Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver
- 0:04Speaker 1: Michael Bumpus.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Playfake, go to roll right, dumps it off into the
- 0:08Speaker 2: right flass to Michael Bumpers, who bounces off of one tackler,
- 0:11Speaker 2: gets inside the forty down of the thirty five yard line.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Powered by seahawks dot Com.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Matt Pumpfak's looking at the goal line. He throws it
- 0:18Speaker 2: into the end zone.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Touchdown.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Say Hawks, it's Michael Thumps with a.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Diving catching the end zone on ten yard touchdown reception
- 0:26Speaker 4: for Bumpers, and the kid out of Washington State has
- 0:29Speaker 4: found himself a place on this team.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Now here's your host, Nasa Choviie.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Well, it was not the result the Seahawks wanted on
- 0:37Speaker 3: their first opening game at Loomingfield as they followed the
- 0:40Speaker 3: Rams thirty to thirteen. It wasn't great. I'm not gonna
- 0:44Speaker 3: lie to see the score. You know. The game was
- 0:46Speaker 3: probably a little closer than it looked. But the Seahawks
- 0:48Speaker 3: did follow the Rams in the week one matchup in
- 0:51Speaker 3: the division. But we're gonna bring in the guy that
- 0:53Speaker 3: we talk to every week after Seahawks game, win, lose
- 0:55Speaker 3: or draw. Let's hear from our guy, Ray Roberts.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It's time to go inside the trenches with former Seahawk
- 1:04Speaker 1: Ray Roberts.
- 1:06Speaker 3: What's up, big Ray? How you doing, man?
- 1:08Speaker 5: I'm not that big dog. How you doing?
- 1:10Speaker 3: We're me and Bump a surviving man. We took our
- 1:13Speaker 3: lumps a little bit yesterday, but we're pulling it together
- 1:15Speaker 3: because right now it is very doom and gloom in
- 1:17Speaker 3: the Pacific Northwest. Everyone is just like, can't handle it.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Everyone thought there'd be a better performance on Sunday, but
- 1:23Speaker 3: it is what it is. Ray, tell me why it
- 1:26Speaker 3: wasn't as bad as it looked on Sunday. Give me
- 1:28Speaker 3: something positive.
- 1:29Speaker 6: Well, the first positive thing I'm going to give you
- 1:32Speaker 6: is that all the things are correct. The on offense
- 1:35Speaker 6: played pretty good offensive football in the first half. They
- 1:40Speaker 6: held the Rams to basically two yards to carry in
- 1:44Speaker 6: the running game, and they carried the ball maybe forty times.
- 1:46Speaker 6: So the areas where the Seaalks defense struggled last year,
- 1:50Speaker 6: they actually was lights out on it.
- 1:52Speaker 5: It's just in some other eras.
- 1:53Speaker 6: That they need to pick up and listen to the
- 1:56Speaker 6: guys in the post game, they don't seem too concerned
- 1:58Speaker 6: about it. Pete Carroll was a little surprised, obviously by
- 2:01Speaker 6: the way it started out and finished, but he was,
- 2:04Speaker 6: But he wasn't. He didn't seem scared or worried about
- 2:07Speaker 6: that they couldn't make the corrections, Big Gray.
- 2:10Speaker 7: That's the thing that that stuck with me is that
- 2:13Speaker 7: I look across the league and I see the Bengals
- 2:15Speaker 7: go down.
- 2:17Speaker 8: I see who else wind that anyway.
- 2:20Speaker 7: I just see matches across the league where teams that
- 2:22Speaker 7: are favorite to win take the l. When you are
- 2:25Speaker 7: a player in this league and it doesn't work out
- 2:27Speaker 7: week one, what's the feeling like in that room?
- 2:30Speaker 3: You know?
- 2:30Speaker 7: Is it lived to find another day? Is the sky falling?
- 2:34Speaker 7: I mean, take us back to your playing days and
- 2:36Speaker 7: how you felt after a Week one loss.
- 2:39Speaker 6: Well, unfortunately, Big Mike, like I was never on a
- 2:42Speaker 6: team that was stacked as the seahawktion was, had so
- 2:46Speaker 6: many expectations. But I will say, you know, listen to
- 2:50Speaker 6: the leaders of this team. Listen to Pete Carroll and
- 2:53Speaker 6: then Gino Smith and then even Bobby Wagner.
- 2:57Speaker 5: And Bobby Wagner even said, hey man, it's just week one.
- 3:00Speaker 6: If you look around the league, I think the Chargers
- 3:02Speaker 6: are on and one the Bengals are owing one, the
- 3:05Speaker 6: Chiefs are on and one, the Seahawks are owing one.
- 3:07Speaker 5: You have sixteen more games to play, and all of
- 3:10Speaker 5: the things that they talked about.
- 3:12Speaker 6: That they needed to improve on it they didn't play
- 3:14Speaker 6: well and are things that you can fix. It's not
- 3:17Speaker 6: like you don't have the skill, or you don't have
- 3:18Speaker 6: the talent, or you haven't coached up what have you.
- 3:21Speaker 6: Like Pete said, it just didn't come together the way
- 3:24Speaker 6: that they had seen it in practice. And so I
- 3:26Speaker 6: think you'll put some infantis on maybe the effort of
- 3:28Speaker 6: the smaller details, and I think that'll be fun.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Ray kind of getting in more than nitty gritty offensively.
