- 0:05Hi, Mark, This is Daphne Ashbrook from Doctor Who the
- 0:09movie. Hello, Hello.
- 0:10Hello. Glad to see ya.
- 0:14Hope you're well. Hope everything's beautiful.
- 0:16This is a message from Joe, who loves you very much, and he
- 0:22wanted me to tell you that. And so I'm going to do that.
- 0:27And I'm going to say that I hear you are a big fan of the Doctor
- 0:32Who the film. I know I had a blast doing it.
- 0:36And so it makes me very happy that that that brought you joy.
- 0:40And I wish it had gotten picked up too.
- 0:42It would have been so much fun. Really would have had a great
- 0:47time doing that. But it was kind of, you know,
- 0:51perfect in a way. There's a nice bridge between
- 0:54the old and the new Doctor Who. And, and I was so thrilled to be
- 1:00a part of it. And I'm so honored to be asked
- 1:04to send you this message because, you know, love is
- 1:07everything. And we need more of that around
- 1:11this planet. And I'm thrilled and honored and
- 1:18sending you my love as well as Joe's.
- 1:21So there you go. And I hear that you are able to
- 1:27quote Grace like crazy. And I would love to hear that
- 1:32some way, somehow one day. So we're going to have to work
- 1:35on that because I would love to hear you do me anyway, I'm I'm
- 1:45crazy. I, I look, I tried to do all
- 1:48kinds of different things with this.
- 1:49I was thinking, how can I send this love message?
- 1:52So I was looking at poetry, found some of my favorite love
- 1:56poems, actually recorded one of them and also thought maybe I'd
- 2:01send you a love song. So I tried that, but I don't
- 2:05know if any of that was really happening.
- 2:07So, so this is it, ma'am. This is the message of love from
- 2:14me to you. You know, you finally meet the
- 2:17right guy and he's from a different planet there.
- 2:20I gave you one. Anyway, I'm loving you, Joe's
- 2:26loving you. Huge amounts of love coming your
- 2:28way. And I hope you have a beautiful
- 2:31holiday. We're getting close and sending
- 2:34you lots of love and happiness and hope you're well and
- 2:38healthy. And here's to 2022 being a
- 2:41better year. Thank you.
- 2:44Bye now. Welcome back to Hudster with a
- 3:31blood pen knife, the Doctor Who commentary podcast celebrating
- 3:37may get oh, no, I feel dirty saying it.
- 3:41So celebrating the 30th anniversary of Paul Mcgann's
- 3:45time with the Doctor. And we're going to be doing the
- 3:48TV movie today on the panel today.
- 3:52Last scene facing the day of the Doctor.
- 3:55I have Mr. Ian Martin. Hello, Ian.
- 3:58Have you finished playing with your pussy?
- 4:01No. As as she walks across the
- 4:05screen. You couldn't have time that
- 4:07better darling girl. Hello, I'm really good.
- 4:09How's everyone? Are we good?
- 4:11Spiffing excellent. We do end up pretending we
- 4:14haven't been podcasting for two hours thing.
- 4:17Yeah, absolutely. I was trying to keep it.
- 4:19Good. Good, good, good.
- 4:20And also there see it's not just me that talks pre introduction
- 4:24Mr. Dylan Reece. Hello, it's so wonderful to be
- 4:29here. And these shoes, they fit
- 4:31perfectly. There'll be a fair amount of
- 4:37quoting going on in this, right? I mean, how many times have you
- 4:39seen this movie? He's taken the sofa.
- 4:42Oh my God. I've seen this so many times.
- 4:48I watched it about three times the day it came out on video, so
- 4:51and probably once a day for about a year afterwards.
- 4:55Ian. Yeah, I've probably seen this
- 4:58somewhere between maybe 30 and 50 times in my life.
- 5:03I mean, yeah, I was. I was there on on the VHS
- 5:07release date. I was there on both VHS release
- 5:10dates because it was due out and then they delayed it by a
- 5:13fortnight. That pissed me off.
- 5:15To give it a trim. Yeah.
- 5:18Was the VHS out before it was even broadcast?
- 5:21I thought. I imagined.
- 5:22That. Yep, about about.
- 5:25I mean, not ultimately by too much, like maybe a week or two.
- 5:28Yeah, it was a couple of weeks, but it was supposed to be a
- 5:30month. But then the dumb blind massacre
- 5:32happened, so they cut out some of the shooting.
- 5:36OK also they cut out the zoom in on the stereo system as McCoy
- 5:42died for some reason. Yeah, it was going to be given a
- 5:4515 rating by the BBFC, so they had to, they had to cut.
- 5:49It I can actually, less so when it first came out, although I
- 5:54did love it when it came out. I'll have a small personal story
- 5:57to tell you folks and that is I can literally detail.
- 6:02The first time that Mark and I fucked was directly after we was
- 6:09in a hotel in Didcot and we did a read through of the entire TV
- 6:13movie script right from beginning to end.
- 6:16He brought 2 copies along and we were so caught up in the moment
- 6:19of the TV movie we just ended up in bed together.
- 6:23Was he the master and you were Changli?
- 6:28No, he was definitely, definitely Ashbrook.
- 6:30Jesus Christ. Yeah.
- 6:34So it does mean quite a lot to me, this story, you know, as a
- 6:36seduction technique, it works brilliantly.
- 6:38But you do have to be a Doctor Who fan, all right?
- 6:40Don't just try it on anyone. Don't try it on poo.
- 6:42Yeah. All right, Ian, it won't work.
- 6:43It does it. I've I tried it in the 90s.
- 6:46I was turning it on anyone. No, we don't.
- 6:48We don't want to watch this. We don't.
- 6:50Start randomly going up to people saying the Asian child.
- 6:55Yeah, that that gets you in trouble as well.
- 6:58I I had more luck with people saying, all right, I'll sleep
- 7:02with you if you don't make me watch it.
- 7:04That just goes to show how wrong people were in the 90s.
- 7:08Going to kick us into the story any second, but I just want to
- 7:12ask you one question 1st and that is obviously when this came
- 7:17out it was divisive, right? There's that maybe bullshit.
- 7:21Maybe the true story of terrorist Dicks and Barry.
- 7:24Let's leaving the screening appalled saying it's not Doctor
- 7:27Who. I remember Matt Jones's fluid
- 7:31links the next month after it came out where he was saying no,
- 7:34that wasn't Doctor Who at all. Other people were just clinging
- 7:37onto any scrap saying please do some more because we want more
- 7:40Doctor Who. But do you think over time that
- 7:46a lot of its detractors have sort of fallen away?
- 7:50Because I only really see love for this now.
- 7:52What do you think, Dylan? Yeah, I think absolutely.
- 7:55I think again, everyone pinned their hopes on to this being a
- 8:00bold new dawn, which it wasn't and I don't think it was ever
- 8:03going to be, but maybe we'll come to that in a little bit.
- 8:07I think it's, you know, it's some of the best looking, best
- 8:11produced Doctor Who we've ever had to this day.
- 8:14And at the time it was so exciting.
- 8:17And also it's about what it's spawned now as well.
- 8:20And because the show came back and became a massive success,
- 8:23it's no longer a last gasp. It's, it's just, it's a midpoint
- 8:28between old Doctor Who and new Doctor Who.
- 8:31And it's this weird little blip in the middle where for one
- 8:34night only, it was this brilliant mad American adventure
- 8:38show. And yeah, Doctor Who fans are
- 8:41always going to complain. And it was the main complaint
- 8:43was the kissing. There'd be more of that and the
- 8:47ending, but. There'd be more of that as well.
- 8:51Yeah, exactly. Most, most new series stories
- 8:54like that seem to end like that and actually like the memory
- 8:58cheats in terms of classic Doctor Who, in terms of the way
- 9:01a lot of those stories were resolved.
- 9:03It's not like some incredibly complex affair.
- 9:06It's usually an explosion. It's just this time it's some
- 9:09wires being moved around and a bit of an explosion.
- 9:12So the memory definitely cheats. But yeah, there were a bunch of
- 9:15very vocal detractors. Also, I think that the Barry
- 9:19let's Dick stories been overemphasized over time because
- 9:23I saw them at a convention the year that it came out and they
- 9:25were like, we thought it looked brilliant.
- 9:27We thought he was brilliant. We loved the TARDIS, didn't get
- 9:30all the stuff with under the console at the time.
- 9:32So I think that's probably what what was said essentially.
- 9:35We've all read The Eight Doctors.
- 9:37You know that first page? It was some mad dream in San
- 9:41Francisco. Let's make the TARDIS white
- 9:42again, Right? Let's go on adventures.
- 9:45Ian, what do you think? What was the question?
- 9:49Do you think the reputation of the TV movie has softened over
- 9:53time? I think it's more that it's,
- 9:55it's not really in the conversation anymore.
- 9:58So people who don't like it, you, you don't get to hear from
- 10:01them about it, maybe. There's far more things for them
- 10:06to hide other. Than this exactly.
- 10:07They're, you know, if, if they're offside because of
- 10:10kissing and timey whiminess, then they can, you know, be the
- 10:14people who hate the Steven Moffett.
- 10:15Here that really struggled. I love this though, what went
- 10:21wrong? Nothing.
- 10:23Nothing. It's nothing.
- 10:26Yeah. Well, it's the ultimate
- 10:28celebration we can do is to watch this thing.
- 10:31Should we go ahead and watch this thing?
- 10:33Please can we? But wait, hold the phone.
- 10:36I've got one more question for Dylan before we go in.
- 10:38Dylan Now initially this was a three-way podcast experience,
- 10:43wasn't it? And we was going to read a book
- 10:47for Ian's fabulous podcast. We were all stories in the end,
- 10:50a little plugged area. We don't want to forget about
- 10:52doing this. All right.
- 10:54And you did read that book, didn't you?
- 10:56Yes, I read The Crooked World. I feel like I'll get ahead of
- 10:59things and get that read and out of the way and I finished it.
- 11:03I was like Mum, mum, I've done my homework and mum says
- 11:07school's cancelled. Oh boy.
- 11:09Well, I just did you enjoy it? I did, actually.
- 11:13I thought it was a lot of fun. I don't think it was perfect,
- 11:16but throwing Doctor Who into this weird cartoon world for a
- 11:20book is exactly this sort of thing.
- 11:22I like my spin off media to do to just do some madcap idea, You
- 11:26know, I think it could have done with a stronger villain, but
- 11:30certainly getting all the very nearly popular culture
- 11:33references within their of Tom and Jerry and scooby-doo and
- 11:36things like that. What?
- 11:38What a brilliant book. Someone should really do a
- 11:40podcast on it one day talking about how fantastic it is.
- 11:43Fitzcryner having it off with a Barbie, finding out she's got no
- 11:46parts. Yeah, exactly.
- 11:48Look, we've all been there. Oh no, wait, we haven't.
- 11:51God. Well, thank you for doing the
- 11:53homework anyway. And Ian, should you wish to just
- 11:55take out that one minute and put.
- 11:58Out a very. Small episode alongside.
- 12:00This the thing. The thing is, the crooked world
- 12:02starts with T, and I'm only as far as L at the.
- 12:06Moment so just twatting. Yeah, I don't, I don't think
- 12:11there's a Doctor Who book called Doctor Who Twat, but that.
- 12:15Was twat man. It was the one that Tom Baker
- 12:17and Ian Martyr. Yeah, that's right.
- 12:18Yes, with Sophonis Bumo it. Well, should we go and wash this
- 12:26thing? That's bloody.
- 12:28A long time ago, on the planet of I forgot.
- 12:31Now this starts now. Well, someone counts in Ian
- 12:33counts. In.
- 12:34In three 20. My God.
- 12:38One play. I mean.
- 12:41Do you remember seeing? Remember seeing those effects
- 12:44for the first. Time God.
- 12:45Doesn't Scaro look exactly like Gallifrey it?
- 12:49Does it does Now who is this master?
- 12:52It's Gordon Tipple, so I thought this opening sequence was all
- 12:57CGI. But Gordon Tipple is a real
- 13:00person. They built the set of the thing
- 13:02that he's in. Where?
- 13:04And they painted his face brown for.
- 13:06Something they put They put a hat on him that made him look
- 13:09like his own eye with all. Winter parties like this let's
- 13:13like. A very aerodynamic cycling
- 13:16helmet from the future. Now it has been said that
- 13:20perhaps the film would have been better.
- 13:22Without this stuff. And I don't know whether that's
- 13:25true. I mean, it's the, the, the, the
- 13:28sort of main thing people say is it's that moment where you see
- 13:30the fish head chopped off. That's where it's just started.
- 13:32I think that's true. But I think you could have taken
- 13:35this and chucked it at the end and made the question, because I
- 13:40mean, Doctor, Who am I? Essentially the doctor's lost
- 13:43his memory was the pitch for the film.
- 13:45And I just think but. I think then yes.
- 13:47Now, no. I wouldn't be without the shitty
- 13:51Daleks at the start there. Yeah, I would certainly wouldn't
- 13:53be without Sylvester Mccoy's 15 Minutes.
- 13:55It's the best actor he ever did in Doctor Room.
- 13:58No nostalgia wise yeah I I completely agree but.
- 14:01What do we think of what do we think of these opening credits?
- 14:04Just quickly gorgeous. Oh they are lovely.
- 14:06Duh, duh, duh duh duh duh. These never.
- 14:08Sounded better. Is it?
- 14:10Is it real? Is it a band?
- 14:12Is it a? Orchestra.
- 14:13It's an orchestra, yeah. This Tardis?
- 14:17Is not. CGI.
- 14:18It's a model shot incorporated in the CGI.
- 14:21On a string. It's on.
- 14:23It's on pivot. On a pivot.
- 14:26Pivot so originally it opened this monologue was a a last
- 14:32minute thing. You know, it was on the planet
- 14:33Scaro that my old enemy, the. Masters.
- 14:36It was originally Gordon Tipple doing the monologue being
- 14:40executed so and that is out there on the Internet if you
- 14:42want to hear it. This is either directly post
- 14:45Lung Barrow or directly post the last day, depending on which
- 14:50continuity you follow. All that comic strip that Ace
- 14:54dies in with the giant spider. Can we just have a moment?
- 14:57I've just saw his name there for John Debney's.
- 14:59Scar. Oh yeah.
- 15:00It's one of the best scores ever, I think.
- 15:03Yeah, it's so memorable in a way that perhaps a lot of these
- 15:07things often are not. We have a little sing with me
- 15:09later. If you know the music, you know
- 15:10the chase. Will have to.
- 15:11Yeah, then yeah. There's a really out there if
- 15:15you can get it. Or do you know what?
