Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How Will You Make A Difference?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here you are listening to five
- 0:25Speaker 1: Minute Friday. Ha. I'm sitting in my hotel room in Shamani,
- 0:30Speaker 1: which is a theme for the next month. As between
- 0:35Speaker 1: running Berlin and work I am abroad for I think
- 0:40Speaker 1: I calculated something like twenty days of a total of
- 0:44Speaker 1: a forty day stretch. Now, firstly, thanks for being patient
- 0:48Speaker 1: with my voice between the cheering that I've been doing
- 0:50Speaker 1: here for athletes, and I'll explain that in a second,
- 0:54Speaker 1: as well as being just a little bit congested. I
- 0:57Speaker 1: am the first to say that it does sounded better,
- 1:00Speaker 1: So thank you. Some of you may be following along
- 1:03Speaker 1: on social but I am here in Shamani because I
- 1:06Speaker 1: came out to attend UTMB, which stands for Ultra Trail
- 1:11Speaker 1: Dumont Blanc, and essentially you can think of UTMB as
- 1:16Speaker 1: like the super Bowl, the final of a race series
- 1:20Speaker 1: that's held around the globe, and this race is like
- 1:23Speaker 1: the ultimate trail race, the pinnacle event of UTMB. People
- 1:29Speaker 1: run roughly, let's say one hundred and seventy one kilometers,
- 1:33Speaker 1: which is one hundred and six miles, and during that
- 1:36Speaker 1: period they cover ten thousand meters of elevation gain, which
- 1:41Speaker 1: that sentence just it truly blows my mind. And I
- 1:46Speaker 1: came to this last year. I was invited by Strava,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and firstly was blown away by just how beautiful this
- 1:53Speaker 1: small town is in the middle of these massive, towering mountains.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But beyond that, I was really impacted because I noticed
- 2:03Speaker 1: there weren't a lot of women. I dug into this
- 2:06Speaker 1: after that experience, and I learned that historically less than
- 2:10Speaker 1: ten percent of all UTMB participants have been women. And
- 2:16Speaker 1: of note, in addition, diversity is also a really big
- 2:19Speaker 1: issue with this particular race series, and I know that
- 2:22Speaker 1: there are some individuals that are making their voices known
- 2:26Speaker 1: on both issues. Personally, as someone who would like to
- 2:30Speaker 1: think of herself as a champion of women of fem
- 2:34Speaker 1: identifying individuals, I knew that I wanted to do something
- 2:39Speaker 1: in a way that felt natural to me, and so
- 2:43Speaker 1: I thought about how I could do that, what that
- 2:46Speaker 1: would look like, what my skill set is, and my
- 2:50Speaker 1: skill set is creating safe spaces for FEMI identifying folks. Now,
- 2:56Speaker 1: not having an individual relationship with anyone at uta Be,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I decided to go to the next best thing, which
- 3:04Speaker 1: is Hoka. Hoka happens to be the token sponsor of
- 3:08Speaker 1: this event, and so I made an entire deck pitching
- 3:14Speaker 1: this idea that I had. And it's funny because when
- 3:17Speaker 1: I made the deck, I contacted someone I knew at
- 3:19Speaker 1: HOKA and I said, I have this idea. Will you
- 3:22Speaker 1: give me a twenty minute meeting? And she said for sure.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I definitely don't think that. She thought that when we
- 3:28Speaker 1: got on the meeting, I would ask to present, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: I presented a deck that had language both from Hokah's ethos,
- 3:37Speaker 1: their mission statement and added in what my personal mission is.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And all of this seemed to have in line aspects
- 3:47Speaker 1: that made what I was pitching make a lot of sense.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Needless to say, she loved the idea, but at that moment,
- 3:54Speaker 1: originally they had some other things on deck that were
- 3:57Speaker 1: already in motion. I couldn't be mad. She said, let's
- 4:00Speaker 1: do something like this in twenty twenty four, and I
- 4:03Speaker 1: went on with my life. No is a thing I
- 4:05Speaker 1: hear a lot. So I was happy that I shot
- 4:09Speaker 1: my shot. I was happy that I went for it.
