- 0:00Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimmeol filling
- 0:03Speaker 1: in for one Craig Way as Craig is in Brooklyn,
- 0:07Speaker 1: New York. Brooklyn would go hard. Craig Way joins the show. Now,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Craig Texas men's basketball went hard yesterday a big win
- 0:14Speaker 1: against Syracuse.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and got out for the big lead. They were
- 0:19Speaker 2: up sixteen in the first half and early in the
- 0:21Speaker 2: second half and missed some shots. Syracuse got hot, came
- 0:25Speaker 2: all the way back, actually took their first lead, even
- 0:29Speaker 2: the team in a second anthet a couple of one
- 0:31Speaker 2: point leads, and then the Longrns did what they had
- 0:33Speaker 2: to do. They closed out down the stretch. And for
- 0:36Speaker 2: a freshman like Trey Johnson, who it looked like it
- 0:40Speaker 2: was coming so easy to him before this game last night,
- 0:43Speaker 2: it was really struggling from the field. He was super
- 0:47Speaker 2: touchdown the stretch, made six out of six free throws
- 0:50Speaker 2: from the foul line. That to go with Arthur Kluma's
- 0:55Speaker 2: double double, his second as a long Worn and they
- 0:57Speaker 2: did a good job to be able to pull away,
- 0:59Speaker 2: to eat a way to get that win. Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 1: No, the trade Johnson storyline this year. Craig is something
- 1:04Speaker 1: that everybody's gonna want to talk about all year long.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And the fact that the lights were bright. He struggled early,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but to come back the way that they did, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: for him to come back mentally, to take that deep
- 1:16Speaker 1: breath and hit those free throws, that is huge. That
- 1:18Speaker 1: tells me a lot about the type of player he's
- 1:20Speaker 1: going to be.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't let the fact that he was missing
- 1:25Speaker 2: shots affect him on the defensive end, which is a
- 1:27Speaker 2: pretty common occurrence, especially with freshman But as we were
- 1:30Speaker 2: talking about yesterday, he really likes to guard people and
- 1:34Speaker 2: he worked really hard on the defensive side. And then
- 1:38Speaker 2: you could tell Syracuse wanted to foul him. He had
- 1:41Speaker 2: missed one free throw in the first app but only one.
- 1:43Speaker 2: He just missed a lot of shots from the field,
- 1:45Speaker 2: and you could tell they really wanted to foul him.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And as Rodney Kerry told us on the post game,
- 1:50Speaker 2: he said, we were fine with that, and sure enough
- 1:52Speaker 2: they got the ball in his hand and then he
- 1:54Speaker 2: made all six free throws down the stretch, So they've
- 1:57Speaker 2: got plenty of confidence him and Rodney even said at
- 1:59Speaker 2: the post game, I'll look for Trey to have a
- 2:02Speaker 2: big game tomorrow. Night he said that would a laugh.
- 2:04Speaker 2: So we'll see. But I think it also shows that
- 2:07Speaker 2: they could, excuse me, get plenty of contributions from players
- 2:13Speaker 2: not named Trey Johnson win Trey struggles from the corps.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mentioned Klumba's double double. Kendall Weaver had ten points,
- 2:21Speaker 2: nine of those in the second half and added nine rebounds.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Pretty good for a guard he can elevate. Yeah, so
- 2:28Speaker 2: I think that was important. Kayton Shedrick had some moments,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Derek Onyema off the bench, so they got They got
- 2:34Speaker 2: several guys to chip in and they're gonna need that
- 2:36Speaker 2: throughout the course of the season.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Let's talk about Mark. He got his first bucket. We
- 2:40Speaker 1: played the call earlier in the show Crag. We knew
- 2:43Speaker 1: it was kind of a game time decision, but man,
- 2:45Speaker 1: it was good to see him out there get those
- 2:47Speaker 1: nineteen minutes.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, Tremon Mark get two threes early
- 2:54Speaker 2: in the game and then not as much after. But
- 2:56Speaker 2: I think also Robby was looking at different commindations trying
- 3:01Speaker 2: to make sure that they didn't, you know, grind him
- 3:05Speaker 2: too much coming off that ankle injury. But he came
- 3:08Speaker 2: out of it well. I think we'll see him play
- 3:10Speaker 2: probably some more minutes tonight and and some of this also,
- 3:14Speaker 2: Andrew's going to depend on foul difficulty with guys, you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: as arik on Yama got ten first half minutes, which
- 3:19Speaker 2: is not real common for him. He got that because
- 3:22Speaker 2: of the two early fouls on Cayden Shedrick, and he
- 3:25Speaker 2: got pretty worn down there late in the first half.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Mark will have some time again coming off the bench.
