Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome back, you guys, to 100% maybe.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: We're gonna jump right into this thing because it is our great honor to have the newest member of the CLC parking team here with us.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Oh that's right.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I only saw three curbs hopped.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Some lady barely escaped getting run over.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Did anybody tell you you're number one out there?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: They did not tell me I was number one, but they all stopped to talk to me.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And so what I said, for all of you that are listening, is if you're gonna stop and talk to me while I'm directing traffic, I'm gonna give you the credit card swiper.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So you gotta pay to play.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Let's hold up traffic.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: There's gotta be something on this.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: This is not your personal meeting with the preacher.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: We gotta get cars in and get them out.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Dude, might be a might be a way to get that new parking lot.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Might be a way to you know, five minutes with the pastor in the parking lot.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: No, because then I'll have to I'll get in big trouble.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: People will say what they want in five minutes, I won't get a chance to respond.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but they gotta pay to do it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So it's fine.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Never mind.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: That's a whole nother train of thought as to just uh nope.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Let's move on then.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: During COVID, we thought about doing that stuff.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: People could drive through and you had you had the sermon in one little slot.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You remember the guys at the baseball games that have the peanuts and stuff?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So you got your sermon here, and then you have your communion elements here, and then so as they pull up, they you know, you give and then you get your sermon, and then you get your communion, and then you drive on.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I and I think there's probably people that that want to go to the beach and they would take their sermon that way.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Not a bad idea.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: It's not.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Just kind of think about it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So before before the invention of all this modern technology we have, I mean, they did they had to print the sermons.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I mean a lot of Spurgeons sermons, it became one of the greatest selling things in England.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Was like the Sunday sermon they would transcribe and print, and people would get it that way.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So now they can just watch it or listen to it.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But what would we do?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Give them a CD?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Or they could just log in and listen to it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Well, I just mean it having a sermon in print isn't the craziest thing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: No, that's that's definitely happened over the years.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Having a pastor in a parking lot might be.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: With the credit card swiper?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, with a credit card swiper.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: But like the the actual parking lot team, they'd run on the other side, they're like, Scott, how many slots do you have on?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And then they got code words for the name of this parking lot spot, like Disney.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I don't know what even the name of this parking lot is.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And so I'd say there's three up here, but the year it has to be like a Geo Metro.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: You're not getting and everybody in our church owns an SUV or a or a truck.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So my my recommendation is we slant all the spots so people can just pull in and drive out.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Could because other everybody feels like they have to back in.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: And I don't and I don't blame them.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: A Geo Metro.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Do they even still make those?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: They should.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're called um uh what are the prisms?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: What do they call them?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: What's that thing, Pam drives?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, a Prius.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: A Prius.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: It's called a it's called a Prius.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: That's the same thing.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they just took the shell of the Geo Metro and dropped it on the Prius and plugged in a golf cart battery.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: That's it, right?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: What a what a random thank you for putting up with us and listening to this.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It feels good to be back.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: So awesome.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Good for you.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Um, well, welcome back to the to the hot seat, man.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Um it was good uh good to see Clint this week, and I know you had some other some traveling and had to work the parking lot, so I know you're excited to do that.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: This week I didn't have to work the parking lot.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: We had a week of a month, weddings, graduations, and then other weddings like close family friends that we were doing weddings for, Delonica, Georgia, and then went up and visited future in-laws in uh Telico Plains, Tennessee, and just been around.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So this week we head down to Orlando for a graduation, but I'll but I'm preaching this weekend.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So we'll be back in time for that.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm excited.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I I am a I like rhythm.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Uh so I am chaos right now.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know whether I'm coming or going.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying to find some sort of normalcy.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Haven't had my normal Wednesday morning Bible study.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're doing this one dry.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: We'll know.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: It's we'll know that they write the sermons on Sunday.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: You do not want those guys, right?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm kidding.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: They're gonna they're gonna be listening.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: They're gonna think it's no good anyway, just because we're like, see, you needed us, preacher.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: You need us, preacher.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, a couple weeks into questions, so we're asking some questions, or we're not.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: We're looking at some questions that Jesus asked.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Um, so this week, we're still in Matthew.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Matthew's getting a lot of run here.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Is he the we're working backwards?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Was he the best note taker of all that that made sure to capture all these questions?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: No, they just these questions seem to fit here better.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: You got Memorial Day, you got Mother's Day, you got some c a couple different holidays in here.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: So we tried to not that we tried to match Memorial Day, but um Mother's Day took a particular question and we just tried to stack them in there the way they fit.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: So what are we looking at this week?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Today we are in the Sermon on the Mount.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Matthew six, but really the Sermon on the Mount is Matthew chapters five through seven, and there's a question he asks in the middle that has to do with anxiety.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So, you know, if you've been at the church for a while, you know that my drug of choice, not not of choice, but I am a I am an anxious, typically an anxious person, and so I've had to spend my entire life moderating and balancing that.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Sometimes good, sometimes bad.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: So whenever we get to this topic of of worry, I have to slow down and think about it and process it and try and put it in the right spot.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And I think we got a good one this week.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it I think I even see it differently than how I taught it.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And I believe we taught this a year and a half ago.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: I don't even think it was that long ago.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: It might have been in the I don't I felt like it was in this.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: It was last fall.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But last fall we only had I never even got on the stage, I don't think.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: We did a or was it?
