- 1:54knows we don't know where you're from.
- 1:56Anyways, sometimes I think Speedy is an alien.
- 1:58Anyways, this guy is definitely not an alien.
- 2:01He's he's never been on a show. But I have actually met this guy
- 2:06a couple of years ago, a little while ago was in Miami.
- 2:09It was at a cigar event at the Super Bowl.
- 2:13And ladies and gentlemen, we are now talking to former Eagles
- 2:17wide receiver Vince Papali. Vince, what's up, buddy?
- 2:20That's so good, I'm trying to figure out what a fluffy steak
- 2:23is. I haven't quite had one again.
- 2:26It's. Fluffy.
- 2:27Yeah, it's fluffy moo. It's.
- 2:28Fluffy man I every It's a new cook.
- 2:31It's a new way they go. So listen.
- 2:34The new way they grew all. Day long, you know, that's,
- 2:37that's yeah. Listen, when you get to the
- 2:39State House, say ask for it, Fluffy.
- 2:41Fluffy. It's fluffy.
- 2:42Yeah, it's a little. You know what, I've been sitting
- 2:45here for a few minutes, listen to you guys Joan, about the
- 2:47Knicks and and the NBA is it's a beautiful thing.
- 2:51And and I know you had mentioned about I'm not real happy about
- 2:54about the Knicks and beating our 76ers.
- 2:57But there's one thing I am happy about one person and that's Jay
- 3:00Brunson. I'm right now you're, you're
- 3:02listening to me from Mercy, me from Jupiter, FL, but I'm from
- 3:05the Philly area and we lived in a little town across the river
- 3:10on the New Jersey side, Cherry Hill and Jay Brunson and my son
- 3:13Vinny were, were teammates and, and best buddies as they were
- 3:16growing up. And then, then you know, Rick
- 3:19took his, his family and they went, they went elsewhere, but
- 3:22you know, and then he came back to Philly.
- 3:23But you know, he's, he's phenomenal man.
- 3:26And I tell you what you know, good luck to him.
- 3:28And if, if I'm going to root for anybody other than the Sixers in
- 3:31the playoffs, it's going to be the Knicks, I am sure.
- 3:34Now, now I like you even more fans.
- 3:36There's a little there's. A there's a nice kid man, I, you
- 3:38know, I call them, they're all kids to me anymore.
- 3:40You know, when you get as old as I am, you know, he wasn't.
- 3:44And, and just as the kind of person he was.
- 3:46My, my daughter Gabrielle, I used to work as the, the head of
- 3:49live game entertainment. So she she coordinated
- 3:52everything was on the court other than the game itself.
- 3:55So timeouts, but you know, halftime this that the other
- 3:58thing, she was all part of that. And Jay always came up when the
- 4:02next or whatever he was playing for came into Philadelphia and
- 4:05made sure he just walked up to Gabrielle and just to say hi,
- 4:08tell Vinny I said I tell Mister P Coach Pi said I just a great
- 4:12guy. So all good.
- 4:14And hey, our Sixers and our Flyers, all we got left out our
- 4:18Phillies and maybe a half decent draft pick with the Eagles.
- 4:20But who knows? You know, it is what it is.
- 4:23Yeah. It's a sweeping sensation for
- 4:25this year as we've seen the, the Philadelphia Flyers get swept
- 4:29and now we saw the Philadelphia 76ers because they have swept,
- 4:33but there's a team that hasn't gotten swept.
- 4:35As a matter of fact, they won a Super Bowl 2 years ago.
- 4:38But we're not going to get into that.
- 4:39First, I want to get into your movie because IA lot of people
- 4:42that have listened to our show, I, I said we're going to talk to
- 4:45Vince Papali and Vince was the, the voice and the face of the
- 4:51movie Invincible. And if you've never seen it,
- 4:53it's a Disney movie, go check it out.
- 4:55It's on Toby right now. I think you can get it on Toby
- 4:57right now. It's a sensational movie.
- 5:00It's a great story behind who you are as a person and really
- 5:04how you worked your ass off to get to the NFL and a surprise
- 5:09because of a coach. Now I I want you to go into your
- 5:13story in because I think some of the story from the movie was a
- 5:18little bit out there. I mean, it wasn't really fully
- 5:20the full story behind who you are and, and how, how far you
- 5:24went as a football player and and where you became, where you
- 5:28became Vince Papali of the Philadelphia of Philadelphia.
- 5:32I'm sorry, Eagles, by the way, my second favorite team.
- 5:35Anyways, tell us a little bit about that story.
- 5:38Well, you know, when they make a movie, they they want to
- 5:40dramatize a few things and they want to do this, they want to do
- 5:43that. And everybody asks, you know,
- 5:45for, you know, what's Mark Wahlberg like I was, I just came
- 5:48from an event with a Palm Beach, the Italian Americans, you know,
- 5:53and, and, and that's all about doing the charity and everybody
- 5:58wants to know about Mark Wahlberg.
- 6:00And that was one of the number one questions.
- 6:02How true was a movie? Listen, when they make that
- 6:04movie about you and it could be it's it's pretty nuts.
- 6:06And it just came out of nowhere. When they make that movie about
- 6:10you, you better be ready because they, they, they want to,
- 6:13obviously they want to make and make sure they have drama, make
- 6:15sure there's reaction from the stands.
- 6:18And then for the people in the in the theater, I used to go to
- 6:20screenings with the producers and sit in the back and they
- 6:24would play around them with a little bit, you know, with what
- 6:26they're going to do with the final movie to see what they say
- 6:29played, you know, PLAYED, you know, did it play well?
- 6:34And then the second most often asked question is my wife's
- 6:37still a Giants fan. Well, sitting in the other room
- 6:41and and my wife for 33 years, she didn't wear a Giants jersey.
- 6:45She wore that jersey behind me. The greatest 3 numbers there are
- 6:49in the world, letters in the world, the USA.
- 6:52Janet was on the World Olympic gymnastics team back in the 70s
- 6:57and she's coached and taught all over the world.
- 6:59And she she's but what, what happened is we needed the NFL's
- 7:04endorsement and in order so we could use their, their rights
- 7:08with their logo and all those kinds of things.
- 7:10Otherwise we'd be the Philadelphia pigeons or whatever
- 7:13they wanted to do us, you know, with all those movies that were
- 7:15coming out at that time. And they they asked, they they
- 7:19said sort of, you know, if you want our endorsement, we would
- 7:22like, we would like Janet to be a Giants fan and a bartender.
- 7:25And, and in reality, she was a coach at the University of
- 7:28Pennsylvania and, you know, coached all over the world, as I
- 7:30said, and played for USA. So we went with it.
- 7:33It was cool. And I said to her, you know, I
- 7:35said, you don't have to do this. What are you crazy?
- 7:38I mean, Disney is about ready to invest XA $1,000,000 in in this
- 7:41movie and you're going to play around with something like that.
- 7:45Let's go. And, and it worked out pretty
- 7:47good. But you know, to make the Long
- 7:50story short, I wish they had gone back a few years prior
- 7:54because in reality, I, I wasn't, I wasn't a bartender and a
- 7:58substitute teacher. I was at that time because I was
- 8:01playing in the World Football League and that leg had folded.
- 8:04And after four games and I was ready to go back and get my
- 8:08teaching job at my high school alma mater, but it wasn't
- 8:11available. So they gave me a leave of
- 8:12absence. So in the meantime, I had AI
- 8:15did, I was a bartender, substitute teacher.
- 8:18And then Dick Ramille came into town and had that free agent try
- 8:21out and I got a shot. But you know, I, I, I taught in
- 8:24my high school for six years at bright Brighton, suburban
- 8:27Philly, right by the Philly airport.
- 8:29And, and I was working on my master's degree, trying to
- 8:32qualify for Olympic trials, actually in the decathlon and,
- 8:36and playing those rough touch legs, all that stuff you saw
- 8:38with a rough touch. That was all true.
