- 0:07The American League All-Stars faced the Military All-Stars at the U.S. Service All-Star Game at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on July 7, 1942.
- 0:15Throughout World War II, Major League Baseball teams played countless exhibition games against service teams that were comprised of current and past professional ball players that were enlisted in the military.
- 0:25These games were scheduled in order to raise funds in support of troops and their families.
- 0:30This All-Star Game was the most notable of the exhibition games and was slated to feature the winner of the Major League All-Star Game playing host to a collection of players serving in the Armed Forces.
- 0:39The AL All-Stars had won against the National League a day earlier at the Polo Grounds in New York, so manager Joe McCarthy and the American League headed to Cleveland.
- 0:47The U.S. service team was managed by Mickey Cochran. Cochran was a lieutenant in the Navy and had last managed in the big leagues during 1938 as skipper of the Tigers.
- 0:55The main draw of the game was starting pitcher and hometown hero Bob Feller, who is currently serving as an officer in the Navy.
- 1:01This audio recording is from the Mutual Radio broadcast featuring announcers Wade Hoyt, Bob Elson, and Jack Graney.
- 1:31in World War Number One and the 31 game winner for the Cleveland Indians in 1920.
- 1:36Buddy Rezah will be the catcher for the Americans. Now Buddy Rezah is considered second string on the Yankees, the runner-up to Big Bill Dickey, yet Rezah on any other club would be the first string receiver and well thought of.
- 1:49Tonight's contest gives you something to consider when you realize that Bobby Feller will be pitching in front of his hometown of Meyers against blue drove Kelsner and Bagsy, former teammates of his.
- 2:00Days gone by, Boudreaux and Keltner stood out at shortstop and third base,
- 2:03and Rebellion the Ys in which Feller retired their opponents.
- 2:07Tonight, both those batters will be on the receiving end of Bobby's juniors.
- 2:11They'll have to hit against them, and that's not going to be easy.
- 2:14The game as far as we can see it will be decided by the conference.
- 2:18Think the American Lakers, no matter how great their lineup appears to be,
- 2:22much more runs to win.
- 2:24And as Mike said over coffee this morning,
- 2:26well, I think Feller and Rigney can hold them while our service team hasn't been stopped yet,
- 2:31not by any club.
- 2:33Well, that's McCoffee's worry.
- 2:34The American Lakers have a powerful aggregation to throw us a service for,
- 2:38but as only nine men can play the game at once,
- 2:41the Major League All-Stars will have to be at their very best to win.
- 2:44And you must remember, baseball fans, that old but true added,
- 2:48anything can happen in baseball.
- 2:51And once again, here's Bob Ellers.
- 2:52Thank you very much, Wade White, for that fine
- 2:56analyzation of this American League team that we're going to see here in the stadium tonight.
- 3:01And Al Shack, baseball's famous crown,
- 3:04is getting the center of the stage now, friends, because all these service men are off the field.
- 3:09And now Al is walking out to the center of the diamond and giving an impersonation of Bob Feller.
- 3:15He just gave one to Waller Johnson.
- 3:17He just walked out to the mound and hit the ball way up into the wire,
- 3:19getting back to the plate, and now he's gone out there with that rather,
- 3:23he has gotten down almost to a tee, that rather unique stride of Bob Feller.
- 3:30You know, Bob is one of the grandest fellows in baseball.
- 3:33I think he's been one of the most popular ball players of all time,
- 3:36but he has a rather odd stride.
- 3:38And Al Shack, believe me, has it right down to a tee,
- 3:41and he just walked out there to the mound, and now he's starting to wind up,
- 3:45and he's going to heave another baseball,
- 3:47and he's definitely going to heave home right up into the screen, and Bob really likes it.
- 3:52It's just a few minutes before game nine, before the All-Star game here in Cleveland,
- 3:58and the umpires, I've noticed, have just poked their heads.
- 4:12The umpires have just poked their heads out of the dugout,
- 4:14and they're coming out shortly, and this ball game will be underway,
- 4:18I believe, in just a couple of minutes.
- 4:19I want to repeat the starting orders and lineups for those of you who might be tuning in late,
- 4:26and it is for the service team Mullen, M-U-L-L-I-N, formerly of Detroit,
- 4:34in the better field, McCoy of the Athletics, here at second base,
- 4:38John Shaggitt, who was formerly with the Cardinals, and then with Brooklyn, and some good news now
- 4:45is about who he really wound up with, but he's finally with Uncle Sam, he's going to be in left field.
- 4:50Daniel Kavett, the great Washington insurderer, is going to bat in the number four spot,
- 4:55and will play shortstop.
- 4:57Joe Grace, a very fine off-fielder and a mighty good hitter, is going to be in right field,
- 5:02he was with the St. Louis Browns.
- 5:03Sturm, the former Yankee first baseman, is going to be at first.
- 5:07And Lee, who is with Louisville, this lad was a great college athlete, is going to be at third base.
- 5:13The catcher will be Smith, an all-time Pittsburgh catcher, who has been catching
- 5:17Scott Feller down at North Pole.
- 5:19Bobby Feller is going to be the catcher.
- 5:22Zach is still carrying on with his addicts down here, and he's putting on an imaginary
- 5:26argument right now with the umpire, as we give you the lineup for the American League.
- 5:32Here it is, the body-waterer lineup at shortstop and leading off will be Lou Badrow, who as
- 5:38Wade Hoek said was one of the heroes at the big game in the Polo grounds last night.
- 5:41Henrik, A-T-N-R-I-T-H to the Yankees in right field.
- 5:45Williams, a Boston in left field.
- 5:49DiMaggio, a New York in center field.
- 5:52West of Detroit at first base.
- 5:55Bobby Gore, a Boston, is going to start his second base tonight in face of Gordon.
- 6:00Benny Kelter of Cleveland will start at Thursday.
- 6:03Buddy Rozar of New York will be the starting catcher.
- 6:07And Jim Begbie, the famous son of a famous father, is going to be pitching.
- 6:13We also want to tell you friends that there is going to be a one-minute blackout here
- 6:17tonight.
- 6:18If you only experienced a blackout of 16 minutes at the Polo grounds last night.
- 6:24And tonight, at the end of the first half of the sixth inning, there will be a one-minute
- 6:29blackout.
- 6:29There will be a one-minute pause in the ballgame here and a one-minute blackout at the end
- 6:34of the first half of the sixth.
- 6:35It will be for just one minute and then the ballgame will resume.
- 6:39And remember that is just a trial blackout at the end of the first half of the sixth
- 6:44inning.
- 6:44Friends, we're going to pause now before this ballgame gets underway for a station
- 6:49identification.
- 6:50You're listening to the exclusive presentation of the All-Star Game between the American
- 6:54League and the All-Star Service Team from the big municipal stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 7:00And this is the Coast to Coast Network of the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 7:07This is WGM, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 7:15Friends, we're back here at Cleveland and we're listening now to and we're watching
- 7:18a ceremony of the lowering of the colors.
- 7:20What lets you hear it?
- 7:51The American flag out there to the left of the scoreboard, which was originally raised
- 7:56out there by the Senors, has just been lowered.
- 8:00That ceremony is over with and again this crowd of around 65,000 has stood at attention.
- 8:06The lights are all on here, the umpires who are out down here below us.
- 8:10By the way, our Mutual Broadcasting vantage point here is very splendid.
- 8:17We're in the upper deck.
- 8:18We're just to the left of the home plate.
- 8:20We have a very splendid spot here to look over this field.
- 8:23Here the umpire is coming out onto the field now and the American League team is stationed
- 8:28to our right, which is back of first base, and the service team is down here to our left.
- 8:34We might tell you too that at the real poke in this ballpark from home plate to the end
- 8:38of the right field foul line is 320 feet.
- 8:40To right center is 435.
- 8:43The dead center is really a magnificent poke.
- 8:45If anybody could hit it in there, a 470 feet.
- 8:48The left center field is 435 and down the left field line is 320.
- 8:53So both lines are the same.
- 8:54The left field is 320, the right field is 320, center field is 470, left center is 435,
- 9:01and right center is even a little bit farther.
- 9:03There's a spot back in there with that center field bleacher, has no roof on it, that is 463 feet.
- 9:09This is a huge double deck stadium.
- 9:12It's just a giant place.
- 9:14It's uh, in fact it dwarfs you when you sit in here and look at it.
- 9:17It's a complete double deck circle all the way around except right across in center field
- 9:22where there is a bleacher with no stand that goes right across the entire center field section.
- 9:28The umpires are up here around the home plate now talking to the uh coaches.
- 9:32I see Artie Fletcher up there and Mike Cochran is up there for the service team.
- 9:37The soldiers and sailors are getting off the field and the setting now is just about perfect
- 9:42for this great game here in Cleveland tonight.
- 9:44We've already given you the lineup twice but it's going to be called around to the people here in the stands
- 9:49and for the first three innings in the ball game tonight we're going to listen to Jack Rainey
- 9:53of station WHK in Cleveland.
- 9:56Jack broadcasts all the ball games here in Cleveland.
- 9:58He's familiar with this stadium and I know he's going to give you a splendid picture
- 10:02of the first three innings of this game.
- 10:04So we're just about a minute and a half to game time and I know he has some things that
- 10:07he'd like to tell you so come in Jack Rainey.
- 10:10Bob this is the field in which Bob Seller who is starting for the all-star service team tonight
- 10:15created a record of 18 strikeouts when he pitched against the Detroit Tigers a few years back.
- 10:21It was the second of the first game to double header in the last day of the season
- 10:25when Bob brought that pass ball through to strikeout 18 batters and beat Dizzy Dean's record of 17.
- 10:34Bob had already tied it but went out and hit it.
- 10:38He's already tied it but went out and beat that record.
- 10:42The boys are still around home plate there going over the ground rules and the fans are
- 10:46still coming in.
- 10:48The soldiers and sailors are now marching off the field going up into the left field
- 10:54stand the lower left field stand.
- 10:56They're pointing out towards right field there apparently they want to know just what will
- 11:00happen if a spectator leaps out and grabs that ball down the right field line and they're
- 11:06on the ground rule.
- 11:08In just a moment the American League players the American League is the home team tonight
- 11:14so they're taking the field.
- 11:16The winners of last night's all-star game the American League champions the home team
- 11:22they take the field and the all-star service team will be first at bat.
- 11:30The umpires tonight will be Spurik back on the plate.
- 11:40It'll be Bellofrant at first base, McDonough second and Balik at third base.
- 11:48Now after four and a half innings Spurik will exchange with Balik and Balik will come back
- 11:52to the plate after four and a half innings in this all-star game.
- 11:56Jim Bagby is out on the mound now warming up a big tall right-hander and as Wade Meuters
- 12:03already told you in opening that it was Jim's father who in 1920 the only World Series brought
- 12:11to Cleveland the only pennant and World Series Jim Bagby senior who now makes his home in
- 12:18Atlanta Georgia won 31 games for the Cleveland Indians.
- 12:22I think that Jim Jr. has a little more than his dad he has more than that fastball but
- 12:27is very much on the same order he has a fade away a fade away a knuckleball a fastball
- 12:34and a curve and for you fans naturally we know that a large number of you people listening
- 12:40in wish that you could be present at this great American League all-star service game.
- 12:45However knowing that this could be a physical impossibility the thought occurs to us that
- 12:50you might be interested in aiding this buying cause by sending him the price of a ticket
- 12:54or your seat at the radio.
- 12:56Our seats are $1.35 and $1.60.
- 12:59If you're interested and they send your contribution to the Cleveland Baseball Company
- 13:03one turn you'll see it is added to a combined Army and Navy Relief Fund.
- 13:09Bagby is still warming up while the soldiers and sailors are marching off the field.
- 13:21They can find an array of them out in center field as they're lowering their colors and
- 13:25now out in center field the one group just starting to march off.
- 13:29The infield taking their warm-up practice.
- 13:34It's Rudy York you know playing first base, it's Bobby Dorr at second, it's Rudolf Short,
- 13:41Kenny Keltner playing third base.
- 13:45Williams in left field, Gautam Ajay the Yankee Kipper in center, Tommy Hendrick in right field
- 13:52with Bagby pitching, Rosar matching.
- 14:02The first man up will be Mullin, a left-hand hitter.
- 14:06This boy Mullin played great ball for Detroit when he was with them.
- 14:14And hit 345.
- 14:17So he'll be somewhat of a ball player and Mickey Coxton tonight has a great array of ball players here
- 14:21lined up against the American League champions.
- 14:24Not going to be any pushover for the American Leaguers to beat the all-star service team.
- 14:30It's still warming up as the boys are still marching under the stands.
- 14:36Here's the announcement on the umpires.
- 14:39Wood of the American League back of the plate.
- 14:43Gallifant of the National League at first base.
- 14:46McGowan of the American League at second base.
- 14:51Barlich of the National League at third base.
- 14:59Mullin has a gray uniform on with green socks, white stripes.
- 15:03No number on Mullin's uniform.
- 15:11Last night's ball game, Lou Goodrill leading off, getting that home run.
- 15:16The Cleveland fans got a great kick out of seeing, or hearing rather,
- 15:20Lou Goodrill getting that home run, followed by Rudy Yarks home run in the first inning
- 15:25after Tommy Hendrick had doubled.
- 15:28It was a great ball game and everybody enjoyed it.
- 15:32The fact that they think that the Cleveland boy had something to do with the win
- 15:36has created a lot of interest around in this section.
- 15:40The fans are still coming in. I know the crowd in the left and right wing upstairs.
