- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory foul Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. Before we
- 0:19Speaker 1: kick off the show, I wanted to read an email.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It was a really kind email from our friend John Rose.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He bought a North Side Territory t shirt. He wrote
- 0:29Speaker 1: in this message he wants to meet for drinks. He says,
- 0:32Speaker 1: let's meet for drinks my treat. I've been reading following
- 0:35Speaker 1: you guys since CSN for Patrick and Sahadeve tweeting from
- 0:39Speaker 1: Bruce Levine's account. That's I mean, that's a long time ago.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I was. I literally went back.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I forgot until I saw that I had forgotten
- 0:49Speaker 1: that I was tweeting from Bruce's account way back in
- 0:53Speaker 1: the day.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I believe it.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Was like ESPN Cubs, ESPN Chicago Cubs, something like that.
- 1:00Speaker 1: That was the Twitter handle. Bruce was not tweeting back then,
- 1:04Speaker 1: so it would just be the the somebody from the
- 1:07Speaker 1: company social media wise tweeting stuff out. So I they
- 1:10Speaker 1: gave me access and I'd put SS at the end
- 1:13Speaker 1: of my tweets, so people knew it was it was
- 1:16Speaker 1: me that I mean that is like it literally had
- 1:21Speaker 1: like was out of my mind. I didn't remember that
- 1:24Speaker 1: I was doing that until I saw that. So that's
- 1:27Speaker 1: that's awesome. John, I appreciate you. I we both really
- 1:30Speaker 1: appreciate you following for that long supporting us. And uh
- 1:35Speaker 1: and you know, go into the shop. It's a North
- 1:37Speaker 1: Side Territoryshop dot com. Uh, it's you can get you
- 1:41Speaker 1: know whatever the tone of gear there, like bags, notebooks,
- 1:45Speaker 1: t shirts, all sorts of stuff. It's a you know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: pretty new you can if you're watching on YouTube right now,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you can scan that and get right to the side
- 1:54Speaker 1: nor North Side Territory Shop dot com. Appreciate all of
- 1:58Speaker 1: you listening with We've had a lot of people listening
- 2:01Speaker 1: lately and really appreciate the support.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Uh. We we hope it continues on it.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Obviously, the trade deadline is an active time, so we
- 2:11Speaker 1: know you're you're hungry for information. We are going to
- 2:15Speaker 1: do our best to give it to you in this episode. Patrick,
- 2:19Speaker 1: it's a it's a trade deadline episode yet again.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I mean, that's the hot thing to talk about. We're
- 2:25Speaker 2: not going to stop.
- 2:26Speaker 1: It was a it was a difficult week. I'd say
- 2:30Speaker 1: I liked the weekend. I thought the Cubs looked really
- 2:32Speaker 1: good over the weekend. Uh this week against Kansas City,
- 2:37Speaker 1: that was not their best you know, I don't know
- 2:39Speaker 1: if it was their worst series.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I don't want to, you know, be hyperbolic. It wasn't
- 2:45Speaker 1: a good series.
- 2:46Speaker 2: They just didn't.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The pitching is under the microscope now, we you know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: we've been talking about it for over a month. That
- 2:56Speaker 1: is the number one goal of the trade deadline, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: I think it was just emphasiz with the performance against
- 3:01Speaker 1: a bad offensive team that put up the you know,
- 3:04Speaker 1: Matthew Boyd, an absolute stud shut them out, and then
- 3:09Speaker 1: the Royal still scored twenty runs in that series. That's
- 3:13Speaker 1: I mean, just like it just really puts a spotlight
- 3:16Speaker 1: on what the main obvious need for this team is.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was perfect timing too for our purposes
- 3:24Speaker 3: to have seth Lugo on the mound on was it
- 3:28Speaker 3: ninety two degrees at first pitch? It was just gross,
- 3:32Speaker 3: great day to hit. And you know, Lugo well before
- 3:39Speaker 3: this was on the Cubs radar as like an interesting
- 3:43Speaker 3: guy to plug into rotation. I think stat cast lists
- 3:46Speaker 3: him as having ten pitches. I think it's very impressive
- 3:50Speaker 3: how he took control of his career and said I
- 3:53Speaker 3: want to be a starter and kind of like did
- 3:55Speaker 3: not just kind of settle for a role, Like how
- 3:57Speaker 3: many guys in spring training, Oh, of course be a starter,
- 4:00Speaker 3: Like that's like one of the oldest spring training stories.
- 4:03Speaker 3: But this guy over the years just proved himself in
- 4:06Speaker 3: New York, he went to San Diego, He's been a
- 4:10Speaker 3: big part of things in Kansas City, and that was
- 4:12Speaker 3: you know, he was getting asked about a Teammates are
- 4:15Speaker 3: getting asked about it in the Wrigley Visiting clubhouse afterwards.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And I think he's kind of a good name here
- 4:21Speaker 3: as we get into I think we have twenty two names.
- 4:25Speaker 3: You know that the cups are on every single player
- 4:28Speaker 3: who may get moved in the next week here. But
- 4:32Speaker 3: pitching just has to be the focus. It just there's
- 4:37Speaker 3: been too many sort of bullpen games, you know, even
- 4:43Speaker 3: that last series before the break, they won a series
- 4:45Speaker 3: at Yankee Stadium, but just what was it like eleven nothing,
- 4:50Speaker 3: eleven to one, And then you have Shoda, you have
- 4:53Speaker 3: Boyd pitching the rest of the weekend, and all of
- 4:57Speaker 3: a sudden, it looks a lot better and you need
- 4:59Speaker 3: you just need to lugging at least one legit accomplished
- 5:03Speaker 3: experience starter here to kind of get you through these
- 5:08Speaker 3: next couple of months.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't want to be too hard on Colin Ray.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That's that's a time. Yeah, he's done really well, that's
- 5:16Speaker 1: that's like. But he has his limitations and a day
- 5:19Speaker 1: like that at Wrigley is just not a good day
- 5:21Speaker 1: for Colin Ray to be pitching.
