Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Rolling now into a new next round presented by Hard
- 0:04Speaker 1: Rock Bets on Sporting State. Hey, later in the show,
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm actually going to give you a chance to, we're
- 0:11Speaker 1: one week away, one week away from the start of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the NFL season. So every day leading into the kickoff,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we're going to give you a chance to pick the
- 0:18Speaker 1: winner of each NFL division with our friends at Hard
- 0:22Speaker 1: Rock Bets. You can go there and pick a division winner,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Super Bowl winner, some futures.
- 0:27Speaker 2: There at Hard Rock Bets.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So, uh, A little later in the show, we'll start
- 0:31Speaker 1: with probably the most competitive.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Division in the NFL. The NFC North.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The NFC South. We'll start there today.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Pick the winners. Let's do good competition. That's fine. We
- 0:42Speaker 2: can start there. It's a build-up, Lance, to the kickoff
- 0:46Speaker 2: of the NFL season. It's amazing.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Our Calcutta draft last night, Carolina, who won that division
- 0:50Speaker 3: and almost beat the Rams in the wildcard round, didn't
- 0:54Speaker 3: go until the fourth and final round last night. There
- 0:58Speaker 3: is just no expectation for anybody in that division.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and we'll pick first, second, third, and fourth. The
- 1:03Speaker 2: excitement will be out there. What's the old word? Palatable?
- 1:07Speaker 4: Palatable. The excitement is not palatable.
- 1:11Speaker 2: We'll be able to taste it. Palpable.
- 1:13Speaker 5: That's it.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Palpable excitement. We got palpable excitement.
- 1:16Speaker 1: College football in a second, but the Tennessee Titans, by
- 1:19Speaker 1: the way, when you think Titans, do you think Jets–
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Cardinals and Raiders. Brown gave us this Scotty Scheffler stat.
- 1:28Speaker 1: What was it the other day? Scotty Scheffler, more wins.
- 1:31Speaker 4: More wins than Arkansas. And there were several schools, but
- 1:34Speaker 4: Arkansas was the one that jumped out since 2022. You
- 1:35Speaker 4: got them all?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I got the list. Since 2022.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Well, he won again, by the way, so we just added.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler has more wins since 2022 than Auburn, than Arkansas,
- 1:47Speaker 1: Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, primetime Colorado. Northwestern, Michigan State, Boston College, Stanford, Purdue,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and Oklahoma State. And in the NFL since 2022, Scheffler
- 2:05Speaker 1: has more wins than the Cardinals, the Raiders, the Panthers,
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Jets, the Giants, and the Tennessee Titans.
- 2:14Speaker 2: That's pretty amazing.
- 2:16Speaker 4: When you consider, especially the NFL wins, Kit, 17 chances
- 2:21Speaker 4: a year and I mean Sheffler technically gets that many
- 2:24Speaker 4: chances a year but nobody would not even Tiger Woods
- 2:27Speaker 4: wins to.
- 2:28Speaker 2: That so what is Sheffler's total wins I think it's.
- 2:30Speaker 4: 23 now if I remember right yeah yeah I think
- 2:32Speaker 4: it's 23 in that in that window wow which is insane.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah since 2022 so some brands there in college and
- 2:40Speaker 1: I mean a couple of those that you expect in
- 2:41Speaker 1: the in the NFL the Cardinals and the Jets but
- 2:44Speaker 1: A little surprising that the Titans fall into that, but
- 2:47Speaker 1: that's how it's been lately.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I had a prop out there and I could play
- 2:52Speaker 3: Scheffler against a lot of those teams, I think I
- 2:54Speaker 3: would take those teams this year.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Like if they did a standalone like Scheffler, whatever that
- 2:59Speaker 3: number of wins is.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Like, I mean, how many times do you think I'd
- 3:02Speaker 2: win this year?
- 3:03Speaker 4: So back in January, if I could have taken Scheffler
- 3:06Speaker 4: wins versus Arkansas wins, you'd have gone Scheffler.
- 3:09Speaker 2: No, I think I would have gone to Arkansas. You
- 3:10Speaker 2: would have gone to Arkansas, really? I would have lost
- 3:12Speaker 2: that one. I'm talking about this year.
- 3:13Speaker 1: How much did Scheffler get this 2026 golfing year?
- 3:17Speaker 2: How many did he get? I think five. I was
- 3:19Speaker 2: going to say five. Just guessing. So Arkansas six, you
- 3:23Speaker 2: think maybe?
- 3:24Speaker 6: No.
- 3:24Speaker 4: No.
- 3:24Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't do Arkansas.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I would have to be selective. No, I thought you
- 3:28Speaker 3: were talking about last January. I told you I would
- 3:31Speaker 3: have been wrong on that.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Scheffler. You would take Auburn right now, would you not?
- 3:37Speaker 2: I would take Auburn to beat five. Surely I would
- 3:41Speaker 2: take Auburn to beat five. No, he only had three
- 3:42Speaker 2: wins this year.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Okay.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So damn, when did he get all his wins? Well,
- 3:47Speaker 2: one Saturday.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Or Sunday, I should say. He's got 13 top fives.
- 3:51Speaker 4: So he's in the mix. 20 starts, 13 top fives.
- 3:55Speaker 4: More NFL, and we'll get into the college in a second.
- 3:57Speaker 4: But you can have fun plays like that with our partner,
- 4:00Speaker 4: Hard Rock Bets. They'll provide all the odds and lines
- 4:02Speaker 4: and help support insights and analysis all year long here.

- 4:42Speaker 1: Bet $ 5 to get $ 100 in bonus bets. And if
- 4:45Speaker 1: you're in the Florida market, make sure you jump on

- 4:55Speaker 1: $ 2 million prize. Best place to get more info? It's
- 4:58Speaker 1: right there at hardrock.bet backslash clay. hardrock.bet backslash clay. All right, Brooks,
- 5:06Speaker 1: give me Brooks' microphone, Tyler, if you can. Brooks says
- 5:09Speaker 1: we have a little developing news from Pete Nacos on 3Sports.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Tell it to me, Brooks.
- 5:14Speaker 7: So he is reporting that, quote, several SEC teams are
- 5:18Speaker 7: looking at adding former NFL players, not just LSU, who
- 5:22Speaker 7: has taken the brunt of kind of being the national
- 5:25Speaker 7: scapegoat on this topic, and that SEC teams have to
- 5:30Speaker 7: finalize their rosters early at least 24 hours before their
- 5:34Speaker 7: game starts. Some play Thursday, some play Saturday. I guess
- 5:38Speaker 7: for the ones Thursday, they're SOL because the court ruling
- 5:42Speaker 7: is Thursday to decide all this. The SEC says they're
- 5:46Speaker 7: going to abide by whatever the court rules. So I
- 5:50Speaker 7: guess everybody in the conference is playing this out. It
- 5:55Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It's interesting. I'll let you guys react to it. I
- 5:58Speaker 2: would say this.
- 5:58Speaker 1: On Thursday is the Sankey and the SEC in court.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I believe that's the Louisiana court, right, where the restraining
- 6:05Speaker 1: order is?
- 6:05Speaker 2: I think that's right, yeah. Yeah. If that does not.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Go the SEC's way, I'm told expect a federal lawsuit
- 6:12Speaker 1: like the Big 12 did on Friday to try to
- 6:16Speaker 1: shut it down before we get to the games. All
- 6:18Speaker 1: the SEC presidents are saying that they are going to
- 6:21Speaker 1: abide by the rules of that the SEC and they
- 6:24Speaker 1: expect every league member to do that. It doesn't surprise
- 6:27Speaker 1: me that other people are exploring the NFL players. Keep
- 6:32Speaker 1: in mind the rule is that you've signed an NFL contract.
- 6:37Speaker 1: The big lineman for Texas that is back, can't think
- 6:41Speaker 1: of his name right now, but he's an offensive lineman starter.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I don't know if he's their center or not, but
- 6:47Speaker 1: like Sark's been heavy on Kiffin, But he's let this
- 6:49Speaker 1: guy come back. He went and went to two tryouts
- 6:52Speaker 1: for NFL teams and didn't make it. So he never
- 6:55Speaker 1: signed with anybody. But he's back on Texas's team. So
- 6:58Speaker 1: there's a fine line of being in an NFL camp.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Insanity with the timing, though.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Like, you know, Brooks just said you got to have
- 7:05Speaker 2: the 24 hour window. But I mean, we're. What are we,
- 7:08Speaker 2: 72 hours away from games?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, teams like Missouri, their roster's due in
- 7:14Speaker 4: a matter of hours. You know, like Missouri that is
- 7:16Speaker 4: playing Thursday night. Close of business today.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, close of business today.
- 7:19Speaker 4: They've got to have their roster in, and.
- 7:20Speaker 2: We're still discussing this.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Oklahoma tomorrow before we even know the court result. I
- 7:23Speaker 4: have not seen Alex Golish comment directly on this. Perhaps
- 7:26Speaker 4: he has, and I've just missed it. I do know
- 7:28Speaker 4: Kalen DeBoer was asked directly about it and didn't. out-and-out
- 7:31Speaker 4: say it, but didn't out-and-out distance himself from it either.
- 7:34Speaker 4: He made it sound like, you know... There's some players
- 7:36Speaker 4: out there, I think is the way he said it.
- 7:37Speaker 4: There's a couple of players out there.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I think C.J.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Dupree is a guy that Alabama could still use. Though
- 7:45Speaker 1: I like Big 40, I can't think of his name
- 7:47Speaker 1: now when I'm watching the practice stuff. Looks like he's
- 7:49Speaker 1: going to be a pretty good little tight end for Alabama.
