Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am link of the meanis and I'm here to
- 0:16Speaker 1: talk shit, fairtasy. You couldn't pick a better person to
- 0:21Speaker 1: talk shit with brother.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Today?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty good, actually.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Cool, Banana's Well. The ship that we are talking about
- 0:29Speaker 3: specifically is your new single Shutdown, came out back on
- 0:33Speaker 3: October the ninth grade. So yeah, perception meant for it
- 0:37Speaker 3: was that, sorry, Haw's the reception been for it?
- 0:40Speaker 4: I've talked well, I haven't talked to that many people,
- 0:44Speaker 4: but it seems to be pretty well received. You know,
- 0:47Speaker 4: it's something a bit different sexy.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Sexy is a word for you actually described it as
- 0:55Speaker 3: you said sonically, it's the meanings that they're sexiest, and
- 0:58Speaker 3: I've kind of agree. By there's a definite sense of
- 1:01Speaker 3: sex appeal and swagen to the song.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It turns me on listening to it.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I mean that sounds just stop mistler because I was
- 1:08Speaker 3: overstaired on in your pants, around your face though, reckon.
- 1:16Speaker 3: She's actually an old new song by Like, having been
- 1:18Speaker 3: recorded twenty five years ago, so yeah, for so.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Long we've gradually been.
- 1:26Speaker 4: We released, initially released like an AP and a couple
- 1:30Speaker 4: of EPs off that from that recording session.
- 1:34Speaker 2: The more traditional meanis type songs.
- 1:37Speaker 4: But you know, I was just a bit confused at
- 1:40Speaker 4: the time and kind of like record a whole bunch
- 1:42Speaker 4: of ridiculous shit. You know, it's like disco song, there's
- 1:45Speaker 4: fucking a country song.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I know what the fuck I was thinking.
- 1:48Speaker 4: But yeah, So we did release those, and we had
- 1:52Speaker 4: a whole bunch of other stuff that we've gradually kind
- 1:54Speaker 4: of like done a bunch of singles, you know, over
- 1:58Speaker 4: the last fIF teen years or whatever. So we'll have
- 2:03Speaker 4: one of those tracks on the A side and a
- 2:05Speaker 4: couple of Aussie bands covering our songs on the other side.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So we've been lucky enough to have some really good
- 2:11Speaker 2: bands do that.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah. Cool. Did you release it exactly as it was
- 2:16Speaker 3: recorded twenty five years ago, or did you touch it
- 2:18Speaker 3: up a bit? No?
- 2:19Speaker 2: No touching, No touching it. I can't do that anymore.
- 2:24Speaker 2: There's no touching anymore.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Allegedly, Agen. So you're just the same as you build
- 2:32Speaker 3: it out in the studio twenty five years ago. You
- 2:33Speaker 3: churn around and chuck it straight out.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Pretty much.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Nice work. That's the same, and it's a little different
- 2:41Speaker 3: music for you guys. So it was wrenching you were
- 2:44Speaker 3: contemplating back at that stage. Were you just having a
- 2:47Speaker 3: bit of.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Fun, No, just I just yeah, it's kind of like,
- 2:52Speaker 2: not that long after.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I did sumarow People, and I was kind of like,
- 2:56Speaker 4: you had a big on not being Pigeonhole, and now
- 2:58Speaker 4: it's like, why the fuck would you do that with me?
- 3:00Speaker 4: You just do it something else, which I did with
- 3:01Speaker 4: Tomorrow People, And yeah, it's just kind of stupid, but
- 3:04Speaker 4: it is what it is. And I actually quite like
- 3:06Speaker 4: that song, and I think that'll that song will work
- 3:09Speaker 4: pretty pretty well in the set where I've just been
- 3:12Speaker 4: learning the guitar that some of the funky guitar to
- 3:15Speaker 4: go with it to play along with Jaws, because it's
- 3:17Speaker 4: just I don't think it'll work live with one guitar
- 3:20Speaker 4: because it's kind of like, yeah, a little bit going on.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But yeah, I should be right by the show.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Hopefully we're having Redresshole here like while he should be
- 3:29Speaker 4: rocking up soon at my place. We're going to be
- 3:32Speaker 4: pressing just behind me in this room. So I've got
- 3:35Speaker 4: it all set up to play, got.