- 5:22Speaker 2: He is going like he has to be perfect.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And he wasn't. He he made mistakes to the wrong players.
- 5:29Speaker 1: There are just players on that Royals team that you
- 5:32Speaker 1: kind of especially when Bobby Witt isn't playing, You can't
- 5:35Speaker 1: make a mistake to Pascatino.
- 5:37Speaker 2: He's will crush mistakes, and he did.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But Colin Ray has, you know, really admirable what he's
- 5:45Speaker 1: done so far this season. You know, he's kept the
- 5:47Speaker 1: team in games, he's helped them win games often enough.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Wednesday was not a good good day for him to
- 5:54Speaker 1: be out there. I think Seth Lugo's probably if I
- 5:57Speaker 1: were to rank the rental, and I know Lugo's kind
- 6:01Speaker 1: of a weird situation because he has that player option.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I don't think anybody, any team that's pursuing him is
- 6:06Speaker 1: looking at him as anything but a rental. I'm sure
- 6:09Speaker 1: the Royals will try and market him as not a
- 6:12Speaker 1: rental or try to get more value for him than
- 6:14Speaker 1: a rental.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I don't think that's realistic.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Uh, he's at the top of my list if you're
- 6:19Speaker 1: if you're talking about the rentals, it's not a great
- 6:22Speaker 1: list when it comes to rentals. His teammate is not
- 6:24Speaker 1: a rental. I'm not sure if he's available, but he'd
- 6:28Speaker 1: be a huge ad in Chris Boobache. We didn't see
- 6:31Speaker 1: him this week against the Cubs, but that's a guy
- 6:35Speaker 1: that you add him, you're and there's a few names
- 6:39Speaker 1: on this list that we're going to go through.
- 6:40Speaker 2: You add him, you're getting impact now and then.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You you save yourself for spending in the off season.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I believe does he have one or two years after this?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Who We've been doing research on so many names that
- 6:56Speaker 1: I lose track of who has he has one year?
- 6:59Speaker 2: He has one year after this twenty twenty.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Six, But that's obviously a really good season. He's you know,
- 7:06Speaker 1: he's got the peripherals to back it.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Up solid ground ball rate.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It does everything that you kind of want, and then
- 7:14Speaker 1: you put him in front of the Cubs defense and
- 7:16Speaker 1: he's even better.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I like, boo, bitch, I think you'd be great.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'd be surprised if he's if he can be pried away.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I also think the Royals are probably still on
- 7:29Speaker 1: the fence. I don't like they're just they want to win,
- 7:32Speaker 1: they want to compete, and this week probably helped them
- 7:36Speaker 1: kind of go. I don't think they're full on in
- 7:39Speaker 1: either direction just yet, but probably nudged them in the
- 7:43Speaker 1: in the soft buy at least the direction. So not
- 7:47Speaker 1: ideal for the Cubs. Who knows what happens this weekend.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think this weekend is big for a lot of teams,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and we'll get.
- 7:53Speaker 2: To some of them.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Yeah, you kind of finished my thought there of just
- 7:58Speaker 3: the Royals are not kind of the Royals you thought
- 8:03Speaker 3: of maybe when I'm trying to think of what age
- 8:07Speaker 3: range that would be. But obviously they won a World
- 8:09Speaker 3: Series title ten years ago, went through a down period
- 8:13Speaker 3: and they've built kind of this interesting sort of team.
- 8:19Speaker 3: They don't just like concede. I mean, clearly they're not
- 8:23Speaker 3: as good as like or consistent as the Brewers have been,
- 8:26Speaker 3: but they're also not like the Pirates. And listening to
- 8:30Speaker 3: some of the answers yesterday in that postgame clubhouse, you
- 8:36Speaker 3: get the sense of, well, look what the Tigers did
- 8:40Speaker 3: last year. I mean, the Royals were a playoff team
- 8:43Speaker 3: last year. They have this spectacular player as a centerpiece
- 8:47Speaker 3: in Bobby Wood Junior. They have a lot of good pitching.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I believe Ken Rosenthal or colleague wrote that Lugo is
- 8:55Speaker 3: someone who the Royals would like to have a good
- 8:59Speaker 3: relationship with going forward. You know, they expect to compete
- 9:03Speaker 3: next year. He acknowledged that he's had conversations with the
- 9:09Speaker 3: front office. So if I'm the Cubs, I'm maybe circling
- 9:14Speaker 3: another team and they've been doing it for a long
- 9:16Speaker 3: time here in the Miami Marlins.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think the Marlins could look in
- 9:23Speaker 1: a different a bunch of different ways. That there's one
- 9:27Speaker 1: name that's just been out there since the winter. Really,
- 9:31Speaker 1: they weren't going to trade him in the winter because
- 9:32Speaker 1: they needed him to get healthy. But Sandy al Contra
- 9:36Speaker 1: is the name everyone talks about. You know, I think
- 9:41Speaker 1: both of us have heard enough recently that it's I
- 9:45Speaker 1: think he had a good start recently, there wasn't a
- 9:48Speaker 1: lot of good swing and miss in that start. From
- 9:53Speaker 1: my personal opinion and everything that I've heard around the league,
- 9:58Speaker 1: he just isn't that attractive to team teams looking to
- 10:01Speaker 1: win now.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I don't think people.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Believe that he's a bad pitcher or that he can't
- 10:08Speaker 1: get back on track. I think what we're hearing is,
- 10:11Speaker 1: if you're competing now, adding Sandy al Contra to the mix,
- 10:15Speaker 1: isn't something that is an obvious upgrade to your rotation
- 10:19Speaker 1: that maybe maybe it's not like a uh. I don't
- 10:23Speaker 1: want to call it a project because he's he's had success,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but it's a there's work to be done to get
- 10:28Speaker 1: him back on track.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And I don't think it's a quick fix.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I think it's a I think project. You back, you
- 10:34Speaker 3: probably could use that with all due respect. Once you
- 10:36Speaker 3: say with all due respect, you can say whatever you want.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Joe Madden likes to quote, well, was that Will Ferrell movie?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Whatever it was? But yeah, I just think if if
- 10:49Speaker 3: you're a contending team, you only have so many trade chips,
- 10:54Speaker 3: your budget only goes so far. There's only so many
- 10:58Speaker 3: roster spots or rotation spots available, and I think to
- 11:04Speaker 3: place that heavy of a bet on a guy who
- 11:07Speaker 3: did not throw a pitch all the last year, and
- 11:10Speaker 3: who has struggled for most of this year and is
- 11:16Speaker 3: coming from a very unstable organization, it doesn't line up
- 11:24Speaker 3: in my mind. I think there's another name though, in
- 11:27Speaker 3: that rotation, and you can go all the way back
- 11:29Speaker 3: to Lazardo talks this past winner. There's a lot of
- 11:34Speaker 3: familiarity there, and I think there's a kind of underclub
- 11:36Speaker 3: controlled pitcher who may make the most sense. What do
- 11:41Speaker 3: you think, Sota?
