Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's up, everybody. Welcome into another edition of the
- 0:12Speaker 1: check O Daily. Andrew did Checko here, Eagles beat reporter
- 0:15Speaker 1: for Inside the Birds dot Com, and I kind of
- 0:18Speaker 1: wanted to take a little look at the offense today,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and with the Jeff Stotlin news, of course, the new
- 0:25Speaker 1: run game coordinator inserted and Ryan Mahaffey. You have Sean
- 0:30Speaker 1: Manning at thirty three years old, Josh Grizzard, and you
- 0:33Speaker 1: look at the way that the staff is being pieced together,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and it's fair to have questions about what the offense
- 0:42Speaker 1: could look like. And now we have no idea of
- 0:44Speaker 1: what they're ultimately going to do offensively. We can make assumptions,
- 0:48Speaker 1: but that can be dangerous at times. But based off
- 0:51Speaker 1: of the influences that they're coming in with and the
- 0:54Speaker 1: changes that they've had, especially with the Staltland move, it's
- 0:58Speaker 1: fair to have a lot of questions and maybe even
- 1:01Speaker 1: to a degree some skepticism as to whether or not
- 1:04Speaker 1: the Eagles are ultimately going to be able to pull
- 1:05Speaker 1: this off. But there's a lot of other questions that
- 1:09Speaker 1: you can sort of tie together with this whole new change.
- 1:14Speaker 1: With this shift philosophically, at least the way that it appears,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and I say appears because Kellen Moore not long ago
- 1:21Speaker 1: came in with this pedigree of bringing in different types
- 1:26Speaker 1: of concepts, motion heavy utilization with the third wide receiver
- 1:30Speaker 1: with eleven personnel, and that didn't manifest. Now, they tried
- 1:33Speaker 1: to do that for about four weeks, had to scrap
- 1:36Speaker 1: it once it wasn't working. But you look at what
- 1:40Speaker 1: this means. So Ryan Mahaffey is a new run game coordinator,
- 1:44Speaker 1: so I've been asked already what I can expect to
- 1:47Speaker 1: see from him, and it would be disingenuous if I
- 1:49Speaker 1: sat here and told you, yeah, it's going to look
- 1:51Speaker 1: like XYZ.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I would imagine you're.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Going to see some Kyle Shanahan Sean McVay influence with
- 1:58Speaker 1: the run game, those stretch plays, outside zone type of things.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And there's always so many different things you can do
- 2:03Speaker 1: in the run game. But you're looking at some of
- 2:05Speaker 1: those influences that I think are going to be prevalent
- 2:08Speaker 1: this year. But you then to take this a step further,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and this is the whole point of today's podcast. It's
- 2:13Speaker 1: to look at do the Eagles have the personnel to
- 2:18Speaker 1: in theory execute some of those things, and I look
- 2:22Speaker 1: at the offensive line. The offensive line in the past
- 2:26Speaker 1: have been drafted to fit a sort of a scheme
- 2:30Speaker 1: and a profile that Jeff stout One typically looks for
- 2:34Speaker 1: with that inside zone type of things, running out of
- 2:37Speaker 1: shotgun all of that. It's these maulers, the Landon Dickerson's,
- 2:40Speaker 1: Jordan Mylatta's.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Now they have Cam Jurgens who's really.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Good in space and he can move well laterally assuming
- 2:48Speaker 1: he's healthy. Jason Kelcey, of course, was very adept at
- 2:51Speaker 1: that Brandon Brooks could do that in the past. There's
- 2:55Speaker 1: other examples of players who can do that. Lane Johnson
- 2:58Speaker 1: obviously incredibly athletic, but when you look at the.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Line and how it's currently constituted, are they going to
- 3:05Speaker 2: be at their best.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Moving laterally and doing some of those type of blocking
- 3:10Speaker 1: that's going to be demanded with a scheme that's like that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You also have a running back in Sakwon Barkley who
- 3:15Speaker 1: doesn't exactly exhibit Le'Veon Bell patience. That's not to say
- 3:20Speaker 1: that Sakwon Barkley isn't among the best players at his
- 3:22Speaker 1: positioned in the NFL, but he's more of a see
- 3:26Speaker 1: it and go He doesn't necessarily wait for increases to
- 3:29Speaker 1: develop or things like that, which is especially important when
- 3:32Speaker 1: you're going to implement the Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay
- 3:37Speaker 1: type of run designs.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So right there, I do have some questions.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Then you look at how the Eagles may evaluate offensive
- 3:47Speaker 1: linemen in the future. You're going to get a new
- 3:50Speaker 1: offensive line coach, and I mentioned that I don't envy
- 3:53Speaker 1: whoever is coming in to replace a legend like Jeff Statlin,
- 3:56Speaker 1: but they're obviously.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Going to have to command the room and they may
- 3:59Speaker 2: have a different type of vision for what they're looking for.
