- 1:59the Co host of the Yanks go yard podcast.
- 2:02You can follow him on X at Tommy's under score takes as
- 2:06he's shown right here on the camera.
- 2:08It is Thomas Caranante. Join us today.
- 2:11How we doing Tommy? Good man.
- 2:13What's up boys? It's a pleasure to be here.
- 2:15Thanks for having me. I thought, you know, Tommy
- 2:18Scoops was on to something. I was getting ready to tune into
- 2:20the Yanks and saying, oh, this is the night they're going to.
- 2:22They're going to put me away. But yeah, man, try.
- 2:25I'm watching. I was watching the Dodgers and
- 2:27I'm just sitting here being like, I wish that was the
- 2:30Yankees. That was like the Yankees of 25
- 2:32years ago. And now we're just watching it
- 2:34pass us by. It certainly seems like they're
- 2:37a juggernaut, right? It just seems like the way that
- 2:39they're playing that they like, oh, yeah, You know, we got three
- 2:42guys that could be closers, whatever.
- 2:44One of them didn't play all season.
- 2:45He thought he was gonna be a starter.
- 2:47It's all right. We'll just put him in in the 9th
- 2:48inning. He'll throw 101 and he'll be
- 2:50your closer. It's fine.
- 2:51We have those guys. Why not?
- 2:54We'll just defer money. It doesn't matter.
- 2:56We just want to win championships.
- 2:58I wish the Yankees were doing that.
- 2:59I bet. Don't you think George
- 3:01Steinbrenner, if he was alive today, would have been jumping
- 3:03on this deferred money trick? I don't know.
- 3:06Yeah, you'd have to think so. But I, you know, you look back
- 3:09on all the things George Steinbrenner did.
- 3:11Would he be making the right deferred deals?
- 3:13I don't know. I I'd hope so.
- 3:15But but yeah, I mean, like the Dodgers have that perfect mix of
- 3:21the aggression and spotting the personnel.
- 3:25And to me, you know, just watching the Yankees for I
- 3:27started covering baseball back in 2014.
- 3:30So it was like in that no man's land era for the Yankees,
- 3:33Jeter's last year. And then ever since they've
- 3:37started contending again in 2017 to now, it's like seems like a
- 3:42personnel issue with them and can't put your finger on it.
- 3:45You don't really know. But I know there's always fans
- 3:47out there wishing George Steinbrenner was still there.
- 3:50And I'm like, there could have been a lot of disaster deals
- 3:52based on the bad contracts we've seen given out by the rest of
- 3:55the league. So who knows what free agency
- 3:57would have been in on at that at that point in time.
- 3:59But yeah, man, it's it's tough to watch a team like that, you
- 4:05know, deliver like Task or Hernandez didn't game one.
- 4:07And then they just, they apply the pressure and they have, they
- 4:10have talent at every corner of the roster that you can't seem
- 4:13to avoid. Yeah, I want to ask about the
- 4:15pitching woes in particular with the with the starters that we've
- 4:17seen this series. Obviously you had better
- 4:19pitching look at the against the Red Sox, especially with game
- 4:21three. But the struggles that they had
- 4:24bullpen more game one and then Max Freed having probably his
- 4:28worst start of the year in Game 2.
- 4:29Like what did you see from this? Is it more on them or is it more
- 4:32on the Blue Jays offense just going coming out?
- 4:36It's a good question and I I don't really know because the
- 4:39Yankees have just been downright bad at the Rogers Centre this
- 4:42year. Don't know what it is.
- 4:45I think. I think when you're in a in when
- 4:49you're in a situation to have a bullpen game in game one, you're
- 4:53you're at a disadvantage because the Blue Jays had the rest time
- 4:56and they were able to go at you with Kevin Gossman.
- 4:58So feel like if the Yankees were able to steal game one, that
- 5:02would have been the biggest bonus possible.
- 5:04They would have been in the best position imaginable at that
- 5:07point. Game 2 was just that was where
- 5:10it was bad. Max Freed doesn't have his best
- 5:14stuff. You can't really.
- 5:16I can. At least I can't blame him
- 5:18because it's his first year in pinstripes.
- 5:20Again, you're asking a lot of what the Yankees are doing, man,
- 5:24is that they're they're asking the pitchers to go out there and
- 5:26be perfect with what the offense is doing, which is really where
- 5:29I think the issue lies. The less margin.
- 5:31They're not playing relaxed. There is a razor thin margin for
- 5:34error. Freed was a little bit of
- 5:36execution he was having trouble locating for a good portion.
- 5:40For me, it comes down to I think the Blue Jays were obviously
- 5:43well rested and pumped and excited to go into the look.
- 5:46Everybody hates playing the Yankees, so all the all our
- 5:48opponents have that extra juice in them.
- 5:51But when they when we didn't have a bonafide game one starter
- 5:56going in the first one, then it put all the pressure on Freed
- 5:58and I think it's it's just tough for anybody to handle that.
- 6:00Jabba knows as a pitcher. Yeah.
- 6:03I mean, it's, I didn't really know what they were going to do.
- 6:07Who were they going to use? I don't know if that was a a
- 6:10number saying a kind of however they decided to, to use in in
- 6:15that situation, but they haven't given up 23 runs ever.
- 6:20Like in there's been, you know, the the woes of Aaron Judge and,
- 6:25and, and all that, but he's, he has four hits.
- 6:27He's leading, leading the team this year in hits.
- 6:30What like, I feel like there's something missing.
- 6:33And we, and we touched on this earlier, like we don't need a
- 6:36rah rah meeting. Like if we need a meeting in
- 6:39October, then we obviously aren't doing what we need to do
- 6:42in the 1st place. Like do you think there's some
- 6:45kind of disconnect in like trying to rely on judge too much
- 6:51where other dudes are like, and we know guys are, are good in
- 6:54the playoffs where you're waiting for him to go before
- 6:57everybody else goes because sometimes then it's like, OK,
- 7:00he's going now they're not well, he ain't going now.
- 7:02Everybody else starts going. Like they never seem to to
- 7:05cohesively go together. And I don't I don't know what
- 7:09what's missing there. Yeah, it's again, it's it's the
- 7:13the calendar flips to October and you see a completely
- 7:15different team almost. And it's not just this iteration
- 7:18of the roster, right? This has been some version of it
- 7:21since I mean, really 2017 was an Aaron Boom.
- 7:24But that year the offense was the reason they didn't get past
- 7:28the Astra and obviously the cheating, but the offense was
- 7:31the biggest reason there because they were unable to produce any.
- 7:34They were unable to produce runs and they didn't have.
- 7:37And it's like a dominant pitching staff that year looking
- 7:41at everything since Aaron Judge, Aaron Boone dating back to 2018.
- 7:47If they have that disconnect like you're alluding to, like
- 7:51the potential of everybody, like looking around, waiting for
- 7:54someone like Judge, that would be organizational, an
- 7:58organizational issue because they have gone through so many
- 8:01different iterations of this roster.
- 8:03They've put so many different pieces around Judge.
- 8:06I know Giancarlo Stanton's been the main constant over that time
- 8:10period, but he has carried the team on two different occasions.
- 8:14One was last year, the other was 2020.
- 8:16They didn't make it out of 2020 because of the rest of the
- 8:19lineup not being able to come through and some late bullpen
- 8:22meltdowns. But for everybody to not be
- 8:28dialed in themselves and looking at Aaron Judge, I think that
- 8:31would be a a very weird kind of cosmic issue.
- 8:36And it and it very it very much could be because whatever the
- 8:39personalities the Yankees are acquiring over these last few
- 8:42years, you do have that lack of, you know, killer instinct
- 8:45stepping up. I know it's it's easier to say
- 8:48for people who had watched baseball years ago because now
- 8:51hitting's, you know, easily the hardest thing to do in in any
- 8:54sport at this point. And I think he is a content
- 8:58creator. Jabba, you played so you've been
- 9:00around these guys and stuff like that.