- 3:35Speaker 3: You know, the Seahawks scored on most of their possessions
- 3:37Speaker 3: in the first half, and in the second half they
- 3:39Speaker 3: just seemed like they couldn't stay on the field, running
- 3:41Speaker 3: only fourteen plays in that second half. Why do you
- 3:43Speaker 3: think they weren't able to get into a rhythm?
- 3:46Speaker 6: You know, I think some of it too, is like
- 3:49Speaker 6: the defense is on the field for so long, like
- 3:52Speaker 6: the are the rams are going on like twelve and
- 3:54Speaker 6: thirteen and fourteen play drives, and so as an offense,
- 3:57Speaker 6: you kind of get out of a you kind of
- 3:58Speaker 6: get out of sync a little bit, you know, you
- 4:00Speaker 6: don't have any rhythm and how you're what you're doing,
- 4:02Speaker 6: and then they just couldn't find, you know, some breaks
- 4:05Speaker 6: here in the passing game. You know, it just really
- 4:07Speaker 6: couldn't get the passing game going. I think Gino was
- 4:10Speaker 6: three or nine I think in the second half, uh
- 4:12Speaker 6: and so just didn't really get anything going in that space.
- 4:15Speaker 6: And then you have your two offensive tackles go down
- 4:17Speaker 6: and that, honestly, that seemed to be what unglued the
- 4:21Speaker 6: whole offense. It just seemed like everything fell apart once
- 4:24Speaker 6: the tackles went down, and uh and the backups came
- 4:28Speaker 6: in and Stone force if did okay, gave up one pressure.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Jake Kern didn't do as well. Gave up quite a
- 4:33Speaker 6: few pressures and I think eight pressures in his ten snaps.
- 4:37Speaker 6: So that didn't help at all. So just the offense
- 4:40Speaker 6: got out of rhythm, got out of scene, couldn't stay,
- 4:42Speaker 6: you know, get back to what they were doing in
- 4:43Speaker 6: the first half, and they were running the ball well
- 4:46Speaker 6: uh K nine was averaging probably about five or six
- 4:49Speaker 6: hours of carry.
- 4:50Speaker 5: So just never could get the rhythm back in the
- 4:52Speaker 5: second half.
- 4:54Speaker 7: I was gonna ask you about K nine man, what
- 4:55Speaker 7: did you see from him? Why was he able to
- 4:57Speaker 7: bring off some of the big runs that we saw?
- 5:00Speaker 7: And also what did you see from Zach Charbonne. I
- 5:02Speaker 7: know there's not a lot to work with when it
- 5:04Speaker 7: comes to numbers, but did you see any potential in
- 5:07Speaker 7: the combo?
- 5:07Speaker 8: And then specifically, what'd you see in Knin?
- 5:10Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 5:10Speaker 6: Well, with Canaan, I thought it was interesting in the
- 5:13Speaker 6: postgame when Robert Turbin said that, you know, he seemed
- 5:16Speaker 6: more patient, but being patient is what he always had.
- 5:19Speaker 6: But I think what he did better this in his
- 5:22Speaker 6: first game was he was he wasn't too patient, So
- 5:26Speaker 6: he was patient enough to wait for the hole to develop,
- 5:28Speaker 6: and then he exploded.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Through the hole.
- 5:30Speaker 6: And then there was a couple of times where he
- 5:32Speaker 6: bounced it to the outside and he's able to He's
- 5:34Speaker 6: one of the better running backs in the league at
- 5:36Speaker 6: making people miss, and so he did a few of
- 5:38Speaker 6: those runs in Mason yards.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I just liked how he was patient and.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Then really decisive versus just being patient the whole time
- 5:45Speaker 6: and trying to stay behind the line of scrimmage and
- 5:48Speaker 6: you know, pick and pull for different little holes.
- 5:50Speaker 5: He had a little bit of patience and then exploded
- 5:52Speaker 5: to the hole and.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Then Sharbonay, you know, with the only I think he
- 5:55Speaker 6: had two or three carries, but the force at which
- 5:58Speaker 6: he was he was running the ball could you could
- 6:00Speaker 6: tell that he carries a punch. And so it's two
- 6:02Speaker 6: totally different style running backs. I think will work well
- 6:06Speaker 6: with this offense. Because early in the game, in the
- 6:08Speaker 6: first half, if you look go back and look at
- 6:10Speaker 6: the game, man, they were getting a lot of push
- 6:13Speaker 6: on this Rams defense in the middle of the defense,
- 6:16Speaker 6: even with Aaron Donald there, Like Aaron Donald was still
- 6:18Speaker 6: doing his thing, but they were making some room to
- 6:21Speaker 6: run the ball in the middle of that defense.
- 6:23Speaker 5: And then in the second half they just didn't have
- 6:25Speaker 5: the ball enough to even get that.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Going fourteen plays is not enough to get anybody in
- 6:30Speaker 6: any kind of rhythm.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Well, one thing, Ray, I know, five point three yards
- 6:34Speaker 3: of carry is going to work any given Sunday. So
- 6:36Speaker 3: hopefully the Seahawks and can walk and get more opportunities.