- 15:44They're starting to fill up, and I would say they're close to 70 or 75,000 fans in this band.
- 15:50The record, you know, is 80,000.
- 15:52Glenn, the Philadelphia Athletics, played the Cleveland Indians here
- 15:58in the first game played in this stadium.
- 16:03Letty Grohl pitched against Mel Harder and defeated Mel Harder 1-0 in a great pitching duel.
- 16:11And it was Mickey Cochran, who is the manager of the All-Star team here tonight,
- 16:16who broke up that ball game with a base hit in the eighth inning.
- 16:24Manager Joe McCarthy has changed his lineup at second base tonight.
- 16:32Also back to the plate.
- 16:35Rose are catching with Bobby Doerr at second.
- 16:40And the ball is right up there in the batting in the American League.
- 16:47All right, the umpire says we better go ahead.
- 16:51The soldier is now lined up against the left field stand marching into the stands.
- 16:55The umpire says we better start.
- 16:57In just a moment we'll be ready to go.
- 16:59There's Rose-Eyre's throw down to Doerr at second base.
- 17:09Jim Bagby, a right-handed pitching for the American champions.
- 17:15Rose-Eyre back to the plate. Jim Bagby gets his signal.
- 17:19Star-C's wind up. Here's the first pitch of the ball game. Here it comes.
- 17:22And it's a hot shot down toward short. Woodrow takes it on the big hop to throw to first.
- 17:25He's out. Woodrow to York on the first ball pitch.
- 17:29One out. Nobody on.
- 17:33And Jenny McCoy of the Philadelphia Athletics, the left-hand hitter up.
- 17:39As a matter of fact, the All-Star team, the first six batters are left-handers.
- 17:44Left-hand hitters. McCoy steps into the batter's box. Jim Bagby now has called time.
- 17:49He wants to get together with Rose-Eyre on the signal.
- 17:53Rose-Eyre is cutting out halfway to the pitcher's mound. They're there talking it over.
- 17:58Jim has plenty of different pitches, you know.
- 18:00He has a very sneak pass when he doesn't take much of a wind up and he blows that fast one through.
- 18:04He has a screwball. He has a knuckleball and a very good curveball.
- 18:09All right. The boys are together. Rose-Eyre comes back to the plate, gets down to give the signal.
- 18:14It's McCoy up with one out. Nobody on the first half of the first inning.
- 18:17No score. Bagby winds up. Here it is.
- 18:20Ball one. A curveball low and inside.
- 18:23Out on McCoy. One and nothing.
- 18:28Bagby gets his signal. He's winding up. Here it is.
- 18:32Ball two. A fastball low and inside on the count is now two and nothing.
- 18:39McCoy is a short, heavy set fellow.
- 18:44Takes a very good cut at the ball. Has plenty of power.
- 18:47Here's the wind up. Here it is.
- 18:49Ball three. Low and inside.
- 18:52A fastball just missed the inside corner and the count is now three and nothing.
- 19:02Here's the wind up. Here it comes.
- 19:05Ball four. Low and inside.
- 19:08And McCoy cuts down the first base.
- 19:11The number eight, Don Padgett of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 19:16Don Padgett of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 19:19A big fellow and I noticed him in batting practice. He takes a terrific cut at that ball.
- 19:23He's a left-hand hitter. Steps into the batter's box. It's McCoy on first base.
- 19:27One out. Bagby takes his stretch. Here it comes.
- 19:31Ball one. A fastball just missed the outside corner.
- 19:39Stewart back in the place and all calling balls and strikes.
- 19:45Bagby gets his signal. Comes up to pitching position.
- 19:48Here's the pitch. Foul. Back to the screen.
- 19:52This boy Padgett had a nice cut at that fast one.
- 19:56Rosar gets a new ball. So Mumphire Stewart rubs it up, walks partly out to the pitcher's mound and tosses it to Bagby.
- 20:04The count is now one and one on Padgett.
- 20:09First half, the first inning, no score. McCoy is on first heading walk.
- 20:13Bagby gets his signal, takes his stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 20:16Foul. Back to the screen and Padgett almost fell down as he swung and foul leoprenov.
- 20:23And the count is now two strikes, one ball. Both fastballs through there.
- 20:30Bagby looks out at the scoreboard to see what the count is. It's two strikes, one ball.
- 20:35Rosar down, giving the signal.
- 20:39Bagby takes his stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 20:43Ball two. That fast one just missed the outside corner.
- 20:47Count is even, two and two.
- 20:54Bagby goes back to the rousin. Bagby steps down the rubber.
- 20:58Takes his stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 21:02And it's a high fly ball. In short, left heel just inside the line.
- 21:06And there it goes. It drops inside the line. And there it goes. McCoy to second base.
- 21:11He rounded second base. The ball drops among Keltner, Boudreaux, and Williams.
- 21:17A high popper just inside the left heel line in short left heel as Boudreaux, Keltner, and Williams race after that ball.
- 21:25McCoy at round of second base. The ball bounded up to Boudreaux and he raced back to second.
- 21:30A single for Padgett.
- 21:38That brings up Cecil Travis, the shortstop, a left-hand hitter. McCoy on second base.
- 21:42Padgett on first. One man out, first half of the first inning, no score. Here's the stretch.
- 21:47Here it comes. Ball one, middle outside.
- 21:52Down on Travis, one and nothing.
- 21:59Service boys are making a good first score in this inning. Here's the stretch.
- 22:04Here it comes. Ball two, low and inside on the count is now two and nothing.
- 22:11Rosar walks out in front of the gate, snaps the ball back to Bagby.
- 22:21Bagby now gets his signal, makes his stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 22:27Ball three, a little outside, a fast ball just missed the outside corner on the count, three and nothing.
- 22:38A great set out here tonight, fans.
- 22:41Stand almost filled. Here's the stretch.
- 22:44Here it comes. Ball.
- 22:48Just a moment.
- 22:52A ball.
- 22:57There's a warm-up pitcher down in right field.
- 23:02On that pitch, which was inside, Saddle stood there for a moment.
- 23:06Ball four on the base of the field.
- 23:10That brings up Grape.
- 23:14Right fielder, left-hand hitter, three on, one off. Here's the windup.
- 23:18Ball one, a third ball low. Count on Grape, one and nothing.
- 23:22Here's the picture, fans. McCoy on third base, Paget on second.

- 23:57Ball three, outside, a fast ball.
- 24:02And the count, three and nothing, with three on and one out. First half, the first inning, no score.
- 24:06Bagby winds up.
- 24:08Here it is. Fast ball, fast ball left down in the alley.
- 24:13Crowd cheers, and Bagby gets up and over. Three and one on the count.
- 24:18Bagby starts his windup. Here it comes.
- 24:21Take two, Paul. Another fast ball, really high through the center.
- 24:25Count is now three and two. McCoy on third.
- 24:29Paget on second.
- 24:31Travis on first, one out.
- 24:34Bagby lining up. Here it comes.
- 24:37And he's caught.
- 24:39And back far, he high.
- 24:42Grape called out on strikes, and that's nice picking by Jim Bagby after a count of three and nothing.
- 24:47Johnny Sturm of the New York Yankees.
- 24:51Johnny Sturm of the New York Yankees, the left-hand hitter up.
- 24:55Johnny and all have the most important of having a finger.
- 24:58Advocated here a short time ago. Bagby winds up. Here it is.
- 25:01Now, bound and back to the fans.
- 25:05Johnny Sturm, who played first base for the Yankees before ending the service.
- 25:09The left-hand hitter up.
- 25:11One of the first ball-picks, foul it off.
- 25:13Now, Luzar gets a new ball, walks partly up the pitch, and mounts it.
- 25:16And the ball is in the basket.
- 25:18And the ball is in the basket.
- 25:20One of the first ball-picks, foul it off. Now, Luzar gets a new ball, walks partly up the pitch, and mounts it.
- 25:25Something to Jim Bagby, crossing the ball, and comes back with position, back in the plate.
- 25:29It's the first half, the first inning, and Ole's. No slower.
- 25:32Penny McCoy is down third base.
- 25:34Peska down second, and Travis down first. Two out.
- 25:37Bagby gets his finger, winds up. Here it is.
- 25:40Comes to ground for all the fouls. First base, bang.
- 25:42Comber comes up and fouls all the first. He's out.
- 25:45And the ball is to be watched on the high bounder down the third base line. He's carrying it by.
- 25:52And maddening, no runs.
- 25:57Run hit.
- 25:59And two bases on foul. Three men left on bases.
- 26:04Now we go to the last half of the first inning. Debo Driller coming up to bat. Getting a great man.

- 58:26DiMaggio is moving in under it and takes it for the second out.
- 58:33Two men out, nobody on, and Cecil Travis coming up.
- 58:39Travis the first time up, walks.
- 58:42Two put outs for Joe DiMaggio in this inning.
- 58:46Travis the left-hand hitter steps into the batter's box.
- 58:50First half, the third inning, two outs, nobody on.
- 58:54American League leading three to nothing.
- 58:56Here's the pitch, ball one, outside.
- 59:00The old knuckleball missed the outside corner.
- 59:07Dagby gets his signal, starts, he's wind up.
- 59:09Here's the pitch.
- 59:11That's a line drive down the left field line.
- 59:13It's a base hit rolling off of the wall.
- 59:15It bounce off the wall, there goes Travis around first base.
- 59:17Williams comes up with the ball and shoots it in to Rizzuto.
- 59:21In short left field he tosses it in to Keltner.
- 59:26A double for Travis, a line drive just inside the left field line out to the stands.
- 59:42Well that brings up race, the red fielder, the first time up, struck out.
- 59:45He's left-hand hitter, two outs, Travis down second.
- 59:48Dagby steps down the rubber, takes his stretch.
- 59:51Here's the pitch.
- 59:52That's a ground ball back to the box.
- 59:54Dagby leaps up, there's it with one hand to toss the first, he's out.
- 59:58Dagby, New York, on a high bounder, the pitch is bound.
- 1:00:07Now we go to the last half, the third inning.
- 1:00:09Before the third inning starts we might pause for station identification.
- 1:00:14This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:00:21This is WGN with the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 1:00:28Well here we are back at the stadium in Cleveland where the All-Star Service team
- 1:00:34is playing the champions of the American League.
- 1:00:36There's the champion American League team, and we're going into the last half,
- 1:00:40the third inning with the American Leaguers leading 3-0.
- 1:00:44And it's Tommy Hendricks leading off.
- 1:00:46Rigney on the mound, white-hander winds up, here it comes,
- 1:00:49that's a foul, a drive down the left field line into the stands.
- 1:00:54Down on Tommy Hendricks, one strike.
- 1:00:56Tommy Hendricks, his first time up.
- 1:00:58Bob Teller on the mound, slashed the singles through the box.
- 1:01:04He's up for his second trip, count one strike.
- 1:01:07Rigney, a right-hander on the mound, put like back of the plate.
- 1:01:10Rigney winds up, here it comes.
- 1:01:12Ball one, little outspout, a fast ball.
- 1:01:17Count is even on Tommy Hendricks.
- 1:01:19Rigney gets his signal, winds up, here it is.
- 1:01:22Ball two, little outspout on the count, is now two balls, one strike.
- 1:01:28Last half, the third inning with the American Leaguers leading 3-0.
- 1:01:33Rigney winds up, here it comes.
- 1:01:36Ball three, a fast ball just missed the outside corner.
- 1:01:39Three and one is a count.
- 1:01:46American Leaguers making two runs from the first inning, one on the second.
- 1:01:49Rigney winds up, here it is.
- 1:01:51Ball four, low and inside, Hendrick walks.
- 1:02:00And brings up Ed Williams, a left-hander, his first time up walk.
- 1:02:04He's a left-hand hitter.
- 1:02:07He steps into the batter's box, Hendrick on first base, nobody out.
- 1:02:12Rigney takes his stretch, here's the pitch.
- 1:02:15Ball low, a curve ball on the count on Williams, one and nothing.
- 1:02:22Ed keeps talking to the catcher when he's up there.
- 1:02:25He throws the ball back to the pitcher.
- 1:02:27Rigney takes his stretch, here's the pitch.
- 1:02:30Ball two, it's high.
- 1:02:32And the count is now two and nothing.
- 1:02:34Now Rigney walks part way in to have a talk with Frankie Pitlak.
- 1:02:40Frankie tossing the ball and starts back to his position, back of the plate.
- 1:02:49All right, we're back in position now, Williams up, left-hand hitter.
- 1:02:52Hendrick on first, nobody out.
- 1:02:55Rigney takes his stretch, here's the pitch.
- 1:02:58Ball three, it's low.
- 1:03:01And the count is now three and nothing.
- 1:03:12Here's the stretch, here it comes.
- 1:03:15Ball four, high and outside.
- 1:03:17Williams also walks and Tommy Hendrick goes to second.
- 1:03:25Well, that's two bases on balls and we have runners on first and second, nobody out.
- 1:03:29Last half of third inning, the American Leaguers leading by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:03:35And Joe DiMaggio comes up.
- 1:03:37Joe, the first time up, flaps the single over second base, a right-hand hitter.
- 1:03:42Depths into the batter's box.
- 1:03:49Rigney comes up to pitching position, here's the pitch.
- 1:03:53Ball one, low.
- 1:03:55Fast ball on the count and DiMaggio one and nothing.
- 1:04:02Pitlak down, giving that signal.
- 1:04:04Rigney takes his stretch, here it is.
- 1:04:07Ball two, it's inside.