- 7:52Speaker 2: But I... Cameron Lott, too. He got cut. Detroit cut
- 7:57Speaker 2: him this week.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I mean, there's some guys who... Remember, you have to
- 8:00Speaker 1: fall into that five and five category.
- 8:02Speaker 2: You have to be in the 2022 class. You can't
- 8:05Speaker 2: be bringing back.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Who's the kid that just got cut, Trayvon Diggs. You
- 8:09Speaker 1: can't be bringing back Diggs.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but I still don't understand how you still– I mean,
- 8:14Speaker 3: this past weekend we had two seven-year guys on that
- 8:18Speaker 3: offensive line for Virginia.
- 8:19Speaker 4: You say you can't do it until Trayvon Diggs goes
- 8:22Speaker 4: to a judge. He gets a judge to say, well,
- 8:23Speaker 4: you know what, this doesn't add up.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Trust me, this is all going to work out before
- 8:28Speaker 1: we play on Saturday. It may be some murkiness on
- 8:30Speaker 1: the Thursday night games for Missouri and maybe Friday for Oklahoma.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But before we get to Saturday's games, all this NFL
- 8:38Speaker 1: stuff will be shut down.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Now, I say this without knowing how the legal situation
- 8:41Speaker 4: would view this, okay? How the legal authorities, the judges
- 8:44Speaker 4: would view this. But just yesterday, the college football playoff
- 8:48Speaker 4: committee met, not the committee, but the board, whatever, the directors,
- 8:53Speaker 4: not the people that select the teams, but the people
- 8:55Speaker 4: that run the playoff. All the commissioners plus Notre Dame.
- 8:57Speaker 4: And the discussion was there that the college football playoff
- 9:00Speaker 4: could just out and out say, we're not taking a
- 9:02Speaker 4: team that's got anybody that came from the NFL. We
- 9:03Speaker 4: disqualify you. That would shut this down immediately if it
- 9:07Speaker 4: stood up in court. They didn't make a decision, but again,
- 9:11Speaker 4: you're not impeding anybody's rights. if you're okay, you can
- 9:15Speaker 4: play at LSU, but LSU just can't play in our playoff.
- 9:18Speaker 2: That's right. I don't think that would stand up in court.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I mean, I think it would stand up in court.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You're not violating my human rights or whatever.
- 9:26Speaker 4: If it does, this is over. Like Lane Kiffin might
- 9:29Speaker 4: consider NFL players, but if the college football playoff committee
- 9:31Speaker 4: came out and said, you can play all you want,
- 9:32Speaker 4: but you're not going to be in our playoff.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Ultimately, Lane Kiffin would never do it.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Ultimately, all the presidents are going to, Played by the
- 9:40Speaker 1: SEC rules.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I thought we already had that. I just can't believe
- 9:44Speaker 3: we're still talking about this. You know, it's just amazing.
- 9:47Speaker 3: You would think that the other teams would definitely back off.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Why would you even, like– I just don't understand this.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I mean, Lane Kiffin, it's one thing for him to
- 9:57Speaker 3: die on that hill, but it looks so bad.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Then other guys now are circling around and thinking about doing.
- 10:02Speaker 1: This clemson lsu one of the biggest games in the
- 10:04Speaker 1: country this weekend dabbo sweeney uh i mean dabbo's been
- 10:08Speaker 1: around long enough you know you don't want to give
- 10:10Speaker 1: any bulletin board stuff when you're the underdog and you
- 10:12Speaker 1: may be going in sneaking up on lsu in their
- 10:15Speaker 1: home stadium and the debut there of uh Lane Kiffin
- 10:19Speaker 1: is the coach in LSU. So don't say anything that
- 10:23Speaker 1: could motivate the other side.
- 10:25Speaker 8: No, it doesn't frustrate me. I don't give a– I
- 10:28Speaker 8: think it's– I mean, honestly, rarely am I at a
- 10:31Speaker 8: loss for words, but Chapel Womack, kind of a loss
- 10:34Speaker 8: of words. I would just say it's kind of embarrassing.
- 10:38Speaker 8: I mean, honestly, it's just embarrassing that that's where we are.
- 10:44Speaker 8: And I don't blame the kids. and people trying to
- 10:46Speaker 8: take advantage of the system. I just think it's embarrassing
- 10:48Speaker 8: where we are with college football. And we've been there
- 10:51Speaker 8: for a while. So, it didn't, I just, I just
- 10:55Speaker 8: keep my energy and my focus on and my energy
- 10:59Speaker 8: on the things that I control and the things that
- 11:01Speaker 8: matter and that's these kids here and our team. But,
- 11:04Speaker 8: you know, all that outside stuff, I mean, we just
- 11:06Speaker 8: kind of, we just kind of, no pun intended, we
- 11:09Speaker 8: just stay in our lane, you know, here at Clemson.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Try to.
- 11:13Speaker 8: Every now and then somebody will ram into us, but,
- 11:15Speaker 8: but we try to just kind of handle our business here.
- 11:18Speaker 2: But it's embarrassing. I mean, it really is.
- 11:22Speaker 8: You know, we have no rules. There's no governance.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I mean, it's a joke. There's zero rules.
- 11:29Speaker 8: And when you enforce rules, somebody just goes and finds
- 11:32Speaker 8: a judge to say, no, you can't enforce that rule. So,
- 11:35Speaker 8: I mean, never did I think I'd be living in
- 11:38Speaker 8: an era like this, but that's where we are.
- 11:40Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: He went on to say, I mean, He went on
- 11:44Speaker 1: to say, hey, back in June, I was a guest
- 11:46Speaker 1: and I was watching practices with the Cleveland Browns. Am
- 11:49Speaker 1: I going to get charged with tampering? Because I was
- 11:52Speaker 1: at the Browns camp and watching the NFL players in person.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And that one guy is leaving Ole Miss, going to LSU.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Am I up for possibly being tampered? getting in the
- 12:02Speaker 1: tampering situation. He was joking about being in an NFL camp.
- 12:06Speaker 3: So when he says embarrassing, you know, I thought early
- 12:09Speaker 3: he was talking about Lane Kiffin specifically, and then it
- 12:11Speaker 3: was more about college football, just the state of college football,
- 12:15Speaker 3: but it seems like he kind of circled back around.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Lane was clearly on his mind. As Brooks said, LSU
- 12:20Speaker 2: is the face of this. Oh, there's no doubt.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Even though other people are maybe exploring or keeping the
- 12:25Speaker 1: door open just in case the ruling goes that way,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I mean— LSU does have a couple of guys practicing.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Which is weird because I go back to our Matt
- 12:31Speaker 4: Moscona interview yesterday, and Matt was like, yeah, but really
- 12:34Speaker 4: none of them are going to contribute.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Well, one's a backup. They're not going to start.
- 12:37Speaker 4: They're not going to start. They're barely going to contribute.
- 12:39Speaker 4: I don't know why you would go to this trouble
- 12:41Speaker 4: for non-contributors. That's what I'm looking.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Forward to, to see if it's a distraction for LSU
- 12:48Speaker 1: or has it just been a great cover.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I mean, think about this.
- 12:51Speaker 1: All this conversation has been about this roster and all this.
- 12:55Speaker 1: It's taking a little pressure off of– the actual players
- 12:58Speaker 1: who will play in the game for LSU before a
- 13:00Speaker 1: big opening game. I mean, that's a, I mean, you
- 13:03Speaker 1: could have a lot of hype around this game. I mean,
- 13:04Speaker 1: Marty Smith earlier today, I just saw this.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Marty Smith tweeted.
- 13:08Speaker 1: This out and, and I've been to a lot of
- 13:11Speaker 1: big games, including Saban's return, but Marty says LSU football
- 13:14Speaker 1: officials confirmed to ESPN that Saturday season opening home game
- 13:18Speaker 1: against Clemson is the most media celebrity credential game in
- 13:22Speaker 1: tiger stadium history. Lane Kiffin's debut is going to be
- 13:25Speaker 1: a wild scene in Death Valley. So that means it's
- 13:28Speaker 1: a crazier, more credentialed scene than Nick Saban returning in 2008.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I don't feel that kind of buzz. I really don't either.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Maybe the biggest game could end up being the biggest
- 13:37Speaker 3: game of week one, but it just doesn't feel like
- 13:40Speaker 3: it's that kind of buzz. But back to my buddy C.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Stu that doesn't leave the couch is talking about going
- 13:45Speaker 3: to Baton Rouge this morning.
- 13:46Speaker 2: So this is all just excitement over Lane Kiffin? It's
- 13:49Speaker 2: got to be. Well, I mean, part of it, too,
- 13:51Speaker 2: is like... It's a name-brand game.
- 13:53Speaker 4: It's the only one on Saturday. It's the only name-brand
- 13:55Speaker 4: game on Saturday.
- 13:56Speaker 5: That's it.
- 13:56Speaker 2: It's the biggest game, yeah. I mean, there's no other
- 13:58Speaker 2: name-brand game on Saturday.
- 13:59Speaker 5: No.
- 13:59Speaker 2: There isn't. You know, you've got.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Some name-ish brand games on Sunday and Monday, but there's
- 14:06Speaker 4: one name-brand game on Saturday.
- 14:07Speaker 2: That's it.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 4: So, I mean, that's going to draw in... That is
- 14:11Speaker 4: going to draw in the media part of that. The
- 14:13Speaker 4: celebrity part of that is what is interesting to me because...
