- 1:52you now, there will be soon. I think I'm on the road to
- 1:56recovery from this cold or allergies of whatever it's been. I'll try to get
- 2:00through the show today without nearly choking to death like I almost did yesterday.
- 2:02Thank goodness I had Steven al Adams here to get me through it. Yesterday.
- 2:07On today's show, the Republican nominee for Secretary of State, he got
- 2:09through a tough primary against Doug scaff Brian wood Kin reed. Now he does
- 2:14have opposition of the Democratic side. Talking about Chris Warner, he'll be stopping
- 2:16by. Brad McIlhenny is also here. We dropped something on this show a
- 2:22couple of weeks ago about a mere rumor that several Democrats and Republicans were looking
- 2:29looking to enlist perhaps Senator Joe Manchin to run for governor of West Virginia.
- 2:35Not exactly how that would happen if it does, but this thing really took
- 2:38legs yesterday. We're going to talk to Brad about that. Plus, you
- 2:43know, we have interims going on. I think they're going to gabble in
- 2:46one body at eleven and one of twelve to death I think, or maybe
- 2:49it's twelve and one. Anyway, Brad'll get to that a little bit later
- 2:53on and within the last hour if news broke. That's really no surprise here
- 2:57that former President Trump has now endorsed Patrick Morrissey for the governorship in Westream.
- 3:02Again, no surprise that we're going to talk to Brad about several of those
- 3:05things if I have an opportunity. I do want to give you an update
- 3:08on Doug scaff Secretary of State candidate from a legislator who was snake bitten literally
- 3:14last week. I don't mean to laugh about it, but I talked to
- 3:15Doug yesterday and he's still in the hospital. He's still got a long road
- 3:20to recovery. I'm gonna give you an update on his condition. Plus the
- 3:23investigation continues into this the shooting that took place Sunday afternoon at Shawnee Park,
- 3:30or actually not at Shawnee Park, it was actually a couple of blocks away
- 3:32on Smooth Avenue and Dunbar. A lot of questions are coming out of that,
- 3:36including why is it that so many of the I don't really want to
- 3:39call them escape routes, but let's just say the entry ways or exit ways,
- 3:45how many of them were locked? And we're going to get into that
- 3:49a little bit later on Ac County CHEMISTR. Bensolango is actually going to join
- 3:52us to address that. Coming up a little bit later on, so we
- 3:54got lots to do. I want to welcome into the show though Deb Rusnak,
- 3:58Mister Rusnak just survived i'd a tough primary race for prosecuting Attorney Kanawa County
- 4:02and she joins us. Now, Deb, good morning and welcome to the
- 4:04show. Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me. So, I
- 4:08guess primary part of it's over now it is all right. I want to
- 4:12talk about the campaign because it was contentious, to say the least. Certainly,
- 4:18yes, yes it was, but you know, it was a hard
- 4:23fought battle. I will congratulate my opponent for her efforts, but I'm ready
- 4:30to move forward. I am thankful that the voters chose me, and I'm
- 4:33ready to continue to run a good, positive campaign and continue to be a
- 4:39good representative for the Kanah County Prosecutor's office. Is there, and again,
- 4:43I know that you're kind of taking the high road here, and I applaud
- 4:46you for that. But this is alre anything that you want to say about
- 4:47the race in general. You know, I kept my race, my campaign
- 4:51positive, and I relied on my experience and my record as a tough public
- 4:57servant. So I don't think I need to to change that. Now,
- 5:00I think I need to continue to move forward, continue to take the high
- 5:03road, and continue to be the candidate that Kennall County wants. You know,
- 5:09it can be kind of confusing because with these judicial races, a lot
- 5:12of them were over in the primary, that was it. But the prosecuting
- 5:17attorney is a little bit different because you do have opposition. Now you're not
- 5:20done, I mean, you're done with the primary, but you're going to
- 5:24have opposition when the voters head of the polls in November. That's true,
- 5:28it is a partisan race. While I believe that the job of the prosecutor
- 5:34is not something that necessarily is a partisan position, simply because one thing we
- 5:43never know about a defendant or a suspect and a crime is what their political
- 5:46affiliation is. That's just something that doesn't matter, doesn't affect how we do
- 5:51our job at the prosecutor's office. But unfortunately, it is a partisan race.
