- 0:05Speaker 1: You knows. Hello, Welcome back to the book Watchers.

- 0:40Speaker 1: That, probably you and every other man in the Tri State.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Area Tristate area where I.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Mean where the metropolitan area.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Metropolitan Like that sounds better because like we're because we're
- 0:59Speaker 4: not in the Tri State area.
- 1:00Speaker 3: We're in Texas, all right, We're in Texas. Right.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, there he goes. There you go, just
- 1:13Speaker 2: just to violate, Jacob sears.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I don't have my headphones in damn.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Anyway, Welcome back to book Watchers. If you're looking at
- 1:25Speaker 2: description bill, you'll see a lead to the other podcast
- 1:27Speaker 2: as that's where they all usually are, as well as
- 1:31Speaker 2: the Patreon facecot subscribe. I'm just gonna jump right into
- 1:37Speaker 2: today's episode. So today's episode, I'm gonna be talking about
- 1:41Speaker 2: The Ring, the original og novel, because apparently I haven't
- 1:46Speaker 2: done this yet. I guess I was waiting on it
- 1:50Speaker 2: till I decided to read the other novels. But I'll
- 1:53Speaker 2: just start now because I haven't read the other ones yet.
- 1:56Speaker 2: But I know, I probably talked about some of the
- 1:59Speaker 2: plot with when it comes to the Ring, But yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 2: today I'm gonna go over the original novel by Koji Suzuki,
- 2:10Speaker 2: And of course this is the book that started the
- 2:13Speaker 2: inspiration or started the whole Ring franchise from the spawned
- 2:18Speaker 2: the films, the TV the TV movie first, and then
- 2:21Speaker 2: the Japanese horror film, the Korean horror film, and then
- 2:25Speaker 2: of course the American one that we know of today.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. You want to see a
- 2:31Speaker 2: real fucking weird ass movie. Look up, It's on YouTube, y'all.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Look up the Original Ring nineteen ninety five TV Japanese movie.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It's like the Yes if I call it the yestification
- 2:47Speaker 2: of Sotoka because this girl, the actress, full titties, fulld
- 2:53Speaker 2: teddies out like boobs like Mike. Damn girl work the
- 3:00Speaker 2: yesification of sodal.
- 3:04Speaker 3: So.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And just so you know, the novel is way different
- 3:07Speaker 2: than the movies, and the TV movie is probably the
- 3:10Speaker 2: closest adaptation we have to the actual novel because plot twist.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Uh in the novel, you don't get the phone call.
- 3:19Speaker 2: There is no phone call at the end of the
- 3:21Speaker 2: At the end of the curse fade. That's something made
- 3:23Speaker 2: up for the movies.
- 3:24Speaker 1: For the.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure the Japanese one had it. It's been
- 3:29Speaker 2: a while since I watching the Japanese film. The American
- 3:31Speaker 2: one film has it, and I think the Japanese one
- 3:33Speaker 2: Japanese films have it as well.
- 3:35Speaker 4: So I'm there was a phone call, it's just that
- 3:37Speaker 4: like it wasn't like the whole like seven days. It
- 3:40Speaker 4: was just more like you get the phone call, but
- 3:42Speaker 4: it's just static.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, But in the book you don't get that.
- 3:45Speaker 2: All the video, the the curse tape that you watch
- 3:48Speaker 2: tells you you have one week to live, and then
- 3:51Speaker 2: it just stops there and you're just like, oh, okay.
- 3:54Speaker 4: They had to kind of dance to infer from previous
- 3:57Speaker 4: victims that like they have some days to live, because
- 4:02Speaker 4: the previous victims all had something in common is that
- 4:06Speaker 4: they watched the videotape and then a week later they died.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And in this book, because I'm going over the plot
- 4:14Speaker 2: in the summer, I have doesn't have the killings of
- 4:17Speaker 2: the first killings that happen. So in the beginning of
- 4:19Speaker 2: the book you have several see several depictions of different
- 4:24Speaker 2: teenagers three different teenagers die over the course of this time.