- 3:36Speaker 3: All the taxi down, the animals set up around watching
- 3:38Speaker 3: you play.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I had to.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I had to move the spy, the big were the
- 3:42Speaker 4: big spider on the roof. I had to take that
- 3:44Speaker 4: out because while he hates spiders, so.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I'm with him there. I ate the fuckings you touched
- 3:51Speaker 3: on the fact that you've got any bands do it
- 3:52Speaker 3: the B side, So on this particular one, you've got
- 3:55Speaker 3: friends that Wrong doing a version and play this song
- 3:57Speaker 3: every night. So personally, what was the idea behind having
- 4:00Speaker 3: other bands cover your songs? And secondly, how do the
- 4:03Speaker 3: our friends of Wrong boys get involved?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Well, they're friends of ours as all the bands that
- 4:10Speaker 4: we've had on our singles. I don't I can't remember
- 4:17Speaker 4: how how we even started. I think initially we were
- 4:20Speaker 4: going to do an album of just bands covering our songs,
- 4:23Speaker 4: and caught sounds like the Men. He's like those old
- 4:26Speaker 4: records like sounds like Alice Cooper or and you'd buy
- 4:29Speaker 4: it and you'd be phil ripped off because it's not
- 4:31Speaker 4: actually Alice Cooper. You know, someone covering them that.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 4: So yeah, As for a single idea, I don't know
- 4:40Speaker 4: whose idea that was. Probably Wally's.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Sounds like we are friends of boys had a bit
- 4:45Speaker 3: of fun with it, though they're they're half taken the
- 4:47Speaker 3: piss but half being serious, like.
- 4:49Speaker 4: They're not that's a pretty faithful rendition of the song
- 4:53Speaker 4: is actually better than our version.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Well it's on a part, let's put it that way. Yeah, No,
- 5:01Speaker 2: it's very good.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Those guys are just like fucking amazing live harmonis and
- 5:06Speaker 4: performers like it's we did that too with them, And
- 5:09Speaker 4: I was just like watching them just go fuck me,
- 5:11Speaker 4: you know, because I've always wanted to do three part
- 5:13Speaker 4: harmonies live and I've never really done. Every band I've
- 5:16Speaker 4: done has always been like two part harmonies and hadn't
- 5:19Speaker 4: had the third person to do it. So I've always
- 5:22Speaker 4: I mean, I did write three part harmonies for some
- 5:24Speaker 4: of the songs live they'd just be two part harmonies.
- 5:27Speaker 4: But you watch those guys do and they're just fucking
- 5:29Speaker 4: so spot on.
- 5:31Speaker 3: That's the thing. A lot of people look at friends
- 5:33Speaker 3: for their humor, you know, and they're on stagey's but
- 5:36Speaker 3: actually pretty fucking good musicians as.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Well, mind blowing were good. I mean I was watching
- 5:41Speaker 4: them with my jaw was sitting the ground. It's just
- 5:42Speaker 4: like I'd forgotten because I hadn't seen him in a
- 5:44Speaker 4: long time. And yeah, amazing, amazing.
- 5:47Speaker 3: And did the bands get to choose what song they
- 5:49Speaker 3: wanted to cover or do you just give them one
- 5:51Speaker 3: and say run with it.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You have to ask Wally that one. I think it's
- 5:54Speaker 2: just what was left.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I don't know, Yeah, no, I have no information.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah, well we'll move on to the second track then,
- 6:05Speaker 3: which is by Perth band called Leeches.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 3: They did a pretty good job of that too.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yeah, they're a really good live band, Leeches and also friends.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I'm playing Bennie's band. He's coming down.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Playing with the Meanies on every run of shows, and
- 6:20Speaker 4: I'm playing in his band with him, and will also
- 6:22Speaker 4: be rehearsing behind me just here on Saturday.
- 6:26Speaker 2: So I've got basically I've got the mean He's rehearsing tonight.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Then on Thursday I'm having a run through with Mark
- 6:31Speaker 4: McCartney who's playing in Bennie's band, and then rehearsing on
- 6:35Speaker 4: Saturday with Bennie's band.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So it's hopefully the neighbors don't.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Fucking hopefully they last the weekend.