- 3:31Speaker 2: They like the big freshman Jamie Benson. Gives him a
- 3:34Speaker 2: few minutes as well. Even Nick Cody got his first
- 3:36Speaker 2: action out there for a few minutes on the floor.
- 3:38Speaker 2: They want to get some more with him against this
- 3:41Speaker 2: Saint Joe's team. They're going to be playing the team
- 3:43Speaker 2: that has a couple of big guys in their center.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Justice Ajibor, who's who's the center, he's six ten, and
- 3:52Speaker 2: Rasher Fleming is a six ' nine forward who loves
- 3:55Speaker 2: to shoot three pointer. He shoots forty five percent beyond
- 3:58Speaker 2: the arc. So they have to match with those guys
- 4:00Speaker 2: as well as what the guards want to do for
- 4:02Speaker 2: the heart.
- 4:02Speaker 1: It's almost like you do this for a living, because
- 4:04Speaker 1: you beat me to my segue. Craig I was going
- 4:06Speaker 1: to start talking about tonight's game, I will say, to
- 4:09Speaker 1: eight guys in double figure minutes or eight guys in
- 4:12Speaker 1: double figure points, which one's more impressive to you? Now,
- 4:16Speaker 1: that didn't happen last night, But what would you prefer
- 4:18Speaker 1: to see? Eight guys who can contribute big minutes or
- 4:20Speaker 1: eight guys that are contributing points?
- 4:23Speaker 2: You mean protectas. Yes, well, you'll take the points anytime
- 4:28Speaker 2: you can get them, for sure, But I do think
- 4:30Speaker 2: it speaks to the depth of the team when you
- 4:33Speaker 2: can have that. So especially Andrew, when you got the
- 4:37Speaker 2: back to back. This is their first back to back
- 4:39Speaker 2: of the season. And of course, obviously when you get
- 4:42Speaker 2: in the tournament play, you have to deal with that.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Here's an interesting fact. The Long Words have not won
- 4:49Speaker 2: an n season tournament since the pandemic twenty twenty when
- 4:55Speaker 2: they were in the Malli Invitational. But if you looked around,
- 4:57Speaker 2: it didn't look much like now. He was in Ashville,
- 4:59Speaker 2: North Carolina during the pandemic and Texas won the ball
- 5:04Speaker 2: game to be days in Indiana and North Carolina to
- 5:07Speaker 2: win that event. And they're going back to the MALLI
- 5:09Speaker 2: next year, really and truly going to Bali this time
- 5:12Speaker 2: next year. But they that's the last time they won
- 5:16Speaker 2: an end season tournament, so they have a chance to
- 5:18Speaker 2: do that tonight.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I was going to say, that's almost like if I
- 5:20Speaker 1: had like the Paris Invitational in Paris, Texas, Craig, It's
- 5:25Speaker 1: it's not Maui, but it's the next best thing. It's
- 5:27Speaker 1: North Carolina.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not bad and Asheel's beautiful and hopefully they
- 5:32Speaker 2: recover with a horrific flooding that happened a hurricane and
- 5:36Speaker 2: they're still rebuilding up there. But that's a wonderful town.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It kind of it would remind you of Austin about
- 5:43Speaker 2: twenty thirty years ago. It has kind of tucked away
- 5:46Speaker 2: in the mountains. It's a beautiful city. Hopefully they can
- 5:48Speaker 2: get that thing back on track now.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Funny enough, and maybe I'm wrong here, but it says
