rocky Horror started doing their own creative projects.
- 50:58Speaker 4: And then I found myself saying, hey, I can do
- 51:00Speaker 4: this for you, and they'll do this for me. We
- 51:02Speaker 4: need artwork. We need artwork, yeah.
- 51:04Speaker 5: We can do that, yeah.
- 51:05Speaker 4: So I found myself actually making work for other people.
- 51:09Speaker 4: And at that point, Comic-Cons were really starting to... to
- 51:15Speaker 4: kind of take over.
- 51:16Speaker 8: Yeah, it hit a weird period in these last 10
- 51:18Speaker 8: years because we've been doing it. I remember when we started,
- 51:21Speaker 8: it was a minimal kind of thing that we would
- 51:23Speaker 8: have to travel to get to them.
- 51:25Speaker 5: Now they have overrun every city.
- 51:27Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 51:29Speaker 4: I'm going to go off the path here and tell
- 51:32Speaker 4: a little story that I actually like about what comics
- 51:34Speaker 4: then are as opposed to now. So when I was
- 51:38Speaker 4: a kid, I read comics all the time, like horror, fantasy, sci-fi, whatever,
- 51:43Speaker 4: whatever I can get. And that was the thing. It
- 51:44Speaker 4: was whatever I could find because there were no comic
- 51:47Speaker 4: book stores. There was the local pharmacy that had the
- 51:50Speaker 4: wire racks.
- 51:51Speaker 5: You used to look at them? Yeah, that was about it, really.
- 51:53Speaker 4: The wire rack would spin around and whatever they had
- 51:56Speaker 4: that month is what I would buy. And it was just,
- 51:58Speaker 4: there was no guarantee of getting the next issue. It
- 52:01Speaker 4: was just, well, they've got this, they've got Swamp Thing,
- 52:04Speaker 4: I'll get Swamp Thing. They've got Batman, I'll get Batman.
- 52:06Speaker 4: That's how it started.
- 52:07Speaker 8: Eventually, pretty early on in our town, we did get
- 52:10Speaker 8: a good comic shop that is still around. Oh, But it,
- 52:13Speaker 8: it was again, like you're a little kid, so you
- 52:15Speaker 8: can't go there whenever you want. So it became this
- 52:17Speaker 8: like month long process of me of like dropping hints that.
- 52:20Speaker 5: Hey, I'd really like to go.
- 52:21Speaker 8: And like, I wouldn't just outright ask my parents. I'd
- 52:24Speaker 8: be like, I kept like working my way up to like.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Okay, I need to go back there. I want to
- 52:29Speaker 5: buy more stuff.
- 52:30Speaker 8: And like, so yeah, mine became a very like game
- 52:33Speaker 8: of cat and mouse of how do I get myself
- 52:35Speaker 8: to this comic book shop?
- 52:36Speaker 5: That's too far away for me to ride a bike there.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Like it's, And now it's changed. I mean, there's comic
- 52:40Speaker 4: book shops that have everything you could want. You can
- 52:43Speaker 4: order anything. Online, you can get anything. And there's a
- 52:46Speaker 4: comic convention in literally every biggish town across America. Every month,
- 52:52Speaker 4: there's a comic convention. So it's different now. I mean,
- 52:54Speaker 4: it's just you want it, it's there. And so I
- 52:59Speaker 4: started realizing, well, you know, a lot of the work
- 53:01Speaker 4: that I do, I mean, I was doing work based
- 53:03Speaker 4: on things that I like. So I was trying to
- 53:04Speaker 4: do stencil portraits of Batman, Superman, whatever. And I was like, okay,
- 53:10Speaker 4: I'm going to try to make a living at this.
- 53:12Speaker 4: I was doing some gallery work too, but the galleries,
- 53:15Speaker 4: they're fine. It's like its own art form.
- 53:19Speaker 8: Being successful in galleries is a very specific thing that
- 53:23Speaker 8: a lot of artists do not know how to do.
- 53:24Speaker 5: They may be super talented.
- 53:26Speaker 8: More so than the ones that are making money in
- 53:27Speaker 8: the galleries, but that's its own little game.
- 53:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Not to mention, you know, when you sell something
- 53:31Speaker 4: through a gallery, there's usually a 50% commission. Sometimes more
- 53:35Speaker 4: than that, I've heard of you. They pay taxes on it.
- 53:38Speaker 4: So if I would sell a painting for $ 500, I'd
- 53:42Speaker 4: be lucky if I would get $ 75 out of it.
- 53:44Speaker 4: That's crazy. So after supplies and shipping and commission fees
- 53:48Speaker 4: and all that, so. I decided, you know, I'm going
- 53:51Speaker 4: to start doing these comic conventions. And I applied for
- 53:53Speaker 4: an artist alley and got into an artist alley. I
- 53:55Speaker 4: think the first comic convention I did was C2E2 in Chicago.
- 54:00Speaker 5: It was like, I think, five.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Years ago or something. I can't remember. And so I
- 54:05Speaker 4: just set up a little booth, had some stenciled paintings,
- 54:07Speaker 4: and I did some really shitty prints that I got
- 54:10Speaker 4: made up at FedEx. And it was kind of weird
- 54:14Speaker 4: because people would look at the artwork. They would like it.
- 54:16Speaker 4: And then they'd ask how much a print is. And
- 54:18Speaker 4: I'd be like, well, $ 10?
- 54:19Speaker 5: How's that?
- 54:20Speaker 4: How about that? They would slide a $ 10 to me.
- 54:22Speaker 6: And I'm like, wow.
- 54:23Speaker 5: This works.
- 54:24Speaker 4: This is amazing. I'm actually selling stuff. And again, at
- 54:29Speaker 4: the same time, all my Rocky Horror friends were like, well, yeah.
- 54:32Speaker 4: I mean, all those people that I had met had
- 54:34Speaker 4: kind of moved out. My one friend, Sean Stuller, who
- 54:39Speaker 4: ran the cast that I was in for years in Indiana,
- 54:41Speaker 4: he moved out to the East Coast. He was living
- 54:42Speaker 4: in Jersey. And then there's the New York Comic Con
- 54:45Speaker 4: out there. So I was like, you know what? Maybe
- 54:47Speaker 4: I can try to get into that. And Sean's like,
- 54:49Speaker 4: if you do, we'll find you a place to stay.
- 54:52Speaker 4: You don't have to worry about a hotel. And that's
- 54:54Speaker 4: the other thing. You know, hotels are expensive.
- 54:55Speaker 5: It becomes, yeah, a huge part of this game, hitting conventions.
- 54:58Speaker 4: So I would end up going out to the East Coast,
- 55:01Speaker 4: staying with my buddy Sean. And then next thing I know, hey,
- 55:06Speaker 4: I'm in the artist alley of New York Comic Con,
- 55:08Speaker 4: which is a little bit bigger.
- 55:09Speaker 5: It's a big step, yeah.
- 55:10Speaker 4: There's more people and stuff. And selling prints. And I
- 55:12Speaker 4: was like, oh, so I would take all that money
- 55:14Speaker 4: and then invest it into another convention a month later.
- 55:16Speaker 4: And this ball got rolling that just took over. And
- 55:20Speaker 4: now I don't know what day it is or month.
- 55:23Speaker 4: That's the convention routine. Or what town. Where am I?
- 55:27Speaker 4: I don't know. Do I pack up yet? Yes.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Let me know when it's time to pack up.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Well, so much of yours is not only amazing, but
- 55:36Speaker 5: so much.
- 55:36Speaker 8: Was movie-based, so very heavily influenced by films.
- 55:40Speaker 5: I guess you've always been kind of a movie fan.
- 55:43Speaker 4: I love movies. I like them. As early as Star Wars.