- 4:12Speaker 1: A few weeks later, I'm sitting at my computer and
- 4:15Speaker 1: an email comes in my inbox and it says, you
- 4:18Speaker 1: know what, Let's do it. I think I literally jumped
- 4:21Speaker 1: out of my chair. I was so excited. I was
- 4:25Speaker 1: so excited because it just felt so right. It felt
- 4:28Speaker 1: so right because I was going to have the opportunity
- 4:31Speaker 1: to create a workshop for women. And again I keep
- 4:37Speaker 1: using this term fem identifying, because I wanted all individuals
- 4:41Speaker 1: that identify as female to feel safe in this space,
- 4:45Speaker 1: a workshop for them to come together and feel seen
- 4:48Speaker 1: in a place that they don't feel seen. That is
- 4:51Speaker 1: exactly what we did this week, and it feels really,
- 4:55Speaker 1: really rewarding. I know that there's so much more work
- 4:58Speaker 1: to be done, and these are workshops that I've been
- 5:02Speaker 1: hosting around the country in twenty twenty four. I really
- 5:06Speaker 1: want to take this concept to the next level. But
- 5:09Speaker 1: in the meantime, I feel very validated and very excited
- 5:15Speaker 1: about the opportunity to help her. It's a huge reason
- 5:19Speaker 1: of why I have this show, and I guess I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: telling you this story right now because I want you
- 5:25Speaker 1: to take big risks. I want you to identify a
- 5:30Speaker 1: place in your community, in your environment where you can
- 5:33Speaker 1: make a difference because you have a voice. And so
- 5:38Speaker 1: I encourage you today to send the email to do
- 5:41Speaker 1: the thing, to get uncomfortable because that's when change happens,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and change it can feel really scary, but it is
- 5:51Speaker 1: so needed in so many spaces. My prompt for you
- 5:56Speaker 1: this week what are you passionate about? What do you
- 6:01Speaker 1: want to do? How can you make a difference? Again,
- 6:05Speaker 1: what are you passionate about? What can you do to
- 6:09Speaker 1: make a difference? And now a listener question.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, this is Jess from Connecticut. Thanks for troubleshooting
- 6:16Speaker 2: with me. I was having some difficulty trying to leave
- 6:18Speaker 2: you this message. I was curious about if you've had
- 6:21Speaker 2: any recommendations for different accessories or products to use. I
- 6:27Speaker 2: am trying to get ahead of some potential planner fasciitis
- 6:32Speaker 2: working with physical therapists, and I have a running coach.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But I'm training for the New York City Marathon and
- 6:37Speaker 2: it's a dream race. So I want to do everything
- 6:40Speaker 2: I can to toe the line nice and healthy. So
- 6:42Speaker 2: any tips and recommendations that you may have from all
- 6:45Speaker 2: of your experiences would be greatly appreciated. And thanks so
- 6:48Speaker 2: much in advance for your help and time.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Okay, so notably, there are I would say three products
- 6:55Speaker 1: that have made a difference for me in my planter fasciitis.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I'm going to to all three of these in the
- 7:02Speaker 1: show notes, but know that everyone is different, and I
- 7:05Speaker 1: would definitely recommend if you are dealing with the same
- 7:07Speaker 1: condition that I've been dealing with, that you make an
- 7:12Speaker 1: effort to see an expert, so a physical therapist, a physician,
- 7:16Speaker 1: get one on one help with your situation. The first
- 7:20Speaker 1: thing a tigertail. It's a small roller that you can
- 7:25Speaker 1: use all over your body for soft tissue work, but
- 7:27Speaker 1: it's also great for rolling out my foot before and
- 7:30Speaker 1: after efforts, and it's small to travel with, so I
- 7:34Speaker 1: would recommend that. The next thing I would recommend is
- 7:37Speaker 1: a frozen foot massage roller. So again, a lot of
- 7:41Speaker 1: massage tools here. I am obsessed. I have one from
- 7:44Speaker 1: I believe you pronounce it Guy m Gaiam. You can
- 7:49Speaker 1: buy it on Amazon again in the show notes, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: I keep this in my freezer and I look forward
- 7:55Speaker 1: to using it in the morning at night when I'm
- 7:58Speaker 1: sitting watching TV. Is excellent. And the last thing that's
- 8:03Speaker 1: in my rotation are in souls. Now you can get
- 8:06Speaker 1: custom orthotics, they can be very expensive, so instead I
- 8:10Speaker 1: went to Amazon and bought a pair that my PT
- 8:12Speaker 1: recommended and they have made a world of difference in
- 8:16Speaker 1: my sneakers, so orthotics and two different tools to roll
- 8:20Speaker 1: out my feet. I know a lot of people use
- 8:23Speaker 1: socks and whatnot to sleep in overnight. I am the
- 8:26Speaker 1: kind of person that cannot bear socks in bed, so
- 8:29Speaker 1: they're not for me, but all the power to you.
- 8:33Speaker 1: That is it for this week. Avoir from shaw Minie
- 8:36Speaker 1: You Know the Deal at Hurdle Podcast at Emily a Body,
- 8:39Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