- 5:53Speaker 1: the last time that Texas and Saint Joseph's played was
- 5:57Speaker 1: in the Mallai in two thousand and eight.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Does that sound about right to you?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yep, yep it was. And just like then, last night,
- 6:06Speaker 2: I sat next to Joey Brackets himself, Joe Lenardi, the
- 6:10Speaker 2: man who does the bracketology for ESPN. He is the
- 6:14Speaker 2: radio analyst for Saint Joe's and we were sitting inside
- 6:18Speaker 2: one another last night while the game was going on,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and you know, while he was, you know, watching our game.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And then and then I was there for the first
- 6:28Speaker 2: half of their game against Texas Tech. And that game,
- 6:31Speaker 2: by the way, Andrew, was a lot like the Texas game.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Saint Joe's got out to the afore mentioned sixteen point
- 6:38Speaker 2: first half lead, had it sixteen early in the second half,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then hit a dry spell. Tech got hot, came back,
- 6:46Speaker 2: actually took a one point lead, and then Saint Joe's
- 6:50Speaker 2: made some key buckets down the stretch and Tech missed
- 6:52Speaker 2: a pretty short range jumper that would have won it
- 6:55Speaker 2: for him. So there will be no Texas versus Texas
- 6:58Speaker 2: Tech games since the Red Raiders that didn't come up
- 7:02Speaker 2: with a win. So it's going to be Texas against
- 7:04Speaker 2: Saint Joe's. But yes, you're right, it'll be the first
- 7:07Speaker 2: time in sixteen years that they will have met. The
- 7:10Speaker 2: last time was in the two thousand and eight nowI Invitational.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Andrews will filling on the Craig Way Show. Craig Way
- 7:15Speaker 1: his name on the Z on the show on the
- 7:17Speaker 1: phone with us Craig I was talking about this game
- 7:21Speaker 1: yesterday with you. I was saying, I really hope that
- 7:23Speaker 1: it was going to be Tech versus Texas. Do I
- 7:25Speaker 1: need to put more respect on Saint Joseph's name? Is
- 7:28Speaker 1: that what this comes down to that I wasn't familiar
- 7:30Speaker 1: with how good they are.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Well they're good, and you know that's what's called Big
- 7:37Speaker 2: Five Basketball, the five schools there in Philadelphia, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 2: with Penn and LaSalle and Villanova, you know, Direcchoel's in there.
- 7:46Speaker 2: They've got They've got several good teams and programs there
- 7:51Speaker 2: in the city of Philadelphia, and a lot of times
- 7:53Speaker 2: they'll play at the Palester and have the big crowds there.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So it's a cool deal. And St. Joseph's had some
- 8:00Speaker 2: really good teams in the past. Of course, we all
- 8:04Speaker 2: know Jamiir and Nelson who played the NBA all those years.
- 8:07Speaker 2: He was the point guard for that great Saint Josephine
- 8:10Speaker 2: that Phil Martelly had that got to the Elite ate
- 8:13Speaker 2: a few years ago. So you know, it's one of
- 8:16Speaker 2: those tradition leaden basketball programs. And it's still early days,
- 8:21Speaker 2: early in the season. I think teams are still trying
- 8:23Speaker 2: to find their way. Listen, the Walk Warns are still playing.
