- 1:01dive into the CrossFit news.
- 1:05I always like to see this.
- 1:06Kenneth DeLapp with the
- 1:07original Sunday Night CrossFit talk.
- 1:10That's us.
- 1:12We got Jody.
- 1:13We got Andrew.
- 1:14We got Julian.
- 1:15And people are coming in fast and furious.
- 1:17Awesome.
- 1:18Good to see you guys tonight.
- 1:20So I'm going to start off
- 1:21with tonight is the
- 1:23fiftieth anniversary show
- 1:24of Saturday Night Live.
- 1:26And I am much older than the two of you.
- 1:29And I was five years old
- 1:31when Saturday Night Live hit the air.
- 1:32Wow.
- 1:34So, yeah, I am much older than you guys.
- 1:37But it has been a fabric of my life.
- 1:41Like my whole entire life.
- 1:43And it peaked when I was a
- 1:45bouncer at a bar.
- 1:46We used to videotape on VHS
- 1:49Saturday Night Live while
- 1:50we were on our shift.
- 1:52And when we were done with our shift,
- 1:54everybody would come back
- 1:55to my apartment and we
- 1:56would watch Saturday Night
- 1:58Live together and like have
- 2:00a couple beers to unwind so
- 2:01we could sleep.
- 2:03And it just became a thing
- 2:05that we did every week.
- 2:07And I've always been a fan,
- 2:08always watched it.
- 2:10And I was watching the red
- 2:11carpet before I came down to do this.
- 2:14And I just was smiling ear to ear,
- 2:17giddy with all the memories
- 2:19of Cernet Live.
- 2:22It was yesterday, wasn't it?
- 2:23Because I saw a bunch of
- 2:24highlight videos of it.
- 2:26So they had a concert.
- 2:28Okay, that's what I saw.
- 2:29I saw the performances of the concert.
- 2:32Right.
- 2:32Like highlights of it.
- 2:34Tonight is the actual show.
- 2:38So they do Saturday Night
- 2:39Live on Sunday night?
- 2:40Well, it's only this week.
- 2:43Okay.
- 2:44to commemorate it,
- 2:44and it's a big special on NBC,
- 2:46and it's a three-hour show
- 2:49instead of an hour and a half,
- 2:51but everybody has come back,
- 2:52like Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal,
- 2:56Martin Short, Will Ferrell.
- 3:01Last night,
- 3:01they actually ran the first
- 3:02ever show from the show.
- 3:04It's the first.
- 3:06It's also the NBA All-Star game today, too,
- 3:11right now.
- 3:12So interesting that they
- 3:14would put it on the same as a, I mean,
- 3:16the all-star games are not
- 3:18what they used to be,
- 3:19except if you are into the hockey world,
- 3:22that was amazing.
- 3:23The,
- 3:23the four nations competition
- 3:25tournament is amazing, but yeah,
- 3:28the all-star basketball stuff is tonight.
- 3:33Well, I'm not a huge basketball fan,
- 3:34so you'll lose me there.
- 3:37I used to be a big dunk contest fan.
- 3:39But again, I'm older than you guys.
- 3:41I grew up in the Jordan, Dominique,
- 3:44Spud Webb era.
- 3:45And it really fell off for a
- 3:47long time from that.
- 3:49And so they lost me for that.
- 3:51The one guy was impossible.
- 3:55Miss Canada.
- 3:58Sorry, I didn't hear that.
- 4:00The four nations hockey event last night.
- 4:03I did watch that miss Canada.
- 4:05Yeah, that was, uh,
- 4:07that was the start of it was crazy.
- 4:09It was.
- 4:10Three fights in nine seconds.
- 4:11Yeah, it was just setting the tone.
- 4:14I mean,
- 4:14we haven't had best on best for the
- 4:18men's hockey in almost like ten years,
- 4:20just because of what the
- 4:21NHL will allow players to participate in,
- 4:24stuff like that.
- 4:25And even at the Olympics,
- 4:26you don't even always get
- 4:27your top people that will want to compete,
- 4:29because...
- 4:30A lot of them like that,
- 4:31like male athletes, like the Olympics,
- 4:33if they're playing professional sports,
- 4:35just isn't as meaningful.
- 4:37Like as like the female athletes were like,
- 4:38that is their top moment in their sport.
- 4:42And yeah,
- 4:43to see the best on best action is
- 4:45like so brilliant,
- 4:46like so much better than
- 4:49the all-star games that
- 4:50they had prior where like,
- 4:51you just don't try as much.
- 4:53Like there were some big
- 4:54hits and clearly some
- 4:56hatred and some fighting going on and
- 4:58uh yeah I think it was it's
- 5:01been a great move to do
- 5:03this ken walters said my
- 5:06son's old college line mate
- 5:07is on usa jake ketzel who
- 5:10actually was drafted by the
- 5:11pittsburgh penguins and on
- 5:13one of their cup teams um
- 5:15stanley cup winning teams
- 5:16uh he's awesome but it I
- 5:20will tell you it was some
- 5:22of the most entertaining
- 5:22hockey I've seen in a long time
- 5:27We'll be,
- 5:28we'll get our river and us just
- 5:31so if people are not watching USA,
- 5:33punch their ticket to the
- 5:34championship game,
- 5:36Canada can make it back to that.
- 5:39But they USA beat Canada
- 5:40last night leading up into,
- 5:43and that got USA the bid to
- 5:45the championship game.
- 5:47Now Canada can still get there,
- 5:50which I do because it's,
- 5:52it's going to be the best game.
- 5:54Yeah.
- 5:56They have to beat Finland next,
- 5:58and then they'll be in the
- 6:00finals if they can beat Finland.
- 6:03Yeah, our top defense is out.
- 6:05Our team played okay.
- 6:06I thought they were a little flat,
- 6:08but the hockey is just fast, though.
- 6:11They're finishing their checks.
- 6:12It's physical, and they're trying to win.
- 6:16It's not just a fun game.
- 6:18It's meaningful to all the teams.
- 6:20It's cool to watch.
- 6:23I wish the basketball did the same thing.
- 6:25I wish that all of these
- 6:26games tonight and you have
- 6:28the OGs versus the rising
- 6:29stars and the team world
- 6:31and stuff like that.
- 6:32I wish that they would take
- 6:33it seriously and throw down.
- 6:37They play harder in their
- 6:38summer league pickup games
- 6:40than they do at this all-star game.
- 6:42It's so annoying because fans,
- 6:43they want to see the best
- 6:44on best and just go.
- 6:47Team versus the world would
- 6:49be an awesome NBA match.
- 6:52It's just the worst seeing
- 6:53professional athletes not even try.
- 6:55It's just a lack of respect for the game.
- 6:59And for the people that are
- 7:00paying to watch.
- 7:03Just do your best.
- 7:04Who cares if you lose?
- 7:06At least you tried.
- 7:09Well, back to SNL.
- 7:12Any favorite characters?
- 7:14Any favorite cast members?
- 7:17Any favorite sketches?
- 7:18Yes.
- 7:20I didn't watch a whole lot of SNL.
- 7:22I'd probably say like Chris Farley,
- 7:24maybe Will Ferrell.
- 7:26I mean,
- 7:26I've always been a Will Ferrell fan.
- 7:30That shows our age difference.
- 7:34Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:36I just always watch like the
- 7:37highlights of like certain
- 7:39skits that might go on to
- 7:41Instagram or something.
- 7:42But I can't say that I like
- 7:43actually sit down and watch
- 7:44Saturday Night Live at any
- 7:46point really like as a show.
- 7:49Just highlights of stuff.
- 7:51And it's always comical.
- 7:53Like it's the monologues,
- 7:55all that stuff and what
- 7:57they do and things they make fun of.
- 7:59It's great.
- 8:00Yeah.
- 8:02So my my favorite cast
- 8:04member ever is Eddie Murphy.
- 8:06And that's like that's old school.
- 8:07That's before you guys were
- 8:08probably even born when he was coming up.
- 8:12He was he hit ninety percent of the time.
- 8:17He was like a baseball
- 8:18player hit nine hundred
- 8:20every time he was on screen.
- 8:21It was hilarious.
- 8:23With Gumby, Buckwheat, James Brown,
- 8:27Celebrity Hot Tub, all those things.
- 8:29He just was always on fire.
- 8:33And then my wife and I, or just me,
- 8:37three times for Halloween
- 8:38were SNL characters.
- 8:40That's funny.
- 8:42so I went as Matt Foley the
- 8:43motivational speaker Chris
- 8:45Farley's character uh one
- 8:46year for Halloween uh her
- 8:49and I went as Hans and
- 8:50Franz um the bodybuilders
- 8:54that idolized um Arnold
- 8:57Schwarzenegger and um we
- 9:04one year we went as the duo
- 9:06that sang uh blanket a box
- 9:12the Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg,
- 9:14nineties.
- 9:15Uh,
- 9:17and my wife actually put a beard on and,
- 9:20um,
- 9:21did the whole bit with the suit and
- 9:24she had a, in a box.
- 9:27And we actually had them.
- 9:28If you open the box, you saw a piece.
- 9:31I like pantyhose stuffed in there.
- 9:36Um, but that was, uh,
- 9:39To me, anytime Justin Timberlake hosts,
- 9:42I watch because he's so good on there.
- 9:46Yeah, he does a good job.
- 9:49And then one of the amazing
- 9:50facts that I learned is
- 9:51Alec Baldwin has hosted the
- 9:53show seventeen times.
- 9:55Wow.
- 9:57Which is amazing.
- 10:00But so many of our pop
- 10:02culture icons have come
- 10:03from Saturday Night Live,
- 10:04like Adam Sandler and Chris Farley and
- 10:06Billy Crystal and Chevy
- 10:09chase and Bill Murray.
- 10:10And I mean, they just go on and on and on.
- 10:14Um, crazy.
- 10:18Uh, yeah,
- 10:19it was all pre Beverly Hills cop.
- 10:22I think it was during the
- 10:23filming of the first forty
- 10:24eight hours is when he was on SNL.
- 10:28Uh, Phil Hartman was amazing.
- 10:31Uh,
- 10:32Regrettably, he's no longer with us,
- 10:35but he was like one of
- 10:37those glue characters who
- 10:38could play any man and do everything,
- 10:41like him and Daryl Hammond.
- 10:44Kristen Wiig is great at that.
- 10:46Cecily Tyson.
- 10:50What else do we got here?
- 10:52Beastie Boys had a great performance.
- 10:55Dana Carvey, gosh, she's another one.
- 10:57Church Lady, Hans and Franz.
- 11:01So yeah, Buckwheat was fire.
- 11:05So much fun.
- 11:05But that will be my day tomorrow.
- 11:07I will watch the rebroadcast
- 11:09on Peacock tomorrow and
- 11:11catch up on everything and
- 11:13probably talk about it on
- 11:14one of the lunch shows this week.
- 11:17But I just wanted to bring
- 11:18it up because we don't have
- 11:19a ton of CrossFit news this
- 11:20week and we had a little bit of time.
- 11:24I should have put in the
- 11:26Four Nations tournament
- 11:27because I knew that would
- 11:29be a good conversation with Carolyn.
- 11:32It'll be better conversation
- 11:34next week if we win.
- 11:38So it'll get brought up either way.
- 11:41If we win, I'll bring it up.
- 11:42If you win, you'll bring it up.
- 11:43Yep.
- 11:46Do you guys have any fun
- 11:47Valentine's plans?
- 11:49We didn't do anything.
- 11:52Did you?
- 11:53We went to a local
- 11:55restaurant with friends for
- 11:56half-priced appetizers.
- 11:58Ooh.
- 12:00but we only had like forty
- 12:02five minutes because they
- 12:03had eighty five reservations.
- 12:05So the only way they would
- 12:06allow us to sit is if we
- 12:07promised we would leave in
- 12:08forty five minutes.
- 12:09Holy smokes.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:16I worked out and then Lex
- 12:18ordered me some local
- 12:21burrito place for me to
- 12:23pick up on the way home
- 12:24because she's in California.
- 12:25So that's a way to my heart right there.