- 4:28Speaker 2: One of them sticks out to me the most is
- 4:30Speaker 2: there's a motorcycle accident where a guy is driving a
- 4:34Speaker 2: motorcycle and then he dies, crashes, dies, His face is
- 4:39Speaker 2: like frozen, and from his helmet comes out a wad
- 4:43Speaker 2: of weird black long hair and it scurries over to
- 4:48Speaker 2: a We call it a little rain drain, A rain
- 4:53Speaker 2: rain drain, a drain, one of the drains you see
- 4:56Speaker 2: on side of the road, like a big water. Hair
- 4:58Speaker 2: just scurries over and goes into the sewer. And Yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 2: if you've only watched the movies, you're gonna be like,
- 5:06Speaker 2: what the fuck? Because I was like, what the fuck?
- 5:10Speaker 2: So book it up further ride so this movie or
- 5:14Speaker 2: not in this movie? Oh my god, this book. So
- 5:17Speaker 2: after finding out three other teenagers died at the same
- 5:21Speaker 2: time and the same exact biz armed manner as his
- 5:25Speaker 2: as this character's niece Kazuki Ashaikawa before we begin. The
- 5:30Speaker 2: book was released back in nineteen ninety one in Japan
- 5:34Speaker 2: and two thousand and three in the United States, and.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It was released in.
- 5:40Speaker 2: By Kada Kato Kawa in Japan and then of course
- 5:47Speaker 2: Vertical Inc.
- 5:48Speaker 1: In the United States, and this is one of five four.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Two four books five books, sorry, five books, and one
- 6:01Speaker 2: of them the last one, still is not released in
- 6:03Speaker 2: the United States. What are you all doing? Gimme tied anyway. So,
- 6:08Speaker 2: after finding out these teenagers die is very similar to
- 6:10Speaker 2: his niece. Kazuki Ashakawa, a reporter from the Daily News,
- 6:18Speaker 2: starts a personal investigation, and his search leads him to
- 6:22Speaker 2: a to Hakoni Pacific Land, a holiday resort where the
- 6:28Speaker 2: teenagers were together one week before their deaths. There he
- 6:32Speaker 2: happens upon a mysterious, unmarked videotape as per usual, and
- 6:37Speaker 2: on this videotape is twenty minutes of a sequence of
- 6:41Speaker 2: abstract and real scenes, ending with the text warning that
- 6:45Speaker 2: the viewer has one week to live. The next part,
- 6:49Speaker 2: was supposedly explains a means of avoiding death and is
- 6:55Speaker 2: later referred to as the charm, is overwritten by an advertisement.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So so, originally in the novel the book the film
- 7:05Speaker 2: will show will tell you have one week to live,
- 7:07Speaker 2: but they'll also tell you how to survive death, how
- 7:13Speaker 2: to get out survive this, and they call that the term.
- 7:16Speaker 2: But for whatever reason, that was over written with an advertisement.
- 7:20Speaker 2: On this radio tape. So obviously those teenagers did not
- 7:23Speaker 2: ever figure out how to bypass this the death. So
- 7:29Speaker 2: the tape terrifies Ashikawa, who was convinced its warning is true,
- 7:34Speaker 2: despite the despite his fate or his incoming fate. He
- 7:40Speaker 2: takes the videotape and enlists the help of his old
- 7:43Speaker 2: high school friend, right Rajugi ryu Yuji hone Yama, now
- 7:53Speaker 2: a university professor.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Now, this is this guy. This, this is the guy.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Uh huh oh, that's right. You've read this book, haven't you.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he has a This guy sucks. This guy sucks.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I don't know why the I don't know why the
- 8:12Speaker 2: author decided to write this character. I find it weird.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But to give you the clean version, y'all, where Yuji
- 8:22Speaker 2: is a piece of shit and he has a history
- 8:24Speaker 2: of a certain thing of essay, well, I will say,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and that makes up. They make a point of that
- 8:31Speaker 2: in the book. For some reason, I find that weird.
