- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the men of the garrison answered
- 0:04Speaker 1: Jonathan and his armor-bearer, and said, Come up to us,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and we will show you a thing. And Jonathan said
- 0:12Speaker 1: to his armor-bearer, Come up after me, for the Lord
- 0:16Speaker 1: hath delivered them into the hand of Israel. 1 Samuel
- 0:20Speaker 1: 14.12 Dear Lord, Today I ask that you give me
- 0:26Speaker 1: the courage of Jonathan, who was able to see victory
- 0:30Speaker 1: in a seemingly impossible situation. When the odds seem stacked
- 0:34Speaker 1: against me, I choose to see myself overcoming all challenges
- 0:39Speaker 1: that are before me. Whether two or two thousand, I
- 0:44Speaker 1: will move with precision and execute my plan of attack,
- 0:48Speaker 1: knowing that your hand of favor is upon me and
- 0:52Speaker 1: all those who are fighting alongside me to claim the
- 0:55Speaker 1: territory and promises you've laid before us. the day of
- 1:01Speaker 1: vindication and validation is upon me. Thank you, God, that
- 1:07Speaker 1: through you and your power, no weapon formed against me
- 1:12Speaker 1: will prosper. When prideful people in positions of influence try
- 1:17Speaker 1: to abuse their power and try to strike down my
- 1:20Speaker 1: ideas and purpose, I declare that you will surround me
- 1:24Speaker 1: with men and women of influence who will protect my
- 1:27Speaker 1: post and as the soldiers did for Jonathan. I announce
- 1:32Speaker 1: today that I am your person. I am the one
- 1:37Speaker 1: you've chosen to step into new camps and doors of opportunities.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I am victorious. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for
- 1:51Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by
- 1:54Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Jonathan's Victory In our last story, we learned of Saul's
- 2:16Speaker 2: pride and disobedience. Although he claimed many victories, his attitude
- 2:21Speaker 2: against God was muddied by his own pride and anxiety.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Now we peer into the heart of Jonathan, Saul's son.
- 2:29Speaker 2: His bravery and resolve to do what is right is
- 2:32Speaker 2: contrasted against Saul's descending heart. Inspired by the book of
- 2:37Speaker 2: 1 Samuel.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:43Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous story, we
- 2:47Speaker 3: heard of Saul's growing pride and how it led him
- 2:50Speaker 3: to dishonor God with a thoughtless, disobedient sacrifice. When confronted
- 2:55Speaker 3: by Samuel about his disobedience, Saul chose to make excuses
- 2:59Speaker 3: and attempted to justify himself rather than repenting and seeking
- 3:03Speaker 3: God's forgiveness. This would tragically become a pattern in the
- 3:06Speaker 3: life of Saul. Today we'll see a contrast to this
- 3:10Speaker 3: prideful and insecure king in his own son, Jonathan. We'll
- 3:14Speaker 3: hear how Jonathan faces the Philistines and emerges victorious, while
- 3:18Speaker 3: Saul struggles to do things his own way, causing his
- 3:22Speaker 3: own men to suffer unnecessarily. Father and son will clash,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and loyalties will be tested. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The camp of Israel was still. Preparations for battle were
- 3:37Speaker 2: almost complete, and the men waited silently in their tents
- 3:40Speaker 2: for orders. In his tent, Saul stood in his own
- 3:44Speaker 2: self-loathing because of what Samuel had said. Would his kingdom
- 3:49Speaker 2: be taken away from him so soon? Saul thought to himself.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Meanwhile Saul's son Jonathan beckoned his armor-bearer and said,' Let
- 3:58Speaker 2: us go over the other side of the hill to
- 4:01Speaker 2: the Philistine camp. Perhaps there are weaknesses we are unaware of.'
- 4:06Speaker 2: So Jonathan and his servant crossed over the hill silently,
- 4:10Speaker 2: for Jonathan did not desire for any attention or objections.
- 4:14Speaker 2: They climbed over the rocky hill and hid under one
- 4:16Speaker 2: of the crags beside a rock. There they could see
- 4:19Speaker 2: the Philistine camp going about their business. The sun was
- 4:23Speaker 2: making its descent, and the soldiers were getting ready for
- 4:26Speaker 2: the night to fall. Jonathan peered at the Philistine garrison.
- 4:30Speaker 2: There were about twenty men standing on the outskirts of
- 4:33Speaker 2: the rest of the camp. He did not see them
- 4:35Speaker 2: as others did. While others trembled at their numbers, Jonathan
- 4:39Speaker 2: saw men too consumed with their own wickedness to fight bravely.
- 4:43Speaker 2: He knew that the Lord would go before them. Jonathan
- 4:46Speaker 2: and the armor-bearer crouched silently under the rock. Jonathan turned
- 4:51Speaker 2: to his armor-bearer. and whispered, Perhaps God will work for
- 4:54Speaker 2: us this day. If God wants victory, he shall get it.