- 8:25Speaker 2: There are three men down right now, and they've got
- 8:27Speaker 2: three guys who have not been able to go because
- 8:31Speaker 2: because of injury as a result that happened in the
- 8:35Speaker 2: fact that they were unable to get Jason Kennell on
- 8:38Speaker 2: the floor. He injured a risk in last Saturday's win
- 8:41Speaker 2: over Mississippi Valley State. They're still trying to bring Nick
- 8:43Speaker 2: Cody along Malik Presley, the kid from San Marcus that
- 8:48Speaker 2: transferre him from Vantal. They've got guys banged up right now,
- 8:51Speaker 2: and I think some teams are going through some of
- 8:54Speaker 2: that as well across the country.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Eight pm.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Pregame right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone
- 9:03Speaker 1: and on the Long Warn Radio network as well. All Right, Craig,
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's a game that we have certing on the calendar
- 9:07Speaker 1: for the Saturday. It's Kentucky versus Texas. I want to
- 9:10Speaker 1: talk about you though the next twenty four hours for
- 9:12Speaker 1: you got to be kind of a world win, right,
- 9:14Speaker 1: call this game and come back do the Long Warn game.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, one of those you get on the
- 9:24Speaker 2: plane and you come home, you know that kind of
- 9:26Speaker 2: thing I was referring to you know, kind of blocking
- 9:29Speaker 2: out the fact you get a little tired coming in.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to being in the stadium tomorrow to
- 9:33Speaker 2: call them the game Senior Day. There'll be a lot
- 9:36Speaker 2: of seniors and some who aren't necessarily seniors academically, but
- 9:41Speaker 2: who may be playing their final game as Texas. Long words, anyway,
- 9:44Speaker 2: it's a special day for them, and and sarc has
- 9:48Speaker 2: talked about that this week. He got a little emotional
- 9:50Speaker 2: during the week with the team. He plans to be
- 9:55Speaker 2: You're gonna try, You're gonna try to be a little
- 9:57Speaker 2: bit more stoic tomorrow when those guys come out. He
- 10:00Speaker 2: wants his guys to enjoy the moment. This is a
- 10:02Speaker 2: real interesting dynamic allways. And I remember talking about it
- 10:06Speaker 2: with Mac Brown and other coaches that you want the
- 10:10Speaker 2: guys to appreciate the moment. You also don't want it
- 10:15Speaker 2: to consume them emotionally to the point that they can't
- 10:18Speaker 2: function on the field, because the end result of this
- 10:22Speaker 2: is the bottom line, and Stark mentioned this on the
- 10:24Speaker 2: Zoom yesterday, is the best way they can honor the underclassmen,
- 10:29Speaker 2: can honor the seniors is for them to play well
- 10:31Speaker 2: and for the seniors to play well and for them
- 10:33Speaker 2: to win, to have a big day because as we know,
- 10:37Speaker 2: they need to keep winning. They really I think need
- 10:41Speaker 2: to win the next two games to lock themselves into
- 10:46Speaker 2: a playoff spot. Then you take your chances in Atlanta,
- 10:49Speaker 2: try to win an SEC championship, and if you do that,
- 10:52Speaker 2: you get a first round by for the playoffs. So
- 10:54Speaker 2: there's you know, there's goals still out there. The stated
- 10:57Speaker 2: goal of this team from the starts to win the
- 11:01Speaker 2: SEC Championship, and that goal is still in front of them.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Which you got to admit high bar for year one
- 11:06Speaker 1: of the SEC that they might clear, which is absolutely incredible.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:11Speaker 1: We do a lot of predictions on sports talk radio.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'm not going to ask you to make a prediction here, Craig,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I will ask you to do this. What is your
- 11:18Speaker 1: favorite Senior Day memory from calling these games? What do
- 11:21Speaker 1: you remember the most?
- 11:24Speaker 2: I just remember, you know, there there were days there
- 11:28Speaker 2: were games when see we didn't know, you know, five
- 11:31Speaker 2: that it was going to be Vin Chunks final light
- 11:33Speaker 2: and so he didn't actually even go through senior Day,
- 11:37Speaker 2: uh you know, uh celebration and all that sort. So
- 11:40Speaker 2: we did know that was going to be the case.
