- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:36This is what the end times are going to look like.
- 0:39It's going to have these deceptive people who appear to
- 0:42be godly, but there's no relationship whatsoever.
- 0:47And he says, Paul says now from these people, turn away, turn
- 0:52away from these people, have no fellowship.
- 0:55Have no fellowship with these people.
- 0:57You got to turn away from them because they can be seductive,
- 1:01they can be deceiving, they can be luring, so you need to turn
- 1:05away from them. There's a lot of talk about
- 1:08staying away from toxic people, but then the generally accepted
- 1:11definition of toxic seems to be people who disagree with you.
- 1:17But what if there were people out there who make you feel
- 1:19good, but really they're drawing you away from God?
- 1:23As Pastor Lewis points out in today's message, those are the
- 1:27type of people you need to stay away from.
- 1:30The Bible says not to have any kind of fellowship with those
- 1:33who say they're of God, but their fruit tells another story.
- 1:38Now here's Pastor Lewis in Second Timothy Chapter 3 with
- 1:42today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:45They have a form of godliness, and this form of godliness
- 1:48actually means that it's a they have a shape of godliness or
- 1:51semblance of godliness. They have an appearance of
- 1:54godliness, but there's no fruit, there's no substance, there's
- 1:59nothing, there's no life on the inside.
- 2:02It's just a shell of an appearance of godliness.
- 2:07It's an imitator of godly people without the power.
- 2:13So it's like profession without practice, without no
- 2:16relationship whatsoever. And this is what Paul is saying.
- 2:21Paul is saying these people are going to look righteous, they're
- 2:24going to look holy, they're going to look religious, but
- 2:26they won't have the Redeemer. They will not have that
- 2:29relationship with the Lord. None.
- 2:33These are people who Jesus is talking about over in Matthew 7
- 2:38when he says that they're going to be many that are going to
- 2:40come to me and say Lord, Lord. But everybody who comes to me
- 2:44saying Lord, Lord will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.
- 2:47Oh, but they're going to put up the argument.
- 2:48Lord, didn't you know? You know, didn't we Prophecy in
- 2:51your name did not cast out demons in your name did not do
- 2:55many wonders in your name. And he's going to say depart
- 2:59from me. I never knew you, depart from
- 3:01me. You who work lawlessness, Yes,
- 3:05you had an outward shell. You had a appearance of
- 3:08godliness, but there was never relationship.
- 3:11I never knew you. There was never relationship and
- 3:14that's exactly what we're going to see in the last days.
- 3:18These teachers, these false teachers that are going to have
- 3:22this appearance of godliness. They're going to sound godly,
- 3:26but their lives have no fruit. They're going to be just like
- 3:31Jesus talked about over in Matthew chapter 23 when he
- 3:36talked about the woes over in Matthew 23.
- 3:39And there's two woes in particular that just gives me
- 3:42the chills that he talks about. And he basically saying chapter
- 3:4625, verse 23, what are you scribes and Pharisees,
- 3:49hypocrites for? You cleanse the outside of the
- 3:52cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self
- 3:57indulgence. And that's exactly what these
- 3:59false teachers will be. They'll be full of self
- 4:03indulgence. Everything that they're
- 4:05teaching, everything that they're doing is for selfish
- 4:08gain. The Bible says they're feeding
- 4:11their own bellies. And then in verse 27 in the same
- 4:14chapter, he says, woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
- 4:17hypocrites, for you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed
- 4:22appear beautifully beautiful outwardly.
- 4:24And I remember Clark telling us that he was in Israel and he
- 4:29stood up on the hill and he saw these whitewashed tombs and how
- 4:33they glittered in the sunlight and how beautiful they looked in
- 4:38the sunlight. He said that's exactly what
- 4:40these false teachers are going to be like.
- 4:42Like these whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful
- 4:46outwardly, but inside are full of dead man's bones and awe,
- 4:52uncleanness, awe, uncleanness. This is what the end times are
- 4:59going to look like. It's going to have these
- 5:00deceptive people who appear to be godly, but there's no
- 5:05relationship whatsoever. And he says, Paul says now from
- 5:10these people, turn away, turn away from these people, have no
- 5:14fellowship. Have no fellowship with these
- 5:17people. You got to turn away from them
- 5:19because they can be seductive, they can be deceiving, they can
- 5:23be luring. So you need to turn away from
- 5:26them. You need to break fellowship
- 5:27with these people and have no further fellowship with them,
- 5:30neither inside the church or outside the church.
- 5:32He, you know, they actually mean to shun the people or to avoid
- 5:36these people, but we treat them like unbelievers.
