Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Bible Theme: Lessons from the Wilderness
Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever wondered why so many of God's greatest servants spent time in the wilderness?
- 0:18Moses, David, Elijah, John the Baptist, even Jesus.
- 0:24This is not a coincidence.
- 0:27God often does some of His greatest work in the places we would rather avoid.
- 0:33We love mountaintops.
- 0:34We enjoy the green pastures.
- 0:36We pray for seasons of blessing and abundance.
- 0:40But throughout Scripture, God repeatedly chose another classroom, a lonely, barren wilderness.
- 0:48You see, the desert was never just an empty place.
- 0:52It was a meeting place.
- 0:54Today we're going to travel into the wilderness of Scripture and discover that some of God's
- 0:59clearest messages are heard where the landscape seems the most lifeless.
- 1:05Welcome to another edition of Traveler's Tales produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 1:09I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 1:12Every page of Scripture was lived before it was written.
- 1:16It unfolded in real places among real people, shaped by the customs and culture of the day.
- 1:22And as we step into that world, familiar passages often come alive with fresh meaning.
- 1:29Today's journey has been enriched by the insights and research of our friend, John
- 1:34Buckner.
- 1:36Our journey today begins in one of the most familiar passages in the Old Testament.
- 1:41Isaiah 40, verses 2-4, Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem.
- 1:46The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord.
- 1:52Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
- 1:58When Isaiah wrote those words, the wilderness carried tremendous meaning for the Jewish
- 2:03people.
- 2:04Their national history had been shaped there.
- 2:07God delivered Israel from Egypt, but before bringing them into the promised land, He led
- 2:13them through 40 years in the wilderness.
- 2:17The land God promised them would eventually be filled with vineyards, olive groves, and
- 2:22fertile fields.
- 2:23But scattered throughout that land were vast stretches of barren desert.
- 2:28In fact, many of those regions remain largely uninhabited even today.
- 2:34To us, a wilderness sounds like a place of emptiness.
- 2:38To the Hebrew, it became something much more.
- 2:41It became the place where God speaks.
- 2:46One of the beautiful treasures hidden in the Hebrew language is found in the word for wilderness.
- 2:52The Hebrew word is Midbar.
- 2:55What's fascinating is that this word is spelled exactly the same as the Hebrew verb meaning
- 3:01He speaks or I speak.
- 3:04Although the pronunciation changes slightly, the letters are identical.
- 3:09Ancient Jewish readers couldn't miss the connection.
- 3:13When they saw the word wilderness, they also thought of speaking.
- 3:18The wilderness was the place where God speaks.
- 3:23That insight suddenly causes many Bible passages to come alive.
- 3:30Consider the words of Hosea,
- 3:32Therefore, behold, I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness and speak comfortably
- 3:38to her.
- 3:40Did you hear it?
- 3:41God didn't bring His people into the wilderness simply to test them.
- 3:45He brought them there to talk with them.
- 3:49Again and again throughout Scripture, God met His servants in lonely places.
- 3:55Moses encountered God in the wilderness.
- 3:59Israel received God's law in the wilderness.
- 4:02David learned to trust God in the wilderness.
- 4:07Elijah heard God's still small voice after his wilderness journey.
- 4:11Even John the Baptist preached in the wilderness, preparing the way for the Messiah.
- 4:17The wilderness became God's classroom.
- 4:19In fact, the Hebrew title for the book we call Numbers is simply In the Wilderness,
- 4:25and the book begins with these words,
- 4:28And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai.
- 4:33That theme continues throughout the entire book.
- 4:36God spoke over and over and over again.
- 4:41Perhaps that's why Jesus Himself later told His weary disciples,
- 4:46Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.
- 4:52Sometimes the Lord calls us away from the noise before He can speak into our hearts.
- 4:59There's an important lesson here for us as believers.
- 5:03Most of us don't choose wilderness seasons.
- 5:07We don't pray for hardship.
- 5:09We don't ask for disappointment.
- 5:11We certainly don't enjoy loneliness, uncertainty, or suffering.
- 5:16Yet some of the deepest lessons we ever learn about God come in those very places.
- 5:23When life feels dry.
- 5:26When the future seems uncertain.
- 5:28When the landscape around you feels empty.
- 5:31Don't assume that God has abandoned you.
- 5:34It may be that He has intentionally brought you into a wilderness because He has something
- 5:40He wants to say that you could never hear amid the noise of ordinary life.
- 5:46The wilderness strips away distractions.
- 5:49It removes our self-sufficiency.
- 5:51It quiets our hearts.
- 5:53And often that's when the voice of God becomes clearest.
- 5:58Notice too that Isaiah says, Prepare ye the way of the Lord.
- 6:02Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
- 6:08Before God changes the landscape around us, He often changes the landscape within us.
- 6:14He lifts the valleys of discouragement.
- 6:17He lowers the mountains of pride.
- 6:20He straightens what sin has twisted.
- 6:24He smooths the rough places of our hearts.
- 6:27Sometimes that work only happens in the wilderness.
- 6:31So if today you find yourself walking through a difficult season, don't waste the wilderness.
- 6:39Open your Bible.
- 6:40Quiet your heart.
- 6:42Listen carefully.
- 6:44The God who spoke to Moses, to Elijah, to John the Baptist still speaks through His
- 6:50Word today.
- 6:52Your wilderness may not be evidence that God has left you.
- 6:56It may be evidence that He has drawn you near.
- 7:00Because in Scripture, the wilderness was never just a place of isolation.
- 7:06It was a place of revelation.
- 7:08And perhaps the greatest truth of all is this.
- 7:12If God has led you into the wilderness, He intends to meet you there.