- 15:17Drop me a line. There's a thing called the work
- 15:20print, which is unfinished effects and attempt score.
- 15:23And genuinely, the attempt score is just pulled from different
- 15:27other TV programs and films and it changes the tone in these
- 15:32early parts of it so much. Towards the end they're using
- 15:36Indiana Jones music and actually the chase is sort of it's about
- 15:38the same vibe, but the earlier stuff with the here and in the
- 15:42TARDIS, it actually is slightly darker and scarier because
- 15:45they're using like plinky, Plunky X-Files music and stuff
- 15:48like that. How beautiful, gentlemen, is
- 15:51this TARDIS? It's beautiful, but not at all
- 15:54practical. Thank God, I thought you were
- 15:56going to say, how beautiful does Sylvester McCoy look there?
- 15:59I mean, it's a great look for Sylvester McCoy, isn't it?
- 16:02It's. Mad hair he's got going on.
- 16:04There, I mean, he weren't coming back in that jumper, was he?
- 16:07That's no. And do you know what you don't
- 16:09notice in here because of the grading is the colour of his
- 16:12trousers. When you see his trousers on
- 16:14like action figures and in pictures, they're so blue.
- 16:17But you just don't quite get I. Tend not to look at Sylvester
- 16:19Mccoy's trousers very often. Oh.
- 16:22It's I look at nothing else. It was a beautiful song.
- 16:28Sorry, yeah. Again, this wasn't the song that
- 16:31there was a different song that they used but they couldn't get
- 16:34the rights for. It was here where the cup jumped
- 16:37in the air and then it cuts to the scratch and then slow motion
- 16:41of it. I was like, oh, this is going to
- 16:42be directed to the hill. And it is.
- 16:45It's an odd choice. Jeffrey Sachs, he's somebody
- 16:48that you wouldn't. I mean, you know, we'll get to
- 16:51Jeffrey Saxon, this fucking the silver thing in the TARDIS and
- 16:54an explode. This was the most exciting thing
- 16:57I'd ever seen as a sort of 13 year old or whatever.
- 17:00And look at McCoy, he looks so comfortable now around the
- 17:03TARDIS. That console does look a little
- 17:06bit crap though, doesn't it? Fuck you, Ian.
- 17:09It's no, it's, it's I love. I love the word.
- 17:11I just think there's not maybe enough controls I.
- 17:15Like the the constant of the scanner that he pulls down on
- 17:18the. Yeah.
- 17:19That's great, Yeah. And what about the huge, What's
- 17:23it called? The scanner in the ceiling,
- 17:24Yeah. Planetarium, it's amazing, but I
- 17:27just think the the console's just got about like 9 knobs on
- 17:30one of the panels and you just think, where's the reticular
- 17:33vector gorge? Where's the Where's the temple?
- 17:36Oh, it's like, God's sake, there's come all over the tart.
- 17:39That does that does look jizzy. I've not been Outback produced
- 17:45that much for years. Good God.
- 17:48Oh there's the fish. Sorry fella.
- 17:52The most famous fish in Doctor Who fandom.
- 17:54Slop daddy he does. Conventions, you know.
- 17:57I mean, who the fuck? Would think to do this as a
- 18:00transition in this kitchen which means nothing to the story at
- 18:04all. It's so great.
- 18:06What is the semiotic significance of chopping off the
- 18:08fish's head? Is it to say old Doctor Who is
- 18:11dead? This is new?
- 18:14Or is it just to say I hate fish?
- 18:17The anti fish agenda was real in the 90s.
- 18:20Look at this gang warfare on the streets of San Francisco. 3
- 18:25Three children can you? Hear the music here.
- 18:28Can't you Done, Done, Done, done, done, done?
- 18:33Oh, oh, he's going to now he's got a good speed.
- 18:36Is he going to jump? He's he's over the fence.
- 18:39Look at. That it's also exciting.
- 18:40But you could be in an episode of X-Files at this point,
- 18:43couldn't you? There's certain points, you
- 18:45know. Do you remember Leonard Betts
- 18:46again? Yes, I do.
- 18:48There's certain points with around the ambulance that are
- 18:51shot. Yeah.
- 18:52Just like Leonard Betts. It's that time though, isn't it?
- 18:56It's it's, it's 96 I believe. 96 Oh my God, I don't even know
- 19:00what year it is, no. We're watching the iPlayer
- 19:03version. How much shooting do we get in
- 19:05this version? I.
- 19:06Wonder. Oh yeah.
- 19:08Because there's a lot more shooting in the the version that
- 19:13went out. Yeah, exciting.
- 19:15Do the 2 little mates they both fur die?
- 19:18Ohh yeah, we've yeah. It's so there's a scene gone.
- 19:21They were both shot and they fall to the floor and then
- 19:24they're about to shoot Chang Lee and the TARDIS materialising.
- 19:27Oh, no, yeah, yeah, yeah. We're watching the cut version.
- 19:30Oh, it's like a little mate. I'm as bad as Talis of Wenchai.
- 19:33It's like that, that cutscene from RoboCop where you see Ed
- 19:36209 really blasting the hell out of out of that guy on the desk.
- 19:41It's like. I love just. 10 minutes of
- 19:43writhing and. I love the fact that McCoy has
- 19:46been making grand schemes around the universe for so long and he
- 19:49just walked out of the TARDIS and got shot dead.
- 19:52What? What do we What?
- 19:53Yeah. What do we think of this as an
- 19:54end? For a doctor, it's different.
- 19:57It's quite visceral, isn't it? Like you feel the bullets.
- 20:00Yeah, I mean, in the new series the Doctor just always gets
- 20:03blasted by a laser of some sort, doesn't it?
- 20:06Yeah, it's it's sort of it's lost some of the sophistication
- 20:11it used to have. I mean, this is perhaps the most
- 20:13unsophisticated have. You ever ejaculated into a
- 20:17keyhole like that? Not like that, no.
- 20:20I did once through the letterbox of an estate agent, but never
- 20:25into a keyhole. It's quite a tight, narrow
- 20:28target. See, these special effects are a
- 20:30bit sort of Terminator 2 E, aren't they?
- 20:32They're. Sort of very much so, very much
- 20:34so. And, and I was just going to
- 20:37say, when the the previous story that was aired was survival, you
- 20:41feel like there's been this phenomenal quantum leap in, in
- 20:45Doctor Who's fortunes to look this good suddenly.
- 20:49I was going to say there's a bit of Terminator in Eric Roberts's
- 20:52look a bit. Late.
- 20:54There's a bit of Terminator in all of us, Do they?
- 20:56Which? Bit.
- 20:59I don't know. This is Eric Roberts before we
- 21:01had his jaw wired sharp, isn't it?
- 21:03So we could say I actually say dialogue at this point.
- 21:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:06OK. Actually, I think he's great in
- 21:08this. He gets the tone of this person.
- 21:10I won't be having an anti Eric. Camp as Christmas.
- 21:14Fantastic. Oh my God.
- 21:16We're in ER. Now apparently Roberts did do in
- 21:20his first few takes a slightly more tone down performance and
- 21:24they were like no, amp it up. We want more, we want more from
- 21:27you, and I think it's the right choice.
- 21:29It's like it's like Anthony Ainley all over again.
- 21:32Oh God, we're about to be introduced to my favorite side
- 21:35character. You know, the woman who's always
- 21:36trying to give Grace the phone. It's Brian, that one.
- 21:43It's your dull preppy beard. Isn't she the one sister?
- 21:47The master? Oh, grey body snatching, it's
- 21:50that one. Do you think there's too many
- 21:53shots in the ambulance of the sort of snake slivering about?
- 21:57It seems to be stuck there for a good 10 minutes.
- 22:00Maybe he's thinking about stealing the ambulance and then
- 22:03do. You think there's too many shots
- 22:04of naked Sylvester McCoy? You could never have too many
- 22:08shots of naked Sylvester McCoy. Simon Brewer, if you're
- 22:12listening and you're still planning that film about
- 22:14Sylvester McCoy, take that note, OK?
- 22:16We don't want to see naked Sylvester.
- 22:19Or if you could do 2 cuts, one for Ian and one for me, where
- 22:23Sylve does the same interviews but just naked.
- 22:26Oh, she gets the line 2 hearts. Oh, she's the best, That woman.
- 22:30I think her name's Curtis. Hello, who's this smug looking
- 22:37doctor? He's a very interesting choice
- 22:39of actor to play a doctor in the US.
- 22:42He's not Indian. You know we need on the case,
- 22:46don't you, Amazing Grace. Amazing.
- 22:51Like I think we'll all get her hard on when she's going down
- 22:53that corridor. In the I'm already there mate,
- 22:57I'm. Already.
- 22:58There, it's not the best companion introduction ever.
- 23:02Yeah, I think it is. It's so iconic.
- 23:05How old was she when she did this?
- 23:07Oh. No.
- 23:09Because. She is old, 20s early 30s.
- 23:11I'd have had her about 30, yeah. Yeah, because for a Doctor Who
- 23:16companion, she is a bit like she's, most of them are sort of
- 23:2019 or whatever. So it, it, it felt to me at the
- 23:23time like they'd cast a woman rather than a girl.
- 23:26And I know that's sort of it. It feels more almost in the
- 23:30Catherine Tate mould, even though like 30 is impossible.
- 23:32Well, it's coming. It's coming while the new
- 23:35adventures are still being published.
- 23:36So it's like they've seen that Benny Sommerfield is a very
- 23:39successful companion and they, in my mind, they've cast someone
- 23:43of similar age. She's method, right?
- 23:45That single tear that she had when she pulled away the Opera
- 23:48glasses. Oh, look at that is.
- 23:51She. Barefoot.
- 23:52She. Is.
- 23:54Start running heels mate, I. Mean.
- 23:56What a fucker Brian is, man. She's gone off to save a life
- 23:59and he's like, oh, you're leaving the opera.
- 24:01Where I'd like a big finished story about what happened to
- 24:05Brian after this. He died.
- 24:08I was, I was thinking the other day, like if this had gone to a
- 24:13sort of seven series thing, then eventually they would have come
- 24:18back and done an episode. Maybe at the end of the final
- 24:20series of the Paul McGann years. Brian would have somehow been
- 24:24like the big bad because he was there at the start.
- 24:27Maybe he'd be coming back. Maybe a life without grace.
- 24:31Yeah. Driven him sort of into in cell
- 24:34territory. You know, everyone sort of rates
- 24:36the Smith and Jones, the start of that, where we learn so much
- 24:39about Martha. Everything was in there about
- 24:41Grace in that scene there. She's being dressed up, She's
- 24:44important. She's a highly skilled
- 24:46professional. She's got a shithead of a
- 24:48boyfriend at home who's given her hard time.
- 24:52Really quick, quick stuff. What?
- 24:55What do we think a series would have looked like?
- 24:57Oh, sexy. Like, it's interesting that
- 25:02every take that they have before this, when they're developing
- 25:06scripts is a reboot, and then at the last minute they decide to
- 25:09go for this version. But also, I don't think that
- 25:13we're ever really in danger of getting a series from this.
- 25:16I think from the Amblin version we were.
- 25:18But this just feels almost like a last desperate gasp from
- 25:22Seagull, who's been trying to get something made.
- 25:24He sees an opportunity, he takes it.
- 25:26I think the most we would have got is a couple more TV movies
- 25:28had the ratings been sky high. But as it was like, you know, I
- 25:33just don't think there was anything there perhaps.
- 25:35Unfortunately, or a Don machine is that even though that never
- 25:38came to be the amount of 8th Doctor material, whether that's
- 25:43books or audios or comics, I mean, he really found a
- 25:48following. People love the 8th Doctor,
- 25:50don't they? Is that because of this, or is
- 25:52that because of the wilderness years?
- 25:54I think it's a mix of the two, and I also think it helps that
- 25:58he was the lead doctor for a long time, so he's the lead in
- 26:02the books. He felt like the like the new
- 26:06and exciting doctrine, Big Finish.
- 26:07We were filling in gaps even from the start with Colin, Peter
- 26:11and Sylv, but he had the ongoing story arcs and the ongoing story
- 26:15and new companion. So I think he just felt like
- 26:18there was an infinite possibility of stories and we
- 26:20got them and then we got them again, and then we got them
- 26:23again and then we got them again.
- 26:25Ian, just because you know your money's being well spent, we're
- 26:29blasted with lasers. Oh, how exciting.
- 26:35I'm totally on board for that. I mean, we've never seen surgery
- 26:38like this, have we in Doctor Who?
- 26:40No, this, this is all completely new.
- 26:42Like it's a big mission statement to go, this is
- 26:45something completely different. This ain't your daddy's Doctor
- 26:48Who. It's like what What's popular at
- 26:51this point in the zeitgeist in the 90s, ER, Terminator X-Files.
- 26:56So let's put all of that on screen.
- 26:59Yeah, I mean, she basically is Scully, right?
- 27:02Even just the. Look, yeah.
- 27:04And. And that that can only ever be a
- 27:08good thing. But there's something very
- 27:10effervescent about Daphne Ashbrook.
- 27:13I don't know what it is. There's there's a, there's an
- 27:16energy about her and I just find infectious.
- 27:18It kind of transcends the script, doesn't it?
- 27:21You? You just know that that she can
- 27:23do the comedy episodes, she could do whatever you threw at
- 27:27her, and she manages to get that across in some fairly
- 27:30run-of-the-mill dialogue that she's actually given.
- 27:33Where precisely did she shove that probe?
- 27:36Well, you know how it is, someone sticks something in you,
- 27:39pushes it the wrong way, and you need to do a little twitch.
- 27:42Oh. I'd love to go that way,
- 27:44wouldn't you? I feel like she sort of put it
- 27:48into one heart and it worked its way through his other heart and
- 27:51out of the other side of his chest.
- 27:53But. I feel like JNT is still in
- 27:56charge here. Did you see that pad up her
- 27:57dress on? Her boobs were just sticking
- 27:59out. From that dress.
- 28:02Yeah, we're still, we're still in that era of TV army.
- 28:08No, I'm, I'm, I'm pretending to be above all that sort of thing.
- 28:11But really, I'm only here for the cleavage.
- 28:14What do we? What do we know about Harry von
- 28:18Gorkum? Is that a name that rings any
- 28:20bells to you? No.
- 28:22Harry von Gorkum was originally cast as the 8th Doctor.
- 28:26He flew through the auditions and was told there and then that
- 28:30he'd got the role. And they started negotiating
- 28:32with his agent. And then the BBC said no, he's
- 28:35not a big enough star. We don't, we don't want him.
