- 0:01Speaker 1: Okay, this is a little weird because.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Uh, you know, when, when, when we have Roger Wallace
- 0:18Speaker 3: join the program, the producer, Jake Herman, uh, bumps back
- 0:22Speaker 3: with a, uh, Jimmy Buffett song, uh, Roger, the, uh,
- 0:26Speaker 3: biggest parrot head we know. And, and yet, uh, and
- 0:30Speaker 3: normally it's one that's suggested we talk about whatever. And
- 0:33Speaker 3: I had not. And I, and I, I said to Jake,
- 0:36Speaker 3: do we have a song ready?
- 0:37Speaker 4: He said, yeah.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Do you want something else to know? I had no
- 0:39Speaker 3: idea what he was going to play. The song I
- 0:41Speaker 3: was going to suggest was Finn's.
- 0:42Speaker 4: All right. It's amazing.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And so I lean into Roger to give us, is there,
- 0:48Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, Buffett's stuff is very tropical, but was
- 0:53Speaker 3: there any specific meaning other than a girl going down
- 0:55Speaker 3: to the Caribbean and being accosted by dudes in a
- 0:59Speaker 3: bar and stuff like that?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, I'm glad you asked because the fifth word in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the song is Cincinnati, and that kind.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Of goes to my.
- 1:12Speaker 2: my fandom with Buffett and that kind of became his
- 1:16Speaker 2: northern Parrothead headquarters, if you will, way back in the
- 1:20Speaker 2: late 70s when He was mostly a southern guy in
- 1:25Speaker 2: Florida and Key West and all that. And then he,
- 1:28Speaker 2: for one reason or another, Cincinnati kind of became a
- 1:31Speaker 2: huge Buffett hub. And so much so that he made
- 1:36Speaker 2: a point of playing every year. That's a concert in
- 1:40Speaker 2: Cincinnati is where one of his band members came up
- 1:44Speaker 2: with the term Parrothead when they were looking at the crowd.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And so- Yeah, that holds some significance beyond the fact that,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, Landsharks, and they came up with a beer
- 1:56Speaker 2: name because of the Landshark, which is, you know, essentially
- 1:59Speaker 2: what Fins is about, dudes, or Landsharks.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Yeah. It's the one that went down to Cincinnati, et cetera.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it.
- 2:08Speaker 3: See, I was hoping there was a story behind it,
- 2:10Speaker 3: and there's probably not a story behind every Jimmy Buffett song,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but about some of them.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's one of his more popular tunes, so it makes sense.
- 2:16Speaker 1: It makes sense.
- 2:17Speaker 2: That's one of those ones, Craig, where he always says,
- 2:20Speaker 2: or used to say, obviously, that there's some you just
- 2:23Speaker 2: have to play. And he doesn't play it for himself.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He plays it for his fans. And, you know, Fins
- 2:28Speaker 2: is one of those anthems. And if you've ever been
- 2:30Speaker 2: to a Buffett concert, it's quite a scene when they
- 2:33Speaker 2: put the Fins up and start swaying from the left
- 2:35Speaker 2: to the right. It's a pretty cool scene on a
- 2:38Speaker 2: lot of those anthems.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Outdoor venues up on the lawn.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Yeah witnessed it myself there at that that that that
- 2:45Speaker 3: amphitheater by the cotton bowl i did that one one
- 2:48Speaker 3: uh one time the the swaying back and forth and
- 2:51Speaker 3: and uh and that sort of thing it kind of
- 2:54Speaker 3: it kind of makes and it's funny he has that
- 2:56Speaker 3: line that that in the song manana that that that
- 3:00Speaker 3: uh that jake played last week says don't try to
- 3:03Speaker 3: describe a kiss concert if you've never seen one don't
- 3:06Speaker 3: try to describe a buffett concert if you've never seen
- 3:09Speaker 3: one right.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I mean, the parking lot, it's tailgating, it's tropical, it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: Hawaiian shirts. Towards the end of his career, he would
- 3:24Speaker 2: thank the parents for introducing their children. introducing their you
- 3:28Speaker 2: know because the the demographic got pretty old but but
- 3:31Speaker 2: yeah it's it's kind of it's kind of what you
- 3:33Speaker 2: would uh you know escape to uh to margaritaville is
- 3:37Speaker 2: uh you know a real thing and his fans and
- 3:40Speaker 2: that's what a concert's kind of like no doubt about
- 3:43Speaker 2: it i don't live the funny part the ironic part
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know it i don't live the buffett lifestyle right
- 3:48Speaker 2: i just like the music and i like the tropical
- 3:51Speaker 2: vibe and the beach vibe and the palm trees and
- 3:53Speaker 2: all that yeah.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah you're not not not exactly the the Put it
- 3:58Speaker 3: this way.
