- 0:00There was tire controversy at Bristol, so that was a big deal.
- 0:04Little Bristol. Were they always getting the
- 0:06wrecks and stuff? Like that, the half mile, Yeah.
- 0:08I like Bristol. Dudes, tires were just getting
- 0:10eroded. They had to manage tires.
- 0:13Yeah, baby. There's all kinds of tire fall
- 0:17off all over the track debris. Every guys were blowing off
- 0:19tires. What happened?
- 0:21Basically they used the same tire.
- 0:24This is really probably boring to a lot of people.
- 0:26They used a different type of it's kind of like a baseball
- 0:30deal with with a resin rosin, a rosin bag.
- 0:33They use a different type of treatment on the track that
- 0:36caused more tire wear. So early on, dudes are just
- 0:40blowing tires. Scary.
- 0:42And so Denny Hamlin won. Martin Truex finished his
- 0:46second. So it was the veteran drivers
- 0:48that had the years of experience on short tracks of how to manage
- 0:52their tires, who were able to succeed and not just go out
- 0:55there and just hammer down and drive as fast as possible and
- 0:59switch it up. This was a little more about
- 1:01experience, which a lot of the drivers and teams really like
- 1:05this because they feel like this car has dumbed down the product
- 1:08where just everybody has the same car and you just go and
- 1:13there's a lot of luck. Do you like the track position?
- 1:16I do, yes. So do I I think it's
- 1:17interesting. But.
- 1:19I like when they go fast too though.
- 1:20Well, here's what I'll say. I am not, I am not the person
- 1:24who grew up watching NASCAR. So the Super speedways to me are
- 1:29the most fun, but they're not the best judge of a driver
- 1:34'cause there's so much luck involved if if half the field
- 1:36gets wrecked and it's not their fault.
- 1:38Like there's usually more random winners at the Super speedways,
- 1:42whereas some of these tracks where it's more about truly the
- 1:45drivers creeping in, creeping up.
- 1:47Yeah, usually the cream rises to the top on some of these other
- 1:50tracks and. It's hard to get from like way
- 1:52in the back to get to the front in Bristol.
- 1:54Well, especially with this particular car.
- 1:59Yeah, yeah, it's it's that, to me is interesting, man.
- 2:02You know what? I like to pick your brain about
- 2:03that, dude. This is also me for two years
- 2:06really now getting into this sport, and I was into it a lot
- 2:09in Michigan because we had the track there and there's two Cup
- 2:13races. So I did cover a lot of NASCAR.
- 2:16This is what, 17 years ago, but I never followed it like this.
- 2:19What I find really interesting about NASCAR is how they look at
- 2:23cheating. Because as a person who grew up
- 2:27mostly a baseball guy, we look at cheating in baseball.
- 2:30Or at least we used to with steroids.
- 2:32And it was the end of the world. End of.
- 2:34The world, Charlie. These people are just go away
- 2:37and never come back. And then 20 years later we
- 2:38changed our mind. But still, football's a sport
- 2:41where it's like if you're doing juice, OK, everybody did juice
- 2:44in the 80s. four-game suspension these days, Who cares?
- 2:47NASCAR. I've realized this from the fans
- 2:50and even the the crews and whatnot.
- 2:53They embrace a level of cheating that they would almost call
- 2:58engineering because think about it, it's about what you can get
- 3:02away with from a creative standpoint.
- 3:04And it's also the sport was literally started on running
- 3:08moonshine. So think about it, the whole
- 3:10sport was started on cheating the government because you're
- 3:13you're tricking up cars to run moonshine in the South.
- 3:17So like that's the whole sport was created on a level of
- 3:20cheating. I like it.
- 3:21That's what I'm saying. So they actually want the
- 3:25engineers and the crew chiefs to be able to trick up the car and
- 3:29have an advantage. And a lot of people don't like
- 3:32the fact that the cars are all the same now, which I think is
- 3:35very interesting When you look at how cheating is is perceived
- 3:39in different sports. In NASCAR, it's embraced like
- 3:43the best stories. When people go on Dale Junior's
- 3:45download the best stories, Are the guys finally telling each
- 3:49other how they cheated? Like, give me an example of how
- 3:51they cheated, where people are like, God, I just got away with
- 3:54this. They No one knew.
- 3:55I mean, dude, it could be like, was it last year?
- 3:59Denny Hamlin wins the race. Where was that?
- 4:02Was it Martinsville? I can't remember where it was.
- 4:04Early on. He wins the race.
- 4:07They find a little piece of tape on the car and they had to give
- 4:10up the trophy. He had to.
- 4:12He had to basically he he won. He was in Victory Lane.
- 4:15They gave him the trophy. He goes home.
- 4:17They go no you didn't win. You had a little piece of tape
- 4:18on the car. So what I'm saying is just over
- 4:21the years the little things it could be 1/4 inch little here it
- 4:24could be you shave down this you just you're trying to add a
- 4:27little downforce here. What I'm saying is everybody did
- 4:32it and it was kind of who could creatively do it the best and
- 4:35and get away with it. So it was looked upon more as as
- 4:40ingenuity was the word I was looking for, not engineering.
- 4:42Ingenuity is the NASCAR term for cheating and it was always there
- 4:47and people kind of like the fact that folks would try to get away
- 4:51with it. Interesting.
- 4:53Do you, do you would you rather the cars be a little bit
- 4:55different allow a little bit of just like some sort of?
- 5:00A Jeep put a Jeep put a Jeep tire.
