- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone and welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It's been a while since I've recorded, it feels like.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: If you hadn't seen on Instagram, I was in France for 10 days visiting my sister and my niece and nephew and her husband and everything.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm actually from France, so I was born there, and it's really so special when I get to go over there, and I was really, really missing them and missing that kind of like family time, that sister bonding.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: And honestly, it was quite easy to travel, at least from where I am in Canada.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It was quite simple to travel there.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And then now that I'm back, I'm just quarantining for 14 days, which is so incredibly worth it to get to see them.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And I especially because I normally do go in the summertime, but I kind of waited a few months for things to kind of settle down a little bit.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But we never know when we're going back into maybe a second wave or a lockdown.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to get over there and spend some quality time.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And honestly, it was just amazing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Like if you've ever been to Europe or the south of France, then you know the vibe there is just amazing.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: The food is incredible, everything just tastes better, like the fruits and vegetables just taste better.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And the quality there is also so insane.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I can't even describe it.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: List like, oh, the food there.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: So after all this is done, I'm definitely put it on your list in terms of places to visit.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And I still had all the yummy, delicious things.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: You know, I ate gluten-free croissants, I had some, you know, chocolate gelato that was like dairy-free, which was so incredible.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: It's like a chocolate sorbet.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it was just so delicious.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I think I got it like three or four times when I was there.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It was just so yummy.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, that's kind of what's been going on with me now.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I'm just quarantining and you know, getting ready for fall content.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And of course, Well Nourished is now closed for 2020.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned for when I launch it in 2021 because I will be releasing info on that soon, probably like next month.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: It's October right now, so in November I will be releasing that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of what's been going on with me.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I feel like there hasn't been too much.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I've just been kind of chilling, spending a lot of time with family, and so there's not really that much to catch up on.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So we will just hop right into the episode.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but before I jump in, I do want to thank you guys for leaving all of your reviews and stuff like that on the podcast.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I would love for you to leave a five-star rating and review, especially if you could just write a quick little something.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It just helps the podcast get discovered and helps me, you know, continue to bring you episodes each and every week, um, and sometimes multiple times a week, depending on, you know, the topic and what's going on.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So today we're gonna be talking all about hormones, um, signs of hormone imbalance, what you can do.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: This is kind of gonna be my introductory episode to hormones, because honestly, I feel like each hormone or each group of hormones will need its own episode to really dive into it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So I kind of wanted this just to be an overview to kind of get your toes like in the water if you're unsure about hormones and hormonal imbalances and everything like that.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: With that being said, um, if you do have hormonal imbalances or you think you do after this episode, I would highly recommend um working with someone one-on-one because everyone's hormones are different.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And you're gonna hear me get into that in the episode.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: So when you are hearing this, I do have a couple one-on-one spots available.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Um, so if that's something you're interested in, just head on over to Instagram, send me a DM, and I can kind of tell you more about that.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But yeah, with that being said, let's go ahead and get into the episode.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Live Well Podcast.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: This podcast is designed to help you live well, body, mind, and soul.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Liv, a natural health and wellness expert, and each week you will walk away with the insights, tools, and tips to truly live your best life.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If you are looking to live well, you are in the right place.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: A new episode starts now.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Alright, guys, so today we are talking all about hormones.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And basically, hormones affect everything.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Hormones are your body's chemical messengers, they travel in your bloodstream to your tissues, to your organs, and they work slowly and they have every kind of different function from metabolism to sexual function to reproduction to mood and much, much more.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And so we have what are called endocrine glands, and these are a special type of group of cells that make hormones.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And the major ones are your pituitary, your pineal gland, which you hear me talk about when I talk about cacao, thymus, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, all of these things.