- 1:19Speaker 1: When you're talking about the Saints off season, most of
- 1:26Speaker 1: that conversation revolves around Tyler Shutt going into year two
- 1:30Speaker 1: as the starting quarterback. His first full season. You saw
- 1:34Speaker 1: what he could do as a rookie and it was
- 1:36Speaker 1: really good. Led you to four wins, four and one
- 1:42Speaker 1: record down the stretch, he put up really good numbers,
- 1:47Speaker 1: showed off the use of the legs. All that with
- 1:48Speaker 1: a mash unit around him at wide receiver end, up
- 1:51Speaker 1: front on the offensive line, and your quarterback is your franchise.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It makes a lot of sense when you have a
- 1:58Speaker 1: guy going into his second.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Years the starter.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You're looking for that jump and that's where the conversation
- 2:03Speaker 1: is going to go. But he's not the only guy.
- 2:09Speaker 1: There's another player at a franchise position that had an
- 2:13Speaker 1: awesome rookie season that's going into year two and you
- 2:17Speaker 1: could see a breakout, a jump and establishment of him
- 2:21Speaker 1: at his position that we are not talking nearly enough about,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and that is Kelvin Banks, Junior Kelvin Banks, left tackle
- 2:30Speaker 1: for the New Orleans Saints, number nine overall pick.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Started every game for you there a year ago and
- 2:35Speaker 3: was really really good.
- 2:40Speaker 1: CBS Sports put out a piece picking one under the
- 2:44Speaker 1: radar breakout candidate for every NFC team. They put Kelvin
- 2:48Speaker 1: Banks there. Now, kudos to them for not picking Tyler Shuck.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But even under the radar, I don't know if you
- 2:56Speaker 1: could really say Kelvin Banks isn't under the radar player.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Give the rookie year that he had.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus, Calvin Banks graded out as the number
- 3:11Speaker 1: twenty seven tackle in football PFF a year ago in
- 3:19Speaker 1: his rookie season, not among rookies in the NFL who
- 3:23Speaker 1: was a top thirty tackle his first year. As they
- 3:27Speaker 1: note in this CBS piece, he finished ahead of veterans
- 3:34Speaker 1: such as Dion Dawkins Ronnie Stanley, like highly regarded names
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the National Football League. When you do this, when
- 3:48Speaker 1: you pair this down just four rookies, Calvin Banks rookie
- 3:55Speaker 1: offensive tackles who played a minimum of twenty snaps or
- 4:02Speaker 1: excuse me, a minimum of twenty percent of his snaps
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the snaps, first team highest graded rookie. If you
- 4:11Speaker 1: want to eliminate snap count like snap restrictions. He graded
- 4:15Speaker 1: out second seventy three. Seventy three point five was the
- 4:22Speaker 1: grade for Calvin for Kelvin Banks a year.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Ago, and.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Man, it was it was balanced out. It wasn't just
- 4:36Speaker 1: that he was awesome in run blocking. Wasn't just that
- 4:42Speaker 1: he was awesome, you know, in past blocking he graded
- 4:50Speaker 1: out and you're at the top in all of it.
- 4:56Speaker 1: When you look at at the rookies, an offensive tackle
- 5:03Speaker 1: minimum twenty percent of the snaps. Kelvin Banks run block
- 5:17Speaker 1: grade was number two in the entire NFL among rookies
- 5:20Speaker 1: seventy six point one. His past block grade was number five.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And then as we said, overall he graded as the
- 5:28Speaker 1: top guy. And that is so refreshing because the New
- 5:34Speaker 1: Orleans Saints it's been a struggle at left tackle before
- 5:39Speaker 1: Calvin Banks. You draft Trevor Pinning, put him over there,
- 5:43Speaker 1: that doesn't work. You move him over to right tackle.
- 5:47Speaker 1: When you draft Talifuwanga put him at left tackle. He
- 5:52Speaker 1: was good, but it wasn't necessarily what you were hoping
- 5:56Speaker 1: for at the highest level. You move him over to
- 6:02Speaker 1: right tackle. Then you alsoly move Trevor Pinning to guard.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You send him packing at trade deadline. You draft Calvin Banks.
- 6:10Speaker 1: He does what he does for you in year one,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and now you go into year two, and there's a
- 6:14Speaker 1: lot of reasons to be excited about him in year two.
- 6:17Speaker 1: He met with the media back on June fourth, and
- 6:19Speaker 1: one of these things is this is Kelvin banks first
- 6:22Speaker 1: full NFL offseason, and he talks about how big that's.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Been for him and his development going into year two.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been great, especially because I can fully focus
- 6:33Speaker 4: on football and you know, like they say, not running
- 6:35Speaker 4: forties and not doing all these calling jokes and stuff
- 6:37Speaker 4: like that. It's been good, especially like getting the full
- 6:40Speaker 4: off season, get into a full workout training regiment and
- 6:44Speaker 4: stay on it consistently. Base are real good, especially making
- 6:46Speaker 4: sure I get my body back right.