- 5:02Just one Jeep. Like would you want that or do
- 5:04you like all the cars the same? I think I'd want a little more
- 5:07of the old school. Yeah, I'm more old school
- 5:09creative. And all the old school guys that
- 5:11I really like when they keep asking for this, it makes me
- 5:15feel like that it was and and it was.
- 5:19But I also was into NASCAR when it was really big in O6O7.
- 5:23When Dale Junior, like NASCAR, peaked around O 8 from from a
- 5:28viewership standpoint and that's after Dale Senior died, it was
- 5:31literally because Dale Junior was doing cribs and he's super
- 5:34popular, had the bud car. Budweiser was running him around
- 5:39everywhere. Yeah.
- 5:40Is it the eight car? His was the eight, yeah, for
- 5:43Budweiser. There's nothing old school about
- 5:45NASCAR, though. Like, you know about this.
- 5:48I only know from watching, like, no prep kings, like the race
- 5:52show that they have on Discovery, whatever.
- 5:54But I mean, even those guys that are racing for $500 that the
- 5:59computer analytics and gauging the wind force and the tire
- 6:04contact and everything like that, it's insane.
- 6:07I would only imagine it's like 100 times more NASCAR, right?
- 6:11Everything is computerized. They have readouts for every
- 6:14mechanism in that car, right? Right.
- 6:16What I'm saying though is that the old school was how they tech
- 6:21inspected the car, whereas now they drive it into a essentially
- 6:25a shed that has like the 360 image.
- 6:27Yeah. Like you're getting, like you're
- 6:29going get an MRI or. Something so back in the day
- 6:32they'd say we can add a little little quarter inch this year.
- 6:35That little bad boy off? Could we get away with it?
- 6:37Yeah, I like that. I like that, man, that that
- 6:40car's running hot. Well, he shaved a little part
- 6:42off. And who's watching?
- 6:44Like is it Angel Hernandez up in the tower?
- 6:46No, I'm saying they drive their car into a shed that has 360.
- 6:51Inches yes. I thought that's how they'd
- 6:54figure. Out where they It's like a car
- 6:55wash, but it's like checking everything.
- 6:57Here's a good one. Just happened about 3 weeks ago.
- 6:59This this shows you So Joey Logano, two time champ, awesome
- 7:05driver. Did you hear what he got caught
- 7:06with a couple weeks ago? So basically this is how this is
- 7:10what I'll talk about. The advantages, just the small
- 7:13advantages they're looking for. They tricked out his driving
- 7:16gloves for qualifying. So if you if you were to hold
- 7:21his glove potentially in a certain spot and his gloves were
- 7:25webbed that he'd get an advantage in terms of arrow with
- 7:30the with basically the wind in the car for just qualifying, all
- 7:33he was trying to do was have the best qualifying lap.
- 7:36So you're not even going to wear those in the in the race.
- 7:38But that's what I'm talking about the level of cheating and
- 7:41he got and he got caught. They they tricked out by the way
- 7:44his gloves, which have to be all these have to be flame
- 7:47retardant. They all have.
- 7:49To be. They all have to be checked for
- 7:51all that. Well, think about it.
- 7:53If you have an open window, if you can, if you can hold a
- 7:56bigger glove, just you're looking for the just the micro
- 8:00amounts of advantage. So he tricks out his glove and
- 8:03as he's doing his qualifying lap, if you can hold it in a
- 8:06certain spot potentially where you're reducing the air flow
- 8:10just a little bit of an advantage.
- 8:11I like that. That's what I think is cool
- 8:14about the sport, which they've gotten rid of.
- 8:16So wait. But they're still trying.
- 8:18That goes to show you. They're still trying.
- 8:19They don't. So they don't normally have
- 8:22their hand out the window. You're saying he intentionally
- 8:25did it as a way to cut through the wind Better.
- 8:27It wasn't out the window. Again, you're talking about
- 8:30blocking a little bit of air just for qualifying, which your
- 8:35your qualifying position is very important.
- 8:37Yeah, if you start in the front, you can start out front and you
- 8:41can get away from all the crappy wrecks that happen in the middle
- 8:43of the pack when you're qualifying 25th and 30th.
- 8:47Damn, if I had a ton of money, I'd have a big ass garage
- 8:50attachment, you know, like Kenny does, and I'd have a mellow
- 8:54yellow replica shite kicker. You know what I mean?
- 8:58I guess it wouldn't be. I don't know if you could drive
- 9:01it on the street, but I'd be cool just to have one of those
- 9:03awesome old school NASCAR mellow yellow car, Charlie.
- 9:06That's what I want. So mellow yellow that was.
- 9:09Wasn't that junior head Mountain Dew?
- 9:11Now he has Sun Drop. Sun Drop is his big.
- 9:14I like the soda. One sponsor now, this happened
- 9:16in dirt racing the other day with something they're spraying
- 9:19on tires. I'm telling you, that's what I'm
- 9:21saying, is that the cheating, which they call ingenuity, is
- 9:25just embedded in this sport. They have dirt racers.
- 9:28There was a huge scandal last week because they're spraying
- 9:31something on the tires. They're essentially doping the
- 9:34tires. I think.
- 9:37It's kind of, it's super interesting.
- 9:38It's. Kind of cool.
- 9:39What's the big race this weekend?
- 9:40So wait, this weekend is Circuit of the Americas, so Coda Austin,
- 9:45TX road course. Oh, nice.
