- 1:05How's everybody? Doing tonight, I'm a little
- 1:08under the weather. I've been fighting a little
- 1:11little scratchy throat, little cold, but I'm, I'm rocking and
- 1:13rolling, man. Let's you, Sheldon.
- 1:16And do a good man. Busy, busy, busy with work.
- 1:19But I really enjoyed the Hokies beat down of UVA last night.
- 1:22A historic beat down no less. So that made the week a lot
- 1:25better. And we'll talk about that a
- 1:27little bit later, Tally. Now you were Brian's sick this
- 1:30week. You were sick last week.
- 1:31What'd you tell? Last week, man, a little bit
- 1:33sick. Got to tell Brian he needs to
- 1:35stay out of the whore houses. That's where you're getting
- 1:38sickness from. Stay out of there.
- 1:42I'm glad that y'all going to talk a little hoops because I
- 1:45renounced basketball all together for about maybe a
- 1:50couple of weeks. Couple weeks, You know, the
- 1:53Lakers don't do nothing. So hey, it's it's it's All Star
- 1:57week. They scoring 200 points in the
- 2:00All Star game. I ain't watching that shit.
- 2:03You know. The Hokies have been what they
- 2:04have. So I'm excited to hear what
- 2:06y'all got to say because I ain't watch shit.
- 2:08You ain't watch it well. No, I ain't watching.
- 2:11OK, well, you're going to find something about what happened
- 2:13last night in in that in a little while here when we talk
- 2:17about who's, but we're going to start off tonight.
- 2:19Me and Brian had the opportunity yesterday and we sat down with
- 2:23the offensive coordinator of the Virginia Tech Hokies, Tyler
- 2:26Bowen. So we're going to start off with
- 2:28the interview there and Brian has a good time.
- 2:31He I think we could have went longer because Kyron mentioned
- 2:34like he's a funny guy. There are a couple of times he
- 2:36pushed that chair back like he was ready to go awards.
- 2:39Yeah man, super bright dude, very sharp.
- 2:44But like you can tell that he's he's ready to roll and has a has
- 2:48a really good personality and can definitely, you know
- 2:51somebody you want to have a beer with and hang out and just pick
- 2:53their brain a little bit. So absolutely we'll we'll fire
- 2:57it up here and we'll talk about a little bit once it's once it's
- 2:59done here. Pick one of podcast listeners.
- 3:04Today we have a very special guest with us.
- 3:06We're introducing Coach Tyler Bowen, your offensive
- 3:10coordinator. Coach Bowen, how are you today?
- 3:13Doing good. How about you guys?
- 3:15Doing good. Thank you for taking the time
- 3:17out of your day to join us. I know, I know it's busy.
- 3:20I know y'all are kind of just wrapping up the the big push
- 3:24with the with the recruiting for 2025.
- 3:26So I appreciate you taking the time and and joining us tonight.
- 3:30That's all good. Appreciate.
- 3:32Appreciate you guys pushing the brand, supporting Virginia Tech.
- 3:36Love the show. I'm glad to be on it.
- 3:39Appreciate you, Coach. And let's let's start there
- 3:41because you know right now I know the big push right now.
- 3:43Offseason phase one. You got winter workouts, hunger
- 3:47drills every Tuesday and Thursday.
- 3:50In what ways are you as quarterback coach and offensive
- 3:53coordinator? How are you evaluating players
- 3:56development during phase one of the offseason?
- 3:59Well, you know, starting out, I love this time of the year,
- 4:01right? We call it phase one for a
- 4:02reason. You can't get to the 4th, 1:00
- 4:04until you accomplish this one, right?
- 4:06So we're we're all about it. We're boots on the ground.
- 4:09I love being back on campus and off the road and on the grass
- 4:12with these guys. So that that part's been fun.
- 4:15But I, you know, I love this time of the year because I think
- 4:17it's a time you strip everything down to the studs and start
- 4:20over. You know it.
- 4:21It you know nothing. You can have experiences from
- 4:24year to year that you can build on and and draw on and things
- 4:28like that, but you're you got to strip it back down to the studs
- 4:31and build it back up and phase one's a great time to do that.
- 4:33So when we're on the field right now from a quarterback
- 4:36perspective, but the whole offense, you know, it's building
- 4:39the entire offense back up and layering it from 100 level up.
- 4:43You know, we talk about it like it's a class, right?
- 4:45We you got to accomplish 100 level before you can move to 200
- 4:49level. So that's been fun.
- 4:50It's also been fun just like you're talking about to be able
- 4:53to you know see some early enrollees get on campus and see
- 4:56them on the grass, see transfers on the grass and then also see
- 5:00the improvements that our rosters made from from last year
- 5:03to now, right what they put in in the month of January.
- 5:06You know, that's been fun. So we're we're looking at all,
- 5:09but I love this time of the year because it's really a time to
- 5:11really build up from the basics and and and start start from
- 5:14there. What?
- 5:15What is that? What is that emphasis that Coach
- 5:17Bry has on competition? What?
- 5:19What can you kind of see from that, from these winter workouts
- 5:22and those hunger drills? Yeah, it's awesome, right.
- 5:24That's a fundamental for our program.
- 5:27You know it's pretty neat, right?
- 5:28Every, every drill is competitive.
- 5:30So it when we're running that agility circuit or whatever
- 5:33we're doing, there's a match up, right.
- 5:35So they all have an individual match up and then there's
- 5:38individual group and and team competitions at the end.
- 5:41So you know put them in a mindset to compete.
- 5:44You know that's that's a big piece of it.
- 5:45You can. It's not just when you hit the
- 5:47grass. You got to have a mindset to win
- 5:49at all times and I think we're able to build that in our hunger
- 5:52drills in in phase one. I absolutely love hearing you
- 5:55talk about like taking it down to the studs every year because
- 5:58you're right. Like what happened last year is
- 6:00last year. We we can't go back and we we
- 6:02can build upon it, but we can't effectively had an eighth win,
- 6:06had a ninth win, We got to start over again.
- 6:09Let me ask you this. We talked to Coach Pride last
- 6:11year and he mentioned how he's always looking to improve,
- 6:14changing when needed. So let me ask you this, as you
- 6:17head in the latter, latter stages of phase one getting into
- 6:21spring ball there, is there anything from year one to year
- 6:243, even this year or last year to this year that you've changed
- 6:29in preparing for those 15 practices and the spring game
- 6:32itself? Yeah, for sure.
- 6:34I mean I think, I think we're trying to evolve every year,
- 6:37right. I think the the only bad plan is
- 6:39one that can't change. You got to got to be willing to
- 6:42adapt, be willing to evolve. I know you know as soon as the
- 6:46season ends, I start getting the itch.
- 6:49You know you take a couple of days, but you start getting the
- 6:51itch of you know what are best practices.
- 6:53So we we we look at everything to try to evolve our offense.
- 6:57Best practices in college. Best practices in the NFL.
- 7:00And and what I mean by that from a schematic standpoint, you know
- 7:02who's who are the top five teams on 33 to 6.
- 7:06You know we can make a big step there.
- 7:08What what are they doing? Are there any, is there anything
- 7:10common with those five teams? Is there something that we could
- 7:13implement that that fits our identity?
- 7:15Right. Same thing, red zone touch,
- 7:17what, whatever area. So we've been going through that
- 7:20process that'll continue to to go on.
- 7:22We look at that every level of college.
- 7:25Also the NFL, we're just looking for little nuances, best
- 7:28practices, just looking to evolve the scheme every year.
- 7:32I think this is a time of the year where obviously
- 7:34professional development, calling people, you know,
- 7:37getting ideas, I think things like that going to visit people
- 7:41you know, we're starting with that.
- 7:42But then also you know you mentioned that you're looking
- 7:45every year how can we evolve and adapt maybe how we installed
- 7:49last year compared to how we want to install this year,
- 7:51right. What are what are strengths of
- 7:53our personnel that we can kind of foresee what do we want to
- 7:56build around. So we're constantly looking at
- 7:58that and you know how how we can change, how we can make it, you
- 8:02know a better, you know a better learning process for the
- 8:05players, a better install schedule.
- 8:07So we're doing all of those things right now before we roll
- 8:10into spring ball and we actually started implementing some of
- 8:12those in in phase one. Very.
- 8:15Nice. That's awesome to hear.
- 8:16And it's also to hear that it's always a continually evolution,
- 8:19like, you know, there's always that room for improvement, room
- 8:21for growth, right. We're going to pivot a little
- 8:25bit here to talk about something else.
- 8:27You know a lot of the the transfer portal capital was
- 8:30spent on the defensive side of the ball this turn around, but
- 8:34there was a huge ad on the offensive side with Montavious
- 8:36Cunningham on the offensive line.
- 8:38What impressed you the most about him and are you looking
- 8:41for him to kind of slide in at that tackle spot or is he going
- 8:43to move inside the guard, you think?
- 8:45Well, I think, you know, going going back to what attracted us
- 8:48to him, you know, just from a film standpoint and a measurable
- 8:51standpoint, right? He's a guy that's got a ton of
- 8:53experience. Started this past year at
- 8:56tackles, got some guard experience as well, and then
- 8:59he's got length, size and athleticism.
- 9:01And that's what we're constantly trying to improve up front and
- 9:04really at every position, right. We want to we want to have the
- 9:07biggest, longest, most athletic team we can put on the field and
- 9:11that applies in a lot of position, but especially at the
- 9:13offensive line, you know that that that helps you just from
- 9:16the get go. So I think that but then getting
- 9:18them on campus, him and his family like the type of fit he
- 9:21was going to be, the type of aptitude he had, the type of
- 9:24motivation he had to come and to come to a place like Virginia
- 9:27Tech and and compete to earn a job.
- 9:30You know, as far as position right now I think our job and
- 9:33I'm a kind of pivot to offensive line in general.