- 6:42Speaker 4: At least we've got electronic drums though, so we can
- 6:44Speaker 4: do it at a kind of relatively kind of.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Acceptable level, you know, But your way that's hard. It
- 6:50Speaker 2: always turns up louder.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Going back to the start broad on. You got to
- 6:57Speaker 3: start around nineteen eighty eight, so yeah, I mean, if
- 7:00Speaker 3: you've got climate like in Australia at the time, that
- 7:02Speaker 3: gave birth to the.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Meaning where do we fit in?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Well, I don't think we ever really considered ourselves kind
- 7:10Speaker 4: of like a punk band, you know, when we've started
- 7:13Speaker 4: doing it.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It's just like and we didn't quite often.
- 7:15Speaker 4: We'd play with all sorts of different types of bands
- 7:19Speaker 4: and whatever, so we weren't really part of, I guess
- 7:21Speaker 4: the punk scene, but we'd cross over and some of
- 7:25Speaker 4: those bands that play with us and whatever.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But yeah, it was just it's so different now. I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 2: it's hard.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Kind of in remembering now because it's so feels so
- 7:36Speaker 4: alien the way it was back then. You know, it's
- 7:40Speaker 4: like you just you had no I mean there was
- 7:43Speaker 4: no when we started doing it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: There was no.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Chance of becoming big. I mean the biggest you could
- 7:51Speaker 4: hope for was playing to a thousand people. You know,
- 7:54Speaker 4: there was no we can be like Amaal and the
- 7:56Speaker 4: Smiffets or you know that sort of size band and
- 8:00Speaker 4: out sort of bands just didn't do that. You know,
- 8:01Speaker 4: Mudhoney had come in and played the old Greek or
- 8:04Speaker 4: you know, whatever to you know, fifteen hundred people, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 4: and that was as big as it got with the
- 8:11Speaker 4: alternative sort of music. And then of course Nirvana happened
- 8:13Speaker 4: and things changed and we still didn't get big.
- 8:19Speaker 3: There around around the same time the grunge did really
- 8:22Speaker 3: take off. Like was there a rivalry of sorts between
- 8:26Speaker 3: everyone else and grunge back then? Like were the nasty
- 8:29Speaker 3: cousins no one liked?
- 8:31Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I don't recall there being any I mean there was,
- 8:34Speaker 4: It was probably kind of with certain bands like Pearl
- 8:36Speaker 4: Jam or whatever. You had the kind of the backlash
- 8:39Speaker 4: and whatever. I don't I don't remember it ever happening
- 8:42Speaker 4: with to my knowledge, with Nirvana, you know, or like one.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Of those bands.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I mean, it's just I guess a lot of bands
- 8:51Speaker 4: I thought it was great because it gave them the
- 8:53Speaker 4: opportunity to maybe make make a quid if they got big.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And you've probably been just a few times before, brother,
- 9:01Speaker 3: but it still fascinates me, like the bound of bands
- 9:04Speaker 3: from your era, like You've got your Spider Baites, Cosmic
- 9:06Speaker 3: Psycho as your gurgitator, preenzil got the Rocky got Streaming Jets, Babe,
- 9:10Speaker 3: the Animals the Paul, Like, there's so many bands from
- 9:13Speaker 3: that era are still going and going strong, like, but
- 9:16Speaker 3: there's never been another era like it that I can
- 9:18Speaker 3: remember where there's so many and strong, Like what do
- 9:21Speaker 3: you put that down here? Do you put it down
- 9:23Speaker 3: to the fact that we just don't give a fuck
- 9:24Speaker 3: as we're old and we just still we want or.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I don't know. It could it's hard to say.
- 9:30Speaker 4: It could just be kind of like the bit of
- 9:32Speaker 4: old man kind of thing, just like sticking with what
- 9:34Speaker 4: you you know, was in your in your window of
- 9:39Speaker 4: like passion, you know, because when you're a teenage at
- 9:43Speaker 4: early twenties whatever, that's when you're to me, that's when
- 9:46Speaker 4: I was the most excited about seeking going out and
- 9:49Speaker 4: seeking music. So it's like you're always going to look
- 9:52Speaker 4: back at that as being, uh, you know, something special
- 9:57Speaker 4: that I don't know.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah, whatever it is, mate, keep it coming Oregon.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah, well we will.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Guys. You mentioned the fact you're practicing before, bro, that's
- 10:09Speaker 3: because you've got a single launch stall coming up. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 3: on the thirty person of October and you get Frankston,
- 10:14Speaker 3: the Newcastle and Sydney, so more in there. What God
- 10:21Speaker 3: can we expect from the meanings in twenty twenty five, Broh's.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Probably going to be pretty sad, to be honest, you know,
- 10:30Speaker 4: we're just hoping for people to let's just be patient
- 10:33Speaker 4: with us and forgiving.