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: It might have been.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I think it was.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: So maybe that's when you covered it.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: But um but a totally different thought on it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So that's good.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So they're not gonna you guys won't hear the same sermon.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: I don't even remember it, so it's uh it'd be hard to say if I did.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Um okay, cool.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And the qu the question is in uh Matthew 6 27 can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life and multiple translations hit that differently.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: The Greek must have a variance in there that messes it up.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Some some people say add a cubit to your height.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: So life or height.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And a cubit is like 18 inches.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So can you worry about yourself long enough to add 18 inches to your height?
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I don't think it's probably your height.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I think he was probably talking about your life, but yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, your span, span of life or something, a measurement of of some sort.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Uh NLT has a single moment to your life.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Mine says an hour.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: So clearly, same same idea that he's trying to push through.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the translations are one way or the other, it still means the same thing.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: So we're going to start in 19.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: So before we even get into that, yeah, that we have to recognize that the Sermon on the Mount is a wide-ranging sermon that hits most of the topics of life.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Like I think everything in here is is either given direction on or thought on, or so this is Jesus establishing who he is as a as a rabbi.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And this is not been the only time he taught this, uh, but Matthew chose to pull it all together, it seems like.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Now, maybe this is the one time that he taught it all, or did Matthew take a time when he taught and then pull all the teachings together?
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Biblical scholars don't know.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Let's just go with most people like to think that it's exactly what it is, so let's just go with that.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: So all of these topics from five to seven are things that he dealt with in a in a setting where he would teach.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: But imagine if you go into an area that's struggling with a particular piece, he would probably just teach on that.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So you'll hear pieces of this in Luke and other places, but it's a Sermon on the Mount, and we get to this part.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: The reason we pulled in 19 is that at the beginning of verse 25 is the word therefore.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: So it's a transition from his original thought.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So when we get into this section about worry and really our thought on life, he takes the thought that he just made and then he rolls into this thought.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So that's why we backed up and we pulled into 19.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Because you don't want to split that that therefore is connecting two ideas together, two thoughts.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So you don't you don't want to lose the front, the front end because it'll it'll make the second part make sense.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and yeah, that's right.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And and why start at 19 as opposed to verse one, verses one all the way through 16, those are the personal disciplines of prayer and fasting.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And so they kind of fit into this neat bucket of of a transformation and the work that we're doing internally on ourselves.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: So when you get to 19, it's not that it's a vastly different thing, but he does get into possessions and how we view those things as opposed to the work that we put into the kingdom.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: You know, what's going to have the control of your life?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Is it gonna be you trying to take care of your own needs or you taking care of the needs of God and trusting that God is going to meet your needs?
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So the therefore seems to reach back into as far back as nineteen.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Maybe all of it, but it but it doesn't hurt it to pick it up at nineteen.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Um, so he starts out talking about treasures, money, possessions.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Some of those words are maybe meaning the same thing, but obviously he's not just talking about money, just strictly money here, because there's a lot of lot of things that could have our attention um that we value.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So more it maybe it's the things we value, but um that word treasure what um what sticks out to you about about just his uh shaping of this message about what he's wanting us to to think about here.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I think that's the thought he carries all the way into the anxiety.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So so for me, the idea of where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: So he you know he starts off with the storing up on heav in heaven.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: That could be any number of things.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: You know, treasure doesn't have to be actual money.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Child of the 80s, born in 71.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: So in the 80s was the days of um uh what were those things called where you said it was a quarter a month, you got a tape or a cassette or whatever.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm talking about?
