- 4:59Speaker 1: But I'm going to say, let's see I can check my own sound.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Let's see, i'll turn this up, check my own sound.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It's working.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So I I guess the green light at one point shuts off on its own, but it's working.

- 6:32Speaker 1: So if you want to chime in, let me know.
- 6:36Speaker 1: But tonight we're going to be talking about the Whiskey Thief and the, the one of the tools of the industry, and how it's used, and you get to see mine too.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I know that on the audio podcast you'll just have to hear about it and we'll go into a little bit of detail.

- 7:08Speaker 1: We really love this, this glass, and it's kind of cool, and then you're part of our group.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So it's growing pretty good and pretty fast between Facebook starting to get going on YouTube.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I still want to get the podcast going a little bit harder and heavier.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm going to take it a little bit of a break as far as pushing it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I got some podcasts lined up but it's been ups and downs with YouTube.
- 7:36Speaker 1: But YouTube the shorts are really doing good and the reels are doing good.
- 7:41Speaker 1: On Facebook, but also the lives are doing good.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Love to do this And you know, like the throw something like this.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's a Thursday night.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I'm right on cue for doing the podcast.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's just me tonight.

- 8:19Speaker 1: So and that I mean that tonight, while you're watching, tonight, we're going to be checking out the whiskey thief.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So this particular tool that I have with me and I'll try and describe it the best I can on the audio, but for you at Facebook Live, i am taking it out of its case.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Now this, it's been a year.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It comes in this really nice velvet case.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna basically it's been used enough where I'm starting to try and get it so that I can, when I open it wow, a spider just ran across, watch that sucker move.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Anyways, i'm getting it out, got through the handle.
- 9:02Speaker 1: There we go.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Oh, i gotta see what's going on with that.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It's like a little knot kind of thing building up right there, but I think I can pull it through the other way.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Anyways, it's this beautiful velvet case says Vendome on it and in it is that I'm going to be doing a cleaning on it.
- 9:20Speaker 1: But I've kept it pretty nice and neat so far.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But this copper, it's a copper thief.
- 9:26Speaker 1: The reason why it's copper is copper has, uh, uh antibiotic.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It has tendencies where germs and bacteria and viruses don't grow.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So the other thing that copper is is, once again, it's a metal that doesn't really affect the change of the whiskey.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So this long tube goes into the whiskey barrel, similar to what I'm doing here.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You drop it in and you let it sit, you move it around a little bit and you bring that sucker.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Uh, you put it's got like a straw.
- 10:12Speaker 1: It's a straw and it's got a hole right at the top, so once you let it sit, you cover the hole and it works just like if you've got straw and you're drinking.
- 10:21Speaker 1: You're trying to transfer some water someplace with the straw and then you're able to fill up your glass.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Uh, this allows you to to uh detect or take whiskey right out of a barrel.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Uh, it fits easily into a bunghole.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It's got this beautiful copper handle right here.
- 10:42Speaker 1: This particular uh unit, uh, i was able to purchase.
- 10:48Speaker 1: My wife purchased it for me at Vendome, which makes the copper stills, and they purchased this thing.
- 10:56Speaker 1: She purchased it and then gave it to me for my birthday because she was able to get us tour of the facility.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Uh, you can actually check that out on the scotchy bourbon boys youtube where we went through and then also, when I was presented, presented the whiskey thief.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Now you say, what does somebody need this for?
- 11:20Speaker 1: well, one of the really cool things.
- 11:23Speaker 1: If you do a barrel pack and you bring this along, they're gonna most likely let you put this in the barrel and use your own thief to thief.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Um, this is a very nice thief.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I will give you the quick rundown.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I actually have it up there.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It is a 390 on the website.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Um, let me read.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Go back in time to old Kentucky with this vintage piece of distilling history.
- 11:50Speaker 1: A copper whiskey thief is the exact tool used by master distilleries master distillers across the globe for centuries, and its name implies it sneaks in and steals a sample straight from the barrel then releases it into a cup.
- 12:53Speaker 1: The most pleasant way to test any batch is the old-fashioned way.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Taste it yourself.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Um, they basically says uh, they're one in a quarter inch diameter by 28 inches long.
