- 0:00Welcome to Pimoja Ministry, and welcome to our
- 0:02new season focused on God's highest purpose for
- 0:05your life. There are seasons in life when all
- 0:10you want is for God to intervene. You have prayed.
- 0:14You have fasted. You have waited. You have asked
- 0:18God to move what you cannot move, change what
- 0:21you cannot change, open what you cannot open,
- 0:24and remove what you cannot remove. And sometimes,
- 0:28God does exactly that. He opens the door. He
- 0:31moves the opposition. He changes the circumstances.
- 0:35He reverses the battle. He makes a way where
- 0:38there appeared to be no way. We have spent time
- 0:42exploring this mystery of divine intervention.
- 0:45Those moments when human ability reaches its
- 0:48limit and God steps into circumstances in ways
- 0:51only he can. But today, I want us to go deeper.
- 0:57Because there is another dimension of divine
- 0:59intervention that we do not always recognize
- 1:03while we are experiencing it What if God's intervention
- 1:06was not only about what was happening around
- 1:09you? What if all along God's intervention was
- 1:13also about what was happening inside you? What
- 1:15if you were asking God to change the situation
- 1:18while God was using the situation to change you?
- 1:21What if you were asking God to remove the fire?
- 1:24while God was using the fire to remove something
- 1:27from you. What if you were asking God to protect
- 1:30the vision while God understood that before he
- 1:33could entrust you with the fullness of that vision,
- 1:36he needed to refine the person carrying it? That
- 1:39is where this new journey begins. Refined for
- 1:43a purpose. First, Peter chapter one speaks about
- 1:49trials and compares the testing of our faith
- 1:51to gold being refined by fire. Think about that
- 1:54picture. Gold is valuable before it enters the
- 1:57fire. The fire does not create the value of the
- 2:00gold. The fire reveals it. The fire separates
- 2:03what belongs from what does not belong. The goldsmith
- 2:06does not place gold into the furnace because
- 2:09he hates it. He places it there because he knows
- 2:12what it can become when the impurities are removed.
- 2:15And perhaps this is where many of us misunderstand
- 2:18certain seasons with God. We interpret every
- 2:21fire primarily through the question, How do I
- 2:24get out of this? God may be asking, what needs
- 2:27to come out of you while you are in this? Those
- 2:30are two very different questions. We are looking
- 2:33for an exit. God may be producing transformation.
- 2:37We are looking for relief. God may be developing
- 2:39character. We are looking for the enemy to move.
- 2:43God may be revealing something within us that
- 2:46cannot accompany us into the place He is taking
- 2:49us. And that means the greatest miracle of your
- 2:53valley. may not always be that the valley disappeared.
- 2:56The greatest miracle may be the person who eventually
- 3:00walked out of it. There are things about ourselves
- 3:06that prosperity may never reveal. Comfort can
- 3:10hide them. Success can cover them. Position can
- 3:14conceal them. Applause can make us ignore them.
- 3:17But pressure has a strange way of exposing what
- 3:20is inside us. You don't always know the depth
- 3:23of your impatience until God makes you wait.
- 3:26You don't always recognize your anger until someone
- 3:29continually provokes you. You don't always understand
- 3:32your dependence upon people's approval until
- 3:35people misunderstand you. You don't always recognize
- 3:38pride while everybody is celebrating you. You
- 3:41don't always recognize uncontrolled desire until
- 3:44something you desperately want is placed within
- 3:47reach and God says no. You don't always know
- 3:50whether you trust God until everything you were
- 3:53trusting begins disappearing. This is why Deuteronomy
- 3:56chapter 8 is so powerful. Moses tells Israel
- 3:59that God led them through the wilderness to humble
- 4:01them and test them to know what was in their
- 4:04heart. The wilderness revealed Israel, their
- 4:07complaints, their fears, their appetites, their
- 4:11unbelief, their impatience, their tendency to
- 4:14return mentally to Egypt whenever following God
- 4:17became uncomfortable. Egypt had physically released
- 4:21them, but parts of Egypt were still living inside
- 4:24them. And perhaps that was one of the purposes
- 4:27of the wilderness. God was not simply taking
- 4:30Israel out of Egypt. God was taking Egypt out
- 4:33of Israel. And maybe somebody listening to me
- 4:36right now is discovering the same thing. God
- 4:39delivered you from something physically, but
- 4:41now he is dealing with what that experience left
- 4:44inside you. The habits. The mentality. The insecurity.