- 8:40Any, any and all the action that you saw in training camp and
- 8:44anything you saw with the players on the field, you know,
- 8:46whether they be the New York Giants or whether it be the
- 8:49Cincinnati Bengals or the Eagles, all those players were,
- 8:53were current and, or were Arena Football League players and, and
- 8:57some were just retired NFL players.
- 9:00And so the contact and the hitting man, it was it was like
- 9:03this and in NFL films in the NFL came up when they saw the final
- 9:07production and they couldn't believe how beautiful it was
- 9:09done and blended and how real it looked.
- 9:12But you know, they, they did a great job and it, and it's it
- 9:14and it's, it's all about, you know, you talk to Rudy or any of
- 9:17those other kinds of movies where they'd make the movie
- 9:19about you. And Rudy's a good buddy of mine,
- 9:22you know, they're, they want to do things that they think are
- 9:24going to play really well in the theater.
- 9:27And most, I would say 80% of it was right on the money.
- 9:31And I helped, I helped with the production of it and the screen
- 9:34writing of it. I didn't have any, I didn't, it
- 9:36wasn't my screen writing, but I did work with a screenwriter.
- 9:39We didn't have Google back then. So, you know, everything was
- 9:43done over the phone or I would send stuff something overnight
- 9:46to, to my screenwriter, Brad Gan, who, who, who had had
- 9:50success in writing some movies. I mean, writing some screenplays
- 9:54became movies. And you know, you go through the
- 9:56process, the guys who were the guys who were the producers or
- 9:59the guys who did miracle. I mean, you know, Miracle,
- 10:02what's the what was the number one movie that we're talking
- 10:04about packing with the Olympics with our USA Hockey team, you
- 10:07know, and the team was for the world championship and, and, and
- 10:11the, and the producer and the executive producer, the guy that
- 10:14funded all the money in the beginning to get this gone was
- 10:17the guy that created America's next model, and that was Ken
- 10:20Walk and Ken Mock. Excuse me.
- 10:23So, you know, it was a cluster was it was a team of everybody
- 10:26together. And it, and it happened with a
- 10:28phone call saying I was going to be compared to Rocky on Monday
- 10:32Night Football to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Rocky.
- 10:37And so it was, it was Ron Jaworski and a great, the, the
- 10:39late great Stuart Scott, you know, Oh yeah, you know, and,
- 10:44and they were messing around and there's this 5 minute feature
- 10:47they were doing. And, you know, and Sylvester
- 10:49Stallone was kind enough to allow us to use some of the some
- 10:53of the film from his movie and comparing me to Rocky because
- 10:56they always call me the real life Rocky.
- 10:58And that that led to the production, the movie.
- 11:00All of a sudden, Hollywood came a calling, and as they say, the
- 11:04rest is history. And I'm talking to you guys, So
- 11:06what could be better than that? I will say this.
- 11:08So you mentioned Stuart Scott and Stuart Scott's 3430 came out
- 11:13and ESPN reached out to me and wanted a piece that I kind of
- 11:17did with New York sports scene and actually got credit for that
- 11:2130 for 30. So for any fan that watch the 30
- 11:24for 30, if you go and look at the back end of it, my name was
- 11:27actually over there as one of the guys from New York sports
- 11:29scene. So that was one thing.
- 11:30And, and Rudy is one of my favorite football movies, but
- 11:34Joe Montana just came out. What was it 2 years ago and said
- 11:37that story is not true? That's, that's, that's a bunch
- 11:40of crap. You know Joe Montana, you know
- 11:42Joe, he, he has his own opinion to every, everything when it
- 11:45comes to Notre Dame. But I wanted to get into some of
- 11:48the crap that we saw during the movie.
- 11:50I, I, I hate when people get picked on.
- 11:52I, I, I don't like bullies. That's one of the thing.
- 11:55When I was a kid, I used to fight and beat up bullies.
- 11:58And when you were trying out for the team and you were trying to
- 12:02make the team and Dick for Meal was testing you and and and the
- 12:06players were testing you, who is giving you the most problems in
- 12:09that locker? Room because you the, the, the
- 12:12actually some of the, well, the defensive backs because they
- 12:15didn't like my sour play because my sour play was is we, we, we,
- 12:20there's a word, you know, a lot of guys when they're wired
- 12:22receivers pregnant will tell us that, you know, if you're a wide
- 12:24receiver, they'll come up and they'll, they'll just put their
- 12:26hands right on your chest. We'll call it a boss block, but
- 12:28you know, it's a little bit more explicit than that.
- 12:31And my style was I would blow a guy up, you know, my, my target
- 12:36was his Belpaco and below. And, and they, they were pissed
- 12:40off, especially in the training camp because you know, I, I
- 12:43anything that moved and I told him, I said, if you're on my way
- 12:45or you're around me and, and, and I'm in, I'm in and it's a
- 12:48contact drill or thought tempo. I'm coming at you full speed.
- 12:51So get out of my way. And they didn't like that and
- 12:55and it went and it and it boiled into the locker room.
- 12:57But you know, eventually after I got into training camp when I
- 13:01wound up leading the team at touchdowns and receptions, which
- 13:03was a little bit different than the way the movie was was
- 13:07portrayed at the right hand that it was, you know, was iffy if I
- 13:09was going to make it. And you know, all these guys
- 13:12became my buds and you know, eventually they all voted me
- 13:15captain of the team. But you know, it's here's what
- 13:18was really cool guys, is Widener College where I was doing what
- 13:22where I was going through training camp was 6 miles from
- 13:26where I grew up, 6 miles from where I went to high school, 6
- 13:30miles from where I taught and coached.
- 13:33And my dad worked at Westinghouse on the river right,
- 13:36right by the Philly airport. So every day, my former
- 13:40students, the guys I was playing rough touch with, the guys I
- 13:43played semi Pro Football for the Aston Knights with, you know, my
- 13:46track guys, my high school guys, The, the, the, the, the, the,
- 13:50the Westinghouse guys, they were all piling in and rooting for
- 13:54me. So every time I would catch a
- 13:55pass, I'd take off and I would just go and run into the end
- 14:00zone because to me, I, I was in, I was in track shape, I was in
- 14:04decathlon shape. And so I did that and then the
- 14:07fans would start, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:10And and then Coach Ramil would look over to see what was going
- 14:13on. If he wasn't watching the drill,
- 14:15he'd eventually see it on film that night.
- 14:17And that that was my style. You know, I did things and, you
- 14:20know, we we got into a Nutcracker.
- 14:22You know what a Nutcracker Drew is?
- 14:23You know, you just blocking against another guy, a defensive
- 14:26guy, and they hand the ball to a running back and they would put
- 14:29AD backer over top of me. I said, get him out of here,
- 14:31Bree, give me a linebacker. I'm a linebacker.
- 14:33I put somebody who's tough and and I just I I talked a lot.
- 14:38I talked a lot of trash out there.
- 14:40And then in the locker room, it was just me, you know, just
- 14:43having a ball and, and just listening the guys bitching, the
- 14:45moaning about how tough different most practices were
- 14:48and everything was the tempo, you know, you had to have your
- 14:51helmet, your pants on. And here I is.
- 14:53And the more, the more bitching I heard that that was music to
- 14:57my ears, baby, you know, because I knew I knew.
- 15:00So, but I, I, you know, I, I plus, no, this here's a good
- 15:05one. You'll like this one.
- 15:06I, I, I had a really cool car back then in that time by the
- 15:09Datsun 280 CT top and, and our, our, our wide receivers coach
- 15:14Dick Corey's son was about driving age and he loved my car.
- 15:19And he says, Vinnie, Vinnie Vinnie, he says, can I, can I
- 15:21drive your car? And it was, it was, it was an
- 15:23automatic. And I said, yeah, you can drive
- 15:25the car. I said, but what you got to do,
- 15:27I said, you've got to check in on the meetings every once in a
- 15:29while. Be my fly in a wall.