- 55:45Speaker 4: As early as Star Wars, yeah. But, yeah, I guess.
- 55:48Speaker 8: Coming up, what were some of the ones outside of
- 55:50Speaker 8: Star Wars and Rocky, some of the other outside influences?
- 55:54Speaker 4: There's a lot of TV influences as well. I mean,
- 55:57Speaker 4: I loved... I mean, even just like Lost in Space.
- 56:00Speaker 4: I used to love watching Lost in Space, the original
- 56:03Speaker 4: Star Trek. Do I have to clarify original as saying
- 56:08Speaker 4: Captain Kirk? Because there's been so many Star Treks. Like
- 56:10Speaker 4: some kids, I don't even know.
- 56:12Speaker 5: I guess now you do. I wouldn't even think that,
- 56:14Speaker 5: but I'm like, yeah, obviously.
- 56:16Speaker 4: But again, I'm in the same time period. Adam West, Batman.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Loved it. Watched it all the time. I actually had,
- 56:23Speaker 4: I think, a pretty awesome upbringing. My mother was basically
- 56:26Speaker 4: just like an old, hippie it's just anything goes at
- 56:30Speaker 4: the home she would basically let me watch whatever i
- 56:32Speaker 4: want i remember at one point we got hbo and
- 56:35Speaker 4: and so at that point there were movies that i
- 56:38Speaker 4: didn't see in the theater that were on hbo like
- 56:40Speaker 4: like alien.
- 56:42Speaker 8: I saw that as a kid yeah i don't remember
- 56:44Speaker 8: them even questioning it i sometimes i wonder now i'm
- 56:47Speaker 8: like if i would have turned out the way i
- 56:49Speaker 8: am now i i appreciate it because i love the
- 56:52Speaker 8: movie so much that i saw as a kid but
- 56:54Speaker 8: i'm like if i had a kid now like I
- 56:56Speaker 8: wouldn't want to watch an alien when I was as
- 56:57Speaker 8: young as I was.
- 56:58Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I saw it on HBO, and I mean,
- 57:02Speaker 4: that's like a sci-fi movie, which is very influential, but
- 57:04Speaker 4: my mother was like, well, it's kind of scary. Yeah,
- 57:07Speaker 4: it's horror. You want to watch it? Go ahead, but
- 57:09Speaker 4: you're not going to sleep in my room tonight. I
- 57:11Speaker 4: was like, all right. I watch Alien, and sure enough,
- 57:14Speaker 4: I'm deathly afraid that something is going to pop out
- 57:17Speaker 4: of my chest.
- 57:18Speaker 5: Still, jury's out.
- 57:20Speaker 4: It might happen. It might happen.
- 57:21Speaker 5: It might have been laid a long time ago.
- 57:24Speaker 4: And then, you know, That's the sci-fi aspect. The other
- 57:26Speaker 4: aspect that is very influential is the horror aspect. And
- 57:30Speaker 4: another film that I saw on HBO that I advertised
- 57:34Speaker 4: for was The Exorcist. And I was like, oh, wow,
- 57:36Speaker 4: that looks fun. And my mom, she's like, do you
- 57:40Speaker 4: want to watch it? And I'm like, yeah. She's like, okay, good.
- 57:43Speaker 4: You're not sleeping in my bedroom. So she let me
- 57:46Speaker 4: watch it when I was in kindergarten.
- 57:49Speaker 6: I think.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Literally. Oh, Jesus.
- 57:51Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 57:52Speaker 5: The power of Christ compels you.
- 57:54Speaker 4: Yeah, so I basically watched the, you know, HBO unedited
- 57:57Speaker 4: version of The Exorcist. And, of course, it terrified me. But,
- 58:02Speaker 4: you know, it was influential horror, sci-fi. I mean, all
- 58:07Speaker 4: of it. Comics, movies, TV. Oh, even old Japanese kaiju movies. Godzilla.
- 58:14Speaker 4: I absolutely loved.
- 58:16Speaker 8: Again, here we had a, like, Sunday afternoon thing that, like,
- 58:20Speaker 8: the local channel would just play tons of Godzilla and
- 58:23Speaker 8: other random offshoot, your Gamera's and your War of the Gargantuas,
- 58:28Speaker 8: and I.
- 58:29Speaker 5: Just love those as a kid.
- 58:30Speaker 4: Kids nowadays realize what it was like to see stuff
- 58:33Speaker 4: like that because, you know.
- 58:34Speaker 5: Because you couldn't just go find it.
- 58:36Speaker 7: No.
- 58:36Speaker 5: It had to find you almost.
- 58:38Speaker 4: We had the... I forget. We had the TV that
- 58:41Speaker 4: had the two knobs. There was VHS... Not VHS. VHF
- 58:46Speaker 4: and UHF. So the Godzilla and the Gamera, all those movies...
- 58:52Speaker 4: Is it UHF?
- 58:53Speaker 5: I think UHF was the lower rant one.
- 58:55Speaker 4: Yeah, the one where you'd actually have to turn and
- 58:56Speaker 4: try to find it. It was your local channels usually.
- 58:58Speaker 4: It was like trying to dial in a radio station,
- 59:00Speaker 4: and it was always like channel 50 or 60 on
- 59:02Speaker 4: Sunday afternoons. They'd be playing black and white.
- 59:06Speaker 5: Clicking of the giant knob.
- 59:07Speaker 4: So, you know. all of that. The Japanese, you know,
- 59:12Speaker 4: giant monster movies. Any shitty black and white B-horror movie
- 59:17Speaker 4: that I could find on Sundays.
- 59:19Speaker 5: I still love them.
- 59:20Speaker 8: Like, again, I was watching some over Halloween now, and
- 59:23Speaker 8: I'm like, there's something about that.
- 59:25Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 59:26Speaker 8: Just the feeling that you get from those old black
- 59:28Speaker 8: and white, even a few of the early color ones
- 59:31Speaker 8: still kind of had that vibe. It's very much kind
- 59:34Speaker 8: of rooted in that, and I just attached myself to
- 59:36Speaker 8: that so much as a kid, and obviously it hasn't
- 59:38Speaker 8: gone away.
- 59:40Speaker 4: And also, I lived in a very rural area. I
- 59:43Speaker 4: lived on a farm, like out in the middle of nowhere,
- 59:45Speaker 4: so there were no... There were no other kids, really.
- 59:48Speaker 4: I mean, in school, there were kids. But again, I
- 59:50Speaker 4: was drawing barbarians cutting off gargoyle heads. So I wasn't
- 59:53Speaker 4: really hanging out. Like, we're going to leave him alone.
- 59:54Speaker 7: Yep.
- 59:55Speaker 4: And so on the farm, I had just free reign
- 59:57Speaker 4: to do whatever I wanted. And so I would draw
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: whatever I wanted. I would play with all my Star
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Wars toys in the sandbox. I just had free reign
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: of everything. So we had train cars on the farm, too,
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: that were used for storage. So I remember I would
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: climb these train cars and pretend I was Indiana Jones
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: and I did a lot of that, too. Nowadays, parents
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: probably wouldn't allow it, but I would climb up to
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: the top of the train car and hang off the
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: edge as if it was moving. I mean, here I'm
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: 10 years old hanging off a train car. I could
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: have fallen and broke my neck, but my grandparents and
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: mom were like, whatever. He already watched The Exorcist. He's
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: good to go.
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: Yeah, the generation. I was just discussing this. And funny
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: enough with my mom, because I was questioning how many
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: things I used to.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: Do that I'm like, you would never let a kid
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: do that now.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: Like the world we live in.
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: And then she was talking about the stuff that like
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: she did as a kid. And I'm like, they really
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: did not give a rat's ass when she was a kid.