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: What are those things called?
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Well, when I was around, it was like the Columbia House, the CD thing.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And and so and I'm way before your time, but I remember the encyclopedia, Britannica.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Where every month you got a new one for I don't even remember what the price was.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: It wasn't expensive, it was like$6.95.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And you get a great deal.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: But they figured out in the 80s that if they added uh presumed value to things, then it was valuable.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And what we find out now, and and I'm I'm only saying this from experience, there's a lot of folks that we have that family members will pass away, and then they inherit these things that you know have extreme value and they have no value.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: But we were convinced that they did.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: So, you know, he starts talking about these things, your treasures.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: A treasure is something that you value.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Doesn't mean that the world values it, it's something that you value.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: So you have to dive into this topic and this idea of what is a is is a value perceived by you?
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Is it the same?
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: How does God value it?
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Like, what is the true value of of our of our focus?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And I'm telling you, we could spend days talking about the things that my generation valued Smurfs, uh, all of the Disney things.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And there's some people out there like, whoa, my Disney stuff is worth a billion dollars.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Well just know that somebody eventually is gonna get that and they've got to do something with it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: I guess it is funny.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Every generation has that, those things, whatever.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Peeny babies.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And every now and then it comes back around and you think, oh, I have stuff like that, or baseball cards, or you know, you name it.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: You're just hoping the things that you were into are gonna be the thing that kept precious moments figurines.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: And and I'm not trying to offend anybody, but but I would make this the pastoral suggestion that before you leave that to a family member to figure out what they're gonna do with it, and and that's a that's a blessing in so many ways, it's also a struggle.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um choose now to put an individual name on one of those things and send it to bless somebody with them.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Instead of blessing somebody with 700 of that particular thing, yeah, give them as a way so that it ties the momentum of who you are to that thing, you know, unless there is a pr of an actual value, then then you can figure it out.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: And there, anyways, you got Golden Silver bars.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: There's some value.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Gold and silver bars, pass them on.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Pass them on.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: That's what your kids want, not the beanie baby.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Stop, stop.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Um perceive value.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So this is about the things that we value.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And so the desire of our heart, um, those things are so connected.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: It's almost like, is it which one follows the other?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Like what you what you focus on, what you put your investment towards, your heart follows, or do you do the things that are in your heart and it fleshes out that way?
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Which way, which way, which comes first?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: It's almost like I mean, they're so connected, it's almost like it could they could go either way.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, both and uh that's a great question.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I I find myself randomly thinking about fly fishing.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Probably more than I should.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Maybe there's I just own that.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I'm not anywhere near a river.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And I'll try I haven't figured out the salt water thing, but you know, where your treasure is, there your heart will be.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: I I probably spend an inordinate amount of money on fly fishing.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: But that's but which same can be true, said for snapper season coming up and got you know, people that do this stuff.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: That's you find out, what do they say, follow the money?
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: So literal treasure, actual treasure, it's where you spend your time, it's where you spend your moments.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Some people invest in family.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: You know, if your treasure is family in those moments, you're going to craft moments.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: You're going to find time to spend with people.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: So I I think you probably could just stop, get a moment of clarity and look around your life.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Whatever came first, whether it was the desire to do it or it's something that you know came about as a result later, not really sure.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: But it is a good check.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Where where are my treasures?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: What are the things that I value?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And then ask the next question.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Is that truly valuable according to according to God?
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: If we're going to talk about scripture, and that's what we're talking about.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Um, is it truly valuable?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Not not is it wrong, because most of the well, I guess there could be some things that you're investing in that maybe aren't great, but is is it is it a is it the best best use of of that?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: And is it out of bounds?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Is it something that goes way too far?
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Should you reallocate?
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Should you figure those things out?
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Is that more than what you wanted?
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: No.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: No.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Always always get more than I wanted.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: I'm excited, man.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: I didn't got through the first three verses and I've used 40 minutes.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: So last question on this section, then we can move on.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: But when he says store store them in heaven, that's obviously we're not literally able to do that, but also we are able to do that.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Is that is that a choice about what it is?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: How how do we do that, I guess, in a in a practical way?