- 15:31Well, in the movie, there's that one scene where you know, my, my
- 15:36guy Danny Franks comes up and says, hey, you know, you got to
- 15:39do this or something, the weather, you know, and that was
- 15:42all because I, I had to fly in the wall here.
- 15:44I was going there. He says, hey, you're #3 in the
- 15:46depth chart right now, you're this, you're that you got to
- 15:48work on this. They love what you did about
- 15:51that, you know, and I saw I had that guy and it was pretty cool,
- 15:55you know, and I and I know I had that for me all behind me.
- 15:57And then you know, what about how many somebody years later,
- 16:02let's see it into O2. And I was retired in, in 89 and
- 16:0679. So, you know, 13 years later, I
- 16:09get to have this, this invincible thing.
- 16:12And it's really been wild. And you know, our, our, our, our
- 16:17premier was up in New York at the Zekefeld Theater.
- 16:20Yep. So, and so that was pretty cool,
- 16:22you know, to be up there in New York City for it.
- 16:24And it was, it was great and it's still great, you know, and
- 16:27it's still gone and, you know, I might, my son's playing for
- 16:30Italy's Olympic. He's a dual citizen for Italy
- 16:34and he's so it for the last couple of summers he's been in
- 16:37the World Championships, whatever there.
- 16:39And believe it or not, there's people from teams and other
- 16:42countries have come up to me because of Invincible that I I
- 16:46didn't even know was showing over there.
- 16:48But you know, it's, it's, it's gotten international and, and
- 16:52it's, it's been a lot of fun. So nobody's had more fun than
- 16:54me. But, you know, it wasn't, it
- 16:56wasn't easy on everybody else, especially my kids growing up.
- 16:59When everybody says the only reason you got where you are is
- 17:01because you're old man, you know, it's this and that.
- 17:04So, but they, they, they, they learned to overcome that.
- 17:06But you know what, like you, I was, I, I was being bullied, but
- 17:10I wasn't beaten up always. They beat the crap out of me
- 17:12half the time because yeah, I was, wasn't all that big, but
- 17:15I'm faster than hell, I could run away from him as quick as
- 17:19anybody. So but I, I in the end, I got
- 17:21it. I, I got in in the end.
- 17:23So it's all good. So I want to go back to you were
- 17:25mentioning your track career, you're doing that in college as
- 17:27well. And then obviously the the
- 17:29Olympics and there's we've seen it a lot now where these players
- 17:32go after their football career, go to the Olympics.
- 17:35We saw that with Marquis Goodwin as a track runner and a couple
- 17:37others as well. What was it like trying to
- 17:39balance that out? How do you think that is in
- 17:41modern sports today? Well, I don't know, you know,
- 17:44whatever. If they feel that they can.
- 17:45You know, you guys were talking earlier about being in your
- 17:47prime. You know, it would for a for
- 17:50decathlete. Decathlete is considered to be
- 17:52in his primary. He's 28 years old and and what
- 17:55for So and I, and I sort of I went to it.
- 17:58I went to Saint Joe's college on a track scholarship for pole
- 18:00voting. I never pole voted before And
- 18:03and on Father's Day, I, I hit 14 six and the world's record was
- 18:0616. And that my Father's Day gift to
- 18:09my dad was a scholarship to college.
- 18:12And what, when I got there, they said, well, you're not just
- 18:14going to pole vault. You're going to long jump,
- 18:16triple jump, high hurdle and you're going to run, you're
- 18:18going to lead off the 440 relay. So where we meet, I, I, I, I, I
- 18:22did, I did 5 events and, and did that for four years.
- 18:26And that eventually led to the decathlon.
- 18:28But you know, for those who make those transitions, God bless
- 18:31them. I mean, there's so many great
- 18:32athletes out there. Go for it, you know, and, and
- 18:35give it everything you got. I mean, you're going to think I,
- 18:37I got a lot of crap. When, when, when, when I was,
- 18:40you know why it's never been done before.
- 18:41You know your names, you, you don't have college football on
- 18:45your resume. You'll get hurt, you'll get
- 18:46injured. You know, what makes you think
- 18:48that you can make the team? That's the all I want.
- 18:50Just give me a chance. That's all, you know, that's
- 18:52all. And coach from Bill gave me the
- 18:54chance and you know, he's we're going to, we're all going to get
- 18:57together for a big celebration for his birthday.
- 19:00That's going to be hosted by Ron Jaworski Jaws.
- 19:03You know, and you know, thank God for Dick from me when he
- 19:06gave me that shot. Talk to me a little bit about
- 19:08them. I said you grew up in Northeast
- 19:10and it's kind of gritty and it's kind of tough up in that area of
- 19:14the country. But as you listen to your story
- 19:16or as our watchers, umm, listen and watch your story, there's
- 19:20onset shift that that's had happened to believe that you
- 19:24belong in the NFL. Talk to us a little bit about
- 19:27you going out and trying out in the open tryout versus you
- 19:31believe in that you belong in in the NFL.
- 19:34Well, I you know, it's, it's it's interesting.
- 19:36That's a great question server man asked of me before, but at
- 19:40that at that time I had which wasn't, which wasn't in the
- 19:45movie because they wanted they didn't want to jeopardize the
- 19:47drama of of me making it from the Eagles.
- 19:50But I did play in the world Football League, which is where
- 19:53Larry Zaka, Jim kick warfield, they all defected to and and so
- 19:58I, I, I did a free agent try out with them.
- 20:00I actually had four or five tryouts and I wound up.
- 20:03Starting as a wide receiver and, and I was against a lot of guys
- 20:06that were in the NFL and my mindset was if I could ever.
- 20:10And I'm a season ticket holder for the Philadelphia Eagles
- 20:13since I'm a junior sophomore in college with the guys in the
- 20:17movie we all had, we were, you know, we were all buddies and we
- 20:20all had those season tickets. My mindset was that, Jesus, I
- 20:24can only get a chance, but I'm never going to get a chance.
- 20:26So I wrote letters to the general manager.
- 20:28We didn't have Internet back then, you know, we didn't have
- 20:31text. We couldn't e-mail.
- 20:33And I'm writing letters. And I did get a letter back.
- 20:35And me, no, nobody, you know, you're not a football player
- 20:37and, you know, forget about it. And so my my lucky thing was
- 20:43that when the lake folded and this was and I was still in
- 20:48great shape and coach from Mill came in with his tryout.
- 20:51Is that my mindset? If you know, if I can only get
- 20:54there, somehow get in there, I'd be OK.
- 20:58Because I felt competing against the NFL guys when I was in the
- 21:01World League, I thought I might be able to get a shot at it,
- 21:04never thinking that I'd get that shot.
- 21:07And then what happened was there was a guy that was around the
- 21:10neighborhood and he he says, hey, I know the general manager
- 21:12and I told him about you and the general matter.
- 21:14Jim Murray knew me from my track days because he was a Villanova
- 21:18guy. We were big, you know, we're big
- 21:20rivals, Villanova and Saint Joe's.
- 21:23And he says, yeah, I'll put him on the list.
- 21:24But Coach Ramil didn't know I was on any list.
- 21:26I was, I just, I was just there. And once I had that tryout and
- 21:32after the and I ran the, I ran the 40, I ran a 4-5 in grass.
- 21:36So, you know, that's whatever it is.
- 21:38And and then he said we'll put him into the next drill.
- 21:41And the next drill was it was 7 on 7.
- 21:45But it was no, no different than the guys I was playing in the
- 21:47rough touch Lakes against. That was in the movie.
- 21:49I mean, it was just it was war. They always had an ambulance and
- 21:52a cop there at every game because somebody had been carted
- 21:55off the field and somebody would, you know, there'd be a
- 21:57fight. There was always a fight.
- 21:59And you know, it was that's that's the way it was.
- 22:02And then when I got that opportunity from coach from Hill
- 22:05and, and, and I finally got into training camp, I, I knew I
- 22:09belonged. I knew I belonged.