- 12:29You know,
- 12:29Some food, good food after a workout.
- 12:31That's all I needed.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:33We just got pizza.
- 12:35We didn't want to deal with
- 12:36trying to go to a
- 12:36restaurant and do anything.
- 12:39So basic.
- 12:41Did I, did I take you to rusty bucket?
- 12:44Yes.
- 12:45So that's, that's where we went.
- 12:46Yeah.
- 12:47Yeah.
- 12:47The place is good.
- 12:49Yeah.
- 12:49They have from four to six
- 12:51now every weekday,
- 12:52all their appetizers are half price.
- 12:54That's awesome.
- 12:55And they have chicken wings
- 12:57and they have salads.
- 12:58And so you can get chicken
- 13:00wings and a salad for half price.
- 13:02It's a pretty good deal.
- 13:03Heck yeah.
- 13:05I'd be in heaven.
- 13:06And then I got Julie an
- 13:08order from chocolates.com.
- 13:09How's she doing?
- 13:13She's doing great.
- 13:15She's actually not using the
- 13:16cane at times now.
- 13:18For short little jaunts across the house.
- 13:23But she still feels unstable long times,
- 13:26long periods on it.
- 13:26But she's itching to get back to work.
- 13:30She's hoping to be cleared soon.
- 13:32Like her and I being
- 13:33together twenty four seven.
- 13:36We both are ready for a little alone time.
- 13:40Are you able to get in like
- 13:42go to the gym or do a workout?
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45So I actually paused my
- 13:47membership at Polaris until
- 13:49I got over the AFib and got
- 13:51her through everything she
- 13:52needs to get through.
- 13:53But when I pause,
- 13:54I still have access to all
- 13:55of their programming.
- 13:57So I'm doing,
- 13:58I'm pretty much just doing
- 13:59body weight stuff in my basement.
- 14:01They love,
- 14:01they have like a body weight
- 14:02track that you can follow.
- 14:04Yeah, and if not,
- 14:05I just convert it to
- 14:07something that I can do.
- 14:09And then as it warms up,
- 14:10I'll go back out to the garage.
- 14:12And then it opens back up
- 14:13April first to full membership again.
- 14:19Cool.
- 14:21But that'll give me enough
- 14:22time to be on this new
- 14:23medicine and my heart rate
- 14:25for three months.
- 14:26And then I can regulate it
- 14:28better doing body weight stuff too.
- 14:33So...
- 14:38I know that it's meat and
- 14:39veggies and some fruit, seeds, nuts,
- 14:42no sugar,
- 14:43but it's Valentine's Day and my
- 14:46wife spent it through the
- 14:47rehab and she's been killing the rehab.
- 14:50She's been losing weight through the rehab,
- 14:52which has been awesome.
- 14:55If she wants a couple
- 14:56chocolate-covered pretzels,
- 14:57which is what I got her, she's okay.
- 14:58Aaron got me crumble cookies.
- 15:03I was like,
- 15:03you're just trying to sabotage me.
- 15:04I
- 15:08Can you eat a whole crumble cookie?
- 15:10Oh, no.
- 15:11I eat like an eighth of it.
- 15:14They last me a week.
- 15:16They're so rich and so big.
- 15:19They are.
- 15:22Jodi Lynn says EMOMs are the way.
- 15:25Yeah.
- 15:25I love EMOMs.
- 15:27Polaris,
- 15:28most of their stuff is interval work.
- 15:30So it allows me to like do short sets,
- 15:33check my heart rate, short set,
- 15:35check my heart rate.
- 15:38And they're usually like
- 15:38four minutes on three
- 15:39minutes or four minutes on
- 15:41two minutes off stuff like that.
- 15:44Um, so yeah, we do a lot of those too.
- 15:50Um,
- 15:51so we'll get into some CrossFit stuff
- 15:52last week.
- 15:53We talked about, uh,
- 15:55the new CrossFit podcast
- 15:57that launched last week and
- 16:00the first episode dropped,
- 16:01I believe on Tuesday morning.
- 16:05Um, and I watched it.
- 16:06It had, it was Nicole Carroll.
- 16:09And it was really, really good.
- 16:11But it is a clear departure
- 16:15from the sport and more
- 16:18about the methodology at this point.
- 16:21Anyway, there's only one episode,
- 16:22but we looked at the trailer.
- 16:25The trailer seems much more
- 16:26in the affiliates, not so much the sport.
- 16:30But in it,
- 16:31Nicole Carroll talks about that
- 16:33CrossFit has lost their way.
- 16:36And that they need to work
- 16:39to get back to what's most important.
- 16:46And through that,
- 16:48she no longer is the head
- 16:50of the education department.
- 16:52She is now the head of the brand.
- 16:57Well, what's most important?
- 16:58Does she say that?
- 17:01So all of this media that
- 17:02has been coming out are
- 17:04things that she has
- 17:05developed to promote the brand.
- 17:09Okay.
- 17:10And then when Jenna came on
- 17:12as the new media leader, marketing,
- 17:18chief marketing officer.
- 17:19Yeah.
- 17:21Then she's been helping her
- 17:23push it all out.
- 17:24Okay.
- 17:24Yeah.
- 17:25So the reason you've seen
- 17:27all the change on the,
- 17:28on the YouTube channel and
- 17:30like the trainers YouTube channel and, um,
- 17:34this new podcast and the
- 17:36different advertisements
- 17:37for the open different ad, you know,
- 17:40different advertisers for L one,
- 17:43that's all the stuff that
- 17:44she's been working on.
- 17:46And now Jenna is helping her
- 17:47get it all out.
- 17:51Um,
- 17:53which I,
- 17:53which I found fascinating because
- 17:55she was the head of
- 17:56education for the entirety
- 17:59of CrossFit almost.
- 18:03I guess I'd just be curious
- 18:04what Nicole's I haven't watched it,
- 18:06obviously.
- 18:06Um,
- 18:07what she feels is the way and what
- 18:11we're missing.
- 18:12Like, is it, is it media?
- 18:14Is it just the methodology in general?
- 18:18I mean,
- 18:20longevity and like I
- 18:22understand they're probably
- 18:23pushing away from the sport
- 18:25side but in some aspects a
- 18:29lot of people say the sport
- 18:30side is what grew crossfit
- 18:32so I don't know like if you
- 18:34really want to separate
- 18:35that I don't think it it I
- 18:39don't think it's it it's
- 18:42she's not picking a side
- 18:43between sport and
- 18:44methodology I think what
- 18:46she's talking about is
- 18:47their message got lost
- 18:50And it's okay to say they're
- 18:52the best option available
- 18:56and to tout that they are
- 18:57the best option available and, um,
- 19:02not be afraid to talk about it,
- 19:04talk about it a lot,
- 19:05get the message out there a lot.
- 19:07It's,
- 19:08it's not about picking between sport
- 19:10and methodology.
- 19:11It's about the messaging
- 19:13coming out from them.
- 19:16Does that make sense?
- 19:20Yeah,
- 19:22I mean... Does brand mean like the
- 19:24image of CrossFit?
- 19:25Is that what that means, basically?
- 19:27Like working on changing the
- 19:29image of what people see of CrossFit?
- 19:35I don't even think she can
- 19:36define what brand means.
- 19:38And she kind of talks about
- 19:39that at the beginning of the podcast.
- 19:42I think it's more about...
- 19:46She feels like the name of
- 19:47CrossFit has been battered
- 19:48and bruised over the last five years.
- 19:52And we need to be more
- 19:53proactive to show the world
- 19:57that this stuff really does work.
- 20:01I agree.
- 20:01I mean.
- 20:03We and they.
- 20:04Yes.
- 20:05When I say we,
- 20:06I'm talking like it came from her.
- 20:08Yeah.
- 20:08Yeah.
- 20:15What I applaud is she's not only saying it,
- 20:17there are actions that you
- 20:19can see that she has done
- 20:21where it's not just her talking about it,
- 20:24but she's actually taking
- 20:25some kind of action.
- 20:26Yeah.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:28I mean, you can tell,
- 20:29you can tell that there's
- 20:31been more thoughtful, thoughtful,
- 20:36they put they have been
- 20:37putting work into that
- 20:39trainer channel the like
- 20:42it's definitely media is
- 20:43coming out back to the
- 20:44documentary the little mini
- 20:46documentaries yeah
- 20:50And I think those are,
- 20:51those are the things though,
- 20:52like the killing the fat man,
- 20:53those type of things showing, I mean,
- 20:56you do, you need to push the,
- 20:57we have the cure for the
- 20:58world's most vexing problem
- 20:59and you need to push that.
- 21:00It doesn't need to be sport so much,
- 21:02but media does need to
- 21:03surround that to show the potential,
- 21:07but we do need to just go
- 21:08back to health side.
- 21:10And we, this is the best,
- 21:14the best thing you can do for your life.
- 21:16if you haven't seen the
- 21:17documentary they put out
- 21:19about the judge that worked
- 21:21the masters CrossFit games
- 21:23and that they talk about
- 21:24that he was a member of a
- 21:26gym and they all wanted to
- 21:28volunteer and they're at a
- 21:29dinner and they go around
- 21:31the table and no,
- 21:33none of them lost less than like,
- 21:39like that says it all.
- 21:42And those are the things
- 21:44they weren't putting out anymore.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:53Larry Young says this, I love Nicole,
- 21:56but I think some young
- 21:58people might resonate with newer people.
- 22:00Where Nicole resonates with
- 22:01the OG CrossFitters,
- 22:03they are eventually going
- 22:04to age out just food for thought.
- 22:06I agree.
- 22:07I agree with your sentiment, Larry,
- 22:10but Nicole is not a forward
- 22:12facing person.
- 22:14Very rarely does she do
- 22:15podcasts or things.
- 22:18She is showing this through other media.
- 22:23She's working behind the
- 22:24scenes to push this stuff out.
- 22:29I, I love Nicole.
- 22:31Um,
- 22:32And was I really enjoyed
- 22:35when she was more forward
- 22:37facing when she used to do
- 22:38the open workouts and give
- 22:40her opinion on how it worked,
- 22:43how it went and like strategy.
- 22:45I ate those up.
- 22:48Like.
- 22:49I miss the update shows and
- 22:51stuff like that that used
- 22:53to be also in the open.
- 22:54They do the recaps of the
- 22:56weeks and who's leading and
- 22:59go into the communities and
- 23:00talk about what affiliates,
- 23:02how it was for them.
- 23:05I think bringing back
- 23:05something like that would
- 23:06be important too.
- 23:09Not just talk about the top
- 23:11people in the sport,
- 23:11but just showcasing how
- 23:13different affiliates are
- 23:15taking on the workouts and
- 23:17stuff like that.
- 23:19but yeah,
- 23:19she always gave like good
- 23:20feedback after the workout,
- 23:21like for elite athletes and
- 23:24then more general, general Paul.
- 23:29Yeah.
- 23:30I,
- 23:31one of the highlights of my life is at
- 23:34the twenty twenty two
- 23:36CrossFit games on the final
- 23:38day I was in the media pit
- 23:41and Nicole was on one side
- 23:42of me and Chris, um, oh God, uh,
- 23:48endurance guy,
- 23:49Chris and hearing the two of
- 23:52them talk to each other was
- 23:54just fascinating.
- 23:57And I was in between the two
- 23:58of them and it was, it was awesome.
- 24:02And I know Henshaw has taken
- 24:03some blows this year,
- 24:04but like the guy's still pretty,
- 24:06really pretty smart.
- 24:08And, um, and Nicole is way smart.
- 24:12So it's one of my favorite, like,
- 24:18I don't,
- 24:19an athlete personality is just in
- 24:20general of CrossFit.
- 24:23The only,
- 24:24the only thing she ever asked me
- 24:25was how do you pronounce fuselage?
- 24:27Yeah.
- 24:31And you knew, but I think during the open,
- 24:34you got to focus on the community.
- 24:37Like that's, that's what it's about.
- 24:38It's the community event.
- 24:40It's like at my gym, like there's,
- 24:43we're doing like three teams of,
- 24:45they all have their
- 24:46t-shirts and you get points
- 24:49if you judge someone.