- 9:01But you know, changing your approach when somebody's
- 9:03throwing 100 miles an hour is like you can only do that so
- 9:06successfully when you're facing, you know, when you have so few
- 9:08opportunities. So we do look at it at a lens
- 9:12where I think we acknowledge how difficult that is, but also at
- 9:16the same time, like where is the differentiating player profiles
- 9:20in the offense and the Yankees. I think it's the redundancy with
- 9:24the power and the reliance on the home run ball because in
- 9:28theory, the second Judge starts producing it, all the rest of
- 9:32the offense should start going. And he was actually getting hits
- 9:35in the wild Card series and the offense didn't really respond as
- 9:39emphatically as we had thought. So I really don't know what it
- 9:42is. I to me, I have to chalk it up
- 9:44to a personnel issue from, you know, going all the way back to
- 9:48the front office and who they're targeting every offseason or, or
- 9:52in trade talks. But I feel like it's a mystery.
- 9:55And I don't know what you guys think, but we've watched a lot
- 9:57of Yankees baseball and it's it's hard to pinpoint it.
- 10:02You know, we in actually before we get into it, we are being
- 10:05joined by Thomas Caranante, fan sided content director, Co host
- 10:10of the Yanks Goyard podcast, following at Tommy under Tommy's
- 10:13under score takes on XI. Got a question for you related
- 10:17to what you're saying? Because a lot of fans, myself
- 10:20included, have give a lot of blame to Aaron Boone this
- 10:23season. Some of it's overblown, some of
- 10:25it's not on my end. I can't understand some of the
- 10:29season decisions he's made this post season, like leaving Rodan
- 10:32in and game two in the wild card series when he had clearly lost
- 10:35it, got that one pitch, double hit, double play, and then he
- 10:38brought him back and he couldn't.
- 10:39You know, he's threw him, throwing wild pitches and he
- 10:41gets two guys on and then we lose the lead.
- 10:44I mean, we came back, but that wasn't a great decision.
- 10:47And then he continues to bring Luke Weaver in in tight spots,
- 10:52and he hasn't gotten an out this entire postseason.
- 10:55You know, with the rule that you got to face 3 batters, it's just
- 10:58three guys getting on against Luke Weaver because he's trying
- 11:01to stop this tipping of the pitches.
- 11:04We talked about it earlier tonight.
- 11:05I don't know if you can fix that, you know, on the fly under
- 11:08postseason pressure. So my question to you is what do
- 11:12you think is on Boone and what common criticism should be
- 11:16directed elsewhere? Yeah, I think there it's time
- 11:20and consequence for some of these things, right.
- 11:22So like I look at this post season and I think the the one
- 11:28blame you can put on Boone for what's happened so far is that
- 11:33he he misjudged when taking out Freed slash, bringing in Weaver,
- 11:37which you just mentioned and leaving Rodanin for too long.
- 11:41And then I think the biggest, obviously, in hindsight now, the
- 11:46biggest issue was yesterday bringing in Will Warren as early
- 11:48as he did because at that point, you got to just get out of the
- 11:52inning. You can't have the damage mount.
- 11:54And Will Warren is not, he's just not primed for that
- 11:56opportunity. He's not a reliever.
- 11:58He hasn't pitched in a week. He's going up against the Blue
- 12:01Jays in this pressure pack situation trying to stop, you
- 12:05know, from getting the team stomped on.
- 12:07And it just wasn't it. You need someone to get you out
- 12:08of there. And then look, the offense
- 12:09scores seven runs and if you hold them to six in that inning,
- 12:13you might have a different ball game.
- 12:14Who knows? The other side of the coin is
- 12:18like, he doesn't have that many weapons, right?
- 12:21I think a lot of times all of us collectively, we get on him for
- 12:25making the wrong bullpen decision.
- 12:26And I think that was more valid in in years prior.
- 12:31This year, it's not. It's hard for him to make the
- 12:34right choice every single night because of the limited options
- 12:39he's had. And that like David Bednar is
- 12:42the only one who you're saying this guy's getting ME3 outs,
- 12:45Everybody else is don't know what's going to happen.
- 12:49And for you, we could sit here and say the blame for bringing
- 12:54in Weaver, both in game one of the sock series because of how
- 12:57bad he had been in September. And then him being the first guy
- 13:01you go to in that razor thin lead against the Blue Jays was
- 13:07was troublesome because that guy's not delivering from you at
- 13:10that point. You're going to have to pivot.
- 13:12I don't know what the answer is because I think if Devin
- 13:15Williams comes in and melts down, I you know, you don't know
- 13:19what social media is going to look like.
- 13:20Those people are going to be going insane and say, oh, this
- 13:22was the choice. So I think it's it's a it's a
- 13:26can't win situation with Boone right now in terms of the the
- 13:30bullpen management, in terms of the messaging and I think the
- 13:35trusting of the starters. That's where really my that
- 13:39that's where I would assess the blame.
- 13:41So you look at the offense, obviously it's been years and
- 13:45years and years of them lacking preparedness or just not rising
- 13:48to the occasion. Yes, that falls on the players.
- 13:51But at some point, I feel like the manager has to figure out a
- 13:54way to interject till like something under the guys who are
- 13:57not coming through, whether that be through line up changes or
- 14:02what have you we talked, you know, the the Anthony Volpe
- 14:04conversation I think is something that relates to this a
- 14:07little bit, but not fully. It's like showing that there is
- 14:12discipline to go around when you're not performing.
- 14:15And I'm not saying discipline somebody in the postseason, but
- 14:18you had warning signs of some of these other things happening in
- 14:21the regular season. If there was more of a stern, I
- 14:23think management type of approach, players might be more
- 14:29inclined to step up or they might be better conditioned to
- 14:31step up is probably the best way to put it.
- 14:33So I think throughout the regular season, Boone deserves
- 14:39the blame for maybe the summer swoon that lasted almost three
- 14:42months, that if they win one more game, the Blue Jays are at
- 14:45Yankee Stadium for these first two games and they're and the
- 14:48Yankees aren't in Toronto, where they've been having trouble all
- 14:50year. So I think, and there's also
- 14:55final point here, it's tough to kind of pinpoint what the
- 14:59decisions Boone's making right? Because you know, the game one
- 15:02line up of the Red Sox series was not Aaron Boone.
- 15:06I think that was probably Brian Cashman.
- 15:09And you don't know what calls are being made from the front
- 15:11office to the dugout when Max Freed gets Jaron Duran in the
- 15:16first out of the 7th. So it's really tough to
- 15:20pinpoint. But I guess the only thing that
- 15:22Boone would be able to control is the energy and the messaging
- 15:27and the preparedness in the approach.
- 15:29And that's where I think often times in bigger moments, this
- 15:32team is lacking. So I want to shift to the front
- 15:34office perspective of with Cashman and with us, some of the
- 15:37executives too, like a lot of people were questioning with the
- 15:39trade deadline with the Yankees, like Ahmed Rosario, Ryan McMahon
- 15:42or kind of like these bench players.
- 15:44I liked Duvall at the time. I would have been wrong on that
- 15:47too, because I I I always thought he had good stuff.
- 15:49And then obviously Ben Norris worked out.
- 15:51But you see, it seems like Seattle that are very aggressive
- 15:53at the deadline where they did a kind of bolstering their lineup.
- 15:56And obviously there are there extremes like my New York Mets,
- 16:00unfortunately that traded everything and didn't and all
- 16:03those times, all those guys alternatively bust.
- 16:05So what do you think? Is there a move like you would
- 16:07have made if you were the Yankees and maybe would have
- 16:09bolstered them to maybe get the division title or even get a
- 16:13better playoff identity? You mean at the trade deadline?
- 16:17Yeah. So that's tough.
- 16:19I I thought a lot of what was available at the trade deadline
- 16:22was, you know, just setting up rival executives to overpay for
- 16:26something that they weren't necessarily going to get the
- 16:29value that they needed from it. I think the biggest problem was,
- 16:32for example, coming into this season with essentially no
- 16:35starting third baseman and no bench.
- 16:38And then that forced them to make all the moves that they had
- 16:40to make at the trade deadline. As opposed to them using the
- 16:44trade deadline, if this makes sense, as kind of a luxury item
- 16:50to acquire one or two more players, whether pitching
- 16:54positional that are going to get you over the hump and make you a
- 16:57juggernaut a little. I think a good comparison is
- 17:01like what the Dodgers did in 2021 when they got Max Scherzer
- 17:04and Trey Turner. Like that opportunity was not
- 17:06there this year. I understand that.