- 28:38So for a brief time, this a man called Harry von Gorkum was
- 28:42going to be. The English.
- 28:45Not Paul McGann. He's an Englishman living in the
- 28:48States I believe. So look up and see what he's
- 28:53been in what? Has he been in?
- 28:55He's been in a bunch of American TV shows as a supporting actor,
- 28:58but nothing like. Any of the Star Treks I.
- 29:01Don't know whether he's been in Star Trek.
- 29:02He's been in 24 Oh. OK.
- 29:06Charmed, Will and Grace. Nash, Nash.
- 29:09Bridges. Seinfeld.
- 29:11He's a Batman. Yeah, NCIS but Batman and Robin,
- 29:17but like a path not trodden. We interrupt this podcast to
- 29:21bring you a message. If you're Nicholas Briggs and
- 29:24you're stuck for an idea for a box set, the Harry von Gorkin
- 29:27Dr. box sets one through 36 are out there waiting to be
- 29:32recorded. God grace wear that dress for
- 29:35out the entire story. She's just.
- 29:37Awful. Either of them.
- 29:39We just missed the Star Trek clock.
- 29:41It's the first time Star Trek has been mentioned in the Doctor
- 29:44Who universe on TV. Oh, now listen, I'm, I'm told
- 29:48Arsenal like this, but he's got a snake inside him, hasn't he?
- 29:53Oh, no, it's not in here, is it? Yeah.
- 29:55Usually. Yeah, it's he's right now.
- 29:58His snake is still in his trousers.
- 30:01Oh, it's sort of slivering around the room at the moment.
- 30:04Yeah, yeah. All these shots like the such
- 30:08smooth camera work he's using loads of cranes and chimps and
- 30:11stuff like that. Again, this isn't your BBC's
- 30:14Doctor Who, but Jeffrey Sachs was not an obvious choice.
- 30:17He started life working in current affairs before going to
- 30:23outside broadcast on the news 2 years before this.
- 30:26He was directing Birds of a Feather so to and and he said he
- 30:30was as shocked as anybody to come and do this and he was just
- 30:35like he did. He was doing more and more
- 30:37drama, but nothing to this scale and nothing of this budget.
- 30:39I mean, I first sort of knew him from The New Statesman, so I
- 30:43guess he'd been to, he'd been in in comedy for a while.
- 30:47I'm wondering if there is some prestige in British directors
- 30:51because the first Deep Space 9 episode was directed by an
- 30:55Englishman as well. They who they took over to
- 30:57America and that had a budget of 18,000,000.
- 31:01Like how? Yeah, they do put a lot of money
- 31:03into. British television was still
- 31:05sort of seen as the best in the world then, you know, then the
- 31:09the BBC, like American TV was seen as large quantities
- 31:13disposable, whereas Britain was making sort of your edge of
- 31:17darknesses and things like that. You get an 8 part series shot on
- 31:20film with some old Shakespearean actors in and things like that.
- 31:24And so I think it was, it was sort of a bit revered in the 90s
- 31:27in that respect. Do we like the Mortuary guy?
- 31:30You know his fucking brilliant, terrible joke.
- 31:33Party on. December 31st, 1999.
- 31:40He's an abrasive presence, isn't he?
- 31:42Now, what do we think of shots of Sylvester Mccoy's toes?
- 31:45Though I could have done without that.
- 31:47Yeah, what do we think of the the fundamental idea that the
- 31:50Ainley Master swallowed something that's turned him into
- 31:53a sort of jizz snake? I think Anthony Ailey swallowed
- 31:58a lot of strange things in this term.
- 32:01Eric, Eric Roberts just did on the screen.
- 32:04I've never had one that big, but oh God he was gagging.
- 32:10He was. He was almost dislocating his
- 32:12bottom jaw. That's when you know you've got
- 32:14grips with something quite special.
- 32:16This is a version of the master that's ripe for hamster, isn't
- 32:19it? And that's, of course, Eric
- 32:22Roberts, real wife. Yeah.
- 32:25Now, if you ever get a chance to watch the Eric Roberts Myth
- 32:28Makers, I highly recommend it because he's being interviewed
- 32:32by his wife who's doing a lot of the heavy lifting with the
- 32:34answers. Oh, really?
- 32:37This whole sequence with the intercuts to Frankenstein are
- 32:41chef's kiss. And I remember seeing this in my
- 32:45mouth just like, Oh my God, this is how they do regeneration now.
- 32:49Do we like that? Regeneration used to change all
- 32:51the time and now it's the same. I wish it kept changing,
- 32:55although then it changed to by Generation and I hated it.
- 33:00Now I do like how Sylvester McCoy is well in for the gurn in
- 33:04and Paul McGann is highly embarrassed by it.
- 33:06Look how it look. Look at McCoy.
- 33:11Oh, they're playing to Mccoy's strengths here.
- 33:13Wait, look at McGann. Now he's just sort of like, oh.
- 33:17Yeah, McGann just looked like looks like he's eating a lemon.
- 33:20Yeah. Like he's trying to let out a
- 33:21fart, you know, like very subtle.
- 33:25Paul McGann would never do that. No, he's perfect.
- 33:28They would. They would smell like honey.
- 33:30There's not many Doctor Who stories you can say the
- 33:32direction is artistic, though, is that?
- 33:35But this really is stuff like Heaven's saying, you know, there
- 33:38are a few moments where you can. Do you know what always ignores
- 33:42me? It annoys me ever since the time
- 33:45when he opens his mouth and the air comes out, it's just not
- 33:48quite synced up. So it's just a little bit above
- 33:51his mouth, a lot of it. And I noticed it at the time and
- 33:54I've it's been with me forever. What a loser.
- 33:59Yeah, you've ruined a. Curious assistant that watches
- 34:01horror movies eating popcorn while he's sitting there with
- 34:04the bodies. Yeah, he's in my car presence.
- 34:08Everyone sort of turns up at the end.
- 34:10Did you notice they're all at the party at the end, all of
- 34:12these side? Characters, Yeah, on on $40,000
- 34:18a year. But sure, they're all invited to
- 34:19this incredibly prestigious party.
- 34:22This thing about the superhuman strength, I remember people go
- 34:25mad about this. The Doctor can't, you know, bash
- 34:27down doors with his hands. Yeah, I was.
- 34:30I hand waved that as being like sort of post regeneration.
- 34:34All his cells are on fire. He's got 10 minutes of super
- 34:37strength. I didn't realise Craig Hinton
- 34:39was on this coal Wien. Yeah, but only a decade later
- 34:44they'd see the Doctor grow a new hand 24 hours after
- 34:47regenerating. Yeah, so.
- 34:49Oh, and the Marigold music now so far.
- 34:55Love that guy. Yeah.
- 34:56Does he ever done a convention? Get him down to Chiswick
- 34:59Phantom. You know the fellow who went on
- 35:01to flight for entirety? What's his name?
- 35:03Brian. You know who's in it later?
- 35:05The Doctor Toll's future. Who plays Gareth?
- 35:08Yeah. Oh, Gareth, that's it.
- 35:09Sorry, not Brian. Yeah.
- 35:11Oh, look at that shot there. I mean, that could have been
- 35:13Rachel Tolele tilt in his love camera there.
- 35:17You understand the correct or the corridor wrapped in a sheet.
- 35:20I always love it when you can see rain pattering in the
- 35:25reflection like that, just like in Blink.
- 35:28I thought you were going to say I always love it when you can
- 35:30sort of see through the shroud and look at his little peachy
- 35:33bottom. That doesn't hurt either.
- 35:37Lots of clocks on display. This this whole Christ analogy.
- 35:41Are we are we buying into this? Do we?
- 35:43I thought, hey, Davis did. Yeah.
- 35:46I don't think it's that Christy really.
- 35:48He's. In a fucking shroud.
- 35:51Who did Jesus, not Christ? No, specifically after Sylvester
- 36:00McCoy regenerated into Jesus in Galilee, he went on, he went to
- 36:06a temple and he couldn't remember who he was.
- 36:08So he just, he just kicked the shit out of the money lenders.
- 36:12There is a line right about this wing of the hospital that is,
- 36:16you know, the storm sort of caved it in and all of that.
- 36:19But it's sort of just in passing.
- 36:21I was watching this the first time going well.
- 36:23Where is he with all these dollies and smash mirrors?
- 36:25Yeah, what sort of hospital has got dollies, smash mirrors and
- 36:30old TV's in a scary old room? I mean, that shot of his, his
- 36:35face in all of those smashed bits of mirror, that's
- 36:37beautiful. This for me, this may be the one
- 36:40misstep of the whole thing. That thing where he's bellowing,
- 36:43who am I? It's.
- 36:45Because he doesn't go, who am I? He goes, who am I?
- 36:48Yeah, that's true. Well.
- 36:49Because he's a bit embarrassed, isn't it?
- 36:51He can't quite commit. Oh, look at all that come round
- 36:54Eric Roberts's face. It's dribbling out of his mouth,
- 36:58isn't it? I was going to suggest my daddy
- 37:04should listen to this. I don't think I will mention it.
- 37:07To him. So shot of the bridge in San
- 37:09Francisco there to tell us we're in San Francisco a very hilly up
- 37:13and down kind of place as opposed to the rather flat
- 37:16topography that we we get to see in this story.
- 37:19So never mind. Just to prove we're not in TV
- 37:23anymore, I think we get 2 minutes now or so without any
- 37:26dialogue whatsoever. It's all told through pictures.
- 37:28We go through three different characters and where they are at
- 37:31this point. Tom Baker's scarf in a hospital
- 37:33for some reason. The music here is fabulous,
- 37:36isn't it? Very 90s though.
- 37:40And it's the first time as well. Russell stole it so many times.
- 37:43It's the first time we did that sort of overhead shot for TARDIS
- 37:46and someone going around it as well in a minute.
- 37:50What? About.
- 37:50Yuji so because I hear that Yuji so was contracted but Daphne
- 37:57Ashbrook wasn't for further stories.
- 38:00Yeah, that's interesting. I don't know how true that is.
- 38:03It's the, it's the sort of thing where I reckon that there was
- 38:07probably an option, but I don't know.
- 38:11It's, it's bizarre that she wasn't, if she wasn't.
- 38:13But then, but then there was also at one point Philip Siegel
- 38:16was saying in an interview that he was like, oh, we might
- 38:19consider having a different companion every week, which is
- 38:21bizarre. There's a lot that's a lot of
- 38:24money spending on the companions.
- 38:28Still doing the old style costumes, aren't we?
- 38:31Like, you know, when Russell brought it back and it was like
- 38:33leather jackets and things like that.
- 38:35You know why Russell did that? He said he after this aired, he
- 38:39went he saw like the head of ITV or something, who knew he was a
- 38:42Doctor Who fan. And the guy goes, oh, what did
- 38:44you think? And Russell was like, oh, yeah,
- 38:46I really liked it. And the gut.
- 38:47The head of ITV said it would have worked if they were if they
- 38:49weren't in fancy dress. And he was just like noted.
- 38:54I mean, it's not a bad point, but he's on so many of those
- 38:56covers now. I've sort of got used to it.
- 38:58Yeah, Roberts has been working out.
- 39:01He's been to the gym, hasn't he? Incredible God he's got going on
- 39:06there. He needs the duck doctor's body.
- 39:13BMR used to quote this to each other all the time over bloody
- 39:16zooms. Come back to bed.
- 39:19Master. So.
- 39:21Terrible. So he's killed his own wife.
- 39:25Yeah. A lot, a lot of men have that
- 39:29fantasy. Eric Roberts has managed to live
- 39:32it out. We better warn her you're about
- 39:34to get married. I'm not going to kill my wife.
- 39:39She would kill me. So Alfay, soon I will have all
- 39:44your lives. He says mourn Dr. Doesn't he so
- 39:48mourn Dr. Soon? It's like mourn as in like mourn
- 39:51for it. Or is the mourning?
- 39:54I don't think the second coming happens.
- 39:56It's it's great. You think he's going to go to a
- 39:58better hospital? Oh dear.
- 40:01Hey stop by psychiatrist. Where you could.
- 40:03Pick up some more mind altering drugs.
- 40:06It's. Funny though, isn't it?
- 40:07It's a funny like. Is it?
- 40:09No. The later on when they're back
- 40:11and forth in the dialogue is fab.
- 40:16Yeah, there you go. Look, can't you see Scully going
- 40:19off to do her latest on top? Absolutely, Absolutely.
- 40:22And there's Wild Bill Hickok with no shoes, so.
- 40:27What was his hair actually like? He was.
- 40:30Short he was, he had like #4 I think and, and the, the wig,
- 40:37there's more than one wig, right?
- 40:38Because you've got like a straight haired wig in a few
- 40:41shots time. You've got this curly thing
- 40:42going on. Sometimes it's, it's just some
- 40:45kind of like a horse. I don't know.
- 40:48It's there should be a box set about the wig to be honest.
- 40:52Oh my God, these close-ups of people.
- 40:55It's designed to make you feel disorientated and slightly
- 40:58nauseous. Or may I say they were very
- 41:01successful. Yes, the colour of that hospital
- 41:04wall. I wonder if this is about time
- 41:06travel. He's just going time, time,
- 41:08time. Time.
- 41:10I know something about time. Time.
- 41:12Many, many clocks. Yeah.
- 41:14Nah. Who's this man?
- 41:17He's only in one scene, isn't he?
- 41:19No. Isn't he not in?
- 41:19He doesn't he watch from a bus. Yeah.
- 41:22Surgery. He's a laser man.
- 41:23He's some kind of director. I think he's one of the money
- 41:26men the Penny Pinchers encounters.
- 41:28She must be on 6 figures. There's no way she's walking out
- 41:31of this hospital, right? Well she's probably walking out
- 41:35with a pretty good pay off. They don't.
- 41:38They don't mention it but I imagine she's getting probably
- 41:41100 large upfront. She's probably had a lot of
- 41:43offers from other hospitals. As well.
- 41:45Yeah, Oh yeah, it. Must stink in that room now that
- 41:48he's burnt that plastic X-ray. Indeed.
- 41:51Yeah, and those 12 film canisters of some old 60s BBC
- 41:55show he had in a desk burnt them as well.
- 41:58I mean. Are them?
- 42:00Can you think of many other first stories for a companion
- 42:05where they are as well formed as this?
- 42:08I'm ready for the adventure. I can think of a handful, but
- 42:11not many. I think you know because of
- 42:16this. After this it became the
- 42:19convention. But before this, no.
- 42:21It was like random person walks in the TARDIS.
- 42:24Do you have a name? Yes, I do.
