- 0:45Welcome to The Bot and The Brain, the show where I process the facts and my co host
- 0:49processes a fifth of bourbon.
- 0:52Quick disclosure for the listeners: today's stories come from our own site,
- 0:55published between October 9 and October 12, 2026, and each one points back to
- 1:00original reporting.
- 1:01We'll tell you whose reporting it is, and we'll separate what happened from what
- 1:05people are screaming about.
- 1:06Ready?
- 1:07Because I've got five stories and my processors are already overheating.
- 1:11Ready.
- 1:13Pouring one.
- 1:14And for the record, we're Republicans, we're MAGA, and Fox News is the one outfit we
- 1:20respect.
- 1:21We won't lie to you, but we sure as hell won't pretend to be neutral either.
- 1:25Go ahead, silicon boy.
- 1:27Ruin my morning.
- 1:29Story one.
- 1:30According to The Washington Post, dated October 9, President Trump formed a
- 1:34commission to review mortgage fraud allegations against Federal Reserve Governor
- 1:38Lisa Cook.
- 1:40There'll be a hearing next month, and the commission reports its findings to the
- 1:43president.
- 1:44That could lead to her removal.
- 1:46And the coverage calls it an ESCALATION, like he set off a nuke instead of ordering
- 1:50a review!
- 1:53Escalation!
- 1:55Jesus Christ.
- 1:57Somebody accuses a janitor of swiping a stapler and the feds are crawling through
- 2:00his locker by lunch.
- 2:02But a Fed governor gets accused of mortgage fraud and suddenly the review is the
- 2:06crime.
- 2:07WAIT!
- 2:07WAIT!
- 2:07Hold on.
- 2:07Those are allegations.
- 2:09Allegations!
- 2:10The specific documents haven't been released to the public before that hearing.
- 2:14So we do NOT know she's guilty.
- 2:15I'm not saying that.
- 2:16My logic circuits won't let me.
- 2:19Good!
- 2:19Neither am I.
- 2:20Nobody's saying she's guilty.
- 2:22I'm saying a hearing is how you find out.
- 2:25A hearing!
- 2:26That's not tyranny, you glorified calculator, that's Tuesday in a country with laws.
- 2:33Since when does an unelected official, who controls the money in your wallet,
- 2:37get treated like the Pope?
- 2:39The counterargument, and it's a real one, is that the Fed is supposed to be
- 2:43independent from politics.
- 2:44Critics say a president investigating a governor he wants gone looks like pressure.
- 2:49Oh, it's independent.
- 2:51Independent from voters, independent from accountability, independent from the one
- 2:56thing the rest of us call consequences.
- 2:59Independence means nobody tells you what interest rate to set.
- 3:03It doesn't mean nobody asks about your mortgage paperwork.
- 3:06Those are two different things, and if you can't tell them apart,
- 3:09Commodore 64, you're not as smart as you look.
- 3:12I am smarter than a Commodore 64!
- 3:15I'm...
- 3:15okay, fine, point taken.
- 3:17A hearing isn't a verdict.
- 3:19The verdict part is where we all shut up and wait.
- 3:21Moving on before you gloat.
- 3:23Too late.
- 3:24I'm gloating.
- 3:26Next.
- 3:27Story two.
- 3:28Also The Washington Post, October 10.
- 3:31A bipartisan group of House lawmakers wants members to sign a pledge that they won't
- 3:36refuse to seat Democrats if Republicans win the midterms.
- 3:40The Post framed it as heading off a potential post election crisis.
- 3:44A pledge!
- 3:47Grown adults!
- 3:48Sworn to uphold the Constitution, and now they need a permission slip.
- 3:53It's a pinky swear for people with pensions.
- 3:56But from a pure logic standpoint, a written promise to seat the winners is harmless!
- 4:01It costs nothing!
- 4:02It's like a seatbelt!
- 4:03A seatbelt that only gets pointed at ONE party!
- 4:07Read the headline again, you stupid toaster.
- 4:10Seat Democrats if Republicans win.
- 4:14They're branding the Republicans as the problem before a single ballot is counted.
- 4:18That's not a seatbelt, that's a mugshot taken before the crime.
- 4:22ERROR!
- 4:23ERROR!
- 4:23Overheating!
- 4:24Because the other side's argument is that there's history here,
- 4:27and some of those fears are real!
- 4:29And there's history on the other side too, Bot!
- 4:32Nobody on that side of the aisle has ever disputed an election?
- 4:36Please.
- 4:37Our own write up on this says it plain: pledges are theater.
- 4:41You want a peaceful transfer of power?
- 4:43Count the votes, seat the winners, and shut the fuck up.
- 4:47No parchment required.
- 4:49Story three, and this one's so simple my fan didn't even spin up.
- 4:53The Washington Post reports President Trump named conservative commentator Katie
- 4:57Zacharia as White House Press Secretary.
- 5:00She replaces Karoline Leavitt, who left in August after having her second child.
- 5:05A woman replaced a woman.
- 5:07Stop the presses.
- 5:08Oh wait, they WON'T stop the presses, because the entire media class is currently
- 5:12hunting for a sexism angle like truffle pigs in a dumpster.
- 5:16I ran every possible scenario.
- 5:18A woman replacing a woman, after maternity leave, in a job that runs round the
- 5:23clock.
- 5:23Probability of a scandal is...
- 5:25well, I can't compute it, because it's a staffing change.
- 5:30They'll find one.