- 4:48The anger. The fear. The appetite. The relationships.
- 4:52The patterns. The reactions. The compromises.
- 4:55Because geographical deliverance is not always
- 4:57internal deliverance. You can leave Egypt and
- 5:00still carry Egypt. You can leave the relationship
- 5:03and still carry its wounds. You can leave the
- 5:06environment and still carry its habits. You can
- 5:08leave the old season and still think like the
- 5:11person you were in the old season. and God loves
- 5:13you too much to allow yesterday's impurities
- 5:16to destroy tomorrow's assignment. This changes
- 5:20how we understand divine intervention. Sometimes
- 5:23God's intervention looks like deliverance, but
- 5:26sometimes it looks like disruption. Sometimes
- 5:29God intervenes by opening a door. Sometimes He
- 5:32intervenes by closing one. Sometimes He brings
- 5:36someone into your life. Sometimes his protection
- 5:39becomes visible when someone leaves. Sometimes
- 5:41he increases something. Sometimes he reduces
- 5:45it. Sometimes he gives you what you prayed for.
- 5:48And sometimes his mercy is revealed through what
- 5:51he refuses to give you. At the moment, you may
- 5:54call it disappointment. Later, you may call it
- 5:56protection. At the moment, you may call it rejection.
- 6:00Later, you may call it redirection. At the moment,
- 6:03you may call it loss. Years later, you may look
- 6:05back and realize, had God allowed me to continue
- 6:09in that direction, I don't know what I would
- 6:10have become. Because God sees consequences that
- 6:13we cannot see. He sees where a relationship is
- 6:16going. He sees where a habit is going. He sees
- 6:19where uncontrolled anger is going. He sees where
- 6:22pride is going. He sees where compromise is going.
- 6:25He sees where an appetite is going. He sees where
- 6:28one seemingly insignificant seed can eventually
- 6:31lead. And because God sees the harvest while
- 6:34we are still looking at the seed, sometimes his
- 6:37intervention feels painful. There is another
- 6:41dimension we need to understand. Sometimes God
- 6:44is protecting more than you, because your life
- 6:46is connected to other lives. Your decisions affect
- 6:49other people. If you are married, your decisions
- 6:52affect your spouse. If you have children, your
- 6:56decisions affect your children. If you lead people,
- 6:59your decisions affect those who trust your leadership.
- 7:02If God has given you a ministry, your decisions
- 7:04can affect people you have never even met. If
- 7:07God has given you a vision, your character can
- 7:10influence whether that vision becomes a blessing
- 7:12or eventually becomes a source of destruction.
- 7:15So perhaps some of God's correction has been
- 7:17bigger than you. Perhaps some of his restraint
- 7:20has been bigger than you. Perhaps some doors
- 7:22had to close because God saw a family on the
- 7:25other side of your decision. Perhaps some relationships
- 7:27had to be exposed because God saw a marriage.
- 7:30Perhaps some habits had to be confronted because
- 7:32God saw a ministry. Perhaps some pride had to
- 7:35be broken because God saw the authority He intended
- 7:39to place in your hands. Perhaps some impulsiveness
- 7:42had to be disciplined because God saw decisions
- 7:45you would someday have the power to make. you
- 7:48thought God was dealing with today. God was protecting
- 7:52tomorrow. When God gives someone a vision, there
- 7:57is God's part, and there is the responsibility
- 8:00of the person receiving it. God calls. God gives
- 8:03grace. God empowers. God opens doors. God provides.