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Edward Cabrera has been really good lately.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Just I think he's striking guys out. He's not walking
- 11:51Speaker 1: as many guys of late. He's got the type of
- 11:54Speaker 1: stuff that's kind of tantalizing. I think you talk about
- 11:58Speaker 1: under control pitchers who haven't fully reached their potential. This
- 12:04Speaker 1: is the type of guy I think the Cubs would
- 12:06Speaker 1: love to get their hands on. I think a few
- 12:08Speaker 1: teams would love to get their hands on Frankly, but
- 12:11Speaker 1: but you know, we're talking about the Cubs here, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: I think we kind of know that they they want.
- 12:16Speaker 1: They've been talking about him along with Lozardo and other
- 12:20Speaker 1: Marlins pictures. Since since November, they've been digging in on
- 12:24Speaker 1: this guy. I think they like him. I think they
- 12:26Speaker 1: like them a lot. I think if there's an under
- 12:30Speaker 1: control picture that's realistically available, this may be or not
- 12:35Speaker 1: only realistically available, but like eminently like very available. Right Like,
- 12:40Speaker 1: the Marlins are trading guys and they're willing to move
- 12:43Speaker 1: pretty much anyone. I think this may be the guy
- 12:46Speaker 1: that's at the top of the list for the Cubs.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I think they really would like to get him. There's
- 12:53Speaker 1: I think he's trending in the right direction. I think
- 12:56Speaker 1: there are little tweaks that the Cubs can make or
- 12:58Speaker 1: adjustments that the Cubs could make. They could, you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: get him to an even higher level.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Well, he's got the type of stuff that makes you think,
- 13:06Speaker 1: oh yeah, this is a top three in a rotation.
- 13:10Speaker 1: It hasn't fully all clicked yet, but I think that's
- 13:13Speaker 1: exactly the kind of guy you want to get. That's
- 13:16Speaker 1: that's how they're thinking, is they you know, they they
- 13:19Speaker 1: want to they want to acquire the guy before he
- 13:21Speaker 1: becomes a stud U. But it's not going to be cheap.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's a steal, but you get him
- 13:27Speaker 1: for nothing. But that's the type of deal you could
- 13:29Speaker 1: see some big prospects being moved and then it almost
- 13:33Speaker 1: immediately paying off and saying, Wow, I didn't know how
- 13:36Speaker 1: good this guy was.
- 13:39Speaker 3: No doubt. And when you look at the landscape. We've
- 13:43Speaker 3: talked about this before, but people in the industry are
- 13:46Speaker 3: talking about it as well, like there's no cc Sabathia
- 13:50Speaker 3: walking through that door, Randy Johnson, uh, that type of
- 13:56Speaker 3: like no doubt slam dunk Ace. It's sort of this
- 14:00Speaker 3: appearing from the game anyway, but it's not really an
- 14:04Speaker 3: available option for any team at this point. So I
- 14:09Speaker 3: think you have to sort of be open minded here.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And you know, Santa Guitar is a much better headline,
- 14:20Speaker 3: no doubt. And I get why people are really interested
- 14:23Speaker 3: in him, like we just wrote about him, like we're
- 14:25Speaker 3: going to keep writing about him, But Edward Cabrera might
- 14:29Speaker 3: be better positioned to deliver the real impact you're looking
- 14:32Speaker 3: for the rest of the way.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he slots into the playoff rotation immediately
- 14:37Speaker 1: if you acquire, and then there's a chance that he
- 14:39Speaker 1: could be even better than what you think. Let's take
- 14:43Speaker 1: a quick break and talk about another team that's kind
- 14:45Speaker 1: of on the fence, and we'll see if they're selling
- 14:47Speaker 1: or not.
- 14:48Speaker 4: You know about the best place to buy, sell, trade,
- 14:51Speaker 4: or look for that special card in your world. It's
- 14:53Speaker 4: called Arena Club and aer Kratz just went through a
- 14:56Speaker 4: little slab pack experience and.
- 14:58Speaker 2: You went big. You went for the Ruby.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I love it.
- 15:01Speaker 5: I love clicking on the Ruby pack and knowing that
- 15:03Speaker 5: I'm going to open something that is going to be epic.