- 11:42Speaker 2: For col McCoy in two thousand and nine, and I
- 11:44Speaker 2: think about that and that was a big day for him.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But again then as in as now, the way that
- 11:54Speaker 2: it was set up, Andrew, is you had to keep
- 11:56Speaker 2: winning the long warns knew uh that in the BC
- 12:00Speaker 2: what they were going to have to do is win
- 12:02Speaker 2: the game over Texas A and M, which they did,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and then they were going to have to win the
- 12:08Speaker 2: Big Golf Championship, which they did by the narrowest of margins.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You know when they when they barely beat Nebraska, but
- 12:14Speaker 2: they beat them to get to the National Championship game.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It's the same thing with this group. They know that
- 12:19Speaker 2: they know what's in front of them, and yeah, it'll
- 12:22Speaker 2: be a special day, but you know they they know
- 12:26Speaker 2: what they have to do to take their business. And
- 12:28Speaker 2: you didn't ask me this, Andrew, but I'm going to
- 12:30Speaker 2: tell you anyway, if you're asking me, I'd rather have
- 12:34Speaker 2: the buy.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's perfect, Okay, I agree.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'd rather Yeah, I would. And you know why, it's
- 12:43Speaker 2: one less game you have to win. Listen, whoever they
- 12:47Speaker 2: if there's a couple of things in play here, when
- 12:52Speaker 2: when they're when people who are examining this, saying, hey, look,
- 12:56Speaker 2: you know you can play you know, go ahead and
- 12:59Speaker 2: get in a rhythm and you play that matchup, and
- 13:02Speaker 2: then you're going, well, that game is no guarantee even
- 13:04Speaker 2: if you're the five seed. Remember, the five seed is
- 13:08Speaker 2: going to play the twelve seed, and you have no
- 13:11Speaker 2: control over whether you're a going to be the five
- 13:13Speaker 2: seed because automatic conference champions could knock you down below that,
- 13:18Speaker 2: making it a more difficult first round matchup. So there's that,
- 13:24Speaker 2: and then and then you don't know who that twelve
- 13:26Speaker 2: is going to be. I mean, does anybody want play
- 13:28Speaker 2: Boys State right now? I don't know. It looks pretty
- 13:31Speaker 2: good against Oregon, so that it's one less game you
- 13:35Speaker 2: have to win, okay, because then he you know, I
- 13:39Speaker 2: know they was talking about getting into a rhythm and
- 13:41Speaker 2: all that, but it's another four week grind. So that's right.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And I was all for a playoff expansion. I'm for
- 13:49Speaker 2: expanding at the sixteen. I'm all of that. You know,
- 13:51Speaker 2: the high school kids play sixteen games andrew in the
- 13:55Speaker 2: state of Texas to win a state title, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 2: so you can do that.
- 14:00Speaker 1: High school kids aren't facing Georgia, then A and M
- 14:03Speaker 1: and then Alburn and Alabama and LSU, and then having
- 14:07Speaker 1: to go play the best teams in the country after that.
- 14:10Speaker 3: That's why I don't want to expand it.
- 14:11Speaker 2: They also don't have They also don't have two or
- 14:13Speaker 2: three buys during the course of the season two, So
- 14:17Speaker 2: I mean you have to look at it from all angle.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Same thing with the FCS playoffs. FCS college guys, they're
- 14:23Speaker 2: having to go through it. Same thing in Division two,
- 14:26Speaker 2: same thing in Division three. You're gonna tell me that
- 14:28Speaker 2: Division III college kid not on scholarship can't grind for
- 14:33Speaker 2: fifteen or six or KI is able to grind for
- 14:35Speaker 2: fifteen or sixteen weeks, and a D one kid with
- 14:39Speaker 2: nil money coming in and everything that's going on, you're
- 14:41Speaker 2: gonna tell me he can't handle it. Of course he can,
- 14:44Speaker 2: of course he can. It's just the college football landscape
- 14:47Speaker 2: wasn't used to it in the past, where they're gonna
- 14:49Speaker 2: get used to it this year and everybody's gonna love it.
- 14:52Speaker 3: There's a reason I call him a legend. It's Craig Way.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Craig, thank you for letting me fill in your shoes
- 14:57Speaker 1: this last couple of days. Have a good call tonight
- 15:00Speaker 1: and We'll see you when.
- 15:00Speaker 3: You get back.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Okay, Hey, I appreciate you and Ronald, and we'll look
- 15:05Speaker 2: forward to a holiday week next week. We'll be back
- 15:08Speaker 2: to the house on Monday.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I love it all right.
- 15:10Speaker 1: That is craig Way's names on the show, the voice
- 15:12Speaker 1: of Longhorns, Andrews I will filling in for craig Way
- 15:15Speaker 1: when we come back. We will continue the conversation about
- 15:20Speaker 1: college football, new commits, and one team got a whole
- 15:25Speaker 1: lot better. We'll tell you about it next on sports
- 15:27Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