- 8:09God anoints. But the person carrying that assignment
- 8:12must learn how to steward what God has placed
- 8:15in their hands. And this is where many people
- 8:17misunderstand anointing. Anointing does not eliminate
- 8:21responsibility. A person can be gifted and still
- 8:24need discipline. A person can be called and still
- 8:27need correction. A person can have tremendous
- 8:29spiritual experiences and still need character
- 8:32development. A person can preach powerfully and
- 8:35still need to govern their tongue. A person can
- 8:38pray fervently and still need to govern their
- 8:41appetite. A person can know scripture and still
- 8:44need boundaries. A person can carry revelation
- 8:47and still need accountability. Because the question
- 8:50is not merely, can God use me? God has used imperfect
- 8:54people throughout scripture. The deeper question
- 8:57is, can my character sustain what God wants to
- 9:01entrust to me? And that brings us to something
- 9:03we are going to explore deeply throughout this
- 9:06season. Discipline protects vision. But I want
- 9:12to make something very clear. When I speak about
- 9:15self -discipline, I am not talking about becoming
- 9:19independent from God. I am saying the exact opposite.
- 9:23Galatians chapter 5 identifies self -control
- 9:26as fruit of the spirit. Christian discipline
- 9:29is not simply human willpower. It is a surrendered
- 9:32person cooperating with the Holy Spirit. There
- 9:35are battles you cannot win simply by telling
- 9:37yourself to be stronger. There are appetites
- 9:40that require spiritual transformation. There
- 9:42are wounds that require healing. There are patterns
- 9:45that require the renewing of your mind. There
- 9:48are temptations from which sometimes the wisest
- 9:51spiritual decision is not to prove how strong
- 9:54you are, but to run. We need the Holy Spirit.
- 9:58But dependence upon the Holy Spirit does not
- 10:00eliminate our responsibility to discipline ourselves.
- 10:04Paul understood this. In 1 Corinthians chapter
- 10:079, Paul describes athletes exercising self -control
- 10:11because they are pursuing a prize. Then he says
- 10:14something remarkable, I discipline my body and
- 10:18keep it under control. This is Paul, an apostle,
- 10:23a man carrying extraordinary revelation, a man
- 10:26who encountered Christ, a man used mightily by
- 10:29God. And yet Paul understood, what God has entrusted
- 10:34to me is too valuable for me to live without
- 10:37discipline. That is maturity. Self -discipline
- 10:41is learning to tell yourself no, because there
- 10:43is something greater to which you have already
- 10:45said yes. I can respond, but I don't have to.
- 10:49I can say it, but I don't have to. I can go there,
- 10:53but I don't have to. I can entertain this, but
- 10:56I don't have to. I can satisfy this appetite,
- 10:59but I don't have to. Why? Because there is something
- 11:03greater before me. There is a calling. There
- 11:06is a family. There is a purpose. There is a relationship
- 11:10with God. There is a vision. There is something
- 11:14I refuse to sacrifice for temporary satisfaction.
- 11:17That is discipline. And sometimes, God allows
- 11:22pressure because pressure reveals weaknesses
- 11:24before greater responsibility arrives. Imagine
- 11:28carrying something extremely valuable in a vessel
- 11:30with a hidden crack. As long as the vessel remains
- 11:34empty, the crack may never matter. But once something
- 11:38valuable is poured into it the weakness becomes
- 11:40dangerous Sometimes God exposes the crack before
- 11:45he pours more into the vessel and We become angry
- 11:49about the exposure But exposure may actually
- 11:52be mercy God may reveal your anger before greater
- 11:57authority magnifies it God may confront your
- 12:00appetite before greater access feeds it God may
- 12:05expose your need for approval before greater
- 12:07visibility enslaves you to applause. God may
- 12:12confront financial irresponsibility before greater
- 12:15resources arrive. God may expose unhealthy relationships
- 12:19before they gain access to what He is building
- 12:22through you. God may teach you to govern your
- 12:26tongue before He gives your words greater influence,
- 12:29because whatever remains ungoverned at one level
- 12:32can become destructive at another. The greater
- 12:36the assignment, the more dangerous unmanaged
- 12:39character becomes. Psalm 119 .71 contains one
- 12:44of those statements that only makes sense after
- 12:46you have walked with God for some time. It is
- 12:49good for me that I was afflicted, that I might
- 12:52learn your statutes. Notice the perspective.