- 3:58Speaker 1: If I were to see you.
- 3:59Speaker 3: At a Buffett concert back in the day, would you
- 4:01Speaker 3: have dressed like the other Parrotheads?
- 4:03Speaker 2: I would not, and I would not have a frozen
- 4:06Speaker 2: concoction drink and all that stuff.
- 4:10Speaker 4: But I would know every song. Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Absolutely. No doubt about it.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Let me jump right in because you were down there
- 4:17Speaker 3: on campus there because you have a weekly conversation with
- 4:21Speaker 3: Sark for the game day show that you guys have
- 4:24Speaker 3: on KBVO. And, you know, Sark had mentioned something to
- 4:30Speaker 3: me before we recorded Longhorn Weekly last night. and John
- 4:34Speaker 3: Bianco was talking about, they were going to, I think,
- 4:37Speaker 3: go ahead and address all of this business straight on.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And in addition to that, the Johnny Nansen news that
- 4:43Speaker 3: came down as well. So I take it you weren't
- 4:44Speaker 3: necessarily surprised by Sark going head-on with stuff to talk about,
- 4:49Speaker 3: the ESPN attempted interview things, the snafu with that, Arch
- 4:53Speaker 3: Manning's situation, and then the Johnny Nansen news on top
- 4:57Speaker 3: of it.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I kind of summed it up with it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: They got a lot going on down there and it
- 5:02Speaker 2: has nothing to do with the football game. So in
- 5:04Speaker 2: that regard, you know, you're 48 hours out. And yes,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and I think, you know, in some ways he owed
- 5:11Speaker 2: it to Arch to kind of explain the chain reaction
- 5:14Speaker 2: of events that happened that led up to what everyone's
- 5:20Speaker 2: been talking about the last couple of days. So not
- 5:22Speaker 2: surprised at all. I think he felt he owed it
- 5:24Speaker 2: to Arch. He also wanted to let people know he
- 5:26Speaker 2: understands everything as well as Arch does, that he made
- 5:29Speaker 2: a mistake in his choice of comments and all that. And,
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, our conversation is for our Texas game day,
- 5:36Speaker 2: which airs an hour before the game. So obviously we've
- 5:39Speaker 2: moved on. He talked about the things that they need
- 5:41Speaker 2: to work on, but that's part of it, don't you think?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Is it just getting... That focus, because there's a lot
- 5:48Speaker 2: of stuff flying around here. And oh, by the way,
- 5:51Speaker 2: the number one team in the country.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, all of that stuff heaped in and coming off
- 5:56Speaker 3: of that gigantic win. I mean, it would not surprise me.
- 6:01Speaker 3: If whoever, the ESPN guys or the Fox guys, whoever,
- 6:06Speaker 3: all say, hey, Texas better be on upset alert because
- 6:10Speaker 3: they've got all these distractions swirling around and they're coming
- 6:13Speaker 3: off that mountaintop experience and getting ready for a hungry
- 6:16Speaker 3: UTSA team. But that said, the vibe I got from
- 6:20Speaker 3: Sark last night, I think what you got as well
- 6:22Speaker 3: is they're circling the wagons. They're locking in on this
- 6:26Speaker 3: game no matter who the opponent was going to be,
- 6:29Speaker 3: regardless of that outside stuff.
- 6:31Speaker 4: No question.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And if you've ever been to practice, which I know
- 6:35Speaker 2: a lot of people don't obviously get that opportunity, practice
- 6:38Speaker 2: looks pretty much the same every day.
- 6:40Speaker 4: And that's because they have to do the work.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And so the other stuff, maybe it seeps into outside
- 6:48Speaker 2: of practice and their day-to-day lives a little bit, but
- 6:52Speaker 2: the practice... It's so regimented and it's so structured that
- 6:56Speaker 2: there's no time for.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Your mind to wander about all that or you're.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Going to get called out so fast. And so I
- 7:02Speaker 2: don't think getting their focus in practice, I think no
- 7:05Speaker 2: matter what with a win like that against Ohio State,
- 7:08Speaker 2: it's only natural that their biggest concern is to get
- 7:11Speaker 2: his team off an emotional high, especially Saturday at 7
- 7:15Speaker 2: o'clock when it's time to play.