- 15:06Speaker 5: H I got a cal Ricans junior autographed one of
- 15:10Speaker 5: forty two. I'm keeping it right now, but I would
- 15:13Speaker 5: love to have it in my hands, so I might
- 15:15Speaker 5: even have them send it to me already graded everything,
- 15:17Speaker 5: taking care for me.
- 15:18Speaker 2: That's right.
- 15:19Speaker 4: You want to hang it up and stare at it
- 15:20Speaker 4: all day, go for it. But if you're in there
- 15:23Speaker 4: to get something else or to sell it.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Away, you can do that.
- 15:25Speaker 4: They've got the buyback program, or you can put it
- 15:28Speaker 4: on the marketplace yourself. Tons of options. This is where
- 15:31Speaker 4: the best cards live. It's arenaclub dot com. Slash foul
- 15:34Speaker 4: and use the code foul for twenty percent off your
- 15:36Speaker 4: first slab pack, or if you'd like to purchase a card,
- 15:40Speaker 4: twenty percent off your first card purchase again arenaclub dot
- 15:43Speaker 4: com slash foh u L use code fo u L.
- 15:50Speaker 1: You know this this time of year, Patrick is fascinating
- 15:53Speaker 1: in the sense that what teams decide could flip in
- 15:58Speaker 1: the matter of days. The Arizona Diamondbacks swept Saint Louis
- 16:04Speaker 1: and then they were swept I'm not even sure who
- 16:07Speaker 1: swept them.
- 16:07Speaker 2: I just know they were swept Houston, that's right, and
- 16:11Speaker 2: then they were swept by Houston.
- 16:14Speaker 1: It completely changes the thinking, like, this is this is
- 16:18Speaker 1: the team. I believe they're five and a half out
- 16:21Speaker 1: now of a wild card.
- 16:25Speaker 3: They're three under five and a half back playing Pittsburgh
- 16:31Speaker 3: this weekend, so theoretically it could could again, but they're really,
- 16:38Speaker 3: you know, given themselves, like almost no margin.
- 16:40Speaker 2: For air here.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, this is this is a team that I
- 16:45Speaker 1: think you kind of have to assume.
- 16:49Speaker 2: The way they're set up. They're there.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It's a smart front office, it's an opportunistic front office.
- 16:55Speaker 1: It's a front office that wants to compete. Absolutely, an
- 16:59Speaker 1: ownership group that wants to compete compete. But I think
- 17:02Speaker 1: they're also realistic and they're not going to They're not
- 17:06Speaker 1: going to be aggressive buyers, but also if they have
- 17:10Speaker 1: three obvious players they could sell who are on expiring
- 17:15Speaker 1: deals to them or pictures. I you know, Zach Gallon
- 17:20Speaker 1: is the type of guy that I would you could
- 17:23Speaker 1: compare him to Sandy el Contra in the sense like
- 17:25Speaker 1: this is a guy people were talking about as an
- 17:27Speaker 1: ace in the past and he's just not there right now.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I feel like it's a different situation though there's not
- 17:35Speaker 1: the you're not talking about like an innings limit because
- 17:40Speaker 1: he's coming off a major injury. Uh, it doesn't feel
- 17:43Speaker 1: as off, although the stuff may be slightly deteriorating, there
- 17:48Speaker 1: are questions, but still an intriguing guy to pursue, and
- 17:54Speaker 1: certainly a guy that is as competitive as anyone and
- 17:57Speaker 1: would be really nice to add to a layoff rotation.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Zach Gallen, Merrill Kelly. I'm sure teams
- 18:05Speaker 3: have preferences. There are pros and cons for each one.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I think, you know, beggars also can't be choosers sometimes,
- 18:12Speaker 3: like there's I think either one of those guys you
- 18:16Speaker 3: could plug in. You know, Gallen has that like game
- 18:22Speaker 3: one starter potential, he's had, you know, that profile or
- 18:26Speaker 3: pedigree to an extent earlier in his career. I'm not
- 18:30Speaker 3: sure he's there right now. But again, this is a
- 18:33Speaker 3: guy you maybe he just shows up. He's a guy
- 18:36Speaker 3: who goes off of feel something clicks, and he just
- 18:41Speaker 3: like gets in a groove at the right time. I
- 18:44Speaker 3: don't think that's unreasonable. I get that, you know, some
- 18:49Speaker 3: of these rental pitchers the cups might not be super
- 18:51Speaker 3: high on, but also what they're doing is not super
- 18:55Speaker 3: sustainable and you kind of have to, you know, make
- 19:00Speaker 3: compromises here or there. And I think we talked about
- 19:03Speaker 3: this in the context of a Uhenno Suarez becomes in Diamondbacks,
- 19:08Speaker 3: have you know, long standing connections, they're going to be
- 19:13Speaker 3: in that mix whatever the Diamondbacks ultimately decide to do.