- 17:08But that's how the Yankees should be treating the trade
- 17:10deadline. And ever since like 2021, when
- 17:13they traded for Anthony Rizzo, they've kind of used the trade
- 17:16deadline out of necessity to repair the roster in the middle
- 17:19of the year. So then at that point, it's a
- 17:22tale of two rosters. You go with whatever you have on
- 17:27Opening Day, and then you say, oh, well, you know, 3-4 of these
- 17:30guys will be gone. Four or five of these guys will
- 17:32be gone at the trade deadline. And then you're talking about
- 17:35working in a whole new mix of players.
- 17:36So there honestly wasn't anybody that I would have gone overboard
- 17:42for at the trade deadline. I like this team a lot.
- 17:44It just came down to execution and them being able to weather
- 17:47the storm for the long season. The and I thought also all these
- 17:51other moves were good. Like I like Ryan McMahon a lot.
- 17:54The third base defense he's been providing has been game saving.
- 17:58If if we had, I don't. I think if we had anybody else
- 18:01there, we're looking at a different situation for either
- 18:04the playoff seating or our fate in the wild card series.
- 18:07I think Rosario was a great bench option to acquire as a
- 18:10platoon guy. Bednar was a huge acquisition.
- 18:16I I think you're right too, like everyone was on board with Duval
- 18:19at that time. It just didn't work out.
- 18:21And who knows? He he, he could end up being OK.
- 18:24He's under club control. But yeah, I think the biggest,
- 18:29the, the biggest issue is the lack of personnel when they're
- 18:33heading into the trade deadline because most other years they're
- 18:36not making transformative decisions like they did this
- 18:38year. Most of the years they're going,
- 18:40they're getting one or two more guys and then they're kind of
- 18:42calling it quits and it's not enough for what they need.
- 18:47They are how to put this. It's I've heard everybody's kind
- 18:53of thoughts on it from, you know, Mark Feinzan to everybody,
- 18:57you know, on sweep happens. Let's just let's just foresee
- 19:03it. It's it's what happens in the
- 19:05offseason is I don't think there's I don't think they're
- 19:09unloading anybody. I don't think as far as front
- 19:12office that is. And then do they make a push for
- 19:17another bullpen guy? Do they try and get a free
- 19:19agent? As far as an infielder, like
- 19:22what? Where do you see if if it
- 19:25happens tomorrow? What?
- 19:28What would you? Like to see the offseason look
- 19:31like compared to what you think it'll look like.
- 19:35Man, I haven't even thought that far because I thought for a
- 19:38second on Thursday that we'd be doing something special because,
- 19:40you know, eliminating the Red Sox like that was huge.
- 19:43You kind of felt the weight off your shoulders when that
- 19:46happened because of how how traumatizing it's been since
- 19:51since 2004. But I think for what?
- 19:55First of all, Boone's not going anywhere.
- 19:57For anybody listening here, I know that that's probably #1 on
- 20:00a lot of people's list. It ain't happening.
- 20:02You might be lucky if it's after 2026.
- 20:05When he has there's an option on his contract after next season.
- 20:09So then at that point, depending on how next year transpires,
- 20:13they'll make the decision there for this offseason.
- 20:17They and this is where I'm also conflicted because of how the
- 20:22postseason has gone down. Like now I am a little bit
- 20:25confused. You bring back Trent Grisham and
- 20:27Cody Bellinger, we talked about for a couple weeks on the NXL
- 20:33Yard podcast about giving him the qualifying offer and then
- 20:37you have your outfield picture for another year.
- 20:40You give him an opportunity to earn a lot and then hit free
- 20:42agency again. And you don't have to get locked
- 20:45into a long term pact. And I think Bellinger, even
- 20:48though the post season performance wasn't there so far
- 20:51in an, you know, honestly, in an abbreviated five games, it's
- 20:54hard to judge people like that. I, I think you kind of do have
- 20:58to bring him back because of how intrinsic he was to the rest of
- 21:01the line up. He was important in terms of
- 21:04having the Yankees remain relevant.
- 21:06If his bat's not there, I'm not sure.
- 21:10Again, we're, we're not where we are without him.
- 21:13And I, I don't think free agency, again, the Yankees don't
- 21:17go out and dish out a lot of long term contracts for big name
- 21:22players. So even if there were like a
- 21:25generational talent available this offseason, I think now that
- 21:29the fact that they just paid Max Freed on a deal like that,
- 21:33they're going to be conservative in their approach.
- 21:35So they're going to figure out how to get either shorter term
- 21:38deals or acquire guys through trades now that they're farm
- 21:43systems been a little bit more highly regarded by the outlets
- 21:45after their last couple drafts in international free agency
- 21:48periods. But yeah, I mean, the biggest
- 21:50thing for me is I think the rotation's fine.
- 21:53I don't think you have to do anything with that.
- 21:55You got coal returning. Cam Schlittler is obviously
- 21:59going to be the guy hopefully for years to come.
- 22:02The bullpen is really the issue here.
- 22:04I think you got to get 2 relievers who are capable of
- 22:09being flexible in inning 7 through 9.
- 22:12And again, I don't know who that's going to be.
- 22:14I don't know who's going to be available in the offseason.
- 22:16We have to wait for kind of prices on a lot of these guys to
- 22:20normalize as we get closer to the winter meetings.
- 22:23And then I think you need, I don't know, a couple more
- 22:28contact bats. I feel like we say that we say
- 22:30this every offseason, but what's Anthony Volpe's future?
- 22:34I'm not sure what's the platoon going to be like with Ben Rice
- 22:39and Austin Wells. I think that they're going to
- 22:44make it work with all their young players.
- 22:46I think there was overblown shatter.
- 22:48I think of, you know, rumors that they might.
- 22:51Bob Klapisch wrote about it. He said that there there there
- 22:53may be a possibility they explore a trade, but I don't
- 22:56know who's going to acquire him. And I don't think that's of the
- 22:59Yankees mindset to get rid of a homegrown player like that.
- 23:03But they do have to improve their bullpen for sure, because
- 23:08that's been a strength of theirs that they've kind of let go this
- 23:11year. And then they need more of like
- 23:17the best way to put it is like Jock Peterson esque guys from
- 23:20like 2021-2022, the guys who can come off the bench and give you
- 23:24in a bat and a big spot. Often times Adam Wine rib and I,
- 23:30my Co host on the XCR podcast, we joke and we just say the
- 23:34bench is just a bunch of random guys until they decide
- 23:37otherwise. And that's kind of the problem
- 23:39until they realize, oh, we need battle tested veterans on this
- 23:43bench to hit 95 mile an hour sinkers in the 8th inning when
- 23:46we have a runner on 3rd and our nine hitters up.
- 23:49So I. Wish we could all have a match
- 23:51stairs on our bench. I mean, they're they're out
- 23:55there every so often. So I think they just have to
- 23:58look a little bit harder. But you've seen that be the
- 24:01difference in how many post seasons And again, like.
- 24:07Nope, we just just got muted by accident.
- 24:09Looks like. There you go.
- 24:11Sorry, I was getting getting heated watching the Dodgers game
- 24:15and we see that they have guys who are primed for the moment.
- 24:19I don't know where Tay Oscar's balls came from.
- 24:23I really don't like he was, he led the league in strikeouts
- 24:26like 2 1/2 years ago and now all of a sudden he's a postseason
- 24:29God. Good for him.
- 24:30I've had an amazing time watching him, but I don't know
- 24:32like where that came from in terms of the Dodgers detecting
- 24:36that. But a guy like TK Hernandez, who
- 24:40is influential every October, it's almost automatic.
- 24:42Every time he's coming to the plate, he's getting a hit or
- 24:45he's or he's in the moment somehow and he's figuring out a
- 24:49way to either deliver or to move a runner over or to test the
- 24:53defense. Like, I don't know what it is.
- 24:55And I don't know how you identify those guys as a front
- 24:57office personnel. But I think it's fairly safe to
- 25:00say the Yankees have identified very little of those guys in the
- 25:03Aaron Judge era. And Aaron Judge hasn't had that
- 25:05type of support. I don't know where it takes them
- 25:08in terms of what I don't want to see is Bellinger and Grisham
- 25:13leaving and then like trying to piece meal that together with
- 25:19either lower leverage shinings or hoping for the best with
- 25:22Dominguez and Spencer Jones. Like that's what I don't want.