- 8:34Speaker 4: But and I mean the the main character has moments
- 8:39Speaker 4: of doubt like should he even be allowed to this
- 8:40Speaker 4: guy at his home?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yes?
- 8:42Speaker 3: Like should he leave him alone with his wife and daughter?
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yes? I would be very concerned about that too.
- 8:49Speaker 4: But at the same time, he just like he he
- 8:51Speaker 4: kind of just shrugs it off at the same time
- 8:53Speaker 4: like okay, well kind of at this point kind of
- 8:55Speaker 4: like nothing they can do about it, that he can
- 8:57Speaker 4: do about it, but at.
- 8:58Speaker 1: The same time like it's a fuck, He's a piece
- 9:01Speaker 1: of shit.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So he enlists Reyuji and has him watch the tape
- 9:06Speaker 2: and asks for a copy to study at home, to
- 9:09Speaker 2: which Ashikawa obliges. He gives him a copy of it,
- 9:13Speaker 2: and the men began dism basically analyzing the footage to
- 9:21Speaker 2: figure out where it was shot in the broadcast. After
- 9:25Speaker 2: a fruitless day chasing leads, Asha Kawa goes home only
- 9:30Speaker 2: to find that his wife has watched the video and
- 9:33Speaker 2: with their infant daughter on her lap out of curiosity.
- 9:36Speaker 2: So his wife and child have been exposed to the videotape.
- 9:41Speaker 2: While yeah, yeah, so there they got seven days. The
- 9:46Speaker 2: next day, Reyuji figures the moment of near blackness appearing
- 9:52Speaker 2: during the real during real sequences quote unquote are likely
- 9:56Speaker 2: caused by the recording device blinking, so there's like these
- 10:01Speaker 2: weird blinking effects that happen. So the two travel to Kamakura,
- 10:07Speaker 2: where Uji knows someone who has with a personal archive
- 10:12Speaker 2: of paranormal cases from Japan, searching for individuals with psychic
- 10:17Speaker 2: photo photographic abilities. Aided by subtal other clues from the footage,
- 10:23Speaker 2: they find the record of Sadako Yamamurah, a young woman
- 10:27Speaker 2: born in issue sho Ashima Island. So this is where
- 10:34Speaker 2: we meet Sadako. Uh, let me guess back, Reiji theorizes
- 10:41Speaker 2: the woman's already dead. Of course Sodo is already dead,
- 10:44Speaker 2: which I mean she is, and the last part of
- 10:46Speaker 2: the tape contains the will she wanted the viewer to fulfill.
- 10:51Speaker 2: To figure it out, they travel to the island and
- 10:55Speaker 2: the next morning to learn more about Sotaco's past. Stuck
- 11:00Speaker 2: on the island because of a heavy storm, the two
- 11:02Speaker 2: aren't aren't able to unearth any clues leaden to them
- 11:05Speaker 2: solving the mystery. But thanks to Oshimura and Yoshino. Yep, Yoshinino, Yoshinino.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Oh my god, I'm terrible with damn y'all. Yoshi Yoshino,
- 11:19Speaker 2: there you go, colleagues of Oshakawa. They pieced together Sadaos
- 11:22Speaker 2: timeline up to thirty years ago, and they have hit
- 11:27Speaker 2: and of course by this point they hit a dead
- 11:29Speaker 2: end with trying to find out. So apparently she was
- 11:32Speaker 2: a sados timeline we get in thirty years ago, so
- 11:36Speaker 2: this is she's been dead for quite some time. With
- 11:39Speaker 2: their deadline approaching, or the seven days approaching, Ryuji has
- 11:44Speaker 2: the idea of retracing the resort lodge's history to find
- 11:49Speaker 2: out how and why the tape was there. Yoshino finds
- 11:54Speaker 2: out that the resort used to be a.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Super tuberculosis Yeah, there was a like during the time
- 12:08Speaker 4: when tuberculosis was like was very it was a thing.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I mean it still, I think it still is a thing.