- 1:04:11Rigney's a little dissatisfied that he can't get that ball over the plate.
- 1:04:15Frankie Pitlak rubs the ball up well and toss it back to Rigney.
- 1:04:24Joe DiMaggio up, right-hand hitter that counts two balls, no strikes.
- 1:04:27Hendrick on second, you know, Williams on first, nobody out.
- 1:04:29Here's the stretch, here it comes.
- 1:04:31And it's a high foul ball down the third base line.
- 1:04:35Henry's coming over under it, waiting for it, and takes it.
- 1:04:38Back of third base, a high foul from DiMaggio's fast.
- 1:04:47One out.
- 1:04:53And Rudy Yark is up.
- 1:04:54Yark, the first time up, so deep to grace, almost on the track in right center field.
- 1:05:03It's up for a second tip.
- 1:05:05In the center of the batter's box, Rigney takes his stretch, here's the pitch.
- 1:05:08That's a ground ball going down towards deep short.
- 1:05:10Travis comes up with the ball, close to second.
- 1:05:12He's out of second to throw to first.
- 1:05:13Yark keeps it out, breaking up that double play.
- 1:05:18And Hendrick moves to third.
- 1:05:20Yark hit a ground ball down to deep short.
- 1:05:23Travis made a beautiful stop on that ball, and deep short was sliding when he tossed the ball to McCoy.
- 1:05:29Washington Williams is second, but before the first, it's too late to double Yark.
- 1:05:32Hendrick going to third.
- 1:05:34So it's two men out and Bobby Dorup.
- 1:05:38Last half of the third inning.
- 1:05:42Hendrick on third base, Yark on first and two out.
- 1:05:46Rigney, a right-hander, takes his stretch.
- 1:05:48Here's the pitch.
- 1:05:49Ball one, a curve ball over, but low.
- 1:05:52Down on Bobby Dorup, one and nothing.
- 1:06:01That lag, down giving a signal, Rigney takes his stretch, here it comes.
- 1:06:04Strike, swinging, a curve ball low and outside.
- 1:06:06Door is swung and missed.
- 1:06:07The count is even, one and one.
- 1:06:13American Leaguers leading three to nothing, last of the third inning.
- 1:06:18Hendrick on third, Williams on first.
- 1:06:20Here's a rather Yark on first.
- 1:06:22Here's the pitch, but it's a high foul coming back into the upper stand.
- 1:06:27It's at the top of the stand and bounce down into the lower boxes.
- 1:06:32Very solemn that a foul ball hits up that high.
- 1:06:35That hit right by the lights and bounded down into the boxes,
- 1:06:38and the count on Bobby Dorup is now two strikes and one ball.
- 1:06:45Rigney standing out on the rubber, looking for that signal.
- 1:06:49Comes up to pitching position.
- 1:06:51Here's the pitch, and it's a fly ball going off the left field line,
- 1:06:55and here comes that left fielder and makes the catch.
- 1:06:58In left field, Padgett coming over fast to make that catch,
- 1:07:02and left field, re-pouring the side.
- 1:07:06And now we go into the first half, the fourth inning.
- 1:07:10The American League team leading three to nothing.
- 1:07:15The Americans making two runs for first inning and one in the second.
- 1:07:20And now we turn you over to a fellow who was a great pitcher for the New York Yankees a few years ago
- 1:07:28and is now the baseball broadcaster in Cincinnati of station WKRC, Wade Hoyt.
- 1:07:37Thank you, Jack, and we're going into the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:07:46Sid Hudson, Sid Hudson of the Washington Senators, is coming into pitch for the All-Stars.
- 1:07:51Sid is a fastball pitcher, a right-hander, and a youngster.
- 1:07:55He has great possibilities in this league of becoming one of the great stars.
- 1:08:00He'll be out there on the mound, big, tall, right-handed, very solid, very compact, very strong.
- 1:08:07Fastball pitcher, pitched in an All-Star game a couple of years ago.
- 1:08:14And the first batter up for the Army Navy will be Johnny Stern, a left-handed hitter, formerly of the New York Yankees,
- 1:08:22and a boy who in his first few weeks in Army training got in conflict with a tractor
- 1:08:29and had the index finger of his right hand cut off near the top, not the entire finger, however,
- 1:08:36told me this morning that it was a little bit tender.
- 1:08:41It doesn't happen to be on its throwing hand, however, it's on his receiving hand,
- 1:08:45and he must tape the end of that finger up now.
- 1:08:48He's a left-handed thrower, of course.
- 1:08:51Throws our whips to ball down to second base, draw over to Rizzuto, Rizzuto over to Kelter,
- 1:08:57and back to the pitcher, Sid Hudson, and we're ready to go on the first half of the fourth inning.
- 1:09:01Johnny Stern, Stern stepping up there, hitting left-handed, wearing a brown cap,
- 1:09:09a dark gray uniform with brown numerals on it, 22 on his back, Hudson ready for the first pitch.
- 1:09:14It's inside for ball one.
- 1:09:17Rozar takes his glove off and rubs the ball up, throws it back to Hudson.
- 1:09:20Hudson's digging a little hole on the mound, braces himself with his right foot forward, his left foot back,
- 1:09:26studies Rozar as he crouches down, watches his catcher as he gives a sign.
- 1:09:30Rozar holding that target behind the home plate as Hudson winds around his head, the body pivots, a throw,
- 1:09:35and the ball is swung on and missed for strike one, one and one.
- 1:09:44Johnny Stern backs out of the batter's box, and the American League All-Stars are playing him very normally.
- 1:09:49DiMaggio straight in center field, Williams in direct left field, and Tommy Henrich direct in right field.
- 1:09:56They're not playing him so deep either. Hudson around his head, the body pivots, a step, and a throw,
- 1:10:01and the ball is low, a curve ball which misses for ball two, two and one.
- 1:10:07Hudson has those little nervous gestures on the mound, digs a little hole every time, smooths the dirt back to cover up.
- 1:10:14To gain his purchase, he digs in with his spikes, he winds once around his head, he pivots, throws,
- 1:10:19and Stern takes outside for ball three, and the count goes to three and one,
- 1:10:23and the crowd senses a little bit of drama right here.
- 1:10:27I know that they're all pulling for this service team to get started.
- 1:10:30Hudson now in the first inning with three on base and one out when Joe Grace took the third strike.
- 1:10:37I know that all the fans here and all the fans around the country were sort of pulling for this service team to get started.
- 1:10:42Hudson now around his head with three and one, the pitch is inside for ball four.
- 1:10:49And Johnny Stern jogs down the first base, rounds the bag, and there's old Sergeant Hank Gowdy coaching down at first,
- 1:10:55and big Lieutenant George Earnshaw, formerly of the Philadelphia Athletics, coaching at third.
- 1:11:05So Sid Hudson has walked the first man to face him, Johnny Stern.
- 1:11:09That brings up Ernie Andre of Louisville who had a single in this first time at bat, batting right-handed,
- 1:11:14goes the bat well back, and leans back as a curve ball snaps over the plate for strike one,
- 1:11:20and the ball is shot back from Rosada Hudson.
- 1:11:24Hudson on the mound appears a little bit self-conscious pitching in this very important game,
- 1:11:28and he comes to his box stance, hands across his chest, watches his runner, delivers to the plate,
- 1:11:32and the ball is swung on, hits down to Rizzuto at shortstop, really quickly,
- 1:11:35throw it over to Dorr and Dorr over to Rudiork, and there's a double play.
- 1:11:40Ernie Andre hits the ball down to the shortstop and Rizzuto with one fell swoop in one motion,
- 1:11:45pick the ball up, relay it to Bobby Dorr, Dorr pivoted, and through to Rudiork for a double play.
- 1:11:53And then to Pitlock who receives a nice hand, used to catch here in Cleveland,
- 1:11:56also for the Boston Red Sox is up there batting right-handed.
- 1:12:01Hudson around his head once, he steps far, delivers, and Pitlock swings very late on a ball
- 1:12:08that was already by him for strike one.
- 1:12:16Ball is back in his hand and he dangles it, he dangles his arm down by his side,
- 1:12:19Hudson winds once, very loose wrist, throws, a curved ball bounces in the dirt,
- 1:12:24and Rozar catches it with his glove hand, just backhands it to stop it from going back to the screen for ball one, one and one.
- 1:12:35Hudson takes a hitch at his belt, just pulls up his trousers a bit, leans forward to take the sign,
- 1:12:40now he's around his head, in he comes, and the ball breaks low, a curved ball for ball two, two and one.
- 1:12:48The ball is lobbed back from Rozar to Hudson.
- 1:12:51Robby Dore out at short, out at second base has his glove off,
- 1:12:55Rizzuto has his glove off as they wipe their hands on their trousers.
- 1:12:58Now they're down on their knees watching Hudson wind up with the count, two balls, one strike.
- 1:13:02He steps and throws and it's fouled right up by our broadcasting booth,
- 1:13:06and a young lady over here to the left of us puts out her hands in an attempt to catch it.
- 1:13:12The crowd sort of gives her a cheer as she reaches out for the ball, and the count goes to two and two, two strikes and two balls.
- 1:13:21Hudson with a new ball rubs it up, touches the rosin bag, grinds it between his bare hands to take the gloves off it,
- 1:13:27and he comes back in the pitching rub, he drops his left foot back to wind up the step and the throw,
- 1:13:31and it's outside, a curved ball misses outside for ball three, and the count is run for three and two.
- 1:13:39And one of the American League All-Stars is dashing down on the both ends.
- 1:13:44Hudson leans forward as he starts his wind up.
- 1:13:47He cuts a fast ball loose and it's hit slowly on the ground to the third baseman,
- 1:13:50and Ken Keltman comes up with the ball, throws it on the hand over the first base,
- 1:13:54and Rudy York takes it with his glove hands, a one-hand catch for the third out.
- 1:14:01And so for the Army Navy, in the first half of the fourth inning there were no runs, no hits, and no one left on base.
- 1:14:08And in four turns at that, the Army Navy have had no runs, three hits and five men left on base,
- 1:14:14and there has not been an error made by either team so far in this ball game.
- 1:14:21And we know fans naturally, we know that a large number of you people listening wish you could be present at this great American All-Stars service team game.
- 1:14:29However, knowing that could be a physical impossibility, the thought occurs to us that you might be interested in
- 1:14:35siding in with this fine cause by sending in the price of a ticket for your seat at the radio.
- 1:14:41Now these seats are $1.25 and $1.60, and if you are interested, you may send your contribution to the Cleveland Baseball Company,
- 1:14:49who in turn will see that it is added to the combined Army and Navy relief funds.
- 1:14:54And believe me, it's a great cause, and you'll never miss that little clip-in that you send in for these boys.
- 1:15:01We're going into the last half of the fourth inning, and the first man to bat for the American League All-Stars will be Kenny Cheltener,
- 1:15:07facing that sterling right-hander, Johnny Rigney, formerly of the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:15:12Rigney's a big tall, lean right-hander and a very good change of pace pitcher.
- 1:15:16The first ball is pitched right over the outside corner, but strike one right into the glove, right into the glove of Frankie Pitlock.
- 1:15:23Pitlock holds that target, Rigney around his head, and the ball is hit very hard into left field,
- 1:15:28and there comes Don Padgett into foul territory across the left field foul line, way outside of bleachers to take it for the first out.
- 1:15:37Don Padgett of the all-service team made a very nice catch coming way across from left field, across the left field foul line, to make that putout.
- 1:15:45One up, one away for the American League All-Stars.
- 1:15:49Now we have Buddy Rozar, who's single in the second inning, to drive in Kenny Cheltener,
- 1:15:56stepping in there, the anti-catcher, and he would be a first-ring catcher on any other team.
- 1:16:01The first pitch by Rigney is fouled off over by the All-Star bench,
- 1:16:06and Johnny Stern goes across the foul line over past the coaches' box to take it for the second out.
- 1:16:11And that gale you hear is a ball that was thrown from Stern down the shortstop, and it gets by him, and the umpire on third base,
- 1:16:22and Al Barley picked the ball up and made a great stop, and the fans are giving the umpire a cheer.
- 1:16:26Well, there are two out in the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:16:31I believe we're going to have a pinch hitter.
- 1:16:36We'll see who this is in just a moment.
- 1:16:38No, this is Sid Hudson coming up to bat himself.
- 1:16:43Sid Hudson of the Washington Senators, and he takes a terrific swing at the first fastball thrown by Rigney and slices right over toward the All-Star bench.
- 1:16:51That is, the American League All-Star benchman bounced off the boxers,
- 1:16:55power them back by Phil Rizzuto, who is coming up next, and Phil picked it up and threw it back to the ball boy.
- 1:17:00A new ball is out there in Rigney's hands.
- 1:17:02He takes a long line up the step and the throw, and Hudson hits it down on the ground to Rizzuto, to the shortstop,
- 1:17:09and Travis throws them out easily at first base, and there are the three outs.
- 1:17:14Rigney pitched a very easy inning that time, and there were no runs, no hits, no one left on base.
- 1:17:20But the American League All-Star is the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:17:27We go into the first half of the fifth, and the first man up will be the pitcher, supposedly, Rigney.
- 1:17:36However, we can't tell in this ball game because there may be pinch hitters at any time.
- 1:17:42This has been a very good ball game so far, and I could see when Bobby Feller was pitching in the first inning,
- 1:17:48in the second inning, he spent playing right field.
- 1:17:58And Stan Spence of the Washington Senators, a very fine-looking prospect for the American League,
- 1:18:04also of the Washington Senators, is playing right field for the American Leaguers.