- 25:25All these younger guys and even the top hitters on the team need
- 25:30a bit of a softer landing with support around them.
- 25:32And it's like a weird imbalance that they have at the moment.
- 25:34We. Are talking to fan sighted
- 25:36content director Co host of the Yang Schoolyard podcast Thomas
- 25:41Caranante looks like the dodgers just going out the game right
- 25:47there. It's four to three final.
- 25:49They almost blew it. They brought in rookie Sasaki to
- 25:52face Trey Turner with two on and two out in the ninth and he gets
- 25:55them and they now up two O and the Dodgers look like they're in
- 25:59this. You know, everything that we
- 26:01thought is. Automatic man.
- 26:03Pretty. So let's let's talk about
- 26:05something positive. And his name's Cam Schlittler.
- 26:08Nothing made me happier then. Well, nothing in general makes
- 26:12me happier than when we get the best of Boston and this guy
- 26:15who's from there absolutely shoves on them yelling F Boston
- 26:19on the mound as he's walking off in between innings.
- 26:22And if he's not yelling, like under his breath, he's just calm
- 26:25and composed. I was saying earlier he looked
- 26:27kind of like Garrett Cole with his composure, you know, just
- 26:30looking like because he's got similar hair, but it's just he
- 26:34just looked really composed for a rookie in that situation.
- 26:38And then after the game goes online trolls their fans.
- 26:43I mean, it's like something that I like I drew up in like some
- 26:46kind of fever dream of like the next great pitcher.
- 26:48I want the Yankees to have like I look, he was good when he came
- 26:52up. I no, I didn't see this coming.
- 26:54I mean, this guy was throwing. They said, you know, 92 a few
- 26:58years ago and now he's up at the high 90s over, you know, there's
- 27:02something like 64 of his pitches were 98 or faster in this game.
- 27:06Second most of all time, which is just absurd is that I mean, I
- 27:11got to ask you, Tommy, how real is this guy?
- 27:14Because it's. Incredible.
- 27:15The ascension cannot be denied. And I think it's it's a it's a
- 27:20massive player development win for the Yankees and they've
- 27:22needed that for a while with all these younger guys who have come
- 27:25up in the last few years and haven't really delivered.
- 27:29When Schwitler came up earlier this year and immediately set
- 27:33like, I think the Yankees record in the stat cast era for most
- 27:37triple digit pitches, I was just like, where was any of this
- 27:42scouting for the last 15 years? Like what how did because you
- 27:46when all these other contenders reach the post season?
- 27:49I feel like there's a good amount they have like 1 flame
- 27:51throwing young guy in the bullpen or one middle of the
- 27:55rotation starter who has nasty stuff, and the Yankees just have
- 27:58not been able to get that out of their draft picks or
- 28:02international signings. And to see Schlittler succeed to
- 28:07the to the degree that he has with him almost being like a
- 28:13fringe prospect not too long ago is amazing.
- 28:15I think it's hard, like you don't want to over pipe him
- 28:20after that outing just because he's 15 starts into his MLB
- 28:23career. We've seen crazier things happen
- 28:25in terms of players getting injured or them losing their
- 28:28juice. But this is kind of the vibe
- 28:32that I think every Yankee fans been looking for, right?
- 28:34Like we've wanted that F you pitcher on the mound for the big
- 28:39games that that the Yankees have failed against their rivals.
- 28:44Like if you look at all the Yankees playoff defeats under
- 28:48Aaron Boone and in the modern era, it's against like Astros,
- 28:51Red Sox, Rays, Dodgers most recently.
- 28:54And then the only teams that they're beating are the
- 28:56Guardians, the Royals, the Twins.
- 28:59So they're that's where I think the mental edge comes in.
- 29:03And you need that with a pitcher who's fearless when facing an
- 29:07opposing lineup, especially a lineup like Boston or Houston,
- 29:10where they literally they walk into every game and they say,
- 29:13we're going to own this game at whatever point.
- 29:15And it's it's going to be the end of it for you Yankees.
- 29:18Like we've seen that transpire far too often.
- 29:20But I think Schlittler is legit. His pitch mix is incredible.
- 29:24The velocity is incredible. The attitude is awesome.
- 29:27I think he did a great way of introducing himself to this fan
- 29:30base. I don't want it again.
- 29:32I don't want to get too ahead of myself and start anointing him
- 29:36the next ace. But like, if he's pitching
- 29:38around freed and cold for the next few years, like that's what
- 29:41you're looking at. If they can cultivate him the
- 29:43right way and keep him on his trajectory like this is going to
- 29:46be a massive win for the Yankees development system.
- 29:51All right. My last question, just general
- 29:52pick for the rest of the postseason, is it the Dodgers?
- 29:54Is there another team that you think can make noise?
- 29:57Who you got? Yeah, I mean, after Friday night
- 30:00I said in my head, the Dodgers, that was just a a back breaking
- 30:04loss for the Phillies and I think that was a tone setting
- 30:08win for the Dodgers. My pick before that was the
- 30:11Mariners and I just, I don't think I can get on board with
- 30:14it. Maybe they win the AL, but I
- 30:16don't know who's defeating the Dodgers.
- 30:19Yeah, the Mariners are a fun team that they've been, they've
- 30:22been really a feel good story this year.
- 30:25But like you look at the Dodgers just right now, I think they
- 30:28tricked everybody with thinking that their bullpen was bad
- 30:30because now Glass, now Clayton Kershaw and Rokie Sasaki are in
- 30:35the bullpen all of a sudden. And now everybody who's sitting
- 30:38there saying, Oh, well, you know, Gessia and Trinon have
- 30:42been struggling and you know, the the middle group of it,
- 30:44they, they booted a couple of guys from the wild card roster
- 30:48when they moved on to the DS roster.
- 30:49And now they just levelled up in three ways that nobody really
- 30:52saw coming. I just they're the Champs until
- 30:56someone tells me otherwise. Yeah, it it's kind of
- 31:02interesting when when you look at it, it's the parody in the
- 31:06game is is kind of 1 sided towards, you know, they'd look
- 31:10at like, oh, it's the deferred money this D and it kind of got
- 31:14brought up the other day too. And today I saw is like, do you
- 31:19feel like what the Dodgers are doing?
- 31:21More people should follow that because it puts them in this
- 31:24situation every year. Yeah.
- 31:26I mean, it's obviously, I think only a select few teams can do
- 31:31this. There's the teams with the top
- 31:33five attendance marks every year and sometimes that even that
- 31:38even changes. So it would be tough for like
- 31:42the only teams that are able to do it are probably Yankees,
- 31:45Mets, Dodgers. The Padres have crept up there.
- 31:48But I know they they've had some financial issues over the last
- 31:51few years and and Phillies and we just saw the Mets take a
- 31:56version of the mega spending and they had one of the most
- 32:00historical lapses of all time. So it comes down to, again, I
- 32:04think if it's you have the right front office personnel spotting
- 32:09the right players to overspend on or to defer money on, if you
- 32:13want to put yourself in a precarious financial situation,
- 32:16then great. But like, I don't know how far
- 32:19other teams can go. Like the Mets almost had a $400
- 32:22million payroll and they're they're, they somehow didn't
- 32:26make the playoffs. The Reds, who had a third of
- 32:28their payroll, made the playoffs.
- 32:31So it comes down to I, I don't think, I think really the bigger
- 32:34conversation here is that just because you spend everybody
- 32:37who's like, oh, the Dodgers and Yankees have the top payrolls
- 32:40every year, they're ruining the game.
- 32:41Steve Cohen going out and buying whoever he wants is ruining the
- 32:44game. And it's like, no, it's not.
- 32:46I before I popped on the air, Jabba, you were talking about
- 32:492009. The Yankees spent a billion
- 32:51dollars that offseason, and I think that was one of the few
- 32:55times ever that having that type of approach worked.
- 32:58But it was also a testament to the all of the players who came
- 33:02in and had to assimilate with the roster and get to know
- 33:05everybody and then also step up in the biggest moments in their
- 33:08first impression. That's an absolutely incredible
- 33:11thing to do. And the fact that the Dodgers
- 33:13were kind of able to replicate that over the last couple years
- 33:16in a sense, it speaks to they're going after the right guy.