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: So I'm like, it's progressively gotten, you know, more and
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: more crazy overprotective helicopter parenting. But, To some reason, I'm like, well, yeah,
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: I would probably be that bad myself now.
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: But I'm like, there's a mid-range.
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: I'm like, there's kind of, because I feel like now
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: we're kind of overdoing it. So maybe that era we
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: were in is just enough of, you know, fall down
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: and hurt yourself.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: It's okay. You learn something, you know.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: And I think all of it actually helped as far
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: as the imagination and creative process goes. All of that.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: And I try to tie all of it into my work.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: So obviously, if you're going to paint something, Actually, I
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: say if you're going to paint or create or do something,
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: I always think you should do something you either really
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: love or really hate because either one involves passion.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: There's passion there either way, yeah.
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: And so I love comics, sci-fi, horror, and I'll try
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: to incorporate that into the work, which is nice because
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: we're at a period in life where Comic-Cons are huge
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: and people are, even in movies now, I never thought
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: 20 years ago that I would ever see you know,
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: an Avengers movie, Captain America.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: Massive, big budget, overarching, multiple, multiple, multiple movies. It's backed
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: by a studio.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: It's crazy. There was a... there was a little bit
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: of that in the seventies on TV. There was a
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: Spider-Man television show, which was not very good.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: But it was all, cause they kept trying to do
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: all of them. There was a bad Captain.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: America on TV. There was a very bad Captain America. Yeah.
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: The Spider-Man was just giant rope webs. They were flinging
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: at people.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: I watched all those too.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: Wonder Woman was a good one.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: The Incredible Hulk was good.
- 1:02:23Speaker 8: Incredible Hulk had a good budget for, for TV, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 8: it had better than the, the bad made for TV
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: movies of all.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: So, and nowadays it's like, man, uh, You know, when
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I first heard that there was going to be a
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I was like, where the
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: fuck am I?
- 1:02:39Speaker 8: I was just like, how can you make that work?
- 1:02:42Speaker 8: And then I saw that first trailer, and I'm like, damn,
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: they might have done it. And then sitting there, I'm like,
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: how did they make this happen?
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Never in a million years. I mean, of course, my
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: favorite combo character of all time, and sadly they've already
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: made a movie of him, and it's okay, is Swamp Thing.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: That was my favorite comic, hands down, was Swamp Thing.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: It was a horror comic, honestly, and I don't think
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: a lot of people realized that back then. I remember
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: when Alan Moore took over for the run of Swamp Thing,
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: they used to have a tagline at the top of
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: the comic which said, for mature readers only. And as
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: a kid, I was like, oh, well, I'm buying this.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: And then the artwork, it was just terrifying. And then,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: you know, Wes Craven did the Swamp Thing movie in
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: the early 80s, and I remember seeing it, and I
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: was like, wow, this is nothing like the comic.
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: Yeah. And again, you feel like they kind of got it,
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: but at the same time, it's like trying to force
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: it into a mold of something that it wasn't. It's
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: still trying to make him such a superhero kind of... Yeah,
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: it doesn't quite hit the same.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: If they make a Swamp Thing movie nowadays, I'm probably
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: going to lose my mind because... I mean, I would
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: be super excited because they have the technology that they
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: could conceivably make a Swamp Thing movie and make it
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: look like the comic, but I don't think they could
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: ever actually do it justice because it's actually a horror comic,
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: and they can't really make a horror-based movie based on
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: a comic. They want to make it a superhero movie.
- 1:04:15Speaker 8: Yeah, that's that big of a budget, and it's going
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: to want to hit the audience that it does because
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: if you make him a hero, then you'll hit that audience.
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: If you make him.
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: a horrific character it's like you're going to get horror
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: fans but you're not going to get massive.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: Audiences so it'll never happen yeah but I mean you
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: know so all of that I throw it into the
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: work so a lot of the work I do is
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: some of it's sci-fi and some of it is comic
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: related and some of it's horror related so and you
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: know it works really well at the comic conventions.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: It all turns out really impressive, I have to say.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: I appreciate that.
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: You've honed it well.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: I spend many hours in the basement.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: My question is.
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: In your early days of super hardcore learning Renaissance painting,
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: if someone went through a time warp and showed you
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: one of yours, how would you respond to it? Do
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: you think that version of you would ever see yourself
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: being where you are now, doing the work that.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: You are now?
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: I think so, honestly.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: I mean, they, you know, we talk about like the
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: Renaissance masters back in the day. But truthfully, I think
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: using the term master is just, it's an illusion because
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: nobody ever masters the craft.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: And they weren't masters then.
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: No.
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: It's only us now referring to them. It was just
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: working artists at the time.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: There is, I mean, if you're out there making artwork,
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: there is always a stepping stone. There is always something
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: to work towards, too.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: It's always an ongoing process. And so, I mean, the
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: old oil painting me, looking at me now, I think
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: would be like, okay, that's fine. I know I'm going there,
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: and that's totally cool.
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: You found it. This is the thing I've been slowly
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: working towards.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: You just got there. And the funny thing is, being
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: that I've been doing a lot of stencil work, as
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: far as the stencil designs themselves, I think one of
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: the things that people enjoy about the work when I
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: do my paintings is, I mean, I'm trying to make stencils,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: stencil work that incorporates the idea of chiaroscuro, of light
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: and dark, of using not just like two colors, but
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: I'll use like five colors, seven colors.
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: What little stencil work I've done in the past, it's like,
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: it's really hard to make it work right. So the
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: more layers you're on, the level of difficulty multiplies.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: Again, that's why I live in the basement. I don't
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: have a social life.
- 1:06:34Speaker 8: I think that's why I was so impressed with yours,
- 1:06:36Speaker 8: because there are so many layers and so many intricate
- 1:06:38Speaker 8: little designs.
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: That's a hell of a lot of work, man.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: The big Lebowski painting that I did, that was probably
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: the hardest one that I've done. Because before I'll ever
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: cut a stencil, I'll actually draw up the design first.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Because I've got to figure out how many layers I'm
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: going to have and how they're going to lay on top.
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: Darks and lights are going to be, yeah.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: So it actually took, I think it took a couple
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: months to do, just to do the drawing for the
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: big Lebowski because of his hair. You know, he's got
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: such wonderful Jesus hair.
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: The dude's mane.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Yeah, but trying to figure out how I'm going to
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: make a stencil of the hair with the highlights and
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: the darks. So it took about two months to actually
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: draw it, to get it exactly how I wanted. And
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: then it took a month just to cut the stencils.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: because they were so intricate. And then it took about
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: a week to paint it, because the stencils were so fragile. Basically,
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: I would lay a stencil down. And I've seen a
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: lot of guys that they lay a stencil down, and
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: they just hit it with as much paint as possible.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: And I can't do that. So I would lay the
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: stencil down. I would do a light mist of spray.
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: And then I'd fan it and let it dry. And
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: then I'd have to do that again. On the same stencil.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: That's crazy. So I think I had seven stencils for
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: the Big Lebowski. But each stencil actually had two colors. So, like,
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: the top of the stencil had, like, one color and
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: the bottom had another color. So that way I could
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: double up.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: Creation is amazing, too, if you can get that right.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: And so, I mean, yeah, it took a couple weeks.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: Did I say a week? I've lost track at this point.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: A long time. It took a long time, honestly. It
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: was insane. But, you know.
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: The other thing that I want to do with it is,
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: aside from the colors and the churroscuro, is the border work.
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: I like to try to incorporate these really ornate borders.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: And the reason is, it's kind of like an homage
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: or a callback to the old iconography of the day.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: You see these saints.