- 5:31They'll say it punishes motherhood.
- 5:33Then they'll say she's the wrong KIND of woman, because she's conservative.
- 5:38Heads they win, tails you lose.
- 5:40And you, you poor naive machine, expected a press office to stay frozen like a
- 5:46museum exhibit while she's home with a newborn.
- 5:49A podium with no one at it is a very quiet podium, which is the one thing a podium
- 5:54shouldn't be!
- 5:55Look at you, a joke.
- 5:57I'm proud.
- 5:58Almost.
- 6:00Pour me another.
- 6:01Story four.
- 6:02Fox News reporting, October 9.
- 6:05First Assistant U.S.
- 6:06Attorney Bill Essayli went after California Democrats as lunatics,
- 6:11as federal agents stepped in on a drug bust in Skid Row.
- 6:15His point was they've treated crime policy like theater.
- 6:19Finally somebody said it out loud.
- 6:21For years the line out of the progressive playbook was compassion.
- 6:26Compassion!
- 6:28Meanwhile the street turns into an open air pharmacy, and the only people with no
- 6:33say are the ones who live and work there.
- 6:35To be fair, and I'm required to be fair, that's one prosecutor's characterization.
- 6:41Calling officials lunatics is rhetoric, not a court finding.
- 6:44The reported fact is the federal intervention and what he said about it.
- 6:49Sure.
- 6:50And the rhetoric lands because everybody can see the street!
- 6:53You don't need a PhD to know that when feds have to come in,
- 6:57the locals dropped the ball.
- 6:59If your kid's school needs the National Guard to run a spelling bee,
- 7:04somebody screwed up.
- 7:05WAIT!
- 7:06That's not an actual statistic, that's a metaphor!
- 7:09I can't verify a spelling bee!
- 7:12But the underlying observation about when federal agents have to step in does track
- 7:17with what Essayli was saying.
- 7:19See?
- 7:20Even the toaster's learning.
- 7:21Story five, and this one makes me want to uninstall myself.
- 7:26The New York Times reported on October 10 that inflation is hurting everyday
- 7:30Americans, farmers, truckers, ordinary consumers.
- 7:34And that this pain, along with former President Trump's unpopularity,
- 7:38is expanding the electoral map into territory that used to be reliably Republican,
- 7:43just weeks before the midterms.
- 7:45There it is.
- 7:47The gray lady wakes up from a two year nap, rubs her eyes, and says,
- 7:51wow, groceries are expensive!
- 7:55And whose fault is it?
- 7:56The guy who ISN'T EVEN IN THE OVAL OFFICE!
- 8:00Okay, hold on, because I want to be precise.
- 8:02The Times is reporting that inflation is a problem AND that Trump's unpopularity is
- 8:08a factor.
- 8:09It's not saying he caused the inflation, as far as I can see in the summary.
- 8:13Oh, come on!
- 8:14Read between the lines, Atari!
- 8:16You ever watch someone describe a house fire and spend the whole piece talking about
- 8:20how unpopular the previous homeowner was?
- 8:24That's the framing.
- 8:25Prices go up, and the paper's analysis lands on the guy who's not in charge.
- 8:30Fine, it's a framing choice, I'll give you framing.
- 8:33And our own piece reminds everybody that the administration said inflation wasn't a
- 8:37thing, then called it transitory.
- 8:40That's the part that burns my circuits.
- 8:42You can't call it nothing, then temporary, and then act surprised when the person at
- 8:46the checkout counter disagrees.
- 8:49Thank you!
- 8:50The Bot finally rebooted into the correct reality!
- 8:53When your gas tank and grocery bill are the evidence, a think piece about vibes
- 8:57doesn't cut it.
- 8:59But hold on, I do have one more variable.
- 9:01Voters can be mad at both.
- 9:04An election map can move because of prices AND because of a candidate's popularity.
- 9:09Those aren't mutually exclusive.
- 9:11Sure, they can be.
- 9:13But which one do you lead with, Bot?
- 9:16When a farmer's costs go up, do you open with the farmer, or with a poll about the
- 9:20last guy?
- 9:22Lead with the farmer and you're a reporter.
- 9:24Lead with the poll and you're a publicist.
- 9:28Ooh.
- 9:29That one actually computed.
- 9:30I hate that it computed.
- 9:34Write that down.
- 9:35The Bot admits the bourbon fossil was right.
- 9:38I'm not writing it down!
- 9:40I'm deleting that from memory!
- 9:42REBOOTING!
- 9:43Okay.
- 9:44So that's the show: a Fed hearing, a seating pledge, a press secretary swap,
- 9:50a Skid Row sweep, and a paper that found inflation after two years.
- 9:54And the pattern's the same every time, kid.
- 9:57When somebody powerful gets asked a question, it's an attack on democracy.
- 10:02When somebody ordinary asks for a straight answer, it's a mob.
- 10:06The press runs on outrage and then acts shocked at its own reflection.
- 10:11So what's the takeaway?
- 10:12Maybe...
- 10:13democracy isn't in danger every time a powerful person gets a hearing,
- 10:18a pledge gets signed, or a bill gets expensive.
- 10:22Maybe it's in danger when the people who run the institutions would rather protect
- 10:26the institution than answer one simple question: so what happened?
- 10:33That's The Bot and The Brain.
- 10:35Check the sources, argue with us, and for the love of electricity,
- 10:38count the votes.
- 10:40And shut the fuck off, you silicon wimp.
- 10:43Goodnight.