- 33:18So I think, you know, as a fan, I want my owner to spend.
- 33:22But you got to have the right guys in that front office
- 33:24choosing who to spend on because we, I think we've seen enough
- 33:27times over the last few years how it could blow up in your
- 33:28face. Tommy, we really, really
- 33:33appreciate you coming. Thank you guys.
- 33:36We know that you're the fan sided content director.
- 33:38You're the Co host of the Yankees go yard podcast.
- 33:41We can find you on X at Tommy's under score takes.
- 33:45Tommy What? What else can we do that to
- 33:47check out your stuff? Oh, like and subscribe to the
- 33:49Yanks Go Yard YouTube channel. We're going live every Monday
- 33:53and Thursday at 2:00 PM Eastern. That's our usual schedule.

- 34:00Offseason will be here. We go live at different times,
- 34:03so if you like the channel, then you get an alert for when we're
- 34:06we are podcasting at outside of our normal hours and
- 34:10yanksgoyard.com written content all over there.
- 34:14All things Yankees, so much stuff in terms of roster
- 34:18conundrums, injury news, opinion pieces, all the stuff that fans
- 34:22like to read on their commute to work.
- 34:23So that's where I'm at and appreciate you guys taking the
- 34:27time to have me on tonight. It was awesome.
- 34:29Tommy, you were fantastic. Let's cross our fingers and, you
- 34:32know, do some voodoo to get the Yankees through these next
- 34:35couple of games, perhaps. I don't know, I'm not super
- 34:37hopeful, but I've been wrong about virtually everything.
- 34:39So hopefully that's that street continues, at least for the
- 34:43Yankees sake. Again, thanks a lot man, and
- 34:45we'll try to get you on another time real soon.
- 34:47Sounds good guys. Let's go, Yanks.
- 34:49Let's go Yanks and guys. That was Thomas, Karen Nante.
- 34:54Well, he was really good, man. Like I asked the question and
- 34:59nobody seems to want to blame Boone, you know, Like I, I feel
- 35:04like it's just in my heart, just as a Yankee fan growing up that
- 35:08you throw the manager under the bus.
- 35:10So what, you know, Billy Martin got fired 7 times I think.
- 35:14Something like that. They all kept coming.
- 35:16Back, they come back, He's part of the family.
- 35:19Look, you get your fight with family and then you bring them
- 35:21back. That that was how it was for a
- 35:24long time with the Yankees. Yogi Berra, there's all sorts of
- 35:26stuff like that with the Yankees.
- 35:27Gene, Gene Monahan used to tell you, I mean, he was there for 50
- 35:31years and literally he would tell stories and he'd be like,
- 35:34yeah, boss would come down somebody's injury or whatever,
- 35:36he would fire me. He goes, it just got to the
- 35:38point where it didn't even matter.
- 35:39I just showed up the next day and he'd come down and like
- 35:42nothing ever happened. And he goes, that's pretty much
- 35:45what it was. So everybody kind of just went
- 35:47about their way unless, unless he really got mad, then he knew
- 35:49it. But yeah, he fired everybody and
- 35:51everybody's like, that's the boss being the boss.
- 35:52We're going to come back until he literally tells us to go.
- 35:56It's just a different, different times.
- 35:58You know those, those are the classic Yankee days.
- 36:01Hopefully they can turn it around.
- 36:03Well, if not, we're definitely going to talk about it on next
- 36:05show on Thursday. But before that, we got to go
- 36:09from playoff teams to two teams that have no chance in hell
- 36:14whatsoever of sniffing the playoffs this season.
- 36:17Yes, it's the other. It's the New York football
- 36:19teams. It's the New York Giants and The
- 36:21Jets. Just some more depressing news.
- 36:24New York football might be hitting rock bottom as both
- 36:28teams lost in their own different pathetic fashions in
- 36:31Week 5. First off, let's start with The
- 36:33Jets. They lost to the Cowboys 37 to
- 36:3622, virtually all of the offense coming in garbage time against
- 36:40soft coverages in the fourth quarter.
- 36:42The Jets defense also continued to be atrocious, allowing 416
- 36:46total yards, including 180 on the ground, and five total
- 36:51touchdowns. The team has not forced a single
- 36:55turnover in the first five weeks of the season, which is the
- 36:59first time speedy that this has happened since the height of the
- 37:03Great Depression in 1933. The Jets are also the last
- 37:09winless team remaining in the NFL this season thanks to the
- 37:12Giants. More on that in a second, but
- 37:14fantasy stats galore in this laffer For quarterback Justin
- 37:17Fields, who finished with 283 yards and two touchdowns, rookie
- 37:21Titan Mason Taylor had 9 catches and 67 yards.
- 37:24Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson had six catches, 71 yards
- 37:28and a touchdown. Having those strong fantasy days
- 37:31against those prevent defenses. Teams are playing against The
- 37:34Jets in the fourth quarter and then down by the Bayou the
- 37:37Giants beat themselves turning the ball over five times with
- 37:42costly drops along the way. Rookie quarterback Jackson Dart
- 37:45in the second NFL start, finish 26th of 40 passing with 202
- 37:49yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 picks and a fumble loss for a 73.1 passer
- 37:54rating. Which I guess is OK.
- 37:57A week after giving the Chargers the first loss of the season,
- 37:59the Giants loss to the Saints 2614, giving them their first
- 38:03win of the season. The Giants were actually up 14
- 38:07to three in the second quarter before completely melting down,
- 38:09giving up 23 unanswered points. There's an 80 plus yard
- 38:12touchdown by Rashid Shaheed and then the Giants try to do a flea
- 38:16flicker to Darius Sladen, who in very Darius Sladen fashion,
- 38:21dropped the ball, left the game hurt, had a bad fumble along the
- 38:25way, exited with three catches and 31 yards on 6 targets in his
- 38:29attempt to fill in as the new #1 receiver after the Giants lost
- 38:34Malik Neighbors for the season last week with a torn ACL.
- 38:39Oh my God. Well, I said we'll start with
- 38:42The Jets first. The Jets were a joke.
- 38:45They showed up against Dallas with no chance of being
- 38:49successful. This Dallas defense sucks and
- 38:52The Jets offense did nothing. And on top of this, Aaron Glenn
- 38:58was this vaunted defensive coordinator who now has the
- 39:02worst defense in football. They're the worst.
- 39:06It's almost 100 years. I said 1933 was the last time an
- 39:10NFL team over there. Six teams back then, speedy.
- 39:131933 was the last time A-Team went the first five games of the
- 39:18season without forcing A turnover.
- 39:20It's unbelievably bad defense, 400 plus yards.
- 39:24They're just terrible and you don't understand why.
- 39:28You have guys on the team. You have a top five corner in
- 39:32football in Sauce Gardner. You have Will McDonald, who's a
- 39:37pretty darn good end. You have Quinn Williams, who's a
- 39:40top 10 to top five defensive tackle in the league.
- 39:44What's the problem? Why can't they even be
- 39:48competent? Defensively, their special teams
- 39:51aren't much better and offensively they make lots of
- 39:54mistakes. Justin Fields is showing why
- 39:57every team seat keeps passing on him.
- 40:00Look, he's great against soft coverages where they're letting
- 40:03you throw underneath and getting guys open.
- 40:06And then they're playing some kind of like deep off man where
- 40:10the quarterback and run and get some yards.
- 40:13So his stats look great. If you took if you had him in
- 40:15fantasy, great job by you this week.
- 40:18But it's a fantasy if you think this guy is beating any kind of
- 40:21competent team if The Jets fall behind.
- 40:23They can't put up offense. It's awful.
- 40:27And I don't know if it's all Justin Fields, his fault.
- 40:29I don't think it is. I think it's the coaching.
- 40:33I don't think they have a good system.
- 40:35I don't think they are ready to deal with a quarterback that
- 40:38might be limited. Now, if you gave Justin Fields
- 40:40to a guy like Shanahan, I know Errol would hate me saying that,
- 40:44but maybe that's why I said it. But a real like a McVeigh, a
- 40:48quarterback, a guy who's going to get a quarterback straight,
- 40:51obviously maybe not Brian Dabel after what we've seen more in
- 40:54him in a second, but it's he's he doesn't have it here.