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And to be honest, hormones are produced in a very complex process.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Um I won't get into too much of the nitty-gritty in this episode for now.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: We'll save that for when I dive into each hormone individually, but we're gonna go over the signs of hormones imbalance so that you can kind of see maybe do I have one, do I not?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, in this day and age, so many people have a hormone imbalance.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: If you have PMS, you have a hormone imbalance because PMS is actually not normal.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And I'm not sure where this whole PMS is normal came from.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Um and unfortunately, I'm seeing a lot of misinformation on Instagram right now and things like that, trying to normalize PMS like it is normal, and it's not normal.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: You shouldn't be bloated every month, you shouldn't be crampy or fatigued or have mood swings or irritable or you know, screaming one minute and then crying the next.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: None of that is normal.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: And so if you have any of those signs, I mean, spoiler alert, you have a hormone imbalance.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: But some of the other signs of hormone imbalances are things like low libido.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So your libido should be thriving.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: You should be, you know, wanting to be intimate, you know, no struggles there.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: You also headaches, night sweats, you know, weight gain.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: This is especially a sign of hormone imbalance because if you are doing quote unquote all the right things, um, and oftentimes you people I find normally aren't when I get to work with them in my one-on-ones, but also if you are doing all the right things and you're still, you know, not losing weight or you're gaining weight, that's a sign of hormonal imbalance.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You know, breast tenderness, whether that's cyclical or all the time, that's a sign of, you know, hormonal imbalance.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Cravings, whether it be sugar, whether it be salt, both of those stem from different hormonal imbalances.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And if you haven't taken my cravings quiz, make sure to head on over to Instagram and take that.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Um, acne, acne is another sign of hormonal imbalance in a regular cycle.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So you want your cycle to be 28 to kind of 30, 31 days, anything shorter than that or anything longer than that will be hormonally imbalanced.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Um, insomnia, dry skin, PCOS.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: PCOS itself is a sign of hormonal imbalance.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Um, endometriosis, another one that's a sign of a hormonal imbalance that is quote unquote a condition, but the condition itself is a hormonal imbalance.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Once you fix your hormones, you fix the condition.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Um hangriness, so that kind of irritability, hangry feeling, brain fog, depression, anxiety, all of these things are signs that one or more of your hormones are out of balance.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And the thing about hormones and balancing is that they're also interconnected.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: So your hormones from your estrogen, your progesterone, from your cycle are connected to your thyroid, and they're also connected to your adrenals, which are, you know, your fight or flight and your stress response and all of that.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: So if one of them are off, it's gonna have this cascade response that's gonna affect everything else down the line.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So it's not, it's really a domino effect.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It's not like only one hormone gets affected.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: If one hormone's affected, a lot more hormones are usually affected.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And so you need to work in tandem with all of them in order to balance them.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So what are some of the causes of hormonal imbalance?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Number one, I'm gonna go through a few of them.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: I think I have oh, we'll go through probably about eight, but number one is poor gut health.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: If you haven't listened to the leaky gut episode yet, make sure you go back and listen to that because poor gut health, if you don't have your gut health, you have nothing.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Your gut health is tied to everything from depression, anxiety, brain fog, but also the way you produce hormones, because if your gut is leaky and that's not right, then you're not having the right building blocks in order to actually make your hormones.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: If you have an overgrowth, if you have something like SIBO and you have too much bad gut bacteria, again, that's gonna cause a hormone imbalance.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: If you have candida, which is tied to poor gut health, you're gonna have a hormonal imbalance.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: And so what you eat and like having poor gut health is really gonna affect your hormones.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Every time you eat, you honestly have the ability to influence your hormones because you're influencing leptin and you're influencing ghrelin and you're influencing insulin and estrogen, depending on what you're eating, because we can eat foods that clear estrogen and we can eat foods that mimic estrogen, we can eat foods that upregulate hormones, and we can eat foods that downregulate and shut down our hormone processes.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: So having poor gut health is honestly one of the keys of hormonal imbalance.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And what I always want people to remember is that you don't necessarily have to have quote unquote gut health symptoms in order to have poor gut health.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: So you don't necessarily need to be bloated or have cramping to have poor gut health.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: It can manifest as brain fog, joint pain, depression, anxiety, low libido, mood swings, weight gain, acne, you know, all this kind of stuff.