Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Good Lord, it's a new show.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This week we've got Bryce Stubbs in the studio, a
- 0:09Speaker 2: Montana kid who just won the Food Network's 100 cooks
- 0:13Speaker 2: and walked away with a nice little chunk of scratch.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We got Colorado Bears are on the tears. Let's try
- 0:22Speaker 2: to make a rhyme.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Colorado Bears are on the tears. Or are they? Giannis
- 0:29Speaker 1: will tell us.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's a better than ever time to get that suppressor
- 0:32Speaker 2: you've been looking for. Trump generated something of a national
- 0:37Speaker 2: eye roll by renaming Lake Ontario. Angler of the Year
- 0:42Speaker 2: Trey McKinney joins us live here and more.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But now on to our news.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Our news.
- 0:51Speaker 1: What's first up in our news, Yanni? Tear it away.
- 0:54Speaker 4: No, it says Steve's kids question.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Oh, it's very quick.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Driving to Grouse Hunt last night, my kid said to me,
- 1:00Speaker 2: 11 years old, he said, if you froze a person.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And cut him open with all the blood be where
- 1:08Speaker 1: it belonged. That's all. Go on.
- 1:14Speaker 5: You didn't have an answer for him?
- 1:15Speaker 1: I told him, yeah.
- 1:16Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Be right where it belonged.
- 1:18Speaker 6: I'll ask my brother on that. He just did a
- 1:20Speaker 6: big cadaver thing.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's right where it belonged. I already thought it through.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Go ahead, Yanni.
- 1:25Speaker 4: I'm going to text him. This American Life did a
- 1:27Speaker 4: real good story recently about when freezing people and keeping
- 1:31Speaker 4: them around forever until medical advances caught up to bringing
- 1:34Speaker 4: them back alive. Remember that in the 70s?
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's still a thing, man.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Maybe, but they did a nice long story on it.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Very entertaining.
- 1:43Speaker 2: There's dudes now, because that's expensive, there's a cheap version
- 1:46Speaker 2: and one of the guys that many people, you know
- 1:49Speaker 2: they don't know who invented Bitcoin? I didn't know that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: My friend Ben Wallace wrote a wonderful book about trying
- 1:58Speaker 2: to unmask Yes, the mysterious Mr.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Nakamoto. No one knows who invented Bitcoin.
- 2:03Speaker 2: He has billions and billions in Bitcoin that has never
- 2:06Speaker 2: been tapped into. One of the guys that some people
- 2:12Speaker 2: think invented Bitcoin just had his brain froze trying to
- 2:17Speaker 2: save money. So he's anticipating major medical advancements. Not that
- 2:25Speaker 2: you just reanimate his body, but you thaw his brain
- 2:28Speaker 2: out stick.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It in some dude i don't know yeah i don't
- 2:31Speaker 1: know playing a long game.
- 2:33Speaker 4: A nice strong night 20 year old uh what do
- 2:37Speaker 4: i have from uh my news uh whitetail habitat in
- 2:41Speaker 4: wisconsin work kansas scouting in wyoming elk uh two days
- 2:44Speaker 4: in late july in wisconsin mostly spraying buckthorn which is
- 2:50Speaker 4: this invasive that i'm uh It was funny. I thought
- 2:53Speaker 4: I was going to have like a little bit to
- 2:54Speaker 4: battle when I started this project. And as soon as
- 2:57Speaker 4: the sunlight hit the forest floor, it went bananas. And
- 3:01Speaker 4: now I've got like 10 acres of it.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And why do people hate it? Buckthorn.
- 3:08Speaker 4: It's like any of these invasives. They just take over
- 3:10Speaker 4: and they don't let the stuff grow that you want
- 3:13Speaker 4: to grow.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And nothing wants to eat it. No. Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 4: But I'm happy to report my dad's been back a
- 3:19Speaker 4: month later since I was there. And he reported there's
- 3:23Speaker 4: a lot of dead buckthorn. So my work had results.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Like you're murdering it.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't know how I missed this, though, growing
- 3:33Speaker 4: up in Michigan. Maybe you have memories of this, but
- 3:37Speaker 4: I don't have memories of sweating the way that I
- 3:40Speaker 4: sweat now when I go to Wisconsin to work. To
- 3:42Speaker 4: the point where my rubber gloves, when I would take
- 3:45Speaker 4: them off after spraying a full backpack and walking around
- 3:48Speaker 4: in the middle of the day, I could pour the
- 3:51Speaker 4: sweat out of them. There's a video on my Instagram.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Kids don't sweat.
- 3:54Speaker 4: You think that's what it is?
- 3:55Speaker 2: I remember discovering that I could sweat throwing hay bales.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And then you're only aware of it because all the
- 4:02Speaker 1: dust stuck to you. But no, you don't sweat as
- 4:04Speaker 1: a kid. Skinny little shits don't sweat. I'll wear a
- 4:09Speaker 1: shirt that says that on it. Any of those shits
- 4:12Speaker 1: don't sweat.
- 4:13Speaker 4: The other highlight from Wisconsin was I finally took the
- 4:16Speaker 4: time to hang some vines and make like legit mock scrapes.
- 4:21Speaker 4: You familiar with this? Like hanging a grapevine?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 4: The internet says that that's the best thing. You can
- 4:27Speaker 4: use other, say you don't live in a place, say
- 4:29Speaker 4: you live in a place where there are no grapevines,
- 4:31Speaker 4: you can use other branches.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You mean you're putting in a licking branch?
- 4:35Speaker 4: Yes, but instead of using a oak licking branch.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Just hang a vine.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Hang a vine. And I did them, you know, 20
- 4:42Speaker 4: yards from two different stands, killed all the... you know,
- 4:46Speaker 4: stuff that was living underneath it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: God, you were killing off stuff all the time, man.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Oh, yes. I'm such a, I get, become more and
- 4:54Speaker 4: more of a fan of herbicide and cutting trees down
- 4:57Speaker 4: by the day.
- 4:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Because when you kill stuff, the stuff that you want
- 5:01Speaker 4: comes back.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I understand.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Anyways, did a couple, did three of those. Two out
- 5:07Speaker 4: of the three that same night had deer activity on them.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Pretty amazing you put some buck man juice down i
- 5:14Speaker 4: didn't put any well yeah i did that i peed
- 5:17Speaker 4: in the scrapes for sure but uh yeah they're just
- 5:19Speaker 4: going up there and like whatever it is are you
- 5:21Speaker 4: kidding me no they see it you know and they're
- 5:25Speaker 4: just like they go over there and attract the day
- 5:27Speaker 4: you did it yeah that night i had two visits
- 5:30Speaker 4: i did i made three and two out of the
- 5:32Speaker 4: three got hit that night that's incredible does and young
- 5:36Speaker 4: bucks i haven't had a big.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Something about that yeah height and position that they they're
- 5:43Speaker 2: into it yeah you know you hear similar stuff about
- 5:47Speaker 2: gruff grouse in a drumming log yep right they're like
- 5:50Speaker 2: oh that's everything you know i mean that's right it's
- 5:54Speaker 2: like i need to be able to see a certain
- 5:55Speaker 2: distance it needs to be a certain height and they
- 5:57Speaker 2: just right are on it and a licking branch she's
- 6:00Speaker 2: like oh sweet licking branch makes.
- 6:02Speaker 5: You realize they're paying more attention to like detail like
- 6:04Speaker 5: what's around them than you think they do yeah for
- 6:07Speaker 5: sure like that's like shows up at like a sign
- 6:10Speaker 5: post that's really interesting.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah even though there was some dude with his hands
- 6:15Speaker 4: all over it and ladders and cannons driving around spraying
- 6:20Speaker 4: herbicide they're like oh no matter i like that thing
- 6:24Speaker 4: i'm gonna rub rub my forehead on it um Middle
- 6:28Speaker 4: of August, Brent and I went to Kansas and hung
- 6:32Speaker 4: 10 multi-trail cameras on three different properties that we're going
- 6:37Speaker 4: to hunt. Now, we got these three different properties through
- 6:39Speaker 4: a friend of his who's... I don't want to say
- 6:42Speaker 4: an out... It's a very, like... It's an outfitter, but
- 6:44Speaker 4: he's kind of a DIY kind of guy where... He's
- 6:48Speaker 4: going to have the spots for you. He's going to
- 6:49Speaker 4: put you up, but you're kind of on your own
- 6:51Speaker 4: for the hunting. He'll say, yeah, go check that out.
- 6:55Speaker 4: We see deer down here, but you're not going to
- 6:57Speaker 4: get dropped off at the blind. He's not going to
- 7:00Speaker 4: hang grapevines for you, that kind of stuff.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It was like that time Yumi did that turkey hunt
- 7:05Speaker 1: in Florida.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yes, exactly. You basically get the property.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, figure it out. Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 4: So Brent and I, we basically had one full day there.
- 7:14Speaker 4: hot as hell there too. Just like Wisconsin is like
- 7:16Speaker 4: 95 and, um, and, and hot, uh, hung 10 cameras,
- 7:22Speaker 4: speed scouting it, just trying to figure out, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 4: major crossings, um, pinch points, funnels, whatever, um, did okay.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I think, uh, if you, if you don't mind, Phil,
- 7:34Speaker 4: go ahead and show, show the viewers what we've seen,
- 7:38Speaker 4: what we've got so far. Doesn't matter.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Pull one up.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah, any of the ones from the trail cameras.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Yeah, hold on here.
- 7:44Speaker 4: We don't have a Kansas Giant yet. But there's this guy.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Dude, I'll take it.
- 7:49Speaker 4: And he's got like a bonus. You can see, I
- 7:52Speaker 4: don't know if you call it an extra. Keep kind
- 7:54Speaker 4: of rolling through him, Phil. On his left antler, there's
- 7:58Speaker 4: like an extra brow tie.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Oh.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You know what I always ask myself, any buck I see?
- 8:05Speaker 2: I say, but is it as big as the buck
- 8:07Speaker 2: that's been laying in my yard?
- 8:09Speaker 1: No.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Your neighbors showed me a picture of that thing. Holy cow.
- 8:13Speaker 1: My daughter had to mow around it. Yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 4: He's a bruiser.
- 8:16Speaker 1: She had to mow around the box. Are you serious?
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's huge. Unbelievable.
- 8:20Speaker 4: She smowed around it?
- 8:22Speaker 1: This buck is like, hey, what's up, guys?
- 8:25Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Jimmy's all trying to plot how he.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Can drive it out of city limits.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Scare him into Pat's yard where he's outside.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Of city limits.
- 8:34Speaker 2: You know, I could tell so many funny stories about
- 8:36Speaker 2: him and that buck. He's obsessed with this buck. He's
- 8:38Speaker 2: got no path forward, though. Well, you need to bring
- 8:42Speaker 2: in a picture of this buck.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It's like giant drop time. Anyways, go on.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Well, this is what we got so far, which is,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you know, this is actually a different one. That's a
- 8:52Speaker 4: 10 point. It's been running with the funky guy. Which
- 8:55Speaker 4: are both like, if I saw either of them in Wisconsin,
- 8:58Speaker 4: I'd be flinging an arrow immediately. But Brent keeps telling me, Yanni,
- 9:02Speaker 4: I could shoot those bucks in Arkansas. I'm like, okay. Well,
- 9:06Speaker 4: you're going to be there with me, so you can
- 9:08Speaker 4: tell me which one to shoot or not shoot. Phil,
- 9:10Speaker 4: show the picture of the taxidermied bucks. This is what's available.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Is it bigger than the buck in my yard?
- 9:18Speaker 4: I don't know. I haven't seen the buck in your yard.
- 9:20Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Man, those G3s.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:26Speaker 4: And there's one filled with two of them. Oh, yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 4: there's another one.
- 9:28Speaker 7: No.
- 9:29Speaker 5: A lot of high and tight bucks on them.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Yeah, they definitely have. Yeah, you're not going to get
- 9:35Speaker 4: a big spread credit out of those. Yeah, look at
- 9:38Speaker 4: those two boys.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Whose place is that? That's a nice place.
- 9:42Speaker 4: That's where we're– that basement is where Brent and I
- 9:45Speaker 4: are going to be sleeping during our Kansas hunt. So
- 9:47Speaker 4: we're heading there in– Okay, but here's the, I don't
- 9:50Speaker 4: know if this is the highlight.
- 9:51Speaker 2: For you people just listening, Yanni's showing pictures of bucks
- 9:53Speaker 2: that most dudes would be real excited to get.
- 9:55Speaker 1: With astounding G3s.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Are you hunting the rut there or what?
- 9:58Speaker 4: I'm going to hunt the last week of August.
- 10:00Speaker 1: October. Pre-rut. Yeah.
- 10:05Speaker 4: When I came home, though, from this trip, I kind
- 10:08Speaker 4: of felt like when you were in the hospital and
- 10:11Speaker 4: you had... Lime.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Just problems.
- 10:14Speaker 4: And yeah. And you had possibly like giardia. And I
- 10:18Speaker 4: forget all the things that had compounded. Because you had
- 10:21Speaker 4: some kind of skin irritant as well.
- 10:22Speaker 1: No. Yeah.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I had a whole list of issues. But I had,
- 10:26Speaker 2: it was like a colon infection.
- 10:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Long story.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Long story.
- 10:34Speaker 1: But it had compounded.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It was a series of events that led me to
- 10:37Speaker 1: be there.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And I was at the Jewish hospital in New York.
- 10:42Speaker 2: And when I finally was getting checked out, I always
- 10:45Speaker 2: remember the doctor was leaving the door. It was like
- 10:47Speaker 2: a movie scene. She's leaving the door and turns to
- 10:50Speaker 2: me and says, stay away from pigs.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Right, because didn't you get poison ivy or poison oak
- 10:57Speaker 4: from the pigs?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 8: Right, right, right.
- 10:59Speaker 4: So you can hear that story on probably several different
- 11:02Speaker 4: old media podcasts. Find it somehow.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I left there.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Came home, I was thinking about you, because I'm like,
- 11:11Speaker 4: I wonder if Steve's ever had this many skinny irritations
- 11:14Speaker 4: at once. Mosquito bites, tick bites, chiggers, poison ivy, and
- 11:18Speaker 4: then on top of all that, a wicked common cold
- 11:21Speaker 4: that shut me down for three, four, five days.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Let me see them chiggers.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Well, they're gone now. This is 10 days ago.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Did any of that stuff get your scroll? A little bit.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I had that patch of poison ivy here. Uh, not,
- 11:34Speaker 4: not scroll, but in the general scroll area, I definitely
- 11:37Speaker 4: had some, um, tick bites, the seed ticks.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Hopefully they'll all be gone by, uh, by end of October.
- 11:45Speaker 1: What kind of ticks?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Little seed ticks.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You'd be wise to go listen to that episode we
- 11:51Speaker 2: did on, on, um, alpha gal syndrome, the whole dedicated
- 11:55Speaker 2: episode on alpha gal.
- 11:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I haven't listened to it yet.
- 11:58Speaker 1: No, it'll scare you. All right. Or not.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Last but not least, leaving in two days for my
- 12:04Speaker 4: Wyoming elk hunt.
- 12:06Speaker 1: It's exciting. What's the weather looking like?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Hot?
- 12:09Speaker 4: It's hot this weekend, then it's going to cool down.
- 12:11Speaker 4: It's going to start getting into like highs of 70,
- 12:14Speaker 4: maybe low 70s, and then lows 30 to 40.
- 12:18Speaker 2: No one believes me, but the other morning our roof
- 12:20Speaker 2: had frost on it.
- 12:22Speaker 4: It's probably the morning that my thermometer read 37.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Oh, because everybody keeps telling me my thermometer said 44.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know. I must live in a
- 12:28Speaker 1: weird little hole. I don't know. The big buck brings
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the cold. I don't know what it is.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I'm a little bit nervous. Here's what I got going on.
- 12:38Speaker 4: I'm two days out. I still have a lot of
- 12:40Speaker 4: packing and planning to do. I never made it there
- 12:42Speaker 4: to do any scouting. So the first couple of days
- 12:45Speaker 4: are going to be all just driving around as much
- 12:48Speaker 4: as I can in the Cam Am and just road scouting.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Glassing early and late, but basically figuring out my access,
- 12:55Speaker 4: figuring out how long it takes to get from A
- 12:56Speaker 4: to B. and just zipping around, zipping around until I
- 12:59Speaker 4: have an idea of, you know, like I know the place.
- 13:04Speaker 4: The one thing I will say, which I'm very happy
- 13:06Speaker 4: about this, I do think is maybe the most important
- 13:09Speaker 4: is that my broadhead tipped arrows are flying good. And
- 13:12Speaker 4: right now I would shoot at an elk at 50 yards.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Good. I'm ready. Which means 50, you'll shoot an elk
- 13:21Speaker 1: at 59.
- 13:21Speaker 6: No.
- 13:24Speaker 4: You know, I was shooting with a guy the other
- 13:26Speaker 4: day at the house. We have a little 3D course
- 13:30Speaker 4: set up there and we're shooting. And he asked me
- 13:32Speaker 4: the question, he's like, how far, how hard would you shoot?
- 13:35Speaker 4: We were actually shooting at a farther range, but I
- 13:37Speaker 4: think we were shooting at 60 or 65.
- 13:38Speaker 1: That's what I like your range.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And I had a really nice group going, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 4: like a seven, eight inch group at that range. And
- 13:45Speaker 4: he's like, what would you shoot him at? I'm like 50.
- 13:48Speaker 4: He's like, really? Right now, look at you, what you're doing.
- 13:51Speaker 4: You're telling me perfect conditions, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:54Speaker 4: And in the moment I thought, well, yeah, maybe he's right.
- 13:57Speaker 4: You know, the wind's not blowing. The bull elk doesn't
- 13:59Speaker 4: know I'm there and everything's perfect. My heart rate's not up. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 4: I could probably send it. But then later that night
- 14:06Speaker 4: I was laying in bed and I was thinking, no,
- 14:08Speaker 4: you don't want to send it because you take those
- 14:12Speaker 4: I don't want to call them chip shots, but they're
- 14:13Speaker 4: shots that you're absolutely 100% sure in, 50 yards and under,
- 14:17Speaker 4: not 59, because you have to think about five minutes
- 14:20Speaker 4: later when that sucker's running off with one stuck way
- 14:24Speaker 4: too far back or in his ass.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But it's way too much arrow showing.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like that's why you don't take the 59-yarder.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Or I won't. I had this conversation the other day
- 14:36Speaker 1: with someone who was telling me, man, guys online. I'm like...
- 14:41Speaker 1: You ain't online.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 14:43Speaker 1: You're in the woods.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 4: And again, you know, I'm human. I make mistakes. And again,
- 14:49Speaker 4: at 60 plus yards, like that arrow takes a while
- 14:53Speaker 4: to get there. And those critters can just take one
- 14:55Speaker 4: step and it goes from being a perfect center of
- 14:57Speaker 4: the lungs to being back or whatever.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Dude.
- 15:02Speaker 2: When you come back and tell me, man, I passed
- 15:03Speaker 2: up a beautiful bull at 51, I'll be all ears.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'll be all ears. I'll be all ears. All right,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Nate Mason. Nate Mason came over.
- 15:16Speaker 2: To us in the podcast space from one of our companies,
- 15:22Speaker 2: FHF Gear.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Makers are the greatest vinyl harness on the planet.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Makers are the greatest vinyl harness on the planet.