- 6:47Speaker 1: He's there, Hey, you're not training for the fortymore. You're
- 6:50Speaker 1: not doing track workouts, right, cone drills, none of that.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You've got your spot. You performed great. You have a
- 6:59Speaker 1: full NFL offseason, your first one test, he said, get
- 7:02Speaker 1: the body right and be ready to go.
- 7:06Speaker 3: The other thing that I really like for Calvin.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Banks is what the Saints did at left guard. It
- 7:15Speaker 1: was a revolving door in his rookie year playing next
- 7:19Speaker 1: to He played next to a revolving door.
- 7:21Speaker 3: We just talked about Trevor Pinning.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You kicked him down to guard and then you send
- 7:23Speaker 1: him packing at the trade deadline.
- 7:30Speaker 3: You went out.
- 7:30Speaker 1: You brought in a veteran like David Edwards. Oh yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 1: he's getting up there in age. That's fine, but that's
- 7:36Speaker 1: a leader who carries all the intangls when we've heard
- 7:40Speaker 1: we've heard Kellen Moore rave about David Edwards and what
- 7:45Speaker 1: he brings to the communication level. He's a quarterback out
- 7:49Speaker 1: there calling things out. Just go watch the tape of Buffalo, right,
- 7:52Speaker 1: That's what Kellen Moore said. So we know that you
- 7:54Speaker 1: bring in that veteran to play next to Calvin Banks,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and it's something that he highlighted. His comfortable playing next
- 8:01Speaker 1: to Edwards so far, even just to Ota is when
- 8:03Speaker 1: there's no contact, it's been great.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Man. He's a great communicator, so he communicates a lot
- 8:09Speaker 4: throughout the players and even during players after play who's
- 8:12Speaker 4: always communicating. So it's been a real easy process of
- 8:14Speaker 4: being able to plug him plug plug him in at
- 8:16Speaker 4: left guard, and we just jailed like that for.
- 8:19Speaker 1: All the talk about the help that the Saints got
- 8:22Speaker 1: Tyler Shuck.
- 8:23Speaker 3: That's a massive help that they.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Just got what is hopefully their franchise left tackling Kelvin
- 8:28Speaker 1: Banks because you just heard him talk about communication all that.
- 8:33Speaker 1: David Edwards is the other thing is he's durable. He's
- 8:37Speaker 1: been very durable in his career. So hopefully you can
- 8:40Speaker 1: get a couple full seasons out of Banks and Edward's
- 8:44Speaker 1: playing next to each other and you have a very
- 8:46Speaker 1: formidable left side of your offensive line. But that's also
- 8:49Speaker 1: just a veteran that can bring Calvin Banks along, take
- 8:54Speaker 1: him under his wing, and really teach him the.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Ways of the NFL. You have to love that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And lastly, Banks talked about just his overall comfort, comfort
- 9:07Speaker 1: level with the offensive line unit that they've brought in
- 9:10Speaker 1: and now going into year two.
- 9:12Speaker 4: The comfortability with the old line, and I feel like
- 9:14Speaker 4: it's always been that's always been a steady face. I
- 9:16Speaker 4: mean since coming in as a rookie the first day here.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Guys make it make it easy for you to kind
- 9:22Speaker 4: of come into our brotherhood and come into a situation
- 9:25Speaker 4: where you know you're gonna work hard, but also you
- 9:27Speaker 4: know everybody's gonna have fun and You're gonna be a
- 9:29Speaker 4: tight group. So it's definitely a comfortable, comfortable situation to
- 9:32Speaker 4: be in for sure.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Calvin Banks, New Orleans Saints.
- 9:36Speaker 1: They've wrapped up OTAs they will turn their attention out
- 9:40Speaker 1: to mandatory mini camp that gets underway on Tuesday of
- 9:45Speaker 1: next week.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Could be a really big year for the Saints offense.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Calvin Banks, he's a franchise player too, He's part of
- 9:53Speaker 1: that looking for a big year. Two out of the
- 9:55Speaker 1: former ninth overall pick. All right, we're gonna grab a break.
- 9:59Speaker 1: We will come back on the other side. We still
- 10:02Speaker 1: have just a lot to get to you. There's a
- 10:03Speaker 1: couple of other baseball things I wanted to touch on.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We got the NBA Finals game number five, Stanley.
- 10:08Speaker 3: All of those things.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Paul, our guy, Paul has been locked in to the
- 10:12Speaker 1: Cup finals, like he has been going home and grinding
- 10:15Speaker 1: Cup finals. So you might even get to a little
- 10:17Speaker 1: bit of that as well. We'll do and ask us
- 10:19Speaker 1: or something like that to wrap up the segments. So
- 10:21Speaker 1: if you have questions get him into the value for
- 10:23Speaker 1: YouTube chat you can tweet there were excuse me, just
- 10:24Speaker 1: the YouTube chat. You can tweet them at me at
- 10:28Speaker 1: Musso Matthew. You can send him into the text line
- 10:30Speaker 1: two two five.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Excuse me.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Four, the number you would call for the station. If
- 10:39Speaker 1: you have any questions, we'll kick those round to close
- 10:41Speaker 1: out the show as well.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Our three continues next on Afar