- 13:04Speaker 1: That's with this, with the brass cap and tip right at the bottom and a copper handle, uncoated and all-natural for pure, unadulterated quality.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Patina or tarnish can be easily polished to restore shiny finish using inexpensive copper cream.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Old-school distillers and enthusiasts actually prefer the patina.
- 13:26Speaker 1: An authentic part of whiskey culture, elegant state of the art, a true classic ideal for use or display, great gift idea, and I would have to agree with that.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm going to just set this out here on its on its uh velvet case, which is just beautiful, in case I need it again.
- 13:48Speaker 1: So, uh, i looked into the history.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So in other parts of the world there was what they call it's called, uh, a valinch.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So same exact tube, but it's uh, uh french.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Uh comes from uh avallure, which is french for swallow.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So basically that's what the valinch is, the same as a copper or whiskey thief.
- 14:18Speaker 1: They're both copper and then uh, they're.
- 14:21Speaker 1: The great thing about it is um, especially for us.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I've actually uh, when I bring that along, a lot of times they'll let you know if it's a distillery and they have the rick houses, you can, in an experience or whatever, or if you're dealing with people, you're able to thief from a barrel and taste that whiskey right out of a barrel.
- 14:42Speaker 1: It's a fantastic tool to have.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I really would say that uh, it has enhanced my whiskey uh experience uh so far and it's been an absolute uh.
- 14:56Speaker 1: What would you say?
- 14:58Speaker 1: uh, it adds excitement to going to whiskey distilleries and different distilleries around the country.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I mean we, i was able to thief uh brandy barrel at uh, the spirit of french lake, which I actually have a bottle of that brandy now.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Uh, it was um, and then also great lakes, great lakes distillery in wisconsin.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I was able to stop in and was able to thief.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I have six year cherry brandy finished uh, in a bourbon barrel.
- 15:33Speaker 1: So there's a lot of things that that allows you to do and afford, so really kind of cool.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It's been in a barrel.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Uh, let's see a for the scotchy bourbon boys first ever barrel pick.
- 15:45Speaker 1: It was in on the knot.
- 15:46Speaker 1: We used it for the knob creek barrel pick, which was fantastic.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And then also, uh, what else?
- 15:54Speaker 1: where else?
- 15:54Speaker 1: um, i'm trying to think what.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Uh, oh well, when we went to whiskey thief distillery, it's been in those.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's been in, used in those barrels.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Uh, that's on reels.
- 16:05Speaker 1: So a lot of different kind of things.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So then, the like I said, it's called the valinch elsewhere.
- 16:12Speaker 1: So, but, searching and researching this, there's another aspect.
- 16:17Speaker 1: They're smaller versions and a lot of times you'll see, you'll see, I'm gonna check real quick to make sure Facebook is scout.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's doing it.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I still got sound and a lot of times you'll see in like out, when I'm around Allen Bishop, he's got a little copper tube that's in his breast pocket and I had no idea really what that was.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I didn't put two and two together until I was searching and they're called dipping dogs or they.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Another name for it is a copper dog.
- 16:58Speaker 1: It's a smaller version of this and you can get them and they can be stainless steel or they can be copper and what they are are small versions of them and you base and it's on a chain so you can drop that, that in and get it and it gets you like a three ounce pour from the barrel.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So a lot of the master distillers.
- 17:21Speaker 1: But but little did I know the dipping dog.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Copper dipping dogs originated in the 1800s in Scotland.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Distillery workers crafted dipping dogs to lower into casks to steal the whiskey.
- 17:38Speaker 1: The dipping dogs were attached to change, secured to the workers belt and concealed in their pants leg.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So what they were doing is I read all about this is that would be a way for the workers at lunchtime a lot of time like they would be able to retrieve samples of the whiskey that they were working on.
- 18:01Speaker 1: So a lot of times you'd think Rick House workers like the barrel hands that were moving the barrels and bringing the barrels in for dumping.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It allowed them to be able to get samples of the whiskey that they were working with.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Now the other one that was a copper dipping dog and then the other copper dog, let's see thumbs up.
- 18:24Speaker 1: The reason why they call it a dog is because, just like the dog, it was a man's best friend.
- 18:31Speaker 1: It was right by your side.
- 18:34Speaker 1: That's why they called it a dog.