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: So make sure you go back and listen to that episode.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Another major, huge big cause is poor liver detoxification.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So unfortunately, in this day and age, we are always being bombarded with lots of different toxins, whether it's, you know, pollutants in the air from the environment, whether it is toxic, you know, food that we're eating, food that's just not made with the best ingredients, that are processed and have things like harmful oils.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And your harmful oils are your vegetable oil.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: So that's your canola oil, or otherwise called as rapeseed oil, which if you I think I mentioned this in another episode, which is frequently found in oat milk, so be cautious about that.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Um, sunflower seed oil, grapeseed oil, all those kinds of oils, those are harmful.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: But also things like your household cleaning products that can burden your liver.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: You know, your makeup products or your beauty products, if they have a lot of harmful chemicals in them, then that's burdening your liver.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: You know, if you're not eating a super great diet, that's gonna burden your liver.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: And then on top of that, if you are consuming a lot of alcohol, that's gonna burden your liver.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And so when your liver is overburdened with, you know, a poor diet, harmful like um beauty products and cleaning products and things like that, and then we're putting on maybe alcohol as well, your liver actually can't metabolize through the hormones that it needs to.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So it gets overburdened, and then you get a hormonal imbalance because your liver isn't actually able to detox properly.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: So that's why sometimes, you know, helping or things that age your liver and detoxing can be extremely helpful in hormonal imbalances because while, yes, your liver naturally is able to, you know, detoxify and you don't need to go on a quote unquote detox, if your liver is overburdened, you might need some extra support with that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: So I would be very cautious, you know, in terms of your liver and whether that's working properly in terms of hormonal imbalances.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Another cause of hormonal imbalance that's kind of tied to poor gut health is actually constipation.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So for those of you who don't know, you should be having a bowel movement every single day.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: It should be a sausage form, it should be, you know, milk chocolate, it should be in one kind of form, uh, and if it's not, if you're on the more constipated side, then this is gonna affect your hormones.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And that's because normally, you know, the waste that our body is excreting is going to be excreted more frequently.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: If you're constipated and your stool is sitting in your bowels for a longer period of time, then the estrogen that is supposed to get, you know, passed through is actually getting reabsorbed.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: So the hormones that are supposed to be, you know, detoxified and pushed out are getting reabsorbed into your body and then affecting your hormone levels.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So if you struggle with constipation, you probably have a hormone imbalance.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And then another cause of hormonal imbalance is an HPA access dysfunction.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So this is tied back to your adrenals.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: It's that, you know, it could be wired and tired, it could be just tired feeling, or it could be a wired feeling as well, depending on where you are on the spectrum of adrenal fatigue and your HPA access.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: But basically, your adrenals are these cute little glands that make your cortisol, your epinephrine, your norepinephrine, and everything like that.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: If that is, you know, overworked, if you are burning yourself out and those hormones can't be produced properly, or you're getting to the stage of burnout and you're not producing cortisol, then you're gonna have a hormone imbalance.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Yes, you already have a hormone imbalance in those hormones, like your cortisol and everything like that, but you're also gonna get a hormonal imbalance in your thyroid, and that can lead to things like hypothyroid.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And what's that gonna do?
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: And that's gonna trigger another cascade of hormonal imbalances.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: So you really want to make sure that your HPA access is working really well and that your adrenals are nice and healthy.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: You don't want to be tired all the time, you don't want to be wired and tired either.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And so you really want to nurture and take care of that HPA access.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Another cause of hormonal imbalance is not eating enough.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: So I see this honestly daily on my Instagram and with a lot of my one-on-one clients.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Women, for some reason, right now, are not eating enough.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And when we don't eat enough as women, we physically do not have the nutrients and the building blocks to make hormones.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: This can not only lead to you completely losing your cycle, but it can lead to an irregular cycle, but also also all of your PMS symptoms.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I think I said also way too many times there.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: But you get what I mean.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: If we're not eating enough, we do not have the building blocks to make the hormones and to have a proper regulation of all your hormones.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: And so when we're not eating enough, your body is like, oh god, like she's not giving me enough.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: I can't be like sending energy to make hormones and have a cycle right now because I just need enough to survive.