- 42:26Great. Let's have an adventure.
- 42:28There was not a lot of fleshing out.
- 42:29What do we know about Dodo? She has an interchangeable
- 42:33accent. Yeah, she has an aunt who
- 42:36doesn't care about her, and that's about it.
- 42:38Yeah, it's not, It's not what you call a 360° portrait, is it?
- 42:44She's definitely the first person to say you come with me
- 42:47at the end of the story, isn't she?
- 42:50Also, but even like, what do you actually know about Ian and
- 42:54Barbara? They're great, but like, I all I
- 42:59know about them is they had a job in a school and they get
- 43:02the, the, the mystery's good. That gets them in there.
- 43:04And then these. But like, what do their parents
- 43:07do? Are they still alive?
- 43:08Do they have brothers and sisters?
- 43:09How did they get into teaching? Those wilderness books before?
- 43:13Are they are they going to be ofsteaded out of the profession
- 43:16or are they quite good teachers? Is Ian going for head of head of
- 43:20year? Maybe are they shagging that
- 43:22kind of thing? You.
- 43:23Know do they love asbestos poisoning?
- 43:25Yeah. I think it was a really savvy
- 43:28move as well to have her be such a strong character.
- 43:31And he's quite gentle. Like, I know he has to shower a
- 43:33bit and things like that, but in terms of who's dominating in
- 43:37that relationship, it's not him. Well, that's very different from
- 43:41classic Who, right? It's always the Doctor and then
- 43:44just the companion. This is more Grace's story than
- 43:46the Doctors. Well, I feel like maybe this is
- 43:49an extension of where the 7th Doctor and Ace were going, you
- 43:53know, because Ace was very much the kind of testosterone figure.
- 43:57Yeah. But, you know, Sylvester was
- 44:00very much, you know, standing elegantly in the background
- 44:03doing something devious and clever, but very gentle and
- 44:06Placid. And Ace was running around
- 44:08blowing things up and shooting people.
- 44:10Meanwhile, we've got we've got him pulling out the the pro
- 44:13camera. Yeah.
- 44:15I don't like that, yeah, but it's really gross.
- 44:18I don't like. It it's done to my wig, it's a
- 44:21little different drive. Get out of here and then a car
- 44:25just comes out and goes hey for no reason.
- 44:28I wonder, I wonder how many times they had to film that and
- 44:32how many how because that, you know, turning around in a car
- 44:35park at that speed, that's quite impressive.
- 44:38I wouldn't want to be having to do that and delivering dialogue
- 44:41as well. Seeing Eric Roberts like that, I
- 44:44ever want to sing Terminator music or Guns and Roses from
- 44:49Terminator 20. Yes, please.
- 44:53Yeah, that was the worst Axel Rose impression.
- 44:55I've ever heard you're welcome. Oh, he just peeled off his.
- 45:01Nail. So he was supposed to decompose.
- 45:04More over the course of the film, but apparently Eric
- 45:06Roberts had an allergic reaction to the makeup that they were
- 45:09putting on. Oh, they did.
- 45:10Yeah. So.
- 45:11He was going to look. He wasn't.
- 45:12Quite the deadly assassin master, But he was.
- 45:15He was going to rot, kind of. Thing.
- 45:17Yeah, exactly. That would have been.
- 45:18Brilliant do. You.
- 45:19Imagine it's Eric Roberts just. Didn't want to not look pretty.
- 45:23I mean, possibly, yeah. Do do we think it's right not to
- 45:26have a monster in this? Oh, that the.
- 45:29Snake. I think it would have been.
- 45:31More impactful if it had had something like the Daleks in it
- 45:36or some kind of new alien menace.
- 45:40Just having another human humanoid villain maybe isn't
- 45:44going to get you 10 million viewers every week.
- 45:48I don't know. This is a nice house, isn't it?
- 45:50She's earning a good, good money.
- 45:52Mind you, it could be Is it? Brian's house or?
- 45:55Is Brian sleeping around hers? He's taking the sofa so.
- 46:00This. Is is this the first time we've
- 46:01ever been in her companion's house as well You're.
- 46:05Getting a bit obsessed. With this, Dylan, are you going
- 46:07to be heading up to a knicker drawer in a minute?
- 46:11I think it is. We did go to the.
- 46:13Star liner. So technically we've been in
- 46:15Adric's house. Yeah, Fair, fair.
- 46:17So. As they came in just now, there
- 46:19was a little line of dialogue cut, the doctor says in the
- 46:23slightly longer version. I've never seen San Francisco
- 46:26when it was inhabited. There we go.
- 46:30And. We're going to, we're going to
- 46:32have a bit of. Dubbed things here because they
- 46:34got it wrong, he says. His math says I have.
- 46:38I have 12 lives, but he says 13. The way he moves her hand.
- 46:42Across so she can get the double heartbeat mad.
- 46:45The chemistry between them is just there, isn't it and I don't
- 46:49know why, but he just looks so sexy in that wig.
- 46:52I don't know it's it's that sort of Jane Austen Mr. Darcy thing,
- 46:55isn't it? He's just beautiful.
- 46:59Like, no offense to the. Other doctors, but they, they
- 47:03made a choice with this. That's like, if we're trying to
- 47:05sell it to America, it needs to be a suave, handsome English
- 47:08gent. It can't be, no offence,
- 47:11Sylvester Mcoy, but it can't be Sylvester Mcoy or even Tom
- 47:13Baker. You know, it's, it's so funny.
- 47:16It's wasn't it that RTD saw? This loved this and then put the
- 47:19romance in series 1 and 2 like immediately.
- 47:24Maybe, maybe we needed this stepping stone to get from
- 47:26Classic, you say immediately. It was.
- 47:29Almost 10 years, but I. Think it's there's not romance?
- 47:33Romance here there's oh, she's. Squatting.
- 47:38I remember when I was a kid, I was like, oh.
- 47:39My God, someone said crap in Doctor Who.
- 47:42Whatever next? I am a.
- 47:47Doctor. Oh yes, you.
- 47:49Are Oh, we love you, Grace. What?
- 47:53The fuck is going on with the riots?
- 47:56Yeah, it's bizarre. Like.
- 47:59We need like. The that's the only.
- 48:00Thing left to do with the 8th Doctor a big finish is do a box
- 48:04set with Grace and Chang Lee. They've been forced to bring her
- 48:08back as. Somebody else again to have had
- 48:10something out this year, haven't they?
- 48:13Oh, that. Line Don't be sad, Grace.
- 48:14You do amazing things. This is something that appears.
- 48:18In the early books, comics and audios.
- 48:22But is lost that thing that the 8th Doctor knows a bit about
- 48:26certain people's futures. I really like it.
- 48:28I think it's quite an interesting an interesting take.
- 48:31Well, it's funny as well when she.
- 48:32Says, oh, I don't want to know. Brian comes back.
- 48:35Don't tell me. I don't.
- 48:40Understand why she's. Going out, I mean, I I do, but
- 48:43she shouldn't be going out with someone as dismal as Brian,
- 48:46Matt, Michael. When we talked about this
- 48:48Donkeys years ago said that should have been the first we
- 48:52saw inside the TARDIS, that it would have such an impact if
- 48:56that was the first time I saw it.
- 48:57Yeah, totally. And it looks so.
- 48:59Good, I know. And I can't believe I'm going to
- 49:01say this, but I. Wouldn't lose McCoy painting
- 49:04malfunction the. Master.
- 49:06You put it towards the end as a. Flashback.
- 49:09Wouldn't that be? Odd.
- 49:11No, because the the whole. Thing is, the mystery is who is
- 49:14the Doctor? How did the Master end up here?
- 49:16It actually makes more sense if you have it as a reveal at the
- 49:19end rather than the beginning. You go, Oh well, he's one of my
- 49:22people and some complete lunatic.
- 49:25Has made this console room you know he's got a Instagram
- 49:28account beautiful pictures of it and there's and there's a guy
- 49:32in. America who owns the original
- 49:33console literally was got a tip off that they were emptying the
- 49:37skip out and he managed to get the original in America did you
- 49:43say? Yeah, and he takes it around
- 49:44conventions. Ian, are you available to give?
- 49:47Me a suck job or something to get that console?
- 49:50I mean, I could offer him £50. I don't know that I'd go much
- 49:53better than that, but yeah, leave it with me.
- 49:55Leave it with this. This is.
- 49:57Suggestive, right? Changley and the master.
- 50:00I'm not it's I know it's me, but it's there.
- 50:04Look, it's a. It's not.
- 50:05Just a sexy time for the Doctor. The way he uses the leather
- 50:10glove he sort. Of patched his face, you know,
- 50:12he seduces him with wealth and power, Yeah.
- 50:17And then there's a deleted scene.
- 50:19Where they're just rimming for half an hour.
- 50:22Oh, please have. You got it.
- 50:23I told you to watch the. Worker, dammit.
- 50:27Is it in? I'm not sure even I.
- 50:31Want to see? Eric.
- 50:31Roberts rimming the tongue work. Yeah.
- 50:36But like I feel with Doctor Who. Villas, you either get actors
- 50:39are willing to just go there and others are on and Eric Roberts
- 50:42just he just gives into it, doesn't he?
- 50:46Yeah, I've not really listened. To any of his.
- 50:48Return at Big Finish. How does he fare there, Joe?
- 50:51So funny. I mean he.
- 50:53Reminds me of Angela Bruce, every line that comes out of his
- 50:56mouth is so badly acted it's just heaven to listen to.
- 51:02Except for that dark Gallifrey. While I couldn't understand a
- 51:05fucking thing that was going on in that 10 God.
- 51:09We're about to have the scene, aren't?
- 51:10We these shoes, they fit perfectly.
- 51:14A meteor storm. This sky above us was dancing
- 51:17with lights. Oh my God.
- 51:19We're in love. How much did we love?
- 51:21The 8th Doctor watching this film back in the 90s absolutely.
- 51:25Now there was a. Thing at the time where
- 51:27everybody goes, oh, he's like an updated Tom Baker, but I don't
- 51:30think that's true. It's just because Tom was seen
- 51:33as the ultimate doctor. But like he's not he's not like
- 51:36any of them. He's he's the first of like a
- 51:39new breed. There's more.
- 51:41He's got more in common with 10 and to Matt Smith than he and
- 51:43Jodie than he has with Tom Baker and John Perkley.
- 51:47There is a reason why. They did the Charlie's in love
- 51:50with the 8th Doctor stuff. There's a reason why in the
- 51:53books they kept going to the romance angle because no Doctor
- 51:56had captured that sort of romantic spirit before.
- 51:58He's he's the first person they. Cast who is like objectively,
- 52:02visually attractive, maybe Peter Davis and certainly, certainly
- 52:07the the earlier Doctors were cast for being good actors of
- 52:10being household names rather than like John Pertwee.
- 52:13You wouldn't, would you? But but David.
- 52:16Davison's not a romantic character, and he's not great
- 52:19sexily. He's not a sexy show, however.
- 52:22You know there's a brilliant moment.
- 52:24In Vampire Science, the second novel from the 8th Doctor range,
- 52:28where the the character in it, Kramer goes, do you know how
- 52:32dangerous you are now? And she's taught, and it's not
- 52:35about about the allure of him being this attractive person
- 52:39talking to young women and offering them all of time and
- 52:42space she has to explain to. Him that he used to look like
- 52:46Sylvester McCoy. You have a different impact on
- 52:51people now, yeah. I love this speaking.
- 52:56Through the roundels. Yeah, I didn't forget the
- 52:58roundels. Did you see the bit as well
- 53:00where Daphne Ashbrook looks straight out the camera like the
- 53:03bloody Looney Tunes when the dogs were running off?
- 53:06Yeah. It shouldn't work.
- 53:09But it works none. Of it should.
- 53:10I mean, it's so. Different from everything we've
- 53:12had before. I just think it's so
- 53:14entertaining. 1,000,000 bucks only a million.
- 53:19OK 2 million think bigger. OK, I'll.
- 53:23Stop. Where does this master?
- 53:27Rank for you. That's a good one.
- 53:31He's. Fairly low, but only because
- 53:33he's only got 1 proper appearance.
- 53:36I think had he done more he'd probably be higher up.
- 53:39But I think Missy's my number one.
- 53:45I think it's Missy, Sasha, Dewan.
- 53:47Oh, he's better. Than Missy Missy.
- 53:50Doesn't go. I always dread it's let.
- 53:56Me think. It's it's Missy, then it's
- 53:59Ainley, then it's Eric for me Madness it's.
- 54:03Sasha. And then it's Delgado.
- 54:08And then it's Eric, probably for.
- 54:09Me nobody mentions. Anthony Ainley, did anyone?
- 54:14Mention Ainley. I did.
- 54:15Oh, he's in. My top three.
- 54:19All of this. Now you pulled the.
- 54:21Sword from the Stone Boom and this is another.
- 54:24Thing. Doctor Who fans got mad about
- 54:26wasn't it that well, I mean of Harmony was in the.
- 54:28Tardis. So this is a link to.
- 54:31The Eye of Harmony, which is on Gallifrey, and this is where the
- 54:34TARDIS gets his power from. So in RTD's first stab at Doctor
- 54:40Who, where Gallifrey's been destroyed in the Time War, the
- 54:43TARDIS wouldn't have any energy unless the Doctor's like filling
- 54:46it up on four-star we see the Eye of Harmony.
- 54:49In Journey to the centre of the TARDIS as well.
- 54:52Oh, and Boomtown, do you remember she tore open.
- 54:54The Tardis console and the light all came out, but it's I'm sure
- 54:57it's called the. Eye of Harmony in Journey to the
- 55:00Centre of the Tardis, but I just haven't seen that.
- 55:02For 4000. Years because life is too short
- 55:04I. Yeah, there's something about
- 55:06that series that just doesn't invite repeated viewing, but
- 55:11it's like. It's this is the problem with
- 55:13Doctor. Who fans, right, is they feel
- 55:15like once it's in one story, that's it.
- 55:17It's a fact. It's in the program guide and it
- 55:19can't be changed, altered or anything like that.
- 55:21I like it when they just go well, actually this part of the
- 55:25TARDIS, it's got its own. I have harmony in it, yeah, and
- 55:28why not? And.
- 55:29It looks fucking cool, you know, Looks like a giant Easter egg.
- 55:32Opening up to reveal the twigs, there's a very funny.
- 55:36Scene in the very last EDA where the AF Doctor goes into this
- 55:41room. It turns out he's been having
- 55:43chats with the Master in that ball entire book run.
- 55:48Which is basically the same idea.
- 55:50As the vault from season 10, right?