- 12:13Speaker 4: It's just like back then there was not that meant
- 12:15Speaker 4: there was not effective treatments for it. This resort was
- 12:20Speaker 4: a was like a retreat for people recovering from tuberculosis,
- 12:23Speaker 4: so like one of the like more natural remedies for
- 12:27Speaker 4: curing it. Was like open air, like clean fresh air,
- 12:31Speaker 4: and like the retreat was meant to be a place
- 12:34Speaker 4: for them to relax, for them to recover, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 4: get over it. So but then after it was closed down,
- 12:40Speaker 4: it was turned into it into this resort.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So from here they find out that Sadako's father lived
- 12:46Speaker 2: in his last days here and the only survivor surviving
- 12:49Speaker 2: staff member working there during the pioneer of Sadako's disappearance
- 12:53Speaker 2: is a GP now go.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Now go.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Utaro, so of course, when the storm clears, they travel
- 13:05Speaker 2: to the doctor's office and recognizes him as the aggressive
- 13:08Speaker 2: man in the videotape, so he's in the tape itself,
- 13:12Speaker 2: and Brugi presses the doctor for answers, and the doctor
- 13:16Speaker 2: omits to being infatuated with Sodaco, and as if guided
- 13:25Speaker 2: by something beyond himself, he will say that her in
- 13:31Speaker 2: a abandoned cabin deep in the woods and in the
- 13:33Speaker 2: process infecting her with smallpox and learning she is intersex.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Yeah she So it turns out Staca was like a
- 13:45Speaker 4: type of uh so intersex. And the thing is is
- 13:48Speaker 4: that she wasn't a like a hermaphrodite so for say,
- 13:54Speaker 4: but she was born with uh she's technically genetically male,
- 13:59Speaker 4: but she was all so female. And though like she
- 14:04Speaker 4: still has you know, the lady parts, but she also
- 14:07Speaker 4: has a pair of testicles.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Yes, I don't me.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Just laugh at that, but still it's like one of
- 14:12Speaker 4: those It was like it was shocking, like I was like,
- 14:14Speaker 4: oh yeah, oh okay, that's pretty shocking. And the thing
- 14:19Speaker 4: is is that like part of like the Curse of
- 14:21Speaker 4: Sodoco was like her not only because of her rage
- 14:24Speaker 4: and anger for being essayed, but because she was also
- 14:27Speaker 4: dealing with like a lifelong bitterness because to her, she
- 14:31Speaker 4: was raised as a woman and the fact that she
- 14:36Speaker 4: was intersex and that she was also genetically male was
- 14:42Speaker 4: like a huge like point of shame for her and
- 14:46Speaker 4: like a huge source of her bitterness, like because since
- 14:48Speaker 4: she was raised as a woman, she was like she
- 14:51Speaker 4: was raised with that expectation that she needed to have children,
- 14:54Speaker 4: beare children, and she even had that desire to like
- 14:56Speaker 4: want to have children of her own, but because of
- 14:58Speaker 4: her intersex condition, she was barren. She could not conceive children.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And then from there with getting smallpox and finding out
- 15:10Speaker 2: of the that she's intersects. Driven by the same unexplainable
- 15:17Speaker 2: compulsion which the duo later distance as Sadako's mind control,
- 15:24Speaker 2: he throws her into a nearby well, and of course
- 15:27Speaker 2: this is where she basically dies, which is beneath the
- 15:31Speaker 2: lodge at the resort. Believing Staca survived in the well,
- 15:37Speaker 2: her rage and psychic powers projected images onto a tape
- 15:41Speaker 2: and the two race back to the lodge. Guessing her
- 15:44Speaker 2: will is to be freed, they locate the well. Now
- 15:48Speaker 2: Chicawa finds Sadaca's remains. Chakawa's seven day deadline passes, convincing
- 15:54Speaker 2: them that the curse is broken. They find her remains
- 15:58Speaker 2: under in that well, and that's pretty much like the
- 16:02Speaker 2: Japanese version of the films is outside the tape, they
- 16:06Speaker 2: do keep the fact that she's intersex as a key point,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and that's the reason why that's the reason for her
- 16:14Speaker 2: death is because of the guy that was trying to
- 16:18Speaker 2: there's a different I mean, there's a different character that
- 16:21Speaker 2: does that, I think the movie Japanese movies, but basically
- 16:26Speaker 2: it's the same. She's intersex, guy freaks out and then
- 16:30Speaker 2: kills her. Well, of course I can see why now
- 16:32Speaker 2: they don't have that over here in America because the
- 16:34Speaker 2: American version, she's a child, just a child that has
- 16:37Speaker 2: weird psychic abilities, and her parents or her father thought
- 16:41Speaker 2: it'd be smart, just adoptive father thought'd be smart just
- 16:43Speaker 2: to kill her.