- 15:28Speaker 2: He was on the same, before he came over to
- 15:30Speaker 2: the podcast team, he was on the same floor as
- 15:32Speaker 2: this studio, just a different wing of the office.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Yeah, the wing none of y'all visit.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I'm down there all the time. You are, but everyone
- 15:39Speaker 1: else doesn't. No, me and Yanni are down all the time.
- 15:41Speaker 1: We're just not welcome guests. Oh, no, you're welcome. No,
- 15:43Speaker 1: because we're like, hey, can you guys sew this? Well,
- 15:47Speaker 1: usually it's like a buoy or something. Yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 6: Hey, can you sew the spearfishing wetsuit for me?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Hey, can you make me, you guys got like a
- 15:55Speaker 2: few days where you can make me a holder for
- 15:57Speaker 2: my underwater flashlight?
- 15:59Speaker 1: Shit like that.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Yeah, the guy who was managing Paul's schedule said no,
- 16:02Speaker 6: but Paul said yes.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Anyways, so Nate was involved. Nate's going to, he's going to,
- 16:07Speaker 1: he's going to bring the worlds together.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Yep.
- 16:10Speaker 6: So worked there for two years and a big chunk
- 16:13Speaker 6: of that time spent giving input on the FHF Apex
- 16:16Speaker 6: bag that we just released. Um, so you go to
- 16:19Speaker 6: the website, check it out, but we'll give you the
- 16:21Speaker 6: spiel here that I would give to you at a
- 16:23Speaker 6: trade show. If you walked in headliner, it's going to
- 16:27Speaker 6: cost 400 bucks.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Big.
- 16:30Speaker 6: And we knew that going into it. Cause you make
- 16:32Speaker 6: anything physically large.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 6: You make anything physically large in America by citizens of
- 16:38Speaker 6: the United States. It will cost you so much money
- 16:40Speaker 6: and we're committed like FHF is committed to that.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Um, and so we knew it was going to.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Be super expensive.
- 16:44Speaker 6: And the question that we wrestled with was how do
- 16:46Speaker 6: you make, how do you justify a $ 400 price tag?
- 16:49Speaker 6: And what we landed on is a backpack that you
- 16:51Speaker 6: don't just pull out of your closet for a seven-day
- 16:53Speaker 6: elk hunt. It's a backpack you can use year-round in
- 16:56Speaker 6: multiple configurations. Everything from no waist belt, throwing it into
- 17:00Speaker 6: an overhead in your plane, to loading it on an
- 17:05Speaker 6: XO K4 frame and.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Hauling out an elk quarter.
- 17:07Speaker 6: It does everything in between.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Can I tell you something? See this one right here?
- 17:12Speaker 1: Guess what I had in here last night?
- 17:15Speaker 4: Grouse.
- 17:16Speaker 1: 10... grouse and a laptop.
- 17:22Speaker 5: That's why your charger doesn't work anymore.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You guys had a good night. Because I like to
- 17:28Speaker 1: do big screen trail cam checking. Big screen. So I
- 17:34Speaker 1: was getting a couple.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Things out of the woods and I was like, I'm
- 17:35Speaker 2: going to have my laptop with me because I'm not
- 17:37Speaker 2: patient enough to wait. So I had my laptop in
- 17:40Speaker 2: there and me and my kids had our dead grouses
- 17:42Speaker 2: in there.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Big bang boom.
- 17:45Speaker 2: But mine has a custom sticker, meat eater laboratories.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's prototype special.
- 17:49Speaker 4: What species of grouse did you guys get into so well?
- 17:52Speaker 1: How technical do you want me to get?
- 17:55Speaker 4: Super.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Are you like an ornithological society man? No. In that case,
- 17:58Speaker 1: then they were duskies.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Duskies.
- 18:01Speaker 1: If you're just a regular blue collar guy, blue grouse.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Got it.
- 18:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 4: It's a nice haul.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Go check that bag out, fhfgear.com. All got bigger than that.
- 18:10Speaker 1: All got bigger than that. How many did you end with?
- 18:12Speaker 1: We had four hunters.
- 18:13Speaker 4: 12?
- 18:15Speaker 1: Me, three kids. That's a good day.
- 18:20Speaker 6: Anyhow, if you want to check it out, FHFgear.com It's
- 18:25Speaker 6: a big price tag, but you'll use it not only
- 18:27Speaker 6: for years, but throughout the entire year.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's good. That's all you're going to say about it?
- 18:34Speaker 1: It speaks for itself. Grab one and show it.
- 18:38Speaker 6: Pass that one behind you, Bryce. That's one on a
- 18:41Speaker 6: K4 frame. If you look at the left You know, no,
- 18:44Speaker 6: give me the one on the left.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Sorry, give me the one on the left. Why's Bryce
- 18:47Speaker 1: got to do it? This sucker. He's a chef.
- 18:53Speaker 6: This is how this bad Larry's going to come. Okay,
- 18:56Speaker 6: no waist belt, straps, pad, kind of your everyday 24-hour,
- 19:01Speaker 6: 36-hour pack.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It'd be great.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Then you can take that sucker, pan over to Steve,
- 19:07Speaker 6: and throw your apex belt on.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Another whip pan. I got mine clipped behind. Yep.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Throw your Apex belt on there, and now you have
- 19:16Speaker 6: some load-bearing capability. You got your hip deal going on, E4s,
- 19:19Speaker 6: whatever you want.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Keep your bullets in these little pockets when you're grouse hunting.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yep.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Throw your grouse in there, your laptop, whatever you want.
- 19:25Speaker 6: And then, Bryce, we got the K4 version.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Same bag.
- 19:29Speaker 6: You strip all the shoulder pads off, the waist belt,
- 19:31Speaker 6: all that stuff, and you can mount this sucker.
- 19:36Speaker 4: On an XO K4 frame.
- 19:38Speaker 6: And it works just like it would any other Western
- 19:40Speaker 6: meat hauling pack. It's about 2200 cubic inches. Perfect for
- 19:45Speaker 6: truck hunting, day hunting, maybe two nights, one night, two nights.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Um, yeah it's great love that thing made in america
- 19:53Speaker 1: thanks man yep all right phil cue your news.
- 20:03Speaker 5: What was that uh that was a pigeon delivering a
- 20:07Speaker 5: letter and putting it through a mail slot.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Well, I wouldn't have gotten that.
- 20:11Speaker 5: He's been using that one for weeks. Those are the
- 20:13Speaker 5: best sound effects, the ones you have to explain to people,
- 20:15Speaker 5: just like jokes.
- 20:17Speaker 1: This is your news presented by Banish.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Speaking of suppressors here, Banish, speaking of suppressors, at the
- 20:25Speaker 2: end of the show we have an update from Silencer
- 20:27Speaker 2: Central on changes to the NFA.
- 20:29Speaker 1: You don't need to know what that means. You can
- 20:33Speaker 1: listen to the whole story.
- 20:34Speaker 2: It's fascinating if you're a policy guy, if you like
- 20:36Speaker 2: the details. The long and short of it is probably
- 20:40Speaker 2: In the history of America, this is going to sound bold.
- 20:48Speaker 2: At the end of the episode, you'll hear the whole interview.
- 20:49Speaker 2: In the history of America, now is probably definitely the
- 20:55Speaker 2: best time that has ever happened and could become.
- 21:00Speaker 1: The best. What am I trying to say?
- 21:03Speaker 2: Undoubtedly, right now is the best moment ever to get
- 21:06Speaker 2: a suppressor if you've been thinking about a suppressor. Because
- 21:10Speaker 2: the federal government regulatory changes. There's a chance it'll get better.
- 21:16Speaker 2: There seems to be a better chance it's going to
- 21:18Speaker 2: get worse.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Depending on the state you live in.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Depending on the state you live in. Or not.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Or following.
- 21:25Speaker 2: We'll hit it at the end.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Listen to the interview. Just listen in the end. Listen
- 21:32Speaker 1: in the end. Listen in the end.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Politically, politically in this country.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Friends of the suppressors are in power. The enemies of
- 21:44Speaker 2: the suppressors will follow on their heels. But just listen
- 21:49Speaker 2: to the whole damn thing later. The generator update is this.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I spelled out on a news show this problem. I
- 21:54Speaker 2: have a generator that needs an exorcism. The greatest mechanical
- 21:59Speaker 2: minds in Ketchikan, Alaska have not been able to solve
- 22:03Speaker 2: this problem.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I laid it all out.
- 22:07Speaker 2: This is Insider for you people that listened and participated.
- 22:13Speaker 2: You built the graph.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Can you explain the graph?
- 22:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Basically, we aggregated comments from the email, the inbox, which
- 22:19Speaker 6: always feel free to write in, and the YouTube comments.
- 22:22Speaker 6: And we've got two columns. We've got, there's five top
- 22:27Speaker 6: suggestions on how to exercise this generator. And there's a
- 22:33Speaker 6: differentiation between the YouTube folks, the YouTube mechanics. and the
- 22:37Speaker 6: email mechanics.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But really, there's two options. Could you put more faith
- 22:41Speaker 1: in the YouTube guy or the email guy?
- 22:42Speaker 6: Well, that's what I want to find out. I don't
- 22:44Speaker 6: know who's a more educated populace on generators.
- 22:49Speaker 1: The YouTube comments... What do you think about.
- 22:51Speaker 7: That, Bryce?
- 22:53Speaker 8: I would say email. If you take the time to
- 22:55Speaker 8: type out an email.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You're smarter?
- 22:56Speaker 4: You're smarter.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You know what I found?
- 22:57Speaker 8: Anyone can comment on a YouTube video.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Many mechanics who wrote in apologized for their grammar, which
- 23:04Speaker 6: I don't care. But I found that the better suggestions
- 23:06Speaker 6: came from the guys who had poor grammar. I started
- 23:09Speaker 6: not trusting in the guys who wrote real.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, because they spent their life wrenching that stuff. I agree.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I agree. So anyways. Yeah, they're not like keyboard. They're
- 23:17Speaker 1: not keyboard dudes.
- 23:18Speaker 8: They probably don't even have an email. They just go
- 23:20Speaker 8: on YouTube.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, these dudes, they got a dip packed and they're wrenching.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Turn that down or just spell right.
- 23:25Speaker 6: They vote that it's the low oil level slash pressure sensor.
- 23:30Speaker 6: And the email guys think it's the fuel cap or
- 23:33Speaker 6: tank vent is clogged up.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I'm trying them both, dude. I'm not even going to
- 23:38Speaker 1: find out which it was.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Is it in town getting fixed or is it still there?
- 23:42Speaker 1: It's been to town.
- 23:43Speaker 2: This is a well-traveled generator. I got more money into
- 23:46Speaker 2: shipping this generator back and forth.
- 23:49Speaker 1: When I say I, I mean my co-owners. We got
- 23:51Speaker 1: more money in shipping this generator around than it would
- 23:53Speaker 1: cost to buy the damn generator.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Aren't you going back there this fall?
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's out there right now.
- 23:58Speaker 5: But you're going back to Met?
- 23:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm doing all this junk.
- 24:01Speaker 8: What kind of generator is it?
- 24:03Speaker 1: It's a Honda EU7000.
- 24:06Speaker 5: The big boy.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Big dog.
- 24:09Speaker 6: So those were number ones and two. Number three was
- 24:13Speaker 6: the cominder sensor. The fourth recommended was overheating and thermal sensor.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And the fifth was the ignition coil.
- 24:20Speaker 6: So there's your hit list.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I like these guys on the ignition coil. They're saying
- 24:23Speaker 2: take a heat gun and just speed it along. Heat
- 24:26Speaker 2: the ignition coil. Instead of waiting four hours for it
- 24:30Speaker 2: to shut off, heat it with the heat gun. Mainly
- 24:34Speaker 2: the reason we're getting into this is thank you.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Thank you. Yes.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Thank you for all this feedback.
- 24:41Speaker 1: It means the world. Bison skull discovery. Check this out.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Best story of the show.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Check this out. Someone writes in.
- 24:50Speaker 2: We own a small piece of river property in southwest Minnesota,
- 24:54Speaker 2: which is what makes this interesting.
- 24:56Speaker 1: To me a little bit. Because, you know, some guy
- 24:59Speaker 1: in Wyoming, sure. Sure. They're covered up in them. but
- 25:04Speaker 1: Southwest Minnesota, we are currently experiencing a drought.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Oh, um, my kid was reading me an article yesterday, uh,
- 25:14Speaker 2: that the Mallard count is just devastating right now.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Mallards are at like.
- 25:19Speaker 2: A 50 year low because of the same drought this
- 25:23Speaker 2: kid's talking about. Um, We're currently experiencing a drought which
- 25:29Speaker 2: has made the river lower than it has been in
- 25:31Speaker 2: quite some time. On a walk on the river this
- 25:33Speaker 2: summer with my three-year-old daughter, I found a broken off
- 25:37Speaker 2: buffalo horn, see picture below, in the water wedged between
- 25:41Speaker 2: some rocks.
- 25:42Speaker 1: There it is.
- 25:43Speaker 2: What's remarkable for you folks just listening is he's holding
- 25:46Speaker 2: up a chunk of a buffalo.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Skull, but it is coal black. Coal black, jet black.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I thought this was an amazing find until I went
- 25:58Speaker 2: home and showed it off to my wife and two boys.
- 26:02Speaker 2: When showing my six-year-old son the horn, he said, well, dad,
- 26:06Speaker 2: the other day when I was on the river, I
- 26:09Speaker 2: seen two of those and they were connected.
- 26:11Speaker 1: That's the best part.
- 26:15Speaker 2: We went down to the river and there under the
- 26:17Speaker 2: water wedged against the rock was a full buffalo skull.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And he's got pictures of his little boy. holding a
- 26:26Speaker 2: gorgeous jet black.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Skull. I would wonder about that you build... No.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You know when they find something super old and cool,
- 26:38Speaker 2: they put it in a tank? If you excavate an
- 26:42Speaker 2: old boat out of the water, they'll put it in
- 26:44Speaker 2: a tank of water.
- 26:46Speaker 5: So it doesn't deteriorate.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah, knowing that once you change its environment, it's going
- 26:50Speaker 2: to go to shit. I feel that in six months,
- 26:55Speaker 2: he's going to be the proud owner, owner of a
- 26:57Speaker 2: cardboard colored Buffalo skull and not a coal black Buffalo skull.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I don't know what he's going to do about this.
- 27:05Speaker 5: The stuff about this, how big it is, is interesting
- 27:09Speaker 5: to me.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oh, I hadn't got that.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Um, Simply because, like, is there, you can read it
- 27:15Speaker 5: and then I'll ask you.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Well, he's dabbling in here without knowing it. He's dabbling
- 27:19Speaker 2: in a discipline.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Called horn core morphology.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Which is what I'm getting at. Like, what it's actually from. Like,
- 27:27Speaker 5: because bison antiquus was bigger and had straighter horns and
- 27:31Speaker 5: it's kind of, is it possible that's not a bison
- 27:34Speaker 5: bison and it's a bison antiquus?
- 27:36Speaker 1: Here's what we'll do. Nate, you're going to have to
- 27:38Speaker 1: be in charge of this. Okay.
- 27:40Speaker 2: If he's willing, we will raise the money to have
- 27:46Speaker 2: him send a gram of it to beta analytics in
- 27:49Speaker 2: florida and we will settle the question we just need
- 27:53Speaker 2: 600 bucks we'll send it in we'll send a gram
- 27:57Speaker 2: in and get it radiocarbon dated we'll make a go
- 28:00Speaker 2: fund me.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Everyone pitches in a dollar.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Or whatever 50 cents i don't know something yep Until
- 28:07Speaker 2: we can find out how old.
- 28:08Speaker 1: His skull is.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Phil, did you pull up.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Minnesotans. Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Minnesotans, this is your duty as Minnesotans.
- 28:15Speaker 5: That picture is wild.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Go to Nate's GoFundMe, which he hasn't made yet, and
- 28:19Speaker 1: give a dollar. We'll work up a little kitty, a
- 28:23Speaker 1: little pot.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Of 600 bucks and send it to Beta Analytics. He
- 28:26Speaker 2: just got a Dremel out of Graham out of that sucker.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I've done it. I'll show him right where to get
- 28:30Speaker 1: it from.
- 28:30Speaker 6: This GoFundMe will be live when this episode drops.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I don't know the name yet.
- 28:34Speaker 2: It's called Minnesotans... For accurate bison skull dating.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Nailed it.
- 28:46Speaker 6: I got a quick update on your kid's question.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I already know the answer. Well, what did you think?
- 28:53Speaker 1: I think the blood's all right where it belongs.
- 28:55Speaker 6: No, my brother, who's an orthopedic surgeon and military trauma guy,
- 28:59Speaker 6: he said, If they were gradually frozen, then most blood
- 29:02Speaker 6: would be shunted centrally.
- 29:04Speaker 1: If they were flash frozen, probably. I think he meant flash.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I'll check back.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Yeah, text him.
- 29:10Speaker 1: He's too little to text, but I'll have to just
- 29:12Speaker 1: talk to him.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Not getting stuck in a meat locker and freezing over
- 29:16Speaker 5: the course of it.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'll just have to connect with him in person, I think,
- 29:19Speaker 1: later today.
- 29:20Speaker 2: All right, time for the news. Wow, Trey McKinney's here.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Youngest ever at 21 to become Angler of the Year.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Fresh out of the dove fields.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Here he is. trey mckinney you there yes sir what's
- 29:42Speaker 1: going on here's my.
- 29:44Speaker 2: First question for you so okay so you're 21 years
- 29:47Speaker 2: old you just became angler of the year at what
- 29:51Speaker 2: age did you become aware that there was a thing
- 29:53Speaker 2: called angler of the year.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Honestly, like you said, I was definitely to an age,
- 29:59Speaker 7: probably like 16, once I realized actually the true meaning
- 30:03Speaker 7: of it, of what it meant and what the actual
- 30:05Speaker 7: title was. I'd say probably 16, 17.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Lay out the path to become Angler of the Year.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Tell me about your last two years as a professional
- 30:19Speaker 2: bass fisherman.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 30:23Speaker 7: You actually have to qualify through the Open's There's a
- 30:26Speaker 7: few different ways you can, but the main way is
- 30:28Speaker 7: through the open. So it's like you probably have, I
- 30:30Speaker 7: don't know, anywhere from probably 200-plus guys. And they fish
- 30:35Speaker 7: nine events, and they take nine guys. And they take
- 30:38Speaker 7: a few more if you count the bass nation and stuff. But, yeah,
- 30:42Speaker 7: so you have to finish in the top nine in
- 30:43Speaker 7: points out of the average of all these guys. And
- 30:47Speaker 7: then there, after you qualify for that, you qualify for
- 30:50Speaker 7: the Elite Series of what we're fishing now. And then
- 30:54Speaker 7: it's actually the top 100. So and then every year
- 30:57Speaker 7: you have to finish probably above the cut line. So
- 31:01Speaker 7: it's about like the 80th place or something like that.
- 31:05Speaker 7: Or you actually get cut and then they bring in
- 31:06Speaker 7: the new nine guys. So it's definitely you definitely got
- 31:10Speaker 7: to stay on top.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Of your game for sure.