- 24:51So now all of a sudden you don't have,
- 24:52you don't have people
- 24:53running around for judges
- 24:54because everyone wants to
- 24:54judge because it gets
- 24:55points for their team.
- 24:56And we've got this big trophy and it's,
- 24:59it's just like a fun
- 25:00community thing that you do yearly.
- 25:04And like,
- 25:04I think the competitive part and like,
- 25:08it goes a little bit with
- 25:09what Clooney says,
- 25:10like the competitive part is,
- 25:12is hard because I think the
- 25:14sport has developed so much
- 25:16since the years of two
- 25:17thousand where it's like
- 25:18for a regular pot, like, but back then,
- 25:21like people could see the games athlete.
- 25:23And like a lot of people
- 25:24thought they could get there, you know,
- 25:26a lot more people thought
- 25:27they could get there than now.
- 25:28Now it's become so
- 25:30professionalized where it's
- 25:31basically out of reach for
- 25:32most people that start
- 25:34CrossFit that a lot of people are like,
- 25:36what's the point and all
- 25:37that of the sport?
- 25:38Because it just, it's so far out of reach.
- 25:40So professionalized it's well,
- 25:41not professionalized, but, um,
- 25:44in terms of the level you
- 25:46need to get there.
- 25:47So it's just like,
- 25:48let's make the open about
- 25:49the community and the
- 25:51affiliates and just having a good time,
- 25:54um,
- 25:55signing up and doing the workouts
- 25:56together.
- 25:57You know, like you don't have to sign up,
- 26:00I guess, but it's like, to me,
- 26:01signing up makes it that
- 26:04your intensity just goes up.
- 26:06Like it just naturally does.
- 26:08Um, but just like doing it with people,
- 26:10doing it like for people, um,
- 26:13celebrating
- 26:15you know, three hard weeks together,
- 26:18I think is some of the more
- 26:19memorable stuff, um,
- 26:22from any CrossFit affiliates.
- 26:24Like it's, it's the open,
- 26:25like it's your celebration every year.
- 26:28It's your reset.
- 26:28Like you,
- 26:29you do your workouts and then you,
- 26:30you talk about it.
- 26:32You celebrate different achievements,
- 26:34people's first, whatever.
- 26:36For a lot of times,
- 26:36it's the first time you see
- 26:37people from different
- 26:38classes working out at the same time,
- 26:40because like everyone's
- 26:41doing the Friday night
- 26:42lights or we do Saturday
- 26:43mornings for my gym.
- 26:45But I get to see people I
- 26:46don't normally see during
- 26:47the day and I get to see
- 26:49their first of whatever and
- 26:51them achieving something
- 26:52that they didn't think was possible.
- 26:54Like, I think those moments are so cool.
- 26:56And like,
- 26:58they don't happen without the Open.
- 26:59It's just, it's, it's tough.
- 27:03Like, it's, yeah, but it's...
- 27:06I think it's got to come
- 27:07back to the community.
- 27:08It's got to be showcasing
- 27:10all those little stories of
- 27:11different affiliates and
- 27:14what they're doing and how
- 27:15they're taking on the open
- 27:16and just different ideas
- 27:19that people have that can
- 27:20share with other gyms too.
- 27:23It's funny because this is
- 27:24our first year without
- 27:25Christy and Patrick owning our gym.
- 27:28And they have completely changed the open.
- 27:32And to be honest,
- 27:34love Chrissy and Patrick to death,
- 27:36but the open was a serious
- 27:37matter for them, right?
- 27:39We had games athletes.
- 27:41We had semifinal athletes.
- 27:42We had Masters athletes.
- 27:45they wanted to make sure
- 27:46that they had like the
- 27:47optimal place to to be able
- 27:48to do their workouts and
- 27:50now this year it is all
- 27:53they are doing an
- 27:53intramural team competition
- 27:56it's more community-based
- 27:58um they are doing a friday
- 27:59night lights which we
- 28:00didn't have before and
- 28:02they're doing a saturday morning um so
- 28:08it's really cool seeing how
- 28:09they are changing the way
- 28:11they're doing the open now
- 28:13that the big time games
- 28:14athlete is no longer the
- 28:15owner um and and truly love
- 28:21christian patrick as owners
- 28:22and as coaches and some of
- 28:24the best coaching I've ever
- 28:25had in my life but that one
- 28:28thing that community aspect
- 28:31of the open got lost a
- 28:32little bit there that
- 28:34surprises me a little bit I would think
- 28:37I would think that would you
- 28:38would want to still like
- 28:41it's almost more important
- 28:42to do the Friday Night
- 28:42Lights and like highlight that.
- 28:45I think both can happen.
- 28:46I think it just depends on the affiliate.
- 28:47I think both can happen.
- 28:48Like, like I said, at my gym, we,
- 28:50we have people of all
- 28:52levels that are taking part in it.
- 28:54And that's, that's the beauty part of it.
- 28:58It's an interview role,
- 28:59basically competition at our gym, right?
- 29:00It's you have points for participation,
- 29:02get points for judging and
- 29:03get points for if you're
- 29:04wearing your outfit that weekend,
- 29:06like it's just, it's just fun.
- 29:08Like,
- 29:08and then like there's prizes and get
- 29:12togethers.
- 29:12Like it's,
- 29:14And I think part of it was
- 29:14COVID because we,
- 29:16we sectioned our gym off
- 29:17into where everybody had
- 29:18their own individual lane and you came in,
- 29:21you put your stuff in your lane,
- 29:22you had a bike, you had a rower,
- 29:25you had a pull up bar and
- 29:26everything's there.
- 29:27You don't have to like run
- 29:28around the gym to pick it up.
- 29:29And it actually took away
- 29:31from the community aspect a little bit.
- 29:33The new owners have gotten
- 29:35rid of the lanes.
- 29:38And so now it's, it's more open, but it's,
- 29:41Here's some of our listeners.
- 29:45One, Larry Young agrees with Carolyn.
- 29:47The athletes evolve faster than the rest.
- 29:50It's just not attainable
- 29:51anymore for a lot of people.
- 29:53It really isn't.
- 29:55To make it to the CrossFit Games, I mean,
- 29:58there's very few that can
- 29:59do it with full-time jobs.
- 30:00You still see it, of course.
- 30:03But it is so hard to do.
- 30:08I also think it's a function
- 30:09of getting rid of the
- 30:11regionals because that was
- 30:14a goal for a lot of people.
- 30:15And that was a little bit more attainable.
- 30:18That was.
- 30:19And for the teams, it was more,
- 30:20it was achievable, right?
- 30:21Like now with all the super
- 30:23teams and then you have to
- 30:25qualify for all these different events,
- 30:26like there's a lot less of them.
- 30:28So the caliber is higher, of course,
- 30:30but the amount of regional,
- 30:31especially when there was like, like,
- 30:34you're going,
- 30:35you're just traveling a few
- 30:36hours to go to the,
- 30:37to the regional event that's nearby.
- 30:39And it's literally,
- 30:41you're like an affiliate team.
- 30:45Yeah.
- 30:45So that,
- 30:45that part's what's been difficult.
- 30:48I think for those
- 30:49intermediate athletes that
- 30:50are like intermediate RX,
- 30:52like have a goal of kind of
- 30:54making it to some sort of next level.
- 30:56Yeah.
- 30:58It's just a little bit out of reach now.
- 31:01I think if they did open
- 31:02announcements with box
- 31:03athletes and not games athletes,
- 31:05it would promote it better
- 31:07for general CrossFitters.
- 31:09An open announcement where
- 31:10they do it at an affiliate
- 31:12and they have both are my
- 31:14favorite announcements.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:17It's like throwing a regular
- 31:20person in a lane at the games.
- 31:21I think that would be incredible.
- 31:23Yeah,
- 31:24I think showcasing what a top score
- 31:26is and then let's take it
- 31:28back to reality with what...
- 31:31what the general athletes
- 31:33are going to look like too.
- 31:34Right.
- 31:35And I think you attract the
- 31:37top athletes will want to
- 31:39watch because they want to
- 31:40see their competitors and kind of,
- 31:42you know, what a good score is.
- 31:43And then the regular population gets a,
- 31:47another version that they
- 31:48can look at and aspire to,
- 31:51to be as good as them too.
- 31:53Judy Reed says we're having
- 31:54raffles with really cool giveaways,
- 31:56meat boxes, weight belts, supplements,
- 31:59food every week.
- 32:02Dang.
- 32:02Ken says we have shirts each
- 32:03year for participants and
- 32:05then potluck after each
- 32:06Friday night lights for all
- 32:08members and their families.
- 32:11And then I think a ton more
- 32:13people have regionals,
- 32:15had regionals as goals and
- 32:16the whole gym was in on it.
- 32:17I think that's the key.
- 32:19And it was when you had regionals,
- 32:21they were small and you
- 32:22could drive to any location
- 32:24in your region.
- 32:25Yep.
- 32:28like CrossFit lost a lot of
- 32:29money running all of those
- 32:31but I some sort of regional
- 32:35thing would would be a
- 32:37solution I think agreed
- 32:43just how to do it I don't
- 32:44know because you have to do
- 32:46it cheaply but
- 32:49It was the most effective way to get fans.
- 32:54John Woolley said this a long time ago.
- 32:56Maybe we need to look at
- 32:57high school football fields.
- 33:01You can get cheaper than a
- 33:03convention center.
- 33:06That way you go to a
- 33:07regionals where the cost is less.
- 33:09Everybody can come.
- 33:10You do have the weather aspect,
- 33:12but at least it's a community event.
- 33:14I don't know.
- 33:23yeah yeah I I'm excited for
- 33:27the open I I think this I
- 33:31I've talked about it we
- 33:32we're a level method gym I
- 33:33feel like this community
- 33:34cup and them and I know
- 33:35they've done the levels
- 33:36before but I actually feel
- 33:37like they are putting it in
- 33:39the right direction and
- 33:40have a purpose for it and
- 33:42I'm excited for it like I'm
- 33:43telling everyone at my gym
- 33:45sign up like you know how
- 33:46you're white or yellow like
- 33:48you might be one or two and you
- 33:50you actually will like
- 33:51objectively be able to look
- 33:52at that and try to go from
- 33:53a two to a three next year.
- 33:55And we're going to do the in-house,
- 33:57the community cup as an in-house comp.
- 33:58So like, if you have a level,
- 34:00it'll make sense.
- 34:02Yeah,
- 34:03I like the idea of the Community Cup.
- 34:05I hope that it works because, like,
- 34:11the idea of it is good.
- 34:12It's like you finish your Open,
- 34:13people are motivated or
- 34:16defeated a little bit by where they are,
- 34:18and then it's like you've
- 34:19got this amount of months to train and,
- 34:22you know,
- 34:22go back to basically your level
- 34:24of competing against –
- 34:26your people and try to
- 34:28improve within those months
- 34:29and then after that you set
- 34:31goals for the next year of
- 34:32the open like instead of
- 34:33waiting a full year to um
- 34:36to work on different things
- 34:37like let's see short term
- 34:39if you can dial in a few
- 34:41things like I like the idea
- 34:43um hopefully it's well
- 34:47programmed to the different
- 34:49levels I really wonder if
- 34:52Like,
- 34:53do you think that the open would work
- 34:54better if they had an
- 34:55intermediate workout?
- 34:56Like, RX intermediate scale?
- 34:59Like, almost every gym has those three,
- 35:03like, levels.
- 35:03Like,
- 35:04sometimes I wonder if they had an
- 35:08intermediate workout,
- 35:10if it would allow more people to...
- 35:15hopefully that's I don't
- 35:16know the levels become
- 35:18right because the workout
- 35:19is going to be different
- 35:20for every level group at
- 35:22the community cup right so
- 35:24maybe that's the start of
- 35:25something in that direction
- 35:30we'll have to wait and see
- 35:31but um there was something
- 35:33here because then you could
- 35:34have a little bit more rx
- 35:35workouts and then you have
- 35:37those intermediate workouts
- 35:38and then scaled and foundation
- 35:40Like it's, it'd be,
- 35:42I think it would be more appropriate,
- 35:44especially as people sign
- 35:45up like pretty new,
- 35:47like you have certain skills.