- 10:35Speaker 2: You know, it's pretty pathetic.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I noticed there's no Brisbane in there. Itimt is that
- 10:42Speaker 3: to be an out sooner or you give me hope?
- 10:44Speaker 3: I hope?
- 10:44Speaker 2: So I always love going to Brisbane. Yeah, what's your space? Yeah? Yeah,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I'm sure we we'll get there sooners.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Now, before you go, bro, We've got a new segment
- 10:55Speaker 3: called photo Bomb, So basically itroll through your social media
- 10:58Speaker 3: and I'll come up with a few photos that I
- 10:59Speaker 3: want know some more about.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah, this one, like.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It doesn't look like the most comfortable place to sleep.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I think that.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I think of the guts there, I think that was
- 11:14Speaker 4: possibly the I think that was the Friends on tour
- 11:17Speaker 4: if I remember correctly. Yeah, just yeah, just in the
- 11:21Speaker 4: in the Virgin lounge.
- 11:23Speaker 2: You know you're getting free drinks.
- 11:27Speaker 3: What's for the fucking with the old bookmaker's bag there too, mate?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Ah right there? Yeah, I think of it as a
- 11:35Speaker 2: doctor's bag.
- 11:35Speaker 4: It's like I've got my box of tricks in there
- 11:39Speaker 4: to heal people, you know, sonically. Yeah, that's they're just
- 11:45Speaker 4: a solid touring bag. I put everything in there, my clothes, everything,
- 11:48Speaker 4: and that's all I take.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I've found one more than it's just classic band fucking
- 11:56Speaker 3: touring photo. This one.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Fuck is that Wally looks that looks fucking old.
- 12:04Speaker 3: That's from Germany in two thousand and nineteen.
- 12:08Speaker 4: No, No, it's not twenty nineteen ears, that's the nineties.
- 12:15Speaker 4: So because that's the only time we went to Germany
- 12:18Speaker 4: in the early nineties.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it looks like he's fucking.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah, because I remember that van.
- 12:29Speaker 4: There was no windows and just all of us have
- 12:31Speaker 4: been the back just rolling around, you know, like just
- 12:34Speaker 4: fucking bumping up against the wall, the walls, and it
- 12:38Speaker 4: was pretty uncomfortable, and you went it wasn't quite long
- 12:41Speaker 4: enough for the lie stretched out, So it's kind of
- 12:45Speaker 4: we had We had a big barrel full of lukewarm
- 12:47Speaker 4: fucking beer or covered in oil. I remember, yeah, no,
- 12:52Speaker 4: because we were in Spain and you couldn't get a
- 12:55Speaker 4: fucking cold drink at the servos for some reason. Things
- 12:58Speaker 4: have changed now, but so we we bought a we
- 13:01Speaker 4: found an old drum, but we didn't realize that had
- 13:04Speaker 4: oil in it, so you know, some still had resid
- 13:07Speaker 4: oil residue, so we filled it up with ice and
- 13:09Speaker 4: put the bier in there. Then eventually the cans will
- 13:11Speaker 4: end up being covered in oil.
- 13:12Speaker 3: And you drunk them anyway, didn't you of course? And
- 13:16Speaker 3: roll all right, brother, we thing very much for your time.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Made me to pure speaking, a single shutdown is out now.
- 13:22Speaker 3: It's a very smooth, fucking, funky sextual piece of chocolate.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Get along and see the boys that are so thanks mate,
- 13:32Speaker 3: as brother, you take care you too, so.
- 13:54Speaker 2: You just I'm sure lets some on the you're right
- 14:04Speaker 2: aside job. Everything is just you go yoana Roma my
- 14:10Speaker 2: pop is a consequent show. God no, you have a
- 14:14Speaker 2: test show.
- 14:15Speaker 3: That try that tried, you go as that tried. That's right.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You had a side shut down, cool it down a sto.
- 14:43Speaker 4: And now not just resistance.
- 14:46Speaker 2: You're just where's the persists?
- 14:49Speaker 3: I don't show. That's a on the back of that
- 14:52Speaker 3: ride that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: T you're right side, that's that's true, that's.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Shoot just kick shut.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Just fine you go. Oh my my bad, it comes
- 16:29Speaker 2: a question, God no.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Show shut down
- 17:01Speaker 4: You