- 19:20Speaker 3: And I'm with you, like they're kind of an unusual
- 19:24Speaker 3: operation and that they don't tank, but they've tried to
- 19:30Speaker 3: legitimately compete with the Dodgers, which is very admirable. But
- 19:34Speaker 3: also sometimes the season tells you what to do and
- 19:39Speaker 3: that you can't keep clinging to that. You have to
- 19:42Speaker 3: salvage something even if you still you know, leave a
- 19:49Speaker 3: little narrow room to try and get back in the race,
- 19:53Speaker 3: so you don't totally. You creater your team, but that
- 19:58Speaker 3: point is is very much fast approaching for them.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:03Speaker 1: I like Kelly is he's kind of like a metronome
- 20:06Speaker 1: picture like, he's not like a going to dominate it
- 20:10Speaker 1: look like an ace or anything like that, but he
- 20:12Speaker 1: could make a playoff start for you, and you feel
- 20:14Speaker 1: comfortable with him doing that. These guys are the aces
- 20:18Speaker 1: Patrick that we're going to talk about. I don't I
- 20:21Speaker 1: don't foresee any of them being moved, but there's a
- 20:25Speaker 1: chance there's that small possibility, some more than others. For me,
- 20:33Speaker 1: the best one is Mackenzie Gore. If somehow you can
- 20:38Speaker 1: pride Mackenzie Gore, you you pay the price because now
- 20:42Speaker 1: you've added an ace to your rotation. He's under control
- 20:46Speaker 1: through twenty twenty seven. It just I mean, he's he's
- 20:51Speaker 1: taking that step forward to go from good picture to
- 20:55Speaker 1: you know, one of the like he's pitching like a
- 20:57Speaker 1: top ten pitcher in the game. Now you have, I
- 21:01Speaker 1: mean to be able to push down Boyd and showed
- 21:04Speaker 1: him anaga. If you're capable of doing that by acquiring
- 21:07Speaker 1: someone that can do that, that that's now you're just
- 21:10Speaker 1: like the debate, it's not just they have the best
- 21:13Speaker 1: record in the league.
- 21:14Speaker 2: It's like, let's talk about them as the best team
- 21:16Speaker 2: in baseball? How do that there?
- 21:18Speaker 1: That's very easy discussion to have, and it's a good
- 21:21Speaker 1: debate to have you add someone like that. It's gonna
- 21:24Speaker 1: cost a ton. I just don't think the Nationals are
- 21:27Speaker 1: going to give him up right now. They're so in flux.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I mean, you know, they're blown away. Maybe they do it,
- 21:34Speaker 1: but it's hard to envision. That's a guy that I
- 21:38Speaker 1: don't see being pried away. The Twins sound like they're selling.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Joe.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Ryan would be a hell of a get also maybe
- 21:47Speaker 1: hard to get, but I do believe the Cubs have
- 21:49Speaker 1: talked about him. There's been discussions about him. He'd also
- 21:52Speaker 1: fit in the front of their rotation like that. That's
- 21:55Speaker 1: a guy that I would just keep an eye on
- 21:57Speaker 1: because if the Twins decide, like, hey, it's time to
- 22:00Speaker 1: really be aggressive with this, so I think it'd be
- 22:03Speaker 1: more would make more sense to move him than it
- 22:06Speaker 1: would move Gore, just because it just seems like Gore
- 22:11Speaker 1: is like right there at the top of the pitching
- 22:14Speaker 1: list as far as best pitchers in baseball. Ryan doesn't
- 22:17Speaker 1: get that much love, get that type of love. But
- 22:19Speaker 1: he's pretty damn good as well.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Either of those guys I.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Think just changes the dynamic of the team. I think
- 22:26Speaker 1: Ryan's probably more gettable. I'm not sure if either our moving.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I liked the phraseiuse there in flux because that
- 22:36Speaker 3: kind of describes this whole grouping we have here. In
- 22:38Speaker 3: our pre show notes, it was ace ish question Mark
- 22:45Speaker 3: was kind of this tier of picture of Mackenzie Gore, Joe, Ryan,
- 22:49Speaker 3: and Dylan Cees. You know, I think having an interim
- 22:54Speaker 3: GM in Washington really makes me doubt the Nationals would
- 22:58Speaker 3: actually go through with that. The Twins are up for sale.
- 23:01Speaker 3: They're kind of a hard team to read. Like they're from,
- 23:04Speaker 3: you know, their president there, Derek Falvey's from like that
- 23:08Speaker 3: Cleveland tree of sort of just you know, opportunistic, like
- 23:13Speaker 3: not really you know, fully in or fully out going
- 23:17Speaker 3: to try and extract absolute, you know, maximum value. And
- 23:22Speaker 3: then I mean, if I'll say Dylan Ceese didn't play
- 23:26Speaker 3: for a team run by AJ Preller, like I don't
- 23:28Speaker 3: think we'd hear his name out there like that. I
- 23:30Speaker 3: just don't get that. I know a J. Preller is
- 23:32Speaker 3: working twenty four to seven and he's got you know
- 23:35Speaker 3: the huge whiteboard, I'm sure, and it's constantly watching video
- 23:39Speaker 3: sending text messages. But like I realized Dylan Cees is
- 23:44Speaker 3: free agent at the end of the year, I realized
- 23:46Speaker 3: the Padres have had some ownership questions as well some
- 23:52Speaker 3: various payroll concerns. But I just don't if you're trying
- 23:57Speaker 3: to make the playoffs this year, I have a hard
- 23:59Speaker 3: time seeing the snare in which you subtract Dylan Cease
- 24:02Speaker 3: and get a lot better, particularly because he is a rental, Like,
- 24:06Speaker 3: what are you going to get for that? That's kind
- 24:10Speaker 3: of where I'm at with that group. Don't see them,
- 24:15Speaker 3: not only don't see them coming to Chicago, don't see
- 24:17Speaker 3: them getting traded period.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Yeah, a team that is going to be trading players.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Pirates. They have a trio of names that are
- 24:27Speaker 1: that are interesting, and I think one starter is more
- 24:31Speaker 1: interesting than the other. Mitch Keller always been tantalizing talent,
- 24:35Speaker 1: really good pitcher, also under control. Andrew Heaney isn't It
- 24:41Speaker 1: doesn't move the needle for me.
- 24:42Speaker 2: I get it.