- 4:02Speaker 2: In terms of their linemen. You may see lighter, more spry,
- 4:07Speaker 2: and they have fluid movement ability to get out in
- 4:13Speaker 2: space and do some of those things that may alter
- 4:15Speaker 2: the way that you approach the draft. That may alter
- 4:18Speaker 2: the way that you look at some of the players.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Look, I'm just throwing a player out there, but Brett
- 4:23Speaker 1: Toath was someone who was championed.
- 4:25Speaker 2: By Jeff Stotland.
- 4:28Speaker 1: You know, they always that's saying out there, find someone
- 4:31Speaker 1: who believes in you, like sell and so find someone
- 4:34Speaker 1: who believes in you like Jeff Stottland believes in Brett
- 4:37Speaker 1: Toath and that's a great example of development.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But he's going to be a free agent. Fred Johnson
- 4:41Speaker 2: as well.
- 4:42Speaker 1: You also have to look at the the Lane Johnson situation,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and I'm leaning towards him returning, of course, but that's
- 4:50Speaker 1: that's just a gut feeling based off of him being
- 4:53Speaker 1: injured and missing the final nine games of the season.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But that's ultimately going to leave a little bit of
- 5:01Speaker 1: questions as to how the team approaches offensive linemen. In fact,
- 5:04Speaker 1: if you're going into the draft, you feel a little
- 5:08Speaker 1: bit more comfortable drafting a player that maybe is a
- 5:10Speaker 1: little bit raw, has a little bit of developmental upside,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but hasn't quite reached that ability. Do you necessarily want
- 5:17Speaker 1: to go for that type of player in the draft
- 5:21Speaker 1: and swing big or would you rather go for the
- 5:23Speaker 1: more polished player because Jeff Stoutlin was tremendous in developing
- 5:30Speaker 1: and allowing that player if they were considered raw or
- 5:34Speaker 1: a project, to reach their potential. If you're getting a
- 5:39Speaker 1: new offensive line coach that maybe as a well, he's
- 5:43Speaker 1: not going to have the same background as Jeff Stoutlin,
- 5:45Speaker 1: not that decorated, of course, but you may want to
- 5:47Speaker 1: go for more of a polished player.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Those day three dart throws where you're taking projects in
- 5:52Speaker 2: hopes that they develop as a depth piece or even enjoyed.
- 5:57Speaker 1: My lotest case, a starter in the future the Cameron
- 5:59Speaker 1: Williams to go a little bit more current. That may
- 6:03Speaker 1: be a little bit different in how they go about
- 6:06Speaker 1: day three.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You may not see them go for the swing. You
- 6:08Speaker 2: may see them go for more of a experienced type
- 6:11Speaker 2: of player who fits a certain certain blocking structure. These
- 6:15Speaker 2: are all fair questions that you have to ask yourself.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And then the last point that I would say, because
- 6:21Speaker 2: I know that many don't necessarily exercise patients when you're
- 6:25Speaker 2: looking at the talent that the Eagles have from an
- 6:27Speaker 2: offensive standpoint, I get that, but you have to really
- 6:31Speaker 2: take a step back and think about all these different.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I don't even want to say hindrances, but they are
- 6:39Speaker 1: worthy of pointing out. And that is Josh Grazzard Sean
- 6:43Speaker 1: Mannion haven't worked together before, Ryan Mahavey hasn't been a
- 6:50Speaker 1: run game coordinator before. And you're gonna, in all likelihood
- 6:54Speaker 1: to have another quarterbacks coach, maybe even a new wide
- 6:56Speaker 1: receivers coach. And if they don't all have background with
- 7:00Speaker 1: one another and they're trying to get on the same page.