- 31:12Speaker 7: But once you qualify and you get in, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 7: that's kind of the goal is like once you get
- 31:17Speaker 7: kind of settled down, get in late series. A top
- 31:20Speaker 7: 50 finish in AOI is definitely everybody's goal to keep
- 31:23Speaker 7: you in it so you know you're kind of safe.
- 31:24Speaker 7: You don't have to worry about losing your career, your job.
- 31:28Speaker 7: But we've been really blessed these last years.
- 31:31Speaker 3: Actually, we never finished out of.
- 31:33Speaker 7: The top two out of Angler of the Year, and
- 31:35Speaker 7: we finally sealed the deal this year.
- 31:37Speaker 1: So you were second place two times in a row.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not very good closer, I guess.
- 31:46Speaker 2: That's amazing though, man. Kevin Van Dam, was he previously
- 31:51Speaker 2: the youngest angler of the year?
- 31:54Speaker 8: He was.
- 31:55Speaker 1: How old was he when he got it?
- 31:58Speaker 7: I think I beat him by three and a half
- 32:01Speaker 7: years or something like that.
- 32:03Speaker 3: It was actually a pretty good margin. I didn't realize
- 32:06Speaker 3: at all.
- 32:06Speaker 7: It was over a thousand something days that I beat
- 32:09Speaker 7: his record.
- 32:10Speaker 3: I was pretty pumped.
- 32:13Speaker 2: And then lay out for me a little bit, how
- 32:16Speaker 2: long have you been a professional bass? I'm assuming now
- 32:19Speaker 2: you're way beyond having a side job, right?
- 32:23Speaker 1: How long have you been?
- 32:24Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Well, I got two questions for you, I guess.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Tell us how you define a professional bass fisherman.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 32:34Speaker 7: So I guess how I would define it is when
- 32:37Speaker 7: most of your income comes from any kind of spot,
- 32:39Speaker 7: like any kind of sponsor. So, um, for us, like
- 32:43Speaker 7: that's where, if we didn't have our sponsors, there's no
- 32:45Speaker 7: way we could do it. Cause you guys have seen it.
- 32:47Speaker 7: Gas prices, diesel prices, absolutely insane right now. Um, so
- 32:52Speaker 7: it definitely is. It makes it tough, um, because our
- 32:54Speaker 7: payouts are pretty good. You know, it's a hundred grand
- 32:56Speaker 7: to win one, um, for the classic it's 300 grand. Um,
- 33:00Speaker 7: then you get a hundred grand for ally and then
- 33:02Speaker 7: they pay all the way down to 50th place. So
- 33:04Speaker 7: if you finish good and consistent, you know, you're going
- 33:07Speaker 7: to make a decent living. Um, but you know, where
- 33:09Speaker 7: you actually set yourself apart. to be a professional angler
- 33:13Speaker 7: is when you mostly rely on sponsors, social media, stuff
- 33:17Speaker 7: like that as well. And nowadays I feel like that's
- 33:20Speaker 7: where if you are actually one of the top like 10% that,
- 33:24Speaker 7: you know, I'd say a lot of the guys in
- 33:26Speaker 7: the elite series, you know, there's that 10% that actually
- 33:29Speaker 7: truly make a good living.
- 33:31Speaker 3: And that's definitely mainly related around the sponsors.
- 33:33Speaker 7: Okay.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So at 21 years of age, how many years have
- 33:36Speaker 2: you been a pro? Two.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I would say this, this, this, this one will be
- 33:42Speaker 3: my third.
- 33:43Speaker 7: Um, but before this, I was kind of, as soon
- 33:45Speaker 7: as I started the elite series, we kind of went, well,
- 33:47Speaker 7: we didn't have a plan B or nothing. You know,
- 33:49Speaker 7: it was kind of, that was it. We know we didn't,
- 33:51Speaker 7: we didn't have any other, no option. We didn't go
- 33:53Speaker 7: to college, nothing like that. Um, we just kind of
- 33:56Speaker 7: full send it all the way. And, uh, thank, thank
- 33:59Speaker 7: goodness we were blessed enough.
- 34:00Speaker 3: It worked out.
- 34:01Speaker 1: How many people in your immediate family are kind of
- 34:03Speaker 1: like he did what?
- 34:06Speaker 3: Yeah, a few people were a little skeptical. They're like,
- 34:09Speaker 3: so you're going to go fish for a living, right?
- 34:13Speaker 3: And I'm like, yeah, yeah, man, that's what I'm going
- 34:15Speaker 3: to try. And they're like, wow, okay, I didn't see
- 34:18Speaker 3: that one coming. But now, man, it's pretty special.
- 34:22Speaker 7: Everybody's kind of coming together here in Southern Illinois, and
- 34:25Speaker 7: I had so many text messages from everybody rooting me on.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Oh, I bet, man.
- 34:29Speaker 3: It's pretty special.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I got to tell you, me interviewing you, I can
- 34:32Speaker 2: only ask you dumb questions because I don't know a
- 34:34Speaker 2: lot about this. The guy that could ask you good
- 34:36Speaker 2: questions is Seth Morris, who's very excited that you're coming on,
- 34:41Speaker 2: and he follows you, but he's fishing.
- 34:44Speaker 3: That sounds about right.
- 34:45Speaker 2: So you would have had a better interview if he
- 34:47Speaker 2: wasn't fishing, but it makes sense that he's fishing, but
- 34:50Speaker 2: he's a big fan of yours too. So what's your
- 34:54Speaker 2: vacation look like now? Do you sit back and kick it,
- 34:56Speaker 2: or when do you got to go out and fish
- 34:59Speaker 2: and compete again?
- 34:59Speaker 9: Absolutely.
- 35:01Speaker 7: So right now it's home season. Um, that's literally, that's
- 35:04Speaker 7: basically all I do is a hunting fish. Um, just
- 35:07Speaker 7: an outdoorsman. Like, I feel like a lot of us,
- 35:09Speaker 7: you know, it's, uh, it's kind of what I enjoy. Um,
- 35:12Speaker 7: but you, usually my season will start mid January. And
- 35:15Speaker 7: unfortunately that's about when all the ducks get here, um,
- 35:18Speaker 7: down here in Southern Illinois. Um, but usually, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 7: I get it. a lot of good weeks before that
- 35:23Speaker 7: and stuff. And we usually start mid January and then run.
- 35:26Speaker 7: I usually, I have actually an in bed truck camper. Um, now,
- 35:30Speaker 7: now that I invested in and I usually run till
- 35:32Speaker 7: the first week of September, um, and come back home.
- 35:36Speaker 7: And then usually that's when I head to Canada, Saskatchewan
- 35:39Speaker 7: or anywhere like that and stay up there for, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 7: two weeks to a month and over a month and, uh,
- 35:44Speaker 7: just kind of work my way back waterfowl hunting. Um,
- 35:46Speaker 7: All the way here to Southern Illinois. We got some
- 35:49Speaker 7: big whitetail here. A little bit north of me is
- 35:51Speaker 7: definitely a lot better. But no, we got some good
- 35:54Speaker 7: deer and pretty much live in the woods and in
- 35:56Speaker 7: a field after fishing season's over.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Okay, here's a couple quickies for you.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Hold on. I feel like you're already wrapping it up.
- 36:03Speaker 4: We're not going to go into the forward-facing sonar with Trey?
- 36:06Speaker 3: Hey, we can.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I'm in it. Let's debate it.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Let's do it.
- 36:08Speaker 6: Oh.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I don't want to hit him up with that. He's
- 36:11Speaker 1: probably sick of hearing about it. There's just a big
- 36:14Speaker 1: article in.
- 36:14Speaker 2: The Wall Street Journal about him and the Canadian and
- 36:19Speaker 2: forward-facing sonar.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I just assumed he's sick of talking about it. We'll
- 36:22Speaker 1: ask him about it. Can I ask my two quickies?
- 36:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I'm going to ask my two quickies, and I'm handing
- 36:26Speaker 2: it over to Giannis. Small-mouth bass or large-mouth bass? There
- 36:30Speaker 2: is a wrong answer to this.
- 36:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 7: I mean, they're so different that it's hard to pick
- 36:37Speaker 7: one or the other because there's so many– positive and
- 36:40Speaker 7: negatives of both. But man, a big, like a giant largemouth,
- 36:44Speaker 7: like a Texan, it's hard to beat that.
- 36:48Speaker 1: That's the wrong answer. I'm sorry.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Now, remove the professional aspect of it. Someone comes to you,
- 36:59Speaker 2: like a supreme emperor being, comes to you and says, Trey,
- 37:05Speaker 2: you can hunt or fish.
- 37:06Speaker 1: You can't do both. but there's no professional part of it.
- 37:12Speaker 1: What do you say?
- 37:14Speaker 3: I feel like, I feel like I'm also going to
- 37:16Speaker 3: pick hunting.
- 37:16Speaker 7: I mean, mainly because I probably do fishing for a job,
- 37:19Speaker 7: but the camaraderie and like, you know, just the hanging out.
- 37:22Speaker 3: With your buddies, uh, the memories that you have.
- 37:24Speaker 7: I mean, you can have it in fishing, but man,
- 37:27Speaker 7: all the ones that I remember seem like they come
- 37:28Speaker 7: from the field.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Or the woods.
- 37:30Speaker 3: And, uh, I don't know.
- 37:31Speaker 7: It's pretty special moment when you got it, when you
- 37:33Speaker 7: got your buddies and the right people you surround yourself with. And,
- 37:36Speaker 7: I know you have plenty of those moments.
- 37:39Speaker 3: It's pretty special.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I used to very much agree, and now that I'm
- 37:44Speaker 2: in my 50s, I switched my answer to fishing.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Really? I think you could fish to the bitter end, man.
- 37:57Speaker 3: You can.
- 37:57Speaker 1: If your kids can get you into a boat, you're fishing.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I just feel like if I had to pick now,
- 38:03Speaker 2: if I was being strategic, I would now go fishing
- 38:06Speaker 2: because I'm like, dude, I'm going to fish until the
- 38:07Speaker 2: day I– I mean, I'll literally be fishing on the
- 38:10Speaker 2: day I die.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I hope. I hope. You could be.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Shooting doves off of a bucket on that day too.
- 38:18Speaker 4: That's true.
- 38:19Speaker 2: If it's dove season. But it's always fishing season. I'm
- 38:22Speaker 2: switching to fishing. Like my– I just switched. I officially switched. Okay,
- 38:26Speaker 2: Yanni's going to take over. He's going to ask you
- 38:28Speaker 2: the hard-hitting questions everybody wants to hear.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. I'm trying to set it up
- 38:33Speaker 4: so that we can... Everybody knows what this is. Brody,
- 38:37Speaker 4: you might have to help.
- 38:38Speaker 1: We talk about this so much.
- 38:41Speaker 5: If they don't know what forward-facing sonar is now, forget them.
- 38:43Speaker 4: So everybody knows what forward-facing sonar is. In these tournaments
- 38:46Speaker 4: that Trey is in, it's become so contentious and... uh
- 38:51Speaker 4: correct me if i'm wrong here but that like in
- 38:54Speaker 4: your uh the the entire tournament season they split the
- 38:58Speaker 4: tournaments in half where half of them you can use
- 39:01Speaker 4: this new technology and some you can't or the other
- 39:04Speaker 4: half you can't a lot of people thought that this
- 39:07Speaker 4: new crop of younger anglers like yourself is there anybody
- 39:11Speaker 4: younger than you on the on the tournament Oh.
- 39:15Speaker 3: It's close now.
- 39:16Speaker 7: Like I know like last year I was definitely the youngest,
- 39:19Speaker 7: but now it's close.
- 39:20Speaker 4: All right. So, you know, sub 25, sub 30 year
- 39:23Speaker 4: olds that are all using this technology to catch fish.
- 39:25Speaker 4: And people thought that since they said in half the tournaments,
- 39:28Speaker 4: you wouldn't be able to use this.
- 39:30Speaker 1: They'd all shit the bed.
- 39:31Speaker 4: Yeah, these guys would not be able to catch a fish.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Turned out that wasn't the case. At least it wasn't
- 39:36Speaker 4: the case for Trey.
- 39:36Speaker 2: It's the biggest nah-ha in the world, is they take
- 39:39Speaker 2: his forward-facing sonar away, and he still wins!
- 39:42Speaker 4: Yeah, so I guess, I don't know if... I don't
- 39:44Speaker 4: have a specific question prepared on the heels of that,
- 39:47Speaker 4: but off the top of my head, I guess... when
- 39:50Speaker 4: they made that rule and you knew that you were
- 39:53Speaker 4: going to, that you weren't going to be able to
- 39:54Speaker 4: use the technology for half of your tournaments, were.
- 39:58Speaker 1: You like, Oh no.
- 40:00Speaker 4: Or were you like, Oh, no big deal. I was
- 40:02Speaker 4: fishing like this for 10 years before I ever had
- 40:04Speaker 4: forward facing sonar.
- 40:06Speaker 7: Yeah, no, I definitely more of that case because like
- 40:09Speaker 7: when we started, of course we didn't have it. Right. Like,
- 40:11Speaker 7: so it was just, just like normal fishing, you know? Um,
- 40:14Speaker 7: but like, to me, like the four facing like a tool, right.
- 40:17Speaker 7: So like for me, um, it's about efficiency. So it's
- 40:20Speaker 7: like anything else. It's just, it's just makes you way
- 40:23Speaker 7: more efficient and fast and like you can cover a
- 40:25Speaker 7: lot more water and understand what's going on. Um, so yeah,
- 40:29Speaker 7: they did, you know, honestly, it's kind of crazy because
- 40:31Speaker 7: the older folks that, uh, is doing most of the
- 40:35Speaker 7: complaining and, you know, about it, um, they actually had
- 40:37Speaker 7: the tool first, um, but, uh, they just didn't, I guess, uh,
- 40:42Speaker 7: learn it as well. And, uh, the younger guys come
- 40:45Speaker 7: in and, And, you know, it was it was the
- 40:47Speaker 7: deal because it made you so efficient. Like now, you know,
- 40:51Speaker 7: I go out to the lake and if I turn
- 40:52Speaker 7: my four face off, you know, it takes me 10
- 40:55Speaker 7: times to hit.
- 40:56Speaker 3: This brush ball, you know.
- 40:57Speaker 7: But if I turn it on, you know, I can
- 40:58Speaker 7: hit one cast and hit right in the middle of
- 41:00Speaker 7: the brush ball. So, yeah, it just comes down for me.
- 41:04Speaker 7: I just like it because it's an efficiency game. Like
- 41:06Speaker 7: I just get tired, caught up by fishing a spot if.
- 41:10Speaker 3: You don't got no fish, you know, or not. Not
- 41:12Speaker 3: only that.
- 41:13Speaker 7: I like if I'm casting, at least I know my
- 41:14Speaker 7: bait's in a high percentage area. So like, you know, that's,
- 41:18Speaker 7: that's the big deal for me. I like keeping it
- 41:20Speaker 7: in a high percentage area, uh, where I have good
- 41:22Speaker 7: odds all day long. You know, that's, that's the whole
- 41:24Speaker 7: thing about fishing. You know, if you, if you keep
- 41:26Speaker 7: your bait in the highest percentage odds all day long,
- 41:29Speaker 7: most likely you're going to finish, you know, at the
- 41:31Speaker 7: top five, um, if you're fishing enough with it. So it's, uh,
- 41:34Speaker 7: it's definitely a controversial term for sure in bass fishing
- 41:37Speaker 7: right now. Like, That's the word that gets everybody riled up,
- 41:40Speaker 7: live scope.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Would you fish a tournament that was– let's say there
- 41:45Speaker 2: was a tournament and it had a normal paycheck or
- 41:48Speaker 2: a normal– what do you call it?
- 41:49Speaker 1: I don't know, like a prize. Purse. A normal purse.
- 41:53Speaker 2: And the tournament was like zero live scope. No live
- 41:58Speaker 2: scope in this tournament at all. Would you be like, great,
- 42:00Speaker 2: I'm in?
- 42:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I definitely wouldn't be like, hey, yeah.
- 42:04Speaker 7: But I would definitely be like, let's do it. It
- 42:07Speaker 7: doesn't really affect me. Um, no, it's definitely, it's cause
- 42:10Speaker 7: it's still just fishing like anything else. You know, there's,
- 42:13Speaker 7: there's plenty of stuff.
- 42:13Speaker 3: That kind of goes, I guess, coexist with it, but, um, no, I, it's.
- 42:18Speaker 7: Still fishing to me. You know, you're still going out
- 42:19Speaker 7: there trying to get as many bites as you can, um,
- 42:22Speaker 7: and catch as many fish as you can. So honestly,
- 42:25Speaker 7: you know, the game stays the same. It just makes
- 42:27Speaker 7: it a little different, you know, when you're able to
- 42:29Speaker 7: use those tools, whether it'd be like, you know, hunting,
- 42:32Speaker 7: I guess, I mean, this is not the same, but
- 42:34Speaker 7: like with Onyx, right? So like, if you have your
- 42:38Speaker 7: on X and you're more efficient knowing exactly which ways.
- 42:40Speaker 3: You can go up the mountains, how you can go up,
- 42:42Speaker 3: how you can, you know.
- 42:43Speaker 7: Track down or cut a deer off or however. Um,
- 42:45Speaker 7: but without that, it's a little harder. Cause you kind
- 42:48Speaker 7: of got to, you know, just kind of guess, you
- 42:49Speaker 7: know what I mean?
- 42:50Speaker 1: Not test, but you got to go over there first
- 42:52Speaker 1: and have a look.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 42:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:54Speaker 3: You're a little bit more efficient with it. So that's
- 42:56Speaker 3: how I, I guess see it.
- 42:57Speaker 7: A live scope for me is like, I just like
- 43:00Speaker 7: it because it's a great tool. You know, I know
- 43:02Speaker 7: exactly what I'm getting into when I'm there and, uh,
- 43:05Speaker 7: makes life a little easier.
- 43:07Speaker 4: All right. Possibly as contentious as four-facing sonar.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Come on.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Do you eat largemouth?
- 43:15Speaker 1: Oh, you can't ask him this question.
- 43:16Speaker 4: Why not?
- 43:17Speaker 1: Because you'd put him on the spot.
- 43:19Speaker 4: I really do. Do you eat them? And then if
- 43:22Speaker 4: you say no, do you have any problems with people
- 43:24Speaker 4: that do eat the bass?
- 43:27Speaker 3: No, actually, a lot of times.
- 43:28Speaker 7: So it depends. And if you're keeping like six pounders,
- 43:32Speaker 7: I'm going to be like.
- 43:32Speaker 4: Bro, I wasn't doing anything. Like, no.
- 43:36Speaker 8: No.
- 43:36Speaker 3: For sure. Like that's, that's a problem.