- 6:39Speaker 3: But overall, Ray, you know, you always want to hope
- 6:41Speaker 3: to learn lessons you know about your team and about
- 6:44Speaker 3: your players in wins. Obviously that wasn't the case for
- 6:46Speaker 3: the Seahawks. But you know, can a game like this
- 6:49Speaker 3: in Week one turn out to be a good thing?
- 6:52Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 6:52Speaker 6: Absolutely, I think because you know, we talked about this
- 6:55Speaker 6: in the pregame and you don't want to rely on
- 6:57Speaker 6: a bunch of rookies and young players. But what those
- 7:00Speaker 6: young players I think probably learned yesterday, and I think
- 7:03Speaker 6: this is why we kept hearing this idea around.
- 7:07Speaker 5: They got the other team, wanted it more, they worked harder.
- 7:10Speaker 6: I don't I think that's that was an internal locker
- 7:12Speaker 6: room message that they were giving to themselves to kind
- 7:14Speaker 6: of let everybody put everyone on notice that all the
- 7:17Speaker 6: little details matter. And so whether it's like you're filling
- 7:21Speaker 6: in the right gap, whether you're fitting in the right
- 7:24Speaker 6: space that you're supposed to fit along the defensive line,
- 7:26Speaker 6: if you're offensive line, if you're like getting.
- 7:28Speaker 5: The right angle, the right footwork, the.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Right pad level, the running back to quarterbacks, all those
- 7:33Speaker 6: little bitty things matter. And I think that's what they
- 7:36Speaker 6: were speaking to more than effort, because even when I
- 7:38Speaker 6: went back and watched the film, I didn't say a
- 7:40Speaker 6: lack of effort.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Maybe I saw a lack of efforts.
- 7:43Speaker 6: As it pertained to attention to the details, and I
- 7:46Speaker 6: think that is what they're going to get back on.
- 7:48Speaker 6: The smaller details, I think are the things that kind
- 7:50Speaker 6: of cost them a lot in the in this game,
- 7:53Speaker 6: especially on defense, a big ray.
- 7:57Speaker 8: We know the tackles were banged up last game.
- 7:59Speaker 7: You have eyes on the bench that I think a
- 8:01Speaker 7: lot of fans fans are anxious to see. If you
- 8:05Speaker 7: were the head coach of the offensive coordinator, would you
- 8:07Speaker 7: explore with the lineup on that offensive line, even if
- 8:11Speaker 7: your two tackles are healthy, would you mix things up
- 8:14Speaker 7: or would you give this this group another chance to
- 8:16Speaker 7: try to get things right?
- 8:18Speaker 6: No, I think if Big Aid and Charles are healthy,
- 8:23Speaker 6: did you stay with the same line you started with it?
- 8:25Speaker 6: They were doing fun like they did well in the
- 8:28Speaker 6: first half. That the sacks in the game came once
- 8:31Speaker 6: the two tackles went out, and so they were protecting well,
- 8:34Speaker 6: they were running the ball well, and so with the
- 8:37Speaker 6: two tackles out, now you may have to figure some
- 8:39Speaker 6: things out.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Jake Curry and who normally showed up pretty good.
- 8:42Speaker 6: He's not the most athletic dude, the most skillful guy,
- 8:44Speaker 6: but he's a good football player and he doesn't normally
- 8:47Speaker 6: give up pressures like that, and then Stone Foresight. When
- 8:50Speaker 6: I went back and watched, it played better than I thought.
- 8:52Speaker 6: The only thing is with those two in there, you're
- 8:54Speaker 6: going to have to really, I think, rely more on
- 8:57Speaker 6: the running game.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Like use their physicality to kind of get the running.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Game on to the feed the flats and pass and
- 9:02Speaker 6: moving the pocket in the passing game. I don't know
- 9:04Speaker 6: if they'll hold up if they have to play if
- 9:06Speaker 6: you just drop back throwing the ball, just dropping straight
- 9:08Speaker 6: back the whole game. So, but if they started, if
- 9:11Speaker 6: Lucas and Charles are healthy, I don't I don't see
- 9:14Speaker 6: any issue with what they have upfront and how they played.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Ray.
- 9:18Speaker 3: You know, every time the Seahawks play the Detroit Lions,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you know, it makes me think of you. It is,
- 9:24Speaker 3: in fact, the Ray Roberts Bull. I'm calling it right now, Bump.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Anytime this game is referred to you from moving forward,
- 9:29Speaker 3: it's the Ray Roberts Bull. We are excited for this game.
- 9:33Speaker 3: It's gonna be fun. We get going at ten am
- 9:35Speaker 3: on Seattle Sports in Seahawks Radio Network on Sunday. Big Ray,
- 9:39Speaker 3: thanks for joining us and we'll talk to you later
- 9:40Speaker 3: this week. Man.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Thanks Ray, yes, sir, thanks for having me. Dog.
- 9:43Speaker 3: All right, bump, let's get back into it. Tell everybody
- 9:46Speaker 3: what we saw, what had happened, See what.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Happened at first, What that happened was unhawked talk.