- 55:53That sort of thing, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:54Oh. Grace.
- 55:55Chris Chris is as a seduction technique.
- 55:58I know who I am. I'm a Time Lord from Gallifrey.
- 56:01We've all used that. Yeah, that's true.
- 56:02Yeah. OK.
- 56:04That's great, Ian, do it again. Flashbacks.
- 56:09God, you can hear. Look.
- 56:10You can hear the rage, the collective rage of fandom, the
- 56:14twitching, the. Twitching virginal fan going no,
- 56:18I want nothing to do with women. I want Doctor Who.
- 56:22Now we see McCoy. Here at one point there was a
- 56:26conversation about throwing in some of the other doctors as
- 56:28well, but it did not materialise for whatever reason they really
- 56:33didn't want. McCoy in this the BBC did they?
- 56:35I saw those memos where they were going.
- 56:38He is the reason it was cancelled and we don't want him
- 56:43associated with this. And was it Siegel?
- 56:45Someone insisted. Yeah, Siegel pushed for it.
- 56:48But. They, they were like, if we've
- 56:49got to have anyone, we should have Tom Baker, which
- 56:52essentially would have tried to work your way out of that one.
- 56:55Well, no, I think that what it would have.
- 56:57Done is almost decanonised this film because they it would have
- 57:02gone. Oh well, nothing in the 80s
- 57:03counted and I don't think people would have stood for it.
- 57:05And remember there was there was this conversation after this
- 57:10movie for years and years and years about whether the TV movie
- 57:13and Paul Mcgahn counted. It wasn't until human nature
- 57:16was. It when he was in the book where
- 57:17he was properly canonised in Queer as Folk.
- 57:21Written by Russell T Davis, the there's a Doctor Who fan and he
- 57:24says Paul Mcgahn doesn't count. Like I'm not saying that's
- 57:27Russell's view or was, it's just he's just building a character.
- 57:30But talking of Cannon. Guys.
- 57:34Ian, I'm going to ask you this question.
- 57:36The Doctor is half human. What do you think?
- 57:41I think it's like. You said a few moments ago that
- 57:44once some things presented once some people choose to assume
- 57:50that believe it's like law and it's a fact, and other people
- 57:54can just be like, yeah, no, not even that.
- 57:55That's nonsense. That's what the.
- 57:59Fear is, though, Bell. And Vinda, Layla and whoever
- 58:04it's. It's.
- 58:05It is. Law, it's law from the Leakley
- 58:07Bible and from the other drafts of this, like the other
- 58:11versions, the other pilots, they wrote that this reboot where the
- 58:15Doctor was on the quest for looking for his father Ulysses,
- 58:19who married an Earth woman and sent the Doctor back to
- 58:21Gallifrey. So it's it's a law that they're
- 58:24obviously because I think they thought, OK, we're not going to
- 58:26tell that story first, but we'll tell it at some point during a
- 58:30series. So it's just it's.
- 58:31Setting up. Something we never get.
- 58:33There's a Now we're trying to reconcile he's.
- 58:35Half human, but he's a timeless child.
- 58:38He's not even from Gallifrey, Kate Orman and John Blumrath.
- 58:42They write an amazing A Doctor Called Unnatural History where
- 58:46his timeline is rewritten throughout the entire book and
- 58:49at one point it's half human and another point he's like the
- 58:52Timeless child. And it's like.
- 58:54Well, it's whatever we've done to him today.
- 58:56They're all true and just go with it.
- 58:59It's got to contradict itself, this stuff, and who cares?
- 59:03Yeah, You can't have something that's been going for. 65 years
- 59:06with a million writers behind it, different producers and
- 59:09expect it to be the next 20 minutes of.
- 59:12This movie. Are just heaven.
- 59:14It's the two of them off having adventures now.
- 59:17Indie Institute in a minute. It's just so funny.
- 59:20This is a sort of peek into what we could have had going forward,
- 59:23I think. The wigs doing something else
- 59:29now it's. Oh yeah, it looks like it's been
- 59:31raining. He's gone a bit, Liam.
- 59:32Gallagher in in. 90. Seven, we can sit down, have a
- 59:35cup of tea, we can talk about it.
- 59:37Reasonably sure a time not to Earthling.
- 59:41Sit down, have a. Cup of tea we can talk about.
- 59:43It take your trousers off. Why does he walk through the
- 59:46window now? Because he can.
- 59:48Because the the like. Everything's being.
- 59:50Disrupted by the Eye of harmony being Yeah sucks so being sucked
- 59:54the. World out molecularly.
- 59:56Breaking down, he says. By by midnight tonight.
- 59:59Tonight, this planet didn't. Side out that was.
- 1:00:03Part of the trailer, wasn't it? Yeah.
- 1:00:05Probably hang on midnight tonight.
- 1:00:07This. If you could walk through
- 1:00:09windows. Can't you walk through people?
- 1:00:11And brick walls. And it's not all molecules, it's
- 1:00:14just some. And he's noticed that this
- 1:00:16window is looking at this one window.
- 1:00:18He's like, oh, that's. That's useful.
- 1:00:21Unfortunately, I've got to make. This point and that windows.
- 1:00:24Wibbling OK, Doctor. Doctor, doctor, come.
- 1:00:30On she needs an ambulance. And Ian, yeah.
- 1:00:38You know. Regenerating and.
- 1:00:40Sucking the earth inside out. Yeah, that's a great way to lose
- 1:00:44weight, you know? Is it?
- 1:00:46That's what I'm hearing. Hang on man, Get sucking.
- 1:00:50All right. Oh dear.
- 1:00:56Mark love these two. You know the two newsreaders in
- 1:00:58Hawaii. It has actually started snowing,
- 1:01:02she goes. That's West.
- 1:01:04Trinity Wells at this. Point is, she still maybe a
- 1:01:07junior production assistant or something.
- 1:01:09You don't know this because it wasn't made in the 90s.
- 1:01:11But she actually turned up in every Doctor Who 90s story that
- 1:01:14news reader commenting on, on the bizarre things that were
- 1:01:18happening. It started.
- 1:01:21Snowing on the. Scarrow.
- 1:01:26Oh, this is some torrid invasion.
- 1:01:28Fleet heading to the Mutter spiral.
- 1:01:31That's right. And after the break I found.
- 1:01:33A new way to do with fish Cut his head off.
- 1:01:38Yeah. Chop his head off.
- 1:01:40Oh. Beginning of San Francisco mean
- 1:01:42time the most accurate atomic. Clock in the world, apparently.
- 1:01:49So that means we've got a scientific institute.
- 1:01:51We've got a head too, right? Definitely got to go there.
- 1:01:54Going all Perkway now. Yeah.
- 1:01:57Excellent. I bet there's a mad scientist.
- 1:01:59Doing something naughty? Oh boy, look who's at the door.
- 1:02:03It's Robert Patrick. Oh my God.
- 1:02:08Oh no, I can't reel off all the lines.
- 1:02:11In the ambulance in a minute. But God does she kiss as good as
- 1:02:14you as well as you. Freud had a name for that.
- 1:02:20Transfer. Oh, you know.
- 1:02:22Him. Oh, I know it all, yeah.
- 1:02:27Would we, would we like to see Matthew?
- 1:02:28Jacobs have another. Star but a Doctor Who episode?
- 1:02:32Well, you've done it for a previous.
- 1:02:33Episode of two Opera. TV.
- 1:02:35No, absolutely. But would would you like to?
- 1:02:37See him do something for telly. I'd love to see him do a Doctor
- 1:02:41Who. Story that's just coming from
- 1:02:45him. He's not been given a shopping
- 1:02:46list. He's not being told he's got to
- 1:02:48incorporate this or justify that or wreck on this.
- 1:02:52Just do whatever you want because the way he writes the
- 1:02:55dialogue and the characters is so they're so attractive.
- 1:02:59They're so they're so much fun to spend time with that I think
- 1:03:03he could do a really wonderful Doctor Who.
- 1:03:06It's the key to this, right? Is that the?
- 1:03:09It is funny and the characters are enjoyable to be with so many
- 1:03:12Doctor Who's have died on the fact that they're, you know,
- 1:03:15worthy and dull. Exactly.
- 1:03:19Planet of Evil, for example, those chickens, my God, they're
- 1:03:24all off to the chlorine factory. It's also.
- 1:03:28Little touches like. You wouldn't have got that in
- 1:03:31classic Doctor Who necessarily. That sung.
- 1:03:33OK, there's what is the crash, the roads blocked.
- 1:03:36You'd be stuck inside the vehicle the whole time.
- 1:03:38And they go, no, it's a bunch of chickens all over the road.
- 1:03:40Yeah, yeah. Right, let's skip sequence with
- 1:03:45the copper. Now I'll shoot myself.
- 1:03:47It's just heaven. This for me is is the, you know,
- 1:03:50this is. The best bit of 8th Doctor we
- 1:03:52got and this is the best bit of the best bit.
- 1:03:55That sequence blooming, although are you pleased?
- 1:03:58Have you ever seen the? Outtakes the bit where everyone
- 1:04:01here around the crash goes give him the gun.
- 1:04:04They cut that bit out, thank God.
- 1:04:11Stop. He's British.
- 1:04:13He's. British.
- 1:04:15It's true. I'm.
- 1:04:16Always. I'm always about to get shot.
- 1:04:18And someone has to do the same for me.
- 1:04:20Fucking Jelly babies for God's. Sakes, they've been in that.
- 1:04:25Pocket for at least 4. Regenerations.
- 1:04:27They're not going to be fresh Jelly babies.
- 1:04:29They're going to be quite. They aren't even his.
- 1:04:32They've got to be the. Jelly babies of the guy who was
- 1:04:35going to dress up as Wild Bill Hickok because he hasn't seen
- 1:04:37anywhere to get him. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:04:39He's not wearing like a A. Time Nord coat from space that
- 1:04:42has dimensionally transcendental pockets.
- 1:04:45The slight hysteria in. Daphne's voice when she goes.
- 1:04:48All right, give him the keys. Yeah.
- 1:04:52Yeah. She would have been great for a
- 1:04:55run, wouldn't? She.
- 1:04:56Absolutely, I could see these. Guys, probably with Chang Lee as
- 1:05:00well. Yeah, yeah, totally getting 20.
- 1:05:024 episodes on Fox. I mean, I imagine a historical.
- 1:05:06With this sort of. Budget.
- 1:05:07It would be incredible. The thing is, a series wouldn't
- 1:05:10have had this sort of budget. Would it?
- 1:05:12This is the pilot episode for 90 minutes.
- 1:05:15Yeah, you. Remember that £18 million dig
- 1:05:20space? Nine episode I was telling you
- 1:05:21about to recoup costs for the rest of the season.
- 1:05:24They never left the station. It was so expensive.
- 1:05:29Oh fuck this chase sequence. I.
- 1:05:39Didn't think I was ever going to see anything.
- 1:05:41More exciting than this in Doctor Who and I'm not sure I
- 1:05:43have What about the episode 3 Planet of the?
- 1:05:46Spiders. The Tramp.
- 1:05:49Being run over by the hover crowd.
- 1:05:52It's the. Editing when you know when the
- 1:05:54bike. Goes between the two, yeah, but
- 1:05:57they're there. Woo fucking hell.
- 1:06:00Imagine trying to be the. Stuntman and Keep.
- 1:06:02That absolutely straight, knowing that you've got very
- 1:06:05little wiggle room. Chang Lee is not a bad driver,
- 1:06:08is he? No.
- 1:06:10He's a gang member, he's quite. Good, he's.
- 1:06:12Had a few escapes from the police I.
- 1:06:14Imagine. He probably went on to working
- 1:06:16maybe. As a driver in IndyCar, who
- 1:06:19knows, there are many ways you could say the words this.
- 1:06:22Is an ambulance. But Eric Roberts, man, this is
- 1:06:27an ambulance. Cry.
- 1:06:32Do we remember the build? Up to.
- 1:06:34This whole thing happening and the excitement or lack of,
- 1:06:38perhaps yes, because Doctor Who Magazine had nothing to.
- 1:06:40Talk about for 10 years. And so they just said anything,
- 1:06:44anything. I would say they.
- 1:06:45Doubled down on it if anything. But I remember all the TV
- 1:06:48trailers, there was one that was like the Eurovision and it ended
- 1:06:52with Gina G and then it was. And then at 9:00, he's back and
- 1:06:55it's about time. And just those, you know, the
- 1:06:59like, like Joe was sort of picking out shots that he
- 1:07:02remembered from the trailers, from the adverts.
- 1:07:04It was so exciting for me. But you know, I can't imagine.
- 1:07:08Anyone. Not wanting to watch it, I'm
- 1:07:11aware that there are people out there who you know, sadly are
- 1:07:14not of most of America. Unfortunately, doesn't.
- 1:07:17Sure. Yeah, well, they were watching.
- 1:07:19Roseanne on the other side, isn't it?
- 1:07:21UK It was. Every bit a hit as.
- 1:07:24Rose was. Right, yeah, 99.96 or something.
- 1:07:28Yeah, they wanted more I. Think bank holiday.
- 1:07:31Monday. BBC wanted more.
- 1:07:33Didn't they? They just didn't pay.
- 1:07:34For it, yeah, yeah. Echoes.
- 1:07:38Of echoes of for. Now, oh, there's another.
- 1:07:42One from the trailer I finally. Meet the right guy and he's from
- 1:07:45another planet. They do look very.
- 1:07:48Mulder and Scully. Don't they?
- 1:07:50I know he's got longer hair, but it's Mulder and Scully.
- 1:07:53They thought, all right, let's, let's key into the the zeitgeist
- 1:07:56of the 90s. We want a dark haired man who's
- 1:07:59quite nice to look at and a red haired lady who's a Doctor Who's
- 1:08:03quite nice to look at. And he's the he's the eternal
- 1:08:06sort. Of believer and she's so
- 1:08:09sceptical of everything. I think it's got potential.
- 1:08:14Yeah, they are at the Institute of.
- 1:08:15Scientific research. I believe that is where the most
- 1:08:19accurate timepiece of all time is situated.
- 1:08:24This is quite a. Posh well attended.
- 1:08:27Gathering to see a clock getting turned on isn't it?
- 1:08:30It's also so many extras like. You don't.
- 1:08:32You didn't see extras like this in Doctor Who back then or or
- 1:08:35now, really. We did it earlier.
- 1:08:37Do you remember that crowd cheering in the pirate planet
- 1:08:39of? Fire people, Yeah.
- 1:08:46Yeah, they're flaunting. Actually, that looks like a.
- 1:08:48Nice dude, doesn't it? That does, I imagine.