- 24:43Speaker 1: They need pitching, so if he's available, and that's what
- 24:47Speaker 1: you can get. But he of the pitchers that we've
- 24:50Speaker 1: named that that are playing decently well, Like he's probably
- 24:55Speaker 1: lower on the list for me. I get it, you
- 24:57Speaker 1: need pitching to go after him, but is he Is
- 25:00Speaker 1: he that much better than Colin Ray? Right now you
- 25:02Speaker 1: need someone that just fills the spot because of Tyne's injury.
- 25:06Speaker 1: But Mitch Keller is interesting because I think he's solid,
- 25:11Speaker 1: but also the type of guy you get him into
- 25:13Speaker 1: the Cub system, maybe he takes it another level. David
- 25:17Speaker 1: Bednar has always been on the radar. I feel like
- 25:19Speaker 1: every like whenever when when he broke out that year
- 25:22Speaker 1: he broke out and it seemed like he saved his
- 25:25Speaker 1: best for the Cubs. Uh, there was a stretch there
- 25:28Speaker 1: where when he came in it was like, Okay, the
- 25:29Speaker 1: game's over. I think he's a little older and the
- 25:34Speaker 1: stuff is in you know, quote unquote decline, but he's
- 25:38Speaker 1: still he's still a great reliever. And if he's not
- 25:41Speaker 1: your obvious closer, he's he is a co closer, probably
- 25:46Speaker 1: with Polentia if you can pry him away.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like Keller is kind of illustrative of
- 25:58Speaker 3: just this market at large, of you know, he was
- 26:01Speaker 3: an all start out that long ago. He's having a
- 26:03Speaker 3: good season on a bad team. But you know, the
- 26:07Speaker 3: Pirates are under pressure here. This front office has been
- 26:09Speaker 3: on the hot seat for a long time. They're gonna
- 26:11Speaker 3: try and just ring every last bit of prospect value
- 26:17Speaker 3: out of this deal. And you have to take on
- 26:20Speaker 3: a significant amount of contract in terms of years and dollars,
- 26:24Speaker 3: and like, if you're the Cubs, is that overall cost
- 26:29Speaker 3: gonna be worth it for a guy who you know
- 26:34Speaker 3: probably isn't jumping the line in front of shoulder or
- 26:37Speaker 3: boy to start a playoff game, you're gonna be getting
- 26:43Speaker 3: tie own back as a nice piece. I think maybe
- 26:48Speaker 3: you aim a little higher or think a little shorter
- 26:51Speaker 3: term here. Like we always say the cupsould spend more money.
- 26:55Speaker 3: We're not like worried about that. But as a baseball operation,
- 26:59Speaker 3: if you're trying to like maneuver this here, if you're
- 27:03Speaker 3: not going to be spending like the Dodgers, like, is
- 27:05Speaker 3: Mitch Keller the guy you want to build around at
- 27:09Speaker 3: this moment, Because once you do that, you're taking away
- 27:13Speaker 3: from the future in a way that's not as obvious
- 27:16Speaker 3: as just trading a prospect, And when you combine them both,
- 27:21Speaker 3: it's a lot. Maybe that one comes down close to
- 27:22Speaker 3: the deadline and it starts to make more sense. But
- 27:25Speaker 3: that was kind of our read at this moment.
- 27:28Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, let's take another break and get back
- 27:30Speaker 1: to some other names to keep an eye on. Nothing

- 28:39Speaker 1: A team that probably wasn't expected to be among the
- 28:43Speaker 1: sellers at the start of the season, but very clearly
- 28:46Speaker 1: sellers now, the Baltimore Orioals. I believe they've already made
- 28:50Speaker 1: at least one move and they're likely to make more.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Charlie Morton is someone that has had a lot of experience,
- 29:01Speaker 1: a lot of postseason experience.
- 29:02Speaker 2: He's pitched in big games.
- 29:04Speaker 1: He's pitched really well in big games that can't be overlooked.
- 29:10Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:10Speaker 1: He's he's got a five fifty eight e R.
- 29:14Speaker 2: That's not good.
- 29:15Speaker 1: It's a it's a really bad, but over his like
- 29:18Speaker 1: a nine ish last nine ish starts. I believe he
- 29:22Speaker 1: may have even been moved out of the rotation. I
- 29:25Speaker 1: can't maybe I may be wrong on that, but.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe it was like late April they moved
- 29:31Speaker 3: him out and then you know, not long after they
- 29:35Speaker 3: fire brand and hide Morton works his way back. But
- 29:41Speaker 3: I believe, well, first start out of the Altar break
- 29:44Speaker 3: was just bad.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah, the first start out of the Altar break was
- 29:48Speaker 1: really bad for him. Other than that, he's like for
- 29:54Speaker 1: i'd say for a few like outside of that awful April,
- 29:58Speaker 1: he's been pretty good. I mean since like even counting
- 30:03Speaker 1: the bullpen like he has like an under four e
- 30:06Speaker 1: r a uh since since the very end of April.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Not dominant, not bad, like the type of veteran presence
- 30:16Speaker 1: that you could you could put in a rotation that
- 30:18Speaker 1: desperately needs a starter. He's he's pitching better, and it
- 30:23Speaker 1: would be like, you know, bet on, bet on the
- 30:26Speaker 1: back of the baseball card, bet on the experience.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Uh, he's not completely done.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Uh so you know, is it is it the exciting move?