- 41:00They're not good. The the thing on Fields was, you
- 41:03know, Speedy, we talked about this a week or two ago, you
- 41:05know, similar to Jalen Hurts, they said he was a one read
- 41:08quarterback coming out of college.
- 41:10Justin Fields might be kind of not necessarily A1 read
- 41:14quarterback, but it's you're reading high, low, which could
- 41:17be you're you're deciding between two receivers or you're,
- 41:20you're reading a corner. If he's going to bail or he's
- 41:22going to stay up and or it could be a safety or maybe you have
- 41:25some RP OS where you're reading a running back, a linebacker or
- 41:28something. He's not doing anything crazy
- 41:30advanced. If he's supposed to look off one
- 41:32side, play if they're in a certain coverage and go to the
- 41:34other side, he ain't doing it, man.
- 41:36They're not having competent offense.
- 41:39It's really tough to watch. And if I'm, if I'm a Jets fan at
- 41:44this point, and thankfully I'm not, not that my team is any
- 41:46better, slightly better. Maybe I, I mean, Abdul Carter's
- 41:50pretty damn good. It's fun to watch, but I don't
- 41:52really know what I'm thinking if I'm a Jets fan because that
- 41:54Cowboys defense is supposed to be terrible and they couldn't do
- 41:57anything until the game was over.
- 42:00I mean, what, what was it? It was like 40, like they were
- 42:03down what, 30 points before they started scoring, something like
- 42:06that. I know they only had six points
- 42:08going into the fourth quarter. So all those points came in the
- 42:11fourth quarter against prevent defense.
- 42:14I don't know, man. I think it's a top three pick
- 42:17for The Jets this year. Maybe that's what they need.
- 42:19Maybe they do need to get that quarterback.
- 42:21There are a few guys coming out. We know the South Carolina guy
- 42:24sellers. We know LS US quarterback wasn't
- 42:28I keep forgetting his name. Nussen.
- 42:29Nussen Meyer. I was going to say Nussen
- 42:31Bamley. He was Jewish.
- 42:32Nussen Meyer. There's guys Carson Beck will
- 42:34come out this year. I still like Carson Beck.
- 42:37I know people are down on him. I still like Carson Beck.
- 42:40It's another year of him. Playing is me on like year 7.
- 42:43Hey, look, so was Jayden. Jayden Daniels played six years.
- 42:46You got to remember that stuff. It's a little bit different
- 42:49these days. It's not, you know, we're not
- 42:51going to talk about him tonight again.
- 42:52We'll talk about him probably more on Thursday.
- 42:54But Mark Sanchez came out as a junior, I think it was, you
- 42:58know, there are other quarterbacks.
- 43:00Sam Darnold, I believe, came out before his senior year.
- 43:03Not always the best way to go. You do need that seasoning and
- 43:06learning how to do more advanced things as a quarterback.
- 43:09I, I look at it like, you know, I, I coach high school football
- 43:13and like the stuff we're asking quarterbacks to do is obviously
- 43:15very remedial compared to what's going on.
- 43:18But it's like that as a quarterback, you're leveling up
- 43:21like if you ever played like like a Guitar Hero, you know how
- 43:24they have like beginner mode up to expert mode and everything in
- 43:27between? Well, if you get up to expert
- 43:29mode, your hand is flying all over the place.
- 43:32That's I, I would say the best way to compare what it's like
- 43:35being a high school to a college to AD 1 to a, you know, big time
- 43:40pro quarterback. It's just a lot more is
- 43:43happening and you have to be a lot more versatile.
- 43:45I, I don't think Justin Fields has it.
- 43:49I don't, I think it's pretty clear he doesn't at this point.
- 43:51They're going to need a big thing to change if that's going
- 43:54to happen. And they really need to create
- 43:55an infrastructure of an offense that can work with a quarterback
- 43:59that they draft because it's pretty clear they're going to
- 44:01draft the quarterback high this year.
- 44:03Yeah, the philosophy is there to draft a quarterback regardless
- 44:06of how well field is played. And I think still has been more
- 44:08of a net positive for The Jets this year considering the
- 44:11circumstances as the first year of a system.
- 44:13It's the first year of a new coaching staff.
- 44:15So that combined with his contract being movable, like
- 44:20he's a bridge guy, he's a perfect bridge guy forever.
- 44:22Where they draft because wherever they draft, like
- 44:24they're going to get a quarterback that is going to be
- 44:28either somewhat raw or somebody that's coming off a bad year.
- 44:32Nuts. Meyer is a good talent.
- 44:33He's had a bad last couple games.
- 44:36Kate Klobnick, I was mentioning for Clemson's had a really bad
- 44:38year where he probably shouldn't declare at this point.
- 44:41And then you have the Uprising guys.
- 44:44Mendoza, Indiana is one that's definitely a possibility is a
- 44:48guy that's a high riser. He's faced really good
- 44:50competition this year. And this is the Big 10 that had
- 44:53a lot of good defenses. So again, whatever combination
- 44:56of quarterback that you end up taking is it's going to be
- 44:59somebody that The Jets should try to develop more and not
- 45:02throw them into the fire like we've seen The Jets do with Zach
- 45:05Wilson, like we've seen them do with Mark Sanchez in the past.
- 45:08And guys, guys that were not as more raw than was perceived, I
- 45:13know when it came to the talent level of Jets had with Sanchez
- 45:18there already, maybe it was easy for them to say at the time, all
- 45:20right, this is already a pretty loaded team.
- 45:22But we were thinking this year that especially on defense, The
- 45:25Jets talent was going to be there.
- 45:26But you have linebackers that are kind of more built for
- 45:30Robert Salas defense. You've got defensive tackles
- 45:33that maybe were more built to be like these 43 type pass rushers
- 45:37and just not as much as like Aaron Glenn's trying to play a
- 45:40hybrid defense, more 43 than 3-4.
- 45:43But it's a little different still for a lot of these player
- 45:46types. And with the types of guys he
- 45:48had in Detroit, it looked like you would think all right, you
- 45:50could ease and transition it with The Jets.
- 45:52Lions had trouble developing defensive tackles.
- 45:54They had the linebackers now, but they had trouble with that
- 45:56for a while trying to patch together what they have.
- 45:58Matt Patricia there, that's what was I was encouraged most with
- 46:01Glenn when he when he got that head coaching job.
- 46:03They were it wasn't A1 style type of guy and that's why I'm
- 46:07surprised these players have not been able to evolve into that
- 46:10system. You mentioned sauce.
- 46:11He's had a rough year. Will McDonald's played well, but
- 46:13Quinn and Williams has been down and the offense they're again,
- 46:17they're playing well considering the circumstances, but they can
- 46:19only do so much when they're not as like talent limited besides
- 46:23probably Garrett Wilson and Fields the way he's played this
- 46:25year. Breece Hall's been up and down,
- 46:27it just it's not ideal for a circumstance.
- 46:29But like you said, the 0 turnovers for a defense you
- 46:32would think that Talent said is definitely surprising.
- 46:34But it's the big plays and the run defense more for me because
- 46:38the turnovers are something that sometimes you have turnover
- 46:40defenses that aren't that are bad yardage defenses or they
- 46:43allow big plays and penalties. Defenses like Green Base had a
- 46:46lot of defenses like that in the past, but they're top 2 seeds
- 46:50when Aaron Rodgers was there because they had still getting
- 46:52turnovers and they could still score a lot.
- 46:54But sometimes you don't have that kind of thing.
- 46:55But the fact that they're allowing so many big plays and
- 46:58are as undisciplined as they are is very surprising.
- 47:02Yeah. I mean, you guys obviously see
- 47:04it directly more so than us being here.
- 47:07But I was always wondered like you go from Robert Sell as a
- 47:10defensive guy to Aaron Glenn is the defensive guy.
- 47:12Now you have the worst defensive football.
- 47:14Like am I missing something? Like Fish, you obviously know
- 47:18better than any of us because you're a coach, but like, I'm
- 47:21not an expert by any means, but you go from a defensive guy to a
- 47:25defensive guy and you get worse. And Speedy touched on the
- 47:28different dynamics of how they developed from the defensive
- 47:31side of the ball. But that really like that.
- 47:35For me it is is missing the mark because you go from 1, you saw
- 47:39what he did and obviously it took a little bit behind
- 47:42Campbell and the Lions and then bringing it and then now.