- 5:58And so I will be up a give against the Democratic nominee come November.
- 6:03And that gentlemen's name is John Mitchell. We'll be hearing that name a
- 6:06lot, and I'll have him on the show and you several times, you
- 6:09know, between now and in the election in November. So what does the
- 6:15what's the rest of the summer look like for you? Of me? Because
- 6:16you know, like I said, with a lot of the more judicial type
- 6:19situations, they're done, but you still got a campaign to run. So
- 6:24you got through this tough primary. What does the rest of it look like?
- 6:27Now? So I've been doing this for about eleven months now. So
- 6:30I did this last summer. I'm going to basically do the same thing this
- 6:32summer. Get out there, get myself into areas where I am able to
- 6:39speak to large numbers of people in Kanawak County, door knocking parades, events
- 6:46that I can attend to meet people, and just continue to get my name
- 6:50out there, continue to tell people what my mission is and what I would
- 6:55like to see happened at the Prosecutor's office. And you talked about a lot
- 6:58of this when we had you on on prior to the race debb. But
- 7:01maybe if people didn't listen, what is your message? What is it that
- 7:04you want to get done now that you've got to the primary, and now
- 7:08what is your message to voters as we head into the general election in November.
- 7:12You know, again, I am at the prosecutor's office. Now I
- 7:15have the ability to be able to see what's happening in the office, where
- 7:20the changes need to be made, and how to continue to move the office
- 7:24forward, and frankly, how to handle cases and be transparent with the public
- 7:30so that people understand not only what we are doing with cases, but why
- 7:34we're doing it. I think that's a huge aspect of this job that people
- 7:41don't necessarily see, is being able to explain to the public why we do
- 7:45things, how we do things, and how the prosecutor's office can continue to
- 7:50move forward with cases that are frankly sometimes difficult. As you are out on
- 7:55the and again we're talking with Deb Rusnak, who won the Republican primary last
- 8:00week with prosecuting attorneys, she'll now move on to the general elections, she
- 8:03will have a Democratic opponent in the fault. As you were out on the
- 8:07campaign trail, what did you hear from the public, What did people come
- 8:11up to you and say, hey, this is my issue with the prosecutor's
- 8:15office, or these are things that I think need to be because again,
- 8:18just like as I've said this on the show before, just like with any
- 8:22other judicial race, whether it's prosecute attorney, magistrate or whatever. Family court
- 8:26doesn't matter unless you've been there, unless you've experienced or had dealings. But
- 8:31they may not even think about it. But what did you hear from the
- 8:35public out there at these forums or when you were door knocking or whatever.
- 8:39But what did the public tell you that they wanted to see from the prosecutor's
- 8:41office. The public is frustrated that we are continuing to allow people to be
- 8:46out on bond and commit crime while they are on bond, And frankly,
- 8:50it's not something that we allow, but it does happen certain misdemeanor cases.
- 8:56There's a limit on the amount of bond that we can set and a lot
- 9:01of people don't know that. They don't understand that, you know, we
- 9:03have guidelines that we have to follow, and so they really push for our
- 9:09office to revoke bonds on people who commit crime while they are already on a
- 9:15bond. That's a huge thing that I hear. They want violent offenders off
- 9:20of the streets. Members of the public do not want to walk around the
- 9:24streets with people who are likely to harm them, and so that's a huge
- 9:28thing that was stressed to me throughout the campaign, and you know, I'm
- 9:33really surprised that the number of people who don't understand how the judicial system works
- 9:39and don't know that it's open to the public. I invite members of the
- 9:43public come to the courthouse see what we do, and I think members of
- 9:48the public would be very impressed with some of the work that goes on in
- 9:52that courthouse. It's really astounding. Dave Allan Chill and five An Your Life

- 14:28Let's welcome into the show now. Republican nominee for Secretary of State. Chris
- 14:33Warner, Chris, good morning, and congratulations is welcome to the show.