- 9:55Speaker 3: It was just one of those days for the Hawks men.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I mean a game where you were the favorites, most
- 9:59Speaker 3: people thought you were. Come out there and handle business
- 10:01Speaker 3: at home. Didn't go your way. I don't think anyone
- 10:04Speaker 3: slept on the Rams. Definitely knowing in this building, because
- 10:06Speaker 3: it doesn't matter who this Rams team is. It doesn't
- 10:08Speaker 3: matter wh's coaching him. It's Jeff Fisher, if Sean McVay,
- 10:11Speaker 3: doesn't matter if it was twenty thirteen when the Seahawks
- 10:13Speaker 3: won or Super Bowl, if it's right now. The Rams
- 10:15Speaker 3: play the Seahawks tough. It's a division game. It's always
- 10:18Speaker 3: gonna be a tough between these two teams. But man,
- 10:21Speaker 3: yesterday it was no different.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Man.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I mean, come right out of the gates, bump, opening drive,
- 10:26Speaker 3: they had the set of the Seahawks ceter for a
- 10:28Speaker 3: field goal, but the Rams come right back, punch them
- 10:31Speaker 3: in the face, and they go sixteen plays seventy five yards,
- 10:36Speaker 3: ending with a Kyrine Williams touchdown, making the score seven
- 10:38Speaker 3: to three. Bombs not to start you were hoping for
- 10:40Speaker 3: for Seattle.
- 10:42Speaker 7: Nah Man, and they it seemed like twenty five plays.
- 10:45Speaker 7: It took a long time, I believe you had. Each
- 10:47Speaker 7: team had one possession in the first quarter, then was
- 10:49Speaker 7: on to the second quarter. But then the Hawks to
- 10:51Speaker 7: do their thing right. You go twelve plays, seventy five yards.
- 10:54Speaker 7: You iso dk are not isolating. It was really an
- 10:57Speaker 7: even a balanced set. We'll talk about this in film room.
- 11:00Speaker 7: I got them one on one boom touchdown, ten to seven,
- 11:02Speaker 7: and then you add another field goal before you head
- 11:05Speaker 7: into the locker room.
- 11:06Speaker 8: This thirteen to seven. You're feeling good about this team.
- 11:09Speaker 7: The first half had its ups and downs, but you're ahead,
- 11:12Speaker 7: so you're thinking, okay, second half are gonna come out
- 11:14Speaker 7: and they'll be fine.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what we thought. We talked about at the
- 11:17Speaker 3: halftime show, exactly the same thing you're saying now is Seahawks,
- 11:19Speaker 3: you need to just fine tune a couple of little things.
- 11:21Speaker 3: And that's exactly how we thought it'd go. You're playing
- 11:23Speaker 3: the Rams, They're gonna play it tight. And then Sean
- 11:25Speaker 3: McVay pal Moyer said this last night. They threw everything
- 11:27Speaker 3: at us with all the emotions and everything that you
- 11:30Speaker 3: know you do in a Sean McVay offense with Stafford back.
- 11:32Speaker 3: So you thought the Seahawks ton of weather that storm,
- 11:34Speaker 3: but man, coming out a halftime really demoralizing star at
- 11:37Speaker 3: Rams have another great drive, going ten plays seventy six
- 11:40Speaker 3: yards ending in another Kien Williams touchdown. The Rams would
- 11:43Speaker 3: take the lead, bump, never look back. And here's really
- 11:46Speaker 3: what you need to know in terms of the stats.
- 11:47Speaker 3: In the second half, Rams scored on their final five possessions.
- 11:51Speaker 3: On the Seahawks final five possessions, they went punt, punt, punt, punt,
- 11:55Speaker 3: end of game and the Hawks ran fourteen plays in
- 11:57Speaker 3: the second half.
- 11:59Speaker 7: Four team plays, forty six plays total. They'll let you
- 12:03Speaker 7: notice how much in control the Rams were. The Hawks
- 12:07Speaker 7: had the ball for two minutes and thirty eight seconds
- 12:09Speaker 7: and a third and two twenty eight in the fourth. Overall,
- 12:12Speaker 7: the Rams dominated possession thirty nine minutes twenty three seconds
- 12:15Speaker 7: to the Hawks twenty minutes and thirty seven seconds.
- 12:18Speaker 8: And then Matthew Stafford.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Reminded us, well, we knew who he was, so y'all
- 12:22Speaker 7: must have forgot because I was gone, only played nine
- 12:24Speaker 7: games last year. He goes twenty four to thirty eight,
- 12:26Speaker 7: three thirty four and attacked the middle of the field.
- 12:30Speaker 7: I think if you watch this game, even if you're
- 12:31Speaker 7: just a casual fan to really know anything about football,
- 12:34Speaker 7: you go, hey, why did they keep throwing it in
- 12:36Speaker 7: between the hashes pushes the middle of the field.
- 12:38Speaker 8: That's where they exploited this defense.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Yeah, man, guys like Chu Chu at Well went crazy
- 12:43Speaker 3: six receptions one hundred nineteen yards, and Pooka Nakua, the
- 12:46Speaker 3: former U dow Husky for two years, had ten receptions
- 12:49Speaker 3: one hundred and nineteen yards. He kind of did a
- 12:51Speaker 3: nice job filling in that Cooper Cup role. Obviously those
- 12:53Speaker 3: two players are not Cooper Cup, but they filled in
- 12:55Speaker 3: that role nicely. There got open over the middle of field.