- 43:39Speaker 7: But, but no, like if you're just helping, like, honestly,
- 43:43Speaker 7: it helps a lot of fisheries out.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:44Speaker 7: Because like a lot of them will have too high
- 43:47Speaker 7: of a population where they, you know, they don't have
- 43:50Speaker 7: enough to eat. So they get stunted and then, you know,
- 43:52Speaker 7: you won't have any big fish to catch. So it is,
- 43:54Speaker 7: I tell a lot of people, if you're in a
- 43:56Speaker 7: high populated area where there's a ton of fish from
- 43:59Speaker 7: 14 inches to, you know, 16 or 17, those are
- 44:03Speaker 7: the perfect to eat. Like, and honestly, when you do
- 44:05Speaker 7: take them out, and you knock the sides off of them,
- 44:08Speaker 7: it honestly will help that fishery a lot because it
- 44:10Speaker 7: gives a lot of the other sources of life to
- 44:13Speaker 7: get food. You know, it's not such a race and
- 44:15Speaker 7: not skinny. You know, it's an unhealthy fishery when you
- 44:19Speaker 7: got too many. But when it's just right and we
- 44:21Speaker 7: have people where they take them out and eat them,
- 44:23Speaker 7: that's when you grow the biggest ones.
- 44:25Speaker 1: So you like to fry them up, obviously.
- 44:28Speaker 7: I do both, you know, bass, what I like about it,
- 44:30Speaker 7: it's a little bit, you know, harder. So like you
- 44:32Speaker 7: can grill it or something like that, where when you
- 44:34Speaker 7: kind of get underneath it, you know, it don't just
- 44:36Speaker 7: all fall apart.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Got it.
- 44:38Speaker 3: So it does, you can actually black it in.
- 44:39Speaker 7: On a grill and it's honestly, it's quite tasty.
- 44:43Speaker 9: I love it.
- 44:43Speaker 3: But frying it is definitely a good option. You can't,
- 44:45Speaker 3: can't go wrong with that.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Okay.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Last question. You married or anything like that?
- 44:48Speaker 7: I do have a girlfriend going on a year and
- 44:52Speaker 7: a half now. So still early for a lot of people,
- 44:54Speaker 7: but now it's, it's going really well.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Congratulations. All right, everybody. Trey McKinney, youngest ever twin angler
- 45:03Speaker 1: of the year. Congratulations.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Good luck on your fall. You've been hitting some doves.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Sounds like you've got deer plans, duck plans, fish plans.
- 45:13Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 45:14Speaker 4: All right, man.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Enjoy it, buddy. Thanks for coming on.
- 45:17Speaker 4: Thanks, Trey.
- 45:17Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Thanks for the opportunity as well, man.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Have a good day. Take it easy.
- 45:22Speaker 2: See you, boys.
- 45:26Speaker 1: All right, Bryce Stubbs.
- 45:28Speaker 4: How's it going?
- 45:29Speaker 1: Welcome into the studio.
- 45:30Speaker 4: This is great.
- 45:31Speaker 8: Happy to be here.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Tell us what 100 Cooks is, man.
- 45:34Speaker 8: So it was a cooking competition show. It was the
- 45:37Speaker 8: first season ever. And the premise was taking home cooks
- 45:42Speaker 8: from America. And they found 100 of us and they
- 45:44Speaker 8: flew us all to LA. And then it was just
- 45:47Speaker 8: a competition.
- 45:47Speaker 1: How'd they find you?
- 45:49Speaker 8: So for me, they found me on Instagram. So I
- 45:51Speaker 8: would post like cooking videos and stuff when I was
- 45:53Speaker 8: in college and it was kind of just a hobby thing,
- 45:55Speaker 8: you know, like meal preps for my friends. And then, yeah,
- 45:58Speaker 8: they found me on that. And I thought it was
- 46:00Speaker 8: a scam. So I didn't respond for like four days.
- 46:02Speaker 8: I had this DM and I was like, that's not real.
- 46:04Speaker 8: This is back in December of 2025. And then four
- 46:09Speaker 8: days go by. I'm like, what's going to hurt? You know,
- 46:11Speaker 8: I was like working in the oil fields. It was
- 46:12Speaker 8: on my phone probably too much anyways. I was like,
- 46:14Speaker 8: I'll just respond. She gets back to me right away.
- 46:16Speaker 8: And she's like, let's have a phone call like at
- 46:18Speaker 8: 10 tomorrow. And I was like, okay, maybe it's real.
- 46:21Speaker 8: Chatted with her for like five minutes. And she's like, yeah,
- 46:24Speaker 8: you seem like a good fit for the show. We're
- 46:25Speaker 8: going to send you to the head casting director. Maybe
- 46:28Speaker 8: this is real.
- 46:29Speaker 1: And then the next day, they already watched all your videos.
- 46:31Speaker 8: They must've seen a couple of my videos.
- 46:32Speaker 1: They must've known something about you or like did.
- 46:35Speaker 8: A little bit of research. But then I kind of
- 46:36Speaker 8: just started talking about like my story and like the
- 46:38Speaker 8: jobs I've worked in the stuff I've done. And they
- 46:40Speaker 8: were just like interested in that, I think. And they're like, well,
- 46:43Speaker 8: we can build something off of this. And then I
- 46:45Speaker 8: talked to the head casting director. Uh, the next day
- 46:48Speaker 8: I had a zoom call. So like happened really fast.
- 46:50Speaker 8: It was in the beginning of December. And, We had
- 46:52Speaker 8: like a 30 minute conversation and then he like stopped
- 46:56Speaker 8: it at the end. And he's like, dude, you're going
- 46:57Speaker 8: to be great for the show. He's like, this is like,
- 46:59Speaker 8: he's like, I think you'll do good on this. He's like,
- 47:00Speaker 8: if you don't get on this, he's like, we'll get
- 47:01Speaker 8: you on guys, grocery games or something else.
- 47:03Speaker 1: You know?
- 47:03Speaker 8: And I was like, oh, cool. You know, like it
- 47:05Speaker 8: must've went well.
- 47:05Speaker 1: It's all it takes.
- 47:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:06Speaker 8: And then he took that and I guess they cut
- 47:08Speaker 8: it down to like three minutes and then sent it
- 47:10Speaker 8: to the head producers of the show. And then Christmas
- 47:14Speaker 8: time came, New Year's, New Year's came. And so it
- 47:16Speaker 8: was just like dark for like three weeks. And I
- 47:19Speaker 8: was kind of like, all right, well, is this going
- 47:20Speaker 8: to happen or not?
- 47:21Speaker 1: I have to go.
- 47:21Speaker 8: I was working in the oil fields at the time.
- 47:23Speaker 1: What oil fields?
- 47:25Speaker 8: So I was in Wright, Wyoming, Gillette, Wyoming, working there.
- 47:28Speaker 8: And then my last hitch I did in March after
- 47:32Speaker 8: the show, I went to North Dakota. So that was
- 47:34Speaker 8: over by Stanley. But yeah, so I was about to
- 47:38Speaker 8: start my next hitch in January. And I was just
- 47:40Speaker 8: kind of waiting for the show because it's going to
- 47:42Speaker 8: be the third week of January. We're going to film.
- 47:44Speaker 8: We'll fly you down. And so the 14th, I was
- 47:47Speaker 8: supposed to start my next hitch. The 13th, I got
- 47:49Speaker 8: an email and I was like, hey, you made it
- 47:50Speaker 8: on the show, we bought your flights to LA, hope
- 47:52Speaker 8: these work. You're flying down in seven days. And I
- 47:55Speaker 8: was like, I have a job. So I had to
- 47:58Speaker 8: call my boss and explain what I had going on.
- 48:01Speaker 8: And he was kind of on the fence. He was like, well,
- 48:03Speaker 8: you know, we kind of need you and this and that.
- 48:05Speaker 8: Then his wife found out and she got like to
- 48:08Speaker 8: him and was like, he's going to Hollywood, you know?
- 48:10Speaker 8: I'm like, he's going to go down there and he's
- 48:12Speaker 8: going to cook. And so then they're like, yeah, you
- 48:13Speaker 8: go ahead. Go ahead.
- 48:14Speaker 1: It was great.
- 48:15Speaker 8: Cause that's when we had that cold snap and it
- 48:16Speaker 8: was like negative 45 and Stanley, like with the windshield.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:20Speaker 8: My brother was up there working and I'm like in
- 48:21Speaker 8: my king size bed and you know, in the Hilton
- 48:24Speaker 8: in LA, I was like, this is great. You know,
- 48:26Speaker 8: it's like vacation for me.
- 48:27Speaker 1: So how long were you down there? Like how long
- 48:29Speaker 1: did it take to film the show?
- 48:30Speaker 8: So how it worked is they, they flew us all
- 48:32Speaker 8: down there at the same time. We got it on
- 48:35Speaker 8: a Thursday. It was like 15 days total. I think
- 48:37Speaker 8: I was there. The Friday, we had like a media day.
- 48:40Speaker 8: So we did like an interview, like who you are,
- 48:42Speaker 8: why you're here. And then Saturday, dark day. And then
- 48:45Speaker 8: Sunday was the first day of filming. And it was cutthroat.
- 48:48Speaker 8: Like the first challenge, there was like 11 people called down.
- 48:51Speaker 8: And I think seven were eliminated right off the bat.
- 48:54Speaker 8: And if you get eliminated, like they fly you home
- 48:55Speaker 8: the next day. Like they're not going to pay.
- 48:57Speaker 1: For you to stay. So you're saying that you sort
- 48:59Speaker 1: of like within a day or whatever, you went from.
- 49:02Speaker 8: 100 people I think episode two, there was 74 left.
- 49:06Speaker 1: So they're getting right to it.
- 49:07Speaker 8: Yeah, they went straight to the point. We didn't know
- 49:10Speaker 8: anything when we showed up. It was like an old
- 49:13Speaker 8: abandoned Ikea building. So it was massive. And we didn't
- 49:16Speaker 8: know the judges. We didn't know the host.
- 49:17Speaker 1: All kinds of unassembled.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Uh unassembled deck yeah home furnishings everywhere.
- 49:22Speaker 8: Yeah no they've turned it into like a full-on cooking
- 49:24Speaker 8: studio with like massive commercial fridges and like everything to
- 49:27Speaker 8: store all their stuff for all the shows that they
- 49:29Speaker 8: run out of it um but yeah so no one
- 49:31Speaker 8: knew what was going on like everyone was kind of
- 49:33Speaker 8: in the dark and it was just a lot of
- 49:34Speaker 8: sitting and waiting and then they, we found out and
- 49:37Speaker 8: then they call this down and I was like, Oh,
- 49:38Speaker 8: this is, this is real life. And I was like
- 49:39Speaker 8: seeing people cry and getting cut off the show.
- 49:41Speaker 2: And I was like, and they're telling you, like, give
- 49:43Speaker 2: me an example of a challenge.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Like you come down in the morning or whatever, and
- 49:46Speaker 1: they tell you to do what? Yeah.
- 49:47Speaker 8: So like we go on set, they'd run through like
- 49:50Speaker 8: everybody clap, everybody cheer, kind of get the B roll
- 49:52Speaker 8: stuff for the show. And it felt really weird. Cause
- 49:55Speaker 8: there's like thousands of cameras everywhere. And I'm just sitting like, Oh,
- 49:58Speaker 8: I've never been, you know, in a studio like that
- 50:00Speaker 8: or ever actually. And, uh, So the first challenge, they
- 50:04Speaker 8: have this big rolling machine. It's got like balls in it.
- 50:07Speaker 8: And each ball says like a certain challenge and they
- 50:09Speaker 8: have another rolling machine. They call them like the mixers
- 50:12Speaker 8: and it's got a hundred balls from one to a hundred.
- 50:14Speaker 8: And every one of us has a number on our
- 50:16Speaker 8: apron and we're sitting in a chair and there's a
- 50:18Speaker 8: big number behind us. That's our number. It was like
- 50:20Speaker 8: squid games kind of feel.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:23Speaker 4: It was weird.
- 50:24Speaker 8: And then they would roll the first one and it'd
- 50:26Speaker 8: be like best noodle dish. And like Terry Cruz, the host,
- 50:30Speaker 8: best noodle dish challenge. And then, You know, he'd be like,
- 50:33Speaker 8: all right, I need 11 cooks for this one. He'd
- 50:36Speaker 8: walk to the mixer and one at a time, he'd
- 50:38Speaker 8: roll this mixer and then pull a ball out and
- 50:40Speaker 8: be like number 26. And they'd come down and you'd
- 50:42Speaker 8: have to wait until everyone gets called down. And then
- 50:45Speaker 8: he'd be like, I'm.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Going to get your number 39.
- 50:47Speaker 5: Okay.
- 50:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:49Speaker 2: So, and I'm best noodles. Were you hoping, I hope
- 50:51Speaker 2: they don't get my number.
- 50:52Speaker 8: I would have been okay with it. I was like,
- 50:54Speaker 8: I definitely don't want to be the first person to
- 50:55Speaker 8: go down and cook. But in my head, I was like,
- 50:57Speaker 8: just don't go home episode one. I was like, every
- 50:59Speaker 8: cooking show I've ever watched, I was like, there's always
- 51:01Speaker 8: the guy who goes home episode one. If that happened
- 51:04Speaker 8: to me, I was going to tell nobody I went
- 51:05Speaker 8: on Food Network. I was like, I was going to
- 51:06Speaker 8: come home. I'm not going to ever talk about this
- 51:09Speaker 8: again if I get cut the first episode.
- 51:11Speaker 4: See, I feel like those producers, when they cast you,
- 51:13Speaker 4: they were like, this guy is top 20 material. And
- 51:17Speaker 4: they cast those other people. I'm reading here in the
- 51:20Speaker 4: notes that you beat an old lady in the first round.
- 51:23Speaker 4: They cast her to lose in the first round.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:26Speaker 8: So that's where like there was obvious like you still
- 51:29Speaker 8: have to cook. You know, it's like it can't be
- 51:30Speaker 8: rigged because you have to go down there and cook.
- 51:32Speaker 8: And like I watched it. But like as far as
- 51:34Speaker 8: the number drawing goes, it's still TV. It's reality TV.
- 51:38Speaker 8: And so the first challenge goes, you know, I see
- 51:40Speaker 8: seven people get eliminated. And next challenge, I turned to
- 51:44Speaker 8: this guy behind me. I'm like, dude, imagine if they
- 51:46Speaker 8: did like a one on one challenge. He's like, oh,
- 51:47Speaker 8: that would be crazy, you know. right after Terry pulls
- 51:50Speaker 8: a ball and he goes rotisserie chicken challenge. And he goes,
- 51:53Speaker 8: I only need two cooks for this challenge. And I
- 51:55Speaker 8: was like, okay, there's no way like one-on-one challenge. I
- 51:58Speaker 8: was like, they're not going to pick me. Like there's
- 52:00Speaker 8: 92 other people up here in the stands. Like there's
- 52:02Speaker 8: no way I'm going to be picked.
- 52:03Speaker 9: Sure.
- 52:04Speaker 8: First number that comes out is mine. And so then
- 52:06Speaker 8: I'm walking down the stands. It's the second challenge of
- 52:08Speaker 8: the whole show.
- 52:09Speaker 1: You're watching this little ball deal.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 1: You feel like it's a legit ball deal.
- 52:14Speaker 8: So that's what I don't know is like, how can
- 52:16Speaker 8: they have put with like, did they put a bunch
- 52:18Speaker 8: of 39s in there? You know what I mean? Or
- 52:20Speaker 8: did they, like, is there someone's hands back there? Like,
- 52:22Speaker 8: cause it would mess up sometimes. And like, that's the
- 52:25Speaker 8: thing where they put the lady. So she was in
- 52:27Speaker 8: her seventies. She survived the noodle dish challenge and how
- 52:30Speaker 8: it works. If you get the best dish, you get
- 52:32Speaker 8: immunity for the episode. Oh, if you get whatever, they
- 52:35Speaker 8: decide to keep four out of 11, you're safe, but
- 52:38Speaker 8: you can get your ball thrown back in the mixer.
- 52:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 52:40Speaker 8: So her ball gets thrown back in the mixer. And
- 52:42Speaker 8: she had just survived the other round. She probably got
- 52:44Speaker 8: like second or third place. And everyone in the crowd
- 52:46Speaker 8: loved her. You know, like we're all home cooks. It's like, oh,
- 52:48Speaker 8: you know, Antoinette, she survived, you know. Everyone was calling
- 52:50Speaker 8: her Nona. She had like a catchphrase after the first cook.
- 52:53Speaker 1: What was your catchphrase?
- 52:54Speaker 8: Toast that bread. Because she forgot to toast the bread.
- 52:57Speaker 8: And she told the judge she would toast the bread
- 52:58Speaker 8: if she got a chance.
- 52:59Speaker 1: What was your catchphrase?
- 53:00Speaker 8: I didn't, well, I didn't have a catchphrase really. I
- 53:03Speaker 8: was trying to just figure things out when I was there.
- 53:06Speaker 8: They did get, I'll tell you the nickname they gave
- 53:08Speaker 8: me after. Because it was pretty funny, but. I went,
- 53:10Speaker 8: so I got called down and like, I knew everybody's like,
- 53:13Speaker 8: who's this guy? I was like wearing a real tree
- 53:15Speaker 8: camo shirt. Like, who's this guy? And I'm like, I'm
- 53:16Speaker 8: from Montana. And like, where I was like, where's Montana at?
- 53:19Speaker 8: And like, like a lot of people there genuinely didn't
- 53:21Speaker 8: know like where it was. And then they call her
- 53:23Speaker 8: number right after. And everyone's like, she's cooking like twice
- 53:26Speaker 8: in a row. Like what the heck? But it's like,
- 53:28Speaker 8: take the youngest guy who's from like Montana. And then
- 53:30Speaker 8: like this Italian, like grandma and like put them against
- 53:33Speaker 8: each other. I was like, that doesn't just happen by chance. Uh,
- 53:37Speaker 8: and so, yeah, we had to cook off. Um, we
- 53:40Speaker 8: had a rotisserie chicken. We had 35 minutes, I think,
- 53:42Speaker 8: to make the better dish using a rotisserie chicken, like pre-cooked.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 53:48Speaker 8: So it wasn't, it was like a fun challenge, you know,
- 53:50Speaker 8: cause it's like, it's still like home cooks. And so
- 53:51Speaker 8: they're trying to like, make sure like people like relate. Um,
- 53:54Speaker 8: and like, I mean, I use rotisserie chicken all the time.
- 53:56Speaker 1: It's great. It's quick.
- 53:58Speaker 8: Uh, yeah. So we both had to make our own
- 53:59Speaker 8: dish and, uh, I ended up beating her and like,
- 54:03Speaker 8: After I won, everyone in the crowd was like, oh,
- 54:06Speaker 8: like no one was excited.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Like it was so hard.
- 54:09Speaker 7: Of course.
- 54:09Speaker 1: They're like, this Montana dude, he's got to get out
- 54:11Speaker 1: of here.
- 54:12Speaker 8: I couldn't relish it at all. Like I was like,
- 54:14Speaker 8: you know, excited. But then like everyone was like, oh no.
- 54:17Speaker 8: And so I gave her a hug and like felt bad.
- 54:19Speaker 8: And then the next day on set. So we filmed
- 54:21Speaker 8: the only episode filmed over two days was episode one.
- 54:24Speaker 8: And so I had immunity now because I had the
- 54:26Speaker 8: best dish in that round. So the next day, I, like,
- 54:28Speaker 8: showed up, you know, like, in my slippers. And I
- 54:30Speaker 8: was like, I don't have to cook today because I
- 54:31Speaker 8: have immunity. And I was kind of enjoying the day
- 54:33Speaker 8: on set, watching other people go up. And they all
- 54:36Speaker 8: started calling me the Granny Slayer. And it, like, stuck.