- 9:36You know, we've got to be in a mindset of making sure we put
- 9:38our best five on the field, right?
- 9:40That that's got to be the starting point to create that
- 9:43starting O line. And really as much as we look
- 9:45about you know, you know we look at it as, OK, this guy's the
- 9:49left tackle, this guy's the right tackle, left guard, right
- 9:51guard, center, so on and so forth.
- 9:52It's really being able to get a ranked number of one through 10,
- 9:56one through 15. Where do these guys fit, you
- 10:00know, as far as their playing ability, right?
- 10:02That's what we're constantly trying to evaluate now phase
- 10:05one, going into phase two, all those things.
- 10:08So I think that the biggest thing with Montavy is there's
- 10:11there's some position flexibility there.
- 10:13You know he'll be able to come in and compete on the interior.
- 10:15He's got some tackle flex to move out, but but I think he
- 10:19provides a a piece in there. You can get in there and and and
- 10:21battle to be in that top five. Yeah, you guys really apprecied
- 10:26that since day one. It felt like yours like get your
- 10:28best five on the field when it comes to the offensive line and
- 10:31y'all have not shot away from that at all in the last three
- 10:33years. So I love to hear that as a
- 10:35continuing this is what we're going to do.
- 10:38We're not trying to go all over the place.
- 10:40Best five will play them. I'm going.
- 10:43To play a piggyback on that, I think, you know, that goes in
- 10:46the way coach, crook, coach those guys.
- 10:47I mean I think we do a really nice job from starting with him
- 10:51you know and cross training those guys.
- 10:53You know we we get you got to you got to start a young player
- 10:56in a position to get them comfortable with the scheme
- 10:58right to like hey this is the play call.
- 11:01I'm moving in this direction. This is my technique.
- 11:04But the techniques really carry over across the board.
- 11:06I'm either a covered player or uncovered player on most plays
- 11:09right. So those techniques start to go
- 11:11then you figure out OK who's got the athleticism when we get out
- 11:13space things like that. So they're developing all those
- 11:16skills. You got to start them, you know,
- 11:18from A1 position spot and then I think Coach Crook does a really
- 11:22nice job of moving those guys around.
- 11:27Yeah, I like that. And you know when when we talk
- 11:30about that like position flexibility is so important and
- 11:33I'm, I love that crook. It has been preaching that has
- 11:36done a good job with that cross training.
- 11:38That's really important to hear. Let's talk a little bit of
- 11:41scheme though. So, you know, you began last
- 11:43season. Yeah, Grant Wells starting at
- 11:45quarterback, but by Week 2 you had a different young man under
- 11:49center. What was your philosophy during
- 11:51that change and in what ways did Kyron skill set create new
- 11:54opportunities for the? Offense.
- 11:56Yeah, I think. I think the first thing right
- 11:59is, is Kyron, you know, true, true triple threat guy, right?
- 12:03He can do it with his legs and do it with his arm.
- 12:05He's got a ton of aptitude to what we were able to put on him
- 12:08from a scheme standpoint and the checks he can make at the line,
- 12:10things like that. That was that was neat to watch
- 12:13him grow into that role on the offense.
- 12:15So I think all of those things lead to it.
- 12:17But when you really think about the turning point is, is getting
- 12:20the run game going right? Any successful offense, you want
- 12:23to be able to run the Russian battle.
- 12:25And I think with this skill set back there, you're able to build
- 12:27on it, right? You're you're you're never
- 12:29outnumbered in the box right now.
- 12:31Now you get extra hat in the box.
- 12:33It's it's not always the answer to have to throw against
- 12:36Outnumbered. Right now you've got the
- 12:37opportunity to truly read a player and put a guy in conflict
- 12:41and him be a real threat with his legs.
- 12:44So I think that opened up a lot of things and then continue as a
- 12:46season, as a season went to be able to build on play action
- 12:50concepts around that to create some explosive passes, move guys
- 12:53around, get them in different spots where the defense can't
- 12:56key on them. But I think it it all started
- 12:58with with him opening that up with his running ability.
- 13:01Absolutely. I want to ask about that because
- 13:03you sit here and you talk about the run game, getting it going
- 13:06to play action. One play that takes me back last
- 13:08year was against Wake Forest, Y'all ran the RPO and that
- 13:12safety just, he just said, oh, we're running the ball and the
- 13:15next thing you know, you had Jay Lane on the little post.
- 13:18When you guys are just looking, you know, breaking down the
- 13:21tape, are y'all looking for tendencies like that, like this
- 13:24guy, when he sees an RPO, he will come to the line quickly.
- 13:27It's who he is as a player. Yeah, I think I think when you
- 13:30talk about and that is you know I think a lot gets made about
- 13:33RPO you know some. So we we got all types of
- 13:35category categories for those. So I'll let you know a lot of
- 13:37what we do, we do some TTO those are triple throw options are
- 13:40really in the triple option realm, right.
- 13:43We got RPO's which hey we want to run the ball first pass it if
- 13:46we get outnumbered right. And then you've got a APRO world
- 13:49where you want to we're throwing the ball you know unless they
- 13:52cover it up. Now we've got run numbers back
- 13:54in the box. So we categorize all those
- 13:57things but but certainly like in an RP world, you know we're all,
- 14:01we're constantly looking how do they want to support that
- 14:04formation from a run standpoint right now And a lot goes into
- 14:07that right defensive call predicates that back alignment,
- 14:12different things formationally how they want to support the
- 14:14run. So that's something we're
- 14:15looking for every week, right. If there's two ways to look at
- 14:18it, right, we could read a got a run or we could read a got a
- 14:21throw that was the situation they were supporting hard to our
- 14:24running back. We we kind of noticed that we
- 14:27got that tag up in the game and Karen was able to go take
- 14:30advantage of it, Did a really nice job reading the play. 100%,
- 14:34I want to talk another keep the subject here with Karen for a
- 14:37minute because we had him on just a couple weeks ago and he
- 14:40talked about the enthusiasm you had getting him to Blacksburg
- 14:45and the relationship you two guys have built from that
- 14:48initial plane trip and lunch down in Waco back over and over
- 14:53a year ago now. But let's talk about how that's
- 14:56developed since you became the quarterback coach.
- 14:59What makes that offensive coordinator and quarterback one
- 15:02relationship so special, both personally and then on the
- 15:05field? Yeah, I mean, I, you know, as as
- 15:08simple as this sounds, it's it's just two guys being on the same
- 15:11page, you know, and I feel that right.
- 15:14Understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses,
- 15:17understanding thought process, hey, you know there's there's
- 15:20little things, right when a play call comes in and it gets signal
- 15:23and he sees that he knows exactly what I'm thinking
- 15:25because of how we've gone about our meeting process that we what
- 15:29that plays in the game plan for. I think there's just more, it's
- 15:32more cohesive from from those standpoints.
- 15:36It's a little bit more natural and I think it's also you know
- 15:39being in the room and and understanding him and what he
- 15:42sees well, what fits his eye, you know these these are things
- 15:46he's going to do really well. These are areas we need to
- 15:48improve on and being able to build on those.
- 15:50It's it's really as simple as that, right?
- 15:52Just two guys getting on the same page and ultimately, you
- 15:56know play caller and player that's going to make a decision
- 15:59on every snap that we go out there on offense being on the
- 16:02same page of of really the why behind what we're doing, not
- 16:05necessarily the what and how. All right.
- 16:10I love hearing that. I love hearing the relationship.
- 16:12But I think what you say there is that in that room because you
- 16:15said it, I give that call. He knows exactly what we talked
- 16:18about in that room and he's going to go out there and do it.
- 16:21Let's go to last year, man, because what a season that was.
- 16:25It was a roller coaster. But in the end, what a great
- 16:28stretch in the last two months. And when you look back on it in
- 16:31retrospect of the 2023 season, what area are you looking to
- 16:36most improve into 2024? Yeah.
- 16:40Well number one you're you're saying all the right things that
- 16:43was last year, right. And that's been the you know
- 16:45that's the that's the biggest message right now right.
- 16:48We you know ultimately when we look at it we we you know season
- 16:52still didn't go as we wanted. We were you know we were we're
- 16:55where we were at the end of the year.
- 16:57You know there were some nice things but that was that was
- 16:59just that it was last year we got a brand new team right now
- 17:02there's some experience we can build off of but ultimately when
- 17:06I look at us right now we're going back right.
- 17:08The first thing you do in the offseason before you start going
- 17:10to study other people, you study yourself right?
- 17:12And we're going through a self scout process and we take
- 17:16everything again. Like I always joke about it like
- 17:19you're like you're tearing the house down to the studs and
- 17:21building it back up. So looking at at really the
- 17:23process at how players make decisions on each play, the
- 17:27techniques that we were coaching, how can we coach this
- 17:30better, how can we make it simpler to install.
- 17:32So we're looking at all that and and what I see, there's just so
- 17:35many areas that we just need to tighten up, right.
- 17:38We're obviously going to evolve from a scheme standpoint.
- 17:41There were some, you know, there's some good plays as the
- 17:43season unfolded. But if we can just tighten
- 17:46everything up, if we can understand a little bit more of
- 17:48the why behind what we're doing, if we can get our hat 6 inches
- 17:52over on an outside run, if we can hit those landmarks, there's
- 17:56a lot more yards and a lot more points to go on the field.
- 17:59And that's and again, I'll tie that right back into the thing
- 18:02we started with. That's a beauty of Phase one,
- 18:04right? It's about those things.
- 18:06It's, it's about the first step. It's about not false stepping.
- 18:09It's about the drive off the ball, the release against
- 18:12outside leverage press, right. Where's my hat on this outside
- 18:16run, right? It's about all those things.
- 18:18And really when you look at it's a simple game.
- 18:20If we can tighten up those 100 level things and then apply them
- 18:23to a 400 level play that we're going to present to the defense,
- 18:26we're going to be much better as an offense.