- 14:16Speaker 4: What's the celebrity angle here? I know when we had
- 14:18Speaker 4: Game of the Century in Tuscaloosa. When we had Game
- 14:21Speaker 4: of the Century in Tuscaloosa or when 2019 LSU came in,
- 14:25Speaker 4: was that the one? LeBron was at one of them.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Was it Game of the Century I think LeBron was at?
- 14:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but you got that. It was two top fives
- 14:31Speaker 3: going at it. It was late in the season.
- 14:32Speaker 4: And in 2019, President Trump was there, right? When Alabama
- 14:35Speaker 4: and LSU played in 2019. This is an unranked Clemson team.
- 14:38Speaker 4: They're not even in the top 25.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Keep in mind, when you're talking about celebrities, you also got–
- 14:42Speaker 1: The NFL isn't playing this weekend, so you have a
- 14:44Speaker 1: little downtime for some NFL stars. You could have Jamar there.
- 14:49Speaker 1: You could have Jefferson there.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Jaden Daniels won't be there. Jaden Daniels will not be there.
- 14:53Speaker 1: But you know what I'm saying. There could be a
- 14:54Speaker 1: lot of these LSU greats. Joe Burrow could be there.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I mean, if you guys want his celebrity. If I
- 14:59Speaker 2: was offered a flight over there Saturday, I wouldn't go.
- 15:01Speaker 4: I wouldn't want nothing out, especially since Marty said that.
- 15:04Speaker 4: The last thing I want to do is be in
- 15:06Speaker 4: that mess. I'm just surprised it's that big of a deal.
- 15:09Speaker 4: I mean, that's the Lane Kiffin effect, I guess, and
- 15:12Speaker 4: the excitement.
- 15:13Speaker 2: For Lane Kiffin is crazy.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And one of the brands in college football, at a
- 15:17Speaker 1: venue under the lights to start off the season. A
- 15:20Speaker 1: lot of pluses about this game. Sam Levitt's the quarterback
- 15:23Speaker 1: for LSU. Made his fame at Arizona State, leading the
- 15:26Speaker 1: Devils to the playoffs, but now he's the hand-picked quarterback
- 15:30Speaker 1: to lead Lane Kiffin's first team. He got asked this
- 15:32Speaker 1: week about the biggest misconception about Lane Kiffin.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Sam, I'm not sure if you've been on Twitter or recently.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Hopefully not.
- 15:41Speaker 2: What's the biggest misperception about Coach Kiffin, do you think,
- 15:45Speaker 2: from the outside looking in?
- 15:48Speaker 9: That's a good question. I guess everyone knows he's really
- 15:53Speaker 9: forward thinking, but I think the coolest thing about him
- 15:55Speaker 9: and just everybody else upstairs is just the camaraderie from
- 15:59Speaker 9: the coaching staff perspective.
- 16:00Speaker 2: They really do feel like a family.
- 16:02Speaker 9: They enjoy spending time with each other, running around on
- 16:05Speaker 9: the field, competing and everything, playing pickleball. Um, so it's
- 16:08Speaker 9: been really cool to see just how, you know, they
- 16:10Speaker 9: operate upstairs. Everyone gets along really well. Um, and then
- 16:14Speaker 9: that trickles down to the entire organization, you know, everything
- 16:17Speaker 9: starts from the top and goes down and, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 9: the whole team's been vibing in, um, playing as a
- 16:23Speaker 9: collective group and unit. Um, and that only happens because
- 16:26Speaker 9: of the way that everything is up is upstairs, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 9: and it goes into the, all the position rooms. And
- 16:31Speaker 9: when we're sitting in here for unit and team meetings, uh,
- 16:34Speaker 9: just the way that coaches are able to call on
- 16:35Speaker 9: other coaches and, um, They understand exactly what they're going
- 16:39Speaker 9: to get out of each other. So he just does
- 16:41Speaker 9: a great job, you know, creating that from the top.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Now, you picture Saban in his days of being buttoned
- 16:47Speaker 1: up top to the bottom. Is that the perception you
- 16:49Speaker 1: ever get of Lane Kiffin, that everything is buttoned up
- 16:51Speaker 1: inside his program top to the bottom?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Perception-wise, no. No, perception-wise, no, but in reality, probably so.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I mean, most of these guys that are Saban, you know, protégés,
- 17:06Speaker 3: I mean, they try to run it exactly like Saban
- 17:07Speaker 3: ran it. Now some can do it and others can't.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Kirby's done it. Kirk Cignetti's done it.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Part of the Saban documentary that is leaked is him
- 17:14Speaker 4: discussing Kiffin's departure. And in the course that I don't think,
- 17:20Speaker 4: I can't remember if Saban said it or the narrator
- 17:22Speaker 4: said it, that part of the reason Saban decided to
- 17:25Speaker 4: move on after the Washington game, before the Clemson game,
- 17:29Speaker 4: was that he was late for several meetings, which that
- 17:32Speaker 4: is not buttoned up.
- 17:33Speaker 2: That is not buttoned up.
- 17:35Speaker 3: The opposite of being buttoned up is being fired between
- 17:38Speaker 3: semifinal games in the playoffs.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And we all heard stories about him calling plays they
- 17:42Speaker 1: hadn't practiced in weeks.
- 17:44Speaker 4: I talked to somebody that was on the staff that
- 17:45Speaker 4: was like, the team was perplexed and furious because he's
- 17:50Speaker 4: calling plays that were not in the game plan. They
- 17:53Speaker 4: had not run since like week six. And Lane's calling
- 17:56Speaker 4: them during the game. And Jalen Hurts is looking at
- 17:59Speaker 4: the sideline like, what are we doing?
- 18:02Speaker 3: I mean, he wasn't even running his own Tinder account
- 18:04Speaker 3: back in the day. I legitimately heard that. I think
- 18:08Speaker 3: things have changed for Lane internally as a coach, though.
- 18:11Speaker 2: And that's why I don't know why he deals with
- 18:12Speaker 2: all this other bullshit.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Well, my point being, it could just be camouflage to
- 18:18Speaker 1: take a little heat off of his team. The show
- 18:21Speaker 1: that is Lane Kiffin, Maybe he's found that, maybe last
- 18:25Speaker 1: year at Ole Miss, he found that perfect mix of,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I can do all this that is sort of like
- 18:30Speaker 1: a force field that keeps it off of my team
- 18:32Speaker 1: and the attraction is all on me.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Well, I saw somewhere the most overrated team of college
- 18:38Speaker 3: football this year is LSU. Now, the five of us,
- 18:41Speaker 3: we did our 12-team playoffs and nobody had LSU in it.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Not one of them.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Yeah, LSU didn't go until later in the draft last night,
- 18:48Speaker 3: like 30 or something.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I mean, there were a lot of teams that went
- 18:50Speaker 2: in front of LSU, so I don't know.
- 18:52Speaker 3: It's kind of weird to think there is a big expectation.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I think the expectation is more in the future for
- 18:58Speaker 3: LSU over the next two or three years. But I'm
- 19:01Speaker 3: telling you, if Lane gets an opportunity, especially after those
- 19:04Speaker 3: comments from Dabo. If he can run it up, I
- 19:06Speaker 3: went back to when Lane was first game at Tennessee
- 19:10Speaker 3: against Western Kentucky, where he had players out, true freshmen,
- 19:14Speaker 3: and scoring touchdowns late just to.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Run it up and give these guys opportunities. If he
- 19:19Speaker 2: gets an opportunity Saturday night to put on extra touchdowns,
- 19:21Speaker 2: he'll do it.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Dot the I of a brand, even though they're not
- 19:24Speaker 1: in the top 25 in Clemson. One quick note about
- 19:27Speaker 1: another game that probably, well, I know it's not getting
- 19:30Speaker 1: the same fanfare. as Clemson and LSU, but this is
- 19:34Speaker 1: another competitive game. Baylor and Auburn in Atlanta is a
- 19:38Speaker 1: really good contest. Here's Dave Aranda, Baylor's head coach, on
- 19:43Speaker 1: the advantage of having DJ Lagway in this game because
- 19:45Speaker 1: Lagway has seat time as an SEC quarterback, and so
- 19:49Speaker 1: he goes and plays an Auburn team that has the
- 19:52Speaker 1: skill set and the pedigree that he's used to playing against.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Here's Dave Aranda. Is there an.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Advantage for D.J. having played in the SEC, going up
- 20:02Speaker 5: against an SEC team?
- 20:04Speaker 2: It's an advantage that he's played a lot of football.
- 20:06Speaker 10: I think he's been in some big arenas, and he's
- 20:08Speaker 10: been in some bright lights. And so I don't think
- 20:12Speaker 10: nothing's going to phase him that way. I think he's
- 20:15Speaker 10: got really good confidence. I know that he likes the
- 20:17Speaker 10: plan that Spav has for him. And so to get
- 20:20Speaker 10: a real energized and confident DJ is a plus for us.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll go back to saying that you guys, some
- 20:26Speaker 1: of you were not with us on the next round,
- 20:27Speaker 1: the first time we ever heard Dave Aranda as a
- 20:29Speaker 1: head coach.
- 20:31Speaker 2: He is the.
- 20:33Speaker 1: NPR, NPR PBS coach in college football. Instantly you go
- 20:38Speaker 1: to him and it's like he's he's soft spoken and
- 20:42Speaker 1: he's like he's doing a podcast in a library.
- 20:44Speaker 2: He whispers.