- 7:18Speaker 1: No question about it. Roger Wallace with us for a
- 7:19Speaker 1: couple more minutes.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Okay, let's jump to the weekend, starting with your game tonight.
- 7:25Speaker 1: This is kind of a unique thing, isn't it?
- 7:28Speaker 3: I sometimes refer to brand-new high school football athletic programs
- 7:32Speaker 3: as expansion teams.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Because of what they have to deal with and start out.
- 7:36Speaker 3: And in the case of Legacy Branch, it really kind
- 7:38Speaker 3: of is not having that senior class and getting ready
- 7:41Speaker 3: to take on Pflugerville, and that's the one you and
- 7:43Speaker 3: Keith Moreland have tonight.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Legacy Ranch and Pflugerville at the field. And, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 2: we were out there on their very first day of
- 7:51Speaker 2: practice in August.
- 7:52Speaker 4: And, I mean, it's a beautiful facility. The high school.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And Tim Kinnicky, the head coach, said, man, I got
- 7:58Speaker 2: to see, I got to watch that thing being built.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And it was quite a process for a first-time head coach.
- 8:05Speaker 2: But then, you know, I joked with him, what do
- 8:06Speaker 2: you do when you get that job and you're building
- 8:08Speaker 2: a program?
- 8:08Speaker 4: And he kind of laughed.
- 8:09Speaker 2: He goes, yeah, that's interesting because you got to do everything.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And you probably, for everything you do, you probably forgot
- 8:15Speaker 2: three things you need to do, but they come out
- 8:18Speaker 2: of that Liberty Hill district and we know the history
- 8:21Speaker 2: and the tradition. So they're gonna get some players just
- 8:24Speaker 2: by nature of that system out there and those kids
- 8:28Speaker 2: hungry to play football now. you know, they know they're
- 8:30Speaker 2: going to take some lumps and they have the last
- 8:32Speaker 2: couple of weeks, but they won their first game. And
- 8:34Speaker 2: like you said, they're all coming back. He said, he goes,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I know I've got everybody coming back, assuming they don't
- 8:40Speaker 2: leave and got a freshman center, for instance.
- 8:43Speaker 4: So obviously you point to the future.
- 8:45Speaker 2: And you see, you know, how, how can we do
- 8:47Speaker 2: this year is a first year varsity program.
- 8:50Speaker 3: That is a tonight at the field and you can
- 8:52Speaker 3: watch it on KBVO at seven o'clock tonight, Pflugerville against
- 8:54Speaker 3: legacy wrench and then the game i'm stepping in for
- 8:56Speaker 3: you tomorrow night because you'll be.
- 8:58Speaker 2: On campus can i turn the tables on you uh
- 9:00Speaker 2: yeah absolutely since you've got the game tomorrow night on
- 9:04Speaker 2: kxam plus uh and this is a you know this
- 9:07Speaker 2: is a game that used to be for a district
- 9:09Speaker 2: title or a piece of the district title or trying
- 9:11Speaker 2: to upset the apple cart this is this is a
- 9:13Speaker 2: pretty cool non-district game over at monroe stadium tomorrow you
- 9:16Speaker 2: and keith will be doing.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah exactly vander griffin round rock and you're in your
- 9:19Speaker 3: spot on with it and you know the coaches as
- 9:22Speaker 3: well as i do and uh You know, I was
- 9:24Speaker 3: impressed with both of the coaches and what they had
- 9:28Speaker 3: to say about this. Basically, that you're talking about two
- 9:33Speaker 3: schools who are used to playing each other for eight
- 9:37Speaker 3: consecutive years. It's been nine years since they weren't in
- 9:41Speaker 3: the same district. So it's eight consecutive years. that Round
- 9:47Speaker 3: Rock and Vandegrift met as district opponents. So in eight
- 9:53Speaker 3: consecutive years, they got used to playing each other. And
- 9:56Speaker 3: of course, Cody Moore's in his fourth season overall, but still,
- 10:00Speaker 3: and Drew Sanders is the only coach Vandergriff has ever had.
- 10:04Speaker 1: We know that as well.