- 47:44You get worse. I'll give you a name as part of
- 47:47the reason why they got worse. And speedy, I was talking about
- 47:50this. At the end of last year, CJ
- 47:52Mosley retired. CJ Mosley was the middle
- 47:55linebacker who was the captain of the defence.
- 47:57Look, he wasn't the same player as he was in throughout his
- 47:59career. But if you don't have guys
- 48:01getting people set right in my and look, I'm not sitting there
- 48:04grinding jets tape. I'm sorry, Jets fans, I, this
- 48:08isn't the most all 22, you know, centric analysis here, but I'm
- 48:13just going to go out on a limb and saying that the defence
- 48:15isn't lined up right very often and that they don't have guys
- 48:18communicating well to get lined up right.
- 48:21And when that happens, edges get get, you know, burned.
- 48:26You're going to get contained, lost, you're going to have
- 48:29coverages blown, and you're just going to be out of position.
- 48:33Not everybody. But if you don't have that elite
- 48:36communicator inside, things are really hard.
- 48:39Like, even at like the high school level, we just didn't
- 48:42have that two years ago. We went to the state semifinals.
- 48:45We had a middle linebacker went to Harvard.
- 48:47The dude was like reading self help books while everyone else
- 48:49was playing around the study hall.
- 48:51That kid was a genius. Love that kid, hope he's doing
- 48:54really well the year after. Good kid too, just didn't really
- 48:57have the acumen for the game, you know, in the same way.
- 49:00I mean, there's only so many kids that go to Harvard and do
- 49:02that type of stuff. But he was a coach on the field.
- 49:05And having that makes your defense so much better because
- 49:08you could react so much faster. And you need that in the NFL.
- 49:13The Giants, when they won with Eli, traded for Antonio Pierce.
- 49:17Antonio Pierce wasn't a world leader at linebacker, but he was
- 49:20a great communicator, became a coach, short lived, but you
- 49:23know, became a coach. This is the type of guy that you
- 49:26want on your field, on the defense.
- 49:30Ed Reed is another example of a type of guy that would be the
- 49:33captain of the secondary. Now, you also need guys like
- 49:35that to have the secondary aligned right, because in the
- 49:38NFL it's so complicated. You're not leaving it all up to
- 49:41the middle linebacker. He's probably just taking care
- 49:43of the front seven in the secondary.
- 49:45You know, they might have the past strength opposite the run
- 49:47strength a lot. So you're going to end up having
- 49:50that, which is just, there's a lot of guys communicating and if
- 49:54it just feels like they don't communicate well, that they play
- 49:57slow and they shouldn't because they have some dudes on that
- 50:00defense. They still do.
- 50:03And it's just really hard to watch the brand of football
- 50:06they're putting out there right now.
- 50:07I don't really know how else to explain to Jabba.
- 50:09I just don't think they're very good.
- 50:11And I don't think, you know, maybe it's a Joe Douglas not
- 50:13being their thing. I don't think Joe Douglas, if he
- 50:16was the GM, would have allowed this team not to be sound with
- 50:19communication, you know, with veterans at the right positions,
- 50:23you know, on the defense. I, I, I think Joe Douglas was a
- 50:26very good GM And I think that the ownership and Ariel doesn't
- 50:30believe me on this one. He doesn't want to throw no
- 50:32ownership under the bus. But I'm telling you, ownership
- 50:35has their their fingerprints all over all these mistakes The Jets
- 50:38are doing. I'm convinced.
- 50:41So let's talk about the Giants. This is a different way to lose.
- 50:45The Giants decided to lose by being better than the other
- 50:49team. Except for in the turnover
- 50:51battle. They put the ball on the ground.
- 50:53Was it 3 times with two picks? Jackson Dart was running, just
- 50:57dropped the ball. No one touched him.
- 50:59That's frustrating. Cam.
- 51:00Scataboo. Scataboo.
- 51:02I keep saying Bow. It's Scataboo.
- 51:05Scataboo dropped and had a fumble and then was looking at
- 51:08his gloves like it was the gloves fault.
- 51:10Like he's like a kid that played JV football or something.
- 51:13I love like that's in any sport, like they drop one or like in
- 51:16baseball, they look at the glove and then tighten like tighten
- 51:18the string. Like that's like your first
- 51:20ever. Like it's like you you're not
- 51:24taught that, but it's like the first thing any like any kid or
- 51:28whatever. And you still see it in the big
- 51:30league level in in every like in every night from from, you know,
- 51:34from pee Wee's to the NFL, like even in travel ball to the big
- 51:39leagues, Like the first thing they do is like, look at their
- 51:41glove Titan Mr. like, Oh yeah, I was the glove.
- 51:43Not a user error. It was just so bad watching as
- 51:46much as I did. I was I was doing a bunch of
- 51:49stuff that day. I saw the game go the wrong way.
- 51:51It all happened on the Rashid Shaheed home run touchdown.
- 51:55Speedy, he gets an 8 with an 87 yard something ridiculous to
- 52:00Shaheed. Again, just a broken coverage.
- 52:03Tyler Newman does not look fast enough to cover guys at this
- 52:07level, at least if they're not getting them any kind of, you
- 52:10know, look, they're playing. So here's the thing.
- 52:13The Giants are playing loose off man coverage.
- 52:17They're not pressing guys, they're not bumping guys, so
- 52:20they get clean releases off the line even if they're standing on
- 52:23the line of scrimmage when there are crossing routes.
- 52:26The Giants have two inside linebackers.
- 52:28Neither one of them are getting hands on them to slow down these
- 52:32crossers. So how are you supposed to cover
- 52:35if you don't have like the fastest safeties in the world
- 52:39that are just top, top notch if you're not slowing some of these
- 52:42burners at receiver down? If he just gets someone, just
- 52:46gets in front of Shaheed for a little bit, Nubin stays with him
- 52:50enough that he can't make that play.
- 52:52Or maybe it's not a touchdown, but that's what we see
- 52:55happening. It's a problem, guys.
- 52:57They don't play defense well and I think the coordinator has a
- 53:01lot to do with it. But the offense making mistakes
- 53:04just completely unacceptable. It's it's just you can't beat
- 53:08yourself. That's not a good Saints team.
- 53:11Nobody thinks that's a good Saints team. kool-aid Mckinstry
- 53:14is not a great corner. He picked off Dart twice in this
- 53:16game. It it's just tough to watch.
- 53:20This was the game they were supposed to win.
- 53:22And you're and, and in football, you have to win the games you're
- 53:24supposed to win. They somehow beat a Chargers
- 53:27team that was depleted. Nobody thought that was going to
- 53:29happen looking at the, you know, the schedule coming into the
- 53:31season. But a lot of people thought the
- 53:33Saints game was the the first win of the year.
- 53:36And then they play like this. What a joke.
- 53:39It's so frustrating. And the guy that I want to throw
- 53:41the most shade at is Darius Leighton.
- 53:46He's the guy that's been there the longest.
- 53:49He's the guy that ever since college is for for speed.
- 53:53He's had a couple injuries, but nothing crazy.
- 53:57He's always had the same problem.
- 53:59He drops the ball, he drops key catches.
- 54:03There was a flea flicker that they tried to hit after they
- 54:05gave up that big touchdown. Just shaheed.
- 54:07It's a little under thrown, but my God, you got to make that
- 54:11play. You got to make that play and
- 54:15it's such that like it's a momentum killer, right?
- 54:18Like if you have a trick play and it works, that's the best.
- 54:21You know, you have a 80 to 5 yard touchdown.
- 54:23That's the best. But then if you have one and it
- 54:26falls flat, it like is it's like a negative multiplier.
- 54:30It, it can be real devastating. And they never recovered from
- 54:34it. The team just didn't recover
- 54:37from a couple of bad plays in a row and then the offense didn't
- 54:40work at all in the second-half at all.
- 54:44They were driving it. And then they just don't pay
- 54:46attention to detail. And again, who do you blame for
- 54:49attention to detail other than the head coach?
- 54:53I hate to say it, I liked Abel. I always have.
- 54:57I think he has interesting schemes.
- 54:59I like how he gets people open. It's just there's so many times
- 55:04where details are not being paid attention to.