- 20:45Speaker 3: And, you know, we'll have our man Matt Mosley on
- 20:47Speaker 3: later and he does a really good Dave Aranda impression.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Scott, can I ask Scott a question? Scott, are you
- 20:53Speaker 4: happy the Auburn Baylor two game series is about to
- 20:55Speaker 4: be over?
- 20:56Speaker 6: I am not sad that I will no longer be
- 21:00Speaker 6: listening to Dave Aranda pressers.
- 21:03Speaker 3: This is great that Lagway's got SEC experience, but the
- 21:05Speaker 3: fact of the matter is he's 0-6 on the road,
- 21:08Speaker 3: and he threw 14 interceptions last year. So what kind
- 21:11Speaker 3: of Lagway are you going to get? I would be
- 21:13Speaker 3: shocked if Lagway is as productive as his quarterback Sawyer
- 21:17Speaker 3: Robertson was last year.
- 21:18Speaker 2: If Lagway is, then Baylor could be one of the
- 21:20Speaker 2: surprises of the Big 12. Now that defense has got
- 21:22Speaker 2: to get right.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Speaking of surprises, in our next segment, I've given the
- 21:27Speaker 1: guys four categories to fill out. A player that will
- 21:32Speaker 1: burst on the scene in week one, the biggest surprise
- 21:35Speaker 1: in week one, player or team, biggest disappointment, and a
- 21:40Speaker 1: surprise storyline coming out of week one. All that's ahead
- 21:44Speaker 1: as we continue on the next round presented by Hard
- 21:46Speaker 1: Rock Bets right here on Sporting State.
- 21:49Speaker 2: My life's like a Hank Williams Jr. song.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'm very proud of my daddy's name. But would it
- 21:57Speaker 1: have been easier if my last name was Kroenke?
- 22:00Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Stan Kroenke, who owns LT's Rams, yesterday bought the majority
- 22:07Speaker 1: of the Los Angeles Angels. And you say to yourself,
- 22:10Speaker 1: why would he waste so much money? The Angels are
- 22:12Speaker 1: a horrible organization. Well, keep in mind that Kroenke's Rams,
- 22:19Speaker 1: Arsenal in the Premier League, the Nuggets, the Avalanche, and
- 22:23Speaker 1: even an MLS team, the Rapid or whatever he owns,
- 22:26Speaker 1: whoever that is, have won championships in recent years since
- 22:30Speaker 1: he bought them. So he's got an NBA, an NHL,
- 22:33Speaker 1: an NFL, Super Bowl, MLS, and a Premier League championship.
- 22:37Speaker 1: He owns all those teams, and now he's adding the
- 22:40Speaker 1: Angels to that portfolio. His history would tell you the
- 22:45Speaker 1: Angels are about to turn around and be a pretty
- 22:46Speaker 1: good baseball franchise.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah, one of the most....
- 22:50Speaker 3: Irrelevant franchises in professional sports right now. And Artie Moreno
- 22:55Speaker 3: did such a bad job as the owner for the Angels.
- 22:58Speaker 3: And now you get it. Say what you want about Kroenke.
- 23:00Speaker 3: The guy is a great owner. He spends a ton
- 23:03Speaker 3: of money. I mean, look, the proof is right there.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I remember St.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Louis fans were so upset the way that they basically
- 23:09Speaker 3: tanked the entire product, got them out, took them back
- 23:12Speaker 3: to Los Angeles. I was excited because I've got no
- 23:15Speaker 3: affiliation with St.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Louis anymore.
- 23:17Speaker 9: St.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Louis fans hate him, but you can't deny what he
- 23:19Speaker 2: did with the Rams.
- 23:21Speaker 4: How much money does this guy have?
- 23:22Speaker 1: I think $ 23. 6 billion is what he has invested in
- 23:27Speaker 1: pro teams.
- 23:28Speaker 4: That's all his pro team investment. Which I know that's
- 23:31Speaker 4: cash and checks.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I get it. You know, once you get to a multi-billionaire,
- 23:35Speaker 2: I don't even know how you can't.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Even stop and count it. I watched the opening of
- 23:41Speaker 1: the Premier League. Arsenal, who won the Premier League last year,
- 23:44Speaker 1: And they were discussing, okay, who's going to challenge Arsenal?
- 23:48Speaker 1: And they were like, I don't know if anybody is.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Maybe Chelsea is what they said. So basically they talk
- 23:54Speaker 1: about them like we talked about the Dodgers.
- 23:55Speaker 2: It's about to be a Premier League dynasty. Talk about
- 23:57Speaker 2: the Rams. It had been forever since Arsenal had won
- 24:00Speaker 2: a Premier League.
- 24:01Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I mean, when's the last time we talked about an
- 24:02Speaker 3: NFL team like people are talking about the Rams?
- 24:04Speaker 2: I hate it. No, I know you do.
- 24:05Speaker 4: But I literally saw on that third TV, one of
- 24:07Speaker 4: the ESPN talking head shows the other day, is this
- 24:09Speaker 4: the greatest NFL defense of all time? And all I
- 24:12Speaker 4: can think about is Lance looking at that going, gosh.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I mean, my gosh. I mean, at least let's get
- 24:16Speaker 2: to November.
- 24:17Speaker 3: You know, if they're holding opponents to, you know, 11
- 24:19Speaker 3: points a game and we're in November and they've got
- 24:21Speaker 3: one loss, then you can start to discuss it. I've
- 24:24Speaker 3: never understood this in, like, people that talk about NFL schedules,
- 24:27Speaker 3: which we do.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Like, you don't know who's going to be good one
- 24:29Speaker 2: year to the next. All NFL schedules are tough.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Eric McLean joins the show coming up at 945. Before
- 24:35Speaker 1: we do our look ahead to week one. Some bold predictions.

- 25:55Speaker 4: we all have the same categories, different answer. Week one
- 25:58Speaker 4: storylines for me. Bama fans, do you remember the name
- 26:02Speaker 4: Richard Young?
- 26:03Speaker 7: I do.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Had a big recruit that came to Alabama, never could
- 26:06Speaker 1: get carries. running back for Colorado as they come play
- 26:11Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. If Colorado wins, it likely will be on
- 26:14Speaker 1: the back of Richard Young. Watch for him to burst
- 26:17Speaker 1: out this weekend, or bust out, however we want to
- 26:20Speaker 1: say that. Surprise that will surprise you this weekend. UCLA-Cal
- 26:25Speaker 1: is an entertaining game. I think one and a half
- 26:26Speaker 1: is the point spread on that one at Hard Rock Betts.
- 26:28Speaker 2: It is.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Nico and UCLA with a big road win at Cal.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Look for Nico to look like the quarterback he was
- 26:36Speaker 1: that led Tennessee to the playoffs.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Boy, a lot of expectation for Bob Chesney.
- 26:40Speaker 5: He is.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I mean, people are almost doing, not to the Indiana level,
- 26:44Speaker 3: but hey, look what he did at JMU. Got him
- 26:45Speaker 3: to a playoff last year, bringing JMU players over. So
- 26:48Speaker 3: Nico's going to have more talent around him. That win
- 26:51Speaker 3: total six and a half for UCLA. That seems a
- 26:54Speaker 3: little ambitious, but we'll see.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Biggest disappointment this weekend. I think it'll be Michigan for
- 26:58Speaker 1: game one. People will be questioning Michigan because, Unfortunately, they've
- 27:02Speaker 1: got a sneaky good team. They're playing in Western Michigan.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It's not going to be the pushover people think it's.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Going to be. No, I mean, they are your MAAC
- 27:08Speaker 2: favorites right now.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Look, you're catching 27.5 points in this spot for the Broncos.
- 27:13Speaker 3: And what Lance Taylor wants to do, not this one,
- 27:15Speaker 3: the other one, the guy that will be ultimately, I believe,
- 27:18Speaker 3: a star. I think you guys are big fans of
- 27:20Speaker 3: Lance Taylor, too, the way he's building a program. But
- 27:23Speaker 3: he wants his boys in that state to be able
- 27:25Speaker 3: to play with Michigan. And this is a moment for them. And,
- 27:28Speaker 3: you know, I could see this go that way where we're,
- 27:30Speaker 3: you know, in the third quarter and it's a one-possession
- 27:33Speaker 3: game and Michigan ends up winning the game by double digits.
- 27:36Speaker 3: But Michigan, you know, year one with Kyle Winningham, although
- 27:39Speaker 3: there's a big upgrade at coach, how.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Much talent do they have right there?
- 27:43Speaker 5: That's right.
- 27:43Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And I think it'll be like, oh, man, look how
- 27:46Speaker 1: Michigan and Western Michigan play a tougher game than they
- 27:49Speaker 1: were expecting. So people will be talking about that coming
- 27:51Speaker 1: out of the weekend. And then Kentucky's offense in Lexington
- 27:55Speaker 1: will be a storyline coming out. Look how much better
- 27:57Speaker 1: Will Stein has Kentucky's offense.
- 27:59Speaker 2: C.J.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Baxter running back there, former Texas running back, running back
- 28:04Speaker 1: at Kentucky. I know that's opposite of the upset alert
- 28:07Speaker 1: from our buddy Forrester there, but Kentucky's offense looking good
- 28:10Speaker 1: against Youngtown State. Those are some of my storylines for
- 28:14Speaker 1: week one.
- 28:15Speaker 5: What about you, Lance?
- 28:17Speaker 6: Hi.
- 28:17Speaker 9: Hi.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Because one of my worst bowl predictions last year was
- 28:20Speaker 3: Makai Hughes leading the nation and rushing for Oregon.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So we're going back to that well.