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Like, I just need to use that to make the heart keep beating and my lungs keep working.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And so that's why it's important when you're not eating enough, that kind of system, those pathways get shut down.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: So when we start eating more and we nurture and nourish our bodies properly, then our hormones can start to come more into balance.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Another cause of hormonal imbalance is inflammation.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: So inflammation is a killer.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: You guys have probably heard me say this many, many times.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And of course, inflammation has many different effects on your body, you know, in terms of like gut health, joint health, brain health, whether you get things like IBS and IBD, other inflammatory conditions, but inflammation also leads to a hormonal imbalance.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: So we really want to do everything we can not to cause inflammation in our body.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: And inflammation usually gets triggered by things like poor diet, um, outside stressors, being in a constant stress state, like we talked about in terms of your adrenals.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: All of that leads to inflammation, and inflammation will affect your hormones.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Another cause of hormone imbalance is insulin resistance.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So you guys have heard me talk about insulin resistance when it comes to acne and things like that.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: But insulin resistance is super important and is actually tied specifically to PCOS.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: And basically, PCOS is an insulin resistance issue.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Once you solve the insulin resistance, you solve the PCOS.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: But if you're becoming insulin resistant because of your high sugar diet or your high glucose diet, then that's gonna cause a hormone imbalance, not only due to insulin, but it's gonna affect your levels of estrogen progesterone.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And that's how it triggers PCOS, and that's why it's such an issue when it comes to hormones is insulin resistance.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: So we really want to do everything we can to keep insulin steady.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: And if we also remember, insulin is a fat storage hormone.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: So every time we spike insulin, we store fat.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: And so that's another reason that when you become insulin resistant and you get things like weight gain, how the weight gain can affect your hormones.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Because unfortunately, once someone gains weight, weight isn't metabolically inactive.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: So the weight you hold around your midsection is actually metabolically active and influences your hormones.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: So it's not like resting, it's not um nonchalant, kind of just chilling there and not doing anything.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: That weight, that excess weight that you gain actually influences your hormones again.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: So we kind of have this double whammy where like the fat that you then store is then triggering more hormonal imbalance.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: So that's why you really want to get your insulin resistance in check.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, we have things like exogenous toxins, which I kind of touched on in terms of like things that are causing um your signs of hormonal imbalance.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: So these are things that like mimic your hormones and basically make your body think that it can attempt to create those hormones using the wrong building blocks.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: So things that are exogenous toxins are usually beauty products, um, household cleaners, anything like that.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Um, plastics, plastics is a huge exogenous toxin.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Please do not consume food and plastic or heat your food and plastic or drink from plastic as least as possible because all of those things have things like BPAs and BPS.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And no, BPA-free is not better.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: BPA-free still has very harmful chemicals in it that affect your hormones and can influence the hiring or lowering of different hormones and can honestly affect fertility and reproductive issues as well as just general hormonal imbalance.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And so, one thing you also want to think about in terms of all these causes of hormonal imbalance and these signs of hormonal imbalance is that it is ultimately gonna have an effect on your reproductive and your fertility issues.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: So if you're someone, if you're a female of reproductive age right now and you think you're gonna be getting into, you know, the time where you're gonna be at least trying to have kids in the next five years, you definitely want to think about your hormones and your hormone imbalances and supporting them in a way that's gonna foster, you know, regular cycles, healthy hormones, and allow you to have a healthy pregnancy and fertility.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of an overview in terms of like the signs of hormonal imbalance and what causes hormonal imbalance.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: As you can see, there are so many signs and so many causes.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: So it's really important to um work with someone to kind of see which hormones might be off.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: And that's the thing.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: One of the top questions I get is how to balance your hormones.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And please, guys, do not self-prescribe hormone balancing supplements.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: And the issue with this is that certain hormones may be high or low for different people, and so what works for someone else may not work for you because your hormones, yes, are still out of balance, but if your estrogen is low and you know your uh progesterone is high, you're gonna need something else than someone who's taking something for high estrogen and low progesterone, if that makes sense, or someone else who has high testosterone.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: You know, if you influence one of them, you're gonna influence a lot of them.