- 18:28And that's really been the message, right?
- 18:30How can we get better at the basics?
- 18:32We can't get bored with being really good at the basics.
- 18:35First step, hand placement, hat placement, release coverage
- 18:38recognition, progression, you know, timing, footwork in the
- 18:41pocket, like all those little things are going to lead us
- 18:45having more success and we're we're always going to look to
- 18:47evolve, right. That's not meaning we're going
- 18:49to roll out and it's going to be the the same look that it always
- 18:52is. You're going to look to evolve.
- 18:54But in the end, no matter what we do schematically, it's going
- 18:57to come down to those basic 100 level things getting executed at
- 19:00a high level. Yeah, you got to have those
- 19:02fundamentals. You got to be able to execute
- 19:04consistently. So if if you're not doing those
- 19:06things, it's going to be hard to kind of take that that next big
- 19:09step and put in some some new wrinkles.
- 19:11So I I can appreciate where you're coming from there.
- 19:14And I I. Love you talking offensive line
- 19:16lingo here because, I mean, this is an offensive line podcast.
- 19:20I played online Division Three back in the early 2000s.
- 19:23So I, I, I, I love all all of the terminology that they're
- 19:27thrown out there. But and I firmly believe this
- 19:30offensive lineman make the best offensive coordinators.
- 19:33I've always said it. We sure hope so.
- 19:36I've I've had I've had a bunch in in in my career and I I I
- 19:40definitely will hold firm to that belief.
- 19:43But you had a head coach when you were at Maryland, Ralph
- 19:45Regent, that you know, we're familiar with this Hokie fans,
- 19:48both from, you know, playing in the in the latter years of his
- 19:52career in the ACC, but also from all of the those times that he
- 19:55shared with Frank Beamer and other stops in his career.
- 20:00He was a dynamite play caller and and he played everything in
- 20:03college himself, starting at quarterback and then you know,
- 20:05finishing his. Career and going closer to the
- 20:07ball. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:09Yeah, he. Kept moving closer to the ball.
- 20:11I don't think he would mind me saying that.
- 20:13Yeah, yeah, so. But you know.
- 20:15I I I. Love that about him and I just
- 20:17wanted to see if you know, what were some of the things from an
- 20:20offensive coordinator and play caller perspective that you
- 20:22learn from Coach Frieden. Coach Frieden #1, he had a huge
- 20:27impact on me #1, getting in the coaching when I was when I was a
- 20:32player at Maryland, I was a a tackle, didn't have a very
- 20:36illustrious career by any stretch as a player.
- 20:38Ended up having a career ending injury in my third year and he's
- 20:43the one that kind of taught me in the coaching, you know, and
- 20:45and one of the one of the best things he ever did for me was
- 20:49early right. I'm starting on the ground floor
- 20:51#1. He told me, you know, you know,
- 20:54he was, he was very crass and to the point he said, hey, you
- 20:56know, you know Tyler, the only the only reason you had a chance
- 20:59to travel and even be in this position was because you were
- 21:02smart, he said. So I feel, I feel good about
- 21:05where you're developing as a as an offensive line coach.
- 21:08So what he did is he put me in a very uncomfortable situation.
- 21:11He had me sit in the quarterback room for two years and and just
- 21:16really expanded my knowledge of the game.
- 21:19But what I can always appreciate about him from that standpoint,
- 21:22I understand, you know how he coached.
- 21:26Is that it? It all starts from the inside
- 21:28out. If you want to be good, that
- 21:29offensive lines got to be a heartbeat of the team, that
- 21:32quarterback being In Sync with decision making and coach
- 21:35Frieden was one of those guys. He could sit in an offensive
- 21:38meeting room and coach everything from the split of the
- 21:41wide receiver to the first step of the left guard to the, you
- 21:44know, to the exchange between the center and the quarterback
- 21:46to him to the right. I mean, it was just impressive
- 21:49what he could do. So I think you know that made a
- 21:52that made a huge impression on me is right when you, when you
- 21:55get into this like really understanding each position in
- 21:58detail, understanding how that all relates to the big picture.
- 22:03So he made a huge impression on me from that standpoint.
- 22:06Then as a play caller the variety the variety of scheme he
- 22:09was able to implement you know in one offense you know when
- 22:12when we were in college everything from triple option
- 22:15concepts like true veer under center to spread elements to RP
- 22:20OS before they were a a buzzword term that everybody likes
- 22:23talking about to you know 2 back power out of 22 personnel.
- 22:26You know I mean he could he could really coach it all and
- 22:29and in great detail. So he, you know, he he did a
- 22:32great job of of just helping me expand my knowledge and really
- 22:35giving me the itch and and and the fire to to want to be a
- 22:38coach. Man, that's awesome.
- 22:41Here, I, I, I also find it so interesting that he asked you to
- 22:44go to the QV room. Now, first of all, you were
- 22:46clearly the tallest guy in that room by miles, right?
- 22:50I know this guy when, hey, when I said when I said that, he gave
- 22:53me a compliment of smart. That only meant that I knew what
- 22:55to do at tackle. And I found out.
- 22:57I I found out really quick. Yeah, I didn't know anything
- 23:01else. You know he had to.
- 23:02He he he broke me down to the studs and built me up again as
- 23:05a. Coach I love that.
- 23:07But it but it shows a lot that he had that trust in you to say
- 23:11I believe you can get in that room in our understanding our
- 23:13concepts because that that does say a lot about him having that
- 23:16belief in you to go in there, man.
- 23:19And let me pivot a little bit because talking about somebody
- 23:22who could put together a Dr. who could put together great play
- 23:25calls last year. Are there any games or drives
- 23:30that stick out to you where you we're going to borrow some from
- 23:35JC Price who was on with us a few weeks ago where you felt
- 23:37like every time you look down on your sheet called to play you
- 23:41rolled A7. Any games like that last year or
- 23:44drives? That there were, there were good
- 23:47moments. I'm not going to remember them
- 23:48all from last year. I'm trying to try to watch, you
- 23:51know, I thought, I thought our guys did a excellent job like
- 23:55thinking back to the Syracuse game, you know, it just seemed
- 23:57like the Russian attack that night the way with the way we
- 24:00were attacking, the way the guys were executing, the way the ball
- 24:02carriers were running, you know, that was just probably a feeling
- 24:07that sticks out. But I think there were, there
- 24:08were multiple instances of that. And I think the, you know, the
- 24:11big, the big thing is, is this all see, how can we make that
- 24:14consistent? You know, how can we become more
- 24:16consistent? And it goes back to all those
- 24:18little things. Awesome love.
- 24:21Hearing that, definitely the Syracuse game run.
- 24:24You know what? It's it's stood out on both
- 24:26sides of the ball. We we said it.
- 24:27We said it all year, man. So last big question here.
- 24:33We don't have him on today, but our analytics band, Sheldon
- 24:35Moss, he said that one of the biggest predicators of next
- 24:39year's outcome is the prior year's outcome.
- 24:42I know as you as a coach, we, we we're trying to forget last
- 24:45season, right? We're trying to forget all of
- 24:46that, right. But and and coaches hate
- 24:49thinking about, you know, how we finished in 2023, you know and
- 24:52all that. But you know, based on a lot of
- 24:55the media outlets, we're looking at a lot of returning production
- 24:58on the offensive side of the ball.
- 24:59As an offensive coordinator, does that type of continuity
- 25:03make your job easier, for lack of a better word?
- 25:07I I don't know if I'd say easier, I'd say exciting.
- 25:09You know, I think it's exciting anytime you've got you know this
- 25:12much returning production and and potential continuity between
- 25:16the the guy that's going to be throwing the football and
- 25:18handing it off and the guys that are going to be around them.
- 25:20I think that's something we're excited to build upon.
- 25:23You know it really has you know I I'll say it both ways, right.
- 25:26The continuity I think is is important what we're all excited
- 25:30about, but it's being able to take the next steps with those
- 25:33guys, right, making sure we're doing a good job developing the
- 25:36individual player to be able to come and do the the group and be
- 25:39a better player to make our offense better, right.
- 25:41So we're you know we're full steam ahead on that but but
- 25:44certainly the the continuities is is great and I think like the
- 25:49the big thing that always sticks in my mind, right, that all adds
- 25:52up to potential, right. And it's our job as a coaching
- 25:55staff and it's our job as we go into phase one and we go into
- 25:59phase two and we and we accomplish these things
- 26:01throughout the year. We got to turn that potential
- 26:03into production. So right now that that's how I
- 26:06look at it, right. There's yeah there's there's a
- 26:08there's a ton of potential you can look at it a lot of
- 26:10different ways but we got to strip it down to the studs.
- 26:12We got to build it back up. We got to build it back up
- 26:14better than before and make sure that we go out and produce on
- 26:17the field. And I'm, I keep hearing the
- 26:19studs thing and I keep thinking like all these guys coming.
- 26:22What's my go? To right now it is, man, it's
- 26:24great. It's a it's a it's a great thing
- 26:26that anyone that's ever built anything understands.
- 26:28But I love you keep saying that because for all those guys, the
- 26:32conduit of the guys coming back, you can look and say you know
- 26:34what you do well let's get that better.
- 26:37What don't you do well that's how can we make that better?
- 26:39Because if you make that better, the stuff you got going good for
- 26:43you already is going to be there.
- 26:45And I love you saying that because it it tells me that
- 26:49we're not looking to be seven wins again.
- 26:51We're looking for better. And I think that's the way the
- 26:53staff has looked at since day one.
- 26:55All right, easy question to to to round it out here today.
- 26:58We appreciate your time, Tyler. We know you're busy, man, but
- 27:03what is your food spot in Blacksburg?
- 27:06It's one we asked every coach or player that ever comes on with
- 27:09us. Food spot I, you know, I got.
