- Sean Graver: So someone at your company just got let go after almost 10 years on the job. And the word going around is that they got replaced by someone cheaper. Well, welcome back to Prayer Before Work. My name is Sean. And as we look into this one, it's 10 years of showing up, of solving problems, of being the person people relied on. And in the end, it came down to a line on the spreadsheet. Maybe you got the we're family here email at some point, and maybe you believed it a little. And now you're wondering if loyalty from an employer was ever real, or if it disappears the moment it costs too much. Now, the psalmist deals with disappointment like this too, not from a company, but from people he trusted. And he writes in Psalm 118, verse 8. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. Now, I tend to be cynical at times, but I don't read this as cynical. I think it's just an honest statement. Humans, people, the organizations that we build, they're limited. I mean, even well meaning ones make decisions under pressure that don't line up with the things they say when times are good. And that doesn't mean you stop doing excellent work or that you stop caring about the people beside you, but it means that your sense of worth and security can't be built on a company's language because companies are made of people and people change and budgets change with them. And your value was never actually decided by a job title or how much tenure you have. It was decided long before any job offer showed up. So do good work because that's who you are. Build real relationships with the people around you because that's what actually lasts past a layoff. But hold the company's promises with an open hand. I mean, put your weight down somewhere sturdier than on an org chart. So let's pray. God, when when trust gets broken by people or systems that we believe in, remind us that you are the one place our security was always meant to rest. Help us keep doing good work without needing a a company to prove our worth back to us. And give us compassion for anyone around us who's walking through a layoff or a loss like this right now. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Now go make today count.