- 5:40So we pray for them. We pray for them, we minister to
- 5:45them. We don't just throw them away.
- 5:47We don't just, we don't put, we don't talk about them and, and
- 5:51put them down. We pray for them.
- 5:54We pray that God would touch their hearts and that they would
- 5:57and that they would turn from these things.
- 6:00We intercede on their behalf, understanding that they are
- 6:04taken captive by Satan. They're being used by Satan.
- 6:09So we pray for them. And then he goes further.
- 6:12And he said for of this sort are those who creep into households,
- 6:17they creep into households that mean.
- 6:19And, and what that probably means is that because they were
- 6:23told to not have fellowship with these people, these false
- 6:26teachers and these unbelievers who you know, who, who, who show
- 6:30these kind of characteristics, these people are probably
- 6:33they're not invited into the fellowship of the believers.
- 6:37So they don't have access to the believers.
- 6:40You know, they don't stand in the Congregation of the
- 6:42Righteous. So these people creep into homes
- 6:48and make their way or get access into homes of vulnerable people
- 6:53who will listen to what it is that they have to say.
- 6:56And, and, and what it says here is that they go into households
- 7:00and make captives because in a spiritual war, just like in a
- 7:03regular war, there's always captives.
- 7:06In a regular war, there's captives, people who get
- 7:08captive. But also that way for the, the,
- 7:12the, in a spiritual war, they're captives.
- 7:14People are taken captive. And he's saying that these they
- 7:17take captives of these gullible women.
- 7:21And just because it says, when I want to clarify this, just
- 7:24because it says gullible women, that doesn't necessarily mean
- 7:27he's talking about all women. He's not saying that all women
- 7:30are gullible. We know that that's not true.
- 7:32All women are not gullible. But what he is saying that these
- 7:35are prompt is a section of people or a group of women that
- 7:39was obviously identified that these false prophets had gone
- 7:44into. These are women who were weak.
- 7:47They were his a weak self will. They had no self will.
- 7:51They're women who were not grounded and they went in
- 7:54because they were gullible. Now there's, there's four things
- 7:57that Paul mentions here that makes these women a target for
- 8:03these false teachers. The one thing he mentioned, he
- 8:05said they're gullible. They're gullible women.
- 8:09That means they listened. They're open to everything.
- 8:12They're open to everything. They're willing to believe
- 8:14anything that sounds good. I remember when I was young, I
- 8:19heard a pastor once say, it's amazing what you remember when
- 8:22you're young sitting in a congregation.
- 8:23But the the pastor once said, he said if you don't stand for
- 8:27something, you will fall for anything.
- 8:29And I never forgot that. I never forgot that.
- 8:32And that's exactly what's going on here.
- 8:34These women didn't stand for Christ.
- 8:36They didn't stand for truth, they didn't stand for true
- 8:39doctrine. So they were willing to fall for
- 8:41anything. And that's exactly what happened
- 8:44with these particular women. So the first things that they
- 8:46were gullible women. The second thing is that they
- 8:47were loaded down with sins. So these are women who were
- 8:51given to their own passions. They were given to their sinful
- 8:54ways. They would rather those sins
- 8:55were sexual sins, or rather it was, you know, sins of being
- 8:59busy bodies or gossipers, sins of just being involved in
- 9:03things, self sync, satisfying sins.
- 9:06But they were loaded down with sin.
- 9:08Not just sinful, they were loaded down with sins.
- 9:11Sin is a burden. Sin is a burden by the way, it
- 9:15does weigh you down. It weighs you down.
- 9:19It causes you to feel like you're carrying something extra
- 9:23on you like in your life, and you are.
- 9:25You're carrying these burdens with you.
- 9:27And that's why when we get saved, we feel so light.
- 9:30When we give our lives to Christ, we feel so light because
- 9:33we relieve those burdens. Did we drop those burdens?
- 9:36We give them all to him. The sin, you know, the burden
- 9:39bearer, we give them to the burden bear instead of us
- 9:42bearing them, the burden bear takes them.
- 9:44And that's why we feel so light when we get saved.
- 9:47Do you remember that when you first got saved, how you just
- 9:49felt so light? Everything outside looks so much
- 9:52brighter. You look in the grass and look
- 9:54greener. Flowers look more beautiful.
- 9:56The sky look bluer. You know you're smiling at
- 9:59everybody and talking to everybody because you were just
- 10:02so free. You were.
- 10:04You were, you were. You were free from those burdens
- 10:07that once used to bound you. And these women are loaded down
- 10:12with these sins also #3 they're LED away by various lusts.