- 27:12I got two. If I want wings, it's PKS.
- 27:15All right, look, I'm a wing guy. Are.
- 27:18You a cheetah wing guy? You know what?
- 27:20I do like the cheetah wings. I'm not going to lie that that
- 27:23what it I learned that. I learned that from cheetah.
- 27:27All right. But I do like the cheetah wings.
- 27:28I'm a regular medium or hot Buffalo guy though.
- 27:32All right. I like a little medium or hot
- 27:33Buffalo with some blue cheese. And then if you know if I want a
- 27:37an Italian meal I really, I'm, I'm a big fan of Avelino's good
- 27:41good spot in town man. They got a great steak a little
- 27:43pasta on the side. You know if you're if you're not
- 27:46yo-yo diet and carb cutting, which I'm doing right now, you
- 27:49know, that's a that's a good spot.
- 27:51But you can always go with the steak and veggies.
- 27:53There we go. And I I appreciate you bringing
- 27:55it up because that's a good one and that's one I I haven't heard
- 27:57a coach or player say yet. So you got a new one on the
- 28:00board for? It Coach Bowling, we know you're
- 28:03busy today as it every day. We appreciate you taking the
- 28:06time out of the day to spend with us here at the Boundary
- 28:08Corner Podcast. Good luck in this upcoming
- 28:11season and in the spring game. We hope to see you there and you
- 28:15take care, Sir. We appreciate it, appreciate
- 28:17y'all support and I look forward to being on again sometime.
- 28:20Awesome. Thank you, Coach.
- 28:21Thank you. OK.
- 28:22All right. Y'all have a good one.
- 28:24So we got to sit there and talk to him and obviously we threw
- 28:27some questions off of him, like that Ron Crook thing.
- 28:32I came out of nowhere. I was expecting to go to the
- 28:34next question. Next thing you know, he's
- 28:36talking about crooking what he does and it's like, you know
- 28:38what should let the man go. But let's throw it to both of
- 28:41y'all. We'll start with Shelton here,
- 28:43because John, your name got mentioned from this interview
- 28:46and the things he's talking about.
- 28:47You know what? What's your feelings on it?
- 28:52My feeling is I love it. I think it's first of all it's
- 28:55great to have an offensive coordinator that is so willing
- 28:58to be you know to do these interviews and and be open with
- 29:01with media outlets like us. And it hasn't always been the
- 29:04case. But you know, I just, I just
- 29:06love hearing him talk about you know, the the complexities in
- 29:09the RP OS. You know, just the wrinkles and
- 29:12the tags that they put in. Because you know I was talking
- 29:14with a coaching friend and he and he mentioned how you know
- 29:16with RP OS you've got layers to it.
- 29:18You've got different tags. You know just because something
- 29:20looks like a simple RPO doesn't mean that it actually is because
- 29:23it can go different ways. So just those those types of
- 29:25complexities and seeing how you know the the the quarterback
- 29:28Kyron drones kind of you know progressed with those throughout
- 29:31the course of the season making reeds you know making those
- 29:34those decisions for himself. I just I was super impressed
- 29:37with how they how they made those little adjustments
- 29:39throughout the course of the year and it was great to hear
- 29:41him talk about just you know to to kind of validate what we saw
- 29:44in terms of the in terms of the progression.
- 29:45So I thought it was it was really good.
- 29:47I I just, I just love his eye for football really.
- 29:50Kelly, what about you, man? What Caught your ears on this
- 29:53interview with Coach Bowen? First of all, Sheldon is fucking
- 29:57smart. When he talked, I'll be man.
- 30:01I'll be tuned in when he be. When he be talking, he'd be
- 30:05hitting me with them words. I said, Boy, that boy's smart.
- 30:07But couple things. We're going to get into #1.
- 30:12We might be Thanos, you know. We might be Thanos.
- 30:17Offensive coordinator, head coach, QB, one line coach, wide
- 30:25receiver coach. We got to get Marvin, man.
- 30:28That's it. We we need the defensive.
- 30:31We need the defensive coordinator on this show.
- 30:34You know I'm sitting here looking at it like, man, BCP
- 30:38them came a long way, man. You know Brian give yourself a
- 30:41pat on the back, man. Curtis, give yourself a pat on
- 30:46the back. Great interview, guys.
- 30:47I'm sorry I couldn't be there, but y'all did a good job.
- 30:51Second thing that stood out to me, I got to get Tebow and get
- 30:56him around some old black people.
- 30:58We ain't eating no blue cheese. He was doing good until he
- 31:03mentioned the blue cheese. You got to get ranch, man.
- 31:06We got to get you with some ranch, OK?
- 31:09Yeah, we got that out of the way.
- 31:10We got all that stuff out of the way.
- 31:11Out of the way. Even before hearing him talk,
- 31:16you know, interview, even before hearing him, you know going to
- 31:19what our offense does good and what he does and what he's
- 31:23doing. He, you know, talked about
- 31:24tearing it down to the studs. What I like about him is his
- 31:27ability to recruit because it doesn't matter what you run, it
- 31:30doesn't matter how great of a mind you are.
- 31:33If you're not getting players in, it don't matter.
- 31:37He's winning. Got players in here, He's a
- 31:40very, he's a very relatable guy. He's very open and honest, just
- 31:44like pry. We've talked to Chris, shout out
- 31:47to Chris, he's on here. We talked to Kevin just about
- 31:51how he is. You know, with the players, with
- 31:54the parents, you know, with the other coaches, that's awesome to
- 31:59to have an offensive coordinator that is, you know, a really
- 32:03sharp guy like Robbie said, but also a really open guy, kind of
- 32:07what Shelton said. You know, open with the media
- 32:08and things like that. But one thing, you know, the the
- 32:12main thing that stood out is when he talks about, you know,
- 32:15building from the outside, from the inside out, you know that
- 32:18line inside of that line, you know, the the quarterback, that
- 32:24great job, you know what I'm saying?
- 32:26His mindset, what he has moving forward, he's not even thinking
- 32:29about last year, you know what I'm saying?
- 32:32He's washed his hands with. He can't even give y'all.
- 32:34No examples at the moment because we're moving forward and
- 32:37that's how you got to be because when we had Karen on, he talked
- 32:40about it and we'll talk about a little bit more.
- 32:43It's a 12 team playoff next year.
- 32:45It's not far fetched to get into that playoff for anybody right
- 32:50now you know especially you know especially ACC team.
- 32:53So great interview man. It was good good to hear him
- 32:56talk about the things that that that they're doing moving
- 32:59forward. What you thinking about it,
- 33:01Curtis? Well, it's to me, it was just
- 33:03talking to him how Lucy was and and Sheldon, you made a point
- 33:06about, you know, having the, the, the abilities to interview
- 33:09the the coaches now and the players without, and there's no
- 33:12pushback anymore. But there were a few times on
- 33:14there we were getting ready to go to another question and he
- 33:17interjected like he interjected like he wanted to give more
- 33:20information out there. And you can tell he enjoys what
- 33:24he does because talking like the offensive listen, when he
- 33:27started that helmet 6 inches outside, I thought Brian was
- 33:30going to get all giddy. I thought we were going to be
- 33:32able to do an hour long talk about hand placement and kick
- 33:37steps. You know you you only you
- 33:38wanted. To man I you know we we could we
- 33:40could have a conversation for a good while if we're just going
- 33:43to talk all of the wine technique.
- 33:45But I mean the thing that impressed me and I mean you know
- 33:47when I was looking at that kind of retrospective question and
- 33:50crafting that about, you know, Coach Frieden, I was like, all
- 33:53right. So I I wanted to tie that in
- 33:56because I felt that was important with having that
- 33:57connection with another coach that had a really close
- 34:01connection with with Frank Beamer.
- 34:03Obviously between the Citadel, Murray State and just all those
- 34:08all those games they played against each other when they
- 34:09were in the ACC before Frieden was was out in Maryland.
- 34:13And you know having that with the James Franklin connection at
- 34:17Maryland and then all of that I just I I felt that was
- 34:20important. But kind of what we got out of
- 34:21that is, you know, we we've got Tyler Bowen in the quarterback
- 34:26room now and that started at Maryland.
- 34:30Yeah. And that that's kind of the
- 34:32crazy full circle stuff that we're, you know, we're dealing
- 34:35with here and that we were able to kind of talk about and hash
- 34:37out there. So that was really impressive
- 34:39for me. Yeah, and then the RPOTTOPRO.
- 34:44Yeah, get it right. It ain't just an RTO every damn
- 34:48time. Y'all.
- 34:50And you learn that here on the Boundary Corner podcast today,
- 34:52there's multiple variations of what they're doing.
- 34:55And but again, overall just talking with Tyler again seems
- 35:00very genuine. You know, obviously Avellino's I
- 35:05I looked up the menu. I mean it's a it's an Italian
- 35:08place where they they do steak, they do all sorts of food.
- 35:12We might hit it up the next time we are in Blacksburg Boys.
- 35:16But again, it was. Great.
- 35:18Huh. Spring game.
- 35:20Spring game we going to try. Brian's already there.
- 35:22He's definitely. I've already booked the hotel.
- 35:24Man, we we, we we in. He's in.
- 35:27I'm going to try. I'm going to try.
- 35:28I hope you try. I know you busy though, because
- 35:31they got you traveling from work all over the.
- 35:33Place All right. I'm going to try people trying
- 35:35to get up in there. People try to find a conference
- 35:37in Roanoke that week. Yeah, right here to do my
- 35:39training. Right that'd be.
- 35:42Hilarious. All right, so again, we again
- 35:45appreciate Coach Bowen. Also shout out Travis.
- 35:48Well, we had a couple minutes talk with him as we were
- 35:50getting. Travis has been, and I, and I've
- 35:53said it a couple times, Travis has been such a great help to
- 35:57us, getting the players, getting the coaches, working with us at
- 36:01all points in time. And it's funny because, you
- 36:03know, Brian, we go back 25 years, man.