- 18:36Speaker 1: So one of the cool things I was reading about is that it was also a rite of passage of some of the workers.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Someone wrote that they were working in a distillery with their father.
- 18:47Speaker 1: They worked there for about a year and had no idea about a copper dog or how the whole system worked the tube down, your pants, legs and everything.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And so one day at lunch his dad took him out back and there was a group of guys and they basically gave him his copper dog and his dipping dog and he had he's like well, what's that for?
- 19:12Speaker 1: and they're like looking at him like you're part of the crew, now you've been here long enough, you've earned your right to be able to do this.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Now it was amongst the workers, but not everybody was trusted to be able to do this.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So they so they basically had a old boy network or a cult or kind of like what it within the distillery of only the certain amount of people that they trusted to do it.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Because imagine if someone would tell on them that they were doing it or they had this, they probably would be fired.
- 19:46Speaker 1: That would be my guess.
- 19:48Speaker 1: So it was something that not everybody did, but it was there to be done.
- 19:54Speaker 1: So it's really kind of a cool story that I had no idea till I was reading about it at lunch.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So you know, you've got the, the Vlynch, you got the whiskey thief, you got the copper dog, the dipping dog, you've got the whole system set up within their clothing, down to their pant leg, to be able to get the whiskey.
- 20:14Speaker 1: If you worked, obviously, and you did this, you probably weren't buying.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You didn't have to buy too much whiskey.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Between I would imagine that the distillery was giving out bottles from time to time, because most places when you work there is some advantages, even now today.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So I don't think today you have to do much stealing of the whiskey if you're there.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm sure most places I've seen you don't have to steal.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Now, this is a bottle I just opened.
- 20:48Speaker 1: It's signed by the distiller right here and he like let's just get through.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Kelly Toneal is distilling there and Hunter coffee is the main distiller there and then also Walter Rausch is the.
- 21:13Speaker 1: That's it.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Let's just see hunter.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yep, it's like thanks, hunter.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So what you do at whiskey thief and the really cool thing about whiskey thief is every bottle.
- 21:28Speaker 1: You basically label it yourself.
- 21:31Speaker 1: They tell you what the batch is, this, the age, the you know, and then also you.
- 21:40Speaker 1: They've got different people to help you out And what it is is a barrel pick.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Whiskey.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Think distillery is a barrel pick that when you walk in they've got a tour set up.
- 21:56Speaker 1: You pay for the tour and then they allow you to taste on the tour from five different barrels that they have out And they change out as they unfill.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Your host will thief those barrels into tasting glasses and you get to.
- 22:14Speaker 1: You get to with your tasting glass, taste whiskey from the five different barrels.
- 22:22Speaker 1: It's thiefed by the host and poured into your glass.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And if you like one, you can either get a 375 milliliter bottle, a 750 milliliter bottle and you fill that bottle with your own thief.
- 22:39Speaker 1: So if you like a bottle, you fill it up with the thief.
- 22:42Speaker 1: They put a label on it and then you purchase.
- 22:45Speaker 1: It's available for purchase extra.
- 22:47Speaker 1: But it's the coolest experience ever because if you have your own whiskey thief, you can thief from the barrels.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Walter's there, the owner A lot of times we've been there, he's just there.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Hunter's there, kelly's there.
- 23:04Speaker 1: We also cannot forget Hannah.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Hannah is one of the tour people and then also she is a really good friend of the podcast.
- 23:19Speaker 1: She is amazing.
- 23:22Speaker 1: She does the thiefing, knows all about the bourbon and makes sure the whole experience fantastic.
- 23:28Speaker 1: You know, between talking with Hunter and Kelly and Walter and then having Hannah, it's just a great experience.
- 23:34Speaker 1: They encourage you to hang out.
- 23:36Speaker 1: They got food trucks but at the same time you're using your whiskey thief or their whiskey thief and you get the thief right from the barrel.
- 23:44Speaker 1: That's an experience that isn't what would you say.
- 23:49Speaker 1: There's something like it at.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'm going to have a little bit of this.
- 23:54Speaker 1: This is probably about a year and a half old because this came off the first time I was down there and Hunter signed it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I initially met Hunter through Alan Bishop, through the Alan Bishop experience that Bill Cumberland shot, and Hunter is just a great guy.