- 1:08:27Speaker 8: Again, I think maybe that's part of what appealed to
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: me so much. Because I have such a thing for,
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: especially the Mexican influence, the Day of the Dead stuff.
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: All the weird saint stuff.
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: Imagery.
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: Again, maybe all of these things came together that I
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: so responded to your stuff.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: There's a little bit of art theory that goes into this,
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: or meaning, I should say, because nowadays people, Comic-Cons are
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: so insane, and they're so everywhere, and people love these
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: characters so much that in a way they are.
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: I mean, it is sort of. I mean, people say
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: it's sacrilege.
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: But, I mean, we treat these characters equally as reverent.
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: I mean, you watch fanboys get worked up when a
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: movie does it wrong.
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: Because it's their faith. It's like that is the way
- 1:09:10Speaker 8: they treat it to some extent. So, yeah, it's not
- 1:09:13Speaker 8: far removed.
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: I like to depict these characters as the gods that
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: they are.
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: Well, again, it's all really impressive. I guess, where's the
- 1:09:28Speaker 8: best place for people to see some.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: Of your work?
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: People always ask, do I have a website? And I'm like, no,
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: I'm too lazy to make one, honestly.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: There's ways you don't really have to.
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: The nice thing is, I learned very early on as
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: far as artwork goes, and it sounds so weird to
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: say this, marketing plays a key role in trying to
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: be successful. The internet is great because you can reach
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: an audience you could never reach before, but you're also
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: competing now with millions and millions of people. Early on,
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: I love robots and sci-fi, so I adopted the name
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: Epion5 as my artist name. which works out great because
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: I'm the only guy named Epion5. So when people ask,
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: what's your website? I'm like, just Google Epion5. That's it. Yeah,
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: because nobody actually types in web address. They just Google it. Yeah,
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: pretty much. And when they do that, it brings up Facebook,
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: the Epion5 Facebook page, the Epion5 Instagram, Epion5 Etsy, Tumblr, Twitter,
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: although I'm probably going to shut down the Etsy site
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: pretty soon.
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: I do so many Comic-Cons. I do like two, three
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: a month.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: It's got to be hard to keep.
- 1:10:34Speaker 8: stock and keep track of stock while doing all of
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: these shows i'm terrible at etsy and for anybody who
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: listens to this if you place an order i'm sorry
- 1:10:43Speaker 8: i didn't send it.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: Out to you yet i am so sorry i'm sorry
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: yeah but i just tell people google epion5 epion5 and
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: they'll find me that's cool it's easy.
- 1:10:53Speaker 8: And you definitely should and then again you're touring the
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: country more than you need to So come, come find you.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: Yeah. I'll be in your town next week. We will. Yeah.
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: We'll, we'll definitely help spread the word and whatever links
- 1:11:09Speaker 8: you want to put up there too.
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: We can, we can do that. Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: Thank you for joining us on this and we'll, we'll
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: go check back in with Mr.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: Kids, get out your decoder pins.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: For you members of the secret circle.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: As a, you know, heads up for you kids at home.
- 1:11:27Speaker 8: Uh, we're, Probably going to return to that Rocky Horror
- 1:11:30Speaker 8: thing we were talking about.
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: So do your homework now.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Go watch the movie. Sweet.
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: All right, Misty. I think it's time for some geek activities.
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: Do you have activities? I'm a geek. I don't do activities.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: That's the point.
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: You sat at home watching stuff. What have you watched, Misty?
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: Guess what I have not watched?
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Movies.
- 1:12:06Speaker 6: Pop gear. I've been trying to get caught up on
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: Supernatural because I'm like a season and a half behind.
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: That's pretty geeky.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: I love me some Supernatural. I'm a Dean girl all
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: the way. I am no lie.
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Cold sores and all.
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: Fucking A. God, she's stretching again. Focus. I can't get
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: my camera to focus.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: But anyways, I got caught up on iZombie. I fucking
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: love that show.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: iZombie's so awesome. Man, we did see an iZombie today.
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: Threw me off. I'm like, why is this bitch carrying
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: around hot sauce?
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: Oh.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: The white hair, the hot sauce. It all came to you.
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: The lab coat. She was wearing a lab coat, too.
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: That was pretty awesome, though.
- 1:12:48Speaker 8: Just for sheer, you know, awesome character choice alone, she
- 1:12:53Speaker 8: gets points.
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: I didn't get a good close look at her because
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: I was like... I know.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: We should have been up there like, can we take
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: a picture with you?
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: I know, right?
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: Because we'd be cool.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: We would be.
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: But aside from that, iZombie, awesome.
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: I do.
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: I love that show. I got caught up on Scream Queens.
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: because I was so excited about it. Now that it's
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: been on, I'm like, I'm not really sure what to
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: do with this.
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: They're trying for something.
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: They're definitely trying.
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: I'm not 100% sure. I just don't know how it's
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: going to hit.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: I get.
- 1:13:26Speaker 8: I feel like what he's doing is working for the
- 1:13:30Speaker 8: show runner, creator, whatever that dude's name is.
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: I feel like he's following... Ryan.
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: His name's Ryan.
- 1:13:36Speaker 8: He's following through with his plan, and I feel like
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: he's making it work exactly the way he wants to.
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: I'm like, is it really landing with anyone else?
- 1:13:44Speaker 8: I feel like it's too much horror for most normal people.
- 1:13:48Speaker 8: It's probably not enough for hardcore horror fans, and it's
- 1:13:51Speaker 8: kind of silly, so there's also... The comedic angle, which again,
- 1:13:55Speaker 8: sometimes you can work comedy and horror.
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: And the raw bitchiness of Emma Roberts. God, that bitch
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: is crazy.
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: I do like Emma Roberts.
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: I don't even think she's just crazy. I think she's
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: fucking crazy.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: In real life.
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: Well, you've seen her dad, right?
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: Her dad's hot. I'm not even going to lie. Eric Roberts.
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: But he's a nut job.
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: I'm not saying I don't like him, but he's a
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: little bit crazy.
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: Not that I'm like for spousal abuse, but I'm pretty
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: sure she beats her boyfriend. I've heard stories.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: Is this Emma or the character?
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: Emma, like in real life.
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: Allegedly. Allegedly.
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: Let's just say I'm like Evan... Is it Peter Evans
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: or Evan Peters? That other guy who was Quicksilver in.
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: The other Quicksilver.
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: The X-Men movie that I watched. I watched all the
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: X-Men movies. He was not Quicksilver in the... Age of Ultron. Yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: I did not watch that one. Because it didn't have Loki,
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: so fuck that movie.
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: It was supposed to have Loki.
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: And then he got cut. Fuck that.
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: But I kind of agree, because I watched that.
- 1:14:49Speaker 8: And knowing the scene, because there was all this other
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: extra stuff they shot for that scene.
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: That did.
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: Make it kind of confusing. And then also adding Loki.
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: And that's kind of why they took it out. If
- 1:14:59Speaker 8: you read through like what they said. It's because it
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: makes it seem like. Maybe Loki's behind it all.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: And like.
- 1:15:05Speaker 8: So Ultron's not the bad guy. It's Loki controlling of Ultron.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: So I mean.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: People are dumb. You don't want to confuse them.
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: So I actually kind of agree with that decision. To
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: make it a more simplified streamlined plot. Because they really
- 1:15:18Speaker 8: did have a huge amount of information. To cram into
- 1:15:20Speaker 8: like a two hour plus movie.
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: So.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: I think it does make it less confusing taking that
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: scene out.
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: Anyway, point was, bitch is crazy.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: She is crazy.
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: And so it makes her character on the show, I'm like,
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: she's not even just acting. Bitch is probably just fucking crazy.
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: This is just film video footage of her.