- 36:06We were watching as we were, you know, young teens.
- 36:08We were watching Travis Wells talk about sports on Channel 7.
- 36:12Oh, yeah, we e-mail him, we talk to him on Zoom occasionally say
- 36:16what's up? World's crazy man.
- 36:18All right. We are now going to take a quick
- 36:20ad from our digital partners and Main Street Pharmacy and then
- 36:24talk a little hoops when we get back.
- 36:27I can probably save you a lot of money and I can take a lot
- 36:29better care of you. That's pretty much it.
- 36:32My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm a pharmacist.
- 36:34I own and operate Main Street Pharmacy here in downtown
- 36:36Blacksburg. My brother's a pharmacist.
- 36:38I'm a pharmacist. My uncle's a pharmacist.
- 36:40My dad's a pharmacist. I remember he would give me M
- 36:42and Ms. to count in little pill counters.
- 36:45This is something I've always done, and I'm just lucky that
- 36:48what I know so well is something that I can do and feel good
- 36:51about it and get back to people. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 36:54defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 36:57you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 37:00Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 37:03I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 37:04doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 37:06counter. If there's something that isn't
- 37:09commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 37:11in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 37:14that, we'll make it tailor made medications.
- 37:16Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 37:18What motivates me? I get to take care of people and
- 37:20live in Blacksburg. That's all neat.
- 37:25As we take a quick break, we'd like to tell you about getting

- 37:46Episode. All righty.
- 37:48So let's roll in and talk a little Hokies hoops and let's
- 37:51talk with these lady Hokies 'cause I'm starting to count the
- 37:54games here. Y'all that's 123456789.
- 37:59It's a 10/10 in a row since the loss of Duke.
- 38:04They go into Louisville Sunday afternoon and they beat the
- 38:08living hell out of Louisville. They beat them by 16.
- 38:11It could have been more. I mean, y'all is it?
- 38:15Does it feel like 2023 again? They're getting hot right down
- 38:19the stretch. Sheldon, I know you've been
- 38:21paying attention, man. What's what's going on with the
- 38:23ladies? And I mean, is it, are those
- 38:25additions? Is it starting to click?
- 38:29I think it is. And funny enough, you know it
- 38:31came under similar circumstances last year because you recall
- 38:34Tech got blown up by Duke last year and that's when they won I
- 38:37think 14 straight to close out the the season before losing the
- 38:40Final Four. And then this year they get
- 38:42blown up by Duke again and then now they're starting, I think
- 38:44they have one eight in a row or nine in a row.
- 38:46So kind of funny how that works out.
- 38:48But yeah, I think they've, you know, they've really started
- 38:51clicking throughout this course of this season.
- 38:52Kenny's always been talking about how, you know, it takes
- 38:55time for for the incoming transfer players to gel and sort
- 38:59of find their roles. And I think now they're starting
- 39:01to find their roles. And you know, part of that is
- 39:03rotations. Part of that is I think you know
- 39:05players knowing where they need to be defensively because Kenny
- 39:08Brooks runs, you know sort of a a version of the pack line
- 39:12defense where you know it's it's all predicated on help.
- 39:15And he said before this team is not the best at individual
- 39:18defense. one-on-one defense they would not do very well, but they
- 39:21do play very, very good team defense and that only comes
- 39:24through, you know, having game experience and knowing where you
- 39:27need to be at all times. So I think, I think as they as
- 39:30they get more minutes together, as they get more more experience
- 39:33and they play together as a team, you know, you're starting
- 39:35to see them really sort of come together.
- 39:37And I think, you know, Kenny's done just a fantastic job
- 39:40coaching these past few seasons. You know he is.
- 39:43Even if you just take out how good he is as a recruiter.
- 39:46He is, in my opinion, one of the best coaches in in women's
- 39:48college basketball for sure. Tally, we know Tally.
- 39:53Y'all Couple weeks ago basketball heard him.
- 39:56He ain't turned to, he ain't turned to pitch on.
- 39:58So Tally it is nine in a row. They're ranked #8 in the
- 40:01country. And again, does it feel like
- 40:032023 when when when y'all go starting to kick off?
- 40:06You know, I pay attention to the ladies.
- 40:08That's real basketball. You know, I pay attention to
- 40:11them. I watch my girls, Georgia and
- 40:14and and and and Liz. You know, they they they doing
- 40:17what we what needs to be done on the court, you know what I'm
- 40:20saying? So I'm paying attention to them.
- 40:23Kenny, keep doing your thing, ladies.
- 40:25Keep showing out. I got a little bit of a bone to
- 40:28pick. I don't want to understand how
- 40:30we keep on getting put behind North Carolina State.
- 40:34When? We done beat that ass a couple
- 40:38times. I I know they only lost three
- 40:40games. They're a pretty good team.
- 40:41They are. But two of them, three losses
- 40:43then came to the Hokies. Man, if y'all want to come out
- 40:46with these predictions, you know what I'm saying?
- 40:48Put us in front of them, that's all I'm saying.
- 40:50I watched a little bit of the yeah, yeah, I watched a little
- 40:53bit of the of the Duke game towards the end and it's just,
- 40:59man, they don't flinch, you know what I'm saying?
- 41:01Like when it's time for a big shot, you know, Georgia,
- 41:05Georgia's hitting shots and Lee is just, she looks like Dirk out
- 41:09there, man. She's hitting that turn around
- 41:12off one leg, you know, and you can't block it.
- 41:15She looks like Dirk out there. So it's been fun to watch, man.
- 41:18And they just, they play their strengths, they play together
- 41:21and they have the skill set to, you know, go deep in the
- 41:24tournament. So I'll say that about the
- 41:27ladies. Kudos to them all.
- 41:28Right, Brian. What you got, man?
- 41:30Yeah, I'll say this. I think one thing I'm seeing
- 41:33maybe compared to last year is that when it's crunch time,
- 41:37there's like 0 panic. Like they they are, they are
- 41:40cool, they know they got it. They know that they they're in
- 41:43control. So when when it does get to
- 41:47those points where the game gets a little tighter, there's a run
- 41:49from the other side. They're able to kind of quickly
- 41:52counter that, stay confident, stay, stay within the game plan,
- 41:59you know, never really any sort of panic mode for them.
- 42:02So I think that's that's a big thing that I'm seeing from this
- 42:05team at this point. And you know, you start getting
- 42:07those transfer portal folks that are starting to gel within the
- 42:11system. You're seeing it a lot on both
- 42:14ends. So offense I think gets gets a
- 42:16lot of the the hype there, but I think defense is where it's
- 42:19showing up the most. I think defensively they've just
- 42:23been a lot tighter, especially in the last several weeks.
- 42:27Yeah, me and Brian. Me and Brian talked about that
- 42:29the other day, about these ladies, about, you know, Sumel
- 42:32and Eck and Wenzel starting to take roles within the team.
- 42:37And Shelton, you just said it, Kenny said it earlier.
- 42:39We've got a gel and you're starting to see that gelling
- 42:42factor. And now it's not all on Liz and
- 42:45it's not all on Georgia. You know, Wenzel had eight
- 42:48points on Sunday. That's that's huge because we
- 42:52know Wenzel is Georgia's backup. And if she can come in and get
- 42:54eight points every time and take that pressure off Georgia.
- 42:57I mean, me and Brown were just saying, what if they put both of
- 43:01them on the court at the same time and you let Georgia run
- 43:03around like you want to talk about just making a defense like
- 43:08stretch like this between Liz on the post and the way Georgia can
- 43:11shoot threes. I'm going to be interested to
- 43:13see what goes on down the stretch, but these ladies are
- 43:16playing fabulous. Yeah.
- 43:17And I think I think another thing to talk about is just the
- 43:21number of folks in the rotation. I mean last year was pretty much
- 43:24a a six person rotation pretty much for the whole year and like
- 43:28you're seeing more of a more of eight this year.
- 43:31I think that's going to play play good in in the when we get
- 43:35the tournament time because when you have eight you can't just
- 43:38get worn down, you can't get beat up and that was really the
- 43:41only thing that was beating us last year was just that fatigue
- 43:45factor. I think you get 8, you know an 8
- 43:48rotation. I think that's going to be a big
- 43:50boom when it comes to playoff time.
- 43:52Yeah, and they they also have depth at the right spots.
- 43:55So they've got, you know, Carly Winslow couldn't come in as a
- 43:58backup point guard and they've also got Claire's track at Ford
- 44:00who can back up Liz and we'll see.
- 44:02You know Claire and Liz play at the same time.
- 44:04So, you know, last year I think it was, it was mainly Gazer Greg
- 44:08who came off the bench as sort of like a defensive stopper.
- 44:10But now you know, you've got, you know, a backup for your for
- 44:14your forward and your point guard.
- 44:15I mean that's a that's a really big luxury.
- 44:16And you know, obviously with with Liz and Claire on at the
- 44:19same time, that's just got to be a nightmare for for teams to try
- 44:22to rebound and defend against. Absolutely.
- 44:26All right, so let's put the ladies, They're up here, They're
- 44:28on our pedestal right now. And let's talk about the men's
- 44:31team. Shelton foreshadowed this a
- 44:35little earlier, and I'm sure everybody's seen the score.
- 44:38Hokies win last night, 7541, of the number 21 ranked UVA
- 44:44Cavaliers. We'll repeat that again, 75 to
- 44:4841. Does anybody, Sheldon, tally
- 44:53what's the explanation for this team?
- 44:55Because you don't go shell somebody like that and have some
- 44:59of the games we've had. I mean they play, yeah, we
- 45:03talked about it earlier. They play good to great at home
- 45:05and then the away is not not look very good.
- 45:08So I I don't think we probably thought that we'd see the
- 45:12extreme of that that we saw last night.