- 1:18:11And we were saying, Bobby Feller in the early innings, in the first and second innings, came home and came to Cleveland,
- 1:18:17and he seemed as though he was just a bit self-conscious appearing before his hometown fans once again.
- 1:18:22He was trying so hard to please and so hard to make good here this evening,
- 1:18:26he just reared back and let everything go with every bit of ounce of strength in his body, and he just didn't get away with it.
- 1:18:34However, you can see that Bobby hasn't been pitching regularly.
- 1:18:37He's been pitching once or twice, well, we'll say about every two weeks,
- 1:18:41and of course that is not enough to face such a team as these American League stars present this evening.
- 1:18:48However, Hudson on the mound, as Rigney's at bat, first man up,
- 1:18:54Hudson delivers a fastball higher across his eyes and Rigney swings and misses for a strike one.
- 1:19:00The ball is shot right back, rose out of Hudson.
- 1:19:04Hudson drops that left foot back, he braces himself, digs in the spikes, he winds,
- 1:19:08comes sidearm with a fastball and it misses about six inches outside for ball one, one and one.
- 1:19:17Oh, Johnny Rigney, one of the best change of pace pitchers in the big leagues, hitting.
- 1:19:22Sid Hudson, the youngster, pitching.
- 1:19:24A fastball higher across his letters and Rigney swings and misses for strike two,
- 1:19:29and Hudson really popped that ball right through there.
- 1:19:32Rigney swung late, didn't really have a chance to hit that one.
- 1:19:39Hudson taking a sign as Rose R sits down behind the bat and holds that glove over the outside corner.
- 1:19:44Hudson pitches for the target and the ball is fouled off back into the right field section of the grand stand for the same count,
- 1:19:51two strikes and one ball.
- 1:19:59A new ball is thrown out and Hudson rubs it up in his bare hands.
- 1:20:03He takes a little hole in the mound, he stands there watching his catcher, Buddy Rosa, who sits down, crouches low,
- 1:20:08holds that glove on the outside corner, Hudson winds, throws and the curve is hit on a bound down to Phil Rizzuto
- 1:20:15and makes a hurried throw with a first base and Rudy York kicks it out of the dirt with one hand
- 1:20:19and makes the putoff for the first out, first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:20:28He brings up Patty Mullin, who hit.345 for Detroit last year, one of the better batters of the American League.
- 1:20:36Steps in there hitting left-handed.
- 1:20:39The first time at bat he hit after the short drop, the second time he hit a line drive in the right field.
- 1:20:43He's up there for the third time and takes the first ball outside for ball one as Hudson was wired with a curve.
- 1:20:51Keltner at third is playing in for a bunt, protecting Rizzuto over a round second.
- 1:20:56Hudson's ball is switched over to it by first.
- 1:20:58The ball is pitched by Hudson and foul right above it for strike one and the count goes to one strike and one ball.
- 1:21:04And there's one out.
- 1:21:08First half of the fifth inning and the score, three to nothing, three to nothing in favor of the American Leaguers.
- 1:21:18Hudson over his head once more.
- 1:21:20Steps throws a slow ball and it's a little bit high, a slow curve which broke high and Mullin backed away from the plate to take it.
- 1:21:27He waves that bat from his left hand to his right, hitting left-handed.
- 1:21:32Counts two balls, one strike.
- 1:21:34Hudson winds.
- 1:21:36Next pitch is a fastball, hits down right down to the second baseman Bobby Dore,
- 1:21:40feels it on a third hop, throws to Rudy York, and he's out.
- 1:21:44The ball is whipped around the American League infield.
- 1:21:50And up comes Benny McCoy, little Benny McCoy hitting left-handed, whom Connie Mack gave $45,000 to to sign a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 1:21:59Neat piece of change.
- 1:22:01Good little ball player holding the bat well back as Hudson delivers the first slow curve and McCoy hits on top of it but misses for strike one.
- 1:22:10The game is moving right along.
- 1:22:12The American Leaguers are playing McCoy sort of around a right field because they know him.
- 1:22:17Hudson is around his head once more, steps, throws, and the ball is pitched outside for ball one.
- 1:22:23One and one.
- 1:22:27Every time Buddy Rozar throws the ball back to Sid Hudson, the pitcher, he takes his glove off,
- 1:22:32holds it under his left arm, and rubs the baseball up to take the bluffs off it.
- 1:22:35He puts his glove on and dangles that long right arm along the seams of his trousers.
- 1:22:39He's around his head now, he steps and throws, and the ball is hit solidly down to Bobby Dore out on the grass.
- 1:22:45And right field and Dore makes a sensational play going over by first base, out on the grass to take that ground ball and throw Benny McCoy out at first base.
- 1:22:56So the first half of the fifth inning ends with the Army-Navy having no runs, no hits, and no one left on base.
- 1:23:03In the five turns of bats, Mickey Cochran's all-service crew have had no runs, three hits, and five men left on base.
- 1:23:12And it's been a very good ball game for the reason that there have been no misplays in this contest.
- 1:23:16There have been no errors by either side.
- 1:23:22We went to the last half of the fifth inning and Johnny Rigney's still on the mound for the all-service team.
- 1:23:30The 85-season Navy band, Great Lakes Band, playing down on the left-hand side of the grandstand.
- 1:23:36Perhaps you can hear them through our microphone.
- 1:23:38All just the right of the Salem Capcom.
- 1:23:41The field presents a very funny picture.
- 1:23:43The band almost built its capacity.
- 1:23:46If any of you fans have ever been in the Yankee Stadium, you might get sort of a pop-out photography picture of this stadium here in Cleveland
- 1:23:54because it resembles the Yankee Stadium, although it's not triple-deck.
- 1:23:57Just a double-deck stand, but both the left wing of the grandstand and the right wing run way around into right and left field.
- 1:24:05...mumpires, Barley of the National League behind the plate, McDonnell of the American League on first base,
- 1:24:15Ballastant of the National League on second base, Stewart of the American League on first base.
- 1:24:24You probably have heard the public address system announce the change in umpires as is the custom after a four-and-a-half inning.
- 1:24:31And Al Bollock of the National League is going to umpire behind the home plate.
- 1:24:35Bill McGowan of the American League is going out to first base.
- 1:24:39Lee Balenfant of the National League is umpiring at second base.
- 1:24:42And Stewart of the American League, who was umpiring balls and strikes at third,
- 1:24:46Rigney around his head to Rizuto, and Rizuto dumps a bunch down his third base foul line.
- 1:24:50Rigney overfields it fast, and the throw to first base is very thick, and he's out on a great sensational play by the pitcher,
- 1:24:57Johnny Rigney, who came in over by the third base foul line,
- 1:25:01fielded that ball a bunch by Johnny Rizuto with one hand, rather Phil Rizuto,
- 1:25:05with one hand and quickly from an underhand throwing position, threw over to first base, and retired Rizuto.
- 1:25:14That looked almost like a perfect front.
- 1:25:17That was Rizuto's first time at bat and brings up Stan Spence,
- 1:25:21the left-handed batter of the Washington Center.
- 1:25:23This is an outfielder.
- 1:25:25And Bollock, who never fails to entertain his spectators,
- 1:25:28called a strike one on Stan Spence with a loud and vociferous cry.
- 1:25:33Strike two as he waved dramatically like John Barrymore behind the home plate,
- 1:25:39and he's really giving it to the fans, and the fans are enjoying it,
- 1:25:42as Rigney's around his head again and throws a slow curve which is fouled off down into the bullpen of the service team.
- 1:25:49The count remains, two strikes and one ball, with one out,
- 1:25:53the last half of the fifth inning and the All-American League is leading three to nothing.
- 1:25:57Rigney's taking the sign from his catcher, Frankie Tedlock.
- 1:26:01Tedlock holds the glove, and the pitch is made, but it's fouled off into the upper deck for the same count of two strikes and no ball.
- 1:26:10Really, this Al Bollock behind the home plate is really doing a job of umpiring.
- 1:26:15He's giving more justice down there than, well, as they say, WC Field.
- 1:26:20Stan Spence, a great outfielder for the Washington Senators, hitting left-handed with a count, two strikes, no balls, as Rigney pitches,
- 1:26:27and the ball is spliced down by first base, down by third base,
- 1:26:31and Rigney going out after the ball, attempted to pick it up one-handed to the right of the mound,
- 1:26:36looked at his runner, but took his eyes off the runner and fumbled the ball for the first error of the ball game.
- 1:26:45Now I see that the official scorer over there has given Stan Spence a hit instead of giving Rigney an error.
- 1:26:52So there is a hit for Stan Spence.
- 1:27:00The next ball pitched by Rigney to the splendid splinter of the Boston Red Sox, Ted Williams, is down and side for ball one.
- 1:27:08One and nothing.
- 1:27:10Spence on first base.
- 1:27:13He's got his chest in his box, fancy steps, and the curve is over for strike one.
- 1:27:18One and one as Bollock said, oh boy, strike one.
- 1:27:24Williams batting left-handed, and the old Teddy has just batted in 80 runs this year with 18 homers to his credit in the American League
- 1:27:31and leads the league in batting.
- 1:27:34And the ball is outside for ball two.
- 1:27:38Rigney doesn't take a bit of time between pitches.
- 1:27:42Just as soon as Frankie Pitlock gives him the pitching signal, he comes right to his chest and throws.
- 1:27:47So there's Stan Spence on first base, Williams a hitter, and he takes ball three low and inside, and he's danced away from the plate on that one.
- 1:27:56The count goes to three balls and one strike with Spence on first base, one out, the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:28:02and the All-American League is leading three to nothing.
- 1:28:05Williams up there looking for that triple.
- 1:28:07He takes it outside for ball four.
- 1:28:12And Spence goes to second base.
- 1:28:18Williams goes to first base.
- 1:28:21And that's the third base on balls given up by Johnny Rigney in this ball game.
- 1:28:27And brings up the Joel team, Joel Demantrio of the New York Yankees, who has one hit in two times at bat this evening.
- 1:28:33He had two hits in an all-star game in New York last evening.
- 1:28:36He has one out of two tonight.
- 1:28:38Hitting right-handed, feet spread well apart, bat well back.
- 1:28:41Rigney pitches and Joe takes a low curve outside.
- 1:28:45Frankie Piplock had a skip outside of the plate to take that one.
- 1:28:49Rigney has the ball back in his hands and he's looking at his outfield.
- 1:28:53And Padgett in left field is playing pretty well around toward the foul line.
- 1:28:57Mullerman center over toward left and the pitch is made and Demantrio hits the rifle to balls down at Andre.
- 1:29:02Andre over to McCoy. McCoy over to first base.
- 1:29:05And Stern takes it for a double play as Joel Demantrio hits into a double play to end the fifth inning.
- 1:29:14Andre, the third baseman.
- 1:29:16Andre, the third baseman to Benny McCoy at second base over to Johnny Stern.
- 1:29:22And we have paused momentarily for station identification.
- 1:29:27And this is a mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:29:33WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 1:29:41Going into the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:29:43Sid Hudson still on the mound for the American League All-Stars.
- 1:29:47Hank Gowdy walking down there to first base.
- 1:29:49And the first batter will be for the all-service team will be Don Padgett, formerly of the St. Louis Cardinals and lately of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 1:29:57Padgett left the Brooklyn Dodgers early this spring to join the Navy.
- 1:30:01He's a power hitter, a fairly good hitter to left field, tremendous power to right field.
- 1:30:07He's sort of a convertible ball player, one who can play the outfield and also catch.
- 1:30:11Down at St. Louis they use him a good deal as a catcher.
- 1:30:15However, he prefers to play the outfield.
- 1:30:17And of course, he's gotten his wish since he joined the Navy.
- 1:30:19He's playing in left field for the all-service team tonight.
- 1:30:22A left-handed batter, power hitter, he had a single the first time up and flew out to Joel Demantrio in center field the second time up.
- 1:30:30He's up there now in the leading off, the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:30:33His birdie turns to the plate, crouching low, watching Sid Hudson as he stops his windup.
- 1:30:39Hudson's first delivery is, bounces into the plate, and Buddy Rozar takes it on a pick up, hands it back to Al Bollock, who looks the ball over, then throws it back to Sid Hudson.
- 1:30:51And Phil Rizzuto at shortstop, big as Don Padgett as a right field hitter, is playing him way around toward second base.
- 1:30:58Sheltner playing him way out of position at third, around toward second, too.
- 1:31:02The ball is hit right back on a high hop to Sid Hudson in the pitcher's box, who throws it over to Rudy York for the first out.
- 1:31:09If that ball had gotten over the head of Sid Hudson, it might have continued on into center field for a base hit, and Sid Hudson was forced to jump very high to take it in his glove hand.
- 1:31:19However, this one up, one away for the all-service team, the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:31:26Cecil Travis, who has a base on balls and a double to his credit, is up there now for the second man.
- 1:31:32Hudson around his head, pitches inside to Travis for ball one.
- 1:31:36And of course, Travis used to be a teammate of Sid Hudson down there in Washington, so the boys know each other very well, and of course, Sid Hudson knows that Travis is a great ball player.
- 1:31:46Hudson around his head, delivers a slow curve right over the outside corner of the plate, just rough over there nicely for strike one.
- 1:31:54And it's a pleasure to watch Buddy Rojas down behind the bat as he shifts around, first inside, then outside, and holds that glove for his pitchers.
- 1:32:02Now he's holding the target.
- 1:32:03Sid Hudson throws another slow curve, and it's a line drive hit right into the hands of Ken Keltner at third base.