- 14:35Good morning, David, Thank you for having me, Thank you for being
- 14:37here. Was a tough fight. I mean, this Secretary of States race,
- 14:41you know, that's one of the that's one of the and there's no
- 14:45this thing as an unimportant office under the Capitol Dome, but it's one that
- 14:50sometimes in some elections past maybe didn't get all the attention, but this one
- 14:54certainly did. This one and the AG's race both were pretty contentious races.
- 15:00Yeah, those were hard fought races. And by the way, I've got
- 15:03to tell you I heard that Doug scaff is still in the hospital. My
- 15:05prayers go out to him and his family. I know his kid's got to
- 15:09be missing him if he's still in the hospital. And you know, these
- 15:13races run you down physically, and that couldn't help to have been run down
- 15:18before, you know, receiving the snake bites. So I know he's in
- 15:22for a long recovery and our prayers are with him. Let's talk about the
- 15:28battle. I mean between you had yourself and you had mister Scaff, and
- 15:31you had Brian Wood, and you had Ken Reid. What was it about
- 15:33the Chris Warner message that seemed to resonate with voters? You think, you
- 15:37know, I think you know, how you get that message out is is
- 15:41difficult in most races that that comes down to how many dollars you're able to
- 15:46raise from how many contributors. But you know, we had, you know,
- 15:50thirty five years of working within the Republican Party and this was a Republican
- 15:54Party nomination, So we had lots of friends out there that were sharing messages
- 15:58on face Book and that sort of thing. So it's helpful to have that
- 16:03kind of support across all fifty five counties. And I think in the end
- 16:07that it came down to you friends, sharing messages with friends and communicating the
- 16:14message, our conservative message about continuing the work that Secretary of State Mac Warner
- 16:19and his staff and all fifty five county clerks have started. We'll talk about
- 16:25your brother Mac full disclosure, my former boss. He was concentrating on his
- 16:29own race as he came up short in that battle with the Republican nomination for
- 16:33governor. Did you talk to Mic on election night? I did. I
- 16:36saw Mike on election night. You know, he was along I think sixteen
- 16:41months. He gave it everything he had and it didn't turn out. I
- 16:47know that he called and spoke with Patrick Morrissey and congratulated him. I know
- 16:51they've talked a couple of times since then, and it's all behind Patrick Morrisey
- 16:56at this point to make sure that he wins a race in November, as
- 17:02it pertains to the Secretary of State's office. Now, of course, Mac
- 17:04will will remain Secretary of State until January of next year, when whom whether
- 17:10it's yourself or your Democratic opponent, is sworn in in January of next year.
- 17:17So Mac want to remain Secretary of State. What has his advice been
- 17:19to you about the office or have you even gotten there yet? You know,
- 17:22Max suggested that I speak with those working in the office, so the
- 17:26deputy Secretaries of State, the staff workers, the people down at the one
- 17:30stop shop. We have not had much time at all, you know,
- 17:36to talk from you know, if I'm elected in November, and I intend
- 17:40to be elected in November, but I'm sure in the next couple of months
- 17:45we'll be able to have more time to speak. But he's opened the door
- 17:49to speak with staff workers and they have been very helpful, very organized.
- 17:56I'm extremely impressed with the Secretary of State's Office staff and the way they work
- 18:02with the county clerks. And again I've said it on this show many many
- 18:06times before again we're talking to Chris Warner, who's the Republican nominee for Secretary
- 18:08of State. I've said this because I have experience having worked there. People
- 18:12don't realize everything that the Secretary of State's Office does. I mean, everybody,
- 18:15in every facet of life, on your daily existence, you somehow encounter
- 18:22something that has to do with the Secretary of State's office, whether it's business
- 18:25or whether it's a charity or whatever. I got a I mean one of
- 18:29the things that you say they're responsible for, you know, and we all
- 18:33know the chief Election Officer and those duties. But it was just pointed out
- 18:37to me this morning by one of the staff members in the Secretary of State's
- 18:40Office that there were eight, nine hundred and fourteen ballot styles in this election.