- 45:17But you know, I'll take it. So what did you see?
- 45:22You clearly watched it and or I don't know if you watched it
- 45:24live or you called it on, you know, recording.
- 45:27What did you. I mean to me, you know a team
- 45:31who's our record? You know, I don't give a shit if
- 45:34it's your rival or not. You don't beat the shit out of
- 45:36somebody like that. Yeah, I mean it was a it was a
- 45:40crazy game and they were hanging on all cylinders.
- 45:41I thought you know offensively Tech made, they just they always
- 45:44made the extra pass and they you know they they hit shots when
- 45:47they had open books. And you know, I think I think
- 45:50defensively they played very well.
- 45:52They they shut down Beekman completely.
- 45:55They shut down Jake Groves who is UVA's best 3 point shooter.
- 45:57He's hitting like 50% this year which is I think is 6th best in
- 46:01the country. He did not have a single
- 46:03three-point attempt in this game.
- 46:04So they did. They did a fantastic job on them
- 46:06and those are really, you know, UVA's two biggest threats
- 46:09outside of Isaac Mcneely. But I think, you know, big
- 46:12picture UVA to me is a team that's been skating on really,
- 46:16really thin ice. They've won a bunch of close
- 46:17ball games. All of their losses are by very
- 46:20large margins, which is why the metrics the metrics don't like
- 46:23them a lot. So to me, I know they've got
- 46:25twenty wins and I I know they're a good team, but I just never
- 46:29really saw them as a as a real contending team as far as the
- 46:32post season goes. So you know, Tech was favored by
- 46:35three you know, I thought they would win.
- 46:36I did not expect them to win by this much, but I think it's a
- 46:39combination of, you know, a team that usually plays well at home
- 46:42playing against a team that really always plays poorly on
- 46:44the road in UVA. Talit, did you look up the
- 46:49stats, did you look up the highlights or they they still on
- 46:52there ain't? No need to.
- 46:53It ain't no need to. When you beat the shit out of
- 46:55somebody 75 to 41, that means you made some shots.
- 47:00They didn't make shit, Sheldon. Sheldon, how many threes did did
- 47:06UVA hit? One or two, Yeah, probably.
- 47:11OK. They probably hit one or two
- 47:13threes. That means somebody was running
- 47:15them off the line. We probably shot 50 threes.
- 47:19I don't know how many threes we shot. 2323 will.
- 47:23We hit about 10. We hit about 10888.
- 47:26Of 20. Three.
- 47:27So the problem is we live. We live and die by the three.
- 47:32But a lot of times when you live and by the live and die by the
- 47:35three, the defense is out of position getting back trying to
- 47:40stop the other team without watching any of this game.
- 47:45They just play better defense in this game and they ran UVA off
- 47:48the spots. And it comes down to probably,
- 47:51you know, playing at home, playing at home and you know
- 47:54being comfortable there and a rivalry game is that is exactly
- 47:59what it is. No matter what sport it is you
- 48:01you just you got to throw the records out of the window and
- 48:04you just got to go play ball. Then sometimes when the team
- 48:07start to get beat, it's like they give up and probably what
- 48:11UVA did is like fuck it the same night because they only hit two
- 48:14threes with, you know, as many shooters as they have or how
- 48:18good they kind of shoot the three.
- 48:21It's probably a rough night for them.
- 48:22So they scored 41 points. That high man probably had six
- 48:25points. The.
- 48:27Second, third high score was six points, so you ain't far off.
- 48:32And what's wildlife when you look at the the Hokies box
- 48:35score? I mean, nobody really went off.
- 48:38It was just a complete dominant effort across the board.
- 48:41I mean, probably Nickel had one of his better games overall, but
- 48:45I mean, outside of that, no one really went off relative to
- 48:49their normal average. It was just everybody was doing
- 48:52something. There wasn't really a weak spot
- 48:54in the lineup. Well, when you when you got a
- 48:56team like Virginia Tech, you you have to have a game like that to
- 49:00win. Like that's the way that they
- 49:02have to win because they don't have the guy or a guy.
- 49:06Now what we talked about earlier is like you have to have
- 49:09everybody clicking on our cylinders just to you know I
- 49:12would say to to to play at a high level and win a game.
- 49:15But again sometimes when the offense is going it, it
- 49:19translates to defense so and vice versa.
- 49:22So you you, you don't have to have somebody go for 30 points
- 49:26or 25 points. If everybody's getting 10 to 14
- 49:29or 11 here and you know 8 here and everybody's doing that.
- 49:33If you're getting that poured in from everybody then that's
- 49:37that's kind of your formula to win and that's it's not a huge
- 49:43difference. It is a huge difference when you
- 49:45look at it from the sports aspect of somebody being a 20
- 49:49win team to A-15 win team. But the skill level and the
- 49:53talent is not like super different.
- 49:55When you look at the NCAA basketball, men's basketball of
- 49:59A-15 win team to a A20 win team, it just came down to somebody
- 50:04won some close games and somebody lost some close games.
- 50:07So I'm not saying like the, you know, the Hokies are horrible.
- 50:10I'm never watching them again. But it's just like this year
- 50:14when it was time to go win a game, we just didn't do it.
- 50:18We just didn't do it over and over.
- 50:20We didn't do the ones we should have won.
- 50:23That's that's the frustrating part because I think we look.
- 50:27Iowa State's a top 120 ranked team now.
- 50:29We beat them. We just smoked to UVA.
- 50:31We've had Vermont's always a good smaller school.
- 50:34We beat them. It's those little ones.
- 50:37It's Miami. It's the Notre Dame's.
- 50:38It's those ones where it's like if if this team wins those three
- 50:44or four games, 19 and 19 and seven and we're sitting here,
- 50:49shell 19 and seven are the Hokies in.
- 50:52I mean, depending on how you distribute the wins, I would say
- 50:54it's a pretty, pretty solid chance.
- 50:56Right. So what was frustrated tally
- 50:59more is it's not that we can't beat the good teams, it's you
- 51:03see that Miami game and you have the lead and it's just like it's
- 51:06a double digit lead and y'all couldn't close the sound the
- 51:08last 8 minutes. Are you kidding me?
- 51:11All right, sorry here. All right.
- 51:12So that's the last time. I'm sorry, I'm.
- 51:15I'm getting off of it because it's not.
- 51:17Sheldon, I know you got to go, but go ahead and plug it when
- 51:20it's going to be coming out and stuff.
- 51:23Yeah, so I wish I knew exactly. Within the next two days for
- 51:26sure on the on the key play just do a just do a little breakdown
- 51:30of the game talk about what the Hookies well did well
- 51:32defensively and maybe give some projections for you know going
- 51:36forward just what they need to do to to make determine
- 51:38obviously it's going to be, it's going to be a tough task.
- 51:39I think they're probably going to have to win, you know, win
- 51:41out in the regular season essentially.
- 51:43But you know, the door's open. I think it's about, you know,
- 51:4520% chance last time I checked. So I mean the stranger things
- 51:48have happened, but we'll we'll see how it goes.
- 51:49I think that's up from the last time we talked.
- 51:51I can. Say, I guess that's that's
- 51:53progress. We're going to let Sheldon go
- 51:56and in the words. Of Louise Christmas.
- 51:57You're saying there's a chance, even if it's a small one, And
- 52:01there's a chance. All right.
- 52:02Here we. Go, Sheldon, get out there.
- 52:03Get some rest. Finish.
- 52:04That article up. Thanks for joining us with a lot
- 52:06of night, man. Yep, thanks guys.
- 52:08Appreciate the show. All righty, we got just a few.
- 52:11More things to hit here and since the last time we talked,
- 52:16we got a couple more crews. Boys, we got a couple more
- 52:19crews. So let's talk about them real
- 52:21quick here, both from Green Run high School down in the 757
- 52:26Virginia Beach and I want to start with Jayden answer Jayden
- 52:30Anderson, five 11160 LB. Wide receiver.
- 52:34A lot of good offers here. Had looks from Auburn, Florida,
- 52:37Georgia, South Carolina, Miami. If you know where Green Run is,
- 52:44that's where Brody played. So he was effectively the second
- 52:48wide receiver there and Brian Talley, y'all got to kind of
- 52:52look at him. Talley, I'm going to let you go
- 52:53first because there was something you noticed about some
- 52:56of his tape that. He's only a three star in 87,
- 53:02right? Now, but there was something you
- 53:03saw on the tape that probably kept him down, but I want you to
- 53:06mention that first. Yeah.
- 53:07So you know, he he's. Kind of a a gadget player right
- 53:10now from what I've seen. He's playing wide receiver.
- 53:13He had a, you know, some, I don't know exactly what his
- 53:16stats was, but had some good production now.
- 53:19But he also was playing quarterback, you know what I'm
- 53:22saying? So if you're evaluating him,
- 53:23it's kind of when you're playing multiple positions, sometimes
- 53:26it's harder to get that true evaluation of where you are
- 53:30compared to the other people playing that position.
- 53:32So he was doing some Wildcat quarterback, but he's electric
- 53:36with the ball in his hands. He's fast, you know he he's a,
- 53:40he's a not a very big guy, but he's he runs bigger than what he
- 53:45is like he's not scared to deliver a blow.
- 53:48So he he, he was watching a little bit of his film, got to
- 53:52be excited like you can't miss on kids like that.
- 53:55So again Chris put it in the Chris put it in the chat right
- 53:59now. He said he played quarterback in
- 54:00the playoffs. You know what I'm saying?
- 54:02It's like he, he he wants the ball in his hand.
- 54:04So when you have kids like that that are interested in coming to
- 54:10help build, you don't let them go.
- 54:13Because a kid like that was the kid who in the past we would
- 54:18overlook and he'd go to Wake Forest or North Carolina and
- 54:23we've seen him for four years or three years and he'd absolutely
- 54:26murder us every time we played. So do not let them leave.