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: I mean, she's just, she's nuts. And I like it
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: for the show. I'm not sure I would want to
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: hang out with her in real life, although she is
- 1:15:44Speaker 6: pretty hot.
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: I mean, that was kind of my take on Scream 4, too.
- 1:15:48Speaker 8: I'm just like, oh, this is it. She can dial
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: it up to 11. By the end of that movie,
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: I'm just like, all right, I'm on Team Emma here.
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: I was like, damn it.
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: And that's what I, a million years ago, when I
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: did the whole episode about it, that was my takeaway.
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: I was like, they ended it the most boring, conventional way.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: No offense, Wes.
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: Rest in peace.
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: But I'm just like, you so should have handed off
- 1:16:10Speaker 8: that franchise to Emma Roberts.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: No shit.
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: Like, she should have taken over. She should have been
- 1:16:14Speaker 8: the through line and done 4, 5, and 6 and
- 1:16:16Speaker 8: had nothing but Emma Roberts in it because she's awesome
- 1:16:19Speaker 8: and crazy town.
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: I mean, she had just... There's a scene on Office
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: of Life episode I watched where they're at the funeral
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: for Chanel No. 2, which is equally fucking... What's her name?
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: Ponytail bitch. Ariana Grande.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:40Speaker 6: Anyways, and she's calling her a whore. I'm like, she's
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: right there in her casket. And Emma Roberts is giving
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: a fucking eulogy. And she's like, you dead whore. You
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: fucking get what you deserve. I don't know if she
- 1:16:49Speaker 6: didn't actually say fuck because it's actually on like Fox
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: or something.
- 1:16:51Speaker 8: It is, yeah.
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Semi-network television.
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: But she was calling her a whore and dead whore.
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: And you got up, you're rotten in hell or something.
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: It's good times.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: She's a fun person.
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: She is. She's nutty. Shenanigans.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: All right. So on my end, not near as much TV.
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: I did try to keep up with the few like iZombie.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: But movie wise, Final Girl.
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: I want to see that so bad.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: Singular.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: The one with Abigail Breslin?
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: Who is also on Scream Queens.
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: Well, that's my takeaway is I didn't know that I
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: would say this sentence, but Abigail Breslin is a badass.
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: Watching that, I'm just like, damn, all right.
- 1:17:35Speaker 8: I didn't expect that, you know, years ago when she
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: was just that kid that kept turning up in all
- 1:17:39Speaker 8: these movies.
- 1:17:40Speaker 6: Now she's... Little Miss Sunshine.
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: She's Little Miss Sunshine upside her head. Like, she's a badass.
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: I know, right? I sent you the trailer for that,
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: didn't I?
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: Yeah. But I still couldn't remember which was which.
- 1:17:49Speaker 8: Like, when I got that one, I still, like, Didn't
- 1:17:52Speaker 8: remember which plot was between.
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: There's Final Girls. There's Final Girls.
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: So I just saw it and went, all right, I
- 1:17:57Speaker 8: need to read this. And then like I watched it
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: and I was still, I was like midway in and went,
- 1:18:01Speaker 8: oh yeah, it is this.
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: Like I forgot which plot was which movie.
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: Yeah, it's very confusing that they're both out around the
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: exact same time with this.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: Almost the exact same title.
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: And I want to see them both. I want to
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: see the Final Girls too.
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: The other one sounds cool too.
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: This one, we could do a whole episode on just
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: this because I kind of need to talk through it, so.
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: I'm just giving a light overview so as to no spoilers.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: Next time in the Bastion of Awesomeness, we'll be covering... Actually,
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: we'll probably do it without us.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: We need to talk about it.
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: You'll probably get some of your more educated people from
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: the podcast.
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: You ain't educated.
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: I'm just the one who says fuck a lot.
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: That part's true.
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: Here's what I will give it.
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: It looks amazing.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: And, like, that director has not directed a feature film before.
- 1:18:49Speaker 10: What?
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: He's a photographer. So every shot is lit perfect. Every
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: shot is framed perfect. Like, it looks amazing.
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: Yeah, the trailer looked pretty fucking amazing.
- 1:19:00Speaker 8: So, yeah, I mean, just visually you should watch it. But, yeah, story-wise, like,
- 1:19:04Speaker 8: I want to sit down and talk. Because I feel
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: like the basics of what's going on within scene-to-scene is.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: is, is great.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: And it all pans out and you get the story
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: comes together and.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: I get it.
- 1:19:14Speaker 8: There's a couple of overarching things and I'm like, but,
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: but wait, so what, what, what about this? And I
- 1:19:21Speaker 8: feel like you're kind of left on your own. And
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: only if they come through with like a sequel, which
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: I don't think is that far fetched really. If, if
- 1:19:30Speaker 8: they finish out that thought that I'm thinking one of
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: these overarching plots is it would make sense if they
- 1:19:34Speaker 8: came back later and did a sequel. So if they
- 1:19:37Speaker 8: do and they like follow through on some of these
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: grand plot lines, it would be.
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: Way more interesting.
- 1:19:44Speaker 8: As it stands, I'm like, I don't know what to
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: do with the overall story. But like the basic story
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: going on in front of your face is awesome. Like
- 1:19:52Speaker 8: it still like works and it's cool. And like it's
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: still I mean, Abigail Breslin is badass in it. Not
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: just the fight choreography, but again, she's just a solid
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: actress now. And Wes Bentley does his normal creepy weird
- 1:20:06Speaker 8: dude Wes Bentley thing.
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: Did he talk about plastic bags at any point?
- 1:20:10Speaker 8: No, but he also didn't have creepy facial hair going on.
- 1:20:14Speaker 8: He's cleaned up a few of the past.
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: Mistakes that he's made in his acting career.
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: So again, he's just a weird creepy dude that's piecing
- 1:20:24Speaker 8: all this together.
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: I don't know. It's fun. I'm glad I watched it.
- 1:20:29Speaker 6: Do you think I will like this movie?
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: You'll probably have the same questions I have. That's why
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: I want to discuss them, but I don't know that
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: we're going to come out with anything. I think it'll
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: just be us saying the same thing.
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: Like, what about? And it'll be a lot of that.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: Good times.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: But definitely worth watching.
- 1:20:44Speaker 8: It's a very interesting idea and amazingly well photographed.
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: Awesome sauce.
- 1:20:50Speaker 8: So the other one, now this falls into a category
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: that you don't normally like, but this, I don't know.
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: It's a documentary. This is almost the exception, though, because
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: this story is crazy down.
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: And I'm not ruining it because it all really happened,
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: so spoilers for real life.
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: But the other one.
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: Is called Lost Soul, colon, The Doomed Journey of Richard
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: What?
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Have you seen.
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: The, what was.
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: It, 90s era Island of Dr.
- 1:21:21Speaker 9: Moreau?
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: No version whatsoever.
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: That has your boy Iceman in it. Can you do
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: it again? Let's get in on mic.
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: Did you get it? I can't do it very loud.
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: My teeth have problems.
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: You're probably not supposed to do that, much like Val Kilmer,
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: which is why.
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: I have this phobia with teeth, and I'm afraid that
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: if I clack them too hard, they will all shatter.
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: And it made him. that phobia well see he wasn't
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: back in.
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: Mid 90s well now he is that's what it comes
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: down to so basically this is a like it's not
- 1:21:52Speaker 8: amazingly shot it's not because that's usually my criteria for
- 1:21:56Speaker 8: documentaries is like if it's just a standard.
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: Run of the mill you know my criteria for documentaries
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: are don't watch them and to not be documentaries.