- 16:45Speaker 3: It's like everyone out.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's kind of like, you know, western like the
- 16:51Speaker 4: way they wanted to westernize it, americanize it is that
- 16:53Speaker 4: they basically turned it into another witch hunt.
- 16:56Speaker 3: So like you know, young girl with with.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Psychic abilit these that no one understands, they freak out,
- 17:02Speaker 4: they basically crucify her. And in her case, her crucifixion
- 17:06Speaker 4: or her steak that she's burned at isn't a well yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 4: and you know do we see that a lot with
- 17:13Speaker 4: these kind of like westernizations, Like instead of like keeping
- 17:16Speaker 4: it to the original source material and in some case
- 17:19Speaker 4: the original source material, we turn it into our way
- 17:22Speaker 4: of westernizing it is turning it into.
- 17:24Speaker 3: A into like a witch hunt.
- 17:26Speaker 4: And you know, oh, she's a witch burner at the steak,
- 17:30Speaker 4: drown her in a well, hang her all right, crucify her? Right?
- 17:35Speaker 4: We see this like, I mean, like Stephen like it's
- 17:38Speaker 4: to me, it was I was like, okay, So the
- 17:40Speaker 4: westernization of it basically turned it into another Stephen King's.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Carry kind of yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, except that IFO does die, but in her
- 17:49Speaker 4: that even in death, she creates her like will lives
- 17:52Speaker 4: on through her through the.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 4: So in the original but in the original story, it's
- 17:59Speaker 4: like the tape is actually her baby, Like this is
- 18:02Speaker 4: her way of giving birth to this is her child.
- 18:06Speaker 4: It's not her spirit lingering and cursing people and killing
- 18:10Speaker 4: people who watch it. No, this is actually her child.
- 18:15Speaker 4: So we learned that. We learned that she wants this
- 18:22Speaker 4: to be spread like a virus, just like smallpox. So
- 18:26Speaker 4: if you don't want to die in seven days, you
- 18:29Speaker 4: have to make another tape and share it with somebody else.
- 18:33Speaker 4: It was like her way of like inflicting that same
- 18:36Speaker 4: kind of pain that was inflicted upon her onto others,
- 18:39Speaker 4: Like she wants others to feel that pain. So that's
- 18:42Speaker 4: what the purpose of her child is. The videotape is.
- 18:46Speaker 4: You watch it, cool, you're infected. Now if you don't
- 18:48Speaker 4: want to die in seven days, you need to infect
- 18:51Speaker 4: somebody else, right, and the way you do that is
- 18:54Speaker 4: by copying the tape and giving it to somebody else
- 18:57Speaker 4: to watch.
- 18:59Speaker 3: So I think one, I'm sorry, no I was gonna say.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I think.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I think that like after you do that, you basically
- 19:06Speaker 4: become immune. So if you watch the tape again, I
- 19:08Speaker 4: guess it doesn't do it won't kill you.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I don't know if it ever really addresses that. I mean,
- 19:14Speaker 2: you can kind of assume that you'll be immune to
- 19:16Speaker 2: it because you've already watched it once.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I think in I think.
- 19:22Speaker 2: The American third, the Rings movie, the third one in American,
- 19:26Speaker 2: the American series. I think they try. I think they
- 19:30Speaker 2: try to establish that, but I don't I don't remember.