- 35:49I don't know.
- 35:50I think I get really
- 35:51conflicted there because when I started,
- 35:52there was only RX and try
- 35:59to be able to do things
- 36:00that I'd never done before,
- 36:02which actually forced me to
- 36:04get things I'd never had before.
- 36:08I agree with that too.
- 36:09So like I'm really
- 36:10conflicted in adding more
- 36:12to that when that was what
- 36:15got me my first pull up.
- 36:17That's what like I had to
- 36:18get a twenty four inch box
- 36:20jump before it got to the
- 36:21open because I was going to
- 36:22have to do it.
- 36:24Like though it actually made
- 36:26me work towards something
- 36:28and achieve it so that I
- 36:30could do it in the open.
- 36:32but I think you can still
- 36:33try to work towards getting
- 36:34out of intermediate and
- 36:36getting towards RX, um,
- 36:38while still getting a
- 36:39better workout in like
- 36:43intermediate division.
- 36:44Like I think it's something
- 36:45that I think it's an idea
- 36:46to play around with.
- 36:48Um,
- 36:49Again,
- 36:49I'm not sure whether it would work
- 36:51or not because the first
- 36:52year they added RX and
- 36:54scaled was twenty fifteen
- 36:55because my first year in
- 36:56the open was twenty
- 36:56fourteen and they didn't have it there.
- 36:59But then in twenty fifteen,
- 37:00they introduced handstand pushups.
- 37:01And I remember there was I
- 37:03think there was like scale
- 37:04divisions at that point.
- 37:05I think that was the first year.
- 37:10Nicole says,
- 37:10I feel like I'd fall into intermediate,
- 37:13which is frustrating,
- 37:14but most of the scaled
- 37:15movements would be too easy for me.
- 37:17Nicole is one of my members and she,
- 37:20she would be, she's a high intermediate.
- 37:23If the problem is she
- 37:24doesn't have quite have a
- 37:25bar muscle up yet, but she, but I think,
- 37:29I think that could be a track.
- 37:31Like,
- 37:31I think that would attract certain
- 37:32athletes though, that, that are very,
- 37:35very fit,
- 37:36but they just lack the high end strength,
- 37:38technical work for gymnastics.
- 37:40And then like race and that
- 37:43kind of caliber, like the workouts.
- 37:46Yeah.
- 37:46Oh, she'd crush.
- 37:48I think there's a lot of
- 37:50athletes that fall into that division.
- 37:53Like that's,
- 37:53that's most of your members at
- 37:55the gym is intermediate.
- 37:59Jody Lynn asks this.
- 38:00What is a level method, Jen?
- 38:02I've talked about it kind of a lot, Jody.
- 38:05So it's literally,
- 38:07it's a big map on a wall
- 38:09and it goes from white to black,
- 38:11essentially like a white
- 38:12belt to a black belt.
- 38:14And you literally,
- 38:15assess over fifteen
- 38:17different movements there's
- 38:18things like deadlift front
- 38:19squat things like upper
- 38:21body pull upper body push
- 38:24um and so you get a wide
- 38:26range cardio stuff there's
- 38:28things like api which is
- 38:29basically fight gone bad um
- 38:32and you get a color for
- 38:34those movements and then
- 38:36you see like like say for
- 38:38instance like we have a guy
- 38:39who can deadlift five six
- 38:41hundred pounds but can't do
- 38:42really do a pull-up
- 38:43So he's, like, black in his deadlift,
- 38:46his objective strength.
- 38:47Like, he can move a lot of weight.
- 38:49Can't move his own body weight very well.
- 38:52So you want to, like,
- 38:53bring those together and
- 38:54fall somewhere in, like,
- 38:56an orange or a blue,
- 38:57more in the middle of the map.
- 38:58And usually it's a body composition thing.
- 39:01Could be a cardio thing.
- 39:04It just makes you a very
- 39:05well-rounded athlete.
- 39:08That would be an interesting
- 39:08thing for CrossFit to do.
- 39:11Like for different movements
- 39:12or different benchmark workouts.
- 39:15Especially because the
- 39:15workouts change all the time in the open.
- 39:18It would be super
- 39:20interesting to be like this.
- 39:21I mean,
- 39:21Beyond the Whiteboard does it in levels.
- 39:23Yeah.
- 39:24yeah like you're in the
- 39:25ninety-ninth percentile
- 39:26ninetieth percentile but
- 39:27just kind of releasing
- 39:29these are the benchmark I
- 39:31mean we have so many
- 39:32benchmark workouts right
- 39:33but like picking maybe a
- 39:35like a few cardio a few
- 39:36gymnastics a few weight
- 39:38lifting and then a few uh
- 39:39mixed modal like just kind
- 39:41of general tests yep I
- 39:45think that would be
- 39:46interesting to to do and
- 39:50then it creates your levels yeah
- 39:54Because the open in three workouts or even,
- 39:57let's call it four workouts
- 39:58if there's a two-parter,
- 39:59I still think that's very
- 40:00hard to level out.
- 40:03Yeah.
- 40:03Because you could have had
- 40:07one high skill movement
- 40:08that took you away from a certain level,
- 40:09but you have everything else,
- 40:10and it's just not as precise.
- 40:16I think you need more data.
- 40:21Yeah.
- 40:21Yeah, I mean, it usually skews to –
- 40:24I would say more just basic
- 40:27cardio fitness ability.
- 40:29But I think that's,
- 40:30that's the bottom of the pyramid, right?
- 40:31If you think about, you know, CrossFit,
- 40:33like you have the bottom of
- 40:34the pyramid being monostructural, right?
- 40:36And before earning your weight,
- 40:38like you have to be good at
- 40:40monostructural and just general fitness.
- 40:41Then are you able to move
- 40:43your body in space with gymnastics?
- 40:45Then how, you know,
- 40:47the weights and
- 40:48weightlifting and throwing and the sport.
- 40:50So yeah,
- 40:54yeah it's interesting well
- 40:57while we're talking about
- 40:57the open um let's talk
- 40:59about they announced the
- 41:01second matchup um that will
- 41:03happen somewhere in arizona
- 41:05and I'll go ahead and share my screen so
- 41:21And Rolf is off first.
- 41:23Emily Rolf is going to take
- 41:24a red light stand.
- 41:42So, thoughts on the matchup?
- 41:46I'm excited for Emily.
- 41:49I mean,
- 41:49the fact that Sydney got to do it
- 41:51last year,
- 41:51I almost wish they would have
- 41:53found somebody else.
- 41:56I like her.
- 42:00Very few people have gotten to do it.
- 42:01Find somebody who hasn't done it yet.
- 42:06yeah I was excited for emily
- 42:08to see that I'd like what
- 42:10kind of movements would you
- 42:11like to see them paired
- 42:12against each other I would
- 42:13like to see I mean
- 42:14obviously emily's very good
- 42:16at like toaster bars some
- 42:18double unders uh sydney
- 42:20would be very good in terms
- 42:22of similar movements I
- 42:24think too yeah um she's good with the
- 42:30lower skill gymnastics, chest to bar,
- 42:34bar muscle-up, stuff like that.
- 42:36It could be a good race.
- 42:39I could see like a...
- 42:42I don't know.
- 42:42Was it eighteen two or the
- 42:44one with the total bar dub
- 42:46and the front that cleans?
- 42:49Yeah,
- 42:49I don't think that would be as good
- 42:51for Emily Rolfe against Sydney.
- 42:54Well,
- 42:55I think I think what would be good
- 42:56would be the twenty minute
- 42:57twenty point two with the
- 43:00dumbbell thrusters, the toaster bars.
- 43:03Yeah, but that takes.
- 43:04So I think what.
- 43:05So I think Emily would get
- 43:07ahead and then it would get
- 43:09to that last level of weight and then
- 43:13I'd be curious to see.
- 43:15Does Sydney come back and take her?
- 43:18And that's, I mean,
- 43:19that's... Emily's getting stronger.
- 43:22She is.
- 43:23Some of her lifts, as of late,
- 43:25I feel like they're... She
- 43:28has been putting in the work on strength.
- 43:29It's just the field is just so strong.
- 43:31I know.
- 43:32It's just she's getting stronger,
- 43:34but so is the field, right?
- 43:36So it always looks like she's...
- 43:38very weak but she's she's
- 43:40not like she's still very
- 43:42strong like she's um like
- 43:45just everyone's just
- 43:46apparently cleaning two
- 43:47fifty now like it's just
- 43:49crazy uh craig makes a good
- 43:52point we don't want to see
- 43:53ring muscle ups yeah
- 43:54probably not that would be
- 43:56over before it got started
- 43:58I still think week one
- 44:01could very well be the
- 44:03twenty point five workout
- 44:07think it'd be I think it's
- 44:09twenty point one I think
- 44:10it's the ten rounder with
- 44:12the ground overhead and
- 44:13burpees uh craig says total
- 44:18bar devil press rower
- 44:20you'll never see devil
- 44:21pressing that express we
- 44:22haven't seen that you won't
- 44:24see it I don't I mean I
- 44:26guess I think a single arm
- 44:27devil's press you could see
- 44:29but not with the double I
- 44:30think the fifty and thirty
- 44:31five would get heavy for
- 44:32the majority of people but
- 44:34a single arm you could do
- 44:37it's just like a dumbbell
- 44:38snatch with the burpee
- 44:38basically yeah um ken
- 44:43walters says twenty five
- 44:44point three open
- 44:45announcement jamie versus
- 44:46carolyn carolyn wouldn't go
- 44:48live I would do it I would
- 44:52get on I'd see taylor's
- 44:53going on live I would do a
- 44:54workout after the announcement
- 44:57I mean,
- 44:57I used to always do that at my gym.
- 44:59They would announce it.
- 45:00We would have a group of people.
- 45:02I would do it the Thursday night.
- 45:03Cause it back then it used
- 45:04to be released at eight PM.
- 45:06I would do it that night by
- 45:07myself basically.
- 45:09And then I would do a little
- 45:10recap of how I feel like
- 45:13people should do it.
- 45:14Like I'd watch the
- 45:14announcement and watch the athlete do it.
- 45:16And then I would do it and
- 45:17then give a little bit of feedback on it.
- 45:20If you knew that it didn't
- 45:21have to be the score you posted,
- 45:23would you do it?
- 45:24Like, cause you could do it again.
- 45:26Sure.
- 45:29I don't know that I'm going
- 45:30to want to do any of them.
- 45:31I did an announcement
- 45:32against Caroline Risencibo one year,
- 45:34twenty point two,
- 45:36the freaking double under one.
- 45:37I was like she and she got like a top,
- 45:40I think top five in the
- 45:41world on that workout, too.
- 45:42Like she was so good at those movements.
- 45:44And I'm like,
- 45:44there are so many workouts
- 45:45where me and Caroline
- 45:46Risencibo would battle and
- 45:48it'd be like burpees and
- 45:49deadlift workouts and light barbells.
- 45:52And then, of course,
- 45:53like the announcement was
- 45:54like the worst workout for me.
- 45:55I was like, oh,
- 45:56this is going to be embarrassing.
- 45:58So what, so let's talk about that because,
- 46:02you know, it's,
- 46:02it's a big honor to be
- 46:04asked to do an open workout announcement,
- 46:06right?
- 46:08You're in front of the world.
- 46:09Everybody's watching.
- 46:11Um,
- 46:11you get that opportunity and then your
- 46:14biggest weakness shows up as one of the,
- 46:16as a piece of the workout.
- 46:18What were your feelings in that moment?
- 46:20Deflated.
- 46:21Cause they're like thrusters.
- 46:23I was like, all right,
- 46:24I got this toast bar.
- 46:24I was like, okay.