- 18:47So you look at, you know, one hundred house districts and seventeen
- 18:51state Senate districts, and circuit court races and magistrate races. You know,
- 18:56you look at all the different races, some city races added in there.
- 19:00And when you realize that every precinct is different with various names on that ballot,
- 19:07you just realize how much work the county clerks are responsible for, and
- 19:11then ultimately the Secretary of State's office, you know, for pulling it all
- 19:17together. You know, we're in the middle of canvassing right now, and
- 19:19you know, if if everything goes well and there's no challenges to any of
- 19:26these races, you might have, you know, this election certified by the
- 19:30end of the week, if not early next week. And then to realize
- 19:34on top of that, they are only six workers dedicated from the Secretary of
- 19:37State's office on elections. You know, the other two thirds of that office
- 19:42is focused on business registrations. There is an awful lot for that office and
- 19:48staff to stay on top of every single day because you know, the maintenance
- 19:53voter maintenance of the voter list. People are going to die every day,
- 19:57They're going to be people that move out of state, there's gonna be people
- 20:00convicted of felonies. There's just an awful lot of work for them to stay
- 20:04on top of it. And of course, as I said, with that
- 20:07office, if you're a notary, he goes to the Secretary of State's office.
- 20:10If you have an HOA, he goes to the Secretary of State's office.
- 20:12Your charitable organization of a certain size goes through the secretary of State's office.
- 20:18That's a that's quite a lot of responsibility here, y, the somewhat
- 20:21of a collection of a number of loose sinds, including communications for the governor's
- 20:27office when legislations passed, and nothing is officially a bill. When the governor
- 20:32signs a bill, it's all ceremonial until it goes to the office of the
- 20:37Secretary of State. It's just all it's all pictures at that point. That's
- 20:41absolutely correct. Talking with Chris Warner again, the day island showing five any
- 20:45life bright to you, apart by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty
- 20:48Birds. At last, the Dirty Birds have a home game. They're back
- 20:51at Gomart Ballpark tonight to take on the Flying box Cars of Hagerstown six point
- 20:55thirty five First pitch Night. It's two dollars Tuesday, presented by Embassy Suites
- 20:59and Breeze Airways. Two dollar game tickets, two dollars hot dogs, two
- 21:02dollars sodas, and two dollars popcorn schedules, dirty Birds gear promotions and more
- 21:06of is a dirty Birds baseball dot com. All right, so it's not
- 21:10over yet. You do have opposition in the general in the form of Forton
- 21:12Cooper, who's going to be the Democratic nominee. What makes Chris Warner the
- 21:17better candidate? I think I'm more in line quite frankly, Dave, with
- 21:22most of the West Virginia voters and citizens, just by my conservative nature.
- 21:30I think this will be a classic lineup of a very liberal Democrat candidate in
- 21:37November and a very conservative candidate and me as the Republican nominee. And I
- 21:42urge folks to educate yourself on everything you can via the Internet about each of
- 21:48the each of the candidates and making an informed decision come the November general election.
- 21:55One of the things before we close on again, you kind of you
- 21:57mentioned the word voter maintenance there and the voter roles one of the things that
- 22:02Mick wanted to did a Secretary of State. I don't know what the current
- 22:04total was, and you probably downy taking four hundred and forty thousand names.
- 22:10In the last seven years, four hundred and forty thousand names were taken off
- 22:12the voter rolls in the last seven years. And again that sounds like a
- 22:15lot, but there's a variety of reasons for that. You know, it's
- 22:21people that haven't voted in federal elections. It's people that have moved out of
- 22:23state and have not notified their county clerk that they know they moved to Charlotte
- 22:27and they didn't think to notify their county clerk to say, take me off
- 22:30the voter rolls. So I'm sure that you want to continue. That took
- 22:34traffic because it's a big expense to the taxpayers to have these people on the
- 22:40voter rolls that aren't actually legal voters. That and it comes down to voter
- 22:44confidence, Dave. People need to be able to know when they hear what
- 22:48percentage of the voters turned out to vote, that those numbers are accurate.