- 10:17So not just sexual lusts, but it could also be other lusts, like
- 10:21the lust for things, lust for money, lust for jewelry, or
- 10:25whatever it may be. But they're LED away by those
- 10:28things. And those are the things that
- 10:29control their passions. And then #4 is that they're
- 10:33always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of
- 10:38truth. In other words, these women are
- 10:40always running somewhere looking for a fresh word.
- 10:44And I've seen that, you know, people will go from church to
- 10:47church, following speakers to go from church to church looking
- 10:51for a fresh word, looking for a word that satisfies their flesh,
- 10:56something that will tickle their ears, something that will
- 11:00justify the lifestyle that they're living.
- 11:03So they go from place to place searching, but they never come
- 11:08to the knowledge of the truth. They never come to the knowledge
- 11:12of the gospel. They never receive or experience
- 11:16the power of the gospel. Regardless of how many services
- 11:19you sit in, regardless of how many speakers you listen to, if
- 11:23you don't accept the truth of the gospel, you will never come
- 11:29to the knowledge of truth. And that's exactly what these
- 11:34women were doing, just searching for the knowledge and never,
- 11:37ever finding any. Just learning.
- 11:39That's the danger of being ignorant of the faith, you know?
- 11:42And that's why Paul, I believe This is why Paul said over in
- 11:45First Timothy 211 that the women should learn, but they just need
- 11:49to learn in silence. But they should learn.
- 11:54They should learn. They should learn the word of
- 11:56God. They should learn the doctrine,
- 11:58but they need to learn in silence.
- 12:01I think Paul was trying to avoid women being vulnerable.
- 12:05And these false teachers take advantage of these women and
- 12:07they fleece them of their money. They fleece them of their
- 12:09loyalty, of their services. Titus, one in 10, says that
- 12:13these these false teachers are teaching things that they ought
- 12:16not for the sake of dishonest gain, for the sake of dishonest
- 12:22gain. And not only do these teachers
- 12:24come from without people who come outside of the church and
- 12:27try to work their way in, but it's also people who were coming
- 12:32from inside the church that raise up, that are raised up to
- 12:36becoming a teacher. And they began to speak things
- 12:40that are outside of the truth and they begin to deceive other
- 12:45people. In fact, Paul warned about that.
- 12:49He warned about that over in the book of Acts, over in the book
- 12:51of Acts. He made it very clear over in
- 12:54chapter 20 of the book of Acts, starting here verse 29.
- 12:58He said, For I know this, that after many that after my
- 13:02departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing
- 13:08the flock also from among yourselves men will rise up
- 13:12speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after
- 13:16themselves. Therefore, watch and remember
- 13:19that for three years I did not cease to warn every night and
- 13:24day with tears. So these are these are the, the
- 13:29people, these false teachers that are teaching perverse
- 13:32things and getting people to follow them, getting people to
- 13:36follow them. And it's going to get even worse
- 13:38as it gets closer to the end time.
- 13:40The Bible says even the very elect may be deceived.
- 13:44And then in verse 8, as we get ready to come closer to a close
- 13:48here in verse 8, he now describes how these false
- 13:51teachers are resistant to truth and how they resist the gospel,
- 13:56how they resist the authority of the Bible.
- 13:58And he gives an example that I think is pretty interesting.
- 14:01He says now verse 8, now as Janice and John Breeze resisted
- 14:06Moses, now you might say, well, what did these names come from?
- 14:09Because if you go back in the book of Exodus, you won't see
- 14:12Jenny's and John Breeze back in the book of Exodus.
- 14:16But Paul, through study, actually through the traditional
- 14:20writings, he was able to discover who these two men were.
- 14:24And he's talking about the two magicians, the two magicians,
- 14:28the Egyptian magicians who stood in front of Moses and resisted
- 14:32him. You know, Moses came to Pharaoh,
- 14:34said, let my people go. They said, no, we're not going
- 14:36to let your people go. Moses stood down or Aaron threw
- 14:39down the rod and, and and it turned into a serpent.
- 14:42And the because they are imitators, because that's what
- 14:46Satan is. He's an imitator.
- 14:48He threw down there did the magician stood down their rod
- 14:50and it turned into a serpent. So of course Pharaoh said, well,
- 14:54there's no need of letting you go because my God can do what
- 14:57your God can do. So then the next thing he said,
- 14:59well, you let my people go. He said, no, I'm not going to
- 15:02let your people go. He turned the Nile River into
- 15:04blood. If you remember that story, he
- 15:07turned the Nile River into blood.
- 15:08And of course, his magicians came right behind him and he
- 15:12turned the Nile River into blood.
- 15:13I'm not going to let you go. Why should I let you go?
- 15:15My God can do what your God can do.