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: It's a great question.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: As you always have great questions, I think theologically you have to sort that through.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Because there are some that will teach this and say, Oh yeah, there's a bank account in heaven.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And and this is where Jim Bell gets mad at me because I make a joke about Jesus dollars.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't mean that in that way.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: But there are some people think that you're that you are piling up treasure in heaven.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: I okay.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I I think more literally, treasures in heaven might mean the eternal awareness of the lives that you're investing in, the work that you're doing in kingdom.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Um what would it look like if we lived now in a way that would allow somebody that's not a believer to see what kingdom life would be like, and then maybe they could reconcile their life, and then you're truly storing up treasure because you're you're inviting more people to be a part of that.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that we don't store up treasures in heaven.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: I just a theology makes me really suspect because I think preachers have used it all wrong over the years.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: But um, I think it's more in in line with doing things that are eternal that don't last.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Because gold in heaven, what does that matter?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: So so so here's your counter to it.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Whatever that treasure in heaven would be is what it's gonna be.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna be probably what we think it is.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: And it could be that we are we are more aware of what is true treasure in heaven, the more that we allow for our treasures to be stored in heaven.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a deeper thought than what I would uh than what I can get into, but I think that's there.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that's a d it's this whole section, this whole part of scripture, you touched on it.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: These are the things, the true things that people worry about, stress about, wonder about, spend their time, assets on everything.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: So I think it's uh it it makes sense that you can spend a lot of time kind of unpacking this in probably the way he's again gonna ask this question because he's taken us somewhere and he doesn't ask the question right away, at least for where where we started, he's gonna start talking about, okay, what do you value?
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I think that's maybe you know part of what this question would be if he's talking about the things that we spend time on, investment on, and that have our heart.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: What do we value?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So then what is the next piece of this?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Because he's talking about your eye.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Light and darkness.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: It's a it's uh how you perceive, how you view.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Once again, I think it's getting back to what we see in this world versus what we see in the natural.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So you kind of have to back into it.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: When you jump forward, he's gonna talk about our view of of kingdom.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: We're worried about things.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: So when you look at a bird, it doesn't seem to worry, does it we look at these things?
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: So if we're gonna talk about our eye, it's the perception, and if your eye is dark, then how dark?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Wait, because he says, uh for uh I'm sorry, um, if if then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: But but the but the switch over that as your eye is preventing light from coming in, so it's causing you to be shaped in a different way.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: So I think that has to do with our perception, our view, how we see life, the lens by which we look at it.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Um Have you seen that there's a lot of speculation that there was a a Jewish saying or an idiom around the eye?
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: I have not heard that.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: There's a it was a saying that they would have had a good eye or your bad eye.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: In a sense, just saying, like, is glass half full kind of guy, or you is everything bad all the time.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: So I think he there's a lot of thought that that he's kind of referring to this, but it's from what I've seen and and read exactly what you say.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Like, it's your focus then.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, if this is your your value, now then what are you focusing on?
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Because if you're gonna see everything in an optimistic, light, um, loving way, that's how you're gonna start to see the world.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And if you if you have this bad eye, this darkness, everything's gonna go wrong, and everything in my life is bad.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: It really robs you of that gratitude that that I think he's calling us to eventually.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: But um definitely I think speaking to what they can connect with with you know the way they think about and we think about the world.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I'll uh it's interesting that he uses the word healthy in reference to the eye.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: So in other words, an unhealthy eye would cause darkness, a healthy eye would allow for light.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Um I I've said this to people, I don't think I've said it at all with you, but I was I was listening to uh um some kind of podcast or something the other day, and the the question that was asked is Is it better to say more positive things in life or less negative things in life?