- 12:57Speaker 3: They did a lot of things to work to get
- 12:59Speaker 3: open off some of the pressure. The Seahawks were doing
- 13:01Speaker 3: different things, and at the end of the day, it
- 13:03Speaker 3: was a tail two halfs. The Seahawks couldn't get anything
- 13:05Speaker 3: going in the second half, being outscored twenty three to zero.
- 13:09Speaker 3: But Bump, here's why I'm gonna tell you Seahawks fans
- 13:11Speaker 3: shouldn't feel that bad. I was thinking about this going
- 13:14Speaker 3: through the drive chart. Okay, Seahawks did only have fourteen
- 13:17Speaker 3: plays in the second half, right, this game really could
- 13:21Speaker 3: have been impacted by three plays. And it's three third downs.
- 13:25Speaker 3: So the first third down crucial. It's the first Seahawks
- 13:27Speaker 3: first possession the second half. What's the score of that point?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Fourteen to thirteen? You get it first down. Even if
- 13:33Speaker 3: you don't score, maybe you flip the field. Maybe that
- 13:35Speaker 3: changes the game a little bit. Next series, now they're
- 13:38Speaker 3: down seventeen thirteen. Okay, that's a one score game. They
- 13:41Speaker 3: can't convert on that third down, so you don't do
- 13:43Speaker 3: anything to change field position, to do nothing, they take
- 13:45Speaker 3: time off the clock, and then it happens. Then the
- 13:47Speaker 3: next third down they have, now they're down twenty four
- 13:50Speaker 3: to thirteen. Yes, they're down eleven points, but with nine
- 13:53Speaker 3: to forty five in the fourth quarter. This is the NFL.
- 13:55Speaker 3: That is essentially, you go down there and score, it's
- 13:57Speaker 3: one possession game and you're right back in it. But
- 13:59Speaker 3: to go to not convert on any one of those
- 14:02Speaker 3: third downs, and then the next time they had a
- 14:03Speaker 3: third down they're down twenty seven to thirteen. You don't
- 14:05Speaker 3: get sack two times and the game's over all. That's
- 14:08Speaker 3: to say, do they need to execute better? Of course
- 14:10Speaker 3: they do. They need to bet on a third down. Yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 3: two for nine is not good enough. But I'm just
- 14:13Speaker 3: saying it's not as far as people think it was.
- 14:16Speaker 3: They not played great, of course not, but they're right there.
- 14:18Speaker 3: If they execute on a couple of those plays, they
- 14:20Speaker 3: can do better. You said it earlier. Do you think
- 14:22Speaker 3: the Bengals are gonna score a zero or three points
- 14:24Speaker 3: the rest of the year? Of course not. So I
- 14:27Speaker 3: just think people need to just pump the brakes a
- 14:29Speaker 3: little bit, you know what I mean?
- 14:30Speaker 7: Yeah, man, it's it's the gift in the curse of
- 14:33Speaker 7: Week one because teams that came out and bald all
- 14:37Speaker 7: fans to think of Super Bowl, baby playoffs, heavy division,
- 14:40Speaker 7: we got it now. Teams that came out and the
- 14:42Speaker 7: team didn't look as hot. Then you know you're thinking,
- 14:45Speaker 7: oh my god, what have we gonna do? This guy
- 14:46Speaker 7: is falling. But this is a game of adjustments. The
- 14:50Speaker 7: curse also of football is that you got a week
- 14:52Speaker 7: to digest and talk about come up with scenarios. So
- 14:55Speaker 7: you know what we understand they took a l wasn't
- 14:57Speaker 7: a great performance, but you and I know better then
- 15:00Speaker 7: it jumped to too many conclusions after week one.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Oh of course not, of course not. So let's get
- 15:05Speaker 3: right into let's talk about the playmakers.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Playmakers.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Holy all right, we're looking at the playmakers from this
- 15:22Speaker 3: matchup in Week one against the Rams. It's not a
- 15:25Speaker 3: big of a list as you think, just because you
- 15:27Speaker 3: look at the stat sheet. Not a lot of plays
- 15:28Speaker 3: on offense, too many plays on defense. But I'll get
- 15:30Speaker 3: it started with the running back who did look well,
- 15:32Speaker 3: ken Walker. Twelve carries, sixty four yards average, five point
- 15:36Speaker 3: three yards of carry. We talked about it with Ray
- 15:38Speaker 3: Roberts a little bit earlier. If they had more opportunities,
- 15:40Speaker 3: I think ken Walker could have a really big game,
- 15:43Speaker 3: you know, a couple of runs out on the sideline
- 15:44Speaker 3: and just being patient, all the stuff that they talked
- 15:46Speaker 3: about Turbot talked about. I think that's a really good
- 15:48Speaker 3: sign for ken Walker. You know, he had been banged
- 15:51Speaker 3: up with some injuries throughout camp. We saw no inkling
- 15:54Speaker 3: of that at all on Sunday, So I think it's
- 15:56Speaker 3: a good start for ken Walker. Once he gets more
- 15:58Speaker 3: than twelve carries. If he's around twenty years carries or
- 16:00Speaker 3: so that he's going over one hundred yards every game.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think that's how good he is.
- 16:04Speaker 8: Yeah, I was surprised with how he looked, honestly.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I know with that growing entry, that's your lateral movement explosiveness,
- 16:08Speaker 7: and he looked pretty good. Man had a couple of
- 16:10Speaker 7: big runs, so good for him. Yeah, Man, and DK
- 16:12Speaker 7: Metcalf looked good Man. Three receptions, forty seven yards, one touchdown.