- 19:34Speaker 2: They try to play around with that idea, but I
- 19:35Speaker 2: don't remember if they were able to they're immune to it,
- 19:39Speaker 2: or if they watch it again they can just pass
- 19:41Speaker 2: the virus. They passed the virus from back and forth
- 19:44Speaker 2: between them. I have to watch the third American one again.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But the American franchise kind of plays around with that
- 19:48Speaker 2: idea a little bit.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Now.
- 19:50Speaker 2: The Japanese one, I don't know, because I've only watched
- 19:54Speaker 2: Ring one and then Ring two. I have not watched
- 19:56Speaker 2: Spiral or any of the other films. There's a lot
- 20:00Speaker 2: of Japanese films.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I watched some of the Ring, like the Ring
- 20:06Speaker 4: films and the sequels, at least the americanized versions.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And you know, honestly, I remember thinking, like, man, this
- 20:12Speaker 4: was supposed to be like back then, it was supposed
- 20:14Speaker 4: to be really scary because I didn't watch them when
- 20:16Speaker 4: when they first came out, right, I only watched maybe
- 20:18Speaker 4: some of the sequels later on and didn't really like
- 20:20Speaker 4: think much of them. But then I watched the original
- 20:22Speaker 4: movie and then the subsequent sequel, and I was like,
- 20:27Speaker 4: that's it, Like this is it.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I mean, I think, honestly, this is one of the
- 20:33Speaker 2: few times that the American remake I think is better
- 20:35Speaker 2: than the Japanese film. Yeah, I personally think because the
- 20:40Speaker 2: American remake is just the first first one, especially just so.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Good, oh good.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I would be honest, I prefer like this movie came
- 20:48Speaker 4: out around the same time another like the American at
- 20:51Speaker 4: least the americanized versions came around at the same time
- 20:53Speaker 4: as another Americanized Japanese to American film.
- 20:57Speaker 3: And that was The Grudge and love it. I love
- 21:00Speaker 3: the Grudge.
- 21:01Speaker 4: I think it's way scarier and I love the story
- 21:03Speaker 4: a lot better.
- 21:06Speaker 3: God.
- 21:06Speaker 4: The first one like was like like, oh, that was
- 21:09Speaker 4: fucked up.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Second one was terrifying.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I remember when I watched it in theaters, Like I
- 21:13Speaker 4: saw it in theaters and it was terrifying.
- 21:15Speaker 3: I was like, ooh, it's so oh oh.
- 21:19Speaker 4: I like because it's it does all these time jumps
- 21:21Speaker 4: and then like I'm.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Like what number two love and they jumped between storylines
- 21:27Speaker 2: and they tie it all together at the end. Love.
- 21:30Speaker 4: The third one like was probably the worst, but it
- 21:34Speaker 4: was also one that like another way, it was fucked
- 21:38Speaker 4: up in another way. But first was good, second was
- 21:41Speaker 4: the best, third was the worst exactly.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And the Japanese ones for the Grudge are just as good, yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 2: just as weird. They go more in detail with like
- 21:52Speaker 2: the family mother dying and the child dying by the
- 21:57Speaker 2: father and the father's rage. It gets it, yeah, yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 2: it gets more. But anyway, to finish out the rings.
- 22:05Speaker 2: The next day, the two part ways, Nasha Kawa returns
- 22:09Speaker 2: Sadako's remains to her parents. Alone in his house. Reuji
- 22:16Speaker 2: sincees his death approaching. In his final moments, he deduces
- 22:19Speaker 2: the actual charm. He calls his assistant and but he
- 22:28Speaker 2: finally realizes that, oh shit, I have to have somebody
- 22:30Speaker 2: watch the watch the tape hello, because the only reason
- 22:36Speaker 2: that Ashaka would not die because Yuji saw the video,
- 22:43Speaker 2: so he had someone else watch the video or Reugi
- 22:46Speaker 2: did not. He's like, oh shit, I'm gonna die, so
- 22:50Speaker 2: he tries to get his assistant to watch it, but
- 22:51Speaker 2: of course he dies. When his assistant answers the phone,
- 22:56Speaker 2: all they hear is him screaming without being him be
- 23:00Speaker 2: able to say anything while he died and of course,
- 23:02Speaker 2: a Chicawa calls Reugi, but his assistant picks up and
- 23:05Speaker 2: tells him, yeah, he's dead and she and he's like,
- 23:10Speaker 2: oh shit, so panicked. As his wife and child's deadline approaches,
- 23:16Speaker 2: Ashikawa tries to figure out why he was spared. Reyugi
- 23:22Speaker 2: appears in a vision and guides him to the answer.