- 54:32You know what I'm saying? If they're won't me in, you let
- 54:34them in. So I'm I'm I'm really glad to to
- 54:37start the class off with you know some some positive traction
- 54:41and again like you said Curtis looking at his offer list
- 54:45because I look at, I mean none of that stuff means anything to
- 54:48you. Get on there and produce.
- 54:49You know they still got a hold of the year, senior year to go
- 54:52in. But if you look at offers, man,
- 54:55like the kid has got offers, he's he's like, like you said,
- 54:59Auburn's there. He's got a couple of more people
- 55:01who are big time offers that was looking at him.
- 55:03So I'm glad we went on to snatch them up 100%, Brian, What'd you
- 55:07see from the table Would? You like?
- 55:09Yeah, I mean to piggyback off telly.
- 55:11There, I mean talking about his versatility, but also this is
- 55:14going to be probably a year where he's going to get a lot
- 55:16more opportunity at that wide receiver spot.
- 55:18That might bump his rankings up as he kind of progresses through
- 55:22that. But yeah, the thing I see is let
- 55:25me let me throw something out before you.
- 55:27Finish. Yeah, because we hit on it a
- 55:29little bit. But I'm looking at just his
- 55:31offers right now per 247. So if they wrong, y'all jump on
- 55:36their ass, not mine. They say Auburn offer, Boston
- 55:41College, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Liberty, Marshall, Miami, Old
- 55:49Dominion, South Carolina, West Virginia Temple.
- 55:52It's a good list. It's it's offer list.
- 55:55It's his good list. Now I'm going to say it 1.
- 55:59Time Y'all don't. Even have to say nothing.
- 56:01We can let Brian finish talking. What if he chose George?
- 56:05What if he chose Georgia? Go ahead, go ahead.
- 56:10That's all I'm going to say. Tally's fallen by the bump
- 56:12there. A little bump.
- 56:13That would happen A big bump, a little bump 939390. 3. 6.2 easy.
- 56:20Yeah, yeah. And and tally's right.
- 56:22Right about that and looking at him, I I like your skill set.
- 56:26He's got really good speed. I think he's a guy that could
- 56:31come in as kind. Of a tweener he could.
- 56:33He could be a slot guy. He could be kind of an outside
- 56:36#2. I think with with with his body
- 56:40and his frame, I think especially if he he's able to
- 56:42put on a little more weight, I think that's something that he'd
- 56:44be capable of doing. But that speed, I mean you can't
- 56:48coach speed. I mean you you can get a little
- 56:50better, but if you're fast, you're going to be fast and
- 56:54falling it here, you're going to be a four-star.
- 56:56Yeah, I mean, we we we talked about it off.
- 56:58Camera. We said, you know, it's it's
- 56:59he's going to be a four-star by. By the time it's all said and
- 57:02done that's been our, that's been our inclination as soon as
- 57:05he was on our radar, so you know Chris backing it up that's
- 57:09that's big time if anybody. Yeah, if.
- 57:12Anybody doesn't know who, Chris? Is his son is Brody Adams and he
- 57:16played at Green Run. So he's watched these kids for
- 57:20years probably. You know, I talk to Chris all
- 57:23the time and you know, he's giving me some knowledge on kind
- 57:26of you know, what these kids can do and and and what kind of
- 57:29young men they are and their skill set that we haven't even
- 57:32seen. So he knows what he's talking
- 57:35about as far as watching them go ahead, Curtis.
- 57:38All I was going to say is they got a couple.
- 57:39Things clocked here for him like and you talked about y'all saw
- 57:43him doing a lot of different things last year. 48 passes for
- 57:46over 1200 yards. Brian, do the math on that for
- 57:49me real quick. That is an ungodly yards per
- 57:54catch. 50 total T DS300 on the ground. 18 total T DS running
- 58:00and passing. What's that?
- 58:01What's that? Yards per catch that got to be
- 58:03over 20. Oh, you got you.
- 58:05Get me to do math. Well, I told you do.
- 58:09That I'm gonna let you handle it, 1200.
- 58:11Yards. You said 48 catches. 48 catches
- 58:14almost. 13125 A. Catch 25 A Catch.
- 58:19I. Don't care if that.
- 58:20If that's green run, that's 5A that's up there.
- 58:23He ain't playing the little boys you know in Bob Warner that
- 58:30means either. Every time he catches the ball,
- 58:32he is making moves. What Y'all have already said
- 58:35y'all saw on the tape. He's electric with the ball,
- 58:37he's electric. That says A.
- 58:39Lot I I think Chris is right. I think you know it is maybe he
- 58:43gets a bump eventually for us. Yeah, I mean, you know, we talk
- 58:47about. Guys being fast and we talk
- 58:48about guys being quick. He's a little bit of both,
- 58:50right? Yeah, he's got, he's got area
- 58:53quickness, but he also has top end speed.
- 58:55All righty, let's talk about the.
- 58:57Other gentleman that committed from Green Run to Virginia Tech
- 59:02mileage. Harold a 510 and a half 165 LB.
- 59:05Quarterback. An 86 rated guy top 25 in the
- 59:09state of Virginia. No composite yet or like look at
- 59:12the composite but 247 puts him in an 86.
- 59:15Brian, real quick, what you see on tape from knowledge, Yeah, I
- 59:20mean, I, I. Like this player, man.
- 59:21He's I think he's going to be kind of a big time player for us
- 59:24when he gets there, really good skills good in coverage.
- 59:31I'm not not afraid to to get in there and throw a lick.
- 59:34So I mean it's the type of guy that we are have been kind of
- 59:37bringing in. There's that kind of cheetah
- 59:39brand where you know got got that dog where you want to get
- 59:43out there play that man coverage as much as you can but also not
- 59:47not afraid to put a little lick on you when you need to Nice.
- 59:51What about you, Tyler? Just see you and talk with
- 59:52Chris. Yeah, first of all, first of
- 59:55all, badass. Name Shout out to his family?
- 59:58Yeah. Badass.
- 59:58Name. I didn't even know how to
- 59:59pronounce it. Chris had to tell me.
- 1:00:02Badass name and his name kind of for me suits what he does like
- 1:00:06he his knowledge of the game seems to be a little bit of
- 1:00:09ahead of his time. I I seen him, you know just
- 1:00:15sideline interceptions able to toe tap.
- 1:00:18You know stuff from the back of the end zone.
- 1:00:20You know, you know, knowing where he's at on the field.
- 1:00:24You know, knowing when when the quarterback starts to scramble,
- 1:00:27knowing to get to certain positions and certain spots.
- 1:00:29So it's kind of playing all over that, all over that secondary
- 1:00:33and his knowledge of the game is what kind of, what kind of got
- 1:00:37me. He's a smaller kid.
- 1:00:38Again, smaller kid, but I don't want to compare him to.
- 1:00:43Anybody yet but. If I kind of looked at what he
- 1:00:46does and what he's looking like, he kind of reminds me of, like
- 1:00:49Monsoor when we first seen him, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:00:52Like when we first seen him and we didn't know exactly what he
- 1:00:57was going to get the Tekken done, but get the Tekken do, He
- 1:01:00kind of reminds me of that on the tape, so makes a lot of
- 1:01:04sense. So again.
- 1:01:05Four in the class so far. Real quick on knowledge.
- 1:01:08three-year starter. So basically started every year
- 1:01:12he was in the house, which is unbelievable and it's great
- 1:01:16because you think about, you know, the quarterback last last
- 1:01:19year and then the the closest possible you could get to the
- 1:01:24university and then down to a ground that has done so well for
- 1:01:29Virginia Tech all these years, down the 75 and building that
- 1:01:32pipeline back up and love to see it.
- 1:01:34All right. Just a few more things we want
- 1:01:36to hit before we close it out here tonight.
- 1:01:39BC got a coach and y'all explain to me and I know he's not the
- 1:01:44best coach. How did BC get a Bill O'Brien
- 1:01:48type coach this late in the process?
- 1:01:51Anybody, anybody got a reason behind that cause?
- 1:01:54Probably cause Alabama fans talked about him so.
- 1:01:56Bad he couldn't get no more jobs.
- 1:01:57It don't matter. They hated.
- 1:02:00Him. He.
- 1:02:01They. I don't know why I.
- 1:02:03Didn't pay attention to him enough.
- 1:02:04But they fucking hated him. They everything that went wrong,
- 1:02:08they put it on him. They did.
- 1:02:10They did. Oh, so.
- 1:02:12Maybe. You know, maybe we just took
- 1:02:14Alabama's great word for it. You know, I don't know if y'all
- 1:02:18checked out Willie on TikTok. He had some great tick tocks.
- 1:02:22He may have said O'Brien didn't need a job and nobody picked him
- 1:02:25up. He went to BC Well, he went at
- 1:02:29Ohio State. He was there.
- 1:02:30OC OK, well, I'm wrong. What you think Brian?
- 1:02:34How if if this was? Us we'd end up with.
- 1:02:38I mean, so I mean it's it's it's kind.
- 1:02:40Of been a weird trajectory for him because, I mean he.
- 1:02:43Was. You know, OC quarterback coach
- 1:02:46to Alabama, you know, worked with the Patriots last year, got
- 1:02:51picked up by Ohio State and then said, all right well, B, CS open
- 1:02:55now. So what's going over here?
- 1:02:57Let's let's kick it on over. I mean you know the Boston
- 1:03:00College and you just the Boston connection in general can't be
- 1:03:03understated. I mean, I feel like that's, you
- 1:03:05know, that that's something that it seems like an area that he,
- 1:03:09he enjoys being in. That's probably some of the
- 1:03:13allure of of grabbing a guy like him at this potential cycle.
- 1:03:17And this might be, you know, kind of the last ditch effort of
- 1:03:19him getting a head coaching job. With.
