- 0:22Welcome to the Mixing Garden Hair Podcast.
- 0:24I am Jess here with licensed Cosmetologist,
- 0:26Delina Markland. Delina, I smooth my flyaways down,
- 0:30and within a couple hours, they are sticking up again
- 0:32or flaking white. What is going on?
- 0:34That flaking is your product, not you.
- 0:36And it is exactly why I reach for the hair finishing stick
- 0:39instead. Most flyaway gels and edge controls are alcohol set.
- 0:43They dry into a hard shell that looks smooth at first,
- 0:46then goes brittle and flakes white,
- 0:50the second you move or sweat.
- 0:52The finishing stick is a water-based alcohol-free gel,
- 0:55so it lays flyaways and edges with a flexible hold that does not crack.
- 0:59No white residue at noon.
- 1:01Why does alcohol-free matter so much for flyaways and baby hairs specifically?
- 1:05Flyaways and baby hairs are the finest, most fragile hair you have.
- 1:08Drying alcohol pulls moisture out of them as it evaporates,
- 1:11so by midday those hairs are dry, brittle, and breaking,
- 1:14and the gel is flaking on top.
- 1:16Alcohol-free means the hold comes from flexible polymers and conditioning
- 1:19ingredients instead, so the surface stays smooth and the hairs stay healthy.
- 1:23You are styling them, not sacrificing them.
- 1:26What is your actual technique?
- 1:28Crown flyaways versus edges.
- 1:30For flyaways across the top, you barely touch it.
- 1:32One light pass of the wand over the surface in the direction the hair falls,
- 1:36then smooth with your palm.
- 1:37For edges, work in small sections, not the whole hairline at once.
- 1:41Use the wand tip right on the baby hairs,
- 1:43lay them in one inch sections,
- 1:45and do three light passes.
- 1:46First lays the hair, second adds hold, third polishes,
- 1:50then set with a fine metal tooth comb.
- 1:52That tension is what keeps them flat.
- 1:54The temple and nape move the most all day, so give those an extra pass.
- 1:58And if something lifts later,
- 1:59a thin touch-up of the same stick right on the spot that lifted
- 2:03smoothed with your fingertip.
- 2:04Because it is alcohol-free, it does not build up or flake
- 2:07on re-application the way gel does.
- 2:09That is the whole reason I use it.
- 2:10You can refresh a flyaway or a baby hair without starting over or going crunchy.
- 2:15Smooth flyaways, crisp edges, no flake, no breakage.
- 2:19The hair finishing stick is at thepixigarden.com.