- 15:18Came to the frogs, mostly let my people go.
- 15:20I'm not going to let your people go.
- 15:22I'm going to have frogs going to come and cover the land.
- 15:24Now notice these magicians didn't do anything on their own.
- 15:28They had to imitate after Moses, they couldn't come up and do
- 15:31anything on their own. And that's what Satan does.
- 15:34He doesn't do anything on his own.
- 15:35He's an imitator. He's an imitator.
- 15:38So they brought up frogs. And that's exactly what these
- 15:41false teachers did. They brought up frogs too.
- 15:44I'm not going to let you people go.
- 15:45My gods can do what yours can do.
- 15:47Then it came to the lice. Then it came to the other six
- 15:51plagues that Moses was able, that the Lord did through Moses,
- 15:55and they couldn't duplicate it. They could not duplicate it.
- 15:58They were exposed. In fact, they even said over in
- 16:02Exodus 8 and 19, they said this is the finger of God.
- 16:07They finally realized it after all that time of resisting him
- 16:13by not wanting to believe him, by trying to imitate him.
- 16:18Finally they said this is the finger of God.
- 16:22They realized that. And that's exactly what's going
- 16:25to happen here with Paula saying, Paula saying just as
- 16:28these do as these do, as so do these who resist the truth.
- 16:34And that's exactly what they do. People who always want to
- 16:38challenge the Bible, always want to deny the truths of the Bible.
- 16:43They are resisting the authority of God's word and they're trying
- 16:48to get other people to question it as well.
- 16:51That goes all the way back to the garden.
- 16:53It's exactly what Satan did in the garden, got Eve and Adam
- 16:56tried to get them to, got try to get Eve to question God's word.
- 17:01And that's what happens with these false teachers.
- 17:04They, they, they get out a little bit of truth and the rest
- 17:06of them is a lie and they try to get you to question God's word.
- 17:11Did it really mean this? If that's what the word says it
- 17:14meant, that's what it meant. That's what it means.
- 17:17But they are going to resist. But they're because they're men
- 17:20of corrupt or depraved minds. They're disapproved concerning
- 17:23the faith. In other words, they have false
- 17:25faith, counterfeit faith. It's not real.
- 17:29It's not real, but verse 9 he says, but they will progress no
- 17:34further for their folly will be manifest to all.
- 17:38Yes, going to come to a point where they're going to be
- 17:41exposed. They're not teaching the word of
- 17:44God. They're teaching psychology,
- 17:45they're teaching humanism, they're teaching philosophy.
- 17:48We're hearing so much of that on TV and it's nothing but an
- 17:51imitate. They look like preachers, they
- 17:53look like preachers, they look like they're men of God.
- 17:57They throw a word or two in every now and then to make it
- 17:59sound like they're followers of God, that they're men of God,
- 18:02that they, that they love Jesus Christ.
- 18:05But the truth of the matter is they do not.
- 18:08They're imitators. And, and it's, and they may have
- 18:117 steps to this or seven steps to that, You know, teach you, I
- 18:15can improve your marriage, how to live happy and all those
- 18:18things. But they don't teach about sin.
- 18:20They don't teach about, you know, coming to salvation
- 18:23through Jesus Christ and him being the only way to salvation.
- 18:27They don't teach that. They don't teach that.
- 18:30But we have to understand that faith doesn't come by teaching
- 18:33psychology. It doesn't come by teaching
- 18:34philosophy. Faith comes by hearing and
- 18:38hearing by the word of God according to Romans 10 and 17.
- 18:42Now I have to say, I have to say I've been coming to this church
- 18:45now going on 13 years. We went on 13 years.
- 18:49I've been coming to this church. I have never once seen any man
- 18:54coming to this sacred desk and teach out of anything other than
- 18:59the Bible, men or women that teach.
- 19:02The women over there, they don't teach out of books.
- 19:04They teach out of the word of God because this is the truth.
- 19:08This is the power. This is what changes lives.
- 19:12So here at Calvary Chapel, this is what we do.
- 19:15That's what Ezra did. Ezra just simply, he read the
- 19:19scripture and he explained it. That's what Jesus did.
- 19:22That's what the the, the apostles did.
- 19:25They read the scriptures and they expound on the scriptures.
- 19:29That's the way it's been done and that's the way we do it
- 19:31here. If you're looking for something
- 19:34other than true doctrine, if you don't want to hear about sin, if
- 19:38you don't want to hear about the grace of God, if you don't want
- 19:41to hear about Jesus Christ being the only way, then this is
- 19:44probably not going to be the church for you.