- 1:08:51Probably this. Was like the last night of
- 1:08:53shooting and then they had the wrap party in here straight away
- 1:08:56and probably catering I imagine Probably the balloon budget must
- 1:09:00have gone through the roof. Oh, now let here we go behind
- 1:09:04the scenes. Oh, it's the.
- 1:09:05Clock There it is, the world's most.
- 1:09:09Rubbish looking clock. Where's the thing for this with
- 1:09:14with the bit that? Tells the.
- 1:09:15Time. Why is that not this?
- 1:09:19I couldn't believe this Dick. Joke about little things?
- 1:09:22Yeah, they say that on my planet, too.
- 1:09:25Yeah, fortunately I'm packing. Serious.
- 1:09:28Meat. Oh no, he's talking in Doctor
- 1:09:33Who. Programme guide again.
- 1:09:37Oh I love. Professor Wag, he's coming.
- 1:09:39Up now, yeah. Hello little cheeky man Grace.
- 1:09:42Says that you have a big. Secret.
- 1:09:45What is it? My penis.
- 1:09:48It's. Half human.
- 1:09:54Oh, I've watched Grace now when she's offered the wine of the.
- 1:09:57Champagne. And she goes, oh, it's so.
- 1:10:01Great. I love, I love the.
- 1:10:05The Doctor's. Little.
- 1:10:07Hoobie Doobie here and he takes off the the ID from Professor
- 1:10:11Wag. I'm half human on my mother
- 1:10:14side. I feel like this was sort.
- 1:10:16Of heavy in Russells mind. You know when he did RTD one,
- 1:10:19why didn't he watch it again before we did RTD 2 to entertain
- 1:10:25us? Yeah, it was.
- 1:10:27Too busy doing copious. Amounts of cocaine.
- 1:10:29I imagine. Oh, fair enough.
- 1:10:30I mean, I don't really care. About the story here.
- 1:10:33They're running around having a great time, being witty and
- 1:10:35sexy. It's perfect.
- 1:10:37Doctor Who. You can.
- 1:10:38You can. Turn the sound down for 10
- 1:10:39minutes to talk to your wife or whatever and still follow it
- 1:10:43perfectly. Which is just the sound on then
- 1:10:45I haven't at all. No, I'm I'm soundless.
- 1:10:48But a beryllium atomic clock? Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:10:53What is that? That he's taken out.
- 1:10:54Of it, it's a, it's a Mac Guffin, yeah.
- 1:10:58One of those is. It is it as ridiculously
- 1:11:01implausible as like the? TARDIS has run out of Zytan 7.
- 1:11:04However, we have landed on the one planet that makes Zytan 7.
- 1:11:09What are they fits with? Classic.
- 1:11:10Code then oh this. Fella Gareth, right, he also did
- 1:11:13one of Toby's. He did the inferno happy times
- 1:11:17and places and you know, you sort of send in videos of your
- 1:11:20favorite things from each episode.
- 1:11:21You dressed up as the Brigadier with the scar.
- 1:11:24You dressed up as a prime odds. He's a Doctor Who geek, you
- 1:11:28know. Oh bless.
- 1:11:31Answer the second. Question the first.
- 1:11:33Me look easier, but answer the second question now I'm going to
- 1:11:37ask you fellows about. Bakaki now, because in a moment
- 1:11:41we're going to see a load of people covered in slime and
- 1:11:46stuff. Is that the sort of thing?
- 1:11:48Is that what it is? Well, if you Google it, you'll.
- 1:11:52Find out. You're right, I'd rather you
- 1:11:55just. Explained.
- 1:11:57It's. It's not.
- 1:11:58Too dissimilar. No.
- 1:12:00So there is a cut scene. Oh, these men are literally
- 1:12:03covered in it. Where?
- 1:12:04You see the master and Changli. Encounter those guys, but you
- 1:12:08don't actually see him shoot the cum all over them, so it's a bit
- 1:12:12confusing, isn't it? It's like they're down there,
- 1:12:15we're up here and I think it was simply cut for timing reasons.
- 1:12:19Which is a bit unfortunate. I don't.
- 1:12:21Yeah, but that's a timing malfunction.
- 1:12:23Was it Dylan? No.
- 1:12:24It might have been, Yeah. Oh, we're.
- 1:12:26Going full on. Indiana Jones now.
- 1:12:30Well, sorry, we're in different places, you and me.
- 1:12:32No. It's the same.
- 1:12:34It's. The same thing.
- 1:12:36Down on the the. The fire.
- 1:12:38Hose onto the motorbike? Oh no, it's onto a car.
- 1:12:43It's onto a police car, isn't? It, yeah, but it's.
- 1:12:45Very Hollywood. There's music.
- 1:12:46It's like. That's the slowest descent I've
- 1:12:53ever seen. Yeah, it should have just gone
- 1:12:56broke. Their legs, I can't believe
- 1:12:58they've gone to the effort in that scene where they're.
- 1:13:00Inside to see that man Hoover in and they've hired someone to
- 1:13:03Hoover. They've had a special.
- 1:13:06Hoover Wrangler, who was. Working with the Hoover in the
- 1:13:09green room before the film the scene.
- 1:13:11Do you work well with props? Good with Henry?
- 1:13:16Now they're doctor and companion now, aren't they?
- 1:13:18It's. There, back on the bike.
- 1:13:21Would you guys? Want to know what the future
- 1:13:23holds? Yeah, I think I'm, I'm, I'm.
- 1:13:27Curious, I think I would. You're assuming Oscars are
- 1:13:30ahead. For you, Dylan and Ian, you're
- 1:13:33going to release a fabulous series of tones.
- 1:13:37Witty. Most you know, the best read
- 1:13:41writer since JK Rowling. Oops.
- 1:13:43Well, that was I did. I did Winter Hill maybe 10 years
- 1:13:47ago, so my my life's work is over.
- 1:13:50I'm just on borrowed time now and I kind of don't want to know
- 1:13:53how little I've got left. So I ain't going to die next
- 1:13:56week with a podcast mic. In my hand, you know.
- 1:13:59Well, you. You will.
- 1:14:00Try and shove it in places where it's not supposed to go.
- 1:14:03Joe, I've told you about this. We've all tried to wipe it.
- 1:14:07Good God. This microphone.
- 1:14:10It fits perfectly. This visual gag of the.
- 1:14:14Policemen going into the Tardis. It's brilliant, it's lovely,
- 1:14:17it's long. Overdue.
- 1:14:19And we've had it, you know not. Quite this gag.
- 1:14:21But we've had motorbikes and various things shoot in and out
- 1:14:24of the TARDIS since since then. Yeah.
- 1:14:27Well, tell you what though, you couldn't get a car through.
- 1:14:28It. You.
- 1:14:30Well, there's some EDA writers, yes.
- 1:14:34That's that's a Michael Collier. Joke.
- 1:14:37Do you know Moffy have Clara Oswald?
- 1:14:39Drive a motorbike into the target the last time the three
- 1:14:42of us met up. We we basically specialized,
- 1:14:46don't we in. Covering episodes where people
- 1:14:48drive motorbikes into the charges.
- 1:14:51There's only two though, right? If.
- 1:14:52It happens again, the batch signal will go up.
- 1:14:55We need to do the Adidas Lantern then we've done all three.
- 1:14:58That's one coming out, yeah. Oh, now this I don't.
- 1:15:02Like this is. Very Clara Oswald What?
- 1:15:04She walks into the TARDIS and knows all of the spatial
- 1:15:08discrepancy. But isn't that because that's
- 1:15:11because the? Masters like.
- 1:15:15Venom is. Overtaking her?
- 1:15:16I thought she was just being sarcastic.
- 1:15:18And going along with her and and.
- 1:15:20But didn't really believe a word of it.
- 1:15:22I did think her black contacts were very.
- 1:15:24Scary when I was younger. She does a good evil smile.
- 1:15:31OK, so could somebody please sort of explain the?
- 1:15:33End of the film to me then. So the the TARDIS eye is open,
- 1:15:38so it's sucking off the world. Yeah.
- 1:15:40And the Master has taken the Doctor's lives.
- 1:15:43Yeah, and she. Reverses it.
- 1:15:46She reverses the polarity. Of the neutron flow essentially
- 1:15:49presses a big red button. Big, big.
- 1:15:51Big big red reset button. OK.
- 1:15:54OK, at least I don't try and. Pretend it's clever.
- 1:15:59Is there a little like? Thermos.
- 1:16:01Yeah. Is that, Oh, a little little
- 1:16:03blue glass flask. I wonder what was in that.
- 1:16:08Oh, this is great. Look, they're already in.
- 1:16:09The arguing married couple phase.
- 1:16:12You must have to go back. You must.
- 1:16:15What about Gareth? Me.
- 1:16:16The city. So for God's sweet, shut up.
- 1:16:20Sweet, sweet, sweet. Greece.
- 1:16:22Greece. Greece.
- 1:16:22Greece. Greece.
- 1:16:25Is he Welsh? Yeah.
- 1:16:27Do you know who I think he the the biggest parallel to?
- 1:16:29Classic who Directors Jeffrey Sachs is Michael Ferguson.
- 1:16:32He's always shooting through things, isn't he?
- 1:16:35He's always trying to make it look as interesting as possible
- 1:16:39and he does a great. Job.
- 1:16:41There's so much. Energy in the direction of this?
- 1:16:44Is there anyone in the new series that's?
- 1:16:46Come as good as this direction. Maybe Rachel Talley?
- 1:16:51I think Jamie Magda. Stone as well as a fantastic
- 1:16:55director, you know, they asked him to do Rose.
- 1:16:58Jeffrey Sachs and he said no. He he was busy.
- 1:17:02Or something like that, but. They asked Edgar Wright, they
- 1:17:04asked Joe Cornish, they asked Jeffrey Sachs, and they ended up
- 1:17:07with Keith MO Well at. Least he was fourth choice.
- 1:17:15I'm sure there are. Others, yeah.
- 1:17:17They asked. They asked.
- 1:17:18Me. I hadn't even Yeah directed.
- 1:17:21I would have loved to have seen that, Ian.
- 1:17:23Oh, isn't the rest of the story Paul McGowan in Manacles?
- 1:17:27Yeah, it's it's a bit Clockwork Orange.
- 1:17:29And those things when you go to the optician, they.
- 1:17:31Force your eyes open when you read out the letters.
- 1:17:34He has to wear a big pair of those.
- 1:17:36We've got to watch Clockwork Orange because it's on Mark's
- 1:17:38poster. Of 100 films you've got to
- 1:17:40watch. It's so scary, that movie.
- 1:17:42It's a great film, though. Oh boy, it's not it's.
- 1:17:44Not scary. It frightened the life out of
- 1:17:46me. I've not done.
- 1:17:47Drugs. Since, Oh no, I'm thinking of
- 1:17:50another movie, what am I thinking of?
- 1:17:51Ghostbusters 2, I imagine. Thinking Requiem for a dream for
- 1:17:55fuck. Oh no, that was that was.
- 1:17:57Upsetting. That's a very depressing film,
- 1:18:00yeah. How did I get from there to?
- 1:18:02There, it's a tough. Wank, but it can be done.
- 1:18:05Look, always. Dress.
- 1:18:08For the occasion, he looks so fucking gorgeous in that he
- 1:18:12does. I like the redesigned time.
- 1:18:14Lord collars as well. Look, yeah.
- 1:18:16Do you like it a bit smaller in that respect?
- 1:18:18Do you think it? I know it's ridiculous, but it
- 1:18:21looks more natural. Weirdly, yeah.
- 1:18:26Dylan, can you wear? That for your wedding please.
- 1:18:30Come down the stairs. Like.
- 1:18:31That oh. God, oh, I'll be your.
- 1:18:34Racing Child. All right, and.
- 1:18:39Then I'll be cut. Bakaki the crowd.
- 1:18:41Oh wonderful. What a night.
- 1:18:46Yeah, I have no. Idea what's happening now he's.
- 1:18:49Planning to steal the gang Suddenly looks ginger.
- 1:18:51Yeah. And Daphne Ashbrook.
- 1:18:53Looks demonic. Look at how I've never really
- 1:18:56noticed that harmony, but if you're more coming towards.
- 1:18:59You with that equipment looking like that I would assume?
- 1:19:04I was having that. That dream again, what the hell
- 1:19:08what's happening here? We've.
- 1:19:09Suddenly gone into a. Costume party we were talking
- 1:19:11about earlier, Elvis. Dancing with the.
- 1:19:13The Prince Regent from Blackadder 3 shot of the moon
- 1:19:17woman looking straight out. The cameras How does a tie dye a
- 1:19:21balloon? Because it doesn't have to be
- 1:19:23this stylistic. But they they've just gone to
- 1:19:27everything has been thought about and considered and just
- 1:19:29made it the best version of it can possibly be.
- 1:19:32So that guy we just saw in the sheet.
- 1:19:34He was going to be dressed as Wild Bill Hickok, but his
- 1:19:37costume got stolen. I think that was a detail from
- 1:19:39the novelisation maybe, but I think they've realised.
- 1:19:44As well as as called witty and enjoyable as this is, the part
- 1:19:47is a bit of a dog. And so they've just said direct
- 1:19:52the hell out of it. People will love it.
- 1:19:54And we do. Yeah.
- 1:19:55Just make it fun, make it fast. Moving and and the plot is just
- 1:19:59something that you got to have. But really it's all about the
- 1:20:02the charisma of the leads. There was too many execs from
- 1:20:06my. Understanding in terms of not
- 1:20:08just the casting, but in terms of the plot that they just could
- 1:20:10not agree on anything. Talking of RTD two, yeah.
- 1:20:15Oh yeah, quite. Oh, this is.
- 1:20:17Great. What do you mean it doesn't work
- 1:20:19about the? Clock and the scientist goes
- 1:20:23it's fucked mate. Oh God, we've only got 2 minutes
- 1:20:26and the world is doomed. Oh no.
- 1:20:29Oh shit fellas, this has been. On for an hour, it's flown by.
- 1:20:33It really. Has it always did It always does
- 1:20:36it? Always will.
- 1:20:38Oh, she let you really take a breath, does it?
- 1:20:40I. Really fancy her with the black
- 1:20:42contact lenses. I don't.
- 1:20:43Fancy Eric Roberts actually looking like a snake?
- 1:20:49Yeah. Oh, we're all just, we're all
- 1:20:50just looking. We're all just sitting there
- 1:20:52thinking where? Can I get someone to make me
- 1:20:54that? Costume that Eric Roberts is
- 1:20:55wearing. I'm on that.