- 16:16Speaker 7: The touchdown that he made, he got into his bag,
- 16:19Speaker 7: like I see. I keep seeing the evolution of DK
- 16:22Speaker 7: every single year. And now with that touchdown, he tied
- 16:24Speaker 7: Daryl Taylor for sixth places on the Seattle's all time
- 16:27Speaker 7: receiving touchdown list with thirty six.
- 16:30Speaker 8: So it's you can.
- 16:31Speaker 7: Only go up from here, man, you can only go
- 16:33Speaker 7: up when it comes to DK and Tyler and JSN.
- 16:36Speaker 7: I know we're not gonna mention those guys, but when
- 16:38Speaker 7: you see d K do well, that means more attention
- 16:40Speaker 7: will be on him and other guy's be able to eat.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yeah, no question about it. Again. It's all about It's
- 16:44Speaker 3: all about for offensively, it's all about snaps. You don't
- 16:47Speaker 3: have forty six naps it's not enough to get your
- 16:49Speaker 3: playmakers really involved. But good to see DK get loose
- 16:51Speaker 3: a little bit there. And then I think the best
- 16:54Speaker 3: performance of the day was number fifty four, his big homecoming.
- 16:58Speaker 3: That moment was really special to Washington. Him out of
- 17:00Speaker 3: the tunnel. You know, Bobby Wagner back in the Seahawks uniform.
- 17:03Speaker 3: All is right with the world, and the crowd has
- 17:05Speaker 3: shown their love because everyone to see how obviously loves
- 17:07Speaker 3: Bobby Wagner. He's a future Hall of Famer. And the
- 17:10Speaker 3: thing about people in the Pacific Northwest is you claim
- 17:12Speaker 3: Bobby Wagner is yours man. When you see Bobby on
- 17:14Speaker 3: the street, you have some pride because you know that
- 17:16Speaker 3: dude put on for the city and put on for
- 17:19Speaker 3: this team for a really long time. So good to
- 17:20Speaker 3: see him back. And then on the field, he didn't disappoint.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Nineteen tackles nine solo won TfL. And before people jump
- 17:27Speaker 3: on us and say, hey, nineteen tackles, who cares, they're
- 17:30Speaker 3: all down the field, blah blah blah, go back and
- 17:32Speaker 3: watch the film. He made a ton of tackles at
- 17:34Speaker 3: around the line of scrimmage and he was active, So
- 17:37Speaker 3: you know, I think he's gonna get home more on
- 17:39Speaker 3: some sack opportunities as this year it goes on. But
- 17:41Speaker 3: it was really good to see Bobby back because he's
- 17:43Speaker 3: a twelve year VET. But I have no idea if I.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Was watching him on Sunday, Yeah, man, was it was
- 17:49Speaker 7: nice to hear the roar when they introduced Bobby. Everyone
- 17:52Speaker 7: gets some love when you run out the tunnel to
- 17:54Speaker 7: do the introductions, but when fifty four his name was called,
- 17:57Speaker 7: it was different. It felt different. Good to see him, yeah, man.
- 18:00Speaker 7: Another guy that I did not expect to see with
- 18:01Speaker 7: Jordan brooks Man. He had tours ACL late in the season.
- 18:05Speaker 7: He has surgery this year, and I'm going out to
- 18:08Speaker 7: training camp. I'm seeing him running around and doing his thing,
- 18:11Speaker 7: him and Jamal rehab and I go, wo, we'll see
- 18:13Speaker 7: him in like maybe November or something like that.
- 18:15Speaker 8: Nah.
- 18:15Speaker 7: A few weeks before the season starts. Pete Carroll let
- 18:18Speaker 7: us us know that he's off the Peoples, off the
- 18:19Speaker 7: pup list, and he might be available. Even then, I'm thinking,
- 18:22Speaker 7: no way, he's gonna play week one. He did play
- 18:25Speaker 7: Week one. He had twelve tackles. I mean, that's probably
- 18:28Speaker 7: one of the greatest recoveries I've seen other than Adrian
- 18:31Speaker 7: Peterson back in the day.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and the fact that you watched him, you have again,
- 18:36Speaker 3: you'd have no idea if you said he's coming off
- 18:38Speaker 3: of a serious injury, You'd be like, where was it?
- 18:40Speaker 3: What need with shoulder, with toe, with ankle? No, Jordan Brooks,
- 18:43Speaker 3: And he looked fast, he was running around, he's running hitting,
- 18:45Speaker 3: looked like to Jordan Brooks of old. And he got
- 18:47Speaker 3: those twelve tackles even on kind of a little bit
- 18:49Speaker 3: of pitch count because he was he took some plays
- 18:51Speaker 3: off when it was either Nickel or that Devin Bush
- 18:55Speaker 3: got a couple reps. So we'd love to see Jordan Brooks.
- 18:57Speaker 3: He's only going to ramp up and keep this thing going.