- 46:27double unders I was like oh
- 46:31it's like crap um it just I
- 46:34mean like I it was cool to
- 46:36go up against her like I
- 46:38knew what like I was gonna
- 46:39be in for a tough night but
- 46:42um like I just knew it
- 46:44wasn't gonna be my best
- 46:47event but I did my best and
- 46:49I think I did better than I
- 46:51would have if I was by
- 46:52myself just because of the
- 46:53push I got from her because
- 46:54she was so elite at that workout
- 46:57But yeah, it was a tough one.
- 46:59But yeah, I mean,
- 47:00a twenty minute workout
- 47:02like that's when you want
- 47:03to have someone with you
- 47:04that's that's pushing you,
- 47:05because if you're just
- 47:06doing that one by yourself,
- 47:07like that's tough.
- 47:08Like that's one of the harder ones,
- 47:10just mentally like a twenty minute AMRAP.
- 47:12Those are the worst.
- 47:14Franco,
- 47:15she asks herself that question
- 47:17every night before bed.
- 47:19I'm getting better.
- 47:21I have been working with this lady, Molly.
- 47:26So she's been helping me with some drills.
- 47:30I have a different skipping
- 47:31rope this year than I have before.
- 47:35And am I perfect?
- 47:38Absolutely not.
- 47:39But am I better than I was last year?
- 47:42Yes.
- 47:44So I'm hoping I can
- 47:47continue this momentum of my
- 47:49double unders and also
- 47:51being a part of it is big
- 47:52for your camp and or
- 47:53affiliate yes uh take
- 48:02dancing class storking your
- 48:03queen if you have not seen carolyn
- 48:07do her Taekwondo or do her jumping.
- 48:12She is one of the most
- 48:13athletic people you've ever seen.
- 48:14And so coordinated that has
- 48:16nothing to do with her.
- 48:17That's the frustrating part
- 48:19is I can dance and I am coordinated.
- 48:22I just cannot do double unders.
- 48:26Um,
- 48:27yeah for whatever reason my
- 48:31arms are not leveled and
- 48:35the connection of my arm is
- 48:36just not there but it's
- 48:39getting better so we've
- 48:42talked about all the good
- 48:43things about the open and
- 48:45the amazingness of it all
- 48:47but we're now getting posts
- 48:49from bigger athletes saying
- 48:52that they are not doing the
- 48:53open this year and that um
- 48:57We knew that Emma Tall, Emma McQuaid,
- 49:01and Elisa Fuliano had
- 49:03announced it in previous weeks.
- 49:06And now we get this week Chandler Smith,
- 49:09Patrick Vellner, and Yela Hosta.
- 49:13So now we're at three and
- 49:14three on each side.
- 49:15I keep scrolling Instagram.
- 49:17It's really hard to find in
- 49:19everybody that I follow
- 49:21these announcements,
- 49:22but I'm trying to look as
- 49:24much as I can to bring you
- 49:26the latest news on that.
- 49:32That's a decision they're allowed to make,
- 49:34right?
- 49:34Anybody can or cannot do the open.
- 49:38It is what it is.
- 49:41How do you think it's going
- 49:42to affect the competitive season?
- 49:46Is it going to do because
- 49:48they've reduced the number
- 49:49of people going to the games by ten?
- 49:52Does it will it actually
- 49:53give some up and comers a shot?
- 49:57Or is it do you think it's
- 50:00going to be a wash because
- 50:02of the reduction in people
- 50:03going to the games?
- 50:04Yeah, I feel like it's going to be a wash.
- 50:10Carolyn.
- 50:11Say that question again.
- 50:14So because they've reduced
- 50:15the number of people going
- 50:16to the games by ten.
- 50:17Yes.
- 50:17From forty to thirty.
- 50:20Now you have open spots
- 50:21coming because perennial
- 50:23games athletes are not competing.
- 50:27Is it going to be a wash in
- 50:28the end that those
- 50:30perennial games athletes
- 50:31will probably be about the
- 50:33same as the number of spots
- 50:36they've reduced by?
- 50:39It's hard.
- 50:40It's hard to know.
- 50:41I think there's a lot, um,
- 50:43still contemplating right
- 50:45now and still waiting it
- 50:46out to kind of just see
- 50:48what other people are doing.
- 50:52It's hard to know because a
- 50:53lot of those athletes do
- 50:55hold great influence, um,
- 50:58in the space and yeah,
- 51:01I mean the decrease in number,
- 51:03it's already getting harder to qualify,
- 51:06but
- 51:09I'm, I don't,
- 51:10I don't know what the signup
- 51:10is going to be like.
- 51:11It's, it's going to be much lower than,
- 51:14than the past few years, probably by,
- 51:17I don't know that we'll hit
- 51:18two hundred thousand at this pace.
- 51:20Like,
- 51:21I think it's going to be pretty
- 51:23significant blow.
- 51:25And like I've said, every,
- 51:28every other show, like these athletes,
- 51:30like they're,
- 51:31I think that there's two
- 51:32ways that athletes have taken, you know,
- 51:36their decision is some athletes are,
- 51:39uh you know the changes that
- 51:41crossfit has proposed post
- 51:43games um has not met what
- 51:47they're looking for in
- 51:48terms of the changes and
- 51:50the way that they're taking
- 51:51action is by not competing
- 51:54um which I fully support
- 51:56their and respect their decision
- 51:59Um, and they want to see more and they,
- 52:01you know, and really it's, it's too,
- 52:04it's too close to even know
- 52:05whether it's enough.
- 52:06We don't know whether it's enough.
- 52:08And some athletes I think
- 52:10are choosing not to compete
- 52:13until they see it actually change because,
- 52:17you know, we've had councils,
- 52:18we've had all these things
- 52:19and they're not taking part until, um,
- 52:23or maybe never, I'm not sure,
- 52:26until they see significant
- 52:28change or what they're looking for.
- 52:30And then other athletes are choosing to,
- 52:35you know, take part, let's say,
- 52:37in the Open or in the
- 52:38season and seeing how these
- 52:42actions are going to be,
- 52:44or these decisions and
- 52:45changes are going to be implemented,
- 52:47hoping that...
- 52:49things change.
- 52:50I think anyone that, you know,
- 52:53saw what happened last year,
- 52:55know that it was, you know,
- 52:58the worst thing that can
- 52:59happen and definitely preventable.
- 53:04And the response,
- 53:06I think for even for people
- 53:07that are choosing to,
- 53:08to sign up for the open,
- 53:10it doesn't mean that you're
- 53:13in agreement with the,
- 53:15the response either that happened or,
- 53:18or anything that took place.
- 53:19I think that there's just
- 53:20different ways that
- 53:21athletes will choose to
- 53:24move forward with the season,
- 53:25whether they want to be
- 53:27within the community and
- 53:31see how it plays out or they want to hold,
- 53:34you know,
- 53:35their decision of not competing
- 53:38until further change, um, is made.
- 53:41Um,
- 53:41and there could be other personal
- 53:43reasons that they don't
- 53:43disclose to which they had
- 53:45every right to not disclose
- 53:46for their decisions to not compete.
- 53:48Um, I respect, uh,
- 53:51I respect their decisions too.
- 53:53Um, you know, like I said to me,
- 53:59the open has meant so much to my community,
- 54:03to my affiliate, to myself.
- 54:06I've tried to win the open
- 54:06every single year, if I'm being honest,
- 54:08since I was in twenty fourteen.
- 54:11Like athletes, games,
- 54:12athletes always says that
- 54:13they don't care about the open.
- 54:14I always did.
- 54:15Like I always cared.
- 54:16I cared about my community.
- 54:17I have an affiliate like it
- 54:20just it's it's meant so much to me.
- 54:22And
- 54:23There's other people that
- 54:24have disagreements with me
- 54:26in terms of their decisions,
- 54:28but it's tough.
- 54:34I don't know what – I think
- 54:38we all want change.
- 54:39We all want this to never,
- 54:40ever happen again.
- 54:42ever happen again, you know?
- 54:44And it's so sad that we lost, you know,
- 54:48one of our best members of
- 54:49our community in Lazar and
- 54:52it should have never happened.
- 54:53And it's just, it's just, it's difficult.
- 54:56Like it's difficult to move on from that.
- 54:58And no one is really moving on from that.
- 55:00You know,
- 55:00we're moving forward or in
- 55:01different directions, but you know, no,
- 55:04no one's going to forget
- 55:05what happened with Lazar.
- 55:07I just hope that real change happens.
- 55:12Real significant change is
- 55:14going to happen with the
- 55:17new council in place,
- 55:19with the new safety measures in place.
- 55:23You know,
- 55:23I've competed in a lot of competitions,
- 55:25a lot of competitions
- 55:28locally and nationally.
- 55:30know the games in my like
- 55:32from my experiences one of
- 55:34the places I felt the
- 55:35safest in terms of where I
- 55:37competed like there was the
- 55:39most amount of staff there
- 55:41now my expectation is
- 55:43always to have someone save
- 55:45me if I were to ever be in
- 55:46a situation like that and
- 55:47that just didn't happen
- 55:49And it's so sad to think
- 55:53that that happened and shocking.
- 55:56It's still shocking to talk
- 55:57about it and enraging, to be honest.
- 56:01But like I said,
- 56:02I just hope that something
- 56:05can come from this.
- 56:07There's plenty of
- 56:07opportunities to compete in the season.
- 56:10I'm going to be doing the
- 56:11WFP as well and trying to compete there.
- 56:13And I support all the athletes that...
- 56:17are going that route too.
- 56:20Like this,
- 56:20the sport has meant so much to me.
- 56:22It's changed my life.
- 56:23It's changed so many things,
- 56:24like not just the sport, the methodology.
- 56:27Like, I just,
- 56:29I don't want to see it go away.
- 56:30I don't want to see it disappear.
- 56:33I don't want to see, you know,
- 56:35the affiliates that mean the most to me,
- 56:37like lose a bunch of like things.
- 56:42I don't know.
- 56:42It's just,
- 56:44It's tough.
- 56:45It's a tough time in our sport right now,
- 56:47in our community.
- 56:48It's very divided.
- 56:54I just don't think that...
- 56:57When you're asking for change,
- 57:00I don't – for one,
- 57:02I think you need to be a
- 57:03little bit clearer,
- 57:03but the fact that some of
- 57:06these athletes are backing
- 57:07out of the games and
- 57:08switching over to something like WFP,
- 57:11like no shame, no fault there,
- 57:13like whatever, do what you want to do.
- 57:15I just –
- 57:17you, to me, it seems like you're,
- 57:20you're just wanting to go
- 57:22do the least amount of work
- 57:24for the most amount of money.
- 57:26Like why, why now are we pushing for,
- 57:29you're pushing for movement lists,
- 57:32you're pushing,
- 57:32you basically want to know
- 57:34what you need to do and you
- 57:35want to go do it.
- 57:36You just want to do six
- 57:37events over two days and make some money.
- 57:40we no longer really want to
- 57:42test for the fittest on earth.
- 57:43We don't want to do like extremely hard,
- 57:46unknowable things.
- 57:47I mean, there is inherent danger when you,
- 57:49when you go sign up for
- 57:50something like the CrossFit games,
- 57:51that's part of what draws people to it.
- 57:53That's part of what made
- 57:55CrossFit great is life
- 57:59isn't easy and it's,
- 58:01we are choosing to put
- 58:03ourselves in extremely
- 58:04taxing situations in the gym every day,
- 58:07just really hard things so
- 58:10that we can get through other things.
- 58:12And I don't,
- 58:13I don't know why we're
- 58:14constantly trying to like
- 58:15catered for people,
- 58:16like make things easier,
- 58:17scale things to like, that's, that is not,
- 58:22that's not how life works.
- 58:23That's not,
- 58:24that's not what made this great.
- 58:27I'm okay with the standardized list,
- 58:31and it's still, to me,
- 58:32unknowable in terms of – I mean,
- 58:35if you look at that list, there's – Sure,
- 58:37there's tons of options.
- 58:38There's tons of options,
- 58:40and I'm sure we'll talk about that later.
- 58:43I don't think there's
- 58:44anything bad necessarily
- 58:46with that list and wanting –
- 58:49standardized stuff.