- 24:17Speaker 1: You sit down with Hunter and he will talk whiskey.
- 24:21Speaker 1: He'll talk anything.
- 24:22Speaker 1: He just makes some delicious Vendome pot-stilled whiskey.
- 24:28Speaker 1: So I'm going to give this a little sip.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Everything there, right from the barrel, unfiltered, no filtering and just barrel proof.
- 24:44Speaker 1: So I think this one let me see what proof it was 112 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It's just, it's fantastic, And so there's that delicious.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So, getting back to, we're going to wrap this up pretty quick, guys, let's see.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Hey, andy, it's good to see you, it's good to see you.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Supernash, you're doing some paperwork and invoicing and watching the podcast, but one of the cool things I mean, that's all I'm going to say It's one of the tools of necessity The barrels.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Now the other aspect of why it's called a thief And everybody we were just talking about the workers.
- 25:42Speaker 1: They're thieving.
- 25:43Speaker 1: But whiskey coming out of a barrel when it's getting, they watch volume.
- 25:53Speaker 1: The government has always watched volume.
- 25:55Speaker 1: They used to have government agents right outside the warehouses.
- 26:00Speaker 1: But the whiskey has to be tasted.
- 26:04Speaker 1: It has to be sampled out, tasted, blended.
- 26:08Speaker 1: There's a certain amount.
- 26:09Speaker 1: All that whiskey is not taxed by the government, so that doesn't go through the taxing.
- 26:19Speaker 1: So when you're taking a taste out, not only are you taking it out of the barrel, so you're thieving it from the barrel, you're stealing it from the barrel.
- 26:29Speaker 1: So the barrel had a certain amount of it's 53 gallons probably has 40 gallons in it And you just tasted it and you tasted it with a two ounce.
- 26:40Speaker 1: So now it's two ounces short.
- 26:42Speaker 1: So let's say as a, let's say as.
- 26:49Speaker 1: What would you say, as what's coming out and it's not being taxed and it's being stolen from the barrel.
- 27:02Speaker 1: So there's less in the barrel but they don't have to pay taxes on it.
- 27:07Speaker 1: So when you're at whiskey thief, one of the things you got to do is you fill up your bottle.
- 27:11Speaker 1: You taste it a bunch, but you fill up your bottle and then you pay taxes on that.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You have your labels and everything and you're paying taxes on that, whereas if you're thiefing and sampling and doing things, that's why it's called a thief, because everything that's being taken out through that isn't being taxed.
- 27:29Speaker 1: It's being consumed for tasting purposes, to see if you like it, to see if it needs to age longer.
- 27:34Speaker 1: That is got a kind of a what would you say?
- 27:38Speaker 1: It's a vacation from taxes.
- 27:44Speaker 1: So that is why it's called a whiskey thief, because of the fact that not only are you taking from the barrel but also you're thieving technically from the government.
- 27:56Speaker 1: So those are the two reasons why you call it a whiskey thief.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Once again, we got into the copper dog, the dipping dog, which is a smaller version of these that are that basically are used for getting the whiskey outside of the distillery through the tube that they drop in, they siphon it off into containers, in their boots, the whole system works out and they walk out and they've got.
- 28:24Speaker 1: They've actually committed theft of a small amount of whiskey three, six ounces, but you know that adds up.
- 28:32Speaker 1: But so that's why we're talking about the thieving part, the stealing.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Some people usually, when I put it up there, i'm using a whiskey thief, the thief, the barrel they're like what are you talking about?
- 28:43Speaker 1: How are you stealing?
- 28:44Speaker 1: Well, i just explained exactly what it is.
- 28:48Speaker 1: It's not so much stealing from the.
- 28:51Speaker 1: If you're a worker, you're stealing right from the distillery you work for, plus you're, and in most cases I think that aspect is all worked out already today, but back then in the 1800s, early 1900s it was, you know, they were actually taking from their employee and then also, whatever they took from their employer, the employer wasn't paying tax on.
- 29:15Speaker 1: They put they pay tax in the bottom.
- 29:17Speaker 1: So you're also stealing from the government.
- 29:20Speaker 1: So that's where the thief and the thieving come in.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I just think it's a really kind of a cool thing, you know, getting that whiskey into your, into your glass and participating on the distillery level.