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: But that's the thing like a lot of people like
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: oh I saw this on Netflix I saw this and
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: like I watch a lot of them and they're just
- 1:22:08Speaker 8: kind of I may be interested in the story but
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: I still take points away if it's not like conceived
- 1:22:15Speaker 8: in a different way, shot in an interesting way, edited
- 1:22:18Speaker 8: in an interesting way. Like if you don't make it
- 1:22:20Speaker 8: something above and beyond the normal thing that you're going
- 1:22:23Speaker 8: to see on the history channel or some random, like
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: hour long TV documentary, like I, I can't give it
- 1:22:29Speaker 8: an amazing review because I'm like, the story itself might
- 1:22:32Speaker 8: be interesting.
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: The filmmaking part of it falls through.
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: This one doesn't really do anything amazing on the filmmaking end.
- 1:22:39Speaker 8: It's talking heads. It's standard stuff put together from after
- 1:22:43Speaker 8: the fact. But the story is so freaking ridiculous and crazy.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: Richard Stanley is the guy that did Hardware, which we
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: watched on the show. Was I there for that?
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: No, I don't think it was.
- 1:22:57Speaker 8: You were there for the first half, because we talk
- 1:22:58Speaker 8: about Black Santa's Revenge. Because only on this show would
- 1:23:02Speaker 8: we do hardware as a Christmas movie.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: Which it is, mind you.
- 1:23:06Speaker 8: But yeah, for one of our Christmas specials, we did hardware.
- 1:23:10Speaker 8: And he followed it up with Dust Devil, which I
- 1:23:13Speaker 8: also saw. That was back in the Joe Bob days,
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: so I remember watching it when he sent it over.
- 1:23:18Speaker 8: So yeah, those were still kind of indie movies and
- 1:23:21Speaker 8: kind of genre favorites. So at that point, he gets
- 1:23:25Speaker 8: enough attention from a studio that they're like, OK, we're
- 1:23:28Speaker 8: making this new adaptation.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: Of Island of Dr.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: Moreau. There's been, you know, the Island of Lost Souls
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: and like Universal Days.
- 1:23:35Speaker 8: And then there's the 70s one with Michael York. And
- 1:23:38Speaker 8: it's so I mean, they've done a few versions before.
- 1:23:40Speaker 8: But again, he was like he loved that book as
- 1:23:42Speaker 8: a kid. And like he's like, no, I want to make,
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: you know, a real version of it. He was not
- 1:23:46Speaker 8: really thrilled with the 70s one like most people were.
- 1:23:48Speaker 8: So wants to make this version. The studios are on board.
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: Somehow the word gets to Marlon Brando to be Dr.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: Moreau. So at that point, it like bumps it up.
- 1:24:01Speaker 5: It was going to be like a pretty low budget,
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: you know, kind of sci-fi thing on an island. So
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: no big deal. Well, then by the time Brando is involved,
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: it's like, okay, well now we're going to have to.
- 1:24:11Speaker 6: That's when the nutty party starts.
- 1:24:12Speaker 8: We're going to have to, you know, take it up
- 1:24:13Speaker 8: a notch. So then word gets to, like, Val Kilmer.
- 1:24:16Speaker 8: And so Val Kilmer.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: Is at, like, 90s level. Like, that mid-90s, he's still at, like,
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: the peak. Like, he's coming off of Batman.
- 1:24:23Speaker 8: Like, at that point, he's right at the peak of
- 1:24:25Speaker 8: his popularity and kind of his power in Hollywood. And
- 1:24:29Speaker 8: you see this is what happens because that's where the
- 1:24:32Speaker 8: thing comes together and you get this weird power play of, like,
- 1:24:36Speaker 8: How big of a dick can Val Kilmer be? By
- 1:24:38Speaker 8: the way, if you listen to these guys, the guys
- 1:24:40Speaker 8: on the set have all these stories about him.
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: They're like, what the hell?
- 1:24:44Speaker 8: He's just being a dick for the sake of being
- 1:24:46Speaker 8: a dick. So watching him be a dick, Brando starts
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: just trying to sabotage it.
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: Whether he was meaning to or not, he's an insane person.
- 1:24:56Speaker 8: He has himself in whiteface for no reason, just pancake
- 1:25:00Speaker 8: batter all over his head.
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: He's like it? He starts wearing the bucket on his head.
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:25:07Speaker 8: But then there's the little dude. What has now become
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: a running joke in everything. The little guy on South
- 1:25:12Speaker 8: Park that hangs around with that guy that dresses like him.
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: That's basically a monkey on South Park. That is stolen
- 1:25:18Speaker 8: from there. Mini-Me is pretty much just making fun of
- 1:25:21Speaker 8: the Brando role in this movie. And it was a
- 1:25:23Speaker 8: real thing. They found they were trying to come up
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: with all these weird different actors. And like, you know,
- 1:25:28Speaker 8: this guy's missing a limb. He'll be weird to put
- 1:25:30Speaker 8: in the middle of this. Well, then they find, like, this,
- 1:25:32Speaker 8: I think he's Spanish or something, and he's, like, tiny.
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: He's, like, 18 inches.
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: I don't know what he had.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: You just like to say that word.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: Progeria.
- 1:25:40Speaker 8: He's, like, 18 inches tall. Like, he's, like, it's ridiculous.
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: Like, it's amazing.
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: You gotta say it like a Godzilla. Progeria!
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: It's like, it's amazing that he's alive and as tiny.
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: As he is.
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: And if you have progeria, I'm sorry, I'm not mocking
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: you or your disease.
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: She just likes saying the word. It's the same reason
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: I say spina bifida all the time.
- 1:26:01Speaker 6: Or a Juliana Magaliz.
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: We're just entertained by fun words.
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: Juliana Magaliz.
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: We're special at four years old.
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: My boyfriend gets so mad at me because whenever there's
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: commercials for The Good White Fawn, they're going to go, boyfriend, boyfriend,
- 1:26:14Speaker 6: who is that? He's like, girlfriend, don't. I'm like, it's
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: Julianna Magaliz.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: Magaliz.
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: So I'm not, like, making fun of the disease.
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: We're making fun of how special we are.
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: Horrible diseases should not have fun names.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: That is kind of an oversight on their part for
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: naming them that way.
- 1:26:31Speaker 8: So, yeah, there's, like, this little guy, and for some reason, like,
- 1:26:35Speaker 8: He was just brought on to be kind of like
- 1:26:36Speaker 8: an extra in the background. They were going to put
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: makeup on him and he was going to be some weird,
- 1:26:40Speaker 8: you know, creature in the background.
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: Brando thinks this guy is the greatest thing in the world.
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: And he's like, I want him in all my scenes.
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: I want him to be dressed like me in every scene.
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: Like, this is all Brando. None of this is in
- 1:26:54Speaker 8: the script. It's all Brando being a crazy person. So
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: you start seeing, like, Brando coming up with these ridiculous ideas.
- 1:27:01Speaker 8: Watch the movie. It's freaking amazing because... Just the things
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: that he's doing to sabotage the movie. The fact that
- 1:27:08Speaker 8: there becomes like a little standoff war of... Brando won't
- 1:27:12Speaker 8: come out of his trailer until Val Kilmer comes out
- 1:27:15Speaker 8: of his trailer.
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: And Val won't come out of his trailer.
- 1:27:17Speaker 8: I mean, you've got entire hordes of people in makeup.
- 1:27:21Speaker 8: They're doing full creature makeup for all these extras. They're
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: all sitting in makeup in the heat on this island
- 1:27:28Speaker 8: waiting for these two idiots to come off of their
- 1:27:30Speaker 8: little pissing contest. We haven't even gotten to the director.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: So you learn.
