  We're going to be talking about Tesla and not just about Tesla

  vehicles. We're going to be talking about

  Tesla battery life, He's so we all know about the range of

  Tesla's. 300-plus miles, we're all aware of that.

  But the batteries right now, there are thing that may need to

  be replaced at some point in your vehicle.

  Probably not most Tesla owners will never have to replace the

  battery but Elon Musk is been on record in the said that Tesla

  would be able to have a million-mile battery more than
• 3:05
  double of what Tesla drivers can expect today.

  So right now, half a million miles for your battery.

  That's cool. You know no one's ever.

  I think anyone's gonna get to half a million miles in their

  Tesla. Maybe I mean I know there's some

  hardcore Tesla drivers out there that could keep their car for a
• 3:25
  really long time and just see how long it can last.

  But there has been a paper published recently that his said
• 3:35
  hey our are batteries have On crazy over a million miles.

  That doesn't mean your car is going to last a million miles,

  right? So it doesn't mean that you can
• 3:46
  drive a million miles in your Tesla, in one charge, it means

  that the overall lifespan of your battery is going to last

  for a million miles if I could drive a million miles in a

  Tesla. Yeah, that would be pretty

  amazing, but that's not that's not the case.

  So earlier this month, the group of vets battery researchers and

  Del hosi University, which has an exclusive agreement with
• 4:12
  Tesla published a paper in the Journal of the electrochemical
• 4:16
  Society, describing a lithium ion battery, that should be able
• 4:20
  to power, an electric vehicle, for over 1 million miles while
• 4:25
  losing less than 10% of its energy capacity during its
• 4:28
  lifetime. That was in wired while you're
• 4:31
  down. dot-com is a story there, and Jeff Don who's the world's
• 4:37
  foremost lithium-ion researcher? He is part of this group that
• 4:43
  has made that claim. They posted the study as says
• 4:48
  full details of these cells including electrode,
• 4:51
  compositions, electrode loadings, electrolyte
• 4:53
  compositions, additives, used Etc, have been provided.
• 4:58
  This has been done so that others can recreate these cells
• 5:01
  and use them as benchmarks for their own R&D efforts.

  So this is an amazing thing. They have basically open source
• 5:12
  the formula for super long-lasting batteries.

  If you need to earn D this stuff and you need to make your own
• 5:20
  battery. That's cool.

  Anybody out there. Can do it.

  Any vehicle provider can do it. and that being said, right after

  this happened, right after this was published Tesla, Got a

  patent for a lithium ion battery that is very similar to the one

  described in the paper. I'll have more about that right

  described in the paper. Use lithium nickel manganese,

  Cobalt oxide or any MC for the battery's, positive electrode,

  the cathode and artificial graphite for its negative
• 6:25
  electrodes. The anode the electrolyte which
• 6:28
  fairies lithium ions between the electrode terminals consists of

  a lithium salt blended with other compounds.

  The nmc graphite chemistry is have been known to increase the

  energy density and lifespan of lithium ion batteries, almost

  So it's a really cool article. But these Tesla batteries, let's

  Don's team was tasked with creating, and Lithium-ion

  batteries that can store more energy and have a longer
• 7:33
  lifetime than commercially available batteries and electric
• 7:37
  cars, the metrics, translate to how far you can drive your car
• 7:41
  on a single charge and how many charges you can get out of the
• 7:45
  battery before it stops working. It basically just runs out of
• 7:49
  Eventually. The trade-off between energy
• 7:52
  density and Battery Lifetime, and if you want more of one, you
• 7:56
  get less of the other and the group was responsible for the
• 8:00
  impossible task of overcoming the trade-off.

  So right now, Tesla's new cars can get about 370 miles per
• 8:10
  charge which is beyond the range of electric vehicles from other
• 8:16
  companies at this point and based on the typical American
• 8:21
  commute, most EV owners use only about a quarter of a charge per
• 8:26
  day. What to make something like?
• 8:31
  A fleet of Robotics a robotic trucks or taxis, you'll need a
• 8:37
  battery that can handle a full discharge every day.
• 8:43
  And you'll need those batteries to last a super long time,
• 8:47
  because it's not about commuting.
• 8:50
  From one place to another to your work and back to the store
• 8:54
  and back, Etc. This is about handling.

  Hundreds of thousands of people every single day as I was
• 9:02
  driving, hundreds of thousands of miles per year for some of
• 9:07
  these long-haul trucks. So, these batteries have to last
• 9:12
  a really long time. And since this new chemistry,
• 9:18
  500,000 miles isn't enough with the old chemistry so they needed
• 9:22
  something else, they doubled it, they made it a million miles per
• 9:26
  battery. The million mile battery will be
• 9:30
  here soon. My friends and it will be in
• 9:33
  production at the Tesla gigafactory.

  Everything is coming together and the business model for Tesla
• 9:43
  isn't just going to be cars for you.

  combination and long-haul trucks and it's all happening, this is