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: And you think that there's a that's the same thing.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: It's it's wildly different the things that we say versus uh the things that we say positive versus negative, and and statistics according to this this study show that it's more important to say less negative things.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: That the and and and then and then they go on to say where those things show up in our lives that don't that don't feel like negative speaking, whether it's commiserating with somebody about the weather, things that you can't do anything about.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Right, but we'll we'll pick a definitive direction about something that just shapes our mind in a direction that's like, well, then this day just stinks.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: There's nothing I could do about it.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: You know, rather than just knowing you can't do anything about that, so what can you shape?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: And then instead of saying the negative, you so I I wonder if a healthy eye allows you to see things appropriately.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: It's it's tuned in, it's working the way that it's supposed to.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: But the in this spiritual sense, when you lose your eyesight, your spiritual eyesight, then it's darkness.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: You can't discern, you you don't, you know, you don't know where to go, you don't know how to process or move forward.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: That that's the feel that's kind of there.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Very practical.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Super practical, which is important for me when I about the anxiety.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Why this one's different for me than other sermons about anxiety, it's not all about anxiety.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: This is the first time I've read this and I didn't just key in on the anxiety.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: The anxiety is the byproduct of not being able to see well.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: So so instead of, hey, this is a self-help of how to be less anxious, it's it, you gotta go way back.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: You got to take like four steps back and and do something.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Um, we ain't even got there yet.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: But I think to me, the anxiety comes from us trying to be God.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: So it really is taking and placing our need to be in control into the correct hands.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: He's not telling us not to worry about things.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: If something needs to be cared for today, you should go take care of that, right?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Like if if you're Child is in a situation that's not well, you should be concerned about that and you should go do something about it today.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: So go do that.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: But if it's not something you can do till tomorrow, needlessly worrying about that thing is not going unless you can call or make some phone calls or do something different.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: But he kind of, when we get to the end of the text, he sort of puts a bookend on tomorrow and he puts a bookend on yesterday.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: You can worry about the things that are here today, but that zeroes in our focus of where it is.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: But God is the God that's going to navigate and and handle that those other pieces.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: So what happens is anxiety becomes something that is self-inflicted, right?
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Um it's a it's an important emotion for a specific reason until we misuse it and abuse it, and then try to be God.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: And that may not be a helpful answer, but it gets but it's a but that's a I think that's a truth that allows us to then back up and say, well then what is why am I trying to do that?
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Then you can understand maybe why you you're trying to deal with you're trying to deal with things that that are God's to deal with.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: So then you learn to then then the process that stinks is figuring out how to let that stuff go.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: But go ahead.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: No, no, I just a little bit, but I I no, I love I love that thought to it.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Um let's keep going into 24.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Cause now we're talking about our master or what's what we serve.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: No one can serve two masters.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: You will hate one and love the other, you will be devoted to one and despise the other.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: There's a pretty strong stance.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: You cannot serve both God and money or wealth.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Not you sh or mammon, right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mammon or wealth.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's bigger than money.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: It's it's a it's a broader concept of stuff.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Possessions.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Possessions.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Some kind of thing.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: You cannot.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: He doesn't say you shouldn't and say this would be better for you if he says you can't.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Context is very important.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: So it's believed that in the Roman Empire at this time, at least half of the general population was either a servant or a slave.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: So this topic would have made sense when he said, you can't have two masters, because they'd have been like, yeah, that's a problem.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, it doesn't work because you if you did, you'd be working for one and the other'd call you, and then you'd have a problem.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: So I think I think Jesus is speaking to in context to his context.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: And so we hear this and we don't have a problem with hearing this.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: You cannot serve God and wealth.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: I think we can derive the meaning for what it is, but in context, they're all laughing, going, yeah, that wouldn't work out really good.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: They all had most of the people he's talking to probably have a master or they have a job that that would have um would have kind of been parallel to that or similar to that.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And they would have fully understood that you can't have two masters.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: And then what he says is God should be your master, or you can choose mammon or wealth or your possessions.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: You get one or you get the other, but you can't serve both.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: That's and that's right still right in line with how we're viewing things.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Where is God's place in your life?
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: Where is God's place in your life?
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: That's three different examples to set up for this next section of scripture that we're going into.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: If I'm building on what we're talking about and and how he is this teaching is structured, what what is it to you that is so incongruent, I guess, with things that maybe we've already established are not bad necessarily.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Um why why is there such incongruence with like serving God, I guess, or having God like following Jesus, living that life, but also attending to these things, to the possessions.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Why do we miss it?
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Why is it why are those two things so incompatible?
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Well, let's just make some stuff up.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's because they're not incompatible, I think we have combined them.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: So we choose thus we've made our choice, and it's not God.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: That's the answer, and now let me back it up.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: I remember when when I was in school, uh, before Christianity became mainline, in Rome it was illegal to be a Christian.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: And then Constantine didn't make it the state-sponsored religion, he just made it not legal.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, he made it legal.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Well, then immediately it became one of the mainline things.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: So when you now live in an empire that is largely Christian, then everybody around you is Christian.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: And then we go do mission trips.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Does that sound familiar?