- 29:34Speaker 1: It's just an amazing experience.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Now the other place I will say, is bourbon 30, which is in right in the Lexington, lexington area.
- 29:43Speaker 1: They allow you to thief from their barrels, come up and blend and come up with your own blend.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And then they thief enough to make the blend and in your bottle.
- 29:56Speaker 1: So that's really kind of cool.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Same exact scenario where you can go and thief whiskey barrels I mean when you're you got like 12 barrels to taste from to come up with your own blend So you taste through the barrels, find out the ones to figure out what you want, and then you put them together in a ratio.
- 30:12Speaker 1: They actually have little tubes there to put them together in a ratio and you can make your own blend.
- 30:17Speaker 1: I was able to do that also.
- 30:19Speaker 1: It's, i have that bottle around too.
- 30:24Speaker 1: But then whiskey thief is you're just getting barrel strength whiskey That's not been filtered or anything.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's just coming right out of the barrel, cold and delicious, and Even when it's warm out it still is coming out cold.
- 30:39Speaker 1: It's a.
- 30:40Speaker 1: It's really a kind of a cool thing.
- 30:41Speaker 1: So then You know.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Getting down to the other stuff, i mean the valinch, the copper dog, the dipping dog, i think in in a German It's called the.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It's called the stick stick.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Wait, stekiber, st Stekiber, it's a Stekiber, so that's what that's called in German.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So all the different cultures had a way to get into those barrels up.
- 31:12Speaker 1: But how would you figure that they wouldn't right?
- 31:15Speaker 1: 100%.
- 31:17Speaker 1: They get into the barrels and It's.
- 31:21Speaker 1: It's a lot of fun and I would suggest to anybody This particular tool, i really think is one of the cooler Tools out there.
- 31:32Speaker 1: You can just see the handles, copper.
- 31:35Speaker 1: You got the brass top, the brass bottom.
- 31:37Speaker 1: You just drop that baby in.
- 31:39Speaker 1: But it's just so beautiful.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna give this a polish, one of the things that you can use, the normal tarnished removers.
- 31:46Speaker 1: But the bar keepers friend and I got some of that.
- 31:48Speaker 1: So I'll probably be hitting that Before the next time I get to use this, but hopefully I'll get to use it soon.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'll drop it back into the bag, put it back up on its little stand.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Oh, let's see.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Let's try this again.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I Don't understand what's going on, but I'm gonna try.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Let's see if I could get that stuff through.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I haven't been able to pull that through, so I'll pull it through on the other side.
- 32:18Speaker 1: There we go.
- 32:19Speaker 1: That'll allow me to open it up and drop it in.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yep, and There we go.
- 32:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I saw that we had decent amount of Numbers tonight of people watching.
- 32:37Speaker 1: I really appreciate everybody.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I'm dropping that back up there, my little Venom partner.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I'm glad that you all could drop in.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Talk about a whiskey thief.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you have ever got a chance to use it one, but I am telling you, if you get a chance, it Not only it's that, if you're getting a chance to use a whiskey thief, not only is that fun and putting it into your glass.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I just finished.
- 33:04Speaker 1: We did a new riff pick and we were able to thief Three.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Seventy five are 200 milliliters sample bottles after the pick was done, and That was a lot.
- 33:15Speaker 1: You could check out my reels Under Jeffrey Mueller because there's a lot of thiefing that goes on in those reels.
- 33:21Speaker 1: You could see all the different places.
- 33:23Speaker 1: But also when you thief the whiskey right out the barrel, It's.
- 33:28Speaker 1: There's something about being in a distillery that makes that whiskey E taste so, so damn good.
- 33:35Speaker 1: You're there with good people a lot of times.
- 33:38Speaker 1: We're there with the owners And or we're there with the master distiller and then you're in the Rick house smelling all those smells and And those aromas and then you get to basically get that whiskey right out the barrel and taste it right there in the Rick house.
- 33:54Speaker 1: For some reason it makes the whiskey taste So fantastic.
- 33:58Speaker 1: So you know there's a bunch of stuff.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You know there's a bunch of things that happen during your experiences.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And if you're using a whiskey thief, i'm telling you You really 100% are having a good experience with whiskey.
- 34:14Speaker 1: So there you go.