- 1:32:10A solid smash right into the glove hands of Ken Keltner at third base for the second out.
- 1:32:16Travis really caught a hold of that one. They didn't throw him any on the ball.
- 1:32:19He really laid the meat of the bat on it.
- 1:32:22However, it was right at somebody.
- 1:32:24It brings up Joe Grace, a left-handed hitter, formerly of the St. Louis Browns, who struck out once and hit back to the pitcher once.
- 1:32:30However, he's a good hitter.
- 1:32:32Hudson delivers, and Grace leaps high over the ball like a little girl playing jacks to get out of the way of it for ball one, one-and-nothing.
- 1:32:44Hudson around his head, steps, slow curve is over for strike one, one-and-one.
- 1:32:51The game is moving very swiftly.
- 1:32:55Joe Grace swinging left-handed, chokes up a little on the bat, spreads his feet, watches his pitchers.
- 1:33:00Ball and a strike can give it gestures and waves and dances around there, an Indian war dance.
- 1:33:06The next pitch is hit hard out into left field, and it just misses foul for about five feet, and the company names two strikes and one ball.
- 1:33:17First that ball was hit down along the left field foul line in fair territory, served as a last minute and just went foul about five or ten feet.
- 1:33:26Teddy Williams was over there very fast after the ball, and I imagine if the ball had been fair, Teddy Williams would have caught it.
- 1:33:33So Joe Grace must come back to the plate and hit over again.
- 1:33:37Hudson taking the sign from Buddy Rozar, he winds around his head once, the step, the throw, and the curve ball which swings around the plate for ball two, two-and-two.
- 1:33:48Two out, first half of the sixth inning, and the All-American leaders, All-American leaders leading three-and-nothing.
- 1:33:57Hudson around his head, throws, and the ball is hit foul down the third base foul line for the same count,
- 1:34:04and he strikes two balls as Big George Earnshaw feels it and throws it back into the pitcher.
- 1:34:09That's baseball ethics, of course.
- 1:34:14Hudson rubs the ball up, blows in his pitching hands, takes the sign from Buddy Rozar.
- 1:34:19Rozar holding that target low outside as Hudson comes down low for ball three.
- 1:34:27Count is three-and-two on Joe Grace, third man up for the all-service team, first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:34:36Big Sid Hudson on the mound, winds, steps, then throws, and the ball is hit foul in the air over by the all-service fence.
- 1:34:44Delfin can go right by the bench and makes a great putout for the third out, and Joe Grace pops up.
- 1:34:53So for the all-service team, the team hit the start of the sixth inning.
- 1:34:58There were no runs, no hits, no one left on base.
- 1:35:03And in six turns and passes, the all-service team has had no runs, three hits, and five men left on base.
- 1:35:13There's not been an error made by either team here so far this evening.
- 1:35:17The team ball game, the ball game has been very fast, and just at the moment we're going to have a one-minute back out,
- 1:35:26which is a custom here in Cleveland.
- 1:35:28It's just a trial back out, however.
- 1:35:32When we get the trial back out, the lights of the park will be turned out.
- 1:35:37There will be no smoking or lighted matches. We'll all sit here and watch the effects.
- 1:35:49The field is very down. All the ball players have left the field.
- 1:35:52There is not a toll on the playing field except the players' gloves.
- 1:36:04There go the lights, and now the park is totally blacked out.
- 1:36:09You can't see a cigarette. You can't see a cigar light.
- 1:36:13You cannot see a light of any description through the haze and the mist, through the darkness of night.
- 1:36:19You can just see under the starlight the towers, the lighting towers standing on the roof of the Grand Sands.
- 1:36:26You see the wires of the backstop running down in front of it.
- 1:36:29We can see the silhouette of the scoreboard out in direct center field against the rather light sky,
- 1:36:37which is not lit only by moonlight and starlight.
- 1:36:41And over to the left of it is the tower in Grand Sands, two tiers tall, very high.
- 1:36:47However, there is nothing that we can see beyond that.
- 1:36:50It's totally blacked out. It's a trial back out, just a trial back out, which we would like to emphasize.
- 1:36:56And that's the custom here in Cleveland, Ohio, at night games, to constantly and continually try these blackouts,
- 1:37:02just so that everyone might be prepared in case of an emergency.
- 1:37:08We can look up in the heavens and see the stars, and look out towards center field.
- 1:37:13And right below you we see the silhouette.
- 1:37:15And now the lights come on again after the one-minute blackout.
- 1:37:19The lights behind the home plate on the roof flash on, and the banners around the top of the roof wave.
- 1:37:28And out of the five or six or seven light towers, there's an eighth one just going on.
- 1:37:35Now we're going to the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:37:40And the all-service team is taking the field with Johnny Riggie going out there.
- 1:37:45Frankie Sitlock still behind home plate. Andre is at third base.
- 1:37:50Travis at shortstop. Benny McCoy at second base.
- 1:37:54Johnny Stern at first base. Bill Grace in right field.
- 1:37:58Andy Mullins, formerly of Detroit and center field, and John Padgett in left.
- 1:38:03Rudy York will be the first batter for the All-American Leaguers in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:38:08And the score is three to nothing in favor of the All-American League team.
- 1:38:12And the All-American League team so far in this ballgame have had three runs and four hits and three men left on base,
- 1:38:21whereas the all-service team have had no runs, three hits and five men left on base.
- 1:38:29Five hits the All-American Leaguers have had, and the first pitch by Riggie to this big Rudy York is strike one,
- 1:38:38a neat curve which just clips the outside corner to play.
- 1:38:42Riggie's next pitch to York is a curve ball outside, and York fouls the ball off.
- 1:38:49York fouls it off or strikes two, and Riggie has them two and nothing.
- 1:38:59Riggie around his head, steps, comes out of the side by the way of Kansas City and pops the ball up behind the catcher.
- 1:39:05It might drop in the grandstand, and Pitlock tries to make a very brave catch running into the boxes over there to the right of the plate
- 1:39:14and falls against the boxes, but he's just a little bit late and cannot catch the ball.
- 1:39:18The count is two strikes and no balls.
- 1:39:22Pitlock goes back behind the home plate, and Rudy York hands him his mask.
- 1:39:26Now Bollock, the very demonstrative umpire behind the home plate, leans over Pitlock's shoulders
- 1:39:34and Rudy York batting right-handed, who has not had a hit in two turns at batters up there for his third appearance.
- 1:39:40Riggie out of the side and it's strike three as Al Bollock, as if he were punching at Joe Lewis, counts strike three and Rudy York strikes out.
- 1:39:54That's the second strike out by Johnny Riggie this evening.
- 1:39:58He's walked two men.
- 1:40:01In the middle comes Bobby Dore, one of the leading hitters of the American League, and he uses a typical Heinegroh stance, a wide-open stance,
- 1:40:09his body facing the pitcher, and the first slider thrown by Johnny Riggie, who's getting hot now for the all-favorite team, is strike one.
- 1:40:17Just nips the outside corner.
- 1:40:19Bobby Dore wide open as the pitch comes in there and he swings hard and fouls it off for strike two.
- 1:40:24Doing nothing.
- 1:40:27Bobby Dore doesn't hold his arms as high as Heinegroh used to, but his body is entirely around, just standing facing, directly facing Johnny Riggie in the pitcher's box.
- 1:40:38Bat laid on his right shoulder, swinging right-handed as Riggie comes around his edge, steps, delivers a curve, and it's strike three as Dore takes that curve right over the outside corner.
- 1:40:48And Riggie is showing a burst of pitching here, which, Stampton, is one of the best pitches of the American League.
- 1:40:54He's getting hot and really cutting that curve across those outside corners, and it's a pleasure to watch Frankie Pitlock catch it.
- 1:41:00Standing down there, crouching behind the home plate, holding that target, and Riggie placing every ball right in that grove.
- 1:41:06Up comes Keltner, who takes ball one outside.
- 1:41:10Riggie doesn't wait much when he gets the ball. He just takes that sign from Pitlock.
- 1:41:15The all-service infield with their hands on their knees as Riggie delivers again and the ball is hit sharply into left field.
- 1:41:21Then bounce to Don Padgett, who feels it, throws it back into second base, and Kenny Keltner is on first base with a single.
- 1:41:30That's the second hit by Keltner this evening, and the first man of the All-American League is to have two hits.
- 1:41:36He had a triple in the second inning, threw out to left field in the fourth, and now singled in the sixth.
- 1:41:42And Buddy Rozar with one hit in two turns at bat is up there.
- 1:41:46Number 12 on his back from the Yankee uniform and takes a bouncing curveball, which struck the ground.
- 1:41:52Pitlock fielded the ball, or ball one.
- 1:41:56Kenny Keltner on first base with two outs, last half of the sixth inning, and the All-American League is leading 3-0.
- 1:42:04The pitch is strikes one as that slider zips across there again, and now the crowd is getting a big bounce out of the way Riggie is pitching
- 1:42:11in the way that Al Barlich is calling the strikes and balls.
- 1:42:16Riggie around is out of the side, strike two, and Al Barlich jumps up in the air and calls strike two and does a regular law dance behind the home plate.
- 1:42:25Well, he's been in baseball 22 years. We never saw an umpire really call him this way.
- 1:42:30Well, it's a pleasure, and it's very refreshing to see it.
- 1:42:33Riggie around his head again, and the ball is hit right down over second base in the center field,
- 1:42:39and there goes Keltner around second base, hitting into third and pulls up a third as Rozar pulls around first and is content with a single.
- 1:42:49So Rozar has two hits to his credits.
- 1:42:51Sending Keltner around the third base, he himself is off down first.
- 1:43:00And Sid Hudson, who's been doing a nice job of pitching for the All-American League, has come to bat.
- 1:43:05He's getting a nice hand from the crowd as he's shown a splendid exhibition of curling here this evening.
- 1:43:12Make no mistake about it, this all-service team is a good ball club.
- 1:43:16If any team in the big league are battled, I dare say if they had a few extra reserves, they'd finish third in any league.
- 1:43:23And the ball is hit on the ground by Hudson down the third base.
- 1:43:25Andre's up with it, goes over to first, and Johnny Serm, reaching way into the infield, takes it for the third up.
- 1:43:32And so for the All-Stars, the American League All-Stars, the last half of the sixth inning, there were no runs, two hits, and two men left on base.
- 1:43:42And in the sixth inning that the All-Stars have been to bat, the American Leaguers have had three runs, seven hits, and five men left on base, and they have not made an error.
- 1:43:51We're going now into the first half of the seventh inning.
- 1:43:55Another good colleague and friend from Chicago, Bob, I'll pick it up from here and bring you through these last innings.
- 1:44:03Thank you very much, Wade.
- 1:44:07And good evening, fans. We've been seeing quite a ball game here.
- 1:44:11As Louis White and Jack Rainey, my colleagues here in Cleveland tonight, former baseball players and our baseball broadcasts,
- 1:44:18we're going to find a job of telling you just exactly what's happening.
- 1:44:22This door is three to nothing in favor of the American League over the service team All-Stars, and we go into the first half of the seventh.
- 1:44:29Down the line here to my left, the Navy Band from the Great Lakes, one of the finest musical aggregations in America,
- 1:44:36is striking up a note as the American League is out there on the field.
- 1:44:41I notice a little change now in the lineup. McQuint, the great first baseman of St. Louis, is going down to play first.
- 1:44:47Let's see a second baseman's door at North Stop and Vito, a third baseman's counter, left field, Woodward,
- 1:44:52center field, Demage Hill, right field, Westfield, Spencer, the only change.
- 1:44:55And here's going to be two hitters.
- 1:45:01McQuint is playing first base, and the first man to bat for the service team is going to be the first baseman, Johnny Stern,
- 1:45:10the left-handed hitter. He's the first time bounced out on the second time walk.
- 1:45:13He's a left-hand hitter, and he's facing a right-hand pitcher, Sid Hudson, a tall, thin, wily sort of fella,
- 1:45:18and a really good pitcher. Here comes the first pitch at St. Paul.
- 1:45:21It's low inside, and the batter, Johnny Stern, backs away.
- 1:45:24The American League outfield is playing this hitter straight away, and not too deep.
- 1:45:28Now, you remember Stern with the Yankees. He never had a reputation as a long ball hitter,
- 1:45:32but he's one of those sharp hitters. Over that infield and through that infield.
- 1:45:35There is a smash to right field, a line drive, and Ward jumps up to try to get it with one hand, but couldn't head it off.
- 1:45:41He made a beautiful try for that ball, and the service team starts off the seventh inning with a base hit to right field,
- 1:45:47a very sharp hit by Johnny Stern, the first baseman. That is their fourth hit.
- 1:45:53Now, the one thing to remember, fans, about this ball game is this.
- 1:45:56While the American League leads 3-0, the service team is not out of reach.
- 1:46:01They're trailing by just three runs. Here's the right-hand hitter, Andrews, up there.
- 1:46:05There's the first pitch, and it's high and wide for a ball.
- 1:46:08Andrews has been up twice the first time he's been there, and the second time he hit into a fast double play.
- 1:46:14The big, scoppy right-handed kid, and he's a good hitter.
- 1:46:18But you're getting all set again here. The next one is a swing and a slow change of pace
- 1:46:22picking around his waist, and he followed it. It rolls on the ground at the right of the plate,
- 1:46:26and the crowd is one and one.
- 1:46:28As you can hear from the noise here in this big stadium at Cleveland,
- 1:46:31the crowd is pulling for the service stars to do something.
- 1:46:35They want to see them really get back into this ball game.