- 22:11And it was just a matter of, are they going to allow me to, to be
- 22:15there long enough to show them that I belong?
- 22:17And so the first, the first week was rookies and free agents.
- 22:22You know, that's how they do it. And so they're rookies and free
- 22:25agents. And Roman Gabriel was the
- 22:27quarterback there. And Gabe and I, when I signed a
- 22:30contract after the tryout for $21,000 in April, every day I
- 22:36went to the Veteran Stadium and I trained and I trained and I
- 22:39worked out with Roman Gabriel. And he got to know me a little
- 22:41bit, show me how to run routes, this, that and the other thing.
- 22:44So when we got to training camp in that first week, I'm
- 22:48catching, Jeez, I'm, you know, he's throwing the ball to me all
- 22:50the time and which was pretty cool.
- 22:53And I, you know, and like I said, I hit everything and
- 22:55moved. The second week though, the vets
- 22:56came in, I backed off because I was in such all, you know, I
- 23:00couldn't believe that I was on the same field, Billy Bradley or
- 23:04this guy or that guy, you know, and, and, and and and I
- 23:07couldn't, I couldn't get over that.
- 23:09That's why. Can you believe this?
- 23:11And so Ramir, coach Ramir came up to me and he says what
- 23:14happened to you? He said you're not the same guys
- 23:16last last week. And and I told him, I said, oh,
- 23:19I'm into all of all these guys. I can't get over the fact that
- 23:22I'm on the same field, woman. He said you're at all of them.
- 23:25He said they won two games last year out of 14.
- 23:27He said hip, I'm going to be gone.
- 23:29He said, Oh my ass. He said, get your head out of
- 23:32your butt or you're gone. He's stuck in your two weeks.
- 23:36And and so the first preseason game was against was against San
- 23:41Diego Chargers. And we're we're out there in San
- 23:44Diego and I'm wearing number 83 and I'm crying in the the
- 23:47national anthem And they said I was going to play the entire
- 23:50fourth quarter and I didn't get in until the 2nd.
- 23:53So after the 2 minute warning and I made two side adjustments,
- 23:57the audibles, you know, non non verbal audibles, you know, no
- 24:02checks or whatever and and two first downs and coach just put
- 24:07his nice job at power and and I just bought another two weeks.
- 24:10And then the next week is is against the Wingdon and I got a
- 24:13touchdown and had a couple catches and then the next week
- 24:15it's against whomever. And before you know it, here I
- 24:18am, I've got 6 touchdowns and 12 to 1012 catches and I'm leading
- 24:22the team and every season. And how's this happening?
- 24:26And but that's, you know, each, each week that in the enthusiasm
- 24:31and each week the fandom that I had behind me in the stands,
- 24:34every, every time I did anything, they'd be going crazy.
- 24:39It was nuts. And that's what that's what
- 24:42drove me and that's what kept me going.
- 24:44And then the last time, you know, talking about Rudy, Rudy,
- 24:48I like the kid Rudy all the time.
- 24:50I keep telling him that he was offsides, but he you know, you
- 24:56know, it's just it's just you got to get the shot and coach
- 25:00from you had a great saying, he says, and opportunities were to
- 25:03a person exactly what their preparation enables to make it.
- 25:07And you know, you got to be prepared.
- 25:08And when I get out and talk and you know, I've spoken all over
- 25:11the world for crying out loud, and that's one of my favorite
- 25:13quotes. The other one that he had was
- 25:15nobody ever drowned in sweat, which was I do all the time.
- 25:21Here's another one. You guys would love this one.
- 25:23Don't overload your mouth with your butt so or your butt
- 25:28forget. You know, I had too many hits to
- 25:29the head myself, but I. Might have to use that take.
- 25:33Yeah, that's a good one. So.
- 25:35But it is fun. And you know, I used to love
- 25:37going up to the Meadowlands. Oh my God, it was my favorite
- 25:40stadium. And I played in the miracle of
- 25:42the game, you know, with, with, with, with Herman.
- 25:44And, and that was what you know, but what I, I had a role and,
- 25:48and everybody in life, you know, is whatever your role is.
- 25:51And, and I, I didn't play much offense because we had Harold
- 25:54Carmichael for crying out. We had Charlie Smith and, and
- 25:58we, and we only had it like a two.
- 25:59We had, we had X&Z. We had a weak side and strong
- 26:02side receiver, tight end. We didn't put a slot in there.
- 26:05There were never four or five receivers on the field at any
- 26:07one time. The offense was very
- 26:09conservative. So my role was was I was a
- 26:12kamikaze guy. You know that was my nickname.
- 26:14You know kamikaze. That's your drink.
- 26:16Is that your drink too? Is that your drink too?
- 26:23Well, I'm down here. I, I sort of, I sort of worked
- 26:25my way into into to kill you. So I I have I I have but this is
- 26:34a 0 you know. But it takes like.
- 26:37Got to drink healthy. Now I was listening to you guys
- 26:40going with the NBA stuff and I was laughing my ass off back
- 26:44here and I've and then my refrigerator is right over here,
- 26:46you know. So I said what the heck, I'm not
- 26:48going to real. I'm going to do the real stuff.
- 26:49But you know, it is what he is. So there you.
- 26:53Go. So for all the fans out there,
- 26:54we were talking to former Eagles wide receiver Vince Papali,
- 26:58Invincible. You know the story.
- 27:01If you don't know the story, go and check it out.
- 27:03Mark Wahlberg plays him in the movie.
- 27:06It is a sensational movie. It's a great, great football
- 27:09movie. And, you know, it's so
- 27:10interesting because I look at Dick Vermeil, and Dick Vermeil
- 27:14always found those guys. Kurt Warner, another one.
- 27:17Underdog. Yeah, we know that story.
- 27:20American Underdog. They made a movie about it.
- 27:22And. The same guy said the production
- 27:24Mark Charity did, Miracle did Rookie did the new guy and he
- 27:28did he did Warners movie. And The thing is, is anybody
- 27:31that doesn't know the Kurt Warner story, I mean, this guy
- 27:34was trying. So he played in, played in the
- 27:37CFL, he played here, he played there.
- 27:39And, and this is a guy that was working in his family, was
- 27:43living in a, in a house that had no heat.
- 27:46And this guy was traveling with a truck that couldn't even
- 27:49really drive. And, and then he was working in
- 27:52a, a grocery store and he's throwing toilet paper and all
- 27:56that other stuff. And that's how we practiced when
- 27:59he wasn't on a football field. It is crazy.
- 28:01And Dick Vermeil, I, I don't think anybody understands who
- 28:03Dick Vermeil is. Dick Vermeil, what he found
- 28:06talent when the talent couldn't, couldn't find his their way on a
- 28:11football field or he just understood what he was looking
- 28:14for in a player. He wanted that.
- 28:16He wanted a guy that was going to work hard, go out there and
- 28:19play hard and do the right things, be a leader.
- 28:22And I think when I look at Kurt Warner, I look at you, Vince.
- 28:25Those those traits really came together and that's why I
- 28:30believe Kurt Warner became Kurt Warner an MVP Hall of Famer and,
- 28:35and really your story where it all began was because Dick
- 28:39Vermeil gave you an opportunity and.
- 28:40He trusted you. Yeah.
- 28:42And you know what? And, and when he believes you
- 28:44and when you become part of his family, you're always part of
- 28:46his family. And.
- 28:48And he did that. You know what he used to do,
- 28:49which was really cool? Every Thursday, he would have a
- 28:52steak dinner. And it was, I guess it was
- 28:54fluffy steak. He probably cooked right,
- 28:57pluffy. He would have a steak dinner on
- 29:00his hundred acre. I mean that log cabin house and,
- 29:05and, and what he did was, let's say he brings in the wide
- 29:08receiver. So it's me and Carmichael Chow a
- 29:10Weber and we go there. The rule was you couldn't talk
- 29:14about the Eagles football or anything else like that yet.