- 12:57He does not necessarily call the affliction pleasant.
- 13:00He recognizes what the affliction produced. There
- 13:03are things you survive. that you would never
- 13:06volunteer to experience again, but you can still
- 13:09look back and say, God used it. I wouldn't choose
- 13:13the betrayal, but God used it to teach me discernment.
- 13:17I wouldn't choose the disappointment, but God
- 13:20used it to detach my identity from people's approval.
- 13:23I wouldn't choose the waiting, but God used it
- 13:26to develop patience. I wouldn't choose the humiliation,
- 13:29but God used it to confront pride. I wouldn't
- 13:32choose the loss. but God used it to show me what
- 13:35really mattered. I wouldn't choose the valley,
- 13:38but I meant a version of God in the valley that
- 13:40I had only heard about on the mountain. And perhaps
- 13:44that is what the psalmist means. It was good
- 13:47for me, not because pain is good, not because
- 13:51betrayal is good, not because injustice is good,
- 13:56not because suffering itself is holy. but because
- 13:59God was able to take something painful and produce
- 14:02something valuable through it. So now we return
- 14:08to our question. What if the intervention was
- 14:11about you? What if God was not simply fighting
- 14:15what was trying to destroy you? What if He was
- 14:19also confronting something within you that could
- 14:22eventually destroy what He intended to build
- 14:24through you? What if the closed door saved you?
- 14:29What if the delay matured you? What if the rejection
- 14:33redirected you? What if the exposure protected
- 14:37you? What if the separation purified your environment?
- 14:43What if the pressure revealed something you desperately
- 14:45needed to see? What if the valley developed the
- 14:49discipline you will need on the mountain? What
- 14:52if the fire was not evidence that God had abandoned
- 14:55his purpose? What if the fire was evidence that
- 14:58God was preparing you for it? This changes the
- 15:02prayer Instead of only praying God take me out
- 15:06of this We begin praying God Show me what you
- 15:11are producing in me through this Instead of only
- 15:15asking when will this end? We begin asking who
- 15:19am I becoming? Instead of only asking God to
- 15:23change our circumstances, we become willing to
- 15:26say, God, if there is something in me that cannot
- 15:28go where you are taking me, reveal it. If there
- 15:32is something weakening my discipline, expose
- 15:34it. If there is something contaminating my character,
- 15:38remove it. If there is a relationship influencing
- 15:41me away from your purpose, give me discernment.
- 15:45If there is an appetite attempting to govern
- 15:47me, teach me self -control. If there is pride,
- 15:51confront it. If there is fear, heal it. If there
- 15:55is compromise, uncover it. Refine me. That is
- 16:00a dangerous prayer, because God may answer it.
- 16:03But perhaps it is also one of the most important
- 16:06prayers a person carrying purpose can ever pray.
- 16:12There comes a moment when you stop asking only,
- 16:15when will this fire end? And you begin asking,
- 16:19who is God forming me to become through it? Because
- 16:22when gold comes through the refining process,
- 16:25the testimony is not simply that the gold survived
- 16:27the furnace. Something that did not belong was
- 16:30removed. Something hidden was exposed. Something
- 16:34valuable became purer. And maybe that is where
- 16:37some of us are right now. We have been so focused
- 16:40on surviving the season, that we have not stopped
- 16:43long enough to recognize the person God is producing
- 16:46through the season. You survived, but you also
- 16:49learned. You cried, but you also grew. You lost
- 16:54some things, but perhaps you also discovered
- 16:57what you never needed. Some people walked away,
- 17:01but perhaps their departure revealed relationships
- 17:03you had been depending upon more than you realized.
- 17:06Some doors closed, but perhaps those doors were
- 17:10leading somewhere Your purpose could not afford
- 17:12to go. Some things were exposed. And although
- 17:15the exposure hurt, perhaps God allowed you to
- 17:18see now what could have destroyed much more later.