- 10:05Speaker 3: But they both were in unanimity about this was too
- 10:09Speaker 3: good a game to not play, continue to play, even
- 10:13Speaker 3: though they're no longer in the same district. If for
- 10:16Speaker 3: no other reason, Roger, as you know, the 6A districts
- 10:19Speaker 3: in this area are all 17 districts. They had to
- 10:22Speaker 3: add that fourth non-district game. He said, why not jump
- 10:26Speaker 3: right into that? And with Round Rock, it's so weird
- 10:30Speaker 3: to think about this, Roger, that the Round Rock schools
- 10:32Speaker 3: are not in with the Leander schools, but they're in
- 10:35Speaker 3: with Westlake and Lake Travis. And that's what's going to
- 10:38Speaker 3: be really interesting to follow on down the line.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, you know, it's funny when you think about,
- 10:45Speaker 2: you know, Kelly Reeves and.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Gupton are, you know, right up the road from each other.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And I joked last week when we were at Kelly
- 10:51Speaker 2: Reeves that, you know, Cedar Ridge and Vista Ridge, and
- 10:55Speaker 2: Vista Ridge is way closer to that stadium than Cedar
- 10:57Speaker 2: Ridge is as far as their campuses are. So, yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 2: but what, you know, you say it's, I say it's
- 11:04Speaker 2: a great game. You say it's a great game. I'm
- 11:06Speaker 2: sure both coaches are going, okay, we're We're at week
- 11:09Speaker 2: four now and still we're in non-district. So this is
- 11:11Speaker 2: a great matchup, but these are also two really physical teams. And,
- 11:14Speaker 2: you know, that's a month of pounding now before they
- 11:17Speaker 2: get ready for the, for the most important part.
- 11:19Speaker 4: So it's kind of a.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Catch 22 where you get a great opponent, you get
- 11:22Speaker 2: a great gauge, but you don't want to get, get
- 11:25Speaker 2: beat up too.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Badly here a month into the season before that, that run.
- 11:28Speaker 4: But yeah, it should be fun. And no, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 4: Westlake's off tomorrow.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So, you know, on KXAM plus that's the, that's the
- 11:34Speaker 2: marquee marquee game, obviously tomorrow.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Well, and it'll be a big crowd there, and they
- 11:39Speaker 3: both have good offensive lines. And you saw Vandegrift a
- 11:41Speaker 3: week ago, and we've seen what Round Rock did. That
- 11:43Speaker 3: was an impressive win. They got over Dripping Springs. Both
- 11:46Speaker 3: teams 2-1 going into that. And I am kind of
- 11:50Speaker 3: curious to see both of these quarterbacks in action as well.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Dove Strickler for Round Rock is kind of almost their
- 11:59Speaker 3: Swiss Army knife.
- 12:00Speaker 1: He does so much.
- 12:03Speaker 3: For Coach Moore, and then you saw Gavin Custer a
- 12:06Speaker 3: week ago and what he can do for Vandergrift.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to think that Vandegrift took a big
- 12:12Speaker 2: step last week at Liberty Hill, the way they just
- 12:16Speaker 2: kind of jumped on Liberty Hill. Big ball game, obviously,
- 12:19Speaker 2: for Liberty Hill to host a 6A team, not only
- 12:22Speaker 2: a 6A team, but.
- 12:23Speaker 4: One with the name of a Vandegrift.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And they were on the wrong end of a pretty
- 12:29Speaker 2: decisive win by Vandegrift, and Custer seemed to kind of
- 12:33Speaker 2: find himself a little bit.
- 12:34Speaker 4: After what happened a couple of weeks ago.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So Yeah, it should be interesting, and then we'll be
- 12:41Speaker 2: talking almost exclusively about district games. I look at that
- 12:46Speaker 2: 12-5A district, and the fact that they're going to be
- 12:48Speaker 2: two weeks into district play after this weekend, and then
- 12:52Speaker 2: a lot of schools don't open district until next week.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 12:57Speaker 3: You can catch Roger and Keith tonight with the call
- 12:59Speaker 3: on KBVO at 7 o'clock, Pflugerville against Legacy Ranch, and
- 13:03Speaker 3: then Keith will join me tomorrow on KXM +. for
- 13:06Speaker 3: Round Rock and Vandegrift. Rog, thanks for the time. Have
- 13:08Speaker 3: a good call tonight. We'll see you this weekend.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Thanks, Craig.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Thanks for stepping in tomorrow, too.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You betcha.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Take care. All right, that's Roger Wallace. We'll be back
- 13:15Speaker 3: with more on 13 Under the Zone.