- 29:16Just talk about your life. And and he was a big Neil
- 29:19Diamond fan. So he'd have Neil Diamond going
- 29:21on in the background and he'd have a bottle of wine open there
- 29:24for us, you know, and, and we would talk and he would talk and
- 29:27we get to know each other. This is after he made the team.
- 29:30And then the next week he'd have the D backs and the next week
- 29:32and have this guy in that group. And at one time he had the
- 29:35captain through the team and it was Bill Burgie, me and Ron
- 29:39Jaworski to go to his house to have one of those dinners.
- 29:42And it was one of the most special things I've ever
- 29:45experienced. But, you know, it's the way he
- 29:47got to know that the guys he knows me, he was my my both my
- 29:51kids just got married that this past summer.
- 29:54And thank you and my daughter. I was expecting and Vinny's
- 29:59playing for the Olympics. He'll be in Dusseldorf coming up
- 30:03in a in a couple of months playing for Italy's flag
- 30:06football team. And but you know, coach Ramiro,
- 30:09he's there. He's he's there.
- 30:11He's been a part of me. He's been a part of our family
- 30:13and we love him together. And we'll, we'll never.
- 30:16And he's got a great wine man. He's a Calistoga guy and right
- 30:20right next to Napa and he's got, he's got a phenomenal red.
- 30:24So check it out. Yeah.
- 30:27Send us the name of that. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's Ramir
- 30:31wines, it's River wines. You can find it MDI that it's
- 30:34just that red blend is just great.
- 30:36And and, you know, he and he teamed up with a couple people
- 30:39in Napa, so he knows what he's doing.
- 30:41But you know what's great about that?
- 30:43He's a he's a renaissance man. He's a hunter.
- 30:45He's a mechanic. You know, he fixed his car as
- 30:48his father. He hit him, Coach Ramil, my
- 30:51father got along so well because my dad was a mechanic.
- 30:53He worked at Westinghouse and they got to know each other.
- 30:56And, you know, Dickwood could, he could repair the car, you
- 30:59know, when his, and he had race cars that he used to do and you
- 31:02know, he worked around the house.
- 31:04He didn't hire somebody they knew.
- 31:05It's like I, I do, I have AI live right off on our, on a golf
- 31:10course, not on a golf course, but in the golf community.
- 31:13And, and I, and I love, I, I just love being outside and, you
- 31:16know, and working. And, and that's, that's what
- 31:18Dick Lemire was. And he's so multifaceted and so
- 31:21talented. And that's what I'll tell you
- 31:23what, Doug Peterson, who won that Super Bowl for us a couple
- 31:27years ago, whom I know really well, it is right around the
- 31:30corner, actually. My wife saw them in his house.
- 31:32But Doug Peterson is so much like Dick for me.
- 31:34It's scary. And, you know, he's got those
- 31:37overall things and but but yet, you know, but he believes in
- 31:40people and he's and he's and he's nice to everybody.
- 31:43So it's pretty cool. You just, I love the coach.
- 31:45You just spoke about the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl that
- 31:48changed everything for the Philadelphia fans.
- 31:49And if anybody doesn't know me, I I'm a Jet fan, but I root on
- 31:54the Philadelphia Eagles as well because I grew up a Donovan
- 31:57McNabb fan. He's my favorite player.
- 31:59And it's funny because when I met you, Donovan.
- 32:04McNabb. Yes, I, Donovan McNab was
- 32:07running that party. He was the, the lead guy.
- 32:09He was the, the guy that was making a speech before the party
- 32:12and all that. And everybody was trying to go
- 32:13to Donovan McNabb. I bumped into you, Vince.
- 32:16I took a picture with you. We had a conversation for about
- 32:185 minutes because everybody was like, Oh my God, it's the
- 32:20invincible guy. And I was like, I would leave
- 32:22this guy alone. I don't want to bother him.
- 32:24So Donovan didn't want to deal with anybody there.
- 32:26He, he had this big bouncer, this big guy.
- 32:29He was like one of those guys that, you know, Floyd Mayweather
- 32:33walks with those 6768 big behemoth guys and remember.
- 32:37Yeah. And he's pushing people away.
- 32:39And I'll never forget because I'm standing right over there
- 32:42and I scream out his numbers in Syracuse.
- 32:45And he turned around. He smirked at me.
- 32:46He's like, what do you know about Syracuse?
- 32:48And then he just comes over there and he starts talking to
- 32:51me for about 10 minutes. Everybody's trying to get Yeah,
- 32:53and, and. And Donovan, by the way, for
- 32:56anybody that doesn't know Donovan McNabb, that man is a
- 32:59big man. That's a, that's a big dude.
- 33:02I wouldn't say, I'm not saying as far as tall, but he is
- 33:06muscular. He's got arms the size of like
- 33:09your legs. It's unbelievable how big this
- 33:12guy is. And I love the guy and I just
- 33:14knew so much about him. So I understood, you know, his
- 33:17background and his past, and I want to go back to what the
- 33:21Eagles did against the New England Patriots.
- 33:24Nick Foles, That's another story.
- 33:26Oh, that's it. Well, that's 1:30.
- 33:27That's that's for, that's a 30 for 30.
- 33:29You know, my my daughter, by the way, went to Syracuse.
- 33:31She cheered for them. So that was that was always a
- 33:34nice. Yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 33:35That that the crazy story about Nick Foles and you talk about
- 33:39like guys that just completely was forgotten.
- 33:42This guy was fishing when their star quarterback, Carlson Carson
- 33:48Wentz, goes down. This guy had an MVP here.
- 33:50He should have won the MVP that year.
- 33:52It was. I remember the whole story.
- 33:55They call Nick Foles up. He's fishing with his father and
- 33:59his family and they tell him, we're going to sign you.
- 34:02We need you. We need you to get here as soon
- 34:03as you can. He takes over and has one of the
- 34:06greatest runs like the Joe Flacco, one of the greatest runs
- 34:09we've ever seen a quarterback have all the way to the Super
- 34:12Bowl. And yes, I thought Tom Brady's
- 34:15best game of his career was a game that he lost against the
- 34:18Philadelphia Eagles. He threw 500 yards.
- 34:21He was unbelievable in the game, but was Nick Foles.
- 34:24What he did in that game surprised and shocked the world.
- 34:27And that to me when people talk about just things that just pop
- 34:31out that you don't expect and a guy just shows up.
- 34:34Those are the stories like the Vince Popoli's, the Kurt
- 34:37Warner's, the guys that just somehow comes out, you know,
- 34:40through the back end and and stabs you, stabs you right in
- 34:43the that was one, I mean. It was a beauty.
- 34:48It's a it was a it's a great story.
- 34:50And they just said the the 30 for 30, you know that the Philly
- 34:53special Doug, Doug has a boat and the boats called the Philly
- 34:57special. You know, I mean, and he he's
- 34:59he's he's such the greatest guy. But you know, what's funny is
- 35:02what we were saying about any any athlete, you know, nothing.
- 35:05And this is it because I know that Don and, and, and I love
- 35:08him and he's, he's really great. But when I first started going
- 35:13out and doing speeches, I asked coach for meals for some advice
- 35:16and he said, just treat everybody you meet as if the
- 35:19most important person you'll ever be in your life.
- 35:22And I remember down there, we took the train, me, Danny Franks
- 35:25and a couple guys, we took the we call what we call the, the
- 35:28Tri rail. And we took that right down to
- 35:30Miami and had that party. And Jaws was there with Mike
- 35:33Ditka. They were, they were the hosts
- 35:35and and and and and and and of course, Donovan was the guy
- 35:39that, you know, the other Ditka and and Jaws.
- 35:41They just sort of get off on the sideline.
- 35:44But Donovan is the one that, you know, there it is.
- 35:47There's there's, there's a, there's Syracuse right there.
- 35:49That's that's Gabby. I know I noticed it.