- 58:49And I don't think that we also need,
- 58:52I don't think that the
- 58:53games needs to be as hard
- 58:54on the body as like a beat
- 58:57down sometimes as, as it is.
- 58:58I think you could,
- 58:59you could do those same
- 59:00events over maybe one more
- 59:01day or whatever,
- 59:02but I wouldn't say that
- 59:03they're taking an easier route there.
- 59:05They're actually competing more often.
- 59:06I think it's,
- 59:08they have their contracts, uh,
- 59:10those athletes, but three times, I mean,
- 59:13you, I mean,
- 59:14really they could just go one
- 59:16time in person for, you got it.
- 59:18It's not even that much different.
- 59:20Like you do the open,
- 59:21then you do your semifinals
- 59:23and then you do the games.
- 59:25So now we're going to do the in-person,
- 59:27the two, the three live WFP.
- 59:30If you're a contracted athlete,
- 59:32they're not really competing more.
- 59:37I think it's pretty similar, maybe.
- 59:40I mean, if they're doing both,
- 59:40they're competing more.
- 59:42Well, sure.
- 59:43But the volume at a
- 59:45competition with six events is less,
- 59:49obviously, than some of the games with,
- 59:52you know,
- 59:52fifteen events in three to four days.
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:59I get it.
- 59:59I just feel like they're
- 1:00:01going the route that serves them the best,
- 1:00:03and I can't fault them for that.
- 1:00:06I,
- 1:00:06but I like at telling that Dave needs to
- 1:00:09be fired,
- 1:00:09saying that we need all this
- 1:00:10change without saying like,
- 1:00:12just say what it is that you want.
- 1:00:14And we aren't getting that
- 1:00:15other than it's pretty clear.
- 1:00:16They want a day fired.
- 1:00:19Did you want pool swims?
- 1:00:21I don't know.
- 1:00:21Did you want everything inside?
- 1:00:23I don't know.
- 1:00:23Nobody's been straight up
- 1:00:25clear about exactly what
- 1:00:27they're looking for.
- 1:00:29Yeah.
- 1:00:30I think some of it was in, in the demands,
- 1:00:32obviously by the PFA.
- 1:00:34Um, I think the Dave thing is,
- 1:00:37is definitely something that the athletes,
- 1:00:40some of them, um, are,
- 1:00:44we're looking in terms of
- 1:00:45action or at least someone
- 1:00:47held accountable for, you know,
- 1:00:50the life loss, um,
- 1:00:54And again,
- 1:00:54there's some reasons that won't be said.
- 1:00:59And there's athletes that
- 1:01:01are stepping away that
- 1:01:03they've been in it for a long time.
- 1:01:05I think it's very easy for
- 1:01:06people that are judging
- 1:01:08that have never been at the Games to...
- 1:01:12to judge and it's like
- 1:01:13they've been there they've
- 1:01:15experienced certain things
- 1:01:16maybe that you know even if
- 1:01:18I've been at the games like
- 1:01:19I don't have the same
- 1:01:20experience as some of those
- 1:01:21athletes that have been
- 1:01:21there much longer and and
- 1:01:24how they like how they felt
- 1:01:25I just have my personal
- 1:01:26experience to to draw back
- 1:01:28on um but yeah I think it's
- 1:01:36It's whatever that they feel
- 1:01:39is best for them in terms
- 1:01:43of what they're looking for.
- 1:01:44That could vary,
- 1:01:45but I do think that someone
- 1:01:47being held accountable or a
- 1:01:49few different things could
- 1:01:50be one of the reasons.
- 1:01:57Does it help that they have
- 1:01:58a contract and they already
- 1:01:59have another opportunity elsewhere?
- 1:02:04Let's be honest.
- 1:02:04Yes.
- 1:02:06Um, I think, you know,
- 1:02:08if you look at certain
- 1:02:09athletes that don't have
- 1:02:10those contracts and their bubble athletes,
- 1:02:13like, I think it's a harder to,
- 1:02:16I'm not going to say harder
- 1:02:16cause I don't want to put any judgment.
- 1:02:21But I think having other
- 1:02:23opportunities already set
- 1:02:25in stone in terms of a
- 1:02:26contract and a season is
- 1:02:30helpful maybe for certain
- 1:02:31decisions by certain
- 1:02:33athletes versus if you have
- 1:02:34nothing or less sponsors.
- 1:02:42So I'm going to jump in.
- 1:02:45Because I know there are
- 1:02:46things that with you as
- 1:02:49athletes probably can't
- 1:02:51cross the line and I can.
- 1:02:53And so I'm going to say it.
- 1:02:56One thing that it's a lot
- 1:02:57easier for athletes who
- 1:02:59have been there nine years
- 1:03:00to the games to say, Hey,
- 1:03:02I'm not doing it because
- 1:03:04they've already had the experience.
- 1:03:07There are so many athletes
- 1:03:08fighting for that opportunity.
- 1:03:11And now these bigger names
- 1:03:12in the sports are almost
- 1:03:14becoming an influence.
- 1:03:18And I hope that they're able
- 1:03:21to separate from that and
- 1:03:24make their own decision
- 1:03:25based on the own facts and
- 1:03:27needs that they have and
- 1:03:29their own experiences.
- 1:03:31Does that make sense?
- 1:03:36Pat Vellner has podiumed.
- 1:03:38He's been to the game several times.
- 1:03:40He's made a lot of money in this sport.
- 1:03:42He's done a lot of things.
- 1:03:45But there's a lot of
- 1:03:46athletes that haven't had
- 1:03:47that experience yet.
- 1:03:49And I don't want that taken away if,
- 1:03:53and this is a big if,
- 1:03:56if CrossFit is moving in
- 1:03:58the right direction.
- 1:04:01Which I hope it is.
- 1:04:02Like, you know, I hope that
- 1:04:09I don't know how to say this,
- 1:04:10but someone didn't lose a
- 1:04:13life for nothing.
- 1:04:15And this doesn't forever
- 1:04:18change the safety measures.
- 1:04:21And that is the only life that we'll ever,
- 1:04:25ever lose.
- 1:04:26And like I said,
- 1:04:27it should have never happened.
- 1:04:29It didn't.
- 1:04:30will never be forgotten,
- 1:04:32but I sure hope that if that,
- 1:04:35if that didn't open the
- 1:04:37eyes of the games team and
- 1:04:39I've worked on the demo team with like,
- 1:04:42I have worked behind scenes as well.
- 1:04:44And I know, like I've seen, you know,
- 1:04:46some of the people behind
- 1:04:47scenes and I've done with
- 1:04:48rogue and stuff like they
- 1:04:50care about the athletes and
- 1:04:51they do care about the
- 1:04:52competition and putting on, you know,
- 1:04:54a safe show and, and stuff.
- 1:04:56And we saw the worst thing ever happen.
- 1:05:00Um,
- 1:05:01And I just hope that it wasn't,
- 1:05:04it's not ever going to happen again.
- 1:05:07And real, you know,
- 1:05:10more thought is going to be
- 1:05:11put into place in terms of, uh,
- 1:05:14safety procedures.
- 1:05:15Like even if you have like, you know,
- 1:05:16rope climbs, like mats underneath,
- 1:05:18and I'm not an expert in safety.
- 1:05:20Like that's not my, that's not my.
- 1:05:24As an athlete,
- 1:05:26I can't foresee every single
- 1:05:28thing that could happen wrong,
- 1:05:29but I hope that with the
- 1:05:31people that they've hired
- 1:05:32and the eyes on the sport
- 1:05:34and maybe people that are
- 1:05:35not within our sport and
- 1:05:36can think of other things that can happen,
- 1:05:38that the right people are
- 1:05:40put into place to avoid
- 1:05:42anything that is preventable.
- 1:05:44Now, will accidents happen in sports?
- 1:05:47They can.
- 1:05:48It's, you know,
- 1:05:50there's risk inherited in certain things.
- 1:05:53But in terms of preventable
- 1:05:55things or the response to
- 1:05:57different things,
- 1:05:57I hope that the emergency
- 1:06:01action plans are well thought of and that,
- 1:06:06like I said,
- 1:06:07someone didn't die for no
- 1:06:12change to happen and that, you know,
- 1:06:15I don't know how to say it another way,
- 1:06:17but I hope that comes out right.
- 1:06:20I think it's coming out perfectly,
- 1:06:21but I want to say this.
- 1:06:25There were three demands made by the PFAA.
- 1:06:28One of them was that they
- 1:06:29wanted to see the investigation.
- 1:06:33We don't know if legally
- 1:06:34CrossFit could even show that to them,
- 1:06:36right?
- 1:06:37But it wasn't a negotiation.
- 1:06:39It was an ultimatum.
- 1:06:40PFA made an ultimatum.
- 1:06:42These three things.
- 1:06:43The other thing was they
- 1:06:44wanted to be a part of
- 1:06:45safety decisions in the future.
- 1:06:49What gives PFAA the
- 1:06:51knowledge and the ability
- 1:06:53to be safety experts in the field?
- 1:06:56CrossFit went out and
- 1:06:58brought on a safety council
- 1:07:00when we read the
- 1:07:01backgrounds of those
- 1:07:02individuals actually have
- 1:07:05safety experience behind their names.
- 1:07:09So there has been change made.
- 1:07:13Now,
- 1:07:13we have to trust that they're going to
- 1:07:14use that council because in years past,
- 1:07:18CrossFit has brought on
- 1:07:19councils and not used them.
- 1:07:21And that is well known.
- 1:07:24So that is – to me,
- 1:07:26that's the crux of the issue.
- 1:07:28I think CrossFit has done
- 1:07:29the right things if they
- 1:07:31use the people they brought on.
- 1:07:33They had the athletes elect
- 1:07:36an athlete council.
- 1:07:38But you needed – the only
- 1:07:39thing with that is you needed certain –
- 1:07:44um, not standards.
- 1:07:47Uh, like you had to have a level one,
- 1:07:48you had to have, uh, certain credentials.
- 1:07:53So I, but I think that that makes it less,
- 1:07:57um, in independent council,
- 1:08:01like less you're already bought in.
- 1:08:03Maybe you're more likely to
- 1:08:05already have certain, um,
- 1:08:12biases, which I understand.
- 1:08:16I think I, I don't like, you know,
- 1:08:17the PFA doesn't necessarily
- 1:08:19have any of those, um, uh, requirements.
- 1:08:25Um,
- 1:08:26obviously the PFA was mostly just for
- 1:08:29the games, uh,
- 1:08:30individual athletes for now, but.
- 1:08:34Yeah,
- 1:08:35I like the idea of the CAC in terms
- 1:08:36of it's reaching different
- 1:08:38age groups and stuff like that.
- 1:08:40I think there could have
- 1:08:41been some requirements that
- 1:08:42are taken away to allow
- 1:08:44more people to put their voices out
- 1:08:47board.
- 1:08:47I actually regret not putting my,
- 1:08:50my name in.
- 1:08:52I wasn't sure how much time
- 1:08:53I was going to have and stuff.
- 1:08:54And in hindsight, I wish I would be more,
- 1:08:59I wish I could play a more
- 1:09:00active role in part of the solution to,
- 1:09:03to changing things.
- 1:09:04So perhaps next year I'll give my name.
- 1:09:09I think I was,
- 1:09:10I don't know why I second
- 1:09:12guessed myself putting,
- 1:09:13cause I do have those
- 1:09:14credentials anyways.
- 1:09:16But yeah,
- 1:09:19I think a more independent group,
- 1:09:22and I think the fact that
- 1:09:24they created that without
- 1:09:25even listing or even
- 1:09:28acknowledging the PFAA also
- 1:09:29didn't sit right with many
- 1:09:31of the athletes, of course,
- 1:09:32that had already worked
- 1:09:33very hard to create certain...
- 1:09:36certain ideas,
- 1:09:37certain standards within the space.
- 1:09:39I think that that,
- 1:09:40that already shows that
- 1:09:41they weren't like they,
- 1:09:43they weren't really listening to them,
- 1:09:45which could leave a bad taste.
- 1:09:48Um, but like I said,
- 1:09:50I hope that they're
- 1:09:54acknowledging the input from,
- 1:09:55from the CAC.