- 1:27:34Speaker 8: about the director and how much he's committed to it
- 1:27:37Speaker 8: and how much he wants to do it. I want
- 1:27:39Speaker 8: to like, that's the reason to watch it. When you
- 1:27:41Speaker 8: get midway in towards the end and start finding out the,
- 1:27:44Speaker 8: the way that his plot line.
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: His real life story comes about.
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: It's insanity.
- 1:27:51Speaker 8: I mean, the, the way that it turns out for
- 1:27:53Speaker 8: that director is so damn entertaining. So I, yeah, if
- 1:27:57Speaker 8: you have any interest in, in this insane.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: Version of Island, Dr. Moreau, Definitely watch this. Lost Soul.
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: And he does not have progeria. I would attempt to
- 1:28:10Speaker 6: say it if you want me to.
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: Because you like saying fun words.
- 1:28:13Speaker 6: This one's not a fun word. This is a lot
- 1:28:16Speaker 6: of words with a lot of big letters. Well, I
- 1:28:18Speaker 6: guess the letters are all the same size, but they're
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: big words. There's a lot of letters in these words.
- 1:28:23Speaker 6: Shut up. Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type 2.
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: That is too long a phrase.
- 1:28:33Speaker 6: It's like M-O-P-D-2. That's like moped.
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: He's got moped.
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: That is a disease.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I do question sometimes these people on
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: their mopeds. Mopeds.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: Mopeds.
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: People, we really need to get a fundraiser going for mopeds.
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: They are a blight on humanity. Although I do love
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: Michael Moore's song about mopeds. Downtown.
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: It's pretty entertaining, actually.
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: I randomly heard it on the radio and went, what
- 1:29:00Speaker 8: is this and why am I not listening to more
- 1:29:02Speaker 8: of it?
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: Macklemore and Rowdy.
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: It's pretty entertaining.
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: Write songs about thrift stores and mopeds. What more do
- 1:29:07Speaker 6: you need in life?
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: Okay, sorry.
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: I don't know. That's, I mean, yeah.
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: Again, I can't, I can go on and tell you
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: more stuff, but it's worth watching.
- 1:29:16Speaker 6: That's all right. I quit listening a long time ago.
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: It's entertaining and it's, yeah.
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: I was too busy looking up primordial dwarves.
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: It's entertaining and worth watching if you like that sort
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: of thing.
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: Watching dwarves is fun?
- 1:29:29Speaker 8: I mean, he's an interesting little dude. He speaks Spanish,
- 1:29:32Speaker 8: and at one point, Marlon Brando pretends like he knows
- 1:29:35Speaker 8: what he's saying.
- 1:29:36Speaker 6: Does he just kind of nod and say.
- 1:29:38Speaker 8: No, that's why he liked him so much, because he
- 1:29:41Speaker 8: pretended like... Because there's another guy, and again, another crazy story.
- 1:29:44Speaker 8: The other guy that was supposed to be... Because they
- 1:29:46Speaker 8: also do this back and forth on who was supposed
- 1:29:48Speaker 8: to have a role. Val Kilmer's the lead, and then
- 1:29:52Speaker 8: his ego trip is Oh, I don't want to do
- 1:29:55Speaker 8: that much time.
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: I need my time on.
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: Set to be cut back by 40 percent.
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: So then they're like, what the hell do we do?
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: This is our lead. Like this is I mean, again,
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: he's one of the biggest movie stars in.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: The world at that point. They're like, we're banking this.
- 1:30:10Speaker 8: We're getting our funding, bringing people into the seats because
- 1:30:13Speaker 8: it's a Val Kilmer movie. And this jerk just decided
- 1:30:17Speaker 8: he doesn't want to be in most of the movie.
- 1:30:19Speaker 8: So they bump him to like a side, like the
- 1:30:21Speaker 8: doctor's assistant role for a while. Like this is the
- 1:30:25Speaker 8: kind of shit that's going on.
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: It's insanity.
- 1:30:27Speaker 6: There's a reason I've never seen this movie.
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: I kind of want to go back. Like I saw
- 1:30:30Speaker 5: it originally. I might have gone to the theater and
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: seen it.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 1:30:34Speaker 8: But anyway, I want to see it again now because
- 1:30:37Speaker 8: I want to look at the crazy Brando nonsense now
- 1:30:40Speaker 8: and see what all, because I've forgotten most of it.
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: I blocked so much out that I'm kind of going
- 1:30:45Speaker 5: to have to go back and watch it now. It's just,
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: it's insane. And it is very telling, I feel like,
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: that two of the most plagued with horrible production films
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: both star Brando and an aging, pretty damn crazy Brando. Because,
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: I mean, they've now made documentaries on both The Island
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: of Dr. Moreau and Apocalypse Now.
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: That's a fun story.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: Both of which have gone to hell and Brando's kind
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: of behind the scenes. puppet master that he is destroying
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: films because he was an old crazy dude by that point. Oh, Brando.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: What the hell? So anyway, that's most of the movies
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: I've seen.
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: I don't think I've seen anything else. Aside from Crimson Peak.
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: Which I talked about, but what was your take on it? Awesome.
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: Tom Hiddleston's butt.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: That's what brought you to the theater.
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: I did not know there was going to be butt.
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: It's probably a stunt butt.
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: Don't you hate when that happens?
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: I do hate stunt butts. One of my very few
- 1:31:45Speaker 6: purchases today was I bought a Thomas Sharp little, whatever
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: they're called, the pop Funko figures or whatever.
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: Those little tiny plastic dudes.
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: With big heads.
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: Blind boxes.
- 1:31:56Speaker 6: No!
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: That was the other ones. What were the other ones?
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: What are those called?
- 1:31:59Speaker 6: They were the horror classics.
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: Those were pretty cool.
- 1:32:02Speaker 6: I got two of them today, and I got the
- 1:32:04Speaker 6: one that I was like, ooh, I really want this one.
- 1:32:07Speaker 6: I wanted David from Lost Boys. And I got a
- 1:32:10Speaker 6: little Hitchcock, and.
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: He's so Mitch Cox is awesome. I kind of want
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: to steal that.
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: But the David one from Lost Boys has got little chopsticks.
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: He does have chopsticks.
- 1:32:17Speaker 6: And he's got a little takeout container.
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: They're maggots.
- 1:32:23Speaker 6: I love the Lost Boys. I was so excited for
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: that purchase. I don't think I bought anything else.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: I controlled myself for the most part.
- 1:32:31Speaker 6: I wanted you to buy some more of those classic
- 1:32:33Speaker 6: and then if you got ones that I wanted I
- 1:32:35Speaker 6: would have bought them for you. Then when I went
- 1:32:37Speaker 6: back to buy more they were sold out. Motherfucker.
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: They told you you could have the empty box, but.
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: You wouldn't take it.
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: Why do I want the empty box?
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: I've got enough shit on display.
- 1:32:44Speaker 6: I've got enough shit on display as it is.
- 1:32:47Speaker 5: You could make your own store.
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: No, really, you could.
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: Because I was thinking that with mine as I'm shifting
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: things around now.
- 1:32:53Speaker 8: I'm just like, can I just set up a thrift
- 1:32:54Speaker 8: store and set it up directly out of the junk
- 1:32:57Speaker 8: in my house?
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: I'm trying to control myself.
- 1:32:59Speaker 6: If you have a yard sale, don't sell anything I want.
- 1:33:02Speaker 8: No.
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: You don't make enough that way. I need high dollar value.
- 1:33:07Speaker 8: I invested way too much in these things to give
- 1:33:09Speaker 8: them away for a quarter.
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: Yeah, no shit.
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: I gotta at least break even on some of these things.
- 1:33:15Speaker 8: So, if you want to start the Movie Meltdown yard sale, guys,
- 1:33:18Speaker 8: I can start posting it online.