- 28:26Speaker 3: After two seasons with Willie Fritz at Houston, this guy
- 28:30Speaker 3: had over 2,700 rushing yards, had 22 touchdowns, averaged 5.3
- 28:32Speaker 3: yards per carry. Now he is back reunited with his
- 28:39Speaker 3: former head coach at Houston. I think Makai Hughes is
- 28:42Speaker 3: going to have a massive game this weekend against Oregon State.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Fritz knows how to use him. He does.
- 28:47Speaker 3: And, you know, he only got 17 carries last year
- 28:49Speaker 3: for the Oregon Ducks. Was in the doghouse of Dan
- 28:51Speaker 3: Lanning all year long. So watch for Makai Hughes to
- 28:54Speaker 3: have a major, major bust out. My surprise, Oklahoma State. Look,
- 28:58Speaker 3: this team is 1-20 in their last 21 games. They
- 29:01Speaker 3: have been awful. The last game Mike Gundy coached was
- 29:04Speaker 3: a 16-9 loss last year to Tulsa. This is a
- 29:07Speaker 3: revenge game, although Eric Morse wasn't on that sideline. They
- 29:11Speaker 3: want to come out running the football with Caleb Hawkins. Obviously,
- 29:14Speaker 3: Mestermaker is going to have a big game through the air,
- 29:17Speaker 3: but you've got eight starters coming from the number one
- 29:20Speaker 3: offense in North Texas last year.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Immediately, Oklahoma will be better offensively.
- 29:25Speaker 3: My biggest disappointment is going to be Memphis coming back home.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Not in the 9-0-1. I think Memphis is going to
- 29:33Speaker 2: lose this game. I really do. They're going to lose
- 29:36Speaker 2: this game to Butch Jones? I think Arkansas State will
- 29:38Speaker 2: win this game outright.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Scott is going to be devastated. That's his guy, Charles. Scott,
- 29:42Speaker 4: can you imagine your guy getting outcoached by Butch Jones?
- 29:45Speaker 2: Quote me, belt to ass this weekend.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Okay, this is going to go hand-in-hand because after Memphis, well,
- 29:52Speaker 3: before Memphis loses, my storyline of the weekend is going
- 29:57Speaker 3: to be how dominant Oregon's defense is. We know Dante
- 30:00Speaker 3: Moore is going to be a great quarterback. We really
- 30:01Speaker 3: don't know who he's throwing the football to on a
- 30:03Speaker 3: consistent basis. But that defense with eight returning starters under
- 30:08Speaker 3: Dan Lanning, I think they go out. I wouldn't be
- 30:10Speaker 3: shocked if they shut Boise State out.
- 30:13Speaker 2: How about that? Oh, wow. I think that will be
- 30:16Speaker 2: the storyline.
- 30:16Speaker 3: And once that happens, then I think Memphis fans are
- 30:18Speaker 3: going to look, damn, Boise just got shut out by Oregon.
- 30:22Speaker 3: We're going to open this season 3-0. After we take
- 30:24Speaker 3: care of Arkansas State, we've already beaten UNLV. We're going
- 30:27Speaker 3: to go out to Boise. We're going to win that game.
- 30:28Speaker 3: We're going undefeated this year. We're your group six rep. Oh,
- 30:31Speaker 3: not so fast.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friend. Ducks, D. Melt to.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Ass we'll see on the tigers i like charles huff
- 30:40Speaker 3: i'm not pulling against the guy i'm just saying this
- 30:43Speaker 3: is a bad spot for memphis based on last weekend
- 30:46Speaker 3: and what's going on next.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Weekend god's lived in memphis almost as long as charles
- 30:49Speaker 4: huff has that's right the 901 baby that's our home
- 30:53Speaker 4: can you imagine.
- 30:54Speaker 2: A man say man i'm bringing this up on.
- 30:57Speaker 3: The show yesterday like you know our bracket payoffs I mean,
- 31:01Speaker 3: they're okay sometimes.
- 31:02Speaker 2: We've kind of run out of ideas.
- 31:03Speaker 3: There's some great ideas out there, and I saw over
- 31:05Speaker 3: the weekend a dude lost his fantasy league, and he
- 31:08Speaker 3: had to go get $ 1, 001 bills.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Put them in a clear backpack, and he had to
- 31:13Speaker 2: walk the streets of Memphis for two hours.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Handing them out? No. Risking his ass. You had to
- 31:20Speaker 2: have $ 1, 000 at the end, too. That tells you about
- 31:22Speaker 2: the 904.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I saw on my algorithm this morning the– Instead of
- 31:29Speaker 1: drawing for a fantasy football draft order, they had everybody
- 31:33Speaker 1: in the league run a 40-yard dash, and if you
- 31:35Speaker 1: were the fastest, you got the first.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Pick down to the last pick. Oh, so they did
- 31:38Speaker 2: an order of finish? Yeah. God, you know there's that
- 31:40Speaker 2: one fat guy that's like, son of a bitch. I'll
- 31:42Speaker 2: just pick last. I don't want to run.
- 31:44Speaker 1: The most athletic guy was like, he was like, I
- 31:47Speaker 1: really want the swing where I picked last and the first,
- 31:50Speaker 1: first and the second. So he ran it in 11 seconds.
- 31:52Speaker 2: He tanked it. 11 seconds. He tanked it. I'll tell you,
- 31:55Speaker 2: the best was... He was drinking a beer. He was
- 31:57Speaker 2: doing it.
- 31:58Speaker 3: One loser had to go to a sperm bank, donate sperm,
- 32:00Speaker 3: and he had to circle, you can contact me at 18.
- 32:03Speaker 2: That's the one I was about to bring up. That's incredible.
- 32:05Speaker 2: I have no idea if it's real or not, but
- 32:07Speaker 2: that's terrible. Yeah, that is awful. You're dealing with people's
- 32:09Speaker 2: lives at that point. You're just counting the years.
- 32:11Speaker 4: But it does remind me of the office where Michael
- 32:14Speaker 4: and Jan.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Gets artificial insemination. And Kevin's like, was it the sperm
- 32:20Speaker 4: bank behind the jellies? Because I donate there. And then
- 32:24Speaker 4: you cut to Jan's face and she's like.
- 32:26Speaker 2: That's so good. That show was so fun.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Was it the sperm bank behind the jellies?
- 32:34Speaker 2: Because I donate there. That's my bank. Okay, Brownie, what
- 32:37Speaker 2: do you have?
- 32:38Speaker 4: My player is going to be Cam Colvin. That is
- 32:43Speaker 4: going to be one of the stories coming out of
- 32:45Speaker 4: week one. You know what I love about your youngest daughter?
- 32:48Speaker 8: What?
- 32:49Speaker 2: That she would call you out for the playoff. She's like, Dad,
- 32:52Speaker 2: stop trying to be too cool. Yeah, she's like that.
- 32:54Speaker 4: So Cam Coleman's going to be the bust out. Yeah,
- 32:56Speaker 4: Cam Coleman, stock up, Cam Coleman.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Buy all the stock you get right now. That's expected, right?
- 33:01Speaker 4: Well, but I think they're going to make a statement.
- 33:02Speaker 4: I think it is going to be all Cam. I mean,
- 33:05Speaker 4: Texas is... Texas State's a huge underdog. I think Sark
- 33:10Speaker 4: would love to have a Heisman winner, too.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, and I think he would love to have
- 33:13Speaker 2: two in the running.
- 33:14Speaker 1: The crazy for Cam Coleman, I saw him being interviewed
- 33:16Speaker 1: this week, And he was being asked, what can slow
- 33:21Speaker 1: you down this year? And he continues to say the
- 33:23Speaker 1: traffic in Austin.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It's horrible. He goes, it gets worse every day.
- 33:27Speaker 4: You got to come through school traffic here. My surprise
- 33:31Speaker 4: is going to be Faison Brandon.
- 33:32Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Again, I'm not saying he's going to have a great year,
- 33:34Speaker 4: but I think in this first start against a badly
- 33:37Speaker 4: overmatched opponent that Tennessee is playing, Furman, I think Josh
- 33:41Speaker 4: Heupel is going to try to build some confidence in
- 33:44Speaker 4: this kid and get this offense flowing in. So I
- 33:46Speaker 4: think If you can't unleash him against Furman, who are
- 33:48Speaker 4: you going to unleash him against, right?
- 33:49Speaker 2: That's right.
- 33:50Speaker 6: Hey, just to stick with a running gag on the
- 33:54Speaker 6: show here.
- 33:54Speaker 2: What did I misspell?
- 33:55Speaker 6: Faison, he spells it with a Z.
- 33:58Speaker 11: Yes.
- 33:59Speaker 2: How about that? Faison.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You spelled it like the actor Donald Faison.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Okay. Boy, they get on your ass for your spelling.
- 34:08Speaker 2: They should. I'm a terrible speller.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Faison with a Z, Brandon. My disappointment is going to
- 34:13Speaker 4: be Ole Miss offense. Now, are they going to lose
- 34:15Speaker 4: the game to Louisville? I am not saying that, but
- 34:17Speaker 4: I think Louisville is a quality opponent, and I just
- 34:18Speaker 4: don't think it's going to look as crisp as it did.
- 34:20Speaker 1: The key is going to be can they stop that
- 34:23Speaker 1: two-headed monster running attack from Louisville and what Jim– Brom
- 34:27Speaker 1: can put together.
- 34:28Speaker 2: As a game plan.
- 34:28Speaker 3: I mean, Isaac Brown led the FBS in yards per
- 34:33Speaker 3: carry 8.8 last year.