- 54:39Speaker 8: And so everyone was like, oh, there's the Granny Slayer
- 54:42Speaker 8: from Montana. Like, the Granny Slayer. And it was so
- 54:45Speaker 8: funny because I was like, they're going to run with this.
- 54:47Speaker 8: And so then I had to do an interview after.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Yeah, they kind of switched it to, like, Buck Slayer.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Yeah, anything else.
- 54:53Speaker 8: Like, the first guy I met on the, like– the
- 54:56Speaker 8: ride to the hotel was like, I'm going to call
- 54:58Speaker 8: you cowboy. I was like, yeah, that's, I like that.
- 55:00Speaker 8: You know, I'll take that. Then as soon as it
- 55:02Speaker 8: switched to granny, so I was like, this isn't going
- 55:03Speaker 8: to be good. And then the producers would kind of
- 55:05Speaker 8: play with that a little bit. Like after my interview
- 55:07Speaker 8: of winning, they're like, so why did you think you
- 55:09Speaker 8: would beat her? Like, why did you have so much
- 55:10Speaker 8: confidence going into this? Like you knew you were going
- 55:12Speaker 8: to beat her. And I was like, well, I didn't,
- 55:13Speaker 8: I didn't say that, you know, but they're trying to
- 55:15Speaker 8: get me to like play a part and stuff. And,
- 55:18Speaker 8: but they were, they were pretty good about all that.
- 55:20Speaker 8: Like they were upfront in the beginning. They're like, you know,
- 55:22Speaker 8: you guys are just regular people. Like, we want to
- 55:25Speaker 8: make you look good. We don't want you to like,
- 55:26Speaker 8: we're not trying to create stories here. Like if you
- 55:28Speaker 8: act like this, we're going to make you look like this.
- 55:30Speaker 8: Cause that's how you're acting.
- 55:32Speaker 4: So it was nice.
- 55:32Speaker 8: Cause it was like a lot of people just got
- 55:33Speaker 8: to go on, you know, it's like doctors, lawyers, people
- 55:38Speaker 8: like that. There's a lot of, there's some content creators
- 55:40Speaker 8: on there, like food people like that. Um, but it
- 55:43Speaker 8: was just people kind of going on telling their story
- 55:45Speaker 8: and every day, like home cooks, which was kind of
- 55:47Speaker 8: a cool thing to see. Cause I think in a
- 55:49Speaker 8: lot of cooking shows, there's a lot more ego involved
- 55:52Speaker 8: than chefs.
- 55:53Speaker 4: Do you really feel like you're an everyday home cook, though?
- 55:56Speaker 4: Because I feel like that's what I would call myself.
- 55:58Speaker 4: And when I look at someone with your accolades.
- 56:01Speaker 8: I'm like, I got, it couldn't have been more perfect
- 56:05Speaker 8: timing for me. So, like, I grew up in Churchill,
- 56:09Speaker 8: went to high school in Manhattan, went to college at MSU.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Manhattan, Montana.
- 56:13Speaker 8: Manhattan, Montana.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Montana State University.
- 56:15Speaker 8: Amsterdam Elementary, Montana.
- 56:17Speaker 1: No. Yeah.
- 56:18Speaker 8: Um, but I graduated.
- 56:19Speaker 1: He's not an international player.
- 56:20Speaker 8: I'm from Amsterdam with school in Manhattan. Uh, I graduated
- 56:24Speaker 8: from MSU with a finance degree and through college, I
- 56:27Speaker 8: had always cooked for my friends and like gold rush
- 56:29Speaker 8: and just like started posting videos and just having fun
- 56:31Speaker 8: with it. Then I started doing some like catching cook stuff.
- 56:34Speaker 8: And I was like, Oh, I really like like cooking
- 56:35Speaker 8: a lot. And I've had this passion forever, but I
- 56:38Speaker 8: was like, I'll never want to like make my passion,
- 56:40Speaker 8: my job. Cause it'll ruin it is what I thought
- 56:42Speaker 8: in my younger mind. And then, uh, I graduated school
- 56:46Speaker 8: and to get through school, I had a firewood business.
- 56:48Speaker 8: So I was cutting firewood in the valley and like
- 56:51Speaker 8: had to deal with like Yellowstone National Park. I started
- 56:52Speaker 8: in high school and it was all really good. And I,
- 56:55Speaker 8: you know, finished college, graduated, sold the firewood business. And
- 56:58Speaker 8: then I started like just working construction, trying to figure
- 57:00Speaker 8: it out. And everyone's like, why wouldn't you keep the
- 57:03Speaker 8: firewood business? You know, I was like, I.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Don't want to cut firewood the rest of my life.
- 57:06Speaker 8: What were you getting per cord? So I, when I
- 57:09Speaker 8: first started, I was 225 for pine, 275 for fir,
- 57:11Speaker 8: and then fur is just so questionable when you get it.
- 57:16Speaker 8: Like you can cut into it and it can be
- 57:18Speaker 8: like rotten or it can be like rock hard, still green.
- 57:21Speaker 8: So I just ended up switching to lodgepole pine. And then,
- 57:24Speaker 8: I mean, after COVID, cause I started the business in
- 57:26Speaker 8: high school, which was my senior year. So it was 2020,
- 57:29Speaker 8: 2019 with just like a log splitter and a chainsaw.
- 57:33Speaker 8: And then it started growing and I got like a
- 57:35Speaker 8: commercial like processor and stuff. And I just switched only
- 57:38Speaker 8: to like lodgepole pine. And then I would just do
- 57:40Speaker 8: like 16 inch cuts and it's all split, delivered and
- 57:42Speaker 8: like nothing else. Cause people get, Can I.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Ask you a question? This is a regional question. If
- 57:47Speaker 1: I say to you, if I say to you, I would, no,
- 57:53Speaker 1: I say to you, I would like to buy a Rick.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm talking about? Yeah.
- 57:57Speaker 8: It's like a third of an actual cord.
- 57:59Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 58:00Speaker 8: Yeah. Because the cord is, it's a four by four
- 58:03Speaker 8: by eight, which I'm not sure.
- 58:05Speaker 1: 16 inch logs.
- 58:05Speaker 8: What's the cubic?
- 58:07Speaker 1: Is it 128?
- 58:07Speaker 8: 128 cubic feet. So it doesn't matter what the measurement
- 58:11Speaker 8: is as long as it's 128 cubic.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but people don't want four-foot logs.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 1: They want 16s. Definitely. A rick is a face cord. Yeah.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I don't want to go down that hole.
- 58:21Speaker 8: A lot of firewood stuff. Just bringing me back.
- 58:24Speaker 4: Just made steam stay.
- 58:26Speaker 1: We had no idea you were a firewood man.
- 58:28Speaker 8: Stubbs Firewood. It was my business, my first business. It
- 58:30Speaker 8: was pretty fun.
- 58:31Speaker 2: I want to jump from firewood to the final deal.
- 58:34Speaker 2: So the final deal, how many people are left? When
- 58:36Speaker 2: you go into the final challenge, where you got to
- 58:39Speaker 2: cook your meat, you got to cook your big meal.
- 58:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Your showcase personal meal. How many people are there?
- 58:46Speaker 8: So the last episode, there's eight of us in the finale.
- 58:50Speaker 8: And so the night before, it was funny, they kind
- 58:53Speaker 8: of told us like, hey, it's going to be eight
- 58:54Speaker 8: of you. This is the most info we got on
- 58:56Speaker 8: the challenges.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Oh, it's going to be what?
- 58:58Speaker 8: There's going to be eight of us in the finale,
- 59:00Speaker 8: the night before.
- 59:01Speaker 1: I understand.
- 59:01Speaker 8: Eight cooks, yeah.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 59:02Speaker 8: And they were like, this is the first time we
- 59:05Speaker 8: got any info about what the challenge is going to
- 59:06Speaker 8: be about. They're like, you're going to make breakfast, lunch,
- 59:08Speaker 8: and dinner tomorrow.
- 59:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 59:09Speaker 8: Like, Just think of any ideas for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
- 59:12Speaker 8: We're going to throw some twists in there, obviously. And
- 59:15Speaker 8: they're asking us all in this little meeting, the culinary directors,
- 59:17Speaker 8: because They get you what you need as far as
- 59:19Speaker 8: ingredients go.
- 59:20Speaker 1: So they're running back and forth to the store.
- 59:22Speaker 8: Yeah, yep, essentially. And so before we flew, before I
- 59:25Speaker 8: even left Montana, every cook was allowed five additional ingredients.
- 59:29Speaker 8: So they gave us an entire pantry list, and it
- 59:30Speaker 8: was just massive. And I just sifted through it, and
- 59:32Speaker 8: they're like, five things that you want that aren't on
- 59:34Speaker 8: the list. And so I asked for taro root, huckleberries,
- 59:41Speaker 8: elk tenderloin, Anaheim chili peppers, and Oaxaca cheese.
- 59:46Speaker 1: But this is when there's still 100 of you.
- 59:48Speaker 8: Yes, there's still 100 of us. And so I asked
- 59:51Speaker 8: for these ingredients because I was like, if I can
- 59:53Speaker 8: use these and highlight these, that would just be fun
- 59:54Speaker 8: for me. You know, like, this is cool. Like, there's
- 59:57Speaker 8: no way they're going to find this stuff probably anyways.
- 59:59Speaker 8: Send it out. Get on the show. I cooked, I think,
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: eight meals before the finale. And every time, I used
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: like the Anaheim peppers and Oaxaca cheese a couple different times,
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: like in Mexican dishes. But the huckleberries, the taro root,
- 1:00:12Speaker 8: and the elk, I could never find a way to
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: make it make sense. And so I was like, I'm
- 1:00:15Speaker 8: not going to force this in there. when it's not necessary.
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: You just need to follow the challenges and hope for
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: the best. So the night before, they're asking everybody, what
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: do you guys need for ingredients? And someone's like, oh,
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: do you have this sea bass? And someone else is like,
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: oh yeah, I might use that too. And I was like,
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: do you guys have my elk tenderloin? And everyone around me,
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: all the other cooks are like, don't worry, no one's
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: going to touch your elk tenderloin. We don't even know
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: what that is. And then the lady was like, yeah,
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: you know how hard it was to find the huckleberries too?
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: Because this was in March.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: They had it.
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: They found frozen huckleberries. And so they're like, we have
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: your huckleberry. She's like, those took a week to get.
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: And she's like, your elk took two weeks to get
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: and they kept it frozen. So it was still good. Um,
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: but I had no idea like what it looked like
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: or anything like that. So they had all of my
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: stuff there. The next day, uh, eight of us start
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: out cooking breakfast and they have, you have to make
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: something stacked or stuffed. And so the day before I
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: had made like this chili relleno inspired pizza. And so
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: I was like, I can't make like a Mexican and like,
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: I want to do like a chili quiles, but I
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: was like, I can't do that. It's so similar to
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: like yesterday's dish.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Do you have, do you have, Family from Mexico?
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: Yeah, my grandma and my mom are from Mexico.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Great, okay.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:18Speaker 8: And so, yeah, there's a lot of- I figured it
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: must be a connection.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: And so, I decided to make a tiramisu crepe. And
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: I made that. And I was like, I'm going to
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: show off that I can do a little dessert kind
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: of stuff.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Dude, you're way beyond me, man. I don't even know
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: where to begin on that.
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: Well, it went well. I survived that one. And then
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: the next one, there was five of us. And they're like,
- 1:01:40Speaker 8: all right, you have to highlight a jalapeno or an
- 1:01:42Speaker 8: apple in your lunch dish. And Terry looks at me,
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: he's like, Bryce, what are you going to do? And
- 1:01:46Speaker 8: I'm like, come on. Obviously, I'm going to do a jalapeno.
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: It makes sense. I'm going to use that as my
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: highlighted ingredient. And so I made a shrimp ceviche tostada.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: And I used the jalapeno four different ways. So I
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: did like a... In the ceviche, there was raw jalapeno.
- 1:02:04Speaker 8: I did a chipotle powder, which is just a dried jalapeno.
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: And I tossed the tostadas in that. So they had
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: like a dusting of that. I charred a jalapeno and
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: made like an aioli. And that was like my... sauce
- 1:02:14Speaker 8: base on the bottom. And then at the very end,
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: I just cut up some slices and like toss them
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: cornstarch and fried them and have like crispy jalapenos on
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: top and survive that. And so now it's just two cooks, uh,
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: me and this guy, Doug, we make it into the finale.
- 1:02:27Speaker 8: And so right before, um, we go to our little break,
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: Terry's like, this is the final challenge. It's like make
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: a dinner worth $ 215, 000. This is the most important dinner
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: of your life. And he's like, you can make whatever
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: you want. And then he let us go outside for
- 1:02:42Speaker 8: like a half an hour. And we couldn't have our
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: phones or anything like that. But you just kind of
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: sit out and wait.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: They don't want you looking up recipes. I don't know.
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: Maybe that like, yeah, that's that's a part of it.
- 1:02:51Speaker 8: Like we were allowed to have a little notebook of
- 1:02:53Speaker 8: recipes that we could write down and it had to
- 1:02:54Speaker 8: be certain size, you know, all those things. So you
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: could check that. Yeah, you couldn't have your phone at all.
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: And they were resetting the kitchen, too. So after you cook,
- 1:03:01Speaker 8: they have to reset it. So the judges come out
- 1:03:03Speaker 8: and then they actually brought in a live audience, too,
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: for the final cook. So they brought 100 people in.
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: And so when we came back in, I was like, oh,
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: here we go. You know, I thought it was going.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: To be just me.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: But the time I was out there, I was like
- 1:03:17Speaker 8: thinking about like, what am I going to make? And
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: it hit me right away. I was like, there's three
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: ingredients I haven't used. And I was like, all three
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: of those ingredients are like part of like the story
- 1:03:25Speaker 8: of my life. Like that's like what I am about.
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: Like I elk every week, you know, huckleberries are from Montana.
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: The tar root, I got it because I had it
- 1:03:31Speaker 8: in Vietnam and I've been lucky to travel a lot
- 1:03:34Speaker 8: like for my age. And So I had tar root
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: frites there and I was like, I'm going to incorporate
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: that too somehow. And then I did like a smoky
- 1:03:41Speaker 8: corn puree as well, like as like an ode to
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: my grandma. Like I remember her flipping whole corn on
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: the cob, like her bare hands, you know. And so
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: I did that as well. And so I made like
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: a seared elk tenderloin with a huckleberry reduction, tar root frites,
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: and then a smoky corn puree.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Kick Doug's ass. Yeah. Kick Doug's ass.
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: So as I was thinking about it, I was like,
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: it just felt more and more like every part of
- 1:04:03Speaker 8: it was like me in Montana. And then I'm like, man,
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: I was like, I'm going to pitch this to the judges. Like,
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: this is how like, I'm going to, you know, this
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: is the story of my life. That's the name of
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: this dish. And I was thinking about it, went in, cooked.
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: And it was so funny because like, normally I was
- 1:04:16Speaker 8: doing pretty good. I had all my stuff organized while
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: I was cooking. And I had every single bowl, mixer,
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: tasting spoon, like all laid out over like two benches
- 1:04:24Speaker 8: because we had the whole kitchen. And they were walking
- 1:04:26Speaker 8: by like, Bryce, what is going on? Like you have
- 1:04:28Speaker 8: stuff everywhere. And I had so many things working at
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: the same time, like getting the huckleberries reduced, frying those
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: taro fruit reeds. You got to soak them in water
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: to get all the toxins and all that starch out
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: of there. And I overcooked my elk tenderloin.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: Because I got them and I cut open the bag
- 1:04:44Speaker 8: and it wasn't a whole tenderloin. They were pre-sliced and
- 1:04:46Speaker 8: they were like maybe an inch thick. And so I
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: saw him, I was like, all right, I got to
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: be very, very careful about how I cook these. So
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: I seared them hot, fast, and then butter basted. And
- 1:04:56Speaker 8: I was like, I'll just set them in the oven,
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: let them keep warm. And then I'll cut them at
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: the end. They'll have plenty of time to rest, cut
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: into them. And it was like a gradient, like medium
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: to like medium. Well, it's like cut out the medium wells,
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: you know, and like try to put as many mediums.
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: There's a little bit of medium.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:14Speaker 8: And it was, it was tough. Cause I was like,
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: it was so funny. Cause the one thing that I
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: should have been able to nail was that I like
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: that elk tenderloin.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:21Speaker 8: I should have been fine on that. But, Thankfully, I
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: put so much work into all the other ingredients, you know,
- 1:05:26Speaker 8: it highlighted like everything else and it came together as
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: one dish. And then funny enough, Doug, he cooked a
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: pork chop. He did like a, I think it was
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: some Chinese like pork chop recipe. And he grabbed a
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: big old pork chop. When he pulled it out, it
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: was raw in the center. So he had to cut
- 1:05:40Speaker 8: it in half and quick pants here real quick to
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: just get it up to temp and he dried it out.
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: And so when they were like, you guys both overcooked
- 1:05:47Speaker 8: your proteins. I was like, here we go. You know,
- 1:05:50Speaker 8: it's like now it's like, just based on the overall
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: at this point. And I had more components. Um, and yeah,
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: I mean, I thought, you know, I thought I had
- 1:05:58Speaker 8: a really good dish.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: So do you think if you, do you think if
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: you'd have done that pork chop perfect, you'd have beat you?
- 1:06:03Speaker 8: That I don't know. I think it's, it's tough based
- 1:06:07Speaker 8: on those two dishes alone. Like, I feel like I
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: put a lot into like that, the work that went
- 1:06:12Speaker 8: into that dish. Um, and it wasn't like my, my
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: steak wasn't gray. You know what I mean? Like it
- 1:06:16Speaker 8: was still like edible, but, Yeah, I don't know. I
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: think it still would have been close.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:21Speaker 8: But it definitely helped that he also overcooked his.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: So do they come marching out with a giant check?
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: Not so.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Those big ones where it takes two people to hold
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: them up.
- 1:06:33Speaker 8: So how it works is I found out I won.
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: Confetti fell and everything. There were some people that were
- 1:06:38Speaker 8: in the show that were competing that I was friends
- 1:06:40Speaker 8: with at that point that came in the stands and
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: watched because they hadn't flown out yet. They all came down,
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: hugged me, congratulated me.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:46Speaker 8: Then they took some pictures in front of like they
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: had this big sign with the money up because the
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: money would go up based on like how the show
- 1:06:51Speaker 8: worked and took some pictures of that. And then it
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: was like, that was it. It was done. I walked outside.
- 1:06:56Speaker 8: This lady came up to me, handed me a piece
- 1:06:58Speaker 8: of paper. She's like, sign here for like agreeing to
- 1:07:00Speaker 8: accept the money. Sign that. Did interviews until like midnight.
- 1:07:03Speaker 8: And then I didn't get the check until like.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Three weeks ago. They're going to tax that check so hard.
- 1:07:08Speaker 8: Well, yeah, we'll see. I mean, they sent the whole amount.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: So.