- 1:46:38They almost got off in front here in the first inning when they had the bases loaded with one out.
- 1:46:43Now, the pitch is getting all set again. Here's the next one, and Andrews swings.
- 1:46:46There's a drive into left-center field. It may be.
- 1:46:48It is a hit into left-center field, and it puts runners on first and second.
- 1:46:52A drive into left-center field. Teddy Williams was coming over fast,
- 1:46:56and I thought he might get through that ball.
- 1:46:58It just dropped in front of him in left-center, and it's a base hit.
- 1:47:01The service team fans is on its way here at Cleveland in the first half of the seventh inning,
- 1:47:07and there is a runner going out for first.
- 1:47:10There is a runner going out.
- 1:47:19I don't hear the announcement.
- 1:47:23Mr. Hayduck is going to play.
- 1:47:35Running for third, Pager, number six.
- 1:47:38There it is. Mr. Hayduck is out there on second base running for third,
- 1:47:42so we have two men on and nobody out for the service stars.
- 1:47:45There is a tie to try to cross the base with Paul.
- 1:47:48Now, Paulie keeps that right-pist up into the air.
- 1:47:51He goes down in the left field, both hand the parrots.
- 1:47:54The left-hander is warming up to the service stars.
- 1:47:56And all through to our right, there are two pitchers warming up to the American League.
- 1:47:59Two men on and nobody on in the seventh.
- 1:48:01There is an attempted front of a very high pitch, and he fouled it.
- 1:48:05Perky Pitlak attempted to front a very high pitch, and he fouled the ball.
- 1:48:09It goes all the way back into the screen.
- 1:48:11The catcher, Buddy Rose, gets a new baseball from the umpire
- 1:48:14and passes them out at the top to Hutch.
- 1:48:22Hayduck is out on second.
- 1:48:24Andries is on first with a second hit of the night.
- 1:48:27There's nobody out.
- 1:48:28And little Frankie Pitlak is up in the batter's box right down here below our mutual booth.
- 1:48:33Hutch can get the ball set.
- 1:48:34Here's the next pitch, an inside pitch.
- 1:48:35It's been very close, and he has to jump to get out of the way.
- 1:48:38The encounters, ball one and strike two for Frankie Pitlak.
- 1:48:42The River Stars are trailing three to nothing here at Cleveland.
- 1:48:45The American League scored two in the first and one in the second.
- 1:48:49Hudson gets set again.
- 1:48:50Here's the next pitch, and there is a swing and a miss, and he struck him out.
- 1:48:54Frankie Pitlak went all the way around trying to get that ball to ride, and he struck out.
- 1:48:59So there is a strikeout for Hudson, and now we're going to get a pinch hitter for Wigny.
- 1:49:07Here is a pinch hitter coming up to the plate to bat for Wigny.
- 1:49:11Lookadello, Johnny Lookadello is coming up to the plate of the Browns.
- 1:49:18He's a left-handed hitter.
- 1:49:19Here's the announcement.
- 1:49:22Here's Johnny Lookadello up in there, a left-handed batter.
- 1:49:25He's batting for Johnny Rigney, and that means a parrots is going to come in to pitch for the service team.
- 1:49:31Runners on first and second and one's on.
- 1:49:33There's a hopper fouled on the first base line, and it's one strike.
- 1:49:37Remember that McQuinn is now playing first base in place of York.
- 1:49:40Dora is at second.
- 1:49:41At shortstop is Flea Lesudo of the Yankees.
- 1:49:44At third base is Kenny Keltner.
- 1:49:46It's Williams in left field, DiMaggio in center field, and Sam Spence of Washington and right field.
- 1:49:51The batter is Sid Hudson, the pitcher, and the catcher is Buddy Rozar, who has gone all the way for the American League team.
- 1:50:01One strike on Lookadello, a left-handed batter.
- 1:50:04Hudson gets at a fastball, and he got a piece of that ball and fouled it back into the screen.
- 1:50:08And it's two strikes on Lookadello.
- 1:50:11Next man to come up will be the leadoff man, Mullen, the center fielder who has been up three times without a hit.
- 1:50:19The service team is connected for two hits here in the first half of the seventh to run their total for the night to five hits.
- 1:50:26A hit in the first, a hit in the second, a hit in the third, and two in the seventh.
- 1:50:30Now he's all set again.
- 1:50:31Here's the next pitcher.
- 1:50:32There is a ball that just missed the outside corner, a tantalizing curve ball that Lookadello was tempted to go after,
- 1:50:37but he didn't, and it's ball one and strike two.
- 1:50:40The American League off field is playing straight away.
- 1:50:43The service team has two men on with one out here in the seventh inning at Cleveland.
- 1:50:47Here comes the next pitch, and there is another wide one.
- 1:50:49That time it was about a foot outside waist-high, and so Johnny Hudson has worked up a count now on this pinch hitter, Lookadello, of two and two.
- 1:50:57Again, the crowd here, which is close to 70,000, I imagine.
- 1:51:01It's very, very close to 70,000.
- 1:51:03They're starting that staccato clapping, and you can hear it through your radio.
- 1:51:09Man on first, man on second, one out, count of ball two, strike two on the batter.
- 1:51:14Up to the set, here it is.
- 1:51:15He swings and hits the ground ball to the pitcher.
- 1:51:17That's the second out.
- 1:51:18That's the first.
- 1:51:19He's out, a double play.
- 1:51:20Lookadello hit into a fast double play, the play going from Putzum, the Bobby Doerr, to the first baseman, McQuinn, and it retires the side.
- 1:51:28And so fans, in the first half of the seventh inning for the service stars, there were no runs and there were two hits.
- 1:51:38Lookadello hit into a fast double play, pitcher to second to first.
- 1:51:43And now this ball game is going into the last half of the seventh.
- 1:51:47Hayduck is going to first base.
- 1:51:49We're going to get a new pitcher coming in from the bullpen down here to our left.
- 1:51:57The service team is taking the field.
- 1:51:59I believe that we're going to get a new center fielder, too.
- 1:52:01I believe that Chapman is going into the outfield.
- 1:52:03The great center fielder of the Philadelphia Athletics, I believe, is going into the ball game.
- 1:52:07While we're watching for these changes, I believe that we'll pause briefly for station identification.
- 1:52:11You're listening to an exclusive broadcast of the Service American League game from Cleveland, the All-Star game, the second All-Star game, and this is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:52:25This is WGN, the voice of the people of Chicago.
- 1:52:32Our fans, we're back to our Cleveland.
- 1:52:40Here's the left-hander, Harris.
- 1:52:47Morris Mickey Harris from the Army.
- 1:52:50He's stationed in the Panama Canal Zone.
- 1:52:53He was formerly with the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:52:56He reached the Boston Red Sox in July 1940 after only two and a half years in the minor.
- 1:53:01He won four and he lost two for Boston.
- 1:53:06Last year he won eight games and lost 14.
- 1:53:09Here's the ball left-hander.
- 1:53:10He's had about six big calls.
- 1:53:13And there's been a lot of publicity about Harris because, as you know, he was flown out there to take part in this game, and everyone was anxious to see him get into it.
- 1:53:21He's getting into it now in the last half of the seventh as the pitcher for the service team.
- 1:53:26Now the first man to face him, a right-hand hitter, is the leadoff man, Rizzuto, and there is a swing and a miss, and it's one strike.
- 1:53:35Hayduck is playing first as we told you.
- 1:53:37Hayduck is at first.
- 1:53:38McCoy is at second.
- 1:53:39Travis is still at short.
- 1:53:41Andries is at third.
- 1:53:43Clam Chapman is in center field in place of Mullins.
- 1:53:45Here's the next pitch, and there was a slow, channelizing, curterball across his shoulders.
- 1:53:50But I went forward and missed it, so it is two strikes on Rizzuto.
- 1:53:53The American League's batting in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:53:56They're leading three to nothing in this ball game over the service stars who are really giving them a battle.
- 1:54:01Harris gets set again.
- 1:54:02Here's the next pitch, and there's a drive down the right-field line.
- 1:54:04It's going to be a hit.
- 1:54:05It's going to be an extra-base hit.
- 1:54:06It's bounded way back there against the wall.
- 1:54:08Rizzuto's on his way to second.
- 1:54:09The right fielder firing the ball in, and he slips past second base, but he gets back in there.
- 1:54:15Rizzuto running around second base slipped.
- 1:54:17But he got up in time to get back into second base with a double.
- 1:54:21Just as the service team was getting ready to put that ball on him, Rizzuto slipped going around second base.
- 1:54:27When it looked like he might try for the triple, he got up and slipped back into second.
- 1:54:32So it is a two-base hit for Rizzuto.
- 1:54:36That's his second time up and his first hit.
- 1:54:39That is a total of eight hits for the American League.
- 1:54:43It brings up a left-hand hitter, the right fielder, Stan Sprintz.
- 1:54:47There's a man on second base, and there's nobody out here in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:54:50Harris is getting a sign.
- 1:54:51Here's the pitch, and there's a throw to second base, and Rizzuto goes to third, head first, and he's in there safely.
- 1:54:59A delayed steal of third base by Rizzuto.
- 1:55:03The batter attempted to punt that ball.
- 1:55:05He missed it.
- 1:55:06The catcher pit-lacked through to second, and Rizzuto tore to third and slid in safely.
- 1:55:11It's a clean steal of third.
- 1:55:13The play went from the catcher to the second, to second base to third.
- 1:55:19So there's a man on third now for the All-Stars.
- 1:55:24The American League All-Stars, Spence batting.
- 1:55:26There's one strike on him.
- 1:55:28The infield is pulled in a bit.
- 1:55:32Harris taking a lot of time, getting a sign from pit-lack.
- 1:55:35How he starts his windup.
- 1:55:36Here it is.
- 1:55:37There's a hopper over the pitcher's head.
- 1:55:38The runner's still holding third, and the batter is being thrown out in a fast play.
- 1:55:42The play going from McCoy to Hayduck, and the runner Rizzuto held third.
- 1:55:45I thought that he might possibly break for the plate on that ball because it was a slow bounding ball over the pitcher's head to the second base from McCoy,
- 1:55:53but Rizzuto held third, and McCoy threw the batter out.
- 1:55:57It was a very nice play.
- 1:55:58So there's one going.
- 1:56:03Now here's the great Teddy Williams up, one of the greatest hitters in baseball.
- 1:56:06A tall, wiry lad, a left-handed batter, and there is a ball that gets away from the catcher.
- 1:56:11It rolls a few feet back of the plate.
- 1:56:13The pitcher comes in to cover the plate, but Rizzuto plays it safe and stays at third.
- 1:56:20The ball got away from the catcher, Frankie Pitlack, and rolled back about 20 feet behind the plate.
- 1:56:26He and the umpire were getting all tangled up as Frankie wanted to get back to get that ball,
- 1:56:30but the runner stayed at third, so Rizzuto is still there, and there's one going.
- 1:56:35Save us in field is drawn in a few steps.
- 1:56:38They're not playing way in.
- 1:56:40Here comes the next pitch to Williams, and it's a spike.
- 1:56:43He caught the outside corner that time with a beautiful pitch.
- 1:56:46Boy, that was a sharp curve ball that just whipped in over the outside corner, and it's a called strike.
- 1:56:51And so we have it one and one on Teddy Williams, a man on third, one out here in the last half of the seventh at Cleveland
- 1:56:56with the American League ahead three to nothing.
- 1:56:58As I said, and there is a very sharp breaking curve.
- 1:57:01There was a foot outside at the knee,
- 1:57:03and Frankie Pitlack had to go way outside to get it.
- 1:57:06The outfield is playing Williams just a shade to the right, and they're plenty deep for this boy.
- 1:57:11As you know, he's one of the best long ball hitters and also one of the best sharp hitters in baseball.
- 1:57:16He can drive that ball between them.
- 1:57:18Here comes the next pitch, and Williams takes a ball.
- 1:57:20It missed the corner just at the knee, and it's ball three and strike one for Williams.
- 1:57:25The American League would like to get this additional run in from third.
- 1:57:29They're leading three to nothing in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:57:32Harris has said again, here's the next pitch, and there is a high fly ball.
- 1:57:35It's way back in the left center field.
- 1:57:37Padgett going back, Chaplin going back.
- 1:57:39Padgett couldn't get the ball, it went over his head.
- 1:57:41Here's the run scoring.
- 1:57:43Williams is rounding second. He's on his way to third.
- 1:57:45Here's the relay, and Williams pulls up at third with a triple.
- 1:57:48It was a tremendous ball of fans way back in the left center field.
- 1:57:52Padgett raced back from his left field position.
- 1:57:54The center fielder, Chaplin, came tearing over, but the ball dropped behind them,
- 1:57:57and Williams pulls up at third base slowly with an easy triple.
- 1:58:05So the score now is four to nothing in favor of the American League.
- 1:58:09Here is the famous Yankee clipper, Joe DiMaggio, up at the plate, a right-handed batter.
- 1:58:13He's been up three times. He's hit safely once.
- 1:58:16Here's the first pitch, and there is a spike. It caught the outside corner waist-high.
- 1:58:21Fastball right over the outside corner to Joe DiMaggio, a man on third, one run in.
- 1:58:26We're in the last half of the seventh, and the American League now has another run.
- 1:58:30Harris is all set again here. The next pitch, a change of pace pitch.
- 1:58:33It's wide, knee-high, and again, Frankie Pütlak has to go way outside for it.
- 1:58:39The outfielder swung to the other side.