- 18:59Speaker 3: So excited for him in there, bump. We'll get into
- 19:02Speaker 3: the receiver roundup. Not a lot, not a lot to
- 19:05Speaker 3: kind of go through here. You know, as a team,
- 19:07Speaker 3: there's only sixteen receptions. Metcalf led all receivers three for
- 19:11Speaker 3: forty seven and a touchdown, Disley two receptions, Smith and
- 19:14Speaker 3: Jigbu three receptions, only thirteen yards. And yeah, to have
- 19:18Speaker 3: no one over fifties is a tough day. Sixteen receptions
- 19:22Speaker 3: one hundred and twelve yards and one touchdown for the unit.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Yeah, it was a tough day, man. No one had
- 19:27Speaker 7: more than five targets. That's DK and Kenneth Walker. We
- 19:30Speaker 7: did get to see Jackson Smith and Jig, but he
- 19:32Speaker 7: had a big reception. I believe that was a third down,
- 19:35Speaker 7: one of the few third downs that the Hawks did convert.
- 19:38Speaker 7: It was a long of ten, but overall, nothing really
- 19:41Speaker 7: impressive here. You can only go up from here. That's
- 19:44Speaker 7: why I'm excited. I really just want to get to
- 19:45Speaker 7: next week. I understand what this podcast is, nas. We
- 19:47Speaker 7: gotta do it. We gotta recap this thing. But when
- 19:50Speaker 7: you look at the performances and the numbers, you're thinking, Okay,
- 19:53Speaker 7: we won't see another week like this, But we're not
- 19:55Speaker 7: done here.
- 19:55Speaker 8: What we got next?
- 19:56Speaker 5: Man?
- 19:56Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, I can't wait. Next time we look
- 19:58Speaker 3: this box work bump, we're gonna see multiple one hundred
- 20:01Speaker 3: yard receivers. I promise you that, promise you that. But
- 20:04Speaker 3: we'll take a tight, a nice little local dive inside
- 20:06Speaker 3: the film room. Look at one of the one of
- 20:08Speaker 3: the good plays on offense. This was when Gino Smith
- 20:10Speaker 3: found DK metcalf for a ten yard touchdown.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Twelfth play on the drive, second down and nine, Sharbone
- 20:16Speaker 2: stays in the back of here comes to blitz.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Gino has time throws.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It over the top the cap touchdown.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Shay Hawks.
- 20:25Speaker 1: The Rams blitz.
- 20:27Speaker 4: They go to Amanda man on DK Metcalf. Not a chance, baby,
- 20:31Speaker 4: Gino Smith walks it up over the top from ten
- 20:35Speaker 4: yards out. Metcalf has now tied Darryl Turner for sixth
- 20:39Speaker 4: place on the Seahawks all time receiving touchdowns list with
- 20:43Speaker 4: thirty six.
- 20:44Speaker 3: And they made it look easy. Bump break this down. Man,
- 20:48Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 20:49Speaker 8: Man, you're on the ten yard line, the nine yard line.
- 20:51Speaker 7: It's second in nine and what we see as we
- 20:53Speaker 7: see two high safeties and the the DBS are showing
- 20:56Speaker 7: you man covers. You're you're thinking if I'm Gino, I'm
- 20:59Speaker 7: thinking priest now. Oh yeah, I'm about to give DK
- 21:01Speaker 7: a shot. He's one on one on the outside. You
- 21:03Speaker 7: got Jackson Smith and Jig but inside and then the
- 21:06Speaker 7: Rams send a blitz. I got two guys going, so
- 21:09Speaker 7: they're sending six. You have five offensive linemen. You got
- 21:13Speaker 7: one running back to block. I think Zach Sharpman does
- 21:15Speaker 7: a great job picking of the blitz given Gino just
- 21:17Speaker 7: enough time. So now let's talk about DK and his release.
- 21:20Speaker 7: We call this a tempoverlease. He jumps off the line
- 21:23Speaker 7: of scrimmage, attacks the space in between him and the
- 21:26Speaker 7: defender and does a little walk towards him a little
- 21:29Speaker 7: bit and then shakes him at the top, shows him
- 21:31Speaker 7: an inside move gets the dB to buy Gino. All
- 21:33Speaker 7: he has to do is get to his back foot
- 21:34Speaker 7: and put it in a spot and the rest is there.
- 21:36Speaker 7: It was probably the easiest touchdown of DK's career.
- 21:39Speaker 8: How many is that thirty six?
- 21:41Speaker 7: Yeah, that was the easiest one of his career, all
- 21:43Speaker 7: because of what he did at the line of scrimmage
- 21:45Speaker 7: and Geno doing a great job of understanding what they're
- 21:48Speaker 7: in and taking a shot with his guy.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Do you remember when the conversation was about whether DK
- 21:52Speaker 3: could run routes? Yes, this is that kind of laughable
- 21:55Speaker 3: now thinking about that. I mean, for a long time,
- 21:58Speaker 3: everyone's like, well, why don't know, he just fask run
- 22:00Speaker 3: from a defensive back perspective right here? You know the call,
- 22:03Speaker 3: so you know they're bringing pressure and you're just really
- 22:06Speaker 3: hoping if you're that DV man, we better get home,
- 22:09Speaker 3: right because that's a lot of space to be on
- 22:11Speaker 3: an island alone. You know, he tries. If you watch him,
- 22:14Speaker 3: he looks like he's inside leverage right to start, and
- 22:16Speaker 3: he kind of looks like he's trying to protect outside.
- 22:18Speaker 3: And then because of that, Dk gives him a little bit.