- 7:02Speaker 1: That's going to take some time to align your thoughts
- 7:06Speaker 1: for Sean Mannion to be able to convey what he's
- 7:09Speaker 1: looking for. You can't bring in a scheme if you
- 7:12Speaker 1: don't know who your personnel is going to be, if
- 7:14Speaker 1: you don't know what the full complement of your personnel.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Is going to be.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So that's going to take some time to gel as
- 7:20Speaker 1: a coaching staff. Again, I still think that there's going
- 7:23Speaker 1: to be a couple of new faces on the offensive
- 7:25Speaker 1: side in addition to Mahaffey, So that's going to take
- 7:29Speaker 1: some time. And when there was so much continuity on
- 7:32Speaker 1: the staff before, whether it was Jamal Singleton, Jason Michael,
- 7:35Speaker 1: Aaron moorehead, you know, you kind of take your pick.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Kevin Patulo had been there since twenty twenty one, There's
- 7:42Speaker 1: Jeff Stotlin. Of course, there's not a lot of I mean,
- 7:46Speaker 1: everybody's sort of going into it on the same page.
- 7:48Speaker 1: They know more or less what the objective is, what
- 7:52Speaker 1: they're looking to accomplish from an offensive perspective. And now,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I mean Mahaffey has experience working with Sean Manning in
- 7:59Speaker 1: Green Bay, of course, but Ryan Mahaffey was in a
- 8:02Speaker 1: different He held a different role.
- 8:05Speaker 2: He was coaching wide receivers last year.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He's overseen offensive line play, but he's never been tasked
- 8:10Speaker 1: with doing something like this, So he's going to have
- 8:13Speaker 1: to really delve into his role and that may take
- 8:16Speaker 1: a little bit of time to acclimate to it and
- 8:19Speaker 1: things like that. And then you also have to look
- 8:21Speaker 1: at the personnel. It's probably going to look a little
- 8:25Speaker 1: bit different. I mentioned all three tight ends are free agents.
- 8:28Speaker 1: They need to add another receiver. You don't know in
- 8:32Speaker 1: terms of offensive line personnel, who's going to be at
- 8:34Speaker 1: your disposal next season with certainty, and you may have
- 8:38Speaker 1: to add some different pieces, and there's certainly going to
- 8:41Speaker 1: be some different wrinkles. But you can see that this
- 8:43Speaker 1: is going to be a drastic change, a departure from
- 8:47Speaker 1: what the Eagles have done in recent years. So to
- 8:49Speaker 1: expect this team, as talented as they may be on
- 8:54Speaker 1: the surface, to just kind of roll out of bed
- 8:56Speaker 1: and get into week one and not have any hiccups,
- 8:59Speaker 1: they get into training camp and not have any growing
- 9:01Speaker 1: pains is a little naive. And I'm not saying that
- 9:04Speaker 1: everybody believes that they should be operating at peak performance
- 9:08Speaker 1: come week one, but it's important to set those expectations
- 9:11Speaker 1: right now.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 12:24Speaker 5: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
- 12:28Speaker 5: one right en.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Up it's going to require a little bit of patience,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but you kind of have to see how things shake out.
- 12:34Speaker 1: It's early February right now, a lot can happen. There's
- 12:38Speaker 1: no need for the overreactions that you see out there,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and just let things play out and see what it is,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and we'll see what the finished product is in September
- 12:48Speaker 1: when they're rolling out that offense and seeing how they're
- 12:52Speaker 1: able to execute it. And I think that is the
- 12:54Speaker 1: fair way of looking at it. But I kind of
- 12:57Speaker 1: just look at the offense and how things are being
- 12:59Speaker 1: tweaked that moment, and it may look on the outside
- 13:03Speaker 1: like there's a lot of turmoil, like there's a big
- 13:05Speaker 1: shake up, and philosophically there will be a big shake
- 13:08Speaker 1: up at least that's the way that it appears right now.
- 13:12Speaker 1: But you owe it to Sean Mannion, you owe it
- 13:14Speaker 1: to the organization to allow things to sort of piece
- 13:18Speaker 1: together and execute things in their vision, and it's not
- 13:22Speaker 1: going to be instantaneous in all likelihood. Maybe they're all
- 13:24Speaker 1: fast learners, maybe they all are able to form that
- 13:29Speaker 1: alignment early on and there's no drop off, but I
- 13:34Speaker 1: think more realistically there's going to be and so.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Just exercise a little.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Bit of patience here as the Eagles continue to reimagine
- 13:43Speaker 1: this offense which was drastically and needed of a change,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and we'll see where things go. That's all I got
- 13:49Speaker 1: for you here on this Saturday morning. That's going to
- 13:52Speaker 1: do it for this edition of the check O Daily.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I'm Andrew to Checko and I'll catch you all on
- 13:57Speaker 1: the next one.
- 14:02Speaker 3: AD