- 35:51I noticed right in the corner. I noticed everything on your
- 35:53wall right now. I and then like I said, I, I
- 35:56grew up a Donovan McNabb fan. Everybody tells me how could you
- 35:59root on the Eagles when you're a Jet fan?
- 36:01I said it's very simple. The Jets suck and, and at least
- 36:04Donovan McNabb and the Eagles get into the playoffs.
- 36:07It was hard to watch The Jets as a Jet fan all these years, but I
- 36:11I root on my teams and and everybody asks me, Saquon
- 36:14Barkley, when Saquon Barkley got screwed by the Giants, I was
- 36:16loving it. I was loving it.
- 36:19What, what a deal was right? You know Joe Namath lives right
- 36:24around the corner. Really.
- 36:26Broadway, Joe. Yeah, and he's there.
- 36:29He is. He's a typical example.
- 36:31He's he's there. He has a place what they call
- 36:33Love, Love Love Park and it's on the intercoastal and there's,
- 36:37you know, 5 or 6 restaurants and beers and, and he's got one
- 36:40right there called the Lucky Shuck where you can get some
- 36:43really good stuff in case you're horny.
- 36:45And so you go there and you know, you don't have to go to a
- 36:58pharmacy to eat it. So anyway, Joe Joe would be
- 37:03there and just welcoming everybody.
- 37:05We'll see him at the Publix and, and he's got his compression
- 37:07socks on and he's just the greatest guy in the world.
- 37:11You know every Broadway Joe that he even knows who I am.
- 37:16So it blows my mind. So it's been a, it's been a wild
- 37:20ride. He's a wild person.
- 37:22I've done a lot of events with, with Joe and it's funny, I was
- 37:26looking for him. So everybody was running to him.
- 37:29So I'm walking out, I'm leaving every he's doing the interviews
- 37:32about concussions and I'm standing there with my friend.
- 37:35I'm like, I, I wanted to have a conversation with, with Joe and
- 37:37he, he's standing right there next to me and says, well, you
- 37:40can have a conversation with me now.
- 37:42I turn around, it's him. He's wearing a hat and he's
- 37:45trying to cover himself that nobody bothers him.
- 37:48It was so funny. And then we he's, he's AI love
- 37:53Joe Namath. I just feel like Joe Namath.
- 37:56And by the way, Joe Namath is going through a lot of stuff
- 37:58right now. I've I've heard that he has
- 38:00cancer. If I'm not mistaken.
- 38:01There's something going on with him.
- 38:03I, I, I'm not sure, but there was stuff going on and I hope
- 38:06everything is going well. With I did not I did not hear
- 38:09that. And you know what?
- 38:10I just rang the bell. A bell.
- 38:13I just I just rang the bell. I had prostate cancer.
- 38:16Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Well, no, I'm.
- 38:18I'm. You know they beat it.
- 38:21And and in 2001 I had colon cancer, so I've twice wow time
- 38:26and you know, so one of the things I like to do is go out
- 38:29and and talk about that. And you know, thank God for
- 38:32those people that support me, but I rang the bell on on the
- 38:36the 6th of March and it was the coolest thing.
- 38:39And, you know, to have my daughter there And, and Doug
- 38:42Peterson's wife, Doug was at traveling where, but it's his
- 38:45wife Jeannie's right there. My wife Janet, They're best of
- 38:47friends. It was the coolest thing in the
- 38:49world, so. They're saying right now it's
- 38:51false. It came out in May, so it now
- 38:54it's saying it was false information that he had cancer.
- 38:57So there. Was, well, I wouldn't be
- 38:59surprised because it was, it was shown, it was, it was on
- 39:02Facebook that I had passed that my obituary showed up on the on
- 39:07the on Facebook. I don't even go.
- 39:09That's stupid crap. I hate social media.
- 39:11I am forced by our manager, our PR guys and everybody.
- 39:15Oh, you got to go on Facebook. You got to go on Instagram.
- 39:17You got to. You got to put yourself out
- 39:19there, ladies and gentlemen. You gotta go out there and let
- 39:21everybody know what you're doing.
- 39:23Q me and Errol and you gotta go attack each other and RIP each
- 39:26other apart. And I'm like sitting there.
- 39:28I wrote, I wrote my own eulogy, so you know, it's on Facebook
- 39:32somewhere. But here I am, you know,
- 39:40hormones and radiation and everything.
- 39:45Look at me. Look at me and Broadway Joe.
- 39:47Come on, Look at that. Look at us right there, Vince.
- 39:49That's me and I, I think that's, that's Broadway Joe.
- 39:52It could be you. I don't know.
- 39:54I mean, we look pretty sexy over there, man.
- 39:56I mean. I'm looking pretty good.
- 39:57I'm looking pretty good. Oh my goodness, show him again.
- 40:03Show him again. He's wearing his hat.
- 40:04Put your put your glasses on. Here it goes.
- 40:06But here we go. You can check it out right
- 40:08there. Put those glasses on my friend.
- 40:10Look at that. Oh boy.
- 40:12Yeah. I'm looking like I tell you
- 40:14what, fluffy steaks. Fluffy steaks, bitch, you need
- 40:19your you need your wine to go with a nice steaks.
- 40:21The wine that connects with the fluffy steaks perfectly.
- 40:24Come on, guys, when you listen to this show, you got to you got
- 40:27to throw curveballs. And I like the fluffy steaks,
- 40:29man. They pluff and they fluff and
- 40:31they blow your house down and they might blow something else
- 40:34down. Well, let's stay away from Joe
- 40:35Namitz's place because we'd be blowing something else, right?
- 40:38Speedy will be blowing something.
- 40:41That's one thing I, I, I, I, I believe in you.
- 40:43There's too much, there's too much electronics in sports right
- 40:47now, you know, and get and you know whether in, in the game,
- 40:50you know, then in hockey, we're watching the, you know, so we
- 40:52got to, we got to take a look and see if that really was a
- 40:55trip. You know what officials are
- 40:57going to make mistakes. Players are going to make a
- 40:58mistake. You know, the officials, they
- 41:00can get that, that they can get theirs remediated right there.
- 41:04But a player out there, he could have screwed up something that
- 41:06could have cost somebody a game. He doesn't get the opportunity
- 41:09to do it again, you know, because it was showed that, you
- 41:13know, should have done it this way and said it that way.
- 41:15And you know what? You see it in football.
- 41:17I mean, it's it's, it's ridiculous.
- 41:19Just let them make mistakes and play the God damn game, for
- 41:23crying out loud. It's making me nuts.
- 41:24You heard it, ladies and gentlemen, Vince Pappali says
- 41:27play that God damn game. I think playing the God damn
- 41:30game. I watch hockey, I watch
- 41:32basketball. I watch all these guys.
- 41:34They're they're good. They're good for nothing.
- 41:35They make millions of it. You just said you made 21,
- 41:38$1000. Your contract was 21,000.
- 41:41You got Dak Prescott making 60 million a year.
- 41:44He's out every throw that he so they're they're his average
- 41:47throw. Every time he throws a ball, he
- 41:49makes 50 thousand, 50,000. Every single throw he throws,
- 41:53every single game is $50,000. Think about it.
- 41:58Keep that arm, keep that arm good 50,000.
- 42:02It is what it is. I'll never regret what I got.
- 42:05And you know what I earned? I think I earned every penny of
- 42:09it. So whatever.
- 42:13Yeah, hey, it is what it is. Wasn't about money.
- 42:16I would have, you know, I would have said I I played.
- 42:19There's a great book out there called Playing for Pizza.
- 42:22You know, I paid for a six pack and semi pro ball.
- 42:24I mean, I literally did. And after the game was over,
- 42:27there would be someone sitting right there in my in my locker
- 42:30with a pair of Adele's pair of Adele's and that was it because
- 42:33I couldn't afford it. You know, I was teaching school
- 42:36and it was, it was great. You know, so it is what it is.
- 42:39But now, you know, with with the football and now the other
- 42:41sports are picking it up and they're going off now to the
- 42:44streaming networks and they're taking the game away from kids
- 42:48and and others and families who can't afford their to be in.