- 22:52They can't be bloated by four hundred and forty thousand names. But you know,
- 22:56one thing I know that Mike is very proud of is as well as
- 23:00your friend and my friend Lee Dean, is registering new high school voters in

- 23:18lists as well. All right, Chris, I appreciate you being here.
- 23:22Thanks a lot. Any final words. I know this is the time the

- 23:33to thank the more than eight thousand poll workers in West Virginia that voted and
- 23:38worked in this election, and thanked the fifty five county clerks for the excellent
- 23:42work they did. You know, ten thirty on election night here in Kanall
- 23:45County, the office was shutting down down at voter registration and the TV cameras
- 23:52were headed home. So they did an excellent job all across the state in
- 23:56administering this election. Yeah, because I was here, I was working with
- 24:02Chris Lawrence and I were doing election coverage here locally in WCCHS, and I
- 24:07presumed it'd be a twelve twelve thirty night before I got out of here because
- 24:10we were covering Kanawa County and as you said, we could have probably well,
- 24:14christ and Carey stayed all night. Oh sure, but because they had
- 24:15to. They have to get things out to the network and everything. But
- 24:18I mean, I thought I was going to be here t twelve or twelve
- 24:22thirty because of Kanawah County. And that's just because it is the state's largest
- 24:25county. It's not a slam on Vera McCormick or anything. They do a
- 24:27great job, but it is the largest county in the state, and sometimes
- 24:30it's kind of you know, it's a very diverse county and whatever. But
- 24:33we were at we were pretty much wrapped up, as you said, by
- 24:36ten thirty or so. Yeah. I got a shout out to Vera McCormick,
- 24:38the county clerk in Kanawac County. I wanted to vote early. Was
- 24:41in and out in less than ten minutes. It was, you know,

- 30:52Well, that's what I told That's what I told my producer Ryan. I
- 30:55said, you know, we're going to try to get Brad on this morning,
- 30:56but he was doing like seven other radio interviews this morning. Man,
- 31:00you're a popular guy. So I have cooled my heels on my own count
- 31:06for a few minutes to call into shows around the state. And I am
- 31:10not sure I am so popular. I mean, there is a special session
- 31:14going on, but there is also a radio friendly topic involving Senator Mansion,
- 31:19and I think that may be part of the allure of bringing me on some
- 31:25shows. Well, yeah, you're right about that. Before I do get
- 31:27to that, I do want to mention that if news broke within the last
- 31:30hour. So really no surprise here, and I'm not trying to, you
- 31:33know, gloss over it, but it's really no surprise that former President Trump
- 31:37has endorsed Patrick Morrissey in the race for governor. Really no surprise there.
- 31:44I was surprised by the timing. Oh okay, okay, I'll give you
- 31:45that. Yeah, you know, I mean the I read into the timing.
- 31:51Actually, the primary election was just last week. Trump did not endorse
- 31:57among those candidates, did endorse Governor Justice for Senate, but did not endorse
- 32:05Patrick Morrissey prior to the primary, ending, did not endorse more Capito at
- 32:10the time, did not endorse Chris Miller or Mac Warner. Morrissey came out
- 32:17of that with thirty three percent of the vote. He has been making pleas
- 32:23and pitches and emphasizing uniting Republicans behind his candidacy. Now, and you know
- 32:31a common thread through Republican campaigns in West Virginia, this will shock here is
- 32:37alignment with President Trump? What yes? And so I found the timing very
- 32:44interesting that this morning former President Trump on Troop Social his own social media platform,
- 32:52tells everybody in West Virginia to unite behind Patrick Morrissey, that Patrick Morrisey
- 32:58has my complete and total endorsement. In all caps. He will not let
- 33:01you down. He will maybe even maybe even more interesting to me, was
- 33:07was one of the other lines, not all in caps. Trump said,
- 33:10now is the time for all Republicans to unite behind Patrick Morrissey to ensure he
- 33:16has a tremendous capital of v victory in November. So the time now is
- 33:22the time for all those to unite. So how much of this do you
- 33:24think, Brad, with this timing, And that's really something I hadn't thought
- 33:28about till you brought it up. The tim into this whole thing, how
- 33:30much of this do you think is in response to. I mean something I
- 33:35brought up on the show two to three weeks ago about this rumor about Mansion
- 33:38getting in, and it really took leg you know, took legs big time
- 33:42over the weekend and into yesterday. The story has now gone nationwide that former
- 33:47governor current US Senator Joe Manchin is being recruited to somehow get in involved in
- 33:52the race for governor, being recruited by Democrats and Republicans. How much is
- 33:59that is just coincidence with this endorsement from Trump? What do you think?