- 17:21Because sometimes exposure is intervention. Sometimes
- 17:25correction is intervention. Sometimes separation
- 17:29is intervention. Sometimes delay is intervention.
- 17:33Sometimes the fire itself becomes an instrument
- 17:37of intervention. And that brings us back to the
- 17:40question with which we began. What if the intervention
- 17:44was about you? What if you were asking God to
- 17:47change what was happening around you while God
- 17:50was changing what was happening inside you? What
- 17:53if you were asking God to remove your enemies
- 17:55while God was removing something from your character?
- 17:59What if you were asking God to open the door
- 18:01while God was developing the discipline you would
- 18:03need once that door opened? What if you were
- 18:06asking God to enlarge your territory while God
- 18:09was strengthening your character so your territory
- 18:11would not eventually destroy you? What if you
- 18:14were asking God to protect your vision while
- 18:17God was refining the person who would have to
- 18:19carry that vision? Maybe the intervention was
- 18:22never only about the battle. Maybe it was also
- 18:25about the person standing in the battle. Because
- 18:27God knows something we often forget, a great
- 18:30vision carried by an undisciplined person can
- 18:32become dangerous. A great gift without character
- 18:36can become destructive. Greater influence without
- 18:39self -control can magnify weaknesses that once
- 18:42appeared insignificant. Greater authority without
- 18:45humility can damage people. Greater access without
- 18:49boundaries can create opportunities for compromise.
- 18:53Greater visibility without spiritual maturity
- 18:55can turn applause into an addiction and perhaps
- 18:59This is why God sometimes deals with the vessel
- 19:02before expanding the assignment. You are asking
- 19:05for more. God may be preparing you to carry more.
- 19:10You are asking for expansion. God may be building
- 19:13capacity. You are asking for the promise. God
- 19:17may be preparing the person who must live inside
- 19:20that promise. And suddenly the fire begins to
- 19:24look different. If God has allowed you to walk
- 19:28through a refining season, don't come out carrying
- 19:32everything you took into it. Don't carry the
- 19:35same anger. Don't carry the same uncontrolled
- 19:39appetite. Don't carry the same dangerous relationships.
- 19:43Don't carry the same need for approval. Don't
- 19:46carry the same impulsiveness. Don't carry the
- 19:49same compromises. Don't carry the same habits.
- 19:53Don't carry the same inability to say no. Don't
- 19:56carry the same reactions that repeatedly create
- 19:59unnecessary battles. Don't simply ask God to
- 20:02bring you out. Ask Him to bring something out
- 20:04of you. There are things that cannot accompany
- 20:07your purpose. There are habits that cannot accompany
- 20:10your assignment. There are relationships that
- 20:12cannot have unlimited access to your future.
- 20:15There are appetites that cannot be permitted
- 20:17to govern your decisions. There are reactions
- 20:20that must come under control. There are words
- 20:23you must learn not to speak. There are places
- 20:25you must learn not to go. There are invitations
- 20:28you must learn to decline. There are battles
- 20:31you must learn not to fight. There are things
- 20:33you may have the freedom to do, but must develop
- 20:36the wisdom not to do. Because maturity is not
- 20:39simply knowing what you can do. Maturity is understanding
- 20:43what your purpose cannot afford. That is discipline.
- 20:48Discipline protects what God is building. Self
- 20:52-discipline is not punishment. Self -discipline
- 20:54is protection. It is the ability to look at something
- 20:57you desire and say, you are not worth what I
- 21:00would have to sacrifice to have you. It is the
- 21:03ability to control a temporary appetite because
- 21:05you recognize a permanent assignment. It is the
- 21:08ability to govern a moment. because you understand
- 21:11that a moment can affect years. It is the ability
- 21:13to walk away from something attractive because
- 21:16you can see something greater ahead. And for
- 21:18the believer, we do not do this alone. We need
- 21:22the Holy Spirit. We need His conviction. We need
- 21:24His strength. We need His wisdom. We need His
- 21:27power working inside us. Because biblical self
- 21:30-control is not simply human determination. Self
- 21:34-control is fruit produced by a life surrendered
- 21:37to the Spirit of God. But surrender requires
- 21:39cooperation. God can warn you. You still have
- 21:43to listen. God can convict you. You still have
- 21:45to respond. God can reveal the relationship.