- 30:37Speaker 1: I don't know about that, but it's it feels like
- 30:40Speaker 1: one that when Jed Hoyer talks about trusting what a
- 30:45Speaker 1: guy's done, Uh that you know, Charlie Morton could fit
- 30:49Speaker 1: that mold.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and we're also in this period here where every
- 30:54Speaker 3: start is is magnified. You're looking not just that the
- 30:58Speaker 3: mattress was just simply is a guy walking off the
- 31:01Speaker 3: mound like, you know, shaking his arm or holding his shoulder.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And Orioles starter, Zach Efflyn just came off the injury list,
- 31:10Speaker 3: looked pretty good. It was a back injury that you know,
- 31:15Speaker 3: seemed to be more manageable than say a troubling our issue.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Guy's got some nice postseason experience. I just seems like
- 31:25Speaker 3: one of those kind of Cubs infrastructure guys. And I
- 31:30Speaker 3: believe he's rental, you know, not gonna you know, kind
- 31:33Speaker 3: of have to break the bank there. So definitely Orioles
- 31:37Speaker 3: a team on the radar here.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I would look at I mean, Zach Eflin
- 31:44Speaker 1: looks like a pretty good picture to me. Like a
- 31:47Speaker 1: nice addition. How about the White Sox Patrick brad Keller,
- 31:53Speaker 1: Chris Flexen, now Adrian Houser.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Why not started Versus showed him ANAGA like, let's see
- 32:02Speaker 3: that'll be a classic, you know, showcase type of event
- 32:06Speaker 3: for mister Houser.
- 32:09Speaker 1: We got a guy with a seventeen point seven percent
- 32:13Speaker 1: strikeout rate but a one eighty nine era.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Solid ground ball rate.
- 32:19Speaker 1: You know, like he's he's pitched for Craig Council before.
- 32:23Speaker 1: H you know, are you betting on that's that's the
- 32:28Speaker 1: guy that maybe the opposite of Charlie Morton. It's like,
- 32:31Speaker 1: I'm not sure, do we just see his best of
- 32:33Speaker 1: the season as far as results, it's a risk.
- 32:37Speaker 2: It is also a depth move.
- 32:39Speaker 1: It would be it would be like similar to just
- 32:42Speaker 1: adding another Colin Ray to get you through a couple
- 32:44Speaker 1: of games, get you through the season.
- 32:47Speaker 2: This is not someone you'd say he's starting in the playoffs.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But you know what, like we said a lot that
- 32:53Speaker 1: they need arms, they need depth, they need they need pitchers,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and and he if he continues to pitch, well, if
- 32:59Speaker 1: they're seeing something that they're like, hey, I don't care
- 33:01Speaker 1: about the strike out right, this guy is getting weak
- 33:03Speaker 1: contact and in front of our defense it'll continue. Maybe
- 33:07Speaker 1: maybe it's enough to keep it to Adam and you know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: use him as a depth piece.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think you know, the White Socks are
- 33:17Speaker 3: a team we don't expect the Cubs to make deals with. Like,
- 33:21Speaker 3: let's be honest, there are teams like the Orioles or
- 33:25Speaker 3: the Marlins that makes sense, or there's a dialogue or
- 33:30Speaker 3: you know, in the case of the Dimexs, their relationships
- 33:33Speaker 3: the athletics kind of do their own thing. These are
- 33:37Speaker 3: two names that are going to be out there. Just
- 33:41Speaker 3: there's no metric for this. But this does not seem
- 33:43Speaker 3: very Cub like. That would be kind of what I'm
- 33:45Speaker 3: looking for here. I'm talking about Luis Severino and Mason Miller.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Just don't think the Cubs are the type to go
- 33:55Speaker 3: all in at this moment for a closer, given what
- 33:59Speaker 3: it take, and you know, seven sevenos, there's a lot
- 34:03Speaker 3: of money left on that deal. I know he's been
- 34:07Speaker 3: a lot better on the road than at home, but
- 34:10Speaker 3: just does not seem like, Okay, that's like our move
- 34:15Speaker 3: is going to be like a disgruntled pitcher in Sacramento. Yea,
- 34:20Speaker 3: and the guy who's been really good at times in
- 34:21Speaker 3: his career but has not have that steady long track
- 34:26Speaker 3: record that maybe'd be looking for. If you're gonna have
- 34:28Speaker 3: to give up a lot of prospects and commit a
- 34:32Speaker 3: lot of future dollars at this particular juncture of this
- 34:36Speaker 3: Cub's build.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I mean Mason Miller would be a great ad.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Absolutely is someone who probably hasn't had his best first
- 34:44Speaker 1: half the first few months of the season, and maybe
- 34:48Speaker 1: maybe the value isn't as high as it was a
- 34:50Speaker 1: year ago. So yes, great, it would be a great
- 34:53Speaker 1: ads still going to be an astronomical price, would be
- 34:55Speaker 1: my guess. And then Severino is I agree too much money?
- 34:59Speaker 1: I think to to like bet on that right now,
- 35:02Speaker 1: Like if you're if you're just betting on a guy
- 35:04Speaker 1: in an expiring contract thinking he has a better second
- 35:07Speaker 1: half or better final two months, Sure that's a lot
- 35:09Speaker 1: of money on that deal for someone that doesn't miss
- 35:12Speaker 1: bats anymore or misbats at a high rate. Uh, there's
- 35:16Speaker 1: a there's a group of bullpen arms that are really interesting.
- 35:20Speaker 1: There's a couple that you know are are on expiring deals.
- 35:25Speaker 1: And then some impact dudes that that would be under control. Finnegan,
- 35:30Speaker 1: We've talked about him, Kyle Finnigan, I think kind of
- 35:33Speaker 1: fits the Cubs system in a sense. Uh Uh, he
- 35:37Speaker 1: can play up in front of the Cubs defense.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Uh. Rys ill Iglesias is someone that.