- 42:52You know, be lucky as I am and say I have YouTube or whatever.
- 42:56You know, the first, the last thing I did before I came out
- 42:58here was I checked check to see on YouTube and see what I'm
- 43:01going to be watching the night after after it's all over.
- 43:04I'll probably watch a hockey game for that over.
- 43:06You know, Vince, it's, it's interesting because if you know
- 43:09this story from our show and what we started over the years,
- 43:13we've always looked at, you know, there's all these other
- 43:15shows and we were a digital profile show that really started
- 43:201213 years ago and we were on Periscope.
- 43:22We were the first show that ever aired on Periscope.
- 43:25Then ESPN started doing CBS Sports radio.
- 43:27Everybody started doing and copycatting us, me and my
- 43:30partner Mike, We, we really took it to another level.
- 43:33And then it kind of spread and, and all that other stuff.
- 43:35And now you look at all these shows, they're making all this
- 43:37money. And mostly I'm, I'm just being
- 43:40honest, a lot of these shows are just horrible.
- 43:42You have athletes going out there.
- 43:43They think it could speak on a mic.
- 43:45They think they know what they're talking about and they
- 43:47think they can speak about this and speak about that.
- 43:48And then there's there's there's other people that think, oh, I'm
- 43:52friends with this guy. So I'm going to do a show with
- 43:54this guy and I'm going to spit out whatever I want about
- 43:57basketball, even though we know nothing about basketball.
- 44:00And I'm listening to them. I'm like, what the hell are you
- 44:03talking about? I don't even understand you.
- 44:05I mean, do you speak English? Do you know basketball English
- 44:07or you just, you know, Spanish and you're trying to throw
- 44:10something that's going to stick. That's the problem right now in
- 44:12the media world, what you're saying social media, everybody
- 44:15uses everybody tries to do this and they go out there and they
- 44:19think, hey, easy, I'm going to do it because this guy's doing
- 44:22it. I could speak on a mic.
- 44:23I can entertain people. I can wipe my ass on a show.
- 44:26I mean, somebody spitting on the ground and there's 30,000 people
- 44:29on YouTube or following him. Think about that spitting on the
- 44:33ground. He's all over the place and he
- 44:35spits on the ground, spits on the Empire State Building, spits
- 44:38on this goes to the I mean it's, it's ridiculous.
- 44:41And you, you wonder like, what do people really want to watch?
- 44:45Like, is this interesting? People dancing on TikTok doing
- 44:48their duty, their, their stupid little crazy, stupid dances.
- 44:51I mean, it's, it's ridiculous. It doesn't make any sense to me.
- 44:54But when you played, you couldn't watch every game.
- 44:57You couldn't go if if, if you weren't living in Philadelphia,
- 44:59you couldn't watch a Philadelphia Eagle game.
- 45:02The game had to be sold out at first of all, you know, first of
- 45:05all, we didn't have cable right, you know, and then that came in,
- 45:08you know, with with Spectrum cable, whatever they had.
- 45:11And but, you know, we had the back in the day, we had the
- 45:14black and white with the antennas and, you know, you had
- 45:17you had to walk up and turn the dial.
- 45:20That was the dad sitting back there drinking his Schmidt
- 45:23Schlitzer Schaefer, you know, there change the town, you know,
- 45:27But you know, nothing was better than Friday night fights in
- 45:30black and white TV. You know, and they asked my dad
- 45:33if I could have a sip of beer. I mean, to me that was living,
- 45:38living in a housing project for crying out loud, that my house
- 45:42wasn't as big as the garage I have here down in Florida.
- 45:46I never drank, but The funny thing I used to do when I was
- 45:49around my father is my father used to smoke and I was a kid.
- 45:52I was five years old and my father, he had an ashtray.
- 45:55So he walked, he went to the bathroom and I'm seeing that I'm
- 45:57like, I wonder how it is to smoke a cigarette.
- 46:00Like I want to be cool like my dad.
- 46:01So I pick up the cigarette and I, I just puff on it.
- 46:05I started choking. It came like out of my ears.
- 46:08Like it just the smoke actually came out of my ears.
- 46:11And my father comes out of the bathroom and he sees me coughing
- 46:14and says, serves you're right. He says, I guarantee you'll
- 46:17never, you'll never smoke again, you know?
- 46:19And he was right. I never smoked a cigarette again
- 46:22after that. True story, True story on me.
- 46:25I was five years old. And I said, hey, it's cool.
- 46:28Everybody looks at cigarettes. Everybody smokes and hanging out
- 46:30with their friends. I want to smoke a cigarette.
- 46:32Oh, you want to smoke a joint? Let's smoke a joint.
- 46:34It looks good. And then they they realize that
- 46:37after the fact, they do it all. They're all paranoid.
- 46:39Oh, my God, stay away from me. I don't want to.
- 46:41The cops are after me and they're running and hiding in
- 46:44their closet. I mean, people are nuts and
- 46:46people are nuts and and that's what this show is all about.
- 46:50Vince Nathan, I'm sure told you a little bit about us.
- 46:53The one thing I could say about us is we're real dudes.
- 46:57We go out there, we entertain you people and and all the fans
- 47:00out there, we want them to see us for what we are.
- 47:03We we're knowledgeable guys, but we want to entertain people.
- 47:05You don't want to sit here and bore people when they're
- 47:07watching us and say, Oh my God, Vince Pappali, we see him on
- 47:10every single show. Who cares?
- 47:12I'm having no no. No, I don't have an agent.
- 47:16My agent's living. She's she's, she's out there
- 47:18reading a book or, or doing whatever.
- 47:21If, and, you know, and, and morning Toast, you know, Mr.
- 47:24Toast is our owner's granddaughter.
- 47:27And if it's a good friend of hers, one for him, you know, I
- 47:29wouldn't be here talking to you guys.
- 47:31So it all worked with him, you know, because he made a phone
- 47:34call and already made a text and, and it's pretty cool.
- 47:37I will tell you something about Niffen.
- 47:39Niffen is one of those guys. He is so the funny story is, is
- 47:44Nathan, before he started doing media, he he watched my show and
- 47:47he became a fan of my show. He reached out to me and he
- 47:50says, well, how do you, you know, how do you do this?
- 47:52And I said, I gave him some advice and, and, and all that
- 47:54other stuff. And Nathan started to do it
- 47:56himself. And then he went out on his own
- 47:58and, and I told Nathan, you know what?
- 48:00You're great. The, the, the greatest thing
- 48:02about you is that you will go out there and you will talk to
- 48:06everybody. You will have No Fear to go up
- 48:08to people and speak to people and interact with people.
- 48:12And that's something that IA lot of people can't do in this
- 48:14world. I, I, people are afraid they're
- 48:17oh, oh, that's Vince Papali. Oh, oh, that's, that's, Oh my
- 48:20God, that's all Wayne Gretzky. You know, IA funny story about
- 48:23Wayne Gretzky. The first time I met Wayne
- 48:25Gretzky was at a draft and I really had to go to the bathroom
- 48:28and he, he called out the Edmonton Oilers draft pick.
- 48:32And we're, there's an elevator right by the stage and I'm
- 48:34standing right on the stage going down to, to the media room
- 48:38so I can interview Wayne Gretzky.
- 48:39And I was very sick. I ate something on the table and
- 48:43I, I, I let one go, OK in the elevator.
- 48:46True story. And Wayne Gretzky looks at the
- 48:49kid that was drafted by Edmonton and he looked at him and he did
- 48:52this. And all of a sudden he looked at
- 48:54me. He pointed at me and I turned
- 48:55around. I said it was me.
- 48:57I'm sorry, Wayne, I have to go to the bathroom.
- 49:00I got stuck in the elevator. And he looked at me.
- 49:03He said, could you, you do it when the doors open?