- 34:04Well, I will admit to you, I don't know. But that was
- 34:06another reason I thought, oh, very interesting timing, you know, so
- 34:10we met. Our News went ahead with a more traditional news story yesterday about
- 34:16sources close to Mansion saying that Republicans had reached out to gauge his interest in
- 34:24running against Morrissey, indicating from the Republican side some dissatisfaction with Morrissey as the
- 34:32Republican nominee. Within a couple of hours, I had received a statement from
- 34:40the state Republican party chairman indicating support for Morrissey. The National Republican Governors Association
- 34:49got me on my cell phone and sent me a statement expressing their support for
- 34:55Morrissey, and then overnight President Trump comes in on truth Social with an endorsement
- 35:02of Morrissey, the highest profile endorsement that are Republican candidate in a very trumpy
- 35:09state could expect to get. So. I don't know what is behind the
- 35:15scenes at work, but it seemed a little early to me one week out
- 35:22from the primary election headed into Novembers general election for that kind of endorsement.
- 35:29But I you know, I think it's all part of an effort by Morrissey
- 35:34and the supporters to try to generate as much unity in the party as they
- 35:38possibly can. Well, I got a couple of texts here that are related
- 35:42to what we're talking about. Then I want to talk to talk to you
- 35:45about your discussion with Steve Williams, who is the Democratic nominee for governor in
- 35:50West Virginia. Do you want to remind you phone calls of Dave Allen Show
- 35:52and five eighty Live or a service of big Ley Piggly Whiggley on Spring Street
- 35:54and texting services provided by Fruit Pharmacy, your hometown family Pharmacy. One of
- 35:59the techs says this mansion return rumor is chicanery by the GOP. They're show
- 36:06they're sewing uncertainty and discord among their opponents, says a Texture. Your response
- 36:13to that, oh man, I don't know. It's I mean, it's
- 36:16messy everywhere. It's it's if if it is true that there are that there
- 36:22is a significant Republican outreach for Mansion of all people to get in in opposition
- 36:30to Morrissey, well that is not a good look for the age. And
- 36:35I mean he did get the thirty three percent that Morsey got means that my
- 36:39math is not that great. But what sixty seven percent voted for somebody else
- 36:45and it was brutal, But I mean it puts. It does put Steve
- 36:50Williams, the Democratic nominee, in an awkward position too. It seems to
- 36:53me where you know, he's over getting Williams is over here like pointing hi
- 36:58stuff, going hey, hey, I'm still here. I'm still here.
- 37:00And you talked to him yesterday and he said, there's no way he's stepping
- 37:02aside, No way he's stepping aside. You know, he does not believe
- 37:08that Mansion would be interested in pushing him aside to become the Democratic nominee.
- 37:16He says they've known each other for four decades. The Mansion gave to him
- 37:22in the primary, and he anticipates support, including financial from Mansion going into
- 37:29the general And Williams, who was at the Capitol yesterday, says he's here
- 37:36to run and run hard, So it puts him in an awkward spot.