- 22:21Speaker 3: He knows bringing pressure. It's on the goal line, so
- 22:23Speaker 3: he you know, goes right downhill, drives on the what
- 22:26Speaker 3: he thinks is a slant in the second he takes
- 22:28Speaker 3: one step. We call that the oh bleep reed as
- 22:31Speaker 3: defensive backs because you know right there, once that foot
- 22:33Speaker 3: goes in the wrong place, you're just hoping Gino is
- 22:36Speaker 3: gonna get hit or the ball gets thrown in the stands.
- 22:38Speaker 3: But Murphy's law usually when you're that guy that gets
- 22:41Speaker 3: beat like that, that the ball's gonna find you. That's
- 22:43Speaker 3: just that's life. You're not gonna get lucky. So cool
- 22:47Speaker 3: to see Dk Metcalf showing nakend runnroutes obviously we've known
- 22:50Speaker 3: that for a minute, but just cooking a Rams defender
- 22:52Speaker 3: and hopefully we get to see more of that as
- 22:54Speaker 3: the season goes on. But like we said, the Seahawks
- 22:58Speaker 3: didn't go their way, losing to the Rams and the
- 23:00Speaker 3: clock ran out.
- 23:04Speaker 5: On me.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Taken by Unley. They're just gonna let the clock wind down.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Pet's not even gonna bother taking that last time out.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Oh it was a tail two halfs. Seahawks did not
- 23:15Speaker 3: punt in the first half, but punted every possession in
- 23:17Speaker 3: the second half. Rams scored in every drive of the
- 23:19Speaker 3: second half.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Bump.
- 23:20Speaker 3: That's pretty much all you need to know how things
- 23:22Speaker 3: went and how this game went from a Seahawk thirteen
- 23:24Speaker 3: to seven lead to a thirty to thirteen loss.
- 23:27Speaker 8: Yep, they dominated the time of possession and they.
- 23:30Speaker 7: Did all of this without Cooper cup Man, this one
- 23:33Speaker 7: touchdown from the Seahawks all day, the third down was
- 23:36Speaker 7: a problem man. At one point in one drive, the
- 23:39Speaker 7: Rams went five for five on third downs. End of
- 23:41Speaker 7: the day eleven to seventeen. The Hawks were two for
- 23:44Speaker 7: nine on third downs. Whenever you see that, you can
- 23:46Speaker 7: just assume that the offense wasn't moving the ball down
- 23:48Speaker 7: the field.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Yeah, man, it's a it's a day that you want
- 23:52Speaker 3: to forget, man. And I think after today, Today's tell
- 23:54Speaker 3: the Truth Monday here at Virginia Mason Athletic Center. The coaches,
- 23:57Speaker 3: the players, everyone's reviewing the film, looking at it. But
- 23:59Speaker 3: it's over once the meetings over today, Bump, they're turning
- 24:02Speaker 3: the page. We're not gonna look about any of the
- 24:04Speaker 3: bad stuff. The one good thing, though, another good thing.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Like I told you, we've been telling you reasons to
- 24:08Speaker 3: be optimistic today. Another one is the run defense, allowing
- 24:11Speaker 3: just ninety two yards on forty carries. Okay, and here's
- 24:15Speaker 3: the thing I've heard from some people throughout the day,
- 24:18Speaker 3: even your co host Bump talking about, you know, still
- 24:22Speaker 3: not sure about that run defense. And that's true. It's
- 24:25Speaker 3: one game. Just like as bad as the Seahawks look,
- 24:27Speaker 3: we can't take everything from one game. What I will say, though,
- 24:30Speaker 3: is anytime any team in the National Football League runs
- 24:32Speaker 3: the ball forty times and you only give up ninety
- 24:34Speaker 3: two yards, that's a good day because at some point,
- 24:38Speaker 3: if you that volume of carries, you're gonna get some yards.
- 24:41Speaker 3: And yes, did they get a couple one yard touchdowns, Yes,
- 24:44Speaker 3: did they get a couple of third and shorts. Okay,
- 24:46Speaker 3: that doesn't take away from this fact that the Seahawks
- 24:48Speaker 3: were making tackles that the line of scrimmage one two,
- 24:50Speaker 3: three yards. So that's another good sign. I hopefull they
- 24:54Speaker 3: can build on this going in next week. Bump, but
- 24:56Speaker 3: uh man, I'm just excited. You know, this is as
- 24:58Speaker 3: far as we're concerned. We're done talking about it. It's
- 25:01Speaker 3: over right done. I'm ready for it. What I real quick?
- 25:05Speaker 3: As we close out? What are you looking forward to
- 25:07Speaker 3: this week? A man, I'm looking forward to Tuesday. I'm
- 25:11Speaker 3: looking forward to prepping forward the Detroit Lions. I'm looking
- 25:14Speaker 3: forward to seeing the adjustments that this staff is going
- 25:17Speaker 3: to make.
- 25:18Speaker 7: Lots of veteran veterans on this staff. There's no way
- 25:21Speaker 7: the Hawk's going to come out and have the same
- 25:23Speaker 7: performance that they had against the Rams. So hey, turn
- 25:26Speaker 7: the page, just a rap. Okay, digest it and blush
- 25:30Speaker 7: it and let's go.
- 25:31Speaker 3: You heard the man. Remember you, guys, We'll be with