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, when you self-prescribe and you don't work with someone in order to see which ones are off for you, then you're not gonna know which herbs and which ones are best for you.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: And you can honestly end up causing more harm than good, end up making your symptoms worse, making your cycle worse, and everything like that.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: So I highly recommend working with someone to get your um hormones in balance.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: But what you can start doing is you can definitely start avoiding inflammatory oils and fats.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: So stop consuming the vegetable oils.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: They are very high in omega-6 oils, which are inflammatory, and as we learned, inflammation really affects your hormones.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: They're basically less stable and easily oxidized in the body, and the inflammation can even influence reproductive cells.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: So think PCOS and more.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: What you do want to consume are the really good healthy fats like coconut oil, avocados, and things like that, because especially with coconut oil, these saturated fats are the key for the building blocks of hormones.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And this is because G protein receptors need to be coupled with lipids in order to function.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: And so this is important because there's like this little alpha subunit that is covalently linked that is responsible for turning off and on what is called adeny cyclase.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: And this helps hormones signal.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: So by consuming this, you allow the G receptor proteins to be coupled and allow them to function, which allows that hormone to be signaled and everything to be balanced.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: So not only that, but it can also help in terms of like weight loss and reducing inflammation, which will in turn it triggers more than just that one pathway.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: It'll work in that many different pathways.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: And as you guys have already heard hear me say, eliminate plastic and eliminate toxic chemicals.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Please, please, please eliminate toxic plastics and toxic chemicals.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: There's a great app.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Um, it's called Think Dirty.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: You guys have probably heard me talk about it before, but it is a great app to use to kind of check if your products are dirty.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And I also want you to be careful of greenwashing.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: If you guys saw my stories, I did on green washing.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I did one on method.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Method cleaners are marketed to you as being, you know, naturally derived good-for-you cleaners, but they actually contain so many endocrine disruptors, so many things that are toxic to your health.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: And so I really encourage you to be aware of the products that you're using and use something like the Think Dirty app, which is free, or log on to the Environmental Working Group Cosmetics Database and check your products there.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Um, either of the two, they have, you know, cleaners, they have laundry detergents, but they even have things like makeup.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: And your skin is your largest organ, right?
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: So when we think about whether it's cleaners or something like makeup or body lotion, your skin is absorbing everything that you put on it.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: So the lotion that you're putting on every day, the makeup, the foundation that you're putting on every day, your body absorbs that.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: And so if it's containing endocrine disrupting chemicals, then your hormones are going to be out of balance.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: So while you do need to heal and fix and balance everything that's going on, and I can work with you to do that in my one-on-one, we also need to eliminate like the fuel on the fire, basically.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: So we need to fix the fire, but we also need to stop throwing things on the fire.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And the things on the fire are your inflammatory oils, your plastics, your endocrin-disrupting chemicals and your beauty products and cleaners, and laundry detergent, and things like that.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And another thing we need to do is fix your gut health.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: So, as you guys heard me say, leaky gut and other gut imbalances can really impact other hormones, including estrogen, basically by disrupting your estroone.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: And this is the gut bacteria that metabolizes estrogen.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: So these gut microbes produce what is called beta-glucuronidase, which is an enzyme that actually increases the levels of free estrogen in your circulating blood.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And so when our gut microbiome is healthy and balanced, then the estrobolum can regulate and the right level of estrogen within the body.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: But when we're in balance and we have inflammation because our gut is leaky and we've been doing things like consuming gluten, then this gut dysbiosis can drive the production of estrogen in the other direction.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Actually, whether it could be high or low, it can go in either way, and disrupting the normal flow and leading to estrogen-related pathologies.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: So it's also important to keep in mind that estrogen imbalance not only is important in terms of hormonal regulation, but is actually a very important risk in terms of your risk at developing breast cancer.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: So there's different types of estrogen, and I can get into that in terms of I can do a whole episode on estrogen, but you have different types of estrogen.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Some of them are harmful estrogens that can lead to cancer, and some of them aren't.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, a lot of the time, um, it's usually the estrogen imbalance in the harmful one, which is the 16 OH1, um, that triggers cancer and can lead to an increased risk.