- 23:26Speaker 2: So psychic powers combined with the smallpox virus creating sup
- 23:30Speaker 2: a paranormal virus that demands we were reproduced through copies.
- 23:39Speaker 2: So the charm is in copying the tape and showing
- 23:42Speaker 2: it to someone else within five hours left, Ashikawa races
- 23:47Speaker 2: to his wife's parents home and the tape and with
- 23:51Speaker 2: the tape in the VCR and choosing to unleash the
- 23:54Speaker 2: apocalyptic evil for the safety of his wife and child.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So basically he gets he gets her parents to watch
- 24:02Speaker 2: the video so his wife and child could survive. And
- 24:06Speaker 2: that's where the book ends, is that you find out
- 24:10Speaker 2: that's the charm. And then of course the virus was
- 24:15Speaker 2: created from smallpox mixed with Sodaco's powers, and she has
- 24:22Speaker 2: a baby. She literally has her child that she's always wanted,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and you're like, good for her, good for her, good
- 24:31Speaker 2: for her.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Babes.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Now there are other books in this series. The next
- 24:36Speaker 2: one is called Spiral, so yet Spiral Loop Birthday, which
- 24:43Speaker 2: is like a prequel, and then s and then of
- 24:46Speaker 2: course last one's called Tide. Now Tide is again not
- 24:51Speaker 2: released in the States unfortunately, and I wanted to be
- 24:55Speaker 2: released in the States. So what are you all doing?
- 24:58Speaker 2: Get to it eventually. I will go over the other
- 25:04Speaker 2: ones when I get to them. So they give you
- 25:09Speaker 2: a little spoiler. The Ring turns into something completely all
- 25:16Speaker 2: left field. It turns out that not that like. It
- 25:20Speaker 2: deals with simulations technology, Soodoco is not real. It's like
- 25:26Speaker 2: a weird She's in a simulation. She's like a weird
- 25:28Speaker 2: simulation that it's weird. It gets really bonkers as this
- 25:32Speaker 2: as the like Inspiral and Loop, So look forward to
- 25:38Speaker 2: that because that will be in the future when I
- 25:40Speaker 2: get finally get to these books, because I am on
- 25:45Speaker 2: a mission to do so. And of course watch the
- 25:47Speaker 2: movies that correlate with them, because there are some Some
- 25:50Speaker 2: of the Japanese movies.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Do correlate with the novels. Well.
- 25:53Speaker 2: The American ones do not really go off of the
- 25:57Speaker 2: novels like at all, except for maybe the first except
- 26:00Speaker 2: for kind of the first one, but of course the
- 26:03Speaker 2: first Japanese movie don't really go off the novel completely either,
- 26:05Speaker 2: So yeah, but I will dive more into the Ring
- 26:10Speaker 2: series at a later point when I finished those books, so.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Stay tuned.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I'll probably get through at least one or two of
- 26:21Speaker 2: them for the end of the year, then kind of
- 26:23Speaker 2: spread them out. But that is today's episode on the
- 26:26Speaker 2: Ring by Koji Suzuki, and catch us next time as
- 26:31Speaker 2: we start Pride months. I don't know, I don't know
- 26:37Speaker 2: if it's the Vices, is gonna before Pride month, if
- 26:39Speaker 2: is gonna before Probaly seven thirty one. Whichever way, it's
- 26:43Speaker 2: either gonna be Price Project seventy one or Walk on
- 26:45Speaker 2: the Pride. So until then, catch us then bye bye,