- 37:39But on the other hand, we're saying his name, which at this point,
- 37:42if you're trying to generate statewide name recognition, that aspect of it is
- 37:46good for you. I mean knock. Got a couple of texts here related
- 37:50to this situation. One text says, Brad the reason Trump endorsed Morrissey today
- 37:53is because the Morrissey camp is shaking in their boots at the thought they may
- 37:58face Joe Manchin. They asked Trump for the endorsement because they're very afraid.
- 38:02Your thoughts, Well, I think they would have asked Trump for an endorsement
- 38:07anyway. I would not have been surprised they was expedited next day mail please,
- 38:17So I will say that my impression when Metro News got a couple of
- 38:30people close to Mansion to describe the outreach that they are seeing, and then
- 38:37I took the gist of that to Morrissey's campaign yesterday reached out to those guys,
- 38:45and my impression was that they were all hands on deck and responding that
- 38:51they actually took at least the story quite seriously. And it was no coincidence
- 38:59that I quickly got a response from the state Republican Party chairman, the National
- 39:05Republican Governors Association. And I mean, whether the Trump endorsement overnight was directly
- 39:13related or not, I do not know. Can't make that claim on any
- 39:16solid ground. But again, the timing was interesting. Let me just say
- 39:21this too. I was watching one of the broadcast stations here in Charleston,
- 39:27and they, like you, they had also caught up with Steve Williams yesterday
- 39:31and they were kind of and this is not a knocking as in, but
- 39:34they were just kind of, you know, kind of the same, Well,
- 39:36it's not going to happen, because Steve Williams said it's not gonna happen.
- 39:38But whom we've not heard from here Brad is Joe Manchin. Now,
- 39:44I mean it's nine forty six on Tuesday morning. By the time that I
- 39:47turn off the microphone, we could have a statement for Mansion saying that there
- 39:51is absolutely no truth to this. He hasn't done anything like that, Brad.
- 39:55You know, he did get approached Washington right now his job with the
- 40:00US Senate, and he got approached by national reporters yesterday, evening several of
- 40:07them Politico, Axios others who asked her about the situation. And he's being
- 40:17in Washington gives him a certain degree of insulation, and he said, well,
- 40:22I don't really know about these rumors. I don't I don't know what's
- 40:24going on, So I'll a denial about knowledge of the Republican outreach. But
- 40:35these national reporters went on to press Mansion about well, are you interested or
- 40:39not? And the impression that these national reporters gave was that he did not
- 40:46commit, one way or another to considering at this point running for governor or
- 40:52not. Who among us has not witnessed the process of Joe Mansion making a
- 41:01political decision. And you know there are phases, oh yeah, you know,
- 41:07he in several instances deciding whether to run for governor against Jim Justice in
- 41:14twenty twenty, deciding to run for re election to his own Senate seat last
- 41:21year, deciding whether to run third party for president. Almost all of last
- 41:27year. I mean there's there's a phase of waffling, a phase of out
- 41:32and out decision making. Sometimes it manifests as public fretting, and then sometimes
- 41:39he backs off, usually of what he has been considering doing. So that
- 41:45could be the case here, But it's interesting scuttle but in the meantime interesting
- 41:50for all of us, including the national folks, to wonder what is going
- 41:53through Joe mansions head. All right, Well, before I let you go,
- 41:57I actually did want you to talk about what's going on in the capitol
- 41:59down So if you got thirty seconds there is that. So what's what's going
- 42:06on over there? So the governor put forth fifteen items for the special session
- 42:10agenda it begins Sunday evening. Thirteen of those have been passed. The final
- 42:16hang up going into day three of the special session is the appropriate level of
- 42:22human services funding, in particular support for families who rely on financial support for
- 42:30intellectual and disability intellectual and developmental disabilities for their loved ones, bringing paid staff
- 42:37in to help with that support. Everybody wants to make sure that program has
- 42:45enough money so that those families get the support they need. But there are
- 42:50remaining questions between the House and the Senate about how to properly apply oversight to
- 42:57how that money is spent, and that disagreement has put that particular piece of