- 1:09:56And I hope that the CAC
- 1:09:57reaches out to the
- 1:09:59community for more ideas.
- 1:10:02Um,
- 1:10:04surveys, whatnot,
- 1:10:06to bring up different
- 1:10:07points of things that can get better.
- 1:10:10Because like I said, as an athlete,
- 1:10:11I'm not an expert in safety.
- 1:10:13I'm not an expert in a bunch
- 1:10:15of different things.
- 1:10:16But I do have some ideas for some stuff.
- 1:10:21So
- 1:10:25there's a lot of great
- 1:10:26comments uh but they've
- 1:10:27been flown in pretty fast
- 1:10:29and furious and trying to
- 1:10:30keep up them uh has been
- 1:10:32tough uh so dex commented
- 1:10:36way earlier has anyone come
- 1:10:38out and just said that
- 1:10:39they'd make more money
- 1:10:40that's what I honestly I
- 1:10:42feel like carolyn lambray did
- 1:10:46Right.
- 1:10:46So they, they early on said,
- 1:10:49and I think that's a real thing.
- 1:10:51Like if these signups don't
- 1:10:53increase and tenth is only
- 1:10:55going to get like four or
- 1:10:56five thousand at the games,
- 1:10:59it probably makes sense to
- 1:11:00go the WFP route and get your ten, twenty,
- 1:11:04thirty, whatever you're like.
- 1:11:06I hate in one vein.
- 1:11:08I hate that it's a
- 1:11:09guaranteed contract because
- 1:11:11I want to see people fight
- 1:11:12for that prize money.
- 1:11:15Like I, I want to see, like,
- 1:11:19I'd rather see bonus for event wins.
- 1:11:21I'd rather see.
- 1:11:22I mean,
- 1:11:22you see that in sports all the time
- 1:11:24though.
- 1:11:24Like people have their
- 1:11:25contracts for the year and
- 1:11:27then they can lose it after
- 1:11:28like in professional sports,
- 1:11:30you you're given a contract for one year,
- 1:11:32two year, three year, eight year,
- 1:11:33whatever.
- 1:11:34And you can shit the bed.
- 1:11:35You can be injured,
- 1:11:37but you're guaranteed that contract.
- 1:11:38And that's what makes it professional.
- 1:11:41versus just earning.
- 1:11:42Like if you look at certain
- 1:11:43sports that you're having
- 1:11:44to earn it every year and you get injured,
- 1:11:47like it's, it's hard.
- 1:11:49Like the,
- 1:11:53I do like the guaranteed contracts.
- 1:11:55I do like that because
- 1:11:57that's what it is in professional sports.
- 1:11:59You want to have that
- 1:12:00cushion that you're not
- 1:12:01thinking about money the whole time.
- 1:12:04I'm not saying that it's a
- 1:12:08significant amount.
- 1:12:09I don't know how much money
- 1:12:09that the contracted athletes are making.
- 1:12:12There's some rumors of the
- 1:12:13thirty thousand or something like that.
- 1:12:14It's
- 1:12:18I do like that.
- 1:12:18At least it's just one year
- 1:12:21and then it's performance
- 1:12:22space and you lose it.
- 1:12:23Like you're, you're only like,
- 1:12:25and it's just really this group.
- 1:12:26That's not, that is it's,
- 1:12:29it's earned in terms of
- 1:12:31their previous performance.
- 1:12:33I just, I, I wish we knew,
- 1:12:35like still don't fully
- 1:12:37understand how the challengers work.
- 1:12:40Do they, do they get paid?
- 1:12:42Do they get like,
- 1:12:45There's it's going to,
- 1:12:47I feel like it's going to
- 1:12:47be hard for new athletes to
- 1:12:50break into this, honestly,
- 1:12:52with the point system,
- 1:12:52with the double points.
- 1:12:53And that's what I don't like.
- 1:12:54Like somehow you need to be
- 1:12:56enticing these challengers to,
- 1:12:58to get there.
- 1:12:59It needs like, why is there way not paid?
- 1:13:02Why are like,
- 1:13:06do they get four grand at the,
- 1:13:09at the end of forgetting?
- 1:13:11I don't know.
- 1:13:11Like, I don't know how that works.
- 1:13:13Um,
- 1:13:15I just,
- 1:13:17I feel like there needs to be a way
- 1:13:18to like entice these
- 1:13:20challengers pay their way, pay their,
- 1:13:24you know,
- 1:13:25like there's a reason people
- 1:13:26want to go to rogue and
- 1:13:28Dubai when it was like covering that,
- 1:13:30those costs,
- 1:13:31like to take away that burden
- 1:13:34on these newbie athletes,
- 1:13:36trying to break into the space is huge.
- 1:13:42But the reason that Rogue
- 1:13:43can do that is they're not
- 1:13:45there to make money.
- 1:13:46That is their marketing
- 1:13:47budget for the year.
- 1:13:49They're putting on a
- 1:13:50showcase of their equipment
- 1:13:51with the two biggest groups
- 1:13:53that sell their equipment.
- 1:13:55And they just want to
- 1:13:56showcase the athletes and
- 1:13:58they want to support the athletes.
- 1:14:02They honestly really care
- 1:14:03about just putting on a
- 1:14:04great show and showcasing
- 1:14:05their equipment.
- 1:14:08They're not making money
- 1:14:09from the Rogue Invitational.
- 1:14:12The last thing I want to say
- 1:14:13is why do we have to
- 1:14:14dislike either one of them?
- 1:14:16Let them both run their race.
- 1:14:18And hopefully at the end,
- 1:14:21if you can't sustain both of them,
- 1:14:24you take the best parts of
- 1:14:26both entities and you mush
- 1:14:28it together into a better season.
- 1:14:32Because it's not untrue that
- 1:14:36we've been asking CrossFit
- 1:14:37to change the season format forever.
- 1:14:41Like, aside of all the safety stuff,
- 1:14:43we have been asking for a
- 1:14:45simpler reason to follow this season,
- 1:14:49to be able to explain it.
- 1:14:51Maybe the WFP comes up with that format,
- 1:14:56and you steal that over to here,
- 1:14:59and you make a better season.
- 1:15:00Yeah.
- 1:15:02So I...
- 1:15:04I feel like I've lived that
- 1:15:06with like hockey.
- 1:15:07I mean,
- 1:15:07like we had one league and then
- 1:15:10another league started and
- 1:15:11then they had some,
- 1:15:12some great ideas of how they went,
- 1:15:14but it was still kind of divided.
- 1:15:16So like our fans were a little bit divided,
- 1:15:18but then now last year they
- 1:15:20finally came into one and
- 1:15:21they grabbed like all the best stuff.
- 1:15:23And now it's just, you know, taking off.
- 1:15:28Yeah.
- 1:15:29I, I want both to succeed.
- 1:15:30I want, I want athletes to be able to,
- 1:15:33you know,
- 1:15:34have different competitions
- 1:15:36that they can go to and, and,
- 1:15:38and earn a living and, you know,
- 1:15:40competing is just fun.
- 1:15:41Like I, I love competing.
- 1:15:43I like,
- 1:15:45I like doing it.
- 1:15:46I want those opportunities
- 1:15:47to be there for athletes.
- 1:15:48I'm at the tail end of my career.
- 1:15:50I'm entering the Masters this year.
- 1:15:55I was given many great
- 1:15:56opportunities in the sport
- 1:15:57and I don't want that to be
- 1:15:59limited for the next
- 1:16:00generation too of athletes.
- 1:16:04It's
- 1:16:05it's, it's life changing.
- 1:16:07Like it's the way that, you know,
- 1:16:09I go about my day now,
- 1:16:10like I don't do this full time,
- 1:16:11but like it changed my life.
- 1:16:13Um, and it's been a huge part of mine.
- 1:16:15So I don't, I don't want to see it die.
- 1:16:18This is my exact,
- 1:16:21I don't want to see it die.
- 1:16:22Like it means too much.
- 1:16:23It means too much to my, to my affiliate,
- 1:16:25the community.
- 1:16:26Like it just, like,
- 1:16:29I'm a fan of the sport.
- 1:16:30I'm a fan of the athletes.
- 1:16:31Like I, I,
- 1:16:33I'm a fan of the methodology.
- 1:16:34Like it's the best,
- 1:16:35best methodology out there.
- 1:16:37Um,
- 1:16:39I don't know what the right way is to
- 1:16:41move things forward to me.
- 1:16:42I I'm doing it with my community.
- 1:16:46Like that, that's, that's how, that's,
- 1:16:48that's the only way I know.
- 1:16:49Like it's, it's with them.
- 1:16:50It's, but I also respect everyone that's,
- 1:16:55that's doing it for their
- 1:16:56own reasons and not doing
- 1:16:57it for their reasons.
- 1:16:59Um,
- 1:17:01it's just, it's,
- 1:17:03it's hurting to be divided.
- 1:17:04That's for sure.
- 1:17:06Phil's comment is exactly bring that up,
- 1:17:08Scott.
- 1:17:08Cause that's exactly where I'm at.
- 1:17:10There's three qualifiers and
- 1:17:12they're not all guaranteed
- 1:17:13to make all events.
- 1:17:14It's almost impossible for a challenger.
- 1:17:16That's exactly what I think
- 1:17:18is going to happen.
- 1:17:18I think there's going to be one or two,
- 1:17:19like Colton's probably
- 1:17:20going to take somebody down and that's,
- 1:17:23and maybe one other person
- 1:17:24and that's about it.
- 1:17:25And it's going to continue
- 1:17:26to stay like that.
- 1:17:26I don't like that.
- 1:17:27I don't,
- 1:17:29I don't like the fact that
- 1:17:30the the card gets you
- 1:17:32different levels of a
- 1:17:33contract a card should be a
- 1:17:35card everybody should have
- 1:17:37the same amount regardless
- 1:17:39and you have to fight for
- 1:17:40that and then if you win
- 1:17:41more events during that
- 1:17:42year then you can make more
- 1:17:44money but the card should
- 1:17:45be of the same value across
- 1:17:47the board and I'm hearing
- 1:17:49that that is not the case
- 1:17:50that's ridiculous
- 1:17:54I want to speak to this.
- 1:17:55Games athletes with
- 1:17:56thousands and thousands of
- 1:17:57followers publicly
- 1:17:58announcing they're not
- 1:17:59doing the Open is actively
- 1:18:01hurting everything about CrossFit period.
- 1:18:03I do believe it's having an effect,
- 1:18:05but I believe that the Open
- 1:18:07is bigger than the main athletes.
- 1:18:10When I first did the Open,
- 1:18:12I didn't know about the big athletes.
- 1:18:15Like my first Open,
- 1:18:17I was clueless to what the sport was.
- 1:18:20And it's because my gym...
- 1:18:24made got me to buy in on
- 1:18:26what the open was and what
- 1:18:27this community event could be.
- 1:18:30And so I think it's,
- 1:18:31it falls on Jim affiliate
- 1:18:33owners to really promote
- 1:18:35the open on what it is as a
- 1:18:37community event.
- 1:18:38And we talked about that at
- 1:18:39length at the beginning of this podcast,
- 1:18:41all the great things that
- 1:18:43affiliate owners are doing
- 1:18:44out there to make it a family event,
- 1:18:46a community event for
- 1:18:48everybody to gather around celebration.
- 1:18:51That's why we do the open.
- 1:18:53I don't do the open because
- 1:18:55Pat Vellner did the open.
- 1:18:58I do the open because I get
- 1:19:00to hang out with my crew.
- 1:19:03And you do hard shit during
- 1:19:05those three weeks.
- 1:19:08Just signing up for
- 1:19:09something just makes you go harder,
- 1:19:11just makes you push a little bit more,
- 1:19:15keeps you accountable year to year.
- 1:19:19And Megan,
- 1:19:20your interview with Dave the
- 1:19:21other day was awesome, by the way.
- 1:19:29I think it's having an
- 1:19:30effect on more people than
- 1:19:33we would really want to admit.