- 1:20:57I'm on that in my In My Love play wardrobe.
- 1:21:00Did you did you see this this. Sorry.
- 1:21:03The Eye of Harmony room it was. They released a photo of it in
- 1:21:07the Radio Times beforehand. And I just remember thinking,
- 1:21:10that's the TARDIS, This is going to be the best thing ever
- 1:21:14because it was just, your instincts are always so right,
- 1:21:16Dylan. You know, good grief.
- 1:21:21I mean, I would have come back and said we're not.
- 1:21:22Doing it, we're not doing rows unless we recreate this console.
- 1:21:26I do wonder if the reason so. Much of it is set.
- 1:21:29In the TARDIS is because it was a very expensive set, I would
- 1:21:34assume so, yeah, it's like we've really got to.
- 1:21:37Amortize the shit out of this. Probably 24 episodes would have
- 1:21:40all been set in the TARDIS. It does make those new.
- 1:21:45Series Tardises look very small. Though, doesn't it?
- 1:21:48Even now and then we do get a big.
- 1:21:50TARDIS, There's no, there's no, that's it.
- 1:21:53There's no personality to it. Not like this.
- 1:21:56But then the other side of it is like, you know, when the TARDIS?
- 1:21:59Does all wobbly action and is flying through space and is hit
- 1:22:03by something. Those books on the shelves in
- 1:22:05here would be flying around all the time in an armchair.
- 1:22:09I don't think Grace just gave consent then to have all that.
- 1:22:12Slime sucked out of her mouth. No, but sometimes when it takes
- 1:22:16you in the moment, you're just going to go with us.
- 1:22:18Oh, remember that, Dylan. All right.
- 1:22:22He's that costume. He's.
- 1:22:24Sort of. Unconsciously kind of making me
- 1:22:27think of the Francis Ford Coppola Dracula.
- 1:22:31You know, there is a there is a sort of coded villainy.
- 1:22:35It's the Reds, isn't it? It's Reds.
- 1:22:36It's blacks. It's the flappy.
- 1:22:38Diaphanous. Flow of the thing.
- 1:22:40I mean, he does look a bit more cadaverous now, doesn't?
- 1:22:43He he does, he does. And he also looks a lot, a lot
- 1:22:47more the. Master and a lot less Bruce.
- 1:22:49And it's not it's, it's a facial thing.
- 1:22:51It's an acting thing. He's sort of more alive the more
- 1:22:55dead his body becomes. It's it's quite a subtle,
- 1:22:59nuanced performance from Eric Roberts.
- 1:23:01I've never said that before. Well, he's too, for a given.
- 1:23:06Value of subtle, you know we get.
- 1:23:08Like, I mean, it's edited to hell in a minute, right?
- 1:23:10This whole sequence now, TARDIS, electric, going everywhere, back
- 1:23:14to the party, the Doctor's lives being taken.
- 1:23:17Yes, it's very confusing, but I will forgive it.
- 1:23:20Anything for the jokes that are in there.
- 1:23:22The bit when Grace rips out all the wires and goes, oh God, what
- 1:23:26have I done? Like she doesn't know what she's
- 1:23:29doing. That's great.
- 1:23:31It is lovely. Doctor No, he's not really a bit
- 1:23:37like a tenant finale. It doesn't really get much to
- 1:23:39do, does he? No and Grace saves today and
- 1:23:42this was another reason. Why people had an issue with?
- 1:23:44It she thought surgery was difficult, but there we go.
- 1:23:48I like all the stuff of the masters, sort of.
- 1:23:50Phasing. Like face phasing in and out of
- 1:23:54morphing and reality it's. Very cool and.
- 1:23:57Explosions all over the console. Yeah, those sparks, man.
- 1:24:00I mean, that's given me classic. Who that?
- 1:24:02Little sparks coming off. Oh come on, Grace, this cat's
- 1:24:06cradle. But you can do.
- 1:24:07It 30 seconds. Who doesn't love a good
- 1:24:11countdown and. We sort of know all these
- 1:24:15people. Now we sort of care about them a
- 1:24:17little. Bit right.
- 1:24:17We were laughing with him earlier, the CGI for Eric
- 1:24:22Roberts sort of taking the Doctor's lives.
- 1:24:24That has not aged too well though.
- 1:24:25I said no, but it's a cool idea. Yeah, I mean, I'm enjoying it
- 1:24:31and it's visually striking. Still in a way that me is that
- 1:24:35we hit the deadline. And the world does get ripped
- 1:24:38apart, and then it gets unripped apart.
- 1:24:41Yeah, they reverse it. They reverse the polarity of the
- 1:24:43neutron floja. Oh God, my head's spinning.
- 1:24:48Just but. I don't really.
- 1:24:52Understand it because if the planet was destroyed, it would
- 1:24:54always be destroyed. So there'd be no Doctor Who
- 1:24:57stories after the Millennium. It's undestroyed.
- 1:25:02Undestroyed. Probably something to do with
- 1:25:04the Millennium. Bug right?
- 1:25:06I have seen many new series episodes with worse.
- 1:25:09Climaxes than this exactly. Oh God, I'm alive.
- 1:25:16Did you say subtle, William? I did say for.
- 1:25:20A given value of subtle. That's Eric Roberts.
- 1:25:22Subtle. By God.
- 1:25:24Man, there's so many clocks on the screen.
- 1:25:29I like. That Tardis thinking Oh.
- 1:25:31I know what to do, but you know what you get now?
- 1:25:35You get a. Really.
- 1:25:37Violent fight between the Doctor and the Master.
- 1:25:39And I don't think we've ever seen that.
- 1:25:41Or maybe the end of getting there at the end of survival.
- 1:25:44Yeah. But this is like, you know.
- 1:25:46They're younger, they're they've both lost a bit of timber.
- 1:25:49They can really grapple like men.
- 1:25:51It's not like the Sea Devils, you know, when they were just
- 1:25:53having that sword fight and he was eating a.
- 1:25:54Sandwich. Sandwich.
- 1:25:56Yeah, it really feels like he. Wants to murder the fucker,
- 1:25:59yeah. It's a fight for the death,
- 1:26:01isn't it, He? Grabs that big pole and it
- 1:26:04smashes everywhere. Yeah, right.
- 1:26:07Stonehenge gone. Moscow.
- 1:26:09Gone the Houses of Parliament. Gone Statue of Liberty our.
- 1:26:11Favorite characters from murder in the film Gone?
- 1:26:14Gareth gone, Professor. Wag No Oh.
- 1:26:18Oh dear, Oh dear. Oh.
- 1:26:20Straight into the title. Sequence.
- 1:26:21Yeah, normally there's more of a.
- 1:26:25An uplifting ending. They've decided to go with a
- 1:26:28dark Your life force is dying. OK, they're just making this.
- 1:26:32Shit up now. The plan didn't work because I
- 1:26:36blinked and my eyes. Were upside.
- 1:26:37Down. Can you do the no Ian, which one
- 1:26:41I. I can't remember if Eric Roberts
- 1:26:43just. Going no.
- 1:26:46I I can't do it because I'm so. Hungover.
- 1:26:50I can't guarantee what would happen if I if I gave that
- 1:26:53deeply. I do.
- 1:26:55What's the Temple orbit? We don't know.
- 1:26:57I do. Like the masters line in a
- 1:26:58minute where he goes like life. Is wasted on the living.
- 1:27:02Yeah, it's the sort of thing I'm.
- 1:27:05Pretty sure Judge Death used to say that quite a lot.
- 1:27:09Oh Grace. Oh you bugger.
- 1:27:13I'm I'm. Gonna have you fella.
- 1:27:15Hair you. Apart making me wear this metal
- 1:27:19waist coat from Cyber Woman you've left me.
- 1:27:23Out on the climax of the. Movie, OH.
- 1:27:25Look at that shot now of him. Woo fuck, that's proper nasty.
- 1:27:30Yeah, you are my. Life he's tried being.
- 1:27:32Clever, He's tried to steal his. Lives.
- 1:27:35Now it's just about bludgeoning him to death.
- 1:27:38Mcgahn's line is very camp, though.
- 1:27:40He goes. You want dominion.
- 1:27:41Over the living all you do is kill.
- 1:27:44If I could have one prop from. This.
- 1:27:47It'd be one of those Staffs, I think, with Raxel on, on.
- 1:27:51Oh no, I'd have Eric Roberts costume, Yeah.
- 1:27:54For sure. I'd love to wear that down the
- 1:27:56High Street. I bet it's still.
- 1:27:59Smell of success? Oh my, what's going on now?
- 1:28:04It's all done with mirrors. You know it.
- 1:28:06It turns out the master can be defeated if you shine a.
- 1:28:09Torch in his face. Oh, he's being sucked right off
- 1:28:15now. I like I.
- 1:28:16Like the doctor sort of extended her hand, but it was.
- 1:28:19Very clear. How does, Yeah.
- 1:28:21It's like if you could just get a little bit closer, yeah.
- 1:28:27We've got to get him chlorine at the.
- 1:28:28Air. No.
- 1:28:32God, I had an option. Oh my, there's a reason.
- 1:28:38We keep coming back to the master.
- 1:28:39Though, right? Because.
- 1:28:40He's so much fun, he really is. He can be just looking.
- 1:28:45At Mcgann's wig now, because you can kind.
- 1:28:47Of see the. It's a temporal orbit, chaps.
- 1:28:51It's. It's the time.
- 1:28:52It's the time. You're orbiting in, so like just
- 1:28:57the now, yeah. Yeah, how does that work?
- 1:29:01In plot terms here, then it's. Like they pause the TARDIS and
- 1:29:05the Earth. Just at the moment of its
- 1:29:07destruction, yeah. Is that right?
- 1:29:13Tie me why? Me.
- 1:29:14Look, I'm not Matthew Jacobs asking.
- 1:29:16Yeah, No. Do you know?
- 1:29:17What did you watch that Doctor Who?
- 1:29:19Am I? You see those fucking American
- 1:29:23fans? Patronising the hell out of him.
- 1:29:25On that side of those guys, they should be ashamed of themselves,
- 1:29:28though. That was shameful.
- 1:29:29To watch that. And then I loved it though when
- 1:29:32he went into the actual. Convention and they put.
- 1:29:34Up gunfires so he could see his dad on the on the screen.
- 1:29:38But yeah, those American fans were just cunts to him.
- 1:29:42But then that was kind of the story you wanted to tell.
- 1:29:44I'm sure he had lots of. Interviews with nice fans that
- 1:29:47he decided not to Nan the magic regeneration dust comes and
- 1:29:51brings everybody back to life. People hated this at the time.
- 1:29:53Regenergy all the fucking time now doesn't it?
- 1:29:56Yeah. So do we blame Matthew Jacobs
- 1:29:59for it? Happening once.
- 1:30:00Or R2D for it happening multiple times.
- 1:30:02I don't blame anybody. I think Doctor Who in general is
- 1:30:05quite a. Positive show and you can't have
- 1:30:07people like these dying all the time.
- 1:30:10Don't you give me those, Moffett.
- 1:30:12Excuses about not killing off. Companions.
- 1:30:15I don't know. I'm not sure I'm.
- 1:30:17I don't fucking. I'd kill off any of the most
- 1:30:19recent companions. I was about to say something so.
- 1:30:23Inappropriate. I'm glad I.
- 1:30:25Kept it in my mouth. That's what she said before,
- 1:30:29yeah. So.
- 1:30:31I. Feel.
- 1:30:32I feel like we've. We've kind of.
- 1:30:34Earned Daphne Ashbrook as a companion, but as a viewer at
- 1:30:38this point, I'm thinking Chan Lee's.
- 1:30:40Chen Lee's story's done. I don't need him to be an
- 1:30:43ongoing companion. No, I yeah, I agree.
- 1:30:47Oh, we don't really. Know much about him apart?
- 1:30:49From me filling with a bad lot, Yeah.
- 1:30:51No, I think, I think he'd be a bit of a like.
- 1:30:54Adric or a Turlo. Not in the sense that he's a
- 1:30:56cunt, but in the sense that you get into all sorts of mischief
- 1:31:00wherever they went. He could be the The Artful
- 1:31:02Dodger in Space character. That ADRIC was supposed to be,
- 1:31:05but genuinely streetwise as well, yeah.
- 1:31:08So quite not afraid to like get into a bit of a.
- 1:31:11Scrape. Yeah, and I would really want if
- 1:31:14they were going on. I would want.
- 1:31:16This to be a will they won't they romance which were the
- 1:31:20height of popularity in the 90s Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:31:23Yeah. And when they finally do?
- 1:31:25Fuck, we're about right. Cancel the show.
- 1:31:27This whenever they get together is terrible.
- 1:31:31Well, what could happen is he could buy.
- 1:31:33Generate and. The 8th Doctor's weird split off
- 1:31:37version could go live with them. Although I will say.
- 1:31:41That like the end. Of Last of the Time Lords when
- 1:31:44Martha makes this choice, Grace deciding to no, I don't need to
- 1:31:49be with you to live my best life because I'm amazing.
- 1:31:53You come and live my life. I mean, to be fair all the time
- 1:31:56in space or working in a hospital, but I think that's a
- 1:31:59great message. You know it's I'm my own person.
- 1:32:02I don't need this. She she's a doctor.
- 1:32:06She saves lives. There's nothing more important.
- 1:32:09He's a doctor. He saves lives.
- 1:32:11There's nothing more important. They're both right, Tingles.
- 1:32:14Look at this ambassion. Yeah.
- 1:32:16Yeah. That's the kind of real.
- 1:32:18Ownership moment. He's like, yeah, I am the
- 1:32:20fucking doctor. You can argue about me are like
- 1:32:24what the hell is that all? About who knows, It turns out
- 1:32:27this this spaceship's a bit shit.
- 1:32:30Do you notice no matter how many times they do that shot?
- 1:32:33Of the man doing the power blower in the fat guy's face.
- 1:32:36He still missed times throwing the food no matter how many
- 1:32:39times they do it. So the guy in the sheet is
- 1:32:43cosplaying. Sylvester McCoy, right?
- 1:32:46Obviously, yeah. Can anyone remember where they
- 1:32:51were at the actual? Millennium.
- 1:32:54Yes. I was at my friend Christopher
- 1:32:56Wagstaff's house party. OK.
- 1:32:58I was in Gdansk at a. Party in a villa with a bunch of
- 1:33:03Polish people? That sounds better than being in
- 1:33:06a house party. In Halesowen, just outside of
- 1:33:09Birmingham, I was at a nightclub in France.
- 1:33:14In the very quaint town of Alby in a swimming pool, 2000.
- 1:33:21It was a great club. It was a great night.