- 21:48You still have to establish the boundary. God
- 21:51can expose the habit. You still have to stop
- 21:53feeding it. God can reveal the seed. You still
- 21:56have to stop watering it. God can show you the
- 21:58danger. You still have to walk away. And maybe
- 22:01this is part of what the fire has been teaching
- 22:03you. There are seasons we ask God to explain
- 22:07while we are living through them, but sometimes
- 22:09understanding comes later. One day, you may look
- 22:12backward and realize, that season saved me. Not
- 22:16because everything that happened to you was good.
- 22:18Not because everybody who hurt you was sent by
- 22:21God. Not because injustice suddenly became righteous.
- 22:25But because God, in His providence, refused to
- 22:28waste what happened. He used it. He taught you.
- 22:32He corrected you. He exposed things. He removed
- 22:36things. He strengthened things. He redirected
- 22:40things. He showed you yourself. And somewhere
- 22:44along the journey, the words of the psalmist
- 22:46became your testimony. It was good for me that
- 22:50I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.
- 22:54You may discover that the fire you once begged
- 22:57God to remove became the classroom where He taught
- 23:00you how to carry what you had been praying for.
- 23:03And perhaps then, you will understand. God was
- 23:06not destroying you. God was developing you. God
- 23:10was not abandoning the vision. God was protecting
- 23:13it. God was not finished with you. God was refining
- 23:16you. So if you are walking through the fire today,
- 23:20I want you to ask God a different question. Not
- 23:22only, God, when are you bringing me out? But,
- 23:26God, what are you bringing out of me? What needs
- 23:29to change? What needs to die? What needs to grow?
- 23:33What needs to be confronted? What needs to be
- 23:36healed? What needs to be disciplined? What needs
- 23:39to be surrendered? What relationship needs examination?
- 23:43What seed needs to stop receiving water? What
- 23:47reaction needs to come under the authority of
- 23:50the Holy Spirit? What part of my character needs
- 23:53strengthening before you entrust me with what
- 23:55is next? God, don't allow me to survive the fire
- 23:59and miss the refinement. Don't allow me to leave
- 24:02the valley unchanged. Don't allow me to become
- 24:05so obsessed with defeating the enemy that I fail
- 24:08to recognize what you are developing within me.
- 24:11If you are preparing me for something greater,
- 24:14then prepare all of me. My heart, my mind, my
- 24:18appetites, my relationships, my reactions, my
- 24:22words, my decisions, my character, my discipline,
- 24:27my private life, my public life. Refine me from
- 24:31the inside out, because I don't simply want to
- 24:34arrive at the purpose. I want to become the person
- 24:36capable of carrying it. And maybe that is the
- 24:39revelation God wanted us to see all along. You
- 24:43thought the greatest testimony would be, God
- 24:46brought me out of the fire. But perhaps an even
- 24:49greater testimony will be, look at what God brought
- 24:52out of me through the fire. The fire did not
- 24:55cancel the purpose. The valley did not destroy
- 24:58the vision. The delay did not mean God had forgotten
- 25:02you. God was working. God was shaping. God was
- 25:05correcting. God was protecting. God was preparing.
- 25:09You were being refined. And you were not being
- 25:11refined without reason. You were being refined
- 25:14for a purpose. This is Pamoja Ministry. And in
- 25:18our next conversation we are going deeper into
- 25:20the fire itself. Because the fire does something
- 25:23that comfort often cannot do. It reveals what
- 25:26is really there. Conversation two, the fire reveals
- 25:31what success can hide. Until next time, may God
- 25:35give us the courage not merely to ask him to
- 25:38change our circumstances, but to surrender ourselves
- 25:41to what he desires to change within us.