- 34:34Speaker 2: So they do have explosive running backs.
- 34:36Speaker 4: But I think it's going to be on the offensive
- 34:37Speaker 4: side where you're like, maybe they miss Lane a little bit.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Maybe they miss Charlie Weiss Jr.
- 34:41Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 34:42Speaker 4: And then my storyline, unfortunately, and I don't want this storyline,
- 34:46Speaker 4: but I think it's going to be there how few
- 34:47Speaker 4: close games are going to get week one. I think
- 34:49Speaker 4: at the end, a lot of people are going to
- 34:50Speaker 4: be like, week one just did not give us many
- 34:52Speaker 4: close games i.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Hope i'm wrong well i'm gonna ask lance the great
- 34:55Speaker 1: storylines from everybody there lance i want to ask you
- 34:58Speaker 1: because this is one of those weekends if i was
- 35:01Speaker 1: going to go to hard rock bets and and place
- 35:03Speaker 1: the wagers how do you how do you handle because
- 35:06Speaker 1: i've got a stat for you here kirby smart has
- 35:09Speaker 1: never in his whole time at georgia he has never
- 35:13Speaker 1: covered A 40-plus.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Point point spread. I saw that.
- 35:16Speaker 4: In his time at Georgia. He's never done that. And
- 35:18Speaker 4: I think it's like 15-1-1. Like he said, 17 chances,
- 35:20Speaker 4: only one of them has pushed. Or it's 0-15-1, I
- 35:24Speaker 4: should say. 16 chances, only one of them has pushed.
- 35:26Speaker 4: It's a big number.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm looking at Georgia this weekend, and they're
- 35:29Speaker 1: 46-and-a-half point favorites at home to Tennessee State. Do you
- 35:33Speaker 1: just stay away from those games?
- 35:35Speaker 2: Well, that's one of those. How do you play that?
- 35:36Speaker 3: I mean, look, they're putting this on the board, but
- 35:38Speaker 3: I think it's going to be limited on numbers you
- 35:41Speaker 3: can play in that because– That is not a legit
- 35:43Speaker 3: FBS opponent. But there are other games out there. I mean,
- 35:48Speaker 3: you look at the first game to kick off the day.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Indiana is 40 right now over North Texas.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 1: So I had from a. From a guy who looks
- 35:56Speaker 1: at point spreads and stuff, if I was going to
- 35:57Speaker 1: go to hard rock bets, how do you handle that?
- 35:59Speaker 3: I look at what coaches typically do, and you look
- 36:02Speaker 3: at Indiana last year. 16-0, eight wins by 35-plus. I
- 36:06Speaker 3: think he's going to try to build confidence with Josh Huber,
- 36:08Speaker 3: these new running backs. Turbo Richard coming in from Boston College.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I think Kirk Cignetti is going to do Cignetti things, unfortunately,
- 36:16Speaker 2: for Neil Brown. Now on the other sideline for North Texas,
- 36:20Speaker 2: I think he's going to run it up. I mean,
- 36:21Speaker 2: I lay the 40. It depends on the circumstance.
- 36:24Speaker 1: So it's almost coach's reputation, and with a new quarterback,
- 36:28Speaker 1: they may want more seed time so the starters play
- 36:30Speaker 1: a little longer?
- 36:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and the thing that you don't know on the
- 36:33Speaker 3: other side is, like, with everything that Neil Brown's had
- 36:36Speaker 3: to throw together in year one, with everybody leaving that
- 36:39Speaker 3: North Texas mean green and going to Oklahoma State, like,
- 36:42Speaker 3: how did they come together on the other side? You know,
- 36:45Speaker 3: they could be better than advertised.
- 36:46Speaker 9: Right.
- 36:47Speaker 3: So a lot of people in the NIL era and
- 36:49Speaker 3: transfer portal, they like to take the points, especially a
- 36:52Speaker 3: big number like that.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 1: South Carolina, 36 and a half against Kent State.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Iowa's a 31-and-a-half point favorite. I mean, there are a
- 36:59Speaker 2: lot of big numbers out there. Miami, 24-and-a-half on the
- 37:02Speaker 2: road at Stanford.
- 37:04Speaker 3: You know, what Stanford team are you going to get?
- 37:05Speaker 3: The first half, Stanford team, I mean, it was Hawaii,
- 37:09Speaker 3: but they looked good.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that team could play under the number of 24-and-a-half.
- 37:13Speaker 4: But the second half, Stanford team disappeared until they got
- 37:15Speaker 4: that fumble.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Miami looks like they could score at will on the
- 37:17Speaker 2: Stanford team.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Hey, it's game day tomorrow. We've got games tomorrow night
- 37:21Speaker 1: in college football. as we kick off week one, football
- 37:24Speaker 1: on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then one day off,
- 37:29Speaker 1: and then the NFL starts on Wednesday with games on Wednesday, Thursday,
- 37:33Speaker 1: and then we're back into the college for week two.
- 37:35Speaker 2: It's off and rolling. We are, too.
- 37:37Speaker 1: We talk to the ACC Network and Clemson star Eric
- 37:39Speaker 1: McLean when we come back on the next round, presented
- 37:42Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bets right here on Sporting State. Eric
- 37:45Speaker 1: McLean joins us in a second. By the way, bad
- 37:48Speaker 1: news in basketball when we get to that part of
- 37:50Speaker 1: the year. Michigan lost a five-star freshman superstar Brandon McCoy
- 37:54Speaker 1: this week. Blows out an ACL he's done for the year.
- 37:58Speaker 1: So a big blow for defending national champs Michigan with
- 38:02Speaker 1: a new coaching staff. So should be fun to watch
- 38:05Speaker 1: them try to do it after Dusty May, but that
- 38:08Speaker 1: injury is not going to help as they do that.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Tell us about Our friends at Clay Travis Law, and
- 38:14Speaker 1: we'll get to Eric McLean here in a second.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Yeah, accidents don't wait for a good time. One bad moment,
- 38:19Speaker 3: a wreck, a fall, a doctor who wasn't paying attention,
- 38:21Speaker 3: and suddenly you're fighting an insurance company that does this
- 38:25Speaker 3: every single day. That's why Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 38:28Speaker 3: He built a firm around one idea. People deserve someone
- 38:31Speaker 3: willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions, and push
- 38:34Speaker 3: back when things don't add up. Experienced trial attorneys who
- 38:37Speaker 3: bring the fight to corporations and insurers are based in Nashville,
- 38:41Speaker 3: trusted across the country. They lead negotiations with honesty, determination,
- 38:45Speaker 3: and some Southern grit. Here's what they promise.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Honesty.
- 38:48Speaker 3: They don't sugarcoat your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth,
- 38:51Speaker 3: not what you want to hear. The case evaluation is free.
- 38:54Speaker 3: No charge, no pressure, no hassle. Just tell them your story.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Go to ClayTravisLaw.com. Call 877-222-4444. That's ClayTravisLaw.com. No case too
- 39:05Speaker 3: big or too small.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Man, did you see Tennessee yesterday? They unveiled their jersey patch.
- 39:10Speaker 1: First Horizon Bank. $ 12 million a year, a 10-year $ 120
- 39:17Speaker 1: million deal from First Horizon Bank. And that just blows
- 39:21Speaker 1: the Big 12 monster energy for the whole league out of.
- 39:25Speaker 4: The water, man. Well, I tell you, I don't run
- 39:27Speaker 4: a bank, but I just wonder how many new accounts
- 39:29Speaker 4: have to open.
- 39:30Speaker 2: For $ 12 million a year to make sense.
- 39:31Speaker 4: I mean, that's a lot.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Or if Cody Campbell shifts some dollars over, right? But
- 39:36Speaker 2: he's in Tennessee, so you'd want to.
- 39:38Speaker 4: Your version of Jim Haslam. You want Haslam and Pilot?
- 39:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I mean, what if Haslam went to First Horizon and said,
- 39:44Speaker 4: I'll move all my banking here if you'll do the patch?
- 39:46Speaker 2: They would do the patch. They would do the patch
- 39:48Speaker 2: in a heartbeat.
- 39:49Speaker 1: More likely it was, hey, all of our money is
- 39:51Speaker 1: already here. You need to do the patch or I'm
- 39:53Speaker 1: going to move all my money out somewhere else.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It's not an obnoxiously large patch. I'll say that.
- 39:58Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 39:59Speaker 2: It blends in with the uniform as well.
- 40:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:01Speaker 4: All right, let's talk a little Clemson and ACC. Eric McLean,
- 40:04Speaker 4: you see him on the ACC Network every single week
- 40:09Speaker 4: with a lot of our friends there. Taylor Tannenbaum, Coach Rick,
- 40:12Speaker 4: all the people there.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Jimbo. Jimbo! Jimbo's there now. What is up, Eric? Welcome in.
- 40:16Speaker 2: How are you today?
- 40:18Speaker 5: I'm living the dream. We are here. It is the
- 40:21Speaker 5: real game week. And we're ready to freaking get kicked off, brother.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Listen, are you a proud American, man? I'm going to
- 40:27Speaker 2: ask you, are you a proud American?
- 40:29Speaker 5: These colors don't run, baby. I love it.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I love it.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Let's start with your alma mater, the place you fought
- 40:39Speaker 4: and bled and sweated with Clemson, and they are on
- 40:42Speaker 4: the road at LSU. We've talked about it a lot
- 40:44Speaker 4: in the offseason. I like Clemson in this spot because
- 40:48Speaker 4: all the focus is on LSU, all the stories on LSU.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Marty Smith reporting today, highest credential volume with media and
- 40:54Speaker 4: celebrities that they've ever had at Tiger Stadium. And who's
- 40:58Speaker 4: laying in the weeds right there but little old Clemson.