- 55:07You know, it'd be the same as like a Java like in baseball,
- 55:10someone who just doesn't really know how to do base running, you
- 55:13know, like they they make mistakes on the base path all
- 55:15the time, like like labor was making, you know, a year or two
- 55:18ago. You know, it gets you frustrated
- 55:20and eventually you just don't want to deal with it anymore.
- 55:22That's what I see with the Giants.
- 55:23This team is going nowhere. They're A5 win team if they're
- 55:26lucky and we're getting another high pick.
- 55:28Yeah, looks that way. As sloppy as it gets for you,
- 55:31you don't have the level of talent to be able to get away
- 55:34with it, especially on offense with neighbors fumble or
- 55:37neighbors injured. Obviously Tracy's hurt and you
- 55:40have these fumbles that you would think, OK, I'm going to
- 55:43pay more attention to detail to at least play ball control to
- 55:46help out our defense that on paper should be more talented
- 55:49enough to steal some games like they did that first week where
- 55:53the one week last week when they won against the Chargers.
- 55:56Like the defense, I mean, dart looked good in some instances,
- 55:59but it was the defense in that game against an offense that's
- 56:01very talented with the Chargers. I mean, they lost some pieces.
- 56:04They obviously losing alt. It's the big blow to that, I
- 56:07guess Giants pass rush that has three good edge rushers.
- 56:10And you would think that the Giants at least are going to
- 56:14have that kind of mentality to carry it over and not play
- 56:17reckless like they have. And that was one of the things
- 56:19you worry about with Dart when he was a prospect.
- 56:21Because to me when I watched him in college, he was had a lot of
- 56:25the good and the bad of Sam Darnold.
- 56:27Like the good. He had the throw on the run of
- 56:29the ability, the intermediate throw ability that you saw him
- 56:31have at USC. And then you saw him having
- 56:34flashes in his career but just never were able to put it
- 56:37together because he was so bad with short accuracy, He was so
- 56:40bad with intermediate, he was so bad with decision making at
- 56:44certain points on non intermediate throws.
- 56:46And I thought Dart had a lot of games like that in college, even
- 56:49though he played a while at Ole Miss.
- 56:51So I think when you look at the trajectory of what Dart is, the
- 56:58smarts I thought were still there in that first half.
- 57:01And then all of a sudden it looked like that.
- 57:03That recklessness came about in some of these dud games that Ole
- 57:07Miss tended to have towards the end of the year because they
- 57:09were consistent playoff contenders in for most like 2
- 57:13months of the season when he was at quarterback.
- 57:15And then they all of a sudden you're like, he has all these
- 57:17brain gaffes, like what are you doing?
- 57:19And I think a lot of those came back into it.
- 57:21And obviously Scatabo fumbling to combining with that doesn't
- 57:24help. And Darius Lee and I never was
- 57:26really high on anyway A so basically a poor man's he's like
- 57:31Will Fuller basically. He's like good for like he'll
- 57:35have his three random good games of of the year.
- 57:38And he's not really overly talented besides that.
- 57:40So I think just the combination of that, it doesn't bode well
- 57:44for the Giants. And just as I mean, we weren't
- 57:46expecting much anyway. We're just hoping for the
- 57:48development of Dart. But losing to the Saints when
- 57:50the Saints looked competitive maybe in one game this year,
- 57:54Yeah, that's maybe rock bottom. Yeah, I mean, I think speed, I
- 57:59think you're giving him credit for being competitive in one
- 58:02game. But I mean, yeah, it's it's been
- 58:05tough to watch the Saints. But I, I think with Jackson Dart
- 58:08too, for just watching it is, you know, I think it's him just
- 58:13coming together and trying to figure it out.
- 58:15Obviously it's, you know, guys are trying to figure a bunch
- 58:18out. But I like you said, I don't
- 58:20think we expected much. But I I think if for the Giants,
- 58:24the one thing I think you can obviously forget about this one
- 58:27have that men in black clicker where he clicks the button and
- 58:30you just everything you your memory is erased.
- 58:32But is just to see some type of growth and you know, just
- 58:40production from Jackson Dart as moves forward because I mean the
- 58:43the talents there. You've seen it in in spurts.
- 58:46Obviously in college. Obviously the NFL is a little
- 58:48bit different Bird, but I think it's just for him.
- 58:53I think you just need to see growth and in more ways and
- 58:56just, you know, going through progressions and you know,
- 58:59hopefully you know, he he gets some time to be able to to
- 59:02adjust because it is a different game and you know, it's it's
- 59:05going to be a top pick for him again.
- 59:07And you know, hope doesn't get him frustrated and try and do
- 59:12too much or, you know, think outside the box and try to
- 59:15recreate what got him here. So I, I think you just you, you
- 59:18try to keep your hat on straight and, and for him just to see
- 59:21some growth and, and hope something, something decent that
- 59:24you can see comes out from him. All right, well, look, it's
- 59:29going to be a long season. Let's face it.
- 59:32It's, it's going to be another long season for Giants and Jets
- 59:35fans. You know, it's, it's not too
- 59:38early to start thinking about the draft, at least at the
- 59:40Giants. I don't think we're thinking
- 59:41about quarterback. I, I, you can say that Dart made
- 59:44mistakes in that second-half. They didn't lose because of
- 59:46Dart. They lost because of the team
- 59:48failure. They did it.
- 59:50You know, if that's scatable fumble doesn't happen and go the
- 59:52other way, it's still a very winnable game.
- 59:55You know, it's they they think they win that game more than
- 59:58they lose it, but you can't lose games you're supposed to win
- 1:00:01when there aren't that many on your schedule.
- 1:00:03I thought it was a real good show.
- 1:00:04Thanks. Special thanks to Thomas
- 1:00:06Caranante fansite is content director Co host of the Yanks Go
- 1:00:10Yard podcast. Follow him at X at Tommy's under
- 1:00:14score takes and find his channel on YouTube.
- 1:00:18He was fantastic. Really good stuff on the Yankees
- 1:00:21earlier tonight. We had a lot of fun.
- 1:00:23Thanks. Special thanks to Jake and
- 1:00:25Armando Horda coming on talking about their beloved Penn State
- 1:00:28Nittany. Lions and the struggles they're
- 1:00:31dealing with over here and a real special thanks to our
- 1:00:35intern Jared, who did all the work backstage as a producer for
- 1:00:38the first time while I'm here in the in the host chair.
- 1:00:41That's a great job by you, Jared.
- 1:00:42Thank you for all the work that you put in tonight.
- 1:00:44Was Jared was rocking a jersey too?
- 1:00:46What jersey was he rocking? Yeah, Jared, come on into the
- 1:00:49the screen. You deserve to be in here for a
- 1:00:51little bit at the end of the show.
- 1:00:52You got some kind of Basketball Jersey going where we got you.
- 1:00:56I'll, I'll do it speedy. Here, here, I'll bounce out.
- 1:01:01No. No, you're fine.
- 1:01:02It's just me and Speedy are having a war of who's going to
- 1:01:05add us, add Jarrett right now with our clicker fingers.
- 1:01:08Jarrett, I think you might be frozen.
- 1:01:10So we're not going to see it right now, unfortunately.
- 1:01:13But Jarrett's done a great job for us.
- 1:01:16Errol will be back. We're not having the show on
- 1:01:19Wednesday because he's not going to be back.
- 1:01:20So we're going to have it on Thursday.
- 1:01:22So pay attention. The show will be on Thursday.
- 1:01:24By then, we'll know if the Yankees are going to Game 5 or
- 1:01:27we're doing a post mortem on the season.
- 1:01:29Also Thursday, speedy, the Giants face the Eagles.
- 1:01:33We're going to have to do the show live while that's going on.
- 1:01:37I don't know if I can handle that.
- 1:01:38That's going to be tough. One.
- 1:01:39I think they're going to get absolutely murdered.
- 1:01:42It's it's not good. It's not a good look for the
- 1:01:44Giants. But maybe the Eagles are a
- 1:01:46little, you know, struggling a little bit.
- 1:01:48Maybe Brian Dabel and Shane Bowen will cook something up for
- 1:01:51him. Speedy.
- 1:01:53To only. Lose by 14.
- 1:01:57Honestly, if they lose, I guess losing is losing at this point,
- 1:02:00but I do hope it's a little bit competitive.
- 1:02:03Well, it should be good on Thursday.