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Sounds just like we're in a now, although we we're a cr a post-Christian nation, but for the most part, I think we all assume that everybody around us in the United States of America has a baseline for faith.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: And it may be a little bit of a different flavor, a lot of times different denomination, but there's now now, depending on I'll say Gulf Breeze, our community.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: That's there's other communities that you may be in that you may be watching where um there is uh uh more diversity.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: And so maybe that's not true across all fronts.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: But I I think largely we have blended culture and faith so much to the fact that now we allow culture to determine faith.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: And it's just so so what's the determining factor?
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: What God has to say about something or what culture has had to say about something, and that, my friend, is right in the middle of the conversation that we're having on all fronts.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: And people can be vehemently ticked off depending on the side that you pick.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: But but what he's saying is that God should be the one that determines that.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: So possessions, but possessions can be talking about once again in culture.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: These guys weren't worried about identity, they weren't worried about um 401k, some of them maybe.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: They were worried about food and clothing.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: They worried about surviving.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, Clint's sermon last week, the food.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: That was probably their main thing.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: You and I, it's not are we gonna eat, it's what are we gonna eat.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: It's not are we gonna wear clothes?
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: It's what what brand, what colors match?
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Uh we just received a picture back from some of the stuff that's going on in Zimbabwe.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: And we have a sweet lady there that we that we take care of.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Um, Kiasi Mashava has had leprosy for years and years and years, and we've got her the medical care and we've got her clothes, but she she lives on her own.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: She has tons of clothes, but she still likes the ones that are comfortable to her, which we look at and we're like, oh, that just looks like she doesn't have any clothes that because they're holes in them.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Because she can't walk.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So she carries, she drags herself along.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, so I'm I'm worried she needs more clothes.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: If I gave her more clothes, she's gonna wear those same clothes because she's not worried about, you know, she's worried about food, which we also provide for.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So our minds are not here, right?
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Our minds are here in what we're thinking about.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: So a lot of times our we're more worried about public opinion than we are the other.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Back to the main point that you actually asked about.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I think what happens is there's not a clear delineation for us because we blended the two so much so that God has been left out, and now culture in our opinion, the main point, our opinion is shaping what we believe faith to be.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: So that's us being God, which thus leads to anxiety making decisions that we were never intended to make.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: I'll shut up now.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: That's good, man.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know if that was the answer to your question, but I think that's what leans right into this section.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, you're like, whatever, dude.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: No, it was good.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: No, I love I that that was fantastic.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Um so does that get to our question then of 27?
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I well, so the setup is is 25, the therefore, right?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you'll eat, what you'll drink.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Um, and then he gets then here's the statement.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And this could have been the question we asked.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Is not life more than?
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Now, to change the context, the he he says to them food um and about the body or clothing, but we could just ask the question, is not life more than?
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: More than fill in the blank?
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: More than the things, the stuff.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Like if we just hung that question out there, that to me is the heart of this thing.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Because the because the question that we ask is, and can any of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your lifespan?
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And then we could ask the question, well, is adding an hour to your life, is that truly life?
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Is that what you're shooting for?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Like, is it just trying to hold on to every last little the things that you can't control, the things you're not designed to control?
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: That that may be the clearly a more clearly defined delineation that Jesus makes because he draws a distinction that is to them clearly God's lane.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Can you add one more moment to your life?
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And they would have all said, Yeah, that's not my call to make.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: But you're gonna worry about everything else.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: But God is really the one that determines this.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: So I think theologically, in their world, they were the ones that believe that God was the one that gave them breath, gave them life.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: That's a Jewish audience that he's speaking to.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: So, um, what was your question?
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, good.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Uh so so that you're asking, getting down to the question.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Can can can you by by worrying, it's a it's a it's almost a rhetorical question.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: You you know you can't.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: You know you can't.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Uh he then talks about the animals and he talks about the flowers.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is there anything with just specific to creation you think about it?