- 35:43Speaker 1: May I don't want to say, but fits that mold
- 35:46Speaker 1: that we were talking about with Charlie Morton.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Right. Maybe he's not having his best season. Maybe this
- 35:51Speaker 2: stuff's not exactly where it was. Do they see something
- 35:54Speaker 2: that Okay? Projecting forward for the final two months, we
- 35:57Speaker 2: think he can be his best self.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Uh.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Those are two expiring deals I think would make sense,
- 36:03Speaker 1: are gettable, maybe not immediate. Insert them into Daniel Palencia's
- 36:09Speaker 1: role though, I maybe Iglesias because he's done that before,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but he's not pitching at that level right now.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Yeah. I think the other I think we can kind
- 36:18Speaker 3: of circle a division here, and that's kind of where
- 36:22Speaker 3: we started of what is the al Central gonna do?
- 36:25Speaker 3: We looked at the Royals starting pitching. There are two clubs,
- 36:31Speaker 3: in particular, the Twins and the Guardians that have those
- 36:34Speaker 3: back end relievers that are interesting. What do you got
- 36:38Speaker 3: on them? Yeah?
- 36:40Speaker 1: I mean Johann Duran is a stud just I mean,
- 36:45Speaker 1: one of the best relievers in baseball. If he's available,
- 36:49Speaker 1: you pay up the price and go get him. What
- 36:51Speaker 1: is it like he throws one hundred and two and
- 36:53Speaker 1: has an upper nineties like splitter or something like that.
- 36:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 36:58Speaker 1: The guy's a freak so good. I think gripping jacks,
- 37:01Speaker 1: you know like that. He's kind of interesting in the
- 37:03Speaker 1: sense that I don't think the era is great. Yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 1: he's got an above for R but he strikes guys
- 37:10Speaker 1: out like crazy, doesn't walk guys. I do wonder, like,
- 37:14Speaker 1: is that something that if he's playing with the Cubs,
- 37:17Speaker 1: plays up.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I don't watch him enough to feel one hundred percent
- 37:21Speaker 1: comfortable in saying that, But certainly two names that I
- 37:25Speaker 1: know are on the Cubs radar. Jacks is someone that
- 37:29Speaker 1: a lot of people in that front office like a lot.
- 37:32Speaker 1: I just don't, you know, can they prime away? Neither
- 37:36Speaker 1: of those guys are unexpiring deals. They're gonna cost a lot.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it was noticeable being in Minnesota before the All
- 37:44Speaker 3: Star break and just how the Cubs kind of talked
- 37:47Speaker 3: about the back end of their bullpen that are just
- 37:51Speaker 3: kind of like, well, if the Twins get a lead
- 37:55Speaker 3: and like kind of don't mess things up, like they've
- 37:59Speaker 3: just got like absolute, shut down, lockdown bullpen and that's
- 38:04Speaker 3: how that's how they win their games. But if they
- 38:08Speaker 3: don't get that early lead, if they don't catch the ball,
- 38:10Speaker 3: like they're they're in trouble. They're not that good. But
- 38:13Speaker 3: they have those like they have that October tipe A bullpen. Again,
- 38:19Speaker 3: everything we said earlier about Joe. Ryan generally applies to
- 38:23Speaker 3: that group.
- 38:23Speaker 5: And then.
- 38:25Speaker 3: I don't know, we're going back to Cleveland again, Emmanuel Class.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I don't know Guardians what they always sort of listen. Yes,
- 38:34Speaker 3: they're very they're sort of hard to deal with, right.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they're not gonna give them away for nothing. They're
- 38:42Speaker 1: not giving them away for nothing. But but they listen
- 38:44Speaker 1: on everyone. That's their philosophy. It doesn't matter what's going on,
- 38:47Speaker 1: they'll they'll listen on anyone, and especially when they're not
- 38:50Speaker 1: obviously in it. I don't know what their record is
- 38:54Speaker 1: off the top of my head, but I think they're
- 38:55Speaker 1: below five hundred or hovering around five hundred's that's the exactly.
- 39:00Speaker 2: When they'll listen on anyone. They'll they'll go any direction.
- 39:02Speaker 1: They they will trade guys with a ton of years left,
- 39:05Speaker 1: guys on expiring deals, whatever.
- 39:07Speaker 2: If you can give them value, they'll do it.
- 39:10Speaker 1: All, right, Patrick, Those are twenty two names of pictures
- 39:13Speaker 1: that you know, the Cubs are looking at everyone. We
- 39:16Speaker 1: could we could have made that list forty. Probably the
- 39:19Speaker 1: Cubs are looking at pitching. You know, there's there's plenty
- 39:24Speaker 1: of names to to consider. Over this next week. We
- 39:27Speaker 1: got a week left. There will be moves there. There
- 39:30Speaker 1: will be moves made. The Cubs will add pitching for sure.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I guess the only question is who it is, how
- 39:37Speaker 1: big of an impact. I think this this week has
- 39:42Speaker 1: shown us how important it is to add some more pitching,
- 39:46Speaker 1: both in the bullpen and in the in the rotation.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Really solidify that you have an opportunity to do something
- 39:54Speaker 1: fun this season. I don't think they. I think they
- 40:00Speaker 1: it the same way. I think the front office, I
- 40:01Speaker 1: think counsel, all those guys. I think they see it
- 40:03Speaker 1: the same way. And we're gonna hear some things this
- 40:06Speaker 1: week and see some see some stuff that hopefully the
- 40:09Speaker 1: fans enjoy. All Right, Patrick, thanks so much for listening
- 40:14Speaker 1: to everyone. This is Northside Territory. We'll we'll be back
- 40:17Speaker 1: with one more episode to wrap up this week and
- 40:19Speaker 1: then it's three the White Sox of that huge series
- 40:22Speaker 1: in Milwaukee right before the deadline. Thanks so much for
- 40:25Speaker 1: listening to everyone. Make sure to rate, review, subscribe, subscribe
- 40:28Speaker 1: to the YouTube channel, and subscribe to The Athletic, where
- 40:31Speaker 1: Patrick and I are on top of all things Cubs.