- 1:07:11Speaker 8: I'm sure there's going to be some withholdings I'll have to.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: It's just, yeah, like I was saying earlier, man, like
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: someone writes, you know, like when people win lotteries, whatever.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: If also someone's like, hey, Bryce, here's $ 215, 000. They're going
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: to be like, I'll take some of that.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: That's easy money right there.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: It just seems like maybe I'm wrong. It just seems
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: like they're going to hit it with like the extra
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: special tax.
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: Well, I think like the Super Bowl players got taxed
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: by playing the Super Bowl in L.A., buy LA's California's
- 1:07:41Speaker 8: tax much harder than they would have somewhere else with
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: their winnings. So I know California has a stipulate on winnings.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: It's still a nice chunk, man. What are you going
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: to do?
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: Yeah, so it was funny.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: What are you going to do with the money, I mean?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Then I'm going to ask you, what are you going
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: to do?
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: He's got a finance degree. He's been listening. He's not
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: going to make any money.
- 1:08:03Speaker 8: I was working in the oil fields, that part of it.
- 1:08:05Speaker 8: So yeah, I was doing the construction thing. after I
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: sold the firewood business, got a private chef gig just
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: by like happen chance. Then that's when I was like,
- 1:08:12Speaker 8: this is what I want to do. Everything I want
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: to do is like right here, pursued that, um, doing
- 1:08:17Speaker 8: freelance stuff. And then, yeah, so I, I realized I
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: wanted to go to pastry school last year. Um, I
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: got back from my trip and I was like, I
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: need to focus up here and make some money and
- 1:08:27Speaker 8: kind of chase this dream. And so I was like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 8: how am I going to do that? My brothers worked
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: in the oil fields. They hooked me up with a
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: job and I started doing that. Um, Pastry school to
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: save up money for it. The show came in the
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: midst of all this Oh, so then I went on
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: the show I won I didn't get any of that
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: money Like they told me they were gonna give me
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: any of the money until the last episode came out
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: which came out in like Middle of July and so
- 1:08:48Speaker 8: pastry school was coming up in March and I was
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: like I need to pay for.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: This They didn't give you your scratch until nothing.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: They gave me my... I got a $ 50 per diem
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: per day for dinner.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: That's redundant. Yeah.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: They gave me that.
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: It's per diem.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: It's per diem. I've had this argument.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it makes sense.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: Yeah, is that....
- 1:09:04Speaker 8: Anyways, they gave me that. So they sent me like
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: 800 bucks, which was, I guess, nice for the time
- 1:09:10Speaker 8: I was down there.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: But that was it. So I was like, I got
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: to go back to work.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: And you had to sign all kinds of stuff to
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: keep your mouth shut.
- 1:09:15Speaker 8: So many NDAs.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: Like I came home, I was like.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: You can't be talking about it.
- 1:09:19Speaker 8: I was hugging Terry Crews, and the next day, I was, like,
- 1:09:20Speaker 8: on a flight back in Montana, like, oh, going back
- 1:09:22Speaker 8: to work.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: In North Dakota, you know?
- 1:09:25Speaker 8: Which was kind of nice, because I was away from
- 1:09:27Speaker 8: all of it back there. But yeah, I worked another month,
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: and then saved up the money so I could start
- 1:09:32Speaker 8: pastry school. Then I left for France at the end
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: of March, and then the show came out in June,
- 1:09:37Speaker 8: and I got back home in July. So it was
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: kind of great, like, being away from Bozeman and, like,
- 1:09:42Speaker 8: small towns. Like, if I go to the Ridge, you know,
- 1:09:44Speaker 8: someone's like, did you win?
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Did you win?
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: And I can't say anything, so... It's just hard. So
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: thank goodness I was gone.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: You'd be like, I didn't lose.
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: I didn't lose, yeah. But what I would say, I
- 1:09:54Speaker 8: was like, would I have gone back to work at
- 1:09:55Speaker 8: the oil fields if I won? And then it shut
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: everybody up, right? Like, oh yeah, you would never go
- 1:09:59Speaker 8: back to work if you won that. But funny enough,
- 1:10:00Speaker 8: I just didn't have any money. I didn't win the
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: show yet. I didn't get the money yet. So yeah,
- 1:10:04Speaker 8: then I did France for three months, came back, was
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: still waiting on the check.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: And then, so I just- So three months of pastry school.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: So it was in- I don't want to like pry,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: but like how expensive is three months of pastry school?
- 1:10:17Speaker 8: It's not, it was actually, I spent a lot of
- 1:10:18Speaker 8: time trying to find the cheapest one.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: I'm just cheap at heart. Like I'm from Churchill and
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: everyone's like, oh, it's because you're like, you're from a
- 1:10:25Speaker 8: Dutch community.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: That's why you're cheap.
- 1:10:26Speaker 8: And I was like, oh man.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: That's why my old man, he wouldn't go to a
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Hollander's garage sale.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: My old man.
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I knew I got you guys numbers. I was raised
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: around this, man.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:38Speaker 8: So- I took my time to find a cheap one
- 1:10:41Speaker 8: and like all said and done with like housing three
- 1:10:44Speaker 8: months and like school, I think it was like 10
- 1:10:46Speaker 8: or 11 grand.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:47Speaker 8: So it was, I thought it was pretty reasonable instead
- 1:10:49Speaker 8: of like liquor.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: But you're just doing this as like career development and self-improvement.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Like you're paying.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: So like I, I wanted to be like, I'm a
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: savory chef. I like cooking is what I like, but
- 1:10:58Speaker 8: in my mind, I think like the best chefs are
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: well-rounded and have, you know, a little bit of everything.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: And so I was like, so you're serious about this
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: whole thing, man.
- 1:11:05Speaker 8: Very, I would say.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: Like now for sure.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 8: It's like, my life. But yeah, so I did that
- 1:11:12Speaker 8: and I came back, was waiting for the show to end,
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: kind of seeing whatever opportunities came out of that. And
- 1:11:17Speaker 8: then randomly got like a DM to go to Alaska
- 1:11:21Speaker 8: and go cook on a yacht because their chef had
- 1:11:23Speaker 8: like flaked out and I'd never done anything like that.
- 1:11:25Speaker 8: Like the most I've provisioned for was like four days
- 1:11:29Speaker 8: and I was like, still could run back to Bozeman.
- 1:11:30Speaker 8: And it was for like a couple guys at a ranch.
- 1:11:33Speaker 8: So I got called out for that. And the day
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: before I left, I got my check from the show.
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: So I was like, Last month, I finally got the money.
- 1:11:40Speaker 8: So it took a while. But nothing yet. I bought
- 1:11:42Speaker 8: a laptop. That's probably....
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: You're hoarding that money. You're hoarding that money.
- 1:11:47Speaker 8: That might be my biggest purchase. It's like someone was
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: joking the other day, like, your laptop's worth more than
- 1:11:52Speaker 8: your car. And I was like, that's how it should be.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: But dude, now you're going... So you're going to Spain now.
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: And you're going to work in a Michelin star restaurant.
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: So how long are you signed up for? Indefinite? No.
- 1:12:03Speaker 8: So how it works... It's, I'm doing like a visa-free
- 1:12:06Speaker 8: travel deal. And so I didn't get like a visa
- 1:12:09Speaker 8: approved to like work there. But it's essentially, it's called
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: a stage, which just means like intern in French. And
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: like all chefs would know like a stage. It's like
- 1:12:16Speaker 8: you go intern at a restaurant, maybe get paid. Like
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: it's kind of a gray area and they're still working
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: those things out. But like, I'm almost guaranteeing I don't
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: get paid at all. But the point is you're under
- 1:12:28Speaker 8: the best chefs in the world learning like the craziest
- 1:12:31Speaker 8: kind of knowledge, technique you can take away from that.
- 1:12:34Speaker 8: And then it's also a resume builder. Like if I
- 1:12:36Speaker 8: put like, this is a three-star, if I survive, which
- 1:12:39Speaker 8: I'm really hoping I do, like I can put like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 8: I staged at a three-star Michelin restaurant and like adds
- 1:12:44Speaker 8: weight to it. Doing private chef stuff, it's like, it's
- 1:12:46Speaker 8: big for that because people are always curious, you know,
- 1:12:48Speaker 8: like where are you, are you classically trained? Have you
- 1:12:51Speaker 8: been here, you know? And so, yeah, while I was
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: in Alaska cooking on the boat, I got that opportunity
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: offered to me. And so I was kind of just
- 1:13:01Speaker 8: figuring out like, am I going to do this finally?
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: And it's like, this is what I want to do.
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: And so, yeah, I leave on five days for that.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: So what do you see like in five years?
- 1:13:13Speaker 8: That's a tough question.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: I don't, what's it going to look like?
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: I feel like I can't even do like anything past
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: two months.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: It's too hot right now. It's too crazy.
- 1:13:20Speaker 8: Too much going on every, I think I've been like
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: just taking each opportunity as I can. Um, for me,
- 1:13:26Speaker 8: the show was a huge booster, just like the money obviously.
- 1:13:29Speaker 8: And then it gave me kind of the confidence and like,
- 1:13:31Speaker 8: was like, solidified what i like what i think i
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: already knew um but now it's like you know i
- 1:13:37Speaker 8: spent a lot of time i was cutting fire i
- 1:13:39Speaker 8: was in college like not pursuing food really like intensely
- 1:13:43Speaker 8: and so it's just growth i think if i can
- 1:13:46Speaker 8: just go and be a sponge everywhere and just take
- 1:13:48Speaker 8: every opportunity to learn like even this alaska trip i
- 1:13:51Speaker 8: had a half day in juno which like i don't
- 1:13:54Speaker 8: know if you guys have been to juno but they
- 1:13:55Speaker 8: don't have a whole foods or anything like that and
- 1:13:57Speaker 8: so I had a half day to provision for two
- 1:14:00Speaker 8: weeks worth of food for 11 people, three meals a day.
- 1:14:02Speaker 8: And I've never done anything like that in my life,
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: you know? And so I did that whole, um, experience
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: cook for two weeks for these guests, you know, got
- 1:14:11Speaker 8: a lot of fresh catch. It's cooking stuff. Like I've
- 1:14:13Speaker 8: never even seen before or heard of before I made
- 1:14:16Speaker 8: my own tasting menu. And like, it was like a
- 1:14:18Speaker 8: taste of Alaska and it was like a six course
- 1:14:19Speaker 8: deal for the guests. It was super fun. Cause it
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: was just like all making up on the fly. And
- 1:14:24Speaker 8: then after that experience, I'm like, I learned so much.
- 1:14:26Speaker 8: I opened up kind of the yachting chef world to myself.
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: And so I don't want to say like, I'm going
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: to do this now for the next five years. And
- 1:14:33Speaker 8: the five years I want to do this, or I'm
- 1:14:34Speaker 8: going to start a restaurant. Because when you do those things,
- 1:14:36Speaker 8: you're kind of shackled to it for the time. And
- 1:14:39Speaker 8: so I feel like for me, I'm 24. If I
- 1:14:41Speaker 8: could spend like the next five years taking opportunities like
- 1:14:44Speaker 8: that and just learning and absorbing and growing as much
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: as I can and then go from there.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Thinking about that money, man, I know a dude in
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: Southwest Minnesota that's.
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: Made $ 600.
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: 50 cents, right?
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: I think I could swing 50 cents.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Dude, congratulations. Thank you. It's great, man. Yeah, yeah. You
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: got to be proud. It's such a cool accomplishment.
- 1:15:05Speaker 8: It was cool, yeah.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: You got, like, obviously you got tons of ideas.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: You got a pretty cool career laid out ahead of you.
- 1:15:11Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: The money's cool, but it's bigger than that.
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: I think it always has been for me. I think, yeah, like,
- 1:15:17Speaker 8: getting out of college, you know, I was just working
- 1:15:19Speaker 8: whatever I could to travel. and eat and taste food.
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: And everyone was kind of like, you know, buying houses
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: and stuff like that and getting married. And I was like,
- 1:15:26Speaker 8: am I doing the right thing here? And then when
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: that show came around, I think every part of what
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: I'd been doing kind of got brought there.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Is your grandma still alive? She is, yeah. But she's proud.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: She was stoked. She's got to be excited.
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: She loved that, the chili relleno. Pizza that I made.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: You better go cook her a nice meal You owe
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: her a nice meal And.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: So if folks want to watch it now They gotta
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: go to HBO.
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: Yeah it's on HBO Max and Amazon Prime And then
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: I don't know what Food Network's on Like I know
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: they do reruns and stuff on TV And then I
- 1:15:55Speaker 8: don't know if they're on like Fubo or any of
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: those other apps or what not But yeah.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Excellent man Alright Bryce Stubbs Churchill, Montana Big time food
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: competition champion Private chef, Michelin star, protege.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Congratulations. Thank you. Thanks, buddy. Appreciate it. You can go
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: ahead and hang out if you want. We're going to
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: talk about Lake Ontario.
- 1:16:24Speaker 8: I want to know what's going on with that. Is
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: that real?
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: Define real.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: We're going to get into it. We're going to get
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: into it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: Like, you all know by now, except Bryce, apparently.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: Which says a lot about him. Yeah. It's a good thing.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Doesn't spend his time on the dumb shit.
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: In the midst of a tariff-induced trade war with the
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: evil Empire of Canada, Trump says Lake Ontario is now
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: Lake America. So I just want to hit a few
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: points before we do a little roundtable discussion on it.
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: Number one. Lake America implies that we have some kind
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: of American ownership over that lake, but that's not the case,
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: and Trump doesn't have the authority to rename an international
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: body of water. He's got it all backwards when it
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: comes to history and geography. Lake Ontario is not named
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: after the Canadian province. It's, in fact, the opposite. The
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: word Ontario has indigenous origins that go back hundreds of years.
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: It was in use long before the United States existed,
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: long before Canada as a country existed. Ontario didn't adopt,
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: the province of Ontario didn't adopt that name until 1867.
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: So there was obviously some reactions to all this. Google
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: caved very quickly. I just read Apple caved.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: Can I just tell you right now, I put in
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: Lake America and.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: On the map, Google Maps, it does say Lake America,
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: but in the search bar, it says Lake Ontario and
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: then in parentheses, America.
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: Right. You want to know something funny? If you Google
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: it in Canada, it's not Lake America.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: But I don't know that they can not... I don't know.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: That they can not do that? Yeah, but go on,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: doesn't matter.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: No, they caved, man. They're like, they're currying favor, I believe.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Oh, for sure, yeah. There's a kissing of the ring, yeah.
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: But getting back to the indigenous origins, so like there
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: is a reaction from some Native American groups to this, obviously.
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: The Wendat Nation, Grand Chief Pierre Picard expressed shock over
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: the decisions. He stated it was an attempt to erase
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: indigenous history and noted that the Wendat originally named the
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: lake I'm going to say Ontario, it's like some version
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: of that that I may not be, you know, might
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: not pronounce the right way, but either way, Ontario means
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: With all due respect, I don't think it was an
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: attempt to erase Indigenous history. I don't think that was considered.
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: I get it, but this is the reaction from the
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: people that came up with the name.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: Understood. That was not intentional.
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I get it.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: Go on.
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: It's a reaction to something important to these people. Seneca
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: Nation President J. Conrad Seneca issued a strong statement condemning
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: the rename as unprecedented and a sign of blatant disrespect.
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: And he noted it violates the historic 1794 treaty of,
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: I'm not going to pronounce this right, Canandaigua, which I'm
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: not sure.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Exactly what that means.
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: But again, it's an attempt to erase indigenous history. Moving
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: on from those points, in the United States, there are
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: at least 12 geographic locations and municipalities that are named Ontario,
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: you know, towns or whatever.
- 1:20:04Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: Um, countless businesses and schools also use the name Ontario. Um,
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: this is, this, I think is funny. Um, cause I'd
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: forgot this from my childhood. The great lakes are typically
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: remembered with the acronym homes, but now it would be shame.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Superior here on America, Michigan. Yeah. Okay. Now I got
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: it now. Shame.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: Um, And then we had maybe the most important point
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: come in that someone pointed out.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: Yeah. This trumps all. Oh, yeah. this is the real
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: mind bender.
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: I doubt Trump's ever even heard this song. If he has,
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: he wouldn't be able to tell you.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: I don't think, cause you know, like all the weird
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: gold things hanging up in there in the office.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: It just does. I don't get a wreck of the
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: Edmund Fitzgerald vibe.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: No, I get more like, yeah, like George W. Bush
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: had like a closet full of junk they took from
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Saddam Hussein.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: And that's like now decorating the office.
- 1:21:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: So what we're getting at is the song we talk
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: about all the time, Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Edmund Fitzgerald. There's a line in that song that goes,
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: and farther below Lake Ontario, Nate, move your, I can't
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: read it. And farther below Lake Ontario takes in what
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Lake Erie can send her. And Steve was very upset.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: Farther below Lake Ontario.
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: Very upset because there's just, the rhyming just does not
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: work for that.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: I called a prominent songwriter. I don't want to drag
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: his name into this.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: I called a prominent songwriter and I said, dude, what
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: happens now with the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: He said, no, there's not a problem because they're both
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: four syllables.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: And then he thought about it. He goes, oh, there
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: is a problem. I said, can you fix it for me?
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Can you propose a fix? He puzzled over it for
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: a day and then did a thing not many people do.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: He texted and said, I can't figure it out. I
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: have to move on.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: To other things in my life.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: He gave up trying to fix the song.
- 1:22:10Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: We brought it to Reed's Piano News.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Yes. How do you fix the problem for Gordon Lightfoot? Reed,
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: can you cue it up?
- 1:22:24Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Here's the best he can do.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: Lake of Lake Ontario being renamed Lake America. Everybody's asking
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: one question, and that's, how is this going to affect
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: Gordon Lightfoot's seven-minute sea shanty, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: where he says Lake Ontario exactly once?
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: And I think we've got options.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: Michigan steams like a young man's dream. The islands and
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: the bays.
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: Are for sportsmen.
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: Lake America sits down farther below. We've got buckies and
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: punt guns and freedom.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: Any songwriters that want to write in and take another
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: stab at what in the world happens now to Gordon
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: Lightfoot's masterpiece.
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: Yeah, you can't mess with that.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Does he get a fine?
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: I know he's dead, but say he wasn't. Does he
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: get a fine every time he sings it?
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: I think he'd punch Trump in the face.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Well, he's a Canuck.
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: I think he'd punch Trump in the face.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Yeah, big news. Okay, Yanni.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: That's all you got to say about that, huh?
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: Gee, what more is there to say? What do you
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: do about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald? Songwriters, please
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: come together.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: I wasn't talking about the song.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: No, I got no more to say on it. I'm
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: still in shock. I'm still in shock. Hunters! It's a
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Great Lakes man. An ancestral Great Lakes man.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: Hunters carrying sidearms for bear protection in Colorado may find
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: their caution well justified this season.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Wow, that's a real statement right there.
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: I came up with that.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: You wrote that?
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I did.
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: That's kind of sensational, isn't it?
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: Exactly. I wanted my little segment here to start off
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: with a bang.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: If it was sensational, he would never have used the
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: word may.
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: Well, that's true.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: It would have been Will. Will.
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: Well, I was thinking about how does this actually relate
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: to us? Because as you'll see, a lot of this
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: stuff that's happening with these bears is not really out
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: in the wild. And in the past, we've covered stories.
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: It was so long ago that it must have just
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: been on the regular Meteor podcast. But where people were
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: shooting themselves in Colorado elk and deer camps with pistols.