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you, this is what ate my lunch the whole time.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Uh and this may be the sermon, and you probably get in the whole thing.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Um, although I I might just play this podcast on Sunday.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Because I've been able to get them all.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: I gotta go back and listen to it and write all these notes down.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Because I'm making it up.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: But he uses the grass and he uses the birds.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: And if if I was to say, tell me what's different between us and them, or that you could come up with all sorts of answers, but I think the the main distinction is you have creation and then you have humanity, which scripture refers to humanity as being the crowning jewel of creation.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: God created us differently.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Now I I know there are people that they look at their dogs and they're sure they have a soul and maybe they do.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: I've got a dog that I think made it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying he he believed in Jesus.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: But the hopefully the difference for us is life more than you know, animals, their main concern is survival.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Now they'll store up.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: People say, I've never seen an animal worry.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: I've seen an animal worry.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: If you're a deer hunter and you sit in the woods, they're worried about everything.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: They're always worried.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: So it's not true to not say they're not that way, but their main function is survival.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: They're not thinking about transforming the world around them.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, deer don't typically think that way, birds don't think that way.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: They may be natural because of the things they do.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: It maybe changes the environment around them, you know, as a res response.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Um, same thing with with plants, they grow, they have a function of what they do.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is saying you as a human being need to recognize that life is more than survival.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: So if you realize that, and then you so then you're then you're left with, okay, so what is this thing that makes life different that we now have responsibility for?
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: And then Jesus says, and so you can now choose, do you want to be the Lord of that domain, or do you want to find out what God has to say about that domain?
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And so it's what I'm gonna wear, what I'm gonna draw, how am I gonna bring order into my chaos?
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna do it based on I'm the fact that I'm God?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Or do what does God have to say about this?
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: I love Clint's sermon this last week because the disciples had to take their loaves and fish, give it to Jesus, knowing that he's about to feed people that they hate.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Now, Clint was very soft on this, but this is a culture they didn't like.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: They would have been the ones that Joshua pushed out of the promised land.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: So they'd have been like, I got seven loaves and a few fish.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Jesus says, give them to me.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: So they gave him their supply.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Jesus took it, blessed it, broke it, gave it back to the disciples for them to then turn and go do it.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: You do it.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: So we're missing that step in our lives when we we needlessly worry about things that God wants to order.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: So when we choose to be God in our own lives, then um, then this anxiety we're carrying was never meant for us to carry.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: God has a purpose, God has a plan, He's orchestrating, He's working it all out.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: The moment that we try to feel away about things that we can't control, it's not ours to carry.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: We're not designed to do that.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Doesn't make it easy to figure out how to get rid of it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: I I by nature fall right into that world, and man, I I have contingency plans for contingency plans.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Period.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So it's a it's a battle of daily processing and working that out.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: What is the antidote or flip side to anxiety?
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: What is it for you?
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Is it for me or what does scripture say?
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: What does scripture say?
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Scripture says in verse 33, but strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: That is not that's not human math.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: It's hard to look at somebody who's in financial ruin and say, What you need to do is go to church.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: And that's not what that verse says.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: But you need to strive first for the kingdom and all these things are gonna be added unto you.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: You still have to work, you still have to provide for your family.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: So it's not it's not super clean, but the concept is there that if your heart is towards kingdom things, then you're gonna value kingdom things.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: We've seen, I mean, this statement doesn't make sense to the disciples.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Because if they they all died horrible deaths, minus John.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: They all die he but it was forget it.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: His was not a great death either.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Um so you you can't s he didn't spend his life trying to find his next meal, he spent his life trying to develop the kingdom and pay dearly in many regards for it.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: So this this striving first for the kingdom doesn't and and and to hear and all these things will be given to you as well, that's not to say that ends are always gonna meet or things are always gonna work out the way that you're supposed to.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: But I think in Latin of Kingdom, the the greater story, the greater intent, all of that's there.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: So I it's dangerous when I put that out there.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: I think I feel like I have to say this is what scripture says.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Now figure out how to live into it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: I'm I am.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: I'm figuring out how to live into it, not perfectly.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Um the next verse, then, because I think this is the counterbalance to it.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: That means you should probably worry about today.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: You should probably go take care of what you need to take care of today.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: So, so striving for kingdom doesn't mean that you you shouldn't be concerned about things.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: But the needless worry.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Needs worry.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Because he definitely says don't worry.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: But then he says no, that that doesn't mean don't do anything.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Today has enough trouble for itself.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: In other words, but don't worry.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't worry, but do worry.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have plenty of worry, but but be responsible for what you have to be responsible for, right?