- 1:03:23The resume he has right so that he turned programs around,
- 1:03:28though. He kept Penn State above He, he,
- 1:03:30he, he. He made sure that Penn State.
- 1:03:32Didn't completely die. Yeah.
- 1:03:35So you know, they may have went. To him with that, Well, we're in
- 1:03:38a position. We need a, we need a
- 1:03:40resurrection. I don't know.
- 1:03:42You don't know what's said on these behind closed doors.
- 1:03:45Yeah, I mean, he just like Slam. Chowder he had.
- 1:03:48He had two years. Of Penn State.
- 1:03:50You know, right after everything.
- 1:03:51Happened, happened there. So and then he went to the
- 1:03:55Texans. So, I mean he did a good job of
- 1:03:57keeping Penn State. You know, they didn't fall off.
- 1:04:01They weren't what they were before, but they also weren't as
- 1:04:05bad as they probably could have or should have been in that
- 1:04:08stretch. So he's the guy that's going to
- 1:04:11kind of maximize that roster, I feel like.
- 1:04:14But I don't know if he's going to necessarily you know raise
- 1:04:18the the ceiling. They ain't.
- 1:04:20They ain't. They ain't getting back where
- 1:04:21they were 20 years. Ago no were happening again
- 1:04:25I'll. Be I think he's the guy.
- 1:04:25That can get them in probably. Year two or three can make them
- 1:04:29a consistent bowl team every year.
- 1:04:33And you know, I think he's got some work to do this offseason
- 1:04:36with with some of the guys that they lost and things like that.
- 1:04:39So I don't think year one's going to be great, but year two
- 1:04:41or three might might look, you know, at least kind of what
- 1:04:44we've expected from them when they've had some decent seasons
- 1:04:47in the last decade where they're like a, you know, 6-7, maybe 8
- 1:04:50at the best win team 100%. All right, let's close it out
- 1:04:54with this. Boys, because as of today it
- 1:04:56became official official official even though it's been
- 1:04:59kind of official official official for a long time and
- 1:05:02that is college football playoffs.
- 1:05:04Definitely set for 2024 with the 12 teams.
- 1:05:07And here's all the fun parts they because they had a changes
- 1:05:10with the PAC 12 in purgatory right now because basically
- 1:05:13dead. Well, I love.
- 1:05:15I sent it to text to. Them today.
- 1:05:17And Shelton's like, what the hell do you mean?
- 1:05:20This is wrong? And I'm like, or remember PAC
- 1:05:2212? He's like, yeah, that's right,
- 1:05:23they're in purgatory. Football's dead.
- 1:05:25Basketball and the other sports are still alive until June and
- 1:05:27then they're all going back. So but 5.
- 1:05:31Automatic. Bids.
- 1:05:32So that's basically, I mean as it looks now, the four big ones
- 1:05:37plus 1P5, excuse me, one G5 school will get it.
- 1:05:42The top four conference champions get an automatic bid
- 1:05:44down into New Year's Eve, New Year's Day.
- 1:05:47Bold, which is great. Seven at larges.
- 1:05:50Get get everything ready and write the dates down because you
- 1:05:53got to be ready December 20, December. 21st, the four.
- 1:05:57Playing games five through twelves at the five through
- 1:06:00eights home field, Which I I think that's something for years
- 1:06:04as college football fans like you want to see like some of the
- 1:06:06best teams against each other on their home field not at a
- 1:06:11neutral site. I wish it was maybe further in
- 1:06:14the playoffs like it. But bowls are still big.
- 1:06:19We. Said it before New Year's Eve
- 1:06:21New. Year's Day matters again.
- 1:06:22Y'all Fiesta Bowl. New Year's Eve night.
- 1:06:26Then the the. Peach, the Rose and the sugar.
- 1:06:29I know Tally is just when we win this conference, Tally is going
- 1:06:33to be the first person to book a hotel in Atlanta.
- 1:06:37I'm going tickets because it's it's just up the road from him.
- 1:06:41I'm being there, man. We get to a.
- 1:06:42Major bowl game. I don't know how.
- 1:06:45I don't know where. I don't know why I'm going.
- 1:06:49That's right. I'm going to put a GoFundMe up.
- 1:06:53And I'm going to get wherever we got to go.
- 1:06:55And I don't like to fly. So I might have to borrow
- 1:06:58Brian's truck and and and take out, I don't know.
- 1:07:02But I'm going, we're going to get there.
- 1:07:04We're going to get there. So there's your new.
- 1:07:06Year's Eve, New Year's Day. Then just a few weeks later, the
- 1:07:09semi finals on a Thursday and Friday night, Also in bowls this
- 1:07:12year, the Cotton and the Orange. I love that they moved over
- 1:07:16Thursday, Friday because it's going to be all lives in January
- 1:07:18on Thursday night and January on Friday night with the football
- 1:07:22world sitting there. And then finally the finals on
- 1:07:24the 20th. I'm not sure where it is this
- 1:07:26year. Don't care, you know, But it's
- 1:07:30so it's out there now. And Callie, you, you said it
- 1:07:33earlier, 12's a game changer because you can stumble.
- 1:07:39Yeah, it makes. It makes the IT makes the games
- 1:07:43a little bit more, more. Real every week.
- 1:07:47Now you know what? I'm saying like every game's
- 1:07:49important now. They always have been kind of
- 1:07:52important, but every game's important.
- 1:07:53Like you know, you may you may stumble early in the season.
- 1:08:00You may be a you know. 2 lost team that.
- 1:08:02Could still get in, you know you just got to keep playing you got
- 1:08:06to keep got to keep chopping wood so and there's an emphasis
- 1:08:11across the board so. There's two things that are
- 1:08:13being emphasized with this that haven't been emphasized with the
- 1:08:16playoff as it has been since it's been put in place.
- 1:08:20That's one thing. Winning your conference matters
- 1:08:24big, yeah. Yep, that's the big thing.
- 1:08:27I know Florida State. Probably mad as hell right now.
- 1:08:32Yep. Undefeated, undefeated winning
- 1:08:35conference. Still don't get in?
- 1:08:37Yep. And the second thing that
- 1:08:38matters is. You know, you talked about the
- 1:08:42stumbling early. You can stumble.
- 1:08:45Early and still win it. Yeah, so right you you could.
- 1:08:49Be a three. Or 4 lost team, but if you.
- 1:08:51Run that table and you get to that conference championship.
- 1:08:53You keep winning. You're in, You lose.
- 1:08:56Your You lose your out of conference games.
- 1:08:58And win the conference games. It is what it is.
- 1:09:02You get in. And this is where I think we all
- 1:09:05three disagree with. Where we hear media people talk,
- 1:09:08it's going to lessen the games. I'm like, are you kidding?
- 1:09:10There's going to be two and there's going to be 1-2 and
- 1:09:13three lost teams going into November.
- 1:09:15Just it's going to be what we just said, just win.
- 1:09:17If we just keep winning games, we're going to make it.
- 1:09:21They talk about things being lessened and.
- 1:09:23Things like that, but it's pretty much exactly what we
- 1:09:26always know. Injuries matter.
- 1:09:28So if y'all say injuries matter, it depends who gets hot and
- 1:09:32who's the healthiest team, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:09:35At the beginning of the season, this team may have been the best
- 1:09:37team, but who is healthy late in the season?
- 1:09:40Who You know who got hot at the end of the season and who, what
- 1:09:45we're going? Yeah, and the same thing that
- 1:09:47they were bitching about leaving.
- 1:09:48Florida State out are the same reasons that teams are going to
- 1:09:51have a chance in the new system, right?
- 1:09:53So exactly. You don't have to be have an
- 1:09:56unblemished record and win your conference to have a shot here
- 1:10:00You go from maybe six or seven teams feeling good about their
- 1:10:04chances heading into November to 20 teams feeling good about
- 1:10:09their chances heading into November.
- 1:10:11That's going to create a lot more buzz, a lot more eyes
- 1:10:14because you have that is spread across a larger swath of fan
- 1:10:19bases, a larger swath of markets like all of that is going to
- 1:10:23play into this. A lot of stuff.
- 1:10:26A lot of stuff goes into it like.
- 1:10:28You said when you talk about the markets, you know what I'm
- 1:10:30saying? Now you got some kids that's
- 1:10:31thinking about or maybe I don't have to go to these four schools
- 1:10:35to get say you know get to the playoffs maybe I can stay home
- 1:10:39and my team has a legit chance for me to play on the biggest
- 1:10:44stage. You know, we don't know.
- 1:10:46I I I'm excited about it though and I think it's going I think
- 1:10:50that along with nil kind of levels the playing field even
- 1:10:54though it's the wild, Wild West a little bit it is they're
- 1:10:56probably going to do some stuff to change that a little.
- 1:10:58But man I think it kind of levels the playing field a
- 1:11:00little bit. Yeah.
- 1:11:02It it, it's no longer I like what?
- 1:11:03Brian said there it's no longer six or seven schools.
- 1:11:06It's like 20. It's like 20 and it and as every
- 1:11:09year those that 15 to 20 could change because every year
- 1:11:13somebody who just gets hot at the right time has the right
- 1:11:16quarterback or has you know the right offensive line and they
- 1:11:19can just pave the way. They have a shot now and for all
- 1:11:24these years it was you got to be the blue blood.
- 1:11:26You got to be the blue blood to consistently be there and and
- 1:11:29it's no longer going to be that way.
- 1:11:31And I like what you say Tally about it's going to be easier to
- 1:11:34recruit to this because you and Kyron said it and I love to hear
- 1:11:37Kyron say it. You make that stage all eyes on
- 1:11:41you. Everybody's on you.
- 1:11:43And and to me and people say well you got to perform like you
- 1:11:46keep making it. People going to start noticing,
- 1:11:49you know what, they're here every years.
- 1:11:52What can they do? For me, all right.