- 41:01Speaker 5: Little Clemson. That's where they are. Yeah, and it's going
- 41:04Speaker 5: to be a fun matchup, man. Listen, I wish it
- 41:06Speaker 5: was a ranked-on-ranked game. Wish it had a little bit
- 41:09Speaker 5: more juice from that aspect. But it's as big as
- 41:13Speaker 5: it gets. Game day's there. All the little fun shows
- 41:16Speaker 5: that ESPN has added in the last couple of months
- 41:18Speaker 5: are going to be there. As you just mentioned, the credentials.
- 41:21Speaker 5: It's going to be nuts. Thanks for telling me that.
- 41:24Speaker 5: I didn't know what I'd be walking into today. Once
- 41:26Speaker 5: I eventually get there, but just seeing this matchup, right.
- 41:29Speaker 5: Kind of old school versus new school way of thinking,
- 41:32Speaker 5: you know, Lane Kiffin comes in and all the drama
- 41:34Speaker 5: that comes with that bringing about 20, 30 new guys.
- 41:38Speaker 5: And then you've got Dabo who's just steady Eddie and
- 41:42Speaker 5: does things, you know, his way and the way that
- 41:44Speaker 5: he thinks is best for Clemson. And they did go
- 41:46Speaker 5: to the portal, which is nice, but primarily it's homegrown
- 41:50Speaker 5: high school guys. And in a way of thinking there's
- 41:52Speaker 5: matchups galore, everywhere you look of NFL talent, of superstar talent.
- 41:57Speaker 5: I know Coach Sweeney said there's a lot of nobodies
- 42:00Speaker 5: on this team, but he's just playing that game. There
- 42:03Speaker 5: are stars all over this Clemson depth chart.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Dabo is obviously a polarizing guy, but two national championships,
- 42:09Speaker 3: nine ACC championships. We had an intern last year that
- 42:13Speaker 3: was a Clemson grad, and she was like, I'm ready
- 42:15Speaker 3: for Dabo to be done.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And you know there is I.
- 42:18Speaker 11: Know what's her name fire her ass fire her ass
- 42:22Speaker 11: she was an intern we can't fire interns it's free
- 42:24Speaker 11: labor but coming off of seven and six like what
- 42:27Speaker 11: is the expectation you mentioned unranked I mean it's just
- 42:30Speaker 11: amazing to see where Dabo has had this program and
- 42:33Speaker 11: they're unranked going into the season.
- 42:35Speaker 3: But a realistic expectation for Clemson when you look at
- 42:38Speaker 3: the schedule it's it's it's a very doable schedule.
- 42:42Speaker 5: Yeah no no no question um you know I think
- 42:44Speaker 5: it's uh you know, unranked by, you know, a bunch
- 42:47Speaker 5: of media people that can't wait to get Dabo out. Like,
- 42:50Speaker 5: that's the funny thing. I mean, they were ranked in
- 42:51Speaker 5: the coaches poll. They're ranked in FPI. They're ranked in
- 42:54Speaker 5: everything else that uses metrics and logic, not just opinions
- 42:58Speaker 5: of how they want to get somebody gone. But, you know,
- 43:01Speaker 5: the expectation is still to compete for championships. I mean,
- 43:04Speaker 5: that just doesn't change. These guys were just winning an
- 43:06Speaker 5: ACC championship just in the college football playoff two years ago.
- 43:10Speaker 5: And there's no getting around. There's no question. That was
- 43:13Speaker 5: one of the most disappointing seasons ever. four Clemson and
- 43:16Speaker 5: four Coach Dabo Sweeney with all the talent that they had,
- 43:19Speaker 5: nine guys drafted, a handful of first-rounders. It's unacceptable. You
- 43:24Speaker 5: cannot do that. You have to be able to do better,
- 43:26Speaker 5: and I'm sure there's a ton of reasons why that
- 43:29Speaker 5: kind of happened here, but the most important part is
- 43:31Speaker 5: you learn from it and you move on from it,
- 43:33Speaker 5: and now you get it kind of going here. I
- 43:35Speaker 5: mentioned the talent that's on this team. I would take
- 43:37Speaker 5: this wide receiver core against anybody in the country. I
- 43:40Speaker 5: look at Will Held, the best defensive end in the conference.
- 43:44Speaker 5: Sammy Brown, I think, the best linebacker in the country.
- 43:48Speaker 5: And then Ashton Hampton, probably going to end up being
- 43:50Speaker 5: a first-round draft pick. There are stars throughout this team,
- 43:54Speaker 5: and there is no excuse that these guys shouldn't win
- 43:58Speaker 5: nine-plus games.
- 44:00Speaker 1: After spanking Alabama in 2018, and you changed quarterbacks after
- 44:05Speaker 1: Trevor leaves and all of that, has the quarterback play
- 44:08Speaker 1: lived up to what you had before when you were
- 44:10Speaker 1: a national championship contender? And where does Vazina... fit in
- 44:14Speaker 1: with all of that? How good of a quarterback can
- 44:16Speaker 1: he be this year?
- 44:17Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I think it's fairly obvious that it hasn't.
- 44:21Speaker 5: I mean, you see DJU and the things that he did.
- 44:24Speaker 5: Funny enough, he actually won a ton. I mean, that
- 44:26Speaker 5: guy only lost, I think, four or five games at Clemson.
- 44:30Speaker 5: It just happened to be very impactful games that meant
- 44:33Speaker 5: a lot. But when you see what he was able
- 44:35Speaker 5: to do, not quite get the offense to where it
- 44:37Speaker 5: needed to be, you saw the lack of success that
- 44:39Speaker 5: he had obviously at Florida State as well, one of
- 44:42Speaker 5: their worst seasons, actually their worst season ever. And then
- 44:46Speaker 5: Cade and the ups and downs of Cade, you know,
- 44:48Speaker 5: gets in, wins an ACC championship as a true freshman,
- 44:52Speaker 5: has a abysmal turnover year as a sophomore, junior year,
- 44:56Speaker 5: gets right back, wins an ACC championship, plays a heck
- 44:59Speaker 5: of a game against Texas at Texas in a college
- 45:02Speaker 5: football playoff game, and then just kind of falls flat
- 45:05Speaker 5: and regresses a little bit. as they go into their
- 45:08Speaker 5: senior year and the expectation that was placed upon him.
- 45:11Speaker 5: So I don't think there's any question from the first
- 45:13Speaker 5: overall pick, Trevor Lawrence, one of the greatest prospects ever.
- 45:16Speaker 5: It has been a little bit downhill from there. And
- 45:19Speaker 5: Vazina is certainly not in that category of greatest of
- 45:23Speaker 5: all time, but he's got a chip on his shoulder.
- 45:25Speaker 5: He's an older guy that believes in this program. And
- 45:28Speaker 5: I think what's going to be really interesting to see, guys,
- 45:31Speaker 5: is how much does Culture and camaraderie matter because all
- 45:35Speaker 5: that I have heard coming out of this camp, coming
- 45:37Speaker 5: out of that locker room, is that he has galvanized
- 45:40Speaker 5: this team. He has brought them together that maybe the
- 45:43Speaker 5: previous quarterback wasn't able to do. What does that equate to?
- 45:46Speaker 5: Does that equate to a bunch of wins? Does that
- 45:48Speaker 5: equate to a bunch of stats and points? We will see.
- 45:52Speaker 5: But I know that that trust is certainly there from
- 45:55Speaker 5: this team and from his fellow teammates.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Eric McLean with us on the show. You can follow
- 46:00Speaker 4: him on social media at Eric McLean. You'll see him
- 46:03Speaker 4: on the ACC Network all season long. Let's talk about
- 46:06Speaker 4: the rest.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Of the ACC.
- 46:08Speaker 4: They're in Miami as obviously a team everyone is talking about,
- 46:11Speaker 4: not just as an ACC contender, but as a national
- 46:13Speaker 4: championship contender. You know, this is just reality. And then
- 46:18Speaker 4: these are just talking heads talking. But we've mentioned on
- 46:20Speaker 4: this show several times that if there weren't that last
- 46:22Speaker 4: minute swap and Miami got in the playoffs last year,
- 46:25Speaker 4: Mario Cristobal might be on some of these hot seat discussions.
- 46:28Speaker 4: It's crazy how that flip for him, just that one
- 46:30Speaker 4: postseason run, in a lot of ways, flipped a lot
- 46:33Speaker 4: of people's entire image about that program right now and
- 46:36Speaker 4: about Mario Cristobal.
- 46:38Speaker 5: Well, I think it was fascinating that we were having
- 46:42Speaker 5: those conversations. I thought Miami should have. comfortably been in,
- 46:45Speaker 5: especially when you see some other teams ahead of them
- 46:48Speaker 5: that not only they played and beat, but some other
- 46:51Speaker 5: teams that got manhandled in this playoff as well and
- 46:55Speaker 5: had an early exit. So when you look at this team,
- 46:57Speaker 5: how they're constructed, man, I mean, it's as good as
- 47:00Speaker 5: it gets. It's a well-oiled machine that is not slowing
- 47:03Speaker 5: down from NIL, from transfer portal, from high school recruiting.
- 47:07Speaker 5: It is just star after star, talented guy after talented guy.