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Because semantics.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Look at the birds, they're working, you know, they're not sitting around.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Worry can be worry in the moment could be uh could be divided up into some different emotions.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: If a car is coming at you, you can worry about that car, or maybe you should have enough fear to get out of the road.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: So it can be redefined as a shorter, a shorter word that makes more sense in that moment.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: Worrying about it is an extended time frame of that.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: So I think if we're worrying about something, we need to get back to what's causing the worry, determine whether we can do something about it and then do it, or place it in the hands of God who can do something about it.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and Paul in Philippians talks about anxiety, which these words are kind of interchangeable in scripture, worry and anxiety.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, his his antidote there is pray, pray about it.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, and I I think that's the thing that changes us.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: It's it's hard, it's really hard, but it it's it's hard to be praying and being grateful for something and still remain in that in that same headspace in that moment.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: True.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: And we know that that's a continually ongoing thing.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: It doesn't we don't just do it one time and then that's it.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: You know, so it's it's a daily, daily thing, moment by moment.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: And I and I this is the the great blessing that I have of being a lead pastor and this church being so generous to give me the time to go on sabbatical and to reprocess some of that.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: I was consumed with worry and fret and turmoil and the overworking and all this stuff because I thought I had to be the all things to all people in all situations.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm more healthy today than I ever have been.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: I but I could at least say that I'm more present to the things that I need to be because I stopped doing a lot of stuff that I didn't need to do.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: A lot of it didn't need to be done.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: It just fell to the ground.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Now, there might be some people ticked off about some of those things, but it just wasn't things that needed to be done.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: And then I was able to get back all of that capacity and then reassess and then kind of put my energies in a direction that of things I could control and then do the work of not, you know, that nagging voice of, you know, everybody, you want everybody to be your friend.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: You know, you want, you, you want to this group that you always used to meet with, you're not meeting with them as much anymore, and they're gonna be frustrated about that, or, you know, those different things.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And then you realize there's gonna be some things that aren't gonna be always perfect, and you gotta kind of navigate what's that greater purpose of kingdom that I think we're all called to?
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: I gotta say this, and I know we're probably out of time.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Um, one of the topics that came up in worship planning this morning was this idea of complacency.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: This message cannot all be about anxiety because there are people in this world that have reached a point to where financially they're okay, uh, they've got things worked out, family's good, things are there.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: And so the other side of anxiety might be complacency.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: So this is really a two-sided message.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: You can be complacent and miss the greater purpose.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, once you get to a place to where you have established in those sense, you you, you know, you you need to be asking the question, what is it that I'm seeing?
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: What am I aware of?
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: All of these things that can be added unto me, what is the true kingdom value?
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: Or did you, did you just establish all of this value in your life that allows you to be complacent that's truly not valuable?
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: So then you have to ask that question and then get back to kingdom view.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Maybe even a little easier or harder.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know, because where is your God?
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: And then I'm that's I'm not throwing shade, or or maybe I am, I'm causing you to think, how can I take these things and use them for kingdom, the true value, storing up treasure in heaven?
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Not the treasure we think, but the treasure that's true treasure.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: How do we bring all that to bear?
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be the opposite message of anxiety.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: So if you're listening to this and you're like, I'm I'm not anxious, be like, maybe you should be about, you know, where you sit.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: If you're complacent, I mean, come on, you gotta you gotta get back in the game.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: God has called us to die with our boots on, and and I think that's important for us to do.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I I don't know if that if that's theologically correct, but I know I'm gonna die with my boots on, and and just be to try always be trying to make a difference in this world.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: My boots may look a little different, they may turn into flip-flops at some point, but sorry, guys.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: That's well, you had the shorts on last time we did this.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: I did, and those legs terrified a bunch of little children, and it was rough.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Well, no, it's good.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: I it's a message that definitely calls for reflection.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: And I don't think Jesus bags on people about their anxiety, but he he definitely invites reflection on hey, what what is it you're valuing and the worry that you have?
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Like, what is it you're really worrying about?
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: I think you spoke to a lot of those things very very practically and very truly.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: So awesome, man.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Looking forward to having you back Sunday.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: You're gonna run straight from the parking lot up to stage.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: I'm not working the parking lot this week.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: All right, well, no credit cards placed for you then out there in the parking lot.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, awesome, man.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be great.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Hope to see you guys this Sunday.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gonna be a great week, beautiful week.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Snapper season opens up in like a couple days or whatever.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So it's game on.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, see you guys in.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: See ya, love ya.