- 19:46If you want to hear something that's going to tickle your
- 19:48ears. If you want to hear something
- 19:49that's going to cause you to feel you know good about
- 19:52yourself. And you never have to look at
- 19:53what the Holy Spirit is doing in your spirit to get you to to
- 19:58obey Him or to get you to walk in a way that will allow you to
- 20:03live a life that is separated unto Him.
- 20:06If that's not what you want, then this is not going to be the
- 20:08place. But as long as we're here, I've
- 20:11always heard the Word of God line by line, chapter by
- 20:15chapter, book by book. And that's the way we'll
- 20:18continue to do it. But those who are not about
- 20:22that, it's going to be exposed. They're going to be exposed.
- 20:24Give it an opportunity to repent, but they're going to be
- 20:27exposed. So This is why it's so important
- 20:30to come and have fellowship. Hebrews tell us that we should
- 20:34not be forsaking and forsaking, not the assembling of ourselves
- 20:38together as is the matter of some, as some are doing, but we
- 20:43need to encourage each other, exhort each other.
- 20:47It's so much more as we see the day approaching, as it gets
- 20:52closer to God, we need to be exhorting each other even more,
- 20:54coming together, encouraging each other.
- 20:57Jews says that we got to contend for the faith, which was once
- 21:00for all one time it was given. There's no new revelation on the
- 21:04faith. One time it was given for all,
- 21:09delivered to the Saints. So even as in these perilous
- 21:12times, we still have hope in these last and evil days, we
- 21:17still have hope. And the hope that we have is in
- 21:20Jesus Christ. He is where we are.
- 21:23We we can hide in Jesus Christ. I have a Psalm that I just want
- 21:28to end with, and it's Psalm 3. It kind of truly talks about how
- 21:33we have to deal with perilous times.
- 21:35This was David dealing with his perilous times.
- 21:38He says, Lord, how they have increased.
- 21:41Who trouble me? Many are they who rise up
- 21:44against me. Many are they who say of me,
- 21:48there is no help for him in God. Now, if it ended there, that
- 21:54would be a sad story. If that was the end of the
- 21:56story, that would be a sad story.
- 21:59But it doesn't, he says. But you, O Lord, are a shield
- 22:02for me. You're my glory.
- 22:05You're the one who lifts up my head.
- 22:08I cried to the Lord with my voice.
- 22:10He heard me from his holy heel. In fact, even in the midst of
- 22:15all the perilous times that David was going through, even in
- 22:18the midst of all the people who were seeking to take his life as
- 22:22he was running for his very life, he was able to say, I laid
- 22:27down and went to sleep. That's the piece that brother
- 22:30had. He laid down and went to sleep.
- 22:32And even in our perilous times, when we have the peace of God
- 22:38with us, in US and for us, we will be able to lie down and
- 22:44sleep, he says. I woke up, for I didn't sustain
- 22:47myself. It wasn't the people around me
- 22:49that sustained me, but the Lord sustained me.
- 22:52I will not be afraid of 10 thousands of people who set
- 22:55themselves against me all around.
- 22:59And then he says, arise, O Lord, save me, Oh my God, for you have
- 23:03struck all my enemies on the cheekbone.
- 23:05You have broken the teeth of the ungodly savage beast.
- 23:09Men who are people who are untamed animals that are
- 23:12untamed, their strength is in their teeth.
- 23:14That's what we fear. We fear the teeth of wild
- 23:17animals. And yet the Lord broke their
- 23:21teeth, cause them to be harmless, defenseless.
- 23:26He broke their teeth. Salvation belongs to the Lord.
- 23:30Your blessing is upon the people.
- 23:33We have a hope, and thank God we do.
- 23:36And that hope that we have is in Jesus Christ and Him alone.
- 23:39He came so that we would have hope.
- 23:41He came to bless us. He came to take for us and to do
- 23:45for us what we couldn't do for ourselves.
- 23:49You've been listening to Pastor Louis Harrell here on Living
- 23:52Waters of Grace. We're digging into all that Paul
- 23:56shared with Timothy in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:00Timothy was commissioned to do the following fight the good
- 24:03fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were
- 24:07also called, and have confessed the good confession in the
- 24:11presence of many witnesses. Timothy would be carrying on
- 24:16what Paul had taught him and continuing on in ministry, even
- 24:20though Paul knew that more hardships would come for
- 24:23Timothy. This is the Christian life.
- 24:26It's not glamorous. It's not some celebrity status.
- 24:31It's hard fought. It's gritty, it's unpopular, but
- 24:35it's worth it. Do you believe that today?
- 24:38Are you willing to fight the good fight even at the cost of
- 24:42earthly pleasures? Living the life of a follower of
- 24:45Jesus will have its heavenly rewards.