- 43:02legislation into an uncertain position going into day three of the special session. All
- 43:10right, Brad, I know you're on top of it, and we'll be

- 48:12terrifying. I mean, and I've seen some of the video footage and you
- 48:15know, the shots were loud. It was two blocks away, but it
- 48:16was very loud, and so the people on the baseball side thought there was
- 48:20an active shooter. It wasn't on the complex, but they they heard it
- 48:24and it was incredibly loud, and you know, you can hear some of
- 48:28the videos online. But you know that we do active shooter drills at Shawnee
- 48:32every six months. We train. But like Mike Tyson said, everybody has
- 48:37a plan to get punched in the face, right, and so we're going
- 48:39back now and evaluating all of it. So, so what about the lock
- 48:43gates, Yeah, there were two lock gates. I mean so on the
- 48:46on the back, so on the soccer side, not on the baseball side,
- 48:50but all the way on the soccer side near the pitch, which is
- 48:52right outside the swimming pool, there's a locked gate. And then also on
- 48:58the other side towards Russian the state, there's a lot gates, so a
- 49:00lot of people when the people ran from the baseball side into the soccer side,
- 49:05you know, understandably panicked. That forced people over into that corner and
- 49:12they couldn't get out. And so what we're going to do, We're looking
- 49:14at several different things. You know, there were reasons why some of the
- 49:17gates are locked, but we can implement a new system where it's almost like
- 49:23like in the school system, where you've got the bar on the door that
- 49:28you push and after you go through the door, it locks behind you.
- 49:30So that would be a win win for us. So we people would be
- 49:32able to get out in an emergency, but then folks from the outside couldn't
- 49:37get in. And if we have those bars high enough, we wouldn't have
- 49:39you know, three year olds escaping and running out into the road or anything
- 49:44like that. So it's a balance. We're going to look at that that's
- 49:47something I think we can do fairly quickly. It's something honestly that had not
- 49:52occurred to me or our emergency management folks before. And then they're thinking,
- 49:57what I do. I'm going to have more escape exits like that emergen see
- 50:00exits, because you can run. That's a big facility, So you can
- 50:04run hundreds of yards and have no exit, no gate, nothing, And
- 50:08so we need to install more of those emergency gates along the along the back
- 50:14of the park, even over on the grass side, like towards the railroad
- 50:17tracks towards like the back of Westernia State have some additional emergency exits. All
- 50:23right, So, I mean I understand the panic on behalf of the parents.
- 50:27Sure, but it is important to remember that this happened basically two blocks
- 50:30away. But this was how how far was it? Half a mile?
- 50:34I mean from the locked gate to the and I don't want to try to
- 50:37minimalize it, but you know that it's about it's according to Google Earth,
- 50:40it zero point four to four miles. I mean, it's almost a half
- 50:43a mile. But they didn't know that. They thought there was a shooter
- 50:45in the park. In fact, the first call that I got said there
- 50:49was a shooter in the park and this was and even said that there were
- 50:53bullets ricocheting off of the bleachers. So you know, one of the things
- 50:57that particularly when you're dealing with long uns like Ar's aks, things like that.
- 51:01I mean, they're incredibly loud. I was at the shooting range with
- 51:07Maya or that morning. They're really loud, and so so you've got to
- 51:10make sure so people they echo through and people don't know where the shot is
- 51:14coming from. So that's that's understandable. That's why I think there was the
- 51:20response. The parents did a great job, the coaches did a great job,
- 51:24our staff did everything that they could possibly do, you know, directing
- 51:29people out. But there's room for improvement and and we're going to make those
- 51:34necessary changes and make I want this facility to be safe. I want everybody
- 51:37to feel safe. Uh and and we're gonna we're gonna make some significant improvements.
- 51:42All right, give me thirty seconds as we close on your message to
- 51:45the parents or grandparents of people that were concerned there. First, I apologize,
- 51:50I truly do. I mean I mean that in all sincerity. I
- 51:52hate that this happened. I hate that they felt unsafe. I feel I
- 51:58know that they're going through a lot, and you know we're gonna make it
- 52:01better, all right, Ben, As always, I appreciate you being here.