- 1:58:41They're playing DiMaggio as either a left center field hitter or a left field hitter.
- 1:58:45The left fielder, Padgett, is very deep.
- 1:58:47Chaplin in center field is over a bit toward left field, and the right fielder is just about in a normal spot.
- 1:58:52DiMaggio takes a fastball. It's right across his chin, and it's ball two.
- 1:58:56So it's two and one on Joe DiMaggio with Teddy Williams on third. He just tripled.
- 1:59:01He drove in Rizzuto, and the American League is ahead, four to nothing here at Cleveland.
- 1:59:06Harris has his sign again. Here's the next pitch to Joe.
- 1:59:09Joe steps away from on its inside low, and it's ball three in strike one.
- 1:59:14Frankie Pütlak steps out in front of the plate, says something to the pitcher.
- 1:59:19Harris turns around and goes for the rosin bag, taking plenty of time out there getting set.
- 1:59:26Now he peers down at Pütlak. Here's Joe DiMaggio with that familiar stance of his up at the plate.
- 1:59:31Here comes the pitch, and it's a beauty right over the inside corner, race five for a called strike.
- 1:59:36Harris fired in a beautiful pitch that time. It's a called strike on Joe,
- 1:59:40and the Yankee Clippers steps out of the batter's box and gets some dirt on his hands.
- 1:59:43Now he's up in there again.
- 1:59:45There's that familiar black five in the back of his white uniform.
- 1:59:48There's those legs wide apart, that bat over his right shoulder.
- 1:59:51That familiar stance is known to baseball fans the world over.
- 1:59:54Here it is, and there is a very high infield fly on the right side of the infield.
- 1:59:58The first baseman, Hayduck, is between first base and second going to his right.
- 2:00:01He grabbed the ball, and Williams holds third.
- 2:00:04So Joe DiMaggio hit a very powering infield fly ball that was taken by the first baseman, Chester Hayduck,
- 2:00:10going to his right, towards second base in the base path, and there's two gone.
- 2:00:17That, by the way, is the second time tonight that Joe has popped out in the infield.
- 2:00:21The other time he hit into a double play, and the first time he's single driving in a run.
- 2:00:25Now there's a man on third, and here's George McQuinn of the St. Louis Browns,
- 2:00:29one of the best-fielding first basemen in baseball, a fine, sharp hitter, and a swell-out up at the plate.
- 2:00:34He's making his first appearance up there tonight. He took the place of Rudy York,
- 2:00:37and there is a spike. It's right across his knees.
- 2:00:40There's that sharp curve ball, and Farley gluts out that yell again on that strike,
- 2:00:44and the crowd gets a kick out of it.
- 2:00:46The man on third, there's a run in. There's two out here in the last half of the seventh.
- 2:00:50Harris, the left-hander out there on the mound, is getting all set again.
- 2:00:53Mickey swings around. Here comes the next pitch to McQuinn. McQuinn swings.
- 2:00:57There's a drive at the hip, out into right center field.
- 2:00:59It's going way, way out into right center field. It's rolling farther away from the infield.
- 2:01:04He's rounding second. He's on his way to third.
- 2:01:06Here's the relay, but they'll never get him. He's in the dirt, and he's safe at third.
- 2:01:10It's a pitfall for McQuinn, way out into right center field.
- 2:01:14The ball was finally fielded out there by Joe Grace.
- 2:01:17He picked the ball up and fired it into short center field,
- 2:01:19where McCoy, the second baseman, ran out, took the ball, and whipped it over to third base.
- 2:01:23But McQuinn is in at third with another three-base hit,
- 2:01:26and another run has scored for the American League.
- 2:01:31So the score now is five to nothing in favor of the American League in the last half of the seventh.
- 2:01:36McQuinn on first base, with two gone, and here is Bobby Dorup at the plate.
- 2:01:43Right-handed batter. First pitch to him is a bit outside, ball one.
- 2:01:47As Wade told you, Bobby Dorup has a rather odd stance up there at the plate.
- 2:01:51I've asked him about it many, many times when the Red Sox had been in Chicago,
- 2:01:54but he gets wonderful success with that particular stance, and there's no reason for him changing it.
- 2:01:59Here's the next pitch, and there's a very high foul.
- 2:02:01It's off to the right. Pitlak's mask is off. He's back. He should get this ball. He's out, and it retires the side.
- 2:02:07McQuinn is left on third. Frankie Pitlak went back fast for that foul,
- 2:02:11and it retires the side. And so, fans, in the last half of the seventh,
- 2:02:15the American League scored two more runs, and there were three hits.
- 2:02:19A double, a triple, and a triple. Two runs and three hits, and that is the end of the seventh.
- 2:02:25So now let's recheck on the totals for seven innings.
- 2:02:28The American League, five runs, two, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten hits.
- 2:02:36The service all-stars, no runs, and five hits.
- 2:02:43This ballgame is going into the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:02:45It's a wonderful sight here at Cleveland, fans.
- 2:02:47Seventy thousand people are jammed at the stadium to see a grand ballgame,
- 2:02:50and Mutual hopes that you're enjoying this ballgame as you hear our exclusive story about this game from your radio.
- 2:02:58We're going to pause again briefly for station identification.
- 2:03:00You're listening to the broadcast from the Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 2:03:03This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 2:03:09This is WGM, the voice of the people of Chicago.
- 2:03:16Well, here we are. This is Bob Olson talking to you again from Cleveland.
- 2:03:19And here is Tex Hewson of the Boston Red Sox, a very good right-hander out there in the mound.
- 2:03:23He is the third pitcher for the American League.
- 2:03:29Tex Hewson, one of the regulars, regular starters with the Boston club, a right-hander, and a very, very fine pitcher.
- 2:03:37I believe he's won seven ballgames this year.
- 2:03:39I saw him pitch a very splendid game just about a week ago in Chicago.
- 2:03:42The first man to face him up at the plate now is Chapman, the center fielder.
- 2:03:47He's playing in center field for the service team in place of Mullen.
- 2:03:51He's a right-handed batter, and as you all know, those of you who saw him play with Philadelphia,
- 2:03:56he was one of the greatest young outfielders in the game.
- 2:03:58And there is a strike. It's right across his knees, and the count is one and one.
- 2:04:02The service team trails by five runs at Cleveland.
- 2:04:05The American League, two in the first, one in the second, and two in the seventh.
- 2:04:10The service team has failed to score.
- 2:04:12Hewson, the right-hander, is the third pitcher for the American League.
- 2:04:15He's on the mound now pitching to Chapman. The count is one and one.
- 2:04:18Here it comes, and there's a swing and a drive to the first base of McQuinn, a nice pickup.
- 2:04:22There's the run to the bag, and he's out. McQuinn unassisted, and there's one gone.
- 2:04:26And now the American Leaguers fire that ball around the infield from Kenny Keltner to Flea Rosuto to Bobby Dorr,
- 2:04:31back over to McQuinn, and then back to Hewson, and now the boys are getting all set.
- 2:04:35Your country play Mueller, number nine, batting for McCoy.
- 2:04:40Here's Mueller of the Phillies.
- 2:04:43Emmett Mueller, utility man with the Phillies. He's an infielder and outfielder.
- 2:04:46He's an all-around handyman.
- 2:04:48Left-handed batter up at the plate.
- 2:04:50In the first pitch, he swings and fouls up into the wire, and it's one strike.
- 2:04:53Mueller is in the Army.
- 2:04:59He's a left-handed batter and a fine little ball player.
- 2:05:01We saw him many, many times with the Phillies.
- 2:05:03Defton, they're now waiting for the next pitch from Hewson, the outfield playing him straight away.
- 2:05:07There's a swing and a high pitch, and he fouled out when it rose on the ground,
- 2:05:10all the way back to the screen, and it's two strikes.
- 2:05:13There's one out and nobody on here in the first half of the eighth,
- 2:05:16and the service team doesn't have many more chances.
- 2:05:19The Phillies are in the eighth. That means they have just the first half of the ninth to try to get those five runs back.
- 2:05:26Hewson getting all set out there again.
- 2:05:28Here's the next pitch to Mueller. Mueller steps up on a curve ball and lets it go by,
- 2:05:31and it just missed the corner knee-high for a ball.
- 2:05:34So it's ball one and strike two for Mueller, who is batting for Benny McCoy.
- 2:05:40Mueller will go into the ball game for the service team at second base.
- 2:05:43Here comes the next pitch, and there's a fly ball into short right center field.
- 2:05:46Mueller is going for the ball. Right fielder, center fielder, and it drops for a hit.
- 2:05:50And Mueller keeps right on going to second base.
- 2:05:53The boys get crossed up on their signals out there that time.
- 2:05:56DiMaggio and Stan Spence, and the ball dropped right in between them for a two-base hit for Mueller.
- 2:06:04Well, that's one of those things that you see happen very frequently in a ball game.
- 2:06:08The boys just got crossed up on their signals, and right center field between DiMaggio and Spence
- 2:06:13and Mueller is to take that ball, and Mueller gets himself a two-base hit.
- 2:06:17Now here's Padgett up. He's been up three times. He's had one hit.
- 2:06:19There's a strike. It's right across his knees.
- 2:06:22Right over the inside corner, knee-high, Padgett, a giant of a fellow, a left-handed batter, can really pull that ball.
- 2:06:29This fellow used to be with a Cardinals, outfielder and a catcher.
- 2:06:32Then with Brooklyn, there's a strike, a beautiful pitching around his knees is called, and it's two strikes for Padgett.
- 2:06:39The service teams trying to come from behind. They're trailing by five runs here at Cleveland.
- 2:06:43They're batting in the first half of the eighth inning. They have a man on second base and one out.
- 2:06:48The American League outfield on defense is well spread out. They are spread out now.
- 2:06:52Here comes the next pitcher. There's a swing and a fly ball back into left field.
- 2:06:55Williams going back about 15 feet. He's under the ball. He's out, and there's two gone.
- 2:07:00Padgett drove a long fly ball back into left field, and Williams backed up and pulled it down.
- 2:07:05So there's two gone now.
- 2:07:08As Cecil Travis, the former great Washington infielder, comes up.
- 2:07:13This fellow's a left-hand batter, and I believe for a left-hand batter, one of the best left field hitters in baseball.
- 2:07:19This fellow can really slash that ball into left field.
- 2:07:23He did it the second time up today when he doubled the left. There's a spike. It's right across his knees.
- 2:07:29Imagio playing him in dead center. Williams in left field.
- 2:07:32Stan Spence in right field. There's a man on second base for the service teams, and there's two out.
- 2:07:38Hewson, Tech Hewson, the right-hander on the mound.
- 2:07:41Here comes the next pitch, and there is a ball. It's just a bit high and a bit outside, and it's one and one.
- 2:07:49Buddy Rosa, the catcher, takes his glove off, walks out in front of the plate, ruffs that ball up in his hands a bit, and then fires it back to Hewson.
- 2:07:56Hewson is content with a pretty good leadoff second. Here's the next pitch, and there's a swing and a foul back into the wire.
- 2:08:01Travis went all the way around trying to connect with that ball. He foul-tipped it.
- 2:08:05It sailed back into the wire, and there's two strikes on him. It's one and two.
- 2:08:11Mueller out on second base and two gone in the first half of the eighth.
- 2:08:15The American League five, the service all-stars, nothing.
- 2:08:20Hewson getting his sign. Here comes the next pitch, and there is a drive out to the shortstop.
- 2:08:24He's up with that ball. It goes along pegs. Bees out, and a nice play from Rizzuto to McQuinn, and it retires the side.
- 2:08:30So Mueller is left on the bases, and the totals in the first half of the eighth inning are no runs and one hit.
- 2:08:37It makes the eighth inning totals for the service teams.
- 2:08:40For the service team, no runs and one, two, three, four, five, six hits.
- 2:08:45Now we're going into the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:08:49Service team going out onto the field. Andries is going to third.
- 2:08:54Cease Travis out to short. There's Mueller going to second.
- 2:08:58Rester Hayduck is at first.
- 2:09:00In the outfield, Chapman in center field.
- 2:09:03Padgett in left field.
- 2:09:05Grace in right field.
- 2:09:07Frankie Pitlak is catching, and we're going to get a new pitcher now for the service team.
- 2:09:14Here is a new pitcher coming in for the service team.
- 2:09:17Fourth pitcher for them tonight.
- 2:09:21Right-hander.
- 2:09:26Here comes the announcement. Listen to it.
- 2:09:29Number nine, now good change.
- 2:09:32Rodzicki, number nine, now good change.
- 2:09:36Johnny Rodzicki, who's with the Army, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
- 2:09:42The property of the St. Louis Cardinals are right-handers on the mound.
- 2:09:46Member of the Cardinal chain, Rodzicki won 19 and lost five at Columbus last season, compiling an earned run average of 2.58.
- 2:09:53Assigned to the service branch of the armored forces of Fort Knox, the big right-hander finds time to pitch.
- 2:09:59Every couple of weeks, he's appeared in excellent pitching conditions in all of his efforts so far with the Army, and he's getting his chance here tonight at Cleveland.
- 2:10:07The big right-hander is out there now firing in a few practice pitches to Frankie Pitlak, and the American League is coming to bat in the last half of the eighth.
- 2:10:15The score of the American League Five, the service team nothing as we start the last half of the eighth.
- 2:10:22Now the first man to bat.
- 2:10:24This is Kenny Keltner. Kenny Keltner has been up three times tonight. He has two hits.
- 2:10:28First time he drove a long triple in the left center field.