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: And I think you were like, why are they even
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: carrying pistols?
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: In Colorado.
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: In Colorado.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Because they don't have grizzly bears.
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just black bears.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Well, one guy does. What was his name? Adam Greentree.
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: He has grizzlies in Colorado.
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: Convinced they're all over the place.
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I kind of remember that, too. Low mountain snowpack,
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: active wildfires, severe drought, and localized late spring freeze events
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: have heavily depleted natural food sources such as various fruits, nuts, plants,
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: and grasses, forcing black bears to travel into residential areas
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: in search of easy calories.
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: So much so that this year, up until now, well, no,
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: these numbers go until I found from January 1 to
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: August 13. In 2025... There were 3,115 reports. In the
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: same time period this year, 6,129. I'm going to put
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: that to our finance friend. Yeah. What percentage has it grown?
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: I'll tell you, Bright, twice as much. Is it because
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: they've got twice as many.
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: Bears now, a year later? I don't think so. But interestingly,
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: I did look up population of white bears in Colorado,
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: and it says 17,000 to 20,000, which I thought, that's
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: a hell of a lot of bears. That's got to
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: be like the most bears in any state besides Alaska.
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: Turns out, no, Colorado is actually 10th on the list.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: Alaska is number one, then California, Maine, Idaho. All these
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: states have 35,000 to 30,000, and then Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: is 24 to like 27,000. Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: I mean, that makes sense. Half the state of Colorado
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: is not bear country.
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: It's just like ag.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: That's a great point, man. You know, great point. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: But I bet you there's a lot of bears out
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: in that ag country these days. I don't know more
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: and more. I mean, just being back in the Midwest
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: when I was there for a wedding this past weekend,
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: like there's the same thing. conversations we're having here now
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: and people in Colorado are having, it's happening in like
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: Three Rivers, Michigan. They're like, oh yeah, there was a
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: bear that came in to, you know, walk through the
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: Walmart parking lot or something like that. Let's see, where
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: was I?
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: It's about to hit like the main time of year
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: when Colorado or any state has a lot of human
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: and bear encounters. And that's because bears are going into hyperphagia. Phil?
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: Remember this?
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, dude. This is the early days.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: We'll blast from the past for you.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: You guys know the word hyperphagic?
- 1:27:40Speaker 7: Heard it.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: He's like eating a whole bunch. Yeah. So.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: Yeah, like they say that in the fall they go
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: into a hyperphagic state, like.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Just eating around the clock.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: Now thinking back on it, we have watched them where
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: they're so focused on eating that then when they're in
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: a spot that doesn't have food, they run. Like you
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: watch them digging ground squirrels and they just run from
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: burrow to burrow. Like when they get done with one
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: burrow and catch the squirrel.
- 1:28:09Speaker 9: Because there's nothing in between, so what's the point?
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so maybe she just was up in that rocky junk.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Because now that she's just down there pounding blueberries like
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: nobody's business and has no idea about this gut pile.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: So it's like, she's just like, I'm not going to
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: stand here with nothing to eat.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: I'm going to run.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: Which seems like its own sort of inefficiency, like you're
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: consuming energy, but they must just have it.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: They worked out the math on it.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: That's good, Phil.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: Thank you, Phil.
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: That's a good episode. What was that one called?
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: You remember no it's fun that was a fun one
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: hyperfaget you were there too oh yeah what were.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: You doing on that one You're just WPN?
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: WPN. Nice.
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: All in caribou meat around watching out for grizzly bears.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: Dirk climbed out of the tent one night to take
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: a piss. It's never really dark out. It's kind of dusky.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: He climbs out to take a piss. There's a grizzly
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: standing in the middle.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: Of the tent.
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: It was her with her cup. It was the same man, yeah.
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: Yeah, hyperphagia. So they're trying to eat a whole bunch.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: They got no berries, no grass, nothing in the woods.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: Because it's so dry.
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: They're running from trash can to trash can.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: In like the last month or so, uh, there was
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: a steamboat Springs residence attack where bear, uh, went through
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: a sliding glass door and then struck a woman in
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: the face, uh, in Aspen there in a park.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: Uh, he entered a sliding glass door or went through
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: a sliding.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: Well, he opened the door actually. Um, yeah. Uh, uh,
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: In a park in Aspen at 3 a.m. on August 19th,
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: a bear bit a homeless man in the head. No. Yep,
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: bear was euthanized for doing that one. Down in Crested Butte,
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: a bear got into a house and then started a
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: kitchen fire.
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: There was one in Eaglevale where you and I used
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: to I got attacked in a laundromat there, like something
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: like that.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: That's the last thing on your mind at a laundromat, man.
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: It had something to do with laundromat.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: I've been in a laundromat since graduate school, but when
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: I was, I was not thinking about bear attacks.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: So they're around. I was hoping to talk to somebody.
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: CPW didn't get back to me about this because my
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: main question was like, why? It just seems like this
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: happens from time to time. that the bears are just
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: going to be hammering the trash cans more. But this
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: year just seems like there's way more attacks actually on
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: the humans. It's not just encounters. It's like, why are
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: they biting, swiping, actually messing with the humans? So my
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: main question, there is a new law in Colorado that
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: just took effect. And they're basically, the law is making
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: it so that Instead of getting a ticket for knowingly
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: baiting a bear, which you can't do, now you can
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: get a ticket for just basically knowingly leaving food out
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: that you know a bear could come in contact with.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Got it.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: So if you're part of the problem, they can hit you.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: They don't have to give you a first-time warning. And
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: it looks like subsequent penalties can go from $ 2, 000 to $ 5, 000.
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: So this could be.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: Like a bird feeder.
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: Or is it just like garbage related?
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's up to the wardens probably
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: going to be issuing the ticket.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Oh, if they got to talk to you three times,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: $ 2, 000 to $ 5, 000 fine. Yeah, which is good, I think.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: I got a neighbor who would be eligible for that.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: I mean, they get visited all the time.
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: I don't know about how, where it was.
- 1:31:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: And I don't think that we have this in Bozeman,
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: but I don't know how it was down in Eagleville
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: where you were. But when we were up Valley, like
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: we had to have those bear proof trash containers.
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: Eagle was not, it didn't, I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: it does now.
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: My brother's in Salida. None. Just regular old trash cans.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: He says every morning right now, when he takes the
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: dog out for early morning walk, he just goes down
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: the alley. Every single trash can is knocked over.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Got it.
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: I don't know why that isn't more of a thing.
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: You don't have to, where.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: You are, you don't have to have lots of bins.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: In the winter, we put it out the night before.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: In the summer, you can't do that. You got to
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: wait and then rush it out there right when you
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: think the dude's coming, which means you'll miss the.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: Garbage all the damn time.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: I'm sitting on a two-week load right now for this
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: very reason.
- 1:32:24Speaker 8: That Highland Boulevard area over in Bozeman is where I
- 1:32:27Speaker 8: lived in college, and we'd have a black bear go
- 1:32:29Speaker 8: down the whole road every week and just take out
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: each trash can.
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: So I imagine that this is all sort of urban interface,
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: but there's plenty of bears still left out and about
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: in the woods that are going to be facing these
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: same challenges.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: What do you think hunters are going to or should do?
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: Season opened yesterday in Colorado.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: For bears. Uh-huh.
- 1:32:53Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: So I guess there's that. There's like, what do you
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: do if you're a bear hunter? And what if you
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: do if you're an elk hunter trying to not have
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: a mix up with a bear?
- 1:33:02Speaker 5: Those bears still got to drink water. Like hunt, you
- 1:33:05Speaker 5: know what I mean?
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: Hunt water.
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: You're going to find bears.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: I can't and never will.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: As long as I live, I don't care what happens,
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: ever find it myself to take a black bear serious
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: enough to carry black bear defense.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Not going to do it. I don't care what happens.
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: Oh, you said to stay bear safe. I thought you
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: said how to get one. I'm not worried about staying
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: safe in Colorado.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: Well, maybe not. So you're not, if you were to
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: go hunt and you're going to have a tent camp,
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: like a back, not a back country, just a wall
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: tent camp in the, let's say the flat tops for
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: a week. Would you do, you wouldn't do anything else
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: that you already, that you don't do?
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: I mean, I wouldn't leave food laying around, but no.
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: No.
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: Like, I don't think, I don't think these few attacks
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: are like a sign that bears are going to be
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: jumping dudes in the woods, like all over the place.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll put my food somewhere in my sleeping bag.
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: I cannot find it myself to get scared of a
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: black bear.
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: I mean, I've been backpack tent camping in Colorado and
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: had them walking around my tent at night. It's like not.
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: But this year is different. They don't have any.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: Food to eat.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: I still don't think they're going to start eating people.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: Brody was wondering if this means good or bad for
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: bear hunters. Like, does it mean that the habits change?
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: So it's like harder to anticipate them. Or does it
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: mean that they're out just.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: More visible.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: Just roaming.
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Roaming. Yeah.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: You'd think they'd be more visible. That's what I would think.
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: But the thing about Colorado too.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Oh, check this out. The other day.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: The other day. I don't know why he's keeping quiet
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: about it. He sends me a, he sends me a
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: way off. Nate sends me a way off video. Um,
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: where he's looking at the baldest 10,000 foot gravel ridgeline.
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: And he's like, is that a Wolverine? He sends me
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: a little clip. Cause like, what the hell is he
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: running around up there? Well, he gets home and is
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: able to look at it on something. And it's a
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: little shit and black bear.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Way up. Dude, there ain't even a bush in sight.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I mean, not even a bush. He's up there eating rocks, dude.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: And he's just probably dying.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: I wonder if it was that, do they do the
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: moth thing that the grizzlies do?
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: He was traveling, but I don't know. He was hurt.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm putting a lot onto him. I
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: don't know what he was doing. He was by himself.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: He was small.
- 1:35:21Speaker 6: But that was like 10 minutes after an antelope rolled
- 1:35:24Speaker 6: by at 10-5. I'd never seen an antelope up that high.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: It was crazy. Maybe he's hunting antelopes.
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: But the thing I was getting at in Colorado is,
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: I mean, you've seen it, especially down in Southern Colorado,
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: is they've got all that oak brush. So like a
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: berry failure isn't a total end of the world because
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: they can go to those acorns, but the berry failure here,
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: they don't got acorns to turn to. So I think
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: they're going to be out running around a bunch and
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: be good hunting.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Okay. All right, everybody.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Now, Earlier I talked about how if you're fixing to
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: get a suppressor, don't want the government telling you what
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: to do, now might be the time to strike.
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: Why?
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: How certain am I? Stay tuned for this interview, which
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: is going to close the show out. We're not coming
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: back to say goodbye.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: Stay tuned. You're going to learn a whole bunch. And
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: thanks for joining the show. And thanks for coming on, man.
- 1:36:24Speaker 8: Thanks for having me.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: Bryce Stubbs.
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: Thanks, Bryce. See you next week.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: Thank you. Okay, we're moving over to a report about.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: The sort of never-ending regulatory shifts around suppressors, which some
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: of you folks from old movies might know as silencers.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: But suppressors, things you put on the end of your gun,
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: on the end of your muzzle of your rifle, so
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: that you and your children don't have to damage your
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: ears when you go shooting. It's a phenomenal, phenomenal invention.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: I think one should sit in every gun case out there.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: It's a shifting, like I said, rapidly shifting environment around
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: these things. Hopefully in the long run, we're just headed
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: to a place where you can just go into a
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: sporting goods store or go online or whatever and just
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: get yourself one. But you got to jump through certain hoops.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: The hoops have changed. I feel like it's good news,
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: but I don't really know.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: It's confusing. Me and Nate Mason were just.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Talking about that these regulatory changes around suppressors are confusing.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: But here to clear it all up is the man
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: for the job, got a prize that knows more about
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: this than anybody, Brandon Maddox, who's the founder and CEO
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: of Silencer Central. So this guy has to pay attention
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: to this stuff. I'm going to intro it like this,
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: and he's going to explain what this means.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: He's here with us.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: This is in my notes. Here's what it says. A
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: District of Texas ruled in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: that key National Firearms Act registration requirements for items like
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: suppressors and short-barreled rifles are unconstitutional because Congress previously reduced
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: The NFA transfer tax stamps to zero.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: To $ 0.
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: If you took all 360, whatever the number is, million
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Americans out there, I think that 359,999,950.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Don't know what that means. Brandon, can you explain what
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: that means?
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: Sure.
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: Good question.
- 1:38:59Speaker 10: So basically what happened is a big, beautiful bill got
- 1:39:03Speaker 10: rid of the tax stamp. Tax stamp had been $ 200
- 1:39:05Speaker 10: since 1934. And when the tax stamp went away, some
- 1:39:09Speaker 10: gun rights groups got together and said, let's sue the
- 1:39:12Speaker 10: federal government and say that the registration of silencers is
- 1:39:17Speaker 10: unlawful because there's no longer a tax. Congress had written
- 1:39:20Speaker 10: underneath the tax code. And since it was underneath the
- 1:39:22Speaker 10: tax code, the assumption being that there should be some
- 1:39:25Speaker 10: tax revenue. And when it went to zero, there was.
- 1:39:28Speaker 9: No tax revenue.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: So, so when you say the $ 200 thing is like,
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: if you go, like, if I went to, if I
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: went to you or, uh, I go to silencer central
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: and I'm shopping, like part of the process is I
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: need to pay.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: I previously had to pay this 200 bucks.
- 1:39:45Speaker 9: Yeah, correct.
- 1:39:46Speaker 10: From like 1934 up till December 31st of 2025. So
- 1:39:51Speaker 10: essentially January 1st of 2026, there was no tax stamp.
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: Um, what does this mean going forward? Like who, who
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: all does it apply to? Is it just Texas now? Like,
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: like who does this have implications for?
- 1:40:09Speaker 9: Yeah, good question.
- 1:40:11Speaker 10: So, you know, basically the, um, the judge and his
- 1:40:15Speaker 10: ruling gave a list of, you know, basically the plaintiffs
- 1:40:18Speaker 10: that had sued the government. And he said, any of
- 1:40:21Speaker 10: those plaintiffs, and there's, you know, a long list of them,
- 1:40:24Speaker 10: and then anyone that is current member or future member.
- 1:40:28Speaker 10: So what we see is, you know, we basically joined
- 1:40:31Speaker 10: one of the other organizations. One of them was like
- 1:40:34Speaker 10: a Texas Rifle Association that was a subsidiary of the NRA. So,
- 1:40:38Speaker 10: you know, we joined that and some of the others.
- 1:40:40Speaker 10: So once you join it, then you as a dealer
- 1:40:44Speaker 10: have the same benefits that basically the ruling created. Where
- 1:40:51Speaker 10: it gets interesting is there's 15 states currently that have
- 1:40:55Speaker 10: state laws that say you have to follow the federal
- 1:40:59Speaker 10: registration process or your silencer is unlawful. So unfortunately, there's
- 1:41:03Speaker 10: 15 states out there that until they correct that language,
- 1:41:07Speaker 10: they're in a position where they still have to go
- 1:41:09Speaker 10: through the old process.
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: Are those states like lefty states or righty states generally?
- 1:41:14Speaker 10: No, I mean, it's sort of a big combination of both.
- 1:41:17Speaker 10: I mean, you know, Montana's on the list, believe it
- 1:41:20Speaker 10: or not.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:41:21Speaker 10: Yeah, Alaska is, Georgia, you know, some of these states
- 1:41:24Speaker 10: that are on there, it basically, it was a way
- 1:41:27Speaker 10: to create a state law that was relying on the
- 1:41:30Speaker 10: federal law. It basically just said, you know, South Dakota
- 1:41:33Speaker 10: had this law and San Francisco Central worked to fix
- 1:41:35Speaker 10: it in 2026. We also helped fix Kansas. So there
- 1:41:38Speaker 10: was two states previously, but In simplest terms, mostly what
- 1:41:41Speaker 10: these states say is that, again, you got to go
- 1:41:43Speaker 10: through the federal process, get your silence or registered through
- 1:41:46Speaker 10: the NFA process for it to be legal in the state. Well,
- 1:41:49Speaker 10: if the NFA process goes away, then it ends up
- 1:41:52Speaker 10: being illegal to own it and possess it in the state.
- 1:41:55Speaker 9: So the state's going to have to change their state laws.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: Oh, I got it.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: But I feel like without getting too speculative here, I
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: feel like if the feds remove the process, and make
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: it that you can't do the process. And a state says,
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: you have to do the process to be legal. I
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: feel like those state courts would pretty quickly get, that
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: ruling would get struck down because you're asking people to
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: do a thing that they can't do.
- 1:42:24Speaker 9: Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:42:26Speaker 10: I mean, that's a good point. Looking at some of
- 1:42:29Speaker 10: these states that, Connecticut's one of them, Colorado's one, Georgia's
- 1:42:35Speaker 10: kind of a purple state, Oregon, Washington state.
- 1:42:38Speaker 9: So there's some states where it could be hard.
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: Harder, harder.
- 1:42:42Speaker 9: They might fight it.
- 1:42:43Speaker 10: They might even create their own state laws that, you know,
- 1:42:46Speaker 10: that's one concern too, is that, you know, we saw
- 1:42:50Speaker 10: where Virginia.
- 1:42:52Speaker 9: Tried to put a $ 500 tax.
- 1:42:54Speaker 10: Earlier this year on silencers when they saw the $ 200
- 1:42:56Speaker 10: tax went away.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: Oh, you're kidding me.
- 1:42:59Speaker 10: No, it didn't last too long, but it was, I mean,
- 1:43:01Speaker 10: it made, it made Virginia our number one state behind
- 1:43:04Speaker 10: Texas really quick just because everyone was worried about that.
- 1:43:06Speaker 10: So If federal law goes away completely as far as
- 1:43:09Speaker 10: the regulation of silencers through the NFA process, it could
- 1:43:12Speaker 10: open the door for blue states to create their own rules.
- 1:43:15Speaker 10: They could create their own tax stamp. They could create
- 1:43:16Speaker 10: their own processes. They could outright outlaw them if they wanted,
- 1:43:21Speaker 10: or they could leave some of these state laws on
- 1:43:23Speaker 10: the books and then make it hard.
- 1:43:26Speaker 9: But we see this process could stay in place for
- 1:43:28Speaker 9: a while.
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: When you look at these states like Virginia that tried
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: to add this $ 500 bill, tax to a suppressor. What,
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: and I'm asking you to put on a, I'm asking
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: you to like put on a funny hat here. Cause
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: I'm asking you like, what, what is the primary argument
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: that they have? Like, what is the primary problem that
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: they have with suppressors?
- 1:43:56Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a fair question.
- 1:43:58Speaker 10: I mean, obviously they see that the Republicans took away
- 1:44:00Speaker 10: the $ 200 tax. So they see it as a way
- 1:44:02Speaker 10: to generate revenue for some other, you.
- 1:44:04Speaker 9: Know, pet project. No, it's a good point. I mean,
- 1:44:08Speaker 9: if you really dig in.
- 1:44:09Speaker 10: And look at the crimes that are committed with silencers,
- 1:44:14Speaker 10: almost 100% of the time, if a crime is committed
- 1:44:17Speaker 10: with a suppressor, they didn't go through the process. They
- 1:44:19Speaker 10: made their own. They didn't go through any kind of
- 1:44:22Speaker 10: background check. So it's not considered a public safety issue.