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: So we want to fix your gut health.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: We want to work on leaky gut.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Go back, listen to that episode.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: If you need help on fixing your gut, reach out and we can do that.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: But you need to fix your gut if you have hopes in terms of balancing your hormones.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: And of course, another thing we also want to stop adding fuel to the fire are things like sugar.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: So we all know the dangers of blood sugar.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: You guys have heard me talk about sugar.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: If you haven't heard the cravings episode, go back and listen to that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: But sugar is basically leaves your blood sugar on a roller coaster and will leave you not only hormonally hungry, but with increased cravings later.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: So when your blood sugar rises after consuming something that's high sugar, and note it doesn't have to be high like white sugar, carbs are sugar.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: So things like pastas, breads, crackers, these are all high sugar.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Insulin is released, and this basically allows your cells to take in blood sugar for energy or storage and prevents fat cells from being broken down.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: The problem is that most of us aren't running marathons or running 20K to end up to use all of this that actually needs to be, you know, used throughout the day.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: So it ends up getting stored as fat.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: And so if the blood sugar spikes are fast and high, then this excess insulin is going to drive a blood sugar down quickly, and then your body might enter a state of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: And then at which point your body will then release cortisol and your liver responds by releasing the hormone called glucagon, which works to raise your blood sugar.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And so the cortisol is the issue here because when we are producing too much cortisol, it steals the precursors for making sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: And this is what is called the cortisol steal.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So not only will this roller coaster offset your hormones and leave you feeling fatigued and low and give you cravings, which will make you want to eat more sugar and send this into another vicious spiral, but it's actually going to interfere with your sex hormones too.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: So your estrogen, your progesterone, your regular cycle, everything like that.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and of course, we also know that sugar does things like trigger acne and all this other kind of stuff.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: So we can really see you guys know the dangers of sugar when it comes to healthy gut and skin, but now we also understand the role of sugar when it comes to your hormones and when it comes to your sex hormones.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: And of course, that also goes down to libido too.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Once you fix all this, you also fix your libido issues.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: When you fix your gut health, when you balance your hormones, when you get rid of inflammatory fats, eliminate plastics, toxic chemicals, everything like that, everything kind of comes back into balance.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: But as you guys can see, it's really multifactorial.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: You can't, you know, only do one thing.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: You need to get rid of all these other things that are causing the problem, and then also work to fix the problem itself.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: So that is kind of an overview on where to start in terms of where to start balancing your hormones and then what's causing your hormone imbalances, and then signs to look out for in terms of, you know, if you have any of these signs, then you probably have a hormone imbalance.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: As you guys are listening to this, my one-on-one is open for a few people to take on.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: I think I have three spots to take on for the rest of 2020.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and you guys can start in the next couple weeks.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: So if you want to fix your hormones so that PMS isn't ruining your life, you know, if you want to fix your gut health and all the things like that so that basically you have energy, you're not PMSing every month, your libido is great, you know, you feel great in your body, you're not holding on to excess weight, you're not fatigued anymore, you're not getting headaches, you're not getting bloated, you're not, you know, all of those things that we mentioned.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Um, just reach out and let me know, and I can see if it's a fit for you.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: But those are where I would start in terms of balancing your hormones, and that's kind of like the 411 overview in terms of hormones and fixing those.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I will do a deep dive into each of the hormones going forward so that you kind of have this basic knowledge now, and then we can go forward in the future episodes and get into the real nitty-gritty science.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: I know I did get kind of scientific in a few minutes of this episode, but it's really to help you understand kind of how these things are so harmful to you so that you know kind of how to fix them.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: So I hope you guys enjoyed this episode.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: I would love for you to give me a five star rating and review.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: It really helps to grow the podcast.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Share it on your Instagram if you're listening to it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Share it on your stories, tag me and let me know your favorite takeaway as well.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I would love to hear back.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I hope you guys are all having a fantastic day, and I will talk to you in the next episode.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Bye, guys.