- 4:59Speaker 2: It does not matter whether it is two men or
- 5:02Speaker 2: two thousand. His armor-bearer looked at Jonathan and nodded, I
- 5:06Speaker 2: am with you, heart and soul. The two smiled and
- 5:10Speaker 2: stood upright for the Philistines to see them. They sauntered
- 5:14Speaker 2: into camp, and the Philistine soldiers noticed them approaching. The
- 5:17Speaker 2: Philistines were not threatened in the least by Jonathan and
- 5:20Speaker 2: his servant, but Hebrews, they laughed. Come on over here, Hebrews.
- 5:25Speaker 2: We will show you around. The Philistines cackled and spat
- 5:29Speaker 2: on the floor. Jonathan and the armor-bearer walked slowly. Jonathan
- 5:34Speaker 2: could feel the favor of God in that place. To him,
- 5:37Speaker 2: it was only a matter of swinging his axe.
- 5:40Speaker 1: The Lord would do the rest.
- 5:42Speaker 2: God is before us, Jonathan said, and the two leapt
- 5:46Speaker 2: into the group of men. Jonathan swung his axe with decisiveness,
- 5:50Speaker 2: with his armor-bearer fighting beside him. The two of them
- 5:53Speaker 2: fought off the advances of twenty men. Metal clashed against metal,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and Jonathan struck down every man that ran towards them.
- 6:01Speaker 2: The two of them danced with their blades, and the
- 6:03Speaker 2: rest of the Philistines scattered in confusion. Darkness began to
- 6:07Speaker 2: settle into the sky, and all of a sudden, the
- 6:10Speaker 2: Philistines began to fight one another in confusion. They thought
- 6:14Speaker 2: they were under attack by over a hundred men, so
- 6:17Speaker 2: they stumbled into each other's swords. The watchmen of Israel
- 6:21Speaker 2: could see a restlessness in the Philistine camp below. They
- 6:24Speaker 2: brought word to Saul, and he had his men count
- 6:27Speaker 2: to see who was missing from among them. Jonathan and
- 6:31Speaker 2: his armor-bearer.
- 6:32Speaker 3: They reported.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So Saul rallied the rest of the army, and the
- 6:36Speaker 2: entirety of Israel's army stormed the Philistine camp. The battle
- 6:41Speaker 2: stretched for miles as Philistines scattered in a thousand different directions.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Confusion and hysteria overcame the Philistines, for they were caught
- 6:51Speaker 2: completely off guard. Some of the surrounding villages caught word
- 6:55Speaker 2: that the Philistines were running away, so they sent some
- 6:57Speaker 2: of their soldiers to join the Israelite army. God had
- 7:01Speaker 2: used Jonathan to scatter the Philistines, and one by one
- 7:05Speaker 2: they fell at his feet. So the Lord saved Israel
- 7:09Speaker 2: that day, and the battle passed beyond Bethlehem. There were
- 7:13Speaker 2: still a vast number of Philistines to be slain. Saul,
- 7:16Speaker 2: in a rash moment of passion, gave orders for the
- 7:19Speaker 2: men to not eat until every Philistine had been killed.
- 7:23Speaker 2: He wanted to incentivize his soldiers, but instead he left
- 7:27Speaker 2: them without fuel or energy for battle. Jonathan, however, continued
- 7:31Speaker 2: to eat. He would snack on honey to replenish his
- 7:35Speaker 2: energy and then return to the battlefield for more victory.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Eat and be filled, Jonathan said to his men. Look
- 7:42Speaker 2: at me, I have eaten and now have the strength
- 7:45Speaker 2: to continue. So Jonathan had his men eat the food
- 7:48Speaker 2: they found in the Philistine camp. Saul soon realized that
- 7:52Speaker 2: his men were growing weaker by the hour, so he
- 7:55Speaker 2: ordered for a feast to be prepared to serve the
- 7:58Speaker 2: men before sending them out again to raid the Philistine cities.
- 8:02Speaker 2: He discovered that Jonathan had been feasting on honey and
- 8:05Speaker 2: giving some to his men as well. Saul's pride sparked
- 8:08Speaker 2: rage inside of him. What have you done? Saul yelled.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Jonathan was breathing heavily from battle. He looked closely at
- 8:17Speaker 2: his father. He was growing mad. He could see it
- 8:20Speaker 2: in his eyes. Saul was becoming irresponsible, and his mind
- 8:24Speaker 2: was fogged. Jonathan did not know at this time that
- 8:27Speaker 2: God's favor had been removed from him. Jonathan stood up
- 8:31Speaker 2: straight and said, I ate honey. Jonathan stretched out his
- 8:35Speaker 2: arms and said, Here I am. If I must die,
- 8:39Speaker 2: then so be it. Saul's brow furrowed, and his mouth
- 8:44Speaker 2: tensed up with anger. he pointed to his son and said,
- 8:47Speaker 2: You shall die for it. And Saul lifted his sword
- 8:51Speaker 2: to strike down his son. In that instant, the soldiers
- 8:55Speaker 2: surrounded Jonathan and said, You shall not harm one hair
- 8:58Speaker 2: on his head, for he is the one who has
- 9:01Speaker 2: worked out this salvation for Israel. The soldiers formed a
- 9:05Speaker 2: wall between Saul and Jonathan. In that instant, Saul knew
- 9:09Speaker 2: that he was no longer king. Entitled, yes, but he
- 9:13Speaker 2: did not have the heart's.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Today's story begins on a battlefield. It's a fight with
- 9:22Speaker 3: the Philistines. But rather than being focused on the enemy
- 9:25Speaker 3: at hand, Saul is sulking, licking his wounds after Samuel's chastisement.