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: I'm having the Movie Meltdown Etsy page.
- 1:33:21Speaker 8: Let me know if you want to buy my junk
- 1:33:23Speaker 8: that's been laying around my house, most of which is
- 1:33:26Speaker 8: Movie Geek related, so it does sort of fit.
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: Will Samantha Massa stand up and say you're selling it? No.
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: I'm staying right there.
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: Alright, so, that was... The bulk of our day here
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: at the old Wizard World.
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: I do love Wizard World.
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun.
- 1:33:40Speaker 6: Too many people, but that's good for them.
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: People is a good thing for these. Otherwise, they don't
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: come back.
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: I'm surprised they came back.
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: There's a lot of conventions out there, so it's good
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: to see people are still supporting them.
- 1:33:53Speaker 8: I still worry that we're going to hit to the
- 1:33:56Speaker 8: tipping point. We're going to over-saturate this market, but I
- 1:34:00Speaker 8: don't know.
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: All these fucking conventions I've been to and I have
- 1:34:03Speaker 6: yet to find Mark Singer. What the fuck is up
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: with that?
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: What is up with that, by the way?
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: I was thinking that as I've got my poster waiting
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: for him to sign it.
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: I mean, Don Coscarelli's cool. He shows up places. Mark Singer,
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: I'm talking to you.
- 1:34:14Speaker 8: Get yourself to this part of the world so we
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: can have you sign our poster.
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: There's only like five people. There's not even five people
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: that I'm like uber concerned about. There's like two people
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: whose autograph I'm like, That person and that person, and
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: that's what I need before I die. And there's something
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: that's not reasonable. I'm not going to get Tom Hiddleston's
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: autograph in the really real world or Michael Fassbender. I'm
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: talking about reasonable requests. Mark Singer, I think, is a
- 1:34:38Speaker 6: reasonable request.
- 1:34:39Speaker 8: Especially in the convention world. It really does seem like
- 1:34:41Speaker 8: we should run into him more often than the night
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: that we do.
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: And R.L.
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: Stine.
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: Bucker is at a convention this weekend in one of
- 1:34:50Speaker 6: the Carolinas that's far away.
- 1:34:53Speaker 5: Carolina people, let us know which one.
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: I mean, the convention's y'all-fest.
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: Thank God it's not here.
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: Well, because it's young adults.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: I try to redeem this part of the country as
- 1:35:06Speaker 8: best I can, but sometimes it's hopeless.
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: You don't even know how sad. I was totally like, dude,
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: I could make. But then I'm like, dude, it's 10
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: hours just to get there.
- 1:35:16Speaker 10: So.
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: I ordered an autographed copy, but it's not the same.
- 1:35:22Speaker 6: It's him scrolling my name on it.
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: It's not the same.
- 1:35:25Speaker 6: It's not the same. So, R.L. Stanton, if you're out there, too,
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: you pick up Mark Singer. Meet me in Louisville somewhere. Carpool.
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: I can't think of anybody else. Anybody else that I
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: want to get their autograph is probably dead.
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: Nimoy.
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: Yeah, under Nimoy.
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: We missed the Nimoy window. Bones.
- 1:35:45Speaker 6: DeForest Kelly.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:35:47Speaker 6: Original bones.
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: I was just like, that TV show? I don't want
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: that Deschanel girl.
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: No, fuck her. She's got a weird face.
- 1:35:54Speaker 5: She's just mad because she's not as cute as her sister.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: And her sister kind of gets on my nerves now, too.
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: So the whole Deschanel family is going down in their stock.
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: And David Boreanaz, his hair has always been weird. What
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: the fuck, dude?
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: It's his trademark, man.
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: Come on.
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: It's just always been weird, even from Angel. I'm just like, dude,
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: what the hell's up with your hair? At least Spike
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: had decent hair. Not really, but yeah, that's who I want.
- 1:36:16Speaker 6: DeForest Kelly. Actually, I would take DeForest Kelly over Leonard Nimoy. Yeah.
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: These are going to be tough kids either way.
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: At least to have them sign it there in person
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: for you.
- 1:36:25Speaker 6: Yeah, for realsies.
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: Witherworld, see what you can do for future.
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: When you resurrect me some DeForest Kelly.
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: I will be impressed.
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: No shit. I'll be first in line. I'll even pay
- 1:36:40Speaker 6: for that photo op.
- 1:36:41Speaker 10: Maybe.
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: I mean, at.
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: That point, check and see. Go to wizardworld.com and see
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: who they have. They do have like 40 different things that.
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: You can go.
- 1:36:50Speaker 5: There's a ton of.
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: Wizard World shows there all over the country. So we
- 1:36:54Speaker 8: thank them for letting us be part of this one.
- 1:36:57Speaker 8: So wizardworld.com and see where they will be next.
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: And go there.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: See if you can get some of those dead people
- 1:37:03Speaker 5: lined up. That'd be pretty awesome.
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: Or Mark Singer.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: Or Mark Singer.
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: He's not even dead yet.
- 1:37:07Speaker 5: So please hurry up and get him.
- 1:37:09Speaker 6: Because last time he almost died.
- 1:37:11Speaker 8: No, we were going to see him. And then he
- 1:37:13Speaker 8: got some sort of horrible disease. It might have been Progeria.
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: Progeria!
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: He didn't get Progeria.
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: Don't get Spina Bifida, Mark.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: Just saying.
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: Don't get Juliana Magaliz either.
- 1:37:24Speaker 8: Don't get Magaliz. Please bring Margalise so we can get
- 1:37:29Speaker 8: her to sign it. If you could get her to
- 1:37:30Speaker 8: sign it the way that we say it. I don't
- 1:37:33Speaker 8: even know how that is, but we really.
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: Need to work on that.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: Juliana Margalise.
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: We do have an in, though.
- 1:37:38Speaker 6: I'm not even saying it correctly. It's part of the thing.
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: We do have an in.
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: Do we now?
- 1:37:42Speaker 8: Because Jess Weixler works on The Good Wife with.
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: Juliana Margulies. So I'm going to put.
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: The word into jest. Tell her to get.
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: Does she know Mark Singer?
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: Juliana Margulies.
- 1:37:53Speaker 6: Does Juliana Margulies know Mark Singer?
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: Are you still arranging that carpool?
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: Juliana, look, get in the car.
- 1:38:00Speaker 5: Swing by R.L. Stine's house.
- 1:38:02Speaker 8: Now, while you're coming down the 151, that might be
- 1:38:05Speaker 8: a made-up highway, pick up Mark Singer and get on
- 1:38:09Speaker 8: over here.
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: I'll take him out to dinner. White Castle it is.
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: There you go.
- 1:38:16Speaker 6: I would take them all the way, Castle.
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: As long as you don't want fancy food, we'll even
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: spring for dinner.
- 1:38:20Speaker 6: Hey, don't even talk, bitch. I will spring for them
- 1:38:22Speaker 6: chicken ring sandwiches, and they are not cheap.
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: Classy living, Misty.
- 1:38:26Speaker 6: With cheese.
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: Classy living.
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: Cheese, too.
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: Not the real sticks.
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: Oh, Lord.
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: On that note, I think we better wrap this up
- 1:38:37Speaker 5: and get out of here.
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: I know, dude. It's gotten dark on the roof.
- 1:38:41Speaker 8: So once again, thank you to Epion5 for talking to
- 1:38:44Speaker 8: us this episode, and he might just turn up in
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: a future episode.
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: Just saying.
- 1:38:48Speaker 8: And once again, wizardworld.com. Go see what else they have
- 1:38:51Speaker 8: in the works. Otherwise, that about does it. We will
- 1:38:53Speaker 8: return next time. Same geek feed.