- 2:10:30The second time he flied out, and the third time he hit safely, and there is a fast ball right around his knees, and it's a called strike.
- 2:10:37The left fielder, Don Tadgett, is playing him plenty deep, and he should.
- 2:10:40Kenny drove one of the longest balls I've seen hit in this park, way out in the left center field, and that ball was hit a mile.
- 2:10:46As Zecchi gets that again, here's the next pitch, and there is a foul. It's up in the wire here to our right, and it's two strikes.
- 2:10:53Artie Fletcher of the Yankees is coaching at third, down here to our left.
- 2:10:57Straight down the first base line is Stanley Harris, former boy manager of the Washington Senators who won two pennants for the Senators many years ago.
- 2:11:06Here comes the next pitch to Keltner. Keltner hits a bouncing ball down to Andries at third. There goes the peg.
- 2:11:11He's out. It's an easy play. Andries to Hayduck, and he was out at first by ten feet.
- 2:11:19Now the next batter is Buddy Rozar, the stocky lad, second string catcher on the Yankee ball club.
- 2:11:27He's caught the entire game tonight, and he's had two hits.
- 2:11:32And up three times, he's making his fourth appearance of the night.
- 2:11:35He's stepping up now in the last half of the eighth inning with one gone. The score five to nothing in favor of the American League.
- 2:11:41There's a ball that's a little bit low and inside.
- 2:11:45Rod Zecchi of the Army is now pitching for the service team.
- 2:11:49Duller started, then Wigney, then Harris, and now Rod Zecchi.
- 2:11:53He's a right-hander. He swings around. Here's the next pitch, and there's a long wallop way back in the center field.
- 2:11:57Chapman going back, back, back. He's there, and he grabbed that ball way out in center field. A long wallop by Buddy Rozar for the second up.
- 2:12:05Sam really had to turn around and keep running. He turned around again just at the right time to pull that ball out of the air.
- 2:12:11So there's two gone, and the service team whips that ball around the infield.
- 2:12:17Here's Tex Houston coming up for his first time at bat. He's walking up. He says something to umpire Balik.
- 2:12:22Steps around to the left side. Here he is right below our mutual broadcasting booth in Cleveland. A red 21 in the back of his white uniform.
- 2:12:29A tall, good-looking lad. He's up in there now waiting for the first pitch. Rod Zecchi is all set. Here it is.
- 2:12:35And it's a ball. Fast ball almost into the dirt.
- 2:12:38The outfield with the pitcher up moves in about ten steps.
- 2:12:42They're playing him straight away. Right fielder is short.
- 2:12:46Here comes the next pitch, and there is a strike. He stepped away from the curve ball that broke away from him.
- 2:12:51He stepped away from the right-hand hitter and tore the plate. It was a very nice pitch, and it evens the count at one and one.
- 2:12:56It's two out and nobody on in the last half of the eighth. Rod Zecchi is all set.
- 2:13:00Here's the next pitch. There is a strike. It's called over the outside corner, knee high.
- 2:13:04And Balik again shoots that right fist up into the air, and it's one and two.
- 2:13:08Pitcher Euston batting with two outs. Rod Zecchi gets all set again. He has started his motions.
- 2:13:13He swings around. Here it is. He struck him out. A curve ball over the outside corner, and Euston is called out on strike.
- 2:13:20And so that is the end. No runs and no hits.
- 2:13:25That is the end of the eighth, and now fans, we're going into the first half of the ninth inning of this ballgame at Cleveland,
- 2:13:30at the big municipal stadium, between the American League All-Stars and the service team All-Stars,
- 2:13:35and what a grand ballgame it's been.
- 2:13:37The score of the American League Five and the service team Nothing as we go into the first half of the ninth.
- 2:13:45I believe we'll pause now to let our mutual stations across the country come in and identify themselves.
- 2:13:50As you know, this is an exclusive broadcast carried from Cleveland,
- 2:13:55so that you fans, wherever you happen to be listening to it, can hear the complete story of this wonderful game.
- 2:14:00This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 2:14:04This is WGM, the voices of the people, Chicago.
- 2:14:17Well, friends, here we are back here at Cleveland. Here's a pinch hitter coming up, Mori Arnovich.
- 2:14:24Mori Arnovich, a right-hand hitter, is coming up to bat for Grace as we start the first half of the ninth.
- 2:14:30Here comes the announcement. Listen to it.
- 2:14:34There's a ball wide.
- 2:14:38Mori Arnovich is up at the plate.
- 2:14:41Mori played with a number of teams in the National League.
- 2:14:44There's a pitcher there as a spike gets over the outside corner.
- 2:14:47I remember that for a while.
- 2:14:49I believe it was in 1940 when Mori led the National League for the first couple of months of the season.
- 2:14:53Right-hand batter who does not crowd the plate. He stands pretty far away from it.
- 2:14:57He has the number one in the back of his gray uniform, and there's a ball that's wide.
- 2:15:01It's ball two and strike one.
- 2:15:03The service team trails by five runs, but they're still hopeful that maybe they can get a rally going here in the ninth.
- 2:15:09Lusen is ready again. The next pitch Arnovich takes is in the dirt. It's a ball.
- 2:15:13It's three and one now for Arnovich.
- 2:15:16And the catcher, Buddy Rosa, walks out in front of the plate, says something to Lusen, and then fires in the ball.
- 2:15:21So far, the service team has made just six hits and no runs. They're trailing five to nothing in the ninth.
- 2:15:27Lusen gets ready again. There is a spike. He caught the outside corner knee-high with a beautiful pitch, and it's ball three and strike two.
- 2:15:35The American League outfield is straight away. DeBageaux in center field, Williams in left field, and Stanspence in right field.
- 2:15:40Here comes the next pitch. He hits a roller down to the third baseman Keltner, who's up with the ball.
- 2:15:44There goes the peg. He's out. Keltner to McQuinn, and there's one gone.
- 2:15:49Now the American Leagueers fire that ball around the infield. Keltner to Dorr to McQuinn to Rizzuto, and back around again, and then back to the pitcher.
- 2:15:56There's one gone in the first half of the night.
- 2:16:02There's the first baseman, Chester Hayduck.
- 2:16:06Cofferty of the White Sox, the right-handed butter. There is a spike. It's right across his knee.
- 2:16:12One strike on Hayduck.
- 2:16:18Here comes the next pitch, and he goes all the way around, trying to miss a beautiful curve ball in around his knees, and it's two strikes.
- 2:16:27One out and nobody on in the night. Last chance for the service team to get back into the ball game.
- 2:16:31There's a ground ball out to the second baseman. Dorr is up with the ball. There goes the peg. He's out.
- 2:16:35Dorr to McQuinn, and there's two gone.
- 2:16:38And again, the American Leagueers fire it around, and now the cause of the service teams, in this ball game at least, looks pretty hopeless.
- 2:16:46There's two gone in the night.
- 2:16:50Here's Andres, who's had two hits, by the way, for the service team.
- 2:16:56Right-handed batter, and there is a very high foul off here to the left.
- 2:17:00The catcher is going to his left, throws out into that ball, and grabs it, and takes it, and the ball game is over.
- 2:17:06And so the final score is five to nothing here in this ball game. We'll get the totals for you right away.
- 2:17:12The service team was in the battle all the way until the American League scored those two runs in the seventh,
- 2:17:19and then they pulled away with two additional runs to make it five to nothing,
- 2:17:22and from that point on it looked like the job of the service team was a little bit hopeless.
- 2:17:27We'll check those totals again.
- 2:17:30They are for the American League, five runs, ten hits, and no errors.
- 2:17:37For the Army, Navy, the service team, no runs, six hits, and no errors.
- 2:17:44In the records, this ball game will go into the records as a victory.
- 2:17:50The winning pitcher will be Bagby, and the losing pitcher will be Feller.
- 2:17:56The runs in the early stages of the game were scored in the first inning.
- 2:18:00The American League scored two runs on two hits in the first inning, a hit by Henrik, a walk to Williams,
- 2:18:05a hit by DiMaggio, and a fly ball.
- 2:18:07Then they scored a run in the third on a couple more hits, a triple by Keltner and a single by Rosar.
- 2:18:12They scored again in the seventh and a combination of three hits, a double by Rosito, a triple by Williams,
- 2:18:19and a triple by McQuinn, and that was the ball game.
- 2:18:22The service teams failed to score. They had a hit in the first, a hit in the second, a hit in the third.
- 2:18:27They had two hits in the seventh and one hit in the eighth, and the final score is five to nothing
- 2:18:32in favor of the American League, and they certainly are champions.
- 2:18:35They proved it last night in the Polo grounds, in a great ball game that we saw there with Jim Britt and Mel Allen,
- 2:18:40and they proved it here in a ball game we saw in Cleveland tonight with Jack Graney and Wade Hite,
- 2:18:45and this really was a ball game because the lead was only three to nothing,
- 2:18:49and the service team was within striking distance all the time.
- 2:18:52And that's when we know that a large number of you people listening wish that you could have been present
- 2:18:56at this great game tonight.
- 2:18:58However, knowing that to be a physical impossibility, the thought occurs to us
- 2:19:01that you might be interested in aiding the fine cause by sending in the price of a ticket
- 2:19:05for your seat tonight at the radio.
- 2:19:07These seats were $1.35 and $1.60, and if you'd like to, you can send your contribution
- 2:19:12to the Cleveland Baseball Company who in turn will see that it is added
- 2:19:16to the combined Army and Navy Relief Fund.
- 2:19:19As you know, the funds of the two games were combined.
- 2:19:22The first $100,000 went to the baseball, the ball and bat fund,
- 2:19:26which is to provide baseballs and bats and grubs for all the camps.
- 2:19:30After that, all the money is divided equally between the service, half to the Army
- 2:19:36and half to the Navy.
- 2:19:38So the American League wins both games.
- 2:19:40They defeat the National League 3-1 in New York, and they win this great game here in Cleveland
- 2:19:44by a score of 5 to nothing.
- 2:19:46It's been a swell ball game to see, and I want my colleagues who have done a splendid job here tonight
- 2:19:50to come in to say goodbye to you and to have a few words of comment.
- 2:19:53First here is Jack Rainey. Come in, Jack.
- 2:19:55Bob, that was a very nice ball game. Nicky Cocker and the all-service team have a very good ball club.
- 2:20:02They tried hard, but they just were not good enough for the American League ball club.
- 2:20:08Thank you very much, Jack, and it was swell to have you with us.
- 2:20:11And now from Cincinnati, here's Wade Hoyt.
- 2:20:13We're also very happy to have with us tonight. Wade, will you come in for a word?
- 2:20:17All right, thank you, Bob. I've seen a lot of ball games in the past, a lot of all-star games,
- 2:20:21a lot of World Series, that fits in seven World Series.
- 2:20:24But I think I've never seen a ball game more closely contested than this one here this evening.
- 2:20:28You must remember, fans, that this all-service team that was out here playing the All-American League All-Stars
- 2:20:34is not a team that has been playing regularly.
- 2:20:37Some of the Navy boys have, but some of the Army boys have been devoted to their patriotic duty, of course,
- 2:20:42and their Army duty, and naturally being in physical condition is not always being in baseball condition.
- 2:20:48Some of these boys, for instance, Bobby Tully, you could notice in his pitching that he was just a little bit wild
- 2:20:52with some of his tosses. He perhaps was a little overanxious to try to impress these thousand-sixty-some-thousand fans
- 2:20:59here this evening. They're trying to give them a good show.
- 2:21:02He was out here delivering everything he had on every ball, trying to work hard,
- 2:21:06trying to give those fans a treat, and what they paid for.
- 2:21:10However, it was a splendid show right from 6.30 on right through to the final out of this ball game.
- 2:21:15We had a great military demonstration, and I'm sure that everybody enjoyed themselves here this evening.
- 2:21:20We had the greatest baseball or sports spectacles of all time,
- 2:21:23and I know that you fans that have been listening in have enjoyed it too.
- 2:21:26Mrs. Wade Boyd, saying good evening to you, and Bob Elton once more.
- 2:21:30Thank you very much, Wade.
- 2:21:32And friends, I don't have to tell you I'm sure that the mutual broadcasting system is exceedingly proud
- 2:21:37to have brought this ball game to you tonight.
- 2:21:39They brought you the ball game last night exclusively from New York,
- 2:21:42and this ball game tonight, I just have a feeling, even though we've seen ball games and broadcast all-star games
- 2:21:47and World Series for years, at this ball game, every fan, every man, woman, and child
- 2:21:53in all sections of our great country was interested in,
- 2:21:56and we certainly know that all the service boys were in all the camps and all the ships at sea.
- 2:22:00This broadcast night was recorded, and it'll be set out by short waves
- 2:22:05so that the boys in all the camps, the boys in Ireland, the boys in Australia,
- 2:22:08will all know just exactly what happened here at Cleveland tonight.
- 2:22:12And as I say, mutual is proud to have brought you this ball game
- 2:22:15so that you could have heard one of the outstanding sports classics of the year.
- 2:22:19Of course, mutual is in the forefront of bringing you the great sports events in America,
- 2:22:24and this is just another one in that great chain of events.
- 2:22:27And so, fans, that's just about all there is now from Cleveland.
- 2:22:30The American League won 5-0.
- 2:22:32That just about wraps up the package. That's all there is. There isn't any more.
- 2:22:35And in so we say goodbye. This is Bob Elton saying good night for Cleveland now
- 2:22:39for my coworkers here, Jack Laney and Wade Hoyt and myself.
- 2:22:43And we return you now to our Cleveland studios.
