- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:30Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32tenth annual health IT digital health and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Luis Tavares, who
- 0:38is the senior vice president and chief information
- 0:40officer at Jefferson Health. Thanks for being here,
- 0:43and I'll have you start off by sharing
- 0:45a little bit more about yourself and your
- 0:46work in health care. Well, first of all,
- 0:48thanks for having me here.
- 0:49I do serve as the chief information office
- 0:52for Jefferson Health, but really for the entire
- 0:54Jefferson enterprise. So we have the health side
- 0:57of it. We have the university side, and
- 1:00we also have a health plan. So it's
- 1:02a three components to the to the organization.
- 1:05As the CIO, I oversee all those different
- 1:08areas,
- 1:09for health. And Jefferson Health with 32
- 1:12different hospital systems,
- 1:14different hospitals in the Philadelphia area,
- 1:17Lehigh Valley and South Jersey,
- 1:19about 700 plus KA locations,
- 1:22and we are the largest in the in
- 1:25the region.
- 1:26Wonderful.
- 1:27Well, thank you for being here, and let's
- 1:29start our conversation talking about AI.
- 1:32Nearly half of medical practices reported using AI
- 1:35in some capacity last year, and it remains
- 1:37a key topic for health IT leaders. So
- 1:39from your perspective,
- 1:41what are the use cases that are making
- 1:42a difference right now, and how are you
- 1:43leveraging them in your organization?
- 1:46So the the one that is the unquestionable
- 1:48king of making a difference is Ambient AI.
- 1:52We've been deploying that for the last few
- 1:54months, and it has been tremendous, tremendous reception
- 1:58from all the clinicians out there that are
- 1:59using it.
- 2:00They've expressed to me it's a game changer
- 2:03for them.
- 2:04So that's how significant it is. We need
- 2:06to continue to deploy it and look not
- 2:08only at the practices,
- 2:10but look at the ER. We're looking at
- 2:12nursing, looking at all different areas that we
- 2:14can deploy the same technology
- 2:16because it is so impactful.
- 2:18Absolutely.
- 2:19And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 2:22tools to remote monitoring, broader digital health platforms,
- 2:26introducing new technology does bring challenges. So what
- 2:29advice do you have for leaders navigating everything
- 2:31from governance to patient engagement? And can you
- 2:33share an example of how your organization has
- 2:35balanced innovation with the operational constraints?
- 2:39So
- 2:40from the remote patient monitoring and and digital
- 2:43health,
- 2:45one advice that I would have is be
- 2:47careful not to have too many solutions.
- 2:50There's so many different vendors out there trying
- 2:52to sell us something
- 2:54because they believe we have a problem, not
- 2:56because we really think we have a problem.
- 2:58So focus on the areas that you need
- 3:00your help. Focus on identifying what the needs
- 3:03are and find the best solution that you
- 3:05can find. And look at your platforms, your
- 3:07current platforms.
- 3:09I don't wanna proliferate
- 3:10hundreds and hundreds of different applications out there
- 3:13because it it really, really makes it much
- 3:15more cumbersome from an operational perspective.
- 3:18Absolutely.
- 3:19And shifting gears slightly,
- 3:21how are you seeing recent legislation, both state
- 3:23and federal, affect health care organizations
- 3:25and health IT specifically, and have you adjusted
- 3:28any strategies in response?
- 3:30Really, not not really. I haven't really seen
- 3:32that much legislation that's impact on what we
- 3:34do and how we do it. So it
- 3:36hasn't had a strategy,
- 3:37impact at all. I'm sure there's gonna be
- 3:40new things, especially with AI, the regulations around
- 3:42AI. It'd be interesting to see what we
- 3:44come up with that. That may have an
- 3:46impact, but I really have not seen any
- 3:48regulatory or,
- 3:49local legislations that have impact to what we're
- 3:52doing or how we're doing it.
- 3:54And wrapping up our conversation,
- 3:56what is your top piece of advice for
- 3:58health care leaders as they prepare for further
- 4:00advancements in technology and rising demands for care?
- 4:04So when you when you think of health
- 4:06care leaders and
- 4:07think about the CIO, the role of CIO,
- 4:10I'm just one of the general managers that
- 4:12runs the organization.
- 4:14And my focus is IT,
- 4:17but I have to really, really focus on
- 4:18the strategy of the entire organization.
- 4:20We have to stay focused on that and
- 4:23really think about what is the value that
- 4:25we bring to the organization with everything that
- 4:27we do. It has to be a value
- 4:29driven
- 4:30leadership style that you have to have going
- 4:32forward because that's what we're looking at value
- 4:35from a patient perspective,
- 4:36from an organizational perspective, from a community perspective.
- 4:39That's what we have to focus on the
- 4:41value.
- 4:42Well, Luis, thank you so much for joining
- 4:44me today on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast and
- 4:46sharing these insights. Again, we are recording live
- 4:48at the tenth annual health IT, digital health,
- 4:51and RCM meeting. Thank you for
- 4:57having me.