- 49:05I mean, seriously, man, that was the first time I met Wayne
- 49:09Gretzky. Funny story is the next time I
- 49:12met Wayne Gretzky was at a hockey game and he remembered
- 49:15exactly who I was. So your true story is, is that's
- 49:19How I Met Wayne Gretzky. I I beefed in the.
- 49:21Elevator, you mean, you mean Dwayne?
- 49:23Jet ski? That commercial was.
- 49:25Yeah, that that is so funny. I love it.
- 49:28Hey. Well, listen, guys, I'm going
- 49:29to, I'm going to have to wrap it up, but I can, I leave you with
- 49:32something that it was given to me.
- 49:35And, and you know, for everybody out there and especially your
- 49:38fandom, and you know, if you have that, that impossible dream
- 49:41and a lot of people are going to, you know, your naysayers
- 49:43going to be there. And there's a lot of it all
- 49:45comes down to jealousy or, or, or an aptitude or people don't
- 49:49have the guts to do what you're trying to do.
- 49:51And when I, when I was going to try to do it and, and when I was
- 49:54growing up and in high school, my mother was institutionalized
- 49:58and, and my high school coach, I didn't know it at the time, his
- 50:02mother was institutionalized, but there was that bond between
- 50:05US and neither one of us. I didn't know anything about
- 50:07him. He knew about my mom.
- 50:09But what he was the first guy I went to when I went when I got
- 50:13invited to that tryout and again, the different meal didn't
- 50:17know the he got to know me after I ran the 40 yard dash and that
- 50:20was it for that. But I went to my coach corner
- 50:24and I said, what do you think? And he and he just says, Are you
- 50:27ready? And I said, yeah, I'm ready.
- 50:28He says, let me give you this quote said happier.
- 50:30Those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make
- 50:33their dreams come true. And every day is a victory.
- 50:36And I know that now because as a as a cancer survivor, you know,
- 50:40you win the day. But you know what the question
- 50:42is, you know, you can dream all you want and you could be a
- 50:46poser, but if you don't have the hustle, if you don't have the
- 50:49grit and and you don't want to make the sacrifices have to be
- 50:52made, the prices that have to be paid, forget about it because
- 50:56you're not you're not only fooling yourself or the people
- 50:59around you are going to know that the real story.
- 51:01So you know, happier, those willing to pay the price.
- 51:04And we've all paid the price. Every one of you guys here to
- 51:08get to where you got did that and it didn't come easy.
- 51:11And you know that's. So, so, so you know, we are a
- 51:15top 100 show. We've been a top 100 show for
- 51:18the last two months in the country.
- 51:20We're under football shows on Spotify and Apple.
- 51:22We've been as high as 30th. And we're not even on a major
- 51:26network. So what we're doing right now is
- 51:29a lot of people are probably seeing and they're like Spotify
- 51:32and Apple, Like we're, we're beating guys that are right now
- 51:35#1 on the main lines of New York and all over the country.
- 51:41And we're kicking the you know what out of them.
- 51:43And, and the one thing I could say about this is you got to
- 51:46work hard. You got to believe in yourself
- 51:47and you got to understand that you got.
- 51:48To and that's a great, great point.
- 51:50You got to believe in yourself and it's always nice to have
- 51:53people around you to believe in you as well.
- 51:55And I and I had that and then I was saying earlier, you know,
- 51:59the fans report that I got every time I caught a pass and you
- 52:04know, and I still get it, you know, I don't buy, I don't buy
- 52:06too many beers in Philadelphia. I'll tell you that.
- 52:10Not many Fleet Philly cheese steaks either, right?
- 52:13Oh, man, I'll tell you what, I go to a mall.
- 52:14They're all good, you know, 1, you know, I'm not going to
- 52:17choose one over the other. It's just they're all just so
- 52:20good, you know, just cut that. But it's not a it's not a puffy,
- 52:23you know, they they choose. Well done.
- 52:26Well, I'm glad you'll. Remember, you got to give us
- 52:28word. You got to give us word.
- 52:29Where's the place to go? You.
- 52:31Got to give. I would.
- 52:31If you want to really have a fun time is is either go to Patch or
- 52:35Gino's. It's on Passchunk Ave.
- 52:37They're right across the street from each other and one thick 11
- 52:41steak is a little bit thicker than the other, but they're both
- 52:43phenomenal. They're puffy.
- 52:45And you know, I won't choose one over the other, but I would
- 52:48choose those two there. I mean, there's others steak
- 52:50places, there's gyms right around the corner.
- 52:52I have a, I have a house in Philadelphia that was built back
- 52:55in the 1850s, for crying out loud.
- 52:57It's pretty cool, you know, And it's in, it's a historic area
- 53:00and there's this one place right around the corner from us called
- 53:03Jim's that they say is the best in Philadelphia.
- 53:06So, but if you want to go and get some really great Italian
- 53:10food in Philly, go down to 7th and 7th and Passyunk and go to
- 53:15go to the Saloon. The Saloon.
- 53:19Saloon, that's not and that's no shop that Joe, you know, runs
- 53:23either, right the. Saloon.
- 53:24So next time I go in, yeah, the saloon, it's, it's pretty good.
- 53:27Great to be with you guys. Appreciate you for coming home
- 53:31man. Yeah, man.
- 53:32We got to get you on again. We'd love for you to come on
- 53:34whenever you have. A chance today, baby.
- 53:36Every day is a victory. Let's go, birds say yeah.
- 53:40Mr. Invincible, ladies and gentlemen, Vince Papali.
- 53:44Fantastic. I want to apologize to you guys
- 53:46because I, you know, it's fun, funny about Vince and I don't
- 53:50think anybody understands is I got a chance to talk to Vince,
- 53:54but everybody was like on top of him at the Super Bowl, at that
- 53:58smoking, you know, event. And it, it, it's funny because
- 54:03the, the only people that really knew him was the kids and, and
- 54:06the grown-ups are like, who the hell is that?
- 54:08You know, but the kids know the, the story, the movies.
- 54:11However, Vince came in with his green jacket and his, you know,
- 54:15his green tie and everybody. And then Donovan McNabb didn't
- 54:18want to talk to anybody. He didn't want to speak to
- 54:21nobody. And Mike Ditka, he was like
- 54:23really, really bad. I mean, I, I've met Mike a
- 54:26couple of times, but he couldn't even really walk.
- 54:29So it, it was crazy. And I love my Dick.
- 54:33I love, I love Vince Papali is a guy that I I look up to because
- 54:37of the story behind the story. And anybody out there that
- 54:41understands what it is to work hard to get to where you want.
- 54:44That's the kind of story, the Kurt Warner story.
- 54:46The guys that work their asses off and believe in themselves
- 54:50and they believe that they can go out there and play at a high
- 54:52level. And, and that's what we do.
- 54:54And anybody that's listening to the show right now, anybody that
- 54:57doesn't know who we are and, and what we do, what we do
- 55:01differently than everybody else is we bring a different kind of
- 55:04content to the world. And, and it's sports related,
- 55:08it's funny, it's comedy, it's crazy, but we know what we're
- 55:11talking about. And I, I love my fluffy steaks.
- 55:13So listen, if you don't understand it, I've got names.
- 55:17I've got ways of proving ourselves to everybody.
- 55:20Quinton Couples has been a fan of the show.
- 55:22He was, he worked on a show before he came on the show and
- 55:25became something to our show. And now look at him.
- 55:28He's working and he he's part of it, the brand of what we do
- 55:32here. So I everybody understands what
- 55:35we do and how hard we work. So thank you to Vince Papali.
- 55:38Sensational was a great interview.
- 55:40Thank you to Nathan for landing that and helping us out there.
- 55:44All right, so ladies and gentlemen, I don't know if

- 1:00:54very, very well. I think you know my personality.
- 1:00:57I know your personality. I'm a little crazy.

- 1:01:35Your I'm gonna go to the, I'm gonna go to the board on it, but

- 1:05:08of the biggest busts in NBA history.
- 1:05:10That's because of injury. Unfortunately, he had a really