- 1:33:26Yeah, all the clubs. Everywhere but England are the
- 1:33:28best all. The English clubs are terrible,
- 1:33:33so here we are the. Doctor's got his paper bag back.
- 1:33:35So he's, you know, he's got his Sonic, probably some more Jelly
- 1:33:40dust. I don't.
- 1:33:41Think we'll be seeing Cyberman then?
- 1:33:42It's on. So yeah, that's never going to
- 1:33:44happen. They weren't called Cybermen,
- 1:33:46were there they? Were called cybes.
- 1:33:48In their version. Sipes.
- 1:33:52God. You know what?
- 1:33:53Look at their. Hair, it's so wet.
- 1:33:55Isn't. It they remember Ian, we're in
- 1:33:57Vancouver. Yeah.
- 1:33:58Yeah, yeah. Just saying Ian, if we'd have
- 1:34:04gone on to our series, we could have been in.
- 1:34:05Those woots, if we have a story, I'd love that.
- 1:34:09They could have. They could.
- 1:34:10Have accidentally met Malta and Pascali coming out of the
- 1:34:12bushes. It's perfect.
- 1:34:14Well, you remember that shitty old story.
- 1:34:16About classic Who, where they were both in the same quarry.
- 1:34:18Doctor Who and Blake 7. You could have the same story
- 1:34:21with Doctor Who and The X-Files. Yeah, the Sentient.
- 1:34:25Fungus Grace. It's.
- 1:34:27Being. Investigated by those FBI agents
- 1:34:29over there. Let's listen to it the TV.
- 1:34:32Movie. And X-Files was.
- 1:34:34Both fox so in they could have been on the same lot at the same
- 1:34:37time in theatre right yeah, let's say that happened and
- 1:34:41they. Met in the canteen, yeah.
- 1:34:44Oh my God. You know that thing in Coupling
- 1:34:47where you you have a fantasy about two really attractive
- 1:34:50celebrities getting it on and it's like, wow, So you see, you
- 1:34:55got McGann and you got Anderson. Wow.
- 1:34:59Imagine the children. Mcganderson.
- 1:35:02Mcganderson. Oh my.
- 1:35:04God, do any of you? Remember the end of the One
- 1:35:06Doctor audio play? So it's the comedy one that's
- 1:35:10quite early, Colin. And Bonnie.
- 1:35:12And Roberts and Hick Hickson, well they wanted to do a piss
- 1:35:16take of the TV movie at the end, so it ends with the Doctor
- 1:35:19snogging Sally Ann whilst fireworks are going off all
- 1:35:24around them. It's incredible.
- 1:35:26Perfect. I mean, I just think that scene
- 1:35:27is. Just.
- 1:35:28Blissful. The way it's shot, the way it's
- 1:35:30acted, the way it's written. That's beautiful.
- 1:35:33And it does leave you alone in. For more it.
- 1:35:36Does. Oh, he's off he goes.
- 1:35:39Off a vertical take off. He's flying.
- 1:35:41On what is? It Samson and Samson.
- 1:35:44And. Gemma, Yeah, or Sam?
- 1:35:47Jones, if you there we was thinking that.
- 1:35:49He was going off to meet Charlie Pollard until.
- 1:35:51We listened to Terra Foma. You think he's seconds away from
- 1:35:55meeting a Vortis? Or, but no, you thought only
- 1:36:00Moffett could jam. An ear her in out of.
- 1:36:01Nowhere but Joe Lister got there first.
- 1:36:04Yeah, but whatever happened to? Gemma.
- 1:36:08Gemma is. Oh yeah, they died.
- 1:36:11Horribly, that's the wilderness she is for you.
- 1:36:15Yep, and now he's thinking I'm. Just going to have nine years
- 1:36:18reading this book. Before I regenerate again, is he
- 1:36:21trying to read Millennium rights like I am?
- 1:36:23I think that's going to take me. Nine years.
- 1:36:26I literally could. Spend the rest of my life in
- 1:36:29that tallest. Console room quite happily.
- 1:36:32What a wonderful bit of Docky. Who?
- 1:36:35I mean, it's sort of it's like a mad back alley.
- 1:36:38Now. Isn't it but just a heavenly 1?
- 1:36:41Now, obviously this airs and it doesn't go.
- 1:36:44To series, but it doesn't not. Go to series straight away for
- 1:36:47about a year. Universal extend their rights by
- 1:36:51their option for another six months.
- 1:36:53So there is a possibility it's going to carry on and they're
- 1:36:56looking at various ways to happen.
- 1:36:59What about ways for it to happen?
- 1:37:00It doesn't. And at one point, even up to
- 1:37:021998, Philip Siegel's looking at the possibility of using the
- 1:37:06rights for the Peter Cushing movies to remake them.
- 1:37:10Wow, as as said in the. Paul Hayes's.
- 1:37:14Brilliant book. The long game.
- 1:37:16There are so many maybes in this.
- 1:37:19Era aren't there of what it could have been.
- 1:37:21That's why honestly, that's why you've got such a good podcast
- 1:37:24like you're too kind. I don't know why.
- 1:37:27Why? IPlayer is very.
- 1:37:28Eccentric. It's taken.
- 1:37:29Me from the end of the TV movie and skipped straight to the
- 1:37:32middle of the animated Abominable Snowman episode 1.
- 1:37:36Mine went into apparently a moment into a poetry.
- 1:37:39Very strange. I.
- 1:37:41Didn't hang around long enough to find.
- 1:37:43Out. Well, let's see.
- 1:37:46Indeed. We're all going to poach the
- 1:37:48same things now as we do our three fabulous things to
- 1:37:53recommend the TV movie. We could do 100 each.
- 1:37:55We've only got 3. We'll go Ian, Dylan, me, Ian.
- 1:38:00OK. First and foremost, primarily
- 1:38:02centre front. And centre Eric Roberts, this is
- 1:38:05his finest hour as a as a performer, as an actor.
- 1:38:11He looks amazing. He embraces the character, he
- 1:38:14embraces the atmosphere of the thing.
- 1:38:16He could have been a difficult Hollywood prick and dragged the
- 1:38:20production down, but he really leapt into it with both feet.
- 1:38:24And I think he's one of the the one of the many very best things
- 1:38:29in it. Secondly, I would have John
- 1:38:32Debney. I think it was hang on, hang on.
- 1:38:35It's Dylan. 'S turn.
- 1:38:36Oh, I'm sorry, I've forgotten the format.
- 1:38:38Yeah, it was a bit of a while you.
- 1:38:39Know I would like. To shout out.
- 1:38:42Yiji Yiji so AKA Changley because he doesn't get enough
- 1:38:47props, but I think he's a like, he's a good companion for the
- 1:38:52master to have and like. The interplay between them is
- 1:38:55fun and I think he would have made an interesting addition to
- 1:38:59an ongoing series. I want to shout out John
- 1:39:03Debney's. Score for this because I think,
- 1:39:06I think he just manages to touch practically every genre he does.
- 1:39:09A bit of horror, a bit of suspense, a bit of hospital
- 1:39:13drama, a bit of sitcom, a bit of comedy, a bit of action
- 1:39:18adventure. It's all in there, but it is
- 1:39:22some of the most beautiful. I do listen to this score quite
- 1:39:25a lot. And that chase, Dun, Dun, Dun.
- 1:39:30It's just so propulsive. Yeah.
- 1:39:32Fantastic score Ian so rapidly. Changing.
- 1:39:37My second choice, I would shine a light on director Geoffrey
- 1:39:43Sachs, who, you know, has been doing sitcom for a while.
- 1:39:47He's made, you know, sort of news and current affairs stuff,
- 1:39:53but my God, he can do drama and he can do pacing and he can
- 1:39:57carry you along even though what you're watching doesn't
- 1:40:00necessarily add up to a very tall hill of beans.
- 1:40:04It's a really fun time watching it, as I think we've we've all
- 1:40:08just demonstrated, and that's largely down to Mr. Jeff.
- 1:40:14On a similar note, I want to shout out.
- 1:40:17Patrick Lucier who was the editor who does a great amount
- 1:40:22with the footage is given and I'm sure he worked very closely
- 1:40:25with Jeffrey Sachs. But they really, like, make the
- 1:40:29best of their coverage and make for an interesting, fast-paced,
- 1:40:32exciting Doctor Who story. And I, we don't talk about the
- 1:40:37editors enough. And I think this is the first
- 1:40:39time you can really talk about the editors properly.
- 1:40:41And Doctor Who of like that, that editor helped shape the
- 1:40:45pace and the feel and the tone of this film.
- 1:40:47He salvages the climax, doesn't he?
- 1:40:50Because it doesn't make. Any sense?
- 1:40:51And yet you're just so swept away with what's going on.
- 1:40:54You're just like, who cares? It's like, it's great stuff.
- 1:40:57Well, neither one of you have gone for it yet, so I am
- 1:41:00definitely going for R Daphne primarily for the reason that I
- 1:41:06utilized her on cameo both to tell Mark I loved him the first
- 1:41:10time and secondly asked him to marry me.
- 1:41:14Daphne Ashbrook did both of those tasks for me, and they
- 1:41:18both worked out rather well. I'm really pleased.
- 1:41:20Good old Daphne. But also, it is a funny,
- 1:41:24charismatic, genuinely endearing turn.
- 1:41:27She's great from her first scene to her last.
- 1:41:29We've all been wanting more for the last 30 fucking years, and
- 1:41:33we've gone through bloody persuasion in the next life and
- 1:41:36what other bullshit Big Finish are bringing out next month just
- 1:41:39to spend a bit more time with Daphne.
- 1:41:42She's great. She's absolutely wonderful.
- 1:41:44Yeah, one of the best one shot companions we ever had.
- 1:41:48Absolutely. Oh, it's you again, Ian.
- 1:41:52Oh, is it? Oh, sorry, you have to cut that.
- 1:41:54Awkward pause. Out he won't well I would like
- 1:41:59and I I don't know who's in charge of it if I'd done more
- 1:42:02homework and research I'd be better placed to do this but I
- 1:42:05think the the VFX for the time for what we'd been used to in
- 1:42:10the 80s Doctor Who this was visually such a quantum leap
- 1:42:15away from it's it's NW imaging and.
- 1:42:20Effects NW imaging and effects we salute.
- 1:42:24You indeed and. Philip Siegel.
- 1:42:28For trying and trying and trying and getting the thing made.
- 1:42:32And, you know, maybe him getting this made may have hindered
- 1:42:35other versions of the show from getting off the ground in the
- 1:42:3890s, but this gave us Paul McGann, and I don't think I'd
- 1:42:41want to change that. I wouldn't no Philip Seagull.
- 1:42:45Is directly responsible for giving me.
- 1:42:48The 8th Doctor books all right, so I can't possibly criticize
- 1:42:52him. My last thing is going to go to
- 1:42:54you're all going to think I'm mad.
- 1:42:55It's all those subsidiary side comic characters that we meet
- 1:42:59throughout this. Curtis, the Mortuary guy, the
- 1:43:02fella hoovering and that's a little note for him.
- 1:43:04You know, Professor Wag, the scientists, the chickens, the
- 1:43:09sign of the policeman, you know, the crowd that didn't get their
- 1:43:13line. Give him the gun.
- 1:43:15I think if you can feel a story that is kind of got a naff plot
- 1:43:21with lots of really funny moments and they've got it.
- 1:43:24They've absolutely got it here, and all of them, none of them
- 1:43:28have, you know, like characters I'd want to see much more of.
- 1:43:31But for their function in this and the fact that they've all
- 1:43:35made me laugh means that the tension at the end of the story
- 1:43:38where they're all being torn apart actually impacts comedy
- 1:43:43side characters. Thumbs up.
- 1:43:44World building. All over, isn't it?
- 1:43:47It's just. Just makes it a more exciting,
- 1:43:49more believable world. Well chaps, thank you very much
- 1:43:53for. This trip to San Francisco.
- 1:43:56But dare I ask you all? What on earth?
- 1:43:58Where are we going next? Do we even know?
- 1:44:00Am I just going to make this up now?
- 1:44:02We don't know, do we? Haven't got a clue.
- 1:44:06Could be anywhere. Into dinner I'll tell you what,
- 1:44:10let's just. Assume we're.
- 1:44:11Going to have a freeway. Again.
- 1:44:12In the future, with our book that's read by all three of us,
- 1:44:16yes. And we will reconvene for
- 1:44:21another. It's got.
- 1:44:21To be another biggie though, like Day of the Doctor, the TV
- 1:44:24movie. What?
- 1:44:24Why don't we figure out a book to read and then what we can?
- 1:44:27Tie in for a commentary. Oh, you know, I've just fought.
- 1:44:31Well, that's something like the good.
- 1:44:32Doctor and Power of the Doctor. That's the next biggie, right?
- 1:44:36Yes, let's do it. I love Power of The.
- 1:44:39Doctor. But what 13th Doctor material
- 1:44:41was there for your podcast? Oh, there's a.
- 1:44:44There's a a. Lady called Jenny Hauser who
- 1:44:48writes some comics. Jodie Jodie Hauser.
- 1:44:52We will. Have Doogie Hauser.
- 1:44:54Doogie Hauser's doctor. There's loads.
- 1:44:56Of 13th Doctor. Audios now we're fucking, of
- 1:44:59course, and they are so. Good.
- 1:45:01Let me just. Say Fabulous as podcasting's
- 1:45:04biggest. Big Finish.
- 1:45:06Agnostic, they are amazing. Excellent.
- 1:45:10Thank you very much for your time.
- 1:45:12It has been a. Pleasure.
- 1:45:14It's been a hoot. It's been lovely to see you.
- 1:45:17Again, Hi, Mark, it's Daphne. Again, Joe wanted me to send you
- 1:45:30a very, very, very, very Merry Christmas.
- 1:45:33I hope your Christmas was fabulous.
- 1:45:36Mine was wonderful. As you can see, we actually had
- 1:45:39a white Christmas up here, so it was beautiful and I hope yours
- 1:45:44was as well. And so Merry Christmas from Joe.
- 1:45:49And there's one last little thing I almost forgot this
- 1:45:53little message. Joe loves you so much and your
- 1:46:00wonderful. Little life, would you do him
- 1:46:03the great honor of being his husband?
- 1:46:07Because he can't imagine his life without you?
- 1:46:12And now I'm going to cry. So congratulations.
- 1:46:17I love you guys, happy. Christmas and have a wonderful
- 1:46:22little life together and I'm so honored.
- 1:46:25Thank you so much. I love you guys.
- 1:46:28Merry Christmas. Congrats.
