Welcome to 70x80, the section of 7080 .it dedicated
• 1:17
to the deepening of the topics discussed in the
• 1:19
articles of the portal. We are with the director
• 1:21
Massimo Lualdi who introduces the topic of the
• 1:24
day. What are we talking about today? Music.
• 1:26
On March 7, 1983, the New Order published Blue
• 1:30
Monday, a single in 12 -inch format, practically
• 1:33
a 33 -round that runs at 45. It is an immediate
• 1:50
success not only for the band but also for its
• 1:53
label, the Factory. Blue Monday becomes in fact
• 1:56
the 12 -inch single most sold ever in the United
• 1:59
Kingdom and many other countries, considered
• 2:01
an essential bridge between disco music of the
• 2:04
70s and house of the 80s. A large part of the
• 2:08
success is obviously due to the music itself,
• 2:10
but we must not forget the contribution of the
• 2:12
iconic laser -cut package to make it look like
• 2:15
a giant floppy disk. The New Order are a post
• 2:19
-punk band, New Wave, originally from Manchester
• 2:22
in the United Kingdom. Formed in 1980, the group
• 2:27
is initially composed by Bernard Summer, Peter
• 2:30
Hook and Stephen Smorry. Their unique sound,
• 2:33
which combines elements of electronic punk rock
• 2:34
and ball music, even thanks to a bit of luck,
• 2:39
as we will see shortly. But let's get back to
• 2:42
the package. The factory commits an error in
• 2:44
the design phase. All focused on the creative
• 2:47
aspect, no one thinks of correctly calculating
• 2:49
the production costs, with the result that the
• 2:51
single costs 5 pence more than the selling price.
• 2:55
In practice, the label loses money on each sale.
• 2:58
But the hypothesis of the calculation error is
• 3:00
denied by some music historians who instead believe
• 3:03
that the issue was considered irrelevant as no
• 3:06
one imagined that the shooting would have exceeded
• 3:08
the few thousands of copies. In any case, the
• 3:10
thing is corrected and not all the more than
• 3:13
a million copies printed turn out to be in red.
• 3:16
The error is in fact remedied by modifying part
• 3:18
of the packaging. Too late, however, not to make
• 3:20
the story part of the classical folklore of the
• 3:23
music industry. Peter Saville, the creator of
• 3:26
the original design, will continue his career
• 3:29
creating the artwork for the album of artists
• 3:32
such as Roxy Music and Peter Gabriel. I do not
• 3:35
pay for the appearance of floppy disks or perhaps
• 3:37
just to be consistent to the end. Saville decides
• 3:41
to code the title of the two songs in an original
• 3:48
colored block code whose decoding key is hidden.
• 3:52
Where? Exactly where. According to the website
• 3:55
Inverse .com, the decoding key is printed on
• 3:59
the back of the disc, but we have found on eBay
• 4:02
a particularly scrupulous collector who has corrected
• 4:06
his sales announcement of 18 photos of the vinyl
• 4:09
and in none we have found the key. Let's get
• 4:12
to the song. Blue Monday has been described by
• 4:14
the BBC as a crucial link between the disco music
• 4:17
of the 70s and the dance house movement that
• 4:20
has revolutionized the world of music in the
• 4:22
80s. Thanks for watching! Nella versione grande,
• 4:31
  45 giri formato 33, dura 7 minuti e 29 secondi.
• 4:35
Secondo il produttore ingegnere del suono Michael
• 4:38
• 4:58
Love performed by Donna Summer. The song reaches
• 5:11
worldwide fame despite being totally without
• 5:13
classic promotion, as the members of the band
• 5:17
well tell in the video that we host on the 7080
• 5:20
.it portal. are different gear cogs. You've got
• 5:28
the beat. And the bass line is going... That's
• 5:36
the engine. Some eights, hi -hats are going...
• 5:39
And you've got triplets that are going... It's
• 5:44
like a load of gears. That's the way I see it.
• 5:47
A load of gears all churning perfectly in sync
• 5:50
with each other. So I see it less of a song,
• 5:53
more of a beat generator. Still gets played today.
• 6:00
It's a guaranteed dance floor fill -up. Hello,