- 1:19:38Yes,
- 1:19:39it's definitely going to have an impact,
- 1:19:42but I hope it's going to
- 1:19:43have a positive impact in
- 1:19:45terms of the change that
- 1:19:48needs to happen to never
- 1:19:49have this happen again.
- 1:19:51That, I hope it happens.
- 1:19:53Now,
- 1:19:54I just hope that we can also continue to
- 1:19:58have our sport and um have
- 1:20:02the opportunities keep
- 1:20:03growing like it's ken's got
- 1:20:06it I hope the impact is is
- 1:20:08there in terms of the
- 1:20:10changes if millions of
- 1:20:12followers then see the best
- 1:20:13of the best thing boycott
- 1:20:15it affects signups the
- 1:20:16numbers right now show they
- 1:20:17are having a negative
- 1:20:18effect right I I agree but
- 1:20:20I want to point out like
- 1:20:21hattie canyo made a post
- 1:20:22today why I'm in on the open that's good
- 1:20:26You heard Carolyn talk about
- 1:20:28why she's in on the Open tonight.
- 1:20:30You know that Jamie is
- 1:20:32passionate about doing the Open.
- 1:20:35We need all the other
- 1:20:37athletes that are staying
- 1:20:38in making their posts as to
- 1:20:40why they're doing it.
- 1:20:43But they sign up at the last minute.
- 1:20:47That's the thing.
- 1:20:48You got to see more...
- 1:20:52I never understood that
- 1:20:53personally but again I
- 1:20:54people have their reasons
- 1:20:56um and to me if there's a
- 1:20:59time to sign up if there's
- 1:21:01a year that you want to
- 1:21:02show a message or whatever
- 1:21:04it would be this year um
- 1:21:06like we're like by the end
- 1:21:07of the week one we're gonna
- 1:21:08see who's in and who's not
- 1:21:10like if you can if you want
- 1:21:13to be in and you want to
- 1:21:14affect it in a certain way
- 1:21:15like you have to
- 1:21:18put your, put your name out there, like,
- 1:21:20so that people can like be
- 1:21:22a leader one way or the other.
- 1:21:23Like it's whether you're
- 1:21:25being a leader and stepping
- 1:21:26away and you have your
- 1:21:27reasons and that's the way
- 1:21:29that you feel like is the
- 1:21:31best way for yourself.
- 1:21:32Okay.
- 1:21:33Be a leader the other way in
- 1:21:34terms of what you want to
- 1:21:37continue to push forward.
- 1:21:38If you want to be in a solution,
- 1:21:40if you want to be part of
- 1:21:41the solution actively, um, taking part,
- 1:21:45then I don't know.
- 1:21:47Well,
- 1:21:47To go back to your original question,
- 1:21:49Scott,
- 1:21:49I don't think there's going to be
- 1:21:51ten top tier athletes that don't sign up.
- 1:21:56So I still think it's going to be a wash.
- 1:21:58I just I don't think there's
- 1:21:59any like twenty in terms of
- 1:22:02ten each side.
- 1:22:03We're talking about twenty athletes,
- 1:22:04twenty athletes.
- 1:22:05I don't think there's gonna
- 1:22:06be ten for sure.
- 1:22:08We're in the part of the
- 1:22:10problem is I feel like some
- 1:22:11of these I'm outs were kind
- 1:22:13of already out anyway.
- 1:22:15They weren't,
- 1:22:16they were not shoe-ins to be games.
- 1:22:18I think you're going to wind
- 1:22:19up with two or three that
- 1:22:21were probably at a spot that back out.
- 1:22:23And it's not, it's not going to be like,
- 1:22:26it's not inviting new
- 1:22:27people to game because we
- 1:22:28dropped to ten spots.
- 1:22:29And I think most of the
- 1:22:32people that could be out
- 1:22:35probably have a contract or
- 1:22:37another opportunity
- 1:22:38elsewhere or they're within
- 1:22:40the retirement reach that
- 1:22:43They're already phasing out that way.
- 1:22:47So someone asked if Shay,
- 1:22:51one of our loyal listeners
- 1:22:52and always comments on our stuff,
- 1:22:54so happy that she's with us, says,
- 1:22:56is Tia in or out?
- 1:22:57And Dex's response is what I
- 1:22:59want to talk about.
- 1:23:00When the money's right, she's in.
- 1:23:02I hear.
- 1:23:03That's a big point of this, right?
- 1:23:05If you're a pro,
- 1:23:06if you're an athlete who
- 1:23:07wants to compete at the
- 1:23:08games and you want the
- 1:23:09prized purse to be as much
- 1:23:11as you can get it to be you saying, Hey,
- 1:23:14I'm in support me helps
- 1:23:18your bottom line at the end of the day.
- 1:23:20Right.
- 1:23:23Right.
- 1:23:26So, um,
- 1:23:31yeah we did we definitely
- 1:23:33went off agenda tonight for
- 1:23:35sure um but it was an
- 1:23:37important conversation I
- 1:23:38think uh we got a lot out
- 1:23:39of this um that's a great
- 1:23:48question shade then why
- 1:23:49isn't she promoting the
- 1:23:50open I mean that's her
- 1:23:52choice and and maybe she's
- 1:23:54already made a decision and
- 1:23:55we're just speculating who knows
- 1:24:00But I think if you are
- 1:24:01definitely in and you're
- 1:24:02not promoting the open,
- 1:24:05you're only hurting your
- 1:24:06bottom line at the end of the day.
- 1:24:09I agree.
- 1:24:12I don't think it's in
- 1:24:13everyone's personalities to,
- 1:24:15to necessarily promote the
- 1:24:19open or put themselves out
- 1:24:21there to be judged one way or another.
- 1:24:26So I think that's also why a
- 1:24:28lot are more quiet and kind
- 1:24:29of staying under the radar
- 1:24:31until a little bit closer.
- 1:24:34Um,
- 1:24:36But just with that, like,
- 1:24:37Barbell Spin named you as
- 1:24:39an athlete that's in.
- 1:24:41Like, they did their own research,
- 1:24:42went through the sign-ups.
- 1:24:44These are the people that
- 1:24:45have signed up and kind of
- 1:24:46did the legwork for us to
- 1:24:48see what elite-level
- 1:24:51athletes have signed up for the Open.
- 1:24:54And they put a post out there.
- 1:25:01And just to clean this up,
- 1:25:02Ruan Portgui... Ruan...
- 1:25:05I'm going to mess it up.
- 1:25:07I wrote it down, and now I can't.
- 1:25:09Pot guider.
- 1:25:10Pot guider?
- 1:25:10Something like that.
- 1:25:13Is out due to injury for this season.
- 1:25:17So that's another athlete
- 1:25:18that won't be competing,
- 1:25:19but he's doing it because
- 1:25:22he can't do it because of injury.
- 1:25:30Okay.
- 1:25:34Man, you guys are moving so fast.
- 1:25:35I'm even clicking the wrong ones.
- 1:25:37Proven is promoting the open.
- 1:25:38That is Tia's brand.
- 1:25:41That's a good point.
- 1:25:41That's a good start.
- 1:25:43It is.
- 1:25:44They have been.
- 1:25:45Probably the camp.
- 1:25:47Mayhem.
- 1:25:48Dumb and Mayhem have been the two camps,
- 1:25:50I feel like.
- 1:25:51That's good.
- 1:25:52And then right now,
- 1:25:53Max Ahaj with Trading Think
- 1:25:56Tank has been also kind of
- 1:25:59doubling down on his
- 1:26:01reasonings to stay in.
- 1:26:03So if I were to guess,
- 1:26:06maybe some of the athletes
- 1:26:07there may stay in.
- 1:26:11James Newberry, her High Rocks partner,
- 1:26:13also just posted a reel that he is in.
- 1:26:17So maybe things are pointing
- 1:26:19towards Tia being in.
- 1:26:22But yeah.
- 1:26:27I hope that.
- 1:26:31And it's been said in the comments,
- 1:26:32and I can't find it specifically,
- 1:26:34but there's been a lot of
- 1:26:36fluctuation over the period of CrossFit.
- 1:26:38Just with like when we did
- 1:26:40the sanctional season,
- 1:26:41there was a fluctuation in open signups.
- 1:26:43When we did every kind of new format,
- 1:26:47the fall open was awful for signups.
- 1:26:52If you remember that,
- 1:26:53I think that was the second
- 1:26:54sanctional season, right?
- 1:26:55The twenty twenty season.
- 1:26:56It was twenty.
- 1:26:57Yeah.
- 1:26:59Yeah,
- 1:26:59that was horrific when they tried to
- 1:27:01fall open.
- 1:27:03So there's a lot of things
- 1:27:04that affect open signups.
- 1:27:07Hopefully,
- 1:27:08this just gives new people new
- 1:27:10opportunities.
- 1:27:10It's people that we have
- 1:27:13been rooting for forever to
- 1:27:15get an opportunity to
- 1:27:16compete at the highest levels.
- 1:27:20But man, we have killed the open tonight.
- 1:27:26Yes, Dex, they can do both.
- 1:27:29at for now I'll see in the
- 1:27:30future years if that ever
- 1:27:31changes so I'm going to
- 1:27:34save the second half of the
- 1:27:35rundown for next week thank
- 1:27:37you um because I know jamie
- 1:27:40has not eaten yet I have
- 1:27:41not eaten from the gym as
- 1:27:43we went live uh but I want
- 1:27:45to thank you guys for the
- 1:27:46open dialogue um
- 1:27:49I want nothing more than
- 1:27:50this podcast to be just a
- 1:27:52safe space for everybody to
- 1:27:54talk about their feelings,
- 1:27:55whatever they are.
- 1:27:56It's okay to think
- 1:27:58differently than one another,
- 1:27:59as long as we can sit down
- 1:28:00and talk about it.
- 1:28:03That's what I'm here for.
- 1:28:05And yeah, and I like a respectful chat too,
- 1:28:09because sometimes the chats
- 1:28:10in different outlets can get out of hand.
- 1:28:14So I want a respectful
- 1:28:17podcast chat as well.
- 1:28:19So thank you for that.
- 1:28:21And while you're in the chat,
- 1:28:21you can like and subscribe.
- 1:28:25And if you listen to us on
- 1:28:26Spotify or Amazon music or iTunes,
- 1:28:30leave a five-star review
- 1:28:32and a nice comment.
- 1:28:33That would be awesome as well.
- 1:28:35Um, let us rage.
- 1:28:39Uh, Ken Walters, my mouse just died.
- 1:28:43Um, and you can eat on air.
- 1:28:45J Y and Taylor do.
- 1:28:46Uh, yeah, that'd be a mess.
- 1:28:49I have ate on air many times.
- 1:28:51When I'm at Lex's house,
- 1:28:53I try to eat off screen a little bit.
- 1:28:57Yeah.
- 1:29:00Yeah.
- 1:29:03I try to be on my best
- 1:29:03behavior on this channel.
- 1:29:05It requires a small amount,
- 1:29:07no small amount of self-control.
- 1:29:09Believe me.
- 1:29:11Same, Kenneth.
- 1:29:12That's awesome.
- 1:29:14Yeah, because we don't always agree,
- 1:29:16like all three of us on our
- 1:29:17point of views, even for a lot of things.
- 1:29:20But I think that we can
- 1:29:22respect each other at the
- 1:29:23end of the day and have
- 1:29:26good discussions on how you
- 1:29:29see things or how I see
- 1:29:30things and kind of allow
- 1:29:34other people in the chat to
- 1:29:35maybe understand different
- 1:29:37points of views,
- 1:29:38which sometimes are not
- 1:29:40seen in other podcasts.
- 1:29:41And
- 1:29:44Carolyn and Jamie have changed my name.
- 1:29:46It's have changed my mind in
- 1:29:48the past before.
- 1:29:49And maybe I've had a shot at
- 1:29:51doing that once or twice with them.
- 1:29:55But yeah, we,
- 1:29:55you should hear some of the
- 1:29:57right after we're off the
- 1:29:58air discussions.
- 1:30:04so um but you guys are the
- 1:30:07best we love each and every