- 47:12Speaker 5: I mean, they have like five or six, five stars
- 47:14Speaker 5: committed in this next incoming class. I mean, that's insane
- 47:17Speaker 5: when you look at the production that Miami is going
- 47:19Speaker 5: to continue to bring in. They built it from the
- 47:22Speaker 5: inside out, you know, had three first rounders on the
- 47:25Speaker 5: line of scrimmage a year ago, look to have two
- 47:28Speaker 5: or three first rounders on this team as well in
- 47:30Speaker 5: this next upcoming draft here. So I'm pretty high on
- 47:34Speaker 5: Miami as well. I think they are good enough to
- 47:37Speaker 5: win a national championship. I actually think they're the best
- 47:39Speaker 5: team in the country. And that's going to be on
- 47:41Speaker 5: display Friday night. I don't think there's any easing into
- 47:45Speaker 5: the season. I don't think there's any, well, we got
- 47:46Speaker 5: to get our quarterback to figure this out. I think
- 47:49Speaker 5: Miami hits the ground running in a big way at
- 47:52Speaker 5: Stanford Friday night.
- 47:53Speaker 3: So Tony Elliott, 11 wins in his first three seasons,
- 47:56Speaker 3: 11 wins last year.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I've been on them all summer, though, Eric.
- 48:01Speaker 3: I have said this Virginia team is going to be
- 48:03Speaker 3: dangerous because of what they've got up front.
- 48:05Speaker 2: And you look– you play the position.
- 48:07Speaker 3: You look at how much experience is on that offensive
- 48:11Speaker 3: line and how they push NC State around.
- 48:13Speaker 2: First, your take on Virginia, how good can they be?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Can they be that team that possibly plays Miami or
- 48:19Speaker 3: Clemson for an ACC championship? And on the other side,
- 48:22Speaker 3: as bad as C.J. Bailey was– They've got one of
- 48:25Speaker 3: these manageable schedules. Do you see them bouncing back, NC State?
- 48:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:31Speaker 5: So just on Virginia, yeah, man, I'm with you. I
- 48:33Speaker 5: think they're going to be good. And it was one
- 48:35Speaker 5: of those things we just kind of needed to see
- 48:37Speaker 5: Perbula and what he was going to bring to the team.
- 48:40Speaker 5: You kind of thought, but coming back from an injury
- 48:42Speaker 5: and a guy's moved around a bunch, you just didn't know, okay,
- 48:46Speaker 5: is he going to be able to execute and be
- 48:48Speaker 5: his best version of himself. Check the box in the
- 48:50Speaker 5: first game. Yes, we saw that. If he can do
- 48:53Speaker 5: that every game or something close to it, Virginia is
- 48:56Speaker 5: going to be very good. The quarterback run is the
- 48:59Speaker 5: greatest equalizer, right? It gets you going. It gets you
- 49:02Speaker 5: off balance, throws a number game at you that you're
- 49:05Speaker 5: not used to, has that extra blocking, has that extra blocker,
- 49:08Speaker 5: and it changes angles for the defense that you're not
- 49:11Speaker 5: typically used to because where the ball is being ran from.
- 49:14Speaker 5: So You add in an offensive line with two seventh-year guys,
- 49:18Speaker 5: two sixth-year guys, and a fifth-year guy. yeah, those boys
- 49:22Speaker 5: are a little bit more mature than most people in
- 49:24Speaker 5: college football. They've started a lot of games, 135 games
- 49:28Speaker 5: combined from those five guys, and they're good. I mean,
- 49:31Speaker 5: they're really good players. I tell you the piece that
- 49:35Speaker 5: is maybe still the jury's a little bit out. I
- 49:36Speaker 5: need to see more before I make some big massive
- 49:40Speaker 5: proclamation is this secondary might be elite. NC State could
- 49:45Speaker 5: not get open. NC State was running all kinds of concepts,
- 49:49Speaker 5: and there were no answers because of what that secondary provided,
- 49:52Speaker 5: because how sticky and anticipating throws the defense was on
- 49:56Speaker 5: making plays. Again, I need to see more before I
- 49:59Speaker 5: sit here and say that's one of the best secondaries
- 50:01Speaker 5: in the ACC, but a very good start and a
- 50:04Speaker 5: very stingy start for this Virginia team and Virginia defense.
- 50:08Speaker 5: So sure, absolutely think that they can go as far
- 50:11Speaker 5: as they want to in this conference and in this
- 50:13Speaker 5: potential playoff run that they hope to have. Now on
- 50:16Speaker 5: the NC State side, I like the way you phrased it,
- 50:19Speaker 5: very favorable schedule. Very much so something that, okay, we
- 50:23Speaker 5: had a wake-up call, didn't look like what we want
- 50:25Speaker 5: it to look like. How do we get it back?
- 50:27Speaker 5: How do we get it going? Our quarterback had his
- 50:29Speaker 5: worst game that he's ever had in this uniform. Was
- 50:32Speaker 5: that because guys couldn't get open? Was that a little
- 50:35Speaker 5: bit reading press clippings and Cam Newton saying I'm a
- 50:37Speaker 5: top five quarterback and Eric McLean giving me all these flowers? Maybe.
- 50:41Speaker 5: We'll see. But if you can get back and go
- 50:43Speaker 5: to work, do your thing, I still like this team.
- 50:47Speaker 5: I still love C.J. Bailey and think that he's a
- 50:49Speaker 5: heck of a player. I was concerned with the defense, though.
- 50:52Speaker 5: We'll see if Virginia is just that good and this
- 50:55Speaker 5: defense had a bad day. or if that's going to
- 50:57Speaker 5: be more of the same, unfortunately, for the NC State defense.
- 51:00Speaker 1: I know Taylor Tannenbaum would kick me in the knee
- 51:02Speaker 1: for the way I'm going to phrase this, but in
- 51:04Speaker 1: the South, the perception always is the ACC is a
- 51:07Speaker 1: little bit of a little brother to the SEC, right?
- 51:10Speaker 1: But last year, what Miami did in the playoffs to
- 51:12Speaker 1: the SEC, and now you've got an opportunity with Louisville
- 51:15Speaker 1: Ole Miss this weekend. How important are those ACC-SEC matchups
- 51:19Speaker 1: to the conference perception right now in college football?
- 51:23Speaker 5: Yeah, well, and listen, it is what it is, right?
- 51:25Speaker 5: You've got to win it on the field, and then
- 51:26Speaker 5: those narratives over time can start to change. There's a
- 51:29Speaker 5: reason that it is that way. The ACC had the
- 51:32Speaker 5: leg up a year ago over the SEC. We'll see
- 51:35Speaker 5: if that continues in regards to when these teams play.
- 51:37Speaker 5: But you're right. That's one of the things that I
- 51:40Speaker 5: think has held this conference back for the last couple
- 51:43Speaker 5: of years from taking that next step and obviously having
- 51:47Speaker 5: more teams in the prominent rankings is, You see only
- 51:50Speaker 5: three ACC teams ranked in the preseason AP poll there.
- 51:54Speaker 5: You have to win them. It's vital for Colorado and
- 51:57Speaker 5: Georgia Tech, for Clemson LSU, for, as you mentioned, Louisville
- 52:01Speaker 5: and Ole Miss. Go win them and you start to
- 52:04Speaker 5: change things. You start to change that narrative. Certainly Miami
- 52:07Speaker 5: was able to do that a year ago for this conference.
- 52:10Speaker 5: 5-0 against the SEC. Had a very difficult playoff run
- 52:14Speaker 5: and just marched straight to their home field for a
- 52:16Speaker 5: national championship appearance. more of that is certainly what this
- 52:21Speaker 5: conference needs.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Eric, I will say this as you go. Scott Forrester,
- 52:25Speaker 4: our director of video and content and many, many, many,
- 52:28Speaker 4: many other things, says you have the cleanest Zoom setup.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Did you say, Scott, it's the cleanest you've ever seen?
- 52:34Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying?
- 52:35Speaker 6: It is definitely among the best looking Zoom shots we've
- 52:40Speaker 6: ever had.
- 52:41Speaker 2: There you go. Well done by you. Thank you.
- 52:44Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 52:45Speaker 2: It's it's just it's awesome we.
- 52:47Speaker 4: We do about man we've done about a thousand of
- 52:50Speaker 4: these so you rank very very high in a large group.
- 52:52Speaker 5: That means a lot let me give you some inside
- 52:54Speaker 5: scoop my daddy and i did all of this together
- 52:56Speaker 5: we built this room out so that that means a lot.
- 52:58Speaker 4: That's great that is really cool yeah great well done
- 53:01Speaker 4: well done it looks good all right go follow eric

- 53:16Speaker 5: Appreciate you guys so much.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Great to see you. USA. USA. USA. See you, Eric.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Eric McLean with us on the show. Like him. Love
- 53:25Speaker 2: that setup, too. Scott's right. It's a good background.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Hey, when we come back, you know, we joke with
- 53:31Speaker 1: our friends from ESPN all the time about all these
- 53:33Speaker 1: talk shows in the morning, first take and get up
- 53:35Speaker 1: and all that. It's cowboys, cowboys, cowboys, cowboys. They have
- 53:39Speaker 1: gotten into a rut about Alabama and DeBoer, Alabama and DeBoer.
- 53:43Speaker 1: We'll talk about that when we come back and how
- 53:46Speaker 1: there's probably a misconception about DeBoer's stability in Tuscaloosa. We'll
- 53:52Speaker 1: get to that in the next segment and a lot
- 53:54Speaker 1: more college football and our NFL division pick all still
- 53:58Speaker 1: to come right here on the next round presented by
- 54:00Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bets here on Sporting Staked.