- 9:30Speaker 3: He's finally coming into his own as king, and now
- 9:33Speaker 3: God has told him his days as leader are numbered.
- 9:37Speaker 3: His son Jonathan, on the other hand, isn't interested in
- 9:40Speaker 3: fame or glory, but in the battle that was in
- 9:42Speaker 3: front of him. and how the Philistine army might be defeated.
- 9:47Speaker 3: He quietly sneaks away with his armor-bearer into the Philistine camp,
- 9:51Speaker 3: confident that God can give him victory if that is
- 9:53Speaker 3: his will. Listen to the words of Jonathan in 1
- 9:57Speaker 3: Samuel 14, 6. Come, let us go over to the garrison
- 10:02Speaker 3: of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will
- 10:05Speaker 3: work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from
- 10:08Speaker 3: saving by many or by a few. Jonathan realized something
- 10:12Speaker 3: that we all should remember. When something is God's will,
- 10:17Speaker 3: nothing can stop it. Centuries later, The Apostle Paul would
- 10:22Speaker 3: write in Romans chapter 8, If God is for us,
- 10:25Speaker 3: who can be against us? So Jonathan and his armor-bearer
- 10:30Speaker 3: face off against 20 Philistines and defeat them. This sends
- 10:33Speaker 3: fear throughout the Philistine camp and soldiers begin to scatter
- 10:37Speaker 3: in confusion. This clash catches the attention of the Israelites
- 10:41Speaker 3: and soon word reaches Saul that Jonathan and his armor-bearer
- 10:45Speaker 3: are missing. No doubt Saul did not want his son
- 10:49Speaker 3: Jonathan to get credit for the victory, so he marshals
- 10:51Speaker 3: his troops for battle. He even calls for the ark
- 10:55Speaker 3: to be brought, but this was no act of devotion
- 10:57Speaker 3: on Saul's part. While Saul maintained an outward appearance of
- 11:02Speaker 3: piety and righteousness, his heart was really focused on his
- 11:06Speaker 3: own glory and power. Once again, Saul acts impatiently, and
- 11:11Speaker 3: Israel goes into battle against the confused Philistines. Many of
- 11:14Speaker 3: their enemies are defeated, but not all. Still, Israel was
- 11:18Speaker 3: saved that day because of Jonathan's courage and action. And
- 11:22Speaker 3: this didn't go unnoticed by the people. Saul isn't satisfied
- 11:27Speaker 3: with the results of the battle, and he wants to
- 11:28Speaker 3: keep going until all the Philistines are defeated. So he
- 11:32Speaker 3: issues a ridiculous command that no sensible commander would dare
- 11:36Speaker 3: give to his men. He vows that no man will
- 11:39Speaker 3: eat until every Philistine is dead. As you would expect,
- 11:43Speaker 3: this foolish command weakens the men. and they are not
- 11:46Speaker 3: strong enough to face a powerful enemy. But Jonathan, wise Jonathan,
- 11:52Speaker 3: does not allow the restrictions to apply to him, and
- 11:55Speaker 3: he nourishes himself with honey. He has his men also
- 11:59Speaker 3: eat from food in the Philistine camp. So Saul finally relents.
- 12:04Speaker 3: He throws a feast for the people so they can
- 12:06Speaker 3: be strengthened for battle. By now he's all about the
- 12:09Speaker 3: grand gestures and displays of his personal power. His terrible
- 12:14Speaker 3: leadership is on full display. But when he discovers Jonathan
- 12:17Speaker 3: has Eden despite the prohibition, Saul confronts his son. Jonathan,
- 12:23Speaker 3: rather than making excuses or hiding the truth, comes clean
- 12:27Speaker 3: with no apologies. But he also submits to whatever punishment
- 12:31Speaker 3: would come his way, including death. Jonathan is a clear
- 12:35Speaker 3: contrast to his father. Jonathan is humble and committed to
- 12:39Speaker 3: the Lord, willing to own his actions. And when Saul
- 12:44Speaker 3: tries to kill his own son to show Israel that
- 12:46Speaker 3: he's the man in charge, the people stand up for
- 12:49Speaker 3: Jonathan and will not allow it. Saul, for all of
- 12:52Speaker 3: his posturing and pride, had lost the command of his people,
- 12:56Speaker 3: just as God said he would. Dear God, help us
- 13:01Speaker 3: to be a man like Jonathan, humble and always trusting
- 13:05Speaker 3: in you and willing to make decisions that honor you.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Thank you for his example in this story today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