- 1:44:27Speaker 10: Before Trump got in in 2017, ATF even said, hey,
- 1:44:32Speaker 10: we'd be interested in looking at a way to deregulate these, which,
- 1:44:35Speaker 10: you know, sort of fueled the idea that eventually they
- 1:44:38Speaker 10: could become deregulated because even the ATF felt like they
- 1:44:41Speaker 10: were overregulated, at least at that time.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: You know, I think I've made this point to you.
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: I know I've made it on the show before, but
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I always think, like, imagine that for whatever reason, the
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: laws of physics were such, or the early technologies were such,
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: that guns just were about as loud as they are
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: with a suppressor on them. It's magical thinking, but just
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: imagine that a rifle naturally was about as loud as
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: it is with a suppressor on it now. Would they
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: have made laws saying you had to make your gun louder?
- 1:45:18Speaker 9: Yeah, of course not, right?
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: No, no, I'm just saying, it's like, where is this
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: thinking that they just need to be a certain decibel
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: level so that the people around them need to risk
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: having hearing damage like is it like a way to
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: get you is it like i know how to fix
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: shooters i'll make it that they have hearing damage like
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: i i just like i don't understand the motivation and
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: a lot of the you talk about like blue states
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: a lot of the blue states have a reputation of
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: of sacrificing at times sacrificing personal liberty on the part
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: of public safety saving you from yourself regulating what you
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: buy like You know, you can't buy certain kinds of
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: fishing sinkers because lead could be toxic.
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: But we would like your guns to be really loud.
- 1:46:06Speaker 9: Yeah, it makes no sense.
- 1:46:08Speaker 10: Yeah, it's hard to, you know, I think about the
- 1:46:12Speaker 10: same thing with like, you know, the modern sporting rifles that,
- 1:46:14Speaker 10: you know, they don't necessarily have any data for those and.
- 1:46:18Speaker 9: They still kind of go after those.
- 1:46:19Speaker 10: I do find that some of these states are responding
- 1:46:22Speaker 10: well when I'm doing like testimony at the state level
- 1:46:25Speaker 10: that in Europe, these are completely unregulated. I mean, they
- 1:46:27Speaker 10: have a serial number, but you can buy them over
- 1:46:29Speaker 10: the counter in Europe. It's not considered a firearm. There's
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: no background check. You just walk in and get one,
- 1:46:34Speaker 10: even like in a hardware store or something. So for
- 1:46:37Speaker 10: some reason, the politicians kind of respond to that.
- 1:46:39Speaker 9: They're like, oh, really? Okay, well, maybe it's not as
- 1:46:41Speaker 9: bad as I thought.
- 1:46:41Speaker 10: But still, it's unfortunate that they don't see it as
- 1:46:44Speaker 10: like you're saying, it's just basically hearing protection.
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: The other story I tell all the time, The first
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: time I ever shot a suppressed rifle was 15 years ago. Well, yeah,
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: it was exactly, it was 15 years ago. The first
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: time I shot a suppressed rifle, I was in Scotland.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: We were doing, we were culling red deer on an estate.
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: We were shooting a suppressed rifle.
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: I said, I.
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: Was ignorant to the subject back then. I said, I
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: can't believe you guys can hunt with these. He said,
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: I can't believe you guys cannot hunt with these. And
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: he was telling me, it's impossible for us.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: To get a gun. It's easy for us to get
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: a suppressor.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: I'm like, well, we play the opposite game in America.
- 1:47:29Speaker 7: True.
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: It is like one of those things that's so, to me,
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: the issue is so like, it's so glaringly obvious.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: That these are a.
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: Safe, beneficial tool for people to increase safety, to protect kids.
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: It's just a beneficial tool. It's so glaringly obvious. It's
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: one of those ones where it's hard for me to
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: get in the head of people that oppose them. Usually,
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: I take some pride in being able to articulate opposing
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: viewpoints of mine. I'm kind of stumped. I'm always kind
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: of stumped with these guys. Back to the matter at
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: hand here, though, the details at hand.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: Is it that.
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: Like, right today, is it that in some states you
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: can now I could now go to you and buy
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: a suppressor and just buy it like I'm buying ammo
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: and it just comes to me in the mail or
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: is that not true right.
- 1:48:34Speaker 10: Now yeah good question it's kind of based on state
- 1:48:37Speaker 10: but like so Here in South Dakota, because we changed
- 1:48:42Speaker 10: our law here in South Dakota earlier in the year,
- 1:48:44Speaker 10: people can walk right into Silencer Central, purchase a silencer,
- 1:48:48Speaker 10: but they still do the 4473, like the same background
- 1:48:50Speaker 10: check you would do to.
- 1:48:51Speaker 9: Buy a rifle or handgun.
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: Sure, sure.
- 1:48:53Speaker 9: They do that.
- 1:48:54Speaker 10: We do a background check. If they have a concealed carry,
- 1:48:56Speaker 10: we don't have to do a background check, and then
- 1:48:58Speaker 10: they can leave with it.
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: So then it's just like if you were a gun shop.
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: For me to go to a physical Silencer Central– location
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: yeah i i can get a suppressor in south dakota
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: the same way i can go in and buy a shotgun.
- 1:49:15Speaker 9: Yeah absolutely exactly okay but what.
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: About what about online shopping.
- 1:49:19Speaker 10: Yeah good question so um there's 37 states where if
- 1:49:23Speaker 10: you have a concealed carry there's no background check so
- 1:49:26Speaker 10: we can mail the silencer directly to you there you
- 1:49:28Speaker 10: would just do the 4473 via like docusign and then
- 1:49:32Speaker 10: also um you know, if you have a local dealer
- 1:49:35Speaker 10: that's willing to do a transfer for you, we can
- 1:49:36Speaker 10: sell a silencer to you, ship it to them, and
- 1:49:38Speaker 10: then they can do a local transfer as well.
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: If I, okay, tell me a state that has the state,
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: tell me a state that has the state rule still
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: in place.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Montana. You said Montana. Okay. So this is getting a
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: little nuanced here, a little detailed, but okay. I go
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: to you. I'm a Montana resident.
- 1:49:58Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: And I'm visiting in South Dakota. And I'm like, man,
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: I'm going to go over to Silencer Central and check
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: out everything. And I'm going to buy a suppressor. Is
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: that cool or not cool?
- 1:50:11Speaker 10: So the process would be what we kind of call
- 1:50:13Speaker 10: the old process, the form four. So the same way that,
- 1:50:16Speaker 10: you know, you've done it since 1934.
- 1:50:17Speaker 9: Got it.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: You still have the hold.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: And it would eventually come to my, it would eventually
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: ship to my local FFL.
- 1:50:25Speaker 9: Well, no, it should be right to your house.
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: You should be right in my house.
- 1:50:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: How long would I have to wait for that?
- 1:50:31Speaker 9: Um, right now we see approvals like three or four days.
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: So way different than it was like two years ago
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: for people.
- 1:50:37Speaker 9: That used to be a long time.
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:39Speaker 9: So it's gotten better.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: So the difference train, when I registered my first suppressor,
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: I don't remember. It was quite a long time ago.
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: It went and, uh, I gave a local, I did.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: I remember I was using Bob wards, local Bob wards.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: As an FFL.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: I think it sat there. You probably remember better than me.
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: several years five years ago whatever the hell i think
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: it sat there for 13 months oh wow yeah yeah
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: forever so 200 bucks it sat there i mean for
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: a year i think it was i hit like a
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: terrible time in the backlog sat there for 200 bucks
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: sat there forever finally i was able to go get
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: it we're at least now at a point where even
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: if i'm in one of these states you're talking about
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: i can or i can do mail order like i
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: could go to silencer central buy a suppressor And then,
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: and then in, in several days it's going to ship
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: to me and I'm, and I don't have the 200 bucks.
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:51:34Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: So the tax stamp went away and it's a whole
- 1:51:36Speaker 9: lot quicker.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:37Speaker 9: Um, you know, if you go through a.
- 1:51:38Speaker 10: Trust, it can take a little bit longer just cause
- 1:51:40Speaker 10: they have to reread it, you know, make sure everything's good. But, um, yeah,
- 1:51:43Speaker 10: if you do it as an individual, it's a little
- 1:51:45Speaker 10: bit quicker, but yeah, I would say most people are
- 1:51:47Speaker 10: getting them in a couple of weeks.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: What, what do you think is going to happen?
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: Like, let's just run a scenario where, uh, let's run
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: a scenario where a Democrat, a pro gun control Democrat
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: comes in, in, in, in what the hell is it
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: going to be? 2028, like a pro gun control Democrat
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: comes in, in 2028. Is it like one of those
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: things where you just sign a paper and this whole
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: thing gets reversed?
- 1:52:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:52:15Speaker 9: Good question.
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: Because it's not, because it's not like an act of Congress.
- 1:52:18Speaker 9: Well, good question.
- 1:52:20Speaker 10: So, I mean, that's my concern is that this is
- 1:52:24Speaker 10: tied up in, um, You know, litigation, like you said,
- 1:52:27Speaker 10: you get the worst case scenario would be Democrat and
- 1:52:31Speaker 10: the White House and Democrats run the Senate and the House.
- 1:52:36Speaker 10: So the big, beautiful bill went through just a simple
- 1:52:38Speaker 10: majority vote through Congress.
- 1:52:41Speaker 9: So basically, they could add anything they want to the
- 1:52:45Speaker 9: tax stamp. I mean, the tax stamp before was 200 bucks.
- 1:52:48Speaker 10: I mean, they could pick a number that's inflation adjusted
- 1:52:51Speaker 10: and say it's $ 5, 000 for a tax stamp. And then
- 1:52:55Speaker 10: it would go into effect, you know, whenever they pick
- 1:52:58Speaker 10: and basically the whole market would collapse.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: So they could get punitive. Like they could get like
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: vengeful if they wanted to. Oh yeah.
- 1:53:06Speaker 9: A hundred percent. A hundred percent.
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: It'd be easy too.
- 1:53:07Speaker 9: Cause they'll have to have majority.
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: So if they have, you know, I wouldn't be planting
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: ideas in their head like you're doing right now. Yeah.
- 1:53:13Speaker 10: No other people in the industry have told me about it,
- 1:53:15Speaker 10: which got me scared. Cause it's sort of like, you know,
- 1:53:17Speaker 10: it's sort of a whackable. As soon as you, you know,
- 1:53:20Speaker 10: the best scenario would have been if Congress had done
- 1:53:22Speaker 10: the hearing protection act, then it would have gotten rid
- 1:53:24Speaker 10: of all these state issues.
- 1:53:25Speaker 9: Cause it was written in there.
- 1:53:26Speaker 10: To sort of trump the state issues, which would have
- 1:53:28Speaker 10: been beneficial, but to kind of have it backdoor to
- 1:53:31Speaker 10: the courts. I think no, you know, the other thing
- 1:53:33Speaker 10: we didn't mention is that although the judge came up
- 1:53:35Speaker 10: with this, he gave a seven day sort of stay
- 1:53:38Speaker 10: or pause. He basically said, I'm going to give a
- 1:53:41Speaker 10: seven day pause to give a chance for the federal
- 1:53:43Speaker 10: government to respond. Um, And I tell you, everyone I
- 1:53:47Speaker 10: talk to, I consider experts at this from a legal
- 1:53:49Speaker 10: and also in the industry, 100% of them said there's
- 1:53:51Speaker 10: zero chance the ATF.
- 1:53:53Speaker 9: Doesn't appeal this. And they didn't.
- 1:53:55Speaker 10: So by them not appealing it and not staying in,
- 1:53:57Speaker 10: it just opened the door for that ruling became instant. So,
- 1:54:00Speaker 10: I mean, there's a lot of things came out of
- 1:54:02Speaker 10: the blue. Like, I don't know if anyone would have
- 1:54:04Speaker 10: thought the tax stamp would go to zero. Then I
- 1:54:06Speaker 10: don't think that anyone would have thought the lawsuit would
- 1:54:08Speaker 10: actually win. I mean, you could argue that in Texas,
- 1:54:10Speaker 10: North Texas, yeah, I could see a judge going that way.
- 1:54:13Speaker 10: but then for the Trump administration and DOJ and ATF
- 1:54:18Speaker 10: to not even respond and for it to open the door, um,
- 1:54:21Speaker 10: just cause it creates so much chaos. Cause like I said, it's,
- 1:54:24Speaker 10: you know, some people are protected, some aren't, some States
- 1:54:26Speaker 10: have issues, some don't.
- 1:54:27Speaker 9: I mean, it's a big quagmire.
- 1:54:28Speaker 10: It creates a huge issue for everyone, a huge issue
- 1:54:30Speaker 10: for ATF from a regulatory standpoint, huge issue for us
- 1:54:33Speaker 10: dealers in the industry to try to figure out where
- 1:54:35Speaker 10: the market's going. Um, yeah, it's created a mess. I, I,
- 1:54:39Speaker 10: but yeah, thinking worst case scenario that could happen. Um,
- 1:54:43Speaker 10: you know, I guess the ATF could just completely back
- 1:54:45Speaker 10: away and not challenge it. But then another, um, you know,
- 1:54:49Speaker 10: like I said, another administration could come in and change
- 1:54:51Speaker 10: the tax stamp to, you know, whatever, $ 5, 000 each or
- 1:54:54Speaker 10: whatever they want.
- 1:54:55Speaker 9: And then that's the new norm and the whole market
- 1:54:57Speaker 9: would collapse.
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: It seems like right now, if you're kicking around getting
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: a suppressor, now's the time to strike, man.
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: It's like, it could get better, but it could get worse.
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:55:06Speaker 5: Yeah, no, totally.
- 1:55:07Speaker 9: Especially on the state issues.
- 1:55:08Speaker 10: Those sort of states where, um, You know, it's illegal
- 1:55:11Speaker 10: to state law because eventually the federal law goes away completely.
- 1:55:14Speaker 10: Then they've got an issue that they may not be
- 1:55:15Speaker 10: able to fix on the state level.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you get one now, I'm guessing it's like,
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: you know, they're never going to do something where they
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: come clawing it back.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: But, hey, whatever happened to the Hearing Protection Act? Because
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: I would have pictured if you could get one, like
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: if it had a chance, it would have been over
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: the last two years. Where here you have, you know,
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: Republican administration, Republicans have the House, Republicans have the Senate.
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: If they couldn't get that son of a bitch passed now,
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: why not? After the November elections, prospects for that are
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: going to look a lot dimmer. Ever getting that across
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: the finish line?
- 1:55:57Speaker 9: It's unfortunate.
- 1:55:58Speaker 10: I think just having to get the majority because they
- 1:56:00Speaker 10: would have needed the two-thirds votes or whatever in Congress.
- 1:56:04Speaker 10: They just didn't have enough votes.
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: There's just.
- 1:56:08Speaker 10: Republicans to have a majority in the um senate in
- 1:56:10Speaker 10: the house but it's just not a big enough majority
- 1:56:12Speaker 10: to really pass anything if you look most things aren't
- 1:56:15Speaker 10: really passing yeah the only reason the budget passes because
- 1:56:18Speaker 10: it just needs a simple majority.
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: I understand i understand and also it's like it's there's
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: a there's a probably a priority set right and it's
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: just you know it probably feels like very fringe like
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: yeah to people to people besides guys like.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: You and me it probably feels very fringe.
- 1:56:32Speaker 9: Yeah true Yeah.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: Like what?
- 1:56:34Speaker 10: It's an educational opportunity for us to educate, you know,
- 1:56:37Speaker 10: elected officials.
- 1:56:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: Well, man, thanks for coming on and explaining that. I don't,
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: you know, I, I hear what you're saying though. It's,
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: I hear you on the, on the uncertainty. But I mean,
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: do you, do you agree with the assessment? Like from
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: a professional perspective, do you agree with the assessment that,
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: I don't know, like, is your, is your advice to people, Hey, wait,
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: because it could get better? Or is your advice to
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: people like, I don't know, it could get worse quick?
- 1:57:06Speaker 9: I don't see it getting any better.
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: I mean, yeah.
- 1:57:09Speaker 10: I mean, because right now there's a lot of states that,
- 1:57:11Speaker 10: you know, you could potentially just do a 4473. Like
- 1:57:15Speaker 10: I said, if you have a concealed carry in 37 states,
- 1:57:17Speaker 10: we can mail a silencer right to your front door
- 1:57:19Speaker 10: just doing.
- 1:57:20Speaker 9: A 4473 through the mail. Yeah, I can't see it
- 1:57:23Speaker 9: getting any better.
- 1:57:24Speaker 10: I can only see it getting worse, especially in those
- 1:57:26Speaker 10: states where they've got a state law, they've got to
- 1:57:28Speaker 10: fix that.
- 1:57:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:57:31Speaker 10: And if this stays unresolved, which I think it potentially
- 1:57:34Speaker 10: could through to a Democrat administration, then it's a problem.
- 1:57:37Speaker 10: So when Obama first got in, he changed it where
- 1:57:42Speaker 10: he wanted fingerprints and photos for everyone that was on
- 1:57:44Speaker 10: a trust that bought a silencer. And in the past,
- 1:57:47Speaker 10: that wasn't the case because it used to be considered
- 1:57:49Speaker 10: a corporation and there was no fingerprints or photos for corporations.
- 1:57:52Speaker 10: That drove the greatest demand that I'd ever seen, just
- 1:57:55Speaker 10: that fear of loss. So that That is definitely something
- 1:57:59Speaker 10: that people respond to and afraid that they couldn't get
- 1:58:01Speaker 10: them in the future.
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: So um these dudes watch these dudes watch too many
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: movies where the bad guys got like a pistol that
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: goes they're like oh that that's yeah you know the
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: gun's like you know like yeah that's no good it's
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: like dude it's just not like that you know it's
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: crazy uh so my kids are uh 11 the change
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: is so often i can't remember but like 11 13
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: 16 11 13 16 My kids, yeah, every year. They've
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: never shot a rifle that wasn't suppressed. I'm not joking.
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: My older one has now, but my 11, my 13,
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: they've never shot rifles that weren't suppressed.
- 1:58:42Speaker 9: Perfect.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: They're not scared of them. They are not scared.
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: All the flinching and crying and all that, they are
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: not scared of rifles.
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: They love it. That's awesome.
- 1:58:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: So I do feel like whatever happens, I feel like
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: there's a shift, you know, There's a sort of shift
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: that dope smokers will appreciate this when they start legalizing
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: all that.
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: There's a shift that's just going to be hard to
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: put back.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: It's going to be hard to go down the road
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: as my kids become voting age or whatever and other shooters.
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: It's going to seem like lunacy to them.
- 1:59:20Speaker 9: True.
- 1:59:21Speaker 2: When someone says, oh, no, no, no, no, no. We
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: want your gun to be real loud. It's going to
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: seem crazy to them because they were raised on it.
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: It wasn't like me where they're in their 40s or
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: whatever when they discover this. It's just going to be
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: very second nature to them.
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: That that's what it is. That's how shooting is. That's
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: how rifles are.
- 1:59:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: All right, man. Thanks for coming on and explaining that
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: to us.
- 1:59:45Speaker 9: Thanks for having me, sir.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Take it easy. Absolutely.